T

he Investec Derby Festival held at Epsom Downs Racecourse is one of the biggest social events in the British calendar. The classic trials leading up to Investec Derby Day either encourage or dampen the hopes and dreams of breeders, owners, trainers, jockeys, racegoers and punters.

Only eight miles from Hyde Park Corner, Ham Polo Club is the last remaining polo club in Greater London. Ham has had many royal visits over its history. Prince Charles played at the club in several high profile events during the 1980s and 90s. Since 2000 Princes William and Harry have been on the field for a number of charity events over its history. As well as these big events there is a full programme of polo every Sunday.

Aircraft and vehicle displays, live period music and stacks more will top an unmissable day of nostalgia at Brooklands Museum’s annual homage to the 1940s on Saturday 13th May. 1940s Relived celebrates the fashion, music, style, vehicles and attitudes that epitomised this decade, giving equal weight to the Second World War and to its immediate aftermath - both important periods in the history of Brooklands.

Early June 2017, will see the opening of The Ivy Collection’s new site in the leafy village of Cobham, Surrey. The Ivy Cobham Brasserie will be situated on the bustling High Street and be open seven days a week, featuring an all-day menu offering breakfast, elevenses, lunch, light snacks, afternoon tea, cocktails, weekend brunch and dinner.

The Royal Windsor Half Marathon River Trail Run creates the perfect opportunity to experience the historically picturesque Thames Valley. With an idyllic start and finish at the foot of Windsor Castle, a royal home and fortress for over 900 years, the entirely flat river route guides you upstream to Maidenhead before heading back towards Windsor.

CHARITY NEWS Another hole-in-one for the Hospice Princess Alice Hospice thanked the amazing golfers of St George’s Hill Golf Club for their loyal and unstinting support at a cheque presentation on Friday 31 March 2017. The Weybridge Club raised over £32,000 in September 2016 with its annual Nelson Trophy Pro-Am golf tournament, which has been held in aid of the Hospice for the last 22 years. Thus far the Golf Club has raised in excess of £428,000 in support of the Hospice. Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Hospice was Fundraiser, Tim Iredale, who said: “On behalf of everyone at the Hospice I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who took part in the Nelson Trophy; the money raised over the years is quite astonishing.

“The Hospice can only do what it does best - provide much needed free high quality care and support for adults with life limiting illnesses - with the continued munificence of supporters such as those at St Georges Hill Golf Club. Their fundraising enables us to reach out to more people when they need us the most. We simply couldn’t do what we do without this outstanding support.” Christopher Pinsent, tournament co-organiser, said: “St Georges Hill Golf Club maintains very close links to Princess Alice Hospice and we are privileged to be able to support this local charity. We would especially like to pay tribute to Peter Stevens, a long standing member of the Club, who sadly passed away last year. Peter’s father, Edwin Stevens CBE, inaugurated the Hospice; Peter and his family have ardently supported the charity and the Nelson Trophy for many years.

“With the continued support of corporates in our local community such as Barclays, we are now busily organising the 2017 tournament, which will take place on Saturday 23 September.”

Dickensian Sponsored Walk Why just walk for charity? This Dickensian Sponsored Walk is a sponsored walk with a twist, walkers will start their walk from the Charles Dickens Museum at 48 Doughty Street, Holborn where they will also have the opportunity to explore the museum before or after the walk, free of charge. Walkers will then take in a number of sights over the course of the three mile walk that will be pointed out to them on a map that all walkers will receive at the beginning of their walk. They will then complete their walk at The George Inn, Southwark where a welcome drink will be waiting for them. If walkers feel that three miles isn’t enough of a challenge for them then they are welcome to make it more challenging by doing a 3-legged walk, wear full Victorian costume or carry a small child on their shoulders for the duration, for example. Kelly’s Cycle Challenge The Kelly’s Cycle Challenge returns for a fourth consecutive year with more of the same beautiful routes for you to enjoy. At Alice Holt HQ there will be stalls and activities to cater for all the needs of the cyclists and spectators who come to enjoy the atmopshere and cheer the cyclists in!

All three routes follow quiet country roads, with plenty of great views and open road riding to be had. The long distance is great for the seasoned cyclist, whilst the middle distance is a firm favourite, and will also suit those looking for a step up from the short course or those in training for a longer ride. The 25 mile route sets off later and is ideal for new riders plus families with older children. Enchanting Waverley Abbey House There is seldom a place where history and the modern day meet so often than at Waverley Abbey House in Farnham, Surrey.

T

his stunning Grade II* listed Georgian mansion sits gracefully atop a raised bank overlooking the river Wey and the remarkable ruins of an ancient 12th century monastery - Waverley Abbey. The story of Waverley goes back a long way, to 1128. Twelve Brothers and an Abbot travelled from L’Aumone Abbey in Normandy, at the request of the Bishop of Winchester, to establish the first Cistercian Monastery in England.

Planting a number of other abbeys around England, Waverley Abbey served for 400 years.

In the 1720s, Sir John Aislabie, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, purchased the Waverley estate and built a country mansion, where the presentday house is situated. In the 1800s, Waverley was purchased by Guildford magistrate George Nicholson, who was Florence Nightingale’s uncle.

Florence was a frequent visitor to the house, enjoying spending time with her dear cousins.

During the First World War Waverley was used as a military hospital, looking after some 5000 wounded soldiers. Many years later, thanks to

generous support, the Christian charity CWR was able to purchase the house and carry out awardwinning restoration and refurbishment.

Besides the CWR programme of courses, many in the field of counselling training, Waverley Abbey House is a thriving conference and events centre used by a wide variety of customers. It offers a unique environment for business meetings, training events, celebratory functions and bespoke events.

Each of Waverley’s elegant function rooms has its own distinctive character and atmosphere, bright and wonderfully lit, with breathtaking views of the grounds.

You can choose from a variety of catering options - summer BBQs on the lawn, cream teas, finger buffets, celebratory dinners and much more.

Waverley has its own chefs who prepare delicious seasonal menus using locally sourced ingredients.

The extensive grounds of Waverley can be hired for larger bespoke events, film shoots, team building or marquee functions. Both The Huntsman, Into the Woods and the upcoming re-make of The Mummy are just some of the international feature films that have been shot on the Waverley estate.

pring is here and with the weather warming up the preparations for the Hidden Gardens of Grayshott ‘Private gardens open for public viewing’ are hotting up. More than twenty five gardens are committed to open on Sunday 28th and Monday 29th May, several new gardens and some of the fabulous former favourites. Plants are being potted ready for sale and bakers are practising for some delicious homemade cakes that make visiting our gardens so tasty! The 1940s Relived - Saturday 13th May 2017, 10am – 9pm

ircraft and vehicle displays, live period music and stacks more will top an unmissable day of nostalgia at Brooklands Museum’s annual homage to the 1940s on Saturday 13th May. 1940s Relived celebrates the fashion, music, style, vehicles and attitudes that epitomised this decade, giving equal weight to the Second World War and to its immediate aftermath - both important periods in the history of Brooklands.

At the heart of the event will be the dance marquee with a rolling programme of music and FREE dance classes. Vintage specialist DJ Swing Shift will be providing the sounds, and singing live will be chanteuse Noelle Vaughn, well known as being one of the most authentic singers on the circuit. Brooklands Museum Marketing & PR Manager Paul Stewart says: “Close your eyes and you’ll think you’re listening to the wireless 70 years ago.” Any ladies not able to finesse their ‘40s look themselves need not worry, as a vintage-style hair and make-up parlour will be set up in the original Press Hut, manned by Hair That Turns Heads – a troupe of stylists who specialise in recreating the looks and styles from the period. The Race Car Bays of the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit will be the setting for a trade village where visitors will find sellers of original and quality reproduction clothing, home wares and ephemera from the era.

A display of vehicles will feature saloons, tourers, vans, trucks, lorries and even delivery bicycles from the period, and scores of re-enactor groups portraying everything from the Home Guard, RAF and Land Army Girls to civilian and family life will add to the ‘time travelling’ effect. There will be much interest, as usual, in who will win the Brooklands Best-Dressed Competition this year. Paul Stewart says: “Don your finest period duds, grab your partner and watch out for the sartorial scouts looking for the

UK’s finest outfits, with none other than ‘Winstan’ Churchill himself judging the finalists.”

All of the exhibition areas, aircraft, racing cars and motorcycles at the Museum will be open as usual from 10am until 5pm, and the on-site London Bus Museum will be running rides around the local area aboard appropriate period buses*. However, the music and dancing will continue in the marquee until 9pm with a bar to keep you cool. Last entry to the site is 6pm. Additional visitor parking is in The Heights off Wellington Way – as directed by special event signage on the day.

Guildford Cathedral Rocks!

G uildford Cathedral, often known more for its respected Choral traditions, will play host to a free concert in May given by the Guildford, Godalming and Farnham Rock Choir. Led by their energic choir master, Thomas George, The Rock Choir, which draws members from across the region, can’t wait to return to Stag Hill to bring their joyful music to so many members of the local community. The Rock Choir will perform a wide-ranging musical programme in the Marquee at Guildford Cathedral on Thursday 18 May, 11.15am – 12 noon, and guests can be assured of a warm welcome, some audience participation and a free cup of coffee.

The Dean of Guildford, Dianna Gwilliams said “We started these free monthly concerts last summer as part of our plans to organise a wider range of accessible events at The People’s Cathedral, especially during our extensive building works. We are delighted that our concerts regularly attract a large broad audience of all ages, and that they have become especially popular with groups from care homes. It is particularly pleasing that friendships are forming and we have many guests who would never miss one of our coffee concerts. The concerts offer an opportunity for talented local musicians to share their love of music at a unique venue and we are always happy to hear from performers who would like to perform, we value their support!”

The popular coffee concerts have embraced a wide range of musical top quality talent, including internationally acclaimed Czech cellist, Frankisek Bricius, ragtime music by the FB Pocket Orchestra, songs from opera and musicals by talented soprano Diana North and summer jazz performed by Erica Clarke, known locally as the Director of the Tormead School jazz band.

In addition to The Rock Choir in May, the Cathedral is looking forward to hosting future concerts given by Grange Park Opera, the U3A Choir and students from the Royal Grammar School to name but a few.

Guildford Cathedral is currently nearing the end of an extensive refurbishment project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to remove acoustic plaster containing asbestos from the interior ceiling, install new disabled access, rewire, redecorate and undertake many other essential repair works.

Guildford Cathedral Background to the Project In 2012, Guildford Cathedral began a unique journey to secure funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to transform a unique site of modern heritage and secure the long term future of an iconic Grade II* listed building.

“The People’s Cathedral Project”, a term coined in response to the 200,000 ordinary people who ‘bought a brick’ to pay for the completion of Guildford Cathedral, is an ambitious 30 month initiative combining urgent building repairs with an exciting community engagement programme to capture and reveal the rich heritage and history behind this stunning 20th century building.

Specifically the project aims to: • Secure Guildford Cathedral’s Survival through the removal of asbestos from the concrete ceiling vaults.

• Enrich the Visitor Experience by improving facilities, accessibility, audibility and interpretation.

• Widen and Deepen Community Engagement with the Cathedral and encourage a new generation to become involved, through: a) Capturing the story of the “The People’s Cathedral” through the memories of individuals and bringing to life the rich history of the Cathedral. b) Improving and enhancing the range of learning opportunities available for children and adults. c) Expanding the portfolio of volunteering opportunities enabling individuals to feel embedded in the life of the Cathedral.

The Cathedral’s application to HLF was only made possible by the generosity of people and organisations from across Surrey and beyond.

Their contribution through the Cathedral Appeal, including the MAKE YOUR MARK campaign, enabled the Cathedral to secure the £1.3m partnership funding necessary to submit the application The Marquee has also been a recent venue for special interest Heritage Lottery Funded events, including well-attended Heritage Study Days, family fun days, talks, concerts and an astronomical star gazing evening to celebrate Epiphany, which was attended by over 1200 people.

The Rock Choir.

Rock Choir is the UK’s favourite contemporary choir group, there are over 23,000 members across the UK with no need to read music or audition in its 11th year it is hugely popular. The Guildford Rock Choir members are led by Thomas George, a professional singer and teacher who trained in Guildford. Rock Choir performs upbeat and inspirational songs from many different genres, not just Rock. The members rehearse weekly over three terms a year putting together repertoire of music to perform at different events both locally and nationally.

The Guildford, Godalming & Farnham Rock Choir like to be able to offer many different experiences to members and they have been taken to many different and special performances such as the O2 in London, the NEC, Liverpool Echo arena, Wembley stadium, Wembley arena, Murrayfield stadium and Abbey Road recording studio. Performing in our local community is their primary role however raising lots of money in the process. In the last twelve months Rock Choir has helped raise £1.2 million pounds for different charitable organisations around the country.

he Royal Windsor Half Marathon River Trail Run creates the perfect opportunity to experience the historically picturesque Thames Valley. With an idyllic start and finish at the foot of Windsor Castle, a royal home and fortress for over 900 years, the entirely flat river route guides you upstream to Maidenhead before heading back towards Windsor.

Mainly run along river trail paths, the course incorporates many of the key landmarks that have made Royal Berkshire and its surrounding area so famous. It is an absolute must for anyone looking for a break from the pavement grind and a change of scenery.

The waved-start format creates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, limiting any participant congestion along the route. As this is a trail run it does not have a certified distance, but is still accurately measured the same as all of our other events.

The official cut off time to complete the Half Marathon event is 3 hours 30 minutes, making the event achievable, even if you decide to mix walking with jogging along the course. There is a minimum participant age of 17 for this event. For participant health and safety, they also ask that there are no prams or dogs taken out on the course.

Rory McIlroy to headline 2017 BMW PGA Championship 25-28 May, Wentworth Club

ory McIlroy has confirmed his participation in the 2017 BMW PGA Championship - the first tournament in the European Tour’s new Rolex Series.

The four-time Major Champion, who won the prestigious title in 2014, will take on the new-look West Course, which has been undergoing extensive changes since last year’s Championship.

All 18 greens were stripped of the old turf and re-seeded with a new creeping bent, improving both the appearance and playability of the putting surfaces, while four greens – on the 8th, 11th, 14th and 16th holes – were completely rebuilt and five greens – on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 12th and 15th holes – were partially rebuilt. A sub-air system was also installed on all greens to help make them firmer and faster, and new irrigation and drainage was also introduced. Furthermore, all bunkers were redesigned and reconstructed, with 29 bunkers completely removed from play, helping to more closely realign the course with Harry Colt’s original vision, whilst also being cognisant of the demands of the modern game.

McIlroy said he is looking forward to being part of a world class field for the launch event of the

The World Number Two will be looking to reclaim the title he won in 2014 when he came from seven shots behind with a closing round of 66 to claim a memorable victory at Wentworth Club, finishing one shot clear of Ireland’s Shane Lowry on 14 under par. “I’m excited to get back to Wentworth and hopefully I can emulate some of the golf I played in 2014,” said McIlroy. “The BMW PGA Championship feels like the start of the British golf season and you know everyone is excited. HPC, The London Polo Club The historic HPC, The London Polo Club is once again gearing up for the summer with their first event on Sunday 30th April, to kick off the polo season.

nly eight miles from Hyde Park Corner, the Club is the last remaining polo club in Greater London. he Lightbox gallery and museum announces the return of The Lightbox Photographic Open Competition.

Whether a photography student, professional, amateur or enthusiast, entries are invited from applicants under the theme of ‘Celebration and Anniversary’, in keeping with the ten year anniversary of The Lightbox in 2017.

Offering photographers of all levels the unique opportunity to have their work exhibited at an award-winning gallery and museum, the competition has a £500 prize for the entry selected as ‘Best in Show’, the Young Photographer’s Prize of £100 for the best entry by a 13-17 year old, and The People’s Prize of £250.

Applicants are encouraged to submit up to two digital photographs that represent their current practise, and an independent judging panel will select the best entries to be shown in an exhibition at The Lightbox in the Upper Gallery from Saturday 14 October 2017 – Sunday 7 January 2018.

The exhibition aims to showcase the diverse range of styles and talent in photographic artwork currently being produced in the United Kingdom, and so the competition is open to anyone living,

Ornamental cherry These colourful trees come into their own in spring when frothy clouds of pink and white blossom adorn their branches.

Among the loveliest is Prunus x yedoensis, the Yoshino cherry, a small-to-medium-sized tree whose spreading branches are covered with blush-white, almondscented flowers in early spring.

Smaller varieties include Prunus ‘Pandora’, which is smothered in pale shell-pink blossoms in spring, before the leaves emerge.

Many cherries also have fantastic foliage which emerges bronze or red after flowering, become green in summer and then turn rich autumn shades. Plant white or cream-flowered varieties with deep blue grape hyacinths or Euonymus fortunei for year-round interest.

BEST OF THE BUNCH Camellia

Catch crops

The blousy blooms on this flowering shrub are a sight for sore eyes in spring, providing bold splashes of colour amid lustrous green leaves. The common camellia, C. japonica, grows eventually to 9m and is best in partial shade in acid soil, so is best planted with ericaceous compost. Good varieties include ‘Elegans’, which has dark rosepink flowers and ‘Adolphe Audusson’, which bears dark red flowers. Other good picks include a smaller shrub, C x williamsii, which grows to around 5m, producing showy white to dark pink blooms. Don’t grow them where morning sun after frost will damage the blooms.

Plant some catch crops now which will take up border space and be ready to harvest before other slower maturing veg starts to grow. Sow lettuces, radish, spring onion, baby beets, tender baby carrots and chard - and sow little and often for a continuous crop. They will grow quickly if the weather is warm, so play it by ear as far as sowing is concerned and wait for crops to emerge before sowing a new batch.

Sow in shallow drills made with a stick, watering the drills before sowing if the soil is dry. Sow the seeds thinly, cover with soil and label them. Thin them out when the seeds are large enough to handle.

By the time your more tender veg such as tomatoes, aubergines and French beans are planted out and have started to take up space, you should have enjoyed some catch crop harvests.

Broccoli

Wallflowers (Erysimum) Wallflowers, with their clusters of sulphur yellow, burnt orange, burgundy and deep red flowers, make great plant partners with tulips and other late spring-flowering bulbs. Some are grown as perennials, others are used as biennial bedding plants. Left alone, they will live for several years, but can become woody and leggy with age.

They look their best in sunny borders, where their vibrant colours will shine, and prefer well-drained neutral or slightly alkaline soil. Good varieties include E. ‘Blood Red’, which produces vivid deep red flowers in spring, or the zingy yellow ‘Moonlight’, which makes a terrific subject for a dry wall or rock garden.

Tulip As daffodils fade, so tulips are emerging in too many different colours to mention and in many different varieties, some with almost frilly flowers which mingle happily with orange, yellow and burgundy wallflowers, others which look better grouped as stand-alone specimens.

If you’re looking for a more flamboyant variety, look to the Parrot tulips which have frilly, fringed petals in late spring. Good choices include the red and yellow T. ‘Flaming Parrot’ or T. ‘Estella Rijnveld’ which is red and white, while more subtle varieties include T. ‘Spring Green’, a Viridiflora variety with single cream flowers with partly greenish petals, or ‘Queen of Night’, a deep burgundy-black variety which looks great against a green backdrop mixed with acidcoloured wallflowers. Plant tulips in late autumn in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun. Some need to be lifted after they have flowered and stored until planting time comes around again, while others can remain in the ground to flower again the following year.

There are various types of broccoli - from the common green sprouting type with its flat dense heads, to purple and white sprouting broccoli with looser flower heads. Whichever you choose, the seed should be sown in spring, under glass if it’s cold, or in the open ground in late spring.

Use a cell tray if you’re growing it indoors filling the cells with multi-purpose compost and sowing two or three seeds in each, covering them with vermiculite. Once germinated, the seedlings should be kept in a cool, light position as excessive heat will produce leggy seedlings that struggle to develop. Alternatively sow the seed outdoors in rows and cover with 1-2cm of multi-purpose compost. Thin them to 10cm apart when they are big enough to handle. When they are around 12cm high they can be transplanted to their final position, around 45cm apart, and should be ready in late summer and autumn.

Thyme There are few herbs which provide as much visual interest as thyme, partly because there are so many varieties which produce loads of tiny flowers in summer and masses of scent when you brush against them or run your fingers through them. You don’t just have to restrict thyme to your herb garden. Plant some pretty varieties to trail over your rockery and they should settle well in full sun. Try T. serpyllum ‘Annie Hall’, a creeping, mound-forming plant with purple-pink flowers, or T. ‘Coccineus’, with its crimson-pink flowers, over walls or in paving. Other good verieties include lemon-scented thyme T. x citriodorus, and T. vulgaris ‘Silver Posie’. Thyme requires very little attention - water only in very dry conditions and feed sparingly.

Dill Dill is a match made in heaven when you put it with poached fish or add it to a mustard sauce.

And it’s pretty easy to grow. Sow seeds from April to June and you should keep up the supply of its aniseed-flavoured leaves throughout the summer.

Sow it in pots indoors or on a patio, and once the seedlings need thinning, just remove a few from the pots, as they don’t like their roots disturbed.

If you just want the leaves, grow dill in pots, but if you want seeds, plant them in an open, sunny, well-drained spot and water sparingly during dry spells, but don’t over-water them. As soon as there’s enough leaf to harvest, cut them - they can be used as a cut-and-come-again crop.

ith winter behind us and the pleasure of longer, sunnier days to look forward to, it’s natural that thoughts turn to the garden.

Spring is a wonderful season, full of sudden splashes of colour as daffodils, crocuses and tulips arrive, green shoots and buds appear and trees are transformed by blossom – gardens are waking up.

It also means there is plenty of work to be done.

Work that may well have been ignored through the cold winter months, and that now needs to be done quickly if your garden is going to look its best throughout the summer months. The list of things to do is long, with plenty of pruning, weeding, mulching and feeding to be done in the flower beds. Lawns need to be mowed regularly, they may need feeding and any moss raked out. Ponds will need clearing, patios cleaned and decking restored.

Fencing may need repairing or replacing after months of rain and wind.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by that ‘where on earth do I start’ feeling. And if you’re out at work during the week, have commitments on the weekend, or just have a lot of garden to deal with, you may well feel defeated before you’ve barely begun. But you don’t have to throw down your secateurs in despair and frustration. Your garden should be something you can enjoy, not a chore that you start to resent, so why not consider hiring a gardener to make life a little easier?

s soon as the weather warms up a bit, shrubs, hedges and trees seem to take on a massive growth spurt and it’s time to wield the secateurs. While first-time gardeners may act with caution, pruning isn’t actually that complicated - the secret is to tackle your plants before they become straggly and out of shape.

Pruning properly should give you more flowers, fruits and general vigour, stripping away old, dead wood and diseased branches, allowing sunlight to the centre of plants to rejuvenate them for the season ahead.

I know some people are worried about cutting plants back too much, but cut a buddleia back hard down to a couple of buds from the ground and you’ll see it tower with fresh blooms in late summer, while cutting back dogwood stems down to the ground will reward you with plenty of fresh, brightly-coloured stems the following season.

So, what should you prune and when?

Most evergreens including conifers don’t need pruning apart from a summer shape-up with shears in the spring. Slow-growing shrubs such as azaleas and hydrangeas also don’t need much pruning and should be allowed to keep their flower heads in winter, which will protect new buds from frost.

Faster-growing deciduous shrubs and trees will need pruning and these fall into two general groups: 1. Those that flower in spring and early summer, including forsythia, philadelphus, kerria and weigela: Flowers are produced on shoots that grew during the previous growing season and should be cut back as soon as they have finished flowering, to allow new shoots to form. Prune them too early, in winter or early spring, and you will cut off the flowers for that year. As soon as the flowers are over, cut back all the stems carrying dead flowers. Follow the stem down until you reach a strong bud and cut just above the point where it grows out on the main branch.

2. Those that flower from early summer onwards, such as buddleia, potentilla and fuschia: Prune in early spring before growth starts, cutting back the old wood (which looks darker and rougher) hard to a low bud, to boost new growth which will give you flowers the same year.

The general rule is if it flowers before mid-June, prune it immediately after flowering; if it flowers later, prune it in late winter or early spring.

Suckers can be a problem on roses and lilac.

Remove the basal shoots from the base of the bush or tree, usually below ground, tracing them to the point of origin, cutting them off close to the main stem. The leaves of rose suckers usually have seven leaflets instead of five.

cold winds during the winter and you’ll need to cut back the damaged leaves at the tips of the shoots to healthy wood, to make the plant look better and reduce the risk of disease.

Eliminate badly crossing branches which are rubbing against each other from shrubs and trees to prevent congested growth and reduce the risk of disease occurring through friction wounds.

If you have variegated plants such as euonymus which are reverting to green, cut out affected shoots when you notice them, as if they take hold, the whole plant could revert.

Clip small-leaved plants and hedges, such as box, with shears or a hedge trimmer if the plant is large.

Larger-leaved shrubs such as spotted laurel should be tackled with secateurs as shears can damage leaves which turn brown and then die.

Grey-leaved plants, such as lavender, can receive a light haircut in spring with shears but make sure you don’t cut back into woody old stems, or they won’t recover. Clip them again after they’ve flowered to keep them tidy. Rosemary can also be clipped in spring when it has finished flowering.

If you don’t want it to flower, clip it when you see buds starting to form in late spring.

Whatever else you do with your roses, you must prune them every year. Large-flowered rose bushes (hybrid teas and floribundas) need to be pruned between mid-winter and early spring, cutting back all the stems to around 15-23cm above ground level, cutting out dead wood and thin, weak stems. Shrub roses don’t need hard pruning now, but when you deadhead them in summer, remove 10-15cm of stem along with each spent flower.

Be good to bees

I

’m amazed at the numbers of bees I’ve seen on sunny days over the past couple of weeks, buzzing around the fragrant zingy yellow mahonia and purple heather in my garden.

It seems like a good omen for Bee Creative In The Garden!, a new campaign launched by the RHS in collaboration with The Wildlife Trusts to urge gardeners to help protect bees.

The campaign, which culminates in Wild About Gardens Week from Oct 23-29, featuring activities focused on how to help bees survive the winter ahead, comes as bees are under pressure due to loss of habitat.

In the countryside, 97% of lowland meadow has already been lost and the dramatic decrease in suitable habitats isn’t confined to rural areas. While the honeybee is an excellent pollinator, the charities are focusing on the equally valuable wild bees, including bumblebees and solitary bees.

Gardeners can download a wild bee-friendly gardening guide, and wildlife events and a ‘Bee Creative’ photo competition are running to

November 1 as part of the campaign.

Other charities are also joining the drive to help bees. Friends of the Earth is running The Great British Bee Count, now in its fourth year, from May 19-June 30, which invites the public to download a free app to help identify bees and learn more about them.

So, what can we do?

The charities will be arming gardeners with the advice, insights and inspiration they need to create habitats that support wild bees as they emerge from their nests in early spring to forage for food.

Boost your bee-friendly plant stock Grow more flowers, shrubs and trees that provide nectar and pollen as food for bees and other pollinators throughout the year - pussy willow, primroses and crocuses in spring, lavenders, meadow cranesbill and ox-eye daisies in summer, ivy and hebes in autumn and mahonia and cyclamen in winter. As a general guide, bees see purple and blue better than other colours and will use their senses to find other colours such as white apple blossom.

Different bee species prefer different flower shapes, so aim for a range from tubular-shaped flowers like snapdragons and wallflowers, to open-headed flowers like yarrow and verbena.

Let it grow wild Leave patches of land to grow wild with plants like stinging nettles and dandelions to provide other food sources (such as leaves for caterpillars) and breeding places for butterflies and moths. Take simple actions to manage your existing land, green spaces and gardens to provide food sources and/or breeding places for pollinators.

Cut grass less often Native flowering plants in grass areas, field corners, verges and specially sown flower-rich habitats support the greatest diversity of insect pollinators by providing nectar and pollen resources, places to nest or breed, and leaves for caterpillars.

Do not disturb Avoid disturbing or destroying nesting or hibernating insects in places like grass margins, bare soil, hedgerows, trees, dead wood or walls. Pollinators need to nest in safety so that they and the next generation can survive winter, to start again in the following spring.

Pesticides?

Try to avoid using them. Many people avoid chemicals and adopt methods like physically removing pests or using barriers to deter them. Try to encourage natural predators like beetles.

Build a pond Dig a garden pond to act as a drinking spot and help biodiversity.

Ponds are a magnet for beneficial insects and other wildlife.

Help tired bees If you find a tired bumblebee, mix sugar with water, place on a teaspoon and leave it in front of the bee, to act as a quick energy supplement.

very year I have a number of casualties among my terracotta pots, which end up broken or cracked in the depths of winter.

Replacing them can be an almost impossible decision, thanks to the plethora of garden pots available both from retailers and online, from huge Grecian-style glazed urns, to light resin contemporary planters.

If you’re going to invest in new pots, make sure they match the outside of your property and the style of your garden. If you live in a centuries-old cottage featuring original brickwork, for example, you may want to steer clear of contemporary urban planters.

While some manufacturers claim their terracotta pots are frostproof or frost resistant, I would advise you take care of them anyway to minimise risk of flaking and cracking.

Glazed terracotta pots are generally more

frostproof than unglazed ones, but if compost in the pot becomes waterlogged and then the water freezes, it will expand and crack the pot as well as killing the roots of your plants.

Move terracotta pots near to the house during the winter months or wrap them in bubble wrap or horticultural fleece to protect them - and make sure you have adequate drainage holes and drainage material in the pot, standing the pot on feet.

You can now be sowing true spinach - the annual, green leafy plant as opposed to perpetual spinach or leaf beet, a biennial which can be sown later next month - in short rows once every three weeks to give you a succession of crops throughout the summer. They key is to pick it when the leaves are small, before it starts to bolt. Prepare the seedbed well, raking in balanced fertiliser and water if the soil is dry and sown thinly into drills 1cm deep and 30cm apart. The first few sowings should be protected with cloches. Through March and April, continue to sow small amounts of true spinach at intervals. Thin the seedlings to around 10-15cm apart and use the thinnings in salads. Good varieties include ‘Giant winter’, which will overwinter from an autumn sowing, and ‘Mikado’ and ‘Amazon Seed’.

BEST OF THE BUNCH Elaeagnus This tough, fast-growing evergreen is ideal for growing as hedging, with its resistance to coastal winds and tolerance of the elements. Leaves may be plain green or silvery, or there are types with silver or gold variegation that look great in full sun. Small clusters of bell-shaped fragrant flowers are borne in summer or autumn, occasionally followed by small berries. Grow them in fertile, well-drained soil, preferably in full sun. Deciduous types are also available. Good bets include E. ‘Quicksilver’, a deciduous, clump-forming shrub which grows to 4m, flowering in summer, and E. x ebbingei ‘Gilt Edge’, a dense evergreen with green and yellow variegated leaves and creamy white flowers in autumn. Prune deciduous types in late winter or early spring and evergreens in mid-to-late spring.

What to do with a dead tree

Advice from Leigh Hopkins - Surrey & Sussex Tree Surgery

I

t can be heart breaking when a tree in the garden dies. Big or small, they are often an irreplaceable feature.

However, cutting down a dead tree should not necessarily be your first thought. Of course, if a dead tree poses risk to people or property then it should be removed, but if you have the space to safely keep it, there are other options available.

Over recent decades there has been a prejudice against dead wood in arboriculture, but attitudes are changing with a developing new trend to value biodiversity and to promote arboricultural practices that retain and even create variations in dead wood habitat niches in crown management.

So what can you do with your dead tree?

The first option is to do nothing! Standing dead trees provide a vast array of microhabitats, with many species specialising exclusively on one microhabitat. Fungi, lichens, mosses, birds, invertebrates and bats will all thrive from various habitats offered by dead trees. In fact, 10 of our 15 native bat species use cavities in trees for summer and winter roosts. If you would like to know more about how bats use trees, you can download a brilliant poster from www.bats.org.uk. Dead trees are also favoured by raptors (birds of prey) as lookout posts and food handling stations.

The second option is to reduce the structure of the tree to a point where enough weight has been removed to consider the tree stable and less likely to fall or be wind thrown. Once the majority of the weight is removed, the tree can be cut in a way which makes it purposely look to have been ravaged by a storm. Referred to as natural fracture pruning or coronet cuts, this is a way of replacing the flat cuts produced by a chainsaw, never seen in nature. The jagged cuts made during this process are designed to mimic natural branch breakage, and also help to create those microhabitats I spoke of before.

You can see this technique in the before and after photos of the dead Sweet Chestnut. This Sweet Chestnut is roughly 250 years old and resides in The National Trustâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Petworth Park. Overhanging a popular footpath through the park, rather than remove the tree, we significantly reduced the weight and therefore the risk to the public, while maintaining and creating habitats which will

hopefully last for decades to come.

Rather than remove the entire trunk, we put the customer in contact with Nick at 3D Wood and he created the only wooden terracotta warrior in Surrey (that I know of).

he Sculpture Park in Churt Village, Surrey is one of Britain’s most atmospheric selling exhibitions with on average 700 pieces of outdoor sculpture along two miles of trail, set within 10 acres of picturesque woodland and wildlife inhabited water gardens fed by two natural streams. H

e’s spent more than five decades searching for, breeding and developing some of the world’s best

clematis.

Expert grower and genial gentleman Raymond Evison, who has championed compact and highly rewarding cultivars suitable for containers and smaller spaces, is now looking for maximum impact with his latest Chelsea showstopper.

Showing me around his impressive clematis nursery on the Channel Island of Guernsey, the framework is already in place.

It’s a contemporary seashore scene featuring undulating metal frames which will be adorned with ‘waves’ of white and blue clematis, featuring a montage of more colourful varieties of ‘flotsam and jetsam’ below. More than 2,000 plants are being grown for the exhibit.

It’s likely you will have passed some of Evison’s famously compact clematis in your quality local garden centre. Indeed, his nursery produces more than two million of these beautiful climbing plants a year which are exported all over the world - China and Japan are currently particularly fond of his world-famous blooms, but you can grow them just as easily at home.

Over the years, his business - like him - has gone through peaks and troughs.

Suffering in the recession, four years ago Evison sold his farm and home to plough money into the business to keep it afloat, and has fought his own personal battles with bowel and prostate cancer.

Anyone else might have thrown in the towel, but not Evison. And now business is on the up again.

“I never considered giving up,” he reflects. “We now have new markets in China, a trial order has gone to South Korea and the US is growing.”

So, how can you achieve success with compact clematis?

Evison advises: • Don’t use a plastic pot. It will heat up too much during the summer and won’t give the clematis any root protection.

• The container should be a minimum of 45cm (18in) deep and the same diameter. A plant in that pot size should be OK for around five years before transplanting it to a larger pot.

• Good drainage is important. Use John Innes No 3 mixed 50:50 with a multipurpose compost.

• Clematis don’t like their roots in the sun so if you are growing clematis in a container, surround it with summer bedding plants in the top of the pot to give added interest and colour and create its own microclimate. Remove the top 3in (10cm) of compost, replacing it with fresh, when you take out the bedding plants at the end of summer.

• Plant new plants deep - an extra 6cm (2-3in) deeper than the pot that it came in. They are climbing perennials and need to build up roots down below. Planting more deeply can help prevent large-flowered varieties from succumbing to clematis wilt.

• If the plant gets clematis wilt, cut it down and, if you have planted it deeply, there’s a good chance it will grow back.

• Plant the strong-coloured clematis in the sun and paler shades in the shade. Those which grow in a shaded area only need three to four hours of good strong sunlight per day.

• For the best results, grow clematis through other plant material such as roses, ceanothus, pyracantha. If you want to grow it up a wall, grow it through other plant material.

“The process started in 1994-5. We could see that people would have smaller gardens and less time for gardening and so we thought it was important to breed and develop more compact clematis that would flower for longer and give better value for money.”

The ones grown specifically for containers are compact, with more branches and more flowers per stem. You will see flowers near the base of the plant as well as at the top of it.

“If you look at some of the old clematis varieties, they will have a solitary single flower on the end of a stem. Our clematis flower up and down the stems.”

While historically timing and method of pruning has depended on the type of clematis you grow - Type 1, 2 or 3 - the compact ones are less complicated. Most need pruning in late winter or early spring, cutting all stems back to 15-22cm (69in) above soil level.

Three new Evison varieties are being launched at Chelsea this year - Sacha, a mid-deep blue, a double red called Charmaine and a white type called Kitty, named after a young leukaemia sufferer, the niece of a friend of Evison, launched in conjunction with the Anthony Nolan Trust.

When it comes to pink fabrics, we often associate it with lightweight, delicate materials, like silk. So what could be lovelier (and more practical) than introducing the shade to a scheme with items that are also strong and sturdy? Thankfully, designers are going full-on rose this season and weaving it into heavier furnishings, with wools and rugs popping up in pink, adding texture to the ‘livingscape’ and looking blooming marvellous. “Wool is naturally associated with the winter months, simply due to its cosy texture and warming properties,” says Martin Aveyard, design director, Bronte by Moon.

FLAWLESS FINISH Want to go whole hog and paint your walls pink?

Taking the leap can be as panic-inducing as it is exciting - es pecially if it doesn’t result in the photo finish you were hoping for. So you don’t get it wrong, think about the direction your room faces and how it looks when the sun shines. “Pale pink looks best in a room with abundant natural light - showing off a sense of freshness”, says Kayleigh-Ann Whybrow, senior technical colour consultant, Johnstone’s Paints. “Team Rosebud, a particularly popular colour this year, with white trim and furniture, to allow the colour to pop. Why It Pays Property Owners Dividends to Opt For

Technologically Advanced Replacement Windows

W

e all know it makes sense to replace inefficient, outdated or inefficient existing windows, given the ever rising costs of electricity and gas, with the most affordable thermally efficient replacement windows in the UK marketplace.

However, the upfront costs can be a reason to keep putting off improving the aesthetics, living environment and keep putting up with thermally inefficient out dated windows and doors. Given home buyers now expect a property to be fully double glazed (or a large reduction on the asking price), one should be pragmatic and if you don’t

have the cash flow to replace all the windows and doors in one go, then do them in stages, starting with the ones in your living rooms and/ or bedrooms first, so you get the maximum benefit from stage one of your home improvement investment.

Technological advances in the United Kingdom double glazing industry over the last 10 years or so have caused the first and second generations of replacement double glazing (which at the time was a significant improvement on single glazing) to be superseded by high performance “thermally broken” energy saving efficient windows, enabling far better energy ratings to be achieved.

WER’s (Window Energy Ratings) were introduced by the British Government many years ago to help UK consumers know how thermally efficient any particular combination of frame, gaskets and glass sealed units were. Back on 1st October 2010, the Building Regulations changed so that from then on double glazing installers, suppliers and home owners had a legal responsibility if replacing windows, to replace them with either an independently tested “C” rated, “B” rated or “A” rated window, with until fairly recently, an “A” being the highest rating available, and “C” being the minimum standard permitted under the current

Building Regulations.

This legislation brought about a major sea change in the UK double glazing industry, whereby it had to suddenly scrap any outdated non-thermally broken window products (which were unable to achieve the minimum “C” rating) for higher quality, better designed, more expensive, thermally broken products, whether or not the window frames made out of aluminium, timber or UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride).

The resultant improved internal living environment and financial savings on energy bills for property owners has led to much of the UK housing stock being better insulated, so much so that home owners looking to sell their properties with older outdated double or single glazing are severely disadvantaged, or at the very least not able to achieve the sale price they had hoped for.

For any double glazing manufacturers to achieve a decent window energy rating they need a frame that is thermally broken (i.e. where the outer pane and inner pane are separated, so that the cold on the outside cannot interfere with the warmth on the inside) and a high specification sealed unit with a warm edge spacer bar separating the inner and outer glass panes which is filled with an inert gas like Argon, which not only insulates, it helps with sound reduction too.

Recent technological advances now enable certain UPVC or PVCu products to obtain even greater energy ratings than “A”. Some companies use triple glazing to achieve better than an “A” rating, whereas others have opted to improve their double glazed frames, making them more robust as well as more thermally efficient in the process.

Triple glazing sealed units costs more than double glazed sealed units, simply because there are two warm edge spacer bars, rather than one, and three panes of glass rather than two. This means triple glazed units cost more to replace if they break down or crack than double glazed units, a factor worth noting if choosing between these two options.

If the most thermally efficient windows on the planet are not well fitted, they won’t perform, so it is important to select an experienced

The dividends therefore, in terms of lower heating bills start immediately after having well fitted thermally broken energy saving windows installed. It therefore pays to have them all done, even if in phases.
