OUT & ABOUT
WINTER IS HERE! D
uring the winter months, a significant percentage of home insurance claims are the result of damage caused by severe weather - usually through frozen or burst pipes, storms and falling trees. Natasha Sadler, Insurance Executive at Scrutton Bland, suggests some things that you should be doing to protect your home in winter. Practical action Firstly, you can minimise the chances of damage from burst water pipes by checking that any pipes near unheated areas of your property are insulated. Pipes under the kitchen sinks and near to windows are also more prone to freezing. Make sure you walk round outside your property and visually check for vulnerable spots such as loose or missing tiles, which if left unattended will allow the rain to penetrate and cause damp, rot and, in the worst case scenario, flooding. Doing these checks on a regular basis and taking preventative action will reduce the likelihood of damage when the weather deteriorates. Greater peace of mind Some of the insurance companies Scrutton Bland work with can recommend leak detection and water shut-off systems which will monitor your water supply when you are away, and turn off your water valve if too much water is being used. If the worst has happened and a pipe has burst: • Switch off the water supply at the mains stopcock. • Turn on all the cold water taps and flush the toilets to drain the water away.
1 0 JANUARY 2018
• Don’t turn on the hot taps as this may cause more problems. • Turn off the central heating system. • Move any items such as furniture which are in the path of the burst pipe. When you’re away Going away for a short break? Leave your central heating on at a low level (about 5°C), and if you are going away for more than a few days then open the attic hatch to keep the roof space from falling below freezing point. And please don’t ‘check in’ on your public Facebook or social media page, as that only advertises to burglars that your house is empty! Now is also the time to check your locks on sheds and gates, and make sure your fencing is secure. Opportunist thieves often target garden equipment such as ride-on mowers, so make sure your shed is weather and burglar-proof. Good locks undoubtedly deter theft, and most insurers will insist on them in order to provide cover. If you have electric gates then now is the time to service them – don’t wait until they stop working on a day when it’s really cold and raining! Scrutton Bland’s insurance advisers are experienced in assessing exclusive properties and recommending appropriate insurance cover. We provide a discreet and confidential service, and would be pleased to discuss your needs at a time suitable for you. Furthermore we work alongside our tax, accountancy and independent financial advisers who we can call on to help you with other areas of financial advice you may need. n

TRAILS, WINTER AND WALKING IN EPPING 1 2 JANUARY 2018

on’t let the bleakness of midwinter stop you from getting out and exploring Epping Forest this January. e City of London Corporation, which manages Epping Forest, has recently finalised the very last stage of the Heritage Lottery Funded Branching Out project, with the installation of new orientation panels and way markers around the Forest. ese panels and way markers will help visitors to explore new parts of the ancient woodland. If you are looking to discover somewhere new in Epping Forest, why not try following one of the waymarked trails? Visit www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/eppingforestsports to find out more about the nine trails throughout the Forest – they are located right across Epping Forest, from the Gifford Wood Trail in Upshire, in the north, to the two Trails, Chestnut and Lime, in Wanstead Park and Wanstead Flats respectively. ere’s always something new to discover and different to see in Epping Forest, whatever the season. January is the perfect month for doing a spot of bird watching at Connaught Water (on e Willow Trail), where you may be lucky enough to see some of the migratory species, such as pintail, tufted duck, goosander, teal, smew, mandarin duck or shoveler. e Holly Trail in Chingford passes close to the new, aptly named café, e Holly Trail Café, located in the Chingford Golf Centre on Bury Road. is welcoming establishment provides the perfect opportunity to warm up and enjoy some very tasty refreshments. Another advantage of winter walking is the opportunity to see animal tracks and footprints. e muddy or even snowy ground conditions being perfect for leaving useful, little clues of what woodland creatures may have been venturing out before you. So don’t let the colder temperatures keep you indoors – get out there and enjoy the bracing fresh air of a winter walk. And if you need somewhere to warm up again, or indeed some inspiration before you venture out, take a visit to the free art exhibition at e View, Rangers Road, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am – 5pm, to see ‘Winter printer and painter’, a collection of work from local artists reflecting the mood of the season. For a little more woodland inspired art this winter, join an event on Wednesday 24 January, 1.30-3pm, where an experienced community Arts Lecturer will help you to create wonderful woodland prints. Budget & forecast: Write down what you earn and where that’s being spent. Understanding your income and expenditure is the foundation of keeping your money on track. 2. Save regularly: Putting a sum away each month is a disciplined way of building your wealth for the short, medium and longer term. 3. Chances are you are better off clearing debts sooner rather than later. 4. Be tax savvy: there are various allowances available to most of us that help reduce our annual tax bill. Here is a summary of some of them available in tax year 2017/18 i) ISAs: Shelter up to £20,000 ii) Pensions: contribute up to the greater of £40,000 or 100% of your earnings and potentially

B
raeside in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton make up the privately-owned Oak-Tree Group of Schools. All four schools have well-established and popular Kindergartens, catering for children from 2½ years. We talk to Matthew Hagger, Group Principal of e Oak-Tree Schools, about the four excellent Kindergartens. Q: What are the benefits of the Oak-Tree Schools taking children so young? A: As many children have been with us since 2½ or 3 years old, we can provide continuity in their education in familiar surroundings by staff who know them well. e progression from each stage to the next is well supported to ensure that the pupils’ education is continually enhanced. Q: What are the benefits of attending the Oak-Tree Kindergartens rather than a local nursery? A: Despite their young ages, the emphasis in our Kindergartens is on the children’s learning. e curriculum is based around the Early Learning Goals, but is enriched with a wide range of additional activities including Music, Computing and PE lessons; French and Drama workshops; assemblies, performances, trips and outings. Being attached to schools we have many subject specialists at our disposal. Our children have excellent relationships with their dedicated keyworkers, who are responsible for monitoring their progress and development. Observations are made electronically and evidence is emailed home regularly. e children often exceed their expected levels of progress. All four schools provide happy and secure environments in which to learn, with a generous provision of space, large classrooms and dedicated

outside learning areas that allow for ‘free flow’ to encourage creativity. Q: What positive feedback have you had recently about the individual schools? A: At Braeside the Kindergarten children now benefit from a spacious new area that has been doubled in size as part of a recent extensive programme of improvements. e dedicated new outside area enables learning to take place effectively both inside and outside the classroom. ese developments have seen the Kindergarten double in size from this Spring Term. Coopersale Hall’s Kindergartens have purpose-built large classrooms and extensive grounds with play equipment for the younger children. As with all Oak-Tree Schools, the wrap-around care is very popular with parents looking to balance work and children’s school lives. Breakfast Club runs from 7.30am each morning and the Teatime Club runs until 6pm. At Normanhurst the Kindergarten areas were recently redeveloped to create dedicated areas for the younger children. Feedback has been excellent about children continuing their educational journey from Kindergarten up through the school to age 16, as staff and pupils at all levels have outstanding relationships that help with the children’s personal development. Current and prospective parents at Oaklands have been positive about the forthcoming Kindergarten developments. e new flexible sessions in Kindergarten have been very appealing to parents of the youngest children and have allowed for more choice. e Kindergartens are due to be expanded slightly from September 2018 and the school is preparing to offer more places to local families. For more information visit www.oaktreeschools.co.uk n

SIX
STEPS TO S UC C E S S
A
s we go into 2018, it is worth reviewing aspirations, goals and most importantly, how we will make it work. It’s always recommended to go back to basics when reviewing a strategic plan for long-term success.
potential clients know you’re still in business if they stop hearing about you or seeing your promotions? As the economy becomes stronger, it is important to have your business strategy in place before competitors resume their campaigns.
STEP 1 - GOALS Write down your goals. What you would like to achieve in the next six months, twelve months and three years? Seeing these ambitions on paper (or screen) sets an immediate focus on what needs to be done in order to achieve the desired result. Imagine how your lifestyle and family could benefit from an improved business success… Now work backwards – what are the milestones you need to achieve along the way? At what point should you be in three months, six months, one year? It doesn’t just happen, there has to be a plan, a process and successes en route.
STEP 4 – CAMPAIGN Strategize your campaign and steer it from the clients’ perspective – not yours. Consider how you can use testimonials i.e. such as on LinkedIn and on your website to promote the benefits enjoyed by your clients as a result of your services or products.
STEP 2 – YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE Now STOP. Look at your goals again and consider the viewpoint from your target audience. WHY SHOULD THEY USE YOU? Adapt Step 1 so it appeals to your target audience and with respect to what they want – not what you are selling. What is your USP and are your target audience aware of how THEY could BENEFIT by using YOU? STEP 3 – BUDGET Ascertain the appropriate budget and wherever possible, maximise FREE opportunities such as social media. During recession or difficult economic climates, many companies cut back on advertising and marketing. Some company owners erroneously believe it’s a good idea to slash this budget as a priority – BUT – how can
1 8 JANUARY 2018
STEP 5 – MARKETING TOOLS List your current marketing tools, i.e. website, brochures, leaflets, etc. Websites need to be fresh, interesting and regularly updated. Keep potential customers returning to your website as either a point of interest or to buy. Websites can easily become stale and passé. Your website (which should be graphic responsive) reflects the calibre of your services/products and company. Also the viewer’s attention span is normally short, most people subconsciously decide within just three seconds whether to stay and continue reading or to look elsewhere. at forefinger on the right-hand side of the mouse can be twitchy!.. STEP 6 – THE TEAM Consider the best team to work alongside you to help improve your sales, profitability and corporate visibility so that companies think of you and when needing your products or services. e team at Star Copywriting Limited strategically help their clients to maximise business opportunities. n

ssex is a wonderfully exciting county with so much history, cultural places of interest, stately homes and even beaches. Whether Audley House, Colchester Zoo and Castle, Hyde Hall, Mersea Island or even the internationally respected jam manufacturer, Tiptree. eir museum is interesting and gives a detailed history on the development of the factory and the people that worked there. Plus of course the tea room has a wonderful array of light snacks, afternoon teas and the Tiptree shop. All the jams, relishes, biscuits and even delicious puds. In keeping with the theme of Essex - Visit Essex is pleased to announce that their second Essex Big Weekend will take place over the weekend of 24th and 25th March and at the end of English Tourism Week. ere will be a public ballot open to all Essex residents from 5th February for five weeks, where bids can be made for FREE entry to over 50 tourism attractions throughout the county. is year’s event attracted 86,000 bids, and nearly 7,000 residents took advantage of FREE entry to 49 businesses. If a business already has free admission, then another prize will be available such as a ‘backstage tour’ or special gift. With so much to see and enjoy in Essex, marketing and PR managers are constantly reviewing what is available and how to encourage residents to visit places of interest and to talk positively about their experiences and to encourage others to also visit. Especially in the spring and summer, it is worth making a note of key events and making plans to visit with the family or with friends. e aim of the campaign is to get residents going to attractions which they may not have

AUGUST THOUGHTS August is one of my favourite months – WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
A
ugust is a wonderfully relaxing month. Savouring the sunshine (where’s the heatwave?) and just letting go of all the stresses and strains that are for most of us, the daily grind. These precious six (or is it eight now?) weeks feel like an infinite amount of time until that fateful day when you suddenly notice, Back to School deals and realise that the summer has ended or at the very least, the school holidays. Today is a beautiful sunny day and I’m sitting in the garden with my iPad. The sky’s blue, a comforting breeze and I can hear birds chirping. Holidays are sometimes deemed as an unnecessary expense but my theory is we all need an annual service. If our boilers and cars merit a check-up, surely with all the strains and stresses that most adults endure as part of the daily grind, we should all allow one or two weeks to just unwind, recharge and top up those depleted batteries. Just turning everything down or preferably off as we ease into the slow lane… Life’s so fast and busy with so many demands from simultaneous and multiple sources. Recently and whilst en route to Waitrose in South Woodford for some essentials, I noticed that I had forgotten my mobile. I went back to get it despite not planning to
August’s Column – August oughts is feature was about the importance of family, friends and knowing when to turn off your mobile phone. is device has indeed become like a third hand or permanent glove. Always either in our palms or nearby, ready to be quickly picked-up and is constantly monitored. One of my colleagues (a DJ) commented that at parties, youngsters are all standing together in their respective groups but everybody is simultaneously on the phone. Probably even sending each other messages on Facebook… When did society need to engage more people on a virtual basis than those within close proximity? I like this column because it provokes a lifestyle change. One which I think we all need to consider plus our insatiable need to be constantly accessible. Is it really necessary? I don’t think so – we need to invest our time with people who are close, important and who we genuinely love.
be more than an hour away from my desk. Upon reflection, it’s incredibly sad that we all feel so compelled to be constantly reachable and now via a phone call, Facetime, Skype, WhatsApp or email… Even social media such as Facebook or Instagram takes its toll and is demanding. This experience made me evaluate how we’ve so quickly and easily, sunk into a constant state of accessibility. My phone rings as I write (which I ignore) but normally, August is one of the quietest times of the year and a great opportunity to address lifestyle issues. What’s important and what’s superfluous. It’s all about a stocktake; taking some time out to cut off from the schedules and routine which turn days into months, then years into decades… August is one of my favourite months – most people are generally lifted as they’re about to embark or just returned from an annual holiday. Memories are made and treasured. These breaks punctuate our lives with milestones from holiday experiences, plus it’s important time with family and friends. So if you can - remember to turn off the phone! n
Happy Summer Holidays!
We should all allow one or two weeks to just unwind, recharge and top up those depleted batteries.

OUT & ABOUT
NEW BEGINNINGS IN 2018 WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
I
s this going to be the year when New Resolutions are made and kept? It’s always worth starting off optimistic… or at least until end of January. Healthy eating, joining the local gym and quitting smoking… For readers venturing into a new fitness regime, we are spoilt for choice in all our Essex areas for access to a great gym. However my preference is for Zumba; dancing off the billions of calories consumed at Christmas/Chanukah. Fun on your own, within a class or even with a group of friends - Zumba is more like a party than exercise. And as you continue to be inspired, a little potter around the healthy food aisles at local supermarkets rather than popping in a chocolate bar (or bars) so near the tills in most shops. Perhaps a switch to herbal tea or (not too sugary) fruit juice, instead of coffee to reduce your caffeine intake… We’re all busy, shuffling unrelenting timelines, responsibilities and duties, however we can only really help others if we’re in a good place too. Which brings me to ‘ME’ time. It sounds selfish and others around you with their desperate needs may not always appreciate the importance of your own agenda – however – ME time is crucial. With whatever it might be such as a sauna, health and beauty treatment, a slow comfortable walk

down one of our beautiful high roads or just enjoying the fresh air in Epping Forest, we all need to recharge. ink of your phone – unless charged, very quickly goes flat! Personally, I know that my best business and personal decisions are generally made when cutting off from everything else. It all feels clearer and makes more sense when removed from the daily grind, rut or routine. And especially after the Christmas rush when you have barely had time to think and resort to auto-pilot when organising everything from pressies and food to house, guests and entertaining. So after the festive rush, it’s time to take a deep breath and plan for success (whether personal or professional) in 2018 and with important milestones along the way, just to keep you on track. n
Wishing all the readers of the Essex series of Fish Media magazines A healthy, fit, vibrant and Happy 2018!
It’s time to take a deep breath and plan for success...

SOUTh AFRICA ExPERIENCE ThE GARdEN ROUTE
One of our most popular multi-centre destinations is South Africa. Our experienced reservations team will tell you no two trips we plan are every the same. All our clients necessities vary; we listen ,advise and tailor make their bespoke holiday. Whether self-drive or escorted tour South Africa is a diverse country and has something for everyone to enjoy. We have put together a rough guide of the popular Garden Route to give you some idea of what you can experience whilst you are away. Please do pop into our local high street shop and speak to us for further details. The Garden Route, Western Cape is South Africa's most famous stretch of lush coastline. Home to the region's best beaches, mountains and forests all neatly packaged together. The Cape offers something for everyone an irresistible combination of accommodating landscape Californian beaches, Swiss mountains and French vineyards. For wildlife fans, this is the perfect stretch of coastline from which to spot whales, seals and white sharks, to go on long, coastal walks and also to visit its famous game reserves, many of which offer elegant, colonial-style accommodation all at reasonable prices. WHAT TO SEE HERMANUS - Ninety minutes' drive south-east of Cape Town lies Hermanus, once a poor fishing village, now the whale-watching capital of South Africa. July to November, southern right whales wallow in Walker Bay, where they are watched by admirers on the coastal path high above the rocky shoreline. KNYSNA VILLAGE - Knysna old town itself - with its wide, tree-lined streets and Victorian houses - has been preserved, and most tourists find themselves on Knysna Quays, a purpose-built waterfront complex with clothes and crafts shops, galleries, bars and restaurants. From here you pick up the N2 motorway taking you to Plettenburg and along the Garden Route. BEACHES AROUND KNYSNA - The best options are Buffalo Bay, Wilderness and Victoria Bay. Buffalo Bay has a dune-backed beach interrupted by a headland dotted with hand painted holiday chalets. Brenton-on-Sea is busy with large families under umbrellas with a few amenities; but the other side is a gorgeous, empty stretch of golden sand that borders the Goukamma Nature Reserve. Wilderness has a
good swimming beach and Victoria Bay has a small sandy beach wedged between cliffs and backed by lawns.. PLETTENBERG BAY - It's roughly a 30-minute drive from Noetzie to Plettenberg Bay, known as 'Plett' to everyone. Like the view, Plett town hasn't changed much: Lookout Beach is still the best for surfing and sunbathing, and is the least crowded. The surrounding countryside and coastline are still among the most beautiful in the world WHAT TO DO Hiking at Robberg Nature Reserve, an imposing peninsula 8km south of Plettenberg Bay takes about four hours to circumnavigate, along narrow cliff-top paths down to the base there are colonies of Cape fur seals and dolphins and whales swim close to shore. Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park, which consists of 80km of coastline, forests and mountains beginning at Nature's Valley. Home to famous five-day Otter Trail, named after the clawless Cape otter. Nature's Valley itself is a peaceful place to disappear for a day, with a 5km beach and a quiet lagoon at the mouth of the Groot River GAME RESERVES GORAH ELEPHANT CAMP is a private concession within state-owned Addo Elephant Park . Originally created in 1931 with the last 11 elephants in the Eastern Cape and now has a population in excess of 350. KWANDWE PRIVATE GAME RESERVE - Kwandwe Private Game Reserve opened in the Great Fish River Valley The land was left to revert to its natural state and animals including buffalo, lion, cheetah, rhino and elephant, were introduced to their new home in a massive translocation exercise. OTHER ACTIVITIES Just about every outdoor activity is catered for on the Garden Route, from golf to kayaking, mountain biking to horse riding, canoeing to bungy jumping, motor glider flights and rides on the Outenique Choo Choo steam train between George and Knysna. In addition, there are hikes and nature walks in the various nature reserves, plus whaleand white-shark-watching. n Why not pop in and see us

ecurrent sore throat due to tonsillitis can affect both children and adults. It can be associated with temperature, neck lumps, painful swallow, rash, and headache. Frequent stone formation in the tonsil can lead to tonsillitis as well as bad breath. Enlarged tonsils can lead to sleep apnea and can affect the quality of sleep your child. If unfortunately, these symptoms become persistent and start to affect school attendance and work then, in consultation with Ear Nose roat surgeon you may be advised having Tonsillectomy done. Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove tonsils.
Now there is an alternative way to do Tonsillectomy? ere are several ways to perform a tonsillectomy. Electrosurgery uses electrical energy to remove the tonsils. is electrical energy generates very high heat to rupture cells and vaporize tonsil tissue. is sometimes causes significant damage such as burning and charring at the surgical site. Mr Kumar can discuss both methods with you as he has been performing tonsillectomy on both adult and children for last 20 years. n

I am looking forward to see how government regulations within the beauty and aesthetic arena will be improved. We need tighter regulations and a proper register to ensure public safety. When treatments are carried out by suitability qualified practitioners they can give great results. But in my own practise I am getting increasingly more requests to help rectify complications resulting in injectables as well as people injecting their own faces at home, scary stuff! Asymmetry, whether this is to do with imbalances of the face, different shape eyebrows or scarring to one side of the face it can make a person feel self conscious. As humans we are drawn and attracted to well balanced faces. Subtle enhancements to rectify volume loss in the face with dermal fillers, semi permanent make up to even out eyebrows or derma pen needling to lessen the appearance of all types of scarring can help a persons confidence. WHY DO TEETH WEAR AWAY ?
P
eople are living longer these days. With advancements in healthcare such as toothpastes containing fluoride and better oral hygiene, teeth are lasting longer. However, as people get older, teeth wear away, and this can lead to problems.
Acid can also ERODE teeth away. Food and drinks that cause damage to the enamel include citric fruits, fruit juices, fizzy drinks, and excessive alcohol. Conditions such as anorexia, gastro-oesophageal reflux and pregnancy vomiting can also take their toll on teeth.
Why do teeth wear away?
What is the best treatment for worn teeth?
Teeth are covered by a very strong, protective outer layer called enamel. is enamel can be damaged in one of two ways: attrition (which is when teeth grind against each other) or erosion (which is when acid damages or erodes the enamel away). Once the inner layer called dentine is exposed, the teeth wear away much faster as dentine is a lot softer than enamel. A useful analogy is to compare enamel to granite and dentine to chalk.
Who is more at risk from wearing teeth down? People who clench or grind their teeth (especially at night whilst sleeping) place excessive forces on their teeth. is can lead to extra stresses on the teeth and fillings, resulting in cracks in the teeth and also chipping away of the outer enamel layer. is has a net result of shortening the teeth, which makes them less attractive and more sensitive.
Teeth that have been damaged by grinding and acid, require comprehensive dentistry to restore the teeth to how they were. Crowns and porcelain veneers are sometimes used to improve the appearance, health and function of the teeth. White fillings can also be a suitable, more cost-effective alternative. e earlier the treatment is carried out, the better the long-term results. For people that grind their teeth, it is important to provide a protective mouth guard made from plastic, which should be worn at night.
Where is the best place to start? Without a doubt – having a comprehensive dental assessment, which includes photographs, X-rays, impressions for making duplicate models of your teeth, etc. We offer one of the most comprehensive assessments in the UK. n

I was really excited when my fiancé and I decided to get married abroad, however the thought of being on holiday with lots of family and friends was making me feel concerned. I have always been a slim lady, gone to the gym regularly and tried to eat a balanced diet most of the time. So the fact that I have suffered from unsightly cellulite and localised fat above my knees has always been frustrating for me. It has stopped me wearing shorts, skirts and dresses as I have been self conscious. After being referred to Frances furlong of perfect skin by a good friend, she has been able to transform my legs and has increased my confidence no end. I am now more than happy for my legs to be seen on the beach! LW Suffolk

irstly I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year! New years resolutions are one of the biggest promises we make ourselves in January. ese include detoxing after the festive season, burning off some of those extra calories we had over the last few weeks, or just to improve our general wellbeing. WHAT IS HYPOXI ?
H
YPOXI® is completely non invasive, targeted body reshaping, developed by sport scientist Dr Norbert Egger in Salzburg. Dr Egger, noticed that stubborn fat deposits in poorly circulated areas were resistant to diet and exercise. e solution was to activate the burning of fatty acids by increasing blood circulation in problematic areas. HYPOXI® technology stimulates the circulation into the problem areas and improve the metabolism. HYPOXI® equipment will target specific areas: stomach, hips, buttocks, and thighs.
How HYPOXI® works and the results that are typically achieved. HYPOXI® works by getting you to gently exercise to optimise blood flow to allow the unique changes in pressure at optimum intervals to improve the circulation in fatty areas enabling targeted fat burn. Typically with 6 weeks of HYPOXI® training, you could lose a comfortable dress size / couple of trouser sizes, shedding 3-6kg of FAT, predominantly from those stubborn hard to get rid of areas of stomach, buttocks, hips and thighs. ere are also improvements in skin tone, and overall feeling of health and wellbeing. In addition to the targeted fat burn machines, HYPOXI® offer the dermology bed, which is amazing for skin tone, and delivers remarkable changes to cellulite and improvements in connective tissue. ere is no risk to saggy skin, losing weight with HYPOXI®. e HDC (dermology bed) operates a similar principle to cupping massage. With 400 active pressure chambers strategically placed within the HD-Pressure suit (similar to a masseuse's 2 cups), it is exercising the skin.
Following 30 minutes of gentle exercise on one of 3 different types of targeted fat burn machines, the HYPOXI®-Coach will be confident through ongoing monitoring that you have had an effective treatment and will be metabolising fats in the target areas for the next 6-8 hours. During HYPOXI® training, your heart rates are monitored and training modified 4 6 JANUARY 2018
if necessary, and for the pear shapes ladies the additional measure of a temperature increase in the thigh. Temperature in the thigh would normally drop during conventional exercise but with 30 minutes of HYPOXI®-Training our pear shaped ladies see an increase of between 3-8 degrees in their thigh, demonstrating a successful targeted fat burn session. Conventional training or diets have practically no effect on female figure types due to their unevenly distributed circulatory system and the restricted metabolism. HYPOXI® training will quickly and effectively reduce these targeted areas. With 6 weeks of HYPOXI® on the S120/L250 machines, we see on average an 8cm reduction in a single stomach measurement, and 5 cm reduction in a single thigh measurement (figures concluded from a study of 100 HYPOXI® South Woodford clients 2011-2015). For the apple shaped ladies and gentlemen, the waist nips in, the stomach reduces, and the love handles diminish achieving an all round balanced body change on the targeted areas HYPOXI®'s vacunaut machine provides the pressure changes through a unique suit to the tummy area, whilst simply walking on a treadmill and keeping the heart rate below a certain level. On average in 6 weeks, clients will lose 8cm from a single measure of the tummy Academic studies, as well as practice, show HYPOXI® to be 3-5 times more effective in terms of circumference loss versus conventional diet and exercise for the same amount of weight loss. MEN’S PERFECT ABS Are you taking your belly on holidays oor you’re leaving it at home? The Vacunaut® and PressureSuit
TARGETED FIGURE SHAPING WITH THE HYPOXI-METHOD® A beautiful figure cannot always be achieved through exercise and intense diet. This is because your body only burns fat which it can easily access. It will not burn fat in areas where circulation is poor. Diet and exercise do not always combat cellulite either. It is established that weight loss and muscle building do not necessarily improve the texture or your skin. In order to shape your figure and smooth your skin, problematic areas of your body need to be targeted. This is exactly how HYPOXI-Method® works -
The Vacunaut® and PressureSuit are an effective combination for treating common problem areas such as the stomach and hips. The Vacunaut® technical unit produces alternating high and low pressure. Connected to the unit through a series of pressure conducting hoses is the PressureSuit. The PressureSuit comprises of a network of active pressure chambers which apply calculated high and low pressure on the stomach and hips. Simultaneous fat-burning training can be undertaken on a treadmill.
The perfect fit: V Vacunaut ® - PressureSuit
it concentrates on your problem areas during an easy cardio training program. Targeted metabolic stimulation and a healthy diet are the key factors to achieving your right body proportions and desired figure. HYPOXI-Method® has been proven to yield amazing results just after a few sessions.

Journalist Jake, from renowned magazine Gay UK, writes a delightful article on his positive experience at Hypoxi South Woodford. “I popped into the South Woodford branch where the ultra friendly Sylwia and her team greeted me. Essentially, you step into a suit, take a 30 - minute walk and lose weight without trying. Sounds too good to be true, but within just 6 sessions I could tell it was working. The next morning after my first session I woke to find I actually felt thinner. Around 125 compression cups suck and massage at your abdomen, lower stomach and love handles - all those problematic areas which tend to be the most difficult areas to shift fat from. It’s well worth considering if you, like me, have tried and failed at losing those last few pounds.”

talk to a lot of patient's who are unhappy with their nose, it’s such an important feature of the face as it’s one of the first things people notice when they look at another person. For many patient’s the shape of their nose has impacted their confidence for many years. ere are a number of reasons patient’s seek advice regarding their nose, these can include: - Nasal hump - Nasal hook - Nasal tip droop - Asymmetry - Crooked nose - Flat bridged nose - Small nose For patient's who are considering enhancement of their nose, there are two options available, the traditional surgical rhinoplasty and the non-surgical rhinoplasty. For patients that are not keen on surgery, the non-surgical option is an excellent alternative. I perform the simple procedure using my chosen premium dermal filler that can last up to 24 months. e procedure takes only 15 minutes, hence the 15 minute nose job! With minimal pain and no down time, most patients go straight back to work or continue with their daily activities. ere is usually no bruising and patients can see the difference instantly. e price is more affordable than surgery too, which is always an important factor. e patient I treated here was very conscious of her dorsal hump and drooping nasal tip, which had affected her confidence for many years. Using dermal filler I was able to smooth out the bump, resulting in a smoother appearance as well as rotating the tip of her nose upwards as requested. She was extremely pleased with the results and felt an instant boost in her confidence.

CHOOSING A NEW SOFA WORDS: GABRIELLE FAGAN
B
uying a new settee can be stressful. Three experts share their top tips and trends to plump for. Over the course of a sofa’s life (which lasts, on average, 11 years) it will witness 1,236 arguments, 2,105 kissing couples, 3,135 films watched by families, and overhear 2,631 phone conversations, according to new research for Furniture Village. So, it’s all the more important then, to choose a sofa that doesn’t just look good and fit in, but can withstand all that activity and emotion. Experts reveal their buying secrets to help you choose the best seat in the house...
‘Green and orange are the hottest sofa colours right now’ “We’re always keeping abreast of trends and this year, in Italy, at Salone del Mobile - which showcases the latest in furniture and design from around the world - we saw two colours dominate - burnt orange
and forest green,” says Alison Hill, creative director at DFS. Forest green reflects our desire to bring the ‘outside in’ and orange is a complementary colour to green. Curved-back ‘cocooning’ furniture is increasingly popular, too. We’ve really seen craftsmanship trending in recent years - highlighted in detail on upholstery and frames. Raising furniture forms on plinths - another popular look - provides a sense of continuous space in a room, and is an advantage if you’re constrained for space. All cushions are not created equal - some people like a firm and supportive feel, while others want something soft and squishy to sink into. We have fibre filling for a soft feel; a foam core for balanced softness, and support and foam for a supportive, slightly springy feel. An extra set of loose covers are available to buy with our sofas, too.” Alison’s favourite sofa... “The Fliss is country-style meets urban living, with its sweeping curved arms and stunning turned legs. I love the pink and plum colour combination.”

sofa will work wonders. A large corner unit may be a good option to consider, as this offers flexible seating solutions, as well as adding structure to open-plan spaces. If you’re working with a more compact room, consider a raised sofa with smaller proportions and slender tapered legs, which will help create the illusion of space and light.” Malcolm’s favourite sofa... “The Nicoletti Movimento Recliner Corner Chaise is my top pick, as its deep, luxurious foamfilled seats and optional touch sensitive power recliner function make this a stylish and superbly comfortable choice,” says Malcolm.
‘Big families should opt for a statement sofa’ “A sofa’s one of the most used and best-loved pieces of furniture in our home,” says Malcolm Walker, director of product at Furniture Village. “Far from just being a place to sit, it can be the centre of many pivotal moments in family life whether it’s arguments and the subsequent making up, or a power nap after a long day. But the sheer amount of time that we spend on a sofa, along with the number of activities that we do while lounging on it can mean it needs to stand up to a lot of wear and tear - particularly if you have children. As the seasons shift from summer to autumn, we have seen the re-emergence of earthy hues and tactile finishes. Worn leathers and raw materials pair together to create a rustic decor, perfect for those looking to achieve a sense of warmth and comfort,” says Malcolm. Velvet continues to enjoy a renaissance around this time of year, with jewel tones and brass finishes accompanying this textile, to introduce a sense of sophisticated luxury to any scheme. The two key concepts to take into account when choosing a sofa are the space you are working with and your own personal style. A sofa will naturally become the focal point in any space, so ensuring that it captures the look you want is essential,” says Malcolm. If your home caters for a big family, then a statement
‘Check the basics’
“Check a room is not only large enough for the size of the sofa, but also that its proportions are right”
“We’re fans of sofas that are big enough to lounge around on, look good and most importantly are super-comfy,” says Charlie Marshall, founder of Loaf. “People are becoming more adventurous with colour in their homes, as sites like Pinterest are providing people with inspiration, making it easier for them to get bolder colours right. Our new fabric collection for 2018 is full of vibrant hues, including Carnival (a red/pink coral hue), Maize Yellow, Clean Green and Deep Blue Lido, in velvets and linens. We recently updated our Souffle Sofa as a modular design, and each unit can be customised in a different fabric and colour for a statement look, or in one fabric for a classic look.” Check a sofa has a solid beech frame, held together with screws and dowels, rather than glued and stapled chipboard versions, which aren’t as durable and break easily If you have your very own team of ‘stain spreaders’ (young children and pets) removable covers are a good choice, as they can be easily whipped off for cleaning,” advises Charlie. Always measure up before buying. Check a room is not only large enough for the size of the sofa, but also that its proportions are right. High-back sofas can be overpowering in a smaller room with a low ceiling. Fitting a new sofa through narrow doorways can be tricky - ask for access advice - bolt-on arms can be a great solution.” Charlie’s favourite sofa... “The Pudding Sofa is a fresh take on a classic design and it has a super-deep comfy seat. It looks great in our classic linens and neutral fabrics, as much as it does in our bolder choices, such as Burnt Orange velvet.”

After all, this is the place where we start and finish our day. We spend a third of our lives in bed so it deserves special attention. champagne hues, subtle pinks, purples and plums. Combine textures such as satin, velvet and faux fur, key to creating a luxurious, romantic feel. For a contemporary vibe, dress a bed with white bed linen and a velvet throw, and add an eclectic mix of cushions. In any style of bedroom, the bed should always take centre stage. For a more feminine interpretation, add art deco-style mirrored furniture and on-trend metallic accents, lamps and accessories.” Tip: For smaller rooms, avoid heavy patterns and dark colours, as they’ll look too busy, while at the other end of the scale, larger rooms shouldn’t be too minimalist, as they can look cold.
Hotel style “A boutique hotel-style bedroom is a hugely popular choice and this crisp, smart look appeals particularly to couples who want a style that suits both their tastes, and is neither overtly feminine nor macho,” says Samantha. “Colour is key in creating a haven of rest, so look at palettes you’re both drawn to. If you can’t agree on which shade, opt for something pale - like a soft grey or off-white hue - that provides a neutral backdrop. Enhance the mood and ambience with carefully considered lighting, such as task lighting for bedtime reading on either side of the bed. We offer Zip & Link beds, (£1,722 for Zip & Link mattress; £2,289 for Zip & Link mattress and bed set), ideal for couples who have different preferences. This type of bed is made up of two mattresses with different comfort levels, which can be used together or separated into two singles.”
Tip: Dare to go for a paler carpet, as this is normally a ‘low-traffic’ area and hopefully, where people don’t wear shoes. Neutrals or greys will work with most schemes, and carpet is warmer underfoot.
Boudoir on a budget “Autumn’s the perfect time to put a stylish twist on your bedroom’s design. For a simple and easy way to rejuvenate the look of your space, consider changing a headboard,” suggests Samantha. “A tall, winged headboard gives a room the ‘wow’ factor and completely transforms its aesthetic into something sophisticated and special. Or opt for a simple metal or wooden one, if you don’t want the bed to dominate. Dress a bed with throws and cushions in a new colour scheme - deep blues, teal and indigo are in fashion. This colour could be used to paint a feature wall behind the bed, or take the shade over the walls and ceiling for a cosy, cosseting feel. Even a basic makeover can make a difference. Focus on decluttering and tidying surfaces - too many visual distractions can make it hard to relax and sleep. Change bedside lamps or just replace drawer handles and curtain ties with more decorative items. All these can make a surprising difference to the room’s atmosphere and appeal, and all for a minimal cost.” Accessorise your bed with Furniture Village’s Velour Cushions, £39 each, and a Cera Mustard Table Lamp, £119. Tip: If you’re space-starved, consider fitted furniture, which can create up to three times more storage space than freestanding pieces, as it can be tailored to precisely fit the room. emerge. We are all products of our environment, yet we don’t realise the stiflin l ng inflluence a poorly planned home can have on uus. One man who set to breakk with convention was the Japanese sculptor, Issamu Noguchi. His eponymous Noguchi Coffee Table was designed in 1947 and eschewed tradition nal templates of what a modern table should be. Insttead of the predicable four legs he created a mesmerising erising sculpted base with a freefor m glass top. It has since gone on to become an icon of 20th centtury design, gifting style and sinuosity to homes all over the world. He proved that revitalizing your home with gorgeous design isn’t just about aestheetics. alls - like presents - look their best when well-wrapped. And there’s now a huge choice of wallpapers out there, so they can shimmer, sparkle or stun with texture, pattern and colour. Papering a single feature wall, or a whole room, is also a ‘fast’ way to embrace a trend. After all, we’re increasingly following home fashion just as closely we do clothes - and a winning combination of cutting-edge digital technology and brilliant designs makes it possible to literally transform a setting with just a roll of paper. Here, two experts in the field reveal their wallpaper wisdom and trend predictions for the year ahead...
Create drama and personality “Wallpaper has observed tradition for too long and people are starting to acknowledge its potential in their homes,” says Catherine Jacob, head of design at Murals Wallpaper, who offers a range of designs and can create bespoke wall murals from images, designs or photographs supplied by customers. “Platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram inspire people and help empower them to experiment, while the rise in personalisation means 8 E CNEU MA BR EY R 22 001178 5 48 DJ A
people are enjoying creating unique designs for their walls. “Generally, patterns are becoming more daring, with large-scale dark florals, jungle prints and bright coloured geometrics enlivening the landscape of walls once dominated by a conventional neutral palette of paint.” For 2018, she predicts large-scale images or repeat patterns will offer a punchy alternative to the small, ditsy patterns of yesteryear. “Millennial pink reigns as the new black and has become a staple base colour, but lilac tones are gaining popularity,” Catherine adds. “Faux texture wallpapers are recognised as a brilliant way to change the character of a space, with brick for a rustic look or concrete for a chic industrial feel, or even wool for softer luxury. The craft/handmade movement is inspiring design, so look out for more free-flowing painterly styles, merging the look of artisan skills with digital-age technology.” Top tip: To enhance a setting and ensure a beautiful wall covering is the focus of a room, pick out key colours from the design and repeat them in plain fabrics and painted woodwork.

Play with pattern “These days, people can choose a look which totally reflects their personality and taste. Whether you prefer a bold colour palette with pops of bright colour, linear or geometric patterns, or shimmering metallics, there’s literally something for everyone,” says Paula Taylor, colour and trends specialist for Graham & Brown. “For 2018, we’ve identified key trends which form the backdrop to our new collections. Our Gothic Damask Flock Cobalt Wallpaper (£75 per roll) comes in a rich cobalt.” “Vibrant tones of turquoise, parakeet green and fuchsia which will burst onto the scene next year, reflecting the desire for botanical opulence and luscious vegetation,” Paula adds. “We’re also focusing on nature in our Bugs Silver Wallpaper, featuring butterflies and insects.” “Global influences are here to stay, with an appreciation of intricate mark-making, weave dying and bold graphic elements. This trend will be a statement look, with sapphire, crimson and papaya colours, underlined by earthier rusts and greys in celebration of highly-coloured pattern.” Top tip: For a stylish statement wall that conjures an eclectic traveller look, consider a bright tropical wallpaper featuring animated creatures and layered forest leaves, paired with natural wood furniture, bamboo accessories and wicker accents. For a modern feel, pair patterned wallpaper in a calming sage green with clean lines and contemporary furniture, and contrast vivid colours with glossy white finishes.

THE MEMBRANE
Whether found in the kitchen, living area, or entrance hall, modern pendant lighting is central to spaces that bring people together and celebrate the social side of life.
A
t Innermost we know the importance of getting the right unique pendant lights for your BEADS interior. Whether choosing contemporary pendants for a modern space, or something more classic for a traditional interior, there are plenty of options to create show-stopping home decorative lighting. We thrive on taking unique ideas and creating beautiful, thoughtful and innovative lighting pendant displays. To create a real impact, don’t be afraid to have fun with scale and use oversize pendants or multiple sizes and colours. Here are our top examples of pendant light fixtures that steal the show. The Membrane by design by Jette Scheib for Innermost is a stunning and unique pendant that is very versatile for residential interiors. Here, it is hung low over the dining table, reflecting light so that the punctured glass catches the attention. Sometimes less is more, and this Scandinavian contemporary interior is perfectly accented by the neutral tones of the grey Circus pendant. Here, one simple statement piece provides perfect home decorative lighting. This residence in Hannover, Germany, uses the classic Circus pendants in a close cluster, using a
variety of sizes to create an excitingly unique display of modern lighting. For a total showstopper look no further than Beads, which has been used in this apartment in London to accent the feature colour: orange. With their highly reflective finish and intriguing bulbous forms, Beads are the pendants guaranteed to add luxury to any interior. This beautiful house in Connecticut oozes style with Stupa being used for an unique modern lighting display. Be brave and add a cluster of colourful pendants to instantly make an innovative and show-stopping feature in a space with high ceilings.
“We thrive on taking unique ideas and creating beautiful, thoughtful and innovative lighting pendant displays” If you want to brighten up a contemporary home, don’t be afraid to mix and match unique pendant lights in various colours. This jolly interior has Snowdrop suspended in a row as a rainbow of colour. Bringing vibrance to the space as well as providing beautiful lighting, this installation is a great way to bring STUPA fun into home decorative lighting. Check out www.innermost.net for even more lighting ideas that will make your interior the most appealing place to be this winter.

says Lucy. “A lovely dark wall will make all your favourite accessories pop - wood looks gorgeous against a strong backdrop, bright colours sing and plants simply glow.” TIP: Wood-clad walls add warmth and texture, but wood-effect wallpaper or wallpaper is also an option. Always consider the direction of your room before choosing a paint colour, as the light will affect the look. South-facing rooms enjoy warm, natural light and can take most colours, while north-facing rooms need a warm-based colour with underlying brown and yellow tones, rather than cool, blue-based hues.
“We talk a lot about ‘style spots’ - a focal point that grabs the eye. It’s a grouping of furniture, artwork and lighting that fits beautifully together and creates impact”
How do you choose a focal point for a room?
different seasons, or just because you want to shake things up.
How do you decide on a decor theme? “We love white rooms with beautiful monochrome accessories - they are stylish, calm and timeless. But nothing gets us more excited than gorgeous dark walls, which conjure a brooding, inky colour palette. Historically, dark paints were at their most popular during Victorian times, but they look fabulous in modern, traditional, rustic and urban interiors,”
“We talk a lot about ‘style spots’ - a focal point that grabs the eye. It’s a grouping of furniture, artwork and lighting that fits beautifully together and creates impact,” explains Jane. “When planning a room, we encourage people to split the space up into sections, such as the fireplace, the seating area, the entrance and so on, then to consider each one as an individual style spot. This is much easier and less daunting than designing a whole room. Bear in mind, the flow of a space is important. It’s always worth shifting furniture around and trying out different combinations for a week or so, to see if a new arrangement works better. It’s amazing how this can change the energy in a space and create a fresh, positive atmosphere.” TIP: Display a collection of pictures, photos, album covers or even handbags on a wall. Before hanging framed pieces, lay them out on the floor to devise a layout and make sure they work well together. Space artworks at least 4cm apart to give each one room to breathe, and put your favourite (or largest) in the middle at eye level, then build outwards from there.

Home is where the art is
It could be argued that we’re all artists, snapping away with our mobiles and generally enjoying a more visual world, but all too often our ‘work’ ends up unseen
P
hotographs of family, friends and holidays are commonly left lingering on laptops and phones, instead of being out on display. What could be easier than dressing your walls with personal photos and artwork for an instant injection of personality? Traditionally, the walls of ancestral homes were hung with elaborate paintings of family members, and now, the modern, affordable equivalent is photographic family portraits. There are lots of ways to display photographic wall art. Individual shots can be blown up into high-impact images and displayed as a focal point. Another successful approach is for each family member to be shot separately rather than as a group - which captures the perso nality of the various individuals, then each can be framed and the prints grouped together on a wall. Create a gallery in a hallway or corridor - use matching frames in the same size and hang them in rows to draw your eye along the space. The great thing about adding art to your home is that it can be done on practically any budget. Whether it’s investing in a painted piece of furniture or framing old postcards or vintage prints, creating a cool, cohesive look is simple, effective and a great way to bring a home to life. Wall murals, once so naff, have won back their

style credentials. There is a huge range online of foreign landscapes, feature shots and famous views from the Pyramids to the Eiffel Tower. Alternatively, opt for a gentle, bucolic effect with a watercolour landscape. Kicking convention out the window and displaying images you really love will result in walls that speak volumes about your taste and way of life. A vibrant or quirky piece of artwork adds a splash of personality in an instant. If hanging prints isn’t quite your thing, consider utilising shelving space and carefully display framed artwork on it, or simply put prints on the floor and lean against a wall. For an inexpensive, imaginative touch, use your children’s artwork - the more abstract and playful the pictures, the more striking the display will be. Don’t be afraid to put a larger picture next to a smaller one, but perhaps balance it by having two or three small pictures taking up the same space as the larger one. A series of different sized pieces can look striking when carefully spaced and hung at the same mid-point, but allow each one enough room to breathe. Don’t be tempted to hang paintings or prints too close together.” Art now comes in all shapes, styles and sizes, giving the opportunity to use your creative flair and illustrate your interests and personality in your own home.

lthough this space rarely gets the love it deserves the rest of the overload of clutter and it’ll be in the spotlight w come to stay. y. Giving v it some TLC if it’s just some new (bargain) beddi accessories like a table lamp or cushion, and a decoration or two will work wonders. A revamp will pay diividends if you end up loving the space and using it more the rest of the time, too. So treat your ‘spare’ to one of these three transformations, then sit back and wait for the compliments from your guests to roll in...
Create a cosy nest “It’s lovely to haave fun with bedding” says Adam Black, co-founder of bed and mattress specialists, Button & Sprung (buttonandsprung.com). ”Use bedding most refflectiv lective of your guests’ decor taste, whether its cotton or linen, plain or patterned. Air the room the day before they arrive, and ensure pets are kept out of it in case visitors haave allergies. A set of soft, scented towels on the edge of a bed is always welcome and ensures guests can pack light. Fresh flo flowers, a scent diffuser, scented drawer liners, and a radio on a bedside table, are thoughtful touches which will be appreciated.” Tip: Make sure there are enough electrical sockets for charging phones, tablets, and laptops, plus an extension cable near the bed. Don’t overdress a bed with cushions, as they’ll only haave to piled up somewhere when the bed’s being used, taking up much needed space in a compact room.
Create An Alpine Sanctuary “Silver, greys and neutral shades conjure a soft, serene look for a guest room, and this scheme is so calming” advises Lucy Ackroyd, design manager at linen and towel specialists, Christy (christyy.co .co.uk). “A shot of colour works really well with this palette. “A palette An injection of rich green, mimicking winter foliage, maybe for a set of towels or cushions will bring a room to life and av avoid it being too bland.” Tip: Thick curtains, a bedside rug, and a draughtexcluder for the door will help keep winter chills at bay. A blackout blind’s another nice touch, which will ensure holiday lie-ins aren’t disrupted by unwanted light.
