Much Ado About

NOTHING

After its successful staging of the Comedy of Errors in 2016, set in the town of Budleigh Salterton, Chiltern Shakespeare Company returns to Italy for its 2017 production Much Ado About Nothing.

M

uch Ado is one of Shakespeare’s most popular works. Claudio returns from the wars to fall instantly in love with the beautiful young Hero who agrees to marry him. This romance is contrasted by the verbal sparring between Benedick, one of Claudio’s friends, and Beatrice, Hero’s companion; old rivals who battle for the upper hand with charm and quick wits. Unfortunately, Claudio and Hero’s happiness is marred by a cynical plot which leads Claudio to believe that his beloved has been unfaithful. Mortified by the news, he jilts her at the altar. Meanwhile friends conspire to bring Benedick and Beatrice together… As ever, there is a happy ending with both couples reconciled and married. ‘Much Ado About Nothing will be staged on 14th-17th and 21st-24th June at 8pm, with matinees on both Saturdays at 2pm. The grounds will open 2 hours before each performance. Ticket prices range from £17.00 to £24.00, with concessions available for some performances. CSC is an amateur company with a highly respected reputation in the Chilterns and Thames Valley areas and their annual production is a firm fixture in the Beaconsfield calendar. Whilst its principal aim is to bring Shakespeare to life for all age groups, CSC is also committed to supporting local charities. The 2017 nominated charity is South Bucks Riding for the Disabled Association which works with junior and adult riders with a variety of disabilities, including learning difficulties, cerebral palsy and Down’s syndrome. Surplus funds from the production will be donated to SBRDA.

Performances have been staged for over 26 years at Hall Barn, Old Beaconsfield; a wonderful quintessentially English parkland setting leading down to a lake. Many audience members take full advantage of the beautiful surroundings by having a picnic in the park before the performance. For those not wishing to bring their own food, a licensed refreshment marquee is on site and picnics may be pre-ordered. The actors perform in the open air on a grass stage against the backdrop of a 300 year old sculpted yew hedge. The audience sits on raked seating in a tented auditorium and so is protected from the elements. This year, the seating will be arranged on three sides of the stage to bring the audience as close as possible to the action. There is also limited wheelchair/disabled access (please ask when booking). Two BSL signed performances are offered on Friday 16th June and on the matinee of Saturday 17th June. Full theatrical lighting and sound amplification are employed (including hearing loops). The ample parking is organised by the Beaconsfield and High Wycombe branches of The Lions who ask for voluntary contributions which all go directly to CSC’s chosen charity. ART, NATURE & CAKE! College Lake Artists, an exciting, disparate group of Artists and Makers, are delighted to be exhibiting again at College Lake Nature Reserve near Tring, during Bucks Open Studios from 10-25 June.

T

his year College Lake Artists have even more wonderful artists and makers, who are some of the area’s leading specialists in their fields. Niki Bell’s painting and print making is of British wildlife and farm animals, which are strong and have an element of wildness about them. Kerry Newth is an awardwinning Contemporary Jeweller whose work is influenced by the natural world, growth patterns, seed formations but especially the sea. Linda Cavill’s paintings and ceramics are inspired by her native Scotland and her travels further afield. Nigel Thompson’s beautiful stoneware tableware has great depth of colour in blues and bronzes, and Shirley Jones is mad about textiles, working with fine fabrics such as silk and lace, including lots of embellishment with embroidery or beading by hand. Louisa Stobbs’s passion for outdoor photography is in the art she sees all around, her year-round love for colour, light and texture show in every picture. Hazel Godfrey is a contemporary willow weaver, inspired by the beauty and versatility of natural materials. Jenny Hoole makes beautiful individual fused glass dishes, jewellery, coasters, studio glass and wall art, her inspiration coming from her fashion industry background. Paul Elliott’s sculpture uses traditional skills to hand forge hot metal to produce pieces with powerful structure, perspective, richness of character and surface texture. Amy

Saunders is our first student and is studying Fine Art. She takes inspiration from books, films, music and places. Lauren Walter loves creating stitched pictures with her sewing machine, which combines her love of drawing with sewing. College Lake Artists are also delighted to include another outdoor installation from the pupils of Brookmead School. Bucks Open Studios is the largest visual arts event in the country; over 500 artists and makers open their studios and run free exhibitions and events for the public to visit, in over 200 different venues across Buckinghamshire. Get flexible C

The Gerrards Cross workspace inspiring Buckinghamshire professionals to discover new ways of working

arlier this year creative workspace pioneer Spaces brought its innovative flexible working approach to Buckinghamshire with an impressive 25,000 sq ft hub in Chalfont Park, Gerrards Cross. The Gerrards Cross site is attracting professionals from across the region, individuals and businesses who are pioneering a new way of working. This success has resulted in Spaces expanding its presence in Buckinghamshire with a new hub at Marlow’s Globe Park. The latest Spaces offering rings true to the company’s ethos of redefining what it means to be at work - providing a social and inspirational environment with a real focus on community.

Businesses of every size are recognising the limitations of older, rigid working structures that require employees to be at a fixed desk by a fixed time. Alternative ideas are being embraced, and flexible workspace is giving businesses of every size the freedom to act fast and make better decisions. The financial and logistical benefits of working flexibly are convincing. Flexible working is providing businesses with the ability to scale-up or retract as business needs dictate. Space can be taken a desk at a time, and for as many days a week as required, rather than committing to a full-time presence. But forward-thinking business owners see well beyond these advantages. Attitudes are changing; no longer is the worker asked to adapt to the workplace, rather, businesses are championing working structures that aim to get the very best from individual employees. If you aren’t flexible you’re in a fix Indeed, those businesses not thinking in this way face the very real threat of missing out on the cream of today’s employee talent. A recent Regus survey of over 3,000 UK professionals outlines the importance placed on flexibility. The survey found that when faced with two similar jobs, more than nine in ten professionals would select the one offering flexible working. Further, more than half agreed they would “actively change job” if one with more flexible working was offered.

1 6 M AY 2 0 1 7

The millennial workforce comes with very different attitudes to work than previous generations. Workplace flexibility is no longer regarded as a perk – rather, it is expected. By positioning in a more agile fashion businesses can cast their recruitment net wider - location no longer being a handicap to securing the best employees. Environment is critical to productivity and employees and managers alike understand the potential draw-backs of homeworking. People sometimes equate flexible working with working from home but the home environment can introduce many unforeseen challenges to the working day. The routine of home life can interrupt business tasks and, for many, a lack of suitable space may result in a compromise when it comes to ergonomics and positioning correctly to enable a productive day’s work. Catch the co-working buzz Working flexibly does not mean working in isolation. The same Regus survey identifies the fact that nearly nine out of ten professionals believe co-working “helps curb loneliness for homeworkers”. Co-working is one of the biggest workplace trends of the moment, describing a workspace that is occupied by individuals from a number of different companies and that encourages networking and collaboration. Co-working hubs – such as the one at Gerrards Cross Spaces - provide all the social buzz of an office without restricting employees to fixed hours and routines. These are environments specifically created to foster innovation and drive productivity, with employee wellbeing firmly to the fore when it comes to aesthetic design decisions and the inclusion of communal areas such as cafes, bars and activity-led breakout areas. A space to suit at a place that suits The true beauty of the flexible working model is the choice of workspace type and location. Businesses simply use and pay for what they want, where they want it - a way of working far removed from the fixed desk, fixed location, fixed lease model.

Co-working is one of the biggest workplace trends of the moment, describing a workspace that is occupied by individuals from a number of different companies and that encourages networking and collaboration

Today, the flexible work conversation moves beyond the purely financial towards future strategy – namely, how to provide the best environment for workers, so that they in turn might provide their best work for you. Spaces is a creative working environment with a unique entrepreneurial ethos. Its workspaces offer an inspiring environment designed to integrate lifestyle into work, and members are encouraged to build their networks and connect. With a co-working space, breakout networking areas, meeting rooms and offices Spaces Gerrards Cross is offering Buckinghamshire professionals a truly inspirational base from which to grow their business. VOLUNTEERS Wycombe Museum has over 40 passionate volunteers who together yearly give over 4,000 hours of their time to help the Museum thrive

V

olunteers are a vital and valued part of the Museum team who help across the departments in a variety of roles. For example, using their skills and knowledge to add value to the visitor experience, help to digitise the growing collection and so much more. Individuals volunteer for a variety of reasons. To give back to their local community, to meet new people, gain new skills or connect to the history of the Wycombe District. Regardless of intention all of Wycombe Museum’s volunteers have at least one thing in common: an eagerness to contribute to this quaint local history Museum. A Museum which provides a friendly place for locals and tourists alike to discover the past, and enjoy the present over a cup of tea and slice of homemade cake. Wycombe Museum’s Volunteer Manager Rebecca is extremely proud of the amazing achievements of the volunteers. From those who joined almost 20 years ago to those who joined 2 months ago, every individual has helped the Museum excel in an unforgiving economic climate. Volunteering is of course a mutually beneficial relationship, and Rebecca is also very proud of what the Museum has done for the local community. The Museum’s volunteering programme has given many individuals a chance to gain the 1 8 M AY 2 0 1 7

experience necessary to get back into work, inspired countless young students during work placements, and given numerous retired individuals a chance to enjoy using their skills while meeting likeminded people. Since becoming managed by Wycombe Heritage and Arts Trust in December 2016, Wycombe Museum has embarked on a new and ambitious journey. One in which volunteers will play a key role. Thus, Wycombe Museum is looking for some new people to join the ever-growing group of passionate and friendly individuals looking to make a difference- and have fun while doing so! Find out how to get involved via the website www. wycombemuseum.org by calling 01494 957210, or by visiting the Museum at Priory Avenue, High Wycombe, Bucks, HP13 6PX during opening hours. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 4.30pm, Saturday 11am to 5pm and Sunday 12pm to 5pm.

wo women who have been there, done that, and cleaned up after it are Ellie Gibson and Helen Thorn, also known as The Scummy Mummies, who will be sharing their horror stories and hard-earned wisdom in Chorleywood as part of the book tour for their new book, Scummy Mummies: A Celebration of Parenting Failures, Hilarious Confessions, Fish Fingers and

Wine. They will be joined on stage by Matt Coyne, aka Man vs Baby, who became a hero for parents everywhere after he posted on Facebook about his experiences of being newly responsible for a ‘furious, sleep-murdering, unstable and incontinent, breasts-obsessed midget lodger’. Matt will be promoting his new book Dummy, which is packed with completely impractical advice for the bewildered new mum and dad that is guaranteed to have you laughing on those long, sleepless nights. Ellie, Helen and Matt will be appearing at The Junction, Christ Church, Chorleywood, WD3 5SG on Liz before & after Wednesday, May 17th at 7.30pm. Event book vouchers are £8 and included a (probably much-needed) glass of wine. The books will be £15 on the night. Also on the bill in May is a spine-tingling evening with two exceptionally talented debut crime writers: TA Cotterell, with his book What Alice Knew, and Gillian McAllister, with Everything but the Truth. Exposing truths and lies, both novels will have you hooked from the very first page. TA Cotterell and Gillian McAllister will be at The Junction, Christ Church, Chorleywood, WD3 5SG on Monday, May 15th and 7.30pm. Event book vouchers are £15, which includes both books and a glass of wine.

Can your Will be challenged AFTER YOU’VE GONE? Recently the Supreme Court upheld the wishes of a mother who had chosen to exclude her daughter from her will and leave everything to charity. Lucy Fisher, Wills, Trusts and Probate lawyer at B P Collins explains the repercussions of this ruling.

M

rs Ilott had been estranged from her mother, Mrs Jackson, when she left home at the age of 17 to live with her now husband. Mrs Jackson decided to make a will disinheriting her daughter and leaving her money to three charities instead. The will was accompanied by a letter of wishes, which explained why she had made this decision. Mrs Ilott decided to challenge her mother’s will, under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, which allows a court, to interfere with the terms of a will where it can be shown that reasonable financial provision has not been made for a spouse or child, and occasionally some other person. When the matter first came before the court, it was recognised that some provision for Mrs Ilott was appropriate and so she was awarded £50,000. However, Mrs Ilott was not happy with this and case was referred to the Court of Appeal where the amount she should receive increased to £163,000. The charities objected to this, arguing that it went against Mrs Jackson’s wishes and risked encouraging other people to challenge the terms of their relatives’ wills, potentially depriving charities of valuable legacies. The Supreme Court upheld the charities’ objections and the mother’s wishes. However, despite this ruling, we cannot draw final conclusions for those who are thinking about making or challenging a will. What we can say is that: • English law recognises the freedom of people to dispose of their assets through their will to whoever they wish and the courts should be slow in interfering with this right, except in exceptional circumstances. In this case Mrs Jackson wishes were very clear, having been set out in her will and explained in an accompanying letter of wishes. • An adult child making a claim under the Inheritance Act is only entitled to ask the court to make reasonable financial provision for their maintenance.

2 4 M AY 2 0 1 7

• This case does highlight the lack of clarity in the law on what might constitute reasonable financial provision for an adult child, however, the court needs to consider a range of factors, including the value of the deceased person’s estate and the financial resources and needs of those named in the will and those applying to vary it. They should also consider how any mental or physical disability anyone named in the will or seeking to challenge it suffers from, together with other relevant matters, such as the reasonableness of the decision to disinherit and the conduct of everybody involved. • Maintenance will usually be paid as income but, if the facts of the case justify it, it can be paid as a lump sum. Where it is desirable for a child to be provided with secure housing, this should normally be achieved by giving them a right to occupy a property for life rather than giving or buying them a property outright. This is so the value of the property remains an asset of the deceased person’s estate and can therefore ultimately be passed on to the persons or organisations named in the will. Overall, whilst some may see this as a rebalancing of the law in favour of testamentary freedom, the requirements under the Inheritance Act 1975 remain the same and an adult child can still make a successful claim against an estate if reasonable financial provision is not made for them. For advice on making a will, guidance on probate or creating a trust, come along to our Dying Matters event on 13 May. Details are on the next page.

MIMI HARKER to become Hospice patron Chiltern District Council Chairman Mimi Harker OBE is to become a patron of South Bucks Hospice and the ‘face of volunteering’ for the charity, it has been revealed.

S

he will help lead the Hospice into a new era when she steps down in May as council chairman, a role she has held for the last two years. The newly-built South Buckinghamshire Community Hospice is shortly opening at Butterfly House, a £4.8m building, and Cllr Harker will be helping to recruit the army of volunteers needed to support nurses and staff who care for patients with life-limiting illnesses. “I was so honoured and humbled to be asked to do this because the Hospice is incredibly important to people in South Bucks,” said Cllr Harker, a mother-of-two who has been a councillor in Chiltern since 1999. “I was absolutely blown away by the wonderful new building and I am full of admiration for Chief Executive Officer Jo Woolf and her team who have watched their dream come true brick by brick, day by day.” She added: “I am very excited at the prospect of taking on this role because I have so much respect for Jo’s belief in how Hospice care should be delivered. I feel a strong empathy with the passion behind her ethos in delivering care to people at such a vulnerable time in their lives. “The Hospice care is so very different from the norm, because it’s very holistic and takes into account every aspect of the human being. It’s not just about their physical health; the Hospice prioritises the palliative mental health and well-being and ensures that their families also receive the help care and love they need.”

Jo Woolf said: “We are overjoyed to have such a distinguished and energetic personality join our team as patron. Mimi has been a fantastic local servant for the public in her area and I have no doubt she will be a wonderful asset to the Hospice and its patients.” “I have asked Mimi to become our face of volunteering for us because we need the public to support our team in providing the care so many patients and their families require. Less than 3% of our funding comes from the Government and we raise the rest of the money ourselves just to pay for the day-to-day services. This is why we are reliant on the stewardship and goodwill of volunteers.” The news of Mimi Harker’s involvement comes a few months after Wycombe MP Steve Baker was unveiled as a Hospice patron. Mrs Woolf said another extremely well-known local person would shortly be announced as the charity’s third highprofile patron. Meanwhile, Cllr Harker urged the public to join her by becoming a volunteer. “Even if you have as little as two hours a week to spare, we’d love to hear from you,” she said. “There are numerous roles here such as drivers, gardeners, collection boxes collectors, receptionists or simply for people who do the meeting and greeting. “Moving forward, it’s really important that, in general, people’s attitude to endof-life care changes. It has to be something we can talk about because if we cannot talk about it we cannot get the best outcome for patients.” THE DETAILS If you want to join the Hospice team as a volunteer, contact volunteers@sbhospice.org.uk or call 01494 464045

Chef Laurie Gear May Recipe & Kitchen News

D

uring the month of May our thoughts turn to the very first fresh garden produce entering our kitchen. Asparagus is always a popular choice and here I have paired it with the king of mushrooms, namely the morels, to garnish and compliment a superb cut of wild salmon. If unavailable, a quality sustainable farmed salmon would work well. New Season buttered Jersey Royal Potatoes, and freshly picked English watercress also come to the fore and could add to this dish with harmonious results.

Wild Salmon with Morel Mushrooms and Asparagus Serves Six Ingredients 6 x fillet of wild salmon - portions about 150g each (skin on) 1/2 large lemon 650g Morel Mushrooms (choose small ones, if possible) 3 shallots (chopped) 150g butter 150 ml fish stock 2 tbsp. dry white wine 1 tbsp. double cream 12 medium asparagus olive oil for frying salt and freshly ground black pepper Method

1. Trim the stalks off the mushrooms, wash the mushrooms very briefly, but do not soak. 2. Sweat the shallots in 30g butter. 3. When they are soft, add the mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. 4. Cook gently for 5 minutes or until the mushrooms release their liquid. 5. Add the wine and boil and reduce for 2 minutes, then add the fish stock and reduce for 3 minutes. After, stir in the cream, followed by the remaining butter, cut into small cubes. To make a glossy sauce, add a good squeeze of lemon juice. 6. Heat the oven to 190C. In a non-stick

3 4 M AY 2 0 1 7

ovenproof pan cook the salmon, skin down, in a few drops of olive oil over a high heat. When the skin is nicely browned, place the pan in the oven for 6 minutes – this keeps the flesh pink and moist. 7. Trim the asparagus. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and add salt – blanch the asparagus for a couple of minutes until just cooked, but still with vibrant green colour. 8. Add a little olive oil to serve.

To Serve

Place the asparagus on the serving plates. Place the fillet of wild salmon on top, add the sauce and the delicious morels to finish.

HENLEY FESTIVAL PRESENTS

VISUAL ARTS FOR 2017 Works by Paul Day, Simon Gudgeon and Stephen Newby will be among this year’s packed visual arts programme at Henley Festival 2017

A

gainst the unique backdrop of Henley Festival’s stunning riverside setting, works by some of the UKs most exciting contemporary artists will include large-scale sculptures, immersive outdoor light installations and a string of pop-up galleries. The festival’s sculpture garden will include pieces by renowned British sculptor Paul Day, who created the official Iraq and Afghanistan memorial unveiled by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in March this year. Known for his high relief works and widely recognised as a leader in his field, Day’s best known works include the Battle of Britain London Monument on the Victoria Embankment, and the Meeting Place in St Pancras International Station. The lawns of the festival site will showcase a series of installations, sculptures and interactive artworks from leading artists including Ivan Black, who’ll be showcasing his stunning kinetic work alongside Richard Jackson and Sally Fawkes’ expressive glass sculptures, as well as Simon Gudgeon’s minimalist, semiabstract forms in his signature smooth style, and Dawn Conn’s whimsical sculptures inspired by fairy tales, romance and simple pleasures. Stephen Newby’s Beating Heart will dominate the festival’s Riverside Lawn, a beautiful installation that demonstrates the artist’s mission to challenge preconceived notions about the nature of materials and their possible forms. As the Festival moves from day to night, David Ogle’s illuminated forest of light, with its canopy of interlocking, glowing branches, will bathe the lawns in pools of neon light, while Jig Cochrane’s Jigantic epic light garden will bloom with magical giant illuminated glowers. Festival-goers can also create 4 6 M AY 2 0 1 7

their own multi-coloured light show simply by talking to trees, as part of Ithaca’s interactive installation, Whispering Trees. Contemporary art mogul Eddie Lock has teamed up with regular collaborator Liam West of urban art gallery Beautiful Crime to once again showcase an array of striking urban photography, painting and mixed media artworks that will adorn the walls of the Art Bar. Newcomers to the Eddie Lock & Beautiful Crime Galleries this year include New York make-up artist Sonja Yaso, and Dutch artist Hayo Sol, whose fans range from actress Denise Richards to Prince Albert of Monaco, alongside works by Fin-Dac, Goldie, Pam Glew, Dan Balwin, Illuminati, K-Guy, Russell Marshall and many others who are turning heads in today’s art world. Elsewhere in the festival grounds, quirky work from The Connor Brothers will be on display in the new Jazz Garden Gallery, whilst visitors will be invited to sit for their very own stitched portrait by Harriet Riddell. Riddell has travelled the world with her sewing machine, stitching deeply personal portraits and landscapes including in the slums of Nairobi and the tea fields of the Himalayas. Henley Festival’s spectacular Visual Arts programme sets it apart from other festivals, with organisers working with top galleries worldwide and presenting the perfect opportunity for festival goers seeking to invest in great art. ODETTE Designer Lingerie and swimwear fitted perfectly for you

N

estled in the heart of Old Amersham is lingerie, nightwear and swimwear boutique, Odette. With discreet frontage it could well have been somewhere that you have passed by before, however, once through the doors, welcomed with stunning displays and a beautiful aroma it is most certainly a place that you will be drawn back to time and time again. Boutique owner Liz has a raft of experience in many aspects of the lingerie industry, in buying, retail, fitting, design, manufacturing and teaching. All of this – coupled with her desire to see her clients leave the boutique smiling – goes to create the perfect atmosphere and service. “Many women will be wearing a bra that is not the best fit for them” says Liz. “Correct fitting is so important not only for the style and the look that it creates, but also in looking after your body” Liz recommends a fitting roughly on a six monthly basis as our bodies can easily change shape and size within this time. More often if there are other situations in the mix – weight change, pregnancy, health reasons and so on. The discreet environment at Odette offers complete privacy for your fitting with flexible changing space that can ‘open up’ for more room to have maybe a mother and daughter or sisters enjoying their fitting sessions together. With Liz or one of her team on hand to assist with advice, suggestions, fetching various sizes yet also managing your privacy it really makes for a truly wonderful experience. Interestingly, Liz and her team can even advise you on the correct way to put a bra on to ensure

6 4 M AY 2 0 1 7

that you get the perfect position. Liz has secured top brands such as Stella McCartney, the best fitting French brand Empreinte as well as the truly aspirational brand La Perla – being one of just two boutiques outside of London to stock them. Upstairs, above the lingerie and nightwear is the one stop holiday shop. Liz and her team carry through their expertise and service to help you find the perfect swimwear to suit you. With brands such as Melissa Odabash, Stella McCartney, Australian design Jets and Prima Donna (offering cupped size swimwear) the range in stock is constantly changing so do be sure to keep checking what they have. Beautiful accessories such as bags, flip-flops, hats and jewellery ensure that you can get everything you need to feel fabulous whilst lounging in the sun. If a fitting for lingerie, new swimwear or even just some accessories is what you are looking for then feel free to pop in or call to book an appointment and Liz and her team will be on hand to help you with your needs. have been a dental nurse for over 10 years and joined Uppal in launching Sorriso Dentistry, in Old Beaconsfield, last year. I take huge pride in my job and really enjoy giving support to dentists chairside, especially when it involves implant dentistry and more advanced, complex cases such as smile makeovers or rehabilitations. My role at Sorriso also brings with it further responsibilities including that of treatment coordinator. As the primary contact for both new and existing patients, it is my duty to ensure that their experience with us – from booking their first appointment to the completion of their treatment – is a smooth and positive one. Our patients are our ambassadors and most of our new clients come from recommendation. We carry out a range of treatments on a wide age range of patients! We see a lot of children and our younger patients need support and encouragement as well as clear explanations and positive feedback. This ensures that they build confidence in us as their dental team and makes a visit to the dentist an enjoyable experience rather than something to be dreaded. Any advanced or implant cases we treat might bring with it unchartered territory for the patient, and I am

always on hand to answer any queries, offer reassurance and provide further explanation if needed. Feedback from patients is that this additional support can prove invaluable, especially for those who are anxious and prefer to have such conversations away from the dentist or dental chair. Sorriso is a beautiful place to work, and one of the best aspects is that I am the one who receives the lovely feedback about the practice and the relaxed feel the waiting area creates. I take great pride in being part of such an amazing team and I love the fact that my job enables me to totally transform what many people consider a stressful experience into a pleasurable one. WALKING

SIMPLY TAKING STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH

W

ith everyone now counting their steps on a daily basis thanks to cheap-to-buy, easy-to-use fitness trackers it seems that good, oldfashioned walking is back in vogue when it comes to keeping fit. The latest trend comes as no surprise to heart health expert Dr Azad Ghuran who says that walking has always been a great way of keeping yourself in shape – whatever your age. Dr Ghuran, Consultant Cardiologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital said that walking leads to improvement in general health, has been proven to increase aerobic capacity and reduce body weight and blood pressure. As with all exercise, walking burns calories – someone who weighs 60kg who walks briskly at about 4 miles per hour for 30 minutes uses up around 150 calories. It has also been shown to reduce the risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer. “During exercise the heart needs to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to other organs. Walking increases the amount of blood the muscles in your legs and arms need to move and it is the heart’s job to pump more blood to the cells so with increased activity the heart has to pump more blood by

6 8 M AY 2 0 1 7

increasing heart rate,” said Dr Ghuran. “As the heart gets stronger it will send out more blood with each heart beat meaning it becomes a stronger and more efficient pump. “There’s no need to go straight into ten mile hikes. But a steady start, increasing your speed and distance as you get fitter and more confident, is a great way to get your heart pumping and improving your general health.” Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Harpenden Hospital Paul Whittingham-Jones added: “Walking reduces lower back pain and improves bone strength and there is evidence that, in people with arthritic joints, walking actually reduces joint pain. “The great thing about walking is that, provided you have the right sort of footwear, it is very low impact exercise and so does not damage your joints in the way running, tennis, squash and most contact sports can.” “In fact the extra exercise can help you lose weight which, in turn, takes more pressure off joints such as knees and hips.” Mr Whittingham-Jones also said that walking is an integral part to most post-op rehab regimes whether the patient is recovering from sports surgery to the hip or knee or convalescing from hip or knee replacement surgery. www.spirehealthcare.com

The perfect SUMMER

BODY If your goal is to lose weight and get in shape, why not try one of Courthouse Clinics’ body contouring treatments, to stay on track or give your progress a boost?

O

ur popular Cool Tech Fat Freezing treatment offers a fast, effective way to permanently eliminate stubborn pockets of fat from problem areas such as thighs, tummy, back and arms. As the name suggests, Fat Freezing (also known as cryolipolysis) works by freezing fat cells, causing them to die off and be eliminated naturally through the body’s own lymphatic system. This pain-free treatment is a great non-invasive alternative to liposuction, and achieves visible results after just one session. Another popular pain-free body contouring treatment at Courthouse Clinics is Endermologie. Bikini season might still be months away, but summer bodies are made in the winter, so now is the ideal time to begin a course. Endermologie is scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite, boost circulation and improve skin tone. A special handheld massage device is rolled over problem areas, breaking down the fat, water and toxins that give skin that uneven, dimpled appearance. During the process, blood flow is increased, skin is exfoliated and fat metabolism is increased – resulting in noticeably firmer, smoother, toned-looking skin. Book today and banish those lumps and bumps by the time the sun reappears! If skin tightening is your goal, then our Radiofrequency body treatments could be exactly what you’re looking for. Our Accent XL radiofrequency heats the surface of the body to instantly tighten loose skin – often an issue following dramatic New Year weight loss. Accent also targets the subcutaneous tissue, to help break down fatty deposits, so it can be used to target cellulite on the arms, abdomen, buttocks and thighs. Our Soprano skin tightening is another minimally-invasive treatment option for firmer, younger-looking skin. Using high-intensity infrared light, Soprano painlessly heats up the skin’s deeper layers, stimulating collagen production and improving surface skin tone and tautness. It can be used on almost any region of the body, and is an excellent option for women post-pregnancy. Whatever your aesthetic concerns, we have a selection of suitable treatment options. A happy face is a young face! Dr Lucy Liu, Acupuncturist at The Marlow Clinic, explains the link between health and beauty

T

hese days many people now understand more about acupuncture, which has been used for over 3,000 years and is recognised as being an effective natural treatment for pain relief, with no side effects. Medically it is a particularly effective treatment for conditions such as:

• • • • • • •

Joint, shoulder & lower back problems Poor circulation, Rheumatism, Arthritis and Gout Stress & nervous system issues, High blood pressure Diabetes, Weight loss Migraine, Insomnia Strokes and paralysis recovery Infertility

And, acupuncture also delivers cosmetic benefits. We all know that being healthy on the inside and sleeping well make you feel better, and so help you also to look your best on the outside. But conditions such as chronic pain, poor circulation, stress and anxiety will end up exhausting your mind and body, as well as sapping your energy and your spirits – and this soon starts to show. Yes, acupuncture is very effective at treating exterior conditions such as weight control, facial wrinkles and skin problems for example, but real beauty starts from the inside with a healthy body, good circulation, no pain, lower stress and better sleep. Being healthy and feeling good makes you happy and we all know that a happy face is a young face! A consultation with Dr Lucy Liu at The Marlow Clinic is a good starting point to check on your overall health, to discuss any issues of concern and maybe try a course of treatment – if only to increase your energy and positivity and to start to see a change in your health and in your life. WHY it pAYS property owners dividends to opt For

technologically Advanced replacement Windows

W

e all know it makes sense to replace inefficient, outdated or inefficient existing windows, given the ever rising costs of electricity and gas, with the most affordable thermally efficient replacement windows in the UK marketplace. However, the upfront costs can be a reason to keep putting off improving the aesthetics, living environment and keep putting up with thermally inefficient out dated windows and doors. Given home buyers now expect a property to be fully double glazed (or a large reduction on the asking price), one should be pragmatic and if you don’t

7 6 M AY 2 0 1 7

have the cash flow to replace all the windows and doors in one go, then do them in stages, starting with the ones in your living rooms and/ or bedrooms first, so you get the maximum benefit from stage one of your home improvement investment. Technological advances in the United Kingdom double glazing industry over the last 10 years or so have caused the first and second generations of replacement double glazing (which at the time was a significant improvement on single glazing) to be superseded by high performance “thermally broken” energy saving efficient windows, enabling far better energy ratings to be achieved. WER’s (Window Energy Ratings) were introduced by the British Government many years ago to help UK consumers know how thermally efficient any particular combination of frame, gaskets and glass sealed units were. Back on 1st October 2010, the Building Regulations changed so that from then on double glazing installers, suppliers and home owners had a legal responsibility if replacing windows, to replace them with either an independently tested “C” rated, “B” rated or “A” rated window, with until fairly recently, an “A” being the highest rating available, and “C” being the minimum standard permitted under the current

“independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd have been replacing windows in the UK for over 30 years”

Building Regulations. This legislation brought about a major sea change in the UK double glazing industry, whereby it had to suddenly scrap any outdated non-thermally broken window products (which were unable to achieve the minimum “C” rating) for higher quality, better designed, more expensive, thermally broken products, whether or not the window frames made out of aluminium, timber or UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride). The resultant improved internal living environment and financial savings on energy bills for property owners has led to much of the UK housing stock being better insulated, so much so that home owners looking to sell their properties with older outdated double or single glazing are severely disadvantaged, or at the very least not able to achieve the sale price they had hoped for. For any double glazing manufacturers to achieve a decent window energy rating they need a frame that is thermally broken (i.e. where the outer pane and inner pane are separated, so that the cold on the outside cannot interfere with the warmth on the inside) and a high specification sealed unit with a warm edge spacer bar separating the inner and outer glass panes which is filled with an inert gas like Argon, which not only insulates, it helps with sound reduction too. Recent technological advances now enable certain UPVC or PVCu products to obtain even greater energy ratings than “A”. Some companies use triple glazing to achieve better than an “A” rating, whereas others have opted to improve their double glazed frames, making them more robust as well as more thermally efficient in the process. Triple glazing sealed units costs more than double glazed sealed units, simply because there are two warm edge spacer bars, rather than one, and three panes of glass rather than two. This means triple glazed units cost more to replace if they break down or crack than double glazed units, a factor worth noting if choosing between these two options. Independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd have been replacing windows in the UK for over 30 years. They have recently switched all their PVCu casement windows with side hung and top hung opening vents to A+ as standard. The outer window sash on the bespoke PVCu windows they supply and install now has six chambers increasing the thermal break between the inside and outside, as well as the robustness of the product. They also now offer a PVCu triple glazed window with a slimmer outer frame that has an A++ energy rating. As it is now possible to have professionally fitted bespoke A+ energy rated double glazed windows installed for far less than A+ or A++ triple glazing, it makes better financial sense to invest in double glazed A+ windows. If the most thermally efficient windows on the planet are not well fitted, they won’t perform, so it is important to select an experienced

installer you can trust to do a professional job on your property. The dividends therefore, in terms of lower heating bills start immediately after having well fitted thermally broken energy saving windows installed. It therefore pays to have them all done, even if in phases. To find out more about the potential replacement window options on your particular property, along with free professional advice as to which type and style of windows would add the most value to your home (whilst saving on heating bills), why not ask family owned and run independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Windows for a free no-obligation consultation with one of their experienced experts by calling 01494 854266 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk M AY 2 0 1 7 7 7

Harrods of London launches first-ever furniture collection

Harrods of London is pleased to announce the launch of the store’s inaugural furniture collection. The collection of upholstery, casegoods and occasional pieces has been designed in-house by Harrods Interiors. This is the first time that Harrods – which has been retailing furniture since the early 1880s – has released its own designs, under the store’s own label, Harrods of London.

O

nly the most prestigious partners have been selected to collaborate with on the collection. Twills and velvets have been sourced from Saville Row’s finest suppliers, upholstery services are by heritage British furniture manufacturer Artistic Upholstery and casegoods have been created by world-renowned Italian furniture brand, Porada. The Harrods of London collection draws inspiration from Art-Deco jewellery and tailoring. Each piece combines an elegant and timeless silhouette with

unexpected embellishments and detailing, giving the collection an understated yet intriguing aesthetic. Annalise Fard, Director of Home at Harrods: “We are thrilled to be launching Harrods of London’s first furniture collection this spring. Designing a furniture collection in-house was the next step after the relaunch of Harrods Home four years ago. Since then, we have introduced new brands in a range of styles across the furniture department, curated collections of lighting and accessories, and moulded Harrods into a design destination like no other. The elegant designs created by the Harrods Interiors team bring together contemporary understated finishes and the finest materials. A nod to Harrods heritage and the 1930s, brings an air of sophistication to the collection; I love how the clasps of each of the occasional pieces encase the marble table-tops, so evocative of the solitaire setting of a ring.” The collection is the latest addition to Harrods of London, the store’s own label, which includes womenswear, menswear, layette and luxury linens. Butter-soft leathers and fine wool and cashmere feature in each category, and the furniture collection is in keeping with this sophisticated aesthetic. The lowdown on

lawnmowers BY HANNAH STEPHENSON

There are so many lawnmowers on the market these days rotary and cylinder, corded electric, cordless petrol, batterypowered and state-of-the-art robotic types. But which one is right for your budget, and right for your lawn?

L

awnmower prices range from under £100 to thousands for elaborate sit-on types, but expect to pay at least a few hundred if you have a fair sized lawn and want something that will last. In our environmentally-conscious world, battery-powered options - once dismissed by lawn lovers because of the batteries' dubious staying power and need to replace them after a winter in storage - have become more sophisticated as Lithium-Ion batteries don't lose power like the old ones. Bosch stopped manufacturing petrol mowers in 2010 to go eco-friendly and has long been extolling the virtues of Lithium-ion batteries which, it claims, perform as petrol equivalents but with low noise, low vibrations and savings on running costs.

So which lawnmower will cut it with you? BATTERY POWER Battery-operated mowers are generally lighter machines, don't pump out carbon monoxide and are much quieter than their petrol counterparts. You don't have to worry about a cable or expend energy pulling a cord to start them either, as they start at the touch of a button. The disadvantages of battery mowers are that you have to remember to recharge the batteries and they won't stripe your lawn as effectively as a heavier machine. PETROL POWER Petrol-driven motors may be better for bigger lawns and where you need plenty of power on slopes or uneven surfaces. There are push and self-propelled varieties, having throttle control which eases the pushing ability of the user. Petrol mowers give a good striped effect as they are heavier and, 8 0 M AY 2 0 1 7

although they need servicing, it could be argued that a well-maintained, good quality petrol mower will outlast most electric ones. Users also won't encounter the cumbersome cables of electric models and the need for safety cut-out plugs. ELECTRIC POWER A corded electric mower is fine for a smaller suburban garden, if you're not bothered about keeping the cable out of the way of the blades. Electric 'hover' mowers are the cheapest, but can produce a disappointing finish, often require a spanner to adjust the mowing height and don't always collect grass efficiently. Ultimately, your choice should depend on your lawn type and size. If you have a small or medium-sized lawn, a battery-operated mower or light electric type should be fine for your needs. CYLINDER OR ROTARY? Cylinder mowers are for the lawn perfectionist who wants a finer cut and bowling green finish. They are ideal for flat lawns and short grass, but struggle with long or wet grass. If you want the exercise, opt for a push variety. If you don't, self-propelled is the way to go. Rotary mowers are better all-rounders, cut better in wet or long grass and cope well with uneven, bumpy surfaces. Their blades can be easily changed to boot. OR THE LAZY WAY… Imagine never having to mow your lawn again! With Automated Robot Lawn Mowers all the hard work is done for you allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy your garden, rather than working in it. The principle behind the robotic mower is simple. It cuts the grass little and often in an irregular pattern. Because the grass clippings are so small they quickly dissolve back into the lawn, adding nutrients back into the soil, for a thicker, greener, healthier looking lawn. If it finds any objects in its way, it will stop, turn and cut the lawn in another direction. Prices can range from about £500 up to about £4,000. But real gardeners may relish the exercise that goes with a mower they can push, and the pleasure of seeing the well-groomed green carpet they've created at the end of their workout.

Our Showroom Managers Katja from Henley-uponThames and Lucy from Beaconsfield answer customers questions about choosing the right windows and doors: How can I make sure my new window or door design is authentic to the period of my house? “Homeowners should look for a reputable window company which is able to tailor their product line to fit the period of their property, consequently enhancing it’s architectural integrity. All aesthetic aspects should be carefully considered including selecting the correct timbers, colours and decorative options whilst also taking in to account existing items and those of neighbours to keep the property in keeping with its surroundings.” Katja What materials are best for windows and doors to balance authenticity with longevity and low maintenance? “Ultimately, timber is most authentic and lasts longest with modern production methods and has a low maintenance. You just have to repaint it once every 8 years, or so.” Katja What regulations apply to new front doors? “If your property is in a conservation area then we just have to ensure that the new designs are in keeping with the existing ones. If you are in a listed property then there are tigheter restrictions and we recommend you seek the advice of your local authority to find out what these are before you proceed with a project.” Katja Can I have new windows that are single glazed or do they have to be double glazed? “They don’t have to be double glazed (unless it’s a listed property with restrictions). However, double glazing is the way to go to increase energy efficiency of the building.” Lucy

Can I introduce colour to my home with the windows and doors? “Gone are the days when all windows were finished in white gloss and every front door came in a standard colour. Now you can choose a shade that fits your personality and is perfectly in keeping with your property. Jack Brunsdon & Son offer a close matching service to the Farrow & Ball paint range. Think about combining multiple colours on one item such as a grey front door with a cream frame. Grey has emerged as the colour of choice in recent years. It’s a very versatile shade balancing modernity with a sense of heritage equally at home in a traditional townhouse, period villa or country cottage. Mid-green tones are also providing popular, think National Trust and English Heritage, and work well when replacing windows in country homes and period cottages. Alternatively, bold primary colours are ideal for Victorian and Georgian townhouses and add personality and impact whilst also giving character.” Lucy

ALWAYS A PLEASURE never a chore! A few years ago, as we casually got to know each other at the school gates, we quickly discovered that we had far more in common than simply being somebody’s mum. Here we were, two 40 something women, both itching to ditch the career breaks and take on something slightly more challenging than putting together packed lunches or slaving over papier-mâché solar systems.

A

lthough our industry backgrounds were poles apart, we felt our complementary skills and genuine friendship were more than enough to support one another through the trials and tribulations of building our own business, whilst still having to juggle the demands of kids, dogs and not to mention husbands! So, one summer’s afternoon, with a couple of glasses of wine under our belts, we decided it was time to stop talking and start doing. With a mutual passion for all things interior design, we had both become disheartened with the offerings available for our own homes and truly believed that we could bring something new to the table. The high street is awash with the latest trending colours and designs but trends are just that. Purchases can be fun and uplifting but lack quality and may be out of fashion in a few months’ time. At the other end of the spectrum, there are plenty of high-end retailers who offer great quality but at a price. These sizeable price tags may leave you feeling compelled to keep hold of something for the rest of your life. But will you still love it in twenty years time? Somewhere in the middle you can find good products with a reasonable price tag but the offering is often a tad bland or too eclectic. We felt it was time to redress the balance. 8 4 M AY 2 0 1 7

Layered Lounge is focused on providing customers with design led, quality products at an affordable price. Whilst we always keep an eye on the latest trends, we are not driven by them and our product ranges are selected for their versatility and timeless appeal. We want to encourage people to think about layering when designing their rooms. It’s the process of adding items to a room to give it depth, texture, warmth, personality, making it look effortless, even if a lot of effort has gone into it! We have taken great care selecting products from around the world that are practical for everyday use but stand out from the crowd, having sourced tableware and textiles from some of the best producers in Portugal or closer to home lampshades and cushions from exciting new designers in the UK and Channel Islands.

Alongside the core interior ranges, there are some seasonal outdoor products from Australia that will appeal to adults and children alike. With summer just around the corner, there’s a range of fun, colourful items from funky in inflatables that are big enough to share to beach games, drinks holders and beach towels that the kids will want to get out of the pool for. We are often asked if layering is suitable for any type of home and any size of budget? Our resounding answer is always yes! Layers can be achieved through the use of various home accessories such as rugs, cushions, lighting and photo frames and we have an abundance of beautiful designs for you to choose from. Knowing where to start when designing your rooms can be daunting but if you follow some of these simple tips you’ll be well on your way to creating your dream space. Begin by placing your big items of furniture in the room and then add in smaller pieces, trying where possible to link them together so that the room has a cohesive look. Taking photos during this stage is a good idea as we tend to be more objective when viewing things through a lens. It also helps you keep a track of the layouts you like / don’t like. Move the pieces around until you are completely happy with the look. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colour. The older we get the more we seem to shy away from strong, statement colours, yet a room can quickly be transformed with the simple addition of colourful objects or furnishing such as cushions and throws. Be bold, seek out items that are different and bright. Remember size DOES matter. Effective layering uses a variety of sizes; a collection of only small items can get lost while too many large pieces can appear overwhelming. Variation is key, so place items of differing heights and widths together for greater impact. Touch and feel is important too. Don’t forget that differing textures can really help create a welcoming environment and can be applied to everything from cushions to lamp bases. Combining different textures adds depth and can make even the most minimalist of rooms feel so much more inviting. Plants and flowers, real or faux, can be the most natural way to add texture and colour.

It’s all about the grouping! Vignettes - the grouping of objects - is a simple but effective way of making a design statement without breaking the bank. This can be anything from a cluster of sleek photo frames to light catching candle votives or some favourites pieces collected on your travels. Above all, remember that just like the people who live in it, the rooms in our homes are unique. Approach each room as an individual space and have fun! Creating a home should always be a pleasure, never a chore.

home swimming pool design has come a long way since the 1970’s when pool houses were simple pine chalets. today, origin, the uK’s original luxury indoor pool company, designs and builds pools with the same style, quality and finish as a high spec home. here, it has outlined the five features that are popular among families enhancing their homes with these spectacular builds.

8 6 M AY 2 0 1 7

1. Seating Area

The pool house is more than a place to swim for many families. It is an extra living space where you can make memories during the summer months or a place to watch the cold of winter pass by. With this in mind, seating areas, complete with additional appliances such as televisions and sound systems, are now a common feature in many family pool houses.

2. Additional rooms

It’s an ideal space for entertaining, which often means there is a need for multiple rooms. A changing room always comes in handy and can be built to your requirements. This might include a shower room, toilet or changing facilities. A kitchen or bar area is also popular. They will add entertainment value to any pool house, whilst ensuring you can play the perfect host from the comfort of your pool.

“Seating areas, complete with additional appliances such as televisions and sound systems, are now a common feature in many family pool houses”

tHe detAiLS Origin has over 35 years’ experience building award-winning swimming pools. The company can work with you to incorporate these features into your pool house, whilst ensuring that it is in keeping with your family’s individual taste and style. To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996

3. Colour tiles

The tiles lining your pool can change the colour of the water. Brown tiles give the water a soft green appearance which exudes a feeling of luxury when paired with soft cream and beige tiles. Similarly, grey tiles can make the colour of the water appear bluer.

4. Large Format pool tiles

Large format tiles offer a modern, sleek and contemporary design. They are cost-effective and cover large expanses of space. Plus, they are easy to clean due to minimal grout joints. This makes them the perfect choice for any homeowner.

5. Feature Wall

A feature wall is a great way to remove a large expanse of plain wall and there are some very creative ways to make an impact using interior design. Choose compelling artwork that is suitable for a pool environment or create an eye-catching pattern on the wall. M MAAYY 22001177 8975

The Perfect Blend of

STYLE & COMFORT

Every now and then a manufacturer designs a product that breaks new ground and introduces a new standard of quality within their field. Himolla have taken this step with the introduction of the Cumuly reclining action which features in many of their chairs and sofas across the range.

A

simple two stage reclining process that initially raises the integral footrest and allows the backrest to move with the seat for the most supportive seating positon that you can experience. And then if desired, a separate adjustment for the back angle will take your body into the most reclined and restful state where relaxation is guaranteed. No more spare footstools taking up space in the lounge as the footrest retracts from sight leaving clean lines and less clutter. There is a choice of manual recliner or powered mechanism for more precise body position and if desired, one can opt for a rechargeable battery system, negating any trailing wires across the floor. Himolla have also introduced a swivel recliner with a lift feature for the less able. So now it is possible to have an assistive chair with modern, contemporary styling and the full range of leather and fabric options. FineBack Furniture introduced the Himolla range four 9 6 M AY 2 0 1 7

years ago and in that time, they have grown to become one of the largest displays in London and the South East. With so many options it is essential to seek good advice and David Holloway from FineBack is accustomed to taking your wish list and translating it into a bespoke product, fit for your needs. If you believe that you could benefit from a professional seating assessment, then visit FineBack Furniture in London Colney. The modern showroom displays a wide range of seating that you can experience for yourself and then when you are ready, make an informed choice.
