RY Vodka has been awarded a Trophy in the Tasting Awards for Vodka at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) 2018. This is the highest accolade a brand can receive from the ISC, which is regarded as the most respected and sought-after award in the drinks industry. Silent Pool Distillers in Albury makes Wry Vodka from a 100% rye grain spirit that is re-distilled with a small amount of rye malt and filtered over traditionally made wood charcoal to add a sweet, creamy mouth-feel. This complements the hint of spice in the base spirit. And thanks to two new solar arrays installed at the distillery, all its spirits are now powered by sunshine! The charcoal helps give the vodka its distinctive taste and smoothness. Silent Pool Distillers researched Surrey tree species and chose hornbeam as it has the densest wood and grows naturally on the Albury Estate. Just the other side of the North Downs from
the distillery in Clandon, woodsman John Sinclair uses a traditional technique to convert the wood into charcoal using a kiln deep in the forest. It takes a slow three day burn for the hornbeam to turn into a dense charcoal with a large surface area. After the spirit has been distilled and diluted, it is slowly trickled through a deep bed of the charcoal, to filter out any impurities. The end product is a creamy, smooth Vodka with a delicate peppery finish. Smooth enough to sip but versatile enough for favourite cocktails. ISC Trophy winners represent the very best within their specific category. Awarded to fewer than 2.5% of entrants, they are selected by an expert panel of more than 50 specialist, world renowned judges, in blind tastings. WRY Vodka beat strong competition to win the prestigious accolade, the supreme quality of its liquid is reflected in the result. Awards Organiser Justin Smith said: “This year has seen more entries than ever before, with producers entering a diverse mix of spirits from across the globe who are looking to benchmark their spirit at the very highest level. Trophies highlight the very best in their categories and from the 1,600-plus entrants from nearly 70 countries, only 41 Trophies were awarded in total across all of the categories.” Silent Pool Distillers Director Ian McCulloch was delighted with the Trophy. “We have been winning international competitions with Silent Pool Gin and our Eau De Vie ever since we began distilling in 2015 so it is really rewarding to have our Wry Vodka up there in lights as well. It’s classy and different and we think it’s a great taste.” Availability - Distillery shop (7 days a week) retail price of £22 - Distillery shop onlineFor Trade enquiries please email louise@caskliquidmarketing.com www.silentpooldistillers.com

RESTAURANT REVIEW
GIGGLING SQUID, WINDSOR
T
hames Street in Windsor has recently gained a new restaurant - Giggling Squid. Wonderful food, warm and friendly atmosphere and an inspiring interior, this eatery simply has to be on the list of places to dine. Windsor’s Giggling Squid has the feel of an independent. The attention to detail is second to none and the service from the staff is very personable. This is the 27th Giggling Squid, and there are set to be 30 by the end of the year.
“This is the 27th Giggling Squid, and there are set to be 30 by the end of the year” There were two of us that dined. There was a selection to suit us both, and we chose a sharing dish so that we could try a few things. The Sharing Platter consists of hand-cut pork grilled skewers, salt and pepper squid (a favourite of mine!), Thai chicken wings and vegetable spring rolls. As one of the diners is gluten free this selection suited her needs easily, with the exception of the spring rolls and the squid. It comes served with a variety of different dipping sauces that varied in heat and flavour this dish really suited us both. After savouring the delights of the starters we moved on to the mains. Asking for recommendations from our waiter (Harry who was fantastic by the way, interesting, helpful, polite, 24 SEPTEMBER 2018
funny and knew his stuff) and giving him a couple of ideas on things we might like he suggested the Pad Cha. This was based on my saying how much I had loved the Fishing Village dish previously and wanted to be sure I enjoyed something as much, whilst wanting a bit of spice, and sticking with seafood. The dish certainly delivered, the flavour from the pounded chilli was immense, the variety of seafood in the dish did not disappoint. It was quite spicy, I think it deserved the ‘two chilli’ grading on the menu, but it was flavoursome and I would definitely order it again. My dining partner ordered the Lamb Shank Massaman, a mild dish. The menu states that you won’t find this in a restaurant in Thailand but quite frankly, as they say, it just works so well! Melting in your mouth the Massaman flavour with the lamb is just wonderful. There were a number of delectable desserts to choose from, the Molten Chocolate Dessert won hands down. Chocolate heaven to finish off a perfectly lovely meal. We spotted on the menu that they do some fantastic lunchtime deals on set menus, we will be back soon to try them out. Throughout the meal the staff were attentive, we were looked after by Harry and he made sure that we had everything that we needed. A great atmosphere, interesting surroundings – no wonder Giggling Squid are a growing group of restaurants. If you’ve not been, be sure to try them out. www.gigglingsquid.com. 01753 851011

Sunday 16 September 10.30-12.30
s the late golden days of summer slowly fade into autumn, thoughts turn to outdoor adventures. After a summer spent lounging on beaches or by the riverside, September is the perfect month for refreshing walks through the countryside, a chance to reenergise and enjoy the great outdoors. The Arboretum has a wide variety of habitats and landscapes to explore, from wetlands to woodland. Winkworth is famous for its technicolour display of leaves during the autumn, carefully thought out by the Arboretum’s founder, Doctor Fox, who planted trees specifically to create striking lakeside vistas, maximising the effect of the colourful leaves, by allowing them to be reflected into the lake. Along with this seasonal extravaganza of leaves, nuts and fruits, autumn also brings with it a season of spectacular fungi. Often hidden amongst the trees, nestled into roots, or growing in nooks and crannies, there’s a whole world of mushroom oddities waiting to be discovered. The Fungi Foray on Sunday 16th September is the perfect chance to head out into the Arboretum with an expert guide Sara Shepley, who will be on hand to help you identify the huge variety of different mushrooms which can be found onsite. Whilst beautiful, some fungi can be extremely poisonous, so it is recommended that people do not pick or touch fungi in the wild without expert guidance as species are hard to identify. Keen photographers will enjoy the chance to capture images of the fungi, which can appear as anything from small, delicate, toadstool like mushrooms, much like those in fairy tales, or as huge bracket fungi clinging to the bark of trees. They have names to match too, whether it’s oakbug 28 SEPTEMBER 2018
milkcap, giant puffball or orange-peel fungus. The slightly damp yet still fairly warm weather of early autumn is the perfect time for fungi to grow. The important part of a fungus, the mycelium, lives underground and is vital for woodland health as they recycle nutrients needed for living plants to thrive. However, in autumn the fungi start to grow and as these fruiting bodies ripen their seeds, known as spores, are released into the air to start the next generation. In a busy world where you’re never far away from a screen, it’s a joy to be able to take a step back and learn a forgotten art from days gone by. Tickets are available to book online on our website or via the National Trust’s Central Box Office. Children are welcome to join the adventure, as are well behaved dogs on short leads. If you’re unable to attend on 16th September, then there will be additional Fungi Forays on 7th and 20th October. See the website for details.

ightdresses made for Queen Mary and letters from royal households ordering embroidered gifts will be on display in a new heritage room, designed to showcase The Grange charity’s historic collection of needlework. The Grange began life as The School of Stitchery and Lace in 1938 and had fascinating connections with the Royal family. The new Heritage Room based at The Grange’s Victorian building in Bookham, has been funded by a £97,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and tells the story of The School of Stitchery and Lace, a pioneering organisation that taught girls with disabilities to sew and make lace so that they could earn their own living. The spirit of the School’s work continues today as The Grange supports over 100 people with learning disabilities to lead independent lives. The project has involved carefully preserving the charity’s historic collection which includes embroidered items made for the Royal family, photographs, letters and books. Correspondence between The School and royal households gives a rare insight into palace life at the time. One of the letters is from Queen Elizabeth’s nurse ordering a copy of a favourite dress which the then Princess had grown out of and there are also hand-drawn designs for Queen Mary’s nightgowns. Eloise Appleby, CEO of The Grange charity said: ‘This is a fantastic addition to Surrey’s historical past

and a definite high point of our 80th anniversary year. We are delighted that we have been able to use Heritage Lottery funding to create a state of the art new interactive learning and heritage space open to all visitors. We will use this to build stronger links between the charity and the local community and it will become part of the Bookham Heritage Trail. ‘People we support at The Grange will be involved in running the Heritage Room and we hope that local schools and community groups will make full use of it going forward.’ The Heritage Room will include: • Exhibits of needlework made for Queen Mary • Oral histories of former School pupils and staff • Letters from ladies in waiting commissioning embroidered items • Vintage photos for the School if Stitchery and Lace • History of The Grange building • A collection of books and vintage magazines on needlework The Heritage Room will be open for a preview on Heritage Day, Saturday, 15 September 2018 and will be opened officially on 25 September by our patron HRH The Duke of Gloucester KC GCVO. www.grangecentre.org.uk

isclosure is the process in litigation during which the parties disclose to the other parties documents that are relevant to the case. The parties can therefore see evidence that both supports and undermines its case. It very often proves one of the more lengthy, and costly, phases in litigation. New rules governing disclosure have been announced to operate in the Business and Property Courts that will take effect from 1 January 2019. These new rules aim to tackle the length and cost of disclosure through simplifying the procedure where possible. The important changes will be: • A new express duty to disclose known adverse documents in all cases. Previously, an order to do so would have to have been made. • Initial disclosure of key documents necessary for other parties to understand the case they have to meet will be given with the parties’ Statements of Case, i.e. the Particulars of Claim (Claimant) or the Defence (Defendant). This is earlier than the current position. It is hoped that this initial disclosure may mean further, lengthier and more onerous disclosure later in the case is not needed. And, perhaps, it may lead the parties to an early preaction settlement. • Following Statements of Case, the parties will be
34 SEPTEMBER 2018
required to meet, discuss disclosure and produce a joint Disclosure Review Document. This document will set out the issues on which documents might assist the Court to determine the issues, make proposals for further disclosure and share information concerning the storage of documents and methods to search documents. It is hoped this Disclosure Review Document will assist the parties to agree upon a disclosure method that is best-suited to the case. The parties must cooperate in producing this document so that the Court knows the parties’ views and the likely costs of the disclosure proposed. • The Court will also consider disclosure methods and there is a push for the Court to be more involved in this process, guided by the familiar tests of reasonableness and proportionality, and to not simply accept the method proposed by the parties. The parties will also be able to apply to the Court for guidance where necessary. As always with procedural changes, the proof will be in the pudding to see whether the changes have the desired effect, i.e. the reduction of costs and alleviating the burden of disclosure, or whether they give rise to further arguments that ultimately add to the burden and cost of the process. he enormous contribution Brooklands made to aviation through much of the twentieth century will be celebrated at its annual Aviation Day on Sunday 16th September. Since the first UK flight trials of A V Roe took place there in 1908, through two world wars, into the jet age and Concorde, Brooklands has been a major centre for aviation manufacture, flight and testing for over 80 years. One of the main attractions of the day will undoubtedly be the scheduled fly-ins from visiting aircraft*. The Factory, together with the newly-built Flight Shed which houses the Museum’s live aircraft won a Museums & Heritage Award this year in the permanent exhibition category. Also on site, the Hawker Fury, Hurricane, Sopwith Camel and mighty Vickers Vimy will all be on display. There will be static aero-engine runs* on the day and in the Paddock, the area in front of the historic Clubhouse, the largest gathering of children’s pedal planes is being attempted. Also for the youngsters will be a free aviation-themed activity and in the Museum Shop, books, models and toys all relating to aviation will be available to buy. The beautiful Surrey Hills While the country is basking in uninterrupted sunshine for the past few weeks, the first question that most of our visitors ask is how are the vines coping?
H
ere at Denbies Estate the vineyard is in full bloom, with the vines soaking up the glorious summer sunshine. Flowering has now finished and we have fruit set and good pollination throughout, with our newly-planted young vines growing nicely. The team are working hard to ensure that we make the most of these optimum conditions and things are looking promising for a lovely harvest. Reports from all over the ‘English wine country’ echo our sentiments and this year is certainly looking to be unprecedented in both quality and quantity. The vineyard with its 7 miles of public footpath trails and close proximity to Box Hill is perfect for rambling, running and dog walking. Denbies also offers daily vineyard tours which take visitors to the highest point of the vineyard and with spectacular far reaching views, cameras are definitely recommended. The late summer/autumn is the ideal time of year to visit the vineyard. The vines are almost at their optimum point and the green vines are laden with fruit ready for harvest in late September/ October. Denbies Bacchus Marathon and half Marathon is one of the highlights of the pre-harvest season. Now in its 9th ‘vintage’, anyone can get involved, as there is a full and half marathons as well as a five-mile and two-mile course through a wine estate to complete, and participants can also run or walk it so no training is involved for the smaller courses. MAJOR NEW ITV DRAMA SERIES VANITY FAIR FILMED AT WEST HORSLEY PLACE
I
TV’s new adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel, Vanity Fair, is set to become one of the biggest TV dramas of the year – and much of the action was filmed at Grade I listed West Horsley Place. With a stellar cast including Olivia Cooke, Tom Bateman, Johnny Flynn, Martin Clunes, Frances de la Tour, Suranne Jones and Michael Palin, West Horsley Place provides the setting for Queen’s Crawley in this adaptation of Thackeray’s literary classic, which takes place during the Napoleonic Wars and follows modern heroine Becky Sharp (Olivia Cooke) as she attempts to claw her way out of poverty and scale the heights of English Society. The series will be screened on ITV this autumn over seven episodes starting on Sunday 2 September at 9pm. West Horsley Place is an ancient 380 acre estate separating the Surrey villages of West and East Horsley, at the centre of which stands a Grade I listed manor house dating from the 15th century. With remarkably surviving interiors from the 16th to the 18th century and with little 19th or 20th century intervention, West Horsley Place displays the evolution of architecture during this period. The house has passed through the hands of illustrious owners including Henry VIII – who enjoyed a 35 course lunch in the Stone Hall - Carew Raleigh, son of Sir Walter Raleigh, and Lady Elizabeth Fitzgerald, ‘Fair Geraldine’ of the Earl of Surrey’s famous sonnet. Queen Elizabeth I is known to have stayed on several occasions. More recently, in 2014 historian and former
presenter of University Challenge, Bamber Gascoigne, unexpectedly inherited West Horsley Place from his aunt, Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe. Decades of benign neglect had taken their toll on the house and also on the eight Grade II listed structures situated on the estate. In October 2016, West Horsley Place was placed on the Historic England ‘At Risk’ Register. To rescue and restore the house and estate, and to give them a new life and purpose, Bamber and Christina Gascoigne have generously transferred ownership of West Horsley Place to a charity, the Mary Roxburghe Trust. Once restored, West Horsley Place will become a vibrant centre for the performing and visual arts, and for the teaching of crafts.
“West Horsley Place displays the evolution of architecture during this period” An important first step in achieving this goal is the construction of the Theatre in the Woods, a new 750 seat theatre that will be a great asset to the local community. The Theatre in the Woods has been built by Grange Park Opera who hold an annual summer opera season at West Horsley Place. The use of West Horsley Place as a location for film and TV provides essential income to fund restoration works as well as fitting into West Horsley Place’s ethos as a home for the arts. © Richard Lewisohn

Commenting, Peter Pearce, Director of West Horsley Place, said: “We were thrilled to be chosen as a location for Vanity Fair, and are very much looking forward to seeing West Horsley Place on television this autumn.” “Literature is all-important to the story of this great house. When Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe died, in addition to the bequest to Bamber Gascoigne was a bequest to Trinity College, Cambridge of 7,500 books held in the library at West Horsley Place collected by the Duchess’ father and grandfather and recognised as “one of the most important private collections in Britain.” Amongst the treasures to have been discovered here were first editions by Byron, Shelley, Wordsworth and Tennyson and previously unknown manuscripts of Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, Florence Nightingale and Charles Dickens. Now, at the Wren Library, these treasures are available to everyone.” He continued: “Through film, we are able to celebrate these literary links and to take a step closer to saving West Horsley Place. Our vision is that West Horsley Place will be reborn as a place for everyone to enjoy, whether as an opera guest, visitor to the house or garden or as a student learning a craft to enjoy and practice at home. There is a great history to be discovered, and a new role for this grand old house to play in its community. It will be an entrancing future!” Martin Clunes, who plays Sir Pitt Crawley in the adaptation, said: “West Horsley was my favourite of all of the houses we visited. Freezing but beautiful. It’s colder inside than out. But it is really pretty. And it looks real, lived in and a bit wonky.” West Horsley Place will be opening its doors to the public for Heritage Open Days on 15 and 16 September. Access is by pre-booked guided tour only (FREE) with booking opening on 3 September. Visit www.westhorsleyplace.org

The BBC Proms have announced its 2018 season. Across more than 90 concerts over eight weeks, the Proms draws the world’s greatest classical musicians to London, including Kirill Petrenko with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Sir Antonio Pappano with the Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Rome, Daniel Barenboim with the West–Eastern Divan Orchestra, Joyce DiDonato, Joshua Bell and Yuja Wang.
50 SEPTEMBER 2018
he 2018 Proms marks a range of events that occurred 100 years ago. Leonard Bernstein, who was born in 1918, was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His work as conductor, composer, pianist, and educationalist are explored in depth this season. John Wilson leads performances of West Side Story, arguably the best-loved musical of all time. The bank-holiday weekend, on what would have been Bernstein’s 100th birthday, will feature a Proms debut for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. 100 years since the end of the First World War, the Proms revisits this key period in modern history. A contemporary response by one of today’s most imaginative and eclectic young composers, Anna Meredith, in collaboration with 59 Productions, sees a major new work for orchestra, choir and projections premiered on the First Night of the Proms. The BBC’s Orchestras and Choirs once again provide the backbone to the Proms, appearing in over a third of the concerts this season. As BBC Young Musician celebrates its 40th birthday, the Proms present the first ever Young Musician Prom, a gala concert bringing together over 20 of the competition’s alumni, including Nicola Benedetti, Michael Collins and Sheku Kanneh-Mason. This comes alongside a celebration of the BBC Proms Inspire scheme for young composers in its 20th-birthday year, and the fourth consecutive BBC Ten Pieces Prom. A groundbreaking initiative that has already reached over 4 million people, this summer it collaborates with English Pen, an arts charity that works with young people from asylum-seeker and refugee backgrounds, and London Music Masters, an organisation focussed on reaching children and young people in London’s poorest neighbourhoods.
Nine Late Night Proms contain an eclectic range of musical styles that reflect the more intimate setting of these ‘after-hours’ events. Highlights include the Proms debut of Grammy Awardwinning Senegalese singer, Youssou Ndour and his band, Le Super Étoile de Dakar, while original members of the Buena Vista Social Club come to the Royal Albert Hall stage for the first time too for ‘Havana Meets Kingston’, a project fusing the sound-worlds of traditional and contemporary Cuba and Jamaica. In ‘New York: Sound of a City’, Proms favourite Jules Buckley and a line-up of rising stars explore the current sounds on New York’s streets, embracing everything from disco-punk to feminist rap. Also in the Late Night series, Sir András Schiff concludes a two-year project with a performance of Book 2 of J. S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier. There are over 90 debuts this season, notably the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in its 100thbirtday year. Achieving widespread acclaim in recent years for their highly original interpretations, Teodor Currentzis and MusicAeterna make their Proms debut, bringing their radical approach to Beethoven to performances of his Second and Fifth Symphonies. With more than 100,000 tickets available at under £15, Promming (standing) tickets costing just £6 and half-price seats for under-18s, the Proms continues to bring the best of classical music to the widest possible audience. With world-class performances for those coming to the Royal Albert Hall and to the millions of people at home through BBC TV, online platforms and BBC Radio 3, where every note is broadcast, the Proms audience continues to grow ever wider. Tickets are available via www.bbc.co.uk/proms or by calling 020 7070 4441 or in person at the Royal Albert Hall

Although boarding environments can offer an excellent solution to the difficulties of juggling two demanding careers, working parents can still feel pressured to keep their children at home. The old image of bleak dormitories and cold showers still persists, but the traditional boarding environment is very much changed. Modern boarding is now all about choice and variety, with full, weekly and flexi boarding all on offer. Weekly boarding, where children go home with parents after matches on Saturdays, can offer a useful option to families juggling two careers. The decision over boarding should be one that families make together, visiting as many schools as possible to ensure the choice is right. The most important thing that boarding offers

children is time. A parent’s decision to allow a son or daughter to spend so much time away can really only be justified by the fulfilment of their lives at school. Full boarding gives greater time in the evenings and weekends for pupils to be involved in a wide-range of interests with the aim of becoming more well-rounded characters. Boarding gives teachers the time to develop deeper trust and partnership and boarders really make the most of their school day. Rather than being stuck in a car commuting to school they are out on the pitches and in the studios rehearsing, or attending evening lectures from visiting speakers or simply hanging out with friends in the boarding house. Such a boarding experience will ensure that pupils leave as confident, independent, personable, well-rounded, adaptable and caring young people who are equipped to make the most of their talents. www.cranleigh.org
The evening will feature talks from: Grace Moody Smith, Director of The Good Schools Guide Education Consultants; Jan Shilling, Education Consultant formerly with the Independent Schools Council; and Neil Brooks, Headmaster at Cranleigh Prep School, as well as Martin Reader in his role as Chair of the BSA. This event is open to parents and prep schools who are interested to know more about what boarding can offer, whether they are considering Cranleigh or another boarding school. The evening will commence with drinks and bowlfood at 6.30pm, followed by some short presentations and a Q&A session. There will be an opportunity for more questions over drinks following the presentations, with a gathered audience of parents, current boarding parents and pupils, Housemasters and Housemistresses. Tickets are free but as places are limited booking is essential via jrc@cranleigh.org

Transitioning from school to university H
The transition from school to university can be difficult and unsettling, and whilst new-found freedom can be liberating, not all young adults feel prepared for independent coeducational living. It can also be difficult for those who are used to a singlesex environment. Students who have entered the Upper Sixth at Hurst College during the past 20 years or so have been based in one co-educational house, St John’s. Currently, St John’s is home to 160 students who all have their own room with a bed, even if they are day students, with separate corridors for the boys and girls.
urst students are already used to having co-ed classes and in St John’s they learn to live with each other in a co-ed environment. They make full use of the large social space, where they can play table tennis and pool, sit and discuss work or simply relax in a vibrant and civilised atmosphere. “They enjoy the feeling of having some extra space and it enables them to live with a broader range of people, which is far more representative of real life and as a result prepares them more effectively for university and the world beyond”, said Caty Jacques, Hurst’s Deputy Head (Pastoral). As well as trying to bridge the gap between school and university, the idea of St John’s is to create an environment that encourages greater independence. “We give our students more independence as they progress through the school, whilst still providing a safety net of support when it is needed”, said Caty. Hurst’s St John’s model has proved so successful, that many other independent schools have recently followed their example. The sense of camaraderie and support in St John’s – also seen throughout the rest of the school - is tangible as students tackle the process of completing UCAS forms and EPQs (Extended Project Qualification), understanding only too well the challenges faced by their peers. Upper Sixth students are provided with a sensible introduction to alcohol, at twice weekly bar nights when they are allowed up to two drinks each. “At the start of the year they can’t wait to have two alcoholic drinks, but by the end of the year they’re often quite happy with a Diet Coke and a packet of crisps”, said Caty. They also enjoy other social events, such as discos, which are absolutely vital to help them unwind in a challenging year. St John’s has also created its own traditions. To raise money at Halloween, the Upper Sixth organise a haunted house night for the younger students who pay to enter an appropriately themed environment. “The younger children see the Upper Sixth students as grown-ups – which they are”, said Caty. In essence, St John’s provides an increased amount of freedom, with an excellent support network, which effectively bridges the gap between a school environment and life outside of Hurst.
Best of the best for careers guidance and work experience Hurst College was named the best of the best for careers guidance and work experience by The Week magazine in their 2017 UK Independent School Awards. The judges were impressed by the work placement programme run by Hurst’s Careers Department as well as the interview skills training, UCAS presentations, gap year fairs and seminars. 62 SEPTEMBER 2018
This award was the culmination of another great year in the college’s careers department, as it continues to grow speed talk and work placement programmes. They also organised their first Careers Networking Event for Sixth Form students and supported their hopeful medics, vets and dentists with a more complete programme of workshops, interview practice and volunteer opportunities. Steve Lewis from LinkedIn launched the inaugural Careers Networking Event, where the Sixth Formers engaged with more than 50 industry representatives from a variety of key professions such as marketing communications, financial services, finance, IT, STEM, law and property. Following a rigorous application and interview process, 106 of the college’s students secured a work placement last summer covering 132 weeks of experience between them, and gained an invaluable learning opportunity to assist with personal statements, university applications/interviews and future career paths.
Hurst students also enjoy a series of Speed Talk events, delivered by the Hurst parent body and alumni, on a variety of industries and careers including: medical, PR, journalism and event management, TV, theatre and production, veterinary, archaeology and museum/archivist, engineering and science. Each event has up to six hosts representing different aspects of their professions, which enable students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities available to them and routes of entry. The programme for medics, vets and dentists has been expanded by inviting former students currently studying these subjects, parents and working alumni to engage and pass on the benefit of their experience. The next Hurst Sixth Form open morning will take place on 6 October and places can be booked on line at www.hppc.co.uk or by contacting the admissions department on 01273 836937.

Opening the door to
your child’s future A
A guide to School Open Days
s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? • What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? 66 SEPTEMBER 2018
• What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

Skills for modern life ‘N
o more jobs for life.’ Marina Gardiner Legge, headteacher at Heathfield, an independent boarding and day school in Ascot for girls aged 11-18, shares her thoughts on which skills will best equip girls for multiple careers in an ever changing workplace. With the economy changing, markets becoming more global, and increasing automation leading to huge changes in industry, young women leaving school in the next five years will have a much longer working life, potentially in careers that do not yet exist. How can a school prepare them when there are so many unknowns? A new report Life Lessons* highlights the recognition among teachers, employers and young people on how important life skills are to the success of young people. I agree wholeheartedly. Taking academic excellence as a given, there are other skills that are increasingly important to children’s wider development, such as confidence, social skills, self-control, motivation and resilience – all essential ‘life-skills’. As the report says, these attitudes, skills and behaviours underpin success in school and work, and include the ability to respond to setbacks, work well with others, build relationships, communicate effectively, manage emotions, and cope with difficult situations. It is apparent that schools need to ensure therefore that the education that they are offering

is also focusing on these skills giving young people the opportunity to learn, apply and evaluate these skills. The co-curricular offering and chances for leadership here are crucial such as showing prospective parents around the school, standing up and declaiming one’s own poem, or playing in an orchestra at a public performance. Even then a school such as Heathfield which embraces the contribution a pupil makes outside the classroom, needs to ensure that their contribution is evaluated and improved so that every young person leaves equipped and ready not just for the next stage of their development, but for every stage of their lives. If we are to educate our students to value and develop their imagination and creativity, to become more collaborative and to see innovation as a worthwhile goal, then we need to look beyond the traditional school curriculum. Extramural activities must offer value-added opportunities giving the students the opportunity – and the time – to pursue their own interests, to be confident and motivated and to relish fresh challenges.
About Marina Gardiner Legge Marina was a boarding school girl who went on to Oxford to study English. Her first job was in advertising and she spent several years in Hong Kong where she taught disabled children to ride. She was so inspired by this experience that she decided to train as a teacher. Benefits of the independent school
W
ith options ranging from boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a school to suit each and every child. Here are some of the reasons why parents are choosing to give their children the unique experience of private school and why it’s worth the financial investment.
Enriched academic opportunities One of the accepted benefits of private schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate programme, just to name a few. The IB programme focuses on school work and on developing you as a whole person. Private school students constantly score top marks on standardized tests and college entrance exams, and many schools have a 100 per cent rate of students attending their university of choice.
Controlled class sizes A comprehensive study on class size made by educational researchers Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests. The gains from smaller class sizes 70 SEPTEMBER 2018
are stronger the longer a child is exposed to them. Private schools vary greatly in size, but depending on their teaching style, almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.
Dedicated teachers In a study completed by the Fraser Institute in 2007, 91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school. Instructors are both qualified and passionate about their subjects, often holding advanced degrees in their field. Within the tight-knit school community, students have close relationships with their teachers who commonly act as role models. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.
Parental involvement Private schools are built around open communication between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.
“91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school”
A safe environment
Development for today’s and tomorrow’s world
Private schools have reputations for maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower staff-to-student ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in post-secondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.
Private schools go beyond offering the mandatory subjects required by provincial curriculum; they can offer students a wide range of specializations including arts programs, athletics, maths and science. Private schools are responsible for producing many leaders in politics, business and society, with a history of adapting quickly to changes in technology and culture. And today, they are also sought by parents of children with special needs such as behaviour problems or learning disabilities.
Ample resources At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.
Extracurricular activities While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a wellrounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts or clubs. This involvement helps stimulate students in their studies, as noted in a study at Stanford University that found that students involved in the arts are more motivated to learn and are three times more likely to win a school attendance award. Extracurricular activities can provide a much-needed break from the stresses of academics while developing skills and engaging in valuable social situations.

The school of
happy smiles I
n the words of one of our Year 3 pupils, Dowsend is “the school of happy smiles”. Education at Downsend goes beyond examination success and the academic environment. When you give us your child to look after and nurture our aim is to inspire their young minds, to instil a love of learning and to offer as many opportunities as possible to make sure natural talents are discovered and championed. We want to inspire our pupils to engage in the world around them and think for themselves. Our pupils work hard and learn by getting actively involved in everything they do. It’s not out of the ordinary to see the Battle of Hastings being reenacted on the cricket pitch or a class investigating air resistance outdoors tied to parachutes. Or our Pre-Prep children acquiring number skills and making mud pies in Forest School. We know our children are excited to come to school because their parents tell us. At Downsend, English, Science, Maths, Languages, Humanities, Art and Technology are being lifted off the pages of textbooks and worksheets with creativity and interaction thanks to our highly skilled specialist teachers. Experiences that inspire young minds develop pupils who are happy, and when they are happy we know they learn, grow in confidence and become ambitious to excel. ‘Inspiring Young Minds’ is not just our motto. It is the heart and soul of our school. It guides our teachers, encourages our pupils to be the best they can be, shapes our creative and challenging curriculum, informs our diverse range of extracurricular activities, and permeates our vibrant school life – both in and outside the classroom. Our children have spark because we support them to take responsibility and engage in their own learning. Our approach works! We have a 100% success rate at Common Entrance and over 200 senior school scholarship places have been awarded since 2013. See just how busy our school is at www.downsend.co.uk or follow us on Twitter @DownsendSchool or like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DownsendSchool Our school website and social media can’t possibly bring Downsend to life for you like a real visit can. Come and hear the cheers on the rugby pitches, the instruments playing in the music pods, the excited voices in the science labs, the lively debates in lessons. You are very welcome to come and see our inspiring school for yourself. Our next Open Week at the Pre-Preps is Monday 1 October to Friday 5 October and our next Open Morning at the Prep School is on Saturday, 6 October.

THINKING ABOUT TAKING A GAP YEAR?
Each year, thousands of students plan extended travel adventures. Sarah Marshall shares some essential advice.
A
n increasing number of students are choosing to break up their studies by travelling overseas for extended periods - and a growing number of established professionals are also pressing pause for a career break too. But while a freewheeling attitude and sense of adventure are key to successful backpacking, careful planning is equally essential. If you’re considering taking off in the next few months, here are some top tips you might want to know...
right bag that isn’t too heavy (around 50 or 60 litres is ideal) and which fits comfortably. You should aim to have the weight distributed 70-80% on the hips and 20-30% on the shoulders.
Make a plan
Decide what to take
Half the fun of backpacking is wondering where you might end up, but it’s still worth having a rough plan in mind. It will help you to budget not only money - but also time.
Clothing will depend on your choice of destination, so think carefully about the climates you plan to visit. Merino wool base layers are ideal for cold destinations, and look out for T-shirts featuring Polygiene - a stay fresh technology which slows bacteria growth and keeps clothes clean for longer. A universal adapter, a compact quick-dry towel and a sink plug (because most of the sinks you’ll encounter won’t have one) are all extremely useful and won’t take up too much space.
Consider an organised tour to get you started If you’re nervous about travelling alone, think about booking a place on a group tour to kickstart your adventure. It will give you an opportunity to settle into the rhythm of travel and may also help you make a few friends. Contiki and Leap specialise in tours for younger travellers, while Exodus and Explore cater for an older market.
Don’t be too ambitious There are so many places to visit in the world and there’s no pressure to see them all at once. Don’t listen to country counters who brag about the number of borders they’ve crossed; it’s far more rewarding to spend quality time in a destination.
Buy the right bag Whether you’re planning to travel for two weeks or two months, your backpack will become your best friend for the duration. Take time to purchase the 74 SEPTEMBER 2018
Pack properly There’s no point buying an enormous backpack which you won’t be able to carry. Maximise the use of space in your bag by packing efficiently and leaving few gaps. Make sure items are also evenly distributed to ease weight pressure.
“To really get under the skin of a destination though, try and engage with some of the people who actually live there. Even a short conversation in a cafe can give you some insight into a place”
Mingle with the locals It’s very easy to stick with fellow backpackers - and can often be good fun. To really get under the skin of a destination though, try and engage with some of the people who actually live there. Even a short conversation in a cafe can give you some insight into a place.
Don’t get hooked on WiFi Uploading images to social media is a great way to stay in touch with friends back at home - but don’t let it detract from your travelling experience. Accept you may not always be able to log on in remote places, and also remember to appreciate time spent detached from technology.

Step into the most exciting school in England “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised”
A
lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for. Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eyecatching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time 76 SEPTEMBER 2018
to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.” Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.” Who could ask for anything more?

My Imagination Workshops promoting mindfulness and self-esteem in children
M
y Imagination is the brainchild of Kate Broughton. Kate has created a series of unique, interactive workshops with the aim of developing the minds of the future. Kate has spent her entire career working with children in one capacity or another - as a ballet teacher for over 15 years, a mum for 20 years and various positions working in schools and delivering creativity workshops. She realised that a lot of children find it challenging to recognise and express their feelings. Whether a 4 year old or a 14 year old, there is a time in all of our lives when we act out and feel confused about the way we are feeling. Kate decided to combine her knowledge of working with children, her own life experiences growing up and her knowledge of the science behind ‘how we are is the direct result of how we think’, and came up with My Imagination. Basically, everything we choose to do in life starts with our self-image - the way we see ourselves determines our future. What we think about, and how those thoughts make us feel, determine how we act. This is a subject that people are paying more and more attention to, with scientists having discovered that our bodies and actions are directly affected by the thoughts and images we hold in our mind. Therefore, the more positive those thoughts and images are, the better our mental health, wellbeing, self-esteem and outcomes. Arming our children with the tools to do this from a young age allows them to reap these benefits throughout their lives. It is widely believed that
80 SEPTEMBER 2018
building self-esteem and self-confidence in children is a key factor in them growing up feeling happy and secure. The aim of the My Imagination workshops is to prove that positive thoughts plus positive feelings, create positive results. Workshops at My Imagination are split into age groups – 3-5yrs, 6-9yrs, 10-12yrs and 13-16yrs. In each workshop the children will experience gratitude, relaxation, self-confidence and resilience. They will also learn skills to recognise and manage their feelings and how to focus their minds through a variety of activities. These are skills that aren’t necessarily taught in the current school curriculum but are skills which every child will benefit from. Workshops are held at Addlestone Community Centre and other venues local to the Addlestone area. For further details on these workshops, you can visit the My Imagination Facebook page: www.facebook.com/kate.myimagination or visit www.myimagination.org.uk

GAME-CHANGING RESULTS An award-winning medical entrepreneur, who has developed a unique skin healing system that could save the NHS a fortune, tells how she struggled to get a job as a research scientist because she was a woman. Sujata Jolly, who invented a range of skin treatments, was sent to the production line despite her degree when she tried to break into the male-dominated field of chemical and industrial research.
“E
verywhere I went, they just looked at me with disdain,” says Sujata, whose firm Clinogen is based in Windsor. “It was men’s work and I had no business being there. I went for a job with Beecham and every researcher was a man in a white coat. They said the only job I could have was on the shop floor packing; they weren’t interested in my qualifications.” Sujata, originally from Kenya, eventually broke into research with ICI and GKN, still in a maledominated environment. “I worked there for many years then joined an aerospace engineering firm where I developed a silicone rubber digester for Rolls Royce engine housings. It was a challenging problem and took two years to come up with the product but, being a woman, I didn’t get full credit for it. I was asked who was helping me as they couldn’t believe a woman, had solved a problem that had been troubling the industry for decades. When I wrote the report, my manager took credit for it. I was furious. I was being paid five times less than some of my fellow workers and they were taking my ideas for themselves. This was the early 1970s and the gender pay gap and discrimination were way worse than today. I decided I needed to work for myself.” Sujata started her company while bringing up her two young daughters. “It was tough but I was determined. I was trained in medical sciences and had a particular interest in dermatology so was committed to not let that training and my ideas go to waste,” she adds. Sujata developed formulae for treating dermatological conditions such as acne, rosacea and pitted skin, and for anti-ageing. “The difference it makes is incredible. One 18-year-old patient with acne was told that he would be scarred for life and was struggling with his anti acne medication. But
we were able to treat him and give him back his skin. The personality change and confidence boost was amazing to witness.” Her latest product, Youki Bio-Cell spray, promises game-changing results with its wound-healing properties. Sujata, who is medical director and CEO of Clinogen Laboratories, in Windsor, has case studies of successfully treating clients with diabetic ulcers that got so bad that toe or foot amputation was considered. Around 7,000 foot amputations on diabetic patients are performed in England each year with a £1.3 billion cost to the NHS. The product, which is sprayed on an open wound, creates scaffolding across the wound allowing the body’s healing process to work quickly. “The standard procedure is to put a dressing on it but that can increase the risk of infection,” adds Sujata, who won the Medical LiveWire Global Award 2016 for Innovation in Wound Healing prize for Youki. “But we can now treat severe cases including some where the doctors were considering amputation. “It is registered as a medical device and has the potential to save the NHS a lot of money, reducing the heartache for patients and their families. I’m very proud of what we have developed and how much we can help people and the planet as it is biodegradable and has a miniscule carbon footprint as there are no clinical waste cost. Life has come a long way since I couldn’t even get a job because I was a woman to a fairer society, although there is some distance to go on the gender pay gap. But I hope my story inspires others to follow their dreams and work hard to create something.” www.clinogen.com. Tel: 01628 674 644. email: enquiry@clinogen.com. “Scientific studies have shown that HA fillers can stimulate the formation of heathy skin tissue and new collagen”
Dermal Fillers: Friend or Foe?
Cosmetic specialist, Dr Peter Forrester answers some questions and clears up some misunderstandings about dermal filers. What are dermal fillers?
Are dermal fillers safe?
The term Dermal Filler refers to a group of injectable clear gels designed to lift and plump skin. They are commonly based on hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in many body tissues including the skin where it has important functions maintaining structure and hydration. HA binds to water in the skin, locking in moisture. As we get older the amount of hyaluronic acid in skin gradually diminishes which in part is responsible for many of the appearances of skin ageing.
Restylane was the first HA filler and has been in use for over 20 years. Since introduction HA filers have been used tens of millions of times. Hence, we now know a great deal about both their benefits and safety. Because the HA in fillers is very similar to the HA that exits naturally under the skin they are very well tolerated with a minimal chance of allergic reactions. Infrequently inflammatory reactions can occur resulting in areas swelling or firmness. These usually settle without treatment but can be resolved by the use of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves HA. It should be stressed that in the right hands dermal fillers are very safe. They should only be used by properly qualified and experienced healthcare professionals.
Will it be obvious that I have had a filler treatment or will I look pumped up? Images in the media of hugely plumped lips and cheeks and the so-called trout-pout have given HA dermal fillers an undeservedly bad reputation. Correctly used they will result in a natural and rejuvenating appearance with no risk of an over-treated look. The paradox of filler treatments is this, when they are obviously over-done everybody notices but when properly used the results are subtle. People see the ‘bad’ ones but don’t notice the ‘good’ ones – this leads to a belief that all filler treatments will produce a bad result.
What areas can be treated with fillers? Fillers can be used to: • replace lost volume in cheeks and lips • reduce deep and fine surface lines including smokers lines around the mouth • lift the jowls • stimulate and hydrate the skin
How long do HA fillers last? Injected hyaluronic acid is slowly broken down in the body. The beneficial effects of a treatment can be expected to last for up to 12 months. However, this will depend on a number of factors including patient age, area treated, quantity of filler injected, skin quality, general health and lifestyle including smoking. It was once believed that once all the hyaluronic acid had been broken down it would have no further benefit. However scientific studies have shown that HA fillers can stimulate the formation of heathy skin tissue and new collagen. This boost to the body’s own collagen may help to explain why smaller volumes of filler are often required during top up treatments and why some people seem to derive significant benefit for 18 months or longer.

FRESHEN UP
The fragrance industry is evolving rapidly, reports Katie Wright.
YOUR FRAGRANCE
O
f all the sectors of the beauty industry, fine fragrance might seem relatively unchanging compared to, say, make-up, where products and trends come and go in the blink of an eye. There may be thousands of new perfumes and colognes launched every year, but the vast majority come in the same old format: A bottle of (usually very expensive) scented liquid. Right? Actually, perfumery is going through a period of rapid change, with established makers responding to the changing needs and desires of the modern customer, and a host of digital-native brands cropping up offering an innovative route to discovering your next favourite fragrance. “People don’t want to smell the same as everyone else anymore,” says Tara Derakshan, co-founder of subscription service Sniph, which sends subscribers a new perfume from a niche brand to try each month, either 4ml for £9 or 8ml for £14 (which is then discounted if you choose to buy a bottle). “Bespoke is becoming a trend and you want to build your own identity with your own unique smell.” Ready for a whiff of what’s to come? Here are five fresh ways to experience fragrance...
90 SEPTEMBER 2018
Hair fragrance If you want your perfume to last longer, you shouldn’t limit your spritzes to your neck and wrists, says Nathalie Lorson, the perfumer behind new Jimmy Choo Fever. “Long hair is very good, because the hair keeps the fragrance very well. When you move, if you have long hair, it gives you a lot of ‘train’,” she says, meaning the cloud of perfume that lingers in your wake. A new wave of mists, oils and even dry shampoo make it easy to scent your strands and catch that train. Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin Body & Hair Oil, £42 for 100ml; YSL Mon Paris Hair Mist, £35 for 30ml, Fabled; Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Scented Hair Mist, £65 for 70ml, Selfridges; Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose Dry Shampoo, £25 for 150ml, House of Fraser
Digital services Looking for your next signature scent? A variety of subscription services now offer an accessible way to test a perfume before deciding whether to invest in a full-size version. “It’s super-hard to try fragrances in the shop - your nose can’t do more than five. And also, what you think smells good at first sniff may not smell good on your skin,” explains Derakshan. “We think you need a month to really wear it and decide, ‘Do I love it? Do people react to it? How does my skin project it? Does it empower me? Does it make me feel happy?’” Scent Addict is a similar service but it’s all about big-name designer perfumes, while Secret Scent Box delivers three mystery samples a month. While monthly services offer a curated collection, Hermetica is the first digitally-focused producer, using an online personality quiz to determine which of its 13 eau de parfums is right for you. I was sceptical but amazingly, after answering a series of abstract questions like, ‘When do you daydream?’ and ‘What’s your sweet escape?’ I was told Source1 - which contains my absolute favourite fragrance note, amber - was my ideal match, and when it arrived, it was love and first sniff. Hermetica Source1 Eau de Parfum, £155 for 100ml
Perfume pens and brushes Following last year’s world-first from Jo Loves paintbrushes that encapsulate a scented gel to paint on your pulse points - we’ve seen an explosion in alternative methods of application, particularly those designed with portability in mind. YSL has taken the click-and-dab pen that fans of Touche
Eclat concealer will instantly recognise, and filled it with Black Opium. Thierry Mugler has created a Perfuming Pencil available in three bestselling scents (Alien, Angel and Aura), while Juicy Couture offers a dual-ended rollerball the size of a lipgloss. YSL Black Opium Click Eau de Parfum, £29 for 2g, The Perfume Shop; Thierry Mugler Alien Perfuming Pencil, £26 for 3ml, The Perfume Shop; Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy Glace Eau de Parfum Rollerball, £7.99 for 10ml, The Perfume Shop
Solid perfume Also handy for popping in your purse or avoiding airport liquid limitations, solid perfumes are great for topping up on the go. Glossier’s hugely popular You scent has been reimagined in a cute pink pebble-shaped holder, and Diptyque’s beautiful floral composition Eau Rose, is available in a chic black compact. Glossier You Solid Perfume, £19 for 4g; Diptyque Limited Edition Eau Rose Solid Perfume, £34 for 3.6g
Body sprays
We think you need a month to really wear it and decide, ‘Do I love it?
OK this is actually more of a comeback than a futuristic innovation, but where Jo Loves leads, other brands often follow, so we think this is the revival of every Nineties teen’s favourite way to wear fragrance. Jo Loves Graffiti Art collection comprises aerosol can versions of four single-note varieties - Fig, Grapefuit, Tuberose and Vetiver - so you can layer with other products to create a longlasting scent that’s uniquely yours. ed up of annoying sweat patches when wearing your designer shirts? Feeling conscious about the associated odour issue, preventing you from feeling your best and using all your expensive eau de toilette to mask? Antiperspirants not working and only staining your clothes instead? Whether you are delivering an office presentation, company pitch, putting your point across in a team meeting, or even just heading to an event, excessive sweating can get you down and play on any social anxieties. Fortunately, there is an option available to reduce these symptoms and even stop them completely. One of the quickest ways to treat this excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, non-surgically is by using cosmetic injections with Botulinum toxin, also known as Botox. This treatment targets the area of excessive sweating to provide relief from symptoms for anywhere between 3-6 months. Several injections are performed to the problem area using a very fine needle. Over a two-week period, you can find that you do not sweat nearly as much as before or even do not sweat at all. This can be life changing for individuals distressed by their hyperhidrosis and related aesthetic symptoms. At Clinic@ we offer treatments for excessive sweating. NICK GENTRY and SEO YOUNG-DEOK Human Connection 14 - 28 September 2018
O
pera Gallery is proud to present Human Connection, a joint exhibition featuring the acclaimed artists Nick Gentry (UK) and Seo Young-Deok (South Korea). Both artists share an affinity with creating figurative works from found objects; Nick paints portraits on top of obsolete technological materials such as VHS cassettes and floppy disks that contain people’s memories, while Seo renders large-scale hyper-realistic sculptures of the human body from bicycle chains. The exhibition will feature Nick Gentry’s portraits of women painted onto floppy disks and fragmented CDs. The once iconic and recognisable forms (CDs) are shattered into thousands of tiny fragments. The resin glues the segments together and suspends these pieces in a holographic freezeframe of time. Nick uses obsolete materials to put them back in the spotlight, so we can comprehend how quickly technology is progressing. Nick Gentry’s materials are sourced directly from members of the public in a ‘social art’ project. This open working practice is a fundamental starting point of each of his new works and allows for shared histories to become part of a collective identity. Seo’s sculptures deliver epic narrations of humanity and modernity where stories are only inferred by the mere expressions of their bodies rather than the context of their surroundings. Seo’s

work is mainly concerned with the fragmented world we live in, especially capturing the anxieties of the younger generation. This is embodied in a series of sculptures with torn limbs and viscerally burned human torsos that reflects the pain, suffering and decay from the experience of his family’s generation working in Korea’s industrialisation era. Seo’s use of iron bicycle chains is a link to the material that has been critical to the development of the modern world and Korea’s manufacturing industry. Aston Matthews opens its first new showroom for 195 years in Guildford L ong established bathroom specialist Aston Matthews has opened a spacious new showroom in Guildford. Located on Chertsey Street the new showroom offers a wide array of fittings for both the traditional and contemporary bathroom, displayed across two floors. Aston Matthews was founded in 1823 and in its long 195-year history it has only had one showroom, in Islington, London, however the brand is known nationally, thanks to a successful e-commerce site, and has a loyal following with individual customers, architects and interior designers. Whether you are completely remodelling the family bathroom, or just want to update your taps, the new Guildford showroom is worth a visit. It covers 1600 sq ft on the ground floor with a further 1000 sq ft upstairs and friendly experienced staff are on hand to help you select the right products for your home. Over 2000 superior quality bathroom fittings at the best possible prices are arranged throughout the showroom, presented both as individual items and in lifestyle settings created to inspire customers. There is everything available for the traditional bathroom from cast iron baths to brass taps and pedestal basins plus matching accessories. But if your taste is more contemporary you may prefer the wall hung basins, sleek chrome or black showers and minimal bathroom cabinets. Industrial style bathrooms are a popular design trend and Aston Matthews has this covered too with the Grid (Crittall inspired) shower screen, new Astonian Index taps and shower fittings or the handsome Brunel bath with rivet details. The Aston Matthews bathroom showroom, previously occupied by Cath Kidston, is in a 300-year-old building with many interesting architectural features including sash windows and painted brick walls which set off the bathroom fittings perfectly and Aston Matthews has added two customer toilets fitted out with contrasting

products, one using a traditional WC and basin the other more contemporary. There is also a large meeting table in a bright corner of the showroom where customers can take time to discuss their plans with one of the team. If you are not able to visit the showroom you can still shop online. Aston Matthews is rightly proud of its user-friendly website which has been praised in the national media. Katrina Burroughs in the Sunday Times said, “Bathroom websites are generally infuriating. Aimed at plumbers they employ mysterious terminology or make a secret of prices. How hard can it be to sell us bathrooms in plain English? Not hard at all, as proved by the revamped Aston Matthews site. It’s well worth a look.” It may have taken Aston Matthews 195 years to reach Surrey, but perhaps quality is just worth waiting for. Find out more at: www.astonmatthews.co.uk

Chestnut has been in our collection for a while now, but we’re returning to it this season because it’s exactly the right shade to go with our new Rust-coloured textiles. It’s certainly bold, but warm and subtle too, so it’s never going to feel overpowering. Paint it on every wall; it’s a colour that’s all about cosiness.
The perfect pairing Walnut is an almost-black shade of brown that’s as full of depth as Chestnut, but cooler in tone for a little balance. a stairway. If you have bare wooden stairs, consider painting each step a different shade of the same colour or have fun with stencils to create patterns or words.
LET THE LIGHT IN Hallways can often be dark, so getting the lighting right is essential. If you have a high ceiling, a large pendant light will act as a beautiful centrepiece and be the first thing that people see when they enter your home. If the ceiling is low, pendant lights will have the effect of making the room feel smaller, so wall lights are the better option. Mirrors are a good way to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space. A large mirror placed at the end of a hallway instantly provides depth, making a hallway feel larger.
E
ntrance ways tend to be dark and narrow but painting them white isn’t necessarily the best option. “Hallways, especially busy family ones, can take a lot of wear of tear and white be very unforgiving, as well as cold, so a better option, is to choose a light, bright colour in a warm tone. Choose a colour that is a shade or two lighter than the main room the hallway leads to, and it will help create continuity between the two spaces. As this room is primarily a walkthrough, you can afford to make a strong design statement and be bold with colour and pattern. Patterned wallpaper with a slight shine will help reflect the light, while vertical stripes can create the illusion of height. If you’re concerned about knocks and scratches, a practical option is to have painted wood panelling on the bottom of the wall, with statement wallpaper above.
FEATURE FLOORING Flooring in a hallway needs to be durable but choose wisely and you can create impact while being practical too. If you have a particularly long and narrow hallway, a chequerboard effect on the floor will create the impression of width - the wider the tiles, the wider it will look. Hallway runners are a great way to inject colour, while colourful striped carpet will instantly enliven 108 SEPTEMBER 2018
STORAGE SOLUTIONS
“As this room is primarily a walkthrough, you can afford to make a strong design statement and be bold with colour and pattern”
Hallways can easily become cluttered so finding a space for coats, keys and shoes is a must. A wooden bench with storage If you have room, offers storage as well as a useful seating area. The more floor space you can see, the larger your hallway will seem and there are lots of great wall-hung cupboards available.
MAKE A FEATURE Hallways may be small but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a stunning focal point. A narrow console table with a pair of lamps and mirror above makes a pretty focal point - while a vase of fresh flowers or a scented cinnamon candle will create an inviting aroma. A group of family portraits is another great way to add interest and personalise the space. Generally, it’s best to hang fewer, larger pictures as opposed to several smaller ones, as it can make the space seem more confined and cluttered. With a little imagination and the right colours, storage and lighting, you can create an inviting entrance you’ll love coming home to and will want to show of.

Home Swimming Pools - The Hidden Truth W
hen considering the benefits of a home swimming pool, the advantages to physical health and fitness are often first to spring to mind. While indeed contributing to a healthy lifestyle, the positive effects a home swimming has on daily life goes far beyond the physical. Origin, the UK’s longest established swimming pool company, has been designing and building swimming pools in homes for over 35 years. In this time, the firm has spoken to hundreds of satisfied customers and compiled a catalogue of case studies to help understand how the addition of a home swimming pool benefits family life. These studies revealed that, while rarely considered, the emotional advantages of swimming at home are just as significant as the physical, fitness-related benefits.
Increasing the quality of family time Losing touch with family members is a problem experienced nationwide, as it becomes more and more difficult to organise get-togethers with relatives. The ability to bring families back together and instigate the spending of more quality time as a group is just one of the hidden benefits of home

swimming pools. This is certainly the experience of Buckinghamshire-based couple Peter and Christine. While restoring their 14th century manor farmhouse, the couple’s love of swimming prompted them to build an indoor swimming pool in their garden. Their decision was made in the hope of bringing all the family to the house and becoming a space for the group to enjoy. After research into various swimming pool contractors, they chose Origin to design, build and manage the project. Once completed, the pool succeeded in becoming a focal point for family meet ups and gatherings. “We have three grandchildren, three daughters and their partners. They come over every weekend, sometimes all at once, and whenever they are here they all pile into the pool.” Family time is now a regular part of the couple’s life, and they enjoy spending time in the pool with their friends and relatives every week.
Encouraging positive mental wellbeing and relaxation A home pool can also encourage positive wellbeing. The addition of a pool creates a place for relaxation, and somewhere homeowners can spend time unwinding. This was experienced first-hand by Michelle and Paul Green when they extended their new house to include a bespoke Origin swimming pool. Discussing his wife’s use of the pool, Paul comments: “She uses it for leisure. It’s a very pleasant space to relax and enjoy activities such as having a drink and reading a book.” The couple now see the pool as more than just a fitness facility. They treat the pool as an extension
of their home, and as a peaceful place to wind down.
Improving the work/life balance As the popularity of flexible working rises, many professionals still struggle to balance their personal lives with their jobs. Work can easily take control, leaving little time for leisure. Bringing a swimming pool into the home can help family and personal life regain some importance. A couple who personally experienced this rebalance were Ian and Michelle Scott. Prior to building their bespoke Origin swimming pool and pool house, Michelle really struggled to balance her time, as work dominated her life. Ian explained: “She would often get home late after a full day’s work and not have the time or energy to head off to the gym.” However, now she manages to balance her life much more efficiently. “We noticed that when we were on holiday we would both get up early and start our day with a morning swim which was great! We’ve now brought this luxury into our home and it has enabled both of us to improve our fitness every day before work.”
“When we were on holiday we would both get up early and start our day with a morning swim which was great! We’ve now brought this luxury into our home”
decided on building her own swimming pool after enjoying the luxury of her father’s pool in the south of France. She had always loved swimming, yet her busy working life meant free time was at an absolute minimum. “The only exercise I really enjoy is swimming and I often don’t have time to go to a gym because I work 12-hour days.” The project took six months and now completed allows Sarah to make the most of her free time. What was once a jam-packed routine without room for exercise, now includes daily swimming and relaxing in the pool. “It’s definitely changed my routine for the better, I’m swimming every day before I head off to work which makes me feel enriched and energised.” www.originpools.co.uk
Giving the daily routine an overhaul for the better Bringing a swimming pool into the home also creates an opportunity for huge improvements to daily routines. Rather than be marshalled into a lack of exercise and leisure by work, it is possible to overhaul an overly ordered lifestyle. Sarah Taylor, Essex-based Origin customer, SEPTEMBER 2018 113

ORLA KIELY: ‘Colour and print can lift your spirits like nothing else’
No one knows pattern like Orla Kiely. Gabrielle Fagan catches up with the designer to find out how it can make you happy. Noticing, coincides with a major exhibition, Orla Kiely: A Life In Pattern, at The Fashion and Textile Museum, London, until September 23, 2018.
The designer reveals how it all began, her inspirations, and her tips on decorating the Orla Kiely way... What first inspired your designs? “Growing up just outside Dublin, I was aware of nature and I loved art at school. I’d always wanted to do fashion at art college - my sewing machine was my most treasured possession - until I discovered the option of printed textiles. “As a student, I was very drawn to architecture, which influenced my earliest print designs, the strong geometric lines dictating how the pattern would work was something I loved. These early influences are still there, often informing the structure of repeats throughout.”
O
rla Kiely’s renowned globally as the Queen of Prints - and it’s a welldeserved title. The Irish-born motherof-two, who began by designing hats and handbags in the early Nineties, has seen her retro motifs - most famously stems and pears adorn everything from housewares to wallpaper and clothes. 114 SEPTEMBER 2018
How did your business begin? “If I am ever asked when we first started our label, I think back to working at my kitchen table, designing handbags with Robert, our baby son, on my lap. I had a full-time position as a print designer in the fashion industry on a freelance contract, so those moments were usually after work on the weekend. “We lived in a purpose-built, first floor Victorian flat, which doubled up as a design studio, office and distribution centre, where boxes of stock were delivered and turned around while I was at work. “Every day, my husband, Dermott, who had the business skills and entrepreneurial tendencies, would do all the jobs a strong team would normally do, in an office shared with Robert and his toys. “We financed it ourselves from day one and

our lives were invested. Our second son, Hamish, was born - and nothing could have been more motivating than our two little boys depending on us for their all.” Where do you get your ideas from today? “Nature’s a great source of pattern ideas. My personal take on nature has always been more abstract and graphic. I absorb inspiration in my travels, reading books, films, going to exhibitions, it never stops. Everyday objects inspire too, they can be interestingly random, which I love. I’ll spot something and store it away for the right moment.” How would you describe your work? “It’s clean, controlled and orderly. It has a strong, bold graphic style, where colour plays along. As a design company, we’re always drawn to modernist/ mid-century design and print. This has informed all aspects of our product, from the ready-to-wear collections, fragrance, beauty, handbags, watches, jewellery, homeware, wallpapers and more. “Our style will always remain quite Sixties and Seventies, but our colours and prints continue to evolve - and we’re always open to off-piste influences for a quirky twist.” What’s your favourite design? “I can’t help but say Stem, the simple organic leaf motif. The idea arrived as an inspiration while developing new print designs back in 2000. It was, as all good things often are, a very quick sketch. It has, for some reason, touched many people throughout the world, and became the seed from which our brand flourished. “I always think it’s serendipitous, as it so resembles a rowan branch, and Rowan is the family name of my husband and children. It’s proved to be very versatile and has morphed into an array of different variations - I always get excited by the newest iterations.” How would you describe your own home decor? “My home is Victorian with a very mid-century aesthetic, original features, cornices, high ceilings and fireplaces. I’ve combined vintage furniture found in fairs and second-hand furniture stores with products we’ve made. “Growing up in Ireland has had a big influence on my taste for colour. My love for green, from moss to seaweed, the greys and browns of those rainy Irish skies, the mustard and orange of the wildflowers found on the roadside, have become my palette. I mix these with some other bright pops of colour, like pink and yellow. “Our patterns are present in every room, whether it’s a printed cushion, wallpaper or ceramic, an element of my work will be there. In the kitchen, our tableware adds something special at dinner times, and our towels in the bathrooms add that extra colour and pattern to everyday life.” 116 SEPTEMBER 2018
A Life in Pattern: And How It Can Make You Happy Without You Even Noticing by Orla Kiely, is published by Conran Octopus, priced £25. Available now.
How do people create a successful interior? “Consider the space and light of the room. Think of those colours that you love the most. Research design eras you love, visit flea markets, vintage fairs and off-beat stores. Find a piece you love - this could be a couch, a table, a light - be open minded. These objects can inspire and set the tone of where the other rooms can follow. I like to commit to an idea and don’t water it down. Colour and print are very important, it can lift your spirits like nothing else. Most of all, don’t be afraid. “People have embraced more and more the expression of individualism throughout home interiors. Customers now, will wallpaper entire rooms in our prints and are much more fearless with how they mix their colours.”

Create a Mediterranean Style Garden
offers ways to bring a touch of the Med to your own garden
Hannah Stephenson
S
o, we’re having a Mediterranean summer, with long, sunny days and hot, balmy nights - perfect for enjoying evenings in the garden. Those with fast-draining or sandy soil may be in an ideal spot to create their own Mediterranean haven, going with gravel, tiles or paving to make a courtyard-style space rather than focusing on a water-guzzling lawn. So, how can you get that Mediterranean feel?
Use terracotta planters Think bright pink or red trailing geraniums tumbling over old terracotta or stone pots, or if you’ve limited space, attach some smaller terracotta planters to a south-facing wall and fill them with trailing drought-lovers which won’t need endless watering. Alternatively, make a feature out of huge Grecian urns strategically placed in borders or as stand-alone features at the end of walkways or in the centre of small courtyards. Permanent planters in the Mediterranean garden can also save you time, whether it be agapanthus or hardy evergreen
herbs. If you situate them on gravel, plunge the base of each container a few centimetres into the gravel, which will encourage plants to root through into the soil underneath as well as keeping your pot stable. If you have space - and somewhere to house them in winter, such as a conservatory consider growing a pot of citrus such as lemons, to add a Mediterranean feel and scent. You can grow dazzling bougainvillea in containers and bring it outside every summer, from early June to late September, then move it to a frost-free conservatory for winter.
Consider gravel or cool tiles Gravel gardens are commonplace in the Mediterranean and in this country the gravel surface acts as a permanent mulch which will help prevent seed seedlings and conserves moisture. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot and prepare the soil, raking it level and then spreading 5cm (2in) gravel over the surface. Plant sparingly - don’t smother the gravel surface with plants. They can be placed here and there and perhaps embellished with stone or terracotta planters or an old wooden or stone bench. Avoid bedding plants which are too thirsty. Instead, grow exotic-looking shrubs such as phormium and olearia or grasses with silvery leaves, as well as ground cover such as sedum and thyme.
Incorporate water Water creates cool relief in hot countries and can be used not only to provide movement, but also reflective value. Stone fountains are a big feature of many Mediterranean gardens but at home, consider your surroundings. If you have plenty of room, you might go for an ornate tiered structure, providing a cool cascade of water which you can run your hands through. With less space you might go for 120 SEPTEMBER 2018
still water in a terracotta storage jar or a lined stone trough.
Create shade Any Mediterranean garden worth its salt should offer shade during the heat of the day. Consider how you are going to achieve that naturally. Perhaps grow climbers that love heat, such as grapevine and trumpet vine, over a pergola with traditional seating underneath.
Use drought-tolerant plants Peter Jones, garden manager for Hardy Ornamental (which include the Mediterranean terraces at RHS Garden Wisley) suggests cistus (rock rose), a lovely family of shrubs ideal for a hot sunny position, which will form mounds of green foliage and a profusion of simple flowers, from whites to deep pink. Other great plants which will thrive in long hot summers include lavender, while for architectural value consider Cupressus sempervirens (Pencil Cypress) one of the archetypal Mediterranean trees, which grows to produce a tall slender green pillar of evergreen interest, perfect for that Med look. Lagerstroemia indica (Crepe myrtle), which is rarely grown in the UK but quite suited to our climate, is a multi stemmed shrub/ small tree with beautiful bark and glossy green foliage producing a profusion of crepe paper like flowers in colours from light pink to deep burgundy. Another alternative is the pomegranate tree (Punica granatum), which originated in the region extending from modern day Iran through Afghanistan and Pakistan to northern India, and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region. This architectural small tree can make a fun alternative to an olive, with larger specimens having very characterful form. Palms such as Trachycarpus fortunei also add that touch of Riviera glamour.
Don’t forget succulents Cacti and succulents are regular features in the Mediterranean garden, growing out of old stone walls and rockwork. If you have a gravel gap between your house and your paving, a strip of sempervivums or other succulents will soften the line beautifully.
Use simple decor Once you are surrounded by terracotta and old stone or tile landscaping, you don’t really want contemporary, shiny furniture. Choose simple wooden benches or seats which will weather with age, to fit with the look. And grow herbs such as thyme and oregano near seating areas, which will smell delicious as well as add to the flavour of the food you serve your guests. SEPTEMBER 2018 121

Tiny Houses creating big memories! Mark Burton

A
s a child I grew up in an amazing space. An old hunting lodge in Virginia Water which was tucked away in the middle on a forest surrounded by 400 acres of trees we called “The Woods”. From a very young age, building camps and tree houses was almost an obsession, every project became more and more challenging with bigger and better ideas. Unfortunately my summer time hobby came to an abrupt end the day my grandmother found one of her dining room chairs up a tree along with other items from around the house which had seemed to have simply “Gone missing!” Last summer I went back to my childhood home to see if my first tree house was still standing and to my amazement... there she was. Unfortunately, half the roof was missing and the floor had long since rotted but the main structure was still “more or less” intact. Seeing it brought back so many memories of the times my mates and I had. The summer evenings up in the den eating chocolate biscuits which I seem to remember was the entry fee. Sitting round a camp fire cooking sausages on sticks, toasting marshmallows and telling scary stories. It was like a home from home. Having a background of building Extensions, Loft Conversions and Refurbishments I gained a huge amount of knowledge in structural methods which is paramount for any garden building project. Every property had its own set of challenges with clients wanting bigger and better dreams for their homes. Although the building trade was rewarding, the competition in this field was 122 SEPTEMBER 2018

One thing was for sure, I had to” think outside the box” so I swapped career and moved into the Bespoke/Custom Built Garden Building business. In 2012, I won an award for my achievements (Shedworking Best Design Award 2012) for my new “Tiny House” on wheels design. My Tiny House concept is receiving a huge amount of interest from Blogs, Newspapers and TV including The One Show, Grand Designs, George Clarkes Amazing Spaces, Gadget Man and many others. Most of the interest from the media came due to some wacky, one off designs which had a creative edge to them and WOW factor. Its quite surprising how even a small writers hut could warrant a three page spread in The Guardian and a mobile Pixie style cabin would be of interest to Channel 5 news, Sky news and Chanel Four’s “Shed of the Year competition” which we were finalists. Green Oak Rules the Waves C
H
earts of oak are our ships… and more and more green oak is becoming the natural material of choice for those wishing to enhance their homes. Oak was the timber used when the earliest Royal Navy ships ruled the waves. Official figures show that in 1707 there were just 12,476 oak trees remaining fit for shipbuilding in the New Forest compared with 123,927 a century before. But now there are sustainable plantations in Europe with France in particular having exceptionally well managed forests boasting as much as 524 million cubic meters of standing oak, which is culled at a rate of 1% per year and re-generates at a rate of 2%. Green oak is fast becoming one of the ecologically sound materials for attractive modern day home construction - whether it is for new build or erecting amazing new spaces and extensions. Helen Flavell had already completed her design - working with C7 Architects of Guildford. She wanted a design and build brief for the conversion of her 16th Century cottage with a large new extension. Typically dark inside the cottage, she wanted lots of glass and green oak for the new environment of the extension, but at the same time enhancing the old cottage. After attending a party where the building was formed with an oak frame, she called her architect and asked them to incorporate an oak frame into the design. C7 approached Living Oak of Cobham, Surrey, bespoke oak specialists who promise “a building which will stir your emotions from the first time you enter”. Living Oak designed the oak frame to form the main structure of the new space using 31 tonnes of green oak. Helen knew that she wanted that perfect combination and balance with the beautiful oak components and state of the art glass. What she

got was a magnificent 240 sqm of additional space to create a new kitchen, dining room, master bedroom with en-suite and covered walkway with a double garage and accommodation over. This was in addition to the 180 sqm in the former cottage, providing the best of two architectural worlds - the character and feel of the cottage blending smoothly into the state of the art extension, with a light and warm home fit for the 21st Century. Living Oak pride themselves on their Biophilic design ethos – biophillicdesign.net - and now has many clients who give testament to the tangible wellbeing benefits that their buildings have provided to them. And if the Royal Navy’s hearts of oak are anything to go by, Helen’s green oak masterpiece should be with us for many more centuries to come.
