Royal Ballet Live: The Sleeping Beauty This production of The Sleeping Beauty has been delighting audiences in Covent Garden since 1946. A classic of Russian ballet, it established The Royal Ballet both in its new home after World War II and as a world-class company. Sixty years later, in 2006, the original staging was revived, returning Oliver Messel’s wonderful designs and glittering costumes to the stage. Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score and Marius Petipa’s original choreography beautifully combine with sections created for The Royal Ballet by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. Ruth Taylor: Colouring in the Landscape Ruth Taylor trained as a textile designer at West Surrey College of Art and Design in the early 80s and after many years working with fabric in many forms she discovered a love of oil painting which has become her main form of artistic expression. eading London bookseller Quaritch has released a unique collection of antiquarian books relating to horses, riding, and veterinary science. And with prices ranging from under £100 to over £5,000, horse experts, hobbyists and collectors of notable, rare print are set to clamour to own a piece of hippological history. An illustrated catalogue of eighty selected items will also be published this month. The first books in the Billmyer–Conant library were bought in Europe during the Second World War, where John Billmyer, a conscientious objector, was serving with the American Red Cross. Along with his wife, Mina Conant, he built the collection over the next half century. On inheriting the library in 2000, his eldest daughter added her substantial hippological collection, which has continued to grow since. With books on riding, racing, hunting, and horse-training, the Billmyer library has a rich selection of over 150 works of equestrian interest, from horsewhispering and veterinary homeopathy to early satires of riding manuals, guides to riding ‘for ladies’, and a rare horse-skin binding. Highlights include: • Nicolas Beaugrand, Le mareschal expert (1640) - A very rare edition of a popular work proposing horse remedies based on the zodiac. • Gervase Markham, Markham’s MaisterPiece (1643) – Title engraved by Renold Elstracke. Markham was prolific on equestrian books and is known to have lived as a farmer and also published poetry, prose, and plays with some success (there are rumours of rivalry with Shakespeare). Renowned for his ostentation, he

entertained Elizabeth I with his feats of horsemanship. • Jacques de Solleysel, The compleat Horseman (1696) – The first English edition of one of the most influential works on horsemanship. • Delabere Pritchett Blaine, The Outlines of the veterinary Art (1802) - The first history of veterinary science, and the first book to use the word ‘veterinary’ in the title. The most extensive area of the collection covers the development of farriery into veterinary science over the past 500 years, from the first riding manual printed in 1550 to works on racing published in the mid-twentieth century. The books show advances in the field from the sixteenth century, when Carlo Ruini’s observations of the circulation of blood in horses predated Harvey’s discoveries in humans by thirty years, through the controversial establishment of the Royal Veterinary College at the end of the eighteenth century, to scientific treatises in the nineteenth, including an essay by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Alongside the veterinary works of modernising practitioners are popular farriery manuals spanning three centuries, derided by many as the work of ‘quacks’ but fascinating as a record of farriery as practiced by horse-owners before the establishment of the veterinary profession. Snowdrop Season at Gatton Park T

he first few months of the year can be gloomy, but seeing a swathe of snowdrops is one way to brighten the winter months. Despite the cold,

A Good Divorce is better than a Bad Marriage Family law and high net worth finance specialist Claire O’Flinn advises that even in the most difficult of cases, seeking the right support and guidance early on makes it possible to bring the two words “good” and “divorce” into a strong and lasting conjunction.

I

t is sometimes argued that it is easier to reach an amicable split where both parties are independently wealthy. This is a myth that must be dispelled. Even in the most modest financial circumstances, a good divorce, dissolution or separation is possible. This is often achieved when both parties obtain independent legal advice and support promptly. This allows a family lawyer to guide them through the varied routes to settlement including mediation, counselling, therapists, roundtables, and only occasionally the court. It means that a bespoke roadmap can be devised that exactly meets the needs of a particular family. Coverage of celebrity divorces can often give a false picture of the way that divorce works. It is very rarely the harrowing courtroom drama that is often portrayed on television. The reality is that it is possible to divorce and settle all matters relating to your children and finances without stepping into a court at any stage at all. Good representation can help steer parties away from conflict and the use of inflammatory language; they will guide parties towards

placing the best interests of children first; and towards acting with honesty, integrity and objectivity. They will know how to settle matters satisfactorily on paper, but also the point at which it becomes necessary to ask for the assistance of the courts. Even where a matter does go to court, contrary to popular belief, the law is not biased in favour of women over men. Where it is has been in the best interests of children to be placed with a father, this has often been achieved. Where a husband has been dependent on his high-earning spouse, they have successfully advocated for him to receive maintenance. The experience they have is that the court’s focus is on achieving fairness and does not have a gender-biased approach. Historically, more men have been ordered to pay maintenance than women because men typically earned more than women and traditionally did not stay at home to raise children. But times are changing. Whether you are looking to achieve a good divorce, dissolution of a civil partnership or separation following cohabitation, it is important to remember that there are no set formulas for working out what happens when a relationship ends. WHY MAKE A WILL? M

aking a will is one of the most important things that you can do to ensure that those you leave behind are looked after following your death. However, it is something that many of us never quite get around to doing. There are many reasons why this is overlooked – busy work and personal lives, coping with illness or caring responsibilities, believing that you don’t own enough assets to need a will, or putting off addressing difficult questions and family tensions. Just as there are many reasons why people do not make a will, there are many reasons why you should, including: Ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes Relying on the general intestacy rules when dying without making a will can produce surprising and potentially unwanted results. Unmarried partners will not inherit and for estates worth over £250,000, a spouse or civil partner will share the estate with the children. Provide for divorce or (re)marriage If you are going through a divorce but this is not yet finalised, your future ‘ex’ could still inherit your estate under an existing will or the intestacy rules. Marriage also revokes a will, so you will need to make a new will if you get married. Provide for and protect your children Appointing guardians to look after your children if both parents die while the children are under

the age of 18 ensures that they will be cared for by trusted friends or family members, avoiding argument and reducing distress at this difficult time. You can also ensure that your children’s inheritance is held for them until they are mature enough to manage it themselves. If you have children from different relationships, you can organise your affairs to provide for the children from your previous relationship, as well as the children with your current partner. Be tax efficient Ensure that your will is as tax efficient as possible and makes full use of the available tax reliefs. These can be lost if your will is not drafted correctly. Preserve your assets Many clients are concerned about going into care and paying care fees and a will can help to protect your home and assets. Don’t forget to plan for a time when you may not be able to look after your own affairs due to physical or mental incapacity by making Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). It is also important to review your will from time to time, once you have made it. he Lightbox is delighted to welcome back the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Farnham for the annual exhibition showcasing the very best artwork from MFA Photography students. Voted The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide’s ‘Modern University of the Year’ in 2019, UCA has a reputation for educating some of the most innovative photographers of our time. This exhibition will offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore the vibrant and exciting work produced by emerging talent from the department. A range of themes are examined in the students’ work. They use various forms of photographic styles to explore relevant contemporary issues that are sometimes deeply personal. Harriet Brookes is a documentary photographer whose ongoing project, La Frontera, attempts to shed light on the difficulty that citizens of Gibraltar face during the current Brexit negotiations. Using film photography, Daryl Lee Pallas documents Japanese landscapes and places by portraying them in moments of stillness, far from the overcrowding of tourism.

The exhibition, created by Wisley’s Glasshouse team, is aimed at inspiring everyone to think about quirky and innovative ways to grow houseplants.

Ambitious and surprising, the display will give visitors the chance to wander round an entire house of six rooms, each showing different kinds of houseplants that have made themselves far too much at home. Familiar spaces to discover include the Living Room, Bedroom, Kitchen, Dining Room and Bathroom – all filled with unusual scenes. Popular houseplants such as spider plants, devil’s ivy, palms, cacti, bromeliads, succulents and carnivorous pitcher plants will appear in the display as never seen before. The Giant Houseplant Takeover continues throughout the rest of the Glasshouse too, with an avenue of terrarium plants, a hanging display of over 100 air plants and a gallery of succulent portraits. Director of The Lightbox, Marilyn Scott, says of the campaign: “Many residents in Woking and surrounding areas are unaware of the extensive health and wellbeing and community support programmes we deliver at The Lightbox. Winter at Winkworth

A

fter a long season of beautiful autumn colour, winter arrives at Winkworth Arboretum and the trees are bare once again. This beautiful landscape is a secret frosty haven, tucked away in hills just outside of Surrey. Although autumn may be long gone, you don’t have to look far for colour. The Winter Garden, just a short walk away from the kiosk, is home to camellias and mahonias, both of which bloom during the colder months. Delicate witch hazel flowers appear during the later winter months too, providing bright yellow colour whilst evergreen trees provide a constant source of interest. Visit during winter and you may spot snowdrops tucked here and there amongst the trees, a sure sign that spring is on its way soon. The best displays can be found outside the tea-room and along the Upper Arboretum and Spring Walk. Many of them have been seeded by our wonderful team of volunteers, who provide invaluable support to the gardening team at Winkworth. You can choose from a number of different routes around the Arboretum, some which are level and some which provide more of a challenge. A disabled car park at the bottom of the Arboretum provides access to the meadow and lakeside walk. Wherever you’re headed, sturdy shoes and your warmest clothes are a must, especially on frosty days. Walk all the way down to the lake to the Boathouse and you’ll be awarded with a view of trees shimmering in the clear water, which takes on a particularly calm quality during the winter months. If you’re a keen photographer, early morning mist and frost laden grass make for particularly good photography opportunities. It’s a wonderful chance for the whole family to get outside for some fresh air to blow away the 48 JANUARY 2020

cobwebs. Dogs on leads are welcome and children will love to explore the play area. They can choose from the natural play area, perfect for younger children, or the Tree Adventure which features a rope tunnel, mini fireman’s pole and multi layered platforms. Visitors can rest and refuel in the tea-room with soups, stews and hot drinks on hand to warm you up after a long walk. Every penny spent goes back into preserving the Arboretum for years to come. New Year’s Resolution…

Why not add a new Will to the list?

M

aking a Will is one of the most important things you can do for your loved ones, and yet 52% of the country do not have one. Why is this? I expect it is more than likely on your to-do list, but there are several reasons people put off making their Will; a big reason is not wanting to think about your death. Another could be money - it costs money to make a Will. Maybe you are unsure who you want to benefit, or cannot decide who to have as Executors and end up putting the whole thing on hold. Or time could be an issue; perhaps you are too busy or keep putting it off as, ‘no-one’s going to die tomorrow, right?’. And yet, of all the things in life, surely planning for our loved ones after our death is the most important thing we can do. Everyone should have a Will. It is the only way to ensure that your loved ones will benefit from your Estate on your death. If you do not have a Will then everything is shared out in a standard way defined by law (known as the rules of intestacy). These strict rules, which decide how your assets are passed, may be completely at odds with your wishes. Unfortunately, the law has not kept pace with the modern world. This can result in some very unfair outcomes. For example, nowadays a lot of people choose not to marry and yet unmarried partners are not recognised. This is the case even if you have been living happily together for 30 plus years. The same applies to stepchildren - the only way they will

be able to inherit from you is if you make a Will providing for them. A Will is especially important if you have children as you can decide who looks after them in the event of your death, known as the Guardianship clause. My advice is not to leave things to chance choose for yourself who benefits. William Orpen: Method & Mastery at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village

T

his winter, Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village presents William Orpen: Method & Mastery (on until 23 February 2020). Exhibiting the artist’s original studio materials, and showcasing previously unpublished technical research, this exhibition explores the dynamic and evolving artistic practice of one of Britain’s most innovative portrait painters. Celebrated for his career as an official war artist and sought-after society portraitist, Major Sir William Orpen KBE RA RHA (1878 –1931) was characterised by his rapid and expressive painting style. Featuring a selection of his striking portraits, alongside closely observed pencil and chalk studies, this exhibition will present a fresh interpretation of his bravura technique, challenging the perception that his practice was persistently spontaneous, even impulsive. Works including Anatomical Study: Male Torso (Tate) and Nude Study (Leeds Art Gallery) illuminate the young artist’s proficient understanding of human anatomy and highlight the impact that his early training at the Slade School of Art had on his own teaching. The works play a central role in exploring how his training, with its emphasis on observation, draughtsmanship and the model, informed the evolution of Orpen’s own unique, expressive style. The artist’s transition from student to master is encapsulated in Homage to Manet, which features key figures in the British art establishment including Henry Tonks and Hugh Lane. This group composition was situated in Lane’s property at South Bolton Gardens, London, which would soon become Orpen’s studio ‘Oriel’.

In 1917, Orpen travelled to France to pursue his position as official war artist. His visual records of the Western Front, both in pencil and paint, portray his strength in sensitively capturing humanity and devastation. With a variation of line and tonal gradation, Frozen Feet: Fleurs (IWM London), reveals the lasting significance of the artist’s early training. Contrastingly, both The Grenadier Guardsman and the renowned The Refugee, are critical examples of his technical development, for they both vividly demonstrating his masterly evocation of light and colour. President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters from 1924 – 1930, Orpen succeeded John Singer Sargent as the leading portraitist of the age. He immortalised on canvas the most distinguished aristocratic and society figures of the day, among them actress Dame Madge Kendal and scholar Sir William McCormick. Alongside his critically acclaimed Diploma Work, Le Chef de l’Hôtel Chatham, the range of portraits on display exemplify Albert Rutherston’s observation that the artist possessed ‘an almost uncanny knack of seizing the essential outward and visible signs which give the key to character’. This exhibition is underpinned by previously unpublished research conducted by Watts Gallery’s De Laszlo Paintings Conservator Sally Marriott. Including samples of X-radiography, Infra-red reflectography, paint sampling and stereomicroscopy. This technical analysis offers visitors a unique opportunity to see beneath the canvas surface and will illuminate the materiality of Orpen’s portraiture and studio practice. www.wattsgallery.org.uk

f your spider plant has lost its lustre, you’re done with your devil’s ivy and have lost your appetite for your Swiss cheese plant, it’s time to seek out some more unusual houseplants. You could go for a tropical look with parrot-shaped flowers, or something architecturally onpoint, or even a plant that grows coffee beans. So, what’s out there that you probably haven’t tried?

The parrot plant, also known as the Congo cockatoo (but officially Impatiens niamniamensis), is a striking plant which produces unusual red and yellow flattened tubular flowers with a green hooded mouth, dangling below leaves to provide an eye-catching display. Originally a stalwart in the African rainforest, it prefers a humid environment and is ideal in a heated greenhouse or frost-free room but keep it away from central heating because it needs moist air. Go Hawaiian tropical It may be rare, but the Hawaiian palm can bring a dash of the exotic into your home with its rich green leaves and sweet-scented jasmine-like flowers which bloom in October. This succulent, which doesn’t need much watering, makes its main growth in the winter months and is easy to grow indoors. Give it a light position inside in winter and a sheltered position in the house or garden in the summer, when it is dormant. Leaf through spots Variegated leaves are nothing new in the plant world - but what about spots? There’s a begonia out there

to give you spots before your eyes. The Begonia maculata ‘Wightii’ has a white dotted upper leaf and deep red underbelly and will do well in bright light but not direct sunlight. Keep the soil moist, watering once the top two inches of soil have dried out, but don’t let the plant dry out completely, and give the plant good humidity. Explore elephant ears Alocasia are proving popular at the moment, thanks to their tropical-looking veined leaves in a variety of colours and leaf markings. Try the Amazonian elephant’s ear (Alocasia x amazonica), a dramatic addition to any room, with its arrow-shaped evergreen leaves which reach up to 60cm (24in) long. They do well in a warm, lightly shaded room or conservatory. (£9.99 for an 11cm pot, Thompson & Morgan)

Go batty The bat flower (Tacca chantrieri), so called because it mimics a bat in flight, is a striking houseplant whose large, rich leaves surround an almost black bloom with long ‘whiskers’ during summer. Plant it in well-drained soil, positioned in a shady spot with high humidity, so place the pot in a tray of wet gravel to keep the air around it humid. It will need repotting annually as it doesn’t like to be potbound. It’s a great alternative to an orchid. If you’re growing it from seed, soak the seeds for 24 hours before sowing. Fancy a coffee? Ever thought of bringing your own taste of heaven into your home with a coffee plant? The Barista has luscious green leaves to add a tropical touch to a shady spot in your home. Its attractive clusters of sweetly scented white flowers are followed by glorious red berries, which are in fact coffee beans. The London Antique Rug & Textile Art Fair (LARTA) Brightens the Winter Season. 21-26 January 2020

ARTA is the UK’s only specialist event for fine textile art, antique carpets, vintage rugs and exceptional weavings from around the world.
