SURREY URGED TO GET TOUGH ON CANCER WITH NEW 10K CHALLENGE P

eople in Surrey are being urged to get tough on cancer by signing up for an exciting event from Cancer Research UK. The city has been chosen to host Tough 10 for the second time, a 10k trail run which pitches participants against thigh-burning hills, muddy declines and tough terrain. Cancer Research UK is daring men and women across the South to brave the elements and sign up now for the fundraising challenge event, which takes place at Box Hill on the 18th November. Its Tough 10 series offers three different levels of difficulty to choose from at events across the UK – tough, tougher or toughest. The Box Hill route is ranked toughest so it’s a feat not for the faint-hearted. The adrenaline-packed event promises to push endurance levels to the limit, but all in aid of a good cause – raising money for life-saving research. Jenny Ainsworth, Cancer Research UK Event Manager, said: “We know the South have got what it takes to tackle Tough 10 and we’re delighted to be hosting the event at Box Hill for the second time. “Every day, around 130 people in the South-East are diagnosed with cancer*. That’s why we need as many people as possible to double knot their trainers and take on our stamina-testing course. “If the steep inclines don’t take participants’ breath away, the stunning views will. But everyone who takes part will know every thigh-burning stride will help bring us one step closer to beating cancer sooner.” Organisers hope around 500 people will enter Tough 10 at Box Hill and raise vital funds to help Cancer Research UK’s scientists research drugs, discover what drives cancer to grow and find new ways to detect the disease at an early stage. Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. But more funds and more supporters are needed to help bring forward

the day when all cancers are cured. Jenny Ainsworth continued: “We’ve got cancer on the run. Half of people diagnosed with the disease now survive. But half is not enough. That’s why we urgently need as many people as possible to sign up for Tough 10. “There are over 200 types of cancer and we won’t stop until we find cures for them all. The more research we are able to fund the sooner that day will come.” Cancer Research UK spent over £32 million in the South-East last year, on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research. Helen Allingham

21 November 2017 – 18 February 2018, Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village

Helen Allingham, Harvest Moon , 1879, watercolour. Private Collection

Helen Allingham, Feeding the Fowls, Pinner, watercolour. Royal Watercolour Society

This winter, Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village presents the UK’s first major public art gallery exhibition devoted to the artist Helen Allingham RWS (1848-1926).

A

llingham is one of the most familiar and well-loved of Victorian artists – in 1890 she became the first woman to be admitted to full membership of the Royal Watercolour Society and her work was highly acclaimed by leading contemporary critics, including John Ruskin. Despite this success there have been few exhibitions dedicated to her work.

Watts Gallery, Down Lane, Compton, Guildford GU3 1DQ www.wattsgallery.org.uk 20 NOVEMBER 2017

This exhibition will seek to reassert the reputation of Helen Allingham as a leading woman artist and as a key figure in Victorian art. Bringing together rarely seen works from private collections together with important paintings from public collections, the exhibition will demonstrate Allingham’s extraordinary talent as a watercolourist and will examine how she became one of the most successful creative women of the nineteenth century. Having moved to London aged just seventeen, Allingham trained at the Royal Female School of Art and the prestigious Royal Academy Schools. By 1870, she was pursuing a professional career as a graphic artist and children’s book illustrator, becoming the only female founding member of The Graphic, a new illustrated weekly magazine. Illuminating Allingham’s early career the exhibition will display an array of graphic works, including the illustrations to Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd when first published as a serial in the Cornhill Magazine. Following her marriage to the renowned Irish poet William Allingham in 1874, Allingham began to focus on working in watercolour producing vivid depictions of rural England. As the boom of industrial development continued to threaten traditional rural life, Allingham’s art captured

unspoiled landscapes and historic cottage architecture in exquisite detail; she was passionately concerned for the preservation of the English countryside. In 1886 she became the first woman artist to be awarded a solo exhibition at the Fine Art Society entitled Surrey Cottages. Her depictions of Shere, Witley, Haslemere and other villages across the region will be included in the show. Many of these picturesque timber-framed cottages can still be identified today. While living in Surrey, Allingham became friends with the leading Arts and Crafts gardener, Gertrude Jekyll, painting vibrant images of Jekyll’s experimental planting at Munstead Wood. Preparatory studies of plants and flowers will be exhibited alongside a depiction of Jekyll’s famous South Border in full bloom. Widowed at the age of 41 Allingham took on the sole responsibility of bringing up her three young children, pursuing a professional career right up until her death in 1926 age 78. Helen Allingham continues Watts Gallery Trust’s programme of exhibitions devoted to pioneering women artists. Guest curated by the pre-eminent Allingham scholar Annabel Watts, it offers an unprecedented overview of the artist’s work. It will be accompanied by the publication of a new edition of Annabel’s book on Allingham. Drawing on extensive research, this publication seeks out the actual cottages painted by Helen Allingham a century ago, comparing how they look today with the original watercolours. Dr Nicholas Tromans, Brice Curator, says: “Allingham was a hugely popular Victorian artist, and having got to know her work at first hand for this exhibition, I can see why. Her pictures are exquisite objects, expertly created. They also manage to evoke a very particular atmosphere, a sweetly melancholy depiction of a rural world which is somehow both real and dream-like.” Guest curator Annabel Watts says: “There is much more to Helen Allingham’s cottage pictures than meets the eye; they represent her concern for the future of the English countryside. She witnessed for herself the unnecessary demolition of ancient buildings by unscrupulous landlords and her paintings serve as a permanent record of their existence whatever their fate might ultimately be.”

LONDON’S TOP FIVE MUSEUMS

L

ong gone are the days when we were reluctantly dragged to museums by our parents or teachers. Now, many of us eagerly await new exhibitions, and the result of this year’s TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards (released today) show just how popular these institutions have become. Chosen by members of the public, five spots in London have made it into the top 25 list of best-rated museums in Europe - more than any other European city - and most of them are free to enter. If you’ve not been to them before, now might be the time to find out what you’re missing. Victoria & Albert Museum (Nearest tube: South Kensington) Coming first in the UK is no small achievement: the V&A has overtaken last year’s UK winner, the British Museum, and has pushed the likes of Paris’ Musee du Louvre and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum aside. The V&A’s free to view collection is devoted to art and design, with objects ranging from Art Deco furniture to paintings by John Constable and JMW Turner. It’s the museum’s temporary exhibitions (which do require an entry ticket) that you really need to keep an eye on. In recent years shows dedicated to the likes of fashion designer Alexander McQueen and music icon David Bowie have been hugely successful. National Gallery (Nearest tube: Charing Cross) Walking through the National Gallery is a veritable who’s who of art history, with everyone from Botticelli to Titian, Van Gogh and Monet making an appearance. Ever heard of a little painting called Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh? It’s just one of the many masterpieces on display as part of the permanent exhibition - open free to the public. Once you’ve done admiring the artwork, pop into the elegant National Dining Rooms for a bite to eat. It was designed by world famous architect David Collins, who also designed the celeb-magnet bar at Mayfair hotel Claridge’s, and has window views

22 NOVEMBER 2017

spilling onto Trafalgar Square. British Museum (Nearest tube: Holborn) Speaking of impressive buildings, the British Museum can definitely be counted among some of the most incredible structures in London. The previous two museums on the list are largely dedicated to art, but in the British Museum it’s all about history. Don’t be fooled by the name, because there are artefacts from all over the world. Set aside several hours to learn about the ancient Egyptians or the Bronze Age in Europe. Remarkably, the museum is free - although tickets are required for temporary exhibitions. Natural History Museum (Nearest tube: South Kensington) If you haven’t visited the Natural History Museum since you were a child, now is the perfect time to go. Dippy - the giant dinosaur who filled up the main room of the building - has now been replaced by Hope, the 25.2-metre-long blue whale skeleton who hangs from the ceiling. It’s free to view the mind boggling collection of animals, fossils and skeletons so expect long entry queues at weekends. The annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is also held here, although ticket prices apply. It’s worth combining with a trip to the neighbouring V&A both are on Exhibition Road in South Kensington. Churchill War Rooms (Nearest tube: Westminster) Located in a secret underground bunker from World War Two, the Churchill War Rooms are the best place to learn about the former British Prime Minister’s life. It was in this confined space beneath Westminster that Churchill and his senior ministers mapped out the Allied victory. Many items of memorabilia have been placed just as they would have been all those years ago. This is the only museum in the top five which doesn’t have free admission. Expect to pay £19 for adults and £9.50 for children.

Our fishmongers’ stalls are laden with seafood and shellfish (Seafood Week runs from October 6 to 13) and, depending on your budget, there’s oceans of choice when it comes to a bright white to complement your catch of the day...

Here are some favourites that caught our eye... Tesco Finest St Mont AOC 2015, France Fresh citrus fruit, peach and quince are at the core of this aromatic, crisp dry white from the Gascony region in south-west France. Made for Tesco by the pioneering Plaimont co-operative, it’s a blend of local grapes and closes with bright acidity. Enjoy with white fish such as fried skate. (£6, Tesco) Italia Pinot Grigio 2016, Italy With generously fresh lemony flavours, attractive floral and citrusy aromas and a tingle of lemony acidity on the finish, this is the perfect easy drinking dinner party white that would pair brilliantly with light dishes such as seafood spaghetti. Nice at the special price. 24 NOVEMBER 2017

Corney & Barrow White Burgundy Domaine Dominique Cornin 2016, France Worth shelling out for, Corney & Barrow’s new own label white Burgundy is part of their Mid-week Meals mixed case. The organic producer has turned out a crowd pleasing chardonnay to pair with hot crab pots and the wine charms with pear drops on the nose and a lovely creaminess to the tangy citrus and tropical fruits which are framed by a limey juiciness. (£14.95, Corney & Barrow) Tempus Two Silver Series Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Australia A new release from Australian wine brand, Tempus Two, the Silver Series sauvignon blanc is fresh and vibrant and described by the winemaker as having ‘delicious passionfruit and lime aromas and a splash of tropical fruit that perfectly balances its crisp, clean finish’. Down Under, they suggest pairing with tiger prawns, but we like shell-on prawns from our beautiful coastline. (£7.99, Waitrose, in-store)

Christmas at Kew 2017 As twilight falls…the magic begins… 22 November 2017 - 1 January 2018

T

his winter, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew will transform into an enchanted wonderland as the much anticipated Christmas at Kew returns. Kew has once again teamed up with entertainment promoter Raymond Gubbay Ltd to create a brand new illuminated trail, featuring over one million twinkling lights. The festive adventure will begin with a path lit by hundreds of illuminated globes winding through glittering trees festooned with silvery shards of light, snowflakes and stars. Children and adults alike will delight at the sight of an enormous glowing Sledge Tree constructed from over 360 wooden Santa’s sledges. Families will then be greeted by the enthralling sound of a chorus of Singing Trees as they head towards one of Kew’s most stunning attractions, its glistening lake, with an ethereal spectacle of light and sound with the lake’s two islands slowly coming to life as angelic voices call and respond across the water. The trail will feature many new and unique installations by a range of artists; an ephemeral ultraviolet walkway of thousands of continuously moving bubbles, trees wrapped in ever-changing ribbons of light, and a majestic weeping beech tree dripping with sparkling lights. An installation from French art studio TILT, will form an enchanted promenade of hundreds of huge glowing peonies, giant grasses and coloured reeds. Along the trail, there will be the chance to stop for delicious roasted chestnuts, mulled cider and other tasty offerings, while kids will be thrilled at the chance to toast their own marshmallows.

30 NOVEMBER 2017

The Great Broad Walk Borders, the world’s longest double herbaceous border, will for the first time form part of the trail. The stroll along the borders will culminate in a host of giant trees, made from thousands of colourful, sparkling flowers complete with holographic petals, from creative studio PITAYA. Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas at Kew without the show-stopping Palm House finale. The pond and magnificent glasshouse will spring to life with an explosion of colourful criss-crossing laser beams, jumping jets of light, and new for 2017, kaleidoscopic projections playing across a giant water screen. Youngsters will delight in spotting Santa and his elves performing along the trail, and White Peaks will once again become a festive fairground with a Victorian carousel and helter-skelter rides for the little ones. As the winter trail comes to an end, visitors will be greeted by the scent of mulled wine, mince pies and other festive foods from a variety of enticing stalls at Victoria Plaza. The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run Celebrating the history of French Motoring

T

he Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox, takes place on Sunday 5 November, providing a magnificent spectacle and offering members of the public a rare opportunity to watch more than 400 pre-1905 veteran vehicles embark upon a 60-mile journey from Hyde Park to Madeira Drive on Brighton’s seafront. In true tradition, the 2017 Run takes place on the first Sunday of November at the break of dawn, just before 7am, and commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14 November 1896, which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. It was this Act that raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 mph to 14 mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag. The Locomotive Act was still widely known as the ‘Red Flag Act’ and, to mark this milestone, a red flag was symbolically ripped in half at the start of the Emancipation Run, just as it is today. In 2017, more than 120 years after the very first Run was held, the event aims to follow in the footsteps of last year’s success, which saw one of the best finish-rates to date. Year after year, the Run sees a great number of French automobiles join the comradery. In 2016, a remarkable 49 per cent of all entries were French-manufactured vehicles – and, in recognition of all the French automobiles and participants, this year the Run is celebrating French Motoring and its contributions to the industry. This year also introduces a new route. On leaving Hyde Park, the veteran cars will pass many

40 NOVEMBER 2017

well-known landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Horseguards and Big Ben before crossing Westminster Bridge. Participants will then leave London via Kennington, Clapham and Morden, passing through Balham. After Morden, the revised route by-passes Sutton on the A217 to Banstead, Tadworth and Reigate before re-joining the traditional route at Redhill. From here it takes the A23 to Horley and the midway halt at Crawley. A special viewing area in Crawley High Street has been established for the thousands of spectators who turn out to support the Veteran Car Run. From Crawley, the route heads to Brighton via Pease Pottage, Staplefield, Cuckfield, Ansty, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Clayton where it joins the A23 for the run into the finish at Madeira Drive. The new route will ensure there are plenty of fabulous viewing spots for the many thousands of spectators who line the streets to wave the veterans on their way. The Run is just one element of the Royal Automobile Club’s London Motor Week, which includes the free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show, to be held on Saturday 4 November. The Veteran Car Run is supported by Title Partner: Bonhams, Official Partners: Hiscox, Your London Airport Gatwick, Harrods, Abels, Visit Brighton, Chopard, Hagerty, Hattingley Valley, RAC Motoring Services and Total, and Manufacturer Patrons: Honda and Renault. HOW TO MASTER THE

VICTORIA BECKHAM SOFT TAILORING LOOK

words: Katie Wright

S

leek and slouchy has become VB’s signature style, but you can emulate her approach with just a few strategic high street purchases. Remember when Victoria Beckham was known for the taut, second-skin dresses she not only sent down the catwalk but wore herself almost non-stop? Well, times have changed, and now the 43-year-old says ‘soft tailoring’ is her signature look, for both her designer collections and her personal style. That means out with the constricting frocks and in with slouchy trousers, silky shirts and mannish blazers. It’s a style that catwalk brands do well, but you don’t have to pay luxury prices to get the VB look - and there are just three key pieces you need (plus a pair of box-fresh white trainers). First up, a pair of wide-leg trousers, cut straight rather than flared so they pool satisfyingly around your ankles. Add to that a shirt or blouse that’s fluid (not crisp) and top it off with a slightly oversized blazer (pushed up sleeves are optional). Neutrals lend themselves well to tailored pieces but these sleek shapes mean you can experiment with clashing block colours or choose tonal shades of camel, cream or red from head to toe. Whatever the occasion, here’s how to master the relaxed tailoring look - it’s as easy as one, two, three...

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY

In Conversation with PLASTIC surgeon Ms Helen McEvoy Your breast surgery questions answered

What can I expect when coming in for a breast surgery consultation? I would discuss your breast concerns and wishes including enlargement, reduction, uplift (mastopexy) or re-shaping. I also undertake breast reconstruction after breast cancer. I would give you a detailed description of each procedure and also address any concerns, problems and breast issues. I offer an open, honest and personalised approach to what we can achieve and how we can achieve it. Most importantly I will ensure you understand everything we have discussed and give you time to go away and consider your options before making any definite decisions.

How do you choose the right breast size for each patient?

What is considered to be a good breast size is a very personal choice and is always a joint decision between my patients and myself. We will discuss what I can achieve to give a natural look, which is what most patients are looking for.

What happens if somebody wants very big breasts, but you think it won’t suit their body?

There can be significant long-term problems from this type of surgery. I would therefore explain all my concerns during the consultation. Once informed, patients understand, take advice and normally go ahead with a more suitable size.

Where would the surgery take place? Either in Surrey or London depending on the patient’s preference.

Will I be in pain after the surgery?

With many different types of breast surgery available any pain will be appropriately controlled post operatively. With this in mind patients are able to move around comfortably after the operation.

How long does the healing process last?

Surgical Treatments

Most wound healing is complete within 2 weeks but it will take longer for scars to fully settle. Depending on the type of surgery undertaken, I may advise avoiding strenuous activity for a longer period of time

Cosmetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery including:

Are there any possible side effects?

• Breast Enlargement

Any operation can have side effects but these vary depending on the type of procedure. I discuss all possible side effects with my patients so that they are fully informed.

• Breast Reduction

For most patients many years depending on the type of operation and the patient.

• Liposuction

How long do the results last?

• Breast Lift • Tummy Tuck • Body Contouring

Will the surgery affect breast-feeding?

For most breast procedures women are able to breastfeed in the future.

LOOKWITHFORWARD TO SPRING LONDON FASHION WEEK HIGHLIGHTS We look back at the big hitters of fashion week and what these collections tell us about next spring. WORDS: Katie Wright

Here’s what happened at the ‘big five’ shows of London Fashion Week. Burberry The front row: Notably, grime artists Stormzy and Skepta were invited, which hinted at Christopher Bailey’s direction this season. The models: Kaia Gerber, daughter of Cindy Crawford, made her London catwalk debut. The look: Drawing heavily on the house’s archive, the sheepskin jackets, tartan coats and oversized knits were this time imbued with a new streetwear feel. Bailey even went as far as resurrecting the beige Nova Check print that the brand was forced to 48 NOVEMBER 2017

virtually abandon 10 years ago after it became the calling card of D list celebrities and football fans. It was a risky move, but one we can see the fash pack lapping up.

Topshop

Topshop The front row: New British Vogue editor Edward Enninful cosied up to Kate Moss and her daughter Lila Grace. The models: A diverse line-up including Adwoa Aboah, Jourdan Dunn and Joan Smalls. The look: Creative director Kate Phelan’s last collection was a jubilant send-off, a riot of party girls in 90s Sohoinspired bodycon frocks, strappy dresses, metallic skirts and big fluffy coats. There was some gorgeous daywear too - particularly the cable knit jumpers and extra-long, straight-leg suit trousers.

Burberry

Christopher Kane The front row: Alexa Chung and Selma Hayek, whose husband is CEO of Kane’s parent company Kering.

L

ondon Fashion Week seems to get bigger every year, with more names to know on the schedule and models to keep track of on the catwalks (and Instagram). But the same stalwart designers have remained the most influential for the last decade, so it’s to them we look to find out what’s in store for next spring that’s when the designer collections hit department stores and the high street’s catwalk-inspired creations are unveiled. If September’s shows are anything to go by, the 90s will remain very much in vogue, stripes will get a squiggly makeover, and the Queen is going to be your number one style icon.

The models: In-demand newcomers Cara Taylor and Kiki Willems walked. The look: As usual, a seemingly disparate bunch of references ruffles, handkerchief hems, chintzy prints and sugary pastels - all came from a single source, which this season Kane said was the idea of the domestic goddess. But this homemaker is hiding something, which is why her fluffy cocktail dress is worn with black latex gloves and her shoes come with kitchen mop fringing. The master of stylish subversion triumphed again.

Erdem

House of Holland The front row: Singer Ella Eyre, Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock and designer Henry Holland’s BFF Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud fame were in attendance. The models: A refreshingly diverse roster included Sudanese-born Duckie Thot and American Adesuwa Aighewi. The look: In a word, stripes. Well, waves, really. These psychedelic squiggles, Holland’s ode to surf culture, emblazoned everything from slip dresses to midi skirts to sweatshirts. The tinsel pool slides and pirate hats that accompanied almost every look may not be to everyone’s taste, but the undulating stripes were a real winner.

All images courtesy of PA Photo/Handout

The front row: Erdem superfan Alexa Chung, actress Jenna Coleman and Brit model Erin O’Connor. The models: Another designer who favours interesting newcomers, Erdem Moralioglu chose Cara Taylor to close the show. The look: Imagining a 30-something Queen transported to a New York jazz club (inspired by time spent in the royal archives), Moralioglu sent out a slew of stunningly opulent satin gowns and frock coats. A 50s silhouette ruled throughout - on full skirts or pencil skirts - and there was lots of sequin and crystal embellishment alongside the designer’s trademark florals.

LIPOFIRM PRO

Caroline Weller

puts it to the test

from Life Magazines

Can it really banish the bulge? Cutting edge technology for fat reduction, body sculpting, skin tightening and cellulite reduction say the adverts. It just sounds too good to be true and having tried various expensive fat busting treatments I can’t help being a tad cynical.

L

isa Harris from Lisa Harris Skin Science tells me it does indeed work, and my ongoing battle with my over large flabby belly (that I like to blame on the menopause rather than overindulgence) makes me decide to give it a try. I started with a body consultation with Lisa who explained what would happen over the next six weekly treatments. Lisa who has a new clinic in Knightsbridge as well as Weybridge, has over 25 years in the world of beauty and is extremely informative. A few days later I arrive feeling optimistic at the Weybridge Clinic. My first appointment would last about two hours and involve a Lipofirm Wrap and Non-invasive Cryolipolysis before moving on to my six weekly sessions of Lipofirm ProEleanor would be looking after me and after changing into some rather unflattering paper underwear I settle down for my treatment. LIPOFIRM WRAP Lisa has already explained that it works by breaking down fat cells and aiding the body in transporting released Triglycerides through the body’s natural waste processes allowing the contents of the fat cell to be naturally eliminated from the body. . Being bio active, Lipofirm WRAP™ is highly effective when used with technologies such as Cryolipolysis, or Radio Frequency . The wrap solution needs to be activated by heat so I was wrapped up first with polythene, then a foil sheet and lastly a thick blanket. Eleanor then left me to have a rather relaxing power nap! NON-INVASIVE CRYOLIPOLYSIS I’m told the Triglyceride in fat cells can be crystallised when taken to a particularly low temperature. Cryolipolysis uses controlled & advanced cooling technologies to target stubborn pockets of fat selectively and eliminate

fat cells through a gradual process. The treatment wasn’t painful although my skin felt a little tender afterwards. Apparently it can take up to 2 months to see the full result however some clients begin to see results after 2 weeks. LIPOFIRM PRO Arriving at the clinic for my first Lipofirm Pro treatment my stomach definitely feels less bloated after my Wrap and Cryo session. After Eleanor applies gel to my stomach area the process begins using a machine which uses a radio frequency technology and dynamic muscle activation to break down and disperse fat and cellulite whilst also firming the skin. The machine has an attachment that looks rather like a shower head and has metal roller balls which make contact with your skin, and then delivers pulses as it is constantly moved around the area being worked on. A rather strange sensation, a bit like tiny hot rubber bands pinging onto the skin. I didn’t find it painful but it sometimes got a little hot. My treatment lasted about 40 minutes and after I got used to the sensation I found it quite relaxing. Lipofirm Pro works on a Triple Action Protocol; Release, Remove and reshape. For the scientific side of things please contact Lisa and her team or see their website.

6 WEEKS LATER As the weeks went by I noticed my clothes were looser but I didn’t think I really looked any different. I think this is because the changes happen gradually. However, when Eleanor presented me with the photos she had taken at the beginning of my treatment and those at the end, bearing in mind I had not altered my eating and drinking habits, or participated in any additional exercise during my course, the treatment has most definitely made a difference and I’m delighted! It has even spurred me on to exercise and eat more healthily and even cut down the glasses of wine.

H

ashtags like #ad and #spon (short for sponsored) are rife in the beauty blogging world, but you won’t find them on Lisa Eldridge’s YouTube

channel. The 42-year-old was already one of the world’s most in demand make-up artists when she started uploading videos in 2009. “I think that’s why they’re popular, because the products I use are never paid for or sponsored by brands. I have never taken a penny through sponsorship,” says Lisa, whose celebrity clients include Kate Winslet and Kim Kardashian. And, unlike most vloggers, Lisa, who is also creative director for Lancome, didn’t have ads on her videos - until recently, when she decided to turn them on for the first time for altruistic reasons. The revenue will be going to children’s rights charity Plan International. Lisa figured that since 93% of her 1.7 million subscribers are women, they wouldn’t mind enduring a few ads in order to support a femalefocused charity. “I have got a really nice group of people... I don’t really get weirdos, I get the people who like to answer each other’s questions and talk to each other. It’s a very affirming community,” she says. A few days ago she posted a photo on Instagram, declaring: “You think I’m listening but I’m really doing your make-up in my head.” So what does a make-up legend think are the most common make-up mistakes - and what can we do to correct them? Here are Lisa’s top 10 do’s and don’ts, and the products she says you can’t go wrong with.

1. Do use SPF50 every day “A really good SPF that works for my skin tone, that 52 NOVEMBER 2017

is probably what I spend most of my money on. Heliocare do a tinted version which is gorgeous and it’s not that expensive.” Heliocare Gelcream Colour SPF50, £23.50, EffortlessSkin.com

2. Don’t overdo your eyebrows “I don’t like the really ‘blocked’ brows where you don’t see the natural hairs. I personally hate the way it looks. I much prefer when the brows are more feathered and lighter so you have a sense of the hairs.”

3. Do apply mascara from the roots “I aways apply as much as I can at the roots first. Get down to the roots and hold [the wand] there and massage very slowly as long as you can. It’s all about getting the bulk on first, otherwise the lashes can get very heavy at the end.” Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes Mascara, £24.50

4. Don’t forget to blend your contour “Contouring looks really bad when it’s badly applied - when it’s the wrong colour and it’s too heavy. The edges should be blended. When it’s done really well, it’s amazing.”

5. Do use concealer sparingly “I like to have more coverage where I need it and less where I don’t, because it tricks the eye. The person is looking at you and thinking, ‘You’re not really wearing a lot of make-up’, when actually you can get away with wearing quite a lot when it’s not heavy all over.” Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Camouflage High Coverage Concealer, £22

8. Do use face masks liberally “I am obsessed with face masks so most days I will wear one. I love Susanne Kaufmann, which is a natural Austrian brand. That is probably my favourite at the moment.” Susanne Kaufmann Moisturizing Mask, £41, Naturisimo.com

9. Do go easy on the bronzer “The thing with bronzer is that it’s always hard to take it down once you’ve done it. Apply it with nice light layers over your cheekbones, cheeks, temples, across the top of the forehead and a little bit on the neck.” Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder, £36.50, John Lewis; Bourjois Matt Illusion Bronzing Powder, £5.95, FeelUnique

10. Do buy Japanese false eyelashes “They are just so much better and so much cheaper in Japan than they are anywhere else. There are so many incredible eyelash brands out there, like Dollywink. And they stick on so much easier because the band is light not heavy.” Koji Dolly Wink Eyelash 09, £10.73, YesStyle.com Watch hundreds of makeup and beauty tutorials on Lisa Eldridge’s YouTube channel.

6. Don’t overload your eyes if they’re small “Sometimes people can really close their eyes down with very heavy eyeliner and very heavy lashes. If you have naturally quite small eyes, that type of make-up will make them look smaller.”

7. Do use a primer Susanne Kaufmann Moisturizing Mask, available from Naturisimo.com

Give your health a shot A in the arm

dored by the A-list (Simon Cowell, Rita Ora and Cara Delevingne are said to be serious celebrity fans), Vitamin IV Infusions are an easy, effective way of delivering vitamins, minerals and amino acids directly and immediately into your bloodstream via an IV (intravenous) drip. Due to popular demand, Courthouse Clinics is now offering Vitamin IV Infusions at a selection of clinics across the group, including Esher and Maidenhead, courtesy of Advanced Nurse Prescriber Lucy O’Neill. Nurse Lucy is a highly qualified but very approachable medical practitioner, with 12 years’ extensive experience in the field of anti-ageing aesthetics and wellbeing. She prides herself on building a strong rapport with patients, helping them to look and feel great, from the inside out. Just as importantly, Lucy practises what she preaches: it was her own positive experience of Vitamin IV Infusions that prompted her to add them to her treatment portfolio. “I first learned about Infusions when I was feeling run down with no energy,” she explains. “I felt so much better mentally and physically after trying them, I wanted to give my patients the same benefits I experienced. And the reception so far has been brilliant. I get such great feedback from my patients afterwards – it makes my work really rewarding.”

I felt so much better mentally and physically after trying them, I wanted to give my patients the same benefits I experienced. So what exactly do Vitamin IV Infusions achieve? The precise treatment effects vary depending on the patient, but in general terms they can boost wellbeing, increase energy levels, lift your mood and hydrate your body. We all know that vitamins are essential for normal growth and staying healthy, yet our bodies can’t produce all of the nutrients we need to function and thrive, which is why more than one in three people take daily vitamin supplements. What’s less well known is that only 15% of the active ingredients consumed orally actually find their way into the bloodstream. That’s not the case with Vitamin IV Infusions, which deliver their benefits straight to your cells. Courthouse Clinics offers a selection of different Vitamin IV Infusions, which allows patients to select the best combination for their personal needs. The infusion process itself is painless, and takes just 30 minutes. For optimum results, a course of Vitamin IV Infusions is recommended, followed by monthly maintenance treatments. Interested? TOP TROUSER TRENDS Give your plain black slacks a rest and make a pair of these trendy trews the star of your outfit. WORDS: Katie Wright

N

o longer the bland building blocks of an outfit, trousers have really come into their own recently, with interesting cuts, colours and embellishments giving the humble slack a new lease of life. And as summer begins to fade (sigh), these nextlevel separates are crying out to be the star of an outfit, for days when it’s too cold for bare legs but too warm for thick tights.

These are the trouser trends that will give your latesummer wardrobe a stylish leg up... 1. Split leg trousers A truly transitional fashion hero, split leg trousers come with a ready-made air vent and offer a subtle way to show a bit of leg. For the office, pair wide-leg culottes with a boho blouse and blazer, or take things up a notch for evening with full-length trousers, a Bardot top and heels - the hem should just graze the floor. From flamenco flared hems to frilled seams, these are serious statementmaking separates. Keep things simple on your top half with a block colour cami or tucked-in tee. 3. Paper bag waist trousers To the untrained eye, these cinched-waist trousers with their tapered legs may look unflattering, but actually, the high waist means they help to elongate your legs - as long as you don’t choose a very cropped pair. Wide-leg styles are even more forgiving, particularly when worn with heels and a fitted top to emphasise your waist. rom tomato to crimson, lipstick to oxblood, no matter what you call it, the catwalk consensus is that red is the colour of AW17. While poring over all the pictures from the AW17 catwalks, there was one colour that stood out more than any other not only because of the many flashes of almost neon-bright scarlet, but because it was as if all the designers had got together and decided that this season, red is THE colour. Whatever the reason, it’s very good news, because the shops are now full of the of ravishing hue, from oxblood to tomato, in everything from shoes to suits. Inspired by Prada’s frocks, Max Mara’s coats and Armani’s suits, that means loads of gorgeous options for our winter wardrobes...

champagne hues, subtle pinks, purples and plums. Combine textures such as satin, velvet and faux fur, key to creating a luxurious, romantic feel. For a contemporary vibe, dress a bed with white bed linen and a velvet throw, and add an eclectic mix of cushions. In any style of bedroom, the bed should always take centre stage. For a more feminine interpretation, add art deco-style mirrored furniture and on-trend metallic accents, lamps and accessories.” Tip: For smaller rooms, avoid heavy patterns and dark colours, as they’ll look too busy, while at the other end of the scale, larger rooms shouldn’t be too minimalist, as they can look cold.

Hotel style “A boutique hotel-style bedroom is a hugely popular choice and this crisp, smart look appeals particularly to couples who want a style that suits both their tastes, and is neither overtly feminine nor macho,” says Samantha. “Colour is key in creating a haven of rest, so look at palettes you’re both drawn to. If you can’t agree on which shade, opt for something pale - like a soft grey or off-white hue - that provides a neutral backdrop. Enhance the mood and ambience with carefully considered lighting, such as task lighting for bedtime reading on either side of the bed. We offer Zip & Link beds, (£1,722 for Zip & Link mattress; £2,289 for Zip & Link mattress and bed set), ideal for couples who have different preferences. This type of bed is made up of two mattresses with different comfort levels, which can be used together or separated into two singles.”

Tip: Dare to go for a paler carpet, as this is normally a ‘low-traffic’ area and hopefully, where people don’t wear shoes. Neutrals or greys will work with most schemes, and carpet is warmer underfoot.

Boudoir on a budget “Autumn’s the perfect time to put a stylish twist on your bedroom’s design. For a simple and easy way to rejuvenate the look of your space, consider changing a headboard,” suggests Samantha. “A tall, winged headboard gives a room the ‘wow’ factor and completely transforms its aesthetic into something sophisticated and special. Or opt for a simple metal or wooden one, if you don’t want the bed to dominate. Dress a bed with throws and cushions in a new colour scheme - deep blues, teal and indigo are in fashion. This colour could be used to paint a feature wall behind the bed, or take the shade over the walls and ceiling for a cosy, cosseting feel. Even a basic makeover can make a difference. Focus on decluttering and tidying surfaces - too many visual distractions can make it hard to relax and sleep. Change bedside lamps or just replace drawer handles and curtain ties with more decorative items. All these can make a surprising difference to the room’s atmosphere and appeal, and all for a minimal cost.” Accessorise your bed with Furniture Village’s Velour Cushions, £39 each, and a Cera Mustard Table Lamp, £119. Tip: If you’re space-starved, consider fitted furniture, which can create up to three times more storage space than freestanding pieces, as it can be tailored to precisely fit the room. Executive Home Office Design

T

he essence of an executive home office is inspirational space, which combines work with pleasure. Productivity and function matter but so does your enjoyment of a high quality environment. Quality and elegance are personal concepts, depending on the art, colour and spirit of place we each enjoy. We would still recognise excellence in the choice of another. Morgan Stewart Interiors design and build executive home offices, across the UK and beyond to embody this feeling. Creating naturally productive spaces, which are a pleasure to enter.

Balancing Key Elements As with a commercial office, we want to understand how you use your home office. Our designers consider your workflow, the items you like to have at your fingertips, IT and communication requirements. This is not a reason to sacrifice function for form, or reduce light and space. The basis of good design is to resolve functionality needs with ideas led by your vision for your personal space. Colours you favour, or materials you enjoy around you are primary factors. Subtle additions which make you feel at home should be included, along with how your office fits into your property. You may have a substantial, separate space available, or wish to blend a smaller home office into the overall ambience you enjoy. Privacy and a devoted workspace can be achieved with either.

Furnishing Your Home Office An executive home office should feel like a place you want to work and may need to look as professional as you do. If you meet clients, colleagues, or contractors at home. Comfortable seating arrangements are important for this need and for you. A fine office chair is one of the shrewdest investments you can make, for productivity and for your long term health. If you need shelving, or storage this should blend subtly into the design, rather than being in the way. Traffic flow apart, every ancillary furnishing item is there to serve you, not the other way around. The centrepiece of your space may well be 68 NOVEMBER 2017

an executive desk. Carefully chosen to meet design needs and to match the way you work, the methodology you employ for paperwork, or multiple screens.

Morgan Stewart & Personal Service Making an office at work feel individual can matter, far more so for your office at home. Our designers work closely with you to ensure, your personality and taste are clearly reflected. From warm tones you love, to flooring of your choice, to featuring artistic pieces, the office we build will be yours. Our job simply to make your wishes reality. Every executive home office we design, shares a principle. They are unique because you are, your approach to work, your need to merge work with an individual home. Morgan Stewart Interiors design staff are highly experienced, they are happy to offer advice and innovative solutions. Their task still always begins with listening to you, the home office you want is personal. Please contact Andrew or Stewart for a coffee and a chat. www.morganstewartinteriors.co.uk

eerali believes that interiors should be a balance between unique character and complimentary storytelling that weaves experiences together. For the design of Aria, the show home was inspired by the leafy countryside of Hadley Wood, allowing of the introduction of specific tones and colour palettes, giving an edgier look that could compliment and soften the monochromatic architectural details. The resulting design has a formal yet relaxed feel. The abstract artwork and quirky details give the interiors a unique style. It’s a dramatic statement, with a sophisticated elegance which runs through the property and is exemplified by the chosen light fittings, furnishings wallpapers and fabrics. Neerali works primarily on residential projects based in Aldenham, Herts, focusing on designing for both private individuals and developers, with clients within the Hertfordshire, Berkshire and Surrey areas. Her signature approach spans many styles in order to deliver truly bespoke and tailored designs for each of her clients. colour theory. For Aria, all of these played a part in crafting the interior vision. Playing off the masculine style of the architecture, with the monochromatic details highlighting the high ceilings and large windows, and expansive views across Hadley wood, inspired the design to bring the feeling of the outdoors into the space. The design was heavily influenced by nature to have a subtle autumnal feel with hues of emeralds, purples captured in the antique mirrored and brushed gold tones of the furnishings and the soft furnishings. It also balanced out the house with complimentary tones to soften the hard architectural details, allowing for the space to be more approachable and to be more attractive to a wider potential audience. “My favorite room in the house, is the formal Living space,” says Neerali. “It has the perfect amount of drama, yet is understated and luxurious all at the same time. From the velvet used for the occasional chairs, to the antique mirrored coffee tables that have such a classic and elegant look, yet really work well with the contemporary joinery. The chosen accessories and abstract artwork breaks the neutral palette and accentuates the rich colours.” Bringing together a varied spectrum of materials, underlines the style Neerali likes to bring to a space. “Textures really add layers into the design that enhances, and showcases different features of the interior. Interiors should evoke feelings and experiences, just like a work of art.” For more information and to book a consultation visit: www.neerali.co.uk or call 07581 312295.

LET THERE BE LIGHT! British furniture designer and manufacturer Blackbird London have launched their debut furniture collection, Let There Be Light, in-store and online. The collection comprising of handcrafted tables, mirrors, lighting and accessories, was designed by Founder & Creative Director, Maggie Calmels and her partner Louis, taking inspiration from the cosmos and solar system. Each piece of furniture is handmade in their central London workshop, where they have devised a range of metal textures specifically for the Let There Be Light collection including the popular ‘crater’ finish which evokes the pitted surface of the moon and the ‘ripple’ texture which represents the sand dunes on Mars. To complete each item, Blackbird London hand-apply metallic finishes in old gold, antique silver, bronze and white bronze to represent the colours of the cosmos. All pieces from the Let There Be Light range can be found at Blackbird London’s boutique showroom in Battersea, or online at www.blackbird-london.com.

Home Owners Need to be Wary of “Quick-Fit Fitters”

S

ometimes UK homeowners expectations of delivery for bespoke replacement double glazed windows and/or replacement doors are not very realistic, as some don’t appreciate how much work is involved. Put simply, tailor made windows and doors are just that, made to measure products in terms of design, colour and size. Fenestration products not designed, measured, fabricated or installed correctly can lead to unwanted long term aggravation & disappointment for property owners. To highlight this, if a double glazing supplier has a surveyor, fabricator and/or fitters sitting round waiting on your order, it would be sensible to ask why? There are lots of really decent double glazing installers in the UK, many of whom work primarily on recommendation. These sorts of firms are likely to be booked up many weeks in advance, because as a general rule customers would rather wait and have their replacement windows or doors measured right, manufactured right and installed properly, than have all the hassle caused when one or more of these operations is rushed to the detriment of a decent job. It is better to have really good quality, well-

90 NOVEMBER 2017

made windows and doors which are fitted a couple of weeks late, rather than to have them poorly designed, and/or made defectively and/or fitted in too much of a hurry. It is easy to understand why customers are tempted to rush things along wanting their project completed as fast as possible, or customers who get pressurized by their builder or developer to buy windows and doors from a firm that their builder “recommends” that will deliver the products when the builder wants. Builders are notorious for wanting to fit new windows and doors as quickly as possible so they can move on to their next building project! Builders can therefore be keen to suggest buying windows and door products where they can get them fast, and not necessary the products that will be the best investment for the property owner, who is after all the customer, so should be the person specifying which windows and doors they require, and fitted by whom they trust to do a good job that will leave them with well installed products. To assist householders and give them greater peace of mind when appointing an installation company, consumer champions Which? established

“Consumer champions Which? established an endorsement scheme labelled ‘Which? Trusted Traders’”

an endorsement scheme labelled ‘Which? Trusted Traders’. In 2014 the region’s largest independent double glazing manufacturers and installers, Hazlemere Window Company, joined this prestigious scheme after they passed an intense assessment process, proving that they met the strict requirements set out by Which? and satisfy the high standards they expect of a local and reliable trader. It demonstrates to customers that those who achieve Which Trusted Trader status have proven themselves as having been trustworthy up to that point, and that they are firmly committed to offering complete fairness and transparency at all times. Hazlemere Windows have since passed two further Which? Trusted Traders inspections, so remain as Which? approved suppliers to this day. To undertake a replacement window project properly, a professional surveyor should take careful accurate measurements (so they end up fitting properly), then raw materials have to be ordered (any coloured products are likely to be on a longer lead time) along with sealed units from the glass suppliers to ensure these will fit into the frames that are being specially made. Next, the products then need to be scheduled for production, as most double glazing manufacturers will not have skilled workers standing round. Once the products have been fabricated the installations department will need to confirm up the provisional date they will have hopefully pencilled in with you when you placed your order. Understanding the above process for bespoke fenestration products should set off alarm bells if a double glazing installer says they can supply and fit within a few weeks. Ask yourself, why have they not got a waiting list? It is wise to be wary of any double glazing company “promising” a quick

delivery in order to get you to sign up with them, as the last thing you want is to regret handing over a large deposit to the wrong company for the sake of a few weeks wait. So beware the quick fit window or door fitter! The danger of paying over a deposit is that once a customer has paid a supplier, they are then really stuck with that supplier (unless prepared to lose the deposit) however long that supplier then takes to supply and fit the products. Before ordering from any double glazing company, ensure a) you’ve done enough research so you can be confident your chosen partner will still be around in 10 years’ time!, b) you’ve read recent satisfactory customer reviews, c) you’ve seen the products first hand they will be supplying so you know for certain what to expect, and d) that they are Which Trusted Traders. If you’d like any free help or expert advice on a no obligation basis from independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd on any double glazing project you are considering, contact them on 01344 989938 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

Antique York Stone

American Oak wood effect Porcelain

The Beauty of Natural Stone W

hether you want a country farmhouse look or a sleek metropolitan style, natural stone and the new-generation lookalike porcelains offer countless different options and solutions for any location. Look to native English stone flooring to give a traditional feel of luxury and permanence. Probably the most perfect expression of this would be reclaimed antique York stone, used in Britain for centuries. Rescued from old buildings and given a new lease of life, it provides an authentically aged finish. It’s just one of many new and antique English flagstones available, including Cotswold, Portland, Purbeck and Lincoln limestones. Each has its own distinctive character and look. Natural stone is an obvious choice for period houses, whether you are restoring original glories or creating a new, modern space. Many classic floors were laid in geometric designs, which look just as sophisticated and relevant today as in Victorian or Georgian buildings. Whether you opt for a classical chequerboard or something more complex, both the pattern and the stones used to create it can be tailored to suit the style of your space. If you have altogether more minimalist leanings, look for large format tiles in a calm limestone or marble. Available in a wide palette of colours from white and cream through to soft greys, many varieties offer a consistent colour with little or no veining or fossil inclusions. Classic Italian marbles such as Carrara bring a crisp, modern look to a wide variety of settings. Natural stone is a versatile material with many decorative uses, from floors and fireplaces to large slabs used as wall cladding. In some locations 92 NOVEMBER 2017

however, stone may be too weighty or unwieldy for floors or walls - making the new generation porcelains such a great solution. Improvements in 3d and digital printing have made vast improvements in the quality of both stone and wood lookalike porcelains, making it possible to get the authentic look of a natural material with the advantage of a thinner, lighter tile. One hidden secret of any floor (stone or porcelain) is the installation. There are many horror stories of builders laying floors upside down, using three different colours of grout in the same floor and staining floors with engine oil. For floors or walls, always use an experienced fixer, who will select tiles properly mix the variation of colour to provide the most pleasing effect and add that expert touch that transforms a good tile into a great floor. 5 STEPS TO CREATING A

COLOURFUL AUTUMN BARREL Use our step-by-step guide to create a beautiful arrangement for the season. words: Ella Walker

W

ith autumn upon us, it’s time to think about what you can plant now that will give you greenery and colour in your garden throughout the cooler months. It’s also a great time to plant up a container, which can be put on the patio to brighten up the garden, or placed by the front door to welcome guests. Sarah Squire, deputy chairman at Squire’s Garden Centres, advises: “The key things to remember are choose a container that you like the look of, add good quality compost, and above all, choose plants you love. “Think about colour combinations - make sure you include some evergreen plants and then add either vibrant reds, oranges and yellows for an autumnal feel, or choose pinks, purples and whites for a softer, more romantic look.”

1. Choose your container

3. Select plants to extend the season

4. Position carefully

3

A large skimmia, which is an evergreen shrub with clusters of attractive flowers and berries, makes a great focal point. Plant bulbs such as Narcissus ‘Tete-a-Tete’ miniature daffodils, irises and muscari to give an injection of colour early next year. Add other flowering plants, such as cyclamen, violas and pansies, or try an ornamental cabbage for additional foliage interest. 96 NOVEMBER 2017

2

2. Fill with compost

Squire’s recommends Westland Multi Purpose Compost With Added John Innes, which encourages stronger plant development and longer plant life.

1

A wooden barrel is an attractive choice but you could choose anything you like. Make sure that the container has holes at the bottom for drainage.

4

5. Water and feed

Put the largest plant such as the skimmia in the middle of the container. Carefully place bulbs two to three times their depth and one bulb width apart, pointed end up. Then put smaller plants around the outside.

5

Water every few days if it hasn’t rained, and use a feed such as Miracle-Gro all purpose continuous release plant food, which will encourage bigger, lusher plants with noticeably more blooms.

CHOOSING A NEW SOFA WORDS: GABRIELLE FAGAN

B

uying a new settee can be stressful. Three experts share their top tips and trends to plump for. Over the course of a sofa’s life (which lasts, on average, 11 years) it will witness 1,236 arguments, 2,105 kissing couples, 3,135 films watched by families, and overhear 2,631 phone conversations, according to new research for Furniture Village. So, it’s all the more important then, to choose a sofa that doesn’t just look good and fit in, but can withstand all that activity and emotion. Experts reveal their buying secrets to help you choose the best seat in the house...

‘Green and orange are the hottest sofa colours right now’ “We’re always keeping abreast of trends and this year, in Italy, at Salone del Mobile - which showcases the latest in furniture and design from around the world - we saw two colours dominate - burnt orange 98 NOVEMBER 2017

and forest green,” says Alison Hill, creative director at DFS. Forest green reflects our desire to bring the ‘outside in’ and orange is a complementary colour to green. Curved-back ‘cocooning’ furniture is increasingly popular, too. We’ve really seen craftsmanship trending in recent years - highlighted in detail on upholstery and frames. Raising furniture forms on plinths - another popular look - provides a sense of continuous space in a room, and is an advantage if you’re constrained for space. All cushions are not created equal - some people like a firm and supportive feel, while others want something soft and squishy to sink into. We have fibre filling for a soft feel; a foam core for balanced softness, and support and foam for a supportive, slightly springy feel. An extra set of loose covers are available to buy with our sofas, too.” Alison’s favourite sofa... “The Fliss is country-style meets urban living, with its sweeping curved arms and stunning turned legs. I love the pink and plum colour combination.”

sofa will work wonders. A large corner unit may be a good option to consider, as this offers flexible seating solutions, as well as adding structure to open-plan spaces. If you’re working with a more compact room, consider a raised sofa with smaller proportions and slender tapered legs, which will help create the illusion of space and light.” Malcolm’s favourite sofa... “The Nicoletti Movimento Recliner Corner Chaise is my top pick, as its deep, luxurious foamfilled seats and optional touch sensitive power recliner function make this a stylish and superbly comfortable choice,” says Malcolm.

‘Big families should opt for a statement sofa’ “A sofa’s one of the most used and best-loved pieces of furniture in our home,” says Malcolm Walker, director of product at Furniture Village. “Far from just being a place to sit, it can be the centre of many pivotal moments in family life whether it’s arguments and the subsequent making up, or a power nap after a long day. But the sheer amount of time that we spend on a sofa, along with the number of activities that we do while lounging on it can mean it needs to stand up to a lot of wear and tear - particularly if you have children. As the seasons shift from summer to autumn, we have seen the re-emergence of earthy hues and tactile finishes. Worn leathers and raw materials pair together to create a rustic decor, perfect for those looking to achieve a sense of warmth and comfort,” says Malcolm. Velvet continues to enjoy a renaissance around this time of year, with jewel tones and brass finishes accompanying this textile, to introduce a sense of sophisticated luxury to any scheme. The two key concepts to take into account when choosing a sofa are the space you are working with and your own personal style. A sofa will naturally become the focal point in any space, so ensuring that it captures the look you want is essential,” says Malcolm. If your home caters for a big family, then a statement

‘Check the basics’

“Check a room is not only large enough for the size of the sofa, but also that its proportions are right”

“We’re fans of sofas that are big enough to lounge around on, look good and most importantly are super-comfy,” says Charlie Marshall, founder of Loaf. “People are becoming more adventurous with colour in their homes, as sites like Pinterest are providing people with inspiration, making it easier for them to get bolder colours right. Our new fabric collection for 2018 is full of vibrant hues, including Carnival (a red/pink coral hue), Maize Yellow, Clean Green and Deep Blue Lido, in velvets and linens. We recently updated our Souffle Sofa as a modular design, and each unit can be customised in a different fabric and colour for a statement look, or in one fabric for a classic look.” Check a sofa has a solid beech frame, held together with screws and dowels, rather than glued and stapled chipboard versions, which aren’t as durable and break easily If you have your very own team of ‘stain spreaders’ (young children and pets) removable covers are a good choice, as they can be easily whipped off for cleaning,” advises Charlie. Always measure up before buying. Check a room is not only large enough for the size of the sofa, but also that its proportions are right. High-back sofas can be overpowering in a smaller room with a low ceiling. Fitting a new sofa through narrow doorways can be tricky - ask for access advice - bolt-on arms can be a great solution.” Charlie’s favourite sofa... “The Pudding Sofa is a fresh take on a classic design and it has a super-deep comfy seat. It looks great in our classic linens and neutral fabrics, as much as it does in our bolder choices, such as Burnt Orange velvet.”

ho cares about current trends in wood flooring when it seems we have been buying parquet wooden floors for what seems an eternity. Some things will always remain classic and stylish, and both herringbone and chevrons are patterns that are here to stay. But, they can be funky too, like our individually time worn herringbone multi coloured floor. Brave, bold and exuberant. But of course it’s the possibilities that are the heartbeat of a creative mind, and there are endless possibilities when it comes to wooden flooring. Designs are possible with wood that are not even conceivable with any other floor finish. Durable too, which we all seem to overlook. Take a look at Copenhagen airport. Its first wooden floor was laid in the 60’s and was made form solid padauk, a slight reddish African wood that is incredibly hard wearing. It is still there today, looking even more elegant than the day it was installed. There is a multitude of beautiful exotic wood species on the market today and, its always nice to explore the tones of these woods before simply opting for oak, the most popular of all wood species. But even oak has its magical qualities. We’ve made everything from oak including boats houses and musical instruments, so oak is here to stay. 102 NOVEMBER 2017

Protecting Plants From Winter Frosts Take measures now to protect your tender plants before the first frost gets them.

If frost is forecast, keep a pair of old curtains to hand to cover borderline hardy plants overnight to prevent damage.

Move them indoors Many tender plants, such as geraniums, begonias and half hardy fuchsias will need to be brought under cover before the first frosts. Put them in a frost-free greenhouse or garden shed to give them the best chance.

Lift plants

A

s the weather cools down, plants will need covering, bulbs will need lifting or mulching and extra winter protection given to tender specimens which will have to be brought indoors if they are to survive the coldest months.

So, what steps should you be taking? Wrap them up Use horticultural fleece, hessian or bubble wrap to wrap around permanent plants in pots. You need to stop the roots from freezing, which could ultimately kill the plant. If you have lots of pots, huddle them together near a house wall, where it will be slightly warmer. They will insulate each other and you can use one large length of protective material to protect all the plants. Tie the cover round them securely so it doesn’t blow off in winter. Next time you’re planting a tender permanent specimen in a frost-resistant container, line the inside wall of the pot with bubble wrap to save you having to do it in the autumn. Plants in borders which can’t easily be moved, such as tree ferns, should be wrapped in horticultural fleece, from the base of the trunk upwards. The leaves of tree ferns and other tender plants such as cordylines should be tied upright, packed with straw and covered with horticultural fleece, plus a layer of mulch should be laid over the root area.

Make a frame Small tender shrubs can be protected with makeshift frames made from chicken wire or a wigwam made from bamboo canes packed with straw and then covered in netting. In wet weather, you may need to temporarily cover them with clear polythene to stop them rotting in the wet. 106 NOVEMBER 2017

Dig up tubers and rhizomes of tender plants like cannas and dahlias once the foliage has been blackened by the first frost. Cut them down to within 5cm (2in) of the base and dig them up with a fork, taking care to avoid damaging the rhizomes, remove all loose soil and dry them off, before storing them in boxes of dry sand or soil in a cool, frost-free place like a shed (for dahlias) or a greenhouse or conservatory (for cannas). If you live in a mild area, you may get away with just a thick mulch such as straw or compost around the roots. If you can provide shelter for dahlias or cannas grown in containers, bring them under a porch or into an unheated greenhouse.

NOVEMBER INTERIORS TRENDS While the temperature may be dropping as autumn arrives, there’s no need to feel the chill indoors. The season’s three hottest new decor trends are rich with glowing colour, pattern and detail, and we can’t wait to try them. WORDS: Gabrielle Fagan Midnight tropics Deep moody blue shades and a focus on texture and luxury come together for this opulent trend. “Midnight Tropics sees the summery tropical theme continue and develop throughout the autumn and winter,” says Clotilde Passalacqua, interior design leader, Ikea. “Instead of featuring bright and playful colours, this trend pairs rich, dark tones - such as navy and emerald green - with accents of brass and gold, to create an exotic and luxurious look with a touch of opulence. Accessorising with succulents and tropical plants is key, as is artwork and patterns that take their cue from nature, and in particular, feature foliage.” Many major home brands have embraced this luxe look, including Marks & Spencer with its Manhattan collection (main image). It has a rich palette of inky matte black and brass accents, and is inspired by the opulence of New York’s luxury hotels, with details including soft velvets and green marble, mixed with bold monochrome furniture.

“These shades pop against mustard and duck egg blue tones, seen on ceramics and home accessories, complementing this classic look. There are figures in a rich, brass metallic finish, and we have a fragrance of Applewood and Clove - a woody, spicy scent - all finishing touches for an interior which is cosy, nurturing and perfect for winter.”

Mulberry Check Throw, £15, Sainsburys Home

Moody blooms A berry-hued palette of blueberry, cherry, deep plum and purple, paired with designs featuring lush blooms, is a chic, seasonal way to interpret the fashionably botanical trend. “This season our collections draw inspiration from the humble tulip bulb that became more precious than gold and five times more expensive than a house. It’s a bulb that went on to inspire generations,” says Tricia Guild, founder and creative director, Designers Guild.

Hare Lamp, £30, Sainsbury’s Home

Woodland walk Aubriet Amethyst cushion, £95, Designers Guild

Our love affair with nature and the great outdoors continues, and one of the easiest ways to refresh an interior is to take inspiration from the countryside. “Woodland walk captures the tones and textures of an autumnal country walk, creating a cosy living space with warm aubergine and mulberry colours, used across chunky knits and patterned textiles,” says Andrew Tanner, design manager for home and seasonal, Sainsbury’s Home.

Navigating difficult property markets T

he aftermath of George Osbornes war on landlords is still having a powerful impact on the sales and lettings market in this area. No longer do investors want to build letting portfolios and bring much needed stock to the lettings market. However, as our local sales market slows down and particularly the upper end of luxury homes, we are seeing increasing numbers of developers and private individuals who are unable to sell (at the price they want to!). Many will have lenders breathing down their necks and considerable sums to repay in interest each month. With no obvious light at the end of this sales tunnel some are turning to the idea of letting. Importantly, new build and well-presented houses are in short supply and getting snapped up by eager renters so this provides a win-win for tenant and landlord. The house can be refinanced on a Buy To Let to release funds and ease the pressure. At the moment lending criteria is tough but rates are low so it’s a good time to fix a rate. Typically a 3+ year let should then wash its own face and bring the owner back to a better market. The theory for many developers is that the premium they have lost on not selling the house as a brand new product is paid back by the market having hopefully risen while it’s been let out. They may start this journey out of necessity but after seeing their investment paying for itself over many years, they have then chosen to retain that property longer than expected and use it as leverage or pension plan. The market needs a regular supply of quality properties to rent, now more than ever and if the ex-chancellor was intent on trying to strangle this, then agents, developers and sellers need to look

at how we can make difficult markets work in our favour and come out winning. Being a company that specialises in lettings we often worry that we will miss out on these prospective landlords as we don’t have them on the sales market. However what we find is that discerning investors prefer to consult and engage us as we can give them honest and realistic advice, independently of a sales department. We’ve navigated our clients through difficult markets before and never is it a better time to have an experienced agent on your side. Happy Birthday To Us! This month we are celebrating the 3rd anniversary of our lettings and property consultancy business. It’s been a roller coaster ride with a market that is keeping everyone on their toes. With 50 years industry experience behind us, Sheila and I opened our agency in 2014 when we saw a gap to create a truly bespoke, independent property consultancy focusing on the investment market in Surrey. We have already firmly established ourselves as a leading player alongside our corporate competition, regularly beating them. We have won a silver award for Best Letting Agent 2015 and we did more lets in the prestigious Ashley Park private estate than any other agent in 2017. Word of mouth and recommendations continue to be our best source of new clients. If you’d like to be part of our success, to find out what we do differently or just to chat property then we’d love to hear from you. Thank you to all of our loyal clients and customers
