GARETH MALONE UK TOUR
Thursday 15th December G LIVE
Singing is back! During the pandemic, singing was as good as banned and we were all silenced! But now the time has come to lift our voices once more as Gareth Malone brings his new tour, ‘Sing-AlongA-Gareth!’ to venues across the UK this autumn.
Join Gareth for this heart-warming show, together with his band, four stellar singers and a choir, local to each venue he will visit. Kicking off on 26 October at The Lowry in Salford, the show will then tour around the UK before culminating on 16 December at the Poole Lighthouse. Tickets go on-sale at 9.00am on Friday 8 July from garethmalone.com
Audiences will get to enjoy an evening of songs that Gareth has sung on TV over the last 15 years, and many of the tracks that were performed by him along with the hugely successful ‘Great British Home Chorus’ - which saw thousands of people around the country sing with Gareth from their kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms during the pandemic, including:
• I’m Still Standing – Elton John
• Walking On Sunshine – Katrina and the Waves
• Ordinary World - Duran Duran
• Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
• Stand By Me - Ben E. King
• Wake Me Up – Avicii
• Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon & Garfunkel
• Fields Of Gold – Sting
• Along with a unique medley of party songs created by Gareth!
Playing piano, guitar and bass, Gareth will keep everyone entertained throughout the show as he creates songs on the spot and helps the audience to write their own songs, discovering some hidden talent along the way. This is a feel-good evening of upbeat fun tracks we all know and love, which everyone can easily sing-along too. And you’ll be able to download the song list in advance to practice. Whether you are coming with a choir or as sing-along solo, all are welcome to join Gareth in this celebration of community and song.
Gareth Malone said: “I cannot wait to get out on the road and sing with people this autumn. Wherever I go, people are so excited about being able to listen to live music and to enjoy singing once again. This is going to feel like a real party.” glive.co.uk

The Benefits of Online Schooling vs Traditional School
Minerva’s Virtual Academy is a unique, online independent school for pupils aged 12 - 18. Pupils study the British Curriculum from the comfort and safety of their own home, wherever they live in the world, receiving an affordable, world-class education to rival traditional school for the first time. The school enables its pupils to thrive academically, make friends online and off, and helps them develop the skills needed to succeed in the modern world. Pupils choose from 20 subjects at GCSE and A Level. Personal mentors support each child outside lesson hours. A dynamic weekly timetable includes live lessons, virtual assemblies, after school clubs, wellbeing sessions, and an exciting co-curricular learning programme called “World Changers” that tackles the most urgent issues of the day. Minerva’s Virtual Academy is run by Headmaster Lawrence Tubb, who taught at Wycombe Abbey for nine years, and is supported by a team of outstanding teachers and mentors who’ve come together to re-define what’s possible for school-age children in the 21st century.
• Pupils can receive a world class education at home, anywhere in the world
• Pupils can study at speeds that suit them - they are no longer held back or silenced by the class majority
• Anxious pupils can gain confidence by leaving the pressure of the traditional school behind them
• Pupils receive higher quality one-to-one attention via personal mentors
• Parents are closer to their children on a daily

basis, helping to create strong family bonds
‘We think the pandemic has been an opportunity for us to reflect on what is important and we are getting very comfortable with the fact that there are many paths to success for children and that traditional school does not always bring out the best in every child. Overall, Minerva has been a life-saver for all of us. It has been a great experience and it has brought out the best in our daughter.’

HOW DESIGNERS PAID TRIBUTE TO THE QUEEN AT LONDON FASHION WEEK
Catwalk shows featured moments honouring the late monarch. By Katie Wright.
London Fashion Week was swiftly scaled back following the announcement of the death of the Queen – a longstanding supporter of the UK’s largest creative industry – just a week before the biannual event was due to begin.
“As a business-to-business event London Fashion Week will continue while observing Royal Protocol and the event will be dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with our own moments of respect,” the British Fashion Council said in a statement.
“Having spoken to designers and industry members, we as an industry want to unite as a creative and business community to celebrate Her Majesty’s legacy and commitment to creativity and design.”
Parties were called off, some catwalk shows (including high profile designers such as Burberry and Raf Simons) were cancelled or postponed, and all presentations due to take place on the day of the funeral were rescheduled.
Designers who did go ahead as planned paid tribute to the late Queen on the catwalk in a variety of ways. Here’s how London Fashion Week’s big
names marked the occasion during a subdued spring/summer edition…
S.S. DALEY
Winner of the LVMH Prize for Young Designers, Steven Stokey-Daley’s third runway presentation was based around a dramatised reading of the love letters between Vita Sackville West and Violet Trefusis.
The show opened with bells tolling, before seven black-clad models carrying white candles processed down the catwalk – which many saw as a mournful tribute to the late Queen.
“I was the first to tell her [my grandmother] the Queen had died, and she burst into tears on the phone. And I don’t know why, I felt really emotional about that,” Stokey-Daley told Vogue, admitting he has mixed feelings about the royal family: “I grapple with my personal standpoint on the monarchy, as regards to class.”
NENSI DOJAKA
Attendees at up-and-coming designer Nensi Dojaka’s show walked over a white petal-strewn

floor to reach their seats (white flowers are often used in memorial bouquets).
On the catwalk, models including Emily Ratajkowski carried delicate floral sprigs during the finale – thought to be lily of the valley, one of the Queen’s favourite flowers.
JW ANDERSON
Perhaps the most literal tribute of London Fashion Week came at the JW Anderson show, which was held in a casino arcade against a backdrop of neon-lit gambling machines.
The final look at the colourful collection was an oversized black T-shirt dress emblazoned with a simple ‘Thank you’ message to the late monarch.
CHRISTOPHER KANE
A minute’s silence was held in remembrance of the Queen before Christopher Kane’s show at London’s iconic Roundhouse venue.
The SS23 collection featured Kane’s signature blend of the weird (prints straight out of human anatomy textbooks and transparent latex straps that gave models fake six-packs) and the wonderful (pastel-hued blouses and lacy LBDs), as well as vibrant floral prints reminiscent of the kind the monarch used to wear.
In the show notes Kane said he was inspired by “the young Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret roaming the grounds of Balmoral”, and a cape detail jumper and skirt combo was inspired by the Queen in her last official photograph.
HALPERN
Michael Halpern honoured the memory of Queen Elizabeth II with the regal opening look of his show, which was presented in silence.
Inspired by a conversation Halpern had with the late monarch, in which he expressed his love of ostentation, the billowing blue cape was topped with a mint green headscarf similar to the kind worn off-duty by Her Majesty.
ERDEM
Erdem Moralioglu, a designer popular with royals including the Princess of Wales, dedicated his SS23 collection to the late Queen, citing one of her most famous quotes in his show notes: “Grief is the price we pay for love.”
A collection of largely pastel, white and chartreuse dresses in the designer’s typically ornate
style was bookended with a handful of black and white Fifties-style tailoring and full-skirted evening looks, topped with black mourning veils.
RICHARD QUINN
The late monarch famously sat front row at Richard Quinn in 2018 and presented the young designer (now a major fixture on the LFW schedule) with the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design.
Recalling that iconic moment, the Londonborn talent dedicated SS23 to the Queen, opening the show with a series of all-black looks featuring many of her sartorial signatures – from headscarves and crowns to belted coats and ballgowns – while archive footage from her youth played on a big screen.
Black confetti rained down on the catwalk during the finale, the dramatic show celebrating the life of Quinn’s most high profile and influential supporter.

Solid to the core
In my practice, function is as important as form when it comes to the body. As we age many subtle changes occur which, overtime, can lead to quite dramatic differences in both appearance and lifestyle.
Loss of muscle tone, called muscle atrophy, starts from around age thirty and can lead to general muscle weakness as well as reduced mobility. Of particular importance is core strength which is needed for everyday acts like sitting, standing, or tying your shoes. A weak core can also affect your back causing pain and for which some opt for pain medication instead of addressing the underlying issue.
Preventing fall related injuries
Core strength is important for day-to-day movement, but also helps your balance and general stability which can lessen the risk of falling. A strong core is not only important for general wellbeing but will help to prevent injuries such as bruises, sprains, hip fractures, or head trauma.
Post-pregnancy issues
Around two thirds of women postpartum will suffer from some degree of diastasis recti which is a separation of the abdominal muscles. This is a completely natural and occurs during the gestational period of pregnancy and in response to a mother’s change in hormone levels. While for some women diastasis recti does resolve naturally, age at the time of becoming pregnant, as well as muscle tone prior to pregnancy, does have an impact on how well the body recovers.
Building your core
When it comes to muscle atrophy it is best to undertake regular exercise, including weight training with free weights, will help you to maintain muscle tone while also increasing bone density. If you have not been in the habit of exercising, then it is advisable to first check with your doctor.
In my clinic
For my patients looking to regain muscle tone and target certain muscle groups, I offer Emsculpt NEO. This device is designed specifically to build
muscles fast and can be used for injury recovery or alongside a programme of regular exercise for general wellbeing. In one 30-minute session the Emsculpt causes the muscles to contract as many as 20,000 times meaning the intensity of the workout is hard to replicate naturally. Emsculpt can be sued to target the abs to improve core strength but is also used on other major muscles such as the buttocks, calves, thighs, and arms. Emsculpt is delivered over a course of six sessions and the treatment is ideal for those looking to kickstart their fitness or for those who are wanting to address issues of core instability or diastasis recti.

Spotlight on… King Edward VII’s Hospital Breast Unit
The Breast Health Unit at King Edward VII’s Hospital has evolved to become a world-leading centre for breast cancer. The state-of-the-art facility offers rapid screening and one-stop assessment with access to specialist consultants who are leading the field in advanced surgical techniques and treatments. But something else that sets the Centre apart is its focus on highly personalised, integrated care.
Evidence demonstrates that a holistic approach to breast health has numerous benefits for patients, from reducing the stress of initial investigations right through to better adherence to treatment plans and improved emotional and physical wellbeing during their cancer journey and beyond.
Located in London’s Harley Street Medical District, King Edward VII’s Hospital’s Breast Health Centre has taken patient-centred care to a whole new level. Care is delivered by an expert multi-disciplinary team which not only includes cancer surgeons, microsurgeons, radiologists and clinical nurse specialists but extends to physiotherapists, pain management experts and clinical geneticists.
Breast Health Centre manager and clinical nurse specialist, Amelia Cook, explains that the team has raised the bar on personalised care. ‘Everything is tailor-made for each individual and our ethos is to work with the patient as a team,’ she says.
Opened in 1899, King Edward VII’s is one of
76 OCTOBER 2022 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY
London’s oldest independent hospitals and with just 56 beds, also one of the smallest. Along with its royal patronage and charitable status, this has helped it create a discrete and highly personalised approach to patient care.
Lead consultant surgeon at the Breast Health Centre Mr Paul Thiruchelvam highlights that this focus on bespoke treatment, together with a tight knit group of physicians drawn from across London’s teaching hospitals who work alongside specialist nursing staff, has enabled the centre to develop a shared vision.
‘We put the patient very much at the centre of treatment,’ he explains. ‘That involves delivering world-class cancer care, but also looking more widely at the patient as a whole. We not only look at the patient’s cancer needs, but also their emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing through their cancer journey.’
That personalised journey begins right from first contact with the patient.
Screening and assessment
Anyone over the age of 40 who simply wants a breast check-up and is not experiencing any symptoms can access the Centre’s mammogram screening service provided they are registered with a GP in the UK. If they don’t have a UK GP, King Edward VII’s Hospital can connect them with one from its own team or a local practice.
‘That ensures that when the results go back to patients, they’ve got somebody overseeing their care. Even if they are absolutely fine, we always ensure the GP gets the results so they can be discussed properly with the patient,’ says Amelia. Results are usually available on the same day but if there are concerns, patients will be invited back for a consultation with one of the Centre’s team of top radiologists.
No two women are the same and additional assessments might include 3D mammography or ultrasound, which can be used to get different images of the breast, and/or MRI or stereotactic biopsy. Crucially, says Amelia, the results are relayed back quickly, and next steps discussed in detail with the consultant and clinical nurse specialist.
Speedy access and results can be even more important if patients are experiencing symptoms of breast cancer such as a lump or discolouration – and the accompanying anxiety this can cause.
Women - or indeed men - of any age who have worrying symptoms can self-refer to the Centre’s one stop shop ‘triple assessment’.
Regarded as the gold standard for diagnosis, triple assessment includes a physical examination, mammogram or ultrasound scan and, if needed, a biopsy. The whole procedure can be completed in as little as an hour. Most people can be reassured, but for those with a cancer diagnosis, the fact the service is consultant-led means they can begin discussing treatment options straight away.
‘Having a cancer diagnosis is extremely complex. There is a lot of information to take on board at a very difficult time, so it is really important we tailor the care and the information we provide,’ says Paul.
Advanced treatments
Ultimately, Paul explains, patients need to be empowered to make decisions about their personal treatment. ‘We have to make sure we talk about all treatment options, along with the particular advantages and disadvantages,’ he says. ‘This is extremely important because we know that patients who are involved actively in their decisionmaking process have a much better cancer experience.’
Treatment options discussed might include surgical and non-surgical management, but much cancer care is multi-modal and may include surgery alongside chemotherapy, radiotherapy and endocrine therapy.
King Edward VII’s Hospital is at the cutting edge of some of the most complex surgical procedures. Paul and his colleagues not only work closely as multi-disciplinary teams but are increasingly sharing the operating theatre to perform cancer surgery alongside advanced

microsurgical techniques for breast reconstruction and lymphedema prevention. ‘Working with fellow consultants means you can undertake complex surgeries more expediently and safely,’ explains Paul.
The team has been at the forefront of deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap reconstruction – a highly complex autologous breast reconstruction procedure which uses the patient’s own abdominal tissue to recreate the breast mound.
‘It is an extremely complex procedure, but we have highly skilled microsurgical colleagues who are able to deliver outstanding outcomes and with extremely low rates of complications,’ says Paul. However, he adds, undertaking an immediate breast reconstruction may not be right for all women at the same time as cancer surgery. ‘For some patients, reconstruction may not be at the forefront of their minds so they may opt to delay the procedure. It’s a very personal decision but the important thing is that patients are offered a choice.’
Alongside advanced reconstruction techniques, King Edward VII’s Hospital is at the forefront of an innovative procedure to reduce the risk of lymphoedema - a chronic condition which causes swelling in the body’s tissues following cancer
treatment. The technique, lymphatic microsurgical healing approach (LYMPHA), can again be performed alongside cancer surgery. Effectively, it reconnects the lymphatic drains in the arm to the area under the shoulder joint to allow lymphatic fluid to flow freely back into the circulation.
Paul, who is a member of the expert panel on breast cancer-related lymphoedema, and was involved in drafting best practice guidelines for the American Society of Breast Surgeons, highlights that the technique has been shown to greatly reduce lymphoedema in patients whose treatment requires the removal of a large number of lymph nodes.
‘Our team travelled to Genoa to visit Professor Francesco Boccardo, who first described the LYMPHA procedure. Our technique has evolved over the past four years, and I am proud to say that we are about to carry out our 40th procedure. We are extremely fortunate to be able to offer it to our patients and potentially reduce their risk of developing this extremely debilitating condition,’ he explains.
Complementary services
International links and Paul’s work with the American Society of Breast Surgeons has also
78 OCTOBER 2022 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY
“Alongside advanced reconstruction techniques, King Edward VII’s Hospital is at the forefront of an innovative procedure to reduce the risk of lymphoedema”
helped the Breast Health Centre integrate a range of complementary services into its treatment pathways to provide patients with 360-degree care. Post-operative pain and discomfort can be an additional problem for women undergoing cancer treatment, particularly after a mastectomy.
‘There is a tailored protocol in the US around patients having pre-operative pain assessments to ensure that they don’t develop a chronic pain cycle,’ explains Paul. ‘And this is something I have integrated into my practice.’
The team now includes a dedicated consultant pain specialist, Dr Matthew Brown, who can assess women before their operation and design a bespoke post-operative pain management plan as well as deliver complementary therapies such as acupuncture.
The Centre has also developed a unique physiotherapy programme where patients are seen before, as well as after, surgery. This gives the specialist physiotherapists a deeper understanding of the patient’s normal function so they can produce a post-operative plan that will get them back to full mobility as quickly as possible.
And for those patients whose clinical history indicates a genetic link, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, King Edward VII’s Hospital is the only private hospital in London with a truly comprehensive genetics service. Lead by consultant clinical geneticists Professor Marc Tischkowitz and Dr Anjana Kulkarni, the service can also be extended to family members if a cancer-related gene mutation is identified.
Clinical nurse specialists
A multi-disciplinary approach has been shown to greatly improve governance and patient safety. However, to ensure it genuinely improves patient experience, it is vital that care is coordinated, which is where Amelia and fellow clinical nurse specialist Helen Froyd play a pivotal role.
‘We are very fortunate to have two outstanding and experienced breast care nurses,’ says Paul. ‘They are absolutely key in the patient journey. They are the first point of contact for the patient and facilitate their appointments with the various members of the cancer team.’
Indeed, Amelia and Helen are there to help patients navigate their care from that very first screening or assessment.
‘That means we are there for patients right
from diagnosis and often before,’ says Amelia. ‘It is really personalised care that we offer here. We’ll look at the whole person to see where we can target support. It’s very interactive and there are all sorts of touch points from face-to-face clinics to text messaging. The important thing is we are there when patients need us so even if it’s 10 o’clock at night, they can leave a message and we’ll call them back the next day.’
During treatment, Amelia and Helen carry out regular needs assessments to help identify any areas of concern for their patients - whether mental, physical, social or even financial. They can also perform micropigmentation – a tattoolike procedure to recreate the nipple and areola following reconstruction surgery – and provide long term support, in some cases years after treatment has finished.
‘Even if patients are completely cured without any problems – and most women are – we will see them in follow up a year later,’ says Amelia. ‘And they will always have our contact numbers, so even if it is months or years down the line and they have a question or feel anxious about something, we are there to support and advise.’
According to Paul, it is this very high-level support that can make a real difference for patients coming to terms with a diagnosis and what can be a long road to recovery.
‘What patients value most is being looked after by an experienced team guiding their care,’ he says. ‘Knowing that there is a group of people who want the very best outcome for them helps patients get through their cancer treatment and it’s an honour to be part of that team delivering a world-class level of care.’

Why non-invasive treatments are becoming more popular than injectables!
Lisa Harris, of Lisa Harris Skin Science, explains
Why Injectables can speed up the Ageing Process.
Most clients, who have “over done” their skin by over using skin peels, harsh products, dermaabrasion, Botox and other fillers, are now looking to repair & improve skin health with other alternatives.
Overuse of Botox can lead to muscle atrophy, causing the muscle to become lifeless, making it hard to stimulate & correct the muscle definition during skin treatments. Also thinning of the skin where you can visibly see discolouration with waves of reds & purples (where the skin transparently shows the muscle).
Overuse of fillers, can stretch the skin over time and migrate causing facial distortion (pillow face), leading to an undesirable look.
My Expert Advice
Injectables are relatively safe but overuse is not a good thing. It’s a “No” for me & I’m glad that there is more awareness and better ways to improve your skins youthfulness.
Skin can be transformed using non-injectable skin aesthetics, cosmeceutical skin care and skin food supplements. All three ways will transform the skin positively, and the client will see for themselves the improvements that all three together elicit. This is why I am so confident –there is nothing more persuasive than seeing positive results, especially when you know they are achieved in the right way.
Corrective Treatments & Alternatives for Botox & Fillers
With 27+ years in the Aesthetic Industry, I have used my wealth of knowledge, and clinical experience, to create Signature Skin Treatments,
combining exclusive advanced technology & natural raw materials that organically rebuild the integrity of the skin, which addresses all skin concerns. Improving muscle tone, skin vitality and boosting Collagen (skin tightening), that results in a more natural, desirable look.
We have global recognition for delivering facial rejuvenation & body treatments with long-lasting benefits.
Gut & Skin Health
Your skin is like a window into the health of your inner world, and because so many things in our lifestyles can wipe out the good bacteria we’re supposed to have, our skin often reflects imbalances in the system. Looking after your gut with; Prebiotics & Probiotics, help to repair your gut lining and feeds your microbiome (good bacteria). This will help to heal inflammation within your body (linked to Rosacea, Acne & Eczema), as well as keeping your skin looking younger & healthier.
My ethos is to improve the overall skin health and speak the truth about skin ageing and how to slow this process down by increasing the volume within the skin and not by thinning out the skin.

LIGNEOUS KITCHENS
From the perspective of our work as providers of the very best kitchens and cabinetry that money can buy, for our products to qualify as luxury they must distinctively fulfil certain criteria that separate them from the merely premium. The use of rarefied and hard-to-work materials is something we are proficient at, that allows us to design installations that truly cross this line into luxury status. Few manufacturers can match the technical accomplishments of the Eggersmann Brand. Their ‘Unique’ range takes a carefully selected group of marbles, granites and limestones as well as brass and stainless steel and then clads an entire kitchen island with them to a level of detail to be found virtually nowhere else. The workmanship and attention to the craft that this represents Is unparalleled. It is this excellent use of the material that fulfils the obligation of a product to provide a level of exclusivity to a client that allows it to call itself luxury. Eggersmann takes this principle of applying the talents of a master craftsman to exotic materials and applies it across all the elements that we use in contemporary design, that helps us to design, create and install what amounts to kitchen works of art. Where the very boldest concepts are enabled by a sheer mastery of fabrication.
This principle can be seen in action at our studio in Walton-on-Thames, where we have a ‘Unique’ island installed. Entirely clad in 9mm Pietra Viva marble, the drawers on one side have a mechanical open assist, all that is needed to activate the smooth opening and interior drawer lighting is to apply some light pressure to the drawer front. On the panels facing the front showroom window the drawers have finger-pull
cut-outs beautifully machined out of the marble. But there is one more unbelievable surprise that this piece of kitchen luxury has in store that is the only one of its kind in the country. If one stands on the far side of the island from the front window the entire worksurface can be slid toward the window, revealing a Gaggenau flush fitting hob. This is technology for the very discerning, that few manufacturers have the capability to even contemplate. Eggersmann have this capability and apply it flawlessly. This unmatched talent is what enables us to create the kitchens that inspire one to live in true luxury, knowing that the materials and function of ones living space makes a fundamentally telling statement about the status of one’s lifestyle and the exclusivity of the products that one surrounds oneself with.

‘Moody’ kitchen design
WORKSURFACES
“Picking a darker worksurface and pairing it with lighter cabinetry is a great way to bring rich-toned materials into your space. Dark stone, wood and quartz can evoke a luxurious feeling, whilst being incredibly hardwearing. For example, a granite worksurface or compact laminate pairs beautifully with white kitchen cabinets, and flourishes when waterfalled down the side of an island. There are worksurfaces all budgets to suit a ‘moody’ aesthetic, so don’t let the price tag of more expensive materials deter you. For example, compact laminate, which is long-lasting yet stylish, can help you achieve your desired look at a more cost-effective price than natural stones.
LIGHTING
s the days get shorter and the evenings get darker, it’s natural for us to want to be surrounded by deeper tones in the home to create a feeling of cosiness and warmth. Introducing these ‘moody’ hues into your kitchen design can bring warmth and sophistication to any space, whilst maintaining an atmosphere that is easy to live with all year round. You can introduce these elements in as subtle or bold way as you like, depending on your own personal preference and how much impact you’d like to make.
CABINETRY
“Dark kitchen cabinets provide depth, warmth and personality to a space and have grown in popularity in recent years. They not only provide a great backdrop in the kitchen, but also offer practicality too, as they don’t easily show dirt and marks – making them easy to keep looking fresh and clean. Dark blues, greens and greys have become staple colours to create an interior scheme that embodies the ‘moody’ trend and it’s easy to see why. These hues maintain a level of softness that draws you in, working brilliantly with greys, whites, pinks and more to create countless looks and finishes. With such a solid base colour in place across the cabinetry, don’t be afraid to experiment and mix textures, metallics and stone through worktops, flooring, and accessories, to create something that really reflects your style. Alternatively, you could choose two complementing cabinet colours to soften the look, such as midnight blue and French white. If you want to continue the moody theme to the inside of your cabinets, you can now opt for a grey interior across the whole Benchmarx range at no additional cost.
“When taking your kitchen to the dark side, it’s important to consider how you’re going to complement it with your lighting. Start by thinking about the main lighting source in the room and how it can be maximised. If you’re opting for spotlights, consider the placement of each light to ensure they aren’t blocked by cabinets or walls. I’d also recommend installing warm lights to keep the kitchen feeling inviting, especially during the colder months. Deep-coloured pendant lighting, such as matt black or brushed brass, not only adds a point of interest to the room, but also more focused illumination suited to zones where food preparation or homework is completed. You may also wish to add under-cupboard lighting to highlight the rich tones within your worksurface or add strip lighting under your countertop to accentuate the lower cabinet doors.
FURNISHINGS AND ACCESSORIES
“Not ready to fully commit to a dark colourscheme all year round? If you just want to cosy things up for the colder months, try adding deeper hues through your furnishings and accessories. By swapping out cushion covers, vases and crockery, you can easily add a touch of moodiness to your space without a complete overhaul. This is a great approach for anyone who likes to change their kitchen style regularly and grows bored quickly.”

Stephanie Griffiths is the driving force behind her company with the sole aim of creating spaces to capture her client’s dream requirements and transform them into inspirational comfortable homes, offices, or workspaces. Steph draws upon her broad experience within the industry to bring fresh ideas using her flair for colour, textiles, furniture & accessories to complement each project. Her passion for art enables her to combine, where appropriate, heritage pieces with contemporary additions whilst still recognising practical applications and purpose. Being a keen photographer and stylist gives Steph’s work another dimension, with her constant sourcing of any new furniture discoveries from antiques to new contemporary pieces, she loves to add a story to her work through some of the items she uses in a project. At ‘A Styling Story’ we offer Interior Design, Rental furniture for developer show homes, project management, special planning, bathroom & kitchen design, window treatments & bespoke joinery.
A Styling Story’s style is the creation of bright spaces filled with eclectic, colourful influences whether that be in Furniture, Art, or Accessories. ‘A Styling Story’ offer a range of beautiful bespoke cushions on their ‘online store’ which are all designed in house and are all one of a kind. Art plays a big part in any design scheme which is where Steph might base a lot of the project’s bursts of colour to create the right atmosphere for the home.
Steph recently finished a residential project in Wimbledon. Her brief for this project was to add a warm country feel to a London pad. The client really wanted elements of the country inserted in his home making sure that it still suited the style of the property. The client had a large archive of photography and art that he wished to keep and use which is from where Steph stemmed the design process. These pieces added a very cool historical element to the property, and were a joy to work with, and pair both new and historic furniture pieces. .

The fitted furniture files
What the design world is coming to realise more than ever recently, is that what defines a home, is you. The people living in it. The modern home is focusing on expressing the personalities within it through decoration and design. This could be by displaying meaningful, memory-filled objects, by planning a room around a treasured work of art or by more actively placing the needs and preferences of a house’s occupants at the core of how it looks and functions. Houses are becoming as unique as the people within them, telling their stories and revealing their personalities.
That’s where fitted furniture comes in, pieces of practical storage created precisely for the space you need them in.
Think of fitted furniture and what first comes to mind may not be hugely inspiring. We’re here to prove you wrong. It’s an art form, not only designed to fit specifically into the space you need it in, but – yes – beautiful, creative, expressive as well as the very definition of useful.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about a bespoke piece that slides perfectly into place. Perhaps there’s an element of ASMR to it: look at how it lines up so perfectly with the ceiling. See how it fits so smoothly into that alcove. Watch how it skirts around the bumps in the wall. Feel how smoothly those doors glide open. Oooo.
Fitted furniture is about making the most of every centimetre. About stretching up high, adding an extra shelf, making room for more pairs of shoes or finally creating somewhere to house
that LP collection. It makes life easier and rooms smarter.
Chaplins’ range of beautiful, designer fitted furniture is ready and waiting to be crafted into shape around you, your home and those objects that you most care about, whatever they may be. The in-house fitted furniture expert Denis Barclay knows every trick in the fitted furniture book: here he talks through everything you need to know to ready your room for a bespoke storage piece.
How can Chaplins help with fitted furniture?
We offer a complete design and installation service. In the first instance, you are invited into our showroom to browse the options – during this initial meeting, we discuss the space you are considering and how you want to use the area, as well as any ideas you have and designs you like so we can make suggestions to better meet your brief. We then work from your plans or visit your home, depending on the stage of the project. It’s also important to establish the budget.
What falls under the category of ‘fitted furniture’? It’s more than wardrobes, right?
Over the 35 years, I have been involved with the furniture business, there are not many spaces that I have not planned fitted furniture for, inside or outside, be it under the stairs, boot rooms, TV rooms, studies, libraries, bedrooms, dressing rooms and craft workshops. Modular furniture is very
112 OCTOBER 2022 HOME & PROPERTY
adaptable. It’s only limited by the imagination, and of course the budget.
Which designer brands offer fitted furniture?
We work with premium Italian brands Lema, Molteni&C and Porro, and heritage German company Interlübke. They are modern and sleek, with finishes ranging from matt and high gloss lacquers to glass, metals, ceramics and veneers. There’s a lot to choose from.
Our Lema wardrobe studio showcases different styles of wardrobe in a range of finishes. We also have a door bar showing a small format selection of doors options.
What do I need to know before my fitted furniture consultation? Do I need to get out the tape measure?
The more information you can bring, then the more meaningful the initial meeting will be. Generally, we ask customers to have photos of the space, or architect’s plans if it’s under construction. It’s also helpful to really consider your storage requirements so that we can make best use of the space available.
What’s the timeline between consultation to installation?
After the first discussion, we’ll produce an initial plan and costing, then the process develops from there. In some instances, it can be very quick, while larger projects can take months. Then of course it takes 10-12 weeks for the furniture to be made and
delivered from the factory. Installation is quick – it usually takes a day for a conventional room, to a week or more on a larger project.
WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP?
DO I NEED TO COME INTO THE SHOWROOM? WHO DO I TALK TO?
Call us or email us at sales@chaplins.co.uk and we’ll discuss the best way to get started.
For more ideas on bespoke designer storage, see chaplins.co.uk, or book an appointment to visit the 25,000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Hatch End where you’ll find the latest shelves, doors and finishes under one roof.

Origin Indoor Pools - Top Considerations
So, you’ve decided on an indoor swimming pool, what now? There are many decisions to be made along the way, attention to detail and precise planning are crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house.
For anyone wanting to begin the process, here are the answers to key questions to help with the decision-making:
Are you interested in a stand-alone indoor pool house or a pool house extension to your home?
This is the biggest decision you’ll need to make when it comes to your indoor swimming pool as placement and location play a crucial role in the
success of a project. There are advantages and disadvantages to both options. You’ll need to think about the main use for the swimming pool, do you want a place to escape away from the home or do you want it attached to your home? Will it play a big part in your daily routine? Do you have a budget you’re working towards?
Will you need planning permission?
For a stand-alone pool house, one that is freestanding and complies with the permitted development design criteria, it’s likely you won’t need planning permission. However, a pool house extension to your home will need planning permission. Origin has a wealth of experience in gaining planning approval for indoor pools and

they also manage the whole process for you so, no need to panic!
Do you start with an architect?
No, Origin does it all. They provide initial design sketches and budgetary proposals free of charge in their feasibility studies. Architects are extremely well versed with domestic construction details, but unfortunately, an indoor pool is very different. An architect can provide an outline design for an indoor pool but this may be an unnecessary expense as many don’t have the knowledge or insurance needed to take that design further.
Which features have the biggest impact on cost?
The most popular size for an indoor pool is between 8m to 12m as the bigger the pool, the bigger the cost. For avid swimmers, there are some

excellent counter current swim devices available making the size of the pool less important. Buying a pool cover is one of the bigger investments you’ll make throughout the process but they’re worth it as an important part of the pool design. They retain heat, reduce running costs and provide a level of safety, making them a necessity rather than an option. When adding different features to your indoor swimming pool, it’s important to remember your original motivation. Did you want to create a place of relaxation? Your own fitness centre? A social hub for friends and family?
Why Origin?
It’s simple, Origin does it all. Building pools is a specialised field, it’s unlike any other building project and requires a holistic approach with all the key elements working together from the beginning. Origin has all the design and engineering expertise necessary and manages the whole building process for you, from initial concept, planning and design to completion and beyond, eliminating the need for you to employ separate companies. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim every day in the privacy of your own home, either to maintain a healthy lifestyle or simply as a space to relax. Origin has been building award-winning swimming pools for over 40 years and in that time has successfully completed thousands of pools and pool houses to a wide range of specifications. Whether you’re looking for indoor or outdoor, wellness or fun, Origin has experienced it all and is available to help you create your home pool managing every stage from start to finish, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy finally swimming in your own home.

Beautiful birds
North Yorkshire, UK - North & Nether’s newest wallpaper collection, Caged Bird, has been unveiled today. The sixth collection in the brand’s catalogue, Caged Bird features vintage bird illustrations with a trademark North & Nether twist.
According to Megan Slack at Homes & Gardens, bird motifs are trending because they represent freedom, optimism, and the ability to escape.
In addition to bird motifs, biophilic designs have featured on Real Homes roundup of wallpaper trends - and of course maximalist patterns are everywhere. The Caged Bird collection takes inspiration from these trends and reimagines them with birds in captivity, including elements both vintage and modern.
Four of the designs in the collection feature a different species of bird in a cage - either real or metaphorical. Magpie and Pigeon are more traditional patterns, while Rifle and Roller have more modern lines.
Magpie has the namesake bird flying amid irises, seemingly aware of the mesh cage which surrounds them. Look closely in Pigeon, and you will see leg bands on a few of the birds.
Rifle has a vibrant teal background with a modern gate illustration - with other flora and fauna around, the birds look to find freedom.
Roller is a linear barbed wire print with the bird guarding its eggs.
Feather, a supporting pattern, is a dense motif
of abstract feathers in the collection’s signature teal colour.
Teal is the focal point of the collection - a timeless colour which, according to colour psychology expert Karen Haller on The Design Sheppard, evokes feelings of tranquillity, calm, peace, and balance - a direct contrast to the feelings of being held captive.
Mara Nieuwsma, Managing Director, comments on her colour choices: “I was drawn to the vivid teal feathers of the rifle and roller, and wanted to carry this hue through the collection, balanced with black, greys and beiges to make the designs more versatile. The cages arrived naturally through the creative process, in a desire to add something unexpected to a familiar motif.” northandnether.com

Back to basics with Warm Minimalism
Throughout the years we have seen many interpretations of Minimalism within the interior world, but one that is taking Autumn 2022 by storm is Warm Minimalism. Unlike its predecessor, a warm minimalist décor brings texture, comfort, and character to a simple yet functional living space. It is a trend that makes the most of organic shapes, patterns, textures, and natural materials while keeping a clutter-free, sleek environment. How do you incorporate the warm minimalist style into your home interior? Here are some Cult tips for the perfect cosy home…
Let’s start with the basics; for a warm minimalist scheme, you need to integrate a warm colour palette. Neutral tones like beige, off-white and creams are the building blocks of the trend –consider our Viola taupe dining chair and Illfra opal pendant light. With a soft boucle upholstery and sleek brass accents, these clean lines and curves will add a welcoming tone to your dining room or kitchen, which is amiss with typical minimalist décor.
If you are still feeling that your living space is lacking some texture, why not consider layering soft furnishings with natural materials and organic shapes/patterns. Consider our Lambert dining bench and our Orla neutral rug - with a natural
cane seat and a sturdy oak frame, the Lambert is a versatile piece that will slot into any dining space while working perfectly with the abstract face expression on the Orla. Add some depth to your bedroom by combining the soft organic curves on the Mhairi set of 3 stone vases in neutral, with the Luis ceramic hanging basket in mottled white -sure to increase the warmth!
Nevertheless, whatever way you decide to approach the ‘Warm Minimalism’ trend, we hope that these tips will help to increase the cosy factor in your décor and bring back the warmth to your space this Autumn. cultfurniture.com

SLOW FURNITURE: Choose Timeless Style
Born out of a fascination of French designs, textures, craftsmanship, heritage, and history, French Bedroom’s collections are fun and feminine - with quality at the core.
Founded by Georgia Metcalfe in 2006 with a mission to bring a more feminine approach to bedroom design and the overall shopping experience.
Feeling proud of your home should be a given, but between work, children, and home life, Georgia noticed that women wound up frustrated, searching in large retail parks with no inspiration unsure where to start.
She could see that rushed decisions and a lack of quality was leading to unnecessary consumption and avoidable waste. We all need a safe, calming, and comfortable space to retire to each evening. Beds and mattresses are a basic need. Unfortunately, due to new trends and lower standards of quality, approximately 6 million mattresses are sent to landfill each year, taking up 3.6 million cubic metres of landmass, the equivalent of 32,000 double decker buses.
French Bedroom deliberately create durable furniture, placing quality over speed or trends. French furniture is both timeless (the designs have been in trend for over 400 years since the Louis kings!) and future-proof, they provide a home with character that can be passed through the generations.
Georgia’s mission is to provide furniture with the potential to be passed down to the next generation; to prevent each French Bedroom customer from consuming more than needed within their lifetime and to help protect the earth’s finite natural resources. The company’s Vispring mattresses are guaranteed for 30 years.
French Bedroom’s all-female design team consider the little details that make women feel understood - curves, hidden drawers, piped trims, fluted legs, textured fabrics, and nature-inspired colours. Product quality is the number one priority and fans of French Bedroom describe their pieces as ‘Antiques of the Future’, the perfect pairing of elegance and practicality.
Events like Black Friday have an extremely detrimental effect on craftmanship. High end and quality retailers are unable to cut their prices due to the craftsmanship and work that goes into each piece. Many high-street retailers mass-produce furniture, and have been known to reduce the quality of their product in order to discount on days like Black Friday.
In addition to beautifully considered beds, French Bedroom have curated a collection of gowith furniture including cabinets, chests, armoires, and accessories spanning mirrors, lighting, and linens. Every item is styled by Georgia in her Sussex home and available to buy online.
With one promise - if you look after it, it will become your future family heirloom.

TREND ALERT: Terracotta Style Tile
The terracotta-style tile, simple and organic, yet with so many styling options!
As home owners embrace a more nostalgic, soulful interior, natural and traditional style finishes are once again in demand. One such product is the wonderfully organic terracotta-style tile. Available in a number of sizes and colours, its unmistakable rustic charm can grace so many interior styles. From a humble country cottage, a grander country house, to a more modern rustic interior and in each setting it is guaranteed to anchor the room scheme with a natural rustic warmth and character.
When you talk about terracotta, one thinks of handmade tiles moulded from simple clay, showing rustic imperfections and a lot of natural charm. These artisan tiles have graced our homes for centuries, but to retain their beauty they require a lot of maintenance, in the form of sealing.
The humble terracotta tile is very porous, as a result it can stain easily and once a stain gets into the body of the tile it is almost impossible to remove it, hence the importance of sealing the tile to give protection. Due to the body of the tile being so absorbent, this will also limit its use to the interior of our British homes, as once moisture penetrates the body of the tile, frost can split itoh to have a Mediterranean climate!
Fortunately there is a now a new type of terracotta-style tile, a tile that require no maintenance, as the body of the tile is non-porous.
Baked Tiles have been sourcing the globe to find the very best of this style of product and whilst they no longer require laborious treatments, they
don’t lack any of the rustic charm, or characterful imperfections associated with old school terracotta.
Casa Cotto, a rustic terracotta style product, comes in two colours, two sizes and two finishes. Natural finish ideal for walls and floors and antislip, perfect for shower floor, pool surrounds and patios. So it’s now possible to have a rustic terracotta floor that seamlessly flows from your kitchen into the garden.
Country is a pre-aged tile collection that looks perfect in traditional settings. Available in both brick and hexagon shapes - it’s beautiful, giving a space a finish that will look as if its been in-situ since the house style was conceived. The Hexagon white also looks incredible in Skandi style interiors, its warm white finish looks great in more stripped back setting.
Finally Marrakesh, is as the name implies , is a Moroccan inspire collection, featuring Bejmat and Zellige style tiles. These can be combined to create unmistakeably Morish, style schemes, or the terracotta style tiles look equally as wonderful in simple Skandi or contemporary style settings. bakedtiles.co.uk
