urrey will be the first stop on the Shakespeare’s Globe’s International tour this Summer, with three performances taking place in the magical Crinkle-Crankle Garden at West Horsley Place on the 14th and 15th May. This will be the Globe’s first visit to West Horsley place, where a company of eight actors will bring to life A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It and The Tempest, three plays which explore the natural world and its great potential for abundance and transformation. As You Like It will be performed for free to an invited audience including local schools, charities and community groups.

Jazz is experiencing a renaissance across the UK and nowhere more so than in Guildford which is home to the thriving, community arts organisation, Guildford Jazz. Founded in 2011 by former IT consultant turned professional bass player, Marianne Windham, Guildford Jazz aims to bring the best UK national jazz artists to Guildford in a welcoming, basement jazz club like setting.

Volunteers from six Surrey groups, who dedicate their valuable time and experience to help individuals and communities across the county, have been nominated for the prestigious 2020 Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS). This is the equivalent of an MBE and is the highest national honour given to UK volunteers.

Gatton Park is the core 260 acres of the Gatton estate and is made up of lovingly restored gardens and parkland. There is something to see and do throughout the year from the stunning displays of snowdrops in the spring to autumn walks in the parkland. They offer a wide range of events and educational programmes for people of all ages and abilities.

New Silent Pool Rose Expression Gin S

ilent Pool Gin is distilled and bottled at a small distillery on the banks of the Silent Pool in Albury, near Guildford. It was created just five years ago but in that short time has gained a reputation as one of the finest handcrafted gins in the world.

It’s no wonder then that the distillery’s new Silent Pool Rose Expression Gin is creating such a buzz amongst gin connoisseurs as it’s the first variation on Silent Pool Gin since its original launch.

Rose Expression shares the Silent Pool Gin DNA in terms of its complexity and refreshingly individual character, however the core recipe has been reworked to create an intriguing new gin that is flavoured naturally by rose petals.

While the vast majority of rose gins on the market have infusions, or extracts or flavour compounds added post distillation, the expert team at the distillery were determined to create a delicious, colourless London Dry rose gin through distillation alone. They have achieved this thanks to meticulous research and a unique ‘tea’ infusion of rose petals.

In addition some of the original botanicals that give the classic gin its much loved flavour - pear, bergamot, cubeb and cardamom - have been amplified to complement the rose. Meanwhile fresh lemon peel replaces fresh orange and lime peel to perfect the blend of flavours.

From the subterranean crypt to the lofty heights of the Tower - and everything in between - the Cathedral is putting on various tours that will allow visitors to learn more about the building and its history.

The tunnel that extends along the length of the Cathedral will be open to the public as part of the Crypt Tour. Like a scene from Doctor Who, this underground passage takes you through the hidden workings of the Cathedral from east to west.

The Tower Tour offers visitors the chance to climb the Tower’s 249 steps for views across Surrey – all under the gaze of our 15 foot high gilded angel.

Head of Visitor Engagement and Events, Louise Musgrove, says ‘so many people on their first visit tell us that they’ve driven past on numerous occasions’. This is your chance to come in and enjoy what we have to offer, and to get your fix of awe and wonder as you enter the Cathedral’.

Seasons Café & Kitchen will be open for hot drinks, light bites and meals. The Cathedral shop sells a variety of unique greetings cards, gifts and souvenirs and is definitely worth a browse.

The Dean of Guildford, the Very Reverend Dianna Gwilliams, says ‘the Cathedral is open to all, for free, 365 days a year. This Open Day is about sharing that message more clearly, and welcoming people from across Surrey to enjoy this stunning building and all that takes place from here’.

Maserati’s newest incarnation of it’s SUV now offers even more O

riginally launched a couple of years ago, the Maserati Levante has now been reworked and engineered, assisted

by Ferrari, with the end goal of making it really stand head and shoulders above all other SUVs in this luxury bracket.

The Levante is instantly recognisable from a distance, from its imposing grille, which pays homage to historic Maserati cars like the Tipo 60 Birdcage, to the rear end which now looks wider and even more muscular, finished off (on the V8 versions) by those distinguishing oval shape exhaust tips. The car’s silhouette flows along the side of the car from the feline headlights to the characteristic Maserati rear pillar, creating a coupé look that is enhanced by frameless doors – a typical feature of modern Maserati cars.

But the restyling of Maserati’s grand SUV is about so much more than just aesthetics. Meticulous tests in the Turin wind tunnel have resulted in a class-leading aerodynamic efficiency. For example, an Air Shutter in the front grille now controls the air flow to the engine compartment thanks to continuous, electronically-controlled movement of the blades. This provides not only improves efficiency by reducing the car’s aerodynamic drag, but also helps optimise the temperature of the engine.

The most powerful Maserati in history And as for that power source, the re-engineered 3.8-litre Twin Turbo V8 is the most powerful Maserati engine today, for the first time mated with its Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. This powerplant is an evolution of the unit fitted in the flagship Quattroporte GTS but has been upgraded to now deliver significantly higher power output, from 530 hp in the Levante GTS to 590hp in the Levante Trofeo. Like any modern Maserati petrol engine, the Twin Turbo V8 has been developed in cooperation with Ferrari and is assembled in its state-of-the art factory in Maranello. This is the Maserati engine with the highest specific output in their history.

Thanks to a remarkable weight / power ratio ranging from 3.9 kg/hp for the Levante GTS to just 3.6 kg/hp for the Trofeo, Maserati proudly announce that ‘performance figures have skyrocketed to the higher end of the SUV class and are comparable to those of modern-day supercars’.

For example, it takes 4.3 seconds for the Levante GTS to accelerate from 0-100 km/h while the mighty Levante Trofeo needs only 4.1 seconds. A new ‘Corsa’ driving mode with Launch Control has also been introduced exclusively for the ultimate Levante, which is no other than the 590hp Trofeo.

Corsa mode is available in addition to the existing Normal, I.C.E., Sport and Off Road driving modes.

Alternatively the latest-generation 3.0-litre Twin Turbo V6 engines offer 350hp to 430hp which they claim are both powerful and exciting to drive. These are also manufactured by Ferrari in Maranello.

A cabin of comfort with exclusive materials The interior design of the Levante is focused either on luxury or sportiness, respectively in the GranLusso and GranSport trims. With the GranLusso for example Ermenegildo Zegna silk combines with three different shades of fine-grain leather (black, tan and red) and 100% natural fibre Zegna mulberry silk inserts on places like the 22 MARCH 2020

seats and door panels. The Trident emblem on the headrests is embroidered while the dashboard and the armrest are padded with leather. This unique and exclusive silk is made using a patented process in Trivero, Italy by the Zegna wool mill. And with the GranSport trim: the interior has been designed to give ‘a sense of passion and sportiness’ with exclusive elements such as12-way power sport front seats, power-adjustable sport steering wheel with aluminium gearshift paddles, and power adjustable Inox sport pedals.

The dashboard is designed around the 8.4” Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC+) display. The central console accommodates a new gearshift lever and a revised button cluster for the driving modes, the characteristic double rotary knob for basic infotainment functions and the air suspension height setup switch.

Designed to provide plenty of space for five passengers, in line with a long Maserati tradition, the customer has a wide range of interior customization now even things Pieno Fiore natural leather has been added as a top-end option. Maserati say that Pieno Fiore is like no other leather used in the automotive industry for its natural, soft feel.

It certainly looks like the company have definitely ramped up the power, the luxury and specification to make the Levante a serious and unique, distinctly Italian contender in the increasingly popular luxury SUV market.

here is a variety of speggtacular fun at Brooklands Museum over the Easter Holiday period from 6th – 17th April. Pick up your free Easter egg trail on arrival, head off around the Museum to solve the hidden clues and then head back to the Shop to claim your FREE chocolate prize.

The Museum’s long-established and hugely popular rides in vintage-style cars and on London Bus Museum’s iconic double-decker buses will also be operating during weekdays (except Good Friday and Easter Monday). Car rides take in the challenging summit of Test Hill and the Members’ Banking, the steepest part of the original Race Track or, for a more relaxed journey, hop on board a real double-decker bus for a bus trip through the surrounding streets. Car and bus rides* will run in the mornings and afternoons with a short break for lunch and are subject to crew and vehicle availability.

Also on the weekdays, any youngsters wanting to join the Brooklands pit crew can head over to the car workshop where they can put on overalls and discover the science behind the speed with an amazing ‘Get Ready to Race’ activity. You can build your own car with different components and try it down the specially constructed test slope to see how your design would really race.

The Concorde Experience is a half-hour virtual supersonic ‘flight’ on the Brooklands Concorde and runs every day, but on each weekday over Easter, special Kids Tours will be running twice a day. And

don’t forget to explore inside the awardwinning Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed. Inside the restored WWII hangar, visitors can ‘clock in’ and don factory work coats as they begin their ‘Brooklands Apprenticeship’.

A series of workshops and interactives explore some of the skills used over the 80-year history of aircraft manufacture at Brooklands. On a new mezzanine level, the story of aviation design at Brooklands is told and visitors can design their own military and civilian aircraft from different eras of aviation including those of the future. Leaving the Factory and entering the new Flight Shed visitors can see some of the Museum’s collection of complete aircraft, including opportunities to sit in the cockpits of the Hawker Hunter and Harrier, as well as displays on radar, ground-to-air radio and pioneering pilots.

The Sunbeam Café is the ideal place for refuelling and add to this a visit to the Museum Shop to pick up a souvenir and you have the recipe for a perfect day out come rain or shine.

By offering audiences a repertoire of three plays, Shakespeare’s Globe is following the touring tradition of Shakespeare’s day. Small groups of actors, each juggling a variety of roles from an extensive repertoire, would leave London and head off on tour, visiting all corners of England and often leaving the choice of play up to the most powerful person in the household.

Brendan O’Hea says, “I’m so pleased to be back on the road with the Touring Ensemble, transporting the spirit of the Globe around the world with simple, clear storytelling which brings Shakespeare to all. This year we will be performing three plays that explore themes of nature, the city and the places beyond. And, like the Elizabethan touring players before us, we will leave the choice of play to the most powerful voice in the room: the audience” West Horsley Place is an ideal location to host Globe on Tour. Dating from the 15th century, the Grade I listed house sits within a 380-acre estate which has passed through the hands of illustrious owners including Henry VIII and Carew Raleigh,

son of Sir Walter Raleigh. It has also hosted visitors including Queen Elizabeth I who stayed at the house in 1559. Archives reveal that in honour of this visit, the Queen’s Master of Revels and Tents organised a masque, Shipmen and Maids of the Country, building a temporary theatre for the occasion. The account describes thirteen tailors spending a fortnight creating costumes for the masque, with barges carrying the set, costumes and props to Hampton Court, where they were transported overland to West Horsley Place.

More recently, in 2014 historian Bamber Gascoigne unexpectedly inherited West Horsley Place from his aunt, Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe.

Determined to save the estate so that it could be enjoyed by the public, Bamber and his wife Christina generously transferred ownership to a charity, the West Horsley Place Trust, which is now seeking to rescue and restore West Horsley Place so that it is open to all with culture, heritage and community at its heart.

azz is experiencing a renaissance across the UK and nowhere more so than in Guildford which is home to the thriving, community arts organisation, Guildford Jazz . Founded in 2011 by former IT consultant turned professional bass player, Marianne Windham, Guildford Jazz aims to bring the best UK national jazz artIsts to Guildford in a welcoming, basement jazz club like setting. It currently runs two regular gigs a month, the jazz café at the Electric theatre and the Guildford Rugby Club Pavilion Broadwater both of which regularly sell out, and two outdoor , bring a picnic , jazz concerts at Loseley House and on the green at Wood Street. Six Surrey volunteer groups nominated for

2020 Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

V

olunteers from six Surrey groups, who dedicate their valuable time and experience to help individuals and communities across the county, have been nominated for the prestigious 2020 Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS). This is the equivalent of an MBE and is the highest national honour given to UK volunteers.

Over 50 representatives from those voluntary groups received an official ‘Thank You’ from HM Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Mr Michael MoreMolyneux, at a Reception on Tuesday 4th February at The Tithe Barn, Loseley Park.

Congratulating them all on having reached this nomination stage in the QAVS process for 2020, the Lord-Lieutenant said: “It is my earnest hope that your commitment and tireless work for the benefit of others in our local communities will be honoured with an Award in June this year. Without the work of charities and voluntary groups like yours, many communities in Surrey would be poorer and our ability to meet local need with care and compassion would be so much less. So the contribution you make is ever more important. This celebration of the wonderful work you do is uplifting, inspiring and humbling. We are so grateful for all that you contribute to the welfare of other people in Surrey.”

The Lord-Lieutenant also thanked Surrey County Council for its sponsorship of the Reception: the Council’s Chairman, Councillor Tony Samuels was present, along with representatives from almost all of the county’s 11 boroughs and districts. The event highlighted the outstanding contribution made by volunteers of all ages, ethnicity and diversity across local communities.

range from volunteering with: the Riverside Arts Centre, fostering and promoting the development of the arts amongst the residents of Spelthorne; Claygate Recreation Ground Trust, providing safe, high quality recreational facilities for residents all ages; Chiddingfold Bonfire Association, villagers who ensure community cohesion by raising funds on Bonfire Night to then support local vulnerable people throughout the year; Sport Godalming, a group that supports sports organisations and encourages development and participation for the benefit of the local community; the awardwinning Tice’s Meadow Nature Reserve near Farnham, where volunteers’ efforts provide a haven for wildlife and help residents of all ages and backgrounds to connect with the nature on their doorstep; and Walton Firs Foundation, a holistic activity and outdoor education centre benefitting often ‘at risk’and disabled young people, and built on inclusivity and service to others. The Surrey nominees for 2020 represent five of the Queen’s Award categories: Arts; Environment and Regeneration; Social Centre/Community; Sport; Youth/ Playscheme. Details of which (if any) of these six Surrey groups receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2020 will be announced publicly on 2nd June 2020 and any successful groups will be invited to send two representatives to a Royal Garden Party this summer. The Award itself – a certificate signed by the Queen and a domed crystal – will be presented to each winning group later in the year by Surrey’s Lord-Lieutenant or a Deputy Lieutenant, on behalf of HM The Queen.

Representatives from each of the groups were photographed with the Lord-Lieutenant at the Loseley Reception, together with the Vice LordLieutenant, Bill Biddell. He has chaired Surrey’s QAVS Local Assessment Panel for the past four years that he has been Vice Lord-Lieutenant, a role that he hands over to Sir Stephen Lamport on 8th February 2020.

The Surrey Panel is made-up of experienced assessors and an editor, who visited every nominated group between October and December 2019 before sending their findings to the National Award Committee. Bill Biddell recognised the outstanding work of those at the Reception, saying to them: “Your drive and professionalism show us what can be achieved by well-organised and committed volunteers, and the difference you all make for the benefit of others.”

Nominate dedicated volunteers for 2020 Surrey residents across the county are actively encouraged to nominate groups of deserving volunteers for the Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service 2021.

tarting as a themed supper club idea back in 2015 by owner Mandira Sarkar at her home in Guildford ‘Surrey Spice’ was born. A naturally talented chef in her own right Mandira’s culinary expertise is a collection of her experiences growing up on a tea plantation in Assam. Exposed to wonderful aromatic home cooked dishes she lamented the lack of them after moving to the UK in 1998. A former management consultant she finally decided to mobilize and recreate her much loved family recipes into products everyone can enjoy. Motivated by the desire to run her own show and harness her culinary creativity her business pretty quickly gathered speed. Supper club guests wanted to buy her food but Friday night take-aways to pick up from her house soon became unmanageable. To cope with demand Mandira turned her recipes into a delicious range of freshly frozen ready meals.

These are now sold to over 30 farm shops in the region. Within six months of launching two of her recipes won gold stars in the ‘Great Taste Awards’ and Mandira won best new producer in the 2018 Surrey Life Food and Drink Awards and best product for her Chicken Biriyani in 2019.

Moving last April to a permanent site on the Albury Estate the business was reborn as ‘Mandira’s Kitchen’ and is a neighbour to Silent Pool Distillers and Norbury Cheese. Their new fit for purpose unit offers a space for cookery classes and a small shop.

Visitors can enjoy a fresh chai, coffee and samosas to eat on the terrace. The full range of meals, are available to purchase from the shop, which is open everyday except Monday. When, Prince Edward formally opened the new location last November it was clear that this is a business to watch.

Contemplating Divorce?

I

magine the scenario, you have reached the sad conclusion that your marriage is over but you cannot face starting divorce proceedings. Perhaps you want to wait until the children have left home. Perhaps your spouse persuades you to stay, against your instincts.

Perhaps are concerned about the cost. You worry that the coming months will be painful, stressful, unpredictable and quite frankly at times, frightening.

Many people stay in marriages or civil partnerships long after their relationship has broken down and often for a host of understandable reasons but is it a good idea? Here are a few considerations for anyone contemplating divorce.

Sharing the assets

As a general rule all assets (property, cash and pensions) built up during a marriage are shared equally and the point of sharing is on the making of a financial order upon divorce and not when one of you decides the marriage is over.

Inheritances are treated differently and where possible the courts will ring fence these, but not if without that inheritance your spouse’s needs cannot be met. Equally an inheritance by one of you can be treated as your own resource and so potentially reduce your spouse’s obligation to provide for you.

Bonuses, salary increases, your business taking off and lottery wins all fall to be shared equally if they accrue while you are married.

Earning capacity

This is relevant to the question of maintenance and a spouse capable of being self-supporting is likely to need reduced or no financial support (although 42 MARCH 2020

this does not apply to child maintenance.) Some spouses remain at home to care for the family; some spouses stop work for a period. Many never go back to work for a number of reasons, including by mutual decision. The more time passes, the harder it can be to prove that they have an earning capacity and any obligation to pay maintenance could last longer and be more onerous.

Tax

If one of you leaves the family home, there is potentially CGT tax to pay when it is sold or transferred.

Reducing or hiding assets

Delay gives unscrupulous spouses time to overspend, dispose of or hide assets. The court has power to order an ‘add back’ or to set aside dispositions, but such cases are rare because they are difficult to prove and costly to run.

Separation then delayed divorce

All of the above considerations may still apply and it is a common misconception that sharing stops on separation. Your potential obligation to support your spouse remains until dismissed by a court order upon divorce.

FUNDING YOUR DIVORCE

T

he costs of funding a divorce and financial proceedings can be an important factor in deciding how to progress a matter.

It can often be the case that funds aren’t available to pay solicitor’s bills as they are raised, which may see the process stall.

There are several companies now offering litigation loans to help pay legal costs on the understanding that the loan is repaid from liquid matrimonial assets once the matter is settled and a court order made.

This can offer a real solution to a client struggling to fund a case.

How funding can help While a loan can help the cash flow problem, it also puts the parties on an equal footing, able to progress matters to a conclusion and reach a fair settlement. When there is an imbalance of financial fire power, one party may be pressured into accepting an offer that may not be fair to them, and the courts are quick to recognise such loans as a necessity and a valid liability.

The amount to borrow plus the interest needs to be considered in the context of what the party if hoping to achieve through the process. If it is the case that parties are £150,000 apart, and a party has been advised that their claim is closer to that which the judge may make at the end of litigation, the cost of borrowing can be seen as a practical and affordable means to an end, enabling the matter to progress to a conclusion.

As a solicitor it’s important to advise your client on the best chance of achieving the most favourable settlement spending as little as possible and with the least delay. That may mean taking the matter to court where the opposing party is maintaining an unrealistic position, and this is where litigation funding can help.

&A’s long-term collaboration with Sir Elton John and David Furnish revolutionises public access to photography. Comprising a significant donation towards the museum’s recently opened Photography Centre with a focus on the contemporary, the collaboration offers opportunities to bring together highlights from the V&A’s world-leading photography collection of over 800,000 photographs, alongside The Sir Elton John Photography Collection.

Sir Elton John began collecting photographs in 1991 and his collection is now regarded as one of the leading private photography collections in the world, distinguished by its exceptional quality and remarkable range and depth. From major vintage 20th century modernist works to cutting-edge contemporary images, the collection now holds over 7,000 fine art photographs. To make this collaboration possible, the V&A has worked closely with Rocket Entertainment along with Newell Harbin, Director of the Sir Elton John Photography Collection.

It also includes photographs by the most exciting contemporary artists working today, from Cindy Sherman to Alec Soth and Alex Prager. Throughout their collecting, Sir Elton John and David Furnish have been keen to share their photography collection with the widest possible audience – a mission shared by the V&A. Their continuous philanthropic support of public institutions, and loan of key works to national and international exhibitions, has created new insights, dialogues and connections to further the study, enjoyment and appreciation of the medium.

Sir Elton John and David Furnish’s generous donation enables the V&A to realise its ambitions of showcasing highlights from its extensive photography holdings, with a series of temporary 52 MARCH 2020

displays, new acquisitions and annual contemporary commissions. Opened to the public in October 2018, the V&A’s Photography Centre is situated in the museum’s North East Quarter, reclaiming a series of beautiful original 19th-century picture galleries.

Designed to revolutionise the way in which visitors engage with photography, it displays vintage prints, negatives and contact sheets, alongside photographic equipment and archive material to tell broader stories around the history of photography.

A new extension scheduled to open in 2022 will expand the V&A’s Photography Centre further to include a teaching and research space, a browsing library, an historic darkroom, and a studio for photographers’ residencies, offering new and exciting ways for visitors to encounter this diverse and dynamic art form. Entrance is FREE.

The V&A holds the National Collection of the Art of Photography. The museum has collected photographs since its foundation in 1852 and continues to collect today. The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) collection was transferred to the V&A by the Science Museum Group in 2017 and was acquired with the generous assistance of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Art Fund.

The V&A’s collection encompasses the work of leading historic and contemporary photographers as well as publications, cameras and related equipment. TATE MODERN presents Andy Warhol 12 March – 6 September 2020. A new look at the extraordinary life and work of the pop art superstar

A

ndy Warhol (1928–87) was one of the most recognisable artists of the late 20th century, yet his life and work continue to fascinate and be interpreted anew. A shy, gay man from a religious, migrant, low income household, he forged his own distinct path to emerge as the epitome of the pop art movement.

This major new exhibition at Tate Modern – the first at the gallery for almost 20 years – offers visitors a rare personal insight into how Warhol and his work marked a period of cultural transformation. Drawing upon recent scholarship, it will provide a new lens through which to view this American icon.

Featuring over 100 works from across his remarkable career, the show will shed light on how Warhol’s experiences helped shape his unique take on 20th century culture, positioning him within the shifting creative and political landscape in which he worked.

While he is best known for his iconic paintings of Coca-Cola bottles and Marilyn Monroe that held up a mirror to American culture, the exhibition will emphasise recurring themes around desire, identity and belief that emerge from Warhol’s biography.

Key works from the pop period, such as Marilyn Diptych 1962, Elvis I and II 1963/1964 and Race Riot 1964, will be examined in relation to contemporary issues around American culture and politics, while Warhol’s limitless ambition to push the boundaries of media will be represented via his famous Screen Tests 1964–6 and a recreation of the psychedelic multimedia environment of Exploding Plastic Inevitable 1966.

Visitors will also be able to experience Warhol’s floating Silver Clouds 1966 installation, initially meant to signal his ‘retirement’ from painting in favour of moviemaking. He famously stated that ‘good business is the best art’: the exhibition will look at how Warhol’s forays into publishing and TV, as well as his interest in club culture.

and colourist with a room dedicated to the largest grouping of his 1975 Ladies and Gentlemen series ever shown in the UK. These striking portraits depict figures from New York’s transgender community, including iconic performer and activist, Marsha ‘Pay it no mind’ Johnson - a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969.

Warhol’s final works of the 80s, such as the poignant Sixty Last Suppers 1986 – on view at Tate Modern for the first time in this country – will be considered in relation to the artist’s untimely death as well as the unfolding HIV/AIDS epidemic, which ultimately went on to impact the lives of many in his close circle.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, as well as an extensive programme of public talks and film screenings with exclusive new merchandise collections in the gallery shops.

“Literally just cook a meal and watch Netflix with my husband, something gritty on there.”

ne of Britain’s most celebrated athletes, Dame Jessica EnnisHill now mostly runs around after her two kids, rather than around an athletics track but that doesn’t mean she’s slowed down.

The 34-year-old famously returned to the heptathlon to win gold at the Beijing World Championships in 2015, just 15 months after giving birth to her first child, her son Reggie, now five. Since then, she’s hung up her track spikes and had a second child, daughter Olivia, now two, with husband Andy, who she married back in 2013.

She’s also launched a fitness app, Jennis, which features short, indoor workouts aimed mainly at pregnant and postnatal women, as well as anyone who just want to improve their fitness with quick at-home workouts.

What’s your fitness routine now you’ve retired from athletics?

“I try and do two circuit sessions a week. I’ll do one on a Monday with my husband, then I’ll fit one in later in the week, and I’ll walk the dog and try and do a hill run session when my daughter is at nursery and Reggie’s at school. So I’d say I exercise three times a week, and I’ll fit in an ab circuit as and when I can.

“For me, it’s about exercising conveniently. It’s body works and high-intensity like burpees, which work your cardiovascular system but also strengthen your muscles and get you really fit.

“If I did go down to the track, with the hurdles, I might think, ‘Shall I just have a go?’ But gosh, I’d probably tear my hamstring or something!”

How do you cope with stress?

“Exercise! If I’ve had one of those days, which I had the other day and at the end of it you’re just so tired - just doing a circuit, you feel so much better. Because you can get all your adrenaline and aggression out while exercising, and then you feel much better after.”

What’s guaranteed to make you instantly happy?

“My kids, just seeing them.”

Describe your ideal Saturday morning “The weeks are so busy rushing around everywhere, so on Saturdays, for me it’s just nice to have a lazy morning and a late brunch with the kids. Then take the dog out to the woods and go on a little adventure, something outdoorsy in the afternoon so [the kids] feel like they’ve burned off some energy!”

What’s your favourite healthy meal to make?

“I quite like making a sweet potato dahl, with a bit of spinach in there. That’s nice when the weather is bad.”

How many hours do you sleep a night?

“I probably sleep about eight hours.”

Do you meditate?

“I used to. I did yoga for a while leading up to the Olympics, and we always did meditation after, which I loved. I was like, ‘Let’s skip the yoga and

just do that’. Then I didn’t have time to do it, but recently I’ve started doing a bit before bed and I think it’s so good for you. “It actually gives you time to completely stop thinking about everything you’ve got to do in life - I think that’s really important.”

Coffee or herbal tea?

“Coffee.”

Can you touch your toes?

[Laughs] “Yeah.”

Have you ever tried any weird diets?

“No, I’m not for faddy things and diets. I love food, I like having a glass of wine, so I allow myself to do that by exercising, and just keeping active and being balanced in life.”

What’s your guilty pleasure?

“I’ve got a massive sweet tooth, so anything chocolatey, desserts, cheesecake...”

Any health and fitness goals for 2020?

“To continue keeping fit. I think it’s so hard to get to that fitness level, and if you just maintain, it’s so much easier than trying to get there. So for 2020, I just want to maintain good fitness and enjoy exercising.”

Dr Kim Prescott discusses treatments that enhance collagen production in the skin

M

ultiple factors that contribute to accelerated aging in the skin are difficult to avoid, from nutrient deficiencies or changes in hormone levels, to extrinsic factors like sun exposure and environmental pollution. Over time, the active cells in the skin, the fibroblasts, become less efficient at producing collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, and as the structure of the skin alters it become thinner.

This leads to skin laxity, with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as uneven pigmentation.

There are so many different treatments available for improving skin quality, and one of the most commonly asked questions in my practice is which one is the best. There is no easy answer to that question, as science backs up the reality that many of these skin technologies come with clinical studies demonstrating results. It is important to remember, however, that in every study, there is a group of people who do not respond, or who do not respond as well as some of the others. In addition, some technologies are associated with higher risks of side-effects in certain people. For this reason, it is important that your skin practitioner assesses your skin carefully and selects a personalised treatment plan for you. Increasingly, treatment plans will involve combinations of treatments conducted over a period of time – often 4 to 6 months – in order to work on different anti-aging pathways, and to increase the chances of ongoing effects after the

treatments are completed.

I’ll cover a few different treatments over the next few months, but recently I’ve had a few questions about 2 popular treatment modalities, microneedling and radiofrequency, so I’ll start with these two. Both modalities are well established in terms of their efficacy and safety profiles, and sophisticated new technology platforms now combine them into a single treatment for enhanced results.

COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY Also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), microneedling involves creating tiny channels in the epidermis and dermis of the skin. The treatment improves penetration of targeted ingredients into the dermis, activates fibroblasts, to produce collagen and elastin and stimulates the release of the body’s own rejuvenation messengers known as growth factors. Overall improvements in skin texture and tone following a microneedling treatment are clinically proven in a number of clinical studies, including a series of skin biopsies published by Dr Des Fernandes, a renowned skin research scientist, that clearly showed an increase in collagen of more than 400%.

Microneedling can be done at home for noticeable improvements in skin, but medical microneedling is indicated to manage more specific skin concerns, including scarring and pigmentation.

setting by a highly trained health professional for optimal results. It is very important that the correct products are used in some of these more advanced treatments, and that the practitioner adjusts for accurate depth of penetration in the different areas of the skin and for different skin concerns.

As it doesn’t use any kind of energy, microneedling remains one of the best treatments to treat skin in certain areas, including skin over the thyroid or breast area and the delicate skin under the eyes. (Figure 1)

platforms are currently available, including Fractora and VoluDerm. VoluDerm Hybrid Energy treatment combines dual energy, RF first for effective penetration and controlled heating of the skin, followed by galvanic current for enhanced clinical results. The HE energy is delivered via an array of sophisticated micro-pins, with minimal disruption to the outer layer of the skin (and therefore minimal downtime). A number of clinical studies have demonstrated significant improvement in the volume of the skin due to increased levels of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. (Figures 3 and 4)

Prepare your shoulders and arms for an injury-free summer of sport

s my memories of our gloomy winter fade I’ll be dusting down my tennis racquet and golf clubs in anticipation of a summer of sport. I suspect this will be the same for many of you; unless of course you’ve been diligently practising and maintaining your condition over the winter; in which case well done and I hope your efforts are rewarded!

As an upper limb specialist, I see countless frustrated tennis players and golfers whose seasons have been interrupted, or ruined by injury. Many problems (e.g. tennis elbow, rotator cuff injury and wrist tendonitis) could be avoided by some pre-season exercises, technique improvements and equipment adjustment.

Whatever your summer sport, I hope this article will give you a few tips and the motivation to get started with some training to help you avoid injury this summer.

1. Exercise program – core strength, spine mobility and shoulder strengthening Many injuries in the shoulder, elbow and wrist result from weakness in the core and rotator cuff muscles and stiffness in the thoracic spine, as these result in overcompensation elsewhere as players try to generate force, reach and speed.

An exercise program can make a big difference to your game, and also reduce chance of injury.

Ideally, seek advice from a qualified personal trainer or a physiotherapist who will give you a tailored program. Your program should include: • Cardiovascular conditioning (endurance, concentration and speed) • Core strengthening (a sound core improves balance and control to reduce injury) • Thoracic spine mobilisation (a stiff spine overloads the shoulder and arm) • Scapula stabilizer strengthening (latissimus dorsi, rhomboids, lower trapezius) • Rotator cuff strengthening (the rotator cuff muscles control the shoulder joint) Many different exercises exist: most can easily be done at home with resistance bands or small dumbbells. If you cannot get professional advice, there are many videos available on YouTube and sports magazines often run articles on conditioning for their sport. Technique Improvement Sports involve repeated cycles of specific movements of high velocity; and these movements are repeated countless times in training and play.

Most of us have imperfect technique, either throughout our game, or just with a specific action (e.g. backhand). Even a small error will be repeated 78 MARCH 2020

countless times and may cause additional injury.

Investing in coaching to analyse your technique and identify areas that you can improve is worthwhile. atherine Richards is an advocate of personal style and discovering what that really means for each of us.

We are sitting together on the seafront drinking café con leche in Spain where she has been working on a large refurbishment project.

“I am often surprised at how often people are unable to articulate their taste”, she says. “Most clients seem to find it easy to tell me what they don’t like, but having clarification on what they do like is

another thing altogether. It’s exciting when people allow themselves to be put in what can sometime feel like a dangerous place- allowing me to nudge them into considering the idea of accepting new ideas, colours, shapes. It can feel like unchartered waters, but great things happen when the idea of looking in a new direction is embraced. These challenges can be exhilarating for both client and designer”.

Here in Spain the light is so different, the pace of life slower and it is easy to see that she finds designing in such a different environment from Sussex (where she is based) both exhilarating and inspiring.

Katherine has spent much of her time in Spain in recent years, creating fantastic bespoke pieces for clients who are willing to break boundaries and trust her enough to give her artistic license. “When a client is willing to allow me to not only present them with strong new ideas, but to run with them too, it is a privilege and a designer’s dream,” she says with a smile Katherine Richards has an enormous passion for the art of design, not just the practicality of it. It is clear to see that when given the task of creating something unusual she will certainly deliver with gusto, whether it is in UK or overseas.

“The exciting thing is to produce things which are challenging. I too like being out of my comfort zone sometimes!”

Katherine is committed to her work which evidently drives her enthusiasm which is infectious to be around. A professional and an artist, her clients say she is joy to collaborate with.

“The effect of bespoke design, whether it is a large piece of artwork or a carefully considered wall colour choice is often, in my view, undervalued.

“As soon as a client makes the decision to trust and embark on that journey of discovery with me, surprising things happen. Colours have a direct effect on how we feel and behave, shapes too have an impact. When the lighting is right and the design is perfectly balanced, the home which was just ‘ok’ becomes the best place to be in the world. And shouldn’t that always be the case?”

andowners with land capable of being put forward for residential planning applications may face the choice of developing the land’s value through an option agreement or through a promotion agreement.

In a “traditional” option agreement the Developer would most usually offer a price per unit outcome and then through a series of conditions, exclusions and exemptions undermine the ultimate price paid to the Landowner at Completion.

Alternatively they would offer a simple buy out figure, which would be significantly less than the eventual value of the land with planning.

Under either example if they have offered too much at the outset the option holder may chose not to execute the option at all and the landowner may have lost significant time in the process.

The nature of the option agreement is necessarily in opposition to the seller as the developer seeks to reduce the Land Value as much as they can.

Their Profit is there but buried in the fine print. On strategic land, they would typically be working on planning gain margins in excess of 35% of an open market valuation.

The Promoters margin is explicit and the

Promoter is incentivised to produce the best possible planning outcome for mutual advantage.

They also risk their own capital in the promotion process. This is on a strictly reward for outcome basis.

In a Promotion agreement the price paid is the best price available in the marketplace subject to a competitive bidding process and with no imperative to complete immediately on planning consent so any market fluctuations can be mitigated or exploited.

A Promotion Agreement requires a partnership arrangement between the Landowner and the Promoter to work best. The Landowner’s whole interests are protected and they may choose as little or as much involvement as they wish.

A criticism of the Promotion process is that as the consent is not tailored to a specific end user it may produce a consent that local developers may not wish to buy. We use our expertise, capital and market knowledge to deliver the best possible project for the site in full knowledge of local market characteristics.

Architectural character and quality can be preserved in the project through good design without incurring excessive build costs. As a Promoter we are committed to place making, to ensure the quality and the long term sustainability of the community. We also believe that this drives the best value outcomes.

Our promotion would be buildable, value engineered and packaged for sale to ensure that the sale price is maximised.

Designers To Watch in 2020: Patricia Urquiola Words: Anna Howell, Chaplins

Patricia Urquiola is perhaps the most famous female designer alive today. And yet for all the awards and accolades, it’s her intense energy that distinguishes her from the rest of the field.

It’s a quality she can be relied upon to bring to every project that she undertakes — be that re-energising iconic hotels or reimagining the future of outdoor living.

As part of the Chaplins’ Designers To Watch in 2020 series, we sat down with Patricia to talk politics, artistic challenges and all things Cassina.

financial or class. A dream would be designing behaviours, to improve the quality of our daily life, while simultaneously improving the impact that these have on our surroundings.

What’s your greatest challenge as Art Director of Cassina?

I have a great respect for the brand, my aim since 2015 is to bring a contemporary way of doing things and to project Cassina towards the future without forgetting its glorious past. I want to be sure that the brand will continue to have its “experimental” spirit in order to enrich its broad archive. My role is not about creating and commissioning new items but also discovering how to keep Cassina alive and evolving.

Does the political Zeitgeist influence the way you design? Or are they two separate things?

Not only the political agenda, in my work I like to reflect and observe the whole society. I observe everything; I need to understand where contemporaneity is going. Designers and architects need to observe the social scene to come to a tangible synthesis.

Today, for instance, we cannot design an object without taking into consideration its impact on the environment. As recently exhibited at the Triennale di Milano, we’re left with a “Broken Nature”, we’re more conscious than ever of our problems and we’re ready to really change our habits and our consumption. So, my work cannot be limited to, for example, the selection of eco-compatible materials, but it needs to re-imagine every aspect of the entire production cycle and transport. It’s important that we designers work together with the companies to facilitate all of this. It is, of course, a long process.

What does your dream commission look like in 2020?

I can’t answer this question precisely, I am lucky enough to work with many different companies, developing diverse projects for many years now.

I’m currently working on my personal exhibition in Madrid, of course the art direction for Cassina and other projects for Milan Design Week in April 2020.

I can say, however, that my mind is always busy to find feasible solutions for an optimistic future, dedicating myself to defend any kind of diversity and reduce any kind of gap either gender, social,

Are there any trends or ideas from the past year that you’ll be taking with you into the new decade?

I have never believed in trends; I care more about creating empathy and the sense of place and time.

I start each project with a blank page and try to visualize every user’s need and develop everything based on this. Every brand is unique with its own history and a very different way of working therefore I create a different relationship and dialogue for each client.

When you’re not in the studio working, where can we find you?

I like going to the cinema and visiting museums with my family. It’s a sort of continuous research for my work. I’m also a bookworm, I love to read; frequently I find ideas and clues that I apply to my design projects.

I’m often travelling for work; it has become indeed an important part of my life. When I’m abroad I love to dedicate some time, unfortunately not very much, for myself to get in contact with other cultures, visiting exhibitions, small museums or simply walking around. Travelling is an important source of inspiration for me.

Ibiza has been my family’s summer escape since I was a little child. Though it has changed a lot, it was an island of freedom full of artists and hippies; very different from Oviedo, my birthplace. I guess it was a sort of first source of inspiration with these free ideas. Each year I go back to the island and disconnect from the world to enjoy my family.

Faded Glamour

S

inger-turned-fashion designer Pearl Lowe is renowned for her quirky, individual style - so it’s probably no surprise that she defiantly dances to her own tune when it comes to her decor choices too.

Her home - a rambling 11-bedroom Georgian mansion in Somerset - showcases her trademark blend of grand, romantic chic and cool rock ‘n roll.

It’s all about ‘faded glamour’ for Pearl Lowe and her designer friends. Gabrielle Fagan finds out how to get the look.

‘eclectic’,” observes London-born Lowe. “That’s fine by me, because I don’t believe there should be any rules - unless you want your house to be a hotel,” the 49-year-old declares with a smile.

She sums up her interior style as “faded glamour” - and this is also the title of her new book, which celebrates her approach to decor and creating spaces she loves.

Faded Glamour gives us a glimpse into not only Lowe’s own home, but also the private spaces of her super-creative designer friends, including Solange Azagury-Partridge, Alice Temperley and Sera Hersham Loftus.

There are colourful living rooms, intimate bedrooms, and plush bathrooms which showcase the many different ways ‘faded glamour’ can be interpreted - from urban to rustic, and bohemian to vintage.

“I’d say it’s a gloriously decadent yet well-lived-in decorating style. I think of rooms that are elegant yet whimsical at the same time,” muses Lowe.

She shares her own home with her musician husband, Danny Goffey (of the Nineties band Supergrass), and their children Alfie, 23, Frankie 20, and Betty, 15.

Her daughter, model Daisy, 31, is a regular visitor too.

Throughout the property, Lowe has managed to deftly mix precious pieces of antique furniture with contemporary colourful pieces from flea markets, which happily sit alongside 18th century mahogany wood and 1950s plastic retro.

Wear-and-tear and the patina of age aren’t hidden. Instead, they’re revered and deliberately embraced.

has far more allure than something brand new,” says Lowe.

“What I enjoy is the mix, the alchemy you create when you play around with styles... where chintz sits alongside animal print and sultry velvets; rococo suddenly goes a little rock ‘n roll, and a freestanding 1970s Anglepoise lamp sets it all alight.”

As a designer, she draws inspiration from many quarters: art, film, photography, music, travel and above all - her friends, especially Rachel Ashwell, the designer and writer who introduced us all to ‘shabby chic’ back in the Nineties.

Ashwell, says Lowe, “taught me how to create spaces that are not just decadent and stylish, but deliciously inviting and alluringly comfortable”.

Here, we take a sneak peek at some of the homes bringing ‘faded glamour’ to life...

Colourful Faded Glamour Solange Azagury-Partridge This interior literally “sets your spirit soaring”, enthuses Lowe. This is a home where sofas and chairs are covered in a giddy array of colourful fabrics and throws, and who’s style takes influences from the East. It’s a harmony of surprising contrasts - a sofa in a Sanderson flowery chintz sits alongside one dressed in an Ikat print, while yellow velvet clashes with shocking pink toile de Jouy wallpaper, and mismatched Moroccan rugs form a rainbow patchwork across the floors. Fabric used for walls adds to a sense of warmth as well as enriching the palette of shades, while the woodwork is painted baby pink. “Solange’s bold use of colour is full of wit and wonder and brings a smile to your face,” says Lowe.

from original plaster roses on the ceiling, and black-andwhite photographs and contemporary art line the walls of wood-panelled reception rooms. A mix of intriguing finds from local flea markets - twinkling candelabras, vintage glassware, bespoke china and stacks of rare books - are just some of the treasures that embellish the space and enhance character and interest. “What I love about this house is that despite the grandeur of the building itself - which in other hands could look austere and formal - Alice has, with her inherent romantic aesthetic, created a whimsical, enchanted world here,” Lower says admiringly.

Fashion and interior designer Hersham-Loftus has banished walls from her London apartment, and transformed it into a giant living space simply divided into areas by beautiful panels of fabric.

Hand-made muslin curtains - appliqued with vintage lace and hand-dyed - hang over windows, and ceilings are painted black. She’s furnished with day-beds, antique furniture and a jungle of vast potted plants throughout, which conceal subtle lighting effects. The designer’s style, says Lowe, is ever evolving, and “sumptuous, seductive, exotic, and highly unique”.

The first residents have moved into their homes at a new development in Midhurst

he first residents have now moved into the houses built by Metis Homes at the King Edward VII Estate in Midhurst, West Sussex.

You can barely see the houses within the grounds as we’re nestled within pretty woodland, and when I walk out of my front door I’m immediately looking out onto open green space.

“We have so many things on our doorstep within the Estate to enjoy too and as a dog friendly

place there are so many walks we can choose from because we are right on the edge of the National Trust. Being able to work from home is a luxury, and with lots of people already living here, there is a good community feel. These are all big selling points for me.”

Hand Forging Magic In Hertfordshire…
