2013 marks the 50th Anniversary of Lamborghini. The company’s history is one of challenges and uncontested records, set by its founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini, who decided to create the world’s most beautiful, and powerful super sports cars.

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, is a private Club founded in 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. Its first ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon. In 1875 lawn tennis, a game introduced by major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier and originally called Sphairistike, was added to the activities of the Club. In the spring of 1877 the Club was re-titled ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signalled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship.

The award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is a London landmark, with one of the largest auditoria in London, and the oldest, professional, permanent outdoor theatre in Britain – a firm fixture of summer in the city, providing a cultural hub in the beautiful surroundings of a Royal Park. Its steeply raked auditorium is one of the largest in London with 1,240 seats, yet those who attend say it is one of the most intimate. Each night an incomparable atmosphere is created by the buzz of people enjoying their theatre-going in every sense: friends setting up hampers on the picnic lawn, filling their glasses with wine or drinking Pimms in the bar as the fairy lights twinkle in the trees.

The Ferrari, personally selected by Beatles singer/songwriter John Lennon as his first car, is the latest important motor car to join the line-up for the Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester, West Sussex, on Friday 12th July.

Bonhams to sell John Lennon’s first car... a Ferrari

T

The 1965 330GT 2+2 Coupé was bought by the Beatles singer for £6,500 on the day he passed his driving test. It is estimated to realise between £180,000 and £220,000 at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on 12th July 2013

he Ferrari, personally selected by Beatles singer/songwriter John Lennon as his first car, is the latest important motor car to join the line-up for the Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester, West Sussex, on Friday 12th July.

In February 1965 The Beatles recorded Ticket to Ride – a song that would become one of their biggest hits, topping both the UK and US singles charts. By happy coincidence, that same month, the news that Lennon had passed his driving test made headlines across the country. Within hours, the road outside the security gates of his Kentwood home in Weybridge, Surrey, was jammed with Maseratis, Aston Martins, and the Jaguar E-type, as luxury car dealerships – hungry for business – spotted an opportunity to secure a high-profile client.

The singer, by then a father to 22-month-old Julian by his first wife Cynthia, strolled out to inspect the cars and chose a right-hand drive Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Coupé finished in Azzuro blue paint, with a blue interior, priced at £6,500 (equivalent to just over £110,000 in today’s money).

Motor vehicles were to become a passion for Lennon, no more so than this Ferrari, which he used for the best part of three years, until October 1967… covering more than 20,000 miles.

By the late 1980s, this special car was with the famous Modena Ferrari dealership, from where it was acquired by its current owner. Painted red

and separated from its number plate, it was then lovingly restored to its original specification.

Offered for sale by Bonhams with its original DUL 4C registration restored by the DVLA, this matching-numbers* motor car is one of only 500 of its type built and is estimated to realise between £180,000 and £220,000 at the auction.

It is offered for sale along with a history file documenting its provenance and restoration, which also includes correspondence with Lennon.

Sholto Gilbertson, Senior Specialist in the Bonhams Motor Car Department, said: “It is a wonderful commentary on the early excitement generated by Beatlemania that John Lennon didn’t even have to leave his house to buy his first car. We are delighted to be offering a car associated with such an icon of contemporary popular culture at the first of our Goodwood series of auctions in 2013. Already our Festival of Speed Sale is shaping up to potentially eclipse last year’s record-breaking total.” *A matching-numbers motor car is one in which the numbers stamped on the engine and the chassis match, and are the same as those originally fitted by the factory during construction.

This season includes six new productions in 37 main-stage performances.

It builds on Opera Holland Park’s winning formula – established under the dedicated leadership of James Clutton (Producer) and Michael Volpe (General Manager) – of staging a mixture of much-loved verismo treasures alongside rarer repertoire. This year’s season includes Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Bizet’s Les pêcheurs de perles, and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. This year’s rarity is the most ambitious large-scale production in OHP’s history; a steamy melodrama by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari entitled I gioielli della Madonna (The Jewels of the Madonna).

New for 2013 is the eagerly anticipated world-premiere of a speciallycommissioned new opera for families based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, with music by Will Todd.

The City of London Sinfonia accompanies these productions, enjoying its 10th year as ‘house orchestra’. ‘Vivid playing from the orchestra under Peter Robinson puts the seal on an outstanding company achievement’ said The Daily Telegraph of Falstaff in 2012.

The season opens with a double bill to get the passions racing: two hot-blooded verismo operas with robust roles for fine actor-singers including Peter Auty, tenor, and Stephen Gadd, baritone, directed by Stephen Barlow and designed by Yannis Thavoris. In the first, Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, a savage tale of love and obsession in a Sicilian village, impressive soprano Gweneth-Ann Jeffers makes her role debut as Santuzza.

This vengeful village girl, now pregnant by Turiddu, determines to steal him back from the other woman, with tragic consequences.

I gioielli della Madonna by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari is a tempting prospect for both fans and newcomers. A story of passion, sacrilege and madness among superstitious Neapolitan hoi polloi, composed in 1911, it proved enormously popular in its day. Maria Jeritza (and, later, Florence Easton) triumphed in it at the Met in a spectacular production in 1926, prompting The Times reviewer to bracket it with the young Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. This new production is in the capable hands of Martin LloydEvans, who is lucky to have as the impulsive young heroine Maliella the stunning young Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw, who won the 2012 Kathleen Ferrier Award. The cast also includes Olafur Sigurdarson (last year’s unforgettable Falstaff), the young Mexican tenor Joel Montero and respected British mezzo Diana Montague, a dignified Madame Larina in The Royal Opera’s new production of Eugene Onegin.

Opera Holland Park has long enhanced the creative and cultural atmosphere of the season with extra artistic events, and this year it welcomes back The Luna Cinema for three classic films, and a night of Silent Cinema complete with live orchestral accompaniment in August.

Tickets for Opera Holland Park 2013 range from £12 to £67.50. The Inspire initiative continues to bring in new audiences with thousands of seats at just £12. There are also free ticket schemes for older audiences (over 60) and for young people (9-18). Tickets for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland cost £3 for children and £8 for adults.

Spend Summer Evenings in the Parks From picnics and wine to bat hunting in Hyde Park, discover more about the natural world this summer

he Isis Education Centre in Hyde Park is a unique ecofriendly building, set in an acre of enclosed grounds. Not only is it the perfect place to children to learn about the outdoors, it also offer some events for adults to come and enjoy the tranquillity of nature, just a stone’s throw from Oxford Street. The Royal Parks Foundation is running the following events at the Isis Education Centre during the summer evenings: Water Lillies and Wine FRIDAY 22nd JUNE

Bring a picnic and some friends and relax in the private grounds of the Isis Education Centre. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful flower borders at this summer evening event and have your own sun terrace and access to the sunshine pond. Soak up the sunshine and discover all about the wonderful creatures that live in and around this hidden oasis in Hyde Park. Every guest gets a glass of wine or soft drink to enjoy as the shadows lengthen (with a cash bar available if you would like some more). Get the family wrapped up and join us as we try to find and identify the different bats that live in Hyde Park! Ramble in the Park: Bat Walk FRIDAY 30th AUGUST

Guided by the Isis Education Centre team, this is a wonderful chance to walk in Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park at night and see several different bat species – common pipistrelles, soprano pipistrelles, and noctules. Learn how they hunt and separate bat facts from bat fiction! Bat detectors are used so that bat echolocation calls are audible to the human ear. And because you are out in the Park on a summer’s night, owl calls may add to the atmosphere. Children over 8 years old are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Concessionary rates available – you will be asked to show proof of eligibility on the day. 7:30pm-9pm, £10£15, pre-booking required The Royal Parks Foundation delivers a wide ranging and accessible outdoor education programme at the Isis Education Centre in Hyde Park. The Championships Wimbledon 2013 MONDAY 24th JUNE – SUNDAY 7th JULY

Since the first Championships in 1877, Wimbledon has grown from its roots as a garden-party tournament to a Grand Slam tournament with a following of millions around the world.

T

he All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, is a private Club founded in 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. Its first ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon.

In 1875 lawn tennis, a game introduced by major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier and originally called Sphairistike, was added to the activities of the Club. In the spring of 1877 the Club was re-titled ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signalled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship.

The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen’s Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final.

The lawns at the Ground were arranged in such a way that the principal court was situated in the middle with the others arranged around it; hence the title ‘Centre Court’, which was retained when the Club moved in 1922 to the present site in Church Road opened

by King George V. The foresight of building the present stadium, designed to hold 14,000 people, did more to popularise the game worldwide than anything that has happened to date.However, in 1980 four new courts were brought into commission on the north side of the ground, which meant the

Centre Court was once more at the centre of the tournament. The opening of the new No. 1 Court in 1997 emphasised the description.

By 1882 activity at the Club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899 and the club has been known as ‘The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’ ever since.

Enter the Ladies In 1884 the Ladies’ Singles was inaugurated and, from an entry of 13 players, Maud Watson became the first champion. That same year, the Gentlemen’s Doubles was started, with the trophy donated by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club after the end of their doubles championship, played from 1879 to 1883.

Overseas Champions By the turn of the century Wimbledon had assumed an international character and in 1905 May Sutton of the United States became the first Champion from overseas when she won the Ladies’ Singles. She repeated her success in 1907, the year when Norman Brookes of Australia became the first Gentlemen’s Singles champion from overseas. Since that year, only two players from Great Britain, Arthur Gore and Fred Perry, have

managed to win the Men’s Singles while there have been five British Ladies’ Champions since Wimbledon moved to Church Road — Kitty McKane Godfree, Dorothy Round, Angela Mortimer, Ann Jones and Virginia Wade.

In 1980 Bjorn Borg of Sweden became the first player to win the Gentlemen’s Singles five times in the post-challenge round era; a feat replicated by Roger Federer between 2003 and 2007. In 1985 Boris Becker, aged 17, became the youngest player, the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. In 1987 Martina Navratilova of the United States became the first player to win the Ladies’ Singles six times in succession and in 1990 she attained the all-time record of nine victories in the event. Pete Sampras of the United States registered his seventh win in 2000 and in 2001, Goran Ivanisevic became the first wildcard to win the Gentlemen’s Singles.

Over the years the Club has constantly been aware of the need to provide facilities and ground improvements compatible with the pace and demand of modern day sport. Seldom has a year gone by without alteration to the ground or some organisational change taking place. In recent years, culminating in 2011, the momentum has increased and major works

Wimbledon 2013 Wimbledon 2013 will see the finest players from over 60 countries compete in the five main Championships events. In the second week of the Tournament, these players will be joined by Juniors, Veteran and Wheelchair competitors, playing in their own events on the Championships’ lawns. The All England Club, Wimbledon has announced that the total prize money at this year’s 127th Championships, will be £22.6million, an increase of 40% on 2012.

Changes to the Order of Play The Club tries to play all matches on the courts and days published.

However, occasionally it is necessary to switch a match from one court to another. This can be for a number of reasons. Some players remain involved in several events towards the end of The Championships and it may be necessary to move a match to avoid a clash. The Club tries to give similar rest periods between matches for players due to play each other.

Marin Alsop’s Last Night, Barenboim’s Ring Cycle and the returns of Nigel Kennedy and Doctor Who in the biggest ever broadcast Proms festival

he 2013 BBC Proms promises two months of many of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. Daniel Barenboim will conduct the first ever complete Wagner Ring Cycle at the Proms in one summer. His Staatskapelle Berlin will be joined by leading Wagner interpreters including Nina Stemme and Bryn Terfel (22nd – 28th July). With Promming tickets remaining at £5 for the eighth year running, audiences will be able to attend the complete Ring cycle for just £20. Marin Alsop makes Proms history by becoming the first woman to conduct the world-famous Last Night of the Proms. She will be joined by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and British violinist Nigel Kennedy, who appears earlier in the festival with a performance of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

Celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth continue with performances given by British orchestras and leading interpreters of his work: Tristan and Isolde with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Semyon Bychkov, Tannhäuser with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Donald Runnicles, and Parsifal with the Hallé under Sir Mark Elder. Fellow bicentenarian Giuseppe Verdi is celebrated with performances by two Italian orchestras, and the centenaries of two of the pre-eminent composers of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten and Witold Lutosławski, are marked across 18 Proms. Throughout the festival there will be a complete Tchaikovsky symphony cycle and a selection of some of the more rarely performed piano concertos including Malcolm Arnold’s Concerto for two pianos (three hands), Glazunov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Stravinsky’s Concerto for piano and wind instruments.

The BBC’s Doctor Who celebrates 50 YEARS on our screens with his third visit to the Proms while there are firsts with an Urban Classic Prom featuring Fazer, Laura Mvula and Maverick Sabre and a 6 Music Prom with Cerys Matthews, Laura Marling and The Stranglers.

There are two Proms dedicated to music from the big-screen: John Wilson returns to the Proms with his eponymous orchestra for an evening of Hollywood glamour and the BBC Concert Orchestra perform classic British and American film scores. From the ‘vocal play’ of a cappella group Naturally 7, the first Prom dedicated to Gospel music, a rare performance of Frank Zappa’s The Adventures of Greggery Peccary to Les Siècles performing Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring on period instruments, there is a range of diverse musical offerings.

Kennedy will be making a mad-dash to Hyde Park from the Royal Albert Hall stage and back again in his first appearance at the Last Night of the Proms!

The BBC Proms continues to celebrate youth with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain giving the first ever free main evening Prom performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. The National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America comes to the UK in its inaugural year with star American violinist Joshua Bell. The Proms Youth Choir, now in its second year, joins forces with the BBC Symphony Chorus on the First Night of the Proms to create a massed choir for Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony.

In addition to the six BBC performing groups who once again provide the backbone to the season, there is a stellar line-up of international orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Lorin Maazel, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under newly appointed Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra with Jonathan Nott, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with Mariss Jansons. Gracing the Royal Albert Hall’s stage for the first time are the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi.

Wimbledon Village Fair 2013 The Wimbledon Village Fair, part of the local area’s summer calendar, takes place on 22nd June, the Saturday before the Championships at Wimbledon begin.

I

t’s an enjoyable, traditional outdoor fair, with something for everyone.

Over 200 stalls & attractions gather together on beautiful Wimbledon Common Southside, bringing the community together for a fun day out whilst supporting The Wimbledon Guild. The Fair is the biggest annual fundraising event for the local charity, the money raised via sponsorships and donations will contribute to developing new services. The aim of the charity is to help local people throughout the London Borough of Merton to lead a better life by tackling poverty, supporting ageing and encouraging mental wellbeing.

Children’s favourite, Dora the Explorer will be travelling to SW19 especially to open this year’s Fair at 11am. Highlights this year include The Fun Dog Show – a wacky contest that celebrates man’s best friend, the new Champagne tent, delivering a touch of glamour and some bubbles to the event as well as mouthwatering delights available at The International and British Food Villages. The Jazz tent will be hosting great sounds and a variety of acts on the Fair main stage will be showcasing local talent including school choirs, dance and exercise groups.

The Horse Show is a highly respected and well-attended event.

The history includes the first Jazz club – Murray’s, which opened on Beak Street in 1913 to the Mods of the 1960s through to the Punks and New Romantics of the 1980s to today.

The 2013 Ashes Summer at Lord’s Cricket Ground THURSDAY 18th – MONDAY 22nd JULY 2013

The second Investec Ashes Test Match between England and Australia will be hosted at the prestigious home of world cricket, Lord’s from Thursday 18th – Monday 22nd July.

W

ith just a month to go until the most celebrated rivalry in cricketing history, Lord’s Cricket Ground is gearing up to meet the anticipated high demand for general tickets, and to book its iconic meetings and events spaces. Cricket fans will travel from all over the UK and the world to experience the pure excitement of The Ashes, and this truly iconic venue.

The term ‘Ashes’ was first used after England lost to Australia - for the first time on home soil - at The Oval on 29th August 1882.A day later, the Sporting Times carried a mock obituary of English cricket which concluded that: “The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”. The concept caught the imagination of the sporting public.

A few weeks later, an English team, captained by the Hon Ivo Bligh [later Lord Darnley], set off to tour Australia, with Bligh vowing to return with “the ashes”; his Australian counterpart, WL Murdoch, similarly vowed to defend them.

As well as playing three scheduled matches against the Australian national side, Bligh and the amateur players in his team participated in many social matches. It was after one such match, at the Rupertswood Estate outside Melbourne on Christmas Eve 1882, that Bligh was given the small terracotta urn as a symbol of the ashes that he had travelled to Australia to regain.

On the same occasion, he met his future wife - Florence Morphy - who was the companion to Lady Janet Clarke, mistress of Rupertswood, and governess to the Clark children.In February 1884, Bligh married Florence. Shortly afterwards, they returned to England, taking the urn - which Bligh always regarded as a personal gift - with them. It stayed on the mantelpiece at the Bligh family home - Cobham Hall, near Rochester in Kent - until Bligh died, 43 years later. At his request, Florence bequeathed the urn to MCC. Today, over 75 years on, the tiny, delicate and irreplaceable artefact resides in the MCC Museum at Lord’s. Each year, it is seen by tens of thousands of visitors, from all parts of the world.

In the 1990s, recognising the two teams’ desire to compete for an actual trophy, MCC commissioned - after discussions with the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia - an urn-shaped Waterford Crystal trophy. This was first presented to Mark Taylor after his Australian side emerged triumphant in the 1998-99 Test series against England.

Since then, the trophy has been presented to the winning captain at the end of each Test series between Australia and England.Most recently, it was presented to Andrew Strauss after England’s 3-1 victory over Australia in the 2010/11 Ashes Series.

Marylebone Cricket Club was founded in 1787 - a fact gathered from a poster for a cricket match in 1837 announcing MCC’s Golden jubilee. Before then, however, aristocrats and noblemen played

their cricket in White Conduit Fields at Islington, London. Like shooting and fox-hunting, cricket was considered a manly sport for the elite - with plenty of gambling opportunities to boot. (Around £20,000 was bet on a series of games between Old Etonians and England in 1751!) As London’s population grew, so did the nobility’s impatience with the crowds who gathered to watch them play. In pursuit of exclusivity, they decided to approach Thomas Lord, a bowler with White Conduit CC, and asked him to set up a new private ground. An ambitious entrepreneur, Lord was encouraged by Lord Winchilsea to lease a ground on Dorset Fields in Marylebone - the site of the modern Dorset Square.He staged his first match - Middlesex (with two of Berkshire and one of Kent) versus Essex (with two given men) - on 31st May 1787. Thus Marylebone Cricket Club was formed. A year later, it laid down a Code of Laws, requiring the wickets to be pitched 22 yards apart and detailing how players could be given out. Its Laws were adopted throughout the game - and MCC today remains the custodian and arbiter of Laws relating to cricket around the world.

After a short stay at Marylebone Bank, Regent’s Park, between 1811 and 1813, Lord’s moved to a new rural ground - previously the site of a duck pond - in St John’s Wood in 1814. It remains MCC’s home to this day. The ground was soon a major success and attracted hordes of players and spectators forcing Lord to build a Pavilion and refreshment stalls.

In 1805, the dukes and earls were keen to see their sons play cricket and so hired the ground for an Eton versus Harrow schools cricket match - the start of a world-famous, and on-going, tradition.

In 1825, when Thomas Lord was 70, he sold the ground to a Bank of England director, William Ward, for £5,000. Having provided the Marylebone Cricket Club with a ground for 38 years, Lord retired and then died seven years later - but his name lives on. That same year (1825), the Pavilion - housing scorecards, records and trophies - was destroyed in a fire. Work commenced immediately on a replacement, which opened the following year. At the time, the wicket was ‘prepared’ before a match by allowing sheep to come in and graze on the grass. However, the Club subsequently acquired its first mowing machine and appointed its first groundsman in 1864.

In the 1870s, MCC decided it wanted to get involved in county cricket, which was growing in popularity, and, in 1877, it invited Middlesex to adopt Lord’s as its county ground - an arrangement which continues over 125 years later.

MCC’s next step towards establishing itself as cricket’s most influential body involved its development of a relationship with Australia, where emigrants had started playing the game competitively. So in 1877 James Lillywhite and an England side boarded a steamer and travelled for eight weeks before playing Australia in the first official Test match - although it was not until 26 years later, in 1903, that MCC undertook official responsibility for England’s tours ‘down under’.

One of MCC’s most famous players, Dr WG Grace, from Gloucestershire, gave the Club even greater recognition through his monumental performances and stature. A painting of him by A.S. Wortley was presented to the Club in 1890 and still hangs in the famous Long Room.

In 1889, the foundation stone was laid for a new Pavilion, paid for by a £21,000 loan from William Nicholson, who had made his fortune from distilling gin. A year later it was opened in time for the new season. It is now a listed building and one of the most famous landmarks in world sport.

At the turn of the century, the Board of Control for Test Matches, the Advisory County Cricket Committee and the Imperial Cricket Conference were all set up to cater for the growth in domestic, imperial and other international cricket. These bodies existed until 1968 when there was a major reorganisation of cricket in England. Since MCC was a private club it could not receive public funds, so it set up a Cricket Council as the governing body of cricket and the Test and County Cricket Board (TCCB) to administer the professional game. It also converted its MCC Cricket Association into the National Cricket Association (NCA) to look after the recreational game. As a result, cricket started to receive financial help from the Government.

In the 1990s, the structure was changed again with the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) taking over responsibility for all cricket in England from the TCCB, NCA and Cricket Council. MCC is determined to ensure that Lord’s remains world-class, as well as world-famous. MCC has recently been investing even more money to ensure that Lord’s has both a unique historic appeal and truly state-of-the-art sporting facilities.

he annual festival West End LIVE – organised by Westminster City Council and the Society of London Theatre, in association with MasterCard – returns to Trafalgar Square for a weekend of free entertainment from some of London’s top theatre productions and performers.

Now in its 9th year, West End LIVE is the largest event of its type in the UK and the stage is set for another record breaking weekend as large crowds are expected to gather for special live performances from West End favourites Billy Elliot The Musical, Horrible Histories, Jersey Boys, Disney’s The Lion King, Mamma Mia!, Matilda The Musical, Les Misérables, Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Phantom of the Opera, Stomp, Thriller Live, Top Hat, War Horse, We Will Rock You, and Wicked appearing alongside newcomers Burn The Floor, The Bodyguard, A Chorus Line, The Color Purple, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage, From Here to Eternity, The Golden Voice, High Society, Let It Be, Limbo, Merrily We Roll Along, Once: A New Musical, Peter Pan: Never Ending Story, The Showstoppers and The Sound Of Music.

The event, which attracted over half a million people last year, is free and takes place on Saturday 22nd June 2012, 11am – 6pm and Sunday 23rd June 2013, 12pm – 6pm.

Visitors can also participate in a number of interactive activities, and explore exhibits from many of London’s most popular institutions including Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, Everything’s Rosie, Kids Week, Historic Royal Palaces, London Film Museum, The Science Museum, Theatre’s Trust, Pollock’s Toy Store and Forbidden Planet.

his year has been one of London’s coldest winters; strange or symbolic? 50 years ago, the winter of 1963 was nicknamed the “Big Freeze.” As it turned out 1963 London was one of the coolest years in modern history.

Lonnie Johnson, and Victoria Spivey. The Beatles & Stones ruled the London scene; Bob Dylan portrayed a folk singer in The Madhouse of Castle Street; and a radio play for the BBC Recorded at ‘The Shepherds Bush Empire’. It was a time of change and a great year to be young and in London.

All night dancing at the The Flamingo Club in Wardour Street; Charlie Watts left Alexis Korner’s ‘Blues Incorporated’ and performed his first concert with the Rolling Stones at the Ealing Jazz Club; Iconic London 60’s band ‘The Kinks’ formed in Muswell Hill; The Beatles played the ‘Swimming Baths’, Leyton, East London & Gaumont State Cinema, Kilburn.

If there is one thing that 2013 has already proven, it’s that the demand for a taste of the 1960’s is bigger than ever. The Rolling Stones demanded £600 - £700 a ticket at the 02, and are headlining Glastonbury for the first time.

The David Bowie exhibition at the V&A is sold out, and his first album in 10 years shot straight to the top of the UK album charts. The Stones’ and Bowie’s mainstream success are a far cry from 50 years ago, when the Stones were fired from the Original Marquee Club and David Bowie was yet to release his first album (that was the self-titled David Bowie in 1967).

Politically, tensions rose as 70,000 marched to Trafalgar Square as part of the Campaign For Nuclear Disarmament. MP John Profumo resigned over his affair with high-class prostitute Christine Keeler.

RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Returns for 2013 with gardens, flowers and shopping galore

he RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, the UK’s biggest gardening show, will be back in its home in one of the country’s most stunning Royal Parks. The show, which celebrates the great garden festival, has a new look for 2013 with three new zoned areas. It will offer a fun day out with its mix of gardens and shopping, flowers and food, picnics and the outdoors, all set against an idyllic backdrop. The show will be home to 34 gardens, which will demonstrate seasonally inspiring plant combinations and the latest trends in garden design. This year for the first time the show will be divided into three zones, featuring gardens, plants, food and shopping reflecting their individual themes. Keen gardeners will love Grow, where they will find nurseries, plants stalls, potting bench demonstrations, and stands selling the very best in gardening equipment. In Escape to the country visitors will find the Country Living Magazine Pavilion, learn how to ‘grow their own’ fruit and veg, marvel at the show’s famous roses and floristry and sample the delights of the Artisan Food Producers in the Great Tastes Marquee. In keeping with

the show’s reputation for breaking boundaries in contemporary garden design, the third zone, Inspire, sponsored by Ecover, focuses on innovation and making the most of outside space.

This year’s highlights will include: Gardens This year’s 34 gardens will be inspired by themes as diverse as the three witches of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, seen in SRUS’s garden ‘The Witches of Macbeth’ and the threat of waste on the world’s oceans, an issue explored in ‘The Ecover Garden’. The gardens will also include Conceptual Gardens, which this year embrace the themes of both devastation and sustainability, and High Cost Low Impact Gardens, which will prove to visitors that great gardens with a wow factor can be achieved on a budget.

Growing Tastes With a new look for 2013 visitors to the Growing Tastes Marquee will learn all they need to know about fruit, vegetable and herb growing, by getting advice from the very best growers. They will be able to buy delicious foods direct from the producers and there will be daily demonstrations from the School of Artisan Food, food and foraging demonstrations and growers proving great advice on successful fruit and vegetable growing.

Rose and Floristry Vintage Festival Visitors to the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show love the Rose Marquee, with its beautiful colours and scents. This year’s theme is Vintage 50s, and events will include the launch of the Rose of the Year.

There will be spectacular floristry displays from professionals, as well as from up-and-coming talent from floristry colleges.

Floral Marquee The Floral Marquee will be home to around 95 top British nurseries whose awe inspiring displays of gorgeous blooms will dazzle visitors. New for 2013 will be two RHS Potting Benches where nursery specialists conduct hands-on demonstrations to pass on practical tips for visitors to take home.

Country Living Magazine Pavilion Around 120 designers, craftspeople and producers will showcase original products, including furniture, garden accessories, handcrafted jewellery, stylish clothing, and arts and crafts.

Wildlife features In collaboration with the Eden Project, the show will feature a stunning butterfly dome, allowing visitors to get up close to a magnificent array of beautiful tropical butterflies. There will also be a display of native butterflies in “‘Bees and Butterflies’, a series of features, talks and activities to educate us about our garden friends. The Bee Garden and Marquee will also provide advice for how to support and entice important pollinators to gardens and demonstrate bee husbandry.

Top garden designers and celebrities at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Ecover, sponsors of the Inspire zone, have tasked a number of horticulture and design personalities to design planters throughout the zone. Matthew Wilson, James Alexander, Pippa Greenswood and Jekka McVicar are amongst those doing some creative planting, with the finished planters being donated to Maggies Cancer Care Hospices after the show. Celebrities including Joely Richardson, Kate Humble and David Domoney have customised henhouses, which will be auctioned off for RHS Campaign for School Gardening and for Country Living Magazine’s selected charity, the Addington Fund, which supports British farming.

Fun for kids and families The work of school students will be on show in the Schools’ Scarecrow Competition, where infant and primary school pupils from around the South East will present the scarecrows they have made and decorated according to this year’s theme of national costumes. A selection of the best garvinea plants grown by schools around the country will also be on display with a prize for

the best. On the weekend, the Children’s Zone will include a ‘Sow and Grow’ feature, where children will be able to sow yarrow, decorate pots and made bumblebee hats, as well as having their faces painted and watch balloon modelling.

years of the luxury that is Lamborghini

2013 marks the 50th Anniversary of Lamborghini. The company’s history is one of challenges and uncontested records, set by its founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini, who decided to create the world’s most beautiful, and powerful super sports cars.

F

erruccio Lamborghini was born in 1916, this capable, impetuous, strong-willed Taurus was the leading character in the foundation of the company and the early phases of its extraordinary history. Ferruccio was a very wealthy man, following World War II, he founded his tractor factory, but by the early 1960s, Lamborghini knew exactly what he wanted... to build a super sports car to compete with Ferrari. Constructing that kind of car was viewed by others as an unexplainable extravagance, and something that would squander his fortune without ever turning a profit. But Lamborghini had done his homework, and started working on his project in 1962, and by May 1963 he had already founded ‘Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini’, buying land in Sant’Agata Bolognese, to build a large ultramodern factory. The first model was naturally put out quickly, for its official presentation at the Turin Auto Show in November 1963. The debut of the Lamborghini in a narrow but fiercely competitive market – shared until

then by Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin and Jaguar – certainly created a stir.

Sceptics seriously doubted Lamborghini’s ability, but those who knew him well simply commented: “wait and see, because Lamborghini knows what he’s doing.”

In 1964, the body’s first design was redone completely to make it more attractive to the public, and he thus turned to the famous Milan-based Carrozzeria Touring. The changes made created a line that became a classic: original but without being extreme. The 350 GT was born.

The speedy two-seater Berlinetta had everything to attract customers. Lamborghini, the tireless promoter of his own company, did not hesitate to go about with his creation to show it off to the world. The immediate and almost inevitable offshoot of the 350 GT, was the 400 GT. Its engine was increased to a four-litre model and it featured the first gearbox designed in-house by Lamborghini.

Thus, by early 1965 the coupes from Sant’Agata were starting to be noticed. Sales gradually started to increase, although these figures were obviously small, given the elite target. This was the first, great phase of the Lamborghini company. Between 1965 and 1966, the company presented an astonishing number of new models. Although cars like the 3500 GTZ, 350 Spyder by Touring and the Monza 400 were essentially prototypes, the seemingly extravagant chassis presented at the Lamborghini stand during the 1965 Turin Auto Show was destined to have a profound impact on the history of the company and on the entire automotive industry.

In October 1967, just three years after its hesitant debut in Turin, Lamborghini arrived at the Italian Auto Show with an extraordinary lineup. By this time, the range of cars was truly impressive.

Lamborghini could now look towards the future far more optimistically, with a flood of orders for the Miura and unparalleled interest and publicity. Lamborghini had been right on target. Lamborghini thus became a symbolic name in the auto world, the emblem of excess, going ‘further’ at all costs. The Miura was the most fashionable car of its day, essentially equivalent to the Mini, albeit at the other end of the price scale. It was a car that the very wealthy simply had to have, because it was a symbol, for it was a car that, like no other, expressed the audacity, gusto for living and freedom to travel that characterised the era. Almost inevitably, overnight it became the favourite among playboys, film stars, industrialists, musicians and royalty around the world: anyone who really counted drove a Miura, or at least had one on order. The Shah of Persia, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were just a few of the loyal customers who bought this car, and Lamborghini became a familiar name to them.

Luck continued to smile on the Miura. The clear improvement in its overall quality, which came about with the S version, bolstered its market position.

While Lamborghini continued to produce as fast as possible, it couldn’t keep up with orders received from around the world. 1970 also brought in several innovations, in October, a special VIP version of the Espada was presented, with a range of luxury finishes that were unusual for the period, such as air conditioning, a bar and a television.

In 1971, Lamborghini was at the peak of its success. In less than eight years, 50 JUNE2013

Ferruccio had accomplished his goal: from nothing, he had created a car that was not only famous around the world, but had also become nothing short of a legend. Production of the Countach began at the end of 1973 with the bright-green model exhibited at the Paris Motor Show.. The model range for 1974 thus included the Countach, the Espada Series III, the Jarama S and the Urraco S. Delivery of the first Countachs began.

The company continued to look ahead, attempting to satisfy market requirements. The success that Porsche had demonstrated that there were always plenty of car buffs around the world who were willing to spend substantial sums of money on a high-performance convertible.

And while legislation worldwide was moving towards a progressive ban of canvas-topped convertibles, the expedient used by the German car – a wide roll-bar and solid rear window, with only a removable mid-roof section – was welcomed widely.

Inspired by this concept and using the excellent mechanical basis of the nowperfected Urraco P300, Lamborghini decided to develop a Urraco model with a removable roof panel. The Silhouette was an aggressive model and had the 3-litre 260 hp V8 engine of the Urraco P300, and was presented in Italy in February 1976 at a list price of nearly 15 million lire. Obviously, this steep price tag ended up sharply limiting its circulation, and with only 54 units, it is one of the rarest and most exclusive Lamborghinis.

Fortunately, the allure of these cars, a name that had now become a legend, aroused enormous interest in the company. As soon as it was put up for liquidation, it had a number of admirers lined up to take it over. The wealthy owners of a sugar empire in Senegal and, naturally, sports car lovers, were entrusted. The Mimran brothers, immediately set out to reconstruct the company. The ‘Nuova Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini SpA’ company was thus formed in 1981 and from that moment on, work was seriously underway again.

Lamborghini went to the Geneva Motor Show in March 1981, exhibiting a Miura, and the Countach S with its large rear wing. However, the most tangible and reassuring sign of the new path undertaken by Lamborghini came with the first appearance of the Jalpa, a mature and well-finished evolution of the rare Silhouette, whose V8 engine was expanded to 3.5

litres to produce 255 hp, and an overall updating in terms of styling and ergonomics. The Jalpa (P350) was not an entirely new product, but it was a well-made and convincing car. The renaissance of the new Lamborghini came about not only through the production of the Countach, still in great demand among connoisseurs, but also through this model.

It seemed that, finally, Lamborghini’s luck had turned. Through the shrewd reconstruction work spearheaded by the Mimran brothers and Emil Novaro, the revival of Lamborghini was firmly established by this time.

Then suddenly, there came a bolt out of the blue. In April 1987, ‘Nuova Automobili Lamborghini SpA’ was taken over by the US Chrysler company. In 1987, the French Formula 1 team Larrousse asked Mauro Forghieri, the celebrated designer of Ferrari’s finest models from the 60’s and 70’s, to create a new engine, and he turned to Lamborghini with the proposal.

Forghieri designed his engine, a V12 with a 3.5-litre capacity, the maximum displacement allowed by regulations. A new parallel structure, separate from Lamborghini and named Lamborghini Engineering, was established specifically for this engine. Ready within a matter of months, the new engine was officially demonstrated to the public in April 1988.

time, Ferdinand Piëch, the grandson of the legendary Professor Ferdinand Porsche, and the nephew of Porsche founder Ferry, was the chairman of the Volkswagen Group. Piech was immediately interested: he decided to move as quickly as possible. The first letter of intents between Audi and Lamborghini was signed in June 1998, and the contract for the complete and definitive transfer of all shares from the last Indonesian shareholder to the German company was completed on 27th July of the same year, just 50 days later.

The first major innovation came in 2001 with the successor to the Diablo: the Murciélago. Its power had also been boosted to 580 hp, increasing speed, muscle and acceleration.

What had been augmented above all was the sensation of the overall quality of the car, with a level of finishing touches that was even better than the already excellent results of the last Diablos. Sales immediately went well, and Lamborghini can count on selling each one it makes, as these cars are reserved by customers well in advance.

In celebration of its 50th Birthday, Automobil Lamborghini presents a very special super sports car with exclusive equipment and technology. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 720-4 50 Anniversario is a limited and numbered series of just 100 worldwide.

Each unit has a Forged Composite badge with the 50 logo and a serial number.With its output increased to 720 hp, its new performance-oriented front and rear design, the special paintwork and unique interior trim, this Aventador is one of the most exclusive models ever produced in the history of Lamborghini.

Naturally, the news was sensational. The debut in Formula 1 racing of Lamborghini was a major event. The commitment and risk for the company were still rather limited, given that Lamborghini was simply supplying engines to the Larrousse team, which obviously pledged to pay for them. The engine showed excellent potential, and the results for 1990 were nothing short of brilliant. At the end of the British Grand Prix, Bernard won an extraordinary 4th place and Suzuki placed 6th. The best placement of the whole season came from Suzuki at the Grand Prix in Japan, as he placed 3rd and gave the company its first podium finish.

All Lamborghini models built in the 2013 anniversary year feature the 50th anniversary emblem in the cockpit. Like every Lamborghini, it is made using a combination of high-tech and artisanal craftsmanship.

The Mimran brothers’ decision to sell Lamborghini to Chrysler, a major company that mass-produced cars would be interested in purchasing a jewel like Lamborghini, but Chrysler’s sudden decision to sell the Bologna company to a group of unknown Indonesian investors seemed far more difficult to explain. This change of hands became official in January 1994, de-stabilising the company management.

Lamborghini will be appearing at Silverstone Classic, and will be the largest UK gather of Lamborghini’s in history. 100 Lamborghinis will be taking to the circuit for an amazing parade of classic and modern Lamborghinis. The manufacturer itself will have presence with a Lamborghini stand, positions alongside the Owner’s Club, displaying the new Lamborghini Aventador Roadster and other modern Lamborghinis.

entley crafts men and women based at the Home of Bentley in Crewe have renovated six barbers’ chairs, incorporating materials and finishes from luxury Bentley cars. Both Bentley and Pankhurst London share a commitment to peerless quality, contemporary style and modern luxury which combine to make the partnership one of true excellence.

Stefan Buescher, Director of Marketing¸ Bentley Motors, commented: “Bentley is widely recognised as one of the world’s most desirable and authentic luxury brands.

A key part of what makes Bentley special is our handcrafted expertise in wood and leather that makes our car interiors a special place to be.“Working with Pankhurst has given us the opportunity to show this craft in an innovative and exciting way to create a unique experience in London’s finest barber shop. Only Bentley could make such exquisite and beautiful chairs.”

The project combines both Bentley’s luxury leather trim and the Mulliner special commissioning department. Eight hides were used in the development and production of Bentley’s unique chair covers, also featuring bespoke Bentley and Pankhurst embroidery.

The chairs’ arms were refabricated by grafting new wood onto the structure to replace the redundant ashtrays, and the suspension system within the chairs was reworked to improve the level of comfort. Handsculptured new headrest foams were also produced in an improved density material to further enhance the sense of wellbeing. Finally, colour combinations were chosen by the Bentley colour and trim team in conjunction with Pankhurst.

Brent started working for Vidal Sassoon in the late 1980s as a 17-year-old, progressing quickly through the ranks and onto the art team. Plus, it has engaged with the next generation of conservationists through the Isis Education Centre, a new £2.2million facility which has introduced more than 4,000 school children to the natural world since it opened in Autumn 2011.

The Gardens at Buckingham Palace will be the venue for a one-off event this summer for holders of Royal Warrants to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Coronation.

he Royal Warrant Holders Association will host the event over four days in the Gardens of Buckingham Palace, showcasing a broad range of companies with a Royal Warrant. The Coronation Festival will celebrate innovation, excellence and industry through craft and trade; promoting the very best of UK PLC, both nationally and internationally, as a thriving destination for business, investment and tourism.

Royal Warrants are a mark of recognition to individuals or companies who have supplied goods or services for at least five years to the Households of The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh or The Prince of Wales. Warrants have always been regarded as hallmarks of quality, excellence and service.

The Coronation Festival will be split into four specific showcase areas: Design and Technology; Food and Drink; Style Pursuits and Pastimes; and Homes and Gardens. There will also be a section for The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST), the charitable arm of the Royal Warrant Holders Association, which helps financially disadvantaged, experienced crafts people

to further their skills through the funding of further education and training.

The Festival will be open to members of the public from Friday 12th - Sunday 14th July, with 60,000 visitors able to come to Buckingham Palace for the Coronation Festival. There will be a Royal Preview on Thursday, 11th July for invited guests, including Members of the Royal Family, charities, patronages, media, armed forces, inward investors and overseas trade missions, and guests of the Royal Warrant Holders Association and the Royal Household.

In the evening, the Gardens, with Buckingham Palace as the back-drop, will host a magnificent performance of music and dance. The Coronation Gala will celebrate cultural life during the reign of Her Majesty, showcasing the achievements and personality of this extraordinary age. ‘Suite Dreams’ Grosvenor House reveals its luxury nursery suite fit for a royal baby

rosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel and bespoke nursery designers Dragons of Walton Street are delighted to announce the opening of the highly anticipated ‘Suite Dreams’ nursery. Designed and tailored with a royal baby in mind, one of Grosvenor House’s Premium Park View Suites has been transformed into a quintessentially British nursery – making it the first nursery offering of its kind from a central London luxury hotel.

Inspired by the suite’s idyllic views of Hyde Park and the hotel’s history, Dragons of Walton Street, who has a historic association with the Royal family, has created and installed a selection of bespoke, hand crafted and painted furniture for an unforgettable home from home experience, catering for the needs of families travelling with small children. Guests will not only be able to indulge in the extraordinary services of Grosvenor House, they

will also have all of the practical equipment needed in the suite to ensure that their little prince or princess (as well as a sleep deprived Mum and Dad) has a relaxing, calm and comfortable stay.

Encompassing a peaceful and tranquil tone and in keeping with the Dragons’ signature style, the master bedroom features a wonderfully sculpted scroll top cotbed, complete with a regal coronet and sheer voiles neatly draped either side. Combining the practical with luxury, the bedroom, decorated in ivory tones with luxury trimmings, also has a chaise longue with two arms making nursing easier for new mothers.

Between the bedroom and the bathroom, guests will find a practical baby changing area charmingly themed with timeless Beatrix Potter characters, including the world famous Peter Rabbit.

The living area has a more playful London theme, featuring a number of child-size furnishings and toys, including a hand-painted play table bursting to life with iconic London landmarks and rush-seated chairs, hand painted for Grosvenor House. The rush-seat chair is the most iconic piece of furniture in the Dragons’ range, and is a favourite amongst celebrities - both Samantha Cameron and Sophie Dahl have had their own hand painted creations produced. The pièce de résistance however, is a beautiful dolls house cupboard hand painted to represent Grosvenor House’s signature architecture – the intricate artwork for this piece alone took five days to paint!

Guests will be able to select from three packages starting from £2,230 per night: Clarence (one night), Windsor (two nights) and Buckingham (three nights). Guests who choose the premium Buckingham package will enjoy a full baby concierge service including: pick up from the airport, an evening of childcare, dinner for two in JW Steakhouse, pampering treatments for both parents, a private consultation with one of the Dragons of Walton Street’s head designers, a private tour of Buckingham Palace (date dependent) as well as a personal shopping trip at Harrods.

Alongside the beautiful furniture, the Suite Dreams nursery also includes an iconic Balmoral Silver Cross Pram. The Balmoral is the original coach-built pram and, like Dragons’ furniture, is handmade and hand painted in the UK. Described as the Rolls Royce of prams, it has been the pram of choice for royalty and celebrities around the world for decades.

Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s 10th JULY 2013 – 16th FEBRUARY 2014

Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s, will look at how the impact of underground club culture was felt far beyond the club doors, reinventing fashion worldwide. More than 85 outfits by designers such as John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood and Katherine Hamnett will be on display together with accessories by designers including Stephen Jones and Patrick Cox.

T

he ground floor gallery will focus on the young fashion designers who found themselves on the world stage for creating bold, exciting looks. The mezzanine gallery will concentrate on club wear, grouping garments by tribes such as Fetish, Goth, Rave, High Camp and New Romantics. This includes clothes of the type worn by Boy George and Adam Ant, as well as more extreme designs worn

by Leigh Bowery.

The Catwalk To provide a snapshot of the most fashionable and creative designers working in London in the 1980s, the exhibition shows a display of garments by influential 1980s designers, with a substantial amount of menswear designs by Jasper Conran, Paul Smith, Workers for Freedom and Willy Brown who dressed Duran Duran. Textile design played an important part of 1980s fashion, with designers such as Betty Jackson helping to create the archetypal early 80s silhouette of loose shirts and bold prints. Wendy Dagworthy utilized Liberty prints while English Eccentrics and Timney Fowler made print fashionable. There will also be sections dedicated to the energetic, bright clothes of Chrissie Walsh, Georgina Godley, Bodymap and John Galliano. In the early 1980s Katherine Hamnett pioneered the vogue for stylish, casual clothing. Her designs were often based on utilitarian boiler suits and army fatigues. She conceived a series of T-shirts emblazoned with slogans, using fashion as the platform for her Green politics. John Galliano graduated from St Martin’s School of Art in 1984. His degree Collection, Les Incroyables, was inspired by the French Revolution and he spent many hours studying the dress collections at the V&A. Two of Galliano’s menswear ensembles from the 1985 Fallen Angel collection will be on display, this section will also explore the emergence of knitwear as fun and fashionable.

The Club London’s clubs in the 1980s acted as a site for the convergence of music and fashion and provided a safe environment in which young people

could experiment and mix with those of similar tastes. Examples will be displayed, ranging from the exaggerated, exotic styles favoured by the Blitz crowd, to the dance influenced looks of acid house. In September 1982, The Face observed a ‘hardening of attitudes in music and fashion’ that reflected the economic conditions of Thatcherite Britain: ‘Ubiquitous Levi’s worn into holes, leather dominating everything … big boots and no socks and espadrilles … T-shirts ripped and torn’. The ‘Hard Times’ look coincided with a revival of rockabilly style in clothing and music. Michiko Koshino’s first store in Covent Garden had a dance club atmosphere and included DJ turntables to complete the effect. In 1987, she began a line of menswear called Motorking, which was worn by David Bowie and Moby. Her club designs included garments made from inflatable plastic fabric that blurred the distinction between art and fashion. Rave and euphoric house nights, where the dance music created an atmosphere in which inhibitions were totally gone, changed dress once again. Following the summer of 1987, a number of DJs began to recreate the sound and atmosphere of the Ecstasy-fuelled Ibiza dance clubs.

The atmosphere of friendly and fun clubs like Shoom began to be reflected in much more casual styles. The dressed-up aesthetic of earlier clubs, like Taboo, was replaced by ‘ponchos, dungarees, and loose T-shirts bearing the yellow Smiley motif’ as reported The Face in June 1988. A small club-like area will be created within the space to show film footage of clubs from the 1980s and stream music compiled by Jeffrey Hinton.

There will also be unique garments made for club stars such as Leigh Bowery, Scarlett and Juliana Sissons. The clubs were a place to perform and shine and the clothes, worn by men and women, were extreme and made a statement.

Christian Louboutin Opens New Boutique within Harrods Luxury French designer Christian Louboutin has opened his first standalone boutique within iconic London department store, Harrods. The 140 metres sq space, which sits adjacent to the shoe boudoir, offers a wide selection from the women’s shoe and bag collections.

ritically acclaimed product and interior designer Lee Broom was commissioned to design a store concept drawing inspiration from its surroundings, as is customary for the brand. Whilst retaining signature Christian Louboutin interior features including its red carpet and niched alcoves on which the product is presented. The concept captures the spirit of Christian Louboutin combined with a quintessentially British twist to celebrate Louboutin’s theatricality whilst offering the customer a unique shopping experience.

London landmarks are skilfully incorporated into the space; an intricate white fanned arch-way entrance reminiscent of Covent Garden Opera House creates an impressive shop window whilst traditionally styled white street lamps act as shoe display areas throughout the space. Wall displays of bespoke tiles, evocative of the original London Underground walls, act as a colourful backdrop for collections which are perched

upon shelving fabricated from illuminated light boxes. At the rear, paying homage to Big Ben, a giant etched glass clock face illuminates the space against the arched windows of the store.

Divided into two distinct areas, the private shopping room is revealed behind a mirrored doorway. The use of the brands signature red within soft furnishings and the tiled wall combined with the low lounge seating creates an intimate space. A wall created entirely of cabinet shelves in a warm wood, peppered with antique handle details, displays a selection of exceptional archive pieces from across the designers career lit by the celebrated Crystal Bulbs from the Lee Broom collection.

Elsewhere, signature pieces from the Lee Broom collection were selected by Louboutin to furnish the space including items from the Salon range, re-worked in patterned materials and a new colour palette of deep purples, greys and dusky pinks. Broom’s Tile Lamp echoes the tiled wall featured throughout the space.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in a mole?

A mole (or naevus) is the term applied to any spot on the skin. Many molesare coloured (pigmented) but some have no colour.

What is a Melanoma?

A melanoma is the medical term for a mole. This simply means any pigmented or n on pigmented lesion; it does not mean a cancer. Although most moles are brown, they can vary from flesh coloured through yellow and blue, to black. Moles can be many different shapes and can be single or multiple, on almost any part of the body. Everybody has moles; some people have more than others. Most moles have formed before the age of 20, but some people can get new moles well into their 30s or beyond.

Melanoma Symptoms The vast majority of moles remain benign (non cancerous) and never cause any trouble. However, a small number may change with time and have the potential to become a cancerous mole (malignant melanoma). If a mole changes in size or colour, if it itches, is painful or bleeds, or if new nodules develop around it or it looks red and inflamed then the mole should be removed for examination.

Melanoma Treatment It is important that moles are removed properly so they can be thoroughly examined. It is usually recommended that moles are removed with an ellipse of normal skin around them, aiming for a 2mm margin of clearance. Most of the moles that are removed turn out to be fine. Pathologists (doctors who examine tissues under the microscope) use different terms for benign moles.

They may be junctional, juvenile, blue, compound, dermal or intradermal. All these are descriptions for benign (non cancerous) moles. Some will be what are called dysplastic moles. These are thought to be precancerous moles that have the potential to become malignant melanomas if they are left.

Although many of them may not turn cancerous it is impossible to tell and so they should probably be removed. The next stage after the dysplastic 92 JUNE2013

mole is the malignant melanoma in situ. This has just turned cancerous, but does not have the ability to spread.

Like the dysplastic mole, it is cured by removing it properly. Malignant melanomas proper have the ability to spread around the body, so the earlier they are caught the better. It seems that the most important factor in determining whether a malignant melanoma may have spread or not is its thickness. This is measured in mm and is called the Breslow thickness.

Depending on the thickness, a wider removal of the skin around a malignant melanoma is usually recommended. Malignant melanomas that are less than 1mm thick have a greater than 95% chance of causing no further trouble.

Another way of measuring the thickness of a malignant melanoma is the Clarkeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s level. This relates to which layers of the skin the malignant melanoma has penetrated. This is less accurate that the Breslow thickness in predicting the likelihood of further problems.Melanoma Specialists As with other cancers, it is important that people who have had malignant melanomas are treated by a team of specialists. Melanoma specialists include a dermatologist, a surgeon and perhaps a plastic surgeon, an oncologist and a pathologist.

Malignant melanoma risk factors Some groups of people should be regularly checked for abnormal moles. These include people who have had a malignant melanoma before, or there is a family history of it, fair skinned, fair haired or red haired people and those with a large number of moles, as well as those who have had considerable sun exposure in their lives, particularly with episodes of severe sunburn when they were young.

Instilling a true sense of care and consideration

I

n the midst of the furore surrounding the Francis report, politicians and health care professionals can often descend to finger pointing and making resolute declarations that ‘something must be done’. In such an environment it is easy to forget the real matter at hand, patient care. It has been suggested that stringent monitoring of nurses may help to ensure that consistent levels of patient care are achieved. The implication here is that ‘care’ can be quantified and regulated. Perhaps on future visits to hospital you will be presented with the fact that your ward scored an average of 6.75 out of 10 for nursing care in the previous calendar year. Now consider if such measures would be likely to reassure you as a prospective patient; probably not.

Such glaring failures in duty of care which have been displayed by the Francis report, and cases such as Winterbourne View, have occurred at a time when healthcare regulation has never been tighter.

Governments should learn from this that increased legislation does not always lead to a better outcome. It must be recognised that compassion cannot be placed into a hospital as though it were a tangible asset.

What is more necessary is to instil a culture whereby each member of staff feels that they have a personal responsibility for the wellbeing of patients. This must reach beyond nursing and ward care to every department throughout the hospital. Genuine compassion and consideration is then more likely to be displayed to patients, with the staff realising that they are not merely employed to do a job, but can help to allay the inevitable anxieties felt by people upon admission to hospital.

Instilling a true sense of care and consideration in any organisation is not something which can be achieved overnight. Unfortunately, time is not a virtue which is offered in spades to politicians and NHS managers, who are under constant pressure to deliver immediate results.

What should be clear to anyone, however, is that patients need competent and dedicated nurses at their bedside, rather than in an office behind a mountain of paperwork. Perhaps on this one occasion, political and professional point scoring can be put aside for the sake of the growing requirements of our aging population.

This issue, Rebecca Cox, Dr Kate Barnes and Steven Fullagar contribute I have been having terrible hot flushes, they have been going on for months and nothing seems to help. I find them very distracting and stressful. I have been recommended acupuncture but I feel uneasy about the idea of needles.

Many women can experience a variety of symptoms during the menopause including night sweats and hot flushes, with the average age range for the natural onset being between 45 and 56 years. There is research to provide evidence to support acupuncture’s role in dealing with women’s health issues.

The needles themselves are extremely fine and inserted at carefully selected points on the body, face or head. The sensation experienced by most people is a tingling or dull ache at the point of contact and by no means should it be painful. Practitioners can also incorporate other treatments from the Chinese Medicine toolbox, such as Moxibustion, Cupping or Chinese herbs. The first session is normally longer, giving you time to fully discuss your needs with your acupuncturist and enabling them to create an individually tailored treatment plan to suit your needs. I recently went for a Health Check and was told I have high blood pressure. I was advised to see my GP for some medication. I am concerned as I don’t like taking drugs and I feel fit and well although I know I could do with losing some weight. What would you suggest I do?

I have been getting pain in the back of my arm running from my elbow to my wrist, it seems to come and go but is definitely worse after a long stints on the computer, and also after a visit to the gym. I have tried resting it but it never seems to go properly.

I can understand your reluctance to take medication especially when you feel well but I would strongly recommend a visit to your GP. If you are found to have persistently high blood pressure you run a high risk of a stroke and may also risk other health problems such as a heart attack. Ask your GP to check your blood pressure over 24 hours with a monitor that you can wear at home which then produces a print out. With these results your GP will be able to advise you on whether you need to take medication or not.

It sounds like you are experiencing a repetitive strain injury, most likely to be lateral epicondylitis, and more commonly known as ‘tennis elbow’. It is an overuse injury that is not just associated with racket sports but can be brought on by a variety of repetitive activities and in your case by the weights at the gym and a lot of typing.

That said, there are plenty of important ways you can lower your blood pressure yourself. Losing weight will definitely help and in some cases this may be enough to avoid needing the medication.

Reducing salt in your diet, cutting down on alcohol and learning to deal with stress will all result in a significant reduction in blood pressure.

This is your golden opportunity to address this ‘wake-up call’ - take up some physical exercise, learn and give yourself time for relaxation, and relieve yourself of chronic everyday stress.

The good news is that there are a lot of successful ways to treat this condition, including osteopathic treatment. As an osteopath, I would not just be looking at the site of pain but considering all the contributory factors that have lead to the problem such as your work ergonomics, including seat height and position and type of mouse and keyboard you use. This holistic approach will hopefully not only help resolve the problem but also prevent its recurrence.

eter Coughlan the manager and driving force behind this up and coming company has been making things with metal ever since a start-up business in Perth Western Australia back in the mid eighty’s with a hands on approach and strong focus on design, things soon started to take off and “Fear and Loathing” established itself in the local market making mainly furniture combining iron work and reclaimed local hardwoods This start-up was also the vehicle to implement new ideas about becoming involved in a social enterprise schemes and employed ex-offenders through in what was known at the time as the second chance job register.

Leaving Australia in 97 for an overdue gap year it didn’t take long to find a new opptunity and discovered the forge on Eel Pie Island in Twickenham as Peter discribes”it was like finding a comfy chair “surrounded by creative people it was a great environment to take time out and learn new skills inc traditionally blacksmithing from the forge owner at the time Nick Shields. It was so good in fact that’s where he stayed for the next ten years taking over the forge and local artist outlet shop “Par-ici” in church st Twickenham with Michele Whitby.

From there ,the next step was forming urban iron and moving off the Island into a bigger workshop in Teddington, it was a pragmatic decision that enabled this new enterprise space to grow and in the last 4 years has grown on its success to become a respected name in quality gates and railings.

In July last year we moved into bigger workshops at MSO Boat Yard, Red Crane, Dock Road, Brentford and this expansion allows us to increase our capacity for the larger commercial projects where quality and bespoke design are focal points while retaining a personal service for that broken gate that might need fixing or missing cast iron railheads that need replacing , It’s important for me that my staff become involved and have input during the fabrication and take ownership of the part they play ,my staff all have a good knowledge in each other roles and take pride in the feedback which is often left for us at Check a trade “ What does the remainder of 2013 hold for Urban iron, ‘’well for a start I’m not watching the news because the doom and gloom bears no relationship to my order books. Recently we have project managed entire frontages involving coordinating the brick layers and overseeing automation this is an area I would like to develop as it leads to a seamless join in the overall effect, I would also like to introduce training or a job opportunity for disadvantaged youth, consolidate work practice and focus on the detail in that makes the difference’’.

nglish City Stone are specialists in the area of restoration of Victorian and Georgian stone steps. With over 25 yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experience in the field they can return any worn out flight of leaking steps to its former glory, both transforming the entrance to the property and protecting it from the elements.

During the Victorian and Georgian eras the majority of townhouses were constructed with stone steps in either Portland limestone or Yorkshire sandstone (Yorkstone). These natural stones gave the entrance to homes and offices a bold elegance and were designed to withstand many decades of foot traffic and weather erosion. However, most of these original steps are now in a state of disrepair and many allow water to leak into the space beneath them. A quick look down any London street will demonstrate the way in which this problem has been tackled in the past: an ugly covering of bitumen or concrete.

English City Stone supply and fit both Yorkstone and Portland limestone to replace worn or leaking stone, concrete or tiled steps. They have a revolutionary waterproofing system combining several membranes which funnel water away from the property whilst retaining flexibility, so even if the building moves over time the waterproof barrier is not compromised.

For a genuine Victorian or Georgian finish a flight of steps may require a cast metal handrail or gate, often with ornate baluster panels. If there are already railings in place these can be removed and refitted and any damaged sections can be re-cast using traditional methods. Installing 130 JUNE2013

the railings usually involves diamond drilling the stone, a process which can easily damage the underlying stonework if the materials are not fully understood by the drill operator. English City Stone have their own in-house stonework and metalwork teams, so finishing work does not have to be subcontracted to other companies who may not have the same in depth knowledge of the base materials.

With this in mind, customers can be assured that the company take full responsibility for all of the work undertaken.

The scope of the works English City Stone will undertake does not stop at the steps. They will supply and fit all associated stone paving and other masonry items such as coping stones, pier caps, window sills and door surrounds. Again, all of this work is carried out by their in-house teams ensuring the highest quality of craftsmanship.
