TWO STUNNING TCHAIKOVSKY BALLETS TAKE TO THE STAGE ACCOMPANIED BY A LIVE ORCHESTRA

The Russian State Ballet presents THE NUTCRACKER SWAN LAKE Thursday 29 November

Friday 30 November

T

he perfect pre-Christmas treat, the Russian State Ballet return to Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre from Thursday to Friday, November 29 to 30 to present two beautiful Tchaikovsky ballet classics for the whole family. Both ballets are presented by an impressive cast, accompanied by a live orchestra featuring more than 30 musicians, with The Nutcracker gracing the Guildford stage on Thursday, November 29 and Swan Lake on Friday, November 30. Based on ETA Hoffmann’s novella, The Nutcracker tells the magical story of Marie; a little girl whose godfather Drosselmeyer gives her a Nutcracker doll as a present on Christmas Eve. And so begins her enchanting adventure as the doll transforms into a Prince… Set to Tchaikovsky’s incredible score, romance and verve infuse with classical dancing, as glorious renditions of favourite pieces such as The Waltz of the Flowers and The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy are presented. A compelling legend of romance and mystery, Swan Lake explores the tale of Odette, a beautiful Princess who is turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer. From the impressive splendour of the palace ballroom to the moonlit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, Swan Lake is undoubtedly one of the most romantic ballets of all time.

GUILDFORD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF MUSIC MAKING

A

concert of great Russian Masterpieces on November 24 at G Live marks/ marked the start of Guildford Symphony Orchestra’s Centenary Season – a stunning achievement for an organisation made up of local musicians from every walk of life. Since its foundation in 1919, the Guildford area has produced a continuum of amateur musicians playing to an incredibly high standard, generation after generation. Doctors, teachers, lawyers, housewives, students, techy whizzes, accountants and more – this area has been rich in musical talent for 100 years. GSO now performs five concerts a year. Under musical director Darrell Davison it specialises in the grand symphonic works of the 19th and 20th centuries and also works with young soloists and encourages a love of music in young children. Vibrant, up for challenges and still full of enthusiasm, GSO is ready for its next century! The orchestra was created by an extraordinary man who had been a towering musical force in the Army during the First World War. Claud Powell was a man of incredible drive and enthusiasm who believed in the power of music to heal the country. He had an ambitious vision to set up series of subscription concerts across the South East. Reality kicked in and Guildford Symphony Orchestra was born, providing a huge range of concerts involving local choirs and drawing critical acclaim from the national press. Powell had an enviable network of friends and contacts across the musical world. Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Dame Ethel Smyth, Leon Goossens, John Ireland, Myra Hess, Roger Quilter, Arthur Bliss, Charles Groves and Adrian Boult all admired his commitment to music-making and in particular his promotion of English composers. Come the end of the Second World War however, and councils were encouraged to support and provide music for the public. Powell understandably refused the peremptory summons to hand over his orchestra to the borough with no 1 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

role for himself. Suddenly there were two orchestras in Guildford. The borough had created the professional Guildford Philharmonic. Powell soldiered on, his achievements recognised with an OBE, Hon RAM and Hon RCM for services to British Music. After his death in 1959, the orchestra continued under Ralph Nicholson, but its fortunes dipped in the 1970s-80s until Darrell Davison took up the baton in 1990. Under Davison, the GSO developed a new profile: to perform good music, encourage young talent and support local charities. The 1990 chairman Robin Chase was inspirational, involving members of the orchestra in publicity, social events and fundraising and the orchestra took on a new zest for life. Davison attracted an excellent wind section followed by brass, and with professional violinist Rosemary Roberts as leader, the standard rapidly rose again. Davison set about tackling a wide range of music with vigour and excitement and inaugurated a carol writing competition for local schoolchildren and a competition for young soloists, where the winners perform at the popular Young Artists Concerts. The GSO also performs special family concerts to encourage a love of classical music in young children. Peter and the Wolf was the highlight of this autumn’s family concert. Where does the orchestra perform? It has always struggled to find suitable venues. It started 100 years ago in St Nicholas’ Hall, the Technical College Hall and the Borough Hall in North Street. More recently it used the Civic Hall, Guildford Cathedral and Spectrum Leisure Centre. Now it centres on G Live, St Catherine’s School concert hall and Charterhouse Hall. The Philharmonic was disbanded in 2013 because of council cuts. So it is once again, the premier symphonic orchestra in the borough. This spring, as part of the GSO Centenary Season, it will play St John’s Smith Square on March 23 before returning to G Live on May 18. Come and support it. New members are always welcome too.

THE DETAILS The orchestra practises in Guildford on Tuesday nights. Information about concerts and membership can be found on the website: www.g-s-o.org.uk.

THE NEW HAMPTON HOP OAST

T

he grand opening of the new oast and hop picking machine on the Hampton Estate at Puttenham on September 7 marks the revival of Surrey’s ancient hop industry that once stretched unbroken from Guildford to Farnham. Instead of a ribbon, a hop bine was cut by Mayor of Guildford, Mike Parsons, using the Hampton hop-sampling knife. Oast and hops were blessed by the Rector of Seale, Sands and Wanborough, Rev Stephen Thatcher, signalling the start of a traditional harvest party. Hampton hops grow on the gault clay at the base of the Hog’s Back and for the first time in decades, an extra nine acres have been planted with Fuggles. “We wanted to expand our Fuggles production because of demand,” explained Bill Biddell. “Our 14 acre hop garden was not big enough to be sustainable and our picking equipment was falling to bits so we had to do something.” The new oast and hop picking machinery are tucked away on the Hampton Estate. The stateof-the-art, English-made Bruff machine strips the bines, and the oast itself houses a Heath Robinsonesque system of gantreys and conveyor belts taking the hops to the elevated drying floors. It represents a fantastic statement of confidence in the future of English hops. “There is only about one person left in England who knows how to set up a hop garden or build an oast,” said Bill. “The skills involved are incredible. We put the plants in first, then about 700 timber poles from the estate and miles of wire to form a tensioned matrix.” The oast was designed and hand built on site by amazing husband and wife team Albert and

Rachel Philpin. They also completely rebuilt the replacement hop picking machine, rescued from a shed in Worcestershire where it had been lying neglected for five years. “I have to make everything myself,” said Albert. “I order all the steel and it’s delivered on the floor here and I make it from that. I have all the design in my head. My wife paints it. We make a good team. I’m the only one who does this hop kiln system now. I’m 75 years old but I still work because I absolutely love it.” The drying machinery was built by John Madigan of Octagon Products Ltd who has worked with Albert for years. There are only 52 hop growers left in England but this is the second hop garden to be planted in Surrey in the last few years. The Biddells helped the Hogs Back Brewery set up a small garden at Tongham, so Surrey hops are enjoying a welcome revival. Harvesting the bines is done by machine but processing hops is a matter for teamwork - a traditional student activity and social event, this year masterminded by Molly Biddell. The finished hops go to regional breweries across the UK. Fuggles is a classic English aroma hop. You can taste the difference when you drink a pint of Hogs Back TEA. Hampton Fuggles is a staple ingredient!

BOX HILL RUNNERS URGED TO GET TOUGH ON CANCER

South-East runners seeking a new challenge are being urged to sign up now for Cancer Research UK’s Tough 10.

T

he charity is daring people to brave the elements and sign up now for its 10k trail run, which takes place in Surrey at Box Hill on November 17. The event gives participants the chance to pitch themselves against the elements, while taking on the challenge of muddy trails, steep hills and uneven terrain – to raise money for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research. The charity’s Tough 10 series offers runners the opportunity to set a new kind of personal best, with a choice of three different levels of difficulty to choose from at events across the UK. Georgina, Cancer Research UK Event Manager, said: “We know the South-East have got what it takes to tackle Tough 10 and we’re delighted to be hosting the event again at Box Hill. “Every day, around 130 people in the South-East are diagnosed with cancer*. That’s why we need as many people as possible to double knot their trainers and take on our stamina-testing course. “If the steep inclines don’t take participants’ breath away, the stunning views will, along with the

2 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

knowledge that every stride they take will help bring us closer to beating cancer sooner.” One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. The Box Hill route is ranked toughest. Organisers hope around 500 people will enter Tough 10 in Box Hill and raise around £30,000 to help Cancer Research UK continue investment in research to help find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat over 200 types of cancer. Cancer Research UK spent over £33 million in the South-East last year, on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research. Georgina continued: “We’ve got cancer on the run. Half of people diagnosed with the disease now survive. But half is not enough. That’s why we urgently need as many people as possible to sign up for Tough 10. aving worked in the luxury hotel industry for over 20 years Daryl always envisioned opening his own restaurant, and felt that Esher needed an independent restaurant where people could dine in an upmarket setting, with great service and good food, all for a reasonable price. The Interior décor is indeed elegant, with feature wallpaper, plush fabrics and original artwork that gives the room a warm and cozy feel with out feeling stuffy or too formal. While Seven Bluebirds does not sell itself as finedining, everything is made on site using the freshest ingredients, from some of the the best suppliers in the country. They tend to only use smaller suppliers who have the same passion for top quality produce and provenance. One of their signature dishes, Beef Short Rib Bourguignon is a prime example of this. The Beef ribs are provided by Royal Warrant holders Aubrey Allen, and then the team of chefs at the restaurant embark on a 3 day process of slowly braising the ribs and creating a complex, flavour filled sauce for the dish. Daryl is very proud of his menu which he has created with Head Chef Ronnie O’Driscoll. The menu comprise likes of; duck breast with braised red cabbage and crispy potatoes; squid and red mullet linguini; a burger (made on the premises) as well as a selection of rather tempting desserts - think cardamom creme brûlée with ginger short bread biscuit! They also serve breakfast all day featuring the classics like Eggs Benedict, Royale & Florentine, as well as a Full English (with an interesting twist) and a delightful warm banana bread with fresh berries and mascarpone. MAJOR NEW ITV DRAMA SERIES VANITY FAIR FILMED AT WEST HORSLEY PLACE

I

TV’s new adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel, Vanity Fair, is set to become one of the biggest TV dramas of the year – and much of the action was filmed at Grade I listed West Horsley Place. With a stellar cast including Olivia Cooke, Tom Bateman, Johnny Flynn, Martin Clunes, Frances de la Tour, Suranne Jones and Michael Palin, West Horsley Place provides the setting for Queen’s Crawley in this adaptation of Thackeray’s literary classic, which takes place during the Napoleonic Wars and follows modern heroine Becky Sharp (Olivia Cooke) as she attempts to claw her way out of poverty and scale the heights of English Society. The series will be screened on ITV this autumn over seven episodes starting on Sunday 2 September at 9pm. West Horsley Place is an ancient 380 acre estate separating the Surrey villages of West and East Horsley, at the centre of which stands a Grade I listed manor house dating from the 15th century. With remarkably surviving interiors from the 16th to the 18th century and with little 19th or 20th century intervention, West Horsley Place displays the evolution of architecture during this period. The house has passed through the hands of illustrious owners including Henry VIII – who enjoyed a 35 course lunch in the Stone Hall - Carew Raleigh, son of Sir Walter Raleigh, and Lady Elizabeth Fitzgerald, ‘Fair Geraldine’ of the Earl of Surrey’s famous sonnet. Queen Elizabeth I is known

to have stayed on several occasions. More recently, in 2014 historian and former presenter of University Challenge, Bamber Gascoigne, unexpectedly inherited West Horsley Place from his aunt, Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe. Decades of benign neglect had taken their toll on the house and also on the eight Grade II listed structures situated on the estate. In October 2016, West Horsley Place was placed on the Historic England ‘At Risk’ Register. To rescue and restore the house and estate, and to give them a new life and purpose, Bamber and Christina Gascoigne have generously transferred ownership of West Horsley Place to a charity, the Mary Roxburghe Trust. Once restored, West Horsley

“West Horsley Place displays the evolution of architecture during this period” Place will become a vibrant centre for the performing and visual arts, and for the teaching of crafts. An important first step in achieving this goal is the construction of the Theatre in the Woods, a new 750 seat theatre that will be a great asset to the local community. The use of West Horsley Place as a location for film and TV provides essential income to fund restoration works as well as fitting into West Horsley Place’s ethos as a home for the arts. Commenting, Peter Pearce, Director of West Horsley Place, said: “We were thrilled to be chosen as a location for Vanity Fair, and are very much looking forward to seeing West Horsley Place on television this autumn.” “Literature is all-important to the story of this great house. When Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe died, in addition to the bequest to Bamber Gascoigne was a bequest to Trinity College, Cambridge of 7,500 books held in the library at West Horsley Place collected by the Duchess’ father and grandfather and recognised as “one of the most important private collections in Britain.” Amongst the treasures to have been discovered here were first editions by Byron, Shelley, Wordsworth and Tennyson and previously unknown manuscripts of Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, Florence Nightingale and Charles Dickens. Now, at the Wren Library, these treasures are available to everyone.” He continued: “Through film, we are able to celebrate these literary links and to take a step closer to saving West Horsley Place. Our vision is that West Horsley Place will be reborn as a place for everyone to enjoy, whether as an opera guest, visitor to the house or garden or as a student learning a craft to enjoy and practice at home. There is a great history to be discovered, and a new role for this grand old house to play in its community. It will be an entrancing future!” Martin Clunes, who plays Sir Pitt Crawley in the adaptation, said: “West Horsley was my favourite of all of the houses we visited. Freezing but beautiful. It’s colder inside than out. But it is really pretty. And it looks real, lived in and a bit wonky.” www.westhorsleyplace.org

rom her earliest royal engagements, everything Diana wore was closely scrutinised. In this elegant exhibition at her former London home, Diana’s relationship with her favourite designers will be explored through a display of some of their original fashion sketches created just for the Princess. The exhibition highlights how she navigated her unique position in the public eye: learning to use her image to engage and inspire people, and to champion the causes she cared about. Eleri Lynn, curator of ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’, said, ‘Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most photographed women in the world, and every fashion choice she made was closely scrutinised. Our exhibition explores the story of a young woman who had to quickly learn the rules of royal and diplomatic dressing, who in the process put the spotlight on the British fashion industry and designers.’ Don’t miss this extraordinary collection of garments, ranging from the chic Catherine Walker suits that made up Diana’s ‘working wardrobe’ and glamorous evening wear including the iconic velvet gown famously worn at the White House when the Princess danced with John Travolta. Let’s talk fee assistance M

any parents believe that their child needs to be awarded a scholarship in order to receive financial help from a school. This isn’t the case. Over 168,000 private school pupils (33% of all pupils) get some sort of financial help. The 2018 ISC annual census shows that many schools have extended bursary provision in the last year providing almost £400m means-tested fee assistance for pupils. The ways in which schools assess how they are going to give families a bursary have now become much more generous and will continue to do so.

“Over 200 of the UK’s leading schools all under one roof” So why do schools offer bursaries? It goes back to the mission of most independent schools, where the founders wanted to pay for poor scholars to have an education for social mobility and the alleviation of poverty. It’s in the schools’ ethos. As Mark Bailey (High Master of St Paul’s School) and David Goodhew (Headmaster of Latymer Upper), both agreed in our education theatres last year, diversity in independent schools benefits all pupils. ‘Our parents want us to be a school for people 4 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

from all walks of life, from diverse backgrounds, culturally, social-economically, because it helps one feel like real life in the modern world.’ – David Goodhew, Headmaster of Latymer Upper We can’t tell you how much financial aid you might receive as schools differ widely in how they make decisions and, of course, how much money they have for such purposes. Some schools, such as St Paul’s, consider families with a surprisingly high overall level of income (£120,000) whereas others have a much lower income threshold. Schools are autonomous when it comes to offering fee assistance – there are no fixed rules. The best way to find out what each school has to offer, and if you could be considered for some sort of financial aid, is to speak individually to the schools. At the Independent Schools Show, we have over 200 of the UK’s leading schools all under one roof, providing parents with the perfect opportunity to meet schools one-to-one and get your questions answered. You can also hear from experts in the field in our two education theatres, covering topics such as affordability. www.schoolsshow.co.uk

Step into the most exciting school in England “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised”

A

lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for. Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eyecatching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time 4 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.” Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.” Who could ask for anything more?

Opening the door to

your child’s future A

A guide to School Open Days

s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? • What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? 5 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

• What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

What’s the difference between A levels and IB Diploma? subjects you study on average with A levels. The difference with the IB Diploma is that these subjects are just one part of a qualification which teaches you how to develop an inquiring mind and critical thinking, then apply your knowledge to the world around you. An A level and IB Diploma exam question will look similar on paper. Only a quarter of the Diploma student’s assessment will be on their knowledge, whereas in the A level, 80% of the exam is measuring their knowledge. The IB Diploma assessment will also be testing that you are skilled in analysing and presenting information; that you can evaluate and construct arguments and that you can solve problems creatively. The IB Diploma also involves completing an Extended Essay (4000 words, similar to the EPQ), plus Community Action Service, which must involve some combination of sport, art or community service. Also key is a course in the Theory of Knowledge, which teaches students how to learn effectively, regardless of the subject – a key skill for their future!

nthony Seldon, Vice Chancellor of Buckingham University said in a recent article “If we persist with passive learning, as at present, AI will eat us alive within just a few years.” The passive learning he was talking about was A levels. You could argue that an A levels with its passive approach to learning is a 20th century qualification, and the IB Diploma is a qualification for the 21st century. The IB Diploma involves studying six subjects, three at Standard Level and three at Higher Level, rather than just the three 5 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

This in turn makes the IB Diploma an ‘all round’ or holistic qualification, well suited to our multicultural, fast paced, digital 21st century lives. A good IB school, like at ACS Egham, will also teach time management and study skills to help students complete their Diploma, and so, not surprisingly, universities prize the IB over and above a number of other qualifications. “Scientific studies have shown that HA fillers can stimulate the formation of heathy skin tissue and new collagen”

Dermal Fillers: Friend or Foe?

Cosmetic specialist, Dr Peter Forrester answers some questions and clears up some misunderstandings about dermal filers. What are dermal fillers?

Are dermal fillers safe?

The term Dermal Filler refers to a group of injectable clear gels designed to lift and plump skin. They are commonly based on hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in many body tissues including the skin where it has important functions maintaining structure and hydration. HA binds to water in the skin, locking in moisture. As we get older the amount of hyaluronic acid in skin gradually diminishes which in part is responsible for many of the appearances of skin ageing.

Restylane was the first HA filler and has been in use for over 20 years. Since introduction HA filers have been used tens of millions of times. Hence, we now know a great deal about both their benefits and safety. Because the HA in fillers is very similar to the HA that exits naturally under the skin they are very well tolerated with a minimal chance of allergic reactions. Infrequently inflammatory reactions can occur resulting in areas swelling or firmness. These usually settle without treatment but can be resolved by the use of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves HA. It should be stressed that in the right hands dermal fillers are very safe. They should only be used by properly qualified and experienced healthcare professionals.

Will it be obvious that I have had a filler treatment or will I look pumped up? Images in the media of hugely plumped lips and cheeks and the so-called trout-pout have given HA dermal fillers an undeservedly bad reputation. Correctly used they will result in a natural and rejuvenating appearance with no risk of an over-treated look. The paradox of filler treatments is this, when they are obviously over-done everybody notices but when properly used the results are subtle. People see the ‘bad’ ones but don’t notice the ‘good’ ones – this leads to a belief that all filler treatments will produce a bad result.

What areas can be treated with fillers? Fillers can be used to: • replace lost volume in cheeks and lips • reduce deep and fine surface lines including smokers lines around the mouth • lift the jowls • stimulate and hydrate the skin

How long do HA fillers last? Injected hyaluronic acid is slowly broken down in the body. The beneficial effects of a treatment can be expected to last for up to 12 months. However, this will depend on a number of factors including patient age, area treated, quantity of filler injected, skin quality, general health and lifestyle including smoking. It was once believed that once all the hyaluronic acid had been broken down it would have no further benefit. However scientific studies have shown that HA fillers can stimulate the formation of heathy skin tissue and new collagen. This boost to the body’s own collagen may help to explain why smaller volumes of filler are often required during top up treatments and why some people seem to derive significant benefit for 18 months or longer.

Dr. Peter Forrester and Ms. Helen McEvoy offer: Non Surgical Treatments • Anti-wrinkle Injections - reduce frown lines and crow’s feet. • Dermal Fillers - smooth deeper lines and furrows as well as returning lost volume to the face. • Thread Lift - minimally invasive procedure where surgical threads are used to lift and support cheeks, jowls and neck. • Profhilo - Increases firmness, elasticity as well as an overall improvement in skin quality for the face, neck and décolletage. • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) - natural anti-ageing skin rejuvenation treatment using small amounts of recipient’s

WEEK HIGHLIGHTS From Beckham to Burberry, all the news from the spring/summer collections. WORDS: Katie Wright

A

s catwalks are being dismantled and the giant blow-up Burberry bear that’s been seated at Marble Arch is deflated, the world’s most in-demand models, make-up artists, editors and buyers are hotfooting it to Milan for the next round of shows, which means London Fashion Week is officially done and dusted for another season. And what a season it’s been. We’ve seen much-anticipated debuts, the return of established names and the revamp of one very famous brand, all in the space of five action-packed days. So what does all this tell us about what’s in the store for spring/summer 2019? Here’s all the news you might have missed from the biggest shows at the British style extravaganza...

victoria beckham

Alexa Chung Style icon turned designer Chung has long been a regular on the fashion week front row, but this season she was behind the scenes, holding the first ever show for her eponymous clothing brand. The 34-year-old was on a flight of fancy for spring, calling the collection ‘Arrivals and Departures’, which meant a holiday wardrobe of floaty midi dresses, safari style tailoring and travel-friendly jumpsuits, all in a muted 1970s colour palette. While other designers try to - and need to - grab headlines with zany clothing and make-up, Chung kept it simple and played to her major strength: Knowing exactly what women want to wear.

Victoria Beckham Celebrating 10 years of her own eponymous brand, Victoria Beckham showed in London for the first time after a decade on the New York schedule, but insisted the collection wasn’t a retrospective. Of course, there were the signatures Beckham has become known for - breezy silk midi dresses, sharp tailored jackets and bodycon knitwear for instance - while there was also a freshness in the use of colour and the sexiness of it all. Spaghetti strap and racer back slip dresses were as revealing as we’ve seen on the VB catwalk in

some time, and flashes of scarlet packed a punch. It was the skinny ankle-split trousers, however, which Beckham herself wore, that we think will be the big hit of SS19.

Burberry “This show is a celebration of the cultures, the traditions and the codes of this historic fashion house and of the eclecticism that makes up the beautifully diverse United Kingdom,” said Riccardo Tisci, Burberry’s newly appointed chief creative officer. In typically rebellious Tisci style, the show began with a slew of ladylike pencil and pleated skirts, pussy-bow blouses and paired-back trench coats, the bait and switch coming in the second half... Models on the catwalk during the Burberry SS19 show (Isabel Infantes/PA) The soundtrack surged and out came a riot of skin-tight zippered miniskirts, corseted dresses and punky vinyl coats. Judging by the reaction on social media, Burberry purists weren’t best pleased with the latter but the elegant opening impressed many.

Julien Macdonald If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, they say, and that seems to be the mantra of Julien Macdonald, who returned to the London schedule after a season’s sabbatical. Consequently we were treated to the usual all-out glam fest, a parade of glittering, sharp-shouldered gowns and extremely skimpy minidresses. Alongside the usual black and silver, there were pops of bright yellow, tangerine and fuchsia - expect to see these colourful creations on the red carpet once spring rolls around.

burberry

Rich fabrics? Check. Fabulous florals? Yep. Glamorous gowns? Plenty of them. All of the elements that make Erdem a favourite of red carpet walkers everywhere (not least the Duchess of Cambridge) were present on Monday, the stunning collection bolstered by a fascinating backstory. Erdem Moralioglu said he was inspired by Fanny and Stella, a pair of nineteenth century crossdressers who were, given fashion’s current obsession with all things genderless, well ahead of their time. Combining mannish tailoring with voluminous dresses in raspberry and duck egg blue, this opulent Victoriana look was a resounding victory for Erdem.

Isabel Infantes /PA Photos

Preen Alexa Chung wasn’t the only one thinking about travel for spring. At Preen, there was a nomadic theme and the show traversed eras too as vintage ruffles were clashed with cagoules and hiking boots. Models on the catwalk during the Preen SS19 show (Isabel Infantes/PA) Designers Thea Bregazzi and Justin Thornton said they had been thinking a lot about displaced peoples this season, but this wasn’t just lip service: The pair have pledged that a percentage of sales from the collection will go to charity Help Refugees.

Creating a

Stylish Bathroom

Bathroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.

A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look.

THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness.

AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone 7 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household.

LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll holder and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A wellchosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

Take the floor To put on a fantastic floor show in your kitchen or bathroom, start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards

VINYL FLOORING

Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most cost effective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner.

STONE OR SLATE Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you.

LAMINATE This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, 8 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer.

HARDWOOD A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again.

CERAMIC TILES A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating. Choosing your kitchen flooring is as crucial as choosing the overall theme for your kitchen, so consult a specialist designer for further advice.

REASONS TO INVEST IN A QUALITY BATHROOM SUITE Designed and installed by experts 1 A fabulous bathroom adds value to your property Due to the relative permanence of a bathroom installation (fixing of tiles, plumbing arrangements etc), it is important to take your time and plan to achieve a quality finish. At worst, a poorly composed installation or unfashionable bathroom suite choice can put off would-be buyers, thereby reducing sale value of your property. At best, a high quality bathroom suite can improve the value of your home, potentially adding more to its overall value than you spent on the products and installation. Hence, this is one instance when it pays to spend a little extra on good quality, branding and design.

a bathroom design service can provide inspiring and practical solutions for using even the smallest of spaces in an attractive and efficient way. A designer will listen to your needs and provide you with concepts and visuals that provide that extra confidence when purchasing. 3 Safety Most bathroom installations include elements of electrical works (lighting, mirrored cabinets, shaver sockets, underfloor heating etc), and all include plumbing works, of course. These tasks, along with potentially complex tiling, should all be undertaken by qualified and experienced tradespeople. To correct poor workmanship at a later date can be disproportionately costly and most certainly disruptive. In the case of shoddy plumbing, leaks can cause hugely expensive damage and incorrect electrical installations can be potentially life threatening.

2 Better design Unless you are a bathroom expert, or experienced in renovations, replacing your bathroom suite is likely to involve replacing existing pieces, in current positions. It doesn’t necessarily have to be this way though. In some instances changing the layout of a bathroom is unnecessary, or impossible, but seeking the guidance of a specialist will help confirm that, or open your eyes to other possibilities. If an existing layout isn’t working for your family,

4 Buy cheap buy twice Cutting corners and costs initially is almost certainly not going to cut costs in the long term. It stands to reason that the cheapest bath tubs, shower trays and brassware on sale in the UK are also the least costly to produce. This often means unidentifiable branding (which leads to difficulty obtaining spare parts in years to come), poor quality china surfaces, poorly engineered valves, substandard plating and so forth. Given that labour costs in bathroom installations equal or exceed material costs, failing to invest in superior, well-functioning and durable products will only lead to repeat labour costs to repair and exchange items earlier than necessary.

Bathroom design using Virtual Worlds CAD software

5 Finishing touches shouldn’t be missed Never underestimate the impact and power of beautiful accessories such as mirrors and towel rails, the effect of a layered lighting scheme, a water softener to keep your metal and china surfaces shiny and new looking and in good working order and the final small details such as fluffy and luxurious towels. All these elements combine to finish your bathroom, giving it the style and feel of an indulgent hotel experience – a wonderful place to relax in your home. A professional bathroom expert will remind you of these finishing details, to ensure everything is considered during the bathroom creation process.

Think smart Kitchen storage that delivers clutter free spaces

R

oundhouse, the multi-award winning, British design and manufacturing company of bespoke kitchens and other furniture was founded by architects and is design-led. Their signature understated aesthetic is influenced by contemporary architecture. Roundhouse believe that a perfectly organised and planned bespoke kitchen should be a thing of beauty, concealing hardworking, clever solutions for kitchen storage. In turn this delivers beautiful clutter free spaces that lets the architecture do the talking. Getting the most out of a custom-made kitchen however, requires an expert kitchen designer, with the knowledge and craft to devise the best possible design solution. The company places great emphasis on ensuring that their design process is a collaborative effort. Their expert designers establish the client’s priorities and work closely with them to achieve their goals. A good designer is really important when planning kitchen storage. Not least because kitchen technology is advancing, and new kitchen products are emerging all the time. Roundhouse kitchen designers are abreast of all the very latest developments in materials and finishes, appliances and components. They also have the widest access to a huge range of kitchen storage solutions. By working in conjunction with architects and interior designers early on in the process, the space can be designed accordingly, and clients don’t have to make compromises later. Designer Lauren Wright who is based in the Roundhouse Guildford showroom says, “Storage is crucial in any kitchen design and it pays to think smart at the outset. Soft close drawers are easier to use than cupboards for things used most often because there is clear visibility from above, with no need to search at the back. Advances in kitchen drawer runner technology offering a high load bearing capacity means that deeper, longer drawers

9 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

that will hold even the weightiest crockery are possible. Positioned next to the dishwasher means unloading straight into the drawer.” The ultimate upright storage solution comes in the form is the Roundhouse Fulham Pantry. Its capacious interior allows everything to be on view, with drawers deep enough for the largest cereal packets and spice or bottle racks built into the doors. Beautiful examples of this capacious larder can be seen in all Roundhouse showrooms. Renowned for its craftsmanship and innovative use of materials Roundhouse has its own R & D team developing new finishes and making furniture to any size and virtually any finish, colour or veneer in the company’s factory in Malvern, Worcestershire. Here cabinetmakers bridge the gap between centuries old traditions of workmanship and the latest technical innovations. becoming one of the most renowned landmarks in London and a Grade II listed building. OKA, who earlier this year opened an 11,000 sq. ft. store in the new Tunsgate Quarter in Guildford, designed a scheme to showcase some of their new Autumn/Winter collection in a stunning penthouse at Battersea Power Station. This elegant penthouse apartment overlooks the heart of London and the River Thames. Every element of the design has been carefully chosen by OKA’s team of interior designers, who have experience working on projects around the world. The large, bright, open-plan living area works perfectly when divided to create two spaces, one with a generously-sized L-shape sofa, and the other with a dining table. The room is both comfortable and sociable, ideal for entertaining guests and admiring the view. With the neutral sofa as a backdrop, the earthy tones and pops of red and purple in the cushions are perfect for autumn, but can easily be changed to follow the seasons. The addition of a few gold accents here and there add a dash of opulence.

Rugs have been used throughout the apartment to add colour and texture, softening the hardwood floors. OKA’s rug collection has been developed over many years, whilst working with the finest craftspeople in the world. The Cullinan Rug (shown in the sitting room) is one of our favourites, the mesmerising pattern of intertwining diamond shapes has been hand-knotted and then finished with tassels, providing the perfect focal point for the room. When OKA’s interior designers created the apartment, they wanted the interior to feel traditional but with a modern twist, to match the exterior of the building. This is evident in the dining area, where the classic design, including the beautiful hand-painted chinoiserie cabinet, is punctuated by contemporary goat-hair armchairs and dressed with rich, vibrant accessories. Finishing touches are important at OKA, and the large rustic dining table is styled with an array of faux flowers which add height and colour to the table setting, completing the scheme. If you’re considering redecorating, make life simple and use OKA’s talented interior design team. They have a wealth of experience and can help with any project, no matter how big or small. LIGHT UP YOUR HOME WITH A BEAUTIFUL ORANGERY “In the current uncertain housing market many people are looking to extend what they already have rather than choosing to move to a new property”

garden was a priority and they wanted to maximise the sunlight that they receive at the rear of their property whilst giving them a stylish new living space that connects the original house, the orangery and the garden in a seamless flow of space. Key to this was the roof style and as you can see the lantern roof we designed and installed as part of the overall design was key to working to their brief. From design to final build we managed the project for them ensuring that they were kept informed of all stages of the project and that our team were professional and courteous throughout the build timeline and we are extremely happy that Mr & Mrs Bannon are now enjoying their beautiful space.

Here is what they have to say: “We found all the Castle staff to be professional, tidy and efficient. Specialist teams were assigned to each stage of the well organised construction schedule. We are delighted with our new orangery, which has given us so much more space, and transformed our house.” – Mr & Mrs Bannon, Surrey

W

e talk to Paul Jones from Castle Conservatories, Surrey and London’s premier design and build orangery and conservatory company about how you can enhance your property with an elegant orangery and we look at a specific project that Castle have built recently in Surrey which showcases their beautiful designs. Paul says: In the current uncertain housing market many people are looking to extend what they already have rather than choosing to move to a new property. Whilst a traditional extension can be an option we find our clients are looking at alternative roofing solutions to maximise natural light rather than opting for the more conventional tiled options. With modern technology ensuring that energy ratings and insulation transform a more traditional garden room, a contemporary design extends your living space which then becomes a room that can be used 365 days of the year.

About the Project We were first approached by Mr & Mrs Bannon in 2017 when they started to think about how they wanted to extend the rear of their property. We spent time planning and designing the project and ensuring that we worked to the ideas of our client before beginning the build in 2018. urrey is a beautiful, green and affluent county and I’ve certainly enjoyed living here the last 11 years. Towards the end of April 2018, Surrey Police released its latest crime statistics and we are still one of the safest counties in the country. That said, it was reported that burglaries had increased for the first time in 10 years - the past year showing an 8.4 per cent rise (sadly reversing a downward trend). Surrey Police

has done great work in the past and are continuing to introduce steps to address the current situation. However, there’s never any harm in being proactive and taking precautions to ensure your family and possessions are protected. When I first got involved in the security door and window industry, I thought I knew at least a bit about doors and windows, having used them all my life. As it turned out, I had a bit of an eye-opener when it came to the ease and speed with which criminals can gain entry to a property through various types of locks and doors. Everything I saw from lock-picking to purely just kicking down the door made me realise that my front door had given me a false sense of security all this time. There are currently neighbourhoods in London where we’re helping to combat burglaries from mopeds crashing through front doors. A high-quality security door can do so much more than just keep intruders (not to mention wind, fire, water, cold and noise) out. It can improve your property’s aesthetic, raise its value and decrease the cost of your insurance. www.magnificentsecurity.co.uk Jacques du Preez 07804456965 jacques@magnificentsecurity.co.uk

Tiny Houses creating big memories! Mark Burton

from Tiny House Cabins tells us more…

A

s a child I grew up in an amazing space. An old hunting lodge in Virginia Water which was tucked away in the middle on a forest surrounded by 400 acres of trees we called “The Woods”. From a very young age, building camps and tree houses was almost an obsession, every project became more and more challenging with bigger and better ideas. Unfortunately my summer time hobby came to an abrupt end the day my grandmother found one of her dining room chairs up a tree along with other items from around the house which had seemed to have simply “Gone missing!” Last summer I went back to my childhood home to see if my first tree house was still standing and to my amazement... there she was. Unfortunately, half the roof was missing and the floor had long since rotted but the main structure was still “more or less” intact. Seeing it brought back so many memories of the times my mates and I had. The summer evenings up in the den eating chocolate biscuits which I seem to remember was the entry fee. Sitting round a camp fire cooking sausages on sticks, toasting marshmallows and telling scary stories. It was like a home from home. Having a background of building Extensions, Loft Conversions and Refurbishments I gained a huge amount of knowledge in structural methods which is paramount for any garden building project. Every property had its own set of challenges with clients wanting bigger and better dreams for their homes. Although the building trade was rewarding, the competition in this field was 1 0 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

extremely competitive so I felt it was time for a change. One thing was for sure, I had to” think outside the box” so I swapped career and moved into the Bespoke/Custom Built Garden Building business. I designed and built bespoke Garden Rooms for clients who could not find a standard design they wanted from companies on the internet. In 2012, I won an award for my achievements (Shedworking Best Design Award 2012) for my new “Tiny House” on wheels design. My Tiny House concept is receiving a huge amount of interest from Blogs, Newspapers and TV including The One Show, Grand Designs, George Clarkes Amazing Spaces, Gadget Man and many others. Most of the interest from the media came due to some wacky, one off designs which had a creative edge to them and WOW factor. Its quite surprising how even a small writers hut could warrant a three page spread in The Guardian and a mobile Pixie style cabin would be of interest to Channel 5 news, Sky news and Chanel Four’s “Shed of the Year competition” which we were finalists. If you are planning a project for a Garden Room, Summer House, a wacky shed or (Large or Small), please contact me, I love a challenge. www.tinyhouseuk.co.uk

ith over 50 years combined experience in the conservatory business, the directors of iCon Roofs know a thing or two about temperature differences and how to solve the problems many people experience. They pride themselves on carrying out conservatory and building work to the highest standard with all work undertaken by fully trained staff, giving you total peace of mind. They also promise to give potential customers a free, no obligation quotation along with no-nonsense conservatory roofing and insulated ceiling advice. An iCon replacement conservatory roof is solid, thermally efficient with an outstanding low “U Value”, delivering astonishing results, keeping conservatories much cooler in the summer and much, much warmer in the winter. The standard polycarbonate or glass roof system found in almost all UK conservatories has virtually no insulating properties, even if roof blinds are installed. This means most of the sun’s heat is conducted in the summer, making the room unpleasantly hot for everyday use. Conversely, in the winter months, it can be impossible to keep most 1 0 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

conservatories warm, because the same lack of insulation allows most of the heat to quickly escape. iCon Roofs can either install a new highly insulated lightweight complete replacement roof or refurbish your existing that will reduce the level of heat conductance found in an unaltered roof, making it vastly more efficient in matching the temperatures found in the rest of your home. Lettings Market Comment Q4 2018 I

love this point in the lettings calendar. It’s the time at which the market takes a breather and we have a chance to take stock of what has happened over the summer and to gear up for the busy run up to Christmas. Thankfully 2018 was a strong year for lettings in Surrey. This isn’t surprising when you take into account what’s been going on. Following all the turmoil of 2017 the market was revived and straight out of the blocks in January with transactions up at all levels. We welcomed seeing large numbers of oil companies relocating employees. This corporate market continued through the summer and has gone right up to September which is most unusual. What has been more interesting is the return of the domestic market with families selling their homes, avoiding chains and becoming renters again with cash in the bank. This is fuelled by a weak sales market which is probably here for the foreseeable future. Tenants are no longer panicking that if they don’t buy a house this year then by next year they will have risen out of reach. So amongst local families renting becomes the smart choice again. This resurgence in the number of tenants is starting to put pressure on supply. We didn’t see it happen fully in the summer but I suspect as we go into the Q1 of 2019 it will manifest itself more. Despite the governments ongoing war against investment landlords that has strangled the buy-to let market in recent years we are slowly seeing the stock levels being supported by accidental landlords instead. These owners are choosing not to sell in a sluggish market but to rent out their properties instead, providing a much needed life-line to the private rented sector. It’s a start but demand will only get greater so more is needed. This isn’t exclusive to small houses and flats. We have seen record rents in Elmbridge with £8,000 to £20,000pcm asking prices being snapped up by private tenants. They are deliberately choosing to spend their money on rent instead of handing

it over to Phillip Hammond in dizzying sums for stamp duty. We are all expecting a few years of uncertainty ahead but I believe the letting market should stay relatively stable through the turbulence. Having been in lettings for over 25 years, there is very little that we haven’t seen from crashes to peaks and everything in between. Knowledge is king in these matters so if you are considering letting your home for the first time or you are a seasoned multiple landlord looking for straightforward and informed advice, then don’t hesitate to contact us. CALA Homes offers Custom Build Design in Cranleigh I

f you’ve ever wanted a new home where you could choose a layout to match your lifestyle, head to the prestigious development of Amlets Place, Cranleigh, where award-winning housebuilder CALA Homes is offering buyers the chance to do just that. “We’re delighted to be introducing Custom Build for the first time for our new release of detached houses in The Brook design, which have two double bedrooms and a useful upstairs study,” said Nicki Dennis, Sales & Marketing Director. “The homes come with a choice of three different ground floor layouts so you can select the one which suits you best. “We expect the fully open plan option to be very popular but for people who prefer a separate sitting room leading out to the garden, or perhaps a large kitchen/dining room across the full width of the back of the house for great entertaining space, then there’s a design here for you too. Just let us know which one you’d like.” In addition to the choice of custom design layouts at Amlets Place, buyers of The Brook homes will also be able to choose from three different levels of specification. The Bronze level houses will be finished to CALA’s high quality standards complete with stainless steel kitchen appliances, gas central heating, double glazed windows and recessed LED lighting to the kitchen, bathroom and ensuite shower room. Additionally the Silver level specification includes a built in wardrobe for the master bedroom, Bosch kitchen appliances including dishwasher and washer/dryer, and Amtico flooring to the kitchen and bathrooms. This reflects the current market value of the house and the alternative Bronze and Gold levels will reflect the difference in costs for CALA to deliver the houses. For the top of the range Gold specification, owners can expect such luxury finishes as stone worktops, Siemens kitchen appliances, carpets, wardrobes to both bedrooms, bathroom furniture and chrome electrical switches. “Choosing the finishing touches for your home,

from the layout to the final finishes, is a very personal choice and with the chance to ‘custom build’ a home at Amlets Place, we’ll be working closely with our buyers and we’d like to think that they’ll be able to feel that the home is truly ‘theirs’ right from the start,” added Nicki. “The houses are perfect for downsizers but they are very spacious so are likely to have a wide appeal among buyers, especially with the option of really personalising the home.” With the first homes in The Brook design released for Custom Build, buyers can choose their options during the initial marketing period and prices start from £520,000. Other homes currently available at Amlets Place and ready to move into this Autumn include three bedroom homes The Hambledon, The Chiddingfold and The Loxwood, four-bedroom home The Ewhurst and five-bedroom home The Rudgwick.
