The New Ashgate Gallery invites members of the public to come and vote for their favourite Surrey artist.

he Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Surrey. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during open studio visits. The top scoring artists come together for a programme of events. There is a wide variety of artworks on show, all offering different materials and techniques: ceramics, glass, jewellery, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. During the exhibition, members of the public are encouraged to vote for an artist; and the artist with the most votes from public and judging panel, is named Surrey Artist of the Year 2017. The winner receives a bursary of £1,000 and a solo show. The shortlisted artists are Adam Aaronson, Jo Alwyn, Naomi Beevers, Mary Branson, Alex Freeman, Emma Godden, Niki Hearnshaw, Christine Hopkins, Su Jameson, Jule Mallett, Katie Netley, Alison Orchard and Ali Tomlin. During the exhibition, there will also be an opportunity to view work by Denise Jaques who was crowned the Surrey Artist of the Year in 2017. Denise creates mosaic artwork for interior and exterior spaces. Her work has a strong sense of colour, pattern and rhythm, and plays with the
idea of distorted reflections. She is fascinated with the journey of experimentation and excited by the unknown destination. The competition is organised in partnership with the Surrey Open Studios. It is supported by the Patricia Baines Trust. The Surrey Life magazine, which has a monthly section dedicated to the local art scene, is the official media partner of the competition. The competition is part of the Farnham Craft Town celebrations. The season includes workshops and free professional development events to artists - please contact the gallery for information and bookings. For more than 50 years, New Ashgate Gallery has supported artists and makers. It promotes and champions the best contemporary art and craft and provides an unparalleled resource in Farnham, Surrey and beyond. The Gallery curates an exciting programme of exhibitions in the market place and events for artists and the community. (Dr Outi Remes, Director, New Ashgate) Surrey Artists’ Open Studios is a county-wide membership scheme, offering the public direct access to artists and makers during an annual event in June, as well as offering artists a range of other benefits including specialist training and professional development. The scheme is thriving with over 370 members, 266 of whom participated in Open Studios and with about 15,500 visitors during two weeks in June. Our partnership with the New Ashgate Gallery, provides a highly valued opportunity for artists to work with a contemporary art and craft gallery, to develop their practice and promote their work. We were pleased to be able to offer online voting for the first time this year to encourage more visitors to cast their votes. (Jane McGibbon, Surrey Artists’ Open Studios Coordinator)

et far back from the road, the Grade 1 listed stately house is barely visible. Surrounded by 380 acres of open land, its defining feature is the handsome brick façade which greets visitors on arrival. Giving off the impression that the sprawling manor is younger than its age, the wall is, in effect, a free-standing one, concealing a 15th century timber-framed building. Step inside and the cold, stone-flagged interior is not quite as welcoming, but when you appreciate the full extent of the medieval history that this beguiling property is steeped in, the lack of warmth is the last thing that jumps out at you. Despite being in a state of disrepair, the architecture and preserved facets, such as 20th

century silk fabric wall coverings, oak beams, splendid sash windows, Tudor ceilings, antique paintings and paraphernalia that fill it, more than compensate for this. Indeed, West Horsley Place is nothing short of a national treasure. As you stand in the pillared Stone Hall, the former Great Hall, you cannot help but be transported back in time to when Henry VIII was invited to join his cousin, Henry Courtenay, for a 35-course lunch. Leading off the hall, the impressive Wren Library (named after Sir Christopher Wren) is a passionate collector’s dream, its beautiful bookshelves brimming with now, extremely rare books. Another wow factor has to be the spectacular drawing room on the first floor with its red silk-clad walls. And at the far end, a tiny box room known as the Geraldine Room, boasts a low relief decorative ceiling, parts of which bear Anthony Browne’s initials, the courtier to whom, in 1549, Henry VIII gave West Horsley Place. Outside, the divided and partially well-kept gardens with rich flora (the most enchanting rose shrubs), old fruit trees and ancient box hedges are flanked by early 18th century walls, one of which is a majestic ‘crinkle-crankle’. Taking the derelict dwelling under his wing to secure its future, Bamber Gascoigne, best known for presenting University Challenge, was one of the Duchess of Roxburghe’s many great nephews. He

“A survey revealed that the complete restoration would cost an eye-watering £10 million” Nobles and gentry have lavishly hosted royalty here for years, so it is only fitting that the main rooms can be hired out for special occasions and even as a film location (My Cousin Rachel). Gascoigne’s aspirations do not stop there. He hopes to transform the stables and barns into a venue for teaching arts and crafts. And, of course, his dream to encourage the performing arts is off to an impressive start with the creation of a four-tier opera house tucked away romantically in a glade. Celebrating the inaugural Grange Park Opera in ‘The Theatre in the Woods’ this summer, is certainly a triumph for him to sing about. “It’s not every day someone proposes building an opera house in your garden,“ he says with a twinkle in his eye.
had no inkling he was the heir to the estate. “After her death, I was asked to attend a meeting in the capacity as one of my aunt’s executors, or so I had thought,” he says. It transpires that the big surprise came for him when he was referred to a page in the will which stipulated he was the new owner. “I did my best to look calm and collected,” he smiles. On discovering that the Duchess had expected her home to be sold after her death, Gascoigne discloses that he thought this would have been a bit feeble: “I felt I should at least attempt to revive it.” A survey revealed that the complete restoration would cost an eye-watering £10 million. “I hadn’t fully acknowledged the extent of gradual neglect and the many long-abandoned rooms,” he admits. As the months went by, he and his wife Christine, grappled with how to tackle, what seemed, at the time, a daunting project. To raise funds, the Duchess’s possessions were auctioned by Sotheby’s. Fetching a staggering total of £9 million, her Cartier diamond engagement ring sold for £167,000, 14 times its estimate. Gascoigne’s spirits lifted further when he decided to establish a charity, the Mary Roxburghe Trust, committed to fulfilling his vision, to which he gifted the entire estate and proceeds of Sotheby’s sales.

ireworks, facepaint and fizz are what you can expect at The Children’s Trust’s Fireworks Night (Friday 27 October) at the historical Tadworth Court. The event, which is open to the public for the first time this year, is being hosted by the charity to raise money for children with brain injury across the UK. The family-friendly evening which promises a spectacular display at one of Surrey’s iconic landmarks begins at 6pm with the main display at 8pm. Food and drink will be available and includes German delicacies, posh potatoes and pancakes. Prosecco and beer will be on offer for adults, while children can join in the festivities with glow-in-thedark face paint and glow sticks. Hannah Vince, fundraiser at The Children’s Trust, said: “We want to make sure our first ever Fireworks Night goes off with a bang! The historical grounds of Tadworth Court make the perfect backdrop for the event and we’re looking forward to welcoming the local community to a very special evening.”
ETHAN’S STORY Ethan was just 7 when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. His mum Tina said: “From the moment Ethan was diagnosed our lives were turned upside down. Ethan stayed in hospital and underwent a range of treatment near his gag reflex, which made him very poorly.” “Ethan moved to The Children’s Trust for specialist brain injury rehabilitation 18 months after his surgery. The location of the tumour meant Ethan had become reluctant to use his voice and found eating and drinking difficult – he went down to three stone at one point. He also lost his confidence. Therapists at The Children’s Trust tried to ensure therapy was fun and whereas I would have done things for Ethan because I love him, and want to help him, therapists knew what he was capable of and made him do it himself. Gradually he grew stronger.” “Ethan is back at school now. He still has a way to go, but without doubt, it’s the all-round support that Ethan received at The Children’s Trust that has made all the difference to his future.”

Engines Roar
for Autumn Motorsport Day at Brooklands Museum Sunday 8th October 2017
S
pectacular engine runs from a 3,000hp dragster will be one of the highlights at the sixth annual Autumn Motorsport Day at Brooklands Museum on Sunday 8th October, organised in conjunction with Ginger Beer Promotions. This is the Museum’s end-of-season celebration of all things motorsport, highlighting everything from grass-roots competition to the pinnacle of the sport - Grand Prix racing. As well as displays and Club stands, there will be plenty of action: a demonstration auto test with rides for visitors, and invited cars will take part in demonstration laps on the circuit at neighbouring Mercedes-Benz World. To top off the action, a motoring event at Brooklands wouldn’t be complete without Test Hill ascents, where the packed crowd will be treated to brave drivers blasting their way to the famous summit.
“In between the special displays and activities, visitors can sample all of Brooklands Museum’s regular attractions” ‘True Blood’ is a period-style, full-bodied, frontengined dragster that pays homage to those brave pioneers of drag racing from the early sixties to the mid-seventies, the ‘Golden Age’ of this sport. The car has now been retired from active championship racing and is a living display to celebrate the ‘slingshot’, the most beautiful form of dragster ever 2 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
created. It is fitted with one of the most famous engines in U.K. drag racing history, the Donovan #144 (a 3,000hp, supercharged 6.8-litre “Hemi” vee8 which runs on Nitromethane) and now appears as a ‘cackle car’, reliving the sight, sound and smell of these fire-breathing monsters. Other star cars will include the brass-bodied “Golden Ford”, a race-winner at Brooklands in 1912 & 1913 which was rescued from a barn and restored, a cluster of 1950s stock cars, Colin Turkington’s British Touring Championship BMW 125i, a Lola single-seater Sprint car and two Dastle F3 cars previously owned by James Hunt and Hesketh F1 Team Manager “Bubbles” Horsley. The Museum’s lap record-holding Napier-Railton built in 1933 for English racing legend John Cobb will be joined in action by a rare Brooklands 1938 Alta single-seater, and more modern classic competition cars will include a Lister-Jaguar, MG Metro 6R4 and a pair of Lancia Stratos rally cars. The recently restored Finishing Straight will be the home of more rally cars and club racers. The autotest demonstration, courtesy of the Farnborough District Motor Club, will give visitors the chance to sample this exciting form of motorsport from the passenger’s seat, as skilled exponents of the art of high-accuracy manoeuvres subject them to handbrake turns around bollards and into impossibly tight spaces. In between the special displays and activities, visitors can sample all of Brooklands Museum’s regular attractions which underline its position as the Birthplace of British Motorsport and Aviation. The story of the first British Grand Prix (which was held at the Weybridge Track in 1926) is told through the Grand Prix Exhibition, which includes an F1 Simulator where visitors can try their hand at some laps of the Brooklands circuit. Half hour virtual supersonic ‘flight’ experiences will be available on Concorde and the 4D Theatre will be operating three motion simulator rides: a seat with the Red Arrows aerobatic team in one of their dynamic displays, a ride behind the driver of the NapierRailton as it speeds round the historic banked Race Track or a lap of Le Mans with British racing legend Mike Hawthorn in 1956 in his Jaguar D-Type.
THE DETAILS One entry ticket gives access to all the action and exhibition and viewing areas on the Museum site and at Mercedes-Benz World. With extra catering facilities to keep crowds warm and fed, the Sunbeam Café and soft indoor play area for youngsters, this is a fantastic day out for families, petrol heads and enthusiasts. Ideally located for easy access from junctions 10 or 11 of the M25 and within walking distance from Weybridge train station, there is no better way to welcome the autumn. This rare unmissable chance to see world-class and exotic competition cars up close is one of the last motoring extravaganzas on the Brooklands calendar for 2017. Admission prices for this premium event are as follows: Adults £13.00, Senior Citizens/Students £12.00, Children (5-16) £7, Children under 5 FREE. Mr David North, moved to Ascot Grange early July and answered the following questions 1/Moving to a care home can actually give many people a new lease of life – how has your life changed since moving? Tremendously, it has taken away the hassles of living by myself at home. I no longer need to worry about cooking, cleaning, shopping or bills. As well as all of this my days are now filled with a variety of activities with new friends. 2/Can you tell us a little more about your accommodation? I chose a delightful spacious studio apartment with patio doors on to the garden. I have a kitchenette with tea and coffee making facilities and a small fridge to keep my milk and snacks! There is a non slip wet room with a heated towel rail. Most importantly I was able to bring my own furniture which means it feels more like home. 3/What does a normal day consist of ? Every day is different, from morning exercise classes, trips out in the mini bus (last week I went to Windsor and stopped at a country pub for a pint) and gardening club. There is also a cinema with nightly screenings which is fabulous! They even took me to Ascot Races! 4/What attracted you to Signature at Ascot Grange? The spacious accommodation and beautiful grounds. I love sitting on my patio with a morning coffee or taking a gentle stroll around the garden, 5/How would you describe your relationship with the staff ? Excellent, nothing is too big for anyone – from restaurant to activities, maintenance to housekeeping and of course the fabulous nurses and carers. 6/If you could sum up Signature at Ascot Grange in a sentence, what would it be? A five star hotel!

Guide To Etiquette For Children
F
or once the despairing pundits, pollsters and commentators are in agreement: children’s manners are getting worse. Table manners are a thing of the past, respect for elders is out of the window, and so on. Yet many parents riposte that it is no longer a question of manners, it’s a question of natural behaviour. Their little darling may like to be louder than the town crier, may want to crawl round other people’s feet in a restaurant, may need to have their parent’s instant attention for their own important demands - but they’re just children, and who are we to say that these natural impulses should be cramped within our own narrow view of manners? Why not try and find a compromise between old-school stiffness and laissez-faire carelessness? Follow these basic precepts: • Teach your child empathy from an early age. Keep reiterating remarks like “how would you feel if someone said that to you?”, and you’ll get your child into the habit of thinking about the impact their behaviour has on others. • Emphasise the importance of sharing. This doesn’t come naturally, so you have to actually tell children to offer sweets around, give other kids a go on the swing etc. Again, repetition is valuable. • Remind them of their ps and qs. This effectively means endlessly reiterations of “say please”, “say thank you”…
3 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
• Teach your children not to interrupt when you’re speaking. Again, repeated reminders work best. • Teach your child to listen carefully. This might entail them getting rewards for sitting still and listening attentively. Listening well is an incredibly important social skill, which will prove invaluable when it comes to making conversations.
Table Manners Table manners are by no means natural. Eventually you will have to teach children to wield and knife and fork correctly, not slurp from a glass, and may even introduce them to the arcane mysteries of correct cutlery usage, tipping soup bowls way from you etc. Don’t get bogged down in these minutiae. Concentrate instead on the absolute essentials. And always bear in mind that if you get too uptight about manners, you will turn family mealtimes into an absolute purgatory that is dreaded by children and adults alike. Repeated lectures about nagging remarks about shortcomings do not make for a convivial atmosphere.
“Always bear in mind that if you get too uptight about manners, you will turn family mealtimes into an absolute purgatory”
Absolutely Essential Table Manners • Wait until everyone has started before you do; if you are specifically invited to start immediately, it is acceptable to do so. • Always eat with your mouth closed. • Always use cutlery (fingers are for bread, fruit and barbecues) • Never reach across the table and help yourself to food; always ask for food to be passed to you (a please won’t go amiss). • Eat as much as you can, then put your knife and fork together on the plate to indicate you have finished. • Ask permission to leave the table, or wait until there is a general move to do so Debrett’s Cygnets, classes teaching dining etiquette for children from the age of 7. op seller from this consignment and in fact in the whole sale was a beautiful suite of Anglo-Indian carved hardwood chairs. With every spare staff member assigned to a telephone bidder, the chairs sold after a fierce international war for an outstanding £26,000. The Tooth collection also saw a number of Polynesian Island paddles and war clubs consigned to the saleroom. Although all four of the intricately carved pieces gained a good amount of interest, it was the Tongan war club that brought out the bidders’ inner warrior, finally selling for a strong £8000. Another best seller was the beautiful Indo-Portuguese Gujurat mother-of-pearl and silver mounted bowl together with a further brass mounted shallow dish. These museum worthy pieces were coveted worldwide, translating into a multitude of online and telephone bidders and finally selling for £22,000. The mother-of-pearl was discovered at a local property, whilst one of our valuers was visiting a client to look at something completely different. It was just pure chance that they came across this gem, the sellers were delighted as now they can have their dream conservatory. If these top results have got you thinking what you might have in your attic, we would love to hear from you! Feel free to give us a call or email to organise a free house call with no obligation to sell, or drop in and see us. We hold open valuation days every Tuesday and Thursday from ten until five. Because we advertise online, on a number of platforms that allow people to bid from all around the world, every item we take in is ensured the best chance to sell. We also send our catalogue out widely across the UK, to a large number of private and commercial clients. These are all reasons that we have so many online and telephone bids as well as bidders in the room on sale day, and items are seen to continually gain top prices.

new age of artistic defiance through their resistance of typical artistic processes and their personal interpretations of cultural mores. As an act, iconoclasm historically holds both religious and progressive connotations. However, 21st century culture has eroded the radicalism of this concept, and artists are now questioning the intrinsic nature of iconoclasm itself by scrutinizing what defines a work of art. While this group cannot be described as iconoclasts in the traditional sense of the word, they are all driven by an iconoclastic urge, which manifests itself in the intriguingly diverse and often destructive ways they produce art. A startling number of materials and techniques cohabit in one exhibition, where abstraction, figuration, creation and deconstruction combine. At a time when the very notion of iconoclasm has seemingly become mainstream, Iconoclasts brings together the work of thirteen distinct contemporary figures, seeking to examine what it means to be an iconoclast today. The Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run Celebrating the history of French Motoring
T
he Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox, takes place on Sunday 5 November, providing a magnificent spectacle and offering members of the public a rare opportunity to watch more than 400 pre-1905 veteran vehicles embark upon a 60-mile journey from Hyde Park to Madeira Drive on Brighton’s seafront. In true tradition, the 2017 Run takes place on the first Sunday of November at the break of dawn, just before 7am, and commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14 November 1896, which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. It was this Act that raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 mph to 14 mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag. The Locomotive Act was still widely known as the ‘Red Flag Act’ and, to mark this milestone, a red flag was symbolically ripped in half at the start of the Emancipation Run, just as it is today. In 2017, more than 120 years after the very first Run was held, the event aims to follow in the footsteps of last year’s success, which saw one of the best finish-rates to date. Year after year, the Run sees a great number of French automobiles join the comradery. In 2016, a remarkable 49 per cent of all entries were French-manufactured vehicles – and, in recognition of all the French automobiles and participants, this year the Run is celebrating French Motoring and its contributions to the industry. This year also introduces a new route. On leaving Hyde Park, the veteran cars will pass many

well-known landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Horseguards and Big Ben before crossing Westminster Bridge. Participants will then leave London via Kennington, Clapham and Morden, passing through Balham. After Morden, the revised route by-passes Sutton on the A217 to Banstead, Tadworth and Reigate before re-joining the traditional route at Redhill. From here it takes the A23 to Horley and the midway halt at Crawley. A special viewing area in Crawley High Street has been established for the thousands of spectators who turn out to support the Veteran Car Run. From Crawley, the route heads to Brighton via Pease Pottage, Staplefield, Cuckfield, Ansty, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Clayton where it joins the A23 for the run into the finish at Madeira Drive. The new route will ensure there are plenty of fabulous viewing spots for the many thousands of spectators who line the streets to wave the veterans on their way. The Run is just one element of the Royal Automobile Club’s London Motor Week, which includes the free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show, to be held on Saturday 4 November. The Veteran Car Run is supported by Title Partner: Bonhams, Official Partners: Hiscox, Your London Airport Gatwick, Harrods, Abels, Visit Brighton, Chopard, Hagerty, Hattingley Valley, RAC Motoring Services and Total, and Manufacturer Patrons: Honda and Renault. ,000 runners have already secured their spot in the very first half marathon to go through both the City of London and Westminster. The London Landmarks Half Marathon is a brand new, closed road charity run taking place for the first time on 25 March 2018. Public entry to the London landmarks Half Marathon has now sold out, but the aim is to raise £4 million between Tommy’s and 100 participating charities who will take the other 5,000 spots. Many charities still have space available including Tommy’s, Alzheimer’s Research UK, Cancer Research UK, Mind, Macmillan Cancer Support, Prostate Cancer UK and Make-A-Wish. In total 10,000 runners will start on Pall Mall, finish by Downing Street and have fabulous views of London’s most iconic landmarks including Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, Nelson’s Column, the Gherkin, the Shard, the Tower of London and the London Eye. The event is not your average half marathon, as it will celebrate London’s ‘quirky and hidden’ history, giving participants the chance to explore the capital while running a route like no other. For example, runners will experience a ‘bowler hat send-off ’ in true London style as the race starts by the world’s oldest hat shop Lock & Co, where the bowler hat originated from in 1849. Themed cheer stations will also give runners and spectators a glimpse into London’s incredible history. From Victorian postmen to suffragettes to Roman Gladiators, runners will smile at every mile hearing the cheers from Londoners gone by. And at the finish line runners will receive their medal in style from a famous character from the city’s history such as Dick Whittington and his cat or Henry VIII. The route will be lined with London’s amazing singers, dancers, bands and musicians – entertaining you every step of the way. The event is the brainchild of baby charity Tommy’s, who have spent two and a half years developing the event to benefit the entire charity sector. With their offices based in the heart of the City, Tommy’s noticed a gap in the market, realising a central London half marathon taking in the City and all of the Capital’s landmarks did not exist. Tommy’s therefore took the decision to pursue developing and launching a new central London half marathon to benefit both themselves, and many other charities too. Tommy’s is delighted to be launching this exciting new event with the support of Westminster City Council and the City of London Corporation. Just Giving are the official fundraising partner and the event will be delivered on the day by Human Race. Lia Bowman, Director at the London Landmarks Half Marathon commented, “After 2.5 years of planning, we are so excited to bring this new event to our capital and are over the moon that public entry has sold out so quickly. We are looking forward to raising millions of pounds for charities and giving runners and spectators a day they will remember and talk about for a long time!

How Does It Work? Yes, you really can freeze away fat! Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you! BEAUTY & FASHION time to sparkle There are tons of glitter lipsticks on the market, but the difference here is that it’s a liquid formula that ends up both matte and glitter. The formula is creamy and glides on easily like a gloss, then dries to a matte finish with almost no glitter visible. You’re then instructed to press your lips to unleash the sparkle. And it really works. Why? Because when the liquid dries the glitter particles are trapped beneath the surface, but by pressing your lips together they’re released, resulting in one seriously dazzling pout. NEW LIPSTICKS FOR AUTUMN Pucker up with our pick of the best new lippies. WORDS: Katie Wright
N
ew season fashion drops aren’t the only reason to get excited this time of year – the autumn/winter make-up collections will be landing in stores, too, bringing with them a boatload of lipsticks we think you’re going to love. Whether you’re a glossy girl or an all-matte-everything type, there’s a shade and shine level for you. From barely-there buffs to uber-brights, we’ve rounded up the lippies vying for a place in your make-up bag -– and your heart – this autumn. Smashbox Be Legendary Triple Tone Lipstick Red Ombre Take the shortcut to an ombre lip with Smashbox’s clever triple-stacked stick. The technique takes a bit of getting used to (you have to turn it upside down to do the lower lip) and you’ll need a liner that matches the outermost shade to get a really clean outline, but the effect is gorgeous, and it’s still a whole lot easier than painting on three separate colours. £17.50, smashbox.co.uk Bourjois Rouge Velvet The Lipstick Rubik’s Cute Matte liquid lipsticks can sometimes feel thick and caked on, but this new solid formula from Bourjois is lightweight without compromising on colour payoff. Love a blue-toned red? Rubik’s Cute (see what they’ve done there?) is the hue to choose. £8.99, Boots MAC Viva Glam Taraji P Henson 2 Lipstick The next iteration of the link-up between MAC and the American actress and writer brings us a gorgeous golden-mahogany lipstick with a subtle metallic sheen. £16.50, maccosmetics.co.uk Nars Audacious Lipstick Louise New to the Audacious Lipstick line-up for autumn are six punchy and pigmented shades, including Louise, a deep opaque blackberry. £25, narscosmetics.co.uk Ainsel Sarong Lipstick New brand Ainsel wants you to forgo trends and find your perfect make-up staples instead, which is why its eight inaugural lipsticks are all classic shades, like Sarong, an uber-bright red with orange undertones. £19.50, ainsel.com RMK Irresistible Glow Lipstick Sheer Beige Part of a collaboration with Japanese designer Taro Horiuchi to mark the brand’s 20th anniversary, this light, pearly-coral gloss is a real complexion-lifter. £22, Selfridges

Too Faced Melted Latex Liquified Lipstick Safe Word If it’s shine you’re after, it doesn’t get much glossier than this. Too Faced’s wet-look latex lippie comes in 16 succulent shades. We love the Barbie pink Safe Word. £19, Debenhams Pur Cosmetics Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick Oh Bae Pur’s latest matte lipstick range comes in a palette that’s on the more muted side, but the formula is still highly pigmented and long-lasting. Pinkishbrown Oh Bae is our new daytime favourite. £16, FeelUnique.com Mary Kay Gel Semi-Shine Lipstick Naturally Buff Imparting a subtle sheen rather than all-out dazzle, Mary Kay’s Semi-Shine lipsticks come in 12 pinky shades, ideal if you want that ‘your lips but better’ vibe. £14, marykay.co.uk Glamglow Plumprageous Metallic Lip Plumper Treatment Suggestive With plumping properties and a metallic finish, Glamglow’s new liquid lippie promises a Kylie Jenner-level pout - and it really delivers. Get ready to rock the frock! A
utumn has well and truly arrived, and like it or not, winter is on its way. The days are colder, the nights are longer – and while you might not want to think about it just yet, Christmas is most definitely coming! It’s never too early to start your prep for the party season. Jill Zander – A Courthouse Medispa has a selection of body contouring treatments that can help you ‘rock the frock’ and look your very best, however and wherever you’re celebrating. Cool Tech Fat Freezing is one of our most popular procedures. It offers a fast, effective, non-invasive way to permanently get rid of stubborn pockets of fat from problem areas such as thighs, tummy, bottom, back and arms. As the name suggests, it works by freezing fat cells, which causes them to die off and be eliminated through the body’s own lymphatic system. It’s the perfect, pain-free alternative to liposuction – and it achieves visible results after just one session! Another popular body contouring treatment at Courthouse Clinics is Endermologie – and now is the ideal time to begin a course if you’re keen to look slim and slinky this festive season. Endermologie is scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite, boost circulation and improve skin tone. It’s perfect if you’re looking to banish those lumps and bumps beneath your little black dress. If you’re interested in skin tightening, then why not try our Radiofrequency body treatment? Our Alma Accent machine painlessly heats the body’s surface to tighten loose skin – a common side effect of weight loss. So if you’ve managed to lose a few pounds ahead of the traditional Christmas excess, Alma Accent will help to restore your skin tone and resolve any sagging. Our Soprano skin tightening is another great minimally invasive treatment option if you’re after firmer, younger looking skin. It uses high-intensity infrared light to painlessly heat up the skin’s deeper layers, stimulating collagen production and improving surface skin tone and tautness. Best of all, it can be used on almost any part of the body. In short, it’s never been easier to get in shape for Christmas. “ What sets Sevenoaks Hearing apart is the personal service.” Calum Hiscock, Sevenoaks, Kent
F
or many years, Harley Street in London represented the pinnacle of medical care. But for all our ears’ sake, it’s good to know that today there is a company offering premium-level hearing treatment a little closer to home. Founded by experienced audiologist Matt Cannon, Sevenoaks Hearing have been serving the Kent community for over 14 years. This month also sees their second specialist clinic open in Banstead, much to the delight of the picturesque Surrey village’s local residents. Here are some of the bespoke services you can find on offer at both Sevenoaks Hearing clinics:
Hearing tests An audiology assessment is often the first step to enhancing your hearing. It’s also the most important. That’s why Sevenoaks Hearing take their time, using the latest technology to build a detailed profile of your hearing. This allows their audiologists to identify the root cause of your problems with pinpoint accuracy.
Consultation After your hearing tests, you’ll have all the time you need to work out the best course of action. Their audiologists take into consideration your lifestyle and budget as well as your hearing profile. 6 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
“I can hear what everyone round the table is saying, not just those on either side of me.” – Rusty Dawson, Sevenoaks, Kent
As an independent specialist, they’re also able to offer impartial recommendations. And they never pressure a client into a decision.
Hearing aid optimisation If you’ve bought a hearing aid from someone else but aren’t happy with its performance, chances are it hasn’t been calibrated properly for your hearing profile. Sevenoaks Hearing can tune the settings to work perfectly for you, no matter which manufacturer made your hearing aid.
Wax removal
“It’s lovely to hear the birds again!” – F Saalfeld, Shoreham, Kent
It may not be pretty, but earwax is important for your ears to protect themselves. However, if wax becomes compacted, it can also cause hearing problems. If you suffer from wax build up, Sevenoaks Hearing are able to clear your ear canals safely and hygienically, either by irrigation or microsuction.
Home visits To find out more about Sevenoaks Hearing, drop into their clinics in Sevenoaks, Kent and Banstead Village, Surrey or visit their website at www.sevenoakshearing.co.uk

Thanks to modern technology, nearly all their hearing tests and consultation services can be conducted in the comfort of your home. They also offer a postal delivery service for products such as batteries and accessories, saving you the trip.

THE HISTORY OF Following the recent announcement that Michael Kors has bought the luxury accessories brand for £896m - we take a look back at the history of Jimmy Choo, rising from humble origins in a cobbler workshop to becoming one of Britain’s best-known fashion brands.
2017 Bridal Collection’ Below: Mens Autumn Winter 2017 Collection; Right: Jimmy Choo
Y
ou can trace its roots back to a bespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed 6 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of ready-to-wear footwear -
“It’s a beautiful, distinctive art, and shoes are like the foundations. If the foundations aren’t right, the building won’t stand upright, and if a woman’s balance isn’t right, nothing else is.” - Jimmy Choo

JIMMY CHOO with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories. But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, crystal-embellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-toearth leather goods and ready-to-wear. Jimmy himself now concentrates on a very personal business, where he designs directly for clients in high-end couture. Jimmy Choo was awarded an OBE in 2002, and girls and women around the world continue to covet owning a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes! www.jimmychoo.com

A contemporary London style Kitchen studio in Surrey
A
daptations, established in 1999 by Ian Cross, opened their Cobham showroom in the summer of 2012 with a view to creating a contemporary London style Kitchen studio here in Surrey. Their designers create beautiful but practical kitchen layouts, mixing luxury German brands alongside their very own bespoke furniture which is available in a choice of hand painted and hardwood finishes. For people looking for something different they also work with American reclaimed Oak from which they produce beautiful freestanding contemporary styled islands which they mix with modern matt lacquered ranges and in doing so create unique and eclectic designs. Using ultra-thin worktops made from sintered stone, these islands are made to order and can include hobs or even herb troughs. Their showroom showcases an extensive range of products including the unique ‘’Works’’ range by the renowned German brand Eggersmann. Incorporating stunning full height mirrored panels which rotate through 180 degrees to expose an array of beautifully made storage solutions, these are positioned behind islands available in a variety of extreme matt and stone finishes to create a truly unique solution to serious cooks or those looking for something different. Their kitchens are made to order in wide range of finishes including solid surfaces and natural stone. They not only design beautiful kitchens in a huge choice of styles, finishes and textures but are one of the few companies that can supply complete islands in a selection of solid marble and granite stone surfaces. All visible facets of the kitchen being made in the same material including fascia’s drawer fronts and panels. Adaptations offer a full installation service and will take care of all aspects of your project aspects of the work including tiling and flooring, electrical works and plumbing as well as redecoration. Creating beautiful attic bathrooms “Make the most of your space by working with the original features: exposed beams, a sloping ceiling and extra skylights can all create a beautiful attic bathroom to relax in”
Looking for an inventive way to make effective use of a loft conversion? An attic bathroom can transform your new room into a showstopping area.
T
ucked away in the roof, an attic bathroom can be a quiet retreat from everyday life and, with the right finishing touches, will become a warm and welcoming place to escape to after a busy day. Make the most of your space by working with the original features: exposed beams, a sloping ceiling and extra skylights can all create a beautiful attic bathroom to relax in. Or, you can create something special from scratch, adding in your own accessories and features. Working with the natural architecture of your attic, you can choose a shower and clever storage solutions for smaller areas. Well-placed mirrors will also create the illusion of a much larger bathroom, lending a light and airy feeling, even to cramped attic spaces. Add extra features to larger rooms, such as a freestanding bath or a heated towel rack to add a luxurious touch to your new attic bathroom.
HOW TO DESIGN A LOFT CONVERSION BATHROOM Before starting to build a loft conversion you will need to check if you need planning permission from your local planning department. However, regardless of whether or not you need planning permission a loft conversion will require Building Regulations approval. When building a loft conversion bathroom, or indeed any additional bathroom in the house, consult a specialist in bathroom loft conversations – they can give you all the expert advice - initially whether or not your boiler is capable of supplying hot water to the extra bathroom. One solution to this could be an electric shower that produces its own hot water on demand. Also, consider if you wish to have a window in your loft bathroom, and if so where. Have a clear idea of what you want for your bathroom, but be aware that you may have limitations or need to make some changes based on the layout of the room. For example, where the staircase will need to be and if there are any restrictions with plumbing. Again the experts can advise you and suggest ideas on how to achieve your loft bathroom retreat. Whether a full or part en-suite, it will provide the privacy to unwind - and of course add value to your property.

Bewitching Blackcurrant Rethinking the space and sophisticated design created this contemporary Surrey kitchen
D
aunted by the prospect of moving house, this Surrey couple contacted Kate Diss at Sanctuary Kitchens & Bathrooms to help rethink their existing living space. Happy with their location, with lovely neighbours and their son in a nearby school they wanted Sanctuary to relook at the space and see how this could work better for their changing lifestyle. One of their main concerns was the dining room, this simply wasn’t used due to having their dining table in the garden room. “The brief was to open up the downstairs area and incorporate the unused dining room as well as upgrading the family bathroom and downstairs cloakroom. They wanted clean lines and a sharp contemporary design. Sanctuary Kitchens & Bathrooms was their one stop shop for everything they needed,” Kate explains. Rethinking the living space was vital, even though it was called the dining room this didn’t mean that it could be its only function. Removing the dividing wall avoided the need to move but also resulted in additional space to design a wonderful open-plan kitchen and living area. The kitchen workspace was positioned in the darkest part of the room as this is where the family would spend the least time. A stunning feature island was introduced as the central part of the kitchen overlooking the garden. Moving the living areas nearer to the windows allowed enjoyable views

of the garden linking the inside and outside spaces. Innovative ideas and a striking mix of materials have turned this family home into a delightful contemporary space. “High gloss white units with the integral capped handles in a combination of storage solutions allowed everything to be stored away and easily accessible,” explains Kate. Incorporating deep drawers for crockery and pans kept the clean lines of the design, which meant the countertop could be kept clutter free retaining the minimalist contemporary style. As keen cooks, the design included Fisher and Paykel’s American fridge-freezer and striking range cooker. Sensio pod pullout power sockets with usb ports were added to ensure safety as leads don’t get in the way. Integrated Miele appliances included a washer dryer, dishwasher and microwave which kept everything hidden away and the stylish but quiet extractor was a perfect choice for this open family room. Keeping the overall colour palette light makes the room feel more spacious and varying materials such as the Nero Zimbabwe granite worktop adds depth and contrast. A range of lighting solutions brightened up the kitchen with factory fitted LED under lighting showcasing the stunning blackcurrant splashback bringing a pop of bewitching colour to the room. The new kitchen and living space has transformed the family’s home. www.sanctuarydesign.co.uk

esign, premium quality and exclusivity – Villeroy & Boch combines these aspects in two extraordinary luxury products. Chinese star-designer Steve Leung has created an exclusive design for Octagon and Squaro Prestige with Swarovski crystals. The result is breathtaking. Leung chose Swarovski Xirius Rose crystals in the three sizes 5 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm, which glitter brilliantly thanks to their special cut. Lovingly crafted, nearly 5,000 of these crystals were applied to the leather for the bath and more than 1,000 for the wash basin. They create a vivid effect of depth that appears even more magical with the sparkling precious crystals. tips for improving your bathroom
Redoing your bathroom can be a great opportunity to improve the layout, but there are lots of things to consider...
8 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
1. If you’re happy with the layout of your bathroom, replacing the suite should be straightforward and relatively inexpensive, but if you want to change the layout, expect it to be more complicated and costly. Unless you’re a very experienced and competent DIYer, get a good plumber to do the work. They should be able to offer advice about changing the layout and what is and isn’t possible or advisable, as should a good bathroom/interior designer. A professional may think of things you haven’t, such as what you can and can’t do with the wastes, which could affect the layout and the products you choose. 2. If you’re not using a designer and rejigging the layout is proving tricky, try drawing the bathroom on graph paper. Draw the room’s features, such as the window, door, airing cupboard, etc, on one piece of graph paper and the fittings you want on another, using the same scale. Then draw different layouts on different pieces of graph paper and lay them over the first plan to see how they work, or make life simple and do all this on a computer or tablet! 3. Once you have a layout you’re happy with, it’s a good idea to make life-size templates of the fittings in cardboard to try in the room. Having an above-bath shower will restrict where you put the bath, for example, and you may come across other problems when placing your templates. Better still, try the actual loo, basin, bath, etc, when the room’s empty to see how they work together and in the space you have. If returning them isn’t a problem, you could try different loos, basins and baths if you’re unsure about which will work best. 4. Don’t forget to work out how much space is needed to comfortably use the loo and basin and to dry off after having a shower or bath. Pack in too much and you’ll find that your bathroom isn’t particularly easy, practical or pleasurable to use. It’s important to choose a suite that’s in proportion to
the size of the room. Straight baths, for example, come in different widths and lengths, but if you’ve got a really small or awkward space, a tapered bath may be ideal. If there’s more space, a shower bath, which is roomier at the shower end, can be a good choice. 5. Freestanding baths and separate shower cubicles need room to breathe, so squeezing them into a small space isn’t advisable. If your heart’s set on a freestanding bath, but you don’t have room, a freestanding-style shower bath is a good compromise. This looks like a freestanding bath, but the tap end and one side is flat so it sits flush against two walls, meaning you can have a shower above without water leaking down the sides onto the floor.

3 steps to your dream kitchen with Tara Neil Making your dream kitchen happen is what Tara Neil Kitchens is all about, and the 3-step process they use will ensure that your vision becomes a reality. 9 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
THE CONSULTATION The first step to creating a truly unique interior is dialogue. You can meet one of the Tara Neil designers at their inspiring 4,000 sq. ft. showroom in Woodley, Reading, or in your home, to discuss your project further. During this initial consultation, your designer will ask you about your project, lifestyle, timescale and budget, and will compile an outline design brief. At this stage, they will work from your architects’ plans or undertake their own on-site survey to obtain the relevant architectural information and room dimensions. This is a service that, unlike with some other companies, is always free at Tara Neil Kitchens.
THE DESIGN Once your designer has established your brief, the next step is to create a draft proposal of floor plans and elevations, along with an initial estimate for the project. This is normally produced within 2-3 days of the consultation. You will then be invited for a second appointment in the showroom to discuss the design and costs in more detail. This also gives you the opportunity to inspect
the finer details of the design proposals from the impressive selection of samples and full kitchen displays. Tara Neil’s in-house interior designer will also be on hand to advise and inspire. Once the final design and costs are agreed, you will be asked to pay a commissioning deposit. At this point your designer will produce the relevant service drawings, as well as securing a delivery slot for your furniture.
THE INSTALLATION The team at Tara Neil know that the upheaval involved in undertaking any kind of refurbishment to your home can be a nuisance, but it never needs to be a source of stress. Communication and organisation are vital to successful project management and your designer will manage your project from initial design to final installation. Tara Neil employs a team of dedicated professionals who have overseen many installations with the minimum of disruption (as their testimonials attest), including a full-time project manager with 22-years’ experience in large housing developments. The project manager and your designer will liaise with your architect or building contractor regularly to ensure everything is running according to plan. Once the project is complete, both the designer and project manager will meet with you on site to review the finished project. If you already have a builder or kitchen fitter that you would like to use then they can offer supply only. www.taraneil.com; 01189 698500

Exquisitely designed kitchens C harlie Kingham has built a reputation for exceptionally well designed bespoke cabinetry. From the classic handmade English style furniture right through to the shaker kitchen, their wonderfully unique and exclusive signature luxury kitchens combine traditional cabinetmaking craftsmanship with the latest technology. Although initially London based, they have experience with projects completed worldwide and are proud to announce their first venture outside of London, with the opening of their second showroom nestled right in the heart of Guildford’s town centre. With such an impressive space, they have skilfully and effortlessly incorporated a wonderful selection from their main collections on offer within the new Guildford studio. The ‘Kingham collection’ is their classic shaker style kitchen, which is produced using their oldest and most traditional joinery techniques. The ‘Marylebone’ style is their genuine bespoke option, showcasing the cabinetmakers artistry in all its finest glory. We cannot forget to mention their newest venture, the ‘Shoreditch collection’ an edgier reinterpretation of the classic shaker style of cabinetry, referencing the use of industrial and reclamation influences from the recent surge in warehouse and loft apartment renovations. The kitchen has evolved to be become the most used room in the home; we love to spend our relaxation time in these wonderful rooms. Charlie Kingham, have embraced this amazingly unencumbered lifestyle with their very own exclusive and creative evolution of the traditional kitchens and their format. Their cabinetry designs

encourage this way of living and maximise all that is needed to create the perfect ambience for your new “Heart of the Home”. Although often quoted and referred to as the ‘Shaker style’, quintessentially our hand painted English kitchen cabinetry has over the years developed it’s own unique and simply beautiful signature look that transcends trends, fads and time. The subtle and utilitarian detailing that was traditionally hidden away ‘downstairs’ in the staff work kitchens of our historic houses is really not something everybody quite gets but those that do will always love and cherish the beautifully understated charm to be found in a bespoke kitchen. Why stop there, Charlie Kingham has opened the doors to exquisitely designed Utility and Boot rooms to match and compliment shaker style cabinetry throughout. As well as utilising their experience with traditional cabinetry, they offer personalised and bespoke options for the bedroom and bathroom. Always striving to keep the often quoted shaker ethos, “Don’t make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don’t hesitate to make it beautiful”, they welcome the challenge of the more unique projects that regularly come their way. It is always best to call ahead or make an appointment to arrange a full consultation with a member of the design team. Spruce up your kitchen to sell your home
I
f your kitchen units have seen better days and you don’t want to go to the expense and hassle of replacing them, give them an instant makeover by changing the doors and drawer fronts. This will transform the kitchen and needn’t be too expensive - B&Q (www.diy.com), for example, has a big range of affordable unit doors and drawer fronts, many available in store. If the units aren’t standard sizes or you want a more affordable option, simply paint the doors and drawer fronts to give them a new look, or glue thin MDF to the front to change the style and then paint them.
CLEAR THE CLUTTER Cluttered kitchens aren’t a selling point. If lack of worktop space is a problem, think about how you can make what you have go further. Use microwave brackets to get your microwave off the worktop, or fit nice wall shelves to declutter the worktop. In a small kitchen, a hinged wallhung table will give you more work space and somewhere to eat. If your kitchen has highish ceilings and you’re happy to change the wall units, tall ones provide extra storage. Failing that, stack attractive baskets or boxes on top of the existing wall units to make the most of the space, but don’t store anything heavy up there. 9 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
“Giving tired walls and woodwork a fresh coat or two of paint will make a big difference to any room” STEAM CLEAN Grubby tile grout makes kitchens look grotty. White grout is easily marked by cooking splashes, shampoo, shower gel and the like, but there is a quick and easily solution - steam-clean it. Use a steam cleaner like the excellent Karcher SC 3 (£159.99, www.kaercher.com/uk) and your grout should soon look like new. If the power of steam doesn’t work, or work sufficiently, you can apply grout paint to re-whiten the grout. In the worse cases, consider raking out the stained grout and applying more, but this is a big job and you may chip the tiles in the process.
FRESHEN UP If you’re selling your home, giving tired walls and woodwork a fresh coat or two of paint will make a big difference to any room, but especially the kitchen and bathroom because they’re key rooms. Make sure you use a scrubbable paint so it stays looking good – special kitchen emulsions are designed to withstand things like mould and steam and are available in all sorts of colours these days.

Hazlemere Windows Assist On DIY SOS Big Build Project
O
ne day about 5 years ago Midwife Sascha Koutrouza came home to her home in Welwyn Garden City with a throat infection that sadly changed everything in her life forever. Doctors believe the throat infection caused her immune system to overrespond, leaving her with permanent kidney disease. She was reassured that it would be decades before she needed treatment, but unfortunately Sascha’s symptoms grew rapidly. In just six months, Sascha had final stage kidney disease requiring hospital dialysis at least 4 days a week. Family weekends for Sascha were spent feeling sick and exhausted. She kept on going for the sake of her family – never complaining; but they were reaching all at the point of breaking and were naturally concerned for her future. The main hope was home dialysis – but this hope was dashed when she was told there wasn’t the space at home for this to happen. Mr Andrew Koutrouza and the extended family simply could

not afford the extension, which is when DIY SOS got involved: A single-storey extension would create the space needed for the NHS to provide an ‘athome’ (specific to Sascha’s type of kidney treatment) dialysis system for daily home treatment. The build would turn everything around for this family and mark a vital step in Sascha regaining her life.
THE DETAILS To view the same UPVC window products supplied and fitted by Hazlemere during this programme, visit one of their home improvement showrooms. The Hertfordshire Showroom is located at Unit 10 Mundells Industrial Estate, Little Mundells, Welwyn Garden City, Herts, AL7 1EW.
The BBC put out an appeal on Facebook for tradesmen and materials, and given Hazlemere Windows have a showroom in Welwyn Garden City, they decided they would supply and fit all the new and replacement windows and doors needed on the project. So for one whole week last year four of Hazlemere’s most experienced craftsmen gave up a week of their time to install new windows and doors. The Hazlemere team consisted of Senior Installer John Layton, Installation Manager Alan Layton, Operations Director Jason Bradshaw and Fitter Michal Kowalczyk. These guys worked alongside DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles, along with series regulars Mark Miller, Chris Frediani, Julian Perryman and Billy Byrne from 23rd August 2016 to 1st September 2016, The team from Hazlemere Window Company worked their socks off throughout the entire Big Build week, fitting new windows and doors, whether as replacement windows and doors or new windows and doors into new builders openings. Thanks to the generosity of aluminium and PVCu window and door manufacturers, Conservatory Outlet of Wakefield in Yorkshire, and double glazed sealed unit manufacturers Nicholls and Clarke of Fareham in Hampshire, Hazlemere Window Company were able to procure the glass, window and door frames from these suppliers at cost, which meant they were able to donate all the products and their labour free of charge to the Welwyn Garden City family in need, being helped out by DIY SOS to give them a brighter future. Consequently, Hazlemere sincerely thank both the Conservatory Outlet and Nicholls and Clarke for playing no small part in enabling the lives of this needy family to be transformed. As part of the transformation project, Hazlemere Windows were asked to survey, supply and install white A+ energy rated PVCu double glazed windows throughout the house and also in the new extension that was built by the DIY SOS
team and all the other tradesmen, and suppliers who had also given their time and resources to the cause. In addition Hazlemere supplied and fitted a double glazed aluminium bi-folding door to the extension built by the DIY SOS team, enabling Sascha’s family to open up her new living space, as and when the weather allows! The DIY SOS programme, showing how this Hertfordshire home in the Knightsfield area of Wewlyn Garden City was totally transformed was first broadcast live by the BBC 1 at 9pm on Thursday 15th June 2017.
The Buckinghamshire Showroom is located in Wellington Road, Cressex Business Park, High Wycombe, Bucks, HP12 3PR. For directions call 01344 989938 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

Love Your Home, established in 2009, is the brainchild of Leigh Harmer and Abi Boura. Their stunning showroom, a converted 17th century barn, can be found nestled in the Surrey Hills and showcases the breadth of their designs with a large selection of sofas, sofa beds and beds. Having both come from an interiors background, Leigh creates the designs and Abi is stylist and co-creator, they felt that there was a gap in the market for ‘real’ family sofas. They both advocate that your sofa should be comfortable, of good quality and hard wearing without foregoing choice on style and luxury fabrics. They also offer a bespoke service allowing customers to ‘make it their own’ by adjusting dimensions such as arm height, seat depth and sofa width. Customers can also select from different leg styles and colour options, plus a wonderful array of fabrics and 1 0 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
colours. Most clients choose the bespoke service whereby designs can be tweaked, whether that is with a higher back, longer arms or deeper seats, as this can easily be accommodated.
“Our new collections this year are inspired by our customers focussing on relaxed comfort in lovely linens and elegant boutique in luxury velvets all now available to see in our showroom.”
The showroom is full of everything from relaxed 4-seaters in linen like the Joseph to elegant chesterfields like the Earl Grey. Through their clever combination of colours and fabrics in the designs, they have enabled customers to make brave choices with their sofas, armchairs and beds. Indeed, their signature Earl Grey design in exclusive Mohair Velvet Turmeric set against the panelled painted Blue Black wall inspires many of their customers. “Our new collections this year are inspired by our customers focussing on relaxed comfort in lovely linens and elegant boutique in luxury velvets all now available to see in our showroom.” Their latest collection is just as daring
with a striking gold velvet family corner sofa combining modern styling with luxurious clever stain resistant fabric on the Jake Corner Sofa. This colour is already proving to be popular with customers along with colours teal and blush. The Jasper in Peacock Mohair Velvet accented with blossom scatter cushions brings together these two colours in perfect harmony. We anticipate that this modern and contemporary look could be the next trend colour combination in many homes soon. Of course Leigh and Abi recognise that not everyone wants to be bold with colour. So for those who prefer softer palettes, in particular more neutral colours like grey and cream, there are plenty of fabulous subtle variations to play with too. To try out all these sofas plus their armchairs and beds why not pop along to their showroom just off the A3 with free parking or view online at love-your-home.co.uk with their brand new easy to navigate website.

Re-instating former glory
T
alking to Katherine Richards about the projects she has been commissioned to work on was particularly interesting when she began to describe a fascinating job she and her company completed a couple of years ago. The client had inherited the curtains which had hung in the library of his stately family home since 1802. ‘He described how, as a small child, he would visit the library and gaze up at the elaborately designed Victorian fabric, adorned with griffins and richly coloured swirls’, says Katherine. When the family sold the enormous house, and moved to another one on the estate the curtains (which didn’t fit the new windows) were lovingly packed up into a box, accompanied the family to their new home, but were not forgotten. ‘Curtains were made for the new library which were appropriately opulent but the fashions had changed and they did not have the same dramatic impact as the original ones’. ‘The day came when Katherine was invited to visit the house and meet the client who wanted to discuss having the original curtains re-hung in
1 1 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
the library.’ explains Katherine. ‘it was an exciting moment when the old ones were carefully unpacked and lifted out of the box. Unfortunately, they had suffered over the years and it was with regret that we had to agree it would not be possible to restore them’. The decision was made to replicate the original design. The old curtains were sent to a historical and well-respected mill, Gainsborough Fine Weavers, who weave fabrics for royal palaces and state buildings the world over. Together, with their expertise the team at Katherine Richards Design worked alongside Gainsborough, making sure that every detail was noticed. Surprisingly, the reverse showed that the threads were not faded so new yarns were specially dyed to match the original colours and the looms were prepared. ‘We commissioned one of Britain’s most established and recognised trimmings makers using traditional methods handed down from renowned French passementerie makers’ A specialist wood carver was appointed to make the holdbacks into which griffins were carved painted and gilded. Once the fabric was woven and the trimmings completed, the curtains were fastidiously hand sewn at the KRD workrooms. The whole bespoke process took a year to complete and the results were stunning. All the projects KRD work on are unique; at any one time they could be working on a restoration in a country house, such as this one, an overseas property or a new build. The knowledgeable and expert team at Katherine Richards Design is clearly able to deliver to the most discerning clients, whatever their requirements. Classic is always a good idea. W
ho cares about current trends in wood flooring when it seems we have been buying parquet wooden floors for what seems an eternity. Some things will always remain classic and stylish, and both herringbone and chevrons are patterns that are here to stay. But, they can be funky too, like our individually time worn herringbone multi coloured floor. Brave, bold and exuberant. But of course it’s the possibilities that are the heartbeat of a creative mind, and there are endless possibilities when it comes to wooden flooring. Designs are possible with wood that are not even conceivable with any other floor finish. Durable too, which we all seem to overlook. Take a look at Copenhagen airport. Its first wooden floor was laid in the 60’s and was made form solid padauk, a slight reddish African wood that is incredibly hard wearing. It is still there today, looking even more elegant than the day it was installed. There is a multitude of beautiful exotic wood species on the market today and, its always nice to explore the tones of these woods before simply opting for oak, the most popular of all wood species. But even oak has its magical qualities. We’ve made everything from oak including boats houses and musical instruments, so oak is here to stay. But, if you’re looking for something special, something really really special, something you may never have even have heard of or even knew it existed, then you should explore the beauty of a natural and historic oak that is at least 2000 years old. Black beauty still exists. www.turgonflooring.co.uk/reclaimed/ historic-bog-oak

I
n the 1940s the Trust leased Headley Court to the Air Ministry at a modest rent to set-up as a rehabilitation centre for injured RAF personnel from World War Two. Since then the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC), which aims to return all those service personnel injured or seriously ill to full fitness, has been expanded and developed. The sale follows the announcement in July 2014 that the MOD will be relocating in 2018 from Headley Court to the Stanford Hall Estate near Loughborough. Headley Court totals 82 acres (33 hectares) and includes an attractive Grade II Listed 19th Century mansion at its epicentre, with views across the surrounding landscape. Beyond the mansion are purpose built facilities providing a range of accommodation, namely offices, administrative space, extensive sporting facilities, a rehabilitation complex and residential housing. Overall there are 133 bedrooms in the staff accommodation, and 56 semi-detached and 8 detached residential properties. The encompassing grounds comprise both formal and informal landscaped gardens. Also, there is a tennis court, surrounding woodland areas, sports fields and parking for more than 400 vehicles. Air Vice Marshal Anthony J Stables, the chairman of the Headley Court Charity, said: “For almost 70 years the medical rehabilitation facility at Headley Court has cared for wounded, injured and sick members of the Armed Forces and it holds a very special place in many peoples’ hearts. Recognising that the single object of the Charity will be subsumed within the objects of the Black Stork Charity operating at the Stanford Hall estate, Trustees have resolved to sell the Headley Court estate. Following the sale, Trustees will seek to revise their charitable objects acting in the very best interests of the Armed Forces community.”
The MOD’s relocation plans to the Stanford Hall estate are well underway and the property will become vacant late in 2018. Mindful of the environment and the community, since 2015, the Trustees have been in close dialogue with the Mole Valley District Council in consideration of potential uses for the site. The outcome of these discussions concluded that whilst the site currently provides renowned national medical rehabilitation facilities and that replacement facilities are currently under construction at the Stanford Hall estate, the District Council supports the potential for alternative uses/development on the site, which would enable the legacy of the site’s medical rehabilitation facilities to continue in some form; including the retention of the main building as part of a wider development. There is scope for the following range of uses, subject to the necessary consents: Continued C2 (Residential Institution) Use, Residential development. (C3), Retirement/ Assisted Living (C2/C3), Education (D1/C2), and Hotel (C1). The attractive Manor House would be suitable for conversion to a residential use. Emma Cleugh, partner at Knight Frank handling the sale for Headley Court Charity said: “We are privileged to be acting on behalf of the Charity for the sale of this incredibly important property. Our aim is to do the very best for the Headley Court Charity as the DMRC moves forward in its relocation, thus allowing the Charity to continue and expand its good work, but in a different way. “Headley Court has a range of impressive attributes and is in a superb location. We expect to see interest from UK and overseas purchasers including private individuals, institutions, hotel and retirement housing operators, and developers. We will be actively marketing the property over the coming months with the aim to draw interest to a conclusion later this year.”

This Year’s Autumn Design Trends revealed by Alexander James Interior Design
T
he nights are drawing in, warm russet hues are rippling through our green outdoors and a refreshing crispness has returned to the air; autumn is here. Once again, it is time to celebrate this spectacular season in our homes by seeing what the autumn interior design trends 2017 can offer. Having been voted once again as one of the top 100 interior designers in the world this year, Alexander James Interior Design are well placed to provide expert insight into this year’s autumn trends. We spoke to Creative Director of Alexander James Interior Design, Stacey Sibley, to hear her insights into the latest seasonal design trends. “We’ve seen a real inclination for soft, muted tones over the spring and summer. All that is changing for autumn, as bright jewel colours burst onto the interiors scene. Colours are all about the rich warmth of teals, burnt oranges, shaded spruce and autumn maple. These are bold tones for uplifting interiors – we are brightening up the indoors as the outdoors dims in preparation for winter.” – Stacey Sibley, Creative Director, Alexander James Interior Design Stacey tells us how plush, patterned fabrics will complement the bold jewel colours of autumn, while summer’s fascination with nature will continue, but with a shift into more rich, floral patterns. “Florals this autumn are set to be larger than life – picture rich velvet cushions printed with large scale, expressive tulips, apple blossom and roses. We’re also seeing floral prints in wallpapers and fabrics that look like old master still life paintings, allowing us to incorporate these into the home in exciting new ways – it’s a modern twist on classical prints.” – Stacey Sibley, Creative Director, Alexander James Interior Design When it comes to larger items of furniture, colour

comes to the fore once more. Alexander James recommend Julian Chichester for statement furniture pieces, who offer a beautifully sculpted, teal Cabinet this autumn (www.julianchichester.com). For smaller accessories, Stacey tells us that it’s all about blending those jewel colours with interesting textures. Lamps can be purchased in colours and styles to reflect autumnal trends perfectly; Heathfield Lighting offer some stunning pieces using the most favoured Autumn tones. Fabric brands Zoffany and Casamance also offer some fabulous autumnal shades, allowing you to add the perfect autumnal touch to your interiors in a variety of colours and textures. Alexander James suggest that the vibrant personality of autumn 2017 design trends can be expressed perfectly through artwork – by incorporating the rich jewel hues into the paintings chosen to complete a design.
