Last Night of the Proms

SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 2013- ROYAL ALBERT HALL, SW7

arin Alsop will make history at the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall when she becomes the first woman to conduct the world famous final night of The Proms. Alsop conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra through a programme of both traditional and new music, threading together the many exciting themes of the 2013 Proms.

Park, alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra and conductor... An array of acclaimed artists, including, will also take part (more artists will be announced in due course). The Hyde Park event is broadcast live on BBC Radio 2. Highlights of the Last Night celebrations around the country will be included as part of the live coverage on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Radio 3, while digital TV viewers can choose to watch the Royal Albert Hall.

Stars of the classical world, Nigel Kennedy and Joyce DiDonato take to the stage to perform a wide range of popular pieces including Over the Rainbow, Danny Boy, and Williams’ Lark Ascending.

Described by conductor Jiri Belohlavek as “the world’s largest and most democratic musical festival”, the much-loved classical celebration now encompasses more than 100 concerts each year.

Fancy dress is an optional extra: from dinner jackets to patriotic T-shirts. Many use the occasion for an exuberant display of Britishness. Union Flags are carried and waved by the Prommers, especially during Rule, Britannia!”. Flags, balloons and party poppers are all welcomed though John Drummond famously discouraged this ‘extraneous noise’ during his tenure as Director of the Proms. Sir Henry Wood’s bust is adorned with a laurel chaplet by representatives of the Promenaders, who often wipe an imaginary bead of sweat from his forehead or make some similar gentle visual joke.

Opening with the world premiere of Anna Clyne’s Masquerade, the Last Night programme includes music by some of the season’s Anniversary composers, including Wagner and Britten, as well as featured composers Williams and Bantock, before closing with the traditional Last Night pieces.

The Last Night of the Proms celebrations spill out of the Royal Albert Hall into all four nations of the UK. Each BBC Proms in the Park event has its own popular line-up of artists and presenters, and culminates in a live link-up with the Royal Albert Hall for the second half of the concert, transmitted on BBC One. Nigel Kennedy and Joseph Calleja, both of whom will have featured earlier on in the festival, will perform at BBC Proms in the Park, Hyde 10 AUGUST2013

The Royal Albert Hall could be filled many times over with people wishing to attend the Last Night.

Tickets are almost as hard to come by as Centre Court passes for the Wimbledon finals, but the whole thing is broadcast live on the BBC - and all round the world.

Setting New Standards Centurion Club near St Albans opened on July 1st and is already being lauded as one of the finest inland courses in the whole of England.

he Club is owned by an Anglo-Dutch quartet comprising Chairman, Graham Wildish, Managing Director, Scott Evans along with Bert Pronk and André Hendriks and they have spared nothing in their desire to create a private members’ Club of unrivalled quality.

The Club’s 7,084-yard par-72 course is jointly designed by Scott Evans and Simon Gidman, a past president of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects. They have succeeded in crafting a modern masterpiece which is destined for a place near the top of the GB & I course ratings.

There are a number of things which standout at The Centurion Club and the first is the majestic piece of land the course is built on. It is both picturesque and undulating and the mounds that separate many of the holes will make marvellous vantage points if ever the owners decide to host a top Tour event.

The A1 creeping bent grass greens are already in immaculate condition and are sufficiently contoured to make pitching and putting challenging without becoming a chore. It is a course which provides options for the thinking man’s golfer and also enables a player to use every club in the bag.

Most courses have a single signature hole but The Centurion Club is spoilt for choice in that department. It opens and closes with spectacular par-5s and in between there is as diverse and inviting a collection of par-3s, par-4s and par-5s as can be found anywhere in the country.

back tees but with five sets of tees it is eminently playable for all standards which is something Gidman is keen to ensure at all the courses he builds.

“Our courses are designed to be enjoyed by all golfers and not just by players who can hit the ball 240-yards through the air,” he said. “We want golfers of all abilities to enjoy the experience which is why we have worked hard to provide a variety of different strategic options.

“There are many grand holes at The Centurion Club,” he added. “My own favourite might well be the long par-4 6th but it is interesting to note different people often tell you they have a different favourite hole.

“The 18th is probably the most spectacular but I’d like to think it’s the sort of course where you’re likely to remember most holes long after you’ve played.”

A flexible and varied design is the key to the success of the golf course in Evans opinion. “We have looked to build a course that is fun for golfers of all abilities, but also one that is a good test for the top players from the back tees. The feedback we have received so far suggests that we have achieved that and as it matures over the next few years it’s only going to get better.”

Some of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains for inspection by the experts. Presenter Fiona Bruce says, “This will be my 6th year on the Antiques Roadshow and I still feel so lucky to be presenting the programme . Every week is different; a new location and thousands of new visitors. The only constant is the pleasure of the unexpected - we never know what will turn up, from the most fabulous Faberge to the most humble object with a riveting story...’

The last series, watched by an average of six million viewers, included some amazing finds such as a 1680 Japanese jar bought at a car boot for less than £10 and worth £5,000, a Fijian buli buli club valued, much to the owner’s surprise, at £35,000, an 18th century English lidded glass goblet bought for £2 and worth £5,000, a sculpture by Barbara Hepworth which had been sitting in a school office for years and was worth £80,000, an old Chinese pot which was about to be sent to the charity shop turned out to be 18th century and worth £8,000, a 1660 wine bottle found in a skip was worth £12,000, and a collection of powder compacts were valued at £100,000.

NFL on Regent Street for traffic-free day SATURDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER 2013 Regent Street will be traffic-free on Saturday 28 September to showcase the best of American Football and host a “Block Party” celebrating the following day’s NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers.

T

his free event between 12 noon and 6pm will give shoppers the chance to experience the music, food, cheerleaders, team drum-lines and interactive games, alongside other popular and exciting features of American Football. Players from the Vikings and Steelers will be taking time out from their preparations for the following day’s showdown at Wembley Stadium to celebrate with their fans on Regent Street.

Alistair Kirkwood, managing director of NFLUK, said: “We are really looking forward to giving visitors to Regent Street the opportunity to sample the excitement and razzmatazz of the NFL. The range of activities planned will offer something for everyone; whether a die-hard NFL fan or those who are simply looking for a fun day out or are curious to find out a little bit more about the sport.”

The National Football League (NFL) is the most popular professional sport in the United States, with more people naming the NFL as their favourite than all the other professional sports combined. The climax of the NFL season, the Super Bowl, accounts for the top ten most-watched television shows in US history, with more than 160 million tuning in every year.

The NFL has responded to the great interest among UK fans by deciding to stage two games at Wembley this autumn. On Sunday 29th September the Minnesota Vikings will host the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have won a record

six Super Bowls, and on Sunday October 27 the Jacksonville Jaguars will be at home to the San Francisco 49ers.

Since 2007, the NFL has played one competitive, regular-season game every year at Wembley Stadium, with sell-out crowds of around 83,000. The action on-field is supported by a range of activity around London during the week of the game - including public appearances by NFL players and cheerleaders, community events and an NFL Fan Rally, which attracts more than 40,000 people the day before the game.

Following the success of Summer Streets, when Regent Street was traffic free for four consecutive Sundays in July, this exciting event will mark a new date in the calendar where shoppers will be able to enjoy a street free of traffic to make the most of their shopping day.

Suede’s special guests are the splendid Brighton-based indie rockers British Sea Power, the title of whose current album, ‘Machineries of Joy’, was inspired by a collection of short stories by the great sci-fi author, Ray Bradbury.

The night will end with a spectacular firework display.

Roderick Dunk will be well known to BBC Radio 2 listeners as the BBC Concert Orchestra’s regular guest conductor for the long running Friday Night is Music Night.

Starring the legendary Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, and choreographed and directed by Gene Kelly, the film offers an entertaining depiction of a 1927 Hollywood caught up in the transition from silent films to talkies. The RPO, conducted by Neil Thomson, will bring the film’s iconic soundtrack to life while the re-mastered film is shown on the big screen.

attersea Power Station, built in the 1930s as a coal-powered fire station and powering over one fifth of London at its peak, will host site visits as part of Open House London for the first time. It will be the last opportunity to see one of London’s most iconic buildings before it undergoes an eagerly anticipated and vibrant mixed-use redevelopment with shops, cafes, restaurants and bars set amongst 3,500 new homes and 18 acres of green space. It will be amongst more than 700 buildings throwing open their doors to promote the value of good design over the Open House London weekend, alongside a programme of neighbourhood walks, engineering and landscape tours, cycle rides and experts’ talks – all for free. A highly anticipated fixture in the capital’s cultural calendar, Open House London is a truly city-wide celebration of the buildings, places and spaces where we live and work. It will be a unique opportunity to see, explore and learn about London’s amazing architecture and design over one weekend.

culpted with the flowing lines of an Art Nouveau masterpiece and heavy tones of automotive styling, the Xhibitionist, with it’s deployable bow platform and reconfigurable interior space breaks new ground in yacht styling and indeed opens a new niche in corporate floating real estate.

Redefining Traditions You can be forgiven for thinking, at first glance, that you’re seeing a leaked still from a yet-to-be released, Fifth Element style sci-fi blockbuster. Far from being fiction, though, this yacht has been designed with very real, very modern and very useful applications in mind. It is, first and foremost, a cleverly engineered workhorse; a nautical tool designed to fulfil many different roles. As the name and unconventional appearance may suggest, this is no ordinary yacht.

This is something completely different. This is the Xhibitionist.

The brainchild of renowned Swedish-based designer, Eduard Gray, the Xhibitionist is partly inspired by traditions as old as seafaring itself. The desire to rekindle some of those traditions in an ultra-modern setting has resulted in, not only, the creation of a jaw-dropping super yacht, but the creation of a veritable entity

that has almost developed a personality of its own. As much thought has gone into the conception of this vessel in terms of its viability as has gone into the actual structural design itself. It is, quite simply, a masterful blend of style, purpose and efficiency. One of the most striking elements on this one-of-a-kind vessel is the hull. The inverted trimaran configuration has been employed for one overriding reason; stability.

That, in itself, speaks volumes about the real reason the Xhibitionist has come about.

Futureproof Stability in any line of business can quite often mean going with the flow: literally. The Xhibitionist is endowed with the capability to evolve with and adapt to the pace of change we see in today’s world alongside maintaining its enduring aesthetic appeal. It has been future-proofed in some respects; both in terms of its actual features and its potential ‘lives’, as it were.

Unlike a ‘private’ yacht, this versatile yacht has been designed to do a job; or rather, jobs. What those jobs are could vary tremendously but one of them is probably abundantly obvious: this thing has been designed to wantonly, shamelessly, unabashedly and knowingly steal the show.

‘Show’ is, really, at the crux of what the Xhibitionist is all about. Aside from being a ‘show’ unto itself, it has been created in such a way that some of the real showing takes place on the inside. The shape of the outside may give some people a clue as to where we’re heading next.

The undeniably automotive lines are testament to Eduard Grays achievements as a designer of supercars (one of which, the Xhibit-G, has been specially created to complement the Xhibitionist). A common first reaction, it has to be said, is just that; ..’it looks like a car’ (indeed, Batman has been mentioned a few times, too).

Art-Nouveau Styling As far as investments go, the Xhibitionist resembles more of a real estate and marketing venture than a yacht. If so desired, it can effectively be used as an exclusive, floating showroom. A Steinway piano completes the scene beautifully while the vessel is in ‘guest mode’. The dual staircase by Cornish Stairways adds a homely familiarity to the main exhibition room in its full open glory and the Baccarat lighting perfectly complements the subtle Art-Nouveau styling throughout. In ‘Retail Mode’ the partitions are in place creating many individual spaces for a more private retail experience and the Nuance smart shading feature from Vision Systems provides yet more privacy at the swipe of a fingertip.

Sun Lover At the stern is the sprawling beach club area providing space for events closer to the lapping water. It is, as with most yachts, also an access point and will likely be the first place one would set foot on board. Matching pontoon extensions are also an option, should they be required.

Above all the fly deck is where the serious relaxation takes place. Two separate areas, one with a jacuzzi, provide guests with ample space to unwind in comfort and take in the views and sunshine.

Sunshine is something the Xhibitionist is particularly fond of, with massive solar panels in operation; a sight to behold in itself. Opening up out of what looks like the hood of a giant sports car, they serve two purposes. The solar panels themselves not only provide power to the vessel; they’re sturdy enough to act as a helipad, concert stage, or whatever else suits the need of the owner. The frontal section that drops down serves the same purpose as its counterpart on aircraft carriers; allowing for access and loading. It is not beyond the realms of imagination: seeing a celebrity DJ or a live band perched on the platform performing in front of ten thousand people in a marina.

At the bow of the yacht is another fascinating addition; the viewing window, Jacques Cousteau himself would have approved. Although it’s above water, in this case, it provides a select group of guests with something of a secluded alcove; one with a spectacular view.

Floating, Working Asset The Xhibitionist is an intelligently designed and finely tuned instrument that was made, quite simply, to turn heads. More than that, it poses a serious option for investors when comparing to the real estate market in terms of Dollars per square foot and as a key feature in a business model literally represents a floating, working asset. The size alone of the solar panels gives some indication of just how efficient the Xhibitionist can be (and how quietly it can glide into a marina). They also go to provide free energy for the final piece de resistance when talking eye candy..the night time illumination. As though the Xhibitionist weren’t spectacular enough, evening lighting by Ocean LED have ensured that it marks its territory and keeps it long after the sun has set.

This September sees one of the most important events on the global design calendar, the London Design Festival in its eleventh year.

he London Design Festival is a key constituent of London’s Autumn creative season, alongside London Fashion Week, Frieze Art Fair and the London Film Festival. Established in 2003 its role is to celebrate and promote London as the world’s design capital and gateway to the international design community.

The Festival expects more than 250 partners and over 300 events celebrating the best in design. As ever, the Festival also delivers its own varied programme of commissioned projects with highlights at Tate Modern and at its hub venue, the Victoria and Albert Museum, with a number of site-specific installations.

Last year there were 79 shows and events at the Festival’s central hub at the V&A, while the four Design Districts including Brompton Design District, Shoreditch Design Triangle and Fitzrovia Now, hosted over 100 events. The Festival attracted a dedicated – or direct – audience of over 350,000 people, from over 60 countries with a wider audience of over 2m people coming into contact with the major public commissions.

The Festival works closely with, and receives financial support directly from, the Mayor’s Office – having transferred support from the London Development Agency. The Festival also receives support from Arts Council England, as a National Portfolio Organisation 2012-15.

New look Thames Festival expands to spectacular 10-day celebration of London’s river 6th – 15th SEPTEMBER 2013 The Mayor’s Thames Festival undergoes an exciting transformation this year, staging a 10-day celebration of the river through inspiring events on the water and along its banks and bridges.

or the first time, the festival will extend beyond its usual concentrated weekend of riverside animations to a wider season of accessible public art commissions, performances and river-based activities, as well as initiatives to get people into boats and back onto the waters of London’s greatest natural asset. With the principal focus being between Lambeth Bridge and St Katharine Docks, events will also take place this year from the source of the Thames down to its mouth.

Major artists taking part include Richard Wilson (UK), Zatorski + Zatorski (UK), Layla Curtis (UK), Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen (Denmark), Hew Locke (UK), and Doug Fishbone (USA).

Some events to look forward to are: A Water-borne Ships’ Opera: 14th September 2013 - The lost voices of the Thames will call out across the river once again when an extraordinary waterborne ships’ opera is staged by twice Turner Prize-nominated Richard Wilson (UK) and Cultureship Directors and artists, Zatorski + Zatorski (UK). The centrepiece of this year’s Thames Festival, 1513: A Ships’ Opera begins at sea on the morning of 14th September 2013 at the mouth of the Thames Estuary, launching a day-long, three-act performance that will reach its climax in a spectacular sound, steam and light display in the Pool of London later that night.

Against the backdrop of the majestic Tower Bridge, an armada of historic vessels from the age of sail, steam and diesel will resurrect the lost sounds of the river in a live, moving, operatic concerto of ships’ steam whistles, bells, horns, hooters, sirens and cannon. Some of the musicians taking part in the performance have worked with Bjork, Oasis and The Pogues. 1513: A Ships’ Opera is part of a suite of five Cultureship projects celebrating the Thames curated by Cultureship Directors and artists, Zatorski + Zatorski, for the 2013 Mayor’s Thames Festival, also featuring Layla Curtis (UK), Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen (Denmark), Doug Fishbone (USA), and Hew Locke (UK). 1513: A Ships’ Opera is a Cultureship project commissioned by the Thames Festival Trust.

Bringing Back Brooches

W

hen you think of brooches, what immediately springs to mind?

Maybe it is something pinned to a lapel, both jacket and jewel a little old fashioned, or the realisation that you never see the Queen without one. For some reason brooches occupy a very traditional place within the jewellery family, rather like a rather severe aunt.

It doesn’t have to be this way. A quick trip over to Paris will reveal a whole new range of possibilities for that beautiful but boring brooch. Maybe it is their joie de vivre or the inspiration of the jewellery ‘Grande Maisons’ at the city’s heart but an observant eye will quickly see that Parisians really do enjoy their jewellery and whether worth the earth, or fabulous paste, it is worn with flair and creativity.

The trick is not to see these jewels as over-sized lapel pins, but as self-adhesive go-anywhere pieces of glamour. Only the form of the brooch itself should dictate its most advantageous position.

Symmetrical pieces tend to work best on the centre line, but this could be at the top of a blouse or shirt, on the waistband of trousers or skirts as an elaborate buckle or an accent at the point of a V on a dress – either at the front or back. Of course the moment a rule is suggested, the thing to do is to break it. Symmetrical brooches can

be used as a variation on a bow and so could be used in similar positions such as a on a hat band, or in the hair. I have even seen them worn on the hip of a pair of jeans.

Asymmetrical brooches can be worn almost anywhere. If pinning the brooch to a piece of clothing seems tame, run a chain through the pin and you have a necklace. Attach it to a length of ribbon and you have a fabulous choker, or a shorter ribbon could be a bracelet.

The only limit is your imagination. Worn on a scarf, a brooch can be a decoration for the neck but a particularly French habit seems to be to tie the scarf to a suitably gorgeous handbag, or even pin directly to the bag if you dare.

If your brooch has sufficiently curved pins you could even thread them through a thin finger ring to create a show stopping party piece.

A note of caution: the value of a brooch may advise a limit to its position and the situation it is worn in. A strong gust of wind might lead to a family heirloom, attached to a hat, sailing off down the river so temper your creativity with common sense. Check the pins carefully and make sure that any safety clasps are working correctly.

If you are wearing a brooch with precious gems, inspect the settings to ensure that there are no loose stones. To avoid pain and injury, test where the brooch will sit so that a movement or gesture later does not lead to a serious stab wound.

he Duchess of Cambridge, formally Kate Middleton, gave birth to the couple’s first child, a son, in the hospital’s private Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, London... where Princess Diana gave birth to William in 1982 and Harry in 1984. The baby is third in the line of Succession after His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge. He is styled His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge. The baby moves ahead of Prince Harry, who’s now fourth in line.

The birth was announced via a formal press release issued by Kensington Palace, which stated that the duchess “was safely delivered of a son” at 4:24 p.m., local time, weighing 8lbs 6oz. News of the royal birth - which came after an 11 hour labour - was not made public by Kensington Palace until 8.29pm, four hours

A bulletin containing details of the birth was taken by car to Buckingham Palace and placed on an easel at the palace gates for the public to see. Outside the hospital, a man dressed as a town crier in traditional robes and an extravagant feathered hat shouted the news and rang a bell. London’s landmarks, including the London Eye, lit up in the national colours of red, white and blue, and the city had a party atmosphere unmatched since last summer’s Olympics.

Right across the country and indeed right across the Commonwealth people celebrated and wished the royal couple well. Prime Minister David Cameron told waiting reporters in front of 10 Downing Street. “It is an important moment in the life of our nation but I suppose above all it’s a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who got a brand new baby boy. It’s been a remarkable few years for our royal family -- a royal wedding that captured people’s hearts, that extraordinary and magnificent Jubilee and now this royal birth, all from a family that have given this nation so much incredible service, and they can know that a proud nation is celebrating with a very proud and happy couple.”

Before mounting the St Mary’s Hospital steps, the smiling Prince of Wales asked journalists who have been stood outside for almost three weeks: ‘Have you been there long?’ When he left around 10 minutes later, Charles said the baby was ‘marvellous’ and told journalists: ‘You’ll see in a minute’ Prince Charles spoke of his joy and pride in becoming a grandparent for the first time. “It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy,” Prince Charles said in a statement. “Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time, and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.”

The Queen told guests at a Buckingham Palace reception she was ‘thrilled’ at the birth of her great-grandson. On the eve of the baby’s birth, the Queen famously told a ten-year-old schoolgirl that she didn’t mind if it was a boy or a girl, adding: ‘I would very much like it to arrive. I’m going on holiday’.

The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth after he and his wife were brought by car from Kensington Palace to St. Mary’s Hospital in London before 6am in the early stages of labour. William joked his new son ‘has a good pair of lungs’ and tells the crowd his child has Kate’s looks and more hair than him. The medical staff present were Mr Marcus Setchell, Surgeon-Gynaecologist, Mr Guy Thorpe-Beeston, Obstetrician and Dr Sunit Godambe, Consultant Neonatologist at St Mary’s Hospital.

Gun salutes sounded across London marked the birth of the royal baby as the armed forces join in the celebrations. The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and the Honourable Artillery Company carried out the ceremonial royal salutes in honour of the new addition to the Royal Family. Gun salutes are fired for the birth of every prince or princess, no matter where their place is in the line of succession, the Ministry of Defence said. The last royal salute for a birth was for Princess Eugenie in 1990. The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, wearing full dress uniform, paraded past Buckingham Palace to Green Park where they staged a 41-gun royal salute. They went from their forward mounting base in Wellington Barracks into Green Park, where 71 horses pulled six First World War-era 13-pounder field guns into position for the royal salute. Each of the six guns fired blank artillery rounds at 10-second intervals until 41 shots were fired. The horses and riders then collected the guns and escorted them back to Wellington Barracks.

Carole and Michael Middleton were the first visitors to arrive the following day, with Prince Charles and his wife Camilla following them at 5.30pm after being rushed to London by helicopter after two-days carrying out official duties in Yorkshire.

Major Mark Edward, commanding officer of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, said: ‘The opportunity to mark the birth of the child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge by firing a 41-gun royal salute, comes as a huge honour for the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.’

The Archbishop of Canterbury, meanwhile, said he was “delighted to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the arrival of their baby boy”.” Along with millions here and around the world, I share in their joy at this special time,” he added. May God bless this family with love, health and happiness in their shared life ahead”

Whilst a royal gun salute normally comprises 21 guns, this is increased to 41 if fired from a royal park or residence. Uniquely, at the Tower of London, which is a royal residence, 62 rounds are fired as this also includes an additional 21 guns for the citizens of the City of London to show their loyalty to the monarch.

As soon as William returned to work following his two weeks’ statutory paternity leave, Kate plans to depart the palace for her parents’ mansion in Berkshire. She will reside there - on and off - for a few weeks, while her husband completes his present tour of duty with the RAF in Anglesey, North Wales. The prince will finish his posting as a Search and Rescue pilot at RAF Valley in early September, relocating to London while waiting for his next assignment, meaning the couple can enjoy some quality time together as a new family. Within weeks, by October at the latest, it is hoped that they will finally be able to move into their new official London residence, Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. Apartment 1A is actually a spacious four-storey, 20room property with its own large south-facing walled garden, which takes up half the Clock Tower wing originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren for King William and Queen Mary.

The couple have drafted in a key servant to help them look after Prince George: their housekeeper, Antonella Fresolone, hired as the couple’s “righthand woman” in May, was spotted decamping to Bucklebury, Berkshire, with the new family of three. William, Kate and their son are staying with Michael and Carole Middleton at their £4.7million Georgian Grade II listed mansion while the renovations at their new home at Kensington Palace near completion. Although the couple have so far shunned a large entourage, it seems they could not do without their Italian multitasker, who was poached from Buckingham Palace, where she worked for 13 years as one of the Queen’s three top housemaids. Palace officials confirmed for the first time last night that the couple will not have a nanny and rely upon their families help instead, saying: ‘They have both got families that will care hugely for this baby’ Royal officials say Kate and William will try to give their child as normal an upbringing as possible, a challenging goal in an age when the British royals are treated as major world celebrities.

Buckingham Palace held celebratory drinks parties at the end of the one of the most exciting Royal weeks, also held at Windsor Castle and Holyrood Palace, Her Majesty’s official Scottish residence in Edinburgh. The Palace invitation said staff could enjoy a “glass of champagne” to celebrate the “royal birth” in the dining room between 11.30am and 1.30pm. One courtier said: “The Queen is on Cloud Nine at the moment and wanted to share her happiness with her hard-working staff, so the obvious thing to do was to get out the champagne” The Queen, 87, is thrilled to have seen her great-grandson, George Alexander Louis, at Kensington Palace, the day after he was born. She then completed her duties before travelling up to Scotland to spend the summer at Balmoral. , Prince Philip has been convalescing at Sandringham following abdominal surgery in June. This means the 92-year-old Duke could not meet his great-grandson until he and the Queen return from Royal Deeside at the beginning of October.

The Royal Baby’s title follows the dukedom bestowed on William by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on his wedding day in 2011. Earlier this year, the queen issued a royal decree allowing this royal baby -- and all of William and Kate’s children -- to be titled prince or princess. The decree said “that all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of royal highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names or with such other titles of honour.”

The baby’s gender had been of particular interest because the prospect of Kate’s pregnancy had prompted a change in the laws of succession to ensure that a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother. No one can tell what political and personal changes the intervening years will bring, but the baby can be expected to become the head of state of 16 countries, including Britain, Australia and Canada. The child will also eventually become Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The little prince represents a living link to Britain’s imperial history as the great-greatgreat-great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria, who ruled at the peak of British power.

No date has yet been set for when the baby will be christened, but it is likely to be some time in the autumn, when the Royal family return from their summer break at Balmoral. The Duke of Cambridge, for example, was christened six weeks after his birth, in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace, using water drawn from the River Jordan in the Holy Land, in keeping with a tradition dating back to the Crusades. Another royal tradition is for babies to wear a lace and satin christening robe made in 1841 and worn by all of Queen Victoria’s children and every generation of royal babies since, including Prince William.

Why George Alexander Louis?

It is a partial victory for the old maxim, “the bookmakers are never wrong”.

George was the rock-solid favourite for boys’ names for a while, backed all the way down to 2/1. Alexander and Louis were both not far behind.

Of the three names, it is the significance of the third that is most obvious.

Louis immediately makes one think of Louis Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip and last viceroy of India, who was killed by the IRA in a bomb attack on his yacht. His father Prince Louis of Battenberg was Prince William’s great-great-grandfather. Louis is also one of William’s middle names. And, of course, the name of 17 kings of France (or 18 or 19, depending how you count). If Louis honours one side of the Royal Family, George clearly resonates with the other.

It was his son George VI whose struggles with his stutter are so movingly depicted in The King’s Speech. Christened Albert and known to his family as Bertie, but crowned as George, he’s a reminder that the monarch has the final say on their regal name.

Despite St George being the patron saint of England, it took the arrival of a German king, George I, to cement the name’s place in England. Long a popular name in Germany, it has Greek roots.

Prince Harry has said he is determined to make sure his nephew has fun in life - and joked about his babysitting fees. The proud uncle was one of the first family members to meet the Royal baby and said: “When I saw him he was crying his eyes out like all babies do I suppose.”

There have since been five other Georges to sit on the throne. George III, king during the loss of the American colonies, is perhaps now best known for his mental illness thanks to Alan Bennett’s play and the subsequent film adaptation.

The most recent Georges reigned through two world wars. It was George V who declared war on Germany in 1914, pitting him against his first cousin, Kaiser Wilhelm II. George V recognised the strength of anti-German feeling and changed the Royal Family’s name from the House of SaxeCoburg and Gotha to the more English sounding Windsor.

On the other hand, Alexander has never been the name of a king of England or the UK, but was borne by three kings of Scotland.

The Prince is putting his reputation as the wildest member of the royal family to good use as he plans to wet the baby’s head and Kate and William have given him their blessing. “”He has had calls made already and William has agreed to it. Kate is fine - it’s tradition.”

O

riginally started as an offshoot of the Trinidad Carnival in 1964, the Notting Hill Carnival has become an internationally acclaimed event which remains true to its Caribbean roots. Over the last forty years, it has matured into a melting pot of diverse cultural and musical genres that come together in modern West London streets.

Second only to Rio de Janeiro, Notting Hill Carnival is one of the world’s greatest street festivals, celebrating ethnic diversity and freedom through music, movement and masquerade making this uniquely cosmopolitan part of London come alive in a vibrant kaleidoscope of colour, sound and aroma.

The weekend is the high-spot of the carnival season, marking the culmination of a year of planning involving hundreds of grass-roots community organisations engaging over 50,000 young people and adults in artistic endeavours.

The Carnival consists of four art arenas: Mas (masquerade) bands - this is what provides the carnival with its

colour as vibrant costumes bands parade along the carnival route.

Steel pans or ‘pan’ - crafted from oil drums, steel pans were used

by Caribbean performers as a link to their African past. Performed as a collective, a steel band can emulate the sound of a symphony orchestra.

Calypso music – recognized as the first music of the Caribbean. This art form is used to sing about topical subjects and comment about major events.

Static and mobile sound systems – groups of DJs located at various points throughout the carnival route, playing the lively music that keeps everyone dancing throughout the festival.

The Community A typical carnival audience is a mix of old, young and every ethnicity under the sun. As well as a large number of Londoners (including the Notting Hill residents that enjoy the sights and sounds from their balconies!), visitors come from around the UK and the world to experience the unique atmosphere, spectacle and mass happiness that is carnival.

ore Brits than ever are set to don their Lycra and take to two wheels in a bid to raise thousands for UK charities. With over a 40% increase in participant sign ups, this year’s London to Brighton cycle is set to reflect the nation’s growing love for all things cycling, curtesy of the homegrown heroes of Team GB and Team Sky. On Sunday 8th September, 4,000 fundraisers will depart from Clapham Common to head south through idyllic British countryside to tackle the 54 mile route to the favourite seaside town of Brighton. Taking the route through Mitcham, Carshalton, Chipstead, Banstead, and Haywards Heath, cyclists will put their legs to the test at Ditchling Beacon before heading onto Brighton seafront for the finish line.

ll-time favourites from the golden age of British cookery - Prawn Cocktail, Fish ‘n’ Chips, and even the iconic 70’s dessert Black Forest Gateau - are getting a long overdue 21st century make-over at an affordable and informal eaterie in the heart of Mayfair.

Retro Feasts serves up plates of comfort food nostalgia with five star presentation and the finest ingredients all put together by 19-year-old chef prodigy Luke Thomas and London hospitality guru Mark Fuller.

They both were the subject of a BBC3 documentary Britain’s Youngest Head Chef recently which focussed on the launch of the teen-age culinary star’s first restaurant.

Retro Feasts creator Luke Thomas said: “We’ve come up with a menu full of the guilty pleasures that British people grew up with and still love to eat – even though they might not want to admit it in public.

“It’s is a lot of fun and very tongue in cheek but these are all great dishes that people will remember fondly. And he added: “Most of these dishes aren’t served in restaurants anymore because they fell out of fashion in more pretentious times or became derided because they had become clichéd and ubiquitous – but they have been away too long and it’s now time they were brought back.”

The social diner opened in May in Old Burlington Street just one street away from Savile Row and will be open until November. It is a casual dining experience with no reservations which will appeal to a diverse crowd of all ages.

Thomas revives classic British dishes and plating them up with 21st century panache. The menu includes Crab on Toast – with handpicked fresh white crab – and Cheese and Pineapple using a tender goats’ cheese. Classic fruity cocktails such as Tequila Sunrise and Pina Colada are served up at the bar for the full 80s experience.

The interior has a nod towards the retro styling of the 70s and 80s with glassware and crockery to match. Waiters and waitresses are dressed in cheeky and colourful old school vintage ensembles – service with a smile guaranteed.

The pop-up diner is a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds!

Posh picnics A pretty rug, a basket of mouth-watering foods and wines, and voilà, you’re good to go for some stylish al fresco eating.

he French may lay claim to the origins of the picnic, or at least the word: the first record of pique nique is found in the 1692 edition of Origines de la Langue Française de Ménage.

But no one does picnics better than the British. Once only reserved for wealthy hunters and country people out on their estates, it was the Victorians who popularised the picnic and made it commonplace, with writers like Dickens, Trollop and Jane Austen all adopting the convention in their books.

Ideally taking place in a beautiful landscape such as a park, beside a lake, with an interesting view or a public event such as before an open air theatre performance, there are many opportunities for you to enjoy a lazy afternoon in the outdoor sun and enjoy a delicious feast at your ideal picnic spot.

For a slice of romance, pick the most secluded spot you can find. A real romantic hideaway. Do your research, and find somewhere with stunning views, just in case you tire of gazing into each other’s eyes! Go the whole hog and dress up in full evening wear (minus the high heels), nominate a butler and raise a toast to the great outdoors. Plan the menu with care and love. Strawberries are important, as they are romantic foods for a picnic. Have dainty sandwiches, delicate fruits, small cuts of meats and vegetables, some pickles and sauces, and some fine gourmet treats like caviar or truffles. Use real champagne (sparkling wine) glasses. This will mean careful

carrying but glass is far more romantic than perspex. And be sure to bring the champagne or sparkling wine to fill those glasses. And don’t forget the bottle opener! Bring along music. Music is crucial to create a romantic atmosphere, if your venue allows it and doesn’t disturb others that prefer a quiet picnic.

That’s perhaps not as much fun as picking and choosing your own temptations from your local deli or farmers market: fill your hamper full of artisan breads, hand-made cheeses, hams, patés and salads, so you can rip, tear and share the food and hold your head high at the Proms in the Park.

You do need to decide whether you would like to create your own charming mix of delicious foods in a pretty basket, or save yourself some time and go with a traditional Fortnum & Mason type hamper. Your personalised hamper can be sourced, packed and delivered to you by a

Utterly original wearable works of art (and quite a lot of other things too)

R

WRITTEN BY MARK FODEN ojanatorn is an extraordinarily original shop - owned by an exceptional woman - selling some quite exquisite things. And if you have been there, you probably wouldn’t think this was overdoing it.

Owner, designer and inspirer Rojanatorn is named after the shop’s remarkable owner Rojanatorn Na Songkhla or ‘Candy’, as she insists on being called by anyone who has known her for more than 5 minutes. Candy is Thai, delightfully effusive and very engaging. She has been a well-known figure in the Bangkok fashion industry for nearly 20 years, owning a substantial jewellery business and several shops there. Her Narandha and GGub stores in the centre of the city are now extremely well known. Candy splits her time between Thailand and the United Kingdom and took the decision last year to set up Rojanatorn - an outlet for her work in London and also a companion online store.

Many beautiful things There are four main product ranges – jewellery, handbags, shirts and home decorations. Jewellery is the mainstay of the business and Candy does much of the design work herself. The items are elaborate and quite beautiful, all very well made to one-off designs. Candy has many, as she calls them, ‘longtime’ customers for whom she designs and makes items to order.

Handbags are an increasingly important part of the business. There are two types: hand-painted and fabric. The painted bags are usually leather and are done entirely by hand; each bag unique and signed by the artist. There are two ranges: one called “Rojanatorn” - designed by Candy herself – which

tend to be more classical in style; and the other - called “Kongpat” – which is… er… extremely funky. These are by Kongpat Sakdapitak a good friend of Candy’s and a very well-known Bangkok artist. The fabric bag range, which Candy has labelled ‘Blossom’, has a floral theme (unsurprisingly): they are hand-stitched and again unique (and gorgeous).

Rojanatorn’s shirts are unusual and individual. There are two sorts: Patch

by Panod Shirts are often floral with contrasting sewn patches; the Kongpat shirts are decorated with cloth paints and quite unconventional. Both are hugely stylish.

Home decorations are a recent addition to the business with items such as chandeliers, lamp shades and armchairs. Extraordinary things – some defying description!

Everything in the shop really is a work of art: you would be hard pressed to find two items the same.

A quite delightful shop The shop itself, a short walk from the New King’s Road, is charming. It’s on two levels with furniture and jewellery at street level and bags and shirts in the basement. It is highly mooch-able with nookfuls of extraordinary stuff and some very nice Thai people to show you what’s what.

Make a splash with your summer ! r a e w m i w s Shopping for swimwear is enough to bring a woman really out in a sweat. But there’s such a great range of styles, colours and flattering cover-ups available that everyone can look hot on the beach, no matter what their shape or size.

If you’re very slim If you have no waist and shoulders the same width as your hips, you can get away with pretty much anything bikini-wise, but make sure you go for one that makes you look feminine. Triangle bikinis look great on slim women, as do bikinis that fasten around the back of the neck (they flatter shoulders and rectangular shapes).

Plus, tie bottoms look great on svelte legs.

If you prefer a onepiece, go for one with geometric motifs to highlight your waist and give you shape.

One-pieces camouflage little sins like tummies and flab. Balcony shapes are glam and sexy. If you go for a two-piece, avoid bikini shorts or high-cut bottoms which will weigh down your figure.

Whether you’re slim or full-figured, avoid Square décolletés and horizontal stripes, which can make you look bigger than you are.

If you’ve got a boyish, triangular shape If you have large shoulder and slim hips, balance out your figure and make it more feminine in high-waisted short bikinis that lengthen your legs (these are also great at hiding any hint of a tummy!).

If you have a small chest, try push-up plunge bras to give you a bit of oomph. One-piece costumes suit you well, especially V-neck ones which widen your figure in the right places. Think Bond Girl! If you’re pear-shaped If you have big hips and slim shoulders, definately go for a bikini. Weigh out your bottom half with a balcony top that draws attention to your chest.

Triangle tops tied behind the neck show off good shoulders, while low-waisted bottoms with little ties balance out your shape well. One-piece swimsuits highlight your waist, but they make your legs look shorter - or even heavier - than they really are. Avoid high waists. They don’t flatter heavy hips and thighs.

If you have well-proportioned curves If your shoulders and hips are the same width and you have a slim waist, you’re lucky enough to be able to wear pretty much any kind of swimwear. Take care with onepiece costumes, though. They have to fit perfectly: if they don’t hug your curves in the right places they flatten your shape and make you look heavier than you are. If you have little love handles, avoid tight strings that make you look like you’re squeezed into your bikini. Avoid bandeau tops if you’re big-busted. They only flatten out your assets!

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in a mole?

A mole (or naevus) is the term applied to any spot on the skin. Many molesare coloured (pigmented) but some have no colour.

What is a Melanoma?

A melanoma is the medical term for a mole. This simply means any pigmented or n on pigmented lesion; it does not mean a cancer. Although most moles are brown, they can vary from flesh coloured through yellow and blue, to black. Moles can be many different shapes and can be single or multiple, on almost any part of the body. Everybody has moles; some people have more than others. Most moles have formed before the age of 20, but some people can get new moles well into their 30s or beyond.

Melanoma Symptoms The vast majority of moles remain benign (non cancerous) and never cause any trouble. However, a small number may change with time and have the potential to become a cancerous mole (malignant melanoma). If a mole changes in size or colour, if it itches, is painful or bleeds, or if new nodules develop around it or it looks red and inflamed then the mole should be removed for examination.

Melanoma Treatment It is important that moles are removed properly so they can be thoroughly examined. It is usually recommended that moles are removed with an ellipse of normal skin around them, aiming for a 2mm margin of clearance. Most of the moles that are removed turn out to be fine. Pathologists (doctors who examine tissues under the microscope) use different terms for benign moles.

They may be junctional, juvenile, blue, compound, dermal or intradermal. All these are descriptions for benign (non cancerous) moles. Some will be what are called dysplastic moles. These are thought to be precancerous moles that have the potential to become malignant melanomas if they are left.

Although many of them may not turn cancerous it is impossible to tell and so they should probably be removed. The next stage after the dysplastic 82 AUGUST2013

mole is the malignant melanoma in situ. This has just turned cancerous, but does not have the ability to spread.

Like the dysplastic mole, it is cured by removing it properly. Malignant melanomas proper have the ability to spread around the body, so the earlier they are caught the better. It seems that the most important factor in determining whether a malignant melanoma may have spread or not is its thickness. This is measured in mm and is called the Breslow thickness.

Depending on the thickness, a wider removal of the skin around a malignant melanoma is usually recommended. Malignant melanomas that are less than 1mm thick have a greater than 95% chance of causing no further trouble.

Another way of measuring the thickness of a malignant melanoma is the Clarkeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s level. This relates to which layers of the skin the malignant melanoma has penetrated. This is less accurate that the Breslow thickness in predicting the likelihood of further problems.Melanoma Specialists As with other cancers, it is important that people who have had malignant melanomas are treated by a team of specialists. Melanoma specialists include a dermatologist, a surgeon and perhaps a plastic surgeon, an oncologist and a pathologist.

Malignant melanoma risk factors Some groups of people should be regularly checked for abnormal moles. These include people who have had a malignant melanoma before, or there is a family history of it, fair skinned, fair haired or red haired people and those with a large number of moles, as well as those who have had considerable sun exposure in their lives, particularly with episodes of severe sunburn when they were young.

I am terrified of dogs and have been since I was a child. I’m concerned that I’ve passed the fear on to my 4 year old son as he is scared of dogs too. I’ve heard that hypnotherapy can help, is this true and what would it involve?

Hypnotherapy is a very effective way to address phobias and fears.

Phobias develop when the part of our brain that is responsible for our responses to danger gets confused, causing extreme reactions to situations that represent only moderate danger. This usually happens early in life, and if you are aware of the original cause of your phobia, this is a big help when seeking treatment; however even if you are not aware of the cause then hypnotherapy can still help.

You are correct that phobias can be passed on to children, so if you can address this then there is less likelihood that your son will develop the same fear. A clinical hypnotherapist will help you - using hypnosis and related techniques - to ‘reprogramme’ your automatic responses to the situations that trigger your phobic reactions. Hypnotherapy is a safe and painless process, which most people find to be very relaxing.

I am going to have a steroid injection for the tendonitis in my shoulder. Will the injection cause pain?

You may be given local anaesthetic before the steroid injection or your doctor may give this as a combined injection with the steroid, using a single syringe. After local anaesthetic it may take several hours before the feeling comes back into the treated joint so take special care not to bump or knock the area.

You will feel some discomfort afterwards as the local anaesthetic wears off, which may be initially worse than before the injection. You can take over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine and if you have any questions, ask your pharmacist for advice. I would suggest that you arrange for someone to drive you home from the procedure.

Most people have no problems after joint injection, but do contact your GP if you have a high temperature, or persistent swelling or pain in the joint that doesn’t settle within 24 hours.

It is important to follow your doctor or physical therapist’s advice regarding when to move the joint and when to have further treatment.

I am a 38 year old man and fairly over weight (23 stone). I know I need to diet, but when I cut portion sizes I am so hungry. I love biscuits, ice cream and cake and every time I try to give them up I crave them constantly. What should I do?

The trouble with dieting, as you mention, is that it tends to focus on what we can’t have, when the real success comes from finding enjoyable foods that you want to eat and that fill you up. Base your meal plans on foods with a low glycaemic load (GL) - those that release their sugars slowly and keep you fuller for longer.

Focus on managing portion sizes of starchy carbohydrates; include good quality protein from animal or vegetarian sources, good fats such as avocado, oily fish, nuts & olive oil and dramatically increase vegetable intake. Fruit is encouraged but limited according to its glycaemic effect (i.e. berries = lots! Bananas = go slow).

Placing your bed against a feature wall makes for an unusual and striking bed head, for example. Paint the wall in a bold colour (strong and sexy shades such as plum and sapphire can work well) or for a more sophisticated and glam touch, cover you wall in a material like velvet or silk.

For a subtle effect, choose a complementary shade to that of the rest of the room; a darker or lighter intensity of the same colour as the other three walls can really work well. If you’re into a bit more drama then pick contrasting colours - those that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel (a warm brown with duck egg blue for example).

Don’t just think of paint and wallpaper when creating a feature wall.

“You can use a huge variety of materials,” says Joanna. “Materials like suede, silk or wood add texture and interest. And if you have a dark room or corridor, mirrors or metallic reflective wallpapers, which are very on trend right now, are a great choice. They feel opulent and also bounce and reflect light around the space.”

Advances in digital printing mean you can now have a huge variety of photographic images blown up to wall size, if you are looking for something different. Or go 3D: a collection of objects can make a striking wall feature. Hang framed photos across an entire wall or make a feature of your album collection.

HOW THE SUPER RICH CAN HELP THE LONDON ECONOMY

F

rom the mid-1990s, the British authorities set out to lure the foreign rich – and their money turning London in particular, into what Forbes has described as “a magnet for the world’s billionaires”.

Let’s look at the benefits the 1% bring to society. In particular, focusing on those super-rich foreign tycoons who have chosen to settle here in Britain.

To be in the top 1% in the UK, you need to earn over £150,000 a year, and the super-rich: the magnates and tycoons with wealth ranging from the hundreds of millions to the tens of billions of pounds, dollars or euros.

Clearly, the financial elite don’t come to Britain to enjoy year-round sunshine and blue skies, so why do they live here and what benefits do they bring to the table? Here are five gains that spring to mind: *The top 0.5% of the world’s population – perhaps 30 million people – own nearly two-fifths

(38.5%) of its total wealth. What’s more, the UK accounts for less than 0.9% of the world’s population, yet has over 6% of the world’s millionaires. *The super-rich are attracted to the UK for many reasons, including our solid legal system, strong property rights and political and social stability. As a result, many decide

to settle in Britain permanently, with some choosing to invest part of their wealth here.

Obviously, the UK benefits enormously when foreign moguls and industrialists pour their wealth into establishing and expanding businesses within these shores, not least from job creation and higher tax revenues. * The super-rich often employ large numbers of people, either in the companies they own and manage or as their personal staff.

This is especially the case for those who choose to build businesses in London or locate and manage their wealth here. The more people these magnates employ, the more the UK benefits from higher employment and a bigger tax haul. *The rich like to dress expensively, look great and have (expensive) fun.

Accordingly, they spend fortunes on luxury items, as well as paying out large sums for everyday pleasures. For example, many of the super-rich are huge fans of British brands, so they spend freely on goods from the likes of Asprey, Barbour, Burberry, Dunhill and Mulberry. As well as splashing out on designer clothing and high-end brands,

the rich spend wildly on beauty treatments, hairdressing, flowers and cosmetic surgery.

Also, they like to own fast cars from marques such as Aston Martin, plus the obligatory ocean-going yachts and private jets.

have received had these rich folk chosen to live elsewhere. While this is only a tiny fraction of the £155 billion of income tax to be collected in 2012/13, it is better than nothing.

Of course, when these upmarket items are bought in the UK, they attract VAT at 20%.

Therefore, for every £1 million the superrich spend before VAT, the Treasury collects £200,000 of VAT on top.

*According to upmarket estate agents Knight Frank, London is the most attractive city for the world’s tycoons. This is partly thanks to a 25% to 30% decline in the value of sterling, which makes UK property much cheaper for foreign buyers.

*Another reason why the super-rich come to the UK is our extraordinarily generous tax treatment of foreign non-domiciled residents. Instead of demanding taxes on all their global income and gains, we choose to tax only on their UK-generated earnings.

Alternatively, they can opt to pay a yearly tax levy, which started at £30,000 and was increased to £50,000 recently.

Of course, living in London isn’t cheap, especially if you’re after a top-end mansion.

Partly due to demand from Greek, Italian, Russian and Far Eastern buyers, asking prices in the City of Westminster have risen by nearly half (49.6%) in the four years to February 2012. These days, £1.5 million won’t get you much more than a two-bedroom flat in the City, Mayfair or Kensington & Chelsea.

In 2010/11, this non-dom tax levy came to £153 million, which the Treasury would not

only if you already own property in Central London. If you’re looking to buy, then steeply higher prices spell bad news. By lifting prices, the super-rich make owners of premium properties richer, but also make it tougher for everyone below to climb the property ladder.

However, there is another benefit to their house buying, although it’s one that’s been hotly debated. Following the Government’s move in this year’s Budget to increase the top rate of stamp duty, the super-rich will now pay 7% on purchases of £2 million+ properties to 7%.

There’s also the introduction of the whopping 15% for properties bought via a company or similar bodies. Although whether this raises significant extra revenue remains to be seen.

So while many of us, may envy the super-rich and envy their lifestyles, we can say that their wealth produces some ‘trickledown effect’ that benefits the UK as a whole.

Brompton Road Tube The station which became a key WW2 command centre is up for sale for £20million

H

idden in one of London’s most exclusive areas is Brompton Road tube station - a defunct building key to protecting London during the Blitz. With its yellowed walls and blackened signs, it is hard to imagine the station was once a military hub packed with army officers tasked with saving millions of lives.

But the Underground station - just a stone’s throw from Harrods - is now up for sale for £20m, in a Ministry of Defence bid to cut costs.

The MoD is looking to relocate the building’s current occupants youngsters aspiring to join the RAF and the Royal Navy.

Brompton Road station opened in 1906 on the Piccadilly Line but closed 28 years later as passenger numbers fell. The 28,000 square foot building got a new lease of life in 1938 when it was purchased by the War Department and converted to the headquarters of the Army’s 1st Anti-Aircraft Division. Officers were charged with protecting London from incoming German bombers. It is also thought to be the place where Rudolf Hess, Hitler’s deputy, was questioned after he flew by himself to Scotland in 1941 to unsuccessfully negotiate peace.

Now the only remnants left of the site’s military past are a map showing the capital’s anti-aircraft battery areas, ammunition signs and a weapons rack.

Julian Chafer, an MoD surveyor who has been working on the building, said: “Although I’m not a military historian, I imagine that down here it would have been the same sort of thing as you see in wartime films.

“There would have been maps on the walls, there would have been perhaps an operations table and perhaps a scale model of part of the city, actually physically moving scale models about with the antiaircraft batteries so people could envisage exactly where they were in the city.”

The building is expected to command a high price when the opportunity to bid is opened up to buyers in September.

It still has the distinctive green and brown wall tiles which are particular to the Underground’s historic stations.

Potential owners hoping to beat the rush hour commute will be disappointed as the platforms and tunnels are closed off and owned by the Tube.

Mr Chafer, 47, said: “It’s in a prime location, we’ve got (Grade II*Listed) Brompton Oratory next door, Harrods just down the street, so - subject to what planning authorities say - I think it is likely to be a residential development above ground. Quite what happens down here with this site is anybody’s guess.”
