The countdown has officially begun to Regent Street’s brand new event ‘Discover Food and Wine on Regent Street’ with an array of the area’s most sought after venues offering exclusive menus and offers. The fascinating life and career of celebrated film star, fashion icon and humanitarian, Audrey Hepburn, will be explored in a new photography exhibition opening at the National Portrait Gallery. Over 14 nights this summer, Film4 Summer Screen stages London’s best-loved outdoor cinema experiences under the stars with a typically eclectic programme of movies for all tastes, from cult classics to new releases and red-carpet premieres. This season’s Pret-a-Portea at the Berkeley takes inspiration from an array of distinguished fashion designers with two special editions inspired by Alexander McQueen, paying homage to his celebrated Savage Beauty exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Mirroring the famous footwear that put the fashion flock into frenzy, the Berkeley has recreated Alexander McQueen’s “Armadillo” shoes as a heeled vanilla biscuit with cream icing and edible sparkles. The award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is a firm fixture of summer in the city, providing a cultural hub in the beautiful surroundings of A Royal Park. Its steeply raked auditorium is one of the largest in London with 1,250 seats, yet one of the most intimate. This gives you just a small taste of exciting events & articles featured in this month’s issue...

Frustrated by the uniformity of high-street jewellery, Rosita Heshmati’s discoveries inspired her to set up an online designer jewellery boutique. Rosita’s craving for quality and expressive unique designs for everyday wear and special occasions led to her buying jewellery directly from small designers during frequent trips to southern Europe. “I soon had a jewellery box full of

NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

Audrey Hepburn PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Supported by the Audrey Hepburn Exhibition Supporters Group - 2nd July - 18th October 2015

T

he fascinating life and career of celebrated film star, fashion icon and humanitarian, Audrey Hepburn, will be explored in a new photography exhibition opening at the National Portrait Gallery. Coinciding with the 65th anniversary of Hepburn’s little known career-changing performance at renowned West End night club Ciro’s, in the space now occupied by the Gallery’s public Archive, the exhibition will bring together a remarkable selection of both classic and rarely seen photographs of the successful British actress. Audrey Hepburn: Portraits of an Icon, will follow Hepburn’s rise to fame, from her early years in Holland and as a dancer and chorus girl in London’s West End, to her becoming a stage and screen icon, culminating in her philanthropic work in later life. The exhibition will showcase rarely seen photographs from the collection of the Hepburn family along with iconic portraits of Hepburn by leading photographers of the twentieth century, including Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Angus McBean, Irving Penn and Norman Parkinson. Hepburn performed in revues at London’s leading nightclub Ciro’s, located on Orange Street - now the National Portrait Gallery’s public Archive and study room, in Cecil Landeau’s latenight production Petite Sauce Tartare in 1949 and Summer Nights in 1950. Hepburn’s appearances at Ciro’s in her early twenties were some of the earliest in London and contributed towards the launch of her career, leading to her being talent spotted for a number of early British films including One Wild Oat (1951), Laughter in Paradise (1951) and Secret People (1952). Highlights from the exhibition will include family photographs of Hepburn practising ballet as a young woman, and examples of her early work in London as a fashion model for photographs by Antony Beauchamp, in addition to the highly successful Crookes

Lacto-Calamine skin cream campaign, photographed by Angus McBean in 1950. A rarely seen series of photographs by Mark Shaw, taken during the making of Sabrina in 1953 and published as a photo essay in Life magazine, will offer a unique insight into Hepburn’s life on and off-set, as Shaw was granted unprecedented behind-thescenes access for the photo essay. Photographs by Larry Fried, showing Hepburn in her dressing room on Broadway for Gigi (1951); Hepburn captured in Italy during the filming of War and Peace (1955) by Philippe Halsman and George Daniell; publicity photographs for Funny Face (1957); and Terry O’Neill’s on-set photographs during the making of films How to Steal a Million (1966) and Two for the Road (1967) will be among the portraits on show, documenting A beautifully Hepburn’s transformation throughout the illustrated catalog 1950s, and her key roles on stage and screen. will accompany the ue exhibition, Also included in the exhibition will including over 60 portraits, some of which are rare be vintage magazine spreads, from the and previously unpublished, will Picturegoer in 1952 to the front cover be available to pu rch ase of Life magazine, featuring Hepburn from Na Gallery Shops an tional Portrait in Givenchy for her role in Breakfast d online as hardba ck (RRP £29.95) an at Tiffany’s in 1961, taken by Howell d paperback (exclusive to th e Gallery, Conant. F

or instance, it doesn’t take much research to discover that he had a special fondness for the music of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams or that, as a businessman, he formed a number of different production companies – Essex, Bristol and Sheffield – named after English counties or place names and that he enjoyed lasting friendships with Princess Margaret and Noel Coward. Also, it should be noted that the only studio recordings he made outside of the U.S.A. just happened to take place in London for an album called Great Songs From Great Britain. All of these facts clearly indicate that Frank Sinatra – the most American of popular singers – was an Anglophile at heart. According to showbusiness history, 1950 was a dismal year career-wise for Frank Sinatra. His record sales were sagging and, in an effort to stimulate his career, he threw himself into an exhaustive schedule of concert and nightclub work as well as a radio series. The result was that in April, while playing New York’s Copacabana, his voice gave out and he suffered a throat haemorrhage. 1950 was also the year that MGM dropped his film contract. It was at this low point that he accepted an offer to play the London Palladium. If the American media had declared Sinatra’s career to be on the skids, his appearance at the Palladium gave a very different impression. The rush to buy tickets resulted in thousands of fans jamming Argyle Street all eager to see and hear “The Voice” in person. To Sinatra, this surge of mass adulation came not only as a welcome surprise but also as a massive boost to his confidence. The warmth and affection displayed by British audiences is something he never forgot.

3 0 J U LY 2 0 1 5

Between the 10th and 22nd of July, Frank played 28 shows – two 50-minute shows per night accompanied by pianist Ken Lane and the Skyrockets Orchestra conducted by Woolf Phillips. His repertoire consisted entirely of well-chosen standards opening with “When You’re Smiling” and including such classics as “Bewitched”, “A Foggy Day” and “Embraceable You”. Audience response at all shows was overwhelming. Frank Sinatra found himself the toast of the town. On July 13th, he performed at a private party at the home of Lady Baillie, where he sang “If I Loved You” and “My Foolish Heart” to Princess Margaret as she sat at his feet on a silken cushion. The royal lady told Sinatra that she collected his records and expressed concern over that throat ailment that had bothered him in New York. About 100 other guests lounged on cushions as Sinatra sang a dozen songs happily revealing that his voice was in perfect shape. In 1953, speaking on his impressions of London, Sinatra said “Oh, I just love it here. People used to tell me Paris was the place, but you can keep Paris. They really blackjack you there – reach down and lift the money out of your pockets. But England’s just great. And that date I did with the BBC Show Band – now that’s really a band. When I walked in and saw all those strings, I just drooled. And all that brass! It comes at you like a comet – Vroomph…” In a career spanning six decades, Frank Sinatra gave generously of his time and talent raising over one billion dollars for charities – more than any other entertainer in history. For more than forty of those years, he kept returning to the United Kingdom, always maintaining a special affinity for London audiences who gave him support at a time in his career when he most needed it. HAMPTON COURT PALACE

FLOWER SHOW CELEBRATES ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Spectacular displays of plants and flowers, historic gardens and scarecrows...What’s not to love about the annual Hampton Court Flower Show?

T

he RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show returned to the Tudor palace to celebrate the 25th year of the world’s largest annual flower show – bringing a wealth of fantastic features, great food and beautiful plants. The special addition to this year’s show was the RHS Anniversary Maze, created to celebrate the show’s 25 years. Covering 900sq m and containing nearly 300 metres of Cornus mas hedging, the maze contained lush planting, tunnels with living walls and machines injecting rose scent into areas of the maze. Silver-foliage plants and a forest of silver birches greeted visitors entering the maze. The inspiration for the maze came from the 1990 labyrinth of bedding plants on display to celebrate the Queen Mother’s birthday during the Shows inaugural year. A large floral birthday cake and a silver anniversary turf sculpture were also part of other anniversary displays for visitors to enjoy. Gardens celebrating anniversaries of two of Britain’s best-loved children’s books were among the highlights of the Hampton Court Flower Show. Charlie Bloom’s “The Tea Party” garden marks the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland. Bloom took inspiration from the tea party in Carroll’s classic and imagined that the Mad Hatter was her client: “The planting and flowers are chaotic, very colourful and quite vulgar like the product of an insane mind.” Meanwhile, Anthea Guthrie’s “Winnie the Pooh Begins His Journey” garden imagined the woodland shelter where AA Milne dreamt up his loveable bear 90 years ago. The designs were selected as history gardens by the Royal Horticultural Society to mark its 25th anniversary. The scarecrow competition was one of the most popular parts of the show. This year students at 35 schools in the South East created

3 6 J U LY 2 0 1 5

scarecrows with the theme of history to tie-in with the show’s silver anniversary year. Visitors encountered historical figures including Anne Boleyn and Winston Churchill on a scarecrow trail that guided visitors across the showground, culminating in the scarecrow competition with a giant 7m high scarecrow as its centrepiece. The Duchess of Cornwall visited the show and on inspecting the show’s Scarecrow display, was upstaged by a scarecrow designed to look like Mr Men character, Mr Tickle! The work came from children at Rosemead Preparatory School in Dulwich, and was crafted out of a collection of old Sainsbury’s shopping bags and wore a natty blue hat topped with a spray of greenery. Camilla, who shares Prince Charles’ passion for gardening, visited several of the displays, among them the Floral Marquee, the Music Lover’s Garden and the American Garden. HAMPTON COURT FLOWER SHOW: THE WINNING GARDENS REVEALED A garden that paid tribute to the Kent mining industry was named best in show at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Hadlow College’s ‘Green Seam’ show garden, designed by current students Stuart Charles Towner and Bethany Williams, was inspired by the regeneration of an old mine at Betteshanger near Deal. The garden featured metal structures that evoke the mine itself, along with vivid green and pink planting. The prize for best World Garden went to the Turkish Ministry of Culture & Tourism’s Garden of Paradise, while the Conceptual Garden award went to Pevensey Coastal Defence Limited’s Equilibrium, a shingle garden featuring typical seaside plants. www.rhs.org

THE FELLOWS GUIDE TO AUCTIONS Visiting an auction house can provoke anxiety in a first time bidder.

T

he reality is less intimidating than you think, and modern auction houses like Fellows, based in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, are friendly places to visit. Established in 1876, this family business has a wealth of specialist experience in antique, jewellery, watch, and silver auctions and valuations. AUCTION DOs AND DON’Ts Do your maths. Decide the maximum you want to pay for each piece, and stick to it. Getting caught up in auction frenzy is all too easy and you could find yourself bidding far more than you’d planned. Don’t forget to factor in the buyer’s premium - an additional fee (usually 15-30 per cent of the final hammer price) paid by the winning bidder to the auction house. Do jump in when your item comes on the block. Auctions move fast. If you wait, the hammer may come down before you’ve worked up the courage to make a bid. Don’t miss the preview. You need to check any antiques and try on jewellery or watches you plan to bid for! If you can’t visit the Birmingham saleroom on a viewing day (check www.fellows. co.uk for dates and times) contact the department for detailed condition reports, ask plenty of questions, and view 360° images in the online catalogue. Do register to bid and get a paddle number for the auction. You can’t participate without one. Do make sure you want to buy and don’t get into a bidding war just because you’re feeling competitive. If you make the

4 0 J U LY 2 0 1 5

winning bid, you’re committed to make the purchase. Don’t put in your maximum too soon. The auctioneer will increase the price incrementally until the bids run out. Alternatively, you can place a commission bid before the auction. Do look at the types of bid you can place. Commission bids are maximum bids left before the auction starts, which the Auctioneer places on your behalf and are useful if you can’t make the auction in person. Telephone bids are carried out by an experienced member of staff, who calls you before your lot is due to be sold, and relays the bids to you over the phone. Buying through online bidding platforms is a popular way to buy trinkets, you can see and hear what’s going on in the saleroom via live streaming, and will know immediately if you have won. “WHAT’S IT WORTH?” FREE VALUATIONS IN MAYFAIR Fellows have built up long-term relationships with clients by providing unrivalled customer service to meet the needs of each individual; whether you are searching for a piece of wedding jewellery or a vintage wristwatch. If you are a collector, vendor, or someone who is curious about the world of auctions, you can participate with complete confidence at Fellows. Suite Living in London Millionaires move into luxury London hotels - from £1.3m to £10m

L

iving out of a suitcase is usually the role of the travelling salesman. But far more glamorous customers are putting down real roots in London’s luxury hotels. Wealthy property owners are purchasing suite-style apartments that offer the permanent private resident far more than room service. London already has a handful of these and the latest – the Wanda Vista complex, part of the massive regeneration project transforming the Battersea riverside – has launched a new phase to the world’s elite. Once built, the 42-floor River Tower will offer 103 private apartments ranging from one-bedroom flats to penthouse duplex pads – all sharing the building with the Wanda Vista Hotel.

sold off-plan – has now been launched in the UK, before moving overseas to Beijing, Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Prices are expected to start at about £1.3m. One recent report, from the Mayfair estate agent Wetherell, said it is becoming harder to distinguish between hotels and apartments in these buildings, with the design and experience merging into one. “Branded residences are beginning to penetrate the market,” says Peter Wetherell, the managing director. “These are stunning properties attached to some of London’s highestprofile redevelopments. They offer the ultimate in synergy – ultra-luxury hotels with an additional wing or section of private sale or serviced apartments.”

LIVING OUT OF A SUITE There will be spa facilities, valet parking and cinema rooms – not unusual for serviced apartments. But the residents of these Chinese-inspired apartments can also order “in-home dining”, a cleaner and a “turn-down” service to change sheets, and take care of dry cleaning and freshen up the flowers. The Wanda Vista will have its own banqueting hall, additional top-end restaurants and a sky bar on the 18th floor – all at the disposal of both guests and full-time residents, who will enter the shared building through two different but equally grand entrances. On the 19th floor there will be a private lounge for those who live in the apartments, and an observation deck on the 42nd floor with views towards the City and beyond. As well as a crèche and other childcare facilities, and a golf simulator room for guests and residents, Wanda is rolling out another of its core products – a luxury karaoke bar, open to hotel guests, residents and available for private hire. WHO’S BUYING? Even the cost of buying an apartment associated with a luxury brand, without the services - puts the price beyond the reach of all but the wealthiest buyers. Penny Mosgrove, the chief executive of Quintessentially Estates, states that the typical buyers of such five-star homes are usually from overseas. “Hotel luxury living appeals to overseas markets much more than domestic – they are used to this type of living and want to replicate it. They tend to sell to people who use it as a pied-à-terre so they know the flat is secure while they are away.” Linked to the Mandarin Oriental, One Hyde Park, the Knightsbridge complex overlooking Hyde Park has been the standout hotel and apartments tie-up at the very top of the market. Flats there sell for £6,000 per square foot. Other examples of the “living out of a suite” phenomenon in London are the W London at Leicester Square, the Bulgari apartments in Knightsbridge, and the Corinthia hotel and homes in Whitehall. There are 41 private residences at Ten Trinity Square, in the City, which has a link with the Four Seasons hotel, and the Shard at London Bridge contains homes and the Shangri-La hotel.

The Summer Slide WRITTEN BY MARK MACLAINE, PROFESSIONAL TUTOR FOR 17 YEARS AND FOUNDER OF TUTORFAIR.COM

A

s the summer term comes to a close, the nation’s children enter the longest holidays of the year. Although rest is vitally important for students, of all ages, there is a growing body of research pointing to this lengthy break actually being detrimental to longterm academic progress. It is well known that students achieve lower grades at the start of the autumn term than they do in the same tests given in the last weeks before summer. Educational psychologist Harris Cooper coined the phrase ‘the summer slide’ when he found that students can lose a month or more of progress over this holiday. One of the best ways to help reduce this slide is to organise activities that encourage thinking and problem solving. These don’t have to cost anything either. Trips to most museums and galleries are free, and if these outings are well planned they can become both educational and engaging. Students can take notes and make sketches of the things they see. They should be encouraged to think creatively about how they could present this to parents as perhaps a project, taking care to keep it fun. The possibilities for summer learning are endless and should not be constrained to the curriculum. For instance, teenagers can positively benefit from skills they may not have time to do in term, for example Excel or learning the basics of writing a business plan for their dream venture. Tutoring sessions spread out sparingly 5 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5

over the summer can be hugely beneficial too. Recapping important topics from the previous year, and even starting to look a little ahead to what’s coming can be helpful. Starting in September with a running start can be a huge to boost confidence, especially for students who may have struggled the year before. Staying on top is easier than pulling themselves up, especially given the amount of work students have during term time. It’s essential that children get a break during the summer holiday and a real chance to unwind. But, for kids of all ages and abilities, a little planning and regular effort can make a big difference to instilling a love of learning now that will last throughout the next school year. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT TUTORFAIR Tutorfair.com makes it easy for parents to find the best tutors, for every student who pays, they give tutoring to a child who can’t afford it. Savage Beauty Alexander McQueen

in partnership with Swarovski

his spring the V&A will present the only major retrospective in Europe of the work of the visionary fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen. One of the most innovative designers of his generation, McQueen was celebrated for his extraordinary creative talent. He combined a profound grasp of tailoring and eclectic range of influences with a relentless pursuit to challenge the boundaries of art and fashion, blending the latest technology with traditional craftsmanship. Originated by the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Savage Beauty will be edited and expanded for the V&A’s large exhibition galleries. It will feature 30 additional garments, including some rare early pieces, lent by private individuals and collectors such as Katy England and Annabelle Neilson as well as pieces from the Isabella Blow Collection and the House of Givenchy. A new section will be added to the exhibition, focusing on McQueen’s fledgling development as a designer in London. Gainsbury and Whiting, the production company that collaborated with Alexander McQueen in staging his catwalk shows are working with the V&A on the exhibition. Each section will capture the essence of the provocative, dramatic and extravagant catwalk presentations that McQueen became renowned for, combining storytelling, theatrical performance, music and film. Another key moment of the exhibition is the Cabinet of Curiosities, which will showcase designs produced by McQueen in collaboration with fellow creatives such as the jeweller Shaun Leane and milliner Philip Treacy. Presented in a double-height gallery, interspersed with film footage of nearly all of McQueen’s catwalk shows, it will display around 40 additional objects that have not previously been seen together.

In total, the exhibition will showcase more than 200 ensembles and accessories, the largest number of individual pieces designed by McQueen and collaborators ever seen together. They range from McQueen’s Central Saint Martins’ postgraduate collection of 1992 to his final designs for A/W 2010, completed after his death, and are drawn primarily from the Alexander McQueen archive in London. Sarah Burton, Creative Director Alexander McQueen, said: “Savage Beauty is a celebration of the most imaginative and talented designer of our time. Lee was a genius and a true visionary who pushed boundaries, challenged and inspired. He believed in creativity and innovation and his talent was limitless.” ABOUT SWAROVSKI The crystal house and Alexander McQueen share a rich history, beginning in the 1990s when Isabella Blow introduced the young maverick designer to Nadja Swarovski. Swarovski went on to support McQueen’s S/S 1999 collection, which was to be the first of numerous collaborations. Founded in 1895 in Austria, Swarovski Crystal Business designs, manufactures and sells crystals, natural and created gemstones, and finished products such as jewellery, accessories and lighting.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF EXTREME FOOTWEAR WILL BE EXPLORED IN THE V&A’S SUMMER 2015 FASHION EXHIBITION, SHOES: PLEASURE AND PAIN

M

ore than 200 pairs of historic and contemporary shoes from around the world will be on display, many for the first time. The exhibition will explore the agonizing aspect of wearing shoes as well as the euphoria and obsession they can inspire. The V&A’s shoe collection is unrivalled, spanning the globe and over 2000 years. Curator Helen Persson has delved into this, other international collections and the wardrobes of private individuals to select an exceptional range of shoes – from a sandal decorated in pure gold leaf originating from ancient Egypt - to futuristic looking shoes created using 3D printing. Shoes worn by or associated with high profile figures including Marilyn Monroe, Queen Victoria, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kylie Minogue will be shown as well as famous shoes, such as the ballet slippers designed for Moira Shearer in the 1948 film The Red Shoes. Footwear by 70 named designers including Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo and Prada will be on display. The exhibition will be shown over two floors. The luxurious, boudoir design of the ground floor gallery will examine three themes: transformation, status and seduction. ‘Transformation’ will present shoes that are the things of myth and legend, with different cultural interpretations of the Cinderella story. It will explore the concept of shoes being empowering as passed down through folklore, illustrated by the Seven League Boots from the ‘Hop o’ My Thumb’ tale, and how this feeds into contemporary marketing for such things as football boots and the concept of modern-day, fairy-tale shoemakers, whose designs will magically transform the life of the wearer. ‘Status’ will reveal how impractical shoes have been worn to represent privileged and leisurely lifestyles – their design, shape and material can often make them unsuitable for walking – and how shoes also dictate the way in which the wearer moves, and how they are seen. Shoes on display will include the now infamous Vivienne Westwood blue

6 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5

platforms worn by Naomi Campbell in 1993. ‘Status’ will also demonstrate how historically shoe fashions originated from the European royal courts, while today the focus has shifted to famous shoe designers. Desirable shoes such as the ‘Pompadour’, worn by trend-setting women in the 18th-century French court will sit together with designs by the some of the most well-known names in fashion today, including Alexander McQueen and Sophia Webster. Within ‘Seduction’, the shoes represent an expression of sexual empowerment or a passive source of pleasure. Like feet, shoes can be objects of fetishism. High Japanese geta, extreme heels and tight-laced leather boots will be on display as well as examples of erotic styles channeled by mainstream fashion in recent years. In contrast, the first floor gallery is dedicated to dissecting the processes involved in designing and creating footwear, from concept to final shoe, peeling back the layers and revealing how they are made. The displays will show how makers combine traditional craftsmanship with technological innovation and how they unite function with art. Designer sketches, materials, embellishments and shoe lasts, such as the lasts created by H. & M. Rayne for Princess Diana, will be on show, alongside ‘pullovers’ from Roger Vivier for Christian Dior. The section will highlight the makers’ ingenuity in creating innovative styles and dealing with the structural challenges of creating ever higher heels and more dramatic shapes and will feature filmed interviews with five designers and makers.

Prezola is run by a passionate husband and wife team supported by a team of over 30 staff who pride themselves on providing you with a truly personal service for your special day. Choosing what gifts to ask from your guests can be a daunting task, with endless product, honeymoon and cash contribution options available where do you start? Here, Ali Beaven – cofounder & creative director of Prezola.com shares her top tips – ensuring a seamless gift list experience!

1. HAVE A GIFT LIST It may sound obvious, but almost half of couples choose not to create a wedding gift list. And for your guests that presents a real problem. Family and friends will almost certainly want to buy a gift to commemorate your big day and the wedding gift list has been an established British tradition for centuries. Don’t be shy! It would be rude not to! 2. CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS There are now lots of gift list options to consider, so you don’t necessarily have to opt for the obvious. You could have a traditional single store gift list, a honeymoon fund or even ask for donations to your favourite charity. Or opt for a single gift list service which can combine all of these elements. Already living together is no longer an excuse! 6 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5

3. BE READY ON TIME Traditionally your wedding gift list should be ready as soon as your invitations are dispatched. So, plan ahead, do your research, try to stick to just one list and make sure your guests have all of the information they need as soon as they accept your invitation! Put it on your wedmin list! 4. CREATE YOUR OWN HEIRLOOMS After the confetti has settled and the honeymoon tan is fading your wedding gifts can stay with you for the rest of your life. They will become your new family’s heirlooms, which is really special. Choose wisely and in twenty years time your children might be using them! 5. CAPTURE THE MOMENT Your wedding photos will always be very special to you, even as fashions change! Be sure to add bespoke photo albums and beautiful frames to your gift list so they can be protected and displayed forever! 6. GIVE GUESTS PLENTY OF CHOICE People prefer to buy things that they like themselves. Some guests may have very traditional views while others will be happy to give cash contributions towards your honeymoon if that’s what you really want. Try to cater for everyone who might be buying you a gift. 7. CATER FOR ALL BUDGETS No one knows your guest list better than you, and you’ll have a good idea of how much most people would like to spend. The national average is now over £60 on a wedding gift, which lots of couples underestimate. Try to add items at the top and bottom end of the budget and consider adding gift vouchers as a very flexible option; guests could buy £10 or £1000 worth! 8. MAKE IT PERSONAL Your list should reflect you and your style. It should bring a smile to guests’ faces as they think “that is just perfect for them”. Don’t feel restricted by tradition and add items that you’ll treasure forever. Make sure you can add a personal message to thank guests for looking at the list, and that they can add a gift message when they buy something! 9. THINK ABOUT DELIVERY OPTIONS THAT WORK FOR YOU Do you want wedding gifts at the venue on the big day? While it’s traditional to do so, you’ll need someone to take charge of getting them home securely. If you’d rather not have gifts at the wedding, look into services that can offer delivery to you at home all in one go after the wedding itself. 10. THANK YOU LETTERS Finally, be sure to thank everyone who was kind enough to buy a gift. Sometimes this can be easier said than done unless you’re very organised when it comes to the unwrapping! Use a gift list service that keeps track of who bought which gift for you!

This is the million-dollar question as it depends on your lifestyle and weight. We do however recommend a course of 3 sessions for optimum results. THE DETAILS For Appointments Telephone 020 7323 6559 www.drhausdermatology.com Our new address is: 140 Harley Street, London W1G 7LB

Personal Trainers

A Status Symbol Or The Quickest Way To Fitness?

T

he decision to hire a personal trainer is an empowering one. Whether you’re new to exercise or you’ve been working out on your own, using a personal trainer can give you that extra nudge. But you’ve got to show up for the experience, body and soul, and be really clear about creating a two-way exchange that works for you. MAKING IT WORK Meeting potential trainers is an important first step. Ask around for recommendations first from friends and work colleagues. Ask about their credentials, how long they’ve been training and whom they’re certified through. Focus on someone with national certifications or a trainer with a degree in exercise science. To help determine if a prospective trainer is right for you, you need to ensure that they can help you achieve your goals – losing weight, building strength, pre-race training etc Also a good trainer would have no trouble providing references , so speak to their other clients to get a better picture. Beyond that, personal dynamics are key. In other words, it helps if you genuinely like the trainer.

cardio fitness and body weight. If you haven’t worked out recently, your trainer may recommend an initial period of training designed to help you build a fitness base and avoid injury, making all your subsequent workouts more effective. DEVELOP A STRONG WORKING RELATIONSHIP Establishing an optimal training relationship is crucial if you are going to be spending regular time together - so you need to make sure you find someone with the right skills and chemistry. As with any good relationship, you should feel like the trainer brings out the best in you. A good trainer will be open to answering any questions or concerns you bring to each session. The more you get to know your trainer, the more you’ll automatically hear his or her voice directing you through the moves. You should feel challenged, but not pushed beyond your limits. Afterwards, ask yourself: Are you happy with how it went? Do you feel empowered and motivated? For some clients, a limited package of training sessions is all they want. Other clients are in it for the long haul: They have the means to pay for a trainer indefinitely, and they like the ongoing accountability and motivation the trainer provides. As long as the cost-benefit analysis is working in your favour, the decision to keep training is easy.

Finding the right Personal Trainer can transform your health and fitness efforts.

FOCUS ON CLEAR GOALS Prior to your first session, discuss your objectives so that he or she can come up with an appropriate plan to achieve them. This may involve some assessment drills - you want to have an initial measure of things like posture, balance, flexibility and strength. Depending on your goals, you might also measure body-fat percentage, 7 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5

‘We all have the power to change lives’ Volunteering for The Haven’s charity event committees can be a great way to make friends, make contacts and have fun – while making a real difference to the lives of those diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s what Lou McEwen found when she joined the team last year...

T

here’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when a charity is able to expand its services because of a fundraiser you helped make happen. It’s a feeling I experienced for the first time last year when I volunteered for the committee organising The Haven’s big Blush fundraiser. And, it’s a feeling I now couldn’t imagine living without. The Haven needs volunteers so it can be an open door for breast cancer patients – offering emotional, practical and physical support and complementary therapy – when the consultation room door closes. Haven by name, haven by nature, this charity picks you up when you feel like falling and gives you the right information (not the Google version) and the confidence to make the right decisions for your body. Three years ago, it was me walking through that door. When you’re being treated for breast cancer, you spend a lot of time trying to be brave for those around you. At The Haven, I didn’t have to be brave. I could just be me. Volunteering for an event committee means I can help keep that door open for the 500,000 people in the UK now living with breast cancer. I started out thinking it would be a good use of the marketing and event experience I have gained through my work – which it is. What I could have never predicted, however, is just how much fun I would have along the way. I have met friends for life, not just committee members (many of whom have not been affected by breast cancer themselves). I look forward to their emails and the one evening a month we spend together planning out the Blush event and dividing up tasks – everything from phoning businesses and sourcing auction prizes to selling tickets. I feel proud of the work we do (and I’ve even picked up new skills to use in my working life). And, I continue to be inspired by – and thankful for – the charity that brought us together.

7 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5

As a busy professional, I thought I’d never have time to volunteer. Now, I realise that if you want to make a difference, there’s always time. To those of you tempted to join a committee, I would say go for it. You could even start by attending an event to see just how much of an impact you can make. Life is too short to wonder ‘what if?’. Breast cancer can strip you bare, so it’s wonderful to volunteer for a charity that can put you back together again. I will never forget what The Haven did for me. Now, I want to make sure we raise even more money to support people facing cancer today and in the future. By volunteering, you, too, will help make that possible. Inspired by Lou’s story? If you’d like to join one of our fantastic committees, or start your own with your friends, please contact Emma Payne in The Haven events team on emma.payne@thehaven.org.uk today.

Lunchtime Meditation Classes at The Connaught with The Aman Spa therapists

A

s Londoner’s continue to strive for the perfect work and life balance, the Aman Spa at the Connaught, part of London’s prestigious Maybourne Hotel Group are offering complimentary daily 20 minute mindfulness meditation classes over lunchtime to raise awareness on the benefits it has for coping with stress and anxiety in the workplace. Mindfulness meditation is an adaption of Buddhist meditation which encourages one to focus on the moment rather than being consumed by the pain of the past or anxiety over the future. Aman therapists have been practicing daily meditation since the launch of the Spa in 2009 to find a personal balance as it helps them sense and craft the most unique and tailored treatments for their guests. This will be the first time their therapists open their doors and welcome guests to participate in their daily habitual. Guests will be welcomed in the lobby by an Aman representative and ushered to the spa into a cool and dim-light treatment room where they will be asked to remove their shoes and turn off any technological equipment. Aman Spa Manager Rene Van Eyssen explains “Meditation encourages you to observe your emotions, which improves awareness of the present moment, bringing clarity and peace. The result is a total renewal of mind and spirit.”

The 500-square metre spa features five treatment rooms, a 60-square metre pool, a fitness studio and an extensive spa menu, which reflects the renewing traditions of China, Thailand, India and the Americas. Salt Cellers

If your surname is Sayer then you come from old stock indeed.

I

n Feudal England when the warring Barons were forever trying to bump one another off , poisoning was a great favourite. It could be administered in secret and it was difficult to prove those responsible. So much of a concern was it that one gentleman in every great household was appointed the prestigious responsibility of overseeing the ceremony of the “Sayes”. It was his job to taste the food and drink before it was consumed by the Master. If he didn’t drop dead he pronounced for all to hear “Say Yes” for he was the Sayer. Luckily for any of you today, most seemed to have survived. In those days the Master sat at the centre of a long table facing the hall with a large, ceremonial and the only salt cellar in front of him. His guest of honour sat to his right. When there was no such guest the Sayer took his place and became his right-hand-man, and, as he could reach the salt, he was said to be “worth his salt”. The custom of having individual salt cellars placed around the table

8 0 J U LY 2 0 1 5

only really became popular during the early 18th century, as did boxes of cutlery; until then you carried your own utensils with you wherever. The thought of using someone else’s never entered the 17th cetury mind, but that’s another story. Salt, for the wealthy, could be placed on the wide rim or trencher of the large plates on which great portions of food were served. Such a plateful was called a ‘mess’. The master and principal guests had one each to themselves whilst the lesser brethren further down the line of the table had to share one mess between two, then three, and then four. Such intimacy fostered comradeship and these chaps became known as ‘mess mates’ which is also the origin of the ‘ Officers’ Mess’. More about the canteens of cutlery next time. ABBOTT’S FLOORING

Stylish Designs and Dedication

“I

have been using Abbotts for nearly 40 years, The first thing that hits me every time I visit, is that they are always updating their showroom to not only reflect their amazing range of flooring, carpeting, shutters and blinds, but also to illustrate the latest designs and trends on the market. The staff are incredibly experienced, knowledgeable and friendly, and most importantly - available to advise and guide me as to the most suitable range for my property. With Abbott’s being a traditional family business, you get that personal service and the same fitting team each time. This makes it all the more a pleasant experience. The addition of a blind, shutter and curtain department is a master stroke. It is run by another of the Abbott team so the family connection continues. Abbott’s is definitely worth a visit; allow at least 2 hours if not 3 as you enter a world of stylish flooring and carpet displays and the most impressive blind and shutter department I have seen. This is upstairs where you get the Amtico, Karndean engineered wood, laminate display areas, and the high quality and desirable materials for your curtains; it will take your breath away.

8 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5

Recently, we decided to go retro and lo and behold Abbotts came to the rescue! There were some stunning William Morris designs to choose from, but wanting to go for a quirky retro feel; Tom in the showroom was able to present their range of superb fifties and sixties designs. They really can cater for all your tastes whether traditional or modern. We chose a modern take on an old theme by using an Alternative Flooring Quirky design that looked amazing, it could not have worked out better. “For high-quality and a dedicated and experienced team that go that extra mile for you to achieve your dream interior, definitely head to Abbott’s.” MRS A MASON-PHILLIPS. Munncrete:

Bringing Beauty to Concrete...

I

ndustrial chic. Where did it come from? It was during the industrial revolution when many factories went out of business. Many empty buildings were turned into stunning open plan living areas which celebrated exposed materials such as brickwork, metals and concrete which all enjoyed the limelight after years of being hidden away. Thanks to the ever growing demand for ‘industrial chic’ interior style, many are falling for the allure of concrete, particularly the high end decorating market as well as various commercial and residential projects. Rishi Subeathar, founder of eicó paints and Managing Director of specialist decorating shop Ray Munn in Fulham, poured his 35 years of industry knowledge into developing Munncrete, a new multi-functional cement porcelain coating. At the forefront of his mind was the need for Munncrete to be totally workable, easily applied, durable, practical, hardwearing and seamlessly beautiful. Once these attributes were in place, Rishi added a plethora of benefits into the concrete mix. Unlike many other concrete coatings, you are not limited to the colour grey. Munncrete can be tinted to suit most colour schemes, a huge added benefit to the creative consumer who can opt for brilliant white, bright red, yellows either from the Munncrete colour card or, enjoy the option of a having a bespoke colour created with the help of the Munncrete team. Why use Munncrete? Munncrete’s workability is sublime and it can be easily and quickly applied to any surface. Far from the thick doorstep thickness we may imagine, Munncrete,’s total thickness is a mere 2-3mm. It also leaves no on-site debris after application, another huge plus, especially for projects within in built up areas where minimal inconvenience is required. Who is using Munncrete? As well as the high end decorating market, Munncrete has been chosen for many exciting residential projects in and around London; wet rooms, saunas and swimming pools which enjoy Munncretes 100 percent waterproof finish. Industrial factories, outlets and offices also enjoy the durability and practicality of Munncrete which suit areas of high trafficked flooring such as factories, retail outlets and hospitals. All also benefit from Munncrete slip-resistant finish. As consumers, architects and interior designers recognise the many benefits to incorporating concrete into their designs, Munncrete encourages creativity in design, colour and where it can be applied. For example, Munncrete was recently used to create concrete tables at a popular food outlet to stunning effect. The possibilities are endless and with the demand for ‘industrial chic’ showing no signs of abating, the future of concrete is far from grey. A

TIMELESS ELEGANCE OF SASH WINDOWS

sash window or hung sash window is made of one or more movable panels or “sashes” that form a frame to hold panes of glass, which are often separated from other panes (or “lights”) by narrow muntins. Although any window with this style of glazing is technically “a sash”, the term is used almost exclusively to refer to windows where the glazed panels are opened by sliding vertically, or horizontally in a style known as a “Yorkshire light”, sliding sash, or sash and case (so called because the weights are concealed in a box case). The oldest surviving examples of sash windows were installed in England in the 1670s, for example at Ham House. The invention of the sash window is sometimes credited, without conclusive evidence, to Robert Hooke. The sash window is often found in Georgian and Victorian houses, and the classic arrangement has three panes across by two up on each of two sashes, giving a “six over six” panel window, although this is by no means a fixed rule. Innumerable late Victorian and Edwardian suburban houses were built in England using standard sash window units approximately 4 feet (1.2 m) in width, but older, hand-made units could be of any size. To facilitate operation, the weight of the glazed panel is usually balanced by a heavy steel, lead, or cast iron sash weight or counter-weight concealed within the window frame. The sash weight is connected to the window by a sash cord or chain that runs over a pulley at the top of the frame, although spring balances are sometimes used. Sash windows may be fitted with simplex hinges, which allow the window to be locked into hinges on one side while the counterbalance on the other side is detached, allowing the 9 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5

window to be opened for escape or cleaning. The name “hung sash window” is more usual in the United States, and typically refers to a double-hung window with two sashes that can move up and down in the window frame. A single hung window has two sashes but normally the top sash is fixed and only the bottom sash slides. Triple and quadruple hung windows are used for tall openings, common in New England churches. Construction is usually of softwood, and these sashes were traditionally only single-glazed. Modern double-glazed sash windows are now available, which increase energy efficiency and reduce sound ingress whilst keeping the traditional look of a period property. Traditionally styled double-glazed sash windows will often attempt to mimic the original appearance through the use of non-functional muntins or ‘glazing bars’, which are applied to the surface of the glazing, and give the appearance that the sash is made up of several smaller panes, whereas in reality, each sash consists of only one, large, double glazed unit. Sash windows are relatively low maintenance and offer huge advantages in return (style, aesthetics, abides by laws (relating to older houses and buildings), natural resources etc.), however well-maintained sash windows should last generations without needing parts replaced. It is also possible to clean all the glass from within the building by sliding the two panes to different positions. A significant advantage of sash windows is that they provide efficient cooling of interiors during warm weather. Opening both the top and bottom of a sash window by equal amounts allows warm air at the top of the room to escape, thus drawing relatively cool air from outside into the room through the bottom opening.

Blinds, Shutters and Shades

Windows are a great focal point in a room and blinds, shutters and shades should be both decorative and functional. But with so many styles to choose from, finding the right one for your needs isn’t always an open-and-shut deal.

HERE’S WHAT TO CONSIDER… Decide whether you want your room bright and airy or more “buttoned up” and cosy. Do you want to block out light in the bedroom or hang a sheer fabric in your kitchen that lets the sun shine in? Are the windows you’re covering near the front door or facing the sunny side of the house? All of these factors will influence the styles and fabrics you choose. BLINDS Blinds are best if you want tiltable slats that can be adjusted to let the sun shine in (or not). They offer a handsome, clean-looking custom fit and plenty of privacy. Prices for blinds generally climb in this order: vinyl, aluminum, faux wood (or textured vinyl) and wood. Insulating blinds help conserve energy and filter or block light, so they work hard for your money. Wider horizontal slats create the illusion of bigger windows and more space in apartments and small rooms. Vertical blinds work for windows that are wider than they are tall. They’re an ideal pick for picture windows with a sweeping view or across sliding glass doors. Blinds generally require more of a commitment to keep clean, because the slats attract dust and grime. SHADES Shades are the answer if you’re looking for versatility and style. They provide more ways to create different looks and moods using texture, pattern, and fabric weight. oven wood (such as bamboo) offers full, natural-looking W coverage, working well in conservatories where you may need to filter out the sun to read the newspaper or see your iPad screen. Roman shades have soft, wide pleats that fold flat when raised

1 0 0 J U LY 2 0 1 5

by a cord. These are lovely for the dining or living room. Balloon, where the fabric is gathered into billowy poufs make a high-style statement and are a dressy touch. Blackout, with a room-darkening fabric, block out up to 100% of light and ideal for bedrooms and home cinemas. Solar are made from a sheer weave that offers protection from harmful UV rays but don’t completely block your view. They are great for kids’ rooms, dining areas, and light-drenched offices. To keep them fresh and clean, you’ll need to hand-wash vinyl shades. Fabric shades should be vacuumed regularly and either spot-cleaned or sent out for professional cleaning. SHUTTERS Shutters provide a chic and stylish alternative to blinds, and are a cost-effective way to completely update the look and feel of a room. They are more hygienic too as they simply wipe clean and don’t absorb the dust. There are three types of shutters: plantation, solid and café style. Most people go for the plantation style, which have slats (also known as louvers) that rotate open and closed to control light levels. Solid shutters are ideal for those wanting to create a more traditional look, and are designed to be folded back during the day and closed at night. Café style shutters are popular in restaurants and cafes, hence the name - with this style, the shutters normally cover just the bottom half of the window. With tier-on-tier shutters, there are two sets of shutters, one above the other. You can open each set individually, which gives you more flexibility and more light control. These are ideal if you have larger bay windows.

WALK INTO

PURE LUXURY

O

ne walk-in wardrobe may seem like a luxury in space-efficient city homes, but London’s high-flying couples are now demanding one each... For the woman with too little space to store all her shoes, or the man in happy possession of 50 Armani suits, the advent of the walk-in wardrobe-come-dressing room is the answer to a truly first world problem. The very best come in all shapes and sizes and can be made to suit your lifestyle. No top-end developer would market a property without a dedicated space for clothes. It’s a trend born in America, fuelled by Carrie Bradshaw’s overflowing trophy room in Sex and the City, which has now firmly crossed the Atlantic. When heiress Tamara Ecclestone was renovating a £47 million house in Palace Green, Kensington, she included a dressing room featuring a mechanical handbag carousel, a dedicated evening wear aisle to store party outfits, and a cabinet lined with Hermes leather for her sunglasses and jewellery. Back in the real world, Tina Mahony, director of Go Modern (www.gomodern.co.uk), recommends budgeting between £600 and £800 a metre for an Italian-made wardrobe with doors that are either wooden, lacquered, or, best of all, folding glass. This price does not include fitting. “They are amazing because you can see the whole contents of your wardrobe at once, and they are much lighter than a normal wardrobe,” she says.

1 0 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5

Interior designer Laura Hammett (www.laurahammett.com) says that walk-in wardrobes have become a vital element of large London houses; whether they work in smaller properties, however, is a matter of personal taste, since you may need to forsake a bedroom to create an all-singing, all-dancing number. “If you are doing up a property with resale in mind then I think it is fine to go from five to four bedrooms, but if you are at four bedrooms or less then it might not be the best way to go,” says Hammett. “If you’re creating the best home for you then it is a matter of what works best for you.” The great benefit of going bespoke is that your wardrobe can precisely fit your lifestyle. You need to assess what you need to store and make sure you get the right balance of hanging space, drawer space and cupboards. Decide between hinged and sliding doors, mirrors can be inbuilt, and tilted shelves for shoes and boots are very practical. At the very top end Joe Burns, managing director of interior designer/ developer Oliver Burns (www.oliverburns. com), says that his clients are now demanding not one but two dressing rooms — his and hers. Despite this excess, Burns feels that a more pareddown approach can work well, too. “My own home is more regular, but I have one in a spare room,” he says. “It means my wardrobe is organised and it takes less time to get ready in the morning. It is definitely time-efficient and the other good point about walk-ins is that they do not take forever to fit — Mahony tells clients to allow between half a day for a small wardrobe to two days for a full-scale dressing room.

Revolutionary Led Lighting System

hether you work from home or in an office building, good lighting is essential. Not only does it help you complete tasks but modern lighting will also improve the way you feel. DURABLE has transformed the task lighting arena with the launch of LUCTRA®, a revolutionary LED lighting system proven to enhance wellbeing and productivity within the office environment by harnessing the biological effect of light. It is well known that daylight is a good source of vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones but daylight can provide other health benefits. The natural colour of daylight stimulates the production of melatonin and serotonin that controls the circadian rhythm in the human brain. Lack of exposure to daylight can result in fatigue and at worst depression. The effective targeted changes of light colour provided by the LUCTRA® family of lamps are able to remedy this deficit by stabilising the human biorhythm, ensuring individuals are able to sleep well and feel more rested when carrying out their daily tasks. “The importance of the correct lighting for the working environment cannot be underestimated,” comments Sean Starkey, Managing Director at DURABLE UK. “You can bring the benefits of natural light to your office at work or home and make the space as personal as you are. LUCTRA® provides an incredibly wide colour spectrum, and intense brightness, offering outstanding customisation and total flexibility. Its ability to be easily adjusted means it is the ideal task lighting choice for anybody, at any time of day and a truly unique lighting solution.” Using the highest grade of materials and designed in conjunction with the latest scientific research, the elegant LUCTRA® range consists of four floor and table lamp models in two modern, minimalistic designs and three stylish colour finishes.

1 0 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5

The range, endorsed by Dr Dieter Kunz, an expert in the importance of light for health in light design features superior quality cold white and warm white LEDs that produce an illuminance of up to 1,000 lux. LUCTRA® also features an extremely high colour spectrum between 2,700 and 6,500 Kelvin, which provides an intensity and colour that closely replicates daylight. The stunning collection of lamps is extremely easy to use with simple touch panel control. The VITACORE® electronic system offers users intuitive access to LUCTRA® functions and the ability to control the brightness and colour of the light by simply placing a finger on the glass touch panel. A VITACORE® APP is also available on Apple and Android systems. A personalised 24-hour lighting sequence can be programmed to automatically vary the colour and intensity of light to simulate natural light through the course of the day. Bluetooth technology allows the lamps to be controlled from a 10 metre distance and two integrated USB connections enable charging of mobile devices without affecting the life of the LEDs. Hidden behind LUCTRA®’s stylish design is sophisticated technology that ensures the lamp works as well as it looks. The lamp heads have their own stylish cooling fans which dissipate heat effectively, ensuring an extremely long service life of up to 50,000 hours of the LED bulbs. The lamp’s long service life is also enhanced by the self-locking joints specially developed for LUCTRA® which operate without the normal locking screws or complex mechanisms. To balcony or not to balcony?

That is the question. W

hen designing your new home, there are plenty of things you immediately consider such as the desired size, layout and overall look of the property, but have you given any thought to the growing trend in the UK self-build market of adding a balcony? A recent article in one of the UK’s leading self-build magazines discussed the rise that architects have been seeing over the past 10-15 years regarding the number of UK properties that now sport balconies. It is believed this growing trend is due to people acknowledging the British climate is far better than that of our Scandinavian neighbours, where a high proportion of new homes automatically include balconies, which in turn has created an interest in the UK in having balconies built into new designs. With so many different types of balconies available, you could choose something as elegant and simple as a Juliette Balcony, or something far grander and more opulent such as a large balcony which can act as a seating or decking area. Whichever option you choose, you can be sure it will create a stunning feature piece for your bespoke home. BALCONY STRUCTURE When choosing your balcony, whatever you decide, you need to give it a lot of thought, as it needs to be an integral part of your home rather than just something that is ‘stuck on’ as an afterthought. There are a number of materials and tread patterns available on the market which will all obviously affect the look. However, careful consideration needs to be given to how your balcony will be supported. There are numerous approaches available ranging from high-tech cantilevered ones, meaning that the structure of the balcony is tied into the main floor structures of the house, or the more simple option of being a bolt on structure, supported by gallows brackets or traditional support columns. The latter is the easier and most cost effective option, but for some buildings and applications the former is the only suitable solution.

1 1 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5

PLANNING PERMISSION A question a lot of people ask is whether or not you need planning permission for a balcony; the simple answer is that you always need planning permission in the UK for a balcony that projects from a building (excluding Juliette balconies). As well as the obvious considerations of appearance and structure, you need to consider how your balcony will act as a means of importing light and to make sure that it does not cut off light from below. MATERIALS As a rule of thumb, traditional timber decked balconies are a cheaper option than steel, cast aluminium or glass structures but it does not offer some of the key benefits previously mentioned, such as letting the light through to lower space, and they often require more complicated structures such as cantilevered ones, which cost more than those supported underneath by columns. Cast aluminium balconies are extremely strong and durable but weigh in at about 1/3 of the weight of steel, therefore making it easier to fabricate, transport and fit. They look exactly the same as cast iron and are in every way as durable and strong. As manufacturers of bespoke cast aluminium balconies, British Spirals & Castings believe they are a strong contender in the market. All their balconies have cast aluminium decking plates with designs in, so whether you are looking for a traditional or contemporary look, they will not only allow light to pass through to the floors below, but also allow water and dirt to drain away, ensuring they do not become a slip hazard. Why not come and visit the London showroom in Highgate to see for yourself what is available and turn your dream into a reality. SHADES OF GREY Grey is full of surprises and won’t fail to seduce any setting, so follow the guide to taking advantage of its charms.

F

ifty Shades Of Grey is a best-seller with its tale of seduction, and just as irresistible is the trend for shades of grey in interiors. Gabrielle Fagan explores the sophisticated power of grey and how it transforms rooms. Grey is so sexy and sophisticated - not the masterful hero of the best-selling novel, but the decor colour. Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey has shed it’s cold, institutional image, and is proving it’s power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home. “Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone,” advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm - white based greys will feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create intriguing interest and depth. “Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, and a matching gloss paint finish for woodwork. If that feels too overpowering, tone it down with pastels, white or a zingy kick of sharp citrus, which will ensure it has less of a masculine edge.

FACE THE WALL If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. To find the one grey you love - experiment! Try colours in different tones by using sample pots, but ensure you see how they change with the light in your

1 1 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5

home throughout the day. It also works well to simply paint one wall in your chosen grey and use it as a backdrop to a focus piece of furniture such as a striking sofa or piece of furniture. FURNISHING AFFAIR Texture, shape and symmetry are vital ingredients for successful grey sanctuaries. This season, splashes of colour are an antidote to our winter gloom and almost anything goes with greys. Pinks always sit well, or you could be a little adventurous and choose a vibrant raspberry, deep purple or burnt orange and soft yellows for a lovely contrast. Grey works in modern and older properties, and will look as beautiful in a minimalist setting matched with sleek white shelving as it will with period wood panelling and mahogany furniture.” SEDUCTIVE SETTING Transform a bedroom palette with greys in decor or silky fabrics to bring an air of relaxation to an uptight setting. Hang drapery panels which puddle on the floor to frame your windows with a layer of textured sheers behind them for the ultimate in privacy. Grey tones in fabrics and wallpapers create a glamorous and striking effect, especially paired with pattern and texture. It’s a chic, streamlined look which also taps into the five-star ‘hotel’ trend which will be very evident in interiors this autumn. If passion for the look is running high, dress a bed appropriately in shades of grey bedlinen. Simple luxury touches are essential such as rugs and lighting.

wnership of a period property comes with responsibility, as well as an ongoing drain on budget due to maintenance, particularly where windows are concerned. Whilst there is inevitably a desire to improve and modernise this has to be tempered by a need to conserve. So when it comes to replacement windows, the results of poorly judged ‘improvements’ are plain for all to see and can have a disastrous effect on a building’s appearance, not to mention its value. W

e love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home. Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams. Bathroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal. A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look. THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness. 1 2 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5

AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household. LITTLE LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

Stylish flooring ideas F

inding the perfect floor design for your bathroom will add the finishing touch to your brand new look. A bathroom floor needs to be both durable and stylish to meet all of your needs and should give your bathroom a strong and solid foundation. With so much choice available, it can be hard to decide on one option. Take into consideration your daily routine and lifestyle: Do you have children who will need a slipfree and hardwearing floor? Or do you have a glamorous and grown-up bathroom suite that requires an equally chic floor? Don’t be afraid to try unusual materials, such as wood, which can work well in a bathroom, despite any concerns you might have about the humid conditions affecting the wood. Try hardwood, laminate or PVC flooring to get the same effect, but without the damp results.

1 2 8 J U LY 2 0 1 5

Floors in marble, granite or polished concrete will also create a dramatic effect and lend a chic, polished finish to your bathroom. These are all hard-wearing materials that will look stunning and last for years. For something truly unique, try cork or rubber. Popular in the 1960s and 1970s, cork is back in a big way and is one of the most eco-friendly floor options around. Rubber is warm, waterproof and easy to keep clean, so a great option for anyone with children. Solid wood or laminate floors aren’t usually suitable for bathrooms as the humidity will cause the material to discolour, swell and warp. But hardwood floorings, such as teak and bamboo, can work well (double-check with the manufacturer first) and engineered wood and bathroomspecific laminate - made with PVC - are designed to withstand moisture.

WET ROOMS W

The Essential Guide

ant a wet room, but not sure whether it will work in your home? Read on for the advantages, disadvantages and expert design tips. With a wide range of wet room styles to suit every taste, wet rooms are becoming more popular and they’re a great way to add value to your home. CAN ANYONE HAVE A WET ROOM? In theory, yes. A wet room is basically a shower room that does away with the shower screen and tray, and has an open, fully tiled shower area. If your bathroom is on the small side you probably will need to include a shower screen to prevent everything getting sprayed. WATER DRAINAGE Installing a wet room is a job for the professionals as a gradient needs to be created along the floor to channel the shower water into a drain and then the entire room needs to be tanked (waterproofed). The most common method for creating a gradient is to install a sub-floor made from WBP Ply (a type of plywood), which is then tiled over. Another option is to install a ready-made sloping shower former (a bit like a giant shower tray), which is also then tiled over. A final method is to use a giant preformed tray (sometimes known as a HiMacs system) that slopes towards a drain, and can be fitted across the entire floor without the need for tiling over. WATERPROOFING Waterproofing the wet room involves priming the floor, the lower section of the walls and the whole of the wall area around the shower and then covering with a syrupy membrane. Once it’s set, the room is then tiled. It’s also worth raising the bathroom door threshold by about 5mm from the floor in case the room fills with water (if someone covers the shower drain with a towel, for example). This will keep the water contained. ADVANTAGES OF A WET ROOM A wet room is super-stylish and perfect for creating a contemporary look. As a second bathroom, a wet room can easily increase the value of your home.

1 3 0 J U LY 2 0 1 5

G reat for small bathrooms - removing the bath creates loads more space. et rooms are, in general, easier to clean. There’s no shower screen or W tray to worry about and if you go for a wall-hung sink and toilet, it’s easier still. I f it’s done properly, your floor is better protected than it would be in a standard bathroom. DISADVANTAGES OF A WET ROOM I n small bathrooms, watch out for wet towels caused by spray from the shower. You’ll need a professional fitter to waterproof the room - if it’s not done properly leaking water can cause damage. Wet rooms should be tiled from floor to ceiling - and that’s expensive. And if you go for porous stone tiles, they may need to be resealed every few months, which is hard work. S wapping a main bathroom with a bath for a wet room could make your home less saleable - buyers want at least one bath.

YOUR WET ROOM QUESTIONS ANSWERED WHAT WILL IT COST? The cost of installing a wet room is usually between £5,000 and £10,000. If you are paying a company to tank and install the wet room, including floorto-ceiling tiles, suite and shower, expect to pay more. Retailers can offer you some ideas or may sell you those little extras you need to complete your wet room. WHAT TYPE OF TILES SHOULD I USE? Tiles are the most popular wall and floorcovering, but you can opt for sheet vinyl for the floor, or even Corian, which is a seamless, non-porous material that is low-maintenance. If you are going to use tiles, choose non-porous bathroom tiles like ceramic or porcelain. Porous tiles, such as slate, marble and limestone need sealing every few months to prevent water damage. Only use floor tiles specifically for bathrooms on the floor as they aren’t slippery.

Marble of proportions and brilliance that surely only the god Neptune could have drawn from the depths of the Italian Mediterranean. Massa Carrara has for centuries been the place where those of skill and craft have carved out tokens of sublimity, affording the palaces and country estates of Europe an enduring beauty beyond the mortal. Carrara marble has a long and distinguished history. It was the chosen material of Michelangelo, Canova and Henry Moore. Since the early Romans it has been quarried for triumphant arches, sculptures and also bathrooms. Lefroy Brooks has recently cast its anchor in this part of the world as well. Marble is the third material to be developed by the luxury bathroom brand, having established its name as the foremost provider of classic china and brassware. Within the natural fortress of Carrara’s valleys runs a road that threads through a bizarre topography marked by many Giants’ Causeways. Quarrying has transformed the Tuscan terrain. Tiers running in arpeggios up and down the hillside. Stepping stones of the gods or the artistry of an unknown mathematical intelligence? Being locked within the valley by immovable rock makes the landscape all the more alien and surreal. The designated, single source quarry ensures the hue and vein of the marble is consistent and coordinated over the Lefroy

Brooks range of basin consoles, floor tiles, bath and wall panels. Hands are as polished and worn as the marble they work, they conjure shapes in the Summer’s air. Davide describes with enthusiasm his craft, how his Italian marble may be chiseled, honed and perfected into the great, classical forms. White dust, a talcum is settled over his tools and bench, powder hung in the shaded light of the workshop. The designs are authentic reproductions of originals produced at a time when beauty, functionality and real quality were essential. There are two categories of consoles available - all marble with turned pillars and also marble tops with solid brass legs. The metal legged consoles are also available in an extended double basin format. The marble is acid etched providing an ‘antiqued’ matte finish. Consoles are also available in black Marquinha marble. Each console is engraved with the Lefroy Brooks mark of quality. Two men survey a dusty cavern for the richest vein, great blocks of marble are pulleyed down the steep valley, a dozen craftsmen gather around to chisel a giant foot from stone, capped men ready marble goods for transport from the quays, a solitary boat posted on the still waters. ecause your bathroom always has a few constant fixtures (shower, bath, toilet and basin), the accessories are what can give the room warmth and character. Luxurious touches such as a stylish mirror can make a huge difference to the comfort of your bathroom. And remember, if you place the mirror in the correct position, it can reflect off the rest of your bathroom giving you the illusion that it is bigger than perhaps it is. WHAT BATHROOM VANITY MIRROR WORKS BEST FOR ME? Do you need it to double as storage with a medicine cabinet, or are you looking for something more decorative? Your needs may change depending on which bathroom you’re looking to outfit. Is it the master bath, which will get a lot of use from two people, or a guest bathroom, used only on occasion? Draw on these factors as a guide to help you make a decision. WHAT STYLE SHOULD MY BATHROOM MIRRORS BE? If you have a contemporary bathroom, consider a sleek square design or one with a stainless steel frame - or no frame at all. If you’re going for a more eclectic look, add a mirrored face to an antique piece or choose a vintage-style Venetian option. Your walls should also help dictate your choice: are

1 3 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5

they tiled or painted? Panelled or wallpapered? Depending on your design style, your mirror frame can offer a bold contrast, or complement an already-there pattern or hue. WHAT SIZE VANITY MIRRORS SHOULD I CONSIDER? This is based both on preference and available space in your bathroom. Generally, the larger the better, particularly if you have a double vanity with a shared mirror. This is also true for small spaces - if you have a tiny bathroom, a large, shiny surface will make the space seem larger and reflect more light. The size can also help reinforce style; if you have a smaller, more traditional vanity, you may prefer the look of a decorative option no wider than the sink. The key is to strike the balance with the piece and its surrounding elements while also achieving the function you desire. SHOULD I BUY A LIGHTED MIRROR? Lighted mirrors are great because they don’t require you to compromise on lighting. Overhead lighting can create shadows, so side-lit mirrors provide even distribution of light. For a trendier version of the side-lit approach, try backlit mirrors - they are more contemporary, offer plenty of sunshine, and make for an interesting bathroom focal point.
