HASLEMERE ARTS AND CRAFTS WEEKEND Friday 7 to Sunday 9 July
T
his summer, Haslemere will play host to an Arts and Crafts Weekend to celebrate the town’s rich Arts and Crafts heritage. The weekend of special events, organised by Haslemere Museum and supported by Haslemere Events and the Visitor Information Centre, promises a fascinating insight into the Arts and Crafts Movement. The Arts and Crafts Movement was one of the most influential international artistic movements of modern times. Inspired by the work and writings of John Ruskin and William Morris it grew out of a concern for the effects of industrialisation on society and traditional skills in the late 1800s. The movement influenced many areas of the cultural landscape including architecture, garden design, clothing and home furnishings. Over a 100 years ago, Haslemere was a thriving centre for a community of artists determined to revive lost country crafts in England. They set up craft workshops and weaving houses in the town and collected folk art objects from all over Europe and brought them back to Haslemere to inspire local artisans. The craft workshops and weaving houses have long since disappeared from Haslemere but the history of this inspiring movement is still visible today in the road names and buildings, together with a lasting legacy in the collection of European folk art that remains in Haslemere Museum today. Highlights of the weekend include an evening

Don’t miss the exhibition at Haslemere Museum entitled ‘The Rustic Renaissance’ which runs throughout July and August showcasing wonderful objects from the European Peasant Arts Collection as well as rarely seen textile designs made by local weavers. It will also display original artwork by Godfrey Blount one of the founders of the Peasant Arts movement and an important figure in the later Arts and Crafts movement, as well as photographs and documents from the Peasant Arts archive. Silent Pool Gin – Intricately Realised Inside and Out
F
ounded in the Spring of 2014, Silent Pool Distillers was set up with the vision of creating hand-crafted, premium spirits. Their multi-award winning Silent Pool Gin is produced in small batches using a custom made still which is heated by steam from a reclaimed English boiler that’s fired on local hardwood. Even the bottling is done on site. It is all very labour intensive, but well worth the effort to create a delicate, complex and internationally acclaimed gin that is rolling out across the UK, Europe, USA and soon Japan.
“Silent Pool Distillers coined the phrase ‘intricately realised ‘to embody their core values – to be an artisan producer of high quality spirits”. Silent Pool Distillers coined the phrase ‘intricately realised ‘to embody their core values – to be an artisan producer of high quality spirits. This philosophy is evident from the beautiful teal and copper filigree bottle design to the refreshingly individual gin inside and it’s the thread that runs through the crafting not only of Silent Pool Gin, but all their products. It is exciting times for the company that has been bowled over by the meteoric rise in orders for its products, both domestically (Silent Pool Gin is now available in Waitrose, Majestic, M&S, Wine Rack 32 JUNE 2017
and other fine retailers nationwide) and abroad. In order to meet rapidly growing demand, Silent Pool Distillers are expanding their current distillery, converting two adjacent barns into a home for their new 1,800 litre bespoke copper still. Nestled on the banks of the spring-fed Silent Pool, in the beautiful Surrey Hills, the distillery is open to visitors 7 days a week, Monday-Saturday 9:30-17:00, Sundays & Bank holidays 10:00 – 15:00. You can even immerse yourself into the world of Silent Pool Gin with a 90 minute deep dive distillery tour, covering all aspects of production including product sampling. Admission is £15pp including a £5 voucher and pre-booking is essential. On Saturday 10th of June, the Silent Pool team are having a party at the distillery to celebrate World Gin Day and they welcome members of the public to join them. Meet the distillers, learn how they make their craft spirits, and taste some amazing cocktails including the Cherry Spritz cocktail created in support of Cherry Trees, a local charity which provides respite care for children and young adults with various disabilities. The distillery, located just outside Guildford, is open between 10:00 and 17:00, where free 20-minute distillery tours will be available on a first come, first serve basis. A modern dating agency with old-fashioned values.
F
inding love, when you’re looking for a serious relationship, whether you’re in your 30s, 40s 50s or 60s, can be challenging to say the least. The chances of randomly bumping into a like-minded potential partner in the street, at a party or a work event are remote, especially when you have a busy life, a successful career or are divorced or widowed. Step in Hayley Bystram, who spotted a gap in the market for the return of the old-fashioned matchmaking service, and set up elite dating agency Bowes-Lyon Partnership. Since its inception in 2009 Hayley has been quietly making a name for the agency successfully introducing eligible, high-calibre, accomplished single people who are looking for love and a serious relationship. The secret of Hayley’s success is quite simple; she spends time really getting to know her clients. She meets each prospective member for a complimentary and informal chat over coffee, before they join, to ensure that Bowes-Lyon is right for them, and they are right for Bowes-Lyon. The elite dating agency has won itself a reputation for tact, confidentiality and unrivalled attention to detail. With annual memberships starting at £8,000, members can expect a bespoke service that is tailored to their individuals needs and works around their personal schedules. Steering clear of technology and algorithms associated with online dating, members are, instead, ‘handpaired’ by an expert team of match-makers who meticulously analyse ambitions, values, interests and future aspirations.
38 JUNE 2017
Every step of the match-making process is handled with the utmost delicacy; from initial profile creation to chats with potential suitors. Discretion and confidentiality is of paramount importance and only first names are shared with introductions, so that each member is in control of their personal information and can reveal details about themselves at a pace that suits them. Hayley Bystram, Founder and Director of Bowes-Lyon Partnership, says, “As a leading dating agency, we specialise in bringing together accomplished individuals who are looking for a committed, meaningful relationship. We offer a fresh, modern approach to dating and, at the core of our service is a commitment to understanding and interpreting the needs of others. It’s this personalised approach and scrupulous attention to detail that has resulted in hundreds of compatible, enduring matches.” With their Head Office in Mayfair, London, Bowes-Lyon Partnership opened their second office in Godalming, Surrey two years ago, to cater for their ever-growing Home-Counties portfolio. They have been finalists for the past two consecutive years at the UK Dating Awards, and were proud to be Highly Commended in the Category of Matchmaking Agency of the Year in 2016. Thanks to its enduring efforts over the past eight years, the exclusive dating agency has fostered the development of numerous blossoming romances across the London and the South East. From one year anniversaries to marriages and babies, Bowes-Lyon Partnership matches are built to last.

background and the variety of processes involved in creating his sculptures. In addition to the Main Gallery show, there will also be five outdoor works by Sean Henry positioned throughout the town centre in a trail that will guide the viewer to The Lightbox. The powerful figure of ‘The Wanderer’ (2013) will greet visitors as they leave Woking station and walk towards the town centre. At the corner of Jubilee Square, the contemplative ‘Standing Man’ (2009) will mix with pedestrians, who may be struck by his hyper-real appearance, and inside the entrance to the busy Peacocks shopping centre, the larger-than life ‘Woman (Being Looked At)’ (2006), will bring a strong female presence to the show. In the centre of Jubilee Square people will find an arresting sculpture of a rusting steel tapering platform (‘Catafalque’, 2003), atop which lies a larger-than-life resting male figure, which bears a likeness to the artist. The fifth and final sculpture will be the large-scale ‘Seated Man’ (2011), which will be found at a secret location to be revealed when the trail is installed in early August. ‘Face to Face: The Figurative Sculpture of Sean Henry’ will be on show at The Lightbox, from the 12 August – 5 November 2017. his summer The Lightbox gallery and museum in Woking will celebrate its 10th anniversary and to mark the occasion the major summer exhibition will be a display of works by the internationally recognised sculptor, Sean Henry, who was born in Woking. ‘Face to Face: The Figurative Sculpture of Sean Henry’ (12 August – 5 November 2017) will showcase highlights of the striking artworks made over the last fifteen years which will be exhibited both at the gallery and, for the first time in the history of The Lightbox, in prominent outdoor locations across the town centre. ‘Face to Face’ Sean Henry’s sculptures are figurative and highly realistic. His figures, often anonymous men and women, have a strong physicality which invites the viewer to draw their own interpretations when they come ‘face to face’ with the artworks. Henry uses aspects of size, scale and colour to surprise the viewer and create a sense of theatricality which imbues the figures with a powerful presence. In the Main Gallery, over 20 sculptures will be complimented by a selection of new drawings, which have never before been on public show. The works in this exhibition have been curated to reflect four pivotal themes of Henry’s work: ‘The human form’ reflects Henry’s desire to make his sculptures anonymous yet familiar through their life-like poses, stances and postures. ‘Size and scale’ demonstrates how the artist can significantly affect our perception of the figure by making his artworks either smaller or bigger than life size. ‘Monochrome and polychrome’ highlights how the deliberate addition or omission of colour to figurative works has the power to change how we respond to an artwork. ‘Working methods’ reflects Henry’s multi-disciplinary

efined as the ability to bounce back from adversity, resilience is the new ‘buzz word’ in education. Resilience is not something innate but a skill that can be learned under the guidance of trained and empathetic teachers. At Notre Dame Senior School we pride ourselves on our ability to nurture our girls whilst still maintaining excellent academic standards. In a society where examination focus detracts from the time spent building character and ensuring young people are equipped with the necessary skills such as self-belief and perseverance, resilience training becomes essential. At Notre Dame, we have in place a wide-reaching strategy to promote resilience and wellbeing across the school. This is what we call The Lestonnac Approach. The Lestonnac Approach enables resilience and wellbeing in our girls through well-established practices and initiatives. These include strategies for overcoming obstacles; fostering a ‘bounce back’ attitude to disappointment; and ultimately nurturing intrinsically self-motivated, adaptable young people. The leadership of our school is always looking for innovative ways to revisit, reinforce and review our consistently thorough practices. On average we give 1,200+, three lap rides per day, totalling about 7,500 miles. Without the drivers kindly donating their cars, fuel, tyres and time there would be no event. 3 - 6 Months Before Fine lines, acne or acne scars? INTRAcel is an award-winning skin resurfacing treatment designed to improve your skin quality. No need to airbrush lines or blemishes from your wedding photos! Using a combination of radiofrequency energy and micro-needling, INTRAcel encourages your body to produce collagen and elastin for healthier, more youthful skin. In addition, this treatment delivers outstanding results on acne by regulating oil glands and destroying acne bacteria on the skin. INTRAcel also reduces the appearance of the scars that acne can leave behind. Using a combination of radiofrequency and ultrasound, ULTRAcel is a non-invasive treatment which stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in the deeper layers of the skin. This creates an instant lift which will continue to improve over the coming months. We find that this treatment is particularly great for restoring jawline definition. 64 JUNE 2017

3 Months Before Some areas of fat such as inner thighs, love handles and moobs can be hard to slim down with diet and exercise alone. Fortunately, we have two treatments at the Light Touch Clinic which reduce stubborn fat for good. Both CoolSculpting and Vanquish are non-surgical, FDAapproved treatments which destroy fat cells without damaging surrounding tissue and skin. The damaged fat cells are then expelled from the body over the next 3 months. Both treatments remove unwanted fat by destroying the fat cells, but use different technologies to do so. CoolSculpting exposes the fat cells to low temperatures whilst Vanquish exposes them to heat. CoolSculpting is especially brilliant for unwanted bulges of fat such as moobs and love handles. On the other hand, Vanquish is better suited for those looking to see a slimmer version of their current shape.

BEAUTY TIPS
f you want to know about make-up, skincare and products that’ll make you look and feel fantastic, ask a beauty vlogger. Bubz - aka Lindy Tsang - launched her vlog Bubzbeauty almost a decade ago, when she couldn’t find a ‘real’ job. She now makes a very successful living out of it - as her three million YouTube subscribers will tell you, not to mention her 814K Instagram and 262K Twitter followers. The Northern Irish mum-of-one (with another on the way) is a big fan of Japanese products (because of their “quality control”) and Korean beauty trends, but mostly likes to keep things simple. “Simple looks don’t go out of style,” says Bubz, 30. “Make-up that’s too heavy can age you, so you want to look fresh-faced.” Here are her top tips, insider secrets and make-up bag must-haves...
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANSING A lot of people don’t realise how important cleansing is. Spend a few minutes massaging your face with cleansing oil, before rinsing off. Make sure it bubbles up and when you rinse, splash 12-15 times to really get rid of that residue. Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil, £24.50 (www.origins.co.uk)
LIPSTICK, CONCEALER AND A BROW PENCIL ARE YOUR MOST IMPORTANT PRODUCTS If your brows are done and skin looks nice, your make-up is 80% finished. And once you’ve got some lip colour on, it doesn’t matter how dark your dark under-eye circles are, the lips are all anyone will focus on. Colourpop Lippie Stix in Whip, £16.36 (www. 66 JUNE 2017

Make Up For Ever Pro Light Fusion Highlighter, www.debenhams.com
ALWAYS USE HIGHLIGHTER I’m pregnant right now and people keep telling me I’ve ‘got the glow’, but it’s actually a highlighter by Make Up For Ever. I use it under my eyes and on my cheeks. Make Up For Ever Pro Light Fusion Highlighter, currently reduced to £24.75 from £27.50 (www.debenhams.com)
USE ICE TO DE-PUFF If you wake up puffy, dunk your face into iced water for 20 seconds and it makes all the difference. It reduces puffiness, tightens pores and wakes you up. You can just use an ice cube or cold water if you prefer.
Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate www.kiehls.co.uk
Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, narscosmetics.co.uk
MAKE YOUR OWN FACE MASK I love sheet masks but I also like making my own. Nothing compares to mixing yogurt and oatmeal together. It can solve any skin problem - acne, dryness, oiliness, dull skin, everything. Just use natural yoghurt and oats.
FOR BUDGET BEAUTY, OPT FOR MAYBELLINE, L’OREAL AND SOAP & GLORY Maybelline makes fantastic concealer - their technology has really stepped up a notch. L’Oreal and Revlon make great foundations and I really love Soap & Glory products, especially their mattifying powders.

TRIED AND TESTED Can stick-on patches smooth out wrinkles as effectively as Botox? Sarah Marshall finds out... “Designed to rapidly iron out fine lines, Realine patches claim to act like Botox, but without the needles - or the hefty price tag. There are three types (sold separately), targeting forehead frown lines; under-eye and smile lines; and crow’s feet (my personal bugbear). You pop a patch (or two) on and leave it to work its magic. The frown line patch, which is worn overnight, sticks on easily like Sellotape, but I found the other patches, which were very moist, a bit tricker to keep in place, even for the requisite half an hour. When I peeled them off, though, I was amazed to see instant results, with smooth skin where once there were wrinkles, but the effect was rather shortlived. In the run up to a big event, or if you’re planning a ‘no filter’ selfie binge, it’s worth whacking on a couple of patches, but for long-term results, they’re no match for actual Botox.” Realine Needle Free Freeze Patches, from £28 (www.realinebeauty.com)

Things are getting personal in the bathroom... Gabrielle Fagan reveals three key looks to make a style splash
BATHROOM RULES by sleek brassware and fresh white walls for an efficient, sleek look. Bathroom units raised off the floor, increasing visible floor space, to create an illusion of a larger room, are starring, and a particularly striking ‘floating’ effect can be achieved, with wall-hung, chunky, unsupported slabs in gloss or wood grain, and slim, curved vessel basins on top.”

here’s a new wave of styles washing over bathrooms. The tide’s turning against the predictable, and embracing a more go-with-the-flow approach means you can mix-and-match furniture and fittings to conjure a space that perfectly suits your taste, as well as your practical needs, whether it’s a spa-like haven, a functional family room, or a contemporary wet room. As designers become more adventurous, sophistication, glamour and individuality rule. And it’s easy to achieve a ‘wow’ factor, thanks to stateof-the-art technology - think TVs, sound systems and light and water shows in the shower - sculptural sanitary ware, and even stunning waterproof wallpaper now vying with tiles for attention. “The traditional bathroom suite has become outdated and there’s a desire for the space to become customised, with people seeing it as a room where they can display individual pieces, as they would art,” says Leanne Martin, head of product at Sottini. “A strong industrial trend is coming through, with steel-effect wall-hung cabinets complemented
4 JUNE 2017
“If you don’t want to reach out and touch the walls, you’re not doing it right for 2017. Bathrooms no longer mean matching tiles as far as the eye can see - as a nation, we’ve become experimental with wall finishes and shrugged off the constraints of the white bathroom tile,” says Martin. “Industrial concrete walls are being paired with textured wallpapers, while tile effects are being created using countless different sizes, shapes, prints and texture options. Even a retro wood finish has made a comeback for a Scandi-chic style statement, and for the really bold, vertical green, living walls, to give a lush 3D impact you can’t beat!” Water, she points out, is a feature in itself. “It’s not enough that it drains down a plughole any more. It’s all about the spectacle of how it falls in a waterfall-like sheet from a height and disappears out
of sight into concealed drainage.” LOOK OUT FOR: Mirrors with sensor controlled lighting and de-misting, as well as inbuilt functions linked to music systems, TVs and phones. SERENE SANCTUARY “The bathroom isn’t purely about functionality, or a clinical environment any more. It’s a sanctuary that needs as much design consideration as a living room,” says Daniel Cook, principal development designer at C.P. Hart. “It’s all about subtle elegance and a beautiful harmony of shades with less ‘pops’ of colour. Muted consistent tones, such as taupes and greys for furniture and sanitary ware, are increasingly popular colour choices. There’s a move beyond white and glazed surfaces and a significant increase in pastel shades of pinks and blues.” LOOK OUT FOR: A refined industrial trend with brushed finish brassware, matt finishes for ceramics, as well as silk/satin glass finishes. he best kitchens don’t just look beautiful, but they behave beautifully too. That’s what international interiors company Neptune believe, and it’s a belief that’s felt in every inch of its exquisitely crafted kitchens. Timeless in style, thoughtful in design, uncompromising in quality, these are kitchens to last a lifetime. Founded in 1996, Neptune is an award-winning British interiors and lifestyle brand with stores across the UK and Europe, including our very own in the heart of Weybridge. For those who are yet to discover Neptune, theirs is a world of beautifully hand-crafted furniture, textiles and accessories for the home and garden. Design wise, they’re perhaps most known for kitchens with their heirloom-worthy dressers not far behind. Their trademark ‘look’ is British. Refined, simple, sturdy, and with an almost obsessive attention to detail. And they’re certainly most respected for their commitment to craft and quality. Never will you find chipboard in a Neptune piece, nor will you see MDF, ever. Put simply, they make things they’re proud of, and want you to be too.
“The pared-back Suffolk takes its cue from the Shaker movement” Neptune’s kitchen collection consists of four signature designs: Chichester, Suffolk, Henley and Limehouse, and each comes with a lifetime guarantee. Chichester is a classic English design with cockbead moulding and has a simple perfection to it. The pared-back Suffolk takes its cue from the Shaker movement and shows a real discipline to design. The almost regal Henley kitchen is crafted entirely from solid oak and includes some rather impressive curved cabinetry. The Limehouse is the sleek one. The most obviously contemporary, it’s full of hidden secrets like a pullout spice rack and white stone prisms that act as drawer dividers. The one thing they all have in common is a wonderful amount of choice. From paint colours and types of cabinetry to work surfaces and even hardware, together with your dedicated kitchen designer you can create the kitchen you’ve always wanted. Relax, Renew and Refresh
We love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home.Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams.
B
athroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.
A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look. THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to 10 JUNE 2017
really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness. AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household. LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll holder and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

DRAMATIC PRODUCTION Glamour and sparkle made this Surrey kitchen shine
12 JUNE 2017
D
esire for a larger open-plan kitchen was this Surrey family’s ambition when deciding to extend their Victorian home. Somewhere the whole family could get together to eat, relax and entertain. Exploiting the long garden they added a 6.5m extension, with the inclusion of their old kitchen this gave them an impressive 9.6m x 4.75 m space. Now they could create a separate utility room and open-plan kitchen, dining and family room all connected to the panoramic views of the garden. They approached Kate Diss at Sanctuary Kitchens & Bathrooms to collaborate on this impressive design and installation. She helped them reimagine the space understanding what they wanted to achieve. “This was a dream kitchen, a lot of thought went into the design and materials to fluidly link both the inside and outside spaces,” explains Kate. Visiting friends and their client’s homes helped to provide inspiration for the couple to establish what they wanted from this generous space. Initially they were looking for pale grey gloss finish doors with a dramatic contrasting tone. Looking through the sample doors at the showroom in Shepperton they were instantly attracted to furniture from Pyram. Selecting two tones, pale powder grey doors with a dramatic contrasting Hacienda dark grained wood effect door. A streamlined handless design keeps the cabinetry looking sleek and chic. Incorporating finger rails allowed the doors to overhang by 30mm making them easy to pull open. Kate says “This is both practical and aesthetically pleasing in the
overall design.” Built in appliances continue the contoured feel. Storage was also a priority for this family home. A bank of tall deep storage larders with internal shelving was designed and positioned down one side of the room. As the room benefits from natural light it was decided to utilise the same Hacienda dark grained wood doors. “These are available in different grain directions, the design incorporated
“Visiting friends and their client’s homes helped to provide inspiration for the couple to establish what they wanted from this generous space” the vertical grain on the larder units and horizontal grain on the drawers” explains Kate. On the wish list was also a feature island. This gave an eye catching focal point to the room and enabled the design to have a creative rather than built in effect. Positioned within the island was essential extra storage and the hob with a subtle ceiling extractor above. Designer white Corian worktops 70mm deep seamlessly flow from the floor to the worktop on the island, giving distinct diversity to the other kitchen doors. A shimmer sparkle added to the toughened glass on the walls gives a hint of glamour and shine but also a practical surface for a busy family kitchen. The overall result is a dramatic but welcoming social space. www.sanctuarykitchens.net

f your kitchen units have seen better days and you don’t want to go to the expense and hassle of replacing them, give them an instant makeover by changing the doors and drawer fronts. This will transform the kitchen and needn’t be too expensive - B&Q (www.diy.com), for example, has a big range of affordable unit doors and drawer fronts, many available in store. If the units aren’t standard sizes or you want a more affordable option, simply paint the doors and drawer fronts to give them a new look, or glue thin MDF to the front to change the style and then paint them.
CLEAR THE CLUTTER Cluttered kitchens aren’t a selling point. If lack of worktop space is a problem, think about how you can make what you have go further. Use microwave brackets to get your microwave off the worktop, or fit nice wall shelves to declutter the worktop. In a small kitchen, a hinged wall-hung table will give you more work space and somewhere to eat. If your kitchen has highish ceilings and you’re happy to change the wall units, tall ones provide extra storage. Failing that, stack attractive baskets or boxes on top of the existing wall units to make the most of the space, but don’t store anything heavy up there.
SHOWER POWER Somewhere to shower is essential for most buyers and if your bathroom doesn’t have a shower, it may be letting you down. There’s an inexpensive answer - replace the bath taps with bath-shower mixer taps, which are bath taps with a shower hose and head. As long as your bath is suitable for showering and the water pressure is good, all you need is a bath screen or shower curtain, plus a riser rail on the wall to hold the shower head, and
you have a shower that should add value and make your home more sellable.
STEAM CLEAN Grubby tile grout makes kitchens and bathrooms look grotty. White grout is easily marked by cooking splashes, shampoo, shower gel and the like, but there is a quick and easily solution - steam-clean it. Use a steam cleaner like the excellent Karcher SC 3 (£159.99, www.kaercher.com/uk) and your grout should soon look like new. If the power of steam doesn’t work, or work sufficiently, you can apply grout paint to re-whiten the grout. In the worse cases, consider raking out the stained grout and applying more, but this is a big job and you may chip the tiles in the process.
FRESHEN UP If you’re selling your home, giving tired walls and woodwork a fresh coat or two of paint will make a big difference to any room, but especially the kitchen and bathroom because they’re key rooms. Make sure you use a scrubbable paint so it stays looking good - special kitchen and bathroom emulsions are designed to withstand things like mould and steam and are available in all sorts of colours these days. 18 JUNE 2017

IMPROVING, RATHER THAN MOVING STILL SEEMS TO BE THE TREND I
t was not that long ago that Lloyds Bank research showed over 14 million people in the UK have undertaken major work on their current property, or plan to do so within the next year in order to improve or add value to their home. According to the Lloyds Bank study, almost 2.2 million people can’t afford to move, but have instead opted to improve their current house, plus one third of UK homeowners carried out home improvements with the specific aim of adding value to their property. Once homeowners look into the costs of moving, such as the cost of hiring an estate agent, buildings surveyor, mortgage arrangement fees, solicitors, removal company fees, plus various legal fees, including conveyance fees and stamp duty tax, these fees add up to make an already expensive expense even more expensive. The Independent’s home improvement commentators have a different slant on things concluding “Improving your home rather than
100 JUNE 2017
trading it in for another can be a very good investment. It’s cheaper to make space than buy it.” The comparison website MoneySuperMarket. com suggestion to property owners is that “staying put and extending or changing the layout could prove a cost-effective alternative to changing properties altogether.” Research published by the Halifax Building Society showed that almost 20% of those questioned desire to move into a UK property that requires no home improvements. If this is true, a staggering one in five of the population would prefer to buy a house that needs nothing doing to it, which if they can afford to throw money away like that well OK, but is surely not so sensible a move for hard working middle England who tend to work more hand to mouth. Buying a “ready made” home is often an expensive option, as one either pays a premium to the property developer who built and/or renovated the property, or alternatively a handsome profit to the home owner who did up the property in order
“Homeowners continue to improve rather than move, which is good news at least for the DIY industry”
to gain a substantial return on a relatively modest investment in risk/reward terms. Consequently, is it not far more sensible financially for anyone considering buying a house to instead actually be the property owner who carries out the home improvements, thereby being the ones to benefit from any subsequent increase in property value? With the pace of recovery from the latest recession still painfully slow, and with many householders having less and less disposable income, homeowners continue to improve rather than move, which is good news at least for the DIY industry and the likes of B&Q, Homebase, Screwfix and Wickes. Independent double glazing manufacturers and installers, Hazlemere Windows have seen an increasing number of property owners enquiring about replacement double glazed windows and doors for their extension and/or loft conversion. In addition, growing families are looking into the feasibility of adding a conservatory or orangery onto their house to provide much needed extra high quality living space, be it a kitchen/diner, gym, home office, play room, dining room or enlarged living room. Building a conservatory or hybrid orangery can be more aesthetically pleasing than a full blown brick built extension with a tiled or flat roof. Despite the changes to the Building Regulations that came into effect on 1st October 2010, and the new legal requirement that all UK property owners (replacing any existing window(s) and/or door(s), or indeed building an extension) must now fit compliant higher performing thermally efficient fenestration products, it is still easier and less costly to obtain the necessary permissions to build a conservatory. Plus as long as Building Regulations are not required, it is usually far quicker to obtain all appropriate legal approvals to add a conservatory to your property, as long as you don’t live in a flat that has no outdoor ground level space! Also a UPVC or aluminium double glazed conservatory is much less expensive to build and available for home owners to utilise as additional living space a lot sooner than an actual extension that requires both time consuming planning permission and Building Regulatory Approval, plus signing off by a Building Control Officer from your local planning department when finished. Building an extension that matches in, loft conversion or conservatory will add value to any home; whilst at the same time provide invaluable extra living space. These types of home improvement options done professionally to a high standard are far less costly than the massive expense of moving house, especially when you take into account legal fees, so is it no surprise that so many UK property owners decide to improve rather than move. To find out what the potential home improvement options and budget costs are

Broadview
Bespoke Shading Solutions A Family Business It all started in the back room of a hardware store in the late seventies, when David Pratt decided to start selling blinds within his already successful timber business in Broadstone. Whilst incredibly ambitious, David could never have imagined that this extra merchandise would one day transform into a multi-million pound business. What’s so charming about Broadview is that it still remains a family business, even now almost 50 years down the line; with David’s sons Mark and Ian at the helm, the business continues to grow and take-on new and exciting projects.
Innovation At Its Finest When I asked ‘Mike Lingham’ (head of sales) what his favourite project to date had been, he went on to explain their recent work up in London, for the hugely successful Recording Studio. Broadview had initially been invited to rehabilitate their roof terrace, by replacing their somewhat worn umbrellas. Only when they visited the site their creative team was unanimously struck by a different vision – something that would totally transform that space. Regularly used as an entertainment center for guests and recording artists, Broadview created a design concept that would renovate the terrace into the ultimate outdoor party pad, that could still stand up to the erratic British forecast. Broadview planned, designed and fitted a state of the art awning unlike any of it’s kind.
Luxury Products For Your Home I was under the illusion that the kind of products that commercial clients got would be different to those for residential jobs, but Mike explained, “There is no difference between the products we use in people’s homes, to the ones used in our large scale commercial projects – just more of them”. So ultimately the blinds in your home could be identical to those in a five-star hotel or even a recording studio for that matter – swanky windows indeed.
Shading On Trend Mike informed us that the way forward was very much about ‘automation’. It’s been a pretty innovative decade in terms of the progression of technology and it hasn’t bypassed the shading industry either. Supposedly in the next 5-6 years nearly all window shading will be battery powered, or in one way or another automated, as predicted by Mike and evidently the benefits are endless. Keep your eyes peeled, with the powers at be regularly attending training and industry relevant expos, I’m 102 JUNE 2017
confident that Broadview will be one of the very first to stock automated shading, within budget.
Bespoke Shading Solutions Little insider information for those who might not know; the recent extension of ‘Bournemouth’s Oceanarium Café’ was created by Broadview’s talented team of designers and manufacturers. The iconic local haunt wanted to make the most of their incredible sea views, which were previously covered by towering white walls, so Broadview created a custom outdoor structure that could easily cope with the blustery seaside conditions, but didn’t take away from the view. For luxurious shading solutions at affordable prices, visit or get in-touch with Broadview. 57 Hatchpond Road, Nuffield Industrial Estate, Poole, Dorset BH17 0JZ Telephone: 01202 679012; Email: sales@broadview.co.uk; www.broadview.co.uk

astle Conservatories, Surrey and London’s premier design and build company, talk about how extending your property with an elegant orangery or conservatory can truly enhance your home. So, what is the different between an orangery and a conservatory? Orangeries originated in Renaissance Italy in the 17th Century, and were originally built to protect precious citrus fruit from the elements in the grand homes of the day. Seem as a symbol of wealth, they became a room for entertaining and the ultimate addition to some of the grandest buildings in Europe. The modern orangery is a luxury extension of your natural living space creating home gym, games room or dining area that enhances your home and adds value to your property. Conservatories were also developed to house exotic plants and even animals to shield them from the colder climates of Western Europe. Popularity in the United Kingston was at an all-time high in the 19th century born from our natural love of gardening as a nation and in modern times the Victorian designs of this era are as ever popular with home owners.
The modern orangery is a luxury extension of your natural living space So, what is the difference? A conservatory should have side walls and a roof that is predominantly glazed. Orangeries usually have more brickwork than a conservatory and use tall windows to 106 JUNE 2017

Our love of Scandi interiors shows no sign of waning - but that doesn’t mean you can’t update the theme. Gabrielle Fagan turns to home style blogger and author Niki Brantmark for inspiration
Scandi Love
I
t’s hard to escape Scandinavia’s influence on our lives - and it’s in our living rooms that it’s really made its mark. That uber-cool blend of clean lines, simple shapes and beautifullydesigned functional furniture adds up to a sophisticated, elegant look that’s proved irresistible. But just as the Scandi buzzword-of-the-moment has moved on from the Danish ‘hygge’ to the Swedish ‘lagom’ – which means ‘just the right amount’ – the vibe in interiors has evolved too, making way for more balanced, pared-back style, where comfort and quality reign supreme. That ‘less is more’ vision is perfectly understood by Niki Brantmark, a Londoner who moved to Sweden more than a decade ago. The move inspired her blog, My Scandinavian Home – and now her new book, The Scandinavian Home, opens the door to a host of distinctive spaces, including dreamy log cabins. “Scandinavian homes are renowned for their clean lines and muted colours and there’s a wonderful ease in the way they create them and apply their innate
sense of style,” Brantmark enthuses. “In general, they believe it’s better to take time layering their homes with items that tell a story and have a sense of purpose. It all helps to make their settings unique and filled with personality and beauty.” The huge popularity of the Scandi look means it can be created quickly and easily, or you can follow a more measured approach, and take your time collecting one-off finds and heirloom pieces.
SCANDI STYLE RULES Follow Niki Brantmark’s guide to creating Scandi-style decor... • Keep the look clean and fuss-free, focusing on straight lines and simple shapes. “In many homes, whether urban, country or rural dwellings, you will find only a few beautifully crafted, high-quality iconic design pieces, alongside antiques and flea market finds, all made from natural, sustainable sources.” • Stick to light, muted colours, such as white, light grey and blue, for a calm look and feel. “The 108 JUNE 2017

preference is for light wood floors and white walls and ceilings which reflect the light.” • Leave windows as unobscured as possible to allow natural light to fill the room. “Scandinavians are inspired by light, having an abundance of it in summer, but so little of it in winter, so house design tends to maximise the natural light flow with large windows.” • Create interest using different textures, such as marble, wood and stone. “Nature and weather are major influences, as homes have to be made warm and cosy, not simply with log burning stoves, but also through incorporating earthy colour tones and natural materials from wood to leather, to soften the clean lines of the architecture.” • Add layers of soft materials such as cotton, linen and sheepskin, for a warm and inviting space. “Nordic principles are largely to do with quiet, understated aesthetics and surroundings,” says Kasia Wiktorowicz, at paint specialists, Valspar. “Muted mid-tones, like shades of grey, caramel or soft blue, are restful yet interesting, and help create a clean and balanced design. Chalky whites also blend quietly with these colours, so you are left with a calming interior that will rejuvenate your mind after a busy day.” “Choose a soft neutral shade for your flooring, which could be wood flooring or tile,” says Jemma Dayman, assistant buyer, Carpetright. “It’s all about introducing different tones of colour, and sheepskins or wool rugs are perfect for this look, which could be in pale hues or, for more practicality but still appropriate, earthy shades.” Statement lights are a feature in a pared back setting, and a selection of pendant lights hung over a table, unified by colour, attract the eye upwards and define a dining area, and there are many furniture companies specialising in Scandinavian style, with furniture and sheepskin rugs.
