Surrey Artist of the Year 2024

I

n a vibrant celebration of local talent, Guildford-based artist Rosalinda Kightley has been crowned Surrey Artist of the Year 2024 at Farnham’s New Ashgate Gallery. Chosen through a unique democratic process involving 586 votes cast by the public and a panel of esteemed judges, the award honours Surrey’s outstanding artistic contributions as part of Farnham’s October Craft Month.

The prestigious title, awarded in partnership with Surrey Artists Open Studios, highlights Rosalinda’s captivating work, which draws on her background in illustration and is inspired

by Surrey’s countryside and urban scenes.

Working primarily in acrylics, her paintings are known for their vibrant colour palettes and rich textural quality, bringing still-life compositions and everyday landscapes to life in a way that resonates with viewers.

Rosalinda expressed her joy at receiving the award: “Thrilled and excited to have been picked from the many talented artists beavering away quietly in their studios throughout Surrey.

• Colette Moscati, a painter based in Farnham, brings a modern approach to traditional subjects, often exploring the effects of light in nature.

Rosalinda will showcase her work in a solo exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery in September 2025, allowing art lovers to experience her richly detailed, expressive landscapes up close In addition to a solo, Rosalinda is awarded a bursary of £2,000 for her creative development.

Santa Fun Run is back in town at beautiful Bushy Park on 8 December and Sandown Park Racecourse on 15 December!

S

anta Fun Run is an annual festive 5k when family and friends (including the four-legged variety) gather in a sea of Santa suits to raise crucial funds for Princess Alice Hospice: whether you run, walk, wheel or skip, taking part is all that matters.

After a santastic success at its Sandown Park debut last year, Santa Fun Runners will once again take to the grounds in a flurry of festive cheer. Afterwards, a Traditional Christmas Market and Craft Fair will give children the chance to meet Santa in his grotto!

Santa Fun Run is an important and poignant event for many of those running in memory of a loved one. Becky is running in memory of her late husband, Tim, with dozens of their family and friends.

When Tim’s family brought him into Princess Alice Hospice for respite care in winter 2023, he noticed we were promoting our annual Santa Fun Run fundraising event. Becky remembers how he wanted to find a way to thank the Hospice for the care he was receiving, so they gathered a team of friends and family together to take part.

On the day of the run itself, Tim was too unwell to participate. Instead, he stood at the

finishing line and took photos of friends and family as they completed the run. Becky treasures the group photo that was taken with Tim that day.

This year, a bigger Team Tim will be taking part in Santa Fun Run in Tim’s memory. Becky wants to fundraise for the Hospice because she knows it was Tim’s wish and knows it meant a lot to him. Team Tim comprises of his two boys, all his three siblings, other family members young and old, members of Tim’s cycling group, friends and some four-legged runners, too.

Becky says: ‘’We saw the amazing care Tim received and this is our way of thanking the Hospice. The atmosphere last year was very warm. We want to continue to help. On the day that Tim died, I found out later that four other people died under the Hospice’s care that day. I realised it wasn’t just us going through something so difficult, we need help to allow the Hospice to continue to care for other families like us.’’

After Tim died, his two boys were supported by the Hospice’s family social worker, Helen, which Becky says has ‘really helped.’

Why is Christmas special at Bachmanns?

I think it comes down to our products- we make such a variety of Christmas specialities that everyone who comes through the doors can find something special they like to give as a gift or treat themselves. Over the years we have built up an ever growing long fan base of a “Bachmanns Christmas”. Our regular customers always make a trip in December to see what my team have created, and the shop is always busy during Advent when the shops look so festive.

What sells best at Christmas?

That’s a difficult one! It changes from year to year if I’m honest. We make Stollen, Christmas Puddings, Christmas Cakes, Mince Pies, Christmas Petits fours, and a bewildering array of Chocolate Christmas products. If I had to pick out favourites, it would be difficult to be honest, but our Prune and Cognac Tart was previously named as the best Christmas Cake or dessert in the UK, and more recently, our Lebkuchen was named the best gingerbread, so I guess I’m particularly proud of those. A few years ago we won a national Design award for our Chocolate Christmas pudding- it’s a bit like an Easter Egg in concept , with crunchy almond chocolates inside, and I always take one home for my two boys at Christmas- that’s a really fun product. Our products are only available in the month before Christmas so that makes it special, but also a challenge!

“Tell us a little about the history of Bachmanns” My Dad started the business with my Mum in Thames Ditton in 1989. After training in Switzerland he’d enjoyed a stellar career in confectionary including stints as the executive pastry chef at the Dorchester and The Park Lane Intercontinental, and the Chief confectioner at the Swiss centre in Leicester Square. He wanted to create the kind of local shop that they have in Switzerland; a store that covers all aspects of chocolate and confectionary, at the highest of standards. Since it has started, Bachmanns Patisserie has gone on to win over 30 national awards, so I guess you can say he achieved that.

I think that the real reason that we have been so successful over the years, and what I think sets us apart from many places, is the variety and sheer excellence of his recipes. Our products have a simplicity and clarity of flavour that is hard to match, and we do take care to never compromise on the quality of our ingredients. Across the year, we make over 450 different products, and change them through the seasons, so anyone will be able to find a favourite, and it keeps it exciting for our regular customers.

I took over the business just over ten years ago, on his retirement, but he still provides my team with inspiration and guidance- in fact he’s in Thames Ditton right now making our German Lebkuchen (gingerbread)!

A few years back we opened our second store in Weybridge, which was very exciting. It has allowed us to expand- we now have about twenty staff- and had the space to create a special separate chocolate room there, where we produce all our chocolates. The two sites both have their own pastry kitchen and they run in tandem, with each site specialising in certain areas, but all our products are hand finished every morning in both shops. It was a doubling of size and a huge investment for us. So far it has been a great success, and it’s been very satisfying – and a relief(!) to watch the business grow.

ennifer Lopez sports quintessentially British style on the red carpet of her latest film, ‘Unstoppable’, in central London.

The 55-year-old actor took to the premiere in head-to-toe Dior, wearing a white double-breasted overcoat, black polo neck and matching bucket hat.

Lopez finished the look with a small black Lady Dior bag with gunmetal hardware, which takes its name from the late Princess of Wales.

In true Lopez fashion, the star brought an edge to the outfit in backless, strappy knee-high boots in black patent calfskin.

The choice of bag was undoubtedly an homage to her habitat – sporting the same colour and design that Diana frequently carried around London.

How to style sequins as a minimalist Understated style has been a leading trend in 2024, with minimalist brands like The Row, founded by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, steering the simple sartorial choices. Searches for their classic Margaux tote spiked by 198% year-on-year according to the online fashion retailer, Lyst.

If this trend speaks to you, then the trick to styling sequins subtly is all about balance. “A sequin top under a sharp blazer or a shimmering skirt paired with a crisp, white shirt or a cosy cashmere knit gives you that understated glamour,” explains Wakeley.

Opting for sequins in neutral tones is an easy way to add a festive touch to an otherwise simple outfit. “Champagne, silver or even a soft blush catches the light in a way that’s chic but not over the top,” says Wakeley. “It’s that whisper of shimmer that says you’re in the Christmas spirit without shouting it from the rooftops.”

If you’re dipping your tow into the trend, “consider incorporating sequins as an accent rather than the main event,” suggests AliExpress UK‘s general manager, Bonnie Zhao. “A sequin-trimmed camisole paired with tailored trousers and a blazer offers a sophisticated touch of shimmer. A simple knit sweater with subtle sequin embroidery elevates a casual look.”

How to make sequins high-end With the ‘quiet luxury’ trend still riding high, knowing how to style sequins with a touch of sophistication is key for your 2024 Christmas ensembles.

“Sophistication with sequins is all about elegant lines and careful styling,” Wakeley explains. “A beautifully tailored, floor-length sequin gown or a refined sequin midi with long sleeves can be stunning.”

For a more luxe look, take inspiration from the Princess of Wales’ love affair with Jenny Packham’s shimmering gowns. Boddington suggests opting for dark and muted tones, “emerald green, navy, gunmetal grey or classic black instead of silver or gold will create a more opulent affect,” she explains.

Wakeley says to team your rich and jewel-toned

sequins with minimal accessories and play with textures to elevate the ensemble. “Pair with barely-there jewellery – think gold hoops or a sleek bangle, then pare back the shine by shoulder-robing a tux jacket or a velvet smoking jacket.

“Embrace playful textures by layering different sequin sizes and finishes.”

Wakeley agrees, suggesting if you’re going all out, you must lean into it. “A full-length, sequin dress in a striking colour or a trouser suit will really steal the show.

“Pair it with a fabulous pair of heels and bold, sculptural earrings and a bold lip. It’s about movement, impact, and sparkle …embracing the joy of dressing up.

“As I always say, it’s about how your clothes make you feel. If you feel great you will undoubtedly shine.”

SIENNA MILLER DROPS NEW PARTY COLLECTION AT M&S This is the British actor’s second collection with the high street retailer. By Lara Owen

I

n summer of this year, Sienna Miller launched the ultimate Boho-chic clothing line at M&S, with most pieces selling out within hours.

Following its success, the 42-year-old actor has released a second collection with the British retailer, comprising of 35 partywear designs – arriving in stores just in time for the festive lead-up.

Featuring romantic ruffles (quintessential to Miller’s free-spirited taste) luxurious satin, sequins and rich velvet, the designs are inspired by the days of disco and New York’s legendary nightclub, Studio 54.

“I’d love to have partied with David Bowie,” says Miller, “back in the real heyday.”

With animal print, wide-leg trousers and fitted waistcoats, the collection brings a retro edge to partywear. “No one partied like they did then,” Miller notes, “so I tried to capture that spirit.”

Miller has long been hailed for her unique style, and has subsequently become the ‘it’ girl of Noughties Boho fashion.

Her knack for styling led her to the launch of

her own brand Twenty8Twleve in 2007 with her sister, Savannah Miller. The two later stepped down as co-creative directors in 2012.

Yet Miller’s style influence continued long after the 2000s, with her red carpet and recurring Wimbledon looks garnering unparalleled attention.

This collection therefore is anticipated to be another triumph for M&S, whose annual clothing and home sales have risen 5.3 per cent this year, increasing profits by 21 per cent.

A shop once synonymous with trusty underwear and your grandparent’s wardrobe has undergone a rapid transformation thanks to it’s ‘quiet luxury’ and pared-back designs taking off among the under-30s.

This collection is far from minimalist however, expressing the eclecticism and eccentricity of Miller’s own wardrobe.

Kate Moss’ new Zara collection

wo fashion power houses have collided as Nineties style icon Kate Moss and the high-street retailer Zara collaborate for a series of high-profile capsule

staples.

The Zara X Kate Moss collection launches on 30th November in store and online, and will comprise of ready-to-wear pieces and accessories intended for a big night out.

Styled by Katy England, a fashion stylist known for her extensive work for Alexander McQueen, the collection blends classic cuts and grunge glamour.

Moss said that she wanted to create “the perfect party capsule [with] pieces that feel effortlessly chic, but with an edge.”

This is the first time Moss has collaborated on a fashion collection in 10 years, since launching her second Topshop collection back in 2014.

Since then, Moss has had various business forays, such as launching her eponymous talent agency in 2016 and a beauty brand called Cosmoss in 2022.

Moss’ first clothing collaboration with a highstreet store was in 2007, when the supermodel co-created and designed a fashion collection for Topshop that also sold through retailers including Barneys New York.

The collection created a frenzy of fashion lovers. A Moss “countdown to launch” board was erected in Topshop’s Oxford Street store window,

and on 30th April, Moss launched her line by briefly appearing in the window modelling a red dress from the collection.

This collection was quintessentially Moss: featuring boho vests and one-shoulder minidresses alongside grunge-y skinny jeans and cropped leather jackets.

Moss continued to design for the high street brand until 2010, when she turned her focus to more high-end retailers, such as designing handbags for the French label Longchamp.

But following the monumental success of her first line, Moss returned to Topshop for a one-off collection in 2014, and on the day it launched she appeared at Oxford Street once again in a black and gold tuxedo suit.

The event drew hordes of shoppers hoping to catch a glimpse of the supermodel – fans are undoubtedly crossing their fingers for a reenactment for the 2024 Zara launch.

With Moss’ Nineties party-girl past – there is no doubt that this collection will focus on the trademark slips, sparkles and bohemian blouses the model is famed for.

As a partywear collection, Moss’ iconic leopard print will surely feature, whether it be in the form of clothing or accessories.

Moss said this collection mixes “classic cuts with just the right amount of glam to take you through the party season.” There’s no doubt it will bring a new edge to this season’s party wardrobe.

DIGESTING CHRISTMAS DINNER: How to keep your tummy happy

s well all know, Christmas is a time for overindulgence, both in the quantities we eat, but also in the rich and decadent nature of our favourite festive food and drink. In the UK, the average person consumes 5,373 calories on Christmas day, more than three times the recommended daily amount, and heavier nature of this food can play havoc with our digestive systems. Mr James Kinross, consultant colorectal surgeon at King Edward VII’s Hospital in Marylebone, discusses how we can help our gut this Christmas.

Christmas dinner can cause an issue when a sustained period of unhealthy eating affects the microbiome, our intestinal habitat of millions of microbes, their genomes and their surrounding environmental conditions, which requires a varied diet in order to function properly. Like any other habitat, a healthy gut microbiome requires diversity to thrive.

Eating fatty foods and processed meats, like pigs in blankets, or having too much sugar by picking at a selection box, instead of more plant-based meals doesn’t give the microbiome the diversity and nutrients it needs, which can take its toll on the body.

POST-CHRISTMAS PROBLEMS Interestingly, dietary changes like the ones we experience during the festive season not only influence gut bacteria to create digestive complaints, but can also have a serious impact on your overall health. In addition to IBS and digestion issues, bloating can be a sign of food

intolerances and autoimmune conditions of the gut associated with gluten consumption such as coeliac disease. More rarely it is a sign of inflammatory diseases of the gut, such as Crohn’s disease, or more rarely certain cancers, such as stomach and colon cancer.

Other consequences of an unhealthy gut include sleep problems, and it may even influence our mental health. Recently, significant advances have been made in our understanding of how the gut and the brain interact, and the microbiome also plays a significant part in determining our mood.

If you notice you’re bloating very often, or if it is especially painful, or any other new and persistent symptoms, you should go and see a doctor. You should also seek help if you are experiencing symptoms such as weight loss or a persistent change in your bowel habits.

I always tell my patients to listen to their bodies.

If something doesn’t feel right, or you’ve noticed changes lasting for more than a couple of weeks, it’s best to get it checked out.

SPUDS AND SPROUTS THIS CHRISTMAS Staying active can help to combat some of the side effects of Christmas overindulgence. Rather than sitting down to enjoy a Christmas film after dinner, getting up to go for a 45 minute walk can help stimulate the digestive system. Exercise is critically

important at any time of the year; our health, and an active lifestyle improves the function of the bowel.

Traditional Christmas dinners are low in fibre and high in fat, meaning they are not always gutfriendly. Try to avoid fatty foods such as Yorkshire puddings, processed meats and rich puddings which are the staple of any Christmas meal. I would also recommend maintaining a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to give the microbiome the fibre it needs. Staples such as Brussels sprouts are rich in prebiotic fibre, which means they are the perfect fuel to help our gut bacteria flourish.

As party season kicks in, try to maintain a healthy balanced diet and avoid takeaways.

Although this doesn’t mean avoiding nights out and Christmas get-togethers, as socialising with other people can contribute to diversity of bacteria in the gut.

Beware of ramping up alcohol intake over the Christmas period too. Alcoholic drinks contain a lot of calories, and bacteria break down alcoholic drinks into molecules that can be harmful to us.

If you want to enjoy a drink, stay hydrated and try alternating alcohol with low calorie soft drinks or a glass of water.

Having a healthy diet enables the cycle of a healthy gut and immune system. These simple changes will make you feel fresh and ready for the New Year!
