his new and unique Lightbox exhibition will for the first time in over 30 years present a comprehensive historical survey of the achievements of female photographers working in Britain. From the early innovations of Anna Atkins through to Dorothy Bohm’s documentation of 1960s London, through to the contemporary self-portraiture of Sarah Lucas in the 1990s – Britain has cultivated a long tradition of trailblazing women whose significant contribution to the medium will be recognised in this exhibition. Women in Photography: A History of British Trailblazers (30 January 2019 – 2 June 2019) will feature around 70 works including Turner Prize winners and nominees and Venice biennale exhibitors such as Helen Sear, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Collins, Gillian Wearing and Jane and Louise Wilson. The works featured will date from the mid-19th century through to 2009 and will chart progressions in style, techniques and popular subject matter. Early notable photographers include Julia Margaret Cameron, Lady Hawarden and Queen Alexandra. Works have been generously lent by many leading museums and galleries including by Her Majesty The Queen from the Royal Collection, Tate, Victoria & Albert Museum, Arts Council Collection, British Council Collection, National Portrait Gallery, Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Lee Miller Archive. The works will be presented chronologically and visitors will be transported on a whistle-stop journey of the history of female photography. There will be five key themes running throughout this story: ‘Photographic Processes’ as demonstrated by Anna Atkins, Susan Derges and Joy Gregory. ‘Staging the Scene’ where artists create a narrative with their compositions which will be represented by artists such as Emma Barton, Eveleen Myers and Mitra

rom her earliest royal engagements, everything Diana wore was closely scrutinised. In this elegant exhibition at her former London home, Diana’s relationship with her favourite designers will be explored through a display of some of their original fashion sketches created just for the Princess. The exhibition highlights how she navigated her unique position in the public eye: learning to use her image to engage and inspire people, and to champion the causes she cared about. Eleri Lynn, curator of ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’, said, ‘Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most photographed women in the world, and every fashion choice she made was closely scrutinised. Our exhibition explores the story of a young woman who had to quickly learn the rules of royal and diplomatic dressing, who in the process put the spotlight on the British fashion industry and designers.’ Don’t miss this extraordinary collection of garments, ranging from the chic Catherine Walker suits that made up Diana’s ‘working wardrobe’ and glamorous evening wear including the iconic velvet gown famously worn at the White House when the Princess danced with John Travolta. Vienna Festival Ballet presents
Giselle Monday 4 March to Saturday 9 March
C
lassical ballet takes centre stage again from Monday 4 March to Saturday 9 March when the highly acclaimed Vienna Festival Ballet returns to the Theatre Royal Windsor with their stunning production of Giselle. The ultimate romantic ballet, Giselle is a tale of innocence, love, betrayal and madness. With music by one of the 19th century’s best composers, Adolphe Adam, and choreography by the late Nicholas Beriosoff, Vienna Festival Ballet’s traditional staging of this 1841 masterpiece moves from the sunny optimism of Giselle’s idyllic village life to a ghostly, moonlit world of mystery and menace. Giselle, a young peasant girl, has fallen in love with the handsome Count Albrecht, who has told her he is a villager named Loys. When she discovers that he has deceived her the heartbroken Giselle is driven to madness and death. Vengeful spirits of abandoned brides led by Queen Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis force Albrecht to dance to his death. Giselle was first performed in Paris in 1841, with choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. Productions seen today were originally choregraphed by Marius Pepita for the Imperial Russian Ballet. In 1984 Vienna Festival Ballet’s production was choreographed by the late Nicholas Beriosoff (1906-1996), a Lithuanian baller master of Russian descent who emigrated to England. It was indeed a great honour to have Beriosoff often known in the ballet world as Papa Beriosoff, choreograph and coach the company in one of the greatest ballets of all time.

about 1.5 metres. Deer grazing also prevents tree seedlings from growing, keeping the grassland open. For young trees to survive they need to be protected against damage from deer antlers for some 50 years. During the autumn the deer ‘rut’ (breeding season) takes place. The red stags and fallow bucks compete for females (known as hinds and does respectively). At this time, the large males roar, bark and clash antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and to attract as many females as possible. The young are born mainly in June, and are hidden by their mothers amongst the bracken and long grass. Females and their young are very vulnerable and sensitive to disturbance at this time Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely within much of the park. The herds are culled in November to keep numbers manageable and the park population healthy. The British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales, who are regarded as the main welfare organizations dealing with the welfare and management of deer nationally, recognise that parkland deer numbers must be managed and that removal of some of the deer is necessary each year to keep populations at acceptable levels. The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage. Although many ancient parks were originally maintained for hunting purposes, in recent times it is recognised that the deer herds

of the Royal Parks in London are an integral part of the parks’ ecosystem, as well as being a valuable amenity and educational feature. These parkland deer are wild animals, which are not regularly shepherded or handled; they are left to breed normally and to establish normal social behaviour.
“The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage All deer parks have a maximum capacity of deer numbers, which must not be exceeded to avoid problems of disease and damage to the natural environment (the complex ecosystems for which Richmond Park is notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, National Nature Reserve and a European Special Area of Conservation, being of particular importance). The deer are wild animals, so never try to touch or feed them. Always keep a respectful distance, especially if you have a dog. CLASSIC ATTRACTION Historics’ major classic car auction at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, March 2nd features an eye-watering array to suit all tastes and pockets
W
hilst car makers continue to get a bruising from falling new car registrations, the proportion of cars aged over 13 years continues to flourish, with over 5.5 million registered before 2004 currently cruising the roads of Britain (Source: DoT). Whilst many of us may hang on to our car longer for practical or financial reasons, fuelling this retro growth is also the bullish market for classic car ownership. This is very much the territory of the renowned specialist auctioneer, Historics, which plays homage to the effervescent classic car scene at its major auction of bygone motorcars at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, March 2nd. This is the third Historics sale at the local venue and it again promises to be a stunner, with 150+ fascinating, impeccable and very varied classic cars coming up for sale.
“The fascination of classic car ownerships spans all price categories” Exactly what constitutes a classic car is subject to interpretation in terms of vehicle age, and Historics is well-known for representing the widest span, regularly offering classics spanning nine decades from the dawn of motoring. Indeed, a quick look at early consignments to Historics’ Ascot sale shows enormous diversity, echoing the old adage of ‘something for all’, and taking into the varying depth of one’s pocket. One of the undoubted stars on the serenity stakes is a 60-year old 1959 Lancia Flaminia GT, styled by one of the iconic design houses of the day, Touring of Milan. Worthy of its ‘grand turismo’ title, this timeless melange of Italian engineering and hand-built aluminium coachbuilding is superrare and offers great investment potential, as is frequently the case with classic cars. In its day, this model was owned and flaunted by the rich and the famous and 60 years on, Historics’ offering would be thoroughly at home cruising the Côte d’Azur – a tempting prospect. 34 JANUARY 2019
Historics’ Ascot Classic Car Auction Ascot Racecourse Saturday, March 2nd. From 10am Preview Days: Thursday, February 28th. 10am – 8pm Friday, March 1st, 10am - 5pm www.historics.co.uk
Top, L-R: Timeless elegance: 1959 Lancia Flaminia GT. Est: £95,000-£120,000; Truly a stand-out: Tumbler Batmobile. Est: £120,000-£180,000; Sporting icon: 1989 Porsche 911/930 Turbo Body Speedster. Est: £145,000-£165,000 Circles, from top: Affordable chic: 1996 MercedesBenz SL500 Roadster. Est: £10,000-£13,000; Enticing project: 1967 Jaguar 420 Saloon. No reserve
Moving on thirty years to 1989, Historics offers another icon for sale, this time from Porsche, who that year re-introduced the Speedster, first seen in 1959 as a 356 variant. Resplendent in its bright Guards Red coachwork and presented in the most magnificent condition, this 1989 Porsche 911/930 Speedster wide-body model has travelled little more than 14,000 miles since registered new in the UK, marking it a true collector’s car. But Historics’ auctions are not entirely about high value exotics. The fascination of classic car ownerships spans all price categories, and offerings such as a 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Roadster is a great example…. Estimated at just £10,000-£12,000, it is the epitome of Mercedes’ grand touring convertibles with exceptionally brisk performance, and comes to sale with the added and rare bonus of a highly desirable panoramic hardtop. Whilst DIY is no longer a feature of modern day car ownership, it’s endemic with the ownership experience of a classic car, whether rolling up the shirt sleeves to tinker beneath the bonnet or spending months and years on a restoration. Falling into the latter category is a 1967 Jaguar 420 saloon. This model is a genuine ‘barn find’, the habitat in which it has been ‘resting’ for a decade. Ripe for a remedial treatment and loving care to restore it to its former glory, it is offered at no reserve, which enticingly means it will sell to the highest bidder on the day, however little. And finally, illustrating the diversity and quirkiness of the classic market, Historics is bringing to sale an extraordinarily-detailed, one-off replica of the Tumbler Batmobile that starred in the Dark Knight trilogy of Batman films… Practicality isn’t a word that springs to mind here, but if you’re looking to stand out in the street, or fancy a wedding car with a difference, this could well be the answer! Full auction details, registration to bid, and descriptions of the 150+ regularly-updated consignments coming to sale on March 2nd can be viewed on Historics website, www.historics.co.uk. The sale is preceded by two preview days, on February 28th and March 1st so there’s the opportunity to thoroughly examine the cars before the Saturday sale.

Two unique botanicals distinguish this Gin: the famous Amalfi lemon, renowned for its sweet flavour and served with The Connaught Bar’s celebrated martini, and red wine from the vineyards of Bordeaux. Reminiscent of a 1920’s cocktail shaker, the glass bottle design takes inspiration from the glamorous cubist interiors of The Connaught Bar and is ready to be enjoyed shaken, stirred and straight up or on the rocks. Agostino Perrone, Head of Mixology at The Connaught says: “The Connaught Bar Gin has truly been a labour of love and an unforgettable experience. When we first sat down to discuss producing a one-of-a-kind spirit, our main effort was to put together all the essences that we believe encapsulates the bar to create an exceptional gin. Estimates will range from £300 to £100,000 and will comprise around 150 lots in total. Three of the pieces on offer are these amazing glass models of jelly fish by renowned sculptors and modellers the Blaschka brothers, whose glass models were made for natural history museums worldwide. One of the models represents the most famous of jelly-fish, the Portuguese Man of War, whose long tentacles can deliver the most painful of stings, enough to kill most fish and in rare cases, humans. It’s vivid blue tentacles are perfectly represented in this model in swirling glass and it is almost impossible to believe how delicate the model is, and that it has survived for almost 150 years of turmoil within Europe. Renowned for their ingenuity and craftsmanship, their work from 1863-80 is a magical moment where art meets science. Working in Dresden, the brothers, who were formerly jewellers, turned their hand to natural history, created over 10,000 models during their years of business, representing over 700 invertebrate species. Benedict Winter who is Junior Specialist, Furniture and Works of Art, Christie’s London, has shared some specific insights below which I thought could be helpful. “I first came across Peter

THE ART OF THE SURREAL EVENING SALE 27 February 2019
L
eading the sale is René Magritte’s masterpiece Le Lieu Commun, 1964, one of the finest and largest examples of his iconic bowler-hatted men. With an estimate sale price of between £15,000,000£25,000,000. Never before offered at auction, and poised to set a new world auction record for the artist, the work offers a unique vision of the wandering icon in that it offers a view of the figure both full-face and hidden behind a column in an ambiguous landscape of either impossible or multiple reality. The large scale (39 3/8 x 31 7/8 in. and 100 x 81 cm.) oil on canvas, signed ‘Magritte’ in the upper right corner, will be on view from 22 - 27 February 2019 ahead of the auction. Le Lieu Commun was formerly owned by Gustave Nellens, the great collector who commissioned the ‘Le Domaine Enchanté’ series of eight paintings by Magritte, and owned many great works by the artist, as well as the Fuji Museum in Tokyo. It is one of four paintings featuring the bowler-hatted man from 1964 that mark the culmination of this theme in Magritte’s work. The others are Le Fils de L’Homme, made for Harry Torczyner and which previously set the world record for the artist when auctioned in 1999, La Grande Guerre and L’Homme au Chapeau Melon. The three other paintings featured a simpler image of a single bowler-hatted man standing in front of a seascape and facing the viewer. In each of these works the face of the man has been obscured by an object: either an apple or a white dove. For the first time, Magritte makes use of a strip-like play with perspective and a forest view in a technique that anticipates one of the greatest paintings of his very last years – Le Blanc Seing of 1965, held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington - in which the image of a horse and rider are ambiguously intertwined with the tree trunks of the surrounding forest.

Olivier Camu, Deputy Chairman, Impressionist and Modern Art, Christie’s: “In subject matter, rarity and scale, Le Lieu Commun is the most important painting by René Magritte to be offered at auction since 1999 when the painting Le Fils de L’Homme, created for Harry Torczyner, the great friend and patron of the artist, was sold for a then world record price. The everyman figure of the bowler-hatted man was used by Magritte as a pictorial cypher, moving between layers of reality. The present work is highly enigmatic and inventive. In Le Lieu Commun Magritte subverts the traditional genres of portrait and landscape painting and challenges our understanding of reality and representation; he plays with the viewer’s sense of what is real and what can be perceived. Uniquely we see this figure both in front of and behind the column so that he is at once revealed and obscured. We are thrilled to offer this as the leading work of our 18th edition of the dedicated The Art of the Surreal Evening Sale.”

BUYING YOUR FIRST SUPERCAR
Lucky enough to be in the market for some seriously exotic machinery? Here’s where to start, says Ryan Hirons
A
lmost all drivers dream of owning a supercar - but it’s a reality that only a lucky few will ever get to experience. If you’re finally in a position to make this dream come true for you however, there are a few important things you’ll need to keep in mind. While buying a regular car brings its own set of challenges, a supercar is a whole other ball game. There’s a lot to consider - some are hard to find, insurance could be an issue, and then there’s finding a place nearby with the know-how for its servicing, which on this level of car is more crucial than most. 44 JANUARY 2019
Here’s our guide to help get you on the path of supercar ownership... I want a supercar! Where do I start? Just like any car-shopping, you need to know exactly what you’re after, whether that’s something to show off with in summer, tuck away in the garage as an investment, or hound around the Nurburgring. It’s also worth considering your budget, of course. If you’re buying new, prices can be difficult to source once you reach a certain part of the market - so don’t expect to be able to just find out how much that McLaren 600LT you crave will be

on finance, without jumping through some hoops. Start by heading online to use configurators (just about every firm has one), and creating your perfect spec. That can then be sent off to your nearest dealer, who can discuss prices with you there. The used market is a whole different ball game. Supercars on the lower end of the scale tend to depreciate a fair bit, so be prepared - just as with any car - to research things to look out for. Issues can be common on this kind of machinery, simply due to how complicated and fragile components can be, and of course you’ll need to ensure the car has been well-kept. Sometimes, a cheap deal isn’t the best deal. Time to shop around and test drive! Do I need to do anything differently? Just like any car, once you’re in the classifieds, it’s best to shop around and take a look at a number of examples of cars you’re looking at. For preregistered cars, that might be finding the right spec, while used brings condition and history to the table. Take your time to research, and don’t just settle on the first thing you come across. As for test drives, these are also the same - albeit potentially harder to book, as a seller or dealership won’t want just any regular punter to turn up asking for a spin in their exotic machinery. Research issues and things to look for in a particular supercar which are often well-documented online by owners - and use the test drive as an opportunity to sniff them out. It’s very easy to get excited by the prospect of driving what could be your very first supercar - but don’t let that cloud your judgement on a test drive. After all, once you have the right machine, you’ll have time to enjoy it. I’m ready to buy! What next? You’ve found the right car, and everything is in place for you to make the purchase. First, decide how you’re paying - if you’re buying it outright, lucky you! Otherwise, search around for the best deals on finance or a loan. It’s also worth remembering that despite these exotic machines costing huge sums of money, there’s still room to haggle - unless you’re at the ultra-desirable end of the scale. Payment plan secured, it’s time to look at insurance. Believe it or not, most regular insurance companies will be able to offer an insurance quote on your new supercar just like a regular family hatchback - albeit premiums will likely be higher. There’s also the option of specialist insurers which focus exclusively on high-end machinery, and may be able to offer a cheaper quote as a result. It’s also worth keeping in mind general maintenance and running costs are going to be higher before fully committing. With fragile components prominent in many supercars, they require more care and attention than most daily runabouts will - so be prepared to spend a good amount on servicing and repairs if needed. 46 JANUARY 2019
“It’s very easy to get excited by the prospect of driving what could be your very first supercar - but don’t let that cloud your judgement on a test drive”
I have the keys! Anything else I should know? Well done, you’ve entered the elite world of supercar ownership. Go show it off to the world! Or stick it in the garage for investment, that’s your call now. If it’s the former, be prepared to be asked questions about it frequently from admirers and those envious alike. Oh, and the occasional social media appearance of course. We should also hit home the point on being sensible with the performance. Supercars tend to have bags of power, which is fine on a racetrack, but do avoid the temptation to hit the boot on every straight, clear road you see. Even more so if this is your first time driving a car of this type, as the performance could prove overwhelming. Stay safe and have fun!

THE SONGS. THE SOUND. THE STORY. Motown the Musical Celebrates 60 Years of Motown!
“Motown the Musical tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation”
S
ixty years ago – on 12 January 1959 - a man with an unstoppable dream invented a sound that would be remembered forever. Motown the Musical follows the legendary career of Berry Gordy and the creation of his musical empire, Motown Records. The story begins with the young Berry dreaming big, hoping one day to make people as happy and proud. After a few years on Detroit’s automobile assembly line he sets his sights on bringing a socially charged, racially divided country together with music. With an $800 loan from his family, Berry founds a music making factory. Motown is born! Berry not only had a great eye and ear for talent,

but he was also able to nurture that talent, helping to create an incredible array of superstars - from Diana Ross and the Supremes, to Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and many more. But with the Vietnam War looming and America at a cultural turning point, Berry realised the time had come to push for something bigger than he ever dreamed of: to make music that could get the whole world moving to the same beat. Motown the Musical tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation – complete with the ups and downs of the personal relationships, the professional struggles, and – of course – the music that made history. Discover the story behind the beat that changed minds, touched lives and took the world by storm. Motown the Musical shows how one label and its roster of legendary artists created the soundtrack that transformed America and gave the world a new musical vocabulary – the Motown Sound. With over 40 classic songs such as “My Girl”, “Stop! In The Name of Love”, “Dancing in the Street”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” played by a 15-piece orchestra, this explosive event is the next chapter of Motown’s incredible 60-year history. Step into the most exciting school in England “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised”
A
lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for. Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eyecatching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time 52 JANUARY 2019
to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.” Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.” Who could ask for anything more?

Award Winning Surrey Artist
Carole Andrews S.B.A.
C
arole describes herself as a ‘flower painter who uses watercolour to create life’. Over many years Carole has studied and developed her use of watercolour, finding this the most sensitive medium to reflect her great love and feeling for flowers. She says of her working technique: “I use heavy non absorbent ARCHES paper. Each painting is carefully thought out, but the initial composition is inspired by the beauty of one particular flower; the focal point. The rest of the picture is composed around that idea. Some berries, fruits or insects are included, but each addition compliments the original concept. Contrast of colour, form and texture are all used to encapsulate the emotional response that was born with the initial concept. To achieve the necessary strength of form I use, where possible, transparent colour and gently glaze one colour over another. In doing so my paintings become a meditation as the flowers convey the essence of the theme of that particular composition. Background washes are applied lastly by various techniques. Soft washes are created by immersing the picture in a bath, so that the paint surface is softened and loosened, then the shadows and further background colours are added. For more vibrant backgrounds, colours are dropped in on a very wet surface to create many beautiful water colour characteristics.” In 1988 Carole received membership to the Society of Botanical Artists and has exhibited with them over the years at various venues including The Mall Galleries and Central Hall Westminster. TAKE TO THE CAKE-WALK T he Autumn/Winter 2018 Prêt-à-Portea collection at The Berkeley is set to wow with couture cakes and boot biscuits inspired by this season’s runway highlights. A favourite with fashionistas, Prêt-àPortea adds an innovative twist to the traditional English afternoon tea bringing the latest catwalk trends to the cake-walks. This season animal print, polka dots and neon colours took the catwalk by storm. First up on the cakewalk is British fashion queen Victoria Beckham, celebrating her 10th anniversary with her signature shopping bag, legs akimbo, interpreted as, what else, but a Victoria sponge and shares a plate with royal wedding dress designer Peter Pilotto’s ubiquitous pink satin blazer biscuit straight from Beyoncé’s ‘On the Run’ tour. Tom Ford’s leopard print sequinned two-piece suit is transformed into a mint cake with chocolate bavarois and, embracing their playful side this season, Prada’s print canvas tote complete with dinosaur is reimagined as a chocolate walnut brownie and decorated with, none other than, a white chocolate stegosaurus. From dinosaurs to polka dots, Ada Kokosar’s polka dot midnight shoe is transformed into a lemon and poppy cheesecake adorned with a delicate sugar frill and Mulberry’s chic winter look becomes a pecan madeleine cake with oversized buttons and sugar pearls. A touch of colour is Valentino’s extravagant orange dress gracing the cakewalk as an orange Charlotte with citrus marmalade. Fashion favourite Erdem’s Zelena dress is interpreted as a pink lady apple mousse cake with edible silver glitter and sugar florals. And of course, taking a fashionable step forward, Fendi’s Cutwalk cowboy boots top the cakestand as a chocolate biscuit with baby blue icing.

Wonders at Painshill which Hamilton placed follies for dramatic effect. The Painshill Park Trust was set up in 1981 to restore this incredible masterpiece which had fallen into disrepair over time. Painshill has now been restored to its former glory and welcomes thousands of visitors and school groups.

e are delighted to introduce Paul Griffiths, the new Director of Painshill, Cobham, Surrey. Paul talks about what makes the 18th century landscape garden so special and why it is a great place to visit throughout the year. What attracted you to become Director of Painshill? I previously worked as Head of Operations at the Mary Rose award winning museum, which I enjoyed enormously, but as soon as I visited Painshill it was love at first sight. The scenery is just stunning; there is a feeling of space, tranquillity and being close to nature. I felt inspired and excited that this could be my new workplace, therefore I was delighted to be appointed as Director. Tell us a bit about the history of Painshill. Painshill 18th century landscape garden was created between 1738 and 1773, by the Hon. Charles Hamilton. Inspired by Renaissance art and his Grand Tours across Europe, he created a sequence of breathtaking and surprising vistas. The landscapes form living works of art into 60 JANUARY 2019
Can you visit the landscape garden throughout the year? Yes, one of the many wonderful things about Painshill is that you can enjoy the seasonal changes. With 158 acres to explore it is a fabulous place to walk and many of our visitors are members. We have just experienced an incredible display of autumn colour and mirror glass reflections in the lake. The landscape garden is about to change again with the cold weather, I have already seen it sparkle with an early morning frost. I am yet to experience the beauty of the snowdrops and the arrival of spring, but I’ve been told there is a spectacular show of yellow daffodils and carpets of bluebells to look forward to. Are there any special events planned? This year we are launching a brand-new event ‘Festive Illuminations’ which is really exciting. The landscape garden is being totally transformed with lights and laser beams. The crystal Grotto is going to sparkle like it has never done before and there is even going to be fake snow at the Gothic Temple. This really is going to be an amazing event as we also have a live band and Santa’s Toy Factory. We have just increased the number of tickets as so many people want to come which is brilliant.

BUILDING NEST EGGS IN A YEAR OF UNCERTAINTY At Talking Money we like to give people ideas to invest their money. First we qualify a client, to ensure we are only promoting products to the right people (defined by the Financial Conduct Authority) and then we get down to discussions about how loan notes and bonds work. The investments we promote offer a way of investing in a company, hands-free, without being subject to the mercies of stock market swings. Many of the companies are property-related and clients benefit from security to protect their capital, by having access to a real asset should something go wrong. We believe it is crucial that clients are offered security to protect their capital in return for a fixed interest over a fixed timeline. At the end of the term their capital is returned along with interest. It is difficult to make predictable returns, that beat the bank or FTSE shares. Some clients up until now have been investing in buy-to-let properties. But with recent buy to let tax changes, it is tough for individual landlords to keep what they make, since the tax charges have increased. 2019 will be an uncertain year for our economy. But there are some investments – in some sectors – that will continue to deliver returns, whilst protecting capital at the same time.

T
here is an increasing conversation nationally over the subject of non-medical therapists offering injectables such as Botox and Fillers. While there is no reason not to have injectables, we went to Dr Rekha Tailor of Health & Aesthetics to understand more about the regulations in the aesthetic industry. Who can give you fillers or botox? “Right now, pretty much anyone. Fillers can be injected by anybody on the high street – from a cleaner, builder, hairdresser, therapist or a beautician. The industry is totally unregulated, which means that many of these practitioners have no medical knowledge, experience or qualifications. They don’t need to be qualified at all, or even experienced, to administer them. The lack of training isn’t the only issue, though. How can patients know what they having injecting into them, if the practitioner doesn’t? It’s possible to just order products from the internet and watch a few YouTube videos. Investigations have shown a huge variation in the quality and composition of these products, and unless only FDA approved products are used, patients have no way of knowing whether they are effective, or even safe. There is a voluntary register of practitioners who have qualifications, which we think is a positive step forward. But even those who have had training may have only had a very short training course – a day or less – before being encouraged to go out and start practising. Others, like pharmacists or dental professionals may have had extensive training in their own fields, but lack the specific knowledge needed to administer aesthetic treatments safely. What does this mean for the consumer? One of the biggest problems with this is that many practitioners don’t have the detailed knowledge of anatomy or clinical training in assessment that a medically trained doctor or nurse will have. Badly injected or poor-quality fillers can give an uneven, lumpy effect, but the potential complications from injectables aren’t limited to disappointing results. Incorrectly injected or low-grade products can block essential vessels in the face, resulting in swelling, scarring or even tissue death. And a non-medical
68 JANUARY 2019
What does the injectables industry need? At Health & Aesthetics, we believe that the only real way to reduce the risks and ensure patients get the results they want is for the administration of injectables to be regulated, so these treatments can only be administered by properly qualified and experienced, medical practitioners. That means Doctors, already regulated by the General Medical Council, or nurses, regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Both go through years of training before becoming qualified, so patients could be confident they were always in safe hands. We’d like to take it further, ensuring that only medical practitioners properly trained in aesthetic medicine can administer these treatments. But some regulation would be a positive start.
How does Health & Aesthetics differ in their approach to injectables? At our clinic in Surrey, we ensure that all injectable treatments are only ever administered by myself. I am a fully qualified Medical Practitioner, qualifying in 1989 and have been practicing Aesthetic Medicine for over 14 years. We ONLY use FDA approved products, meaning they have been extensively tested and monitored for safety and efficacy. This is much more superior than the CE mark often on products. What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone considering injectables? You absolutely need to research who is injecting you and what they are injecting. Put simply, it really should be a Medical Practitioner who is using FDA approved product. CQC approval is also integral in ensuring your chosen clinic is operating under the highest standards. I would obviously never want to scare someone off having injectable treatments; done by the right person and under the right conditions, it can be perfectly safe and you can have fantastic results. You just need to be vigilant about who you trust your body and face to!

Mastering the Arts C
lassic works of art by the old masters have never gone out of style and today, traditional fine art is seeing a significant resurgence. This revival of styles such as Renaissance, Romanticism and Neoclassicism has introduced a burgeoning trend; reproduction painting. Brights of Nettlebed have commissioned many hand-painted duplicates of fine art masterpieces, allowing customers to admire their favourite paintings in their own homes. One example of a classic reproduction the company has available is The House of Commons 1833. Based on a 19th century painting by Sir George Hayter, this is considered one of the most important representations of the Reform Act of 1832, an event which changed the political landscape of Britain. The original, which covers 170-square feet of canvas and took over 10 years to complete, depicts the opening of the first Reformed Parliament in the House of Commons. Some 375 identifiable figures are captured in this portrait, including MPs, Whigs and tory peers. Today, it hangs in the National Portrait Gallery where it holds the title of ‘portrait with the most identifiable sitters.’ Brights of Nettlebed’s near-identical reproduction is displayed in a handmade English swept frame. Another example of a fine art reproduction at Brights is the portrait of Horatio Nelson. In this duplicate of a 1798 portrait by Guy Head, Nelson appears with a young midshipman moments after victory at the Battle of the Nile. Two battlescarred ships can be seen flying white ensigns in the background as Nelson’s companion hands him a sword wrapped in a captured flag. This reproduction has been stretched and mounted in reeded moulding. These are just two of the museum-quality commissioned pieces that Brights of Nettlebed

have in stock, which are replicas of important works dating as far back as the 15th century. The company is associated with a small studio of highly accomplished artists, each of whom has been specially selected for their technical skills and for their ability to faithfully replicate originals. Brights calls upon these artists for their bespoke ordering service, allowing customers to commission the oil painting of their choosing. Whether customers would like their own oil-painting reproduction of a classic masterpiece, photograph or personal family portrait, they are welcome to visit Brights of Nettlebed at their showrooms in Nettlebed, near Henley-on-Thames – where all of the existing paintings can be viewed in classically furnished rooms. SUCCESS It might just be a handy space for visitors but there’s no need to ‘spare’ the style. Follow Gabrielle Fagan’s
guide to gorgeous guest rooms...
T
he guest bedroom - or ‘spare’ - isn’t necessarily the most well-kept room of the house. If you’re lucky enough to have one, it’s probably either a dumping ground or used as extra storage space most of the year - meaning a mad dash to clear the clutter when visitors are booked in. (Relax, we’ve all got our guilty spare room secrets!) Hosting overnight guests? Transform a neglected spare room into a space that’s inviting and stylish. Give it a little TLC, splurge on new bedding and perhaps a few fun - or luxury - little extras here and there, and you’ll have it looking (almost) as fabulous as a boutique hotel room, but with homely touches too. Follow these simple steps to styling the spare...
Turn up the heat
Sleep like a log “Many people have no idea how comfortable their spare bed is, so I always suggest you ‘road test’ it to discover any lumps or bumps or comfort issues,” says Helen Johnson, from The Fine Bedding Company (finebedding.co.uk), which sells a washable Spundown range, including pillows and duvets.. “A new mattress enhancer or topper may be all that’s needed, which is cheaper than replacing a mattress but can mimic a new bed feel. Next, check care labels on filled duvets and pillows to see if they can be machine-washed at home. Feather and down duvets and those without guidance labels need to be professionally cleaned. Finally, give pillows and duvets a good shake before dressing the bed,” she adds, “to even out the filling and return their plumpness.”
Introduce hotel chic It’s the little things in life that count, and kitting out a room with a few practical items - like a mirror, a side table, or an extra chair - can make all the difference. Guests will feel comfortable and cared for, almost like being at a hotel. “A pile of clean towels (preferably that have been given 10 minutes in the tumble dryer on the day guests arrive, so they’re fluffed up and fresh) tied up with ribbon will help create an inviting atmosphere,” advises Johnson. “Fill a ‘just in case’ basket with essentials, like mini-toiletries, a toothbrush, hairbrush, shower cap - things that are all to easy to forget in the rush of packing presents and clothes. Provide a spare mobile phone charger and your home Wi-Fi code written on a postcard as well.”
Wow with wallpaper “Adding a feature wall is an affordable and easy update that will certainly deliver a boutique feel,” says Alex Whitecroft from iwantwallpaper.co.uk. “Wallpapering just one wall is often easier and quicker than people think - it can definitely be done in a day, and there’s no need to worry about patterns not lining up at corners. Less paper also means less money. Guest rooms need to make people feel welcome and appeal to varied tastes, so choosing wallpapers that won’t overpower an overall design scheme is good advice. Metallics are 82 JANUARY 2019
“Under-bed storage allows for lots of extra space in a bedroom, and a storage pouffe is another solution. Make sure they contain spare blankets or extra throws, as people can feel colder in other people’s homes, and don’t forget spare pillows,” says Sue Brodie, head of creative design at holiday homes specialists Willerby (willerby.com), who also advises checking that the room’s windows can open and testing radiators to ensure they work. “All rooms, no matter what size, should have a focal point, as this anchors the space - normally the bed in a spare room,” she adds. “Use colour or pattern behind the bed, so that it’s not distracting or sleep disturbing, and minimise the clutter for a serene and balanced space.”
Spoil the spare “If a room isn’t regularly used make sure it’s well aired and add a room fragrance candle or diffuser,” advises Johnson.“A new lamp, cushion or rug can be all that’s needed to give a room a lift and provide a touch of luxury. It’s all about making people feel they have a sanctuary where they can retreat and relax as well as sleep.”

older weather getting you down? You’re not alone. Shorter days and darker evenings inevitably leave us craving a large dose of cosy and warm, inviting rooms to retreat to, which become comforting sanctuaries at this time of year. Need to feather your nest? Frankly, there’s no need for fuss or faff - just a few style tweaks, and maybe a sprinkling of room treats, will work magic.
Follow these six easy steps to snug... Snuggle up Scandi-style “I love that Scandi look, which is about pleasing the senses with calm colours that soothe the mind, and textures that you just want to touch,” says Nadia McCowan Hill, resident style advisor, Wayfair. “Go for chunky knits, soft sheepskin and natural wood. It’s all about adding depth of tones and comfort to this texture story. Don’t forget to add a scented candle - notes of cinnamon, clove and orange are seasonal - and play peaceful music. Sit back and enjoy the peace!”
Shop for chic cosy treats Accessorising with dark tones of slate grey and charcoal combined with cream will keep a scheme looking modern. Tiled and wooden floors are ultra-fashionable but can be so cold for toes. A rug 84 JANUARY 2019
“Turn up the cosy stakes in a living room by embracing exotic colour, for a carnival-style festive glow that’s fun and funky,” says McCowan Hill. “Rich, bright shades will bring warmth to any interior, and you can ramp up the rainbow effect with scatter cushions and accessories. A pair of jewel-toned velvet curtains will revamp a draughty window and are a great way of shutting out an icy chill.”

Top Sofa Trends for 2019 Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, shares 5 sofa trends that are set to be big for the upcoming season
Classic, simple shapes Minimalist furniture and decor has never gone out of style, and with the ongoing focus on mindfulness and the perennial chic of the signature clean Scandinavian aesthetic, this look is going to keep going strong in 2019. “It’s all about going back to basics, with classic and versatile designs,” says Rebecca. “The aim here is to create a space that’s pared back, yet thoughtful - think strong lines and structured silhouettes. For instance, a modern sofa in classic black leather will lend a cool, yet welcoming feel to the living room. The focus here is a strong centrepiece – go for simple yet bold shapes for a look that’s both classic and interesting. This will really shine when paired with eye-catching, contemporary décor. Opting for a leather finish lends a sophisticated look that’s both versatile and easy to maintain, making it a great foundation that’ll never go out of style.”
Natural textures and linen The movement towards natural textures and materials in the home is also about creating a welcome retreat from hectic, modern life. Whether it’s bringing greenery indoors or experimenting with wood finishing, this trend works across many styles and homes - from rustic and tropical to airy and Scandinavian. “The growth of natural fabrics such as linen reflects an ongoing shift towards sustainability,” says Rebecca. “Linen is a versatile, durable material, with both cooling and warming qualities depending on the weather. This makes it a great choice for a comfy, stylish sofa all year round, and as an added bonus, its signature finish creates both visual and tactile texture in a space. With its soft beige and oatmeal shades, a linen sofa pairs up well with elements like indoor plants, rattan and wood for a tranquil, relaxed vibe in the home.” 88 JANUARY 2019

Luxurious velvet Now for something entirely different - often considered the epitome of luxury and timeless style, velvet reigns supreme as one of the top trends this season. For this latest interpretation, velvet manages to be both retro and modern - think classic Chesterfield sofas updated in bold jewel tones, and modern sofas made cosier with this soft, gleaming fabric. “Velvet sofas are designed to make a statement in the living room,”says Rebecca. “A velvet sofa in a dark colour such as blue or red anchors a light, neutral room and gives it a dramatic contrast. When set against a darker background, such as a grey or black wall, it can add a luxurious, plush pop of colour.” “A stylish way to introduce colour and glamour to a space, this finish absolutely shines in an airy, casually elegant space, and also works when playing with darker tones for a punchy, transformative look,” Rebecca says. “In terms of texture, velvet beautifully complements other fabrics and finishes, such as knits and furs, making it easy to entirely change the look and feel of a space, depending on the rugs, pillows and other decor.”
Art Deco influence A look that has inspired countless home makeovers and DIYs, Art Deco returns with a chic new look for 2019 - and we predict that it is here to stay. “Colour and contrast are set to be key players in this modern revival,” Rebecca says. “This approach is a perfect way to highlight statement furniture such as Art-Deco inspired sofas – offset cool tones like grey against rich blues for a calm and chic interior.”
“This trend also celebrates the notion that more is more when it comes to decorating, truly embracing maximalist tendencies. Pick out an Art Deco-inspired sofa with graceful curves and tapered legs for a polished look, before layering it with bold hues, prints, and finishes. The result is an space that’s full of personality, and yet will never go out of style.” “It’s easy for this look to get a little overwhelming, so it’s also good to start off in small doses through printed pillows, or wall art. The beauty of Art Deco is its ability to dazzle as an accent or as a full-blown theme – in smaller doses, it luxes up mid-century and modern Scandi interiors, but it also works for a high-impact, glamorous feel at home.”
Clever Detailing And lastly, details – they can define a trend or add a final flourish to a space. “With the enthusiasm for bolder looks on the rise, interesting details are definitely here to stay,” Rebecca says. “Elements like ruching and rolled edges give an extra boost of refinement to furniture especially sofas, highlighting fine workmanship and adding interest.” “A great middle ground between distinctive looks like the maximalism of Art Deco and Scandi minimalism, playing with a range of smart, stylish details is a clever way to spruce up an interior. A sofa with interesting details is a quiet statementmaker, a classic that will always stay chic.” “This trend is incredibly versatile and transferable across a variety of interiors – experiment with timeless classics like button-back cushions and brass legs, to modern touches such as contrasting piping and unique silhouettes.”
