45 Park Lane’s Penthouse Suite offers the complete package with Rolls-Royce Wraith drive experience

T

he ultimate modern gentleman’s drive at the ultimate modern gentleman’s hotel (London) Dorchester Collection’s contemporary Mayfair hotel, 45 Park Lane, has joined forces with Rolls-Royce to offer guests of the Penthouse Suite a spin in the luxury car manufacturer’s newest model, Wraith. Guests booking the Penthouse Suite will be able to spirit away the Wraith for an exhilarating half day drive experience during their stay, available from 1st November 2013. Guests of the Penthouse Suite at 45 Park Lane will be amongst the first in the world to take to the road in the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever built, making seeing the iconic sights of London all the more memorable. Recommended drives include the famous Mall to take in Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square, on to Whitehall to skirt Big Ben finishing up along the Victoria Embankment to Tower Bridge. Keen car enthusiasts may prefer to open up the engine en route to Coworth Park, Dorchester Collection’s luxury country house hotel in Ascot for lunch, a polo lesson or a spa day by the pool. After a thrilling turn behind the wheel of the new motor car, guests will be welcomed back to 45 Park Lane to enjoy a special Wraith cocktail in Bar 45 mixed with ingredients that conjure the Wraith experience. A choice of three different varieties, or ‘speeds’, of Rémy Martin Cognac – VSOP, Coeur de Cognac and XO – offer degrees of intensity, flavour and finish. The addition of ginger which like the Wraith, has a natural tendency to make the hairs at the nape of the neck stand up, evokes the thrill of adrenaline. “45 Park Lane is a natural fit for a Wraith drive,” said Rolls-Royce design director Giles Taylor. “The story of the Honourable Charles Rolls begins in Mayfair, who throughout his life was a man who embraced the very finest things – the refinement and luxury of every Rolls-Royce and the ambience of contemporary London society. Were he alive today, I’m sure he would delight in sharing a Wraith cocktail with fellow guests at 45 Park Lane and exchanging tales of adventures from behind the wheel.”

Wraith is the latest model in Rolls-Royce’s range of ultra-luxury models, and is the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever to have played host to the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. The Wraith’s fastback styling allows for a powerful drive, but at its heart lies the hallmark attributes of Rolls-Royce luxury, refinement and hand-craftsmanship. 45 Park Lane offers the pinnacle of luxury for its guests. With interiors by internationally acclaimed designer Thierry W. Despont awarded ‘Best Hotel Suite in Europe’ at the annual European Hospitality Awards in November 2012, the Penthouse Suite provides a smart, contemporary, central location from which to enjoy London. Accessed only by a key controlled lift the two-bedroomed Penthouse Suite covers the entire top floor of the hotel, and features a wraparound terrace with outdoor seating and panoramic views over London. An oval dining-room provides residents the opportunity to enjoy Wolfgang Puck’s CUT menu in the comfort and privacy of their own suite. The Wraith cocktail at Bar 45 starts at £16 for the Rémy Martin Cognac - VSOP, £25 with Coeur de Cognac, and £50 with XO. Rates for the Penthouse Suite at 45 Park Lane start from £7,194 including breakfast and VAT. Two Wraith cocktails are offered complimentary to guests at the Penthouse Suite. www.dorchestercollection.com

T

he Winter Fine Art & Antiques Fair is now in its 23rd year. Taking place in the iconic Olympia exhibition halls, it is one of the most important art and antiques events of the year. This year, the Fair has aligned its dates with the influential Asian Art in London 2013, further increasing the lure of London as an art and antiques destination at this time of year. The Winter Fine Art & Antiques Fair showcases classic British design, antiques and art through the ages from the 16th century to modern British. By hand picking the UK’s top exhibitors and keeping the look both glamorous and up to date, the fair attracts a loyal following of leading interior designers and collectors, as well as shoppers looking for more unusual pieces. An eclectic mixture of pieces from delicate glass to sturdy, 17th century oak furniture keeps the event inspiring as well as being a source of the unexpected. This year the fair will attract 130 exhibitors and 22,000 visitors. The quality of exhibit is kept high by a process of strictly vetting items by a team of industry experts (who check all the items on the stands for authenticity) and by its alliance with the country’s top two trade associations, BADA and LAPADA. A Coromandel, Satinwood and brass-mounted games compendium could herald a welcome alternative to Christmas Day TV repeats. Anthea AG Antiques deals in fine gem-set jewellery c 1840 – 1940 and sells pieces by Cartier and Van Kleef Arpels in their 20th century heyday. Who would be your ideal person to sit next to at a dinner party? Dame Judi Dench seems lovely and would love to chat with her….. Prince William would be lovely too. Who would be your ideal person to cook for? My family and friends, the food is only as important as the people you are with so if I was with loved ones I would happily cook scrambled eggs, fillet of beef or a cake.. it would all be appreciated. What ingredients could you not do without in your kitchen? That’s a tricky one… butter and sugar What/who inspired you to start cooking? My cookery teacher at school, called Miss Date she was the first person to encourage me and make me think I was good at anything. You’re a regular at the BBC Good Food Shows up and down the country – do you think it’s important for a chef to be able to cook live in front of an audience? I am quite different to the chefs as I am a home cook, so for me it is wonderful to meet the people who buy my books and watch me on TV, its more about the interaction with the audience. What do you love about cooking Live on stage? I am not flamboyant in anyway, but I do love to see people’s faces and smiles. I love it when someone says they made my “such and such” recipe and the family enjoyed it. I love teaching people how to cook, so for me the Food shows are all about encouraging people to cook at home and give them confidence that they can do it.

Art For All

An affordable alternative amidst London’s high rolling Autumn fairs

F

amed for its affiliation with world class art, London has played host to the likes of Lichtenstein, Lowry and Manet this year, but away from the high ceiling prices, lavish exhibitions and auctions this Autumn is a fair that helps those with a more modest budget find a piece of art they can cherish forever. First opened in 1999, the Affordable Art Fair is defined by its friendly, unfussy approach and its wide offering of contemporary art, with all pieces on sale priced from £40 - £4,000. Mixing well known names with recent graduates from top art colleges across the UK guarantees an eclectic mix of paintings, original artist-made prints, sculpture and photography all on offer from over 100 galleries under one roof. This Autumn, pieces that visitors can snap up include rare photographs of Andy Warhol, on sale for the first time in the UK, works created from burning credit cards by Rob Tarbell and a unique painting by Adebanji Alade which was created over 24 hours on Kensington High Street. Visitors should also look out for Mychael Barrett’s series of etchings paying loving homage to great artists through portraits of their imagined pets. Each piece of art is available to buy and take

home the very same day making the fair perfect for those looking for a unique one-off purchase as well as more seasoned collectors looking to expand their existing collection. Children will also have smiles on their faces during a day out at the fair, with those aged 4 – 11 given a Kid’s Activity Guide to inspire and delight them. The Education Space offers children the chance to create their own mini masterpiece and, for very little ones that may prefer to play while parents browse, the on-site crèche is a bright and fun space for under 5’s. Will Ramsay, Founder of the Affordable Art Fair, comments “There’s a fantastic spread of art shows, auctions and exhibitions in the capital this Autumn, but if you want to learn more about art, don’t have a squillion pound budget and, most of all, want a great day out, then the Affordable Art Fair is the place for you.” Not only is there a full programme of workshops, tours and talks plus an all-day bar and café to keep visitors entertained and refreshed inside the fair, the leafy location of Battersea Park is bursting with lots to do and see too, confirming that Affordable Art Fair is the number one destination for an arty, fun packed family day out.

The Affordable Art Fair has revolutionised and democratised the art market with its fun and accessible approach, bringing art under £4,000 to its three UK locations: Battersea Park, Hampstead Heath, and Bristol. Every fair offers something different, with a diverse range of local, national and international galleries at each showcasing art in an array of styles. Pieces by household names sit alongside the latest emerging talent. The concept has become a global phenomenon with 16 fairs in 14 cities across 4 continents. A RICH HISTORY OF EDUCATING YOUNG MINDS

At Virgo Prep - An independent school for boys and girls aged 3-11

V

irgo Prep has a rich history of educating young minds. Founded in 1848, it is part of a Catholic order where teaching is based on Christian principles with an emphasis on caring and kindness to others. This independent school is open to children of all faiths from 3-11 years.

The main objective of Virgo Prep is to encourage every child to be the best they can be. By maintaining small class sizes, each child receives a personalised education from experienced staff while they develop their talents. Specialist teachers are provided for French, Art, Sports and Music. This approach has proven effective, with all Year 6 pupils achieving 100% in Maths, Science and English before progressing to a wide range of independent, grammar and state schools. Virgo Prep has been described as “South London’s best kept secret” due to the warm and safe feeling of this small school set in large grounds, with a woodland area providing a superb location for outdoor learning. Each key stage has a separate playground, allowing children to flourish with their peers. The vast playing fields regularly host major ISA sporting events including cricket, rugby, football, golf and cross-country.

4 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

The Virgo Prep Nursery provides a nurturing environment where children settle in quickly and enjoy the benefits of being located within the Prep school. Ofsted said “The quality of teaching and learning is outstanding. Children’s attitudes to learning, their behaviour and general level of engagement are excellent, aiding them to make superb progress. The leadership and management are outstanding and extremely effective in promoting an inclusive environment in which every child matters.” In a parent’s words, “I just wanted to thank you and your wonderful school for everything you have done. He has loved every moment of his time at Virgo Prep and he is truly sad to leave, just as we all are.” Extensive co-curricular opportunities range from additional foreign languages to gardening clubs, from ballet to Tae Kwon Do, allowing the children to gain confidence in a wide range of activities before progressing to the next stage of their educational journey. Virgo Prep takes pride in being a warm and welcoming school and considers pupils to be its best advertisement. Metamorphic

Jewellery

Inspecting a piece of jewellery for the first time can be very rewarding. There is the fine workmanship to admire, the fire of high quality gemstones and maybe a famous signature or maker’s mark.

S

ometimes there is more. A welldisguised clip, catch or slide reveals that this piece can be disassembled to allow it to be worn in a number of ways. This is known as ‘Metamorphic Jewellery’ – literally, jewellery that changes form and it a fascinating area that showcases the engineering ingenuity of the jewellery as much as the stones and metal that the piece contains. Often the fitted box is a give-away. Nestled in the velvet next to the main jewel sits and oddly shaped pin or a bracket and some screws, all in their own compartment. So the hunt then begins for the cleverly hidden ways in which the main piece might come apart. The concept of multi-functional jewellery

4 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

has been around a long time, and can be as simple as threading a chain through the back of a brooch to wear it as a necklace. The more complex, elaborate pieces became popular in the Victorian era. The newly wealthy mercantile classes did not have the range of family jewels available to the nobility and so metamorphic jewellery allowed them to get more out of the pieces that they had turning a tiara into a necklace and earrings or a necklace into a bracelet and brooch. The Art Deco period saw this trend increased. Stiff formality was on the wane and jewellery became more adaptable and ultimately more wearable. The famous Parisian jewellery houses of Cartier, Chaumet and Van Cleef

& Arpels all created metamorphic suites allowing imposing tiaras or necklaces to break down into smaller components. In 1939 Van Cleef & Arpels patented one of the most flexible and versatile pieces ever – their ‘Passe-Partout’ or ‘go anywhere’, This was a length of gold tubogas with two flower clips and a clever rail system that allowed the jewel to be worn as a bracelet, choker, necklace, sautoir, or belt and the clips as brooches or earrings. In Fellows’ Antique and Modern Jewellery auction on 7th November we have two impressive examples of metamorphic jewellery. Pictured opposite is a diamond necklace with a centrepiece that can be detached and worn as a brooch. We are also offering a pair of earrings that can be worn as either studs, larger florets or as showstopping chandeliers.

Deacon and Zandra Rhodes, and this year’s event promises no less buzz and excitement. It costs over £18m to run Battersea each year, and with no government funding, the Collars & Coats Gala Ball is all about helping increase awareness of the important work the charity does each and every day of the year to offer a second chance in life to thousands of animals. Last year nearly 9,000 dogs and cats needed Battersea’s care and attention to help find them the best possible new homes. Competing at the highest level in sport is, in reality, beyond all but a tiny elite blessed with levels of supreme talent that enables them to contest the world’s most desired trophies and titles. In the same way, the absolute peak of society and the company of the greatest and most good can seem a far off land to hoi polloi...

...except, that is, if you own a racehorse!

R

WRITTEN BY COLIN CAMERON

acing is a world where literally anyone can find themselves holding aloft the ultimate prize, such as past bronze sculptures that have gone to the winning owner of the Investec Epsom Derby. The same person then finds his or herself invited up to the Royal Box where, for many years now, Her Majesty, The Queen will be waiting to congratulate them on succeeding in a pursuit that, to date, Elizabeth II, herself has fallen short in decades of striving for the same status. On the back of this your name is added to a roll of honour that is immortalised in history. In a short leap, from dreams to reality (incidentally and appropriately enough once the name of a racehorse), and fast tracked to the pinnacle of society. So how do you set off on this path? Well, first up, you must buy a racehorse. Indeed, in many respects, if you enjoy some cut and thrust, this is the beginning of what makes ownership such a privilege and thrill.

4 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

For example, at Tattersalls, Europe’s premier auction house of bloodstock that calls Newmarket home, you will find yourself engaged in a world that mirrors that which gathers for the Investec Derby at Epsom or for Royal Ascot. Plus the competition begins here round an historic sales ring. You must bid for what you believe is a champion of the future against others who may share your view and seek to top your best offer. Alternatively, you can narrow the odds in your favour by joining a racing syndicate. If Tattersalls is Europe’s premier auction house, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing is the world’s most successful operation offering shared ownership. If you buy into a Highclere syndicate you become the part owner of blue-blooded prospects with their whole racing lives ahead of them.

ER MAJESTY THE QUEEN H PHOTO CREDIT MATTHEW WEBB

In many ways shared ownership makes huge sense. You team up with the likeminded – 20 or so - and can stretch financially to an even better stock of thoroughbred. With Highclere you

F E AT U R E This is an image of the world record breaking Galileo filly. She sold for 5 million guineas (£5.25 million) to Qatar’s Sheikh Joaan Al Thani at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 2013. This makes her the most expensive yearling filly sold at auction worldwide and also the most expensive horse to ever go through a European sales ring.

also increase the odds of success. Since Harry Herbert founded Highclere now over 20 years ago, the group has earned prize-money of over £6 million and won hundreds of races, as well as finished first or in the frame for all of English racing’s five Classic races. Then there is revenue from selling on Highclere-owned racing stock for careers at stud, trade which has raised over £30 million on outgoings of under £25 million. So you are now ready to dream. After the weeks and months of a high-ranked trainer preparing what is your pride and joy for the racecourse, anticipation levels peak with a racecourse debut. Harbinger, a colt who represented Highclere owners from 2008 for three seasons, first raced in 2009 beginning a spectacular experience of six wins from nine appearances for those syndicate members who owned him. This culminated with success in the King George VI

and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in 2010. The performance earned Harbinger, who costs 180,000 guineas, the rank of best racehorse in the world. Of course, there are no guarantees that ownership ends fairytale-like and happily ever after. You can insure your horses – Amlin is the best in the business for this – but not your hopes and dreams. That said, the pleasures of racehorse ownership do not begin and end with success at the track. At Highclere for example, there is the camaraderie of group ownership, with a sprinkle of stardust – Liz Hurley and Lawrence Dallaglio have taken shares – and the chance to plan for days out at Royal Ascot and other summer season peaks such as Goodwood, as well as spring and autumn highs at the likes of Newmarket. Racehorse ownership; the best of times ahead.

Record Breaking Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 The 2013 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 concluded with a total of 339 lots sold for 70,343,000 guineas, a new record turnover for the sale and 3% higher than last year’s total despite 12% fewer lots being offered. The turnover also represents a record for a European auction. The average for the three days rose 27% to 207,501 guineas whilst the median rose 30% to 130,000 guineas, both new records for the sale. The European record for a yearling was broken on the opening day of Book 1 when the GALILEO brother to Oaks runner-up SECRET GESTURE was sold to John Magnier for 3,600,000 guineas. The sale represented a record for a yearling in Europe, eclipsing the 3,400,000 guineas paid for the subsequent Group 1 winner RIVER DANCER at the Tattersalls Houghton Yearling Sale in 2000. The sale also represented the highest price for a yearling in the World in 2013, with 3.6m guineas equivalent to $6,000,000 and 4,500,000 Euros. The second day of the sale saw the newly set record shattered and a new world record set for the most expensive yearling filly sold at auction when Qatar’s Sheikh Joaan bought the GALILEO sister to the Oaks winner WAS for 5,000,000 guineas. The sale also represents the highest price in European auction history, beating the 4.6m guineas that MAGICAL ROMANCE realised at the 2006 Tattersalls December Mare Sale. The sale price of 5,000,000 guineas is equivalent to $8.4m and Euros 6.2m.

The final day of selling saw a top price of 850,000 guineas paid for the OASIS DREAM colt out of the multiple Group 1 winning mare DAR RE MI from Lord & Lady Lloyd-Webber’s Watership Down Stud bought by agent Charlie Gordon-Watson. O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3 4 7

HARRODS PARTICIPATED IN THE FIRST EVER LONDON TO BRIGHTON VCR IN 1896.

Harrods Takes A Trip Down Memory Lane Exciting new partnership with luxury department store harks back to the inaugural London to Brighton Run in 1896

T

he organisers of the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run are delighted to announce an exciting new partnership with Harrods. The world’s most famous luxury department store not only will become an Official Partner to this year’s running of the world’s longest running and greatest motoring celebration on Sunday 3rd November, but also will supply the participants aboard more than 400 veteran cars with some well-deserved refreshments at the event’s official midway check-point in Crawley, Sussex. With the extraordinary cavalcade of pre1905 vehicles facing several slow and challenging hill climbs as the historic route ascends the South Downs, the provision of tea, coffee and pastries will be extremely welcome at the new ‘Harrods Stop at Crawley’. The partnership has added significance as among the 33 ‘horseless carriages’ setting off from central London towards Brighton on the original Emancipation Run on 14 November 1896 was one of the very

first Harrods delivery vans (photo above). Sadly the history books don’t tell the name of the two heavily moustachioed drivers but the vehicle was a Panhard-Levassor. Adding further interest, Michael Ward, Managing Director of Harrods, will be participating in this year’s Veteran Car Run driving an electrically powered Waverley dating back to 1901. “I am truly excited to be involved in this year’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Dating back to the early 1900s, our vintage vehicles form part of Harrods’ rich heritage and I, being a personal car enthusiast, will take great pride in driving our most prized car from the collection in this iconic motoring event,” said Ward. “We are also delighted to be bringing a taste of our Knightsbridge store to Crawley where we will officially host a pop-up café at the halfway stop for participants and spectators to enjoy on the day.” www.harrods.com

Royal Automobile Club’s Annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run SUNDAY 3rd NOVEMBER 2013 The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is a remarkable homage to the dawn of driving that boasts huge appeal, attracting entrants from around the globe, all eager to participate in what is the world’s longest running and greatest motoring celebration.

T

he annual November event attracts entrants from all over the globe and for the owners of these highly valuable veteran cars it represents a rare opportunity to take their extraordinary automobiles on the historic 60-mile run from Hyde Park in central London to the seafront on the Sussex resort of Brighton. Few events in today’s international calendar like the Veteran Car Run can claim such individuality, personality and character as around 500 fine examples of eligible pre 1905 manufacture demonstrate their early engineering ability. The Royal Automobile Club’s annual Veteran Car Run commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14th November 1896 which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act, which raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 mph to 14 mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded

5 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

by a man on foot. The early law required the man on foot to carry a red flag but that requirement was actually abolished in 1878. However, the Locomotive Act was still widely known as the ‘Red Flag Act’ and a red flag was symbolically destroyed at the start of the Emancipation Run, by Lord Winchilsea as it is today just before the start in Hyde Park of each November’s celebration Run by members of The Royal Automobile Club. From 1930 to the present day the Run has been owned and professionally organised by the Royal Automobile Club of Pall Mall London. In 1936 the Club moved the start of the Run to Hyde Park which has hosted the ceremonial early November Sunday morning assembly ever since and for 2013 celebrates the 77th Anniversary of the start from this Royal Parks venue.

EV E N TS

Not a race but an endurance of man and machine the annual event today attracts over 500 automobiles with an eligibility criteria that requires the cars to be of three or four wheel design and certified that their build took place prior to 1st January 1905. 117 years later the Veteran Car Run attracts over 550 entry applications with over 25% represented by eligible vehicles shipped to the UK especially for the Run from across Europe, North and South America, Asia and the Australias making the annual Run a truly International event. Over 160 vehicle makes take part and individual values range from around £25,000 to several million! Many famous celebrities including members of the Royal Family have been seen on the Run and for many years the 60 mile route has been lined with hundreds of thousands of spectators standing in the early winter Sunday mornings to cheer the drivers of this wonderful spectacle of early motoring. Nick Mason, however, is one famous face who has become a Veteran Car Run regular. Indeed, the Pink Floyd drummer and renowned car enthusiast is such a strong devotee that he acquired his very own pre-1905 veteran car specifically to partake in the amazing showcase that features up to than 500 vehicles from the motoring’s very earliest days. “It sounds bizarre getting up at the crack of dawn on what’s usually a really rather cold November morning but it’s great to run these old cars,” explains Mason who drives a 5-litre 1901 Panhard. “It’s a real thrill to get these old machines working and to get them down to Brighton.” Mason has a pretty good record of completing the course, too. “I think we’ve now finished 17 out of 20 times,” he continues. “We actually had a couple of failures earlier on mainly due to punctures and a faulty wheel but once we sorted that the car has been pretty reliable, touch wood. “It’s actually a very good ‘old’ car with some very advanced things for the period such as a steering wheel rather than a tiller! It’s also got a big engine and is terrific in terms of power considering its age. It was almost certainly originally built as a race car. Consequently, when other people are

struggling up the hills, on a good day we can have five passengers aboard and just go for it.” Like so many others recreating history on the road to Brighton each November, the musician delights in being part of such a special celebration but admits seeing the English Channel is the biggest highlight of the day. “It’s always fabulous fun just to participate, but it’s always the arrival into Brighton and the feeling of achievement to get the car there which is the biggest thrill.” In December 2010 the Royal Automobile Club won a prestigious Federation Internationale de L’Automobile (FIA) Award for its dedicated promotion of the annual Veteran Car Run and its related protection of early motoring vehicles. To owners of veteran cars worldwide the annual November run to Brighton represents the high point of the year’s early motoring car events and a rare opportunity to take their extraordinary vehicles to a wider audience. Spectating throughout the Sunday Run from Hyde Park London to Madeira Drive Brighton and during the Saturday Regent Street Motor Show, London is completely FREE! Many enthusiasts gather at various locations along the 60 mile route to support the drivers and passengers of these wonderful nostalgic vehicles. n historic 1902 Panhard Levassor 16HP four cylinder rearentrance Tonneau with coach work by Labourdette of Paris estimated to sell for £550,000 to £650,000, at Bonhams annual London to Brighton Run veteran motorcar sale on 1ST November, comes with a gilt edged motoring provenance. Motoring experts believe that this car may be the one that the founder of the Rolls-Royce marque based his own earliest cars. The car was owned by Lord Llangattock of Hendre in Monmouthshire, the father of C.S. Rolls, who founded what is arguably the greatest car marque in the world – Rolls-Royce. Chances are that C.S. Rolls would have learned some of his love of motor cars as a passenger in this Panhard owned by his father. The car has been in the same family since 1935 and comes fresh to the market after almost 80 years. Malcolm Barber, Bonhams Group CEO, who sourced this car, says: “Once in a while you find a car that really excites you, even after a lifetime of finding and selling automotive gems. This car has it all, history, looks, provenance. I have driven alongside it many times while on the London to Brighton Run. It still wears its C.S. Rolls brass supplier plates and has an entry for this years Run which takes place two days after our sale. Whoever buys it automatically becomes part of motoring history.” This sturdy four cylinder Brighton car with a body by the eminent French coachbuilder was an expensive motorcar in its day. There is a belief by many motoring pundits that C. S. Rolls based his early thoughts for his own marque on this machine. As the car dates back to 1902 it means that it merits a relatively early start on the London to Brighton Run.
It has taken part in every Run since 1958 5 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

Today, Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals, through two major salerooms in London: New Bond Street and Knightsbridge; and a further three in the UK regions and Scotland. ondon Fashion Week (LFW) is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. LFW puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m;

the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven’t got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. 62 catwalk shows and 20 presentations took place across the 5 days. The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists’ cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is OOCCTTOOBBEERR 22 00 11 33 6 11 7

exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe, with international press attending from 42 countries. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our Winter wardrobes, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/Summer Collections during last month’s London Fashion Week. London Fashion Week was a roaring success. This season saw big-name guests like Anna Wintour, Kate Moss and Harry Styles dominate the front rows. Top designers – including Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood and Manolo Blahnik – showcased their designs and newer names, including Fashion East’s rising stars Ashley Williams, Claire Barrow and Ryan Lo made their mark with punchy, memorable shows. London Fashion Week is a dazzling showcase of great British talent,” said Mayor of London Boris Johnson. “Its significance has been growing over the last few years, with strong attendance by press and buyers from around the world. With Natalie Massenet now at the helm, her eye for fashion and innovative ideas about selling will ensure it goes from strength to strength and inspire future 12 8 O C TOBE R R 2 20 01 13 3 6

generations to seek out jobs in this vibrant and creative sector. As well as investing in London Fashion Week, I will continue to do all I can to support the industry, which is so important to our city’s prosperity.’’ You’d have been forgiven for thinking you’d stepped into the Autumn/Winter shows as London Fashion Week took over the capital once more; dark palettes, heavy-duty fabrics, longer cuts and geometric prints for spring and summer replaced the usual suspects of saccharine brights, ethereal materials, barelythere lengths and all-out florals. Though some requisite summer touches - think lace, think florals, think sunny hues - did break through, the spring/summer catwalks held onto a decidedly, well, wintery feel. A subversive undercurrent ran through collections at Tom Ford, Simone Rocha and Giles with rips, zips and moody concoctions of black, grey and browns. Even the king of summer, Christopher Kane, turned the dial on his collection, offering florals with a sociopolitical undertone (diagrams on flowers were used to highlight the inadequacies of sex education). And the anarchical theme continued as traditionally autumnal boxy tops, sheeny metallics, brocade and leather made unapologetic appearances . Though prints were out in force, 2013’s flowers and heady neon splices made way for geometric touches, spots, lines and checks. But it wasn’t all dark and stormy; a hint

S HUI O FFA E AT RN E

of summer came in the form of gorgeous cheeriness at Roksanda Ilincic and Tata Naka: a palette of sunny brights alongside playful patterns provided a welcome respite from the autumnal feel of the shows. Yellow, a key colour for the season, also warmed up the L’Wren Scott and Thomas Tait collections. BORA AKSU London Fashion Week opened with brilliant brights from Bora Aksu to bring some colour to a dreary London day. There were dolllike dresses, made from a patchwork of fabrics and patterns in yellow and blue. The high collars and cinched-in waists adding to the dainty vibe of the collection.Blue paisley patterns were dotted throughout, on playsuits, edging white blazers and decorating the hem-lines of circle skirts, and lace and sheer materials were the fabric of choice. A colourful start to LFW!

THE COLLECTION ENGLISH ROSE Fabrics: English lace, macramé lace, lofty Scottish cashmere, soft sculptural cashmere, rubber, cotton, raw silk, felted Merino wool, soft suede. Colours: Rose pink, lavender. dusky mauve, mint, trench, white, crystal, pale yellow, sage green, berry red, grape, grey mélange, black Silhouettes: Cardigan outerwear, wrap coats, soft Chesterfields, knotdresses, pencil skirts, lofty knits. Accessories: The Petal bag; petal-shaped sunglasses, gem belts, rubber flower belts, iPhone cases, rubber strap shoe, The Britain – Gem Edition Burberry, which is headquartered in London, was founded in 1856. MOSCHINI Moschino’s bringing back punk, with graffitistyle graphics and animal print ruling their

runway. Rosella Jardini, the creative director for Moschino, brought new meaning to the word punk. Her use of texture and graphics created a neo-punk trend that’s here to stay. She a fi wlessly combined glamour and risk with wearability, without ever losing the edge that makes Moschino such a fashion forward brand. The models were laden with either black lipstick or just enough black eye shadow to make you believe that they actually listen to the Sex Pistols and secretly identify with an alternative punk subculture. Alas, Jardini’s touch of refinement and femininity managed to maintain an ambience of high fashion and elegance that is ever present throughout London Fashion Week. JASPER CONRAN For their Spring/Summer 2014 Collection, Jasper Conran bring a starched collar which embodies the clean-lined approach. Pure white and navy injected with solid statements of lemon, streamlined – in form, colour and pattern. Trompe l’oeil beadwork over sheer layers, mixed with fine guage striped silk knits, hand-blocked prints and full skirts. A softening of attitude. Dahlia lace, applique blooms and wirework leaves in textural white, dressed-up for day in cotton pique and pristine linen Fondant coloured prints on the lightest organza –simply pretty! Holiday tones of pink grapefruit, sunny yellow, grass green and sea blue. Cotton dressing – the bandeau, a tailored short, a simple sundress. Bold graphic prints always set against cooling white. Abstract architectural details decorate flowing georgette, in full length layered columns. TEMPERLEY LONDON Perhaps the polar opposite to Moschino’s show, Temperley London was all about the romance. With beautiful fabrics, o fi ral embellishment and decorative pieces, Alice Temperley served up a dish of British elegance at its n fi est, with a fi ttering silhouettes and a delicateness that’s not often seen at runway shows anymore. Although Temperley’s collection brought London back to the classic elegance associated with the city. Playing with texture and print, the collection took o fi ral that may have otherwise been mistaken as your grandmother’s curtains and transformed it into a collection perfectly tfi for an English tea party.

PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND Pringle of Scotland is the iconic brand founded in 1815 at the birthplace of the Scottish knitwear industry. Their spring/ summer 2014 womenswear collection embraces contrasting influences to create unexpected juxtapositions; graphic panels are offset with elliptical seams, structural couture fabrics are paired with relaxed knitted elements, and sharp silhouettes are gathered to create volume. The brand’s iconic argyle diamonds are used as a thematic thread that evolves throughout the collection, rooting the designs in the brand’s heritage but offering fresh treatments and techniques to transformative effect. Intarsia twinsets feature diamonds entwined together to resemble the mesh of fencing, whilst woven jacquards in porcelain blue and white present diamonds with varying placements and scales and knitted jacquards showcase fragmented argyles that are overlaid with hand beading for textural detail. this tactile interpretation is further developed through a raised argyle knitted sleeveless sweater with hand knit trim. the geometric grid patterns intrinsic to argyle are then realised through a fine lace stitch knit, which is then replicated through macramé that ranges in scale from delicate panels on skirts and bomber jackets, to a more structured oversized macramé

t-shirt and skirt. the open weave of macramé provides inspiration for an open slash stitch knit dress in electric blue worn as a twinset with matching cardigan, and a knitted silk dress combines macramé and pointelle across exaggerated fully fashioned seams. a game of opposites is explored through the combination of textures used on one garment; couture silk sits with knitted jersey and macramé on a bomber jacket and skirt. this opposition can also be seen in the use of exaggerated contrast colours and trims; an off white leather vest with knitted back is enlivened with bright geranium leather sides, and an electric blue/ navy bomber features contrasting white leather piping. the use of these contradictory colours and materials makes for a collection that is both tough and feminine, pairing the ease and flow of knitwear with the structure and formality of couture fabrics. BURBERRY PRORSUM Burberry Prorsum showed its womenswear Spring/Summer 2014 collection, ‘English Rose’, in London’s Hyde Park. Guests included Sienna Miller, Harry Styles, Paloma Faith, Alexa Chung, Poppy Delevingne and Donna Air. The show was also a celebration of Burberry Beauty, as the first womenswear show since the brand brought the category in house. The Spring/Summer 2014 makeup look and next season’s Burberry Nails collection were unveiled: six nail colours, launching in January 2014.

PAUL SMITH The Paul Smith collection was mainly based on roomy, semi-seventies shapes with the brand’s signature men’s tailoring. Easygoing colours like cornflower blue, black, white and buttercup sent a message of ‘chillout -and-have fun’. A particular favourite was an easy-to-style button-down peach dress in lightweight fabric with sensual drapes – it was a dress that stood out all on its own, no accessories needed. MULBERRY Emma Hill certainly pulled out all the stops for her final show as creative director of Mulberry in the Spring 2014 collection shown at London

Fashion Week. The collection varied in prints, textures, shapes and colour, and was beautiful through and through. From sixties inspired prints to sporty silhouettes and all-white ensembles there was nothing that wasn’t executed perfectly. We also saw bold prints on minimalist shapes, a hint of sheer coming through on a broad stripe and leather worn on leather. The show was also the debut of the new Mulberry handbag, the Kensal. With all this in mind, the Mulberry show was everything a girl could wish for in a final farewell. ASHISH Sequins galore! What else would you expect from an Ashish show? They were everywhere,

from jeans to bags. As well as sequins, we saw the Coca Cola logo cropping up over and over again, on tees trown over ripped sequin trousers, for a totally glam-grunge look that seemed thrown together in the coolest of ways. We loved the rainbow sequined trousers and the zebra and leopard print dress, and the best thing about the show was the DIY feel to all of it. Pass the sequins please! MATTHEW WILLIAMSON Matthew Williamson’s show teetered between business and boho, there was sharp tailoring which contrasted with billowing floral maxi dresses. The style was distinctly grown up, and the prints were hand-painted rather than computer generated, and we love the orange and pink floral jumpsuit! The day-wear was sharp and chic, with tailored trousers and midi-length floral dresses going strong, and the evening dresses took us back to classic Matthew Williamson style, chiffon gowns in floral and dragonfly prints. HOUSE OF HOLLAND House of Holland is a show everyone looks forward to – and it didn’t disappoint! Girly dresses were toughened up with caps and huge sunnies for a dash of London edge. Print-wise, gingham prevailed, in contrasting blues and reds, they stole the show and made a bold, bright statement – what more would you expect from Henry? The feminine dresses were mixed up with amazing printed trousers and graphic tees for a more casual look – they’re already on our wishlist for next season! CHRISTOPHER KANE Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking’… Despite Miranda Priestly’s quip in The Devil Wear’s Prada, to the gifted mind of Christopher Kane there are in fact ways to make spring florals groundbreaking. Kane took various

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD RED LABEL Vivienne Westwood always puts on a show at London Fashion Week. Her S/S14 collection opened with Lily Cole, dressed in a floorlength gown and wildhaired, performing a dance based on the fairy tale “The Red Shoes”. After the performance, came the clothes, and Westwood showed us her trademark draped tailoring, on structured coats and jackets – Spring still calls for outwear with London weather! The artistic, floral print, smudged on dresses and jumpsuits that

were tied at the knees with scarves, and the paint-like elements seeped into the beauty look - each model walked out with white make up painted over their faces and legs – described by Vivienne as “like an animal trapped in the headlights”. JOHN ROCHA For Spring Summer 2014 John Rocha weaves a narrative of grace and femininity, a tale of contemporary elegance and hard-edged romance. The palette, grounded in broken whites and ivories and all the textures of black, brings surprises with shots of scarlet and fuchsia and blossoms of lemon, violet, emerald and indigo. The silhouette moves through beautifully structured volumes that are at once pure and sharply sweet, to slim extended lines that skim the form and a linear silhouette that drapes to suggest a darker sophistication. Throughout the collection John’s abiding love of texture and

embellishment is focused in densely worked surfaces, each piece creating an individual expression. Silk organza is scattered with couched georgette and yarn blossoms, or hand sculpted petals and blooms. Sheer georgette is satin stitched in trellises that trace the form, or flounced in raw edged layers and countered with glazed and lacquered laces. Extraordinary forms are intricately crafted from twists and loops of organza piping. Yet, there is a seeming weightlessness throughout, a lightness that informs the collection. As always with John’s work there is a duality, a counterbalance between the tender and the strong the tough and the romantic. We can now look forward to the trends that will be hitting the high streets for Spring/ Summer 2014, and re-create the look on the catwalk! London Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including Canon Europe current headline sponsor for seven consecutive seasons). London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. www.londonfashionweek.co.uk

parts of the female flower’s anatomy and translated them into innovative details on contemporary shapes. A modernised and streamlined petal-shaped motif was repeatedly used on everything from sweatshirts to cocktail dresses. Trendwise the collection featured pastels and pleating, sheer and holographic elements. The application of details set it apart from other offerings at London Fashion Week, for instance the three holographic looks were made up of multi-coloured fabrics which frayed slightly at the edges reinforcing their natural fibre and injecting a bit of science into the collection. There was some schoolboy angst too, with floral textbook diagrams used as a print in various sizes and on various items.

PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND OPENS NEW FLAGSHIP STORE Pringle of Scotland have opened their prestigious London store on Mount Street, Mayfair, designed by Swiss architects Atelier Oï.

T

he Flagship store showcases the Men’s and Women’s Autumn/ Winter 2013 Collections, and launches the brand’s latest Archive Collection ‘Princess Grace: More Than An Image’. The historic red brick building on one of London’s most prestigious streets, perfectly complements Pringle of Scotland’s own rich heritage, whilst the architects were appointed to create an interior that reflects the innovative and contemporary spirit of the brand. The store offers 1,000 square feet of retail space incorporating a Cashmere Bar and VIP Room, as well as additional footage dedicated to hosting the brand’s wholesale Show Room. Swiss architects Atelier Oï created a design that draws on their shared values with the Pringle of Scotland brand; a great appreciation of traditional craftsmanship, a tactile relationship with raw materials and a hunger for technical innovation.

6 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

The inspiration taken from the brand’s Scottish heritage is evident in the use of materials; wood and stone are prevalent and reflect the distinctive landscapes of forest and woodland and dramatic rock formations that define the Scottish scenery where the brand was born. Pringle of Scotland’s iconic argyle pattern is also a reference point, but abstracted through the use of sharp angles and dissecting lines wrought in gun metal structures that feature across shelving units and fittings. Aurel Aebi, founding partner, comments on their relationship with Pringle “Atelier Oï and Pringle of Scotland are both passionate about the sensuality of nature and the essence of materials.” and this emphasis on the organic is evident throughout the store design. Jack & Frank Together Again Jack Daniel’s Launches Special Edition Frank Sinatra Whiskey ®

The true and timeless relationship between Frank Sinatra and Jack Daniel’s has received a satisfying salute with the launch of Sinatra Select. Destined to be remembered as one of the finest releases by Jack Daniel’s, this special edition Tennessee Whiskey celebrates a legendary friendship that lasted more than half a century.

W

ith a bold oak flavour, rich amber colour and exceptionally smooth vanilla finish, Sinatra Select is crafted from special ‘Sinatra barrels’ – each hand selected by Master Distiller Jeff Arnett – and bottled at 90 proof. The ultra-premium whiskey’s especially full character and dark rich amber colour is achieved by exposing the classic Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey to extra layers of toasted wood on the inner surface of the barrels. This results in a smooth, but bold whiskey, which embodies the smooth, bold character of Frank Sinatra and his impeccable taste. The classic, black Sinatra Select bottle depicts flashes of orange, said to be Frank Sinatra’s favourite colour as he thought it was the ‘happiest’. Packaged within a sleek, limited edition box, Frank Sinatra’s signature and iconic fedora hat is found on the bottle, along with the Jack Daniel’s Country Club logo, designed by ‘Ol Blue Eyes himself. Also enclosed is a booklet telling the captivating story of the legendary Jack Daniel’s and Frank Sinatra relationship Sinatra Select honours Frank Sinatra’s loyalty - a lifetime fan of Jack Daniel’s. Look onstage any given night and you would see Frank Sinatra, in his trademark tuxedo, captivating audiences everywhere. Look a little closer and his favourite drink, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, wouldn’t be far away. The legend was buried with a pack of Camel cigarettes, a dime and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s. Frank Sinatra also developed his own Jack Daniel’s country club, even designing the blazer logo himself – the Daily Mirror on May 31st, 1962 reported Frank flying into the UK early for his tour saying no one recognised him as he strolled around the West End: ‘Perhaps it was his clothes. No “Pal Joey” hat. No snappy suit. Just flannels and blazer. And on the blazer, a badge bearing the letters J.D…The J.D stands for Jack Daniels, an American distiller.” (Jack Daniel’s was small back in the 60s!) JD was his favourite drink. The Daily Express on Wednesday June 13th, 1962 reported that Sinatra in a London side-street studio “waved a bottle of his favourite Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Sour Mash Sipping Whisky – two bottles supplied by the record company at £3 8s each.” Commenting on Sinatra

Select, Frank Sinatra Jnr. says “Dad would be very flattered by the association. This fine Tennessee Whiskey, or Old No. 7 as he referred to it, was a favourite part of my father’s life and he loved both sharing it with his friends and introducing it to new acquaintances. I’m very pleased to continue to be a part of the Jack Daniel’s family and feel the introduction of Sinatra Select is an appropriate tribute as we near my father’s 100th birthday in 2015”. Independent in character, with an appealing smoothness, it is no surprise Frank Sinatra found a friend in Jack - a relationship that Jack Daniel’s now extends to whiskey lovers worldwide. Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select is available in The Whisky Exchange (www.thewhiskyexchange.com), Selfridges and The Whisky Shop from early November with an RRP of £150. Fine Wine Investment

Peter Shakeshaft, chairman of Vin-X, on the growth of fine wine investment

O

ver the last five years, investment in fine wine has enjoyed enormous growth as more and more people recognise its potential as a genuine alternative asset class. While investors are increasingly diversifying from traditional, and recently volatile, investment classes, the global fine wine investment market is now valued at US$4 billion. This is thanks to the significant returns that are available to investors. Indeed, fine wine investment has outperformed almost every major financial index in the last three decades, delivering on average annual double-digit growth. It’s fair to say that for many years fine wine was considered an emotional collectable. Now, it’s seen as a credible alternative investment and its place in the market will only get stronger as people become more engaged and gain the confidence that they can buy and exit profitably from their investments. The market is focused around the top 25 Bordeaux Chateaux, which are regarded as producing the finest and most promising wines in the world. In today’s market, the predominance of value sits with the five First Growths (situated on the Left Bank of the River Gironde). Nothing compares to the wines of Bordeaux, the brands and the quality.

7 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

Potential investors should strongly consider these wines to make up the bulk of their portfolios, while the super Seconds and premier Right Bank wines, which generate a significant proportion of the secondary market trading in fine wine, should also be considered. In the past the industry’s reputation has suffered at times due to a small minority of unscrupulous practitioners, which is why we’re members of the self-regulatory body, the Wine Investment Association (WIA). The WIA is seeking to address this, by uncovering fraudulent companies and setting the standard for best practice in the industry. Investors should look for the WIA kitemark as a sign that they are investing with a reputable firm.

Jessica Parker, General Manager of Virgin Wines Fabulous tells us “As an online company we wanted to find a way to bring Virgin Wines into people’s living rooms. Engaging with customers at home tastings and spreading our passion for wine first hand through our team of Fabulous Advisors seemed a perfect solution. It means anyone can enjoy a personal wine tasting in the comfort of their own home, have the opportunity to try a selection of wines before they buy, whilst

having a fun sociable evening with their friends. What better way to spend an evening and with Christmas just around the corner, it’s the perfect way to stock up!” Fancy being a Fabulous Advisor? Why not start your own Business? Hosting a home tasting is not the only way to get involved with Virgin Wines Fabulous. The company is also looking for dynamic, motivated people to become Fabulous Advisors and introduce Fabulous tastings to new areas. With shows such as ‘The Apprentice’ and ‘Dragons’ Den’ consistently topping the TV ratings, becoming your own boss and building your own business is more in vogue than ever before. As Jessica explains, “Many people want the excitement and financial freedom of starting their own business, particularly if it’s a product they love. But in reality, it isn’t an easy task. By becoming a Fabulous Advisor, budding entrepreneurs have complete control over their work lives whilst enjoying the support of a well-established company and a global, iconic brand such as Virgin. Some Fabulous Advisors just do a tasting a week, others want to turn this into a full-time career, so it is completely flexible allowing you to work when it suits you and around your lifestyle.” To find out more about booking a tasting or becoming an advisor, contact Jessica at register@virginwinesfabulous.co.uk, or head to www.virginwinesfabulous.co.uk.

in 8 of us will be diagnosed with breast cancer during our lifetime – so this October Breast Cancer Care wants people across the UK to show their support by organising a fun Pink Friday event at work or home. Breast Cancer Care is encouraging people nationwide to take part in its Pink Friday fundraising campaign by wearing pink, eating pink or partying pink on a Friday! All the money raised will go towards supporting women and men affected by breast cancer. Having a Pink Friday is easy to do and can include anything from wearing pink at work while enjoying pink food and drinks, to a pink pamper party with your mates at home, or getting your class to wear pink to school. Breast Cancer Care Ambassador Denise Van Outen said: “I have been a supporter of Breast Cancer Care since I lost my beloved nan to breast cancer eight years ago. They were a

great help to my family during a very difficult time and the work they do is absolutely amazing. That’s why I am thrilled to be supporting Breast Cancer Care’s Pink Fridays campaign this October. Come on girls, get those pink glad rags on, bake some pink cupcakes and let’s do our bit to support the 55,000 people affected by breast cancer every year in the UK.” Register now for a free Pink Fridays fundraising kit, full of party ideas and fundraising tips. I THINK I’VE FOUND A LUMP IN MY BREAST...

WHAT DO I DO? It is completely understandable that you might worry about the possibility of breast cancer if you find a lump, but remember; most lumps are not cancer. The most likely cause for a lump depends on your age.

Women from 20s to 30s In women from 20 to 30 a definite lump is most likely to be a fibroadenoma. These are benign lumps that can sometimes be painful or enlarge but they are not cancerous and do not turn cancerous.

Women between 40s and 50s Between 40 and 50 breast cysts becom more common. These are also entirely benign. They are collections of fluid within the breast and although they can also be painful they are not dangerous.

Women aged 30 and onwards From the age of 30 onwards the gland tissue in the breast changes and it becomes more fibrous and nodular. The way the breast feels has been described as like a scaled down packet of frozen peas and occasionally, in just the same way that frozen peas can stick together to form a clump, so breast tissue can “stick together” to form definite nodular areas. These areas are also often tender but, once again, are not a sign of cancer. 7 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

The rate of breast cancer begins to rise after the age of 40 and increases with age. Of course, breast cancer can occur at any age and I have seen cases in women as young as 19 and in their early 20s, but they are very, very rare. The important message is, if you notice a change in your breast please get it checked. Let’s go through what you need to do. The first thing to do is to see your GP and explain what you have noticed. They will examine you and in some cases may suggest a further check at a different time of your menstrual cycle. Some of the nodular areas can change with the cycle and this is actually a reassuring sign. If a discrete nodular area persists or your GP finds a definite lump, or is unsure, they will refer you to a breast clinic for a full assessment by the breast team. The team should consist of several consultants working together, and includes a surgeon a radiologist and a pathologist. The investigation of any breast problem revolves around, what is

B R E A S T CA N C E R AWA R E N E S S M O N T H

called, the triple assessment. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle; pieces (of information) are collected and put together until the whole picture (the diagnosis) becomes clear. Indeed, this is often termed “the diagnostic jigsaw”. In some cases only 2 pieces may be needed, in others 4, but 3 (the triple assessment) is most common. Let’s have a look at what the pieces are. The first specialist you meet will often be the breast surgeon. They will ask questions about your symptoms (called taking your “history”). They will also ask about previous medical problems and your family history. They will then examine both breasts. How the breast feels when it is examined is the first part of the jigsaw. If there is a definite area of change then a fine needle aspiration may be carried out. This test uses a normal sized syringe and needle. The needle is placed into the area of the breast and “jiggled” so that a small amount of material is sucked into the syringe. This is sent away to be looked at under the microscope. More commonly now a test known as a core biopsy is done. A core biopsy takes a core of breast tissue about 1.5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter. The core biopsy is carried out by first putting some local anaesthetic into the skin of the breast. Once this has worked (it is quite quick) a small nick is made in the skin to allow the core biopsy needle, attached to the biopsy “gun”, to be placed into the breast. When the “gun” is “fired” (it is painless, but does make a noise rather like a large stapler) the needle takes the sample. This is often repeated a few times. The appearance of the cells that have been removed with a fine needle aspiration, or the result of the core biopsy, is the second part of the jigsaw. The final part of the triple assessment involves taking images of the breast. In ladies under 35 an ultrasound scan is the commonest way of doing this. In ladies over 35 they will have a mammogram as well. Full field digital mammograms are the most sensitive type available at the moment. What an area of the breast looks like on a mammogram or an

ultrasound scan is the third piece of the jigsaw. If the triple assessment produces the same answer at each stage the result is said to be concordant and no further tests may be needed. For example, a lump in a 30 year old lady may feel like a fibroadenoma, look like one on an ultrasound scan and a core biopsy shows pieces of a fibroadenoma. What if the pieces don’t quite fit and the picture (diagnosis) is not initially obvious (the triple assessment is then said to be discordant)? For example, in a 50 year old lady a lump may feel like a benign nodular area but look odd on an ultrasound with a normal mammogram. In this case another piece of the jigsaw may be needed, such as an MRI scan or even, occasionally an operation to remove an area for full examination under the microscope. An important part of the triple assessment that is not commonly mentioned is to watch how things change (or not) with time. It would not be unusual to check things a few months later, repeating some, or all, of the assessment to make sure nothing has changed. A thorough triple assessment may actually be a quadruple assessment! Once again it should be emphasised that in the majority of cases a triple assessment (or a quadruple one) will reveal that cancer is not present. Most symptoms are age related changes or benign lumps. However, it is important that any new change is thoroughly investigated by a specialist to make absolutely sure that all is well.

GET THE BODY WITHOUT THE WORKOUT!

S

o, you work out regularly. You lead a healthy lifestyle. You watch your weight. And yet the perfect six pack still somehow eludes you. Alas, for really chiselled abs and a toned, athletic body to die for, total dedication to the gym is needed. Great if you’re Brad Pitt and you’re being paid to spend hours there, not so great for everyone else. Now however, there’s a real alternative. Vaser Hi-Def is the new approach to body sculpting that everyone is talking about. It delivers instant results with no general anaesthetic or stitches, and you can be back at your desk within a week, looking and feeling great. Vaser Hi-Def is much less invasive than conventional liposuction, so there is reduced bruising and the scars are almost invisible and fade quickly. It also means that the recovery period is shorter so you can carry on with your everyday life much sooner and even be back in the gym within two to three weeks. What is more, the procedure leaves skin tightened, so there are no worries about being left with saggy skin. Ultrasound Technology This is the ultimate in Vaser treatments and our specialists at Riverbanks Clinic are among the select few in the UK to have the advanced qualification required to perform Vaser Hi-Def, and were personally trained by the inventor of the technique Dr Alfredo Hoyos from Colombia. Vaser Hi-Def uses ultrasound to emulsify the fat under the skin. The sound energy can be used extremely selectively, removing even the fat closest to 8 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

the muscle and skin – this is the stubborn fat that is most difficult to shift through exercise alone. It enables accurate body sculpting which follows the muscle definition, producing either a ‘ripped’ look or a more subtle toned physique, as required. The procedure itself is straightforward. Firstly a local anaesthetic is given, then a tiny incision is made and the Vaser probe inserted to treat the fat. Finally, the dissolved fat is aspirated using gentle suction techniques. Afterwards, a dressing must be worn for 48 hours and a compression garment for a few weeks. This ensures that the skin doesn’t experience any ‘drag’ during the healing process. A week off work is recommended so that the body can recover thoroughly from the surgery. Not just for six packs! Vaser Hi-Def can be used on any part of the body where stubborn fat persists. It can sculpt away a spare tyre, love handles or even the dreaded ‘man boobs’, creating a perfectly honed, athletic physique. It is not an alternative to weight loss or healthy living - it is designed for people who are in good health and take care of themselves, but have areas of persistent fat they’d like to banish for good. In this month’s article Healthy Balance Integrated Medicine practitioners share their advice on your health issues.

This issue, Tanya Wright, Steven Fullagar and Dr. Kate Barnes contribute. My three year old son keeps getting awful outbreaks of eczema all over his body. The dermatologist has prescribed him hydrocortisone and Diprobase and these do work for a week or two, but the outbreaks come back again. A friend suggested that it could be related to something he eats. Is this true? Childhood eczema can feel hot and itchy and can be caused by many different factors. It can get worse in hot
or cold weather, when a child is unwell,
or may have an environmental trigger including dust, pet fur, woolen clothing or perfumes. Diet can be another important factor... If you are going to exclude foods from the diet, this should be done in a structured way and preferably with the help of a dietitian. Your GP can refer you to an NHS dietitian. Try and keep a food and eczema diary to help identify if the eczema might be triggered by a food (or foods). If food is making eczema worse and foods are excluded from the diet it may become unbalanced; this is why replacement foods should be used and recipes for family foods adapted; it is easier than you think to do this especially with the right help and supervision. Tanya is on the committee of several organisations including the Board of Trustees and Scientific Committee for Allergy UK and the Anaphylaxis Campaign.

I’ve had an MRI confirming that I have a slipped disc in my back. Is it safe to have osteopathic treatment for my back pain. Slipped disc’ is a colloquial term for a prolapsed or herniating intervertebral disc. Discs are the cushioning between
the 24 moving vertebrae (bones) in the spine. Damage happens when the soft squidgy centre of the disc pushes through a weakened portion of its own outside fibrous layer and this can lead to nerves being compressed. This can be very serious and in certain circumstances can lead to a condition called Cauda Equina which requires immediate surgery. Pain from a prolapsed disc can be debilitating and your body will try to compensate to avoid it. Whilst joints do need to move to get better, this altered movement can result in additional problems. It is commonly understood that keeping active is better than bed rest for this condition however, it is important that this condition is managed properly. An osteopath can go through with you in detail which movements and activities you must avoid to stop the problem getting any worse and they would aim to maximise the mobility of the rest of the spine in order to minimise the forces occurring at the damaged level. Steven Fullagar is an osteopath with special interest in sports medicine and is on the committee of OSCA UK

I recently went for a Health Check and was found to have high blood pressure. I was advised to make an appointment to see my GP for some medication. I am concerned as I don’t like taking drugs and I feel fit and well although I know I could do with losing some weight. What would you suggest I do? I can understand your reluctance to take medication especially when you feel well but I would strongly recommend a visit to your GP. If you are found to have persistently high blood pressure you run a high risk of a stroke and may also risk other health problems such as a heart attack. Ask your GP to check your blood pressure over 24 hours with a monitor that you can wear at home which then produces a print out. With these results to hand your GP will be able to advise you on whether you need to take medication or not. That said there are plenty of important ways in which you can lower your blood pressure yourself . Losing weight will definitely help and in some cases this may be enough to avoid needing medication. Reducing salt in your diet, cutting down on alcohol and learning to deal with stress will all result in a significant reduction in blood pressure. This is your golden opportunity to address this ‘wakeup call’ -take up some physical exercise, learn and give yourself time for relaxation, and relieve yourself of chronic everyday stress. Dr. Kate Barnes is a GP of 20 years experience with a special interest in mind-body medicine.

It’s not what you know, but who you know that counts when cancer strikes... The world’s best, fully independent one-to-one cancer concierge service - providing priority access to the best doctors, and the best treatments, whilst taking care of every detail associated with the cancer journey

T

here are very few of us who have not known someone who has been impacted by cancer – whether personally, or by a loved one or close friend who has been struck by the disease in some form. It is a traumatic experience, both for the patient and for their nearest and dearest who have to remain supportive during this very stressful time. Confusion, anger and frustration are words often associated with early stage diagnosis. For people used to having the best of everything in their lives, getting cutting edge treatment with rapid or priority access will be paramount. However knowing where to start is another matter. The key is getting objective information from an independent, well informed source, with no affiliation to any particular cancer clinic, but who can fast-track consultations with leading specialists in order to get rapid, definitive answers. Advances in personalised cancer treatments have led to increasingly complex care strategies and technologies, many of which are not available in mainstream health services or private clinics outside London. Many of Harley Street’s top cancer specialists are leaders in their field and are involved in groundbreaking research that can directly affect individual treatment plans. Having the correct knowledge of how to access this level of specialist care along with the peace of mind that every aspect of the process will be managed

Supported by an efficient team of professionals, one-to-one Personal Managers can fasttrack appointments, manage appointment schedules, attend medical consultations and treatment sessions, arrange travel, transport and accommodation, organise personal treatment research investigations and medical records as well as the interminable bureaucracy associated with form filling, insurers and medical bills. In short, HSCC can oversee everything. Without the patient worrying that they are receiving the best treatment available, or for the carer in trying to manage all the logistics, the patient is able to concentrate on getting better, faster, and the carer can focus on providing all the love and support necessary to help the patient achieve their aim. “The burden of cancer is significant and can

be overwhelming and confusing for patients. Having treated a number of HSCC patients they are better prepared for treatment and less anxious, which has benefits all round. This is a much needed service.” Justin Stebbing (Professor of Cancer Medicine, Imperial College, London.) Only HSCC’s new unique service, can offer this opportunity. It is ideal for those living outside London, or visitors from abroad, or even City of London workers or dwellers who simply do not have the time or knowledge to deal with the problems involved. Harley Street Cancer Concierge believes peace of mind is priceless and the decision to invest in your health is one of the most important choices you will ever make. TOP 10 TIPS TO HELP YOUR KIDS EAT MORE HEALTHILY

I

n modern times we are becoming increasingly aware of the shortcomings of the foods we are feeding our children. Surveys show that children and teenagers are eating higher levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat than government guidelines recommend, and are failing to reach the five-a-day target for fruit and vegetable portions. This means that they are potentially missing out on vital nutrients that contribute to optimum development. So, in practical terms, what can parents do to ensure their children develop healthy eating habits? Here are some tips to follow when considering your children and their nutrition: Eat with your children. Children learn by example — make mealtimes enjoyable: set the table, discuss the day’s events, turn off the TV and put on some music or enjoy the silence. ‘Family’ eating not only promotes home-cooked meals, it also fosters a sense of routine and encourages social interaction — all of which lead to better eating habits later in life. Make food fun! Experiment with new foods and make meals as colourful and as rich in variety as possible. We are naturally ‘turned on’ by diversity — so the more visually stimulating a meal appears, and the more textures it incorporates, the more likely your children will be to tuck in! Include two portions of vegetables in their evening meal, and provide fruit or a fruit-based pudding for dessert. This will help ensure that your children get three out of five servings of their recommended five-a-day at dinnertime Encourage your children to drink water or sugar-free diluting juice between meals. This will help prevent dehydration, which can lead to constipation and poor concentration. If you have a fussy eater in the household, don’t give up hope. Try serving the same foods in different forms — for example, people

9 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

who dislike the texture of broccoli often find it more palatable in a sauce or soup. I nclude lean meat or another protein in every meal. This will help keep your children fuller for longer and will discourage snacking later in the day/evening. Red meat will also provide iron — which is particularly important for girls, who tend to eat less red meat of their own accord, yet whose iron needs increase as they begin menstruation. S erve oily fish twice a week (but no more). These are a rich source of omega oils, which can help keep heart and mind healthy; try salmon, fresh tuna and grilled sardines. If your children find the taste too overwhelming, add seeds to their breakfast cereals for plant versions of these oils. Pack a healthy lunchbox. ‘Disguise’ vegetables in sandwich fillings, vary the fillings, provide plain yogurt and a piece of fruit that’s easy to eat. Children can be very particular about fruit. Aim to give them small apples, bananas and grapes, which are easy to hold, peel and eat. M ake sure your children eat breakfast. This will ensure a steady supply of energy to get them through the morning, help maintain attention span and discourage snacking. Fortified breakfast cereals can also be a good source of iron and B vitamins. Minerals to consider .. Two particularly important minerals for school-aged children and teenagers are calcium and iron, which help strengthen teeth and bones and prevent anaemia, poor concentration and lethargy respectively. To ensure that children’s needs are met, include milk and other dairy products, pulses, lean red meat and green leafy vegetables frequently in meals. Foods containing Vitamin C — such as orange juice — can also increase iron intake if drunk alongside iron-rich foods.

Even with the best of intentions it’s still hard to keep to the simple mantra eat well and exercise regularly isn’t it? WORDS BY TERRY RODHAM; HOGARTH GROUP WELLNESS MANAGER

I

n our speedy modern society where we are constantly juggling work, social lives, finances, family and relationships, it is often a regular exercise regime and a healthy diet that proves a step too far. Too confusing, too hard, too time consuming, and let’s face it, easy to ignore, nutrition and exercise are aspects of every day life in which we could all do with a little help. We recognise these challenges at our clubs and provide members with expert guidance and regular one to one contact combined with the latest in fitness technology to make the process of maintaining and improving personal well-being easier to manage, understand, and achieve. Balance Is The Key Here at The Hogarth and The Park Club, we have adopted the concept of Wellness, defined as ‘’a balance of mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling

9 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

of wellbeing.’’ The key to that statement is balance. Not only do we consider it our job to guide you inside the gym, we also undertake to guide you outside the gym to help you achieve this balance because, after all, there is more to life than eating chicken salad and pounding the treadmill! Starting On The Right Path From the moment you walk through the doors of the Hogarth and The Park Club, you have at your disposal the support and expert guidance of a highly qualified personal trainer. Beginning with an initial Wellness Gym Consultation where your goals, challenges, exercise background and lifestyle are discussed, members are guided through another four one to one training sessions in which a highly personalised routine is designed. This one to one time is vital not only to explain, repeat, feedback, tweak and perfect the gym routine, but

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

also to discuss other important areas such as activity outside the gym and nutrition, aspects which come together to form a fuller picture of Wellness. Remember, true Wellness is only achieved with balance, so perhaps a stroll along the river in the sunshine on a Sunday afternoon instead of a gym session could be more beneficial to your long term success? The ‘’Key’’ To Success Many people feel lost in the gym environment, lacking direction with a general feeling of ‘’doing the wrong thing’’. Using the latest in gym technology, members of our Clubs carry their workout information with them on a special ‘’Wellness Key’’ which can be inserted into any machine, providing the user with information such as the correct weight to use, the number of repetitions, or the resistance level and time on an exercise bike. Not only does this give the user confidence, it also stores all your exercise results such as calories burned, weight lifted or distance covered so that a review can be conducted by a trainer and goals/ targets adjusted accordingly. This is just one example of how we use technology to make things easier to manage. Regular Contact Regular contact between our members and trainers is our major focus. In addition to the five sessions at the beginning of a members Wellness journey, members are also entitled to one complimentary session every month in which progress can be discussed, technique and form checked and goals reassessed. It is this regular contact that we believe keeps our members engaged in their routine and confident to continue. Yet we go one stage further, understanding that not everyone will be able to arrange one to one sessions around their busy lifestyles: using our ‘’Coach’’ application, our trainers are able to stay in regular contact with members wherever

they may be, by sending and receiving messages through the members Wellness Account. If you’ve had a period of inactivity on your account, you can expect an email from one of our trainers to make sure everything is okay! Staying Connected With all the gadgets we have at our disposal these days, there really is no excuse not to stay connected with your club and trainer. You can use your smart phone to access your Wellness account wherever you are, be it on the train, on an overseas work trip or even at the pub! In a hotel gym and need your routine? No problem! Why not use your laptop or tablet to register physical activity from home, such as a game of tennis or a cycle around the park? You can even go one step further and attach the Technogym MyWellness key to your hip before going for that Sunday stroll and download the information when you get home, recording the calories burned even through you have not stepped through the gym doors! And of course, if all this technology is too much, simple face to face time is always available from our welcoming and knowledgeable staff. We love to see members enjoying their routine and reaping the benefits of regular exercise, wherever it may be Is now the time to get support to help you on a path to Wellness? Posh Pawn

Prestige Pawnbrokers were recently featured in a Channel 4 documentary, Posh Pawn. We go behind the scenes to find out more about how it works and why business is booming! BY JESS CONTOMICHALOS

I

f you take a stroll down Kew Road, Richmond you will find a variety of designer shops, boutiques, cafĂŠs and galleries. Incongruous as it may seem, nestling amongst them is Prestige Pawnbrokers who specialise in luxury goods including fine art, wine watches, classic cars, jewellery and of course gold. If you look closely into this select neighbourhood you will discover that many people are asset rich but in the recent recession, cash poor and that is the reason that Prestige seem to be kept busy all year round!

9 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

Prestige Pawnbrokers was the brainchild of no nonsense business man and ex property developer, James Constantinou. With an eye for a profit, James saw a gap in the market and set up Prestige in 2009. James soon discovered he was being offered a range of products that not only included the more usual items such as jewellery and watches, but also a range of more unusual items such as antiques, works of art, fine wine and even classic cars.

F E AT U R E

James’ vision has proved unstoppable He and his team now operate a growing empire that has tapped into a seemingly endless supply of wealthy customers who have been perhaps turned down elsewhere but are in need of a quick cash injection. What makes Prestige so appealing is the fact that James doesn’t do credit checks as he has the item as his security and he will also offer a seven month period to pay back the loan (with interest) or if you can’t pay it back you can reinstate the loan and just pay back the interest due. The tale of upmarket pawn was documented recently by Channel 4 programme, Posh Pawn. It made such fascinating viewing that Channel 4 are seriously considering making an entire series based on James original shop in Weybridge and his new venture, a second branch in affluent Richmond. ‘We just never know what will happen from day to day which makes it very exciting. The other day I got offered a helicopter and last week I acquired a Lamborghini. We get all sorts of stories that go with the items ranging from business start ups through to one woman who pawned jewellery to pay for a private detective to follow her straying husband!’ explains James. ‘Obviously, the story ends best for us when we can help people and

they come back for their goods, but sometimes it doesn’t go that way so I always have to consult my experts before loaning any money against items I’m not sure about. I’ve had rare coins, Hermes Birkin bags, a Lichtenstein as well as some first edition books which were hugely exciting as they were signed’, smiles James. Having cannily set up his business in leafy Weybridge, James has found he has a constant stream of affluent customers with something to pawn. Typical of his dynamic business acumen, James has now set up a new store in Richmond. ‘Richmond is a great venue for Prestige, it is very cosmopolitan, close to London and like Weybridge, it is home to a bank of celebrities, rock stars and millionaires, so I am hoping that we will soon see the same returns as our Weybridge branch but hopefully bigger diamonds, faster cars and maybe a yacht or two as well!’ smiles James. If you missed the Channel 4 documentary you can find it here http://www.prestigepawnbrokers.co.uk/channel-4-posh-pawn For more information or to talk to James and his team contact Prestige Pawnbrokers Richmond on 0800 707 6260 or 0208 948 4867.

Arthur Bryant Coins is a London-based coin dealing company and member of the British Numismatic Trade Association that specialises in buying and selling British coins and medals from the Anglo Saxons to the present monarch.

T

he company is run by Arthur Bryant and Clare Bowden. Arthur previously worked in the retail coin department at Spink and Sons gaining a wealth of experience and knowledge and Clare has worked as an economist for a number of years.

“The British coin market has gone from strength to strength over the last decade,” notes Arthur. “When the value of collectables, such as coins, is seen to be improving an increasing number of investors take an interest in the area as well as traditional collectors. “ People collect coins for a number of reasons ranging from a desire to own a tangible piece of history to acquiring items for investment purposes. Clare says, “we deal with customers that have been involved in collecting for many years but I take great satisfaction in introducing the hobby to new customers who often don’t realise that they can handle and buy such old and historically significant items.” “There is a misconception that a silver penny of William I could only be found in a museum or that a gold angel of Elizabeth I would be worth tens of thousands of pounds” adds Arthur. “The coin market is far more accessible than many would expect with starting prices well

9 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

below the £100 mark that can make for an interesting purchase and excellent gifts to capture the imagination.” Clare and Arthur believe that customers tend to get greater satisfaction out of collecting a certain period of history or type of coin that interests them, such as Tudor silver or a date run of gold sovereigns. If a customer enjoys forming a collection and buys the best quality examples that they can afford they are very likely to have formed something that will be highly desirable to others. Their diverse range of stock has something for everyone, whether you are looking for a one off purchase or you are a seasoned collector, and there are items that cater for all budgets. In addition to selling, Arthur Bryant Coins is always looking to acquire British coins to maintain its diverse stock and encourages anyone who has anything that may be suitable to get in contact. You may have something tucked away that is of greater value than you think.

Investing in family life With stamp duty standing at 7% on properties worth over £2m it is not surprising people think very hard before moving house in London’s richest boroughs.

P

aying upwards of £140,000 over and above the costs of moving is a major deterrent, and a number of London’s top agents are seeing a change in the pattern of sales, particularly amongst families with school age children. Mark Redfern, Head of Knight Frank’s Kensington Offices says, “We have seen a shift in the way families with children are behaving. The exodus to the country is happening more infrequently and families are extending their houses with basements in order to stay in London as their children grow up.” Creating extra space in a much-loved family home is highly desirable for those who choose to live in London long term. However, planning restrictions in most boroughs prevent upward extension so excavating a basement is often the only option. The cost of creating a basement is not insignificant, but when weighed up against the potential value of £1500-£2500

1 0 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

per square foot once the work has been done, it makes sound financial sense. Cranbrook Basements work with clients throughout Central London with a particular focus on Royal Borough Kensington & Chelsea and the City of Westminster. They have been designing and creating basements for 30 years and are proud of their 100% success rate in achieving planning consent. Kevin O’Connor, Managing Director of Cranbrook says, “The planning applications we submit on behalf of our clients are robust and extremely detailed. We know exactly what is needed to secure planning consent.” O’Connor continues, “We understand that our clients are investing in the future of their homes and their family life. We offer a complete service from the beginning to the end of the project and work closely with our clients at every single stage of the process, involving them as much as they wish. At the outset, we help them work out exactly

H OUS E & GA R D E N

what they need in their new basement, whether it is a TV room, more bedroom space, lifestyle options such as a gym or steam room or more practical spaces such as a wine cellar or utility room.” “We highlight the options available and our in-house architects plan the space according to our client’s wishes and budget. We create 3D visualisations so they can see the room layouts and get a feel for how the space will work for them. After a few months, when the plans have become reality, our clients sometimes wonder how they lived in their houses before the work was done.” Most terraced houses in London were built over 150 years ago when lifestyles were very different. Some houses are top heavy, with too many bedrooms and not enough space downstairs. James Pace, Head of Knight Frank’s Chelsea & South Kensington office says, “In traditional terraced houses there is plenty of bedroom space but the living space is comparatively small. A basement extension which has a large kitchen or media room creates the extra living space that is

needed these days, and of course, adds value to the property.” Cranbrook Basements work on approximately 14 projects a year in central London. Their 140 full time employees take immense pride in their work and are committed to the highest levels of service. As one neighbour said recently, “I can’t praise Cranbrook highly enough. The site is clean; they even sweep and hose down the road every day. There isn’t shouting on the site; they are courteous and polite.” Cranbrook Basements are running a children’s drawing competition entitled Undergound London, from 6 January – 4 April 2014. CHELSEA FABRICS Chelsea Fabrics was established twenty years ago as producers and wholesale suppliers of Curtain and Upholstery fabrics.

A

t that time the most popular fabrics were printed designs and the Company sold its own exclusive designs not only to numerous shops and stores in the UK but exported to markets as diverse as Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the UAE and Scandinavia amongst many others.

About three years later, the company set up a showroom in Fulham, West London, which included a retail department named The Curtain Fabric Factory, to sell its discontinued designs direct to the public at greatly discounted prices. Over the next decade, demand for prints diminished and plains and textures almost entirely took over the market. Such was the demand for discounted fabrics in the retail shop, that more emphasis was placed in that area and the offer was greatly expanded. Making excellent use of the contacts that the company had established overseas enabled a huge selection of fabrics to be sourced from the best Mills Worldwide, cutting out the middle man and offered at very keen prices. Other products and services were gradually introduced, including curtain tracks and poles of every description, including electric, remote controlled systems, Roman, Roller, Venetian and Vertical blinds, again including motorised systems, all fitted by the Companies expert fitters. Also a recently introduced upholstery service to compliment the huge range of upholstery fabrics on offer, all discounted of course. Over the years, the ranges of fabrics have been increased expedentialy, to 1 0 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

the extent that the choice of colours, styles, qualities and effects, is probably the largest in West London. There are dozens of different types of plains and semi plains, ranging from pure silks to velvets, traditional florals to the latest themes in abstracts, jacquards, embroideries, satins, designs with horses, designs with maps, butterflies, flowers of every description, trees, animal skins, the list is virtually endless. And for clients who cant find their perfect choice in stock, there are thousands of samples from the Worlds leading Mills to browse through. The only criticism and one often repeated, is that the choice is too large ! But to help with this expert staff are on hand to advise with a no pressure, one to one service. It is no accident that a large percentage of customers are repeat ones or have been personally recommended. The stores somewhat unlikely location is in the middle of North End Road, Fulham at the junction with Lillie Road, just along from the famous fruit and vegetable market and within a short walk from West Kensington, Fulham Broadway and West Brompton Road tube stations or easy pay & display parking around he corner. The narrow entrance belies the 5,000 square feet of space crammed full of stock to which it opens up. If there was such a thing as a “Fabric Tardis this is certainly it, and well worth a visit. Handle it your way!

L

ocks & Handles is a shop specializing in British door and window handles in a bewildering array of sizes and finishes. Comprehensive stocks of furniture, cabinet and cupboard hardware are held. Architectural Ironmongery including all types of locks & latches, brass electrical switch plates and ventilation grilles are available. They also sell bathroom accessories like taps and an amazing selection of shower baskets. The business, founded in 1965, used to be located in Exhibition Road in South Kensington but has now relocated to larger premises on Effie Road, just off Fulham Broadway. It is now easier for parking and is a minute walk from the Underground station. While traditional period design brass fittings are the main stock line, Locks & Handles now sell an increasing quantity of contemporary designed chrome plated products. Currently polished nickel plate is the fashionable finish and is being specified by many customers. Bronze is of course the perfect finish for front door furniture and, although this is more expensive, is highly recommended. Although Locks & Handles is based in London a good selection of ‘rustic’ black iron door furniture, usually associated with country cottages, is held in stock. It is lovely to see quality British manufactured brassware so well represented in this shop along with European manufactured products. Unlike the high street DIY stores, Locks & Handles specialize in the higher quality English manufactured hardware. This is one of the industries that Britain leads the

1 0 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

world in. The quality & finish of English manufactured door furniture & bathroom accessories is far superior to the imported items. The Locks & Handles sales assistants are willing to help with any enquiry no matter how unusual and are extremely knowledgeable. Even if you are not quite sure about what exactly you might require or need, they can offer advice or find you a solution to your enquiry. Most fittings are actually on display in the showroom so you can really get a feel of them in a tactile way and have a better sense of the different finishes available, which is something that you cannot always get from looking at a picture on the internet or from a catalogue. The shop tries to keep most items in stock but if something is unavailable they have regular deliveries from all British manufacturers. The company offers to supply bespoke items and other finishes to ‘special order’ and regular customers include many of the worlds leading interior designers, hotels, palaces and luxury liners. A visit to this specialist shop is highly recommended to everyone who has an interest in interior design, building or renovating their home. With a wealth of knowledge and over thirty years of experience, they provide quality work for all of their customers.

T

hey cater for homeowners, builders and architects and are committed to the restoration and preservation of architectural features, combining traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques and materials to reproduce original features such as cornices, ceiling centres and corbels in precise detail and to an exceptionally high quality. Their showroom is based in Wandsworth, South West London. With their extensive knowledge and empathy with various eras of interior dĂŠcor, they can match any classical feature with great accuracy. They take pride in the competitive prices they offer so you can rely on them to restore your property cleanly and efficiently. Their website www.classiccornice.co.uk shows a wide range of stock items, plain cornices, ornate cornice, ceiling centres, dados, brackets and fire surrounds. They also provide a bespoke service and can restore existing features to their former glory by removing deteriorated sections and casting and replacing them, in order to preserve the style and charm of the original period. There is an immense amount of ornate plasterwork in Great Britain

in many different styles. Over the years much has become damaged or destroyed. The means of restoring and conserving ornate plasterwork has changed over the centuries. While it is important to maintain as much as possible of the original plasterwork it may be necessary to restore or replace missing or damaged sections. To carry out this work requires considerable experience. Their modeller is able to take mouldings from existing designs, if symmetrical or modelling can be executed from a photograph or drawing. Plasterwork can be cleaned or left, a model laid down and a mould made in varying types of compounds, from this mould a section of plasterwork can be reproduced and installed. A cast is then produced which can then be installed to match the original. Their work is not limited to interior cornices, decorative ceilings, arches and columns. They also manufacture and install exterior mouldings, both ornate and plain. These can be produced in sand and cement, fibreglass or Jesmonite, a resin bonded cement. This product is lighter and more durable and comes in Limestone, Portland stone, Sandstone and plain white.

Le Défilé Collection The new Jean Paul Gaultier - Le Défilé Collection is strong and original as you would expect from the iconic French fashion designer

mages of crushed metal appear on two luscious fabrics for upholstery on chairs and sofas. The tactile textures are a surprise, Fangio is a soft sueded velvet while monochrome Le Male has brilliant silver reflections simulating chrome metal.

Spots are an essential design in the Gaultier fashion collections, Spatial is an explosion of giant spots, like a series of full moons with halos for an ethereal look while Coquin brings a touch of calm with regular iridescent spots bordered in black. The MOUSAILLON fabric has lovers and musicians wearing marine stripes in red or blue for a unique decoupage-style motif. The 6 different medallions show romantic stylised images by photographers Pierre & Gilles which form the design repeat. 1 1 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

Angelots fabric shows amusing angelic tableaus on an astonishingly pretty satin cotton toile de Jouy. Obvious echoes of the fashion collections with Casino, an ultra feminine design with lace on a fishnet background for a seductive damask fabric with the unmistakable Gaultier look. Finally, full of mood and meaning, Vagabond is a large scale soft focus photographic landscape, playing with perspective on supple linen.

SHELDRAKE EXTENDING OAK TABLE

Understated English style & traditional tradesmanship

W

hen you walk into Woods of London, the Neptune store in Blackheath, you are not in just another Kitchen showroom. The calm and welcoming showrooms have beautiful handmade furniture and painted walls which have obviously been designed to complement each other . Just a glance around the large showroom confirmed what I had been led to believe about the quality and design of the Neptune offer. Neptune are one of the success stories of the last few years having grown from a Garden Furniture supplier to one of the leading suppliers and CHICHESTER CLOSED BEDSIDE CABINET designers of the highest quality Kitchens and Furniture in the UK, it’s hard not to pick up a Magazine without seeing their brand being talked about or strongly advertised and I was looking forward to actually seeing the large range at last in a convenient location.

Right by the entrance, I was immediately impressed by the Sheldrake oak table which started as a small round table seating just 4, and extend to a gigantic 270cm table for a party of 10. You could see that the company epitomise the understated English style and traditional tradesmanship that is rarely found in today’s mass produced world, it was even more surprising when I found out the cost of this was under £900. The table was complimented with a wide range of Dressers and Bookcases that again showed the timeless style that will no doubt stand the test of time and look as good in 20 years as it did in the showroom today. In the same area was a luxurious sofa and chairs where I took five minutes to flick through the free brochures I had picked up. There was also a large display of accessories nearby which although I would have loved in my home, I decided were great for some of my friends for Christmas so alas I can only hope the large circles on the brochure

London Design Guide 2014/2015 Edition

edited by Max Fraser

London’s only comprehensive design guide returns with new content and contributors in this totally updated and rewritten third edition.

F

or fans of contemporary and vintage design and those looking to access it, London Design Guide gives a fresh insight into the city’s design retailers, galleries, museums and bookshops.

More than 150 new and established hotspots are compiled and reviewed, providing a tantalising viewpoint of the design capital of the world. Each entry is categorised by neighbourhood and accompanied by detailed maps to help navigate the best that the city has to offer. In each of the ten neighbourhood chapters, we’ve honed in on streets that demonstrate a healthy mix of independent shops and services and asked selected business owners to comment on their evolution and attributes, with contributors including Stephen Webster, Ally Capellino, Sam & Sam Clarke and Michael Anastassiades. Furthermore, restaurant, bar and café recommendations are featured for each area, selected as much for their design credentials as for the quality of food and service. Every edition of London Design Guide includes themed essays from

1 1 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

a variety of design experts and commentators. In this edition, we’ve examined the state of retail during a period when shops are undoubtedly struggling with a weak economy, tapered footfall, highrents and the great might of internet shopping. We ask retailers and analysts, including Sheridan Coakley (scp), Simon Alderson (twentytwentyone), Lina Kanafani (Mint) and Magnus Englund (Skandium), what’s the future trajectory of bricks-and-mortar shops? The 208-page London Design Guide is a snapshot of the design scene today, a celebration of creativity and a practical tool for Londoners and tourists alike. There’s no better incentive for exploring the wealth of design in the capital. About the editor... Max Fraser is a design commentator and author whose work broadens the conversation around contemporary design. Fraser is the founder of Spotlight Press, an independent imprint that publishes London Design Guide and other titles. He also works as the Deputy Director of the annual London Design Festival. The 208 page guide is launched on 12th September 2013, at a retail price of £12.

JOHN BLY ANTIQUES

Mr Baxter & pot lids... A recent article by Andrew Roberts in a Sunday supplement cautioned the dangers of abandoning teaching proper history in the proper manner, for it is by such means that we may learn from a past situation, compare it with the status quo and have an inkling of what may occur next. I agree.

F

or many years I have advocated that an all-round look at social history through the ages is the easiest and most enjoyable way to learn about antiques of any category, and studying their recent history in supply and demand has added another dimension to the subject; that of financial gains and losses. Take for example the work of George Baxter, 1804 –1867, the printer, whose pre-eminence faded during his lifetime but whose work saw a frenzied revival during the 1920’s only to fade again during the late 20th century. George Baxter was the son of a publisher and bookseller and having served his apprenticeship to a wood engraver set himself the task of revolutionising printing techniques in colour. The process incorporated the use of coloured oil inks, an initial metal keyplate and up to twenty further metal or wood blocks to apply each individual colour. Thus Baxter is acknowledged as the ‘inventor’ of this colour printing method for which he received deserved acclaim, but only for a while. He was granted a patent in 1835 and by 1845 had exhibited at The Royal Academy. He had been commissioned to make coloured prints of the Queen’s Coronation and the Opening of Parliament and in 1851 took a stand at The Great Exhibition where he received an award. He made a set of prints showing Paxton’s masterful Crystal Palace and continued to diversify his work into prints that could be applied to virtually any surface and depict any subject. In the 1920’s several large books on the man, his life and works were produced at great cost for a large and enthusiastic band of devotees. A shame that these came sixty or so years after Baxter’s wretched demise for in 1860 he was declared bankrupt and in 1866 was hit by a carriage and died in penury and no doubt in pain a year later. One major problem was that his processes were so laborious that by the time his wonderful pictures of great occasions were ready for marketing they were long since over and yesterday’s news. But for us his legacy is extraordinary; beautifully crafted scenes of Victorian life, great masterpieces of art, national heroes, theatrical heroines, historic moments and events from popular fiction, all to be found on a vast range of items from paper pictures, wooden caskets and boxes, porcelain panels and, my own favourite, ceramic pot lids. But it was not long before a small number of other companies found less costly ways around Baxter’s printing patent. Here the name

1 1 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

of Felix Edward Pratt enters the story. He was the man who recognized that the new, cheaper transfer printing enabled reproductions of Baxters’s work to be applied to the covers of these round shallow jars which were made to contain everything from fish paste to tooth paste, ointments for every conceivable skin complaint and bear’s grease hair conditioners for Victorian gentlemen. One such balm, Macassar Oil, was so popular that the name became synonymous with any scalp application that marked the backs of upholstered chairs and so caused the creation of crocheted slip covers known as Antimacassars. This was also the time when gentlemen wore smoking caps to prevent the smell of tobacco smoke impregnating their perfumed hair oil. See what I mean about social history. Anyway, with the development of mass production of the jars in the Stoke-on-Trent potteries, pot lids became as available and collectable in their time as the prizes in a Corn Flake Packet are today, with the difference that they were durable. They could be framed and hung on the wall or displayed in cabinets. While many were made to carry the brand name of the contents or the retailer, the most desirable continued to be those bearing the ‘Baxter’ type prints. In the mid1950’s large collections of pot lids were formed but in books on antiques produced during the late 20th and early 21st century they get, along with George Baxter, barely a mention. However, when there is a finite supply there will always be a steady and often increasing demand for the genuine article. There are over 4000 lid patterns recorded and over 300 Baxter prints registered, and there is a Pot Lid Circle which you can join. There is no doubt that to judge from economic patterns of the past we can look at these two categories now and be sure that they will return once more to wider acclaim... by the time this is published they may be doing so already. But don’t all rush at once, give me a chance. After all it was my idea. However, as a word of warning, during their heyday of great demand and high prices, fakes were made. Some are easy to spot from their poor quality but others have all the appearances of genuine age, including the crackled glaze produced during the firing process, which can so easily deceive.

So do as much research as you can before you venture forth. I am indebted to Anna Maggs of Yewtree Antiques for the illustrations.

Live like a pop star For £14million you can stroll down Compton Avenue, Highgate in the footsteps of Lulu, Maurice Gibb and Ringo Starr

T

here was a time when you could stroll down this leafy, exclusive enclave and bump into Ringo Starr, Lulu, Maurice Gibb, Jo Lewis (the Bahamian billionaire), Richard Caring and Roger Levitt. This quiet backwater has 24-hour security at its entrance where by giving a passport, utility bill, inside leg measurement and shoe size would still not necessarily allow you entry. It is, after all, one of Highgate’s most cherished addresses; where residents enjoy the privacy of luxury away from the prying eyes of the public. Woodley was, for many years, the former home of Lulu and the late Maurice Gibb. The present owners have now lovingly restored it to its former glory. It is a very interesting pastiche of architectural styles blending the traditional country house with some contemporary and novel overtures. The house itself is over 8,000 sq ft and is set in half an acre of manicured grounds with a sweeping carriage drive leading from this exclusive tree lined Avenue. The eight-bedroom house includes six bathrooms, an indoor swimming pool and has a studio at the bottom of the garden that, in Lulu and Maurice Gibb’s time, was in fact a recording studio. It is a unique opportunity for the buyer to enjoy what is, after all, a small country estate yet only 15 minutes from the West End and nestled between two medieval villages - Hampstead and Highgate. If

1 2 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3

you turn to the left you will walk straight on to Highgate golf course (one of two within walking distance) and if you go to the right you go to Kenwood and The Heath. A private airport is within half an hour and, with the consent of Highgate School, you may even be able to land a helicopter nearby. Trevor Abrahmsohn, Managing Director of Glentree, describes Woodley as an ‘elegant and exceptional’ property at a ‘cherished’ address. He said: ‘When you buy a house such as Woodley in Compton Avenue you don’t just buy an elegant imposing substantial home with all sorts of luxuries, you also get an illustrious history of stars and fame. ‘The very prestigious Highgate School, with their unique sporting facilities, is within walking distance. ‘Who wouldn’t want to live in this wonderful place? All you need is £14million and it’s all yours! You gain instant heritage, bathed in the stardom of the illustrious former owners or you can live in complete tranquillity. Abrahmsohn added: ‘This is an exceptional house for the discerning buyer who has become weary of just another imposing mansion for sale.’ For further information Trevor Abrahmsohn or T: 020 8209 1149 M: 07831 339699 www.glentree.co.uk
