The much-anticipated Autumn/Winter 2015 Prêt-àPortea at the Berkeley in Knightsbridge, celebrates this season’s runway collections with chic, fashion-inspired cakes, mousses and biscuits.A favourite for fashionistas, Prêt-à-Portea at the Berkeley brings an innovative twist to the traditional English afternoon tea where the world’s leading fashion designers become the muses.
T
he A/W catwalks were bursting with sartorial sweet inspiration, from the beautiful florals from Dolce & Gabbana’s ‘Viva La Mama’ collection – recreating the dress of the season as a lychee and almond mousse with rose detailing – to the array of feminine pink hues at Alexis Mabille, reimagined with vanilla panna cotta and chestnut cream duchesse satin, topped with a large pink chocolate bow. Also stepping off the runway is this season’s hottest heel as a cinnamon Mary Jane biscuit, decorated with a sprinkling of delicate rose petals and sparkling sugar crystals à la Dolce & Gabbana. Following the recent launch of her first store, Simone Rocha was a firm favourite with our chefs, who have turned her ethereal embroidered tulle dress into a vanilla éclair filled with salted caramel crème patissiere decorated with red sugar flowers. Other fashion favourites include Moschino’s quirky cartoon-inspired nu-rave cream and orange financier dress and coconut savarin topped with a button of yellow and red chocolate. Alice Temperley’s flutura skirt becomes a gianduja chocolate supreme set on sable Breton glazed with chocolate mirroire, sprinkled with edible gold and a bright blue chocolate flower.
20 DECEMBER2015
The Berkeley launches its Autumn/ Winter 2015 Prêt-à-Portea Collection with Dolce & Gabbana taking centre stage Valentino adds a further splash of colour with a rockstud striped Victoria sponge shoulder bag with cranberry compote amidst multi-coloured striped chocolate, finished with a golden handle. Palazzo Penthouse awarded best apartment in the UK
P
icture-perfect Palazzo Penthouse in Hadley Wood is the talk of the town after being named the UK’s finest new apartment in the International Property Awards. Such an accolade represents a world-renowned mark of excellence in the fine art of luxury home design and elevates Palazzo Penthouse to be recognised as the jewel in the crown of Fusion Residential’s peerless portfolio of pristine properties. Palazzo is a custom-built condominium of apartments in beautiful tree-lined Beech Hill, one of the most soughtafter addresses in the Home Counties. Palazzo – which means palace in Italian, the language of love - is exquisitely finished and boasts a galaxy of lifeenriching furnishings, fixtures and fittings, brought together with enviable style and finesse. In any language, to cast your eyes on Palazzo Penthouse, is love at first sight. With electronic gated entrance and discrete underground parking, Palazzo is a showcase of six supersumptuous concierge serviced three bedroom apartments with wide-open outdoor terraces offering panoramic views of the countryside. It is a personality trait of the Fusion Residential team to exceed expectations in every aspect and this latest accolade – a third consecutive year of honours in the International Property Awards - provides proof positive that the Letchmore Heath-based Design House is now considered amongst the very best in the UK. Fusion Residential Managing Director Antoine Christoforou is justifiably thrilled with this latest honour, which comes after Palazzo was named Hertfordshire’s best new apartment in the previous round of the awards programme. Filmmaking experts prepare spellbinding Hogwarts in the Snow feature
This festive season, film fans are invited to discover how special effects experts make snow that never melts, how set dressers transform locations for Christmas scenes, and how flames are created without fire, as Warner Bros. Studio Tour London opens the doors on its most magical makeover yet.
H
ogwarts in the Snow will offer visitors the opportunity to see the Harry Potter film series’ most iconic sets decorated for festive scenes. Eight Christmas trees will line the Great Hall, the Gryffindor common room will be dressed for the season and a blanket of filmmaking snow will be meticulously applied to the majestic Hogwarts castle model.
28 DECEMBER2015
Until Sunday 31st Jan uary 2016
In the Hogwarts Great Hall, visitors will spot wreaths and garlands, trees decked with golden baubles and topped with witches on miniature broomsticks, as well as a replica feast. One side of the Great Hall will be dedicated to savoury props, featuring roast turkeys, hams studded with cherries and bowls of potatoes, while the other will be devoted to sweet treats including flaming Christmas puddings and iced cakes. For the first time this year, the Goblet of Fire will emerge from its original jewelled casket, rigged by special effects experts, and will be ‘lit’ with flames that change from blue to red. Featured in the fourth film, the impressive goblet was used as a way to select champions for the Triwizard Tournament. During production, the picture-perfect hero version was sculpted from a single piece of wood by the Prop Making Department, while a special effects replica was moulded in fibreglass and painted to look identical to its wooden counterpart. The Hogwarts castle model will be transformed for the occasion by a team led by Model Effects Supervisor José Granell, who worked on the Harry Potter film series. The snow is hand-sprinkled onto the incredibly-detailed model and is made from a combination of granulated paper and grains of salt – chosen because it clumps like real snowflakes and catches the light like ice. Visitors will be able to touch samples of the different types of ‘snow’ used during production, each selected for its ability to float like falling snow, crunch under foot or glisten in the light.
The scale model was first built for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with a team of 80 model makers working for almost seven months to create the original version. The crew updated it over the years when the story required it (the bridge was added for Prisoner of Azkaban, the Owlery for Goblet of Fire, and the Astronomy Tower for Half-Blood Prince), and the model was used for nearly every exterior shot of Hogwarts seen in the first six Harry Potter films. The specialist work was so detailed that it would have taken one person more than 74 years to complete! Fireplaces throughout the attraction (including those in the Leaky Cauldron and Great Hall) will be ‘lit’ with special effects fire, created by filmmakers using a combination of water vapour and lighting effects. The Gryffindor common room and Weasley kitchen will also be dressed for the occasion with streamers, Christmas crackers and oranges. FESTIVE FACTS The food featured in the feasts throughout the early films was
real; however, the Set Decoration Department later used artificial food created from powder and resin. While the film series’ Christmas scenes feel very festive, many of them were actually filmed at unexpected times of year (even during summer) depending on the production schedule. Christmas puddings were rigged with real flames for the Great Hall’s Christmas feast, with gas pipes hidden along the floor and running up into the tables. This special effect will be recreated at the Studio Tour this year, especially for the attraction’s festive feature. Hogwarts in the Snow will run until Sunday 31st January 2016. Tickets must be pre-booked and all extra activities are included in the ticket price. THE DETAILS Visit www.wbstudiotour.co.uk or by calling the Studio Tour’s Visitor Services Team on 0845 084 0900 and cannot be bought at the attraction. WBTourLondon #HogwartsInTheSnow

Christmas at Kew As twilight falls...the magic begins...
C
hristmas at Kew once again combines Kew’s breathtaking winter landscape with a new, glittering mile long trail, creating a magical after dark experience. Now in its third year, the winter light experience for 2015 focuses on the Christmas tree and Kew’s special part in its history. It was Queen Charlotte, a founder of Kew Gardens, who first dressed branches of a Christmas tree in one of the largest rooms at Kew Palace for all to enjoy in the 1790s. Visitors can wander beneath bewitching tree canopies drenched in Christmas hues, and gaze at glowing waterside reflections as clusters of illuminated fountains dance in an explosion of colour, set against the iconic Palm House. Walk through playful ribbons of light, count the Christmas trees festooned with seasonal cheer, and listen to the Choir of the Holly Bushes as they twinkle in time to festive music. Stroll along a fairytale avenue of largerthan-life winter flora featuring much loved snowdrops and Christmas roses. Stop at the scented Fire Garden for a moment of reflection and take time with family and friends to contemplate the year almost gone and look forward to the year to come. The younger members of the family can catch a glimpse of Santa and his elves putting the finishing touches to their Christmas preparations on the stage behind the Princess of Wales Conservatory. A Victorian Carousel and
family rides, can be found at the White Peaks Cafe. Keep warm under the stars with a mulled wine, spiced cider, or hot chocolate, as well as roasted chestnuts, toasted marshmallows, and other sumptuous traditional Christmas fare. Kew’s tastefully curated shops at Victoria Plaza and White Peaks are the perfect place to pick up unique gifts for the whole family.

Forest Restaurant & Cabin Bar
‘On the roof’ at Selfridges
orest Restaurant & Bar evokes the beautiful autumnal forest and woodlands of England. Inspired by foraging trips to Britain’s lush forests, the menu includes hearty hot pots, grilled meats and fish and seasonal vegetable dishes. The Cabin Bar, situated on the terrace, which has its own entrance, is the perfect spot to escape and indulge in the roof’s renowned Choctails, seasonal ales and warming mulled wine and cider. The menu concept for Forest Restaurant - ‘foraging and foresting to fork’ - is inspired by the wealth of produce found in Britain’s vibrant woodland. Forest’s kitchen, headed up by Chris Dargavel, previously the Head Chef at On the Roof with Vintage Salt, and overseen by Lee Bull, Chef Director of the Des McDonald group. Fergal Dooley, previously at Holborn Dining Room will be the General Manager. Starters include: Windsor Estate mallard on toast and a mulled cider vinaigrette, Foxes Farm pumpkin & goat’s cheese tart and Juniper gin cured salmon served with pickled cucumber. Guests can choose from an array of main dishes including: Baked game meatballs served with vegetable orzo, Wild Highland Roe deer fillet with kale and an elderberry sauce, and truffled mushroom risotto and Duck shepherd’s pie with autumn squash. Head Pastry Chef Siobhan Ambrose has created a beautiful dessert menu which will feature: Chocolate Forest; Rose custard tart, Treacle sponge served with whisky Anglaise, and a Pina Colada jelly. The Cabin Bar, located on the terrace houses outdoor lodges, comes complete with blankets to keep guests warm and a bespoke photo-booth lodge. The drinks menu presents an assortment of carefully selected wines, beer, cocktails and soft drinks. The cocktail list includes; ‘Smokey & Sour’ – a blend of Black Label, rosemary, lemon juice, maple syrup, La Phroag and Burlesque Bitters, ‘Truffle Martini’ – an innovative mix of Gin, vermouth and truffle oil and ‘Fancy Nogg’ – a warming mix of Brandy, Frangelico, milk, cream, honey, hazelnut and nutmeg. The popular ‘choctails’ returns to the roof with a new selection to warm guests on chilly nights. This will include ‘Gingerbread Chocktail’ – a delicious concoction of Gingerbread liqueur, rum and hot chocolate. Also on the Choctail menu are the ‘Spiced Banana Choctail’ – Banana liqueur, rum and hot chocolate and the ‘Chestnut Choctail – Crème de Chataigne, white chocolate liqueur and hot chocolate. In addition to the Express Lift on the Ground Floor in the Fragrance Hall, Forest can also be accessed via a landscaped staircase on the fourth floor, leading guests directly to the Cabin Bar. Nathan Herrmann, Selfridges Food and Restaurants Director comments: “We are excited to offer our shoppers a fantastic place to pause on their Christmas shopping to savour the best of the ‘Forest’. We are sure our customers will be enchanted by the view, décor and food.” Des McDonald comments: “I am delighted to be opening our fourth rooftop concept, Forest Restaurant & Cabin Bar on the Roof. We really enjoy working with Selfridges and are excited to transform the room into another successful residency.” Forest Restaurant & Bar will join the Des McDonald Restaurant Group which includes his other new openings; The Printing Press and Burr & Co in Edinburgh, The Refectory and Chapter House in York and his London restaurants; Q Grill Chalk Farm, Vintage Salt Upper Street, Vintage Salt Liverpool Street and Holborn Dining Room. More restaurant openings are planned for 2016.

The Perfect Theatrical Christmas Gift! James Haddrell offers some last minute shopping ideas...
I
n the mad rush to find that perfect Christmas present, the latest must-have box-set, newly released page-turner or favourite perfume will certainly top most people’s list, but for me there is something special about choosing to give somebody theatre tickets. Whether it’s something for children or adults, for family or friend, you can always track down the ideal show – and for an even more personal gift you can book to go and see a show with someone. Not only are you guaranteeing them a visit to a unique live event, you’re buying an experience to share that they’ll remember forever. At Greenwich Theatre our Spring Season is designed to offer something for anyone looking for that perfect gift. For children the highlight of the season has to be the UK premiere of American musical Rapunzel, written by the team behind international mega-hit TV show Friends, coming to the theatre for February half-term. For comedy lovers, Radio 4 favourite Tim Fitzhigham has written a new show about his attempts to recreate history’s greatest bets pushing a wheelbarrow 25 miles (as first attempted by Goliath Shadbolt in 1789), standing on one leg for 12 hours (a bet from the year 1815), racing a racehorse over 100 yards (yes, he races a racehorse) and more - so snapping up tickets before Christmas should ensure a place at a comedy night to remember. For those looking for something a bit more classical, international theatre company Moon Fool and the astonishing Anna-Helena McLean bring A Midsummer Night’s Dream to life in the unique musical solo performance Titania. A heady fusion of original music and vocal acrobatics, Titania retells the Queen of the Faeries’ tale from a new perspective with an amplified twist. We also have a chance for people to uncover some amazing new theatre from two companies destined to find fame in the future,
56 DECEMBER2015
giving that unique opportunity to say “I saw them before they were famous”. First, Lost Watch Theatre Company bring Goodstock, an emotional, uplifting true story about one young woman’s attempt to come to terms with life-changing news. Then the Human Zoo Theatre Company present a collection of new fairy tales in the eagerly anticipated The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Moon. Theatre is important for so many reasons. It can help us understand the world or the society we live in, or let us escape from that world for some pure escapism. It can entertain, it can educate, it can celebrate and it can challenge. Most of all though, a trip to the theatre is a shared experience. No two nights at the theatre are ever the same, but everyone in the audience on any particular night shares that unique performance with the performers on stage, and creates a new memory to share. What better Christmas present could there be? James Haddrell is Artistic & Executive Director of Greenwich Theatre, and founder and producer of the Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival.

FASHION
Liberty in fashion
Fashion and Textile Museum has launched a major new exhibition, exploring the iconic Liberty brand in fashion to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the company.
O
ver 150 garments, textiles and objects demonstrate Liberty’s strong relationships with designers from Arthur Silver of Silver Studio to collaborations with Jean Muir, Cacharel, Yves Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood. The exhibition charts Liberty’s history as ‘the’ fashionable place to shop as well as its role as the source and originator of key trends in fashion history, from Orientalism and Aesthetic dress in the 19th century, through Art Nouveau and Art Deco in the early 20th century, and the revival of these styles since the 1950s. Liberty Art Fabrics and the textile design studio take centre stage, as the internationally recognised leader in floral, patterned and paisley prints and dress fabrics. At the cutting edge of design and the decorative arts since 1875, Liberty is celebrated throughout the world both as a department store and for its distinctive textile prints. Founded by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, the store began on Regent Street in 1875, soon becoming one of ‘the’ shops in London. Arthur Liberty’s clients and friends included the artists and aesthetes Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Frederic Leighton, Oscar Wilde, Dame Ellen Terry and James McNeill Whistler. The Liberty dress department opened in 1884 and Liberty style soon became firmly associated with a unique ‘fashion’ look. Liberty continued to adapt to changing taste whilst maintaining its identity. The Twenties and Thirties saw the development of the floral prints that are still associated with the company and were a mainstay of these decades. ‘Young Liberty’ was introduced in the 1950s, showcasing the best of new British and international design. A wave of young designers in the Sixties embraced Liberty fabrics and the textile design studio continued to produce up-to-date, innovative designs. Designers such as Mary Quant, Foale and Tuffin, Gina Fratini and Jean Muir contributed to the company’s key role in the fashion of the 1970s. Liberty continues to inspire fashion today as designers around the world feature the brand’s distinctive textiles. Ed Burstell, Managing Director, Liberty London, said: “Liberty is one of the last great emporiums of its kind and I am thrilled that this exhibition is being organised by Zandra Rhodes and the Fashion and Textile Museum London, a museum which has pioneered displays on the relationship between fashion, fabric design and innovative British retailing.”

HoHoHo! It is likely that many of us will at some stage in our lives be a landlord of a property. Being a landlord can prove lucrative if done properly but many landlords take their legal obligations lightly and try to cut corners, such landlords will often find themselves in difficulties. Below is a list of issues a landlord should consider when letting a property to avoid being on Santa’s naughty list this year! CONSENTS If the property is mortgaged and a landlord does not specifically have a buy to let mortgage then he will need to inform his mortgage provider about his intentions and seek their consent. If it is for a short period of time they will often allow this on payment of a fee. On other occasions, a landlord may need to transfer to a buy to let mortgage. If a landlord is proposing to let a flat, he will need to check his lease as some leases will require a landlord to obtain permission from his landlord before subletting a property. If a landlord proposes to let a property to multiple tenants then the property may become a House in Multiple Occupation and a licence will be required from the local authority. TENANCY There are many standard tenancy agreements available to prospective tenants however it is advisable to get advice on these agreements or arrange for a solicitor to draw one up for you. It is likely most agreements will be assured shorthold tenancy agreements. It is important that you think about any specific obligations you would like the tenant to carry out during the tenancy, for instance keeping a driveway free of weeds. Further in order to avoid disputes in the future it is useful to have an agreed inventory attached to the tenancy agreement. Specifically recording the condition of the premises and included furnishings from the outset means that both the landlord and the tenant are protected. DEPOSIT Since 6th April 2007, deposits taken in connection with an assured shorthold tenancy must be protected in a government approved tenancy deposit scheme. Landlords are also required to serve prescribed information on the tenant. If landlords fail to do this they could be faced with a claim by the tenant which could result in the return of the deposit and paying a penalty of up to three times the deposit. It is therefore important that the landlord gets this right. Due to piecemeal changes to the legislation, this area of law is complex and therefore it is advisable to seek advice. INSURANCE It is extremely vital that landlords obtain the correct insurance for the building. Standard building and contents insurance will be insufficient and landlords need to make sure they have a specific landlord’s policy. REPAIRS Landlords are required to keep the structure of the property in repair and properly maintained. Section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 which applies to tenancies of dwellings granted for a term of less than seven years imposes a statutory obligation on the landlord to keep in repair the structure, exterior and installations for the supply of essential services. If the tenancy is for more than 7 years then it will not be caught by section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 but the repairing obligations in the tenancy will apply. It is important landlords comply with these obligations otherwise you could be faced with an action for damages for disrepair.
FEATURE
How landlords can avoid Santa’s naughty list this year!
GAS SAFETY CHECKS Landlords who provide any gas appliances in the property must ensure that annual gas safety checks are carried out by an engineer on the Gas Safety Register and a copy of the certificate is provided to the tenant. If such a certificate has not been provided then the landlord cannot serve a notice pursuant to section 21 of the Housing Act 1988 to obtain possession (“Section 21 Notice) of a property let under an assured shorthold tenancy agreement.
ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE Under Regulation 2 of the Assured Shorthold Tenancy Notices and Prescribed Requirements (England) Regulations 2015 unless landlords provide tenants with an energy performance certificate free of charge they are unable to serve a Section 21 Notice. SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS From 1st October 2015 all landlords of private sector properties in England are required to comply with the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015. This provides that in relation to all tenancies including those granted before 1st October 2015 the landlord must ensure: a smoke alarm is installed on each storey of the property that is wholly or partly used as living accommodation; a carbon monoxide alarm is installed in any room that is wholly or partly used as living accommodation and contains a solid fuel burning combustion appliance. It is your responsibility to ensure that all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are in proper working order at the start of any new tenancy granted on or after 1st October 2015. IMMIGRATION STATUS OF TENANTS From the 1st February 2016 all landlords in England will have to check the status of prospective tenants under the Immigration Act 2014. The Act prohibits landlords or residential properties from allowing certain people to occupy these properties. The landlords will have to check the status of prospective tenants and other authorised occupiers to ascertain whether they have the right to occupy the premises before granting the tenancy. The obligation however extends further as it provides that the landlord must also make sure that someone’s right to occupy the premises does not lapse during the period of their occupation. A breach of this provision could lead to a civil penalty of £3,000. INSPECTIONS It is advisable for landlords to undertaken regular inspections throughout the tenancy. This will allow you to keep an eye on the condition of the property as the tenancy continues. A provision preserving a landlord’s right to inspect on reasonable notice should be included in the tenancy agreement to allow you to do this. Letting property should in theory be quite straightforward but landlords must be aware of the potential pitfalls. Burberry’s Christopher Bailey to design
The Claridge’s Christmas Tree 2015 Claridge’s, London’s legendary Mayfair hotel, has announced that this year its celebrated Christmas Tree will be designed by the hotel’s long-time friend Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative and Chief Executive Officer. To be unveiled on 16th November 2015, this will mark the first time that Claridge’s will have a British designed Christmas Tree.
T
his year’s Claridge’s Christmas Tree will be an innovative and modern contrast to the art deco design of the hotel, exploring the concept of light and shadow reflecting around the iconic lobby. Drawing inspiration from Burberry’s longstanding heritage of providing protection against the elements, the Christmas Tree will comprise of over 100 umbrellas, each finished in bespoke gold and silver metallic fabric. The lights around the tree will pick up movement as guests walk by, sending thousands of twinkling lights into life to create a magical spectacle befitting this joyous time of year. The Claridge’s Christmas Tree has long been a festive landmark in the capital, drawing visitors and Londoners alike to admire its magnificent design. This is the sixth year that Claridge’s has invited a favourite guest to reinterpret the tree in their own distinctive style. Thomas Kochs, Claridge’s General Manager, commented, “Christmas has always been a truly special time of year at Claridge’s and we are delighted to welcome Christopher Bailey to add the enchanting Christmas magic and creativity of Burberry to our lobby. We are particularly proud to be flying the British flag this year with London being at the heart of both Claridge’s and Burberry, and it is this shared sense of heritage and the key part we both play in London life that makes Christopher’s collaboration with us so special.” Christopher Bailey said: “Christmas is one of my favourite times of year so I was delighted to be asked to design the Claridge’s Christmas Tree - the iconic hotel celebrating a joyful time. We wanted the tree to reflect the playfulness of the season with a little bit of the English weather thrown in. We also love the idea that the tree comes to life as guests pass by bringing a wonderful touch of festive magic to their stay.” Claridge’s and Burberry’s longstanding relationship has been enjoyed by guests of the hotel for years, most famously with the offering of Heritage Trench Coats in all of the hotel’s suites. This festive season, ‘Burberry Bellboys’ will also be on hand to help guests with their Christmas wish lists. THE DETAILS Claridge’s The Connaught,The Berkeley Maybourne Hotel Group www.maybourne.com

True inspiration for mind, body and spirit LUSKINTYRE BEACH
Exploring the wild beauty of the Scottish Highlands and Islands in some of Europe’s most ancient and dramatic landscapes is truly inspirational for mind, body and spirit and going ashore on a Hebridean Princess cruise is often to inaccessible lochs and bays allowing for an even more invigorating experience.
T
he effects of the Gulf Stream bring a warmth and a fertility to this region and our long-standing connections in this remote corner of the kingdom enable us to arrange visits to privately owned castles and gardens, with an opportunity to talk to the owners and enjoy the different dimension of a visit that is utterly personal. Small numbers and common interests ensure that visits ashore are fascinating and utterly enjoyable. ‘A Floating Country House’ is how we have described Hebridean Princess for many years and remain true to the original description. Fifty like-minded guests mix in a convivial atmosphere and create a house party mood. After an energetic walk ashore, the comfort and homeliness of Hebridean Princess welcomes you back as though to your own home; and that is how we, and more importantly our guests, like to think of this unusual little ship. ‘Like home but better’ is how she has been described. The Tiree Lounge, with its intimate bar, is the social focal point; beautifully designed and filled with soft armchairs and welcoming sofas providing cosy areas grouped around perhaps the most extraordinary feature of the ship – a brick inglenook fireplace! experience that, after a morning or afternoon ashore, guests are eager to be taken to the very finest destinations of haute cuisine created by a talented brigade of chefs who use the freshest and finest ingredients procured from local suppliers. Dinners and most lunches are served in the elegant Columba Restaurant, through whose large windows the scenery glides by as you dine. Gala Dinners are sparkling occasions, from the Champagne reception in the Tiree Lounge to a gourmet meal – and no cruise would be complete without a traditional recital of Robert Burns’ Address to the Haggis! If you would like to be known by your name within moments of coming on board, to have your smallest preferences remembered, then mass-market style cruising will never be a satisfactory alternative. Everything we do receives the same level of care and attention; from the carefully conceived shore visits to the spectacular overnight anchorages, the exquisite menus and the unique and individually designed cabins, every little detail aims to ensure that the whole experience is so complete that you will never even notice. Discreet service is the bedrock of our reputation and the uncannily accurate anticipation of your needs is a skill that our crew has developed into almost an art form. For us, resoluteness in the pursuit of perfection is something for which, in our view, there is no alternative. Behind the scenes we will be striving day and night to ensure that yours is the best holiday you have taken. Your job is to simply sit back, relax and slow down – Hebridean style! THE DETAILS

Made in London in 1659 and stamped with the maker’s mark of ET, with a crescent below, it is selling for £6,500. Very few wine tasters were made by English silversmiths because wine was not a national product and the production of decorative silverware, especially a wine taster, would have been severely frowned upon during the puritanical rule of Cromwell, which adds to the rarity of this example. There are light refreshments available within the fair itself or treat your friends to a meal in one of the two Gordon Ramsay restaurants within the hotel. So much in vogue these days are Art Deco and mid-20th century furniture and accessories like a very early mid-20th century sideboard credenza designed by Robert Heritage, with the decorative design by his wife Dorothy. The sideboard was made by GW Evans for Heals of Tottenham Court Road, c1950, and is priced at £12,500. They are a magnet for interior decorators, designers, and discerning private buyers who want an individual look in their homes. More than 140 exhibitors from Europe and the UK offer fine and decorative antiques, stylish 20th century design, accessories such as lighting and mirrors, and works of art from all periods to the contemporary. What sets the Decorative Fair apart is the creativity and inspiration of the stand displays, the relaxed and cheerful atmosphere and a thrilling element of the unexpected; you never know what you might find around each corner. From period shop signs and advertising accessories to taxidermy, objets trouvés and fossils, exhibitors have an eye for the distinctly unusual! Decoration has never been such fun. Easy to access from Chelsea, Sloane Square and Knightsbridge, there is a frequent courtesy shuttle service to the Fair from outside the Sloane Square Hotel. Well-behaved dogs (on leads) are welcomed. Delicious food from Megan’s Brasserie & Champagne Bar is available all day, whilst on-site packing and shipping facilities make life easy for international and UK buyers. The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair has just celebrated its 30th birthday. In September 1985 when it launched, the ‘Country House’ look was at its height, the Fair was the only major antiques event to sell painted decorative furniture and almost no exhibitors stocked items later than 1930. Since then the Fair has embraced post-war and mid-century design, contemporary art and the industrial look, and is anticipating the design changes of the next three decades! Admission: £10.00 including catalogue, which gives re-admission throughout the week, or register via the website to join the Fair’s mailing list for free tickets to all future Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fairs. n the three decades that the Decorative Fair has been running, the dealers that sell at it have offered visitors a wealth of antiques-hunting insight. Now, more than ever, antiques are being mixed into chic modern interiors, as well as to add authenticity to period homes. Here, the dealers that know the market best, offer us their insider tips for buying and decorating with unique finds. Read on to become an antiqueshunting expert...
GABY VAN SCHAGEN AT DECORATIVE ART FAIR
Must-know tips for buying antiques
The experts from the Decorative Fair in Battersea pass on their top tips for buying standout antiques.
1. Dealers are always generous with their knowledge. Get to know a dealer who has stock you like, and who is comfortable with their subject but not complacent. Good dealers are always learning and will say so. 2. Whether you paid a few pounds or several thousand, money spent on something unique will maintain value much better than a brand new item that is available on the mass market. 3. Have confidence in who you are buying from: always go to reputable dealers, members of trade associations or those at a vetted fair. Draw on their knowledge to help you make the right choice, especially if you are concerned about buying items in their original condition that have not undergone major restoration. 4. If you like a piece of upholstered furniture but not the colour or textile, don’t be afraid to ask the dealer if they will consider re-covering within the asking price. If it’s a valuable piece, they often will. 5. I t is often preferable to buy items in their original state as they retain their value for longer, unless you are going for a certain ‘look’.For example, painted furniture retaining its original paint finish carries a higher price tag than a utility piece that has been painted again over the years. 6. L ess is more. The same is true whether furnishing your home with antique, 20th-century or contemporary furniture. You can go for a streamlined look using unembellished furniture if you want a more contemporary feel. Owning antiques doesn’t equal clutter! 7. W hatever period you are interested in, look for quality of manufacture. And ask a dealer if you are not sure. 8. I f you become interested in a specialist field, it’s worth investing in one or two well-regarded books on the subject. There are dealers in new and second-hand collectors’ and design books who are worth consulting. 9. D o use magazines to get inspiration for using antiques and period pieces. Magazine stylists have a good eye, and often put unusual and striking combinations together.
STREET MARBURG WITH FURNITURE & CHARLOTTE CASEDEJUS WITH LINENS, AT DECORATIVE ART FAIR
JOSEPHINE RYAN
10. Check a piece of furniture before you buy it. Don’t be afraid to open drawers or cupboards to check that the age of lining and interior woods corresponds to the exterior surface. Check for modern screws or nails. Older pieces should have wooden fixings as a general rule. English painted furniture originates from the late 18th century and would have used light, inexpensive woods such as pine or beech, not mahogany or more expensive hardwoods. 11. Tone is important – you can combine a number of colours as long as they are of similar hue. Contrast – don’t put brown on brown, else you will find antiques look rather old-fashioned. Again, dealers will inspire you with their mix of stock and periods, using colour as well as easy-to-live-with neutrals. 12. Antiques and vintage items are unique, create an atmosphere of their own and express individuality. Unlike new furniture, which usually has to be ordered and waited on for weeks, you can take an antique home with you, or have it delivered right away. Follow your gut instinct when buying and you will be rewarded. 13. When hunting, make sure you have dimensions of the space you wish to fill (whether for furniture, mirrors, rugs, lighting etc) so you can make sure what you find will fit the space! Oh and carry a tape measure – always useful! Next event at Battersea is the Winter Fair, 19-24 January 2016

However many times you said “A b is like this” and showed her, it didn’t seem to go in. THE STUGGLE Homework was one of the biggest issues in our life. She hated, doing homework and I mean really hated it. So in turn as her mother, I hated it, because I always struggled to get her to do it. It would take about half an hour to persuade her to even sit down and get her books out. Then it was just a constant struggle, literally. I would be asked how to spell every single word, and I would have to form the sentences. I would take 10 minutes to explain one question and then she didn’t understand the answer and I’d have to try and explain it from a different angle. Then I heard, through a friend, whose son was dyslexic, about the Alison Lawson program. When we considered the program, we felt if we didn’t send her on it, would we always regret the fact that we couldn’t be bothered or couldn’t afford the money? Because we weren’t prepared to take the plunge – it would mean she was disadvantaged for the rest of her life. That was the deciding factor for us. WHOLE MINDSET CHANGED Almost immediately after she completed the program I noticed drastic improvement, in all areas - self-confidence, academic ability, caring how she looked & what she wore. Her whole mind set just changed, because she started believing she could do it. WAY UP IN READING,WRITING LEVELS After the program finished, she just went way up in her levels and in her reading and writing. Her last school report was really good - she was on target for everything and the teachers were very pleased with her progress. Before, when her report came, it was said that she always made an effort, but she never got good grades. I just thought she’s not that sort of kid. Whereas now she’s getting the A’s & B’s. Before she didn’t, because she couldn’t. 84 DECEMBER2015
Now her reading age is above her age, in her last reading test at school. She had a reading age of twelve and she is ten. So that has greatly improved and obviously that helps all other areas of her school work. She would read for 24hrs a day now, if we would let her. We have to keep pulling her nose out of a book! Whereas before the treatment she didn’t read at all. HOMEWORK LESS OF A STRUGGLE Homework’s still not her most favourite thing to do. I will still be asked for help, but not nearly to the extent that I was before, and it’s just not the constant struggle. I can see that even if I have to initially explain a concept or question, she grasps that and then will take off on her own and give it a try. Whereas before she just thought ‘I can’t do it’. So she didn’t even bother to try.

EDUCATION
An exciting era of development D
uff Miller college is entering an exciting era of development. Under the guidance of its new Principal, Dr Kevin Savage, an extensive range of innovative measures are being introduced. The intention is to build on the college’s long-established strengths in order to achieve even greater heights of academic success. The most significant developments relate to three important issues: individual tutor support for students; weekly subject-specific surgeries; and class sizes. With effect from September 2016, Duff Miller guarantees to provide free additional and unlimited individual tuition to students. Provided the student has played their part fully (maintaining steady levels of effort, attendance and conduct), the college undertakes to give that student as much extra assistance as he or she needs in order to make progress. Students will also benefit from the introduction of weekly ‘drop-in’ workshops where they can talk to subject specialists about any problems they may be having with the syllabus, for example a particularly taxing homework task or new topic. These workshops will also allow students to explore extension work beyond the scope of the specification. Finally, the college has made a commitment to limit the maximum number of students per class, regardless of the level of study, from GCSE to AS to A2 and the intensive One Year A level classes. This is a significant commitment to make and one which is bound to enhance further the college’s already impressive reputation for small, focused classes led by highly experienced, well-qualified teachers. Alongside these major innovations, the Senior Leadership Team will be

introducing a series of changes to the way in which students’ progress is monitored, assessed and reported on. There will be new and stricter guidelines on the setting and marking of homework; increased Personal Tutor contact and support and generally closer relations with the student body. Now is the right time to discover the many advantages of a Duff Miller education. The Gold Standard
defines the learning at Fairley House School
F
airley House School, described by the Sunday Times as the ‘Gold Standard’, is London’s leading day school for children with Specific Learning Difficulties. Addressing the needs of children from the age of five, who require assistance due to dyslexia and dyspraxia, the school has a staff/pupil ratio of 1:3.5 and the average stay at the school is between two to three years. Children then return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude. From the start of this academic year, an exciting new development is that Fairley House is offering Key Stage 4. This will enable pupils to carry on their education in an environment that ensures that their needs are fully met. While our intention is to enable your child to re-join mainstream education as quickly as possible, our provision will now offer the possibility of remaining in our school to undertake the first major examinations that a pupil will face. Many of our alumni have enjoyed great success at GCSE and A-Level and they have progressed to top universities and have successful careers in a range of professions. We are certain that this new development will enhance the provision that Fairley House can offer. THE DETAILS

EDUCATION
Academic Excellence at Ashbourne College
A
shbourne College is an independent school, located in Kensington, with 275 students, most of whom are taking A Levels, though there is also a small number of pupils in Years 10 and 11. Rated as Outstanding by OFSTED, Ashbourne produces students who gain excellent exam results and generally go on to top-ranking universities. Obviously, the small classes and close personal attention come at a cost, which Ashbourne alleviates by offering scholarships to able students. Many of these are British, though the awards are in fact open to students of all nationalities. Ashbourne’s scholarships, which are usually worth up to 50% of the fees, are available to students in a variety of disciplines, from drama, music and art – areas in which we have a few full scholars – to maths and science. The main round of music and drama auditions takes place in November but the College sometimes awards scholarships at other times of the year. Students apply directly rather than through their school, though Ashbourne has good relations with some institutions that refer suitable students, especially for the drama auditions. All Ashbourne’s students are given a high level of individual attention not just through the exceptionally small classes but also through 90 DECEMBER2015
a personal tutor system, which ensures that every student receives the advice and encouragement that they need in order to fulfill their potential. The College offers a balance between freedom and discipline: students, especially in Year 13, are given the responsibility to manage many aspects of their lives while also receiving strong pastoral and academic support. Ashbourne also offers great flexibility: for example it offers many subjects or combinations of subjects that are not available elsewhere. This is combined with a stimulating programme of extra-curricular activities ranging from the performing arts to classes in critical theory. Ultimately Ashbourne’s overriding aim is academic excellence, with 50% of grades at A or A*, and a similar percentage of students winning places at Russell Group universities. Swimway: A NEW CONCEPT IN
SWIMMING EDUCATION
S
wimWay is the leading home visit Swimming School in London. Since 2005, the company has developed a reputation for providing high quality swimming lessons for parents & babies, children and adults. Locations include exclusive private developments, homes, schools and gyms around London, as well as 11 sites open to general public. Because SwimWay specialises in private or semi-private lessons, the children receive full, direct support inside the water from their teacher. This allows them to use only a kickboard as a floatation device without sacrificing any safety measures. Other swim schools often use backpacks, shark wings and noodles which inevitably delay the learning process. A good programme will work on fundamentals such as breath control, buoyancy, body position, gliding and correct leg kick action before introducing the full stroke. Students that are given the correct core elements will thrive, and become good swimmers. The majority of SwimWay swimming lessons are provided as one-to-one, or as semi-private classes. This allows the instructor to
6982 N VE /D DO EC MEBCE R2 20 01 15 5
create a specific lesson plan for each student. Other swimming schools have to follow a generalised swimming plan due to the high student/teacher ratio, and the number of students taught per week. The SwimWay programme has been developed inserting a combination of skills obtained from many countries throughout the world, including Australia, New-Zealand, USA, South Africa and Brazil, to provide you or your child with the best swimming lessons in London. The most important aspects of the classes are the lesson quality, teachers’ enthusiasm, and the methodology that has been developed and implemented. Of course, the environment and water quality/temperature also play an enormous factor in students’ progress. The swimming programme that SwimWay has created enables all the students to develop and practice key techniques and skills, progressing as stroke and skill competency is achieved. The technology used for booking and assessments allows the instructors to continually assess all students to ensure they are progressing through the programme. This system also allows clients to
register and view this progression from home. The SwimWay team has a huge base of knowledge and experience of which they are incredibly proud. All instructors undergo constant training and development, ensuring they are the best they can be when it comes to health and safety, and teaching techniques. This enables SwimWay to provide you with fantastic swimming lessons that are also safe, and lots of fun! SwimWay have a number of swimming pools located in London: • Kensington High Street • Putney • Kew Gardens • East Sheen • Bloomsbury • Wimbledon / Southfields • Mandarin Oriental Hotel • Streatham • Wandsworth Common For further information please email info@swimway.co.uk, telephone the SwimWay offices on 0208 871 3972or visit their website at www.swimway.co.uk

rustrated by the uniformity of high-street jewellery, Rosita Heshmati’s discoveries inspired her to set up an online designer jewellery boutique. Rosita’s craving for quality and expressive unique designs for everyday wear and special occasions led to her buying jewellery directly from small designers during frequent trips to southern Europe. “I ended up with a whole jewellery box full of these wonderful creations” she explained, “and found that I was often the envy of my friends, who began to ask me to choose items for them whenever business or pleasure took me back to this beautiful part of the world, where nothing made me happier than scouring the small streets of Venice or Istanbul for undiscovered creative gems.”
The realisation that many other women desire the same thing - jewellery that sets them apart with its originality and finesse that comes from centuries of traditional jewellery-making, combined with a Mediterranean lyrical expressionism - prompted her to explore showcasing her collections and so Expressions Des Bijoux was born. “My mission is simple – to give women access to stunning jewellery, reflecting a variety of tastes and styles from refined simplicity to luxurious drama.” “Men were also very much in mind when we set up the business”, Rosita commented. “There is little more intimate or seductive for a woman than receiving a piece of jewellery as a gift, but men are often unsure about what to choose or how to go about it. For this reason, we have arranged the collections around look and feel, so that men can easily pinpoint the style of their lady love. We also have a section of our new website which guides men through the gift-buying process - and of course, we are only too happy to help directly with suggestions too.” ‘Men were also very much in mind when we set up the business’ Rosita’s love of beauty and belief in the power of adornment began at an early age, when, during a childhood in her native Persia, she watched her mother create bespoke wedding gowns for brides-to-be. “I would sit quietly, for hour after hour, noting how a small cut or shape change could transform a dress and its wearer; how certain materials fell and draped; how hand-sewn pearls or beads added lustre and watching, mesmerised, as women were transformed before my eyes for their big day.” “I believe that women can fill a whole jewellery box in one go with us and still know they will be the only ones in the board room, at the party or wedding, to be wearing these wonderful pieces.” Expressions Des Bijoux jewellery is available from www.EdesB.com For our exclusive 15% discount and free delivery offer, code ‘londonlife’, for London Life readers. A personal quest to make the wearer
look and feel good at SoffiaB British designer Sophie Burkart created SoffiaB based on her own personal quest to find the perfect dressing gown. After many years of searching on both sides of the Atlantic she decided to design a robe that not only made the wearer look good, but felt good!
A
fter a successful career within IT, one that brought her to the United States she had the opportunity to pursue her quest and founded SoffiaB.com in November 2012. Influenced by the bold, rich fabrics and designs of the interior fabrics world, Sophie drew her inspiration from looking at curtains, cushions, sofas and wallpaper, transferring that aesthetic to a luxury dressing gown. She came up with a simple, elegant design but used printed silk to give each gown its vibrant, signature look while providing comfort and wear-ability with the luxury lining. PERTINENT PARTICULARS What’s unique to the SoffiaB dressing gown are the two linings of each collection. Whilst both Daphne and Delphine are silk, Daphne is lined with ultra soft, double napped brushed cotton. These robes are perfect for chilly temps and winter wear, encasing the wearer in warmth, yet breathable coziness. Delphine is lined with feather light, sea island cotton. These make a wonderful Spring / Summer alternative, still giving the same elegant outline but with lighter weight lining. In Spring 2016 the Delphine Collection will also be available in a shorter knee length version. 100 DECEMBER2015
Each luxury robe is made in New York’s Garment District to ensure the quality Sophie required from her dressing gowns. She chose a variety of colours and prints aiming to appeal to the different styles and tastes of women everywhere, above all she wants her customers to look gorgeous AND feel fabulous! EXCEPTIONAL DETAILS INCLUDE Robe 100% printed silk charmeuse from China or Thailand Fully lined with either 100% double napped cotton flannel or 100% sea island sateen finish, cotton from the US Accenting silk and velvet sash ties XS, S, M & L generous fit Hand finished hems Lined pockets for additional comfort Laser cut SoffiaB label to ensure a non-chafe collar French seams inside provide additional elegance Approx 55” length for coverage In addition all robes are delivered already gift wrapped in luxurious gold and black accents, so no further packaging is required! Cosmetic Dermatologist, Dr Ariel Haus Introduces
Ultherapy an Uplift not a Facelift! The new non-invasive lifting and toning procedure that reaches the same tissue targeted in a facelift but without disrupting the surface of the skin. No downtime. Visible improvement usually seen after just one treatment.
B
razilian Dermatologist, Dr Haus is proud to offer the acclaimed nonsurgical lifting procedure Ultherapy, which is the only FDA-approved non-invasive treatment for lifting the skin on the neck, chin and brow and to improve lines and wrinkles on the décolletage. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen deep within the skin, but without cutting the surface and without any downtime. The result? Tighter and firmer skin...even on the neck!
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS PROCEDURE? Ultherapy is the only non-invasive treatment that can specifically target the deep foundation below the skin, that which is typically addressed in cosmetic surgery, but without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. It is also the only procedure to use ultrasound imaging, which allows Dr Haus to actually see the layers of tissue to target during treatment and ensure the energy is directed to precisely where it will be most effective.
Dr Haus says, “Being able to offer my patients the ultimate skin technology that Ultherapy offers, allows them the opportunity to walk away with skin that they only remembered from their youth. It gives me great pleasure to see the difference in not just their outer appearance but their inner confidence too; they step out of my clinic with a bounce in their step.” WHO CAN HAVE THE TREATMENT? Ultherapy is safe and effective for all skin types and colours. HOW LONG WILL THE TREATMENT TAKE? In just one hour - and without any downtime - you will be well on your way to tighter and firmer skin. HOW MANY SESSIONS WOULD I NEED? Only one treatment is required; however, some patients may benefit from more than one treatment depending on how much laxity they have, and their body’s own biological response to the ultrasound and collagenbuilding process. HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST? Improvement following treatment is cumulative, and most patients treated with Ultherapy still have fresh young collagen a year following the procedure. HOW LONG UNTIL I SEE RESULTS? Patients may enjoy some initial effect but the ultimate lifting and toning will take place over 2-3 months, as tired collagen is replaced with new, more elastic collagen. As this collagen-building process continues, further improvements can appear up to 6 months following a procedure. Ultherapy lifts and tones your skin in one transforming treatment, minus the downtime! THE DETAILS

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Even in the coldest temperatures, women still want to look and feel their best. That also includes carrying that bronzed look through the darker evenings when we will be partying more than ever in the run-up to Christmas.
Faking it W
ith sunbeds reportedly carrying a huge risk on developing skin cancer, we are turning to fake tans – whether it be a spray tan at a salon or a DIY job at home…but after a few days we have to face the fading! Whether it’s that one annoying streak on your elbow (that you know you could have exfoliated a whole lot better) or that the shade you thought would give you a sun-soaked glow is just that little bit too far down the Dulux terracotta chart, we’ve all had a fake tan disaster. HOW TO REMOVE FAKE TAN, ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS AT ST TROPEZ: 1. ‘Don’t panic scrub. You’ll end up taking the self-tan off in patches and it’ll become a snowballing effect. Use a light body polish mixed with a 50p sized amount of bath or massage oil to encourage an even fade all over. It’s better to repeat this stage a few times all over than do one strong scrub in one place.’ 2. ‘Run a bath and fill it with a bath oil and soak your skin – the oil will soften the tan. Use a remover mitt and work in circular motions around your body to encourage the tan to fade.’ 3. ‘Go swimming. The chlorine will break down the tan. In the showers afterwards, take those exfoliating gloves and work in circular motions. Steam rooms and saunas will soften the tan, too.’ 4. ‘The Bronze Buffer Sponge is your secret weapon for tan mistakes. Its woven microfibres strip the tan off when the sponge is run over the skin. Be warned, you have to be gentle with this.’ 5. ‘’The old faithful combination of lemons and sugar mixed together will work to an extent but you really need a mitt or glove to get deeper.’ 112 DECEMBER2015
Of course, everyone knows that perfect, even fake tanning is, like so many things, all about the preparation. Here are some tips to prevent that patchy look! 1. Always exfoliate before you apply your self-tan. Exfoliating will create an even skin surface, and thus minimise the chance of an uneven tan and streaks. It will also remove any leftover tan from your last application. 2. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise….especially hands, elbows, knees and feet before you apply your tan. The moisturiser will act as a blending agent in these areas, and stop the tan from clinging in between your fingers, toes and knuckles – imagine the skin in these areas is like a sponge, it just drinks tan - so less is more. If you’re fair-haired, take a cotton bud and sweep a small amount of moisturiser over your eyebrows and hairline. 3. Always apply with a mitt. A mitt is to tan what a hairbrush is to hair essential. The mitt stops your tan from clinging to your palms and also delivers an even application. 4. Post application, remove the tan from anywhere you don’t want it to stay. So wipe your nails, your palms, in between your fingers and your finger nails. Then put a pea-sized amount of moisturiser at the bottom of your palms and rub your wrists together to blend the tan and reduce the appearance of a tanning sleeve. 5. Don’t use cheap tan. In the world of tanning you get what you pay for. Invest in tanning products with advanced formulations that are infused with other ingredients to balance out the orange and deliver golden. 6. The darker your tan, the more tanning ingredients it contains. Darker tans are harder to remove than lighter ones. If you’re nervous, opt for a lighter shade, build your confidence and then move into dark tanning.

f you had to name one designer brand that every woman aspires to and desires more than any other it would have to be Christian Louboutin high heels. Worn by some of the most beautiful women on the planet, Christian Louboutin has become a byword for international glamour. Christian Louboutin has built one of the most successful shoe brands in the world with a blend of craftsmanship and a distinctive kind of glamour. From razor sharp stilettos and lace-up boots to studded sneakers and bejewelled pumps, Louboutin’s designs carry his unique signature. After leaving school, Louboutin worked at the famous Parisian music hall, the ‘Folies Bergere’. He watched the showgirls, captivated by their flamboyant costumes in which they performed effortlessly in towering heels. He would show up with drawings of shoes for all
the dancers. “Ever since I was very young, I have been obsessed with spike heels. It’s all about the legs, how they carry themselves, the embellishment of the body. They are the ultimate icons.” Christian Louboutin established himself as a freelance designer working for Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Maud Frizon, before launching his own first boutique in 1992, in Galerie Vero Dodat, Rue Jean Jacques Rousseau, close to the Louvre Museum. This was followed by New York in 1994, and in 1997, his first London boutique on Motcomb Street. Many more glamorous boutiques and top-end concessions followed. The designer’s goal has been to “make a woman look sexy, beautiful, to make her legs look as long as [he] can” While he does offer some lower-heeled styles, Louboutin is generally associated with his dressier evening-wear designs incorporating jewelled straps, bows, feathers, patent leather and other similar decorative touches. He is most popularly known for his red-bottom high heel shoes, commonly referred to as “sammy red-bottoms”. The coloured nails, sequins and leather clasp are a playful interpretation of vibrant floral pattern and pastel hues. Make your dream weight a reality Lots of us struggle with our weight and we have all tried diets, from the sensible to the downright silly. If you have a lot to lose it can seem an impossible dream to slim down fast and safely.
B
ut a new medical treatment developed by doctors is changing all that. It is called Alevere Therapy and it is completely non-surgical, yet it is helping patients lose up to two stones a month. And, crucially, they are enjoying that rapid weight loss without being left with lots of sagging skin or lumps and bumps. The therapy, which is now available in clinics nationwide, works by launching a two-pronged attack on fat. The diet part of it makes sure patients lose weight while staying healthy and has been designed so that they eat often and do not feel hungry. Then, state-of-the-art treatments are given to them to melt away stubborn areas of fat and smooth and tighten their skin. This combination means it is possible, unlike with traditional diets, to target those areas where the weight needs to come off. The result is not just a slim body but one that has been completely reshaped. Alevere operations director Anne Welford said: “Patients are having not just their bodies but their lives completely transformed by Alevere Therapy. It is a genuinely new and radical treatment that is helping people in ways they never believed was possible. Their new confidence is a joy to see.” Patients are losing an average of between 13-26 lbs a month (6-12 kg) on Alevere Therapy. To achieve that they eat a mix
of normal foods and protein-based meal replacements, which are available in a range of sweet and savoury flavours and can be used to make all kinds of dishes, from pizza to cookies. Anne said: “The high-quality protein in our meals is combined with essential vitamins, minerals and fats so that our patients don’t feel hungry, don’t experience cravings and stay full of energy so they can exercise.” As their weight is falling, patients have regular clinic-based treatments. Medically-certified ultrasound using the latest technology helps melt fat from those resistant areas. At the same time, equipment developed in France tightens the patient’s skin. The diet is not a one-size-fits but is tailored to suit each individual. A doctor carries out a series of tests which are so accurate the patient can be told in advance how much weight they are likely to each week, and how long their full weight loss will take. Once the weight is lost, patients go onto a stabilisation programme to make sure they do not regain it and their new metabolic rate is worked out so they know exactly how much they can eat.
We are extremely proud of what we are doing and what our patients are achieving. If anyone wants to look round our clinics and talk to patients to decide whether Alevere Therapy is for them we are happy to arrange that. Just get in touch. Bupa Cromwell Hospital launches new
‘Memory Clinic’ for early diagnosis of dementia
‘Dementia’ describes a set of symptoms that may at first include minor memory loss and later difficulties with thinking, language and reasoning. It is caused when conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or a series of strokes damage the brain, and leads to a gradual decline over time.
A
ccording to the Alzheimer’s Society there are around 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, including 40,000 younger people, but it still goes undetected for many, with less than half of sufferers in England receiving a diagnosis. As dementia can have such a huge impact, not only for the person directly affected, but also family members and other carers, an early diagnosis can enable treatment and effective management of symptoms to improve quality of life. Bupa Cromwell Hospital, Kensington, has launched London’s first Memory Clinic in a private hospital setting. Led by consultant Psychiatrist Dr Justin Sauer and consultant Neurologist Dr Angus Kennedy, the Memory Clinic offers assessment of memory impairment and early diagnosis of dementia and memory related conditions. An initial consultation is followed by comprehensive, same day diagnostic tests including brain imaging to enable a swift diagnosis. Patient care is personalised and may include treatment with medication and risk factor modification, including cardiovascular and lifestyle factors, to limit the impact of symptoms. Dementia investigation at the Memory Clinic is covered by health insurers, and an all-inclusive ‘self pay’ package is also available. A GP referral isn’t necessary for ‘self pay’ patients, but this is required for those using health insurance. Bupa Cromwell Hospital is a 5 minute walk from Gloucester Road and Earls Court, or 10 minutes from Kensington High Street. All hospital services are available to everyone, whether using health insurance or ‘self-paying’, and the Hospital offers absolute discretion and privacy. arry Shiers Dentistry is a boutique general practice, established in Mayfair in 1989 practicing a range of specialist disciplines, including orthodontics, implant, cosmetic and general dentistry. Their aim is to provide painless, stress-free treatment in a relaxed and contemporary environment and to this end they seem to have achieved their goals. Tucked away in an elegant mews on Harley Street, this newly refurbished surgery is the latest in a series of three practices that Harry Shiers has run in this street. With a comprehensive patient list encompassing politicians through to Hollywood Glitterati. Harry Shiers Dentistry is regarded as “the place to go for those in the know”. Twinned with a practice in Chelsea Harbour, his team of experienced considerate staff, move purposefully in their blue and white uniforms, recognisable at either practice, the staff, have been a part of the team for a combined total of almost sixty years. “Consistency” says Harry, “Is one of the hard things to find in the modern world. Like the work we put into people’s mouths, we expect both to last a long time.” Equipped with and using the latest dental technology Harry Shiers Dentistry transforms broken, uneven and discoloured teeth into pleasing natural smiles. The treatments they provide range from hygiene and periodontal treatment, to dental implants, cosmetic and general dentistry, such as all ceramic veneers, crowns, orthodontics, Invisalign and Incognito (invisible braces), root-canal and teeth whitening. “The philosophy of Harry Shiers Dentistry” says Harry “has always been to provide the most relevant and suitable treatment for the individual patient” based on Harrys experience and education which, judging by the number of educational certificates hanging on the wall, is considerable. Harry Shiers Dentistry exudes a relaxed, calm and assuring environment which, for anxious and dental phobic patients can only be a good thing. They also offer intra-venous sedation, carried out by their consultant anaesthetist. “Comfort and confidence is very important for the wellbeing of the patient when faced with a situation that most see as nerve wracking to a greater or lesser degree.” says Harry “Intravenous sedation is a marvellous way of allaying a patients anxiety, providing a sleep akin to that which one experiences when going to bed at night. Intra-venous sedation is not a general anaesthetic and does not carry the associated risks of general anaesthesia.” Since starting his implant training in 1989, Harry has gone on to be accredited with three diplomas from the Royal college of Surgeons, the Eastman Dental Institute and his Master of Science in Implant dentistry from Guys Hospital. Currently sitting on the editorial and advisory board of a range of professional journals and having lectured nationally and internationally on this specialist interest subject (implant dentistry). HOT A
How metal is taking over our homes
ll that glitters is not gold - because silver, bronze and copper are also dazzling in decor this season and beyond. These days, metal is creeping into our homes in all guises and in all places, from wallpaper to flooring, appliances to furniture. Right now, metals in any form are huge. Today’s interior designers are using glowing metallic wallpapers to add warmth and sheen to a room and metal worked into flooring, whether it’s tiles or carpet, for richness and light. Metal can appear everywhere, from bookshelves to tiling to furniture, where it appears in sinuous sculptural forms. It’s worth considering how your chosen metal will work practically. Zinc, for example, looks beautiful on a kitchen countertop but it will change over time as it becomes stained by ingredients, warped by hot pans and scratched. Pewter is easier to maintain, or you could go for good old stainless steel, which won’t stain, although it can be scratched. Bringing on the bling couldn’t be better timed, as the most glittering of seasons, is here. But investing in some decor treasure for your home won’t be a waste, as this look is set to last long after the baubles have been packed away. The metallics trend is definitely going to stick around, so whether you’re a gold-digger, silver-seeker or just burning for bronze, there’s sure to be something to appeal... 1. Warm your interiors with rich coppery shades - The allure of rich copper to give your kitchen a glow looks beautiful - from hammered copper countertops to custom kitchen backsplash tiles, copper is the answer to your warm aesthetic questions in your head. Visit your favourite tile specialist for a mixture of copper and mosaic tiles for the kitchen or bathroom. 2. Golden hues in interiors are hotter than hot - Remember in the 1980’s when gold and brass were big interior metals and then the trend slowly faded away? Well they have returned in more subtle ways and wallpaper, furniture and ornamental cabinetry pulls and decor are big for gold and brass. If you want to add glam to your bedroom, try adding golden metallic wallpaper that has a slight sheen behind your bed as an eye-catching accent wall. Lighting fixtures such as 130 DECEMBER2015
chandeliers, wall sconces and pendant lights are showing off their new golden hues and bringing these into your home along with darker hues will add a dramatic flair to your interiors 3. A return to green living with corrugated metal - If your decorative style steers more towards the rustic and natural approach to metallic finishes, why not try the appeal of corrugated metal? In recent years corrugated metal has been used by designers for walls, ceilings, sides of cabinetry and creative accent walls in bedrooms and even adorning masculine bathrooms. Try adding corrugated metal to bring out your love for recycled and repurposed materials. 4. Cool silver metallic finishes are still top rated - When it comes to the most used and specified finishes of kitchen, bath, and interior designers it has to be the silvery metallic family of metals which include: nickel, chrome, aluminium, and stainless steel. These silvery metals are durable have high reflective qualities and come in a variety of finishes from a dull brushed finish to highly polished to sparkle in any light. 5. Mirrored furniture is all the talk of the town - If there ever has been a re-emergence of glamour added to interiors it is now! Mirrored furniture reminisces back to Hollywood Regency style with highly reflective furnishings, mirrored dressers and tables and bold colours create the look of a modern Art Deco era. Bring in mirrored furniture to your interiors and add instant glam without even having to try! 6. O rnamental metal throughout your home - While metallic finishes are seen in large quantities throughout your home, don’t forget about ornamental metals throughout your interiors that are just as important. Remember, attention is in the details and wrought iron ornamental railings and banisters are a prime area to showcase this gorgeous metal. Also look to cabinetry door pulls, door hardware and even exterior door hardware for metal subtleties. You will be surprised how metallic finishes are trending in every part of your home. The metallic trend is one that is often forgotten but once you see it, you can’t fathom how you ever forgot about this wonderful style.

HOTEL INSPIRED BATHROOMS DESIGNED BY RIPPLES
Top bathroom trends for 2016 Get ahead with the hottest bathroom trends set to rock the interiors world in 2016. We caught up with Lisa Kyme (owner of Ripples London) who tells us exactly what to look out for... SCANDI STYLING 2016 sees the trend for Scandinavian design continue, Scandinavian design is created through ample light, the use of natural wood, minimalism and functionality. If someone is looking for a Scandinavian design in their bathroom then I’d suggest looking at bathroom furniture designer Dansani (available at Ripples), they are inspired by their rich Scandinavian design heritage. HIGH SHINE In 2016 let the tiles do the talking, high shine, glossy tiles are certainly big news, go for rectified large format tiles ensuring less grout lines and a minimal, clean look.
MIRROR IMAGE Busy lifestyles have led to a demand in “his and hers” when it comes to bathrooms, double basins, his and her towel rails, two shower heads and double ended free standing baths so that we can brush our teeth together, shower and bathe together. Mirror image bathrooms are a massive new trend in bathroom design. HOTEL INSPIRED DESIGNS There is nothing more luxurious than a hotel bathroom and it’s certainly set to inspire bathroom looks in 2016. Timeless design and elegant fittings are exactly what are needed to create that beautiful hotel look. Marble is essential in hotel inspired designs. FINISHING TOUCH Special finishes on products can really give a bathroom that “wow” factor. 2015 was just the start, 2016 is a big year for bespoke, special finishes on products. Take for example a tap, I can now specify that it is finished in “red gold” or “black chrome” these special finishes really add a personal touch to a bathroom.

Beautiful and useful
2015 has been an exciting year for ceramics. There has been the BBC’s Great British Pottery Throw Down, the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent, and the opening of the dazzling Centre of Ceramic Art in York. And now, for Christmas, all good things come as ceramics. Find original, inspiring gifts in our beautifully designed gallery all with the unique story of the maker.
O
ur beautifully designed space specialises exclusively in the best in contemporary studio ceramics. With two galleries, one purely for selling, and the other devoted to a special programme of solo and group exhibitions from UK and international ceramic artists, we feature exquisite wares at surprisingly affordable prices. We are well known to collectors of ceramics but if you haven’t visited before, come and see us in the run up to Christmas. We are presenting ‘Dear Santa…’ a wonderful selection of carefully chosen ceramic objects from some of our favourite makers. ‘Dear Santa…’ is a carefully curated selling exhibition. It features elegant and detailed hand painted lustre dishes by Jonathan Chiswell-Jones alongside the beautifully thrown crystal glaze vases by Matt Horne. Eastern ceramic traditions can be seen in the porcelain Yunomis by Richard Heeley, each presented in its own box with hand painted tissue paper. The beauty of clay is its diversity and this is unmistakable not only through the artists exhibited in ‘Dear Santa…’ but also across the whole gallery. Within the retail space we display over eighty makers and in the run up to Christmas this number increases to over one hundred. December also marks the beginning of the Winter rotation. We present a new selection of featured makers every four months. Many of these artists have not shown in the gallery before. We see this as an opportunity to showcase makers, sometimes at the start of their career, who we know are the ones to watch. New to the gallery, the delicate and fragile nature of living organisms are captured in dazzling and intricate forms by Delfina Emmanuel. Her use of lustres, layers of glaze and a patient attention to detail creates fascinating objects of luxury. Claire Ireland’s characterful ‘Beasts and Creatures’, are marked by their unique smoky and painterly surfaces. Profiles are abstracted and simplified. Tiny horses feature copper manes, ‘Saggar Beasts’ show the delicate colourings created when smouldering organic materials are in contact with clay. From functional tableware through to statement collector’s pieces these are only a hint of the diverse selection of studio ceramics available from us. Whether you are seeking a special and imaginative gift, or the dream piece to add to your collection, we’ll be able to help you find something original, hand-made and with the unique story of the maker, their influences and their inspiration, behind it. We are easy to find. On Great Russell Street in Bloomsbury, just across the road from the British Museum. We are open Monday to Saturday 10:30am - 6pm. Yule
While the impact of Lord David Yule’s production of jute and tea on the economic structure of India since the early 20th century cannot be overstated it is the story of his widow, Lady Annie Henrietta that holds the most fascination.
W
hen Lord David died in 1929 Henrietta inherited £15 million, an unheard of sum at the time. Thereafter her interests ranged from big-game hunting, world cruising, stud farming, cattle ranching and film making. Her money, flair and energy built a world famous breed of Arab horses, The Hanstead Stud, second only to Crabbetts in horse-breeding history, the first privately owned steam powered yacht, the S. Y. Nahlin, and an iconic film studio, for in 1934 it was Lady Yule in collaboration with 140 DECEMBER2015
J. Arthur Rank and John Corefield who founded The British Films Institute. Remarkably, all of the above still exist. She also had a ranch called ‘Tecolote’ in Santa Barbara, California, which sadly does not. It was here she befriended the renowned Western artist Edward Borien whom she commissioned to paint frescos, large water colours and individual place cards for lavish dinner parties. In 1936 she further commissioned a large photograph album by the esteemed photographer Bert Clarke Thayer containing views of Tecolote and Lady Yule with her daughter Gladys and friends in Western and English attire together with ranch hands roping and branding cattle and a rare image of Edward Borein outside his studio in El Paseo de la Guerra. While taking this extended vacation Lady Yule made her yacht The Nahlin available to King Edward VIII and Mrs. Wallis Simpson for their ill-fated holiday in the Mediterranean. The yacht’s pennant and other significant fitments were presented to the Royal Maritime Museum in Greenwich London through the good offices of John Bly and remain there to this day. The S.Y. Nahlin has been fully refitted and is now in private ownership after an almost equally chequered career. SPIRAL STAIRCASES ARE HIGHLY VERSATILE AND CAN PROVIDE A BEAUTIFUL FEATURE BOTH INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY.
Make a Statement with a Spiral Staircase
T
his Christmas, millions of children will be following a much loved tradition, slowly edging their way down the stairs, trying desperately to control their excitement as they imagine the presents that await them when they reach the bottom! Staircases are a fundamental part of our everyday lives, and whilst not every journey up or down can be quite as exciting as Christmas morning, they really should be given careful consideration during home improvements. A quality, custom-made staircase can add a real touch of class and enhance any room or outdoor area. If you’re looking to add access to a cellar or new loft room, or perhaps just to replace your existing stairs, one option your really should consider is a spiral staircase. Practical, affordable, and incredibly versatile, spiral stairs can provide all sorts of benefits.
SPACE SAVING The most immediate and obvious advantage of having a spiral stair is the amount of space you can save. If you’re trying to update a tight space, for example, to provide access to a loft room, then they can be a really great option. For our smallest diameter of staircase, you only need around a 1200mm square space for the whole staircase. As the spiral rises, it also creates usable floor room beneath which can be used for furniture such as cabinets and bookshelves. To access a bedroom with a traditional straight staircase, you usually need an area of at least 3350mm x 800mm. With a spiral staircase, all that is required is a space of 1500mm x 1500mm, giving you much more room to stretch out and enjoy. ALMOST WORKS OF ART From the antique charms of a traditional cast staircase, to the minimalist simplicity of a low-profile hardwood spiral, your staircase can be an elegant piece of functional art. Whilst you’re probably not aiming for anything quite as ornate as the staircase at the Vatican Museum, our spiral staircases can create a real talking point, with quality you can feel every time you use them Of course, spiral stairs aren’t going to be ideal for everyone. It’s all about carefully considering your needs, both aesthetically and practically. Whether it be internal or external, straight, spiral or kited, British Spirals & Castings can deliver the perfect staircase, bespoke to your requirements. Make your bedroom
a winter sanctuary BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
A snug bedroom is the perfect place to retreat to on cold winter nights. Even the most hale and hearty types have surely been tempted to linger under the bedcovers, or take a ‘duvet day’ in these freezing, snowy times. After all, our natural reaction when cold winds blow outside is to stay where we feel snug and safe, and the ultimate retreat is our bedroom.
B
ut you’re missing a trick if you’re only using your bedroom for snoozing and loving, as ideally this space should also be a stylish sanctuary where it’s easy to relax and unwind. You can really let your imagination take flight here with decoration and furnishing as it’s the perfect private location for decor ideas or fantasies that may not be practical to indulge in anywhere else in the home. If you’re uncomfortably aware your bedroom’s not matching up to your interior dreams, there couldn’t be a better time for a revamp as you can plunder the sales for bargains in beds and bedding. Before you spend though, try to have a concept of the room and the effect you desire. There’s a lot of talk about getting the ‘wow’ factor for rooms, but in bedrooms you’re really seeking the ‘aaah’ factor’ “That means creating a room to your taste which envelops you as soon you walk in. You should immediately feel your shoulders drop as you shed tension and realise that this is where you can truly be yourself and unwind. Bedroom decor and furnishings can, with a little thought, be versatile enough suit all seasons. You don’t have to play it safe with neutrals but bear
144 DECEMBER2015
in mind that even if you love dark, closeting colours and heavy fabrics in the winter you might find them overpowering on bright, sunny days. A bed’s obviously a focal point, and currently an oversized, padded headboard is fashionable for contemporary beds, but you will see a trend for functional headboards which double as storage or a place to display photos or treasured items. Four posters are the ultimate boaster bed, while the more rustic or ornate metal bedsteads are still hugely popular. But be aware that you need to stack this style of bed with oversized cushions, so you’re not lounging back against a hard metal frame. At the end of the day, it’s the finishing touches that will turn a bedroom into the ultimate personal comfort zone…layer a bed with a throw, a runner, and cushions and bolsters in soft-to-the-touch fabrics, and make space for an easy chair and small table where you can sit and daydream. To avoid any more rude awakenings choose a dreamy new look for your bedroom that will turn it into a beautiful sanctuary. ELEGANT RETREAT This should be a sophisticated room where the decor is understated and restful and the overall effect is light and airy. Use soft paint colours on walls for a soothing atmosphere, like soft blues and lilacs. Monochrome is on trend and its classic purity would be an ideal partner for this style. Alternatively, take a more funky, masculine approach with the black, white and citrus yellow. GLAMOROUS BOUDOIR Don’t spare the colour and texture in this room, because it demands a full-on approach so that it’s indulgent, luxurious and opulent. Rich berry colours, reds, plums and purples are ideal for a space that cocoons and comforts.Have this bedroom as a gorgeous retreat, purely for rest and relaxation. There’s no room here for a home office or ugly technology. Add extra feel-good factor to the bed by using sumptuous bedspreads and throws made of silk or faux fur. And have dimmer switches and lamps so you can easily lower the lights for intimacy.

Home is where
the art is BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
I
t could be argued that we are all artists, snapping away with our mobiles and enjoying a more visual world, but all too often our ‘work’ ends up unseen. Photographs of family, friends and holidays are commonly left lingering on laptops and phones, instead of being out on display. What could be easier than dressing your walls with personal photos and artwork for an instant injection of personality? Even a single piece of art, beautifully framed, in the middle of a blank wall can have an enormous impact, especially if the piece is particularly small or particularly large,” says Romy Westwood, director of the Affordable Art Fair. Now in its 16th year, the AAF has held 111 events across 11 countries and prides itself on making art accessible for everyone. “Art creates a real focal point for a room, and symmetry of furniture or furnishings around the piece can also help to draw the eye to it. Be as creative as you want to be, even hanging objects or mirrors within the cluster to fill a space,” Westwood says. If you’re bewildered by the vast array of art on offer, or struggle to identify which photos to include in your home ‘gallery’, she advises hanging with heart. “It’s all about browsing at art fairs, visiting galleries to discover what resonates with you. Art should be an emotional experience - buy only what you love and what you want to live with. It’s all about personalising your space and making it unique to you.” SNAP IT UP There are lots of ways to display photographic wall art. Individual shots can be blown up into high-impact images and displayed as a focal point. Another successful approach is for each family member to be shot separately rather than as a group, capturing the personality of the various individuals, then each can be framed and the prints grouped together on a wall. Top Tip: Create a gallery in a hallway or corridor - use matching frames in the same size and hang them in rows to draw your eye along the space. Consider making them all monochrome with the same finish,
148 DECEMBER2015
then mount in frames in one colour to give cohesion to a display. OUT OF THE FRAME Photos and paintings don’t tell the whole story when it comes to art, as our desire for more decorative interiors has inspired a revival of artistic effects on everything, from murals to furniture. The great thing about adding art to your home is that it can be done on practically any budget. Whether it’s investing in a painted piece of furniture or framing old postcards or vintage prints, creating a cool, cohesive look is simple, effective and a great way to bring a home to life. Top Tip: It’s generally agreed that the centre point of a piece of art should be at your eye height, although there may have to be a compromise if you or your partner are considerably different heights, says Westwood. “A mid-point of 60-65 inches is usually comfortable for most people.” WALL EFFECTS Kicking convention out the window and displaying images you really love will result in walls that speak volumes about your taste and way of life. Artwork can cover everything from wall stickers through to a collection of framed favourite magazine covers, and is such an easy way to add visual impact in any space. For an inexpensive, imaginative touch, use your children’s artwork - the more abstract and playful the pictures, the more striking the display will be. Top Tip: “Don’t be afraid to put a larger picture next to a smaller one, but perhaps balance it by having two or three small pictures taking up the same space as the larger one”, suggests Westwood. “A series of different sized pieces can look striking when carefully spaced and hung at the same mid-point, but allow each one enough room to breathe. Don’t be tempted to hang paintings or prints too close together.”

TIMBER ALTERNATIVE WINDOWS CAN YOU SPOT THE DIFFERENCE? PAGE 156
WINDOWS & DOORS
First impressions The front door can make or break how good your property looks from the outside. It takes just eight seconds to decide whether or not you will buy a house, according to the latest research. And at least four of them will be spent waiting at the front door. People look at a front door before they look at anything else - your front door reflects what you think about the house. A door can sell a property.
A
front door must be in keeping with your property - planked doors can work well on barn or warehouse conversions or new-builds. But there is no escaping the universal charm of the Georgian front door - solid, well-constructed, but at the same time curiously domestic and welcoming. The classic Georgian combination of solid, panelled door with a glazed fanlight over the top, is just magic. In fact, No10 Downing Street, Britain’s most famous front door, has changed in appearance only once in 300 years. It was an “unlucky” dark green for a brief spell at the beginning of the 19th century, when Herbert Asquith was prime minister. Number10 has been black ever since. It even bears a wonky “0” in the number 10 - a tribute to the original door, which had a badly fitted zero. THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FRONT DOORS There are three main types here. Firstly you can opt for a front door made from solid wood. These are heavy and built to last, but they do require some upkeep. You’ll need to sand them down and repaint them periodically to stop the wood from rotting. However they do give you the opportunity to change the colour of the door whenever you want a change. Secondly you can get a uPVC front door. These tend to be a lot cheaper and some people buy them at the same time as getting their windows done. They’re easy to clean and never need any upkeep other than the odd wash and dry to rinse off any dirt and dust. And finally you could opt for a composite front door. As the name may suggest, they are made from a variety of different materials. The best material is chosen for each part of the door, providing the best overall performance as a result. Door knobs, knockers and letterboxes should be in keeping with one another and sympathetic to the size and style of the door. Simple brass ring knockers and “Doctor’s” door knockers, popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, are two simple styles that suit both panelled and plank doors. Octagonal or round door knobs and handles and plain letterboxes work well with this simple look. Lionhead knockers and knobs with ornate embellishment are typical of the Queen Anne period while reeded (ridged) door furniture was used in late Georgian and early Victorian times. Edwardian door furniture is plain, with simple reeding, while Victorian is slightly heavier. Traditional-style door furniture coated in brushed and 154 DECEMBER2015
polished chrome and nickel creates a more contemporary look and works well with flatter, lighter colours. FOCUSING ON SECURITY Clearly security will be an important element of any front door you choose. Ideally you should opt for one that offers multipoint locks. This essentially means the door will be locked into place at more than one point by a series of strong bolts. Your front door should ideally always have a split spindle design. This means when you close the door from the outside, the only way of getting back in is to use a key. It also means a thief cannot get into your house by opening the door by the handle from the outside (unless you have locked it from the inside). Multipoint locks should always have bolts that move into place by an upward turn of the handle from inside or outside your home. You then use the key provided to keep them in place. In some cases compression bolts are also provided in the door, to further secure it into the frame. Clearly the more bolts you have the more secure it will be.

Timber Alternative Windows Can you spot the difference? N O TI LU O EV

ot so long ago most windows and their frames were made of wood and, to a lesser extent, aluminium. But during the 1960s improved uPVC manufacturing quality created a cheap, easy-tomake alternative that was low maintenance and energy efficient. Windows made of uPVC are a great social divider, much like hot tubs, solar panels and fake grass! Because anyone adding uPVC windows to their homes are more concerned about cost than beauty, whilst wood is perceived to be authentic and long lasting. With this in mind, Evolution Windows developed a brand new genre of windows, taking design inspiration from the beautiful aesthetics of timber but without all the drawbacks of the time consuming maintenance and costly upkeep associated with wooden windows, they created the ‘Timber Alternative’ window. Evolution Windows really do have to be seen to be believed, the intricately detailed, handcrafted elements of their windows really take them to the next level and it’s difficult to believe they are not real timber windows! They aim to provide the very best product that will last for years, adding value and keeping your property looking beautiful. The attention to detail sets them apart – from the attractive wood effect finishing to the timber-like proportions diligently hand made by craftsmen, to the beautiful hardware options, everything has quality in mind.
Since 2004 Evolution Windows have developed two ground breaking product ranges: Storm 2 – a high performance stormproof window and Evolution Flush – a timber alternative, flush fitting window range.
Evolution STORM 2 Windows ar e The ‘Storm 2’ Evolution window is ideal for those wanting the perfect solution to replace timber windows, or aspire to achieve the look for the man y of timber windows but without the laborious sanding and and styles of ages homes painting that is required every few years. The Evolution all across th e wood grain effect laminate ensures a seamless finish and a UK. maintenance free window and the heat generated in the home will be retained by the high energy rated double glazed window reducing heating bills and keeping your house warm and cozy. EVOLUTION FLUSH The Evolution Flush window offers all the benefits of the standard Evolution Storm 2 window but with a clean, flush design finish. This style represents a different design aesthetic for properties that are replacing timber flush windows or for those looking for a more modern, fuss free finish. THE DETAILS

oes your home have ageing metal windows? If so then the thought of another winter like last year is probably sending shivers down your spine already, not to mention the rising energy costs of trying to keep your home warm. Now is probably the best time to do something about it before the cold weather really hits in the New Year. The Heritage Window Company has been manufacturing and installing slimline aluminium windows for 20 years with innovative concepts to deliver unparalleled performance. The new Heritage Conservation range with its unique ultralow profile frame has been carefully developed to replicate traditional style steel windows, and provide all the benefits
mean they can be customized to almost any requirements, and the tough powder coated finish means they are virtually maintenance free. You can choose from over 200 colours – even opting for different colours inside and out to suit your home’s décor. The Heritage Window Company takes its reputation for quality products and customer service very seriously – the company employs its own team of trained craftsmen and all installations are monitored throughout the contract to ensure the highest quality standards. Proof of just how successful this formula is are the many customer testimonials which can be viewed at their showrooms, and this relentless focus on customer
Slimline aluminium replacement windows save on energy costs and preserve the appearance of your period property of double glazing, without compromising the character of a period home. Heritage Conservation windows not only offer better thermal performance – having achieved an ‘A’ performance rating and a 1.6+ U value – but satisfy all the latest building regulations for replacement or new build applications, and multipoint shootbolt locking provides extra security as well. Managing Director, Sean Ballard says: “One of the great advantages of Heritage windows is that they fit into existing timber subframes which dispenses with the need for redecoration. Should the subframes need replacing, our craftsmen can reproduce new timber frames matching the original profile.” The windows can also be fitted direct-tobrick or stone. Many customers have a specific idea of what they want, so all Heritage windows are bespoke and made to order in its London factory. satisfaction and quality product has clearly paid off. “We get people writing in every week, talking about how pleased they are with their new windows and the care and attention to detail of our fitters. In fact, a large proportion of our business comes from existing customers or referrals, which is encouraging” says Sean. As energy prices continue to rise, the cost of heating your home is only going to increase. Heritage’s energy efficient windows employ a ‘polyamide thermal resin break’ to reduce condensation and argon-filled double-glazed sealed units to ensure more of the heat stays in – helping you keep those heating bills down. ABBOTT’S
Stylish Designs and Dedication
“I
have been using Abbotts for nearly 40 years, The first thing that hits me every time I visit, is that they are always updating their showroom to not only reflect their amazing range of flooring, carpeting, shutters and blinds, but also to illustrate the latest designs and trends on the market. The staff are incredibly experienced, knowledgeable and friendly, and most importantly - available to advise and guide me as to the most suitable range for my property. With Abbott’s being a traditional family business, you get that personal service and the same fitting team each time. This makes it all the more a pleasant experience. The addition of a blind, shutter and curtain department is a master stroke. It is run by another of the Abbott team so the family connection continues. Abbott’s is definitely worth a visit; allow at least 2 hours if not 3 as you enter a world of stylish flooring and carpet displays and the most impressive blind and shutter department I have seen. This is upstairs where you get the Amtico, Karndean engineered wood, laminate display areas, and the high quality and desirable materials for your curtains; it will take your breath away.

Recently, we decided to go retro and lo and behold Abbotts came to the rescue! There were some stunning William Morris designs to choose from, but wanting to go for a quirky retro feel; Tom in the showroom was able to present their range of superb fifties and sixties designs. They really can cater for all your tastes whether traditional or modern. We chose a modern take on an old theme by using an Alternative Flooring Quirky design that looked amazing, it could not have worked out better. “For high-quality and a dedicated and experienced team that go that extra mile for you to achieve your dream interior, definitely head to Abbott’s.” MRS A MASON-PHILLIPS. WINDOWS & DOORS As smoke spread is an even greater threat to life and property than flames, particularly in the early stages of a fire, fire doors should also be fitted with a ‘cold smoke’ seal to prevent the ingress of smoke around the door edges. Combined smoke and intumescent seals protect from all aspects of fire in a single unit Some fire doors only require intumescent seals (specified as FD fire doors). Others may have to resist the the passage of smoke as well as the spread of fire (specified as FDs fire doors). PERFORMANCE GUARANTEED Fire doors are available in a range of ratings that indicate how long the product can withstand heat and flames. The minimum rating is FD30 doors that protect life and offer 30 minutes fire resistance. Higher specification FD60 doors are also available if required. SLIM LINE FIRE RESISTANCE Fireguard® 35mm doors meet the latest regulatory requirements and are compatible with most existing doorframes, making fire safety in the home more practical and inexpensive.
A BURNING ISSUE
A GUIDE TO FIRE DOORS
B
uildings are compartmentalised to delay the spread of fire from one area to another. These compartments are usually linked by fire doors to allow the flow of traffic around the building. Fire doors have two important functions in a fire; when closed they form a barrier to stop the spread of fire and when opened they provide a means of escape. A well designed timber fire door will delay the spread of fire and smoke without causing too much hindrance to the movement of people and goods. Every fire door is therefore required to act as a barrier to the passage of smoke and/or fire to varying degrees depending upon its location in a building and the fire hazards associated with that building.

FIRE RESISTING GLAZING Glazing may range from a small vision panel in a door to a glazed screen for maximum light transmission and safety. Ordinary glass cracks when exposed to heat and is liable to fall out fairly early in a fire. Fire resisting glass can withstand exposure to the heat condition in a fire test for at least 60 minutes before it reaches a temperature high enough to soften it. This is mainly because, with clear FR glazing, nearly 50 per cent of the incident heat is transmitted through the glass by radiation. The size of the glass and the method of its retention are important factors that influence its integrity. As the temperature approaches the softening point, a large sheet will tend to collapse earlier than a smaller one. On the unexposed face, beading retaining the glass is subjected to radiant and conducted heat through the glass and to convection currents at the top of the pane. This can raise the temperature sufficiently to ignite timber beading after approximately 20 minutes. To delay the ignition of beading to 30 minutes, it is necessary either to provide protection by impregnation of a surface coating or a surface covering of non-combustible material or to fit a fire resistant glass secured using a fire resistant glazing system. This will hold the glass firmly in place during normal use, but in the event of fire, allows the intumescent material to expand, thereby securing and insulating the glass and protecting the surrounding timber. For longer periods of fire protection, an improved retention system for the glazing is required. The glass panel should be small and the method of fixing must ensure that no direct path can be created for the transference of hot gases. It is imperative to fit smoke alarms in every room of your property to prevent any fire breaking out in the first place.

Desirable Homes Developed by Design
Miram House is due to launch in early 2016 and is already the talking point of Hadley Wood. Paul Artemi’s passion, desire and attention to detail are evident in every corner of Miram House. The specification, which is far too long to list, is jaw dropping; only the best of the best make it in to Miram House. Artemi & Gibbs have been successfully developing properties in London for over nine years. Priority is given to the design and construction of all their developments, creating the kind of home we all aspire to live in. Homes that are thoughtful in design, friendly to the environment and built by craftsmen with modern skills and traditional values. Both Paul Artemi and Stephen Gibbs work ‘hands on’ in the business and many of their skilled team have been with them for many years.
They do not sub-contract to third party construction companies and they personally manage each one of their developments from the initial design right through to the handover at completion Unlike many other developers, Artemi & Gibbs are also the builders. They do not sub-contract to third party construction companies and they personally manage each one of their developments from the initial design right through to the handover at completion. This approach ensures they are in full control of every detail of the build, for their peace of mind and yours.

rtemi & Gibbs were awarded Best Residential Development (Hertfordshire) for Miram House, at the 2015-2016 UK Property Awards held at the London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square, Mayfair on the 9th October. Nick Staton and Jenna Dooley of Statons joined Paul Artemi and Stephen Gibbs to help celebrate their success. The developers have always known their development is a cut above the rest, so it was a real honour to be awarded such an accolade to affirm what they already knew. Miram House (Miram from the Latin word for amazing) is a development of six stunning and spacious apartments in Hadley Wood. With bespoke floor-to-ceiling doors, elegantly designed interiors and Hadley Wood’s golf course as its backdrop, these apartments are luxury personified.
