Her signature mesmerizing patterns mimic the vivid diversity of nature, but are not painted on. Using a lamination method, the patterns are meticulously prepared by repeated cutting and layering of porcelain sheets. Her hands-on approach ensures every pattern is unique and unrepeatable. Being creative and technically minded, Mandy continues to develop the skills needed to overcome the combined challenges of the natural fragility of porcelain, the complex lamination method, and the

Wheels in Motion H
7-10 september 2017
eritage Open Days have gradually become popular throughout the country. Surrey is no exception and this year Mole Valley District Council is promoting them with the theme “Wheels in Motion”. From Victorian times right up to modern times the train and the omnibus have vied with each other to become the most economical wheeled conveyance of choice for the average citizen, whether travelling to work, or enjoying leisure pursuits during the first paid Bank Holidays, and then progressively annual leave up to today’s statutory paid holiday. It is difficult to imagine what life was like over a century ago, but one aid to this is the sight of a gaily painted antique horse drawn garden seated omnibus travelling through the Surrey countryside as they would have done from Victorian times right up to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, when most able bodied horses were requisitioned for the war effort, whether for agriculture at home, or for transport to the battle front. During the four Heritage Open Days, just such a horse bus will again be taking to the roads. Found in a field in the District in 1973, it was and lovingly restored over six years to its former glory by Tony and Christopher Drewitt. You may have seen it before. It is frequently featured in the annual Lord Mayor’s Show with takes place each November in the City of London. If you have not seen it, you can take this opportunity to photograph it, in parts of the district which have changed little over the past hundred years and more. It displays original antique enamel advertising plaques, although sadly, Hudson’s soap

and Moir’s jams are no more. From 7th to 10th September, it will travel from Faygate, through Rusper, Newdigate, Leigh, Betchworth, Mickleham, and Dorking to Leatherhead stopping on display at the towns of Dorking and Leatherhead. For a detailed timetable visit www.heritageopendays.org. uk, or www.molevalley.gov.uk, or pick up a guide book in local libraries and the Council offices. This bus was built by the London General Omnibus Company Limited to be exhibited as an example of the finest coach building in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. After service in London, it was sold to a Mr Wickens in Redhill, who in turn sold it to Mr Swift, landlord of the Three Tuns tavern in Dorking High Street, and finally it passed to Daniel Fairbrother, owner of the Windmill pub in Flint Hill, Dorking. So it is likely that during the Heritage Days, it will be travelling over some of the same roads, over which it used to travel over a century ago. Certainly it was present when the Dorking war memorial was unveiled in 1921, and at the Queen Mothers 100th Birthday Parade. Surprisingly, although it was painstakingly restored using authentic materials, the horse bus complies with modern health and safety requirements. For a few miles each day, it will be possible for a lucky few to travel on or in the horse bus, as it moves from village to village and on into the towns. However the bus has only sixteen seats, so it will be no use hailing it to get on when it stops outside an ancient hostelry for refreshment. Would be passengers will have to book in advance with Drewitts Carriages. First come, first served. To book ring 07788 810204.

O
ne of the Mediterranean’s best kept secrets, the Sardinian city of Olbia beholds a seductive allure for travellers wishing to avoid the hustle and bustle of prime summer destinations in Europe. While this island retreat remains a little-known haven, those who do frequent its shores are a well-heeled crowd, indeed. And with an abundance of pristine beaches, world class restaurants, water sports and activities, you certainly won’t be short on things to do in Olbia this summer!
Duration: 2h 25m Price: £237 on average By Private Jet: For those looking for a truly indulgent experience, we recommend JetClass, a new service that is offering private jet seats for similar prices to business class tickets. How To Get There
Hotel Abi d’Oru: The beautiful Hotel Abi
Partly responsible for the city’s seclusion is the limited transport links. However, there are tricks you can employ to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. By Ferry: There are various ferry companies who travel to and from Olbia, mostly leaving from Civitavecchia in Italy. The catch? Depending on the time of year, the ferry only runs up to 7 times a week and the journey may take over 8 hours in some cases - so be sure to check in advance and pack the Scrabble board! Duration: Up to 8hr 15mins Price: Around £250 on average By Plane: While flying by plane significantly decreases your journey time (it takes about two and a half hours to get from London to Olbia), they’re still relatively hard to come by. Because of the reduced frequency of commercial airlines that fly to this destination, airfares in August average at around £237.
d’Oru offers beachside glamour, seclusion and sunshine. With its very own private stretch of sand, guests at the Hotel Abi d’Oru can take full advantage of the Emerald Coast’s beauty. Activities include golf, tennis and watersports, but if you’re after indulgence, we suggest cocktails and a dining experience in one of the hotel’s four restaurants. Cala di Volpe: A little way north of Olbia, the Cala di Volpe offers everything from single rooms to penthouse suites. Guests can enjoy cocktails and live piano performances at the hotel restaurant, or venture outside to the laid-back luxe of the Il Pontile Bar.

This fun and vibrant club provides panoramic sea views, fine dining, music and shisha, guaranteeing a wild night. P
lus One Gallery is the UK’s leading specialist in Hyperrealist Art, dedicated to the development and promotion of British and international contemporary Hyperrealist Art. The gallery maintains a high standard of painters and sculptors, representing a number of Masters within the field, alongside an array of emerging artists. The international body of artists represented at Plus One Gallery also includes two winners of the prestigious BP Portrait Award; Andrew Tift and Craig Wylie and Jan Mikulka who won the BP Visitors choice in 2011. Upcoming exhibitions include the Autumn Show which opens to the public on 20th September, this exhibition will feature new paintings from a selection of represented artists and will run until 4th November. From 8th November, we will hold a solo exhibition for Spanish artist Javier Banegas, this show will include many new paintings based around his specific subject matter. He is known for producing close-up still life depictions of items, that have been altered by the presence of humans. He explores the interaction with these items and, whether it is the shavings from a pencil or paint pots left without lids, gives the impression that someone, somewhere is not quite finished. The monumentality Banegas creates by enlarging objects, stimulates the viewer to appreciate the inner beauty and meaning of the mundane.

In December, we will exhibit the playful works of Volker Kuhn, be sure to visit this exhibition for an entertaining insight into the humorous artists mind! Kuhn pays tribute to many of the Masters within his 3D boxes as well as creating inventive scenes depicting all kinds of situations. A great show to squeeze in before the festive period.

aunching in September 2015, Richard Young Gallery features a studio where the public and invited celebrities are invited to walk in and have their portrait taken by the legendary celebrity photographer. Get the chance to feel like a celebrity yourself, as Richard shoots an entire roll of black and white film in 10 minutes! Clients receive three silver gelatin prints and the contact sheet of the images which are hand selected by Richard from each shoot. Gift Vouchers are also available. The perfect gift for the person who has everything. Prices start at £1800.00 per shoot. Richard comments “In 1979 I was commissioned by French Vogue and David Bailey’s Ritz Magazine to shoot Sir Ralph Richardson being photographed by Sir Cecil Beaton. I watched as his assistants set up the shoot. Finally the great man himself came out and took about 10 shots, and that was it. I was intrigued. I plucked up the courage. ‘Sir, I see you have only taken a few shots?’. He turned to me and retorted, ‘My dear boy, if you can’t get it in one roll of film it’s just not worth bothering!’ Richard Young is at the forefront of celebrity photography. With a career spanning 40 years, Richard’s exceptional eye and unique approach has cemented him as the most trusted and prolific contemporary photographer to the stars. As both a portraitist and photojournalist, his unerring ability to capture the moment and present a candid, inside view into the world of celebrity has resulted in iconic images that are celebrated in publications throughout the world.
Richard has photographed a diverse and distinguished range of famous celebrities, capturing some genuinely unique moments over the course of his career. He took the last photograph of Keith Moon at a party with Paul and Linda McCartney, just hours before he died. Richard visited orphanages in Romania with Michael Jackson, photographed Sting’s wedding to Trudie Styler and toured the country with the Sex Pistols. He has covered parties for the Cannes film festival and the Oscars in Los Angeles. He accompanied and documented United States troops in Iraq and Fidel Castro in Cuba. These examples are only a few of Richard’s diverse achievements, and are a mark of the trust and liking that he inspires in his subjects. With an archive of over 2 million images, Richard Young’s prolific body of work could easily serve as documentation of popular culture over the past 40 years.

LORD’S
The Home of Cricket
I
Lord’s has long been seen as the game’s spiritual ‘headquarters’. But its importance is not merely historical. In practice it remains, to this day, perhaps the most important single place in world cricket
ts owner, Marylebone Cricket Club, remains the guardian of both the Laws and the Spirit of Cricket, and MCC sides (which play around 500 games a year) perform a key role in promoting cricket - in Britain and elsewhere. In addition, Lord’s is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), as well as the European Cricket Council (ECC).It is also the setting for the state-ofthe-art MCC Cricket Academy, the unrivalled MCC Library and the world-famous MCC Museum. Above all, Lord’s is the setting for some ofthe best cricket in the world .It hosts Investec Test matches and NatWest-sponsored one-day internationals plus most of Middlesex’s home games, some historic fixtures (such as Oxford v Cambridge) and the village and club finals. The Lord’s 2017 fixture list is available to view on their website www.lords.org/fixtures/fixturesandtickets. There is a Tour of Lord’s where you will begin in the MCC Museum, home of the famous Ashes urn. The museum brings the fascinating story of cricket is to life. Paintings, photographs and artefacts, covering 400 years of cricket history, reveal the game’s development from a rural pastime to a modern, increasingly international sport. The museum also boasts bats, balls and kit donated by great players like Mahela Jayawardene, Glenn McGrath, Rahul Dravid, Paul Collingwood and Shane Warne -as well as from past greats such as

Victor Trumper, Jack Hobbs andDon Bradman. Additional attractions at Lord’s include the Tennis Court where Real Tennis, ‘the game of kings’ (famously enjoyed by King Henry VIII), is still played, and the MCC Cricket Academy - where many future Test and county stars hone their skills. Founded in the 1970s, it soon produced some of the world’s finest cricketers, including Sir Ian Botham, Martin Crowe and Angus Fraser. Regular users include Middlesex players, MCC’s Young Cricketers and international cricketers preparing to appear in major matches at Lord’s. Members of the public are welcome too. Facilities include a 19-yard run-up for bowlers, a variable speed bowling machine forbatsmen, two-way simultaneous video recording equipment, aSupergrasse playing surface - especially for cricket, a bar & coffeeshop for spectators (for tired players!) with coaching availablethroughout the year. SOCIAL DINING AT THE IVY
The recently opened Cobham Ivy is a welcome breath of fresh air and overnight has become the place to be seen. Philippa Hennessy soaks up the atmosphere at the stylish brasserie
N
othing beats dining alfresco on a balmy summer evening and nowhere better than the Cobham Ivy, the latest addition to the Ivy Collection’s chain of salubrious brasseries. Occupying a desirable, riverside position, the white lisianthus-lined entrance, as quintessentially English as it is, doesn’t quite prepare you for the extensive renovations that have taken place inside. Once home to La Capanna, and more recently La Rive, square footage has been increased to accommodate 180 covers, with semiprivate dining for 12 in the mezzanine area. Since its inaugural opening, the venue is the talk of the town and has been basking in rave reviews, attracting a steady stream of well-heeled Surreyites. If not for fine wine served from a six litre Methuselah bottle or the popular chicken milanese dish, the ambience is as good as any reason to make a reservation. It’s also an excuse to dress up, for the evening attire is rather Chelsea-esque, prime time for groups and couples to gather. Deep blue armchairs and caramel leather banquette-style seating create an intimate dining experience and the Arancia onyx bar is a statement in itself, with ornate glasses hanging over the counter – the perfect spot for before and after-dinner cocktails. Yet, perhaps the pièce de résistance is the charming orangery, with appealingly rustic touches; aquamarine throws draped over the chair backs, flickering candle light and an abundance

of scented flowers. From the menu, which is a smorgasbord of tempting dishes, my guest Lucy and I choose a few hors d’oeuvres to kick off proceedings; succulent green olives, perfectly seasoned Arborio rice balls and courgette fries with a zingy mint yoghurt. For starters, we share scallops on a bed of pea purée and tamarind glazed duck liver parfait with toasted brioche – both are exquisite. Washed down with palate-grabbing Whispering Angel Rose, I have high expectations for our mains. Lucy opts for Asian-inspired cod in banana leaf with a miso glaze which, paired with a glass of Chablis, gets her seal of approval and I choose today’s market special, lamb rump, complemented by a glass of Pinot Noir. Preferring my lamb a little pink, it’s more than medium rare but, the flavoursome, creamy herb mash and asparagus compensates for this. Dessert has to be the mouth-watering chocolate bombe and its presentation is executed with aplomb. You cannot help but love this feast of melting chocolate, vanilla ice cream, honeycomb and caramel sauce. And to finish, we indulge in the cheese plate and a taster of sweet Moscato d’Asti. All too soon, home beckons us, but not before we are proffered the remaining rosé from the Methuselah. It would be rude not to. Make your reservation at theivycobhambrasserie.com

efined as the ability to bounce back from adversity, resilience is the new ‘buzz word’ in education. Resilience is not something innate but a skill that can be learned under the guidance of trained and empathetic teachers. At Notre Dame Senior School we pride ourselves on our ability to nurture our girls whilst still maintaining excellent academic standards. In a society where examination focus detracts from the time spent building character and ensuring young people are equipped with the necessary skills such as self-belief and perseverance, resilience training becomes essential. At Notre Dame, we have in place a wide-reaching strategy to promote resilience and wellbeing across the school. This is what we call The Lestonnac Approach. The Lestonnac Approach enables resilience and wellbeing in our girls through well-established practices and initiatives. These include strategies for overcoming obstacles; fostering a ‘bounce back’ attitude to disappointment; and ultimately nurturing intrinsically self-motivated, adaptable young people. The leadership of our school is always looking for innovative ways to revisit, reinforce and review our consistently thorough practices. STRATEGIES AND INITIATIVES • Multi-layered pastoral support structure • Buddy system for new students and peer mentoring • PSHE resilience workshops on topics such as self-esteem, confidence, worry and anxiety, friendship, emotional wellbeing, dealing with failure positively • Mindfulness and reflection days • Relationship building strategies • Understanding boundaries and fair discipline • Planning and organisational strategies • Transition and taster days supporting the movement between Key Stages • Detailed and clear target setting and individual personal goal setting • Constructive marking of work, self-reflection and learning from mistakes • Positive achievement and reward system • Drop-in support sessions for core subjects • Revision support • Career mapping • Individual, one-to-one staff mentoring for GCSE and A-level students • Fostering hobbies, talents and new activities • Qualified external advisors and speakers • Focus on enjoyment in lessons and activities • A safe, healthy and secure environment

THE BENEFITS OF THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL W
ith options ranging from boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a school to suit each and every child. Here are some of the reasons why parents are choosing to give their children the unique experience of private school and why it’s worth the financial investment.
Enriched academic opportunities One of the accepted benefits of private schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate programme, just to
46 SEPTEMBER 2017
name a few. The IB programme focuses on school work and on developing you as a whole person. Private school students constantly score top marks on standardized tests and college entrance exams, and many schools have a 100 per cent rate of students attending their university of choice.
Controlled class sizes A comprehensive study on class size made by educational researchers Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests. The gains from smaller class sizes are stronger the longer a child is exposed to them. Private schools vary greatly in size, but depending on their teaching style,
almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.
Dedicated teachers In a study completed by the Fraser Institute in 2007, 91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school. Instructors are both qualified and passionate about their subjects, often holding advanced degrees in their field. Within the tight-knit school community, students have close relationships with their teachers who commonly act as role models. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.
Parental involvement Private schools are built around open communication between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.
A safe environment Private schools have reputations for maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower staff-to-student ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in post-secondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.
arts or clubs. This involvement helps stimulate students in their studies, as noted in a study at Stanford University that found that students involved in the arts are more motivated to learn and are three times more likely to win a school attendance award. Extracurricular activities can provide a much-needed break from the stresses of academics while developing skills and engaging in valuable social situations.
Development for today’s and tomorrow’s world Private schools go beyond offering the mandatory subjects required by provincial curriculum; they can offer students a wide range of specializations including arts programs, athletics, maths and science. Private schools are responsible for producing many leaders in politics, business and society, with a history of adapting quickly to changes in technology and culture. And today, they are also sought by parents of children with special needs such as behaviour problems or learning disabilities.
Ample resources At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.
Extracurricular activities While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a well-rounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, SEPTEMBER 2017 5

“Every child should be taught to cook in school, not just talk about nutrition all day. Good food can be made in 15 minutes. This could be the first generation where the kids teach the parents” – Jamie Oliver
T
eachers should never underestimate what a young child can achieve IF they are ‘hungry’ to learn. We are now more conscious than ever that we must make sound dietary choices if we are to sustain long-term health and wellbeing, and with the introduction of Food Technology in our Prep School curriculum, our boys and girls are able to develop a love for cooking by preparing food from a young age. First and foremost, it has to be fun, and everyone is encouraged to try new flavours, confirm the quality of their ingredients and love the thrill of tasting the finished work. There is nothing more satisfying than creating a tasty dish from scratch and sharing it with friends and family. Once a child has learned to follow a recipe, the world is their oyster (pardon the pun!); there is nothing they cannot accomplish on a culinary level. At grass roots level, these young people will progress to senior schools and beyond with a life skill: the ability to walk past the endless High Street fast food chains and choose something far more tasty and nutritious, made by their own fair hand. At St George’s School, Windsor Castle, the Food Technology curriculum is entirely practical based. From day one, the boys and girls learn to prepare their own food, developing competence when working with a variety of ingredients. An early focus on knife skills is key to their independence. While chopping and preparing the food they learn to ask questions: where does this ingredient
6 SEPTEMBER 2017
come from? How should we store it? What is its nutritional value? They learn to read food labels and understand the information they provide. Once the basic skills are in place, the focus shifts towards following a step-by-step recipe. Among the current favourites are curries, fajitas, vegetable rice and lamb koftas. We often sit down to eat the food as soon as it is cooked. THIS is the highlight for our boys and girls. We share the joy of eating delicious, fresh food, evaluating our achievements and sharing feedback. For children who, by nature, are a little less adventurous with food, this is a great opportunity to be brave and challenge themselves. Of course, it is not savoury food all the way. Nobody can call themselves an able cook until they can bake a birthday cake! Victoria sandwich is always a big hit with the children AND parents with the carrot cake muffins coming a close second. I have been staggered and delighted by the number of parents who have commented that their child’s eating habits have been transformed by learning to cook and Food Technology has become firmly established in the St George’s curriculum. Exciting New Building Plans taking place at Cranleigh Prep
S
et in 40 acres of stunning Surrey countryside, less than 50 minutes from London, Cranleigh Prep is thriving, with pupil numbers currently at an all-time high. The School has enjoyed outstanding national success on the sports’ front, winning nine national titles over the last five years. With national finalists in riding (1), hockey (3), netball (2), swimming (1), biathlon (1), triathlon (1), Fives (1) and climbing (1), as well as three county titles and two regional titles, 2017 has been an excellent year so far! The Creative Arts remain strong, with national acclaim
for ten musicians over the last two years, whilst both the art and drama departments continue to flourish. The 47 scholarships awarded in 2017 are a fitting testament to the wide range of success achieved in all areas of school life. Over the last three years, pupils have won 127 scholarships and awards to some of the country’s leading schools, including Brighton College, Cranleigh, Charterhouse, Eton, KCS Wimbledon, Marlborough, RGS Guildford, Tonbridge, Wellington and Winchester. Cranleigh Prep is currently in the middle of an exciting new building development: a two-storey
teaching block using natural wood finishes throughout. There will be three new Science labs, state of the art CDT and Food Tech areas, as well as a new parental hub, to be used for interaction between parents, pupils and staff. However, the teaching aspirations will not impact the size of the School, which will remain similar in numbers to retain its special family atmosphere where everyone knows each other. Privately Educated People Dominate Top British jobs
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

T
heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives. In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent
went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Why Heathfield is the right choice for ambitious girls with verve and spirit Boarding and day school for girls 11 – 18 years
H
appy confident girls succeed – that’s the simple but powerful philosophy at leading independent girls’ school Heathfield in Ascot, renowned for its outstanding pastoral care and impressive academic success. And it’s paying off - the school has achieved its best ever GCSE results in 2017, with 58% of students achieving A*-A and grades 7,8,9 in the new and significantly more demanding English GCSEs – an 11 per cent improvement on last year’s figures. The percentage of top grades (9s and A*s) overall is up from 17% to a sparkling 27% this year. At A level, eight in 10 girls (87%) achieved all A*-C grades in their A Level exams this summer, with more than half gaining all A*-B grades. Students achieved well in both academic and vocational subjects, gaining places at a diverse range of prestigious destinations – from leading Russell Group universities such as Edinburgh, Exeter, Newcastle and Warwick to acclaimed arts and drama colleges RADA and Central St Martins. “Heathfield celebrates talent and spirit so that everyone learns to be the best possible version of themselves - self-confident, resilient, articulate young women with ambition”, says head teacher Marina Gardiner Legge. “Our founder wanted Heathfield girls to ‘see the sky’. Whilst she meant it literally, I take it to be a metaphor to allow the girls to reach their greatest potential wherever their strengths lie – whether academic, artistic, sporting, musical or dramatic. “We have put a particular focus on academic performance in recent years and these results –

our best ever - show the hard work is paying off. They are testament to the dedication and high expectations of our talented team of staff and the hard work and ambition of our students.” The all girls’ school, founded in 1899, was in the vanguard of educational establishments advocating the theory that happiness equated with academic success and has always placed high importance on pastoral care accordingly. A fulfilling and enriching programme of cocurricular activities and sport, music, drama and the arts ensures Heathfield girls have an holistic and inspiring education. Also strong in the arts, Heathfield is the only school in the UK to have a partnership with the world-famous London College of Fashion. The school has a wide curriculum for a small school but is about far more than this. Its strength lies in its size - meaning every girl receives dedicated individual attention and is imbued with persistence, grit, confidence and the desire to achieve. Standing in beautiful surroundings just outside Ascot, in a classic Italianate country house set in 36 acres, the school is conveniently located being just 30 miles from central London, 9 miles from the M4 and 5 miles from the M3 motorways. Entry is at 11, 13 or 16. Scholarships are awarded for Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport at all three entry points. The school holds open mornings every term and private tours are also available. International Mindedness Should you be part of the new trend?
W
here once the concept of international mindedness seemed intellectual or aloof, it now seems like basic common sense to be taught how to enjoy, thrive and respect different cultures; to come out of school equipped with the skills to live and work successfully with people from other countries or cultures, or to be able to thrive anywhere in the world you choose to live. And if there is one form of education that truly embeds international mindedness, more so than perhaps any other, it’s an international education in an international school.
Developing global citizens Learning to appreciate and absorb cultural differences is just part of everyday life in an international school like ACS Cobham or ACS Egham. From a young age, students integrate with many different cultures, equipping them with the life skills to be global citizens and instilling them with a broad outlook. In a classroom with peers and teachers representing up to 40 different cultural backgrounds, students cannot help but develop a deeper and broader understanding across complex subjects. Students also establish lasting friendships with peers from around the world and for them, nationalities are not a label or a defining characteristic. They readily share their experiences from their home culture or places they have lived and celebrate their diversity. This naturally develops a global outlook which extends way beyond the classroom too.
Qualifications with a global outlook Qualifications and learning programmes that extend beyond national boundaries have to be central to an international education. Such programmes have international recognition not for their name alone, 22 SEPTEMBER 2017
but for their academic rigour and as a positive indicator of the personal development of an individual. One of the leading education programmes in this respect is the International Baccalaureate (IB), which is consistently cited by university admissions officers as the best preparation for higher education over other traditional UK curriculums. Admissions officers believe that IB students cultivate vital aptitudes needed to thrive at university including an ability for independent enquiry, self-management skills and open mindedness. urrently there are a bewildering number of cosmetic and anti-ageing treatments available. They all claim spectacular results, but sadly few live up to their promise. In addition to this, they may be administered by a variety of practitioners, including beauty therapists, aestheticians, nurses and dentists, with results and standards of care varying widely. Dr. Peter Forrester and Ms. Helen McEvoy strongly believe that as qualified doctors of medicine, their experience and scientific training allow them to look critically at the treatments on offer. They can then guide patients towards making voluntary and informed choices. As medical experts they recommend procedures and treatments that are suitable, are endorsed by scientific research, and most importantly, are proven to be effective and safe. They can then deliver these procedures and treatments, together with the highest standards of care.
Dr. Peter Forrester and Ms. Helen McEvoy offer: Non Surgical Treatments • Anti-wrinkle Injections - reduce frown lines and crow’s feet. • Dermal Fillers - smooth deeper lines and furrows as well as returning lost volume to the face. • Thread Lift - minimally invasive procedure where surgical threads are used to lift and support cheeks, jowls and neck. • Facial Peels - helps to return a healthy glow to dull tired skin. The Light Touch Clinic Guide to Post-Summer Skin Care
Refresh your skin after summer with the Light Touch Clinic.
Whilst there’s nothing better than relaxing on the beach, too much sun can wreak havoc on your skin, causing unwanted changes in texture and tone. As summer draws to a close, it’s time to think about treating your skin to some refreshment at the Light Touch Clinic. Blue Peel RADIANCE If your skin is looking a little lacklustre after basking in the sun, why not treat your skin to a pick-meup and book an Obagi Blue Peel RADIANCE treatment? This superficial peel is quick and has minimal downtime, making it easy to fit a treatment into your busy schedule. The star ingredient in Obagi Blue Peel RADIANCE is Salicylic Acid which exfoliates the top layer of the skin to reveal brighter skin with a more even tone. For the best results, we often recommend a course of peels combined with Dermalux Phototherapy. To tackle tougher pigmentation, you might want to consider complementing your peels with Obagi Nu-Derm skincare to use at home. BEFORE

4 Weeks After 3rd Tixel Treatment’
Protect + Nourish
Tixel Prolonged sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation which can be tricky to treat. However, Tixel, our latest treatment at the clinic, delivers outstanding results in as little as 3 treatments. Using pure heat energy, Tixel creates micro-pores in the skin to make the skin porous for around 6 hours post-treatment. These micro-pores allow topical pigmentation treatments to penetrate the skin. As well as tackling pigmentation, our skilled practitioners can use this treatment to soften lines and wrinkles for smoother skin.
ZENii Moisturising Sun Protection SPF 50 (£50) Even as we approach the cooler months, SPF is still a must as all year round our skin is exposed to UV rays. However, applying SPF needn’t be a chore – ZENii’s Moisturising Sun Protection sinks in effortlessly. This nongreasy formula offers broad spectrum protection and is enriched with Aloe Vera and Vitamin B5 to keep skin hydrated. The formula also has a very subtle tint to ensure that there is no residue after application. Tip: Sun protection is not just for the face - your neck, décolletage and hands are frequently exposed so don’t forget to apply protection to these areas too!
INTRAcel Over time, exposure to UV rays can accelerate the signs of ageing, leading to skin becoming more lined and losing its elasticity. However, we have a solution in our award-winning INTRAcel treatment. By combining fractional micro-needling with radio frequency energy, INTRAcel selectively degenerates collagen and elastin fibres deep within the skin. This in turn triggers a natural repair response from your body, encouraging the production of new, healthy collagen and elastin. This results in firmer, smoother skin with a more even tone. INTRAcel is not just for the face – we can use this treatment to rejuvenate the neck and décolletage too.
Prevent + Remedy Obagi Professional-C Serum (From £75) Unfortunately, UV exposure can result in wrinkles and changes in skin texture and tone. Products with high levels of Vitamin C can help remedy photo damage and improve the appearance of fine lines. In addition, you should consider integrating Vitamin C into your everyday routine as this super antioxidant helps protect your skin against free radical damage. A favourite with staff and patients alike, Obagi Professional-C Serum is perfect for everyday application and is available in a variety of strengths.

See inside your skin to repair and prepare

“We all know how important it is to look after our skin. But we’re often less sure about the best way to actually do that” We all know how important it is to look after our skin. But we’re often less sure about the best way to actually do that. How are we supposed to know how healthy it is? Which treatments it needs? Or which products will get the best results? As with most things in life, knowledge is power. Some skin issues are obvious, but it’s what goes on beneath the surface that really counts. Not all skin damage is visible to the naked eye, so even if your 74 SEPTEMBER 2017
skin looks healthy on the outside, what’s happening on the inside could be an entirely different story. That’s why Jill Zander a Courthouse Medispa offers a complimentary Skin Health Assessment using our innovative technology, which delivers a full and in-depth skin analysis. This sophisticated device uses special filters and advanced, multispectral imaging that allows our expert aestheticians to easily see on-screen the skin’s many different layers. This allows them to identify any underlying issues that aren’t visible to the naked eye, and to assess any problems quickly and efficiently. The result? They can recommend and provide the most effective, personalised treatment options, which are tailored exactly to your individual needs. So what sort of problems can a Skin Scanner identify? General ageing, UV sun damage, oiliness or dryness, skin tone, acne, skin sensitivity and hydration levels can all be assessed efficiently and effectively. Fortunately, many skin problems are reversible or improvable, so the sooner you have your analysis, the better the outcome – especially where sun damage is concerned. 96 High Street, Esher, KT10 9QJ; 01372 239920

Brown eyeshadow may not sound ground-breaking, but the eye looks at Roksanda and Stella Jean felt really fresh. he international fashion weeks give us their fair share of out-there beauty looks, and while a face covered in real flower petals a la Preen looks ever-so pretty on a load of impossibly beautiful teen models, it’s not exactly going work for Thursday night after-work drinks, is it? Three cheers, then, for the SS17 catwalks, which delivered a host of beautiful make-up ideas in soft, organic tones that you’ll definitely want to try. “These colours are designed to enhance and mimic really great skin condition,” explains MAC make-up artist Terry Barber. “The modern way to wear them is in textures that have an affinity with the complexion. “Peach, pink and tan look alive and fresh when applied with transparency,” agrees Mark Carrasquillo. “They are what I call very heightening colours.” Ready to heighten your look? Here are four ways to wear the sun-kissed make-up trend...
1. Golden eyes “Fresh but sophisticated, with a little touch of gold on the lip and the eye,” is how Lloyd Simmons described the look he created at Alexis Mabille, where MAC Powersurge soft gold eyeliner was applied beneath the lower lashline, creating a subtle, brightening effect. A very light coat of brown mascara was used, while at Shrimps, the lashes were left bare and a wash of metallic cream and powder shadows was buffed all the way up to the brows, to create an ‘other-wordly’ glow. 4. Peachy skin Give you bronzer a break and embrace the peachy, youthful glow of the girls at Missoni and Blumarine, where Petros Petrohilos’ brief was: “Rosy cheeks, a sun-kissed girl.... like she is living on the beach.” That means opting for liquid blushers and shimmery powders and applying liberally - matte is not an option. 2. Tan lips The Nineties brown lip isn’t going anywhere this season. In fact, at the SS17 shows, we got three new takes on the trend. The most literal homage came at Moschino, where precisely-lined lips were filled in with matte pale tan. At Blumarine, creamy mahogany complemented the peachy eyes, while at Roksanda, a russet lipstick was blurred at the edges. SHOE TRENDS TO REFRESH YOUR WARDROBE
Stuck in a wardrobe rut? Take the shortcut to trend town with a pair (or three) of the season’s chicest kicks. From comfy flats for day to statement-making high heels, these are the shoes to choose … WORDS: Katie Wright, Press Association
“Right now it’s all about ornate princess shoes with opulent detailing”
1. Back detailing While mules may be having a moment, elsewhere embellishment is focused firmly on the backs of shoes, with frills and florals making a strong case for court shoes and strappy sandals. Liven up a much-loved LBD with a pair of these statement stilettos. Topshop Rosebud Applique Stiletto Sandals, £46
3. Fairytale heels
1. Frilled sandals Frilly, but not too fussy - that’s the sandal mantra right now. So think stilettos in punchy hues or metallics, paired with tough-girl ripped jeans and the latest Nineties revival, the ‘going out top’. Extra points if you can work a bit of tulle or velvet into the mix. V by Very Gisele Asymmetric Frill Heeled Pink Sandals, £32, Very.co.uk
2. Next-level trainers
Minimalist mules, move over - right now it’s all about ornate princess shoes with opulent detailing. Basically, if they look like they could have fallen off Cinderella’s foot at midnight, you’re on the right track. You’d needn’t reserve these beauts for balls, however. Wear metallic mules with a pleated midi skirt and cropped tee for daytime princess vibes. Dune Delights Champagne Mules, £95
4. Sporty sandals Like the pool sliders trend but want a bit of lift? Then these chunky sandals are for you. Cool and comfy but not so massive that they veer into Spice Girls territory, they’ll become your holiday staples. Dune Kassius Silver Sandals, £80
The humble white trainer gets a makeover this season with floral prints, embroidery and all kinds of embellishment turning this daywear staple from boring to bling. GENERATION GAIN
cademy Salons has gone from one salon to five and a training facility in 16 years with two generations of hairdresser at the helm. Having a younger colleague come on board as your partner – in a business you’ve been running for years – could prove a challenge for many successful salon owners, but for Franco Capozzi, director of the Academy salons group, it was a very positive transition. Franco’s co-director Salv Mulé joined the business as salon manager in 1999 – some 27 years after Franco launched the business. Within a year Salv became a partner in the business and has been a major influence over the rapid growth of the group. Franco opened his first salon in Cobham, Surrey, in 1972 under the very grand name Franco’s of Rome – he arrived in the UK from Italy in 1962. The glamorous connotations obviously struck a chord with the local population and clients were soon clamoring for its services. In fact, the salon provided so successful that in 1985 Franco decided to sell it to the then

manageress and retire to Spain – at just the age of 42. However, within a few years Franco missed salon life, and in 1995 he returned to the UK and opened up a new Salon in Hersham. At this time Salv was working at the original Cobham salon under the former manageress and looking for a new challenge. He joined Franco as manager and so the partnership began. In 2000, with Salv now a full business partner the salon was rebranded as Academy salons and a new salon followed in Claygate 2006, a training academy in 2013 ,the Esher Salon in 2015 and last year Weybridge opened its doors. Franco said: “Salv brought with him a managerial structure that worked so well, this included targets and bonus schemes. regular one-to-one development meetings with every team member, helping everyone meet their full potential and achieve their personal goals. Also we get on so well and have the same goals.” One thing the pair didn’t disagree on was the need to open an academy to train its team members to the required standards. Explains Salv: “We were struggling to find the right staff and decided the best way forward was to grow our own organically. We like staff to understand our ethos and want people to buy in to it,” says Franco. “Most people can learn to cut hair. We concentrate on the customer service elements – and offering the very best service in the area.” The original idea was to have five salons and a training academy, but now that we have the right people on board we will probably keep opening more.” Concludes Franco, the man who started it all: “As long as pampering the client remains the focus – there has to be a balance between expanding and keeping those core values.”

The heart of the forest in your home
In the modern, urbanized world of “ready” solutions, we need calmness more than ever, to be able to escape from the hubbub of the city, the omnipresent wi-fi and upcoming deadlines.
I
n searching for a universal remedy for stress and feeling unwell, doctors have discovered the saving power of forest baths - calming walks in the surroundings of trees that are a mood booster and strengthen our body’s immune system. The Japanese Shinrin-yoku is a beautiful way to health for everyone and it is winning over hearts in the West. Being aware of this, Pixers designers would like to propose Forest Bathing motifs as a supplement to the time spent in nature’s surroundings. The internet is full of ideas on how to best spend time with nature. Offers of trips to the forest and group contemplation are popping up on AirBnB and Pinterest users are outdoing themselves inspiring with moss and needle-coverings. Not everyone, however, has the luxury of taking a walk through the woods every day, and with a bit of luck, they can visit a nearby park as the second best alternative. The Forest Bathing wallpaper series with the forest motif is a response to the growing popularity of “bathing” without water and soap bubbles which can be done on a daily basis, before and after work, and even during a gloomy or busy weekend. The rich green colour is not afraid of dominance or a secondary role. It’s so natural that it can appear on its own, intertwining various shades
“The rich green colour is not afraid of dominance or a secondary role” or in combination with other colours and motifs. Decorating walls or furniture with showy leaves or bark can be an introduction to developing and looking after nature in your interiors. Scented candles, mood music or artifacts brought in straight from the forest, arranged with taste, allow you to create something that has real ambiance. An interior that will not only be trendy and stylish, but also functional and friendly. And the saying “East or West, home is best” will take on a new meaning. www.pixersize.com 94 SEPTEMBER 2017

WHITE DECOR: TAKE A SHORTCUT TO CALM WITH NEUTRAL INTERIORS

Tranquil tints are the key ingredients for stress-busting schemes.
WORDS: Gabrielle Fagan

f you’re craving an escape from the heat and stresses of the day, pale and interesting rooms could be the answer. A neutral palette is not only fashionable but visually restful. “We believe in putting together a relaxed and comfortable home that reflects your own particular lifestyle and personality, and the quest to create a happy home - not a show home - is paramount,” explains stylist Atlanta Bartlett, who, along with her husband Dave Coote, is co-author of Pale & Interesting, a guide to decorating with a muted palette of subtle shades, for harmonious, soothing interiors. “A laid-back relaxed look stems from an easy-going attitude and is conjured with neutral tones and clever use of contrast. Then make it your own by pairing

functional with decorative, elegant with casual, handmade with man-made, and old with new.” Take your pick from a sophisticated ‘Chic White’ scheme or ‘Shades of Pale’, a fresh interpretation of rustic...
Chic White “This simple way of decorating - with a predominantly white palette - creates spaces that feel calm, spacious and uncluttered,” says Atlanta. “When it comes to furniture and accessories, less is definitely more. Stick to one or two key pieces and allow them plenty of space to breathe so they can speak for themselves. Soften the look with colour for accents and focal points. Chalky pastels,

off-whites, greys and neutrals will add just the right amount, without being overbearing or fussy. Alternatively, even one bright blue cushion in an all-white scheme will offer a welcome place to rest your eye.” Decor tip: In general, smooth, shiny or silky surfaces - such as mirror, lacquer or satin - create a more formal environment. If you have a family and pets, use washable wall paints, opt for painted floorboards rather than carpets, and plenty of easycare loose covers, so the space is practical as well as beautiful.
This is all about a gentle, pared-back, country-style interior, which celebrates natural textures, tones and upcycling. “Ensure your home has depth and interest by exploring the use of texture and form,” advises Atlanta. “Take inspiration from nature’s earthy tones and combine rough with smooth, geometric with organic, and light with dark. Recycling and reusing are essential to the Pale & Interesting ethos. Not only do they lighten the load on the world’s natural resources, but they’re also easy on your pocket and will help you to create an individual one-off style that cannot be bought on the high street. Furniture and accessories that show signs of wear-and-tear are like dear old friends - full of warmth and character. Think of textures like shades on a paint palette and combine surfaces as you would colours. Bear in mind that heavier, coarser ones, like wood, stone or linen, lend themselves to a more relaxed, rustic look.” Decor tip: Architectural reclamation companies are a recycler’s dream. Plunder them for pieces such as old shutters, which can be transformed into fitted cupboards; a pile of roof slates can be given a new lease of life as a tabletop; and an old window fitted with mirrored glass could be a stunning centrepiece for a hallway. Dahlia Collection now available on Pamono The Dahlia Collection – a monochrome solid European ash series comprised of a ining table, bench, coffee table and bookshelf designed for contemporary living with a communal feel is now available online via Pamono.
P
roduced in collaboration with family run Italian Manufacturer Universal, the debut collection combines local raw materials and modern engineering processes with traditional craft techniques. Both Mueller and Universal pay particular attention to their impact on the environment and the Dahlia Collection has been created using renewable energy sources with sustainability and longevity in mind. European ash has been a constant companion on Mueller’s design journey and with the collection manufactured in Central Europe, he felt the material was appropriate for his debut as an independent designer. “Looking around the design world at the heavy use of Oak and Walnut made me feel more confident to use Ash for the collection to showcase its beauty, durability and strength,” explains Mueller. “I understand how to work with Ash and get the most from it, not just in machining techniques but also to highlight the beauty of the grain variations and the material’s capacity for taking different finishes.” Having grown up in Austria, Mueller spent the majority of his time in his grandfather’s workshop working with materials and learning conventional techniques. His move to London in 2008, to study at the CASS School of Design, allowed him to develop his design language and immerse himself in his new urban surroundings, which have in turn formed the inspiration for the detailing featured in his designs.
100 SEPTEMBER 2017
Drawing inspiration from the pleasing juxtaposition of architectural elements in the city, Mueller has utilised a simplified line motif to create a sense of harmony across his collection. “I noticed the drain pipes on certain structures had contrasting colours which gave the houses interesting new outlines and enhanced the overall form,” states Mueller. “Clean lines are always referenced in one way or another in my designs and this is setting the tone for future developments, hopefully with some exciting twists.” This striking interplay is echoed in the colour choices selected by Mueller. Stained black ash frames have been chamfered to reveal the untreated ash below, adding an outline effect to the pieces, while the solid whitewashed tops corroborate his clean approach to design. With plans to expand the collection with a bespoke offering, Mueller envisions his customers choosing their own statement colour to accentuate their living space. The Dahlia Collection is available on Pamono on a made to order basis andcan be shipped worldwide within 6-8 weeks. www.alexandermueller.co.uk

he best kitchens don’t just look beautiful, but they behave beautifully too. That’s what international interiors company Neptune believe, and it’s a belief that’s felt in every inch of its exquisitely crafted kitchens. Timeless in style, thoughtful in design, uncompromising in quality, these are kitchens to last a lifetime. Founded in 1996, Neptune is an award-winning British interiors and lifestyle brand with stores across the UK and Europe, including our very own in the heart of Weybridge. For those who are yet to discover Neptune, theirs is a world of beautifully hand-crafted furniture, textiles and accessories for the home and garden. Design wise, they’re perhaps most known for kitchens with their heirloom-worthy dressers not far behind. Their trademark ‘look’ is British. Refined, simple, sturdy, and with an almost obsessive attention to detail. And they’re certainly most respected for their commitment to craft and quality. Never will you find chipboard in a Neptune piece, nor will you see MDF, ever. Put simply, they make things they’re proud of, and want you to be too.
“The pared-back Suffolk takes its cue from the Shaker movement” Neptune’s kitchen collection consists of four signature designs: Chichester, Suffolk, Henley and Limehouse, and each comes with a lifetime guarantee. Chichester is a classic English design with cockbead moulding and has a simple perfection to it. The pared-back Suffolk takes its cue from the Shaker movement and shows a real discipline to design. The almost regal Henley kitchen is crafted entirely from solid oak and includes some rather impressive curved cabinetry. The Limehouse is the sleek one. The most obviously contemporary, it’s full of hidden secrets like a pullout spice rack and white stone prisms that act as drawer dividers. The one thing they all have in common is a wonderful amount of choice. From paint colours and types of cabinetry to work surfaces and even hardware, together with your dedicated kitchen designer you can create the kitchen you’ve always wanted. All of these beautiful collections and more are available to view at the Neptune Weybridge store or online at www.neptuneweybridge.com. Going up in the world The most obvious benefit of having a loft conversion is adding space to your home. In fact there are many reasons why people choose to have their loft converted.
IDEAS FOR YOUR CONVERTED LOFT Loft conversions are created for many different purposes…
L
oft conversions have been shown to add around 20% on top of your property’s value, according to the Housing Market Research. This can add up to somewhere in the range of £15,000 - £35,000. The value of your property will increase no matter what you use the converted space for. This can be useful as the loft is often out of the way of the rest of the house. In order to get the most benefit from your loft conversion, carefully work out the costs to make sure that these do not add up to more than the conversion will be adding to the value of your property.
STAGES OF YOUR LOFT CONVERSION An architect or surveyor will be required in order to determine the loads that will be placed in the building to make sure that your property is still structurally sound. This is extremely important in all building and planning regulations, so will be required on top of your builder. Not all loft conversions will need planning permission, but you will always need to check this for sure before going ahead. Even if you do not need it, you still need to comply with building regulations which include inspections. It is much 112 SEPTEMBER 2017
Home Office... Perfect for creating an office at home – it can provide a quiet and uninterrupted space when working. Bedroom... Perhaps the most common use of a loft conversion, and creating a unique master bedroom away from the rest of the house. Loft bedrooms are one of the easiest conversions, and will require electricity though not much else. Bathroom... When creating a master bedroom you may choose to add in an luxury en-suite bathroom. This is also popular, though requires more work due to the plumbing involved and installation. Play Room... If you have children, this is an excellent use of the space. Just make sure the access to the loft is safe for your children to use. This shouldn’t be too difficult, as there are many great stairway options now available for converted lofts.

easier to check regulations before starting work – which will also save you money by avoiding problems down the line. You will need to be able to reach your loft easily once it has been converted, and your loft conversion company will help you determine your options when it comes to stairs. They should comply with fire regulations, and may need to be altered if used by small children. Most loft conversions take a few months to complete, and the planning stages can be even longer if you need planning permission. Inspections may need to be carried out, and you may need to get an agreement if the work disrupts your neighbours. The building work itself should take around 1 or 2 months to complete, but get an agreement on certain building stages from your loft conversion company.

Make summer last
Keep your garden looking colourful for longer. WORDS: Natalie Bradshaw, Press Association
T
he end of summer can mark the start of wilted annuals and faded perennials, but if you add some beautiful, bold lateflowering additions, you can make your garden a riot of colour until autumn. It’s easy to prolong the season with dahlias, heleniums, rudbeckias and a host of other bright blooms which will fit into many planting schemes and situations.
Hydrangea Flaunting an old-fashioned charm in a variety of colours - blues, vibrant pinks and frosty whites Hydrangeas grow up to six feet high and wide, so they’re great for creating a ‘sea of flowers’ effect. You can get different varieties, including lacecap, mophead or oakleaf hydrangeas. Consider placing in front of taller plants like small or medium-size trees that could offer the shade the shrubs prefer. But beware, too much shade can reduce their flowering.
Dahlia Flowering from mid-summer until the first frosts (which can be around mid-October, depending where you live), these popular blooms come in bronze, dark red, lavender, orange and pink, and are all different shapes and sizes. They make great standalones in their own beds or paired with grasses and verbena plants. They need a well-worked soil with good drainage and, once they’re established, be sure to water them three or four times a week.
Crocosmia These bright flowers are maintenance-free and easy to grow, so they’ll add an easy shot of colour to your garden. Their bold, sword-like flowers mainly 122 SEPTEMBER 2017
come in reds, oranges and yellows. Depending on the variety, crocosmia can grow up to a metre tall, and they don’t need pruning, just remove the dead leaves and flower stems before spring, when new growth starts.
Sedum Spectabile These pink late-summer flowers will save your garden from getting the blues well into autumn. Plant in a sunny position in your garden and pair with Japanese anemones, phlox or penstemons. These require little care, just check your plants regularly to make sure they’re not too dry.
Rudbeckias These are bushy plants that create masses of bold, zingy yellow flowers. Also known as black-eyed Susans because of their distinctive big black cone in the centre, they have a long flowering period between July to October. They are drought-resistant, not too fussy about soil type, and can grow over three feet tall, with a flower diameter of 2-3 inches.
Helenium These vibrant, daisy-shaped orange flowers bloom in late summer and autumn. Brilliant on their own or pair with tall, purple salvias, for a nice contrast. Grow in fertile, moist, but well-drained soil and deadhead regularly to ensure they flower for longer.
Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ For a splash of purple, then try Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’, a purple, daisy-like flower with a yellow centre. These bushy herbaceous perennials can grow up to 90cm and like an open, sunny position. Cut back in late autumn and pair with a tall, pink penstemon.

Creating beautiful attic bathrooms “Make the most of your space by working with the original features: exposed beams, a sloping ceiling and extra skylights can all create a beautiful attic bathroom to relax in”
Looking for an inventive way to make effective use of a loft conversion? An attic bathroom can transform your new room into a showstopping area.
T
ucked away in the roof, an attic bathroom can be a quiet retreat from everyday life and, with the right finishing touches, will become a warm and welcoming place to escape to after a busy day. Make the most of your space by working with the original features: exposed beams, a sloping ceiling and extra skylights can all create a beautiful attic bathroom to relax in. Or, you can create something special from scratch, adding in your own accessories and features. Working with the natural architecture of your attic, you can choose a shower and clever storage solutions for smaller areas. Well-placed mirrors will also create the illusion of a much larger bathroom, lending a light and airy feeling, even to cramped attic spaces. Add extra features to larger rooms, such as a freestanding bath or a heated towel rack to add a luxurious touch to your new attic bathroom.
HOW TO DESIGN A LOFT CONVERSION BATHROOM Before starting to build a loft conversion you will need to check if you need planning permission from your local planning department. However, regardless of whether or not you need planning permission a loft conversion will require Building Regulations approval. When building a loft conversion bathroom, or indeed any additional bathroom in the house, consult a specialist in bathroom loft conversations – they can give you all the expert advice - initially whether or not your boiler is capable of supplying hot water to the extra bathroom. One solution to this could be an electric shower that produces its own hot water on demand. Also, consider if you wish to have a window in your loft bathroom, and if so where. Have a clear idea of what you want for your bathroom, but be aware that you may have limitations or need to make some changes based on the layout of the room. For example, where the staircase will need to be and if there are any restrictions with plumbing. Again the experts can advise you and suggest ideas on how to achieve your loft bathroom retreat. Whether a full or part en-suite, it will provide the privacy to unwind - and of course add value to your property.

ADAPT TO MOVE I
n today’s property market, a number of homes are sitting with the For Sale sign for too long, with families stuck in ‘pause’ as they wait for their lives to move on. This disappointing situation is all too evident in the local Elmbridge market, and can have a detrimental effect on the occupiers. However help is at hand in an unlikely source. When most people think of hiring an architect or interior designer to redesign their home, it is usually associated with works to a new home they moved into. However these professionals are well placed to assist homeowners looking to sell their homes by reimagining them or adapting them to give them the edge over others when it comes to the sale. With years of experience needed to qualify as a chartered architect, the profession is well versed in identifying opportunity and assessing flaws which
126 SEPTEMBER 2017
can easily be overcome by minor changes to unlock the houses potential and appeal to a wider market, making it easier to sell. Changes that can unlock the house sale will vary from property to property. This may be the ability to add a further bedroom, or to redesign the master bedroom suite or perhaps adding another reception room. However the most important space in today’s homes are social kitchens. These are not merely places to cook, they are the hub of the house where along with cooking the family spends most of their time, and will include dining, seating areas as well as gathering areas for guests. Well designed social kitchens also connect to an outdoor living area whereby the house can seamlessly engage with the garden. Having a quality social kitchen can make all the difference in the house being sold swiftly.
“The most important space in today’s homes are social kitchens. These are not merely places to cook, they are the hub of the house”
While undertaking the works can mean costly investments into something one will ultimately sell on and not benefit from, it needs to be seen in a pragmatic manner with a view that often one has to invest in any product going to market to give it the best chances of sale and an edge over the competition. These investments should not be too tailored to the current homeowners, instead it should be designed around what the potential purchasers will be looking for. Lots of clever storage for house sales aimed at families with small children and downsizers. Good connection to gardens and making the most of the inside / outside space for homes and games rooms aimed at older or growing children. Social outdoor living areas and plenty of entertainment spaces, inc media rooms and TV dens and a welcoming entrance hall for homes aimed at the active socialite. Houses with an annex room for those living with 3rd generantion family members or nannies. The scale of investment for the works will vary again from property to property, ranging from complete renovations down to focussing in key parts of the house, perhaps aiming to fix just the kitchen or upgrading the houses kerb appeal by improving the façade or front drive. Another way to maximise your house’s potential is to see if you can obtain planning permission for making the house larger and selling the house with this permission in place; which typically lasts up to 3 years allowing plenty of time for future purchasers to implement the works. If you are fortunate enough you can also explore if there is a possibility to add a further home to the plot or completely reconfigure the house by the introduction of a larger new build home on your existing plot thus
“Concept Eight are a multi award winning design focussed architects and interior design studio”
offering up the sale to not just buyers of your current home, but buyers who are after a larger new build house in the same plot. If this is not practical or possible you can even hire an architect or interior designer to put together a pack aimed to form part of the sale package which identifies what can be possible for the house for the future buyers, without actually undertaking the works. This minimises the investment to prior to sale and helps improve the house’s appeal to potential buyers by giving them a clear idea of what can be possible once they move in. You cant change the location of your home you are trying to sell, but you can certainly improve it’s chances of sale so you and your family can move onto the next chapter of your lives. The Listed Property Owners’ Club
Six simple steps to protect your listed home “Chimney stacks and parapets are particularly exposed and vulnerable so look out for open joints where mortar joints may be letting water in”
L
isted buildings rely on regular inspection and maintenance to keep them in good repair and to prevent more serious problems developing. Spotting potential problems is not difficult, here The Listed Property Owners’ Club share six simple steps to ensure you protect your home’s unique history and character.
STEP 1: CHECK THE ROOF Check ridge tiles which sometimes come loose and need to be re-bedded. Use binoculars to look for any damage to lead flashings or mortar fillets at the junction of the roof with walls, parapets or chimney stacks. Check in the loft to see if there is any evidence of leaks or gaps in the roof covering.
STEP 2: CHECK THE CHIMNEY STACKS Chimney stacks and parapets are particularly exposed and vulnerable so look out for open joints where mortar joints may be letting water in.
STEP 3: CHECK THE GUTTERS AND DOWNPIPES Check that gutters are not blocked by leaves, that they fall effectively towards the downpipes, and that the joints are not leaking. Look for cracks or rust on cast iron rainwater goods.
STEP 4: CHECK THE DRAINS Check that drains are not blocked by leaves and debris and that the traps are free flowing. Flush through rainwater gullies with a bucket of water or a high pressure hose to remove any sludgy deposits.
STEP 5: CHECK THE WALLS Check for cracks or areas where damp is presenting a problem and that any airbricks are not blocked. 130 SEPTEMBER 2017
Cracked, flaking or blistering paintwork is a sure sign that decoration is required. If you are concerned about any more serious defects consult a competent conservation builder, a conservation engineer or a conservation surveyor. The Listed Property Owners’ Club can help you find someone local to you.
STEP 6: CHECK YOUR HOME INSURANCE POLICY Despite your best efforts to maintain and conserve your listed home, there are some eventualities that can’t be prepared for. Should the worst happen, would your insurance policy provide adequate cover? A quick chat with the LPOC Insurance team will help reveal any hidden nasties in your current policy, and make sure that you and your listed home are fully protected. For further information visit www.lpoc.co.uk or telephone 01795 844939
