The world’s rarest cars in one of the world’s most exclusive settings
T
he Concours of Elegance proclaims itself to be “the most exclusive car park in the world”; a typically understated label for one of the classiest and most incredible motoring events on the global calendar. The venue this year is the breath-taking grounds of Hampton Court Palace; a royal setting which – with its incredible history and beauty – is the perfect pairing for the collection of rare automobiles set to arrive as part of the Concours this September. The focal point is a gathering of more than sixty unique or extremely rare cars, many of which will never have been seen before in the UK – let alone
all in one place. And, just like the palace itself, each car has a story to tell; the 1896 Arnold Benz Motor Carriage on display, for example, was the first car to ever receive a speeding ticket. The driver, Walter Arnold, was travelling 8mph in a 2mph zone and his car wasn’t preceded by a man on foot carrying a red flag – a legal requirement at the time. A policeman gave chase on his bicycle and fined Arnold for his recklessness. From 1922 is a Bentley 3 Litre, which was the first to ever race at the Le Mans 24 Hours race, kickstarting a run of wins for Bentley in 1924 and again in 1927 to 1930. Then there’s the Porsche

Over the course of the weekend many of the vehicles on display will start their engines to drive through the grounds of the palace and up onto the all-new central stage. Visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of some of the most important cars ever produced, while a team of experts enlightens the audience as to what exactly makes these vehicles so special.

ith the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s death just around the corner, visit Painshill in Cobham to experience the landscape as Jane Austen would have inside their ‘Georgian wonderland’. Clear in many of her novels, Austen’s love of the English landscape garden had no end. But it was also widely known that she expressed a deep appreciation for the beauty of the garden in her personal life too. In celebration of the novelist and her love of the English landscape, Painshill’s ‘Jane Austen Day’ offers a fun and interactive day out for all the family, with a unique opportunity to explore the 18th century landscape like never before. Painshill’s 158 acres of natural and historic landscape, enchanted follies and a Crystal Grotto, is the perfect setting to discover, explore and learn about one of the world’s most loved authors. n celebration of their 40th anniversary, Pranksters Theatre Company returns to Guildford Castle Grounds with a retro production of As You Like It by William Shakespeare set in 1977 - the year they were founded. Production dates 21st – 29th July 2017. Rosalind falls in love with the wronged Orlando and along with her cousin Celia, flees in disguise from a grey Jubilee and Punk London to find her exiled Father and a collection of eccentric characters in the wilds of Epping Forest. There she meets Orlando again and under the guise of a young man, counsels him in the art of love. Featuring some of Shakespeare’s best-loved characters where all the threads are untangled at the end with a touch of magic, As You Like it never fails to entertain. This wonderful tale of romance, cross-dressing and confusion will take you back to the 70’s alongside many familiar songs in the beautiful setting of Guildford Castle Grounds. Perfect for the whole family where you can bring a picnic, sit back and enjoy an evening of open-air entertainment. £60 million worth of supercars raise money for children’s charity A
massive 150 supercars with a combined value of almost £60 million took part in The Supercar Event at Dunsfold Park on the 24th and 25th June, raising more than £100,000 for The Children’s Trust to help children with brain injury. Thousands of visitors paid to take a passenger ride around the famous Top Gear track in supercars, including a Ferrari F40, McLaren 570GT, Ferrari 488 Spider, Ariel Nomad, Mercedes AMG GTR, Ferrari 458 Speciale, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Lamborghini Aventador SV and a Pagini Huarya that on its own is worth a cool £2 million. he Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Garden Wisley is hosting a weekend full of cultural delights during its Arts Fest event (15-16 July) within the beautiful surroundings of the garden. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in spectacular performances of music, magic, poetry, puppetry, dance, storytelling, and theatre by visiting the themed zones throughout the garden. New attractions for 2017 include enchanting operatic performances in The Glasshouse, and skilled sand sculpture artists who will run workshops, providing visitors with the opportunity to try the techniques for themselves. Show stopping acts not to be missed include a student dance performance of the world-famous ballet ‘The Nutcracker’, and a mini rock opera. n 2016, Abi Roberts became the first UK comedian to perform in Russia - in Russian! Now, in 2017, the centenary of the Russian Revolution, she’s here to shed some light on our continental neighbours and tell us what side of a blini is buttered. Just pipping Eddie Izzard to the accolade, Abi’s world first came at the bilingual Moscow Comedy Bar and Club. This was her first visit since an intensive period of trips to Moscow in the 1990s that came about because of her studies and because her dad was a diplomat. During this time, Abi become an opera singer at the Moscow Conservatoire, a member of the Russian Orthodox Church and an expert on how matches and sawdust are vital to the country’s plumbing when it’s minus 17 degrees outside! Abi’s return to Moscow was a crash course in new Russian culture. Noticing signs of wealth everywhere, and cars much evolved since the days of the Lada, Abi found the trip bewildering and a steep learning curve. Join Abi as she tried to get to grips with a heady mix of being monitored, crossing the paths of gangsters, overwhelming hospitality, fear of Putin and the strange disappearance of street kiosks. Anglichanka (Englishwoman) climaxes with a spectacular sequence where Abi recounts almost performing opera for the Russian President and how she narrowly escaped with her life during the

attempted military coup of 1991. Abi Roberts and her big hair exploded onto the stand-up comedy scene in 2011, after a number of years as a session vocalist and cabaret performer. illions all over the world have been captivated by powerful, athletic horses seemingly flying over enormous multicoloured fences as show jumping continues to grow in popularity. This summer, thousands will get up close and personal with some of the most recognisable names in the sport, as for the first time ever, the spectacular Royal Hospital Chelsea plays host to Longines Global Champions Tour and Global Champions League. Team GB’s 2012 Olympic heroes such as Scott Brash and Ben Maher and legendary John Whitaker will be battling to win unprecedented prize money at the iconic location on the banks of the River Thames. The event takes place from 4th-6th August 2017 and will be the 12th leg of the prestigious

Saturday and Sunday, July 1 and 2 will see them stage the biggest show they have ever produced – as well as offering a huge variety of free events across the town. With an all-star line-up of comics, Gag House Comedy Superstars (Saturday 1 July, 8pm G Live main stage) brings four mighty comedians to perform in Guildford. Favourites on the comedy circuit, Mark Dolan (Channel 4’s The Jump), Paul Sinha (ITV’s The Chase), Zoe Lyons (BBC2’s Live At The Apollo) and headliner Joe Lycett (Channel 4’s 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown) will take to the stage, dedicating their Saturday night to your amusement.

With an army of 1.6 million subscribers, YouTuber Kaushal gets asked a LOT of questions about make-up. But the one she gets asked the most? How do I find the right foundation? “Because there are so many foundations on the market, it can be a bit overwhelming - or underwhelming - sometimes,” she says. Finding ‘the one’ can be a lifelong quest, but luckily Kaushal has four key pieces of advice to help you find the correct shade, whatever your skin tone. Follow these steps to find your perfect foundation...

1. Try before you buy “I always say if you’re going to get a high-end foundation, get a sample before you buy it, because the last thing you want is to spend £30 on a foundation that clearly doesn’t match you. And if they are going to give you a sample, try to get a shade lighter and a shade darker, depending on your undertone.”
2. Check the shade in natural light “If you are getting tested and you need a foundation ASAP, make sure you see what it looks like in natural lighting outside. The lighting in the stores is heavily artificial so anything can look good under those lights.”
3. Do a flash test “Always do a flash test, even if it’s just on your phone, to see if you get any flashback [white makeup marks on your face].” Yep, that means an instore selfie (or ask nicely and the counter assistant might help you out).

interest is the site where decoristas love to lust over luxury. Gabrielle Fagan discovers its style winners and inspiring ideas If you’re rocking a Seventies vibe by piling on the pot plants for an outdoor/indoor theme, working a boho vibe with a high-back rattan peacock chair, or keeping it simple with eco-friendly pared-back kitchen designs, then you’re ahead of the decor game. Those are the fashion-forward trends identified by Pinterest, the social media site where millions find inspiration for their homes, and which has recently revealed its new Best of Pinterest UK Interior Awards, whose judges included designers Matthew Williamson and Kelly Hoppen. “Pinterest is the ideal tool for creatives,” says Hoppen. “I only wish this inspirational and informative platform was around when I first started in design 40 years ago. It’s so interesting to be able to look at the trends and styles of people worldwide and how each individual, culture or country interpret those.” We’re all getting braver about experimenting in our homes according to Adele Cooper, UK and Ireland country manager at Pinterest. “The Interior Awards highlight that people are adventurous with their home decor ideas and confident to experiment with colours, textiles and even DIY to personalise their living spaces.”

Here are the key trends that emerged from the awards... DREAMY & DIY Sustainable home decorating is on the rise, with Britons growing more confident about DIY and making the most of inexpensive materials and discovering plywood kitchens (which recorded 182% more saves than last year). Homes are no longer running with one colour scheme, with printed wallpaper recording 250% more saves than last year and navy bedrooms up 182%. BRING OUTDOORS IN Houseplants - the hip decorating statement of style from the late Sixties and early Seventies - are back in vogue and create a lush outdoor/indoor vibe. They’re particularly popular for living rooms and for conjuring an exotic, steamy atmosphere in a bathroom, especially hanging plants in a shower (up 302% on last year). Houseplants are in tune with our current passion for embracing nature and its colour palette - green is leading the colour chart this year and Pinterest research showed it’s a favourite for tiles. GET THE LOOK: Classic Victorian green tiles are having a moment as they’re a favoured choice for kitchens and bathrooms. If you’re on the move - a renter rather than an owner - you need savvy, temporary solutions to smarten a space. Reusable wallpaper (up 344% on last year) is a home decor hero and can stun as a statement on one wall, glam up a chest of drawers, and is becoming a firm favourite for children’s rooms. Bulky wardrobes eat space but simple clothing racks, rails or ladder storage are slimmer, and your favourite clothes can become an eye-catching display. Turn on the style cheaply by jazzing up a room with new legs for a sofa or handles for cupboards, and use vintage trunks and baskets for storage. GET THE LOOK: Florals are an easy way to add colour and pattern and Rosentapete by Coloray has a design of bold pink blooms on its self-adhesive reusable wallpaper, £96.73 a roll, DaWanda. One of my favourite wallpaper companies is Sian Zeng and it has a London Tree fabric sticker, £195, which would please adults or children alike. A fan of Pinterest and Instagram, he’s always one click away from his favourite designer furniture outlets. “There’s an increasingly design-literate male audience, who are looking for product aesthetics as well as functionality and performance, from technology to the home,” says Naomi Shedden, senior trend analyst at Trend Bible. “Interior design is becoming a more democratic process, where a balance has to be achieved between the preferences of all family members. We’re seeing a move towards simpler, cleaner and more modern trends as a result, but balance is key. “The trend for a grey palette is a classic sign of this move towards a more masculine look, which can be softened through accessories and lighting. We’re even seeing a move towards including softer shades like pink, to create a balance of warm and cool tones. atherine Richards Design is a vibrant interior design consultancy, cutting a dash with their unique style, intelligent approach to colour and passion for good working relationships with their clients. Attending their bi-annual event in May at Hendall Manor Barns in East Sussex was an exciting and unusual way to spend an afternoon. The audience were entertained with a fascinating talk from Katherine and a presentation from the internationally acclaimed Designers Guild. The space was filled with stunning exhibits, all designed by Katherine Richards and her team and displayed all the latest fabric and wallpaper collections from dozens of designer names. Champagne was served with amazing canapes and Katherine and her designers were all extremely approachable and enthusiastic, socialising with the guests. With a wealth of design experience in a variety of mediums, Katherine spent some years working in London as a theatre stage and costume designer. Her flair, together with the belief that ‘anything is possible’ and her fascination with homes and the way in which her clients choose to live in them is what drives the projects for which KRD are commissioned. “One of the joys of this job is sharing ideas with my clients and seeing their faces when they realise that this is something they would never have considered”, says Katherine. Training, knowledge and experience in working with colour is another of her skills. “Understanding
colour and the way in which it works, knowing how to help someone choose the right colours for their home and making sure that after we have left our clients feel completely comfortable and at ease with their choices, is our skill”, she says. “I think this often requires an expert to introduce new thoughts on colour; thoughts that might never have been considered before, which can be really exciting! We are all guilty of occasionally sticking within our own parameters and what can be our limiting belief as to which colour works in this room or that, but with the assistance of a trained pair of eyes you might be very surprised to find out what can happen! Hazlemere Windows Building A New Showroom in Welwyn Garden City H
azlemere Window Company are making a considerable investment by totally refurbishing their Hertfordshire showroom inside Unit 10 Mundells Industrial Centre on Little Mundells in Welwyn Garden City, which several years ago was the location of Housemaster showroom, a brand Hazlemere incorporated into the Hazlemere Group back on 18th November 2013. Hazlemere had previously completely renovated the old Housemaster showroom within Unit 10 back in early 2014, adding many new home improvement products. However, given there have been so many positive product changes in products in the 3 years since

Bespoke Shading Solutions A Family Business It all started in the back room of a hardware store in the late seventies, when David Pratt decided to start selling blinds within his already successful timber business in Broadstone. Whilst incredibly ambitious, David could never have imagined that this extra merchandise would one day transform into a multi-million pound business. Innovation At Its Finest When I asked ‘Mike Lingham’ (head of sales) what his favourite project to date had been, he went on to explain their recent work up in London, for the hugely successful Recording Studio. Broadview had initially been invited to rehabilitate their roof terrace, by replacing their somewhat worn umbrellas. Only when they visited the site their creative team was unanimously struck by a different vision – something that would totally transform that space. Regularly used as an entertainment center for guests and recording artists, Broadview created a design concept that would renovate the terrace into the ultimate outdoor party pad, that could still stand up to the erratic British forecast. Broadview planned, designed and fitted a state of the art awning unlike any of it’s kind.
Luxury Products For Your Home I was under the illusion that the kind of products that commercial clients got would be different to those for residential jobs, but Mike explained, “There is no difference between the products we use in people’s homes, to the ones used in our large scale commercial projects – just more of them”. So ultimately the blinds in your home could be identical to those in a five-star hotel or even a recording studio for that matter – swanky windows indeed.
Shading On Trend Mike informed us that the way forward was very much about ‘automation’. It’s been a pretty innovative decade in terms of the progression of technology and it hasn’t bypassed the shading industry either. Supposedly in the next 5-6 years nearly all window shading will be battery powered, or in one way or another automated, as predicted by Mike and evidently the benefits are endless.
