ogs and their owners are invited for a day of doggy delights and fun dog classes at the annual Chiswick House Gardens Dog Show. Now in its seventh year, the show has retained its popularity with locals and celebrity dogwalkers. This year’s event promises to be one of the largest free open dog days in London. Headline sponsor for the third year running is Chiswick estate agency, Edward d’Arc. Further regular supporters Southfields Grooming and CJ Hall veterinary surgeons, both of Acton Lane, Chiswick, have also pledged their ongoing support by sponsoring the day’s programme, and the show rings. Dogs can be entered into any of the 14 various classes such as Best Young Handler, Best Trick and the popular Fancy Dress Competition. Dog loving celebrities and local vets will be on hand to judge the classes. Last year a record number of dogs were entered and the winners wore their rosettes very proudly! Entry to dog classes is £2 each and owners can pre-register using the registration link on the website. It’s not a problem if you don’t fancy taking part in the classes - there will be plenty of other things to do. Owners can stock up on wonderful doggy gifts from regular visitors Funky Mutts or even indulge their pooch in a quick manicure from the

Southfields team. Capable Canines training school will be running agility and heelwork to music demonstrations and this year, owners will be able to let their dogs take part in the Have-a-Go-Agility feature. The Dogs Trust parade is also always popular, with residents from their west London Harefield centre putting their best paws forward. The Dog Show, which is organised by CHOW Chiswick House Organised Walkers - in association with Chiswick House Friends, is held on the cricket pitch within Chiswick House Gardens (entrance via Staveley Road.) Anyone interested in helping with the show as a volunteer can contact them wia the website. Last year over 1500 visitors attended the event. With a licensed bar, barbecue and vegetarian offerings available throughout the day, teas and coffees and ice creams, as well as a dog crèche and face painters, everyone should find something to keep them entertained. All surplus funds from the dog show are used to support dog-related projects carried out by Chiswick House and Gardens Trust within the Gardens. Recently, this involved the replacement of dog-waste bins and installation of free waste bag dispensers. General enquiries: 07586 6318326, Follow the Dog Show on Twitter @ Chiswickdogshow or on Facebook.

ORGANIC SEPTEMBER The annual celebration of all things organic

Milk

W

hy organic? Organic farming is planet friendly. You can be safe in the knowledge that hydrogenated fats and controversial additives like aspartame, tartrazine and MSG are banned under organic standards. Over 320 additives, including artificial preservatives, colourings and flavourings, are used in nonorganic processed foods to prevent spoilage, or enhance a food’s texture, colour or flavour. Only 38 are allowed under Soil Association organic standards, generally these permitted additives are derived from natural sources such as citric acid from lemons. Organic food must be certified by law so you can be assured the product and ingredients come from trusted sources. The standards for organic food are laid down by European law, so a licence is required to grow, process and market organic products, plus all organic farms and food companies are inspected at least once a year. Here are some foods that could really make a difference. 26 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

There are huge differences between glasses of organic and conventionally-produced milk. Researchers found that organic milk contained more beneficial nutrients when compared with conventional milk. The Soil Association told us that it’s the cows’ natural diet that enhances the quality of the milk, while non-organically farmed dairy cows rely on proteins and grains for their food. It is also found that organic milk contained 68% higher levels of omega-3 acids, and if mother and baby consumed organic dairy products, the infants were 36% less likely to suffer from eczema. Fruit

According to The Soil Association the average non-organic apple is sprayed up to 16 times with up to 30 different pesticides. Other fruits include strawberries, pears and grapes. The Food Standards Agency insist our food is safe, stating: ‘not all foods contain pesticide residues, and where they do occur they are typically at very low levels.’ We spend an estimated £20m each year mopping up pollution caused by the 4.5 billion litres of pesticides and chemical fertilisers sprayed on crops annually. Organic farming bans the use of these artificial chemicals. Prawns

While wild fish can’t be classed as organic because

we don’t know what they’re eating, farmed fish and shellfish can. And if you switch to one type of organic seafood, make it prawns. Writers including Alex Renton (Daily Mail) have visited prawn farms in Vietnam and reported back on the extent of chemicals used. Prawns are packed in at 20 per square metre and doused regularly with antibiotics, growth hormones and drugs controlling everything from colour to shell thickness. He saw the chemical methyl hydroxybenzoate being used - a chemical that has been linked to cancer. Organic prawn farms ban the use of drugs and artificial chemicals. Farmers feed prawns an organic diet, avoiding the use of antibiotics and pesticides. They are also stocked in low densities with other species to help support

the farm’s ecosystem. Meat

We’ve all heard stories of growth hormones being used in the meat industry. Using antibiotics as a growth enhancer was banned in the EU in 2006. However, conventionally-reared animals are given antibiotics to prevent disease . The World Organisation said: ‘there is growing concern that antibiotic residues in meat and dairy products could result in antibiotic resistance in bacteria prevalent in humans, reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics used to treat human disease.’ In organic farming, animals have access to fresh air, space to wander, and live longer lives, with antibiotics used only when absolutely necessary. Buying organic products helps to support the climatefriendly farming that is going to be so important as we face up to the environmental challenges of the 21st century.

he World’s End area on the Kings Road in Chelsea has for decades been a famous hub for fashionistas, creatives, hippies, aristocrats, trend-setters, bohos and rock stars alike. Its namesake – the iconic World’s End Distillery – has now launched with an exciting new concept for this complex and unique historical building. Located on the first floor ‘The Summerhouse’ offers guests a taste of summer throughout every season. After the huge popularity of the pop-up Summerhouse in Maida Vale in 2010, the King’s Road version is open all year with a nautical theme, serving delicious seafood in a space reminiscent of a Hampton’s beach house. The décor is light and breezy, the perfect interpretation of a British summer. With light wood tones, pale blue walls, yellow sunflowers and objects you would associate with the seaside. Peer through the porthole to see waves splashing outside, spot the retro rowing boat in the corner, or step out on to the decked roof terrace for a predinner drink to catch the sun setting on a balmy evening. Talented Head Chef Wyatt Shevloff has created a sumptuous seafood menu including seaside staples such as: potted Morecambe Bay shrimps, New England seafood chowder and Tuna tartare. Mains are simple but delicious with fish and chips, native lobster with chips and garlic butter or roast cod with grilled white asparagus and pepper relish. Round off the perfect summertime meal with decadent desserts such as, bakewell tart with almond ice cream, Eton mess with strawberries or elderflower and raspberry jelly. The Summerhouse also offers a refreshing drinks menu with summer-style cocktails and an international wine selection with a particular emphasis on rosé, white and sparkling wines. Independent schools are in the unique position to provide a truly bespoke education for your child. Does he or she show an interest in YOUR child? • Pastoral care: Do the arrangements for looking after your child’s health and welfare satisfy you? • Discipline: Is discipline stricter or more relaxed than you would expect? • Curriculum: Is it broad and balanced? Will your child have an adequate range of options? • Extra activities: Does the school offer an extra-curricular activities programme that will stimulate your child’s interest?

• Exam results: Although academic success is important, don’t be tempted to go just for schools high in the “league tables”. Education isn’t a one-size-fits-all affair and thankfully independent schools come in all shapes and sizes. The independent sector gives parents the opportunity to choose a school that is right for their child. Whether it is the breadth and flexibility of the curriculum that appeals or perhaps the extra curricular activities, you can be assured that your child will receive a well rounded education helping them to achieve their full potential.

ine Arts College is a small, friendly, independent college with an excellent performance record, situated in a delightful part of Belsize Park. It was founded in 1978 as a specialist college for the study of Arts and Humanities. The widest choice is now offered in these disciplines at A Level and GCSE. They also run a one – year Fine Art Diploma in Art and Design. The light and airy college buildings, which were originally a Victorian dairy, have specialist studios for art, music and drama, as well as a series of lecture and tutorial rooms. The Art Department offers painting,

Fine arts college experience in both the academic and professional world, yet young and enthusiastic enough to appreciate the needs of the students. Many tutors are examiners, moderators or advisors for public examinations. Each student has a personal tutor who is responsible for his/her academic and personal welfare. The personal tutor is the link between student, tutors and parents. Subject tutors write internal fortnightly reports, which are given to the personal tutor to discuss with the tutee at weekly timetabled meetings. These weekly sessions are also used for study skills and academic and pastoral matters. Full reports are sent at the

In addition there are music technology, film and media studies studios nearby. Each of the tutorial rooms has its own extensive library; for example the History of Art Department has a library of over 10,000 slides and 3,000 books. The college consistently achieves excellent results, with students gaining high examination passes, University and Art School acceptance and success in professional careers. Supervised study periods are arranged throughout the week, which all GCSE students attend, as well as many Sixth Form students. As a tutor is always available for assistance, it is an extremely effective way of keeping both homework and coursework up to date. At interview,

prospective students are shown the College Code of Behaviour which sets out our procedures regarding discipline. The student must accept these conditions when taking up a place at Fine Arts College. The most important college rule is that a student should behave courteously and treat others (tutors and fellow students alike) in the manner which he/she would like to be treated. Fine Arts College encourage a close working relationship with students and parents, and hold Open Days and Parents’ Evenings each term. They also have social evenings where students’ artistic and academic work can be seen. Music, drama and film students regularly put on productions to which parents and friends are invited. In 2004, Fine Arts College won the Good Schools Guide awards for the best Independent School for Girls of Art, Design and Photography. e d u c at i o n Twenty years ago boys out-performed girls in virtually every area of measurable education success: now the boot is on the other foot. If, over the last 20 years, girls’ performance had fallen as dramatically as boys’ performance has fallen, there would probably have been a national outcry and questions in the House. However obviously the old system failed girls, educationalists have only recently begun to consider that the much-needed reforms that enhanced girls’ performance may have actually damaged boys’ performance: we threw the baby out with the bath water. British education has fallen prey to the lazy assumption that discipline, high expectations and an emphasis on maintaining standards were the prerogative of the political right and boiled down to nothing more than the “3 R’s and the sort of “flog ‘em” mentality we associate with David Copperfield. Paradoxically, restrictive educational practices of today have the best possible liberal pedigree. Almost all roughand-tumble play is frowned upon lest it overflow into bullying. Risk-taking, (which even without the macho overtones of ‘turning boys into men’ is something that boys need to develop) is rendered virtually impossible by a quagmire of legislation and a culture of blame and litigiousness. Boys need positive, strong male role models but in the current climate it is virtually impossible to develop an ethics of strong masculinity that is not ridiculed as some ersatz ‘He-Man’ cartoon: the very idea of masculine strength has become insidiously associated with an insensitive, emotionallyretarded and arrogant chauvinism as if the whole gender were in danger of mistaking Schwarzenegger’s ‘Terminator’ for something other than entertainment. The productive interrogation of traditional gender roles that the UK went through from the 60’s to the 90’s has left boys largely without male heroes they can respect (outside of professional soccer) and yet on 24/7 news channels a catalogue of horrors (supposedly stemming primarily from an untrammelled masculinity) will confront them in the detailed reportage of crimes against children, women and the weak undertaken by men. So there is a malaise and there is also a vacuum and in those conditions, any fly-by-night fad can influence young men. The terrible riots and looting that shook the UK this year were the final proof that educational failure in a moral vacuum is a lethal combination. The results are felt daily at street level in the brave new world of ‘hoodies’, street 12 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

In where the only competition ‘is against any given classroom, put girls in groups, yourself ’, or where ‘there is no right give them a task and they will get on with answer’. If a teacher asks a boy, “how it. Give a group of boys the same task and do you feel about this poem?” The boy they will discharge it honourably for the dies inside. Precisely because boys have 45 seconds that it takes for the teacher to extremely strong emotions, they are pass out of earshot, after which they will do incredibly reluctant to verbalise them as they please. If the rules of this game are and engender the inevitable subsequent changed and prestige accrues to the team teasing from their mates. Ask the same that gives the best answer, then the boys will boy “how do you react to this poem?” and be transformed because they want to win. In he is safe and reassured because within a world where the educational fashion for masculine culture it is perfectly legitimate 20 years has been that “there isn’t just one to react to something. Boys follow lists right answer”, this sort of activity is about as of written instructions poorly but map and organise things well: they are the fashionable as waxing your moustache. IKEA DIY species on the planet. Twenty There is an increasing body of research years ago an A level question rewarded that shows that the significant neuro- knowledge and planning in the dominant cognitive gender differences can only essay and problem-solving forms. Today be addressed successfully by creating guided bullet points and problems that learning situations that respond to the are “accessible” remove the elements of needs of the different genders and have challenge, stimulus, and organisation so different dynamics. Amongst these are the vital for boys to succeed: it is no surprise following: boys are visually focused and they have done badly.

The last time I taught in a co-educational maintained school, there were fourteen students in my A level English class: all of them were girls. In all-boys’ environments, boys can freely participate in the creative arts without fear of undermining their masculinity. They can they experience positive discipline, clear rules and an environment that helps them develop their sense of self and their sense of fairness as part of a code of honour they value. Their teachers are valued by boys far more as a role model than as pure vehicles for the transmission of academic knowledge and in that relationship coaching is crucial. Sport itself is a major form of emotional education in which boys learn to manage strong motions and stresses in physical situations. Everyone leads in some areas and follows in others. It is only if we can free our minds from the sloppy thinking that single-sex schools are inevitably conveyor belts for extremely conservative gender roles and replace that concern for social engineering with a concern for educational achievement and creating new and richer gender models that boys’ achievement will flourish again. It’s nearly 40 years since the women’s movement took off in the UK and more than a decade since Blur sang about “girls who are boys who like boys to be girls”. We need to stop worrying so much about labelling: of course, some boys will be “girllike” and vice-versa. Of course! So what? Education is not merely a matter of social stereotyping; it is a matter of cognitive organisation and different forms of mental and emotional processing. If the old system virtually ignored the needs of girls in these areas, then the more recent diktats of the currently fashionable political commissars largely ignore the needs of boys. The problem is that faddery itself is the new despotism that brooks no disagreement: the mysteries of education have eluded philosophers for thousands of years and are unlikely to be solved by any current ministerial Quango but woe betide the teacher who hesitates to be a dedicated follower of fashion and implement the latest aperçu from the Ministry as if it came from Jove himself. Tragically, if you want educational practices that will help your son learn to think and feel all of which he is capable, then the only place you can find it is in the energy of the independent boys’ schools that combine suitable traditional values with innovative educational practices and positive gender role modelling, but still allow “boys to be boys”.

More than once I’ve heard parents say these words when considering the next school for their son or daughter, expecting me to agree. Having worked in London since the beginning of the 1980s, I am convinced that many of the capital’s schools offer outstanding educational opportunities – not least, because of their location. It is certainly a parental fallacy to believe that a rural boarding school will offer no potential for teenage misbehaviour or will somehow prevent a child “growing up too fast”. Museums, theatres, concert halls, art galleries, exhibitions, royal parks, historic monuments: every possible lesson enhancement is a few of tube stops away for teachers and pupils in London schools. More importantly, education begins before the teacher walks into the classroom. The unique social, cultural and religious diversity which this city embraces, enables many London school children to gain extraordinary educational benefits by understanding at first hand the lives of their peers. Scare stories hit the press. The reality in the best London schools is a thoroughly positive experience, which fosters tolerance and complex understanding in the adults of the future. However, the expectations placed on the parents of London teenagers are greater than ever before. A strong link is essential between you as a parent and the school you choose for your son or daughter, especially beyond the age of eleven. Try to find a school that as far as possible matches the values that you have established at home. Avoid choosing a school with a strong uniform policy if receiving reminders about ties or skirt length will become irritating! However, do bear in mind, as a former Head Master of Eton once said, “No school is perfect!”

Educating Teenagers in London He/she’ll be better off in a school out of London... words Vivienne Durham Vivienne Durham is Headmistress of Francis Holland School, a leading day school for girls in central London

from their senior pastoral teachers. Parenting teenagers can demand negotiation skills that would not be out of place at a UN global summit. Whilst teenagers may often not understand, like or agree with parental opinions, they need to learn to respect the right of adults to hold contrasting views. Predictably, the most successful pupils usually prioritise school work and school extra-curricular activities during the week. Communication is key when allowing teenagers to have greater freedom in their social life. Parents have to be able to trust that their teenager Parents can feel cut adrift from their is where he/she says she/he will be teenager’s school life once the security - and expect that negotiated homeof meeting other mothers and fathers London parents are often worried about times will be met. Teenagers should at the “school gate” diminishes. More be encouraged to plan their time at how often their teenagers should be than ever during the teenage years, it is allowed out socially during the week in weekends so that family commitments essential to know the parents of your and homework are accommodated, as term time. There are no hard and fast son or daughter’s best friends. Events well as time for socialising with friends. rules, but always trust your parental organised by Parents’ Associations instincts. “No” should still be a seminal often create valuable and enjoyable Self discipline usually increases word in the parental repertoire. It is opportunities to meet parents in your with age, for most teenagers. Good daughter’s year group and compare notes. always useful to compare notes with organisation comes naturally to many the parents of your son or daughter’s young teenage girls – but not to all. friends – or even seek advice directly Above all, as a parent, you need to feel that an email or phone call will be welcomed by the school if you have concerns about any aspect of your son or daughter’s well-being at school. Many schools will host regular events exclusively for parents on issues such as “ keeping your daughter safe online “; preventing alcohol and substance abuse and socialising guidelines. Schools which are members of GSA (the Girls’ Schools Association) are experts in the education of girls. Parents of teenage girls will find free advice on a huge range of common concerns from professional experts on GSA’s excellent website: www. mydaughter.com.

By sixteen or seventeen, some teenage girls can summon up impressive time-management skills and need no exhortations to meet school assignment deadlines. Parents can promote this level of motivation by establishing a clear routine for homework, well before their daughter enters her teenage years. The well known mantra, “homework time before screen time” (ie before Facebook, ipods, mobile phone, television) has much to recommend it, although homework will often require the use of a computer or iPad. Teenagers want guidelines and boundaries – if only to test them. From Polonius to The Earl of Chesterfield, literature abounds with examples of parents seeking to advise their children. All too often, pearls of wisdom fall on deaf ears: “advice is seldom welcome; and those who want it the most always want it the least” (The Earl of Chesterfield in a letter to his son 29 Jan 1748.). Example often succeeds better than precept; teenage girls and boys need role models in their real lives, beyond the online celebrity culture. Teachers can play a crucial role in shaping the values and behaviour of teenagers. Even in the 21st century, an inspirational teacher will influence young lives far beyond the classroom. Many schools have a buddy system or some formalised befriending scheme to ensure that younger teenagers are “mentored” by senior students. In boarding schools, the House system also provides invaluable opportunities for younger pupils to learn from the example of older students in their House. Above all, if teenagers are to be fully prepared for adult life, they occasionally need to get things wrong, to have set-backs, or even to fail outright. The perfectionist teenager, who has known nothing but literal or metaphorical gold stars during his/her school career, is poorly equipped for “the slings and arrows” of adult life. Teenagers need to acquire the resilience to cope with disappointment or heart-break, with parents and teachers on hand, willing to listen and support. Guiding a teenager into becoming a happy and well balanced adult, who has found his or her place in the world, can sometimes seem an Olympic feat. Most parents and teachers would agree that no gold medal could reflect the achievement. SEPTEMBER2011

e d u c at i o n Very few people in the UK seem to, but the question I want to ask is why don’t we, when the rest of Europe actively celebrates it? Is it just a touch of xenophobia, or is there a little seed of fear deep within our subconscious associated with our 11 year old self sitting in the back of French class wondering what on earth future perfect and past participles are, let alone what we are going to say if the teacher asks us a question. Thankfully, many primary schools in England are now introducing basic French to our children from the age of 7. This is considerably earlier than when we were at school, but is it early enough? In Norway, Malta and Luxembourg children start learning a second language from the first year of primary school, and in parts of Belgium and Spain they start at the age of three. In the Netherlands there are even government funded bilingual primary schools teaching simultaneously in Dutch and English.

DID YOU KNOW THAT 26TH SEPTEMBER THIS YEAR IS EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES? in everyday situations are substantially higher. Even if your second language vocabulary is limited to a few words and your accent is noticeably English, “it is your enthusiasm that counts” say experts like Carey Myles. Learning a language together is a fantastic opportunity for both parent & child, and is a great bonding experience as a child will imitate not just the words that they hear but also the attitude of the adult.

friendly Dragon Diglot. The flash cards also follow the dual language principle of subliminal absorption by showing both languages together on one side of the card and have the unique advantage of having a plain side with just a photograph of the object on the other. Consequently parents can use the cards across a broad spectrum of ages, and even for just learning English. The cards are based around the theme of ‘Going Shopping’ with each of the 50 jumbo cards showing a clear photograph of an item likely to be found by a small child in a supermarket. The range is completed by a story book about a little boy Matthew and the Wellington Boots, for 3-5 year olds, which has beautiful illustrations and simple French and English text laid side by side.

Diglot Books, for younger children, is to get them a Foreign Language Teddy Bear. There doesn’t need to be anything special about the teddy, although a culturally relevant one is a nice extra dimension. The key is that the child believes that the Teddy can only speak the other language. Provided the adult introduces the teddy bear in this context and involves it in all the language activities and games that they play together, then the child will eventually start talking to their teddy in that language, believing that the Teddy cannot understand English. There are some great tips on their website (www.diglotbooks.com) for games and activities that you can play with your child in a second language including simple every day ones like I-spy and Simon Says, and all of Diglot Book’s products have free audio available online allowing parents to build up their confidence in speaking and listening before interacting with their child.

Whether girls join the Habs family at 4+, 5+ or 7+, there is always a warm welcome for them; older girls help the staff to create a caring ethos. There is a buzz about the place and it is our intention to enable each girl to find something in which she can be successful. All girls are encouraged to aim high and relish the challenges of a very broad curriculum. Energetic teaching staff and outstanding facilities make learning exciting and fun. Rainbow, our reception class, provides the youngest members of the Habs family with opportunities to explore the world of learning and to express themselves in words, imaginative play, music, dance, roleplay, art and design technology. Girls who join the school at 5+ enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum from the start, including twice-

weekly Japanese lessons. We work hard at promoting girls’ self esteem and like each girl to find something in which she can enjoy success and take pride. We aim for our girls to be enthusiastic and confident but not cocky. Girls are encouraged to understand their responsibility to others in our community and in the wider world.

offers a first class education that is about so much more than examination results – we are educating girls and preparing young women for lives as creative, independent thinkers who display commitment to and concern for the welfare of others. Our rich and diverse provision promotes these values. What an irony it is that in so many schools the extracurricular is seen as marginal, whereas, in fact, it is the creative, social, challenging and exciting activities fostered by a broad educational experience that mould well-balanced individuals, confident to take their place in a world changing with unprecedented speed.

best in a nurturing atmosphere and are supported by dedicated staff who encourage the girls to believe in themselves. RMS leavers go on to succeed highly both at university and in the world of work because they complement their excellent results with outstanding inter-personal skills. Girls who take advantage of our flexible boarding provision are particularly well prepared for life as independent adults. Boarding at RMS was rated as outstanding by OFSTED in an inspection last term.

THE PLAY’S THE THING AT THE HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S SCHOOLS

The Haberdashers' Aske's Schools (Elstree), placed 'side by side for excellence', enjoy the best of all worlds in school education. On adjoining sites in 100 plus acres of grounds, they are two, single-sex, independent day schools whose pupils benefit greatly from a vast range of social and educational opportunities. The academic reputation of the two schools is well known: they are firmly established in the ‘premier league’ of annually published league tables, a remarkable achievement in itself. The vast majority of Haberdashers’ students go to their first choice university, exceptionally high numbers to Oxford and Cambridge, and some achieve national academic distinction during their time at school.

Advertorial feature The Habs style is to love learning and to enjoy the academic opportunities alongside a huge wealth of extra-curricular activity. In both schools the range of the non-academic curriculum is enormous and the level of participation by pupils very high. Sport, music, theatre, art, service in the community, partnerships with local state schools, debating, public speaking, society meetings, fund-raising initiatives, outward bound and adventurous training activities and every type of leadership and resourcefulness opportunities are all regular features of the termly routine. Drama is an important part of both schools’ academic and extra-curricular programmes. With a strong emphasis on personal creativity and devised work, it offers students an opportunity to build something together as a team. It also allows students to express and develop themselves emotionally in a subject where there are few ‘right ‘ answers. The subject is taught to ALevel, focuses on all aspects of practical theatre from direction to design, improvisation to dance, sound and lighting to make-up and costume. Both schools have a long tradition of excellence in Drama and school plays have always been a muchanticipated fixture in the school calendar. The Senior, Middle and Junior plays each year provide opportunities for students to mix. This year saw sell-out productions of Oh What a Lovely War, A Midsummer’s Night Dream and Coram Boy. The Girls’ School Summer Term ends with a Drama Festival with every form devising a ten-minute play, and Sixth Formers run drama clubs for younger students throughout the year. The Boys’ School recently appointed a Director-in-Residence and launched their first-ever House drama competition. Both drama departments regularly take students to productions in the West End, South Bank and the London Fringe. Students have access to state of the art drama studios, equipped with the very latest video facilities and computer operated sound and lighting equipment. The Bourne Hall is one of only five school stages in the UK to be equipped with a fully operational fly tower, allowing for spectacular effects and scene changes. The school’s theatre technician oversees set construction and prop making and there are comprehensive wardrobe and prop stores on site available for use by students. Setting the Standard

Greycoat G reycoat has long been recognised as one of the leading providers of excellent childcare staff for families in London, across the UK and internationally. Greycoat has now incorporated ‘Education’ into their new childcare branding. For some time now, the Education side of the business has involved successfully recruiting Pastoral Care staff for private Independent Schools and Greycoat is now pleased to announce the launch of a specialist Tutor service. Greycoat Childcare and Education can help ensure your child reaches their full potential by finding you the ideal Private Tutor for the needs of your family. Their dedicated Tutor desk is ready to help with all your enquiries. All academic subjects are catered 62 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

for, at all levels and exams up to GCSE, A-Level and university entry. Greycoat’s Private Tutors can also assist with applications for schools and further and higher education. We caught up with Carol Flynn, Greycoat Childcare and Education’s specialist Tutor Consultant, for a quick Q & A session. Carol, what makes a good Tutor? A good Tutor will have experience working in a school covering the National Curriculum and the various Key Stages and some Tutor experience in Private Households. He/She will be organised, patient and flexible and will have the ability to motivate students to learn and achieve their full academic potential. The Tutor must be adaptable and should the lesson

plan need to be adjusted in any given session then he/she must have to skills to do so. The Tutors communications skills must be exemplary, as they must discuss and explain everything in detail to both the student and the parents. The ideal Tutor will provide not only a verbal, but also a written report at the end of each session or on a monthly basis. Do Tutors have to be qualified teachers? Ideally yes - either Primary, Secondary or ESL Teachers as they will have a more comprehensive understanding of the academic structure required for lessons. We know that all jobs are different, but what would a client typically want from a Tutor or what is the most common request you hear from your clients? The majority of our requests are for tuition for students preparing for Common Entrance Exams – 8+ and 11+, as well as requirements for

English Tutors, Maths Tutors for all age groups, specialist Language Tutors or Business English Tutors. However, we do envisage receiving more requests throughout the academic year for clients seeking Tutors for assistance with preparation for GCSE and A Level exams. Currently we have many Music Tutors, Language Tutors, English Tutors and Primary School teachers available to work with children and adults. When are these Tutors available? These candidates are available up to 5 afternoons per week, usually for 1 – 3 hour sessions. Is there an average salary for an after-school Tutor? Does it depend on levels of experience or the subject taught? The salary does depend on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. As a general guide, the range is from £30 - £45 per hour. If you need help recruiting a Private Tutor, or have any questions regarding this new service, contact Greycoat who will be pleased to help with all your queries. ollowing the success of last year’s launch event, the ultimate fashion, beauty and shopping extravaganza, Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model Live, will make its anticipated return this October. Based on the hugely successful reality TV show hosted by Elle Macpherson, Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model Live will bring the top model world to life. Fans of the TV series will get the chance to join the show’s infamous judges, Charley Speed, Grace Woodward and Julien Macdonald, for the ultimate three day live event, that will once again feature stunning catwalk shows, live music, fashion, styling, shopping, beauty, pampering, exciting entertainment and a range of interactive features all under one roof. Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model Live will also be the first time that the final 13 contestants from this year’s series will appear together again after the winner has been announced later this year, giving members of the public an exclusive peek at the girls in action, as they take part in their first ever professional catwalk live at the event. This year’s Main Catwalk Show will feature the latest trends and this season’s hot looks, live entertainment and jaw-dropping performances from the world of music, fashion and dance within a 2000 seat auditorium. Last year, pop sensation Jessie J performed in every Catwalk Show across the 3 day event, billed as Britain’s ‘next big thing,’ one year on she has become a national superstar! This year’s Open Catwalk will be hosted by last year’s favourite runner up Charlotte Holmes who will present a buzzing entertainment programme of fashion and beauty demos, amongst live DJ sets and Open Catwalk sessions, where the public have the chance to strut their stuff like a top model on stage, whatever their size and shape. BINTM Live, the event of high hopes and high heels, will also offer visitors free model training sessions from a top modelling agency, to prepare them for their turn on the Open Catwalk. Talent scouts and big brands will be on the lookout for new faces for their upcoming fashion and beauty campaigns in a series of casting opportunities; last year dozens of girls’ lives were changed when they were spotted and signed at BINTM Live. In fact, a number of ‘spotted’ visitors from last year’s event will be starring in the forthcoming Sky Living TV series, starting on 4th July. There will also be a wide range of interactive features for visitors to enjoy; the Paparazzi Zone with Company Magazine lets visitors get in front of the lens and see themselves as a Company cover girl, the Style Icon Workshops in association with Handbag.com, are a hotspot for top tips from fashion industry insiders, and the Powder Room is the place to be pampered with free facials, manicures and more. With live entertainment, top hair and beauty tips, inspiring on-trend catwalk collections and even the chance to get spotted as the next big thing, Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model Live is a full on fashion experience that makes the ultimate girl’s day out. Can teeth whitening damage teeth? No. Teeth whitening is a safe and effective technique that is scientifically proven. The treatment involves the use of custom fitting whitening trays and a very small amount of whitening gel (carbamide peroxide). You need to apply the gel to teeth for 1-2 hours a day for 2-3 weeks. The whitening occurs via an oxygenation process within the structure of teeth. Problems can occur if you have ill fitting trays or if you use certain ‘over the counter’ whitening products. here is an increasing trend for both men and women to seen non-surgical, non-invasive methods for achieving a younger look. There are various options available that fall into this category, including wrinkle relaxing injections such as Botox®, dermal fillers and skin peels, to name just a few. Erika Moore recently visited Sister Kay Greveson at her clinic in Hampstead after becoming increasingly frustrated by her lines and wrinkles. Here she outlines her experience. I work in a job that involves dealing with clients on a daily basis, so my appearance is important. I was increasingly aware of the lines on my forehead and between my eyes. I always felt as though I looked angry, and older than I was, even though I am only in my early 30’s. I approached Sister Kay Greveson her clinic within Aquarius Spa, Hampstead, about two months ago as I had been recommended to her by a friend. I was initially nervous as I have never had any sort of treatment like that before. I was worried about having the injections and what I would look like afterwards but Kay put my mind at ease immediately. We had a detailed chat about what results I wanted from the treatment; she took a medical history and some photographs. Kay explained that Botox® is a safe, naturally occurring protein that works by blocking nerve

She gave me the option of using a ‘numbing’ local anaesthetic cream, which I took. Despite being nervous, I did not find the procedure bad at all. Kay talked me through each step and made sure I was comfortable throughout. She was very gentle and I hardly felt the injections; it certainly wasn’t as bad as I had

imagined. She explained that it would take between 2 and 14 days for the full results to be visible and advised me to come back after this time so she could check on the result and have a ‘dose adjustment’ of treatment if required. It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! In the end I did not need more treatment as I was more than pleased with the results. I have a natural look and still have facial expression but no lines!! Botox® is not permanent, lasting only three to four months, after which, the lines that were there prior to treatment slowly return. I will definitely have it again when the time comes as it has made me feel so much more confident with my appearance. I feel that I look more relaxed and don’t have an ‘angry’ look from frowning all of the time.

f, like us, you appreciate quality and service, but not at the expense of the environment; you want somewhere that offers you the very best in technical and creative expertise, a luxuriously relaxing experience, and the levels of customer service you’ve come to expect then take a look at Gary Ingham Hairdressing. Firmly established in the hearts and minds of the discerning clientele of NW3 as the salon of choice for stylish professionals, trendy celebs, and elegant locals, Gary Ingham Hairdressing very rarely advertise, and find that personal recommendations and great reviews are more than enough to keep them

busy. Rather more than busy, in fact: if you want to bag yourself an appointment with the salon’s eponymous Director, then you’d better be prepared to wait a while! Moving with the times, you can now book your appointment with Gary or any of his team, through their very easy to use online booking system. “Our clients are busy people, so a facility where clients could book online at any time of day or night, whether they are in London or at the other side of the world, was a no-brainer,” says Gary. And with it taking mere minutes to book your own appointment via the internet, booking online has become extremely popular.

It’s a salon that clearly loves technology – as well as free wi-fi, it was also the first salon in the UK to introduce iPads for the use of customers. “Kids love the iPads,” explains Gary, “they sit and play games or watch videos, making it easier for us to cut their hair. But adults love them too: checking their email, researching their projects, catching up on TV, or just general web-surfing”. It’s another example of how the salon will always go that extra mile to make the customer experience second to none. Another of the points of difference that Gary Ingham offers above all the local competition, is their range of 99% naturally-derived colours, shampoos and treatments from

Aveda. “Aveda is a fantastic brand to work with,” says Gary, “We believe that for beauty to be authentic, it has to care for the world we live in. How can it be beautiful if it damages the environment? Working with products that not only care for the world we live in, but actually work better than any brand I’ve ever used, is amazing. So if you haven’t discovered them already, and you’re looking for a salon that takes every element of the hairdressing experience and polishes it till it gleams, you know where to go. The healthcare revolution is here!

or too long now the government has handed the running of the NHS to various parties, all with differing approaches and visions of steering our beloved NHS into a position of stability and greatness once again. In years gone by people of the UK were in an enviable position, having access to one of the best healthcare systems in the world and one that was free. Unfortunately, with time, the NHS has found itself coming under increasing pressures, both resourced based and financially, the results of which have lead to today’s experiences being both positive and negative. The question is, where do we go from here? Maybe the government will find a solution! In the meantime you could join the healthcare revolution and put your health in your hands! The current UK healthcare system is complicated and disjointed, making it work in a way that is right for you, is often fraught with anxiety and stress. Simply making an appointment to see your own GP, through to getting referrals and waiting for results, can be a nightmare. More often than not the ten minutes we have with our GP does little to inspire us with confidence but more worryingly can result in misdiagnosis which is something that is being reflected more and more in evidence, reports and statistics. This is no reflection on the skills of the GPs working in the NHS, in fact quite the contrary, our NHS GPs are highly skilled individuals that do the most remarkable job with the tools available to them. It is the system that is making their job so much more difficult. If we could have unlimited time with their own GP, make same day appointments, could speak to him/ her on the telephone anytime, including evening and weekends and have a team of individuals working on our behalf to organise every aspect of our health requirements, our primary healthcare would be truly taken care of. With this level of service available to us, we would have ‘Our health in our hands’, and could begin to use the system to our advantage by taking ‘preventative’ steps, using our GP and his/her team to improve and maintain our health, instead of being there to fix us when something goes wrong. The trouble is this is a pipe dream, a fantasy that is unachievable by the NHS! However, it is happening and it is available here in the capital and for as little as £30/month. Harley Street is world famous, establishing its reputation back in the 18th century for exciting, innovations and pioneering developments in medicine, becoming a centre of excellence for cutting edge medicine and that trend still continues today. Harley Street may be considered by many as somewhere only for the rich and famous with Doctors and Consultants charging enormous fees for every consultation, but despite this being the norm, it certainly is not the exception. The exception can be found at Galen Health, designed to give both five star luxury and an exceptional medical service without the excessive

price tag. Galen Health was founded by an exceptionally gifted GP who has worked with inspiring, world leading mentors from across the spectrum of UK healthcare. Dr Lidder leds a team of highly skilled GPs and nurses all at the pinnacle of their professions, and is supported by a team of ‘Healthcare Concierge Assistants’ who ensure that every aspect of care, and every treatment pathway that a Galen Health member receives is completely seamless, from simply organising appointments and referrals, chasing results and organising follow-up care, to organising Nutritionists, Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Personal Trainers, Dentists, Orthodontists, Opticians and many more at excellent rates, most of which can be found on site at Galen Health along with MRI, CT, Ultra Sound, Cone Beam, Thermal Imaging and X ray. When this is combined with a dedicated pathology laboratory providing immediate results, Dr Lidder finds himself at the helm of arguable one of the best and most advanced diagnostic centres in the UK, and as we all know, early diagnosis saves lives, emotions and finance. As a Galen Health member, not only do you get outstanding day-to-day care, but you also have access to world class diagnostics getting to the route of any complications fast. There is no age or medical discrimination and you do not have to leave your NHS practice. If you already have private medical insurance you can nominate your Galen Health GP as ‘Your GP’ which makes obtaining accurate referrals quick and simple, as well as stress free, knowing that your healthcare assistant is organising everything for you. If, however, you do not have health insurance, your healthcare assistant will act on your behalf liaising with the NHS to ensure you get your referral as quickly as possible after establishing a ‘Shared care’ relationship. £30/month gives unlimited FREE consultations with your own private Harley Street GP in person or on the telephone from 08:00 – 22:00 (24/7 for £50/month members) plus your own personal ‘Healthcare Assistant’ and access to the full range of Galen Health services at a discounted rate.

Simply making an appointment to see your own GP, through to getting referrals and waiting for results, can be a nightmare.

Marylebone’s Urban Oasis

w

ith the hustle and bustle of modern day life in London, it is becoming more important for us to take time to relax. This month, we were invited to ‘Crystal Palace’ in Marylebone, to experience first hand, their locally renowned Turkish Bath and Spa. Whether you are fan, or a stranger to spa experiences, Crystal Palace Spa deserve attention. Located on Crawford St, Marylebone, it would be easy to dismiss the Spa as a modern luxury hair salon. Once you have checked in at reception, you will be walked to the spa downstairs. The soft furnished seating room acts as a fantastic ‘chill out’ area for before, or after your treatment. Ambient lighting, soft music and aromas of incense then guide you through the building, as you pass the doors to each marble and tile clad treatment room, offering a small snippet of what is in store. Staff are immediately on hand, to make sure you completely looked after, going well out their way to ensure you are well hydrated, comfortable and have everything that you need. Every inch of the décor is magnificent, maintaining a truly authentic Turkish feel. In the changing area, you have everything you need to get ready in your own time. Spacious lockers, showers, clean towels and slippers are all readily available for you to prepare. Once changed, you will be led to the steam room for a 10-15 minute

84 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

wet steam. The beautifully carved tiled stone remains cool on your skin, whilst the controlled steam is perfectly soothing and not overbearing. An authentic and ornate bronze faucet sits in at the end of the room, with warm or cool water to use as you wish. Once the steam is finished and the skin is prepared, a member of staff will walk you to one of their two large marble rooms, to begin the ‘Peeling Process’ of the Turkish bath. Despite it’s un-attractive sound, the ‘peeling process’ plays a vital part in the rejuvenation you feel following the bath. A semi coarse glove is used, to massage and exfoliate your entire body (and face at request). The feeling is surprisingly pleasant, and the results of exfoliation quite literally, need to be seen to be believed. Once the scrub is complete, the fresh tingling feeling of your body is further pampered with a full foam massage. The foam is created using a cotton bag (an authentic tradition) with a natural soap. Crystal Palace have a variety of soaps to cater for different skin, all with their own unique smells and ingredients. The entire body from head to toe is then massaged in this process to not only rejuvenate your skin but unwind aching and tired muscles. Once this process is complete, you are free to shower in your own privacy in the marble room, further unwind and return back to the changing area, where a warm drink, comfy seating area and friendly staff are waiting for you.

Crystal Palace describes themselves as: ‘A unique place to relieve, relax and revive yourself ’ and they more than live up to the title. They appear to have found a perfect synergy between the freedom one needs to relax and the service one expects from a luxury establishment. The staff could not do more to help, but remain in the background, at your convenience. The facilities are simple, easy to navigate yet layered with refined luxury, to make you feel well looked after. It is this attention to detail, which makes the service accessible to business people on an hour lunch break, or to men and women who want to spend a morning to relish the pampering. In addition to the Turkish bath experience, Crystal Palace offer a Moroccan bath, a variety of foam massage, peeling and therapy treatments, body masks, aroma-therapy, and numerous specialist massage programs to choose from. Surprisingly, each service is very reasonably priced with a Turkish bath available for just £50. We all feel a little smarter following a hair cut or a bit more flexible after a massage but a Turkish Bath at Crystal Palace offers a unique and fantastic feeling inside the body, deep in your muscles and all over your skin! You really have to experience it for yourself.

A Natural Look & A National Search For A New Model & Face with Perfect C

Promoting The Message That Natural is Beautiful

N

early two-thirds of women are unhappy with their bust size and shape, with 60% feeling that their partners would prefer they had bigger assets, according to a recent poll. The survey on women’s body shapes, conducted by leading UK online cosmetic advisor, myfacemybody.com, also found that 67% of respondents would opt for a non-surgical procedure over surgery. Furthermore, 73% confirmed that they felt pressured by images of women in the media. And when asked what they would spend to enhance their current look, more than 30% said they would only spend up to £1000, whilst a further 30% thought that the sky was the limit in terms of achieving physical perfection. MyFaceMyBody.com founder, Stephen Handisides, said: “We hadn’t realised such a high percentage of 86 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

women are dissatisfied with their bust size and are keen to do something about it.” In response to this growing trend, Perfect C, the UK’s leading natural breast enhancing supplement has teamed up with leading industry experts to promote the message that cosmetic surgery isn’t the only way to achieving your desired look. The brand, reportedly a favourite of celebs including Sienna Miller and Tara PT, is simultaneously conducting a nationwide model search to front its new campaign, where a natural and ‘real’ look will be at the top of the list. The model search, to be conducted online as well as at this year’s Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model exhibition at London’s Excel from 29th – 31st October, will simultaneously promote the message that the natural look is now leading the way.

Said one model agency spokesman, “We are finding more and more that our clients no longer want cosmetically enhanced girls representing their brands. Therefore, it is important that there are products out there that can offer a viable and safe alternative to surgery, while informing young aspiring models as well as ordinary women that surgery is not the only route available.”

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Perfect C will be donating 5% of profits from sales of Perfect C during this period to breast cancer research. Dr Ariel Haus, an expert in anti-ageing is inviting patients who want instant results for a fresher look to opt for Restylane Vital in restoring skin vitality whilst combating the signs of ageing. Treatments are available now at Dr Haus’ Harley Street clinic and all treatments result in skin looking and feeling both smoother and more toned. Creams and moisturisers simply cannot combat signs of ageing or nurture the skin in the same way that Restylane Vital does. Promoting the production of healthy skin by balancing the nutritional environment of the skin at cellular level by attracting and releasing water when needed, Restylane Vital boosts skin elasticity leaving it looking smoother. Skin condition is evidently improved and the lustre restored. Examples include prominent veins and sun damage on say the backs of hands; Restylane Vital combats the combined effects of ageing eliminating the visible damage. As with all of Dr Haus’ treatments- Restylane Vital is clinically proven and used by him in a safe environment. A recent clinical study in Germany demonstrated that Restylane Vital improves skin elasticity and decreases skin surface roughness. The results are smoother, firmer, toned, healthy looking skin with an overall revitalised appearance. The procedure is simple, pain free and quick. Targeting a broad range of areas from face, neck, hands and the area between the neck and breasts, it replenishes the Hyaluronic acid lost through

Hyaluronic acid is completely broken down within the skin. Depending on age repeat sessions are recommended every four to six months. With a proven track record spanning over 12 years and over 10 million treatments worldwide, Restylane is a

safe market leader in antiageing which is entirely non-animal derived. Dr Haus has just returned from a Scandinavian tour where he gave conferences for Restylane and received an excellent response. Says Dr Haus; ‘After the summer break I always see an increase in patients seeking a variety of anti-ageing treatments and Restylane Vital delivers optimal results. People need to take greater care of their appearances and I help with that. With Restylane’s ease, safety and guaranteed results it is now one of the most popular treatments I perform for patients seeking radiant and healthy looking skin. If you have skin problems or issues with say the shape of the nose or lips then this is a treatment that works. Above all my patients feel new and leave the clinic with a new air of confidence and a glowing look.’ Dr Haus also offers all manner of non invasive treatments at his clinic including; VelaShape, Peels, Anti-Wrinkle Treatments using Botulinum Toxin, Dermal Fillers, and Laser hair removal. ‘Journey into the unknown...’ Most engagements of renowned Interior Designer, Kathryn Levitt come armed with a great deal of trust. This featured restoration project recently completed in one of Belgravia’s best addresses was no exception.

The design brief was to create an opulent classical modern interior utilising high quality materials and finishes throughout yet to provide practical space suitable for modern day living and incorporating all of the features and gadgets one would expect from a penthouse type apartment. The control system for the whole property can be controlled from an Ipad not only from anywhere within the apartment but remotely from anywhere across the world. One of the greatest challenges facing Kathryn was to reinstate the geometry and proportions of the original principal rooms to bring back the grandeur and feeling of space. The sense of arrival is immediate on entering the apartment with handmade gold leaf wallpapers providing an instant feeling of luxury leading into the superb open plan kitchen fitted with the latest Bulthaup units. As the kitchen/dining space leads into the Drawing Room, the feeling of height is simply awesome revealing many of the newly restored original ceiling cornice and joinery details. The original features have now been beautifully complemented with new pieces such as the handcrafted media and display unit which also serves to cleverly overcome

Speaking little English and with literally no understanding of the complex UK planning, building regulations or landlord’s approval systems, the new overseas based owner of this Grade II listed Cadogan Place apartment placed the entire design and construction process in the hands of this very capable London based designer and her project management team. With communication hindered not only by language barriers but by thousands of miles and the clients’ limited knowledge of the high end London property market, Kathryn Levitt Design was able to guide them through the whole process from concept design through to completion with stunning results.

the complexity of introducing air conditioning into a listed property. The apartment has been beautifully furnished and dressed with carefully selected pieces from Kathryn’s portfolio of suppliers and manufacturers from across the globe and further enhanced with some of the finest materials and fabrics available. Whilst it is hard for anyone not to be impressed with the end results of this now simply stunning luxury residence, the client has benefited first hand from the totally professional design and project management provided by Kathryn Levitt Design and their journey from the once

By choosing the most innovative products and the finest fittings, you can be assured your bathroom will be like no other. likes and dislikes. We will then arrange a mutually convenient time to visit your home to view the space and take detailed measurements. Your designer will then work on ideas, designs and product options producing drawings and quotations to discuss together. If you are at the early stage of a building project or extension, we are also experienced in working from architects drawings.

Points to consider: The guidelines for the height of a wash basin are 850mm high A wall mounted basin gives the illusion of more space as your eyes are drawn to the edges of the room, and using wall mounted taps can create a sense of extra space, once you have chosen the wall mounted taps, you will need to ensure that they are compatible. Points to consider: length of the spout do you want to wash your hands under the tap or merely to fill the basin – different spout lengths are available. You know when you have made the right decision Could you explain what renewable energy is? Why we need it and where you see the role of BritishEco in the complete picture? Renewable energy is energy that is naturally replenished from the sun, wind, rain and geothermal heat. Renewable energy systems extract this energy and convert it into heat and electricity; because it is naturally replenished quickly it does not consume valuable carbon based fuel sources. It has been well documented that carbon based fuel sources are decreasing, ever difficult and expensive to find and extract and tend to be located in less stable countries than our own. Switching a portion of our energy consumption away from fossil fuels to naturally replenished energy sources means, not only, will we move away from our dependence on fossil fuels, we will gain a much stronger and more secure supply for the future. The BritishEco vision is to provide both individuals and organisations with affordable and reliable renewable energy systems. Is BritishEco a local company? Yes, we are a national company with regional offices across the country. This ensures you get the service and support you need locally, backed up by the head office to ensure you receive the best equipment at the best prices covered by our comprehensive warranties. BritishEco Consultants are professional, industry experts with an extensive knowledge of renewable energies. They provide reliable and honest advice on all renewable technologies. They will also be able to advise you on Government incentives and grants and any local incentives in your area. 104 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

What is the most popular domestic renewable energy opportunities BritishEco specialise in? We specialise in the main renewable technologies for the domestic and commercial market such as, solar photovoltaic (PV) cells for generating electricity, heat pumps, biomass boilers and solar thermal panels to heat your hot water and property, as well as rainwater harvesting and wind turbines.

Won’t these options cost a fortune to install or are there perhaps, government grants available as an incentive – if so, who can claim and how much financial help is available to each household? In April 2010 the Government backed Feed-In Tariffs (FITs) scheme was launched to enable people to be paid for generating electricity from solar panels or a wind turbine fitted in or at their property. In addition to being paid by the Feed-In Tariffs you will also be able to use the electricity you generate for free. The amount you receive for generating electricity can be secured for 25 years; index linked and is completely tax free. The benefits that you will receive for installing

solar panels are 43.3p for every unit of electricity you generate, whether you use it or not. Whatever electricity you do not use you can sell back to the grid and receive a minimum, additional 3 pence for every unit. A typical 4kw domestic solar pv system could attract £1485 per year from the Feed-In Tariffs, £51 from exporting to the national grid and a £206.00 saving on their electricity bill, giving a total benefit to you of

£1742.00 every year for 25 years. Are there complicated issues about securing planning approval to install a domestic renewable energy source? Most renewable energy technologies do not now require planning permission. The Government has relaxed the planning regulations to encourage domestic customers to embrace renewable energy. Wind turbines do still require planning permission and there are environmental and neighbour issues still surrounding them but the acceptance of turbines at both national and local level is increasing. How quickly would an

installation from BritishEco take, who undertakes the work? A typical domestic installation from the point of ordering to being switched on is 6-8 weeks this includes all the detailed design, testing and full commissioning of the system. Each regional office has its own MCS accredited installation teams based locally. How long before a home owner starts to see a benefit or evens gets a return on their investment? As soon as the system is commissioned and the home owner is in receipt of all the necessary documentation that BritishEco will provide them with they are able to begin claiming the Feed-In Tariff and start generating a return on investment. Does BritishEco have any accreditation that offers home owners peace of mind? For the property owner to be eligible for the feed in tariff they must have the system designed, installed and commission by an MCS accredited company. BritishEco are MCS accredited and members of the Renewable Energy Association (REA). Alongside the manufacturers warranties BritishEco offer a 10 year guarantee on the installation of solar photovoltaic panels. Where and how do interested home owners begin the process of discussing the installation of a renewable energy source? By calling us on 0845 257 0041 we will be able to discuss your requirements and put you in touch with our local consultant who will be able to advise you further. ‘Whether your personal style is contemporary or classic, I can transform your apartment, town or country home – either here and abroad – into your ideal setting, one that reflects your personality, your needs and your sense of place.’ Mary says. She has three rules of practice. Firstly, she has no set house style, a decision based on years of experience. ‘I know that what I create for my clients can’t just be a stunning design, it must also be suited to their lifestyle and form a liveable backdrop that caters to their everyday needs’. The second rule is that the highest standards of

and hasn’t looked back since. Mary is also an active committee member of the British Institute of Interior Design. It is her love and knowledge of history that helped Mary win the commission to design a

suite at the Cumberland Hotel, Marble Arch to mark the 40th anniversary of the death of Jimi Hendrix. Mary’s challenge was to design a suite that not only represented Hendrix, his passion for music and his vibrant character but also create a room in flamboyant 60s style. Working with her senior design associate Cynthia Garcia, she brought in Andie Airfix (a graphic designer for some of the world’s greatest rock bands, including The Rolling Stones, Sir Paul McCartney and Led Zeppelin), with former NME editor and friend of Hendrix, Keith Altham, as a consultant. The Hendrix suite was instantly an enormous success both with hotel guests and with the press who described it as ‘a hugely entertaining suite’ (Time Out) and ‘a fun experience’ (The Telegraph). Although Mary’s true passion lies in 18th and 19th century design, the success of the Jimmy Hendrix suite confirms that she is not restricted to designing for any particular period. ‘I relish the challenge whether you want to take a historical reference and place it in a modern setting or you are looking for something more contemporary,’ Mary stresses.

Have you ever sat and stared at an aquarium? You find yourself relaxed. Lost in the moment simply looking at the bright, beautifully coloured fish. Then you wonder how much money and effort it would take to get one for yourself ? Then you realise that maybe it’s not so relaxing anymore!

ntroducing an aquarium for people who want to keep fish - but think it’s too much work. Say hello to a biOrb. In 1999 Reef One, the manufacturers of biOrb ripped up the rule book and started again. They set out on a mission to make better aquariums. Reef One said “We wanted them to be so good, that you’d want to tell your friends about them”. So how did they do it?

They started with the filter. In many traditional aquariums the filter is on the side or at the top. In a biOrb it’s at the bottom, which might seem unimportant until you realise that fish waste sinks. Think about it, there’s no point vacuuming your ceiling when the dirt is on the floor. The filter itself takes about 40 seconds to change and only needs doing about once a month. Water oxygenation was the next challenge. See the tube in the middle of the aquarium? It has an airline running into it. Air is blown through the base of a biOrb up to the surface.

This has two main benefits, it 100% oxygenates* the water and it drives a circular water flow making sure all the water passes through the filter. How’s it made? biOrbs are not made from glass, they’re made from acrylic. Acrylic is ten times stronger than glass. It’s also clearer. Acrylic has a transparency rate of 93% making it the clearest material known. Glass only allows 70% of light to pass through and thick glass always has a green tint. The final challenge was lighting. In a biOrb, the lighting is always built in – you’d be forgiven for not even knowing it was there - that is, until you switch it on. In the LIFE range (shown) the lighting is fully automatic. There is a sunrise, daylight, sunset and a blue moonlight. The aquarium lighting actually changes throughout the day. All in all, the biOrb is a low maintenance aquarium for people who’d like to keep fish, but think it’s too much work. Visit www.reef-one.com * University of Vetinary Medicine in Hannover.

“Is this the most ingenious aquarium in the world?” S

tandard aquariums are made from sheets of glass. We only ever use acrylic. Why? Because it’s 10 times stronger than glass, which is important. Just ask anyone who’s broken a glass aquarium and flooded their home. Did you know it’s also noticeably clearer? Acrylic has a transparency rate of 93% making it the clearest material known. Glass only allows 70% of light to pass through and thick glass always has a green tint. With an acrylic biOrb it’s been said that “it’s like watching fish in high-definition”.

The truth about filters

Many traditional aquariums have a filter stuck to the side or at the top, but guess what - fish waste sinks. All biOrbs have a filter at the bottom of the aquarium. Put simply, a biOrb filter works where there is most to filter. We’ve also made it easy to replace. It takes seconds to do. Inside the patented biOrb filter

Folklore vs science, you decide

Fish keeping folklore says that you must have a large surface area of water in order to have good water oxygenation. That’s why standard aquariums are rectangular with the long edge at the top. Like many folklores it’s not the full story. You can have 100% water oxygenation, by design and engineering. But don’t take our word for it. We asked the renowned University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany to do an independent test against a standard rectangular aquarium. This is what they told us, word for word.

The oxygen concentrations in the biOrb aquarium were higher than in the rectangular aquarium. The oxygen concentrations in the biOrb aquarium were probably higher due to the vigorous aeration and turbulence. This keeps the gases in equilibrium with the air above the water surface. This caused the gases to be well distributed and redundant gases to be easily expelled

nd yet so few of us plan our own funeral or the place we wish to be buried at. It may only be when you are faced with the task of making funeral arrangements for a loved one that the thought occurs of making plans for yourself-when the stress involved becomes a reality–yet very few of us go ahead and proceed. Death is not a topic that is easy to discuss either with family or friends, but having to make funeral arrangements for a loved one without knowing their wishes can be extremely difficult. Woodland Burial Parks offers an Instalment Plan for Graves and Ashes Plots; an administration fee is levied depending upon the period of repayment. The grave/ashes plot is reserved from the date the initial deposit/payment is received. The purchase price is held at the level agreed when the first payment is made. This protects against any future price increase of the plot during the lifetime of the Instalment Plan. Individuals who have made a pre-need purchase tell us how important it is for them that they have personally chosen, and paid for their graves in advance. Securing a burial plot in times of decreasing burial space offers an inflation proofing decision, and takes away the stress of the family member(s) making the final arrangements in are they fulfilling the individuals final wishes. Graves have been selected adjacent to other family members, creating family areas where relatives can be laid to rest under the same tree. It is the peace of mind given by making these final 116 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

arrangements, even when in the best of health that encourages people to choose their own grave. Chiltern Woodland Burial Park has a mature woodland landscape, providing a haven for wildlife and natural plant growth. This is proactively managed by a team at the site under the jurisdiction of a Woodland Manager. Chiltern Woodland Burial Park is truly a cemetery of our time, a unique, stunningly beautiful place where burials, ash interments and ash scatterings take place beneath mature trees, providing a natural choice for the bereaved and those choosing to plan their final resting place. The fully serviced site provide a location for the celebration of life in one place, whether religious, nonaligned faith or secular. Our facilities provide an alternative to either established religious venues or crematoria. The Woodland Park has ceremonial buildings that families can use for either religious or secular ceremonies. The tranquil woodland of the park not only provides enjoyment and beauty as it changes through the seasons, but also represents the natural cycle of life. THE RANGE ROVER EVOQUE September heralds the arrival of the all-new Range Rover Evoque, a vehicle that is as breath-taking to look at as it is to drive. The Range Rover Evoque goes on sale across Surrey having completed a punishing schedule of more than a million development miles in 20 countries - including 5,000miles of testing at the Nürburgring. Available as a stunning coupé or a practical 5-Door model, the Range Rover Evoque brings agile handling and concept car looks to the classic Range Rover package of luxury and all-terrain performance. The Range Rover Evoque exudes dynamic elegance and is available in

three core design themes - from the cool and contemporary ‘Pure’, to the bold and sporting ‘Dynamic’ and the luxurious ‘Prestige’ package – though customers can personalise their vehicle with an array of colour, trim and accessory options. Additional exterior styling items include bright side protection tubes, bodyside decals, coloured wheel centres, and alloy wheels in alternative finishes. Within the vehicle, customers can select features like metal sports pedals and illuminated aluminium and chrome tread plates. The Range Rover Evoque’s interior is deceptively spacious given its

compact proportions and a full-sized panoramic glass roof can be selected in both the coupé and 5-Door to flood the interior with natural light if desired. As you would expect from a Range Rover, the interior features high quality materials and craftsmanship but sees them applied in a more contemporary and sporting fashion. Among the special touches are premium leather with twin-needle stitching on the instrument panel, doors and seats, plus displays that come to life through a choreographed start-up sequence. The Range Rover Evoque provides customers with a host of premium technologies - including an 8-inch,

high-definition touch-screen display with optional dual-view technology that allows a passenger to watch a DVD while the driver follows navigation instructions. Entertainment options include Digital and Satellite TV, DVD playback capability - which passengers can enjoy via 8-inch screens mounted in the headrests and digital infrared wireless headphones. New sound systems, developed in partnership with audio specialist Meridian and including a range-topping 825W, 17-speaker system, are also available. However, the true test is how it drives and it is here that a million

EVOQUE

development miles prove their worth. Starting with the Range Rover Sport, which has a similar DNA to a luxury sports saloon, dynamics specialists set out to give the Range Rover Evoque a sporting character consistent with its looks. They focused on ensuring that the Range Rover Evoque was agile and fun to drive, so particular attention was paid to steering precision and agility at lower speeds. As a result it offers a rewarding experience even during day-to-day urban driving but retains excellent body control and suffers no loss of poise. Taking ride and handling to the next level, Range Rover Evoque customers have the opportunity to specify a state-of-the-art new Adaptive Dynamics feature, which sees MagneRide™ dampers monitoring and adapting to vehicle movements 1000 times/second* to help minimise body roll and provide an even more balanced drive. Naturally the Range Rover Evoque delivers all-surface capability and makes use of a unique suite of technologies to maximise performance and comfort in

challenging on- and off-road conditions. These include the latest version of the company’s signature Terrain ResponseTM system – which has settings for General Driving, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts and Sand to optimise driveability and comfort. When specifying the Adaptive Dynamics feature there is also an additional ‘Dynamic’ setting. For customers looking for reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the Evoque is the first Range Rover to offer a choice between the standard, full-time four-wheel-drive system and a frontwheel-drive option tuned to deliver the same agile handling. A choice of engines are available from a 150hp 2.2 litre turbo diesel eD4 engine that delivers less than 129g/km CO2 (in front-wheeldrive coupé form), to a 190hp SD4 version which gets from 0-60mph in 8.0 seconds when equipped with the automatic gearbox and a new 240hp 2.0 litre

turbo-charged petrol engine capable of 0-60mph in just 7.1 seconds. The Range Rover Evoque’s compact size has enabled engineers to minimise weight, improve aerodynamics and reduce the quantity of materials required to produce it. Each car also uses 16kg of recycled plastic material in components including wheel arch liners and the engine cover - diverting many tonnes of waste from landfill. On sale from September, the Range

Rover Evoque represents desirable sophistication - priced from £27,955 for an eD4 ‘Pure’ 5-door model (equipped with 6 speed manual gearbox and two–wheel drive) to £44,320 for a top-ofthe-range Si4 ‘Dynamic’ coupé (equipped with 6 speed automatic gearbox and LUX pack).

THE RIGHT TYPE OF STOCKBROKER FOR YOU

P

utting Discretionary Portfolio Management to one side, there are two different Stockbroking services available, Advisory and Execution Only (XO). Do you understand the difference? It is not all about price. The most apparent difference is in the pricing. XO firms variously charge from £10 to £20 per trade, whereas an Advisory firm will commonly charge a percentage of the trade value, subject to a minimum. Killik & Co charges 1.65% on the first £15,000 of the consideration and 0.5% on the excess, subject to a minimum of £30. So you can see that XO is significantly cheaper. The obvious differences in service levels are pretty well understood. An Advisory Stockbroker can help with investment ideas and can point out the risks on different investments. They can also help and advise on market timing and asset allocation, to make 120 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

sure that a list of investments is adequately balanced and not too exposed to a given sector or geographic area. However, a very important difference is generally not recognised by investors and that is trade execution. To understand this, you have to recognise that the Stock Market is precisely that, a ‘market’. It is a place where buyer meets seller and the most efficient transaction is where the buyer and seller interact with each other and both are satisfied with the bargain. However, a third party often places himself between the buyer and the seller and he is called a market maker. In London, for most mid and large cap companies, the process of price formation primarily takes place through the Stock Exchange Order Book. There are two primary ways of using the Order Book, either you put a limit order on the book and wait to be ‘hit’ or you take out an existing limit

order on the other side of the trade. Either way, the seller and the buyer are interacting directly with each other and no third party is involved, to the benefit of one or both. When dealing through an XO firm, an order is channelled not to the Stock Exchange but to a group of market makers known as Retail Service Providers (RSPs). They are third party institutions who trade as middle men, between buyers and sellers and they take the difference in price between what the seller receives and the buyer pays. They reference the Order Book price, but they only occasionally interact directly with the Order Book, meaning that most retail trades don’t really contribute to the price formation process, unless or until the RSP uses the Order Book to square up his own book. Whilst electronic trading through RSPs will generally lead to a good price on highly liquid large caps where the

difference between the selling price and the buying price, on the Order Book, is narrow. This is frequently not the case in the less liquid mid and small caps where the difference between the selling price and the buying price can be quite wide. This is where an Advisory Broker can potentially more than cover the higher commission charged, by manually trading either on the Order Book or by phone, locating someone on the other side of the trade, to try to match both buyer and seller. At Killik & Co over half the trades are manually dealt by experienced dealers as it’s believed that this leads to better prices than if the same trades were executed electronically with RSPs. ssie Stewart has participated in three Olympic Games as part of a sailing team for team GB and looks forward to the 2012 London games with great anticipation. He won Bronze in the Barcelona games. Here he talks about how his passion for all things water has extended to owning and running a unique and new events space; Ravens Ait Island on the River Thames at Kingston upon Thames in Surrey. “You can’t even imagine the work that goes into participating in at the Olympics but it is all so enjoyable and unique. Everything about taking part in the Olympics in unique from the experience to the Olympic Village which has to cater for thousands of athletes all demanding hundreds of varieties of cuisine- this is just one element that forms part of what I have been involved in for years.” Ossie is a charismatic man who this year unveiled Ravens Ait Island located on the River 122 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1

Thames as a unique event space that can cater for 500 guests. The island is magical and has several areas ideal for both indoor and outdoor events. Ossie is never too far from the water or his passion- sailing. Only last month he organised a Regatta on Ravens Ait Island featuring fellow Olympic champions. “I hosted a Regatta event on Ravens Ait Island recently where fellow Olympic medallists participated including Ben Ainslie and Michael McIntre. Getting together with fellow Sailors is always fun. The event was won by Nathan Wilmot a member of the Australian sailing team. Locals and sailing fans attended and we tied it in with a Caribbean theme as it was around Carnival weekend- that’s the nice thing about Ravens Ait Island, you can pretty much create

whatever event you want.” Ravens Ait Island features landscaped lawns, a marquee, a ballroom and a suite dedicated to all manner of events. Because of the indoor & outdoor available space all types of events can be organised including Weddings & Civil Ceremonies (fully licenced). Ossie recently organised the island’s first wedding which guests described as “magical”. Ossie has spent over a year refurbishing and re-establishing Ravens Ait Island as a beautiful location with features including a huge willow tree looking healthy over a clean, crisp and elegant large lawn area. Inside design elements feature excellent lighting options, modern furniture with a classic twist. The entire look and feel of Ravens Ait Island make you want to stay on for much

longer. There are future plans to add bedrooms which will no doubt make Ravens Ait Island even more magical. Ossie is passionate about the forthcoming games and will be organising Olympic themed events on Ravens Ait Island whilst himself participating at next year’s games as a chief marshal for the sailing. The island can be hired exclusively or parts of it can be hired. To further add to the already wow factors, Ravens Ait Island also offer cruises on a beautiful Edwardian launch boat which meets guests and ferries them on a journey of discovery along the vast River Thames before disembarking into the magic that island life offers. Ossie Stewart often speaks at events as a guest speaker, at the moment all the talking is about his latest venture – Ravens Ait Island. www.ravensait.co.uk Ravens Ait Island, Portsmouth Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey 020 8339 6960
