This month is one for those who like the finer things in life. We have selected three exceptional wines from our cellar that are truly a collector’s dream. 1. 2008 Houghton CW Ferguson Cabernet Malbec Great Southern Australia
The Frankland River region, situated at the North West corner of the Great Southern in Western Australia, is home to Houghton Wines. Houghton CW Ferguson Cabernet Malbec is a tribute to Charles William Ferguson, a pioneer of the Swan Valley region. Charles (Charlie) Ferguson was the revered proprietor, manager and winemaker at Houghton’s from 1875-1920. The Houghton CW Ferguson Cabernet Malbec 2008 is the second ever release of this wine and is produced from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Malbec. This elegant wine has aromas of black cherry, complemented by hints of spice and dark chocolate. Rich and juicy flavours of mulberry with velvety tannins make this wine an ideal accompaniment to braised beef. Best enjoyed now or will reward greatly if carefully cellared for up to five years. £24.99
2. 2010 Hardys Thomas Hardy Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra McLaren Vale Margaret River
Founder of Hardys Wines, Thomas Hardy’s vision was to “create wines that will be prized in the markets of the world”. Ever since, five generations of the Hardy family have been devoted to keeping his passion and pioneering spirit alive. First released in 1989, the Thomas Hardy Cabernet 1 4 J U LY 2 0 1 6

Sauvignon is the pinnacle of Hardys winemaking and viticulture and is a fitting tribute to the founder. A full-bodied style that delivers a complex, rich spectrum of dark fruits with mulberry and violet tones. The wine has impeccable length driven by fine acid; the tannins give structure, whilst the oak provides an elegant finish. £49.99
3. 2012 Robert Mondavi Winery Reserve Pinot Noir Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery at the To Kalon vineyard in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand among the world’s finest. A notoriously fickle and challenging variety to grow, the Mondavi Pinot Noir has found in an ideal location on the foggy, wind-swept slopes of the Carneros region in southernmost Napa Valley. An aromatically expressive wine with exceptional weight and presence, the 2012 Pinot Noir Reserve highlights the depth and complexity of this noble variety. Scents of black plums and redcurrants are woven together with the fresh aroma of early-season blackberries and earth, supported by a subtle spice of French Oak. £34.99 THE DETAILS 2 Heath Road, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 8TB Phone: 01932 428604 1853wineshop.com

he Surrey Hills Challenge (SHC) charity event is set to be one of the biggest sporting challenges in Surrey. A series of running and walking events will take place on the beautiful landscape of the Surrey Hills, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on Sunday 25th September 2016 raising funds for the Community Foundation for Surrey and the Surrey Hills Trust Fund. People of all ages and fitness can participate in four different running and walking challenges. The Greensand Way will form the backdrop to the event where the super fit can face the ultimate challenge with ‘The Ultra’, a 60km run, ‘The Half ’, no ordinary walk (or run) in the park of 21km, ‘The Ten’, a fast and furious 10km or ‘The Five’, a family challenge 5km event. All four routes encompass some of the most picturesque views across the Surrey Hills along the Greensand Way and are designed to test participant’s stamina and strength. The family events of ‘The Five’ and ‘The Ten’ will take place at Hurtwood; a wellknown area for walkers and runners. Starting at 10:00, ‘The Five’ is a 5km course which covers wide open tracks onto footpaths and woodland trails through the peaceful and heather covered landscape. ‘The Ten’ is two laps of the 5km course and for families, walkers and runners to challenge themselves just that little bit more. The Ultra and Half participants will join the 5km loop, creating a supportive and fun atmosphere as all four events descend onto Hurtwood. Our competitive routes for the fittest walkers and runners are The Ultra, 60km starting at 06:00, and The Half, 21km starting at 09:00. The Ultra route starts in the picturesque town of Haslemere and follows the Greensand Way which originates in the heart of Haslemere and weaves out of town towards the infamous Devil’s Punch Bowl, a large natural amphitheatre. Participants will scale Gibbet Hill, Wormley Hill, Hydon’s Ball, Hascombe Hill, Pitch Hill, Holmbury Hill, Leith Hill and finally Bury Hill. Each one of these hills gives a unique and varied view of the Surrey Hills.

The 60km Ultra is not for the feint hearted with the total climb of the route being the equivalent of climbing Mt. Snowdon in Wales, the highest point in the British Isles outside of the Scottish Highlands. The Half joins the Ultra at the Duke of Kent School with their first challenge coming in the form of scaling Holmbury Hill. From here they head towards Leith Hill, the highest point along the Greensand Way at 954ft, with impressive views to back this up. Both the Ultra and the Half are mainly on footpaths and bridle paths with only the occasional road sections or crossings making the course free flowing, leaving you with a sense of adventure and achievement. Dorking marks the finish line for those taking on the Half and the Ultra. As well as support from our dedicated Events Team before and during the event, participants will also receive a medal, chip timing, aid stations, professional first aid cover, car parking, WCfacilities and sports massage. The event is to raise funds for the Community Foundation for Surrey and the Surrey Hills Trust Fund. Fundraising isn’t compulsory but we are encouraging everyone to take up the additional challenge to fundraise and support local communities. Forced into exile by their own families, heroine Rosalind and Orlando, a young gentleman of the kingdom, venture deep into the Forest of Arden where they encounter ‘The Golden Age’; a mesmerising travelling circus which has taken up residence beneath the canopy. Masquerading as Ganymede, Rosalind embarks on a journey of love lessons and romantic trickery, before stumbling across one of Duke Senior’s noblemen, Jacques, who fully embraces the circus folk and continually reflects on the futility of life and love as a motley fool. A story of transformation, ‘As You Like It’ challenges conventional ideas of love and lust, blurs gender roles and muses on the absurdity of life in this brilliant pastoral comedy. The play unfolds in Britain’s finest ornamental garden and concludes extravagantly with a triple wedding where the audience and company are encouraged to come together in a boisterous, acrobatic, musical celebration indulging in food and drink from the finest local suppliers. ‘As You Like It’ will celebrate the best of the British summertime with a delicious BBQ served during the final wedding scene provided by award-winning caterers Leiths, whose mouth-watering menu will provide a sensational finale to the performance. n this week in July 1966 England were winning the World Cup. But history was also being made in Windsor where the first ever rock festival in Britain was being held. Some call it the first ever rock festival in the world. The line up at Windsor marked a huge change. It moved from being blues and jazz to bands like The Who, the Small Faces and the Yardbirds featuring Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Eric, Ginger and Jack also played, becoming world-beaters Cream. Now, five decades later, homage is being paid to that festival. A special anniversary concert – On Track For Summer – is being held at the same venue, the Royal Windsor Racecourse. Donovan, the folk/rock troubadour who personified the sixties, headlines on Saturday with all of the hits – Mellow Yellow, Catch the Wind,
Jennifer Juniper, Atlantis and many more. He is joined by some of the biggest names of the era – The Manfreds (with Paul Jones and Mike D’Abo), Chris Farlowe, PP Arnold and The Move amongst others - a cast of sixties originals, the people who made it all happen. The Manfreds with Paul Jones and Mike D’Abo had 13 Top 10 hits, three UK No 1s and two US No 1s. Their music was a soundtrack to the time. Chris Farlowe had the No 1 single with Out Of Time, PP Arnold released The First Cut Is The Deepest and Angel Of The Morning, Cliff Bennett made Got To Get You Into My Life. It was The Move’s single Flowers In The Rain that launched Radio 1 and a string of hits followed. On the day Davy O’List (The Nice) will play a tribute to his late band mate Keith Emerson and the unstoppable Geno Washington also performs. Mollie Marriott honours her late father, Small Faces’ Steve Marriott, while Beth Rowley will play a special Christine Perfect/Fleetwood Mac influenced set. The cast of ‘All Or Nothing’ also put in an appearance and host for the day is BBC Radio 2’s Alex Lester. Concert goers are being encouraged to dress in the style of the times...to make it a real 50th birthday party! There will be a presentation to the charity by 1966 World Cup winner George Cohen. The Royal Windsor Racecourse is the perfect venue for the two-day festival. It has a good choice of transport to the venue (even chartered boat hire from Windsor Town Centre) and all the hospitality that the Racecourse offers. Gold circle tickets are available with guaranteed picnic style seating adjacent to the stage and standing room on the grass areas alongside plus a pass to the special artists’ bar. Other VIP packages are also available. Tickets for the weekend are on sale now and single day tickets start at £39 with ‘early bird’ weekend passes from £60. They are available from www.ontrackforsummer.co.uk. THE DETAILS Royal Windsor Race Course, Maidenhead Rd, Windsor, SL4 5EZ. ••••• Both days start at 12 noon and events finish at 10.30pm.

BBC Proms 2016: from Boulez to Bowie Friday 15 July – Saturday 10 September
T
he BBC Proms have announced the programme for its 122nd season featuring more than 90 concerts over eight weeks, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. New Proms Director David Pickard introduces an innovative series Proms at... that explores spaces outside the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall. The series matches music to four venues across London with Shakespeareinspired works by Purcell at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in Southwark, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle at The Chapel, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the music of Steve Reich at the Bold Tendencies multi-storey car park in Peckham, and the return of the Proms to the Roundhouse in Camden with new work by British composer David Sawer. Four-hundred years since the death of Shakespeare, the Proms marks the anniversary with a broad survey of music inspired by the Bard, from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet to Hans Abrahamsen’s ‘let me tell you’ and extracts from Kiss Me, Kate. In the year in which the Olympics are staged in Brazil, the Proms celebrates the music and musicians of Latin America with performances from the São Paulo and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestras, pianists Martha Argerich and Gabriela Montero, conductors Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel, cellist Sol Gabetta, and Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who appears at the Last Night of the Proms. A vital part of the Proms mission remains, bringing classical music to new audiences; youth music-making and youth audiences are a major focus this year. The hugely popular CBeebies Proms return, and there will be two Proms devoted to BBC Music’s Ten Pieces II, part of a ground-breaking nationwide initiative for schools designed to open up the world of classical music to primary and secondary school children. In the year that we lost two musical pioneers, the Proms pays tribute to Pierre Boulez and David Bowie in two Late Night concerts. Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo, opens and closes the festival, and in the 50th anniversary year of

his first appearance at the Proms, Bernard Haitink conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the London Symphony Orchestra in what will be his 88th Prom. In addition to the six BBC Performing Groups, who are once again central to the festival with a total of 32 performances across the season, the rich wealth of the UK orchestral landscape is on show, including performances from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Hallé, London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras, Philharmonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra and many of the UK’s chamber orchestras and ensembles. In the spirit of its founding vision to make the best music available to the widest audience, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and in 2016, BBC Radio 2 and Radio 6 Music each broadcast multiple Proms. Audiences will be able to watch the Proms on BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, CBBC, CBeebies and BBC iPlayer. Proms Extra, the Saturday-evening magazine show, returns to BBC Two for its fourth season. The Jockey Club has been bringing in new audiences for their sport by using their world-class facilities as outdoor music venues, putting on show-stopping headline performances by some of the world’s biggest artists. Jess will also be donating a portion of her fee to the charity ‘Retraining of Racehorses’ of which The Jockey Club Live will match. Also at Sandown Park are pop-rock trio Busted who are performing together for the first time in over 12 years this summer. It’s the reunion they said could never happen even the members themselves have admitted it. But Matt, James and Charlie will be playing all their greatest hits together live – among them the simply huge, unforgettable smashes ‘What I Go To School For’, ‘Crashed The Wedding’, ‘Air Hostess’ and ‘Year 3000.’ Busted are one of the biggest home grown pop acts of the 21st century with an incredible five million record sales, two 4-times platinum albums and four number one singles to their name. “J
takes the shortcut to longer hair in minutes
ust my usual trim, please,’ is what I’d asked for. Twenty minutes later however, and half my hair was staring back at me from the salon floor! I’ll admit; I cried a bit. W ith some big summer diary dates approaching, I wanted my hair back - and fast. “Extension Professional’s Clip-Ins were the convincing SOS to my impromptu chop. The creation of hair guru Louise Bailey (basically the David Copperfield of extension wizardry), these aren’t your average clip-ins. Housed in a luxe white ‘hair closet’ box, the clip-ins are applied as two simple parts, rather than lots of fiddly strips: a
double-wefted bottom row for major thickness, and a single-wefted top row to seamlessly disguise where real and faux hair meet. Both wefts are pre-cut so they’re thinner at the ends, which makes them look and ‘behave’ more like real hair. Louise expertly colour matches my hair to the extensions, so that even I can’t tell which is which. “She gets to work sectioning my hair and backcoming along the roots, to give the two clip-in wefts some extra grip and prevent sliding. After 10 minutes, and a quick blast with the hairdryer to give the extensions some movement, I’m the proud (temporary) owner of some insanely glam, tumbling
locks. Like my old hair, except 10 times better, these clip-ins give you Rapunzel-like hair for daytime (sleeping in them isn’t advised). Now I can happily switch between long bob and red carpet hair in the time it takes to paint my fingernails.” Extension Professional 17-inch Clip-In Hair Extensions, available in 21 shades, £165 (veryexclusive.co.uk). he best kitchens don’t just look beautiful, but they behave beautifully too. That’s what international interiors company Neptune believe, and it’s a belief that’s felt in every inch of its exquisitely crafted kitchens. Timeless in style, thoughtful in design, uncompromising in quality, these are kitchens to last a lifetime. Founded in 1996, Neptune is an award-winning British interiors and lifestyle brand with stores across the UK and Europe, including our very own in the heart of Weybridge. For those who are yet to discover Neptune, theirs is a world of beautifully hand-crafted furniture, textiles and accessories for the home and garden. Design wise, they’re perhaps most known for kitchens with their heirloomworthy dressers not far behind. Their trademark ‘look’ is British. Refined, simple, sturdy, and with an almost obsessive attention to detail. And they’re certainly most respected for their commitment to craft and quality. Never will you find chipboard in a Neptune piece, nor will you see MDF, ever. Put simply, they make things they’re proud of, and want you to be too. Neptune’s kitchen collection consists of four signature designs: Chichester, Suffolk, Henley and Limehouse, and each comes with a lifetime guarantee. Chichester is a classic English design with cockbead moulding and has a simple perfection to it. The pared-back Suffolk takes its cue from the Shaker movement and shows a real discipline to design. The almost regal Henley kitchen is crafted entirely from solid oak and includes some rather impressive curved cabinetry. The Limehouse is the sleek one. The most obviously contemporary, it’s full of hidden secrets like a pullout spice rack and white stone prisms that act as drawer dividers. The one thing they all have in common is a wonderful amount of choice. From paint colours and types of cabinetry to work surfaces and even hardware, together with your dedicated kitchen designer you can create the kitchen you’ve always wanted. All of these beautiful collections and more are available to view at the Neptune Weybridge store or online at www.neptuneweybridge.com. And for a limited time only, receive a complementary sink cabinet worth up to £975 when you spend £8,000 or more on kitchen furniture. Full terms and conditions are available in store. s an island nation, it’s hardly surprising we’re drawn to the sea, and the trend for coastal style decor returns with the regularity of the tide every summer. It’s clean, crisp look is so appealing, and lifts spirits by bringing to mind memories of sun, sea and sand holidays. Happily, taking the plunge and conjuring this easy-on-the-eye look isn’t difficult, and it’s a perfect way to revamp rooms suffering a decor winter hangover. So get on board and cruise into a fullon captain’s cabin look, complete with anchor motifs and a ship’s wheel, conjure the sand-between-your-toes informality of a beach hut, or simply be inspired by the natural landscape of the seashore with a neutral palette and swooping seabirds imagery.
SHIPSHAPE CHIC
Salute a classic coastal look with a sea-spray white and blue scheme, with nautical touches. “The spirit of the British seaside is alive in our coastal collection, where the warmth of nostalgia is given a fresh, modern update,” says Caroline Driver, designer at John Lewis. “Relaxed textures, simple stripes and plainly crafted pieces reflect the comfort and informality of a home by the sea. We’ve enjoyed reminiscing about our childhood experiences of the coast and visiting British seaside towns 7 0 J U LY 2 0 1 6
for inspiration. We’ve included marine motifs, such as ropes, anchors and sailing boats, on all sorts of pieces, alongside fabrics with classic deckchair stripes in whites and blues.” DECOR TIP: Surf supermarkets for style - this season they’re awash with pieces: by Sainsbury’s Authentic By The Shore Embroidered Cushion, with an anchor design, is a bargain at £14, and available in stores and online. GET THE LOOK: Generous-sized seating’s key for a space where relaxed informality rules. John Lewis’ Nelson Sofa, from £699, can be upholstered in a pale blue Selva Pacific fabric and teams well with a Holkham Armchair, in a deep blue Solva Blueprint fabric, from £1,199. Bring in stripes with a Padstow Footstool, from £299, and a Coastal Stripe Throw, £49. Navigate carefully through the vast array of nautical accessories - too many could capsize the look into kitsch - so select a few simple statement items. An Anchor Table Lamp by Jonathan Adler, with a price tag of £345, is definitely for those with a serious coastal crush. Evoke a gentle, seashore setting with a soft palette of pale, watery blues. “This trend evokes the romantic notion and escapism of life at sea, and our collection’s influenced by the tantalising tales and legends of the ocean life,” says Julie Varma, senior design director at George Home. “This season sees the conventional coastal colour palette take a theatrical turn, with the introduction of inky blues, hints of soft pastel blue and smoky grey hues and lilac. Thoughtful details, such as rope, rustic linens, classic sailor stripes, emulate the beauty of an antique cabin.” DECOR TIP: Add a touch of luxury with metallic silver to evoke the enigmatic glimmer of the ocean. Mermaid Antique Mirror Tray, £10, George Home. GET THE LOOK: Ensure a clear blue horizon with walls papered in an Ombre Wallpaper, £15 a roll, Next - ideal for a serene bedroom setting. Get on board with George Home’s highly original swallow-print bedlinen collection, featuring appropriately naval tattoo-style designs with swooping birds, anchors and a ‘faith, hope, love’ slogans: Swallow Print Double Duvet Set, £16. Details count, and I love the witty ‘Seas The Day’ Wall Art, £6.50, The Contemporary Home; a Boat Scene Cushion, reduced from £20 to £10, John Lewis, and a Coastal Clock, £14, by Sainsbury’s. A Paddle Tripod Floor Lamp, whose three legs resemble oars, £130, Pagazzi, makes an interesting addition.

Sun-bleached neutrals and driftwood grey tones conjure an unpretentious beach-hut sanctuary. “Opt for a pared-back style with a muted colour palette, which reflects all the shades of the sea, from stormy steel to high-noon azure. The addition of bleached woods and pale textiles will create a living area that’s as calm and cool as an ocean breeze,” advises Andrew Tanner, head of home design at Sainsbury’s. “The essence of our coastal collection brings together organic forms, reactive glazes and matte tactile surfaces. Bring in detail with sea-green bubbled glassware, model sailing boats, beachy artwork, and interesting textures provided by wicker storage and pottery in driftwood-hues, to add further charm and personality.” DECOR TIP: Coast away from conventional lights and opt for a quirky Vegas Metal LED Circus Light - Anchor, £39, Cult Furniture, and monochrome Sea Shell Votives, £6 each, with a choice of a coiled shell or sea snail design, from Monty’s Vintage Shop. GET THE LOOK: Stripped floorboards, white painted tongue and groove panelling for walls, and weathered furniture are essential ingredients for a shoreside retreat. Sainsbury’s Coastal Living includes Glass Bottles, from £5; a Bird Cushion, featuring white seabirds on a grey background, £12; tasselled Coastal Bird Throw, £14, and Blue Ceramic Vase, £12. No yacht - no problem! Simply accessorise with a wooden Linea Ships Wheel, currently reduced from £40 to £20, House of Fraser, and dress up a sofa with a Super Soft Printed Heron Cushion, reduced from £8 to £4, George Home.

olour may be cool currently - but if you prefer to dance to a different decor tune, and yearn for light-filled, calm, easy-onthe-eye rooms, then a white palette’s the obvious choice. Ignore the ‘white is for wimps’ wisdom; that only the brave stylishly splash on fashionably bright shades and enjoy a technicolour world, while the rest of us scaredy-cats pale at the sight of colour charts and scurry back to the safety of neutrals. What this theory fails to recognise is the simple fact that white works. What’s not to like about a palette which makes spaces appear lighter and larger - and with such a huge variety of shades on offer (yes, really!), from subtle and warm, to crisp and sharp, there’s bound to be at least one, or more, that suits. “White, combining all the colours of the visible spectrum, is a dramatic, affirmative choice, rather than a passive one,” declares Karen McCartney, champion of a white palette and co-author of White Rooms: Decorating With Style, Pattern And Colour. “White creates the sense of a blank canvas, a fresh beginning upon which we can impose our decorative style,” she adds. “Light reflects off white; it bounces around and has the effect of lifting the spirits.
“And its credentials have been proven over time - white’s been used for generations and in many cultures, to symbolise honesty, purity, perfection and spirituality.” She firmly believes white has the power to “set rooms free” and suits any style of home, from modernist to Moroccan interiors, country cottages to industrial lofts - examples of which all feature in the beautifully illustrated book. “It may be, of course, that other factors are needed to make a white scheme work - textured neutrals against a soft white background, a hint of pink in the paint to tie in with a key decorative feature, or being clever about the way in which gloss and matt contrasts. There are all sorts of additions which can enhance a white space, whether its sheer white curtains or shutters at a window, or lighting, from natural light to LED.” Sound all-white to you? Time to freshen up those rooms...
DIP INTO WHITE
Bewildered by the vast array of white paint shades? Follow a few simple guidelines to ensure a white scheme works. “Simple white reflects light and helps to make a space appear bigger, but can feel cold and impersonal,” says Marianne Shillingford, creative director at Dulux. “Try a combination of pure

white and a warm off-white with added lightreflective properties, such as Absolute White and Morning Light from our Light & Space range. “Layers of subtle neutrals make a different kind of impact on a room than deeper shades, but they’ll still make an impact. The creative use of light from floor to ceiling brings subtle shades to life at night too, and of course, you can add colour to a neutral room in accessories. “
WHITE MAGIC
“What’s so appealing about white is its great democracy. It doesn’t discriminate between high architectural art and a warehouse interior, where garage paint can cover every surface, rendering ugly pipes, bricks and stained floorboards invisible,” says McCartney. “White allows the eye to float over every surface, and the furnishings, art and objects to take centre stage. Patterned pastels, bold artworks, antiques, sculpture, designer pieces and found objects all work stylishly within the context of white.”

Interesting white objects in a group act as an eyecatching feature in a space. “The joy of grouping white objects together is that while they may vary slightly in shade, this only adds to the interest they provide when displayed in a pleasing cluster,” says McCartney. “Pay particular attention to the shape, materials, height and placement of objects, to ensure that, whether they’re showcased in front of a dark or light wall, their form is easily defined.”

Featuring an enchanting myriad of bumble bees and sprinkled with polka dots, the design will continue to inspire a beguiling sense of playfulness in the new colourways of Peignoir and Shadow White, Cromarty and Yeabridge Green and Vardo and Cromarty. Inspired by a 19th century design, the boldly brave Tessella has become a modern classic for Farrow & Ball. The unique interlocking mosaic pattern remains confidently poised in the new colourways of Yeabridge Green and Shadow White, Vardo and Inchyra Blue and Peignoir and Worsted. ommissioned by their client to create a glamourous, inviting and luxurious home on the prestigious private estate of St Georges Hill in Weybridge, the design team at Concept Interiors, led by Design Director Samantha Morgan, began working on the schemes whilst the build was still in its initial stages. This was to ensure that the design for the entire property flowed seamlessly throughout each of the spaces, whilst still giving each room its own identity. Using a combination of sumptuous textures and sophisticated finishes they have created a finished property that is luxurious and impacting, yet manages to remain warm and inviting despite its large scale. The Kitchen Family Room mixes gentle grey tones with tactile and elegant fabrics, working beautifully with the sleek kitchen cabinets and statement stone island. Cleverly concealed behind a kitchen door is the leisure complex, featuring an envy inducing bespoke bar and wine room with back lit glass & stone, an entertaining space, gym, spa & pool. Each space has been designed to have its own wow factor, from the Master Bedroom, which takes its design inspiration from the iconic Chanel quilting, to the ground floor cloakroom with its two meter high cascading crystal wall lights. The Drawing Room has an icy elegance, featuring panelled mirror walls, bespoke high gloss furniture and venetian glass lights. Concept Interiors have effortlessly

balanced the cool tones and mirrored surfaces with soft velvets and stunning silks, resulting in a truly breath-taking room that oozes glamour and sophistication. The study is unashamedly dark and masculine, using hints of gold to contrast against the black finishes and the book matched marble flooring. The design team chose to use antique mirror and polished gold detailing in the bespoke joinery to add more drama and finished off the space by tastefully accessorising in a combination of black and gold. In stark contrast to this, Her Master En-suite is overtly feminine. The bath tub is upholstered in white ostrich leather with Swarovski crystal buttoning and finished with a Rose Ogee pink marble top. The large walk in shower has a crystal chandelier shower head and the bathroom fixtures have crystal details. The glamour is continued in the stunning curved, gloss white vanity unit with leather panels and stone worktop and the vanity mirror is equally striking, with its leather and chrome detailing and crystal wall lights, all enhanced with a gorgeous pink marble wall frame.

BOLDER THE BETTER
Teaming luxurious fabrics and accessories in jewel colours might sound showy, but this fearless approach can create an endless source of inspiration. “Whether or not the sun is shining, the romance and flamboyancy of summer makes for the ideal backdrop to bold, bright and downright bonkers interiors,” says Jenny Hurren, creative director of Out There Interiors. “Team bright, block, clashing colours with fantastical accessories and decadent fabrics for an indulgent bohemian feel that will work for every room in the home.”

ven if you usually favour neutrals, it’s hard to resist the lure of summer’s jovial brights. This season’s trend for cheery colour radiates friendliness, energy and warmth, and a colourful trove of textiles can really help pull a room together. Whether it’s in offbeat accessories, bold focal points, giving furniture a new lease of life with decorative paint or getting creative with window dressings, pops of colour create a fun-loving space. “I get inspired when I’m surrounded by beauty and colourful things, even in the simplest of ways. You could easily argue that here are bigger things to worry about in life than surrounding yourself with small ideas and a colourful quirkiness, but little things count a great deal too,”

Painting a tired piece of furniture in an unexpected shade, such as a bright buttercup yellow, can trigger a real sense of achievement, as you’re bringing something old back to life, as well as revamping a space. Annie Sloan has been working with paint in interiors for more than three decades, and there are “endless possibilities” with her Chalk Paint range, which sticks to just about any surface - inside or outside the home - without the need for priming or sanding. Go on, grab a paintbrush and give it a go! Johnstone’s Paint is also joining in the fun this summer with their new Carnival Colour collection. We love Crushed Pineapple, cited as a creative and happy hue, with the highest saturation levels on the colour spectrum.“It’s perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, utility rooms and hallways,” says Donna Taylor, Johnstone’s Paint senior colour consultant. “Due to its brightness levels, it will lift the dullest of rooms in a full wall format with ease, and is ideal for rooms with low natural light. Its brightness also allows this colour to be used as a feature with a harmonious or contrasting bold shade, rather than accompanying it with an offwhite or pastel tone.” Shutters in a bright palette
can also help bounce light around rooms, and can be a worthwhile investment as they’re built to last. ‘’Shutters are a stylish way to make an impact. Unlike blinds or curtains, shutters do not obscure windows, allowing you to make a feature of beautiful period details and adding kerb appeal to the outside,” says Murray Clark, director of The Shutter Store. “To pack a punch, opt for a bold bright shade with our ‘Colour Match Service’. Yellow’s associated with happiness and optimism.’’
HOTSPOTS
A few rays of sunshine allows your outdoor space to be lived in, so make the most of it with some well-chosen accessories. All-weather cushions and pillows, in pinks and oranges, will pull the colours of the house into the garden, and make it feel like another room, where you can entertain, dine and relax. “When stocking up your outdoor kitchen, think low-maintenance,” advises Hedeman Gueniau. “Use durable materials that can stand the weather changes. Melamine, plastic and treated wood are all good. Then you don’t have to take everything inside all the time, but just leave it out until the season is over. “Lanterns for candles create a cosy light when dusk sets in. Being outside means you have the opportunity to go a bit crazier when decorating than you would inside. Pick the brightest plates and the funkiest prints.” Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, English Yellow, £18.95 for 1 litre, available from Anniesloan.com

Why Homeowners are Warming to
Solid Roof Conservatories M any UK homeowners can be exasperated by badly designed and specified existing conservatories, complaining they are simply too hot in summer and too cold in winter. It is therefore important that if a double glazed glass conservatory is what is required, that it is expertly designed and installed by well-established conservatory experts so it can be used all year round thanks to heat reflective glass, an insulated base, a roof vent to release any heat build-up, plenty of ventilation and a high double glazing specification to keep the cold out and warmth in. The alternative to a glass or polycarbonate roof, is an “insulated warm roof , better known as solid roofs with tiles. There is the traditional full blown extension option

with either a flat roof or a timber pitched roof with heavy slate roof tiles, or nowadays there is a lightweight, yet incredibly robust aluminium solid roof option that offers even better insulation than traditional roofs, plus a choice of attractive lightweight tiles in both aluminium and UPVC (the latter are more expensive, but aesthetically look like traditional slate tiles). Just like double glazed glass roofs, solid roofs can be installed on conservatories in a matter of days. By opting for a solid roof, rather than a standard glass one, you will improve thermal and acoustic insulation. However, you do lose the natural daylight afforded by glass roofs, whilst gaining a structure that is more akin to an extension, hence why solid roof conservatories fall under the England and
assuming a) the P.D. rights have not been withdrawn, and/ or b) there are sufficient P.D. rights left to build the solid roof conservatory to the size you’d like it to be. If your dwelling is a “new build” developers sometimes place
If you do choose a solid roof instead of a double glazed one, you will possibly need Planning Permission Wales Building Regulations. Both aluminium tiled and UPVC tiled solid roofs can be built in many conservatory styles including: Edwardian, Victorian, Lean-To or Bespoke conservatories to name but a few. The whole point of buying any modern conservatory is that you should be able to use it as and when you like. It can be incredibly annoying if it was not designed for 24/7 use, and thanks to not having enough ventilation, an insulated base or heat reflective glass, or is cold during the winter as the double glazing fitted was not of a sufficiently high specification. A solid “warm” roof offers even better roof insulation, primarily because it contains insulated plywood and rigid insulation board. Any loss of natural sunlight as a consequence of opting for a Warm Roof can be off-set by the inclusion of one or more double glazed Velux style roof windows. These sloping roof windows keep you in close contact with the outside and afford views of the sky above. They will also help ventilate the space which you will be particularly thankful for on hot summer days. If you already have a conservatory that is nowhere near as comfortable as you want it to be, then in all likelihood you’ll need to replace the entire structure (apart from the base and any walls) with one that has a Warm Roof or high specification double glazed roof, windows and doors. If you do choose a solid roof instead of a double glazed one, you will possibly need Planning Permission, so make sure you check what permissions you are legally obligated to obtain (and how much they each will cost) before ordering a solid roof conservatory. If building a new solid roof conservatory onto a new foundation, you may not need planning if you are adding a warm roof structure under Permitted Development Rights,
restrictions on them, so you would be wise to check your particular situation out. Solid Roof Conservatories are in the eyes of the law an extension, so Building Regulations Approval is required, whether you are building a new one, or having a glass roof replaced with a solid one. In the latter case, if your conservatory was built under planning permission, you will need to re-apply for planning, as you are changing from an exempt structure (i.e. a conservatory with a glass roof) to a non-exempt extension.

Outdoor Kitchens
A New Way to Enjoy Your Garden
I
n recent years there has been a tangible rise in demand for al fresco cooking, with outdoor kitchens at the pinnacle of this burgeoning trend. These bespoke set-ups are essentially kitchens without walls, with many typical indoor amenities, but with the advantages of fresh air cooking. Jeremy Sharples of Kitchen in the Garden at Cedar Nursery explains the rising demand; “With the increasing sophistication of outdoor barbeques, the rusty, impossible to use light burner is a thing of the past. Modern grills are easy to use, easy to clean and, above all else, are capable of cooking a huge variety of foods perfectly.” For example, California Grills by Lynx, available at Kitchen in the Garden, offer a dazzling array of technological additions to the classic barbeque, including infrared searing burners and mechanisms to ensure heat is distributed evenly over the grill. These innovative cooking appliances can be arranged according to customers’ tastes and to fit in with their gardens, explaining the high demand. Jeremy works with both property developers and landscape gardeners to produce a bespoke set up, (priced between £5,000 and £35,000), which is in keeping with the rest of the property. New customers range from those who are building an entertaining space on top of their London roof terrace, to rural families seeking to maximise their time in the fresh air.
9 4 J U LY 2 0 1 6
Outdoor kitchens present chefs with most of the options of an indoor kitchen, whilst improving the taste and the atmosphere. Jeremy comments; “Cooking outdoors produces more succulent, tender meat, as the air moving through the cooker is more humid. Dining al fresco always makes the meal just that little bit more special, and many proud new owners of outdoor kitchens are taking advantage of the convivial nature of cooking and eating outside by using it for entertaining.” The centrepieces for summer dinner parties, outdoor kitchens provide the means to cook a whole delicious meal, with that added smoky barbeque flavour. Kitchen in the Garden at Cedar Nursery is run by Jeremy Sharples, who left the corporate world to follow his passion for food. The store boasts a range of outdoor cooking products, from customisable outdoor kitchens through to wood-burning ovens, and now includes island outdoor kitchen units, in your choice of worktop and stone facing. It supplies and builds bespoke outdoor kitchens to match the style of your garden and cooking requirements, and offers the the best outdoor kitchen display in South East England, as well as helpful and professional advice.
