un away with the circus this summer and weave your way through an array of hidden gardens and spectacular lawns at The Savill Garden in this immersive production of Shakespeare’s much loved ‘As You Like it’ from 22 June to 24 July 2016. Forced into exile by their own families, heroine Rosalind and Orlando, a young gentleman of the kingdom, venture deep into the Forest of Arden where they encounter ‘The Golden Age’; a mesmerising travelling circus which has taken up residence beneath the canopy. Masquerading as Ganymede, Rosalind embarks on a journey of love lessons and romantic trickery, before stumbling across one of Duke Senior’s noblemen, Jacques, who fully embraces the circus folk and continually reflects on the futility of life and love as a motley fool. A story of transformation, ‘As You Like It’ challenges conventional ideas of love and lust, blurs gender roles and muses on the absurdity of life in this brilliant pastoral comedy. The play unfolds in Britain’s finest ornamental garden and concludes extravagantly with a triple wedding where the audience and company are encouraged to come together in a boisterous, acrobatic, musical celebration indulging in food and drink from the finest local suppliers. ‘As You Like It’ will celebrate the best of the British summertime with a delicious BBQ served during the final wedding scene provided by award-winning caterers Leiths, whose mouth-watering menu will provide a sensational finale to the performance. Drinks with also be available to purchase, as a hidden bush bar serving everything from a Fever Tree and Sipsmiths G&T to Pol Roger Champagne, to a nice cold beer from the local Windsor and Eton Brewery, will be popping up throughout the play. hat is the Brooklands Double Twelve Festival? Well, it is a weekend of fantastic motoring action and entertainment that takes place every June at Brooklands celebrating all that made the world famous track in Weybridge a household name. This year it is on 18th and 19th June and in celebration of the Museum being open to the public for 25 years, there is a special silver award in the Councours d’Elégance competition. The Concours is a ‘beauty pageant’ of cars that are scritinised by the judges for their high levels of restoration or authenticity and always sets cameras clicking. The iconic environs of the Museum site are put to good use as rare and beautiful cars are put through their paces across the two whole days. In addition to the competitive events, there is a host of other attractions throughout the weekend; a Vintage Mobile Cinema will be in attendance showing period Brooklands films and news reel footage, the Test Hill Challenge will be running on both days, providing much merriment as it invites practically anything on wheels (or legs) to reach the summit of that most famous peak and on Sunday there will be a cavalcade of vehicles on the Mercedes-Benz

World circuit. Many Car Clubs will be coming along to showcase their cars and the retro-futuristic Sinclair C5s will be back. There are extra catering outlets all over the site and Concorde and the amazing 4D Theatre will be running their rides and experiences all day. Oxshott Royals Youth F.C. Grass Roots Football’s Finest Sports Relief and KitAid, which sends outgrown or unwanted football kit and equipment to kids in greater need than our own. With no home ground, the Club plays and trains at around 20 different venues and therefore it would be very easy for the Club to become a franchise operation with little to bind the teams together as a Club. But with monthly manager meetings and parent reps for each team, as well as wonderful annual awards evenings the set-up has a real Club feel about it. To sustain this Roger explains that everyone involved needs to accept the principle of compromising where necessary for the greater good of the Club. None of this would be possible without the support and dedication of many people; managers and most notably some key people on the Club’s committee. Roger is clear that much remains to do for the in-coming Chairman and Committee.

Roger first became involved with the Oxshott Royals 10 years ago

M

any of our readers, will already know of Oxshott Royals Youth Football Club; Cobham and Oxshott’s largest grassroots football club for boys and girls aged 5 to 18. Oxshott Royals has 600 boys and girls playing over 800 matches a season for the 42 Oxshott Royals teams at each age group from 5 to U18. The people behind the scenes keeping the Club running smoothly as it grows and consistently winning cups and accolades both on and off the field are some of the hard working mums and dads of the players. Indeed the Club was honoured to receive the Surrey FA Community Club of the Year award in 2014 in recognition of the way it is run for the children. At the helm of this outstanding community club is their Chairman, Roger Beech. ‘Never ending but immensely fulfilling’ would probably be how Roger ruefully describes his work for the Club, however, it is a role of such importance to the Club that when Roger hangs up his boots in June, after 5 years as Chairman, the next person in this role will have a lot to live up to. Roger’s enthusiasm and dedication is something that professional football clubs dream of from their top staff. Despite his own heavy workload working for Willis Towers Watson as a Director of International Consulting Services,

30 JUNE 2016

Roger undertakes a full schedule of evening meetings, club policy writing, team coaching, events planning and helping to deal with any problems that occur. Always looking at ways to improve the Club and bring added benefit to the children, nothing is too much trouble. As a mad keen football fan and resident of Cobham, Roger first became involved with the Oxshott Royals 10 years ago when his 5 year old son was looking for somewhere to play and Oxshott Royals needed someone to look after the 30 children in their U6 age bracket. Since then he has coached the same team as they have grown, winning league titles, cups and tournaments over the years, last year becoming the first team in Oxshott Royals history to win the Surrey County Cup, the most prized Cup in grass roots football and following that up with being this season’s losing finalists. Now with the team soon to be U16’s Roger is looking forward to taking the team as far as U18. He is keen to reinforce to all connected with the Club that everyone is an ambassador and that as a registered charity the Club relies on the goodwill of all organisations that we touch, whether that’s local schools, businesses, Elmbridge council, Surrey FA and other charities that the Club supports such as

Among the Club’s priorities are; • To continue the search to find a home ground, preferably in Cobham or Oxshott; a tall order as they need in excess of ten acres. • To expand the girls section of the Club • To support Surrey FA and Surrey Youth League initiatives to “reclaim the game” and to reduce the number of unsavoury touchline incidents that occur on an almost weekly basis involving adults as opposed to the children.

Chairman Roger Beech

THE DETAILS If you would like to get involved with the Oxshott Royals as a player/manager, volunteer, sponsor, or even with their search for land, please go to their website for contact details, you can be sure of a very warm welcome. n this week in July 1966 England were winning the World Cup. But history was also being made in Windsor where the first ever rock festival in Britain was being held. Some call it the first ever rock festival in the world. The line up at Windsor marked a huge change. It moved from being blues and jazz to bands like The Who, the Small Faces and the Yardbirds featuring Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Eric, Ginger and Jack also played, becoming world-beaters Cream. Now, five decades later, homage is being paid to that festival. A special anniversary concert – On Track For Summer – is being held at the same venue, the Royal Windsor Racecourse. The Manfreds with Paul Jones and Mike D’Abo had 13 Top 10 hits, three UK No 1s and two US No 1s. Their music was a soundtrack to the time. Chris Farlowe had the No 1 single with Out Of Time, PP Arnold released The First Cut Is The Deepest and Angel Of The Morning, Cliff Bennett made Got To Get You Into My Life. It was The Move’s single Flowers In The Rain that launched Radio 1 and a string of hits followed. Cranleigh Show celebrates 70 glorious years 40 JUNE 2016

Dairy cattle at Cranleigh Show in the 1960s

C

David Elliott

ranleigh Show is in party mood! On Sunday June 19 it celebrates its 70th birthday. Ever since the end of WWII farmers in the Cranleigh area have upheld the proud tradition of agricultural shows, with a family friendly atmosphere, hotly contested livestock and horse competitions, adrenalin filled ring entertainment, hands-on activities and shopping. One family stands out - the Elliotts of Whipley Manor Farm. They were tenant farmers at Painshill Farm from 1800 until 1920 when Daniel Elliott bought Whipley Manor. Daniel was the first president of the Cranleigh and District Farming Club which founded the show, and his son David was an early chairman. Grandson Adrian has done several stints as chairman of the Cranleigh and South Eastern Agricultural Society as it is now called, and this year it is the turn of his great grandson William! A lot has changed in agriculture over those four generations. Early shows were dominated by Friesian and Holstein dairy cows. Now you are more likely to see magnificent continental bulls or shaggy highland cattle, plus a good entry of sheep, as beef, sheep and arable farming have replaced dairying. “My grandfather grew up with the wartime agriculture committees,” said Adrian. “At the end of the war rather than disband them the farmers were encouraged to keep them going and run shows and competitions. I didn’t get involved until the late 1960s. My father was chairman when they organised the purchase of Cranleigh Showground and he became president in the 1980s. “In some ways it has changed over the years and in others it has kept its traditions. The original idea of the show was to show off your own animals for sale for breeding but the advent of artificial insemination and embryo transfer has speeded up the process of genetic improvement. But it means there is less of a business incentive to take your livestock round the showing circuit. People who still do it carry on because they enjoy the tradition and are still selling breeding stock. “We run the show because we are trying to put something back into the community and show people what farmers are trying to do. “ The 70th show is looking exciting: Top of the arena billing this year is a first for Cranleigh - Moto-Stunts International motorcycle display team with Britain’s top female motorcycle stunt rider and skilled trick and freestyle display jumpers. Their display involves large car jumps, pyrotechnic stunts, race quads, motorcycle stunts and specialist vehicles. Scurry Racing is back by popular demand. In this highly skilled, high speed sport pairs of feisty ponies harnessed

to four wheel scurry carriages demonstrate amazing athleticism rocketing round a tight obstacle course. The Sidesaddle Concours d’Elegance, in the main arena for the first time at Cranleigh, will be a complete contrast. Sidesaddle riding is enjoying increasing popularity and the riders in their smart habits evoke a past world. World of Wings is back with its fabulous collection of wacky birds - think flocks of parrots free flying free and gawky hornbills staggering after amazing bird trainer Mike Simmons. Terriers will be racing in the John Morris Countryside Arena, Massey Ferguson tractors –also celebrating their 70th - will be there with a host of other vintage tractors, and the highlight of the show will be the magnificent parade of cattle and sheep, the grand finale of a day of hot competition. It takes weeks of patience and hard work to train livestock for the show ring and get them looking their best. So put the date in the diary – June 19 at Cranleigh Showground, GU6 7DW, and go to www.cranleighshow. co.uk for entry forms and tickets. Online bookings: Adult £11; Senior (60+) £7; Children 5-16 £1. COBHAM MILL

his picturesque early 19th century mill, is situated in delightful surroundings on the banks of the River Mole. It is Grade II listed and is the only surviving fully working watermill in Surrey. It was originally part of a much larger mill complex that once stood alongside. Its rural location next to the nearby weirs, the views over the adjacent fields and farmland, and the variety of local wildlife, make it ideally placed for leisurely exploration Although the Domesday Book records that there were three mills in Cobham, we have no documentary evidence

leased the mill. The Abbott of Chertsey leased the mill to Richard Sutton in 1534. Those associated with the mill through the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries include Sir Anthony Browne, George Bygley and Thomas Lucy who remained at the mill until 1787. From the 1830s the Sweetlove family was involved with the mill. In 1871 a Mrs. Batchelor was the “Master Miller employing five men and one boy, and in 1890 her nephew, Thomas Sweetlove, took a lease on the mill. Eventually the mill was bought by Henry Moore & Son, the last owners to operate the mill commercially. By 1928 milling ceased due to the competition from roller mills situated at the ports through which

The larger of the two mills was badly damaged during the Second World War when a Canadian tank ran into it that shows that one of them was on the present site. The other two mills were at Ash Ford on Cobham Tilt and at Downside. The earliest known written reference to a mill at the site of the present Cobham Mill is dated 1534 when it was owned, together with the Manor of Cobham, by the Abbey of Chertsey. Since then, there have been several mills on the site and one, probably wooden, was washed away by floods in 1799. Two buildings were erected in its place, the larger being a 4-stone mill used to produce flours and fresh bran. The smaller mill, which remains today, was completed in about 1822 for the production of animal feed. A succession of families has either owned or 42 JUNE 2016

grain from the U.S.A. and Canada was being imported. The larger of the two mills was badly damaged during the Second World War when a Canadian tank ran into it. In 1953 this part of the mill complex was demolished completely so that Mill Road could be widened. Throughout the 1980s several attempts were made to have the mill restored. The Cobham Conservation Group was particularly active during this time and set up a separate charitable trust, the Cobham Mill Preservation Trust. In July 1990 the Trust became the tenant of the National Rivers Authority, which was by this time the owner of the mill. The restoration work, which was carried out by

a dedicated group of local enthusiasts, including retired engineers, soon got underway. This work was completed in less than three years, and on the 13th of December 1992 the restored mill ground grain and produced flour for the first time in more than sixty years. Since then the Cobham Mill Preservation Trust has taken responsibility for the day-to-day care and maintenance of the mill, the milling machinery and the surrounding landscaped areas. The Trust organises the opening of the mill to the public from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. every second Sunday of the month from April to October. The milling of corn is carried out during these openings, and a short video presentation about the mill and its restoration is shown at intervals. The mill is situated on Mill Road just outside Cobham village centre.

on’t miss this collaborative exhibition as the Pavillion Artists return to Haslemere Museum to lead a group of local artists in an exciting exhibition and sculpture trail spanning the summer months. The exhibition will showcase the artistic talent in the area as well as drawing inspiration from the Museum’s remarkable collections. The show and accompanying events is designed to appeal to all age groups, with an opportunity to meet the artists, childrens’ workshops and an evening talk aimed at those more comfortable holding a wine glass than a paint brush to support the Museum in a Million campaign! The Pavillion Artists namely Anne Bowen, Jan Hite and Peter Searight, are all based locally and they have also invited Leon Hills, Terri Smart and Mark Swan to join them. They have taken inspiration from the exhibits in the Museum’s collection and interpreted these in their own styles and medium. Anne works predominately in oil on canvas and pen and ink and wash. She has travelled extensively living and painting in the Middle East, the USA and Europe, painting all subjects although specializing in equine studies. She has exhibited in Kuwait, Houston, Brussels, Santander in Northern Spain and regularly at venues in London. She has won prizes in the USA and London, and is an associate of The Society of Equestrian Artists. Jan is primarily a ceramicist, creating figurative clay sculptures, large handbuilt ceramic vessels, garden sculptures and sometimes cast works in metal resins. The plastic properties of clay allow experimentation with geometric forms and shapes. Jan prefers using simple glazes, which allow the method of construction to be apparent. She also produces a range of ‘pitfired’ and smoked pieces where the random colouration complements the crisp geometric forms.

She is fascinated by the feel of the clay, the adventure of experimenting with new techniques and the excitement of taking the finished article out of the kiln. Terri displays and sells her work at Guildford House Gallery on Guildford High Street and at many local Surrey galleries and galleries around the country. She is a member of several societies and exhibits at their shows and exhibitions, often creating items for these shows that are “a little bit different and not especially practical”. Mark Swan builds on the hard earned expertise of four generations of professional artists including an Edwardian Royal Academician, bringing modern sensibility to traditional materials. He studied sculpture at three art schools and at the feet of professional artists in London, the Netherlands and Italy, where he spent ten years living and working in Rome, Naples and Milan. Mark has worked on numerous commissions from the public, corporate and private sectors over the past 20 years, working within the exacting requirements of each project without compromising his high standards as a sculptor.

The UNHCR ‘Border Control’ Garden takes a more literal approach, portraying safety and sanctuary as a lush garden, surrounded by an arid landscape of barbed wire.

he BBC Proms have announced the programme for its 122nd season featuring more than 90 concerts over eight weeks, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. New Proms Director David Pickard introduces an innovative series Proms at... that explores spaces outside the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall. The series matches music to four venues across London with Shakespeareinspired works by Purcell at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in Southwark, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle at The Chapel, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the music of Steve Reich at the Bold Tendencies multi-storey car park in Peckham, and the return of the Proms to the Roundhouse in Camden with new work by British composer David Sawer. Four-hundred years since the death of Shakespeare, the Proms marks the anniversary with a broad survey of music inspired by the Bard, from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet to Hans Abrahamsen’s ‘let me tell you’ and extracts from Kiss Me, Kate. In the year in which the Olympics are staged in Brazil, the Proms celebrates the music and musicians of Latin America with performances from the São Paulo and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestras, pianists Martha Argerich and Gabriela Montero, conductors Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel, cellist Sol Gabetta, and Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who appears at the Last Night of the Proms. A vital part of the Proms mission remains, bringing classical music to new audiences; youth music-making and youth audiences are a major focus this year. The hugely popular CBeebies Proms return, and there will be two Proms devoted to BBC Music’s Ten Pieces II, part of a ground-breaking nationwide initiative for schools designed to open up the world of classical music to primary and secondary school children. In the year that we lost two musical pioneers, the Proms pays tribute to Pierre Boulez and David Bowie in two Late Night concerts. In the spirit of its founding vision to make the best music available to the widest audience, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and in 2016, BBC Radio 2 and Radio 6 Music each broadcast multiple Proms. three lightweight cars produced by Aston Martin for the 1949 Le Mans 24-Hour, it was built as a test-bed for the later production of the DB2. Fitted with the Claude Hill designed 2-litre, 4-cylinder engine, out of the three Aston Martins entered, ‘UMC 65’ was the only car to finish that year’s Le Mans, placing 7th overall, and 3rd in class. Following its works career it then enjoyed further racing success in the hands of various privateers, before entering the ownership of the current custodians in 1965. Driverless tractors and cow sensors; how technology is shaping the future of farming and agriculture investments Jonathan Raymond CFA, Investment Manager at Quilter Cheviot

T

he trend for investment in agriculture technology or ‘agri-tech’ is gathering pace. For investors looking at alternative options, the sector is certainly worth considering. For those unfamiliar with the scene it may come as some surprise that more than half of UK farms are estimated to already be using agriculture technology, which includes GPS guided tractors, sensor systems, robots and drones. Millions of pounds of government investment has gone into the sector in the UK alone in recent years, with the intention of putting us firmly on the agri-tech development map. In 2015, pioneering projects aimed at improving agriculture and food production at home and overseas received £17.8 million of funding under the Government’s Agri-Tech Catalyst. Technology is revolutionising farming, holding the potential to increase efficiency, boost profits and reduce environmental impact. On a global scale, it is viewed as part of the solution to the world’s food production challenge by helping to mitigate the risk of both glut and famine. To illustrate how agri-tech works in practice, we can look at some of the most commonly used technologies; GPS controlled tractors and animal sensors. GPS satellite guidance systems for tractors use satellite technology to scan fields and identify where pesticides or fertiliser need to be sprayed. The systems also enable precise steering,

ensuring perfectly straight lines and preventing over-lap. Sensor systems for livestock also greatly improve efficiency and can improve animal health and welfare. Cow sensors, for instance, are used to identify and contain cows that have come into heat. By monitoring body temperature and movement, the sensors can tell immediately when a cow is in heat and this data is fed into an electronic tagging system that separates the ‘in season’ cows from the rest of the herd. In terms of investments, there are two areas to explore when it comes to stocks that are exposed to the agri-tech theme. There are the companies that make the hardware and those that make the software. UK global technology company ARM is one example of a major player looking to shift its focus to new software

Already its technologies are being used in sensors that gauge watering and soil fertilisation for farmers. The market will continue to develop and the potential for advancement is huge. Agri-tech holds great potential for the farming industry and the firms that can turn themselves to the development of cutting-edge systems. ULTRAcel at the Light Touch Clinic

62 JUNE 2016

L

ight Touch was one of the first clinics in the UK to offer ULTRAcel skin tightening and it is one of our most popular treatments. This revolutionary treatment uses a combination of Ultrasound and Radio Frequency for a truly deep and effective lift. ULTRAcel is particularly effective for rejuvenating the lower face as it can tighten sagging jowls and remove double chins. This treatment can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve skin texture. One of the great things about ULTRAcel is that it is totally non-invasive. This means that patients can return to their regular routine straight after their treatment and there is no complicated aftercare.

How Does It Work?

ULTRAcel is a combination rejuvenation treatment which uses Ultrasound and Radio Frequency energy to rejuvenate all layers of the skin. After a thin gel has been applied, your medical practitioner will use the Radio Frequency head to deliver heat into the deeper layers of the skin. This causes the skin to tighten and produce new and remodelled collagen for a rejuvenated appearance. Next, Ultrasound waves are beamed to a controlled depth where heat energy tightens and contracts the underlying tissue. This deep tissue treatment will promote the production of healthy collagen for an intense and prolonged tightening. ULTRAcel delivers an instant lift which you will see when your Light Touch practitioner compares your before and after photographs. However, the lift will continue to improve over time and the full effect of an ULTRAcel treatment will be seen 3 months later.

How many treatments will I need? We invite all interested patients for a consultation with one of our medical practitioners to assess their suitability and put together a bespoke treatment plan. Most of our patients require just 1 treatment, but some may require additional treatments for the very best result.

Patient Testimonials

I can honestly say that I was rendered completely speechless as the result was immediate. I had a mini facelift in an hour with no pain and no downtime.

I had no pain and remember wondering if anything had actually happened but when I saw the ‘after treatment’ photos, the results were staggering. I had my jawline back my jowls had almost gone and my neck had improved!

FAQs

Is the treatment painful? ULTRAcel is a very comfortable treatment. However, you may experience a slight prickling sensation during the treatment where energy builds in the deeper layers of the skin. However, your practitioner will adjust the energy levels according to your feedback to ensure that the treatment is as pain-free as possible. When will I see results? Immediately after your treatment, your skin will look and feel tighter. However, this tightening effect will continue to improve over time as the old, tired collagen is replaced with new collagen. You can expect to see the optimum result at around 3 months.

or many, eyebrow products feel like an extra step to add to their make-up routine,” says Kristen Parker from beauty brand Wunder2. “We come across this quite often when we take our brow consultants on the road. But once they demonstrate the dramatic difference defining and shaping a client’s eyebrows can make, that person will then usually continue this step in their routine. Now women are beginning to realise the power of the brow,” agrees Lisa Potter-Dixon, head make-up artist and brow expert at Benefit Cosmetics, ahead of a major revamp of the brand’s brow offering, which already includes the country’s bestselling product, Brow Zings. “Groomed brows balance your face. If your brows start, arch and end in the right place, your eyes look more open, your cheek bones lifted and your nose slimmer.” Sounds good, doesn’t it? But where to begin? Here’s the expert advice on the three most common complaints and how to fix them, so you won’t be browbeaten any more...

“Sparse eyebrows is a complaint that we see discussed on social media very frequently,” says Parker. “Brows look most beautiful when they’re dense, rich and shapely. Fortunately, for those of us not naturally blessed with these, there are simple ways to achieve them. Using a pencil, such as Benefit’s Precisely My Brow, allows you to create believable hair-like strokes where you need them, due to the ultra fine tip,” recommends Potter-Dixon. “This is a light, gloss-like lippy, so it’s easy to apply, non-sticky and moisturises lips while adding a translucent coral colour - perfect for spring. “I’ve heard lots about the Tangle Teezer, but this was the first time I’d ever used one - and I’m a complete convert. It doesn’t look all that - a lightweight plastic bean with two layers of spines - but the proof is in the brushing, and this tamed my dry hair with far fewer strokes than its rival and was a dream on my wet hair. Blue and white’s a classic and timeless choice for bathrooms, because it’s fresh, crisp and evokes a relaxing coastal retreat... “It’s the subtle finishing touches which make a big difference, so consider taps and fixtures and fittings as the perfect way to refresh an existing sink or bath, and think about these carefully when choosing a new bathroom style,” says Chris Taylor, design expert at tap and shower specialists, Bristan. “Metallic finishes - gold, brass and and copper, through to brushed steel - are popular this year. Relax, RenewTouches and Refresh Luxury

We love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home.Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams.

B

athroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.

A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look. THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to

78 JUNE 2016

really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness. AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household. LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll holder and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

Tile with style

hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts. ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a

80 JUNE 2016

great way to add texture and interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours. CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures. SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.

Spruce up to sell Kitchens and bathrooms By Julia Gray, Press Association

I

f your kitchen units have seen better days and you don’t want to go to the expense and hassle of replacing them, give them an instant makeover by changing the doors and drawer fronts. This will transform the kitchen and needn’t be too expensive - B&Q (www.diy.com), for example, has a big range of affordable unit doors and drawer fronts, many available in store. If the units aren’t standard sizes or you want a more affordable option, simply paint the doors and drawer fronts to give them a new look, or glue thin MDF to the front to change the style and then paint them.

CLEAR THE CLUTTER

Cluttered kitchens aren’t a selling point. If lack of worktop space is a problem, think about how you can make what you have go further. Use microwave brackets to get your microwave off the worktop, or fit nice wall shelves to declutter the worktop. In a small kitchen, a hinged wall-hung table will give you more work space and somewhere to eat. If your kitchen has highish ceilings and you’re happy to change the wall units, tall ones provide extra storage. Failing that, stack attractive baskets or boxes on top of the existing wall units to make the most of the space, but don’t store anything heavy up there.

82 JUNE 2016

a riser rail on the wall to hold the shower head, and you have a shower that should add value and make your home more sellable.

SHOWER POWER

Somewhere to shower is essential for most buyers and if your bathroom doesn’t have a shower, it may be letting you down. There’s an inexpensive answer - replace the bath taps with bath-shower mixer taps, which are bath taps with a shower hose and head. As long as your bath is suitable for showering and the water pressure is good, all you need is a bath screen or shower curtain, plus

STEAM CLEAN

Grubby tile grout makes kitchens and bathrooms look grotty. White grout is easily marked by cooking splashes, shampoo, shower gel and the like, but there is a quick and easily solution steam-clean it. Use a steam cleaner like the excellent Karcher SC 3 (£159.99, www.kaercher.com/uk) and your grout should soon look like new. If the power of steam doesn’t work, or work sufficiently, you can apply grout paint to re-whiten the grout. In the worse cases, consider raking out the stained grout and applying more, but this is a big job and you may chip the tiles in the process.

FRESHEN UP

If you’re selling your home, giving tired walls and woodwork a fresh coat or two of paint will make a big difference to any room, but especially the kitchen and bathroom because they’re key rooms. Make sure you use a scrubbable paint so it stays looking good - special kitchen and bathroom emulsions are designed to withstand things like mould and steam and are available in all sorts of colours these days.

Top tips for: 5 choosing bathroom taps By Julia Gray, Press Association

theme

The different elements of your bathroom should go together, so if you have a period-style room, you need classic taps to suit, and if the look is modern, contemporary taps work best. Try the taps with the bathroom suite to check they’re the right style and size. It’s especially important that the basin tap is in proportion to the basin and won’t project water over the lip. Most bathroom taps are chrome these days, but other finishes are available. And don’t forget ease of use, especially for the youngest and oldest members of the family, who may have difficulty operating some types of tap.

home system

There’s nothing worse than a tap that produces little more than a dribble, so consider your home’s water system before you buy - something many of us forget to do. “This tends to be more important if you have a low-pressure water system,” says Browning. “If the tap isn’t suitable and the water flow is poor, it will take a long time to fill a bath.”

budget

You don’t need to spend a fortune to get good taps, but it can be a false economy to buy cheap ones because a tap has working parts and they can fail if they’re poor quality. If you soon end up having to get the taps repaired or replaced, you’ll wish you’d spent more on a product designed to last. “The quality of the materials and finishing of a tap is very important when it comes to good water flow, ease of cleaning and maintenance, and long-term

84 JUNE 2016

value,” says Simon Browning of Mira Showers (www.mirashowers. co.uk), which has its own range of taps - Aspects. “You can judge the quality of a tap by the warranty that comes with it, as well as aesthetic values: look for perfect symmetry and flat lines on the edges of the tap.”

mixer taps

Mixer taps, which have one spout, are a popular choice because they make it easy to get water at the desired temperature. They mix hot and cold water before it comes out of the spout, but some people prefer separate hot and cold taps - your bathroom basin will either have two holes for separate taps or one for a mixer. If your bath has two tap holes, you don’t have to have separate taps - most bath mixers are designed for two holes. However, not all baths come pre-drilled with tap holes - to avoid drilling them, go for wall-mounted taps, or floor-standing taps, which are often used with freestanding baths.

water pressure

Good water pressure is especially important for bathshower mixer taps. These taps are a cost-effective way to have an over-bath shower because you need bath taps anyway, so why not pay a bit more for taps that connect to a shower head and hose? Bath-shower mixers are useful for washing you, your hair, the dog and the bath itself, but good water pressure is needed for a satisfactory showering experience, so they can’t always be used instead of a separate shower.

Secondary Glazing – A Sound Decision? school playgrounds, noisy neighbours, local industry, loud annoying neighbours’ pets or busy high streets. What is “secondary glazing” I hear you say? Most modern secondary glazing is basically one pane of glass (or in rare cases two panes of glass) held within a powder coated aluminium frame (usually white), that is fitted on the inside of an existing external single or double glazed window, usually fixed within the existing window reveal, that sits on the internal window cill or window board, and is then sealed all round and trimmed as if it was an external window. Secondary glazing is available in several different opening styles: horizontal sliding; vertical sliding; sidehinged; lift-out and fixed. For optimum sound reduction performance secondary glazing should be installed at least 100mm from the existing window frame. The downside of this is that you do lose a substantial proportion of your window cill, but the upside is the dramatic reduction in external noise. Please don’t be conned into believing any secondary glazing system will sound proof your room, as it won’t. Sound can travel through pipes, gaps beneath the skirting, air bricks and through walls, especially if the cavities have not been filled with foam insulation. Standard secondary glazing is however the best value for money sound reduction product for windows and doors. If fitted correctly and in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions, then it is a far more effective sound reduction tool than replacement double or triple glazing.

A

lthough not offering all of the features of modern double or triple glazed windows, secondary glazing is still a popular option for many UK home owners, especially for those that live in listed buildings or conservation areas and for those whose properties are next to busy roads where noise pollution is a particular issue. Secondary glazing is not limited to dwellings that have restrictions, as many a home owner or tenant has benefitted both thermally and sound insulation wise by having secondary glazing fitted, where for example they may have particular issues with say aircraft noise, local 88 JUNE 2016

Yes it is true triple glazing offers more sound reduction than double glazing, as it has a 3rd pane of glass for sound to have to travel through, but again don’t be conned, as the improvement between double glazing and triple glazing is only about 2 decibels, not enough for you to notice the difference audibly.

If you are considering having secondary glazing professionally fitted, make sure you choose the right type of frame and glass for each room Also, secondary glazing makes a massive difference thermally, especially if your property only has single glazing, but even if it has double glazing, secondary glazing will help reduce your energy bills, as it will help retain the warmth generated by your heating system. Security wise secondary glazing adds a second barrier to any attempts by intruders to get into your property, especially if you ask for 4mm or even 6mm thick toughened safety glass to be fitted in your secondary glazing. In-fact you can kill two birds with one stone if you specify slightly more expensive 6.4mm laminate glass, as not only is this glass hard to break, it further reduces the amount of external sound that travels through your external 4mm glass panes due to the fact that it is of a greater thickness. Experienced companies who have installed secondary glazing for decades will be able to advise you on the best type of secondary glazing system and glass to suit your particular property or situation. They should also try to ensure the sections of the horizontal or vertical secondary windows mirror your exterior windows, so that from outside passers-by cannot tell that you have secondary glazing installed in your home. Although you can pay extra to have coloured aluminium secondary glazed frames, most secondary that is fitted comes in white as this tends to match in with the majority of peoples internal dĂŠcor. Single glazed horizontal sliding and vertical sliding window frames normally come set in a MDF timber sub-frame, which can then be painted to match the colour of the window reveals or rest of the room. Unlike external double or triple glazing, secondary glazing can be easily removed if required, with simple re-decoration all that is needed to restore the look of the window reveals. Secondary glazing from the inside may not be as nice looking as external windows, but the thermal barrier and sound barrier benefits it provides off-sets any aesthetic disadvantages.

There are many types of secondary glazing including very thin aluminium frames that can be screwed directly into the external frames. Whilst this is the cheapest form of secondary glazing, as these frames don’t have a subframe, it is the least effective both thermally and from a sound reduction point of view, as there is little or no gap between the external pane and the secondary pane, plus there is no thermal break. If you are considering having secondary glazing professionally fitted, make sure you choose the right type of frame and glass for each room, as in the vast majority of cases, you will want access to the external glass to clean or to be able to open any external vents to allow ventilation. Getting a proper job done secondary glazing wise could end up being one of the soundest decisions you ever make, as your property will then benefit from both sound reduction and lower energy bills.

Look after your back…

…Choose the right bed

E

very year up to 40% of the population – over 16 million of us – will suffer a bout of back pain and if you’re one of the unlucky ones, you will find that the state of your bed will quickly become a priority. A good bed, providing correct support and comfort, has an important role to play in relieving and preventing back pain.

and each different back problem also may require a different solution. The best approach is to research the options carefully, take time to try them out and choose what you personally find supportive and comfortable, regardless of labels or even price tags. • Narrow your choice down to two or three and then spend plenty of time lying on these in your normal sleeping positions. Five or 10 minutes should be the minimum for each bed – but feel

Don’t just buy a bed because it says it’s good for your back. A bed that’s supportive and comfortable is key. Here are some tips:

• Don’t just buy a bed because it says it’s good for your back. A bed that’s supportive and comfortable is key. But it is important to remember that people’s requirement for support will differ depending on their weight and build. • The term ‘orthopaedic’ generally just means an extra firm bed; it is not based on any medical or other common standard. Firmness is not determined by price, although comfort, luxury and durability and added features such as adjustability come with higher price tags. • There’s no single right bed to ease a back problem 96 JUNE 2016

free to spend half an hour or even an hour, if that’s what you want to do. • Look for a supportive rather than a hard bed. Do not assume that orthopaedic or firmer beds are the best option. Often a medium firm bed with proper cushioning is better. • A bigger bed will be of benefit both for the back pain sufferer and for their partners – with less partner disturbance. Zip and link beds are a good option if firmness preferences differ widely or where a future requirement for two separate beds is identified. • Think also about the height of the bed: can

you get in and out of it with relative ease? An adjustable bed might be an option if this is an area of particular concern – it also offers variable sleeping positions. • Many mattresses need to be turned regularly to ensure even wear and tear. If this is likely to prove difficult (and good quality mattresses are heavy!) then look for a mattress which does not need regular turning – there are a number of options of all types of construction now on the market • Pay attention also to choosing the correct pillow which must support the neck in alignment with the rest of the spine. Too many pillows thrust the head forward or sideways (depending on your sleeping position); too few allow the head to tip backwards: both create a crick in the neck. • Try and adopt a sleeping position which creates less physical stress on the back (e.g. lying on your side is better than lying on your front with your neck twisted to one side!).
