WEST HORSLEY PLACE JOINS THE GLADRAGS PROJECT W

est Horsley Place is inviting members of the local community to help create an artwork that explores ‘what makes us glad right now’. Devised by local artist Diana Burch in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the GladRags project asks local residents – including children - to create a small patchwork square that captures ‘what makes you feel glad’. Everyone is invited to take part, making use of what can be found at home, from rags to remnants. Once the current lockdown has been lifted, these patchwork squares will be collected by West Horsley Place and will be brought together to make a large artwork that will be a record of how the local community came through this extraordinary time. Launched in Haslemere in partnership with Haslemere Museum, the GladRags project is now being rolled out across the county. West Horsley Place is delighted to be helping residents of Guildford and the surrounding area to take part. Commenting, Diana Burch said: “Coronavirus is a huge event in human history. The GladRags project wants to step in as history is made and provide a community record of how we came through isolation and learned to value the little things, the things that make us glad right now.” “Creativity is a wonderful way to relax, focus and build self-esteem – and is very much needed at the current time. Every square will be welcomed – regardless of classic needlework skills!” “I want to thank the cultural hubs and museums

10 JUNE 2020

that are enabling this project to take place. When this is all over, we can all get together to celebrate creativity and community spirit once more.” Clare Clinton, Operations Manager at West Horsley Place, adds: “We are delighted to be taking part in the GladRags project with our local community. By reflecting on what makes us glad despite this difficult time we will create a patchwork that will be a celebration of our community’s resilience.”

“Our charity remains committed to creating here a welcoming space for the community to share and enjoy with arts, culture, community, history and nature at its heart” “We were so looking forward to opening the doors of West Horsley Place this spring. Although this has been delayed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, our charity remains committed to creating here a welcoming space for the community to share and enjoy with arts, culture, community, history and nature at its heart.” “Until we can be together, we look forward to seeing pictures of your wonderful patchworks which we will share for everyone to enjoy.”

How to Take Part This is for everyone. All ages and all abilities. Participants are asked to create a 15cm square, with a small extra allowance for a border so that the patchworks can be stitched together, using any material available. This might be a remnant, an odd sock – or a rag. Decorate the square to reflect WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL GLAD using thread, glue, buttons and bits and bobs accessible at this time. For participants who would like to share their patchworks now, please email a photograph to info@westhorsleyplace.org Photos will be shared on the West Horsley Place website and through the charity’s social media channels. Monaco Yacht Show 2020 A Superyacht Industry Support Show. September 23 – 26, 2020, Port Hercule, Monaco

T

he Principality of Monaco and Informa have announced a secure, not-for-profit event in 2020 They have confirmed they are working together to deliver an intimate, not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in Port Hercule in September 2020, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks. The proposed event will employ the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and be dedicated to supporting the speedy recovery of the industry post COVID-19, providing an invaluable platform for designers, brokers, shipyards and other key players within the yachting industry to connect with their customers and share ideas in a safe environment.

Return & Recovery post the COVID-19 Pandemic Like most industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a marked impact on the international yachting community, with many businesses temporarily closed and staff furloughed, and the usual annual cycle of industry activity severely disrupted. As countries and locations around the world gradually relax lockdown restrictions and ease control measures, it is imperative that the superyacht community is supported in every way possible to help the industry return and recover safely and quickly.

The 30th Monaco Yacht Show in September 2020 With this in mind, The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020. This year’s Monaco Yacht Show is scheduled from 23 to 26 September. With control measures steadily being relaxed in Monaco, around Europe and internationally, on current course and speed, this should allow for a carefully staged event to still take place this year. Therefore, it is our intention to retain these dates for the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show and work with

14 JUNE 2020

suppliers and local authorities over the coming weeks to confirm full details of the event. In the spirit of the history and position of the event within the superyacht industry, the 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be run on a not-for-profit basis, recognizing the challenges facing everyone post the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, providing direct support to all attendees and exhibitors from across the market. Whilst the intimate nature of the 2020 event will prioritize the safety of participants, both Informa and the Monaco Principality are committed to ensuring the quality of the event and show experience is maintained for everyone. Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive, Informa Markets (organiser of the Monaco Yacht Show) said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on all industries, not least the international yachting community. As we move to the other side of the pandemic, all parts of the industry need to work collaboratively to ensure a speedy return and recovery. We are playing our part by hosting a notfor-profit Monaco Yacht Show in 2020, providing an opportunity for the community to come together, share ideas, meet with customers and start to rebuild positive momentum.” www.monacoyachtshow.com

The gin is described as being a refreshing mix of lemon balm, lovage and a hint of shredded rhubarb and is available for delivery by volunteers within certain postcodes around Kingston upon Thames and Guildford. The 158-acre Painshill has been closed for last few months due to the pandemic and it is hoped that sales of the gin will help the independently-run park and gardens to survive.

Get Growing With Warner’s Gin Reconnect with Mother Nature thanks to the gin farmers at Warner’s and their epic new ‘Get Growing’ Kits

N

orthamptonshire-based gin farmers, Warner’s, have launched new ‘Get Growing’ kits, to help bring the outside in for all their customers. These gardening sets, which include coir compost pellets and biodegradable pots, along with wildflower and lemon balm seed packets, will be gifted with every home delivery ordered from the Falls Farm distillery to inspire customers to have fun planting at home. Warner’s have a deep love of nature and want to share this joy with their gin fans and help them celebrate Mother Nature in their homes. Wildflowers and lemon balm are particular favourites of our precious bees. Lemon balm also makes a fabulous garnish – so you can give back to nature while enhancing G&Ts and cocktails. Ahead of World Bee Day (20th May), there’s never been a better time to get growing at home – and as these kits can be placed on a windowsill or any sunny area in the home, everyone can get involved, regardless of their outdoor space. Warner’s are entirely self-sufficient in lemon balm, along with lemon thyme and verbena, which are the three core ingredients in their awardwinning Lemon Balm Gin – this zesty variant recently won its third gold medal in nine

22 JUNE 2020

months, following the results of the internationallyrenowned San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Warner’s currently grow over 25% of their own ingredients across their five acres of botanical gardens and are constantly aiming to increase selfsufficiency for their all-natural variants – including in angelica and lavender in the near future. Explains Warner’s founder, Tom Warner: “We’ve always looked to nature for inspiration for our allnatural gins, capturing the outside in every bottle. We know that stepping outside into the countryside and connecting with nature is good for the soul, as is being creative. We aim to give back more than we take – to resow, replant and rebuild – and we want to share this passion with our amazing customers – even, if right now, it’s embraced in our own homes. “These kits are great for helping out the bees in your neighbourhood – we always leave a portion of the herbs used to make our Lemon Balm Gin especially for our buzzy friends as lemon balm is one of their favourite plants in our garden. They can be used in the smallest of spaces so everyone can get involved and help bring the outside in. Use your home-grown herbs to create a Lemon Balm Smash (check out our website for the recipe) and join us in a toast to celebrate the best of what nature has to offer – cheers!” Warner’s have a strong track record in sharing their love of nature with their customers and have already gifted over 100,000 packets of wildflower seeds with their Honeybee Gin over the last few years to encourage customers to get planting at home. This forms part of their award-winning Project Honeybee; last year Warner’s won the Stakeholder Engagement Award beating drinks Goliath Budweiser, at The Footprint Drinks Sustainability Awards. Other initiatives to help Britain’s bees include taking 400,000 Warner’s Falls Farm bees on holiday to RHS Garden Wisley and creating bee ‘hotels’ around the country. www.warnersdistillery.com

For those looking for further inspiration on how to improve your outdoor space, Warner’s have further tips on how you can help Britain’s pollinators: • Create a wildflower meadow in your garden to help support insects and other wildlife, providing a food source throughout the different seasons • Other herbs to plant include mint, rosemary, sage and thyme. Not only do bees love them, they are great for cooking with – and make excellent garnishes for a G&T! • Place a bee hotel in the garden for solitary bees. These bees don’t live in hives, but pollinate many crops – including the botanicals used to make gins. You can purchase a Warner’s bee hotel direct from the gin farmers

CAPTAIN TOM MOORE ON THE SECRET TO LIVING A

LONG AND HAPPY LIFE

Liz Connor speaks to the 100-year-old war veteran about how his love for walking and his eternal optimism have kept both his mind and spirit young.

W

hen Captain Tom Moore embarked on a personal challenge to complete 100 laps of the garden in his Bedfordshire home before his 100th birthday, he was hoping he might garner enough local support to raise a modest £1,000 for the NHS. What happened next, his daughter Hannah recalls, was ‘unimaginable’. Clutching his walking frame for support and proudly wearing his WW2 medals, the war veteran’s steely determination to keep lapping his garden, come rain or shine, quickly captured the hearts of well-wishers worldwide. Donations, tributes and national news interviews poured in. By the time his 100th birthday (marked with a Spitfire flyover and more than 120,000 cards from fans around the globe) came around, Captain Moore’s status as a national hero was cemented. His JustGiving page has raised an incredible £32 million in donations, while the charity single he released with Michael Ball made him the oldest artist to claim a UK No 1. “I had no idea it would be that popular,” says 30 JUNE 2020

“As I walk, I often think about the [lyrics to the song] Michael Ball and I released, ‘walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart’. As the kind people kept donating and donating, not just locally, but throughout the world, I kept going. It was the reason why I go on walking and enjoy every step.”

Captain Moore of his fundraising effort. “It was just [an idea] within the family initially - walking up and down for exercise - but then it just grew and grew.” “We’re just an ordinary family really. We knew we had a lovely story to share, and we shared it with the world willingly,” says Hannah, who initially put together a short press release about her father’s charity walk, which was in tribute to the NHS nurses who cared for him after he fractured his hip two years ago. “We thought that maybe local radio that would be interested and that it would be great to raise a thousand pounds. The extraordinary journey we’ve gone through the last five or six weeks could never have been imagined.” Despite being 100, and having battled various health issues over the years, Moore says there was “no real hardship” in reaching his extended goal of 200 laps. In fact, he very much enjoyed the challenge. “The first lap was the hardest, but after that I just got used to it,” he says, with his trademark good humour. “As I walk, I often think about the [lyrics to the song] Michael Ball and I released, ‘walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart’. As the kind people kept donating and donating, not just locally, but throughout the world, I kept going. It was the reason why I go on walking and enjoy every step.” When it comes to living a long and happy life, Moore says it’s all about having the right mindset. “I think you’ve got to be optimistic; to think that things will get better.” “I don’t think anyone really thinks about [getting to 100],” he adds. “When I was 50, I never would have imagined that I was half way through my life. Now that I’m 100 though, it doesn’t feel any different from 99. I’m very pleased that I’ve got to this age though and it’s just a case of seeing how much longer I can hang on.” Staying fit and healthy seemingly comes naturally to him too, as his unflappable zest for life has kept both his mind and body young. “I’ve never been someone that’s sat around. All my life, from being a boy, I’ve always been active and doing things. Before I had trouble with my leg, I spent so much time in the garden. I weigh the same now as I did when I was 21.” Moore, who was born in 1920 in Keighley, Yorkshire, embarked on an apprenticeship as a Civil Engineer as a young man, but paused his studying at the age of 20, when he was conscripted to fight in World War Two. Joining the 8th Battalion of The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, the young soldier was stationed in Cornwall, where he helped to defend the coast from the threat of German invasion. Later, he was enlisted to India, taking a treacherous six week journey by sea, and he also served and fought on the Arakan in Burma, where he battled through jungle to reach the frontline by motorcycle, defending the British colony from the

Japanese. Did he ever fear for his life while fighting for his country? “I don’t think so,” he recalls. “When you’re in the army and you’re 20-years-old. you’re not thinking too much about being in danger. It’s part of the adventure of life. I don’t recall ever being frightened. Maybe I should have been! But we survived. “I look back on my service in the army as a very enjoyable time and I still think about it now. There was so much comradeship between us. If I was capable, I’d do the same thing all over again.” He continues to add: “I think things have changed considerably for young people. Before World War Two there was a certain degree of poverty and people were finding life very difficult. At the present time, people are still finding it difficult, but it’s not as hard now as it was then. We still need to continue this life with hope and think that tomorrow is going to be as good a day as possible. That’s always been my mantra.” Recently, Moore announced he will publish two books, one of which will be an autobiography, in support of his new charity, the Captain Tom Foundation. The second will be a children’s book. “I never thought anyone would be interested in my story and I certainly didn’t think it would ever go into print,” he chuckles. “I’m a bit frightened about telling all my secrets!” He continues: “I’m a very slow writer though, so maybe I need someone [to help] to speed [it] up a bit for me. “ I ask him what he thinks about the growing public petition for him to be awarded a knighthood for his valiant fundraising efforts. He laughs: “I think that’s an excellent idea, but I don’t think there’s the slightest chance that it’s going to happen. Sir Thomas Moore would sound very good, but don’t hold your breath!” As for his next goal? “I need to live a little bit longer, so I can read back all of these books I’m writing,” he jokes. LOCAL AWARD WINNERS British furniture and homeware brand Loaf win ‘store of the year – small format’ in the Retail Week Awards 2020 or their Guildford Showroom

L

oaf ’s Guildford Shack has been crowned Best Small Store of the Year at the prestigious Retail Week Awards 2020 beating Matalan, Tile Giant, Pandora and the Co-op. The Loaf Guildford team accepting their award Opened in March 2018, the Guildford Shack was the Brit-brand’s fourth showroom and was their first space outside of London. Situated in the Tunsgate Quarter, Guildford’s brilliant shopping destination right in the heart of the high street, the 5,000 square foot emporium has all the essentials for laid-back living. Loafers can take five in the mattress testing area, sit back on squishy sofas and ogle their loafingly lovely wares. As well as retro arcade games, a colouring station and a football table, there is also an old school-style ice cream parlour for big and little Loafers to enjoy. Loaf ’s Shack model is based on the brand’s laid-back culture. The Loaf team pride themselves on delivering outstanding customer experience and avoiding hard sell tactics. To see them perform so well on in-store sales is a real testament to the brilliant relationships that the Loafers build with customers who could otherwise easily order online. Judges praised the Guildford Shack’s innovation as a small space furniture retailer, saying “They are also proof that ‘online to physical’ can be done well. It’s not an easy thing to do, because you are not necessarily a good physical retailer if you are a good online retailer. Loaf is a good role model in this space because they have displayed fabulous human customer service.” They went on to say “Loaf really think about their customer journey – for example they offer ice cream to kids. They’ve thought about their customers and know them well, they realise that customers will stay there for a while if their kids are happy. It’s very simple but it can make all the difference.” Founded in 2008, Loaf has been one of the UK’s fastest growing furniture companies, reaching a turnover of £48m in 2018/2019, and qualifying for the ‘Virgin Fast Track 100’ four years in a row. Despite challenging economic headwinds Loaf continues to deliver strong growth and is on track to see a double digit rise in profits when their financial year comes to a close in March 2020.

Imagine feeling completely connected to your BREATH, BODY and MIND…

H

ow would this ‘inner trinity’ transform your life? Being connected, centred, grounded, controlled, empowered, calm, aware, present, and conscious of a deep sense of you, and of everything you have in your life being enough… are just a few of the benefits. Introducing wellness expert, Grace McGeehan, who specialises in these three elements, and teaches the tools and techniques to help you connect to your breath, body and mind. This is achieved through a range of wellness practices: Yoga Body and Breath Grace teaches weekly yoga classes. Before Co-vid19 lockdown these took place at Long Ditton Village Hall, but now she has taken to Zoom to teach live yoga. Her classes are held on: Monday 6.30 - 7.30pm, Tuesday 7.30 - 8.30am Wednesday 6.00 - 7.00pm, Friday 9.30 - 10.30am Her sessions focus on the importance of synchronising breathing with movement to activate the soothing, meditative qualities of yoga. She teaches a soft and gentle fluidity. Grace also teaches the restorative qualities of Yin Yoga, and the philosophy of holding far less yoga poses for longer periods of time. It’s a challenge in itself to just stop, be still, slow down and come away from the daily hubbub for an hour. Classes are definitely appropriate for beginners or advanced yogis looking to vary and deepen their practice. Grace also offers both one-to-one and corporate classes. Rapid Transformational Therapy Mind After graduating from the University of Exeter with a degree in Psychology, Grace qualified as a Rapid Transformational Therapist with the Marisa Peer School. This therapy has been globally recognised as one of the most effective treatments for lasting, permanent transformation. The reason this method is so successful is it reveals the absolute route cause of the presenting issue and it

44 JUNE 2020

“This therapy has been globally recognised as one of the most effective treatments for lasting, permanent transformation”

does this via hypnosis. Through hypnosis, the subconscious mind awakens and the conscious mind goes to sleep i.e. your thinking mind. It’s in the subconscious mind that we hold memories from childhood and earlier life that may have been suppressed or completely forgotten. It’s important to review these memories, in order to understand WHY and HOW they have manifested in today’s problem. It might be over eating, drinking too much, addiction to smoking, depression, anxiety, detachment, not feeling worthy, it may every be a physical issue like eczema, a bad back, constant migraines. Rapid Transformational Therapy addresses all this. Why? Because the mind and body are inextricably linked. What we feed our mind with has an automatic effect on our bodies. After revealing the cause of the issue, Grace will then cleverly create a powerful and transformative script for you to listen to, every single day, for 21 days. The purpose of this is to rewire, recode and reconstruct the old negative thoughts, into brand new positive patterns of thinking. A single session has the potential to help YOU understand - and thus change - your old ways. How freeing, how liberating does that sound? Sessions are available face to face or Via Zoom. Grace’s glowing testimonials feature on her website, and more are available on request. Taking things online Grace also offers an online programme consisting of pre-recorded videos incorporating breath, body and mind teachings. The beauty of this is that you can work your way through the content in your own time, in the comfort of your own home. The programme is available to buy in its entirety, or in bite size breath, body and mind sections, at a very affordable price. Grace really does create a safe, sacred space for you. She has been on her own journey and is very open about her vulnerabilities. But through the power of breath, body, mind, she believes she is enough. Her mission is to make you feel this about yourself too! Website: www.gracemcgeehan.com Instagram: @gracemcgeehan Facebook: @gracemcgeehanmindandbody

STYLE ICONS

WHO DEFINED

THE FASHION OF A DECADE From Audrey Hepburn in the Fifties to Kim Kardashian in the 2010s, these are the women whose style summed up an era.

W

hether it’s the swinging Sixties or the minimalism of the Nineties, every decade has a distinctive style, each championed by certain celebrities. Style icons help encapsulate everything that is fashionable from their time, while not necessarily being the celebrities who had the most out-there or unique style. Instead, they’re individuals who captured the feel and fashion of a specific era, set trends everyone wanted to follow, and are still today associated with the style of a particular decade. These are some of the most stand-out icons from the 1950s to today... 1950s: Audrey Hepburn With her sleek black Givenchy dresses, strings of pearls and big sunglasses, Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast At Tiffany’s is still one of the most fashionable characters in film.

46 JUNE 2020

“There’s no doubt Twiggy’s aesthetic sums up the 1960s: super slight, with a pixie crop and voluminous lashes”

By its release in 1961 though, Hepburn was already a style icon in her own right, known for sleek silhouettes with nipped in waists, strapless dresses and a love of preppy collars. It’s an aesthetic that has proved timeless, and endlessly inspiring. 1960s: Twiggy There’s no doubt Twiggy’s aesthetic sums up the 1960s: super slight, with a pixie crop and voluminous lashes. Twiggy - real name Lesley Lawson - was everything you’d want from a supermodel of the time, dressed head-to-toe in mod outfits from stripy dresses to the ever-present miniskirt (Mary Quant reigned supreme).

1990s: Kate Moss The fashion of the Seventies and Eighties was all about maximalism, but this all changed in the Nineties. Supermodel Kate Moss represented a more low-key, grungy kind of glamour, wearing a slew of jeans, spaghetti straps and barely-there slip dresses. This wasn’t an era of sparkles and sequins - instead, Moss become synonymous with the so-called ‘heroin chic’ trend: being super skinny and having that ‘just got out of bed’ look. 2000s: Rihanna Nowadays, we know Rihanna as a red carpet powerhouse, and as the creative director of Fenty, making her the first black woman to run a major luxury house under LVMH. Back in the 2000s, Rihanna was still a fashion icon, but in a very different way to today. Instead of forging her own path, she pretty much wore every trend of the decade. Red carpet events appeared to be an exercise in Noughties fashion box-checking, from low-rise jeans to babydoll dresses and lots of ruched satin. This was before Rihanna found her fashion ‘voice’, but in the Noughties, we were all copying her.

1970s: Bianca Jagger Bianca Jagger was a Seventies it-girl, known for her association with the New York club, Studio 54, which was frequented by the likes of Andy Warhol and Elton John. Jagger was often seen in perfectly tailored suits with flared trousers, showing suiting wasn’t just for men, but also played with sequins, feathers and excellent hats. Born in Nicaragua, she shot to fame after marrying Mick Jagger and was known for her glamorous, party-girl life. Arguably Jagger’s most iconic moment came in 1977, when she mounted a white horse in Studio 54 on her 34th birthday. She did so in classic style: with blown-out hair and a slinky, off-the-shoulder dress. 1980s: Diana Ross In all honesty, Diana Ross was a defining icon of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. She’s such a style chameleon she’s managed to adapt to each era, championing trends while keeping her own signature brand of glamour. Ross is arguably best known for her Eighties fashion though, which was full of shoulder pads, glitter and big hair.

“Back in the 2000s, Rihanna was still a fashion icon, but in a very different way to today”

2010s: Kim Kardashian Love her or hate her, you can’t deny the impact Kim Kardashian has had on fashion. There are so many trends we can thank the Kardashian/Jenner clan for, spearheaded by Kim. She helped bring bicycle shorts to the fore, along with fancy athleisure wear, skintight dresses and an obsession with neutral tones and colour blocking. Whatever she wears is watched by eagle-eyed fans and retailers - so much so, Kardashian won a lawsuit against fast fashion brand Missguided USA last year, arguing it was “notorious” for “knocking off ” the designer clothes she wore. We’re now in a new decade, which begs the question: is there space for a new style star to emerge and dominate the 2010s? Only time will tell. JUNE 2020 47

THE ALPHABET OF VITAMINS It’s time to know the benefits of vitamins A through to F. Prudence Wade asks the experts.

V

itamins are good for us. A well-rounded diet helps us get all the vitamins we need to be healthy, but how about the ones you need for your skin? Of course, you can eat certain things to boost skin health, but your routine should also involve a range of topically applied vitamins, to help your complexion be as clear and glowing as possible. It seems like there’s a whole alphabet of vitamins doing different things for your skin, which is why we’re breaking down each one you need. Disclaimer: we’re using ‘alphabet’ fairly loosely here, as in reality, the main vitamins you should be looking out for run from A to F. Don’t worry, it’s not like you need to add millions of new things into your regime, you’ll likely find lots of these vitamins combined into one product. This is the low-down on the alphabet of vitamins in skincare, and why you should consider using them...

Vitamin A There are many types of vitamin A, but the most common one in skincare is retinol. This is a hero ingredient, with medical director at Cosmetics Doctor Dr Amber Woodcock saying: “When applied to the skin, it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin (leading to plumper, stronger skin). It stimulates the cells to turnover, refreshing dull skin and helping to clear acne. Retinol also 48 JUNE 2020

corrects pigmentation and UV damage, thus helping to even out your skin tone.” With these kinds of benefits, you should definitely be thinking about adding retinol into your skincare routine - but do so with caution. Woodcock’s main piece of advice is to “go slowly” with it. “There is no rush, apply a small amount one to two times a week, and slowly increase as tolerated,” she says. “Always use sunscreen every day to protect your skin.” As with most ingredients, everyone’s skin will respond differently. “I always recommend my clients to trial retinol products with low dose and low frequency, to test their skin’s acceptability,” says Ada Ooi, founder of 001 Skincare. “You can always build it up, but once your skin gets ‘burnt’, it

A

IN SKINCARE can take weeks for the ingredients to get out of the body’s system and the skin to heal.” Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Serum With Retinol & Vitamin B3, £34.99, Boots

B

Vitamin B The most popular type of vitamin B is B3, also known as niacinamide. “B3 can be used to treat acne or fine lines, due to its function to combat inflammation and improve the skin’s barrier,” explains Ooi. Woodcock is a big fan of B3, calling it ‘an amazing skincare ingredient’. “Niacinamide has strong antioxidant effects, helping to regenerate and repair our skin cells. It also reduces redness/blotchiness (great for rosacea) and pigmentation,” she says. If this wasn’t enough, the doctor also states it “reduces wrinkles, regulates sebum (goodbye blocked pores) and is a potent antiinflammatory helping to fight acne” - plus it’s safe to use in pregnancy. Malin + Goetz Resurfacing Face Serum, £58

CD

Vitamin C

This is one of the most common vitamins you’ll see in skincare products - and for good reason. Vitamin C contains antioxidants, which combats skin cell damage. “It helps fight pollutants in our skin, reduces UV damage, stimulates collagen production, reduces pigmentation and helps acne scarring,” explains Woodcock. However, you should be careful with your vitamin C products, keeping them out of the light and sealed tightly, because “it can become unstable (not active) easily”, notes Woodcock. The best time to apply vitamin C is in the morning after cleansing and before sunscreen. No7 Youthful Vitamin C Fresh Radiance Essence, £19.50, Boots

Vitamin D

Vitamin D isn’t something you apply to your skin, but Woodcock still calls it “a very important vitamin”. You get vitamin D from spending time in the sunshine - it’s necessary for our overall health, but remember to wear sunscreen to protect yourself from skin cancer.

E

Vitamin E

“Vitamin E is another great antioxidant to help skin combat free radicals when they ‘attack’, while also helping to heal the damage done,” explains Ooi. She recommends combining it with vitamin C “to prevent and treat tissue damage that leads to premature ageing”. So, why are antioxidants good for your skin? They protect cells from the damage pollutants and toxins from the environment do to our complexion,

and as Woodcock says: “The more toxins you fight with antioxidants, the healthier your skin will be!” Liz Earle Skin Repair Gel Cream, £23, Boots

Vitamin F Last in our tour of the key vitamins in skincare is F. These are “basically fats, also known as lipids”, explains Ooi. She gives the example of linoleic acid, a fatty acid which “provides moisture and plumpness without weighing down the skin; it fortifies and protects the skin’s barrier by maintaining a strong healthy stratum corneum (protective outer layer of skin). It also helps to balance the sebum level of oily and acne-prone skin, to reduce further breakouts.” Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque, £49.50

Tap into Interiors Inspiration There are still lots of ways to get creative with your decor, as interior designer Penny Ann Johnson tells Sam Wylie-Harris.

T

he decor, pattern and colour we bring into our homes is often influenced by the things we see beyond our own four walls, when we’re out and about. Statement pieces that catch our eye, or simple style fixes like a new sofa or display cabinet to set the scene. It’s much easier to imagine how these things will sit and take shape when someone else has done the groundwork, and put all the bits and bobs together in a lovely showroom. So what does interiors inspiration look like during the #stayhomestaysafe era? Things may be very different right now, but tapping into our creative side can bring a host of benefits - for our wellbeing as well as breathing new life into our living spaces (where we’re spending a lot more time than usual!). And there’s still a realm of possibilities to explore, especially when you play around with existing household items, pick up a paintbrush, or

introduce a few key pieces available online. Here, interior designer Penny Ann Johnson of Penny Ann Interiors, who will be appearing at Grand Designs Live 2020, shows how to get creative with your interiors while in isolation... “What have you been doing with your time while we’re all confined to our own four walls? I’d imagine if you’re anything like me, you’re sat on your sofa staring at a bare wall wondering how to improve it, or thinking about how you can complete that spare bedroom you’ve been ignoring for a year,” says Johnson. “But lockdown, means limitations, things aren’t so readily available as retailers are abiding by government regulations. So here’s a few clever tips on how to have some fun with your interiors.”

Play with panelling “Panelling is a thing. It’s everywhere at the moment; Insta-worthy 3D wall panelling is a modern version of period architecture. At first it seems a little ‘off

“To kill some time in isolation, bring all your styling pieces together in one place, regroup them into three’s and redistribute them around your room. And then sit back and relax with a feeling of having a revived space with little effort.” Check out swoonworthy.co.uk for inspiration.

the wall’ but in the right room, it can add great character without a lot of work. “Firstly play around with the width, pattern, orientation and height of the wall to come up with a design. Get yourself online to B&Q Homebase (use their click and car park collect service if available) and purchase some simple lengths of baton to help you create your masterpiece. “Measure your design out on the wall and secure the baton either with grab adhesive or screws. Once it’s secured, choose a beautiful colour to help emphasis the statement. Sit back and watch the shadows cast their shade and your wall come to life.” Check out angelarosehome.com for inspiration.

Create a picture wall “Picture walls are all the rage these days, a great way to fill that empty wall, show some self expression and make that space more homely. “Visit Amazon and search ‘Picture Gallery Frames’. There are some fab sets of 10-plus frames of varying sizes too, to help you create your picture wall. Have a think about what you’d like to put in your frames. “Pinterest is a great source for frame-able quotes, and these are a fab way to make the design feel more personal. Include some family photos - get them printed either via your home printer or a company like Snapfish, delivered to your door. Then get them hung, stand back and revel in the pride from seeing those important moments and people displayed beautifully in your home.” Check out posterstore.co.uk for inspiration.

Group decos and homewares “They say three is a crowd... not in the case of interior styling it’s not! Think about the styling around your home, and think odd numbers. There’s something about grouping things in threes that leads the eye to move around the display. “Some people do prefer a symmetrical look but this needs to be done expertly and with sharp precision. Where as designing with odd numbers in mind allows a little more freedom,” she adds. 56 JUNE 2020

“Think smart with some statement art. In this uncertain world we’re all living in at the moment, support the little independent companies. Check out Etsy and search ‘Prints’. There are some fantastic artists, illustrators and designers, who are still working away to help you make your homes beautiful,” she suggests. “Artwork can be one of the most important parts to a room. It’s a talking point, and offers both the purchaser and onlooker the opportunity to think and express creatively. Find something that speaks to you, and look forward to that little package arriving from the outside world.”

“Picture walls are all the rage these days, a great way to fill that empty wall, show some self expression and make that space more homely”

Consider wall murals “Get out the paint! We’re seeing a huge revival in wall murals. The idea offers such versatility to add character and personality to a room, you’d be mad not to devote at least one wall in your home to an idea,” says Johnson. “So while we’re all getting in touch with our creative sides, delve into your garage and see what old paint pots you have stashed away. Companies like Mylands can still send you sample pots of their fantastic paints (I’m a big fan) to add to your colour library, while you’re searching for inspiration. “Whether it’s a geometrical or floral design, an abstract creation or ombre fade, that wall can be anything you want it to be. Let loose and go wild, it could be the most liberating thing you do during lockdown.” Check out lilitartstore.com for inpiration.

hen the contents of the sandpit are all over the patio, the trampoline has lost its bounce and the little ones are short of something to do, there’s a plethora of gardening books out there with activities to engage them. Here’s a selection for all ages of children to help them dig for victory.

RHS Get Growing by Holly Farrell (Frances Lincoln, £14.99) This easy-to-use family guide to gardening covers everything from how plants work to identifying plants, growing easy fruit and veg and getting children to take part in creating wildlife gardens. If your child is arty, the book offers projects showing them how to decorate clay pots and coasters. If they’re interested in food, there’s an array of suggestions, from how to grow edible flowers to designing a herb garden. And if they are fascinated by wildlife, they can learn how to make a garden for minibeasts and birds, or create a pond in a bucket. They’ll probably need help from an adult to start them off, but the activities aren’t difficult and should help them reconnect with nature. The book strikes an excellent balance between education and fun.

I Ate Sunshine For Breakfast by Michael Holland and illustrated by Philip Giordano (Flying Eye Books, £14.99) Expert ecologist and educator Michael Holland shares this brightly illustrated guide to plants around the world, enabling children to become more acquainted with their leafy neighbours and showing how plants help create everything from rubber to honey. It features DIY projects for young gardeners including the fun-filled messy business of creating cornflour slime; exploring the effects of freezing conditions on deciduous and evergreen trees; upcycling using jars, bottles and tins as well as collecting seeds from the foods you eat; and how to make a power plant with a potato. The Book Of Brilliant Bugs by Jess French (DK, £14.99) This offering is ideal for little ones who are fascinated with creepy crawlies and want to learn more about them. Featuring everything from honey bees to crickets, spiders to beetles, it explains how bugs are huge contributors to our planet and can survive almost anywhere, including high up in the mountains and deep underwater. In easy-to-understand language, French explores the crucial role bugs play at the start of the food chain, their importance as pollinators helping plants grow and looks at the predatory bugs which keep pests at bay. Gardening With Emma by Emma Biggs (Storey Publishing, £14.99) Kids can relate to other kids, right? So this fun guide written by the 14-year-old gardening ace who has her own blog should tick the boxes. With a little help from her dad, Steve, she offers simple projects from step-by-step bug catchers, to growing all your pizza ingredients. In just one year, she grew 68 varieties of tomato. Raising the coolest plants is also a big focus of 74 JUNE 2020

the book. She features everything from species that tickle and make noise, to vegetables ranging from the tiniest to colossal, providing lots of useful know-how about soil, sowing, and caring for a garden throughout the seasons, along with ways to make play spaces among the plants. Aimed at eight to 12-year-olds, lively photography helps capture the authentic creativity of a child who loves to be outdoors, digging in the dirt. Under Your Feet by Dr Jackie Stroud (DK in association with RHS, £9.99) This book for slightly younger readers is awash with fantastic facts about soil, worms and other organisms, cleverly punctuated with illustrations in earthy shades, along with things your children didn’t know about the secret world underground. Did your child know, for instance, that worm poo in soil helps plants grow? Or that ant colonies can join up to form super-colonies which can stretch for thousands of miles? The book takes an entertaining look at how animals build their homes under the ground and how plants survive in adverse conditions, as well as how fungi can grow to be the size of the forest. All these weird and wonderful facts will hopefully prompt your children to seek these creatures out in the garden, from spineless invertebrates to woodlice, spiders and molluscs, as well as seeing the soil and its importance in a different light. Ideal for budding young scientists. You Can Grow Your Own Food by Annabelle Padwick (Collins, out June 11, £7.99) The perfect go-to book for children who are curious about gardening, this new addition to the You Can series is packed with gardening projects and easy tips on how to grow fruit, veg and herbs outside and indoors. The book has space to scribble and draw, so children can design their own gardens and keep track of their progress. The author founded the social enterprise, Life at No.27 in 2019 to provide gardening and wellbeingbased therapy for children and adults struggling with low confidence and mental health issues.

Aged just five she told her school teacher she was going to be a wallpaper designer and that’s exactly what she did after graduating from Leeds College of Art in 1997 with a BA (Hon’s) in Surface Pattern and Textile Design. Fast forward, and after 18 years as Head Stylist and Design Manager for British wallpaper house Graham & Brown, Nina has now gone solo. Alongside husband Paul, an industry expert who spent 16 years at the helm of Graham & Brown’s technical team, Nina launched Woodchip & Magnolia with a determination to do things her own way. Her vision to bring together her creativity with Paul’s technical know-how have made Woodchip & Magnolia unique in the pioneering way they use traditional design skills in a digital world. Freed from the deadlines and seasonal launches most design houses adhere too, Nina can launch the designs she loves when the mood takes her. Her designs are available to order the minute they are unveiled online. With a determination to protect the environment at the heart of their business, Woodchip & Magnolia manufacture all their own wallpaper and fabrics inhouse so their business remains as eco-friendly and sustainable as it possibly can be. They work with artists they love and boast unique ranges, including a stunning collection of wallpapers and velvets from vintage style queen Pearl Lowe – their wallpapers now hang in the bedrooms of supermodels, five-star hotels and legions of family homes. BRING THE CINEMA HOME I

n discussion with Nic Black, Managing Director from the Pyramid Group, we wanted to focus on the use of home entertainment systems and the increased use of these during these uncertain times. As award-winning audio-visual integrators specialising in smart homes and private cinemas, we have seen a marked increase from customers wishing to improve or create home entertainment systems whilst they are spending so much time at home. Now more than ever, the demand being placed on our home networks is exacerbated, with home working using video calls, increased streaming of content as children are filling their social time and all the while relying on poor network infrastructure that is invariably not fit for purpose. Looking into the future, as social distancing and access to public environments will be limited, the opportunity to take the family out for visits to the cinema or to a sports event will not be the same. As cinemas and film studios across the world are feeling one of the largest impacts of this pandemic, the opportunities to view the latest content being released on a pay per view basis is only going to increase. Adapting to this unprecedented situation, many studios have now scrapped scheduled cinema

releases, in favour of home-entertainment releases. The recent release of Trolls on Sky Q was a huge success. With content now being delivered to our homes via so many platforms, service providers are competing hard for this space. Home entertainment systems such as family media rooms or dedicated cinemas are hugely appealing, and the quality that can be experienced will outstrip any commercial cinema visit. The recent European launch of Disney+ showed a huge appetite for their content, and alongside Netflix, Amazon Prime and even curated independent content from the likes of MUBI, mean that the choices available to stream content into your home in 4K UHD quality are enormous. If you couple this online feast with your own movie libraries using high specification products such as Kaleidescape, you will have the best of all worlds. So, why not consider upgrading your home entertainment systems in order to maximise the quality and enjoyment this opportunity brings? Systems can be designed to ensure the highest quality of video and audio using immersive formats, such as Dolby Atmos, are accessible and can be designed to blend into your interiors or designed to create your very own unique dedicated cinema room, guaranteed to bring smiles to all! If you would like to discuss the opportunity to bring the cinema home, then please do get in touch with our Sales Manager, Phillip Roe on 07919 411176.
