INNER SOUNDS An Exhibition of Contemporary Tapestry Weaving About Tapestry Weaving:

F

ourth biennial exhibition of contemporary woven tapestry art. Inner Sounds, as a woven tapestry art exhibition, is the latest in a series of biennials showcasing the individual creative practices of members of the British Tapestry Group South East (BTGSE). The theme of the exhibition explores types of listening, visualised in a world saturated with sounds and images, with the intention of raising awareness whether as viewer, listener or tapestry weaver. The exhibitors have explored their responses through the medium of woven tapestry to create rich and varied works of art. The tapestry art on display will include works from all members including those who exhibit nationally and internationally as well as from those who are at different stages of their artistic journeys. Within the exhibition there will be: Weaving supplies and postcards for purchase; Other textile related stalls; Demonstrations of tapestry weaving; Opportunities to meet and talk to the weavers

Haslemere’s links to weaving Surrey and Sussex have a rich history of weaving and so it is fitting that the exhibition is being held at the Haslemere Museum as the town was a thriving centre for weaving as recently as 100 years ago. Haslemere’s Arts and Craft movement was based around Foundry Meadow. The silk weaver, Luther Hooper ran the Haslemere silk weaving studio from Green Bushes. Nearby at the Weaving House on Kings Road, Maude Egerton King set up eleven looms to teach local women to weave. Next door was the Tapestry Studio where tapestries and rugs were made to Godfrey Blount’s designs. www.haslemeresociety.org

By raising public awareness through its exhibitions and regional activities, the BTG showcases the combination of craftsmanship and artistic inspiration that is translated into woven pieces.

About the British Tapestry Group: The British Tapestry Group (BTG) promotes and explores the concept of woven tapestry as a contemporary art form. By raising public awareness through its exhibitions and regional activities, the BTG showcases the combination of craftsmanship and artistic inspiration that is translated into woven pieces. The British Tapestry Group welcomes professional UK and international tapestry weavers as well as supporting those who are starting on their weaving journey. More information on the British Tapestry Group can be found at www.thebritishtapestrygroup.co.uk 14 MARCH 2018

“Tapestry as an expressive art holds a precious heritage of connection through the personal narratives and life histories of those who commissioned the works and those who have woven them” (Leslie Millar, Professor of Textile Culture at the University of the Creative Arts) Tapestry weaving is an ancient art form that has been practised since early history and has continued to evolve into the computer age of the 21st century. It is slow art in a fast-paced society. Technical ability is combined with artistic inspiration to produce unique insights that are translated into weavings. What is so fascinating about woven tapestry is just this - that the process has remained largely the same over the centuries but the imagery remains contemporary to its time, just as with painting. The contemporary tapestries in this exhibition respect the traditions and techniques of the past but push the boundaries to create woven art that is of our time. Materials and process are important, with artists utilising the textural and reflective qualities of a range of materials including wool, silk, linen, cotton, paper, nettle and found objects. Woven tapestry is created on a series of vertical threads, ‘the warp’, into which coloured threads are interlaced largely horizontally, ‘the weft’, forming a fabric. (Unlike needlepoint tapestry which is worked on a stretched canvas cloth.) For many modern tapestries the artist creates the design, translates it into a drawing, ‘the cartoon’, and weaves the work as well. The artist weaver therefore develops a full range of creative practices (design, drawing and the technical aspects of weaving). This is the approach taken by the contributors to the exhibition, and leads to many, varied interpretations of the theme Inner Sounds – it is also what makes woven tapestry such a rich imaginative and accomplished visual art. Wednesday 4th April – Saturday 21st April excluding Sundays. Open 10.00 – 5.00pm daily Haslemere Museum, 78 High Street, Haslemere GU27 2LA; 01428 642112 www.haslemeremuseum.co.uk

Silent Pool Distillery to open new distillery extension

W

ith the drive to expand their presence both nationally and internationally, Silent Pool Distillers, producers of the multiaward winning Silent Pool Gin, are due to open their new distillery in April this year, just three years after they first started back in 2015. The new distillery extension will contain an 1800L, custom made copper still, 5 times the size of their original still Juliet, allowing the company to keep up with the current and increasing global demand. Unlike many other distilleries, Silent Pool Distillers proudly bottle their spirits onsite ensuring that each product is entirely crafted within the four walls of the distillery. It was of great importance to the company that even with increased production, their ethos of personally overseeing every stage of production remained. With the aid of an EU grant the distillery will also unveil a new bottling line built in Italy which will enable the company to hold true to overseeing each stage onsite but also to meet the

fast growing demand. The expansion has been driven in large part by exports, Silent Pool Gin is now available in over 24 countries including most of mainland Europe, Japan and America; this has resulted in more jobs for local people and local trades who supply the business. The efficiency of the larger still will allow the innovative distillers to dedicate more time to product development within gin but also whiskey and brandy. Part of what makes the distillation process so authentic is the method they use to power their hand made still. Similar to Juliet, the new still will be heated by steam from a reclaimed, vintage boiler that’s fired on local hardwood. Originally designed to power a steamboat in a 1980’s film, this classically British, McEwen boiler has been reformed and adopted by the distillers at Silent Pool and is now an essential part to the production of their handcrafted spirits. Becoming a ‘greener distillery’ was integral in the planning stages of the expansion and with over 40 solar panels covering every square inch of the new roof, the distillery extension will now generate enough electricity across the year to be completely carbon neutral, Silent Pool Gin really will be made by sunshine! Nestled on the banks of the spring-fed Silent Pool, deep within the rolling Surrey Hills, the distillery is open to visitors 7 days a week, MondaySaturday 9:30-17:00, Sundays & Bank holidays 10:00 – 15:00. You can even immerse yourself into the world of Silent Pool Gin with a 90 minute deep dive distillery tour, covering all aspects of production including product sampling. Easter fun at Brooklands T

here is some speggtacular Easter Family Fun at Brooklands this April with an Easter Egg Trail that will keep visitors entertained every day from 30th March – 15th April. During this period visitors will be able to collect their free Trails on arrival, head off around the Museum to solve the hidden clues, and then back to the Shop to claim their FREE chocolate prize. And there are loads of other Easter attractions at the Museum to keep visitors absorbed for the rest of their visit once they’ve solved the Trail clues. The Museum’s long-established and hugely popular rides in vintage-style cars and on London Bus Museum’s iconic double-decker buses will also be operating during weekdays from 3rd – 13th April. Car rides take in the challenging summit of Test Hill and the Members’ Banking, the steepest part of the original Race Track, as long as it’s not too wet or slippery. Or, for a more relaxed journey, hop on board a real double-decker bus for a bus trip through the surrounding streets. Car and bus rides will run in the mornings and afternoons with a short break for lunch and are subject to crew and vehicle availability. The Concorde Experience is a half-hour virtual supersonic ‘flight’ on the Brooklands Concorde and runs every day, but on each weekday from 3rd – 20th April, special Kids Tours will be running twice a day. And don’t forget to look out for the Museum’s larger than life mascot, Bertie Bear, who will be roaming the site looking for fans to have his photograph taken with weekdays 3rd - 13th April. The Brooklands Learning Team will be running two FREE drop-in workshops for youngsters: from 3rd – 6th April they can test how much cargo a paper plane can take while from 9th – 13th April they can have a go at painting their own Pompom Easter Egg to take home. All of the Museum’s regular displays and activities will be open to help families have a lively and absorbing visit,

including the new Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed. Inside the newly restored Bellman hangar, visitors will be able to clock in and don factory workcoats as they begin their ‘Brooklands Apprenticeship’. A series of workshops and interactives explore some of the skills used over the 80-year history of aircraft manufacture at Brooklands. On a new mezzanine level, the story of design at Brooklands is told and visitors can design their own military and civilian aircraft from different eras of aviation including those of the future. Leaving the Factory and entering the new Flight Shed visitors will see some of the Museum’s collection of complete aircraft, including opportunities to sit in the cockpits of the Hawker Hunter and Harrier, as well as displays on radar, ground-to-air radio and pioneering pilots. Easter is coming Easter is coming, and so are the Easter Eggs! Which one will you choose this year? We went along to visit Chris Bachmann at his multi award winning Weybridge Patisserie in the search of the perfect egg. We asked him, “What makes a Bachmanns Egg so special?”

“A

ll our Easter Eggs and Bunnies are hand-made with love on the premises. There are a few reasons why I think that our Easter products are the best in the UK. First, we use one of the finest couvertures in the world, sourced from a small manufacturer in Switzerland. It not only eats well on its own, but marries perfectly with other flavours. Not only is the chocolate perfectly tempered and therefore beautifully shiny, but unlike factory made products, the chocolate is poured into the moulds, allowed to set, and then another molten layer of chocolate is added. When this layer sets, it creates a tension or fault line between the layers, which improves the “snap” of the chocolate when eaten. Last, we also hand sculpt our eggs, adding a final exterior textured layer, and by adding chocolate flowers and hand made buttons, each egg becomes an individual work of chocolate art. It is the repeated lamination that makes the eggs break up delicately before melting in the mouth, and that is what truly sets them apart. However, this takes a lot of skill, and we have a great team here under Wayne Harris our head Chef, and our choclatier Dan Ellis. Filled with either our legendary fresh cream truffles, or packed and encrusted with Crunchy Almond Rochers (baton almonds, macerated in cointreau, toasted with icing sugar over a hot flame, and mixed with melted chocolate and cocoa butter) our Eggs make an exquisite and unique gift for that special someone. We only make and stock our eggs for the three weeks between Mothers Day and Easter- that way we can pack them so that the products are super fresh and tasting their best- you know they haven’t been sitting around on a shelf in a warehouse for months and months. “In fact, a couple of Easters ago, one lucky lady opened her Bachmanns egg to find a diamond and platinum engagement nestling inside. Bachmanns were asked to pack the ring in its box into a truffle filled 800g dark chocolate egg so the suitor could propose in style on Easter day. “I must admit, I was quite relieved to get the ring and the egg back to the owner- it was a gorgeous piece of jewellery and I imagine it was extremely expensive. It was quite a compliment that we were trusted to look after it. I am delighted to say that we got a thank you letter from him and his new fiancé the week later” Bachmanns Patisserie, 32 Church St, Weybridge KT13 8DX, 01932 820 247 6 Criterion Buildings, Portsmouth Road, Thames Ditton KT7 0SS, 020 8398 1988

Cobham’s N well-kept Secret

Walton Firs Activity Centre is a very well-kept secret in Cobham. Nestled down a private road opposite Notre Dame School, it would be hard to find unless you knew of its existence.

evertheless it is becoming ever more popular with youth groups seeking a great base for exploring the local area, but with plenty of activities on-tap to keep large numbers of children entertained. The site was owned by The UK Scouting Association between 1939 and 2008, but for the last ten years it has been owned by a small charity (Walton Firs Foundation), which was established specifically to save it from closure following the Scout’s decision to dispose of it. The site continues to welcome Scouting and Girlguiding organisations, but has now also opened it’s doors to a broad variety of other youth groups and charities all working for the benefit of young people. Some of the regular site visitors include Surrey Young Carers, Foster Children, many schools, church and faith groups and other youth groups with special educational needs or physical disabilities. The site comprises approximately 36 acres and has extensive camping grounds, but it also has three large buildings available for hire and a wide range of outdoor activities. These activities are designed to be educational, challenging and fun with a focus on the development of essential life skills which young people may struggle to learn in a classroom. There is a wealth of academic research available on the benefits of outdoor education, and the Government continues to espouse the necessity for it. Self-confidence, teamwork, leadership and

communication skills are just a few of the positives, but as well as the skills based and physical positives, emotional and mental wellbeing amongst young people and adults has also been shown to be improved by exposure to some good old fashioned outdoor fun. Just occasionally, the Centre allows the great Cobham public to visit. Last year the site held a ‘Wild Weekend’ in August which encouraged members of the local community to try caving, crate stacking, archery and some of the other outdoor activities available. The event was a big success, and precipitated the next public offering – The North Surrey Mud Runner to be held on 10th March 2018. There are 3km and 6km routes on offer, so maybe too short for the serious athlete – but a good opportunity for some filthy fun for young people and the less athletic amongst us to commune with nature. There are some good group discount on offer, so why not join up with some friends and have some fun? It is all for a good cause, after all… Further details available at www.waltonfirs.co.uk/event, email info@waltonfirs.co.uk or telephone 01932 863243 for more information. “The exhibition is a great collector opportunity to learn more about the stars of the future”

ising Stars is a platform to view and collect some of the most exciting new craft by emerging makers from crafts and applied arts programmes across the UK. This curated exhibition is accompanied by professional development and a cash prize. In the past, many of the selected exhibitors have gone on to a high profile career and elite programmes such as Hothouse supported by the Crafts Council. Therefore, the exhibition is a great collector opportunity to learn more about the stars of the future. The makers in this year’s shortlist are Ruth Brown, Emily Jane Bruce, Ellie Burton, AnneLaure Cano, Ella Fearon-Low, Tony Howard, Polly Middleton-Heatley, Valerie Muddyman, Teresa Munn, Alex O’Connor, Anna Peake, Rebecca Rowland-chandler, Joshua Schoeman, Claire Lucia Skelton, Mariam Syed, Mona Tabbicca, Emma Trussler, Louisa Warren, Kas Williams, Xuan Fang The shortlist was selected from more than 50 applications. The selectors were Rebecca Skeels, Post Graduate Subject & Senior Tutor for University of Creative Arts Farnham; Gemma Curtis, Craft Programme Co-ordinator, Farnham Maltings and Victoria Shearing, Gallery Director, New Ashgate Gallery. Opportunities such as Rising Stars are needed more than ever, as arts funding is being questioned and some art organisations focus on established names that are less risky than presenting recent graduates or students. The winner of the Rising Stars Professional Development Award will be announced in the Rising Stars private view on 3 March and she/he will receive a cash prize and a solo exhibition in the gallery. We hope that this will have a significant impact on the winner’s career. The exhibition also has a free-to-attend professional development programme that supports all emerging artists and makers – the participants of this exhibition and all regional new talent. The programme is supported by the Billmeir Charitable Trust. It is organised in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts. Give Your Dog A Break! Do dogs need holidays too? Your pooch might be more stressed out than you think…

Y

ou’ve enough clothes to deal with whatever the British weather throws at you. There’s distracting gizmos galore to keep the cries of “are we there yet?” to an absolute minimum. The satnav is locked and loaded to the scenic route option. But hold on: something’s missing. You’ve left your faithful hound behind! Imagine your poor pooch’s consternation as they stare back through the bars of the kennel door, as they’re locked in for a two-week stretch in the canine clink. “It’s a case of mistaken identity,” they’d cry, “it’s The Pawshank Redemption.” Dogs reduce our stress. People who have pets tend to have lower blood pressure, heart rate and heart-disease risk than those who don’t. Providing motivation for regular exercise and the relief of having a steadfast friend also do wonders for our health. Shouldn’t we repay the favour? Not only that, but the benefits of taking your dog on holiday in the UK are clear to see.

R&R Dogs might not have tight work deadlines or bills to pay, but they can easily pick up on our own stressed-out habits when they spend as much time with us as they do. They love to be around owners at their most relaxed, so accompanying us on our holidays is great for their well-being. When we’re happy, relaxed and having fun, that rubs off on to our furry friends.

Staying in Shape We’re always far more active on holiday, so why wouldn’t you take the most lively member of the family along with you? On top of that, 60% of vets say obesity is the biggest healthcare concern for UK pets, according to figures released by the British Veterinary 32 MARCH 2018

Association. It’s the perfect excuse to get out and get active with your dog.

New experiences Of course, exercise isn’t the only benefit of taking your pooch along with you; getting your dog’s brain working is great for their health too. Your pup will love experiencing a whole new heap of sights, smells and socialising opportunities.

It’s even better for you No strops, no staring at their phone and always up for fun: dogs are the perfect travelling companion. And no one can forget about the savings you’ll make by not having to shell out for expensive kennels or dog-sitting services. With PetsPyjamas, you can organise your perfect, dog-friendly holiday in the UK. Dogs go free and you’ll even get a special welcome box when you arrive. The importance of an all-through school education

A

ll-through schools combine at least two stages of a child’s education. Within the independent sector this typically involves a combination of Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 2), Prep (up to 13 Years) and Senior School (up to A Level). In some cases, the full age range is included from Nursery, the different phases sharing one site, zoned ageappropriately. This provides the powerful advantage of accumulated benefits over the years, with a longterm perspective of a child’s educational journey in full focus, every step of the way.

The learning journey Providing education over multiple phases allows for secure transitions in a familiar environment. The school can forge longer term relationships with pupils, pastorally and as learners, with the continuity of a consistent educational ethos. Moving through the school with an established friendship group, familiarity with staff and routines, avoids the disruption of moving schools. If there is a requirement for a child to convert from day to boarding, doing so in an environment which is already familiar and secure is most effective.

One-stop shared facilities Where schools are based on the same site, younger pupils benefit from specialist senior facilities, such as in sports, science, languages and the arts. Specialist teachers can have an input in the lower years, in lessons and after school activity options. For parents with several children, the logistics of one school looking after different age groups of learning and clubs makes a great deal of sense. 38 MARCH 2018

Seamless curriculum and leadership vision Cohesive planning across the school phases can create a seamless curriculum, adding value at each level. All-through schools often have a more diverse senior leadership team than a single school, with specialist heads of Prep and Senior pooling their expertise and experience to support the entire age range, within a single vision for the school as a whole. Continuity is key. Greg Meakin is Head of Prep at Sherfield School, a co-educational day and boarding all-through school (Nursery to Sixth Form), located between Basingstoke and Reading. Mr David North, one of our founder residents, answered the following questions 1/Moving to a care home can actually give many people a new lease of life – how has your life changed since moving? Tremendously, it has taken away the hassles of living by myself at home. I no longer need to worry about cooking, cleaning, shopping or bills. As well as all of this my days are now filled with a variety of activities with new friends. 2/Can you tell us a little more about your accommodation?  I chose a delightful spacious studio apartment with patio doors on to the garden. I have a kitchenette with tea and coffee making facilities and a small fridge to keep my milk and snacks! There is a non slip wet room with a heated towel rail. Most importantly I was able to bring my own furniture which means it feels more like home. 3/What does a normal day consist of ?  Every day is different, from morning exercise classes, trips out in the mini bus (last week I went to Windsor and stopped at a country pub for a pint) and gardening club. There is also a cinema with nightly screenings which is fabulous! They even took me to Ascot Races! 4/What attracted you to Signature at Ascot Grange? The spacious accommodation and beautiful grounds. I love sitting on my patio with a morning coffee or taking a gentle stroll around the garden. 5/How would you describe your relationship with the staff ?  Excellent, nothing is too big for anyone – from restaurant to activities, maintenance to housekeeping and of course the fabulous nurses and carers. 6/If you could sum up Signature at Ascot Grange in a sentence, what would it be?  A five star hotel!

“Scientific studies have shown that HA fillers can stimulate the formation of healthy skin tissue and new collagen”

Dermal Fillers: Friend or Foe?

Cosmetic specialist, Dr Peter Forrester answers some questions and clears up some misunderstandings about dermal filers. What are dermal fillers?

Are dermal fillers safe?

The term Dermal Filler refers to a group of injectable clear gels designed to lift and plump skin. They are commonly based on hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in many body tissues including the skin where it has important functions maintaining structure and hydration. HA binds to water in the skin, locking in moisture. As we get older the amount of hyaluronic acid in skin gradually diminishes which in part is responsible for many of the appearances of skin ageing.

Restylane was the first HA filler and has been in use for over 20 years. Since introduction HA filers have been used tens of millions of times. Hence, we now know a great deal about both their benefits and safety. Because the HA in fillers is very similar to the HA that exits naturally under the skin they are very well tolerated with a minimal chance of allergic reactions. Infrequently inflammatory reactions can occur resulting areas of swelling or firmness. These usually settle without treatment but can be resolved by the use of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves HA. It should be stressed that in the right hands dermal fillers are very safe. They should only be used by properly qualified and experienced healthcare professionals.

Will it be obvious that I have had a filler treatment or will I look pumped up? Images in the media of hugely plumped lips and cheeks and the so-called trout-pout have given HA dermal fillers an undeservedly bad reputation. Correctly used they will result in a natural and rejuvenating appearance with no risk of an over-treated look. The paradox of filler treatments is this, when they are obviously over-done everybody notices but when properly used the results are subtle. People see the ‘bad’ ones but don’t notice the ‘good’ ones – this leads to a belief that all filler treatments will produce a bad result.

What areas can be treated with fillers? Fillers can be used to: • replace lost volume in cheeks and lips • reduce deep and fine surface lines including smokers lines around the mouth • lift the jowls • stimulate and hydrate the skin

How long do HA fillers last? Injected hyaluronic acid is slowly broken down in the body. The beneficial effects of a treatment can be expected to last for up to 12 months. However, this will depend on a number of factors including patient age, area treated, quantity of filler injected, skin quality, general health and lifestyle including smoking. It was once believed that once all the hyaluronic acid had been broken down it would have no further benefit. However scientific studies have shown that HA fillers can stimulate the formation of healthy skin tissue and new collagen. This boost to the body’s own collagen may help to explain why smaller volumes of filler are often required during top up treatments and why some people seem to derive significant benefit for 18 months or longer.

Dr. Peter Forrester and Ms. Helen McEvoy offer: Non Surgical Treatments • Anti-wrinkle Injections - reduce frown lines and crow’s feet. • Dermal Fillers - smooth deeper lines and furrows as well as returning lost volume to the face. • Thread Lift - minimally invasive procedure where surgical threads are used to lift and support cheeks, jowls and neck. • Facial Peels - helps to return a healthy glow to dull tired skin. The State-Of-The-Art Low-Down Tummy Tuck and Mini Tummy Tuck Surgery

In Conversation with Mr Fulvio Urso-Baiarda a consultant plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon with an architectural skill in ensuring the very best results for his patients.

I

ncorporating the very best techniques, Mr Fulvio Urso-Baiarda has been praised by his peers and patients for not only his exceptionally discreet low scarring methods in Tummy Tuck Surgery but also his unrivalled results. The talented Surgeon is leading the way in body confidence procedures, in this exclusive interview he reveals more about his admired approach to Tummy Tuck Surgery. Tell us some more about ‘the low-down’ Tummy Tuck? This refers to a tummy tuck making use of a very low scar, which is hidden by underwear or swimwear. This sounds like an obvious thing to do but traditionally low scars have been avoided because it is necessary to remove more abdominal skin to achieve them (it’s a more difficult technique for surgeons) This in turn it has been felt by surgeons to result in the scar pulling back up after surgery. In fact, the low-down technique places the scar even lower, in ‘fixed skin’ rather than ‘mobile skin’, preventing the scar from creeping back up after surgery. To see the difference between fixed and mobile skin here’s something you can try yourself - you might want to find a private room! Pinch the skin towards the outside of your tummy and pull it

48 MARCH 2018

upwards – it will probably move an inch or more. Now go lower into your groin crease and try to pull that skin upwards. You will find that it hardly moves at all. That makes it a good place to anchor the tummy tuck scar, where it is both inconspicuous and unlikely to move upwards too much after surgery. You have been openly praised for your technique, can you tell us more about why it is better than other techniques? A tummy should be beautiful, and there is much more involved than simply the removal of loose skin with a low scar. Tummies should have curves and contours rather than looking like a flat tight sheet, and it is important to create or enhance those contours as part of a tummy tuck. So, as part of a beautiful tummy tuck, a midline ridge is created by a combination of liposuction and stitching the midline down to the tummy muscles. A smoothly curving belly button region is made by fat debulking and shortening the belly button stalk, which also helps to hide any belly button scarring too. Muscle definition can be enhanced with careful liposuction, and the waist can be accentuated by liposuction of the flanks and tightening of the tummy muscles. The pubic area is often not given enough attention, but this too may benefit from being reduced or flattened.

“Mr Urso-Baiarda changed my life forever and it’s not just the surgery; it is the way he is. He actually cares about the person and what he is doing and he knows he is making lives so much better.’” – quote from a patient who underwent Tummy Tuck Surgery with Dr Urso-Baiarda

What results can a patient expect? As well as a more attractive tummy, improvement in back pain is often an unexpected benefit of tummy tuck surgery. Our tummy wall should form a ring of muscle (I tell patients that we are like squid!), which gives us a muscular tube for core support. If that ring is broken by separated tummy muscles – which is often the case after pregnancy, a period of weight gain or even just the way you are made – then instead core support has to come from the very strong muscles of the back. Eventually those back muscles start to feel the strain of doing all the work, and the result is a chronic back ache. Restoring the muscle ring helps share the load again, and patients frequently tell me that they feel more secure and comfortable after surgery as well as more confident in their appearance. What is the down-time for the procedure? Patients usually stay in hospital for two nights but are mobile from day one. They can usually get back to driving after a few weeks and back to officebased work in under a month. I advise a gentle return to exercise from six weeks. I also insist on a scar regime that usually keeps the scars soft and flat throughout the recovery period, but the scars will need to be protected from the sunlight until they have turned from red to pale, which could take up to a year. What advice do you give patients for ensuring safety in surgery? Firstly, make sure you and your surgeon form a good rapport, that your expectations for the outcome have been taken on board, and that you totally understand what the risks are and how they can be reduced. Maintain a healthy diet before and after surgery and try to avoid yo-yo weight changes. Be sure to always check your Surgeon’s credentials by logging onto the BAAPS / BAPRAS or GMC website.

THE MINI-TUMMY TUCK What is the ‘Mini Tummy Tuck’? A mini tummy tuck is an operation to remove excess fat and skin from the lower tummy and waist, but unlike a full tummy tuck it does not involve a scar around the belly button. Instead, the belly button is pulled downwards as a result of skin removal. Which patients are ideal for the Mini Tummy Tuck? It’s ideal for people who work out but can’t seem to shift that area of fat. The patient must have looseness of skin below the belly button without looseness above the belly button, and must also have quite little extra skin.

One of Mr Urso-Baiarda’s patients following a full (low down) tummy tuck.

Complimentary Mini Consultation * Enquire about availability quoting Eterno Tummy Tuck T : 01753 866826 W : eternoplasticsurgery.com

*Terms and Conditions Free mini consultations are 10 minutes in duration with Mr Urso-Baiarda. Limited spaces available and are allocated on a first come, first served basis. One mini consultation per person. Offer to be taken by 30th September 2018. Location to be advised by Eterno Plastic Surgery at the time of booking. On booking please quote the code ‘Eterno Tummy Tuck’.

What results can a patient expect? After surgery the skin of the abdomen is much tighter than before. As well as there being no belly button scar, the transverse scar is extremely low – even lower than that of a ‘low-down’ tummy tuck. What is the down-time? Down-time is quicker than the more invasive procedure, with a return to work after a week and a return to exercise in three to four weeks. MARCH 2018 49

Eclectic

Style S

ince moving to Cobham six years ago Adaptations have gained an enviable reputation for their contemporary kitchen designs. Working with German furniture brands such Rotpunkt and Eggersmann they offer a wide range of styles and finishes to suit most budgets including matt and gloss lacquers, textured laminates and saw cut veneers which they mix together to create beautiful eclectic designs. Several years ago they introduced their very own unique bespoke range of furniture made from reclaimed Oak. These beautiful freestanding pieces are individually hand built by experienced craftsmen using reclaimed rustic Oak and come complete with splits and knots and other imperfections resulting in each and every island being totally unique. They can also be stained with an ebony stain to create a more dramatic effect. Adaptations integrate these pieces effortlessly into their client’s designs mixing them with contemporary matt lacquered furniture to create truly individual and eclectic designs. The oak, which is sourced from the Kentucky in the US, was originally used as ranch and railway fencing. It then has to go through several processes before it can be planned and prepared prior to being made into these individual pieces of furniture. The worktops are available in a range of contemporary materials such as Neolith and Dekton in addition to natural stone options including granite and marble and are offered in a wide selection colours, thicknesses and textures. Adaptations also have a wide selection of

Stylish flooring ideas for your bathroom Finding the perfect floor design for your bathroom will add the finishing touch to your brand new look. A bathroom floor needs to be both durable and stylish to meet all of your needs and should give your bathroom a strong and solid foundation.

W

ith so much choice available, it can be hard to decide on one option. Take into consideration your daily routine and lifestyle: Do you have children who will need a slip-free and hardwearing floor? Or do you have a glamorous and grown-up bathroom suite that requires an equally chic floor? Don’t be afraid to try unusual materials, such as wood, which can work well in a bathroom, despite any concerns you might have about the humid conditions affecting the wood. Try hardwood, laminate or PVC flooring to get the same effect, but without the damp results. Floors in marble, granite or polished concrete will also create a dramatic effect and lend a chic, polished finish to your bathroom. These are all hard-wearing materials that will look stunning and last for years. For something truly unique, try cork or rubber. Popular in the 1960s and 1970s, cork is back in a big way and is one of the most eco-friendly floor options around. Rubber is warm, waterproof and easy to keep clean, so a great option for anyone with children. Solid

58 MARCH 2018

wood or laminate floors aren’t usually suitable for bathrooms as the humidity will cause the material to discolour, swell and warp. But hardwood floorings, such as teak and bamboo, can work well (doublecheck with the manufacturer first) and engineered wood and bathroom-specific laminate - made with PVC - are designed to withstand moisture.

Eco-friendly kitchens Ten ways to go green USE RECYCLED STEEL AND GLASS Stainless steel and glass not only look stunning, but also reduce the footprint you leave on the planet. Stainless-steel sinks are generally made from up to 70% recycled material. Recycled glass worktops are hardwearing and have anti-bacterial protection, so are perfect for a busy kitchen. CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE TIMBER For a country kitchen that’s as eco-friendly as it is stylish, go for units, flooring and worktops made with Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood - this means the timber comes from sustainable sources. TURN OFF YOUR APPLIANCES Keeping your kitchen appliances on standby wastes energy. Turn them off manually or get yourself a standby saver that automatically switches off all appliances when they are not in use RECYCLE Recycling is key to saving the planet, but it can be a hassle. Make it easier by creating a dedicated recycling area with a range of stylish bins for different types of kitchen waste. GO FOR GREEN CLEANING Cleaning products can considerably expand your ecological footprint. Switch to eco-friendly products instead and consider making your own from no-impact kitchen staples, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. TRY SALVAGE CHIC Upcycling furniture and accessories is a great way to add vintage style to your kitchen and reduce your impact on the environment. Use reclaimed materials from salvage yards for flooring and have kitchen cabinets made from reclaimed timber. 64 MARCH 2018

PAINT IT GREEN Always choose eco-friendly, water-based kitchen paints made of natural ingredients, with no solvents and low or no Volatile Organic Compounds OPT FOR NATURAL, HARDWEARING FLOORS Made of linseed oil and pine resin - both sustainable materials - linoleum is also warm under your feet and very hardwearing. Other eco-friendly alternatives include bamboo and cork SAVE WATER Kitchen appliances can use up a lot of water. Choose an efficient washing machine to reduce waste and run it on full load for optimum efficiency. MIND THE DISHWASHER The latest generation of green dishwashers will consume significantly less energy and water than older models. Always run them at full load: the half-load setting uses more than half the energy and water used on a full load. Choose a small model if there aren’t many of you in the house.

Illustrate Kitchens celebrating three year anniversary I

llustrate Kitchens is looking forward to celebrating its third year in business this spring and continuing to strengthen its position as Guildford’s most progressive and exciting kitchen showroom. This rapid growth is attributed to the experienced and dynamic directorship of father and son duo, Percy and Darren Contractor. With 49 years of combined experience working within the kitchen industry, they have grown the company from two people to a staff of seven, and currently looking to fill further roles. Illustrate Kitchens is a premium retailer for the world’s finest kitchen brands, such as Aster Cucine, an Italian company that amalgamates the most unorthodox material combinations into stunning kitchen furniture, and Gaggenau, one of the worlds most advanced and cutting edge appliance manufacturers. Both directors cite their obsession with design as a key difference in their business. Darren comments ‘Our philosophy is to design a kitchen that utilises a space to its most dramatic effect. Most of our clients tell us that they tried a few companies and received similar and reasonable designs. When they see our ideas, their reaction is that of surprise and genuine admiration that we can turn their kitchen into a genuine show-stopper.’ It is this reputation that has seen Illustrate Kitchens called out as far afield as Oxfordshire, West Sussex and Hampshire. Darren continues, ‘We are well known within the Surrey, London and of course Guildford as the firm to call if you want the most original design, and we are very proud and honoured that this reputation is expanding further afield.’

“Our philosophy is to design a kitchen that utilises a space to its most dramatic effect” Kitchen projects are managed in-house by a dedicated team consisting of a full-time installation manager and a full time fitter. Percy has worked in this industry for almost four decades and knows that replacement kitchen projects can be stressful. ‘A replacement kitchen can cause significant disturbance in what is normally the most important room in a house. We make sure the whole process is planned to perfection and will seamlessly move your project from the design phase, to installation, to handing over the finished kitchen to you.’ Illustrate Kitchens also holds great respect with architects and developers. Percy has a background in architecture and comments ‘A great deal of our work is instigated by architects or developers, who either approach us directly or recommend their clients to use us. www.illustratekitchens.com 72 MARCH 2018

Innovative ceramics – Washbasins made from TitanCeram The renowned designer Patrick Frey exploited the excellent material properties of TitanCeram in creating Finion. “I took full advantage of the benefits of TitanCeram for the flowing, strongly contoured design of the washbasins as this material allowed me to make very thin and fine forms.” It resulted in ten 76 MARCH 2018

ceramic washbasin models whereby the wall-mounted and surface-mounted washbasins have walls that are only 6 mm thick. The collection has surfacemounted, wall-mounted and vanity washbasins, ranging from a compact hand washbasin that is 43 cm wide to a spacious 130 cm double washbasin, therefore providing a perfect washbasin solution for all tastes and almost any room layout – from small guest bathrooms to roomy well-being oases. Authentic, Unique Bespoke Kitchens

C

harlie Kingham’s bespoke kitchens and furniture offer is aimed at helping you create your dream project. Tailoring each project to reflect a truly authentic design, he tackles and solves issues that arise in our modern lives, homes and kitchens, without compromising quality and aesthetics. The Charlie Kingham team have perfected their design process. After receiving the clients brief, they put together a wonderfully realistic set of 3D renders so you can envisage exactly what the finished project will look like. Once the designs are signed off, your kitchen will be completed and in your home ready to use in under twelve weeks. They have three collections of kitchen styles that vary from classic and simple to a more edgier and industrial feel. Whether it is a simple kitchen to fit in a traditional farmhouse in the country or a georgian townhouse in the city that needs a more detailed kitchen to suit the architecture, Charlie Kingham are confident they will produce an authentic, unique and bespoke kitchen that will compliment and complete your home. Despite only having two showrooms, they have completed projects all over the world, from south London to the south of France. Even though they may come across as traditional kitchen designers they have a much more versatile back catalogue, due to their work being truly bespoke. It is tricky to show what work you can achieve when you can design and produce absolutely anything. From standalone pieces for an awkward space to a full kitchen refurbishment and cabinetry throughout your home, they are up for the challenge. Proving they are more than just traditional cabinet makers, the Charlie Kingham team have taken on contemporary kitchen styles. Even though it may not be advertised all over their website and showrooms, this has naturally become their hidden talent. This kitchen breaks the conventions of a traditional shaker by building from modern minimalism and incorporating natural material finishes. A contrast in concept but the mix of linen and leather textures will continue to look timeless yet contemporary. Below is another modern kitchen that challenges the typically overdone all white look. The sleek lines and curved corners help this small space look bigger and brighter. This is complemented by the Carrera Marble worktop, proving that even a minimalistic kitchen can be full of some brilliantly designed details. 8 Chertsey Street, Guildford, GU1 4HD Telephone 01483 338888 www.charliekingham.co.uk

3 steps to your dream kitchen with Tara Neil Making your dream kitchen happen is what Tara Neil Kitchens is all about, and the 3-step process they use will ensure that your vision becomes a reality. 80 MARCH 2018

THE CONSULTATION The first step to creating a truly unique interior is dialogue. You can meet one of the Tara Neil designers at their inspiring 4,000 sq. ft. showroom in Woodley, Reading, or in your home, to discuss your project further. During this initial consultation, your designer will ask you about your project, lifestyle, timescale and budget, and will compile an outline design brief. At this stage, they will work from your architects’ plans or undertake their own on-site survey to obtain the relevant architectural information and room dimensions. This is a service that, unlike with some other companies, is always free at Tara Neil Kitchens.

THE DESIGN Once your designer has established your brief, the next step is to create a draft proposal of floor plans and elevations, along with an initial estimate for the project. This is normally produced within 2-3 days of the consultation. You will then be invited for a second appointment in the showroom to discuss the design and costs in more detail. This also gives you the opportunity to inspect

the finer details of the design proposals from the impressive selection of samples and full kitchen displays. Tara Neil’s in-house interior designer will also be on hand to advise and inspire. Once the final design and costs are agreed, you will be asked to pay a commissioning deposit. At this point your designer will produce the relevant service drawings, as well as securing a delivery slot for your furniture.

THE INSTALLATION The team at Tara Neil know that the upheaval involved in undertaking any kind of refurbishment to your home can be a nuisance, but it never needs to be a source of stress. Communication and organisation are vital to successful project management and your designer will manage your project from initial design to final installation. Tara Neil employs a team of dedicated professionals who have overseen many installations with the minimum of disruption (as their testimonials attest), including a full-time project manager with 22-years’ experience in large housing developments. The project manager and your designer will liaise with your architect or building contractor regularly to ensure everything is running according to plan. Once the project is complete, both the designer and project manager will meet with you on site to review the finished project. If you already have a builder or kitchen fitter that you would like to use then they can offer supply only. www.taraneil.com; 01189 698500

G oing green for spring be omitted. Finally, the spring meadow shimmers with colourful petals of flowers. Green is best complemented by white backgrounds or patterns and all shades of yellow and pink. Flowers, and above all greenery are universal decorations, because the impression they create never overwhelms, on the contrary - it brings freshness and soothes the senses. The salutary power of nature also works through the walls, so it is worth decorating the bedroom, the living room, as well as the kitchen and the dining room with greenery, to enjoy the positive energy prevailing throughout the house. www.pixers.uk

pring favours all changes. Nature comes to life, and the world becomes more beautiful each day - flowers and bushes bloom and the meadows and parks finally become green. The days get longer, we have more energy and ideas. No wonder we give ourselves to the ritual of spring cleaning and renovations. We want our homes to be as beautiful as the spring landscape! Wallpapers inspired by the awakening nature is the best way to welcome spring. On this occasion, Pixers have arranged compositions, which are characterised by floral patterns and leaf motifs as well as delicate, refreshing colours. The spring palette is primarily all about green. Pastels and subdued colours dominate, broken with a juicy shade of young leaves and fresh blades of grass. Fabulous floors from Turgon

As we enter the New Year, and new interior design trends emerge, we are left undecided as to which bits of furniture to keep that we recently purchased. Typical.

W

ell, we can tell you one thing. Your wooden floors going nowhere. Your furniture may change, and you can dabble all you want with colour schemes for walls etc. but your wooden floors going nowhere. The interior industry experts tell us that the interior fashion is leaving the minimalist Scandinavian features behind, and we are moving forward maximalism and rich earthy colours. And nothing else shows the natural earth tones better then a wooden floor. Just like everything else in the interior design industry, the wooden floors market will change its shape and tones as well. As predicted, in contrast with previous years where we used to see more pale white and deep grey tones and mostly planks, the future shows rather a different trend. We are going back to classic wood patterns and designs. This tells we will be looking at more herringbones , chevron and custom made 90 MARCH 2018

patterns. The bright side of this trend is, it will last forever, because classic doesn’t mean boring and these floors have shown their uniqueness since forever. They will never be out of trend, you just have to play around with the colours. Talking about colours, the future seems bright, rich and colourful. Even though the natural tone of the wood will remain the most famous, we are happy to see more rich tones such as orange brown that give that warm heritage that we’ve been missing. Walnut, cherry and natural oak are already trending. This year we will be seeing more reclaimed wooden floors. Recently we have discovered historic reclaimed woods that have been on the bogs for thousand of years, and they have shown to be a perfect reclaimed wood solution for the future because of their strength and density. Once again, keep your wooden floor, they will last forever in fashion. www.turgonflooring.co.uk

A MUSIC ROOM WITH A VIEW

THE DETAILS Contact Paul on T: 020 8669 1500 E: Paul@castlecon.com www.castleconservatories.com

Paul Jones from Castle Conservatories, Surrey and London’s premier design and build company, talks about enhancing your property with an elegant orangery and gives us his insight into a specific project that Castle have built recently in Surrey

S

o, what does an orangery do? Designed to replace the more traditional, predominantly glazed conservatory, an orangery combines the feel of an extension with the light and airiness of a more traditional garden room. It can greatly extend your living area and becomes a versatile space that can be used all year round. Many of our clients, when

they approach us to discuss their requirements, do so because they love the home they live in. An orangery is a way to extend their property and we have designed many builds that have been used to enlarge a kitchen/dining area, become a playroom or study, or have simply allowed them to open the back of their homes to let the light flood in with our state of the art roofing solutions. About the Project For Mr & Mrs Holmes the brief was to create a stunning music room to house their grand piano and organ. Design was extremely important as the build needed to be sympathetic to their instrument collection and allow them to maintain an even temperature to facilitate that but also give them a space that they could use as a practise room to enjoy playing music all year round. Installing two sets of double doors means the orangery can be opened and flow into the garden in the Summer whilst with the installation of a lantern roof light floods into the property all year round making it a bright and airy place to enjoy and use, even in winter months. The insulated perimeter aids with keeping the temperature balanced and allows for the discreet additional lighting we installed whilst the exterior was designed to compliment and reflect the original property with attention to detail in flooring and stonework throughout. Step access to the garden was designed to be aesthetic and visually sympathetic to the existing lines of the property giving a feeling of flow and connectivity from the original property through the new build and out into the garden. “I have been delighted by the service and quality I received from Castle. The build was well organised and skilled and the quality of workmanship superb. I now have a fabulous music room which houses a grand piano and an organ and remains at a constant temperature ...so important for keeping the piano in tune. There is lovely light through the orangery roof and it’s the most used and best room in the house. Thanks to all the team at Castle. You are the best in the business!” – Mr Holmes, Epsom. THE GREYSTONES

“Each house is some 600m2 spread over 3 floors, which negotiate the changing levels of the site”

L

ocated in the centre of Radlett this exclusive area has generous house plots with generally substantial houses. Our site previously housed a single bungalow of no historical or architectural note. Our clients brief was to demolish the existing house and replace this with 2 generous houses, one of which to become their new house, the other to sell on. Each house is some 600m2 spread over 3 floors, which negotiate the changing levels of the site. As such the first floor from the front approach leads you through to the rear garden level. The highly contemporary properties respond to the surroundings utilising white render, but in simple modernist forms with timber cladding and elegant glazing systems, which create a delicate blend of privacy and views. The Greystone houses were shortlisted for the Hertfordshire Building Futures Awards 2011. The judges commented: “the Greystones houses are a perfect example of how sustainable design can be intertwined effectively with modern amenities in a domestic setting.” www.nicolastyearchitects.co.uk
