ROLLS-ROYCE SUNNINGDALE UNVEILS NEW LUXURY SHOWROOM

Located in a prominent location in the heart of Sunningdale, Rolls-Royce Sunningdale has been completely transformed over the past 18 months both architecturally and aesthetically, making it almost unrecognisable. The original showroom has been significantly extended, offering more space to showcase Rolls-Royce’s exquisite products and providing visitors an unparalleled experience, in line with Rolls-Royce’s continuing evolution as a true global luxury goods brand. A terrace, with views over the Berkshire countryside, is an entirely new addition to the showroom; a relaxing and inviting space for clients to enjoy.

The redesigned showroom, spanning two levels, now showcases the marque’s contemporary visual identity. The space offers clients an immersive experience from the moment they step foot into the building: the front door is modelled on RollsRoyce’s famous Pantheon grille and provides a discreet, tantalising glimpse of what lies within. The doorway is topped by the marque’s iconic figurine, the Spirit of Ecstasy.

Inside, the new showroom continues to exude sophistication, contemporary luxury, and creativity, yet still recognises the importance of heritage for the marque, with citations from the

founding fathers of the brand throughout the showroom. The Cabinet of Curiosities, an eclectic mix of intriguing, timeless and legendary design objects, is designed to spark the imagination and conversations as part of the commission process. The pièce de résistance, the Atelier, houses some of marque’s most exquisite examples of craftsmanship, including wood veneers, leathers, embroidery threads in a variety of vivacious hues, as well as lambswool samples. The surface-finish

samples are presented in the familiar Rolls-Royce speedform shape, making it easy to imagine the almost endless two-tone colour combinations; the leathers are rolled on wands with handles from Rolls-Royce’s famous umbrellas, while the veneers are shaped like the cross-section of an aerofoil, recalling The Hon Charles Rolls’ aviation exploits. This sensory-inspired room helps clients to envisage their dream commission coming to life.

The remarkable transformation of the Sunningdale showroom is a further sign of the dealership’s commitment to excellence which was recognised in two recent prestigious awards. In 2020, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Sunningdale was honoured to receive the title of ‘Global Bespoke Dealer of the Year’ and, for the past three years, ‘Regional Provenance Dealership of the Year’, both recognising its unwavering commitment to the Rolls-Royce brand and delivering personalised experiences to its cherished clients.

The showroom features the latest model range, each model enjoys its own dedicated space, framed, and is presented according to its distinctive personality and characteristics.

Phantom, Cullinan, Ghost and the latest addition to the Rolls-Royce family, the all-electric Spectre are showcased in the showroom, along with a large selection of Provenance Rolls-Royce’s. Provenance motor cars are previously owned Rolls-Royce models meticulously refurbished to the highest standards. Spanning all models and encompassing often rare styles, each Provenance motor car has a rich history – from its inception at the hands of master technicians, to its first intrepid owner

exploring boundless opportunity from within.

“After extensive redesign and redevelopment, I am delighted to announce that Rolls-Royce Sunningdale has now re-opened its doors. During the last 18 months the highly dedicated, professional, and experienced team temporarily relocated to their aftersales facility, where they continued to offer our esteemed clients their expertise and a hyper-personalised client experience characterised by luxurious encounters.

“The reopening of the Sunningdale dealership, the showroom nearest to the Home of the RollsRoyce in West Sussex, is a great moment for us. This new space, with its wealth of innovative digital technologies and elegant, luxurious design, is the perfect embodiment of the brand. It really captures the essence of the marque and brings our visual identity to life, reaffirming our position as a leading House of Luxury, distinct from an automotive manufacturer.”

Boris Weletzky, Regional Director, United Kingdom, Europe, and Central Asia

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Sunningdale believe the Rolls-Royce experience is an exhilarating and personal journey and the highly experienced team are dedicated to ensuring each and every visitor to the showroom receives a first-class experience.

“Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Sunningdale are proud to be back in their coveted location within the heart of Berkshire. We invite our local community to visit our newly refurbished showroom where we can share the features of the premises and the immersive experience of our incredible brand. Kew Gardens announces new Spring festival to awaken the senses

Kew Gardens is delighted to announce a new festival, Sounds of Blossom: Awaken your senses. The first ever spring festival at Kew Gardens will immerse visitors in the spectacular beauty of the season, offering a multisensory experience in one of London’s most iconic living landscapes. HORSEMAN’S SUNDAY

April 14, 2pm-3pm

Join a community gathering on St Martha’s Hill with an optional short service by Vicar Oakden of St Martha’s Church.

Hosted by the Surrey Hills National Landscape, this event gives local horse riders the opportunity to ride their mounts to St Martha’s Church, where there will be an optional blessing of the horses promptly at 2pm. Most riders like to be smartly dressed, and this makes for a perfect picture up on the hill. A diverse array of riders, horses and ponies take part, with the treat of enjoying the perfect view atop St Martha’s Hill.

Walkers and dogs on leads are welcome to attend. The event is FREE but if you are a rider, please register your details so we know how many people with their horses will be attending. If you are spectating on foot, you do not need to book a ticket.

There will be a collection on the day for St Martha’s Church and the Surrey Hills Society who

deliver important conservation and access projects for people and nature.

Parking and arrival

Travel and parking to the event is the responsibility of the attendees. However, for those using horse transport, and seeking a good hack in conjunction with the service, we recommend the Roman Temple Car Park on Farley Green GU5 9ER.

The service is short, so that horses don’t become restless. Riders must find their own way to St Martha’s Church, using the network of bridleways that criss-cross this section of the Surrey Hills.

All pedestrians, spectators, with dogs on leads will be guided to view from inside the cemetery walls, from where the service will be conducted.

There will be a welcome, a prayer, and a poem, before the vicar visits each horse and rider in turn, to give the blessing.

There is no fee but there will be a collection taken at the event, which riders will be encouraged to support; at the close, participating riders will receive a rosette, before dispersing.

This event may be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

Easter is coming

Easter is coming, and so are the Easter Eggs! Which one will you choose this year? We went along to visit Chris Bachmann at his multi award winning Weybridge Patisserie in the search of the perfect egg. We asked him, “What makes a Bachmanns Egg so special?”

“All our Easter Eggs and Bunnies are handmade with love on the premises. There are a few reasons why I think that our Easter products are the best in the UK. First, we use one of the finest couvertures in the world, sourced from a small manufacturer in Switzerland. It not only eats well on its own, but marries perfectly with other flavours. Not only is the chocolate perfectly tempered and therefore beautifully shiny, but unlike factory made products, the chocolate is poured into the moulds, allowed to set, and then another molten layer of chocolate is added. When this layer sets, it creates a tension or fault line between the layers, which improves the “snap” of the chocolate when eaten. Last, we also hand sculpt our eggs, adding a final exterior textured layer, and by adding chocolate flowers and hand made buttons, each egg becomes an individual work of chocolate art. It is the repeated lamination that makes the eggs break up delicately before melting in the mouth, and that is what truly sets them apart. However, this takes a lot of skill, and we have a great team here under Wayne Harris our head Chef, and our choclatier Dan Ellis.

Filled with either our legendary fresh cream truffles, or packed and encrusted with Crunchy Almond Rochers (baton almonds, macerated in cointreau, toasted with icing sugar over a hot flame, and mixed with melted chocolate and cocoa butter) our Eggs make an exquisite and unique gift for that special someone. We only make and stock our eggs for the three weeks between Mothers Day and Easter- that way we can pack them so that the products are super fresh and tasting their best- you know they haven’t been sitting around on a shelf in a warehouse for months and months.

“In fact, a couple of Easters ago, one lucky lady opened her Bachmanns egg to find a diamond and platinum engagement nestling inside. Bachmanns were asked to pack the ring in its box into a truffle filled 800g dark chocolate egg so the suitor could propose in style on Easter day.

“I must admit, I was quite relieved to get the ring and the egg back to the owner- it was a gorgeous piece of jewellery and I imagine it was extremely expensive. THE ESTATES AT PANGKOR LAUT RESORT

This exotic private island retreat offers impeccable service, pristine beaches and sumptuous dining all set against a backdrop of ancient tropical rainforest. Concealed on the northern part of the island, The Estates at Pangkor Laut Resort offer the ultimate in privacy, space and exclusivity. Perfect for families, larger groups or honeymooners, The Estates are a hidden gem nestled on the hillside with each one comprised of several buildings connected by paved walkways and bridges. Drawing inspiration from a slew of traditions and influences – from vernacular architecture of the Malay Archipelago, to British colonial verandahs, to Geoffrey Bawa’s sustainable architecture – with the result that the buildings in The Estates have their own distinct identity. While each estate is different, one might feature a whimsical giant chessboard while another an outdoor hot spa instead, all are luxuriously appointed featuring spacious bedrooms, separate living and dining pavilions, plenty of outdoor space and a large private pool.

Every Estate on Pangkor Laut is designed to be complete unto itself. Honouring a proud tradition of service, Pangkor Laut Resort’s legendary hospitality and VIP service starts even before

guests put a foot on the island. In preparation for their arrival, The Estates Manager finds out each guest’s preferences, likes, dislikes and special requests.

Once at The Estate, its level of service is truly in a class of its own. Butlers on hand to organise everything from a spa treatment on the Estate to a sunset cruise around the island and a personal chef ready to curate menus and cater to all dietary needs, residents may request anything and enjoy life to the fullest without ever stepping out of an Estate’s acreage.

However, should you decide to explore the rest of the island, a private chauffeur-driven car is available, to take you wherever you wish to go. Like The Estates, all aspects of Pangkor Laut Resort are designed to be in harmony with the environment, optimising the bounty of the rain forest, the geology and the seas surrounding it.

Various dining outlets are carefully placed throughout the island, curved around stunning bays, blending in with the verdant foliage or built against rock outcrops. Each offers a different culinary adventure in their respective cuisines, yet all share the same commitment to freshness and 100% natural ingredients, their chefs knowing where to source the choicest cuts and fightingfresh produce.

Whilst many spas in other resorts are part of an annexe, or have a wing set aside for that purpose, Spa Village Pangkor Laut, which inhabits its own bay and spans four acres, was designed to be a destination in its own right. Entirely dedicated to the spa experience, its treatments are inspired by the healing cultures of the region.

If you like the look of this resort, speak to one of Trailfinders’ travel experts today and plan it in to your next Malaysian adventure.

50 MARCH FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY [ NEWS ]

Watch out for these hygiene risks, experts warn. By Katie Wright.

MAKE-UP MAKEOVER

ATikTok video showing a beauty influencer cutting open a brand new make-up sponge to reveal spots of mould has gone viral, racking up more than 18m views.

Beauty influencer Kaitlyn Son, aka mycorneroftheuniverse, sliced the bright-pink teardrop-shaped blender into three pieces and found there was black mould speckled throughout.

Viewers were horrified that even an unused sponge could be so dirty, with many commenting under the video saying they’ve had their blenders for years and wondering if it’s time to get a new one.

Unfortunately, a mouldy beauty sponge isn’t the only health risk that could be hiding in your make-up bag.

We asked medical experts to explain everything you need to know about keeping your cosmetics –and your face – clean…

EYE MAKE-UP

“Eye make-up is probably the most important part of your make-up bag to maintain good hygiene, due to the delicate tissues around the eyes making it easier for pathogens to cause infections and acting as a direct entry point,” says Dr Hana Patel, GP and women’s health specialist at Superdrug Online Doctor.

Liquid products such as mascara and eyeliner tend to be more of a problem than things like eyeshadow.

“Mascara and eyeliner tubes create a dark and moist environment, which is conducive to the growth of bacteria and harmful microorganisms,”

Patel says.

“To minimise these risks, it is recommended to replace these products every three to six months, and avoid pumping the wand, as this introduces air and can lead to contamination.”

And never share eye make-up products: “There is a much higher chance of transmitting infections from one person to another. If you notice any signs of irritation, redness, or itching, discontinue use immediately.”

BASE PRODUCTS

“Not practising good hygiene with foundation, powders, bronzers and blushes can result in skin irritation and acne through transferred bacteria entering and clogging your pores,” says Patel.

In addition, make-up brushes or blenders used to apply base products can be a magnet for bacteria.

“Brushes collect all sorts of undesirable debris, including your make-up product, dirt and oil,” says Dr Miriam Adebibe, aesthetic doctor and founder of Dr Miriam A Skin Clinic.

“Liquid products such as mascara and eyeliner tend to be more of a problem than things like eyeshadow”
52 MARCH 2024
FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY

“This is a great breeding ground for bacteria and viruses, which can cause acne breakouts, skin irritation, and introduce infection where the skin barrier has broken down for any reason.”

Dr Simon Theobalds, GP at Pall Mall Medical recommends washing your make-up brushes at least once a week: “You can use a gentle, antibacterial soap or a specialised brush cleanser for this purpose. It’s vital to ensure that your brushes and beauty blenders dry completely between uses, as damp tools create a breeding ground for bacteria.”

After allowing your tools to air-dry thoroughly, store them in a clean and dry environment, he continues: “Avoid leaving them in humid areas, as moisture encourages bacterial growth. Consider using breathable containers or brush holders.”

Whether you use a blender, a brush or your fingers to apply products, Theobalds says: “Always wash your hands before applying make-up to prevent transferring dirt and bacteria onto your face and make-up tools.”

LIPSTICK AND GLOSS

Swiping lipstick or balm directly from the bullet onto your lips may be the most convenient application method, but it’s not the most hygienic.

“It’s best to use clean lip brushes or disposable applicators instead of applying directly from the product packaging – this prevents the transfer of bacteria from your lips back into the product,” Theobalds says.

Adebibe agrees: “Applying lip balm with your finger can transfer dirt and bacteria into your balm and onto your lips. Make sure to wash your hands before applying to avoid this.”

Never share lip products, Theobalds warns: “Especially with individuals with compromised immune systems, as this increases the risk of spreading infections,” such as herpes simplex,

which can cause cold sores.

“It’s also important to discard any lip products that have changed in texture, smell, or colour.”

Don’t forget to include lip brushes when doing your weekly wash, he adds: “Use a mild, antibacterial soap or brush cleanser. Make sure your brushes are thoroughly dry before using them to prevent the growth of bacteria.”

MAKE-UP BAG

“Make-up bags will naturally accumulate bacteria over time, especially if make-up products spill or if brushes and applicators are not cleaned regularly,” Patel says.

“Bacterial growth in the bag increases the risk of skin infections and irritations when using the stored products.”

Nasties can transfer from one product to another, and if you store your make-up bag in the humid environment of a bathroom it can promote bacterial growth.

“To address this concern, it is advisable to frequently clean both the inside and outside of your make-up bag using a mild disinfectant or wipes,” Patel says.

“Use separate compartments within the bag for different types of products to prevent crosscontamination. Opt for make-up bags made of washable materials that can be easily cleaned or wiped down.”

TA revolution in skin rejuvenation

DERMAPEN MICRONEEDLING WITH EXOSOMES

At The Cosmetic Doctors Company

he derma roller micro-needling device was first developed almost 20 years ago and remains a popular form of skin rejuvenation for both clinic and home use.

Dermapen is a significant improvement on traditional needling by roller. Dermapen is an electronic, oscillating device with a disposable sterile cartridge of needles at the tip that penetrate vertically as it glides over your skin. This results in super-fine microchannels and

“This ability to deliver anti-ageing products, such as exosomes and growth factors deeping into the skin is now regarded as the major benefit of micro-needling. We believe that the combination of

exosomes

with Dermapen is a real advance in skin anti-ageing medicine”

much less unnecessary trauma to the skin resulting in a faster recovery. Active serums applied to the skin during micro-needling will penetrate via these microchannels into the deeper layers of skin producing significant improvements compared with conventional topical application. At the Cosmetic Doctors Company we now use a combination of Exosomes and growth factors in conjunction with Dermapen.

Exosomes are microscopic droplets that are naturally produced by our cells. They are cellular messengers containing growth factors, proteins, and mRNA playing a role in communication

“Exosomes are believed to be significantly more powerful than retinol, the current gold standard in skin anti-ageing”

between cells. These trigger cellular repair and rejuvenation.

We recommend two treatments 4 ~ 6 weeks apart for maximum benefit.

The results are not instant; this is about regeneration and longevity.

Can Exercise help Arthritis?

It’s known that exercise is beneficial for our health, but for people with painful joints it could feel like exercising is not possible. Arthritis is a common condition that causes inflammation and pain in the joints. In the UK alone, it is thought more than 10 million people have arthritis or other, similar conditions. While there is no cure for arthritis there are a number of treatments and lifestyle changes that can help ease symptoms.

Dr John Outhwaite, Rheumatologist at King Edward VII’s Hospital, explains how not exercising is actually worse for the joints.

“If you suffer with the pain and discomfort of arthritis, then exercise may be far from your mind. However, regular exercise can help arthritis sufferers to increase strength and flexibility, improve range of movement and mobility of joints and reduce stiffness. Being physically active can also preserve the density of your bones. All these factors can help to reduce the amount of pain you experience and may help to prevent your discomfort from getting worse.

It’s easy to become locked in the ‘deconditioning cycle’ if you have arthritis. This cycle starts with painful joints, which leads to being less active. This then means that the muscles become weaker, leading to unstable joints and more joint pain when you do move, completing the cycle.”

Dr Outhwaite advises that Arthritis sufferers should work out for 30 minutes, at least five times a week. It’s better to choose low impact exercise that puts less pressure on the joints such as walking, swimming and cycling. But you can still push yourself whilst doing these exercises if you wish to, as having arthritis doesn’t mean that you can’t carry out low impact exercises vigorously – you just need to be careful to stay within your limits. Strengthening exercises such as Pilates and yoga are also important to help strengthen your muscles and support your joints. If you’re experiencing a flare up and your joints feel inflamed, hot and swollen, avoid strengthening exercise until your flare up has passed.

CHOCOLATE-BROWN TREND

This chic shade is a staple you can rely on, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

Call it espresso, café au lait or cortado, when it comes to getting a caffeine fix in the fashion world, chocolate brown is where it’s at.

Super versatile, add a dash of creamy beige or wear it straight up… brown is an earthy, warming tone that doesn’t shout and stays true to form in its classic style.

Far from frothy and so much more than a safe neutral, this designers’ favourite has re-emerged as a standout item for its warmth and bankability –brown is universal and suits everyone!

Here’s what’s hot on the high street…

THE JAUNTY JACKET

Whether you go aviator, biker or bomber, a jacket will be your hardest working standout piece this season. Hitting that sweet spot between a jacket with attitude and timeless elegance, you’ll get even more mileage from this must-have by pairing it with a diaphanous dress when the spring collections drop.

THE TROPHY TOP

It’s no secret the contrast of brown against black is never bland, with that luxe look lending newness to anything you wear it with. Especially when you look forward to wearing a silky ruffle blouse, sexy sheer shirt or sequin T, the beauty of brown is that it makes everything look bang up to date.

THE TRENDY TROUSERS

Looking to break boundaries? Why wear black leather leggings or trousers when you can nail the quiet luxury trend in the same frame… top your brown bottoms with rich earthy tones or cosy caramel knit to look effortlessly cool.

THE DAPPER DRESS

Head-to-toe is the way to go for a polished, sophisticated look. Dresses and two-pieces in rich chocolates and mocha, belted and accessorised with tonal hues, a maxi bag or clutch (both trending for S/S 24) looks chic and effortless. Furthermore, designers are playing with texture, such as ribbed wool with leather, faux fur embellishment and sweater dresses made from sweatshirt fleece for a contemporary twist on this beloved basic.

Seeing a variety of acute and chronic hand problems, hand pain, or hand deformities no matter what the cause, can be painful and frustrating, especially when it interferes with daily activities such as work, caring for your children and family, driving and exercise. HAIR TRENDS THAT WILL DOMINATE IN 2024 from the Nineties bob to the ‘mixie’ cut

Thinking about revamping your look in the New Year? A chic haircut or colour refresh can make all the difference, whether it’s a dramatic transformation or a subtle tweak to your usual style.

If you’re looking for inspiration, a host of stylish celebrities and influencers are ahead of the curve, and hairdressers say the cool cuts and sumptuous shades they’ve been rocking recently will be everywhere next year.

We asked hair industry experts to talk through their predictions for the hottest hair trends of 2024…

THE NINETIES BOB

Last year, Hailey Bieber’s wavy bob inspired many a haircut, and now we’re seeing variations on the short, sharp chop.

“Harking back to the Nineties is the blunt bob that is continuously evolving, now more so into a chin-length style,” says celebrity hair stylist Paul Edmonds. He recommends trying the style with a soft fringe: “It’s all about shorter bangs and keeping the outside edges long. The cut-through fringe with the centre being shorter than the edges provides flexibility.”

GOLDEN BLONDES

“Warm golden tones are replacing the long-standing preference for ashy blondes and cool brunettes, with a shift towards gold and honey

Hair stylist Paul Edmonds Robbie Purves, hair stylist and Ffør ambassador

hues,” says celebrity hairdresser Edward James.

Inspired by celebrities like Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Blake Lively, the best way to achieve multi-tonal golden hues is with balayage: “For darker blondes and mid-to-dark brunettes, it creates depth and will reflect more light, making your hair look incredibly glossy.”

THE KITTY CUT

We’ve had the wolf, the octopus and the jellyfish –the next animal-inspired, layered ‘do that will be all over your social media feeds is the kitty cut.

“The kitty cut is longer than a bob with hair falling between the shoulders and collarbone,” explains hair stylist Adem Oygur, founder of Adem salon.

“Cut with subtle ascending layers throughout, it’s face-framing without being too short or choppy.”

The great thing about this mid-length style is that it can be tailored to every hair type and face shape: “Around the face, the layers can begin from the cheekbones or jawline – it is versatile, with many styles such as curled, beachy waves, shaggy or straight.”

GLASS HAIR

“I love that we’re moving into a more glamorous era,” says Charlotte Reid, celebrity hair and makeup artist and Bristows ambassador.

But that doesn’t mean complicated updo’s. On the contrary, she’s noticing a trend towards pokerstraight, ultra glossy locks worn long and loose.

“For premieres and red carpets we’ll be seeing more Nineties, glass-straight hair – that is all I’m being asked to do at the moment,” Reid says.

Case in point? British model Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley swapped her usual glam waves for super-straight tresses at the Fashion Awards 2023 in December.

RED HOT HUES

Countless celebrities jumped on the copper bandwagon in 2023, and now the red trend is hotting up.

“The natural development of this trend is into the brighter and less ‘natural-looking’ red tones,” says hair stylist and trend forecaster Tom Smith.

“Glossy, intense, deep and bright, true reds will bring a fiery nature into 2024 for those wanting to stand out from the crowd. We’ve been seeing

this already on tastemakers such as Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion.”

Robbie Purves, hair stylist and Ffør ambassador, agrees that rich reds will rule next year: “Cowboy copper is the latest trend to hit salon chairs, characterised by its versatile and warm leathery tones. I predict that clients are going to opt for deeper red tones, moving towards plum red and even violet hues.”

Scarlet shades are notorious for fading fast, so if you’re going down the red route, you’ll need to stock up on a pigment-packed product to keep it looking vibrant.

Smith says: “Thankfully, simply using a redtoned conditioner when washing one’s hair is enough to keep the hair healthy and glowing hot red. My go-to is the Evo Fabuloso Colour Boosting Conditioner, £26.50.”

THE ‘MIXIE’ CUT

Pioneered by the likes of Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart and British actor Emma Corrin (who rocked the look on the Miu Miu catwalk), the choppy, edgy ‘mixie’ cut is short at the front and longer at the back, and has been gaining traction recently.

“A mix of pixie cut and mullet, this trend is perfect for those who want a daring transformation,” says Tasha, senior stylist at Paul Edmonds.

“The mixie makes a bold statement without sacrificing a touch of femininity, creating a fashion-forward look that exudes confidence and a hint of rebellion.”

HOW TO GET THE ‘QUIET LUXURY’ LOOK F

ads come and go, but when is a trend not a trend?

“The ‘quiet luxury’ anti-trend is an understated approach to dressing that can be perfected by styling timeless, low-key staples with minimalistic designs,” says Sheila McKain, chief product officer at Hush.

Indeed, when celebrating classic tailoring, ‘quiet luxury’ proves a little goes a long way.

Think pared-down pieces that don’t shout ‘look at me,’ but have a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that makes you look effortlessly chic and rich – without a logo or label in sight.

To master this aesthetic, McKain says you don’t have to spend thousands on high-end designer pieces: “It’s more about choosing great quality and thoughtful design – selecting core items you can use to create a base is key.”

She says trophy pieces include a classic blazer, wide-leg trousers or straight-leg jeans and a crisp, white shirt. “When styled together, each of these pieces can create a multitude of everyday looks,” suggests McKain.

To ensure you get the most wear out of each item, she says to keep colours neutral and stay within a palette of brown, beige, black and white.

As far as accessories go, she says jewellery should be kept minimal with something as simple as a small hoop earring.

If this sounds a little too safe, a gold bangle or carefully selected thin gold necklace chains (styled effortlessly) will luxe up your look to the desired effect.

As Sian Ryan, director of design at River Island, puts it: “Quiet luxury is essentially a wardrobe of styling essentials, where items can be worn in a multitude of ways and span many seasons –ensuring customers get a true sense of value for money.”

HERE’S HOW TO GET THE LOOK…

The white shirt

“My favourite outfit at the minute is a white shirt teamed with a straight-leg jean and pointed-toe kitten heel,” says Ryan. “When I wear this, I feel put together, yet effortless. I like to think of it

as ‘easy elegance’.” Whether you wear your crisp, white shirt open with a sleeveless white vest underneath, or buttoned up nonchalantly, go a size larger to make it look more expensive. Longer in the sleeve, wider on the shoulder and a little more length gives it that luxurious, designer feel.

Neutral knits

“Neutral knitwear in super-soft luxury yarns are perfect for when the days turn cooler,” says Karen Peacock, Albaray’s co-founder and chief creative officer. “A chic colour palette that goes with everything helps create multiple ways to wear.” Remember, fabrics play a leading role, so look for soft-to-the-touch in a smooth yarn for a cashmere cheat – or some texture for your rib crib-sheet.

Tailored jacket

“An elevated blazer in a heritage check looks ideal styled with a classic jean and white T-shirt combination,” suggests Peacock. “A simple look which creates an easy, pared-back luxe look.”

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY
66 MARCH 2024 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY

Straight-leg jeans

Whether you go for a washed look or mid-wash blue, a looser fit is encouraged to make them look premium. And remember, no obvious branding on the bum or rips on knees. Plus, if you can comfortably pose with hand-in-pocket, you’re in the inner circle for classy, desirable denim.

Camel coat

Looking ahead and transitioning into Autumn, a timeless camel coat always looks effortlessly chic. Naturally, the colour plays a part. Camel isn’t practical, it shows every mark and therein lies the beauty of it – you’re wealthy enough to fork out for dry cleaning bills. “A camel coat offers versatility and a sense of polish to any outfit,” notes Peacock. A welcome addition to any wardrobe, she says a masculine silhouette and slight oversized fit allows for multiple layering opportunities… we’re thinking an ivory sweater tied around the shoulders, just so.

Gold jewellery

“From understated hoops to simple chains, the quiet luxury trend is about choosing the right pieces, and keeping it simple, timeless and refined,” says Sally Arkley-Wade, head of product and trading at H Samuel. She says to focus on quality materials and subtle details to create elegant and sophisticated looks. “Team your plain white top, those everyday jeans or timeless shirt with affordable must-haves,” suggests Arkley-Wade. “Choose from 9ct

gold chains, stack up your ear with 9ct gold hoops, or invest in the finer details – whatever your style, you will find something to suit your budget.” And select pieces which can be worn with a variety of outfits, she adds. “Mix and match delicate necklaces, stack thin rings, or layer bracelets to add depth and interest to your overall style.”

THE PERIOD IRONMONGER

Kitchen transformations are a key part of home improvement and renovation.

Choosing the right cabinet colour and hardware can be daunting and with an increase in open plan kitchen and family spaces it has never been more important.

“We are seeing an increased demand for more modern, but timeless designs, even in period homes. Moving away from simple functionality and looking to create a more unified space between the cooking, eating and living spaces in the home has become key” Jayne explains.

Richard goes on to say “Even though modern, contemporary designs are on trend at the moment, brass is definitely back! Over the past 2 – 3 years we have seen an increase in the demand for the warmer tone of polished or brushed brass, as well as the darker aged bronze finishes too.”

Transforming a kitchen can be fairly straightforward; changing the paint colour and cabinet fittings can rejuvenate a tired space. Or you may be going for a completely new kitchen, or even renovating your primary living space. Whichever it is The Period Ironmonger can help.

Working with some of the leading British and international manufacturers of brass and bronze hardware they will help you to find cabinet knobs, pulls and handles that will work with your chosen design and colour scheme.

Contact Richard or Jayne to discuss your kitchen transformation, or for more information and advice.

2024 TREND BROWN BATHROOMS

There are moments when we find we’re getting asked, a lot, for a certain style or tile or a particular look. Most recently it was terrazzo (ideally timed as we just launched a new terrazzo collection – the very dreamy, Rialto terrazzo tiles) but right now, it’s all about brown bathrooms. The Ca’ Pietra community is going crazy for them in all their warmth and woody glory, so if you want a slice of the chocolate-y bathroom pie, our Head of Creative, Grazzie Wilson gives you five of the ways to cut into the trend.

SOFTLY DOES IT WITH TAUPE AND BEIGE

Like every colour, brown is a sliding scale. From the 80% cocoa depths of walnut brown to the mellow neutrals of taupe, beige and putty. If you’re into lighter tones then create yourself a brown bathroom that blends the lot – all eyes on this Enki limestone bathroom as a lesson in how it’s done. Using the large format rectangle with ribbons of brown tones

“A tile formation that is a forever trend, parquet walls and parquet tiled floors are always a winner”
78 MARCH 2024 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

on the floor and then adding visual texture with the herringbone version in the shower enclosure, you’ve immediately got a soft brown setting with whispers of deeper brown in the mix. Layer in a few accent pieces, like this tan leather chair, a woven jute bathroom rug, a terracotta brown pot or two, and a statement washstand (we went for black marble but a brown marble or timber version would’ve allowed for yet more brown if you fancied) and you have yourself a through-and-through brown bathroom to swoon over.

WAYS WITH WOOD

Proof that wood isn’t just a material but a colour too, wooden-style tiles pave the wave to a bathroom that’s at one with nature. Starting with the floor, a wood effect bathroom floor can feel comforting and charming in a period property or style it differently and place it in a modern setting and you can create a blonde wood Scandi bathroom that transports you to Stockholm with every shower. Or use wood effect porcelain, like

“Wooden-style tiles pave the wave to a bathroom that’s at one with nature”

our Beach Hut tiles up your walls as well as the floor to really encase the bathroom in the warmth that shades of brown bring. What’s great about wood effect tiles is that you can add in a touch of black (in the form of brassware or your shower screen) and you’ll soon see that wooden walls can give rise to a moody, industrial look just as impressively.

BROWN, BUT MAKE IT PRETTY

Love the idea of a brown bathroom but wondering if it will feel too earthy in situ? There are plenty of ways to style a brown bathroom to soften things and to prettify the space but one of the best ways is to choose a brown tile that adds immediate softness thanks to its shape. Take a look at our Marlborough terracotta bathroom tiles, in particular in our room-softening Arabesque shape. You can also look at our Kashmir collection for inspiration on how to add brown in a “softly does it” kind of way too.

BROWN PARQUET PERFECTION

A tile formation that is a forever trend, parquet walls and parquet tiled floors are always a winner. Some of our favourite brown bathrooms of all feature brown parquet tiles whether it’s the speckled finish of our Pottery tiles that give rise to a multi-tonal brown palette on bathroom walls, the rich terracotta brown tones of our Marlborough terracotta on a bathroom floor, or have fun with our Petite collection.. The finishing touch? Cosy, underfloor heating, a burnishing copper bathtub (they’re sort of brown after all) and a cocooning brown paint for walls and your dream brown bathroom is complete.

BROWN SCHEMES PACKED WITH PERSONALITY

Brown tiles add character and charm to any bathroom, whether you’re decorating a tiny downstairs loo or have a whopping family bathroom. But, when it comes to brown, it doesn’t have to mean playing it safe. In fact, we think this colour scheme works just as well when you pack it with personality as it does when you colour drench the room in the same tile. Enter our Rialto terrazzo tiles in Santa Croce which we’ve teamed with a stripe design, adding heaps of personality into this bathroom.

MAKE A SPLASH with the latest bathroom trends for 2024

Bathroom design schemes are typically built to last, but that doesn’t mean that the space can’t be stylish –it’s possible to create a showstopping showering space no matter the theme.

Here, Ashley Cooper, marketing director at Triton Showers, outlines the top bathroom trends to accentuate your shower space as we head into the new year:

“We’ve seen a lot of changes to interior design over the last year and this won’t be slowing down as we move into the new year. The key focus for 2024 trends is creating a refreshed bathroom space with a focus on bold colours, patterns and the latest technology.

MINIMALISTIC STYLINGS

“The minimalist bathroom has undeniably been one of the most popular trends in recent years, and it doesn’t show any signs of backing down in 2024. This style is easy to live with thanks to its versatility and ability to create calmness and tranquillity while providing that spa-at-home look.

“Avoid picking the purest whites as these can often make a space look clinical. Instead, opt for off-whites and surfaces with texture and finishes that mimic natural stone materials such as marble, concrete, and sandstone. The key is to keep the core colours neutral and play around with finishes and shapes.

“Black fixtures and fittings partner perfectly with these elements and help tie the look together, whilst adding contrast. Alternatively, introduce black into the scheme through a rimmed glass or crittall-style shower screen, mirrors, storage solutions and wall lights. Or if you’re feeling bold opt for a black electric shower unit as a focal point, combining contemporary looks with an efficient way to heat and use water – saving you money.

COTTAGECORE

“Leaning into wholesome simplicity, Cottagecore is a trend that first entered the interiors world a few years ago but is set to take off in bathroom spaces as we head into next year. The trend celebrates

cosy and vintage elements, promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being.

“Start by creating the perfect colour palette with soft, pastel hues, such as pale pinks and yellows and muted blues. Pair this base with floral prints in the form of wallpaper or artwork for a feminine, romantic feel.

“Moving onto the smaller details, style with vintage furniture and décor such as wicker baskets for storage and patterned towels, you can even display masonry jars on open shelving to fill with toiletries. Consider retro lighting fixtures, chandeliers and wall sconces to add a cosy feel –warm lit bulbs will enhance this feeling. Pull the design together with rustic flooring or tiles – wood or stone finishes work well with this trend, but you can opt for metro tiles to add an edge.

“Finish the look with simple silver or chrome brassware, along with a vintage-look shower that will perfectly complement the wider scheme. To create a more homely look, add personal touches such as plates and framed pictures to the walls, as this will help bring the look together.

EARTHY TONES

“Taking things back to their roots, this trend incorporates tones that reflect the natural world

84 MARCH 2024 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
RIPPLES BEACONSFIELD, 25 MAYFLOWER WAY, BEACONSFIELD, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, HP9 1UG | 01494 927 411 RIPPLES WOKINGHAM, 3 ROSE STREET, WOKINGHAM, BERKSHIRE, RG40 1XS | 0118 214 8887

and brings a sense of serenity into your bathroom space. You can incorporate the look into a variety of designs thanks to its neutral nature, from modern and minimalist to traditional and rustic. It’s a truly versatile choice that creates timeless appeal.

“Earth-inspired hues have a natural appeal in the bathroom as they create an inviting and serene atmosphere while providing a neutral colour base that avoids being one-dimensional. Don’t shy away from experimenting with textures and materials with this trend, as it will help add interest.

“Depending on personal preference you can work with either a warm or cool palette to achieve an earthy look. Consider traditional warm colours like terracotta and hickory or delve to the other end of the colour wheel with muted tones like sage green, cashmere, taupe and stone grey.

“There’s so much flexibility with how you can welcome these natural tones into your bathroom, earthy cabinetry is a great option, or accessories can provide a solution that is easy to rework if you fancy a change at a later date. Wicker and rattan furniture, wood surfaces and greenery are great ways to build the scheme. Or keep the look contemporary and sleek by opting for an earthy colour across walls, shelving and sink areas for a monochromatic, minimalistic finish.

DOPAMINE COLOURS

“Bathrooms in 2024 will not be confined to clinical white tiles, instead you’ll see designs that boast confidence and are decorated in vibrant tones. Primary colours are back, and here to brighten your day.

“If you want a bathroom that instantly puts a smile on your face, then injecting bold colours into your design is guaranteed to make you feel cheery no matter the time of day. This scheme is perfect for a family bathroom and will make shower time fun for all.

“Funky tile layouts, pops of colour, geometric towels and rainbow accessories create a technicoloured bathroom delight. If you’re feeling bold, introduce murals to your walls, such as a door lip in a bright hue – adding this wave design will test the creative boundaries of the bathroom.

“This scheme isn’t for the faint-hearted. If you’re feeling cautious, start with a clean base of white walls and a matte white shower, then go wild with accessories, which can easily be refreshed should you wish.”

BIOPHILIC DESIGN

“With hybrid working very much an integrated part of everyday life, many may find themselves spending increasingly more time inside their homes. So, it comes as no surprise that there will be a continued focus on bringing the outside in over the next year.

“Adding a touch of nature to your bathroom design can provide a feeling of calm, acting as a sanctuary and providing a space for waking yourself up in the morning and winding down at the end of the day. Drawing inspiration from the outdoors, this trend incorporates organic wood features complemented by muted, natural hues and greenery to create a space that exudes serenity.

“Opt for wood or stone look wall panels or flooring, partnered with an organic palette of greens, blues and browns for a touch of the natural world. Plants are of course a must, not only do they fit the scheme but they can also help make the space feel fresh and improve air quality within your bathroom. Consider using open shelving to store towels and toiletries to create a more open and organic feel in your bathroom.

“Many underestimate the effect that lighting can have in a bathroom. When creating a biophilic design, try to maximise natural light with sheer or minimal window dressings – not only will this help to create an open, inviting space flooded with natural light, but also provide a view of the outdoors.

Lindi Reynolds & Co.

This Fernshaw Mansions Pied-a-terre, set within a Victorian Mansion block in the heart of Chelsea, London, was lovingly renovated and restored for a family of four. It had been remodelled a few times over the years, with each new owner adding a layer of their own; resulting in a hodgepodge collection of rooms and spaces. Lindi Reynolds & Co restored it sympathetically, taking it right back to its bones and then with remedial work to all walls, and by reclaiming original ceiling heights and features, re-instated the Victorian character of the home. This entailed a challenging electrical re-wire of the property, the copying of existing cornice and refitting of it where absent and some structural wall maintenance. Once a fresh canvass had been achieved the team at Lindi Reynolds and Co. furthered the design package, ensuring that all storage requirements and furniture placements would work sympathetically with the new layouts. Through a full renovation there wasn’t a single surface left unaltered by the team.

The clients brief was to restore the original character whilst bringing it up to date sympathetically; to achieve a haven of quiet yet inspired calm for a modern, progressive family. The primary design objective was to introduce a high degree of visual interest with colour, print, texture, scale and proportion. High value was placed on the importance of craftsmanship and finish. This enabled the designing and making of bespoke items of furniture, best seen in the dining room. Made to the highest standards in craftsmanship, the hope is that these exquisite furniture pieces will be treasured and loved by the

next generation.

To help establish a sense of tranquility, Belgian linen cloth was fitted to the reception rooms and passages. With its sound absorbing qualities, this product helps to achieve a calm space which is also rich and refined in character and soft on the eye.

One of the challenges was that the bedrooms were relatively small in footprint and passageways narrow. Through clever design and use of bespoke cabinetry and furniture, however, the spaces have been granted a greater sense of space and functionality.

Every step of the way, this award-winning architectural interior design company added value as they went, enabling a joyful, hassle free project experience from beginning to end.

Melville is a Victorian-inspired design that will inject period charm wherever it is used. Available in four colourways – blue, grey, red and white – they feature a striking geometric design that will create a stunning mosaic effect.

Spring Styling Tips

Keeping it real. That’s what we do. Real wood furniture made by real people for real life.

We’re a small British furniture manufacturer, handcrafting beautiful furniture in our workshop in the North East of England. We also have a retail website where we sell to customers from across the UK.

Our solid wood furniture makes a perfect impression. Every single piece is handmade-toorder by skilled craftspeople and designed to last a lifetime.

We only use sustainably sourced timbers for our furniture and work hard to reduce our wastage as well as use recycled packaging that can then itself be recycled.

Spring Styling Tips from Sophie at Funky Chunky Furniture: “Spring is a refreshing season, a season where nature feels like it’s hit the reboot button, and all around us, our parks, gardens and fields comes back to their glorious, colourful best.

With cheeky snowdrops the first to brave the cold mornings, followed swiftly by cheerful daffodils, buds on the trees, and the birds full of song.

“Shrug off the cosiness of Winter and bring that happy Spring vibe into your home with some simple changes to your everyday as well as your decor.

“Start by flinging windows wide, to let that fresh air in. Nothing heralds the end of winter more than seeing curtains fluttering in a gently breeze coming through an open window, hearing birds happily singing away outside.

“Update your window boxes and herb planters with early flowering plants like Pansies and Primroses.

“Add pops of colour to your rooms. Pop flowers in vases or jugs, or show your house plants some love with an updated plant pot cover. Place a colourful throw over the arm of the sofa, for those cooler evenings. If you love a seasonal wreath on your front door, or around your home, it’s time to update those too. Clean and put away the wintry ones and choose delightfully bright and fun ones to add to that Spring theme.

“And with Easter just around the corner, you can start to think about decorating your home for that too. An Easter tree makes a wonderful statement in your home. Place a few large branches into a jug and decorate with Easter ornaments. The perfect place for it is either in a now redundant hearth, or on a console table in a hallway.” funky-chunky-furniture.co.uk

Afternoon Tea Collection by Victoria

Perfect for Mother’s Day, the Wildlife in Spring and Afternoon Tea collections from award-winning British designer Victoria Eggs make for thoughtful gifts.

The delicately illustrated Wildlife in Spring collection highlights a nostalgic and hopeful view of this blossoming time of year. With the promise of new beginnings, the hedgerows are bursting with life, filled with birdsong and sweetly scented flowers attracting bees, butterflies and insects alike. A blackbird, sparrow and wren, some of Britain’s most well-known birds, can be found surrounded by budding blossoms, beautiful roses and elegant magnolia.

Born from Victoria’s desire to create a timeless floral design inspired by childhood memories of exploring hedgerows around the UK on family holidays and being taught by her young daughter to stop and smell the roses. Wildlife in Spring offers a relaxed view through lush foliage and gives dreamers a space to breathe and enjoy well deserved peace and quiet.

The collection includes two mugs, one with the word ‘mum’ inscribed on the inner rim, tea towel, apron, double oven glove, oven mitt, canvas bag, jugs, cosmetic bag, wash bag, notecards, cushion cover, pot grab, coaster, shortbread biscuits, and English breakfast tea.

The decadent Afternoon Tea collection was inspired by Victoria’s love of this quintessentially British ritual.

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” - Henry James

As with Victoria’s other collections, all of the products are hand-crafted right here in the UK. The fine bone china ceramics are made of the finest Cornish clay, and the textiles are printed onto unbleached 100% cotton using plant dyes that are environmentally friendly.

The collection includes a mug, tea cup and saucer, tea towel, bauble, apron, double oven glove, canvas bag, English breakfast tea, shortbread biscuits, and coasters.

DISCOVER THE MONOCHROME TREND

Out with the old in with the new - say goodbye to plain whites and hello to chic monochrome décor.

Find out how to nail this look with the help of our resident Interior Style Advisor Rebecca Snowden.

Monochrome décor is having a moment with over 20 million views on TikTok. It’s all about easy but luxe styling with simple neutrals and minimalist touches. Say goodbye to plain white and instead go for warmer off-white tones like cream, beige or taupe.

Monochrome’s popularity is also linked to the #softminimalism trend which is now at 24 million on TikTok views and counting. “Think of it as a sister trend as it takes the same light, calming colours of monochrome and adds comforting curved lines and natural materials,” Rebecca says. “After the year we’ve had it’s no surprise that we just want to relax and reset at home. This trend is about prioritising yourself - what’s soothing and inviting to you and to promote your own sense of wellbeing.”

“If you’re stuck choosing between both trends -

don’t worry, why not bring them together? Mixing both monochrome and soft minimalism allows us to craft spaces that not only look great but feel even better. Those off-white tones will warm up the room and textures like cotton, velvet and boucle are perfect for this look. Set the mood with soft lighting and bring in raw finishes and curves such as a clay vase or stoneware. Bringing monochrome and soft minimalism together is like a cosy hygge cocktail - served chilled with close friends and family.”

Trends heating up in 2024 ACCORDING TO UK RADIATORS

The UK’s top heating specialists, UK Radiators, might be experts at keeping the home cosy and warm, but they are also on hand to tell consumers what trends will be hot in 2024. And according to them, three will dominate the heating sector next year: Laid Back Luxe, Dark Colours and Raw Materials. Rob Nezard, Managing Director of UK Radiators, said: “The homes and interiors sector has seen a steady move towards embracing bold design choices and this is now extending to long-term fixtures and fittings including radiators. “Standard white radiators are slowly disappearing as more homeowners banish the bland and inject statement pieces. Radiators that stand up in form and function will reign.”

LAID BACK LUXE

Grey tones can impart a sense of sophistication and luxury and are ideal for pairing with more rugged interior choices, such as the industrialism movement. Grey, with its neutral and versatile nature, serves as an ideal backdrop to showcase the raw elements in industrial design. Rob said: “A muted palette not only complements raw textures such as exposed brick and metal, but it can bring a touch of calm and ensure the space is inviting.”

DARK COLOURS

Brooding, dark shades are set to take centre stage in this year. Rob said: “A black or anthracite

radiator will add depth and drama. Mount it to a grey wall or contrast it with white for a more contemporary look.”

CHOOSE RAW MATERIALS

Biophilia, where natural materials are embraced, has been a key trend for a number of years, but Rob believes we’ll start to see more raw materials incorporated in the home in 2024 - including metallic elements. Think faded metal, unvarnished hardwood and exposed pipework.

Rob said: “A raw metal column radiator complements this aesthetic perfectly, bringing a mechanical, vintage look and a whole lot of heat.” ukradiators.com
