The season begins on Sunday 14 July with Heartbreak Productions’ adaptation of Emily Bronte’s timeless love story, Wuthering Heights. While under the care of the wealthy Mr Earnshaw, Heathcliff ’s relationship with the gentleman’s daughter, Catherine, blossoms into an unruly and passionate romance. Woodland Food & Art Retreat

Local Surrey businesses The Salt Box and Surrey Art School are combining art and food for a day beneath the trees at The Salt Box’s woodland glen on the beautiful Priory Farm estate in South Nutfield this July

T

he Salt Box opened their new premises on the Priory Farm estate in April 2019. Founded in Autumn 2017, founder Christian and Beckie have been curating pop-up feasts over fire and cookery workshops in and around Surrey and the south east of England. To date, they’ve welcomed over 2500 people around their shared dining tables, from woodland breakfasts to pop-up suppers at local vineyards, breweries and sculpture gardens. “The Salt Box is a celebration of locally sourced, seasonal food and open-fire cookery through the coming together of people beneath the trees, creating delicious food from nature’s humble ingredients.” says The Salt Box co-founder Christian Armstrong. ‘There is an undeniable power in the collective’, explains Beckie Wingrove, ‘since we started, it’s been all about collaborating with other like-minded local businesses. This year, we’ve joined forces with Ellie from Surrey Art School and hosted a variety of adult and family workshops combined with

2 4 J U LY 2 0 1 9

woodland feasts. Surrey is a hub of creativity, full of wonderful people doing incredible things.’ Founded by artist-teacher Ellie Green in May 2016, Surrey Art School is a creative sanctuary nestled in the heart of the Surrey Hills AONB. Founder Ellie believes strongly in the value of creativity to enhance our overall sense of well-being and curate a menu of courses and workshops that not only offer new skills but foster calm and confidence. The Woodland Food and Art retreat will begin with a Mindful Photography walk through the woods. As we walk, The Salt Box will be sharing some of their top tips for foraging too and we’ll gather some items to bring back to camp for later creative workshops. Once we’ve reached our woodland glen and refuelled on a cup of tea and a tasty treat, Ellie will guide us through a taste of Cyanotype printing, creating a beautiful blue print or two, to take home as a memory of this beautifully slow day in the woods. We’ll then come together for a fire-lighting and cookery workshop, preparing a feast for lunch. Join Beckie and Christian from The Salt Box and get stuck in learning how to create a delicious meal in a relaxed and informative environment, surrounded by the crackle and pop of fires with like minded people. After lunch, Ellie from Surrey Art School will lead a ‘zen’ drawing workshop in the woods, where we’ll be tuning in our ’emotional antennae’. Using Ellie’s methods you’ll find the whole process calming and meditative and come away feeling more confident in your drawing skills– a far cry from school art lessons! The fires will be kept stoked throughout the day and provide plenty of light refreshments alongside lunch – so there is nothing to do except show up with a healthy appetite and a creative outlook. Join The Salt Box and Surrey Art School and take a long Sunday stroll though creativity in this delightfully gentle Sunday retreat.

The tour will return to the Globe stage for Refugee Week (17 - 23 June) as part of a wider programme of events in which refugee artists, performers and audiences will all share their stories. In May, Women & Power will comprise performances, panel events and workshops to highlight the work and voices of women of all

Shakespeare and Poland, a two-week festival commencing 26 June, will celebrate Poland’s affinity and fascination with Shakespeare’s works. The festival will combine theatre, film, illustration and song, and will feature the remarkable Song of the Goat Theatre Company, with a rare opportunity to see their Songs of Lear. ear 12 and going strong! There’s no stopping the enthusiasm of 1000’s of people who flock to the beautiful beaches of Sandbanks, Dorset, UK on the second weekend in July. What has become known as “The Sandbanks Weekend” or “The Sandbanks Festival in the sporting and social calendar of the South Coast of England continues to attract the crowds year after year. Curiosity brought people to watch high quality beach polo at Sandbanks for the first few years but since then the parties, hospitality, fashion shows and now a beach rugby element, not to mention the Sandfest music festival on the Sunday, has kept the audience guessing and wanting more. The heavily watered beach arena provides a firm playing surface, and when surrounded by elaborate marquees, staging and grandstands The British Beach Polo Championships, otherwise known as 4 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

Sandpolo has become a must go to event. With a ticketed capacity of 5000 on site the polo can also be enjoyed by spectators along the beach from a raised sand platform. This gives polo, over the 2-day event, exposure to a wide variety of people and business platforms. The polo, played under the authority of the Hurlingham Polo Association, attracts 4 competitive medium goal teams of 3 players. Each team plays on both days with a further exhibition game on the Saturday. International teams are welcome and bring an interesting dimension. The event has welcomed Australian, South African, Argentinian, Irish and Welsh teams amongst others. A charity race is held between the 2 fastest ponies on each day in aid of the Household Cavalry Foundation. The fashion show, held in the main marquee, is the transition from the polo and sporting activities to the epic after-parties. The

Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw will host the closing Sandpolo Ocean Party on the Saturday. Tickets range from the Sandpolo Hospitality which gives holders access to the ringside dining marquee. Ty Temel and TML Events have recently teamed up with Sandpolo to run the event says ‘I am thrilled to be part of this unique venture. The location is priceless and the event format is sound. We have added some extra pizzazz this year that I know everyone will enjoy. Guests come along for many reasons whether it is the polo, the socialising, the parties, to see and/or be seen. Having been to the event for the last few years the one thing everyone has in common is that they all have a smile on their faces.’ Johnny Wheeler, the founder, is extremely grateful for the support Sandpolo receives from the 4 2 J U LY 2 0 1 9

Ladies’ Day is racing’s special day for the Ladies, a highlight of the summer social calendar. Every racecourse is transformed into a sea of colour, with bright outfits topped off by the most flamboyant of hats away from the champagne bar. Ladies’ Day is a real fashion show, with everyone trying to outshine the other girls to be the most glamorous. When dressing to impress, Ladies’ Day is one of the most difficult days of the year. It is Spring, but the weather is utterly unpredictable; but it certainly won’t rain on the fashion parade! Heels have to be worn, tottering around on the grass; and there is the small matter of

choosing the perfect frock to wow the judges in the Ladies’ Day competitions. As befits tradition, statement hats are the order of the day, with many race-goers keeping their most magnificent outfits for the occasion. Generally headpieces, hats or fascinators must be worn in the grandstand area - with hats mandatory in the royal enclosure. From the most glamorous designer millinery, to the ridiculous and oversized novelty, or indeed eccentric hats, Ladies’ Day has it all. The other important element, the people; your guests, be it business prospects, family or friends, you will have all the ingredients you need. Dress up and join the regal tradition and pageantry, join in the revelry, and enjoy a magnificent, and indeed memorable day of prestigious racing - and fashion.

EDUC ATION

Step into the most exciting school in England “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised”

A

lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for. Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eyecatching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time 5 4 J U LY 2 0 1 9

to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.” Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.” Who could ask for anything more?

COSMETIC DOCTORS COMPANY

Want to tighten your skin, reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines? Dr Peter Forrester now offers the option of combining Profhilo with INTRAcel, our proven and long-established radio-frequency microneedling treatment. Together they are an unbeatable combination. INTRAcel Dr Peter Forrester has been using INTRAcel skin rejuvenation for over 5 years. During this time he has witnessed the introduction of many other non-surgical skintightening treatments. Usually well publicised, celebrity endorsed and very expensive. They are promoted with before and after photographs showing results that are rarely achievable in practice. Dr Forrester continues to be impressed with the results of INTRAcel and believes that it offers a better and more cost effective result than most of the new ‘trendy’ techniques. INTRAcel cleverly combines the two established techniques of micro-needling and radio-frequency (RF) skin tightening. INTRAcel delivers short bursts of RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin. Recovery from an INTRAcel treatment is usually quick; at the end of the treatment the skin will be red like a sunburn sensation for a few hours, this will diminish after 1-2 days. A toned and tightened effect will be immediately noticeable after a treatment but the full effect will develop over the subsequent weeks. There will be improvement after the first treatment, however a course of 3 at 4-6 week intervals is recommended. Following this improvements will continue for up to 6 months as healthy collagen develops.

Profhilo

Profhilo is an exciting and unique rejuvenation product for the face, neck and décolletage, being unlike any other skin treatment on the market. Dr Peter Forrester always looks critically at new treatments and never jumps on the bandwagon of new treatments until he has had time to evaluate the

exaggerated claims made by some manufacturers and occasionally other practitioners. He has regularly used Profhilo since Summer 2017 and hence has had a good opportunity to evaluate its effects. He is now convinced Profhilo is a safe, effective and innovative product. Profhilo is designed to improve skin laxity, texture and lines by stimulating collagen and elastin production. This effect combined with increased

hydration will produce a subtle lifting and tightening effect. Although Profhilo is composed of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) it is not a filler and is aimed at achieving a very different effect from all the currently available HA fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero. It will not add excessive volume and hence there is no risk that a Profhilo treatment will result in an obviously filled or ‘pillow face’ look. It is manufactured by IBSA, a long-established and highly reputable Swiss company and was first launched in Italy in 2015 and subsequently in the UK in January 2016. Since launch there have been an increasing number of positive reviews and opinions in the media. A Profhilo treatment is quick and easy. Just 5 small injections of Profhilo are administered to each side of the face. Discomfort is minimal and other than the possibility for a small bruise there is no downtime. There will be an initial increase in hydration, but the main effects will build over the following weeks. A second treatment must be given 4 weeks later to maximise the beneficial effects.

cademy Salons Weybridge took home the top accolade in the national Salon Business Awards, against thousands of hair salons from across the UK. The judges, which included award-winning hairdressers Hooker & Young and Errol Douglas MBE, were impressed with every aspect of the salon and so awarded it Ultimate Large Salon status. Staff at the salon will now benefit from a host of PR and brand building opportunities, after the exclusive Grand Final at Sea Containers London on Monday night. Salon Business Publishing Editor Joanne Charlton: “Academy Salons has an outstanding business model, with a thorough education program, examples of efforts to look after staff ’s wellbeing and more. They were the deserved winners of this prestigious award.” At what is fast becoming one of the most sought after events on the hairdressing calendar, tickets to the Salon Business Awards Grand Final sold out with more than a week to go, creating an electrifying buzz for those that made it in. Salon Business Publishing Editor Joanne Charlton welcomed the crowd as they took advantage of the views across London’s skyline from the 12th floor hub – still a sight even with grey skies. The informal vibe, that reinvents the way awards are done, saw all 17 categories awarded in less than one hour, leaving more time for networking among salon owners, sponsors, and representatives from ivy league hair brands including TIGI, Schwarzkopf Professional and Paul Mitchell. 6 6 J U LY 2 0 1 9

Speaking after the event, Joanne said: “Salon Business Awards are growing year on year and the standard of entries continues to rise, even when we think that’s not possible. The hair industry is filled with such entrepreneurial spirit, dedication and hard work, and it is events such as this that drive that message home. Well done to all who entered with a special congratulations to the winners.”

I immediately dashed off to join her and en route got the call that we’d won! 10 hours later our beautiful baby daughter Amelia Liora was born. So I’m feeling very proud of my wonderful family, and my award-winning Academy family, it’s a night none of us will ever forget!!” – Salv Mulé Salon Director, Academy Salons.

The Ultimate Body Transformation,

Caroline Weller

from Life Magazines puts it to the test

Exclusively Created by Lisa Harris Skin Science Cutting edge technology for fat reduction, body sculpting, skin tightening and cellulite reduction say the adverts. It just sounds too good to be true and having tried various expensive fat busting treatments I can’t help being a tad cynical.

L

isa Harris, owner of, Lisa Harris Skin Science, tells me it does indeed work, and my ongoing battle with my over large flabby belly (that I like to blame on the menopause rather than overindulgence) makes me decide to give it a try. I started with a body consultation with Lisa who explained what would happen over the next six weekly treatments. Lisa, who has a clinic in Knightsbridge as well as Weybridge, has over 25 years in the world of beauty and is extremely informative. A few days later I arrive feeling optimistic at the Weybridge Clinic. My first appointment would last about two hours and involve a Detoxing Body Wrap and Non-invasive Cryolipolysis before moving on to my six weekly sessions of Lipofirm Pro, Eleanor would be looking after me and after changing into some rather unflattering paper underwear I settle down for my treatment. DETOXING BODY WRAP Lisa has already explained that it works by breaking down fat cells and aiding the bodying transporting released Triglycerides through the body’s natural waste processes allowing the contents of the fat cell to be naturally eliminated from the body. Being bio active, Detoxing Body Wrap is highly effective when used with technologies such as Cryolipolysis, or Radio Frequency. The wrap solution needs to be activated by heat so I was wrapped up first with polythene, then a foil sheet and lastly a thick blanket. Eleanor then left me to have a rather relaxing power nap! NON-INVASIVE CRYOLIPOLYSIS I’m told the Triglyceride in fat cells can be crystallised when taken to a particularly low temperature. Cryolipolysis uses controlled & advanced cooling technologies to target stubborn pockets of fat selectively and eliminate fat cells through a gradual process. The treatment wasn’t painful although my skin felt a little tender afterwards. Apparently it can take up to 2 months to see the full result however some clients begin to see results after 2 weeks.

6 8 J U LY 2 0 1 9

LIPOFIRM PRO Arriving at the clinic for my first Lipofirm Pro treatment my stomach definitely feels less bloated after my Wrap and Cryo session. Lisa strongly recommends following Cryolipolysis with Lipofirm PRO as it further reduces the fat cells, tightens the skin and tones the muscles resulting in even better results. After Eleanor applies a conducting gel to my stomach area the process begins using a combination of radio frequency technology and muscle activation to break down and disperse fat and cellulite whilst also firming the skin. The machine has an attachment that looks rather like shower head and has metal roller balls which make contact with your skin, and then delivers pulses as it is constantly moved around the area being worked on. A rather strange sensation, a bit like tiny rubber bands pinging onto the skin. I didn’t find it painful but it sometimes got a little warm. My treatment lasted about 30 minutes and after I got used to the sensation I found it quite relaxing. Lipofirm Pro works on a Triple Action Protocol; Release, Remove and Reshape. For the scientific side of things please contact Lisa and her team or see their website.

“Lisa strongly recommends following Cryolipolysis with Lipofirm PRO”

6 WEEKS LATER As the weeks went by I noticed my clothes were looser but I didn’t think I really looked any different, this is because the changes happen gradually. However, when Eleanor presented me with the photos she had taken at the beginning of my treatment and those at the end, bearing in mind I had not altered my eating and drinking habits, or participated in any additional exercise during my course, (despite this being recommended) the treatment has most definitely made difference and I’m delighted! It has even spurred me on to exercise and eat more healthily and even cut down the wine!

New bed wetting clinic opens at Spire Thames Valley Hospital Ms Katy Parker,

D

id you know, around 12% of seven to nine year-olds regularly wet the bed? And for a small number (1.5-2%), the problem can continue into their teenage and adult years.* At Spire Thames Valley Hospital, we have opened an exciting project - a night-time bed wetting clinic for children. Known as “nocturnal enuresis,” this is when a child unconsciously wets the bed whilst they’re asleep. Our nocturnal enuresis service is a nurse-lead specialist clinic to help children and young people get dry at night time. Managed by Ms Katy Parker, our Children and Young People’s lead nurse, the service will be available for children aged five years and above. The nocturnal enuresis clinic will be held at Spire Thames Valley Hospital, where all appointments are available after school, so children do not have to take time off to attend. Three main reasons why children wet the bed: • Their bladders don’t stretch enough to hold all the wee they make at night. • They produce too much wee at night. • They don’t wake up when their bladder sends a signal that it’s full.

Children and Young People’s lead nurse

There are many reasons why children are still wet at night-time, so we undertake a full assessment to design a tailored plan to suit them. We understand night-time bed wetting does not only affect the child; it affects the whole family. Bed wetting can be difficult and tiring to manage at home, so it’s important you can seek support from a specialist nurse - as parents this ensures you have all the relevant information and support to help you and your child become dry at night time. An appointment at our nurse-lead enuresis clinic will consist of a pre-assessment phone call, an information pack, an initial consultation and subsequent follow-up appointments for as long as you need them. Katy Parker is our leading Children and Young People’s Nurse with special interest in nighttime wetting here at Spire Thames Valley Hospital. As our Paediatric Lead, she is looking forward to welcoming children, young people and families into this clinic. If you would like book an appointment at our nocturnal enuresis clinic, simply call us on 01753 467616. *Data source: PCF Paediatric Continence Commissioning Guide

Perfect Concealer every time Make-up artists offer Katie Wright their pro tips for perfect application every time

F

or its ability to cover up even the nastiest acne breakouts, and to make us look wide awake when we feel like death, concealer is a true make-up marvel. But when it goes wrong? It can go really wrong. Anna Vakili, a contestant on this year’s Love Island, has taken a bit of a hammering on social media, thanks to her choice of under-eye make-up products. “Anna, babe, blend out your under-eye concealer... and for the love of all make-up gods do not use that much ever again,” was one of many comments on Twitter. “Concealer can be our best friend,” says make-up artist Frey-ja Barker. “However, if applied badly, it will not do us any favours.” So, whether you’re a reality TV star or not, we’ve got the pro tips you need, from prepping your skin and choosing the right shade, to expert application. Here are common concealer fails and how to fix them...

Not prepping your skin properly “There are two elements that help concealer last longer throughout the day - primer and powder,” says Marc Reagan, Hourglass global director of education, artistry and events. Our Veil Mineral Primer is our most popular product for a reason - it works on every skin type and skin tone and helps hold on to make-up, extending the wear all day. Apply a light layer all over the face, or on areas where you typically find breakdown of make-up during the day. Laura Hogsden, senior trend team make-up artist at Benefit, says eye cream is essential: “Using an under-eye cream before make-up will plump the skin surface, helping to iron out fine lines and giving your under-eyes an even smoother and more radiant finish.”

“As the skin under the eye is much thinner, opt for a cream concealer that is light in texture and highly pigmented, to hide dark circles whilst giving a smooth finish,” Hogsden says. “Using an overly textured concealer will appear cakey and only enhance fine lines. Benefit Boi-ing Airbrush concealer would work perfectly for this, as it has a light texture and consistency. Benefit Boi-ing Airbrush Concealer, £18.50

Choosing the wrong formula Your choice of concealer should depend on your skin concerns, Barker says: “Concealers for breakouts tend to be a thicker consistency and I would advise looking for more of a matte finish, as you do not want to draw attention to it. A great formula to check out would be Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer, which comes in a little pot. Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer, £24

“The Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick is super helpful when it comes to versatile coverage and portability,” Reagan says. “It can be used as an all over primary foundation, or as a concealer to even skin tone or cover up a stubborn blemish.” Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick, £42, Cult Beauty 7 4 J U LY 2 0 1 9

“The Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick is super helpful when it comes to versatile coverage and portability”

Concerned about spots and dark circles? “I think you cannot go too wrong with the famous Nars Creamy Radiant Concealer. Us make-up artists love it!” says Barker. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, £24

Using a shade that’s too light under the eyes “One of the biggest mistakes I see is people applying a much, much lighter colour than their natural skin tone. This can run the risk of looking grey or cloudy, especially in photographs,” Barker says. “To avoid this, try a colour corrector in a peachy tone for dark circles, followed by a lightreflecting concealer such as Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Concealer.” Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Concealer, £24

Not using a brush For precise application, a flat brush is best, Reagan says: “When applying concealer, try to use a concealer brush, like our No. 8 brush, for the most even coverage, and focus only on where you need it. Hourglass No. 8 Large Concealer Brush, £35, Cult Beauty “I like to apply concealer under the eyes with a ponytail eyeshadow brush, such as Laura Mercier’s,” says Barker. “It allows you to buff the concealer without looking heavy or cakey.” Laura Mercier Finishing Ponytail Brush, £26, Space NK

Using too much concealer When faced with purplish-black patches under your eyes, it can be tempting to slather on lots of product, but that’s not a good idea. “My advice is to always start with small amounts of product, because you can always layer more,” Reagan advises. “You want people to compliment you on your skin, not your concealer.” Barker says that, used sparingly, concealer can provide all the coverage you need, especially in summer when you don’t want to wear a lot of foundation. “Concentrate swiping in a cross formation through the face - a little in the centre of the forehead, down

the nose, the apples of the cheek and chin, then blend,” she says. “A great concealer that is long-wearing in the summer months would be Tom Ford Emotionproof.” Tom Ford Emotionproof Concealer, £42

Blending too much Conversely, if you’re too heavy-handed you can end up wiping away the coverage altogether. “Avoid blending or rubbing, or you’ll only end up revealing the problem area again,” Hogsden says. “Patting the concealer will hold the coverage and pigment, and to ensure a seamless blend into our foundation, you can use the warmth of your fingers to emulsify the concealer.”

Not setting your concealer “Once the concealer is blended, it needs a powder to lock it in place,” Reagan says. “Gently stipple or press Hourglass Veil Setting Powder on top of the concealer, which will ensure the concealer stays in place and remains bright and radiant over the course of the entire day.”

“You want people to compliment you on your skin, not your concealer”

Stay Cool & Fresh! with a Henley Ceiling Fan

A ceiling fan is a simple and effective way to keep cool in the summer. It can create a fresh gentle breeze without any of the unpleasant side-effects of air conditioning

I

n our temperate climate air conditioning (AC) is often overkill and also produces many unpleasant side-effects such as a dry throat, itchy eyes and transmission of diseases. A ceiling fan on the other hand is environmentally friendly as it uses a fraction of the energy. The latest DC fans use just 24w on full power which can move an amazing 18,000m3/h of air, which is 30 times that of a typical tower fan. A ceiling fan can be used not just in conservatories but in lounges, kitchens, dining areas and especially bedrooms since with their slow gentle stirring action at only 65rpm they are completely silent compared to noisy, humming tower, desk fans or AC. The movement of the air over the skin produces a typical wind chill factor of 4°C and the gentle breeze also feels fresher in an otherwise stuffy room. They can also draw in cooler fresh air from outside into a room even through a small open window – great for those still air, muggy days or if you only have one window and so cannot get any

Feeling Stuck with Your Property Management Company? You’re Not.

What is a property management company? When many people hear the phrase ‘property management’ they instantly think of high street lettings agents. While some do deal with flat lettings, property management companies do so much more than that. The easiest way to understand what a property manager does is by thinking about the communal areas in a housing development, private community or block of flats. While families and individuals are responsible for the areas that they directly rent or purchase, the communal areas, such as hallways, stairways and landscaped areas, are generally managed by a property management company. These companies arrange services such as gardening, cleaning and general repairs while on larger sites property management companies maintain underground parking, lifts, and on-site gyms. Who is HML? HML is one of England’s premiere property management companies and has been operating for more than 50 years. Not only do they do the basic property management described above, they also provide additional dedicated services which include placing property insurance, coordinating health and safety inspections, building surveying, concierge services, preparing budgets and helping with end of year financials. These additional services are tailored for each property, giving the developer or residents a tailored service, suited to their needs and wishes. Rebecca Wilson, HML’s Senior Business Development Manager, said: “Quite often residents don’t realise what property management companies do, and, that providers can be changed if the residents and owners aren’t happy with their current management company. In fact, it generally isn’t as hard as most people think.” By law in England, contracts with property management companies are set for a maximum term of a year, minus a day. That means that developments and housing estates can change their 8 6 J U LY 2 0 1 9

property management companies every year, if they are unhappy with their current service. Most contracts will be auto-renewed, generally with a three-month notice period. Rebecca continued: “We find that most people who are unhappy with their property management company think that they are stuck, with no options open to them. That simply isn’t the case. It is always worth looking into finding a management company that fits the needs of the property.” But how does someone go about changing their property manager, especially if they weren’t sure about where to look or who decides the manager for their property? “Residents might need to speak to the Director of their Resident Management Company, but if you are interested in finding out who to speak to and which process best suits your needs, you can always contact HML,” explained Rebecca. “We have a robust team of Business Development Mangers who are in place to help make the process of changing property managers as easy as possible.”

Perennially popular since they first appeared in Victorian bathrooms, investing in a cast iron bath will give you many years of enjoyment and add value to your property. cast iron baths in the UK. When you buy your cast iron bath from us you are investing in the highest quality product at the best possible price and all models are usually in stock for immediate delivery Unfortunately, not all cast iron baths on the market are of the same quality. There are many cheap imports available which do not have the same smoothed and primed exterior and have an inferior enamel which will scratch and stain with use.

Before you buy If you are positioning your bath as a freestanding focal point in the middle of the bathroom it may help to map out the space it will occupy using sheets of newspaper. This will help you visualise the impact it will have in the room and ensure there is sufficient space to move around the bath. If the bath is to be centrally located you will also need to talk to your plumber about routing the waste and the hot and cold water pipes under the floor. And finally, make sure you can physically get the bath into your house or flat by checking the width and height of the doors and the stairs.

Dispelling the myths It is sometimes implied that cast iron baths are not suitable for older houses. In Victorian times all baths were cast iron as it was the only material available and there is no record of one of these baths ever having fallen through the floor. It is a myth that the floor in the bathroom needs to be reinforced to accommodate a cast iron bath. A bath full of water and a bather is only the equivalent weight to four people. If you are happy for four people to stand in your bathroom without worrying that they will crash through the floor to the room below, then you can have a cast iron bath. Cast iron baths have a high-quality enamel interior which is far more resistant to scratching and staining than any acrylic or composite bath. You can view a wide range of cast iron baths at Aston Matthews’ Guildford showroom tel: 01483 478826 or astonmatthews.co.uk

How to choose the ideal table for a small dining space kept to their original, compact shape for everyday use.. There’s a variety of extending styles to choose from, but it’s important to invest in one that works best in tight spaces. Butterfly leaf tables extend quickly and efficiently, and folds neatly under the table when not in use. Depending on budget and room size, there’s a table for every room – think classic, rectangular tables to practical round centrepieces that lengthens out for dinner parties.”

Choose a table that can multitask

or homes without a dedicated dining area, working around a tight space for daily meals and entertaining can be a challenge. However, making smart furniture choices can easily turn a small dining space into a chic, comfortable focal point in the home. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, shares 3 helpful tips on choosing a table that works well in small dining spaces.

Pick the right table shape and style The heart of the home is where people come together for meals and conversations, so choosing a suitable dining table is vital, especially when space is at a premium. “Consider the room layout and obstacles before making a new purchase,” Rebecca advises. “The shape and design of a table might affect how it fits around the room, along with the number of chairs it can accommodate. Round tables are great for tight spaces, and their rounded edges reduce the risk of accidents for a more family-friendly home. Pedestal tables are also excellent space-savers; the central base frees up more legroom while also maximising floor space. When it comes to style, the possibilities are truly endless. A rustic table in walnut or grey wood lends a comforting presence and can be paired with practical wooden chairs, or styled along a chic, bistro-feel with comfy fabric seats. Or, for a modern take – glass tables are perfect for that extra oomph. These tables score big on style with different silhouettes and materials, from polished steel legs to statement wooden pedestals.”

Opt for an extending table

Small dining spaces will benefit from an extending table – the winning formula is its ability to lengthen and transform a space for parties and gatherings. “Extending tables are popular picks for most homes, but they’re extremely crucial in smaller homes and apartments,” Rebecca says. “These centrepieces are ideal for big gatherings, and can be 9 2 J U LY 2 0 1 9

Styling around a compact dining space also means investing in furniture that pulls double duty. “It all comes down to strategic planning and shopping smart,” Rebecca says. “Think about how the table will be used at home and where it’ll be placed, without throwing the rest of the space off-balance. Look for a sturdy centrepiece that multitasks as a handy kitchen counter, dining area or comfortable workspace. If smaller tables are the go-to here, opt for lighter builds that can be moved against a wall when not in use, freeing up valuable floor space.” www.furniturechoice.co.uk

stablished in 1990 by Peter Bowles, Original BTC began life as an Oxford based home lighting brand and has secured two further lighting brands; heritage marine lighting manufacturer Davey Lighting and LED lighting manufacturer Beadlight, under its umbrella. Exports account for 50% of the production, supplying both the retail and contract markets around the world with an emphasis on the hotel, restaurant and aeronautical industries. With a family history steeped in retail, manufacturing and design, Peter designs the company’s products in conjunction with his son Charlie who became Director in 2012. Original BTC, Davey Lighting & Beadlight each offer a diverse and unique range of lighting designs. All brands draw inspiration from Britain’s rich post industrialisation history as well as incorporating modern tastes and trends. Simple yet effective, the dome-shaped Hector was Original BTC’s first light produced in bone china and remains one of the brand’s best-loved designs. Today, founder Peter Bowles and Director Charlie Bowles use highly skilled, labour-intensive processes to create multi-faceted forms which explore, maximise and celebrate the material’s translucency, luminosity and versatility. Hand slip-cast at Original BTC’s Stoke-on-Trent bone china factory, the father and son duo’s innovative production techniques and commitment to local manufacturing have resulted in an ever-growing collection of British design classics. “From the designing and making of the mould to the complicated production process of the shades themselves, we’ve taken bone china to it’s absolute limits in size and form. The Christie, Hatton and Fin collections are tremendous accomplishments for all involved and we’re proud to show how technically brilliant British manufacturing can be,” explains Peter. www.originalbtc.com
