THE CHILTERNS

VINTAGE CINEMA Life Magazine caught up with the Amersham couple, Deborah and Darren Henderson, who’ve created The Chilterns Vintage Cinema, launching in March 2017.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO SET UP THE CHILTERNS VINTAGE CINEMA? We’re constantly looking for fun and interesting things to do but often find ourselves having to make a trip to London. We’re huge film fans and wanted to offer locals a chance to see exciting cinema experiences closer to home. - Darren HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH SUCH AN EXCITING AND BIG IDEA? I’m the former Senior Vice President for Sony Music UK so I have lots of event and marketing experience. However, the technical requirements of producing high-end cinematic experiences is something we’ve needed to learn along the way - Darren I’ve run my own design agency for 14 years and have therefore been responsible for all the designbased work and customer experience. - Deborah WHERE CAN AUDIENCES CATCH A CHILTERNS VINTAGE CINEMA SCREENING? We have 4 unusual locations for screenings including The Hell-Fire Caves in West Wycombe, the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in Quainton Aylesbury, The Kings Chapel, Kings Arm, Old Amersham and the Natural History Museum at Tring where we’ve even had to discuss moving a killer whale just to fit the screen in! - Deborah WHY IS THIS SO DIFFERENT FROM SEEING A FILM IN A TRADITIONAL MULTIPLEX? We’re all about the experience. The locations are key and have never shown films previously. The ambiance

12 MARCH 2017

of the space after you’ve passed through the vintage cinema entrance is something we’ve worked hard on. We’ve also invested heavily in the latest technology to ensure the picture and sound is of the highest quality - Deborah CAN YOU GIVE US AN EXAMPLE? At the Hell-Fire Cave screenings the audience will wonder through the caves at night, finding clues to horror films from the past. A pop-up bar will serve chilling bloody cocktails and traditional pic n mix. Once inside the main auditorium the feast begins with a hot food service. For the Silence Of The Lambs screening liver with fava beans cooked in Chianti will haunt the audience as the film begins - Deborah WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE CHILTERNS VINTAGE CINEMA? Our season 2 programme will be announced in late March, we have secured several locations for our summer outdoor season and a semi-permanent home for a 5 week run of Christmas films - Darren CAN YOU STILL GET TICKETS TO SCREENINGS? Although some of the dates have sold out there are still plenty of tickets left for the screenings from April onwards. - Darren THE DETAILS For a full list go to www.vintagecinema.co.uk

A NEW WAY TO WORK Gerrard’s Cross is at the forefront of workplace innovation

The days of slogging to a central office to work a fixed amount of hours before battling the journey home are surely numbered.

H

eadlines about commuting cost and travel chaos are an almost weekly occurrence, and forward-thinking businesses and professionals are looking beyond this outdated approach to discover newer, more productive ways of working. In December, workspace pioneer Spaces opened in Chalfont Park, providing professionals in the area with a place to work built around the concept of networking and shared ideas. The hub has really taken off since opening, and now plays host to businesses of every size and from a variety of industries. So what makes Spaces different? Whilst the offices of yesteryear were typically built to be functional and little more, Spaces seeks to inspire through great workspace design. It’s an environment that integrates lifestyle into the workplace - a place where people are happy to come and do their best work. Key to the Spaces ethos is a focus on peer-to-peer interaction. Spaces members are encouraged to build their network and connect with others in the building, with the result that solutions to business needs or problems are often found simply by talking to neighbour

professionals. By providing social and inspirational environments with a real focus on community, Spaces is redefining what it means to be ‘at work.’ The Chalfont Park hub recognises the need for different types of workspace at different times of the day. So, the site combines shared co-working space with breakout areas for informal catch-ups, meeting rooms and private offices. All can be used on a flexible, as needed basis. Working flexibly means getting a better balance between work hours and leisure-time, finding patterns that better suit the lifestyle of employees rather than asking them to conform to rigid working structures. A more flexible approach is widely understood to deliver greater benefits in terms of wellbeing and productivity. According to the latest research, today’s typical commuter spends an average of 8.1 hrs per week travelling to and from work – the equivalent of an entire working day. For the vast majority of people this time is unproductive and stressful, resulting in a negative impact on overall performance. With its Chalfont Park hub, and other sites across the globe, Spaces is offering an alternative to this pattern, providing an environment geared towards networking, creativity and great work. The André Garrett Restaurant is a stylish and sophisticated salon that captures the spirit of an era where Nancy Astor famously entertained the Cliveden Set in the 1920’s and 30’s – brought back to life with verve and an air of eclectic modernity. From the clever re-working of great classics to innovative contemporary dishes, André Garrett’s cooking is defined by craftsmanship and old school attention to detail. Confident and creative British cooking based on a hard-earned understanding and lifelong passion for French culinary traditions. A highly-considered approach to creating inspiring dishes that carry André’s deftness and signature lightness of touch - all served without pomp or pretention. André’s love of locally sourced and fresh produce means our three course à la carte and eight course tasting menus are governed by English ingredients, guided by the seasons. TOP TIPS FOR BRIDAL SKIN By Miss Sherina Balaratnam MBBS, MRCS, MSc(UCL) Surgeon and Medical Director, S-Thetics Clinic Beaconsfield

Y

ou’ve found the venue, got the perfect dress and even booked the honeymoon, now it’s time to focus on your pre-wedding skincare plan to ensure your complexion is looking its absolute best for your big day. But where do you start? The choice of treatments and skincare can be overwhelming, with a number of products all claiming similar benefits. Just as you wouldn’t expect to achieve a perfectly toned physique after a couple of visits to the gym, so your skin also requires a sustained and regular commitment to ensure it looks its very best. Here are my top tips to help guide you towards glowing, radiant skin:

1

2 3

TIME Your skin renews in a 6-week cycle. The more time you have, the greater the combined benefit of medical grade skin treatments, lifestyle and the correct skincare formulations will be. TAILOR-MAKE YOUR SKINCARE: Your skincare should be as unique as you are, with ingredients tailored to your specific needs. Hydroxy acids containing salicylic acid suit oily or acne-prone skin to gently exfoliate and prevent blocked pores. For dry skin, hyaluronic acid, natures own plumper, draws water to hydrate and give a healthy glow. HYDRATE: Dehydration causes dry skin, fine lines and blemishes to appear. Drink small amounts of water regularly throughout the day. Aim to cut down on sugar, coffee and alcohol and get more sleep.

70 MARCH 2017

5

RESEARCH: Finding a qualified practitioner is vital to ensuring a safe treatment. Knowledge of anatomy and technical delivery is crucial but most important is your actual consultation, facial assessment and mutually agreed treatment plan.

Beautiful, healthy skin isn’t a miracle, it requires time and commitment.

SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN Sun damage is the main cause of premature skin ageing and skin cancer. UV damage replaces your skins natural glow with dryness, discoloration and, eventually, wrinkles. Use a minimum of SPF30 daily, reapplying regularly. SPF in makeup doesn’t give the protection you need.

4

Alcohol dehydrates, and long-term overuse causes inflammation, which presents as facial redness and rosacea.

6

INJECTABLES: The most skilled practitioners can sympathetically restore and rejuvenate your face in a subtle and balanced way. With a comprehensive knowledge of facial anatomy, they can assess and treat your face as a whole, rather than simply “filling lines.” The desired result is a healthy, refreshed glow – like after a good night’s sleep or a holiday – not to dramatically change the way you look.

7

BODY CONTOURING Exercise and diet are always the best starting points. If you need a little extra help, there are a range of body contouring and fat reduction devices available. Ask about independently verified clinical data. FDA-approval is generally considered the world’s most stringent authority for approving medical devices.

8

COSMECEUTICALS Cosmeceuticals tend to have higher concentrations of active ingredients vs high street products. These have been clinically tested to improve conditions such as acne, rosacea and pigmentation. Ideally you should start using these products 3-6 months in advance and avoid introducing any new products in the fortnight before to minimise the chance of any reaction.

SPECIAL OFFER: We would like to invite all Life Magazine readers for a complimentary VISIA skin analysis and £25 off your first HydraFacial treatment until 28th April 2017* Please contact S-Thetics on 01494 670990 or info@sthetics.co.uk and quote “Life Magazine.” *This offer is not valid in conjunction with any other offers or promotions. * Deposit required to secure appointment

JEREMY READ’S

HANDS ON GUIDE M r Jeremy Read is a consultant surgeon at Spire Harpenden Hospital who specialises in hand and wrist problems. Here, he answers common questions he hears about hand and wrist pain, much of which can be caused or aggravated by stresses on the hands and wrists at work. I’ve suffered with pins and needles in my hand for a while and am worried it could be carpal tunnel, what do you think? Classically, carpal tunnel is tingling, pins and needles or numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers; very often the symptoms don’t affect the little finger. It is often worse at night and can wake people up from sleep. There are many underlying causes that lead to pressure on the nerve in your wrist. The symptoms can be related to activity, or to pressure, for example using a telephone or holding a book. How can carpal tunnel be managed? I recommend simple things like activity modification, for example, using a hands-free for phone calls or a wrist support for a keyboard can help. Some people benefit from splints used at night or from physiotherapy and stretching exercises. If these don’t work then an injection may be useful and if symptoms still persist then it can be managed with a fairly simple and quick operation that is done under a local anaesthetic. What do people mean by trigger finger? Trigger finger is where one of the tendons that bends your finger is getting caught at the mouth of a little tunnel in the palm of your hand. Imagine pulling a thread through the eye of a needle when it’s got a knot in it, and it suddenly “pops” through. It can be quite painful and sometimes actually gets stuck and cannot be straightened. It can be related to heavy activity, particularly in gardeners who might do lots of work with secateurs.

74 MARCH 2017

What should I do if I have trigger finger? In the early stages it can sometimes be eased or stopped by reducing gripping activity and topical anti-inflammatories over the palm of the hand can also help. If these do not help, a steroid injection into the tendon sheath can be very beneficial. However, if it persists, a small operation can be done to release the tendon. Many people may not have heard of De Quirvain’s, what is it? I see quite a lot of patients with De Quirvain’s, caused by the way they’re using their hands. De Quirvain’s is similar to trigger finger, where the tendons that straighten the thumb are getting inflamed or trapped as they go through a tunnel on the side of the wrist. This is common in new mothers, especially those breastfeeding, for whom changing how they are lifting their child, or using a feeding pillow is often useful. It can be treated with physiotherapy and stretching or steroid injections, and occasionally requires a surgical release. Are there other things that can cause pain around the thumb? Many of my patients presenting with thumb pain have thumb based arthritis. This can start even in the early 40’s. The symptoms can be managed with splints, hand therapy and injections in many people for a long time before they require any kind of surgery. Even if it is already severe arthritis there are surgical treatments that can get rid of pain while maintaining good function. Mr Read practices at Spire Harpenden Hospital. Jeremy’s Top 3 handy tips 01

Correct posture and wrist positions at a desk are key. Sometimes a different mouse might help.

02

Do short periods of heavy activity and take breaks rather than a long burst, as this allows the soft tissues to recover.

03

Don’t ignore problems; they’re often treated much more simply earlier.

SAVING ENERGY IN YOUR HOME, SAVES MONEY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

W

owadays we are all constantly being encouraged to do our ‘bit’ for the environment and are accustomed to the energy efficiency labels that are on all the white appliances that we buy, as these indicate the extent to which the product we are purchasing is energy efficient, and therefore how environmentally friendly it is. With this in mind most of us, given the option, will probably opt for the more energy efficient rated models secure in the knowledge that we are doing our ‘bit’ for the environment and also probably saving money on our electricity and gas bills. Many years ago now, the UK Government turned their attention to the fabric of our houses and developed a system whereby homeowners could choose energy efficient products for other areas of their home as well. Much work has been done in the last ten years to bring new, higher standards to the thermal efficiency of windows and doors and this has now finally evolved to the point where the windows and doors you choose should carry the highly recognisable and understandable energy efficiency labels called Window Energy Rating. The minimum standard for replacement windows since 1st October 2010 when the Building Regulations were tightened up is a Window Energy Rating (WER) of “C” or a minimum combined U value of 1.6W/m2K. Ever since then UK property

owners and installers are required by law to fit these highly thermally efficient windows when buying new ones (i.e. if replacing existing windows or fitting new ones to an extension etc), as without these energy saving products being installed, FENSA will not issue a FENSA certificate to prove compliance. Sadly the overwhelming majority of replacement windows fitted before 2010 (and many since!) were not “thermally broken” or anything like B rated, and many would not achieve today’s minimum requirement for replacement windows of a “C” rating, as in 2009 and before there was no requirement for home owners or double glazing installers to do so. According to the Energy Saving Trust, nearly a fifth of heat lost from un-insulated homes is through the windows. Investing in one of Hazlemere’s Eco-friendly window systems makes a significant contribution to reducing this which in turn helps to keep homes warmer. Using less energy to keep you warm not only reduces your carbon emissions but saves you money as well. For example, Hazlemere’s UPVC triple glazed windows achieve an A++ rating, having a combined U-Value of 0.99 W/m2K. Even Hazlemere’s standard double glazed UPVC windows have an A+ energy rating and a combined U-Value of 1.3 W/m2K.

nearly a fifth of heat lost from un-insulated homes is through the windows

80 MARCH 2017

However, achieving energy efficiency as a window is only part of the story if homeowners are concerned with the overall environmental impact of what they buy as well as saving money. Hazlemere’s aluminium Eco-friendly windows are obviously made from aluminium which has a very positive environmental story all of its own. Apart from having a long life in use, once it reaches the end of its life it can be infinitely recycled. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy needed to produce the original material plus the finished product has all of the same qualities as the original as well which means it can be recycled time and time again.

Investing in thermally broken aluminium or UPVC double glazing is what millions of UK home owners have already done, many replacing first and second generation non-thermally broken double glazing, which nowadays just doesn’t cut the mustard, given the massive technological advances and the high quality replacement window and door products now available. To find out more about their very latest A+ and A++ energy saving energy efficient windows call one of Hazlemere’s experienced consultants on 01494 854266 for a free no obligation quotation and expert replacement windows and doors advice, or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

PLANNING THE PERFECT POOL Enhancing your home with a swimming pool is a rewarding process but for many, it can also be a daunting task as it is unlike many other building projects.

O

rigin have specialised in the design and construction of high quality, luxury indoor and outdoor swimming pools for over 35 years. Here, they give expert advice on the four key steps that must be taken if you are thinking about embarking on this exciting journey

1

TALK TO THE EXPERTS The first stage of any swimming pool installation should be an onsite consultation with your chosen swimming pool builder to discuss your ideas and budget. This is a chance for you to

88 MARCH 2017

outline expected costs of installation and to establish whether planning permission is needed. At Origin, we offer a free on-site consultation with our experienced advisers. We also provide you with the chance to see examples of other projects; being able to visualise your ideas makes the decision process much easier. After this, a second meeting should be arranged giving you a chance to view the company’s initial proposals and provide feedback. You should come away from this meeting with a clear idea of the project length, costs, size, water treatment and energy options. This meeting is particularly

important as it allows you to make sure all of the leisure facilities and features that will suit your home, family and lifestyle are included in the design. Mrs Singh chose Origin to build her pool house and had a clear vision of how it should look: “I really wanted the build to complement the house exterior and I was keen to bring the outdoors in. We also wanted extra features to be incorporated into the design, like an outside seating area. “It was great working with Origin, I felt like my voice was heard throughout the whole process and we really worked in partnership to create my vision.” The final part of any consultation stage is to show you visuals of the project. This is an exciting meeting as you will see your ideas come to life whilst making decisions about finishing touches and any additional extra features.

2

PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE PERFECT POOL Planning permission can take up to eight weeks to be approved, so it’s important to get it right first time. Having an expert on your side will avoid your application being denied and can significantly speed up the process. Swimming pools that normally require planning permission or Building Regulations consent include: • Indoor swimming pools where the design doesn’t meet Permitted Development criteria • All swimming pools on listed premises • Properties in conservation areas At Origin, we handle the whole swimming pool installation process from design to completion, so our experienced architects are happy to handle this stage of the build for you. Ian Scott, an Origin client, had to seek planning permission for his pool house: “The project was delayed during the planning phase because the local council wanted to carry out an independent assessment on the impact to the trees in the garden. In truth, I wasn’t really affected by this because Origin handled it all. They called a tree specialist and promptly had the garden evaluated. Thankfully, the project wasn’t going to have a major impact and the plans were approved.”

3

DESIGNING YOUR POOL All indoor swimming pools must be built in accordance with British Building Regulations, and special attention needs to be taken with the design of the vapour barrier, dehumidification and materials specification. You don’t need to worry about this stage too much as the architects and technical designers will specify on how this is achieved in your project. Origin is also on hand to discuss energy efficiency

such as solar panels, air source, heat pumps, variable speed pumps and pool covers.

4

ON HAND AT EVERY STAGE During the build, your project manager should conduct regular meetings to update you on progress. This gives you the opportunity to see all of the exciting developments taking place, ask those burning questions and make choices on the finer details, such as tiles and lighting. Hiring separate companies for each element of the build can be stressful, adding complications and unnecessary cost, as it means juggling communication and coordination with different organisations. At Origin, we will take care of every element of the design and build of your pool. This includes liaising with all external parties including local authority, Building Control and utilities companies, to ensure the swimming pool installation runs without a hitch and stays on schedule. THE DETAILS To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996

Once your project is complete, the only thing left to do is relax and enjoy your new swimming pool! MARCH 2017 89
