ondon’s biggest city-wide music festival brings together established stars and emerging talent, reflecting the traditions of jazz and illustrating its breadth and depth. In a programme made up of premieres, commissions, one-off collaborations, talks, family events, workshops and a fantastic Jazz for Free series, 280 concerts in over 50 venues across the capital.

The line-up of artists is as impressive as ever and takes in a number of landmark anniversaries on the way.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Impulse! Records McCoy Tyner* revisits the classic John Coltrane/Johnny Hartman vocal record with José James and Chris Potter.

Other jazz giants associated with the label in the 1960s are also featured - modern jazz drum giant Roy Haynes and firebrand saxophonist Archie Shepp with pianist Joachim Kühn. These artists are joined

by Steve Coleman, Bill Frisell, Abdullah Ibrahim, David Sanborn, Martial Solal, Steve Swallow and Henry Threadgill, plus younger stars like Ambrose Akinmusire, Stefano Bollani* and Lionel Loueke.

The Festival explore the riches of jazz history in a variety of ways. In celebration of Louis Armstrong’s 110th birthday, the Festival presents the European premiere of ‘Louis’, a brand new silent movie that re-imagines a young Louis Armstrong as he navigates the colourful intricacies of life in the quintessential jazz city. Wynton Marsalis’s score is played by a hand-picked ensemble of some of the composer’s closest associates, directed by trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, including saxophonist Wes Anderson, and drummer Herlin Riley, contributing a spirited counterpoint to director Dan Pritzker’s stunning Chaplin-inspired movie.

The Festival’s legendary opening night is celebrated in style with Jazz Voice*, featuring Ayanna, Gregory Porter, Ian Shaw, Lucinda Belle, Mary Pearce, Norma Winstone and Shingai Shoniwa (The Noisettes), arranged and scored by Guy Barker and accompanied by the London Jazz Festival Orchestra.

Jazz has always had strong global connections and this year there is a chance to see two seminal figures that have made worldwide impact tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and Cape Verdean superstar Cesaria Evora, plus two Iranian masters, Kayhan Kalhor and Madjid Khaladj. ECM multiinstrumentalist Stephan Micus, brings his astonishing range of instruments from across the globe for an extremely rare London performance.

European pianists of extreme talent appear throughout the Festival. From the British scene, Mercury Prize-nominee Gwilym Simcock plays multiple gigs across the Festival, Jason Yarde and Andrew McCormack launch their new Edition album Spaces and Other Places, Empirical open for jazz giant Archie Shepp and saxophonist Steve Williamson makes a rare London appearance.

The Festival takes the London club scene by storm, with performances from former EST linchpin Magnus Ostrom and trioVD at The CAMP, Robert Glasper Experiment at XOYO and a fiercely creative meeting between Charles Gayle and Han Bennink at Charlie Wright’s. Colin Vallon brings his cutting-edge Swiss trio to Pizza Express Jazz Club, and Istanbul’s club culture hits Southbank Centre in two latenight sessions with saxophonist/ keyboardist and agent provocateur Ilhan Ersahin.

International Wimbledon Music Festival

or the past three years ‘Big Hitters’ have been making their way to Wimbledon not only for the summer Tennis Championships but for two weeks of glorious music making at the International Wimbledon Music Festival each November.

This year the sporting and cultural life of this leafy suburb are coming into closer harmony through a newly commissioned work based on a poem by 2010 Championship Poet in Residence, Matthew Harvey

write a work which premieres on Thursday 24th November.

The tennis metaphors have come thick and fast, the latest with BBC Music Magazine declaring this years musical offering : “Wimbledon’s serve is perfect pitch’’, whilst other headlines have put the Festival on the international map. Gramophone has the festival among ‘The Best Events Worldwide’ and German Tokafi headlined: ‘Wimbledon Music Festival: Re-defining the Best’.

So what is the ‘best’ at Wimbledon this year? Well you can’t do much better than this quartet of soloists – Nancy Argenta, Michael Chance, Allan Clayton and Roderick Williams – in Bach’s B minor Mass which opens the Festival on 12th November. Whilst closing the Festival on 27th November are the dazzling London Winds, one of the world’s most prominent chamber ensembles.

Perhaps the scoop of the year comes with the UK premiere of a stunning, visual realization of Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ at the hands of Russian pianist Mikhail Rudy and the great Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, who was inspired by the music to stage a work for ‘total theatre’ while he was at the Bauhaus in the late 1920s. down the original elements, water colours, and annotated score to realize a full length animation which is projected on a vast screen above him while he plays. Go to Wimbledon on 19th November to experience this remarkable event.

Another major production will bring more than 100 of Merton school children to perform alongside international stars in a performance of Benjamin Britten’s community opera ‘Noye’s Fludde’. Students of Wimbledon College of Art have made spectacular life-size puppets to lead the groups of animals into the Ark. This year’s Festival will open on Wednesday 12th October with the European premiere of 360, directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Constant Gardener, Blindness) and with an original screenplay from the acclaimed writer Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/ Nixon). Meirelles is no stranger to the Festival after The Constant Gardener (for which Rachel Weisz later won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar) opened it in 2005.

360 is a modern and stylish kaleidoscope of interconnected love and relationships linking characters from different cities and countries in a vivid, suspenseful and deeply moving tale of romantic life in the 21st century. Hester Collyer (Academy Award ® winner Rachel Weisz) leads a privileged life in 1950s London as the beautiful wife of high court judge Sir William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale). To the shock of those around her, she walks out on her marriage to move in with young ex-RAF pilot, Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston), with whom she has fallen passionately in love.

Set in post-war Britain, this deeply moving story is an adaptation of Terence Rattigan’s classic play, The Deep Blue Sea is a study of forbidden love, suppressed desire, and the fear of loneliness. Stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, what – or whom – should Hester choose?

Regent Street Motor Show L ondon’s famous Regent Street will be traffic free for a display of over 300 iconic cars representing pioneering motoring achievements across the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries and feature an all-new, unique and free motoring spectacular.

Presented by The Royal Automobile Club, in conjunction with the Regent Street Association, the first presentation of this unique motoring extravaganza will span over a third of a mile of Regent Street, from Piccadilly Circus to Conduit Street, and is expected to entertain over 250,000 visitors.

At the heart of the fascinating new Motor Show will be the Concours d’Elegance – a breathtaking historic motoring display of around 100 19th Century 24 o c t o b e r 2 0 1 1

t John’s Wood’s gardens are arguably one of London’s best kept secrets. The Queen’s Terrace Café’s new exhibition offers a tantalizing glimpse behind the area’s famous brick walls.

As gardens have been central to the development and history of St John’s Wood, this is an important theme.

The Queen’s Terrace Café in St John’s Wood was set up by Mireille Galinou in April this year. This cultural café ‘cares about heritage and creativity in its neighbourhood’ while serving attractive food and of course coffee! As Mireille Galinou wrote the new detailed history of St John’s Wood - Cottages and Villas, published last year by Yale University Press - she is well placed to fulfill the mission of this new breed of café on the London scene.

This is the third exhibition organised by the Queen’s Terrace Café which opened with an exhibition of paintings

by Mark Cazalet. It was followed by the extraordinary installation Café Jiro by the painter Jiro Osuga.

Built in 1887, Kew’s Bonsai House was originally used for displaying Alpine plants, and over the years it has been enlarged and reconstructed. Bonsai are ornamental trees or shrubs that are grown in pots and pruned to present a miniature version of a mature tree.

Chief Executive Cally Palmer said: ‘We were delighted to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to The Royal Marsden to open our new Oak Centre for Children and Young People. The centre is named after the Oak Foundation which generously donated £10 million towards the cost of the building and we would like to thank the trustees for their immense generosity.

These brand new facilities,

together with state-of-the art technology, provide increased capacity to help us meet growing demand and provide an environment for young patients which meets all their health, educational and social needs.’

Chairman Ian Molson said: ‘It is thanks to the support of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and Teenage Cancer Trust that we have been able to raise the funds to help The Royal Marsden provide worldclass care for young patients in

a wonderful new environment.’

The Duke and Duchess spent nearly two hours speaking to patients and staff in the centre and were clearly impressed with the new facilities. The Duke of Cambridge recalled his memories of the old Children’s Unit when he did his work experience there nearly six years ago. He said he was honoured to open the new £18 million centre, and was delighted to see the final results.

Oak Centre for Children and Young People is one of the largest comprehensive children’s cancer centres in Europe with 31 beds. It will see almost 600 inpatients and more than 5,000 day patients every year. The centre also houses a worldleading drug development programme, ensuring our young patients benefit from new cancer treatment and drugs that have been developed in our laboratories.

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity raises money to help provide world-class care for cancer patients, and to support the hospital’s pioneering work in cancer research.

The Affordable Art Fair adds Hampstead to its London portfolio

T

he Affordable Art Fair has added a brand new fair to its London portfolio - AAF Hampstead. Taking place on Hampstead Heath from 27th-30th October, the week after the well-loved and established AAF Battersea, and complemented by a fantastic programme of workshops and events, it is set to be a big hit in North London. Ninety galleries will be exhibiting an exciting mix of well-known and emerging artists and it promises to be a fun day out for both art lovers and families alike.

Originating in London over a decade ago, AAF is now a global success with fairs taking place in nine major cities around the world. With a record-breaking number of visitors from all over the capital attending the AAF Battersea fairs each year, founder Will Ramsay saw the demand for another London-centric, pocket-friendly fair, Ramsay says: ‘AAF’s winning formula is simple - a relaxed, unstuffy environment for people to feel

confident to explore and learn about contemporary painting, sculpture, photography and original print from a huge variety of both established and emerging artists all priced between £40 to £4,000.’

ondon Transport Museum is hosting a celebration of the works of one of Britain’s most successful and best loved illustrators - John Burningham.

His career was kick started with a poster commission from London Transport in 1960 although he later found fame as a celebrated children’s book author and illustrator.

He has written over 60 illustrated books which include Borka: The Adventures of a Goose with No Feathers, Mr Gumpy’s Outing and Granpa; Burningham has received 42 o c t o b e r 2 0 1 1

many honours including two Kate Greenaway medals.

We know you were born in London, would you tell us one of your favourite first memories of London.

I think this is always a tricky one as there are so many things you remember from childhood but I distinctly remember with a smidgen of nostalgia being taken to see “Annie” in the West End and just being transported to another World. I adored the show and it started my life long passion of going to as much theatre as I can… I think I still have the programme in the attic!

What is it about London that you love the most?

Having grown up in London I think it’s the hustle and bustle of City life that I just love. I love watching people always hurrying along imagining what there life is all about.

I love Black cabs and Red buses. I also try to get to one of our amazing Parks atleast twice a week – just having these on our doorstep is a real wonder and privilege. october2011

Do you think London has changed vastly since you were in your teens?

For sure it has become faster paced. The people seem to be more stressed in general but then you find yourself chancing a smile at a stranger and being rewarded with an equally big smile back and suddenly it all seems ok. The traffic seems to be exactly the same just less consistant! There also seem a lot more Italians – maybe there always was but now I am married to one I am more aware!

What’s your favourite park in London and why?

I suppose I would have to choose Hyde Park and Kensington gardens as it’s the one I go to the most. I feel very safe in both parks which cannot be said for others.

The Gardens are tended to immaculately and my youngest daughter is mad for the horses that are always around in some form. I like watching the Cavallary training there too it makes me feel rather British. Then of course you have the Serpentine and Peter Pan – what more can you want!

What is your favourite restaurant?

I don’t have a favourite but have a handful that we alternate.

I love Eleven on Park Walk, Chelsea possibly because its next door to my Gallery, The Little Black Gallery (www. thelittleblackgallery.com). They have sensational truffle scrammbled eggs. Amaya on Motcomb Street for Indian, Oliveto on Elizabeth street for Pizza, Hunan on Pimlico Green for Asian/Chinese fusion, CUT @ 45 Park Lane for meat (it’s the new Wolfgang Puck restaurant) and ofcourse Nobu- either! For a girls salad light lunch it would have to be 202 Westbourne Grove – or Jaks on Walton Street always both delicious.

Where do you like to shop for food in London?

Food shopping is quite a regular event and I must admit I try to steer towards local smaller shops and ideally Organic where I can. My local fish monger The Cheslea Fishmonger on Chelsea Green is a constant and the boys are gorgeous.

Likewise I tend to make an effort to go to The Wyndham House butcher on Fulham Rd or Lidgates in Notting Hill for my meat. Wholefoods is more of a treat than a regular haunt.

Do you have some tips on the best places to shop for new designers and vintage clothes?

Clothes shopping is not sadly my priority anymore – two girls to shop for makes it all rather expensive. That said I do try to buy a few pieces here and there when I go to Paris or Milan. As the buyers are different but if I must I like Paul and Joe on Sloane Street. Vintage I leave to my daughter who has a wonderful eye for those pieces. Donna Ida for jeans, Miu Miu and Ralph Lauren anywhere! Bottega Venetta when I have won the pools!

We know that you love photography and we are very interested in your Art Gallery would you tell us a little about it?

I have been a hungry collector since the age of about 18 – when I was introduced to Tim Jefferies of Hamiltons. He made be aware of Horst, Helmut Newton, Robert Doisneau and Norman Parkinson! All those photographs are still in our family collection.

I am obsessed with photographs of all description but I do lean towards people rather than the abstract. I would love a giant David Lachappelle and a Guy Bourdin – hopefully not too far off. My Chris Levine’s are a source of constant joy. The Little Black Gallery is an amazing outlet I have been lucky enough to become a part of with my partners, Ghislain Pascal. We are very lucky to represent the Estate of Bob Carlos Clarke. My long friendship with the maestro of the celebrity photograph Terry O”neill has been a wonderful addition to our reputation. This coming year we are hugely proud to be having the first mixed show of Chris Levine’s work – he is currently also on tour with

What is your favourite place of interest in London?

I love to walk everywhere and I adore taking in new areas of London that I have never lived in. So Shoreditch for example excited me and I love heading North of the Park and seeing Hampstead Heath. London is a wealth of visual treats I just suggest getting out there and looking around..

The National Portrait Gallery and next year has a show at The MOMA in New York. We take the curating part very seriously and try to keep our eyes open for the quirky. We celebrate our 3rd year in November and I think we are doing pretty well.

How do you decide which artists you will display?

Thus far it has been a group decision however sometime one of us pushes for someone new that maybe one of us is a little more reluctant. On the whole we are in agreement. Having had Norman Parkinson and Litchfield was pretty much a group YES‌ We have a

pretty exciting new slate for the coming year with a couple of curve ball photographers thrown in for excitement!

What are you working on now and what have you got coming up?

The Gallery is my main focus and priority. I love being hands on and we have so many ideas and plans for its future. I also am a buyer for The Gift-Library.com and that seems to help me with my shopping fix‌Lots of other TV bits and pieces tie in nicely with my writing/ interviews I continue to produce for Hello Magazine october2011

A history of trafalgar square

T

rafalgar Square’s 200-year history has been one of constant change, as the original layout has been modified and updated.

From the 14th to the late 17th century, much of the area occupied by Trafalgar Square was the courtyard of the Great Mews stabling, which served Whitehall Palace.

The northern area of the square had been the site of the King’s Mews since the time of Edward I, while the southern end was the original Charing Cross, where the Strand from the City met Whitehall, coming north from Westminster. As the midpoint 54 o c t o b e r 2 0 1 1

between these twin cities, Charing Cross is to this day considered the heart of London, from which all distances are measured.

In the early 18th century, the mews was put out of use by the Royal Household and the area was cleared. In the 1821 the Prince Regent engaged the architect, John Nash to set about developing a new concept for the space as part of his improvement plans for London. He wanted to develop ‘a new street from Charing Cross to Portland Place forming an open square in the Kings Mews opposite Charing Cross’. He wanted the space to be a cultural space, open to the public.

In 1830, it was officially named Trafalgar Square. The name commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), a British naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars. The original name was to have been “King William the Fourth’s Square”, but George Ledwell Taylor suggested the name “Trafalgar Square”.

Throughout the 1800s, the area in and around the square went through some major changes. In 1832 work began on the National Gallery, based on designs by the architect William Wilkins. Once this work was completed, in 1838, Sir Charles Barry (architect of the Palace of Westminster) presented a plan for the development of Trafalgar Square. Barry’s proposal included an upper terrace next to the National Gallery and a lower level square, linked by a staircase and including the Nelson memorial statue and two fountains. All the stonework was of Aberdeen granite. The estimated budget, excluding paving and sculptures, was £11,000.

In 1843 Nelson’s Column, representing Horatio Nelson, the vice admiral who commanded the British Fleet at Trafalgar, was designed by William Railton, and erected, and in 1845, the fountains were built. Sir Edwin Landseer designed the bronze lions that were placed on guard at the base of Nelson’s Column in 1867. In 1876, the Imperial Measures - detailing inches, feet, yards, links, chains, perches and poles - were set into

Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) on 8th May 1945, the date when the Allies during the Second World War celebrated the defeat of Nazi Germany. Trafalgar Square was filled with a crowd wanting to hear the formal announcement by Sir Winston Churchill that the war was over. The square was also used as a place of celebration by people travelling there from all over the country. On 8th May 2005 the BBC held a concert to celebrate the 60th anniversary of VE Day. Since World War II, a Christmas ceremony has been held since 1947. A Norway Spruce (or sometimes a fir) is given by Norway’s capital Oslo and presented as London’s Christmas tree, as a token of gratitude for Britain’s support during World War II. (Besides the general war support, Norway’s Prince Olav, as well as the country’s government, lived in exile in London throughout the war.) As part of the tradition, the Lord Mayor of Westminster visits Oslo in the late autumn to take part in the felling of the tree, and the Mayor of Oslo then comes

They were originally fed by water pumped from an artesian well by a steam engine sited behind the National Gallery. In the late 1930s it was decided to replace the stone basins and the pump.

The new fountains were built to a design by Sir Edwin Lutyens at a cost of almost £50,000 The old fountains were bought for presentation to the Canadian government, and are now in Ottawa and Regina. The present fountains are memorials to Lord Jellicoe (western side) and Lord Beatty (eastern side). Further restoration work became necessary and was completed by May 2009.

At the corners of the square are four plinths. Three of them have statues: in the northeast corner George IV by Sir Francis Chantrey (originally intended for the top of the Marble Arch); in the southeast Major-General Sir Henry Havelock by William Behnes (1861), and in the southwest General Sir Charles James Napier by George Cannon Adams(1855). In 2000, the then Mayor of London Ken Livingstone controversially expressed a desire to see the two generals replaced with statues of people “ordinary Londoners would know” The fourth plinth in the northwest corner was originally intended for a statue of William IV but the funds for the statue could not be raised, in part due to the King’s unpopularity. Since 1998 the plinth has been used

The square was once famous for its feral pigeons, and feeding them was a popular activity. The desirability of the birds’ presence was contentious: their droppings disfigured stonework, and the flock, estimated at its peak to be 35,000, was considered a health hazard. In 2005, the sale of bird seed in the square was stopped and other measures introduced to discourage the pigeons, including the use of trained birds of prey, and bylaws banning the feeding of pigeons.

Since its construction, Trafalgar Square has been seen as a centre of national democracy and protest.

Rallies and demonstrations are frequently held at weekends on a range of political, religious and general issues. The Mayor supports this democratic tradition, and gives access to the square for such causes .

Trafalgar Square is owned by the Queen in Right of the Crown, and managed by the Greater London Authority, while Westminster City Council owns the roads around the square, including the pedestrianised area of the North Terrace.

A new LED lighting system has also been installed to reduce the cost of lighting maintenance. The new lighting has been designed with the London 2012 Summer Olympics in mind and projects many different combinations of colours on to the fountains.The new lighting system has a much lower energy requirement and will reduce its carbon footprint by around 90%. october2011

A history of Chiswick

T

he name “Chiswick” is of Old English origin meaning “Cheese Farm” and originates from the riverside meadows and farms that are thought to have supported an annual cheese fair on Dukes Meadows up until the 18th century. Chiswick was first recorded C.1000 as Ceswican.

Chiswick was historically an ancient parish in the county of Middlesex, with an agrarian and fishing economy.

Having good communications with London from an early time the area became a popular country retreat, and as part of the suburban growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries the population of Chiswick significantly expanded. With neighbouring Brentford, it became a municipal borough in 1932 and has formed part of Greater London since 1965 when London expanded into the surrounding urban areas.

Chiswick grew up as a fishing village around St. Nicholas Church on Church Street. The parish also included Strand-on-the-Green, Little Sutton and Turnham Green. By the early 19th century the fishing industry in and around Chiswick declined as the growth of industry and the invention of the flush toilet were causing pollution in the river. Fish began to die out and the river became unsuitable as a spawning ground. Locks upstream also made the river impassable by migratory fish such as salmon and shad.

From the 18th century onwards the High Road became built up with inns and large houses.

Fuller, Smith & Turner P.L.C. and its predecessor companies have been brewing beer on its Chiswick site for over 350 years. The original brewery was in the gardens of Bedford House in Chiswick Mall, and these premises later expanded to the present site nearby. The company still brews real ales and owns public houses.

In 1822, the Royal Horticultural Society leased 33 acres of land between the now Sutton Court Road and Duke’s Avenue.

was reduced to 10 acres in the 1870s, and the lease was terminated when the Society’s garden at Wisley, Surrey, was set up in 1904.

Some of the original pear trees still grow in the gardens of houses built on the site.

Suburban building began in Gunnersbury in the 1860s and in Bedford Park, on the borders of Chiswick, in 1875: the latter, designed largely by Richard Norman Shaw, was described by Nikolaus Pevsner as the first place “where the relaxed, informal mood of a market town or village was adopted for a complete speculatively built suburb”.

Chiswick had two well-known theatres in the 20th century. The Chiswick Empire (1912 to 1959) was at 414 Chiswick High Road. It had 2,140 seats, and staged music hall entertainment, plays, review, opera, ballet and an annual Christmas pantomime.

The Q Theatre (1924 to 1959) was a small theatre opposite Kew Bridge station.

It staged the first works of Terence Rattigan and William Douglas-Home and many of its plays went on to the West End. Today, the Tabard Theatre on Bath Road, is known for new writing and experimental work.

During World War II, Chiswick suffered a number of bombing raids. Both incendiary and high explosive bombs were used, and there was also damage from falling anti-aircraft shells that had not exploded as intended. From June 1944, V-1 flying bombs started to fall; The first V-2 Rocket to hit London fell on Chiswick in September 1944, killing three people and causing extensive damage to surrounding trees and buildings. There is a memorial where the rocket fell on Staveley Road. There is also a War Memorial at the east end of Turnham Green.

CHISWICK HOUSE

Chiswick House is a magnificent neo-Palladian villa set in beautiful historic gardens.

Built by the third Earl of Burlington in 1729 to showcase his art collection and to enthral his guests, the house continues to display many spectacular works of art and provides a stunning venue for entertaining.

The history of the house is complex and intriguing and there are a wealth of stories to tell and works of art to admire.

During the second half of the nineteenth century the house was occupied by a series of eminent tenants, including the Prince of Wales, but by 1892 the building had become a mental institution and entered a prolonged period of decline.

In the 1950s Chiswick House was passed to the Ministry of Works, via Middlesex Council, and a much needed restoration campaign was undertaken. The villa has been cared for by English Heritage who, with the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust, set up in 2005, embarked on a major restoration programme for the gardens which is now complete. www.chgt.org.uk

et within glorious Capability Brown designed grounds, Stoke Place was built as a family residence in 1690 by Patrick Lamb. East and west wings were added over time and the property retains the warmth of a family home with an emphasis on service, glamour and comfort.

A Queen Anne, 17th Century manor house, Stoke Place was the first in the family of Dhillon Group transformations. Reworkings of historical country properties into fashionable urban retreats soon followed with two now critically acclaimed nearby retreats. The Olde Bell and The Crown are historical modern coaching inns re-imagined by Isle Crawford, loved by metropolitan guests and locals alike and regularly patronised by an A-list clientele. Recent patrons have included Hollywood legend Dustin Hoffman, Rachel Weisz and Judi Dench. Heston Blumenthal dines regularly at The Olde Bell and off-duty rock stars are frequently spotted taking some much needed R&R and country air during weekends alongside a fashionable crowd that includes fashion designer Erdem, Sarah Shotton (creative director of Agent Provocateur) and fashion’s fierce troubadour Grace Woodward.

Stoke Place’s décor was re-worked to provide luxurious adult comforts for stylish getaways. When planning the re-design of Stoke Place, the design manifesto hinged on creating comfortable, informal splendour with quirky but stylish reworks of the traditional country house. The group’s overriding objective was to create a rural outpost that was luxurious yet affordable, stylish but groovy. Guests approaching Stoke Place from the sweeping gravel driveway would be forgiven for mistaking it as a fussy, traditional English country hotel. It is anything but. Inside it’s an eclectic mix of old and

new, elegant Victorian rooms have been given a 21st century makeover with contemporary furnishings, colour and detail.

Hip design touches and rural glamour abound at Stoke Place, cutting through any daunting aristocratic grandness. The hotel boasts a unique and colourful labyrinth of rooms and lounge spaces. Stylish afternoon teas, cocktail hour drinks, inventive menus for stylish celebrations and indulgent pampering sessions in the beauty room are available to guests and locals. Stoke Place also hold quarterly decadent house parties organised by methodical dreamer and the doyenne of the UK party circuit, Polly Betton. These now legendary soirees took their inspiration from shindigs thrown by the Bright Young Things of the roaring twenties. White Blackbird parties at Stoke Place are creative, immersive themed events that fuse nightlife with performance and theatre, where Stoke Place becomes a magical world to be explored.

Guests arrive in suitably themed dress and seek out secret, hidden entertainment in the hotel’s glamorous suites. The main ballroom and common spaces feature dance, music, installation art and a midnight feast. Previous events have included Tweed, and Pyjama Party, where a mass staged pillow fight between revelers saw the Ballroom transformed into a cloud of feathers. For the Halloween bash, Black Widow’s Ball on the 28th October, the house will be transformed into a Hammer House experience where guests journey through an underworld of unseemly pleasures.

The next party, Bal en Blanc will take place on 2nd December and will see Stoke Place candlelit and styled as an 18th century French court. Guests can expect performances inside a lifesize snow globe, a midnight patisserie feast inspired by Marie

Antoinette and secret, hidden entertainment to be discovered by guests, dressed in Regency finery. A dressing up box and a team of make up artists will be on hand to create suitable period looks.

Even without the glamorous experiential parties, this country house experience comes with unexpected twists. Guests enter through the reception area and the classical country house picture deconstructs. Traditional rules are bent, the classic English country manor reinvented. The staircase is painted duck egg blue. A single wall is decorated with picture-less frames within frames, a witty reference to Stoke Place’s history as a former family home. Only 30 minutes from London, the hotel whispers style without ostentation, luxury without fuss. Furnishing includes bookcases in alcoves, overstuffed sofas and comfortable easy chairs.

The Garden Room, their fittingly current restaurant is no exception to Stoke Place’s eclectic rule. The garden has been brought into the lightfilled dining space in a vibrant, botanical palette of white and greens. Large eye level windows overlook 26 acres of Capability Brown designed gardens, ornamental lake and parklands. Statement leaf print wallpaper line the walls, complementing textures and patterns; natural wooden floorboards and white lacquered tables furnished with garden leaves and ferns complete the overall look.

The botanical-inspired interior is matched by the inventive culinary direction of head chef, Craig van der Meer. Craig came to Stoke Place from South Africa, via Langshott Manor; his food is modern British, inventive and seasonal. Service is relaxed, friendly and pitched at putting guests at ease.

Craig’s take on the traditional country house menu is served with an artful twist. Seasonal and locally sourced ingredients are used to create interesting versions of traditional fare.

Guide for a second year running, Stoke Place has been assigned a rating of four stars and has been awarded two rosettes for fine dining by the AA Guide. The two rosettes are an indication that Stoke Place has achieved ‘greater precision’ in its cooking and obvious attention to the quality and selection of ingredients and future accolades seem likely. The Garden Room has also been recommended for an additional third rosette.

Taking inspiration from radical innovations employed by Ferran Adria and Heston Blumenthal, Criag reworks classic dishes and combine immaculately cooked seasonal ingredients skillfully arranged into dainty mouthfuls, trickles, sprigs, foams and cubes. Well-known dishes are modified or embellished with surprise elements, foams or emulsions. Craig’s cooking is far from simple, although never overdone or confusing. Lobster tortellini is combined with baby fennel, Pernod jelly and bisque foam. Meanwhile, classic British fillet of beef is served with tongue, cheek, swede and borderlaise sauce and the classic British cheese board is reworked into a Reblochon ice cream, Perl Lâs, complete with sweet figs, red onion marmalade and manchego crisp.

Stoke Place joined only a handful of new entries to debut at this level, which in turn reflected a ‘dedicated, focused approach to cooking, good classical skills and high quality ingredients.’

Aimed at cosmopolitan guests and food enthusiasts, Stoke Place takes the traditionally stiff country house experience and instills it with metropolitan cool. An increasing number of homes in the area now boast basements. So, why are residents choosing to look down when it comes to looking up?

he local housing market has lost the buoyancy that once made selling smaller and buying bigger a wise investment. Now, a larger home is not, automatically, a guarantee of a more impressive capital gain when you resell. Add stamp duty on property transactions – 4% on properties between half and one million, 5% on million-plus homes – to agents and legal fees, and moving becomes an expensive proposition even before you’ve found the money or taken on a mortgage to pay for the extra space.

Yet the need for bigger homes has not gone away. Children are still being born, people choosing to work from home and ageing parents need to be cared for. The answer to the question of how to get more space? seems to be – judging by the excavations seen on our streets – “Dig down”.

With an impressive track record of basements built and 100 plus directly employed staff, Cranbrook Basements is a leader in exploiting the land beneath our feet. Now in its 25th anniversary year it has excavated, built and equipped kitchens, media rooms, storage spaces (especially for wine!), family rooms, bathrooms, libraries, gyms, granny flats, bedrooms, studies, even swimming pools. A day spent with the company, visiting sites and talking with staff and specialists, convinces you that this is a company that loves what it does, and does it very well.

Providing basement space is a serious business that starts with a site visit and definition of the customer’s requirements and budget.

It then moves on to planning considerations – what will and won’t be possible under local regulations, and looks at architectural and engineering solutions. Soil analysis is required and if the property adjoins another, a party wall agreement is drawn up.

A study determines whether gas, electricity, water, drainage and sewerage need to be rerouted. Questions of access for spoil removal and materials delivery have to be resolved. Finally, fully costed plans and work schedules are drawn up in agreement with the homeowner before planning approval is obtained. At every stage in the pre-build process Cranbrook employs its own specialists; land, building and quantity surveyors, architects, interior designers, structural engineers and planning experts.

One specialty at Cranbrook is light. “Every prospective client,” explains Kevin O’Connor, MD, “is worried about light.

They all want as much daylight as possible, as little artificial light as is necessary. In all the years we’ve been building down, we’ve used or even invented different techniques to bring natural light into basement areas and disguise electric lighting when its use can’t be avoided. And when we’ve completed a project, we’ve never had a customer who hasn’t been happy with the lighting solution; nowadays living in a basement is not like living on the Central Line. After a few days people don’t even notice that they’re living underground.”

“Another common concern,” Mr O’Connor continues. “is structural security. Effectively, building a basement or extending a cellar means that a building’s foundations are under threat.

It’s an area where we simply can’t take short cuts. Over the years we’ve learnt more about how London’s houses were built than anyone else. Absolutely our prime consideration is how to secure, reinforce or replace existing foundations.

We’re confident that on every project we’ve undertaken, the house is more solid after our work than it was before.”

When building does begin, once again Cranbrook only uses its own staff. From labourers to craftsman, the company wants things done the right way, with staff it has recruited and trained and who take pride in their work. As one client said to Kevin O’Connor “Everyone was a pleasure to deal with and you should justifiably be proud of your professionalism and skills – even our neighbours liked you!”

To return to where we started – investing in property – how does building down compare with moving up? The money spent on enlarging an existing home all goes into that home, and is reflected in the price realised when the property is resold. Those who trade up by buying bigger spend capital on stamp duties and professional fees that they will never recover. And, as is often noted, moving house is the one of the most stressful thing families ever experience.

T

here has always been synergy between the fashion industry and interior design. We have always reflected one another, and recently the similarities are more marked.

It’s partly the tough financial times we are in. When there’s stringency, we seek investment pieces, iconic design that has lasting appeal.

From Ralph Lauren to Gucci, the colours on the catwalk are jewel colours: amethyst, emerald, ruby, garnet. Look at Dior, Pucci, Marc Jacobs, Versace and Chanel; here are the jades, burgundies, teals, oranges and citrine.

The same lavish palette is on trend in interiors too. Just as the style gurus tell you not to become trapped in black or boring in beige, colour is being celebrated by the interior design world for 2011/2012. Embellished prints and rich colours are being used to echo our growing penchant for opulence.

There’s even a correlation between fashion accessories and the backdrops used in interiors. On the catwalk, metallic leathers and burnished metal accessories, together with a smattering of precious stones predominate. This trend is entering our homes. Look for tie-backs, wallpapers and cushions, with crystal and metallic trims.

These trends have a life, however. When handled skilfully they won’t just last one season but will have a timeless appeal.

MELDING TRADITIONAL AND MODERN TECHNIQUES

In this design for a lounge and dining space a traditional approach has been used with a modern twist.

The inspiration for the colour and textiles for this suite has come straight out of a casket of precious stones: amethyst, sapphires, and rich gold.

The metallic wallpaper is from the Donghia range and gives a mellow effect as the light plays across it. Velvets from Nobilis and Stark fabric cover the sofas, armchair and cushions.

Our last interior trend is the Seventies looks that has been prevalent on the catwalks throughout the year and is now trickling down to interiors. This Living In Space project is a 5 storey home in Kensington, with part of the lower ground floor designed for the family to relax together. The colours that have been used here show how to reference that aesthetic but with a contemporary twist. Muted greens and oranges pop out against the neutral scheme of the rest of the space. ome years ago I had a large oil-on-canvas portrait of a lady, obviously of noble background and, in her day – that is of the later 17century – of considerable beauty. It was a fine example of a typical set piece of time; she is holding, rather dramatically, a scantily clad child who clearly wants to play with a small dog, and all are within swathes of luxurious drapes. In a well-preserved condition and in its original carved wood and gilt frame, it was not long before it caught the eye of someone who recognises a good picture. A deal was struck and the picture was delivered and hung in a place just made for it. And so began one of those great friendships that grow from common interests, although this buyer had enjoyed a few more interests than I, and I thought mine were varied enough. The customer and later to become friend was Laszlo Grof, a beguiling Hungarian who arrived in England in 1956 and without any English found employment first as a cook and then as a steel worker in an iron foundry, then into the mine as an explosives expert. Next came a spell as a furniture maker for Messrs Gomme in High Wycombe working on their famous ‘G Plan’ range, before turning his hand to running his own chicken farm. Settling down to become a qualified accountant Laszlo then went to Oxford to receive a degree with honours in history and has just completed his 8th

tour of Transylvania lecturing on his favourite subject, the history of cartography. In this field Laszlo is one of the leading authorities on ancient maps with a collection envied by museums and connoisseurs all over the world.

In the field of music he is a keen jazz buff and has been in the audience on several occasions when I’ve been playing, both with a small group and with the Sticky Wicket Big Band Drum Spectacular which we put on at The Stables in Wavenden,

the jazz Mecca established by the late and much lamented John Dankworth and his still-singing wife the fabulous Cleo Lane. So time spent with Laszlo is never silent and while visiting him last year I noticed and remarked on two contemporary paintings hanging in the same room as the lady with the child and dog. They had an instant appeal in the colourful and atmospheric representation of rural Hungary, full of light and shadows.

Impressionist movement had and still has an important influence in Hungary and a leading exponent is the artist Zoltan Grof – no relation – who painted the two I was admiring.

Zolton developed his skills and love of the medium as a student. The impressionist traditions of the famous Hungarian Nagybanya School which was founded as an artist’s colony in 1896 by Simon Hollosy, was the spark from which Zoltan developed his passion and skills to produce the vibrant and atmospheric paintings. In 2001 Zoltan was commissioned to create 24 large scale pictures for UNESCO, each commemorating the cities, towns and villages given World UNESCO status. His paintings are in numerous private collections in Hungary and abroad. At the time of writing we are holding an exhibition of Zoltan’s work in the grand Bedford Room at Woburn Abbey, the first we hope of many. We all meet fascinating people from time to time but there can be few occupations like mine where you have the opportunity to learn just how fascinating they really are and how they act as catalysts for other people with varying talents in such disparate fields.

The theme this year is a ‘touch of gold’ and there will be an item of gold included in each stocking. Hosted by radio and TV presenter Neil Fox, the event aims to raise £200,000. Individual tickets are £125 whilst tables are £1250.

If a good old sing song is what you need to get you into the festive mood the Guards Chapel Carol Concert is a must and will be held on Tuesday 6th December at the stunning Wellington Barracks. The concert, one of Macmillan’s most prestigious annual events, boasts a variety of musical performances, celebrity readings and congregational carols followed by a reception. Carols by Candlelight in St Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge, is another enormously popular event, taking place on Thursday 15th December. To support the 50,000 people who are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK, Breast Cancer Care is encouraging people nationwide to take part in the charity’s Pink Friday fundraising campaign throughout October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The campaign is to help fund vital services, such as the charity’s helpline, information points in hospitals and support groups for people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Getting involved with Pink Fridays is easy to do and can include anything from a tea break in the office with pink food and drinks, to a pink pamper party with your mates at home.

ondon’s only charitable private minor Casualty is proving a hit treating nearly 500 patients in the first month. Many patients at the newly opened urgent care centre in St Johns Wood, have been children.

Casualty First, London’s only self pay walk in urgent care centre to treat patients from the age of one year for minor injuries, accidents and illnesses, was officially opened by Holby City actress Laila Rouass at a ceremony attended by 300 people.

The launch of Casualty First came as NHS A&Es struggle to cope. Patients at Casualty First are seen almost immediately in the luxurious centre and seen by highly experienced doctors.

Casualty First’s Clinical Director Andre van Nierop said: “Demand has exceeded all our expectations.

Patients are also coming from much further afield than we expected to avoid NHS waits.

But despite the high number of patients, waiting times have not been more than five minutes or so. We

are pleased to be providing the community with what is obviously a much needed service. We will expand the service to keep up with demand. It is also wonderful that every time a patients comes to Casualty First our onsite Hospice benefits as well.”

I work in a job that involves dealing with clients on a daily basis, so my appearance is important. I was increasingly aware of the lines on my forehead and between my eyes.

I always felt as though I looked angry, and older than I was, even though I am only in my early 30’s. I approached Sister Kay Greveson her clinic within Aquarius Spa, Hampstead, about two months ago as I had been recommended to her by a friend. I was initially nervous as I have never had any sort of treatment like that before. I was worried about having the injections and what I would look like afterwards but Kay put my mind at ease immediately. We had a detailed chat about what results I wanted from the treatment; she took a medical history and some photographs. Kay explained that Botox® is a safe, naturally occurring protein that works by blocking nerve

It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! signals to specific muscles that cause facial expression; relaxing the muscle and making the treated area smoother and less wrinkled. She gave me the option of using a ‘numbing’ local anaesthetic cream, which I took. Despite being nervous, I did not find the procedure bad at all. Kay talked me through each step and made sure I was comfortable throughout.

She was very gentle and I hardly felt the injections; it certainly wasn’t as bad as I had

imagined. She explained that it would take between 2 and 14 days for the full results to be visible and advised me to come back after this time so she could check on the result and have a ‘dose adjustment’ of treatment if required. It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! In the end I did not need more treatment as I was more than pleased with the results. I have a natural look and still have facial expression but no lines!! Botox® is not permanent, lasting only three to four months, after which, the lines that were there prior to treatment slowly return. I will definitely have it again when the time comes as it has made me feel so much more confident with my appearance.

I feel that I look more relaxed and don’t have an ‘angry’ look from frowning all of the time.

The new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet which is back after a nine year absence and in better shape than ever.

Prices for the new model range from £20,720 (RRP OTR) to £26,595.

First shown earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, the new two-door, four-seater, front-engined soft top joins the range alongside the Eos hard-top convertible. It is fitted as standard with an electrically-powered fabric roof which can be lowered in just 9.5 seconds including on the move at speeds up to around 18 mph. No separate roof cover is needed, contributing to the very rapid opening time, and resulting in less bootspace

intrusion and meaning that even with the roof down, there is 250 litres of available space.

The Golf Cabriolet is around 20 cm shorter than the Eos, measuring 4,215 mm in length, 1,424 mm in height and 1,779 mm wide. The 2,578 mm wheelbase (same as Golf hatchback) ensures there is plenty of interior space for all four passengers, while a 50:50 split/folding rear seat and Easy-Entry function ensure maximum practicality and good access to the rear.

At the front, the grille and bonnet make the new soft-top model clearly identifiable as a Golf; however from the heavily raked windscreen back, it’s all new, giving a sportier appearance. At the rear, new lights plus a deep crease in the bootlid are distinctive design features.

What can’t be seen from the outside are the differences that have been incorporated under the skin. In changing the hatchback to a soft-top, modifications were made to ensure that safety, comfort and refinement were not compromised in the cabriolet version. These include reinforced window frames and structural modifications to the underbody, side panels, cross-members and doors to endow the new car with an extremely high level of torsional rigidity.

Also benefiting refinement is the design of the fabric roof which has an additional exterior skin, as well as new window and door seals.

Safety has always been a Golf attribute and the Cabriolet is no different in this respect. An active rollover protection system is employed, ABS, ESP and front and side head/thorax airbags are also all standard.

The new Golf Cabriolet will be available with a choice of three engines: a 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS and a 1.6-litre TDI 105 PS. A further petrol and two diesels will be offered later in the year. DSG automatic transmission will be offered while BlueMotion Technology modifications will be applied to the diesel engines to ensure high efficiency and low emissions.

ou can sample four of the world’s most renowned Michelinstarred chefs’ cuisine at the Savoy.Tickets are now on sale for a truly unique and inspirational charity evening of Art and Food, which will be held at the internationallyfamous Savoy Hotel.

Four of the UK’s greatest chefs: Heston Blumenthal (The Fat Duck & Dinner at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park), Jason Atherton (Pollen Street Social), Brett Graham (The Ledbury) and Lisa Allen (Northcote Manor) will be creating a menu to celebrate 25 years of PAC (formerly PostAdoption Centre). PAC (formerly Post-Adoption Centre) based in Kentish Town, London has been a pioneer of adoption support services since 1986.Over 25 years, PAC has helped with almost 100,000 requests for help. PAC’s expert counsellors are on hand five days a week to offer support and guidance to anyone affected by adoption, as well as provide consultation with professionals working in the field. In the past year, their Advice Line handled around 1,000 calls from throughout the UK. They have even been contacted from as far away as the Cayman Islands & Australia!

Not only will the evening allow guests to sample amazingly creative food, but there will also be an opportunity to purchase artworks by some of the world’s most coveted artists in an auction conducted

by Lord Dalmeny, Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s.

The artists range from Haroon Mirza - who recently won a ‘Silver Lion’ at Venice Biennale to Ken Howard, Gordon Cheung, Maggi Hambling, James Hart Dyke, James A. Holdsworth, Patrick Hughes, Julian Opie, William Stein, Estelle Thompson and Norman Ackroyd as well as three artists who have firsthand experience of adoption: Russell Young, Claerwen James and Tony Heywood.

The Gourmet evening is the brainchild of Guardian food writer and ‘Great British Menu’ judge, Matthew Fort, who had the support of PAC almost 25 years ago.

He said: “What a prospect dishes by some of the country’s most creative chefs; works from some of the country’s finest artists - to raise money for a charity that means a great deal to me. It’s going to be a mouth-watering, eye-opening evening!”

There will also be a silent auction, which will include lots such as 1 hour private flower arranging tuition for 2 with Shane Connolly (appointed florist to HRH Prince of Wales); 7 night stay in St. Lucia at Cap Maison; a day at Cheltenham Races for 2; a place on one of the Europeanguided Art Tours in the 2012 brochure from the Ultimate Travel Company; dinner with Tom Parker Bowles and a signed England football shirt.
