William Orpen: Method & Mastery at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village
T
his winter, Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village presents William Orpen: Method & Mastery (on until 23 February 2020). Exhibiting the artist’s original studio materials, and showcasing previously unpublished technical research, this exhibition explores the dynamic and evolving artistic practice of one of Britain’s most innovative portrait painters. Celebrated for his career as an official war artist and sought-after society portraitist, Major Sir William Orpen KBE RA RHA (1878 –1931) was characterised by his rapid and expressive painting style. Featuring a selection of his striking portraits, alongside closely observed pencil and chalk studies, this exhibition will present a fresh interpretation of his bravura technique, challenging the perception that his practice was persistently spontaneous, even impulsive. Works including Anatomical Study: Male Torso (Tate) and Nude Study (Leeds Art Gallery) illuminate the young artist’s proficient understanding of human anatomy and highlight the impact that his early training at the Slade School of Art had on his own teaching. The works play a central role in exploring how his training, with its emphasis on observation, draughtsmanship and the model, informed the evolution of Orpen’s own unique, expressive style. The artist’s transition from student to master is encapsulated in Homage to Manet, which features key figures in the British art establishment including Henry Tonks and Hugh Lane. This group composition was situated in Lane’s property at South Bolton Gardens, London, which would soon become Orpen’s studio ‘Oriel’.

In 1917, Orpen travelled to France to pursue his position as official war artist. His visual records of the Western Front, both in pencil and paint, portray his strength in sensitively capturing humanity and devastation. With a variation of line and tonal gradation, Frozen Feet: Fleurs (IWM London), reveals the lasting significance of the artist’s early training. Contrastingly, both The Grenadier Guardsman and the renowned The Refugee, are critical examples of his technical development, for they both vividly demonstrating his masterly evocation of light and colour. President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters from 1924 – 1930, Orpen succeeded John Singer Sargent as the leading portraitist of the age. He immortalised on canvas the most distinguished aristocratic and society figures of the day, among them actress Dame Madge Kendal and scholar Sir William McCormick. Alongside his critically acclaimed Diploma Work, Le Chef de l’Hôtel Chatham, the range of portraits on display exemplify Albert Rutherston’s observation that the artist possessed ‘an almost uncanny knack of seizing the essential outward and visible signs which give the key to character’. This exhibition is underpinned by previously unpublished research conducted by Watts Gallery’s De Laszlo Paintings Conservator Sally Marriott. Including samples of X-radiography, Infra-red reflectography, paint sampling and stereomicroscopy. This technical analysis offers visitors a unique opportunity to see beneath the canvas surface and will illuminate the materiality of Orpen’s portraiture and studio practice. www.wattsgallery.org.uk

Winter at Winkworth A
fter a long season of beautiful autumn colour, winter arrives at Winkworth Arboretum and the trees are bare once again. This beautiful landscape is a secret frosty haven, tucked away in hills just outside of Surrey, a far cry away from the rush of Christmas. Although autumn may be over, you don’t have to look far for colour. The Winter Garden, just a short walk away from the kiosk, is home to camellias and mahonias, both of which bloom during the colder months. Delicate witch hazel flowers appear during the later winter months too, providing bright yellow colour whilst evergreen trees provide a constant source of interest. Visit during winter and you may spot snowdrops tucked here and there amongst the trees, a sure sign that spring is on its way soon. The best displays can be found outside the tea-room and along the Upper Arboretum and Spring Walk. Many of them have been seeded by our wonderful team of volunteers, who provide invaluable support to the gardening team at Winkworth. You can choose from a number of different routes around the Arboretum, some which are level and some which provide more of a challenge. A disabled car park at the bottom of the Arboretum provides access to the meadow and lakeside walk. Wherever you’re headed, sturdy shoes and your warmest clothes are a must, especially on frosty days. Walk all the way down to the lake to the Boathouse and you’ll be awarded with a view of trees shimmering in the clear water, which takes on a particularly calm quality during the winter months. If you’re a keen photographer, early morning mist and frost laden grass make for particularly good photography opportunities. It’s a wonderful chance for the whole family to get outside for some fresh air to blow away the 20 DECEMBER 2019

Dogs on leads are welcome and children will love to explore the play area. They can choose from the natural play area, perfect for younger children, or the Tree Adventure which features a rope tunnel, mini fireman’s pole and multi layered platforms. Visitors can rest and refuel in the tea-room with soups, stews and hot drinks on hand to warm you up after a long walk. Every penny spent goes back into preserving the Arboretum for years to come. The events team runs a regular programme of seasonal events, with walks on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. At Mandira’s Kitchen he was shown how to break open the dough ring that sealed the pot of biryani and mix the meat and rice that had been steaming inside, before tasting it with a smile of approval. “In Asia, it is all about home-cooking,“ she told the Earl, “For example my chicken and cashew recipe was invented by my mother.” Mandira Sarkar moved her Indian ready-meal business to a 400 year old cowshed at the Silent Pool converted for her by the Northumberland Estate, earlier this year, and from being a one-man band, she now manages an enthusiastic team of 16 and is busy building up her business. Mandira grew up on a tea plantation in Assam, moving with her husband to England 20 years ago. As well as producing a range of frozen ready-meals, 750 portions per day, she also caters at events and runs cookery courses. Her events team are mostly

members of Guildford High School sixth form, where her daughter is a pupil. Mandira’s Kitchen is staffed by Sabina Baretto from Goa and a friendly team of local ladies who came for a “little job in a shop” and now handle all aspects from sales to events of the expanding enterprise. After filling and packing a meal for the freezer, the Earl joined the throng of friends and supporters, including VIPs, the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux and the Mayor of Guildford, Richard Billington, outside to unveil the brass plaque. The Earl of Wessex meets Surrey’s cheesemaker Michaela Allam has been making Norbury Blue since 2002. HRH the Earl of Wessex visited her dairy at Sherbourne Farm on a tour of food and drink producers representing the success of Surrey Hills Enterprises. Michaela moved her dairy to the barn converted for her by the Northumberland Estate earlier this year. The dairymaid logo for the cheese came from the Minton tile on the wall of the game larder/dairy at Norbury Park Farm, run by her father, where Michaela began her cheese business. She regaled the Earl with tales of the origins of the name Stinking Bishop and her own Dirty Vicar cheese and hinted at a subtle variant of her Dirty Vicar washed in local Tillingbourne beer! He tasted them and declared them delicious! The milk for the cheeses comes from Aldhurst Farm in Capel and their own bottled milk is available at Kingfisher Farm Shop.

Kicks off 2020 in Classic Style!

he UK’s largest New Year’s Day Classic Gathering will once again be held at Brooklands Museum in Surrey. Using the surviving sections of the original Race Track, everything from Minis to Bentleys will be on display as visitors eager to dust off their classics make their way to be part of the event. Visitors will be able to mingle amongst the static displays that also take in the historic Paddock and Motoring Village areas that were the centre of activity on race days and made it a popular destination for high society in the glamorous 1920s and ‘30s. There will be a winter barbeque and all the exhibition areas will be open including the Awardwinning Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed. This vast, unique exhibition space tells the story of aviation design, testing and manufacture over an 80 year period at Brooklands through interactive displays, assembly lines and workshops amongst the Museum’s aircraft collection. Beyond this on a connecting walkway from a new mezzanine level is the Flight Shed which houses some of the Museum’s live aircraft, and leads out to the north end of the Finishing Straight. To accommodate the huge numbers of motorcycles, trucks, hot rods and classics expected, vehicles will also spread to the Aircraft Park where the Museum’s collection of Vickers-built aircraft will be open for visitors. In front of this is the Brooklands Concorde which will be open for the popular half-hour Concorde Experience tours and of course, the café will be open all day for refreshments and meals. FESTIVE CLOSE TO GUILDFORD BOOK FESTIVAL 2019

eading poet Carol Ann Duffy ensured the 2019 Guildford Book Festival came to a triumphant close on Sunday (17 November) with readings from her new Christmas poem, Frost Fair, and seasonal song by the Fayrfax Singers, led by Nerissa Taysom. The annual Festival, which this year celebrated its 30th season, brought a wealth of top authors and household names to Surrey’s premier literary event. Highlights included celebrated actor and star of ‘Poirot’, David Suchet; award-winning adventurer and TV presenter, Steve Backshall; hugely popular historian and broadcaster Dan Snow; global bestselling novelists Louis de Bernières, Sarah Perry and Tracy Chevalier; much-loved presenter of Countryfile, John Craven and Pam Ayres, the nation’s favourite poet. Killing Eve fans enjoyed an evening with author Luke Jennings; Katy Brand shared her obsession with cult film Dirty Dancing and Downton Abbey devotees discovered all about Christmas at Highclere Castle – the Real Downton Abbey – from The Countess of Carnarvon. The Festival welcomed leading local authors, including quantum physicist and broadcaster Professor Jim Al-Khalili, who is based at the University of Surrey; Alison Weir, the UK’s biggestselling female historian and multi-million bestselling Adele Parks, who introduced her latest novel, Lies Lies Lies. Award Winning Patisserie & Chocolaterie We talk to Chris Bachmann from Bachmann’s Patisserie Why is Christmas special at Bachmanns? I think it comes down to our products- we make such a variety of Christmas specialities that everyone who comes through the doors can find something special they like to give as a gift or treat themselves. Over the years we have built up an ever growing long fan base of a “Bachmanns Christmas”. Our regular customers always make a trip in December to see what my team have created, and the shop is always busy during Advent, when we the shops look so festive. What sells best at Christmas? That’s a difficult one! It changes from year to year if I’m honest. We make Stollen, Christmas Puddings, Christmas Cakes, Mince Pies, Christmas Petits fours, and a bewildering array of Chocolate Christmas products. If I had to pick out favourites, it would be difficult to be honest, but our Prune and Cognac Tart was previously named as the best Christmas Cake or dessert in the UK, and more recently, our Lebkuchen was named the best gingerbread, so I guess I’m particularly proud of those. A few years ago we won a national Design award for our Chocolate Christmas pudding- it’s a bit like an Easter Egg in concept , with crunchy almond chocolates inside, and I always take one 36 DECEMBER 2019

home for my two boys at Christmas- that’s a really fun product. Our products are only available in the month before Christmas so that makes it special, but also a challenge! “Tell us a little about the history of Bachmanns” My Dad started the business with my Mum in Thames Ditton in 1989. After training in Switzerland he’d enjoyed a stellar career in confectionary including stints as the executive pastry chef at the Dorchester and The Park Lane Intercontinental, and the Chief confectioner at the Swiss centre in Leicester Square. He wanted to create the kind of local shop that they have in Switzerland; a store that covers all aspects of chocolate and confectionary, at the highest of standards. Since it has started, Bachmanns Patisserie has gone on to win over 30 national awards, so I guess you can say he achieved that. I think that the real reason that we have been so successful over the years, and what I think sets us apart from many places, is the variety and sheer excellence of his recipes. Our products have a simplicity and clarity of flavour that is hard to match, and we do take care to never compromise on the quality of our ingredients. Across the year, we make over 450 different products, and change them through the seasons, so anyone will be able to find a favourite, and it keeps it exciting for our regular customers. I took over the business just over ten years ago, on his retirement, but he still provides my team with inspiration and guidance- in fact he’s in Thames Ditton right now making our German Lebkuchen (gingerbread)! A few years back we opened our second store in Weybridge, which was very exciting. It has allowed us to expand- we now have about twenty staff- and had the space to create a special separate chocolate room there, where we produce all our chocolates. The two sites both have their own pastry kitchen and they run in tandem, with each site specialising in certain areas, but all our products are hand finished every morning in both shops. It was a doubling of size and a huge investment for us. So far it has been a great success, and it’s been very satisfying – and a relief(!) to watch the business grow. “What gets you up in the morning and what do you like about being in the confectionary business?” Well, what drives me is to maintain the standards my Dad set, which is a challenge! I want to continue to make Bachmanns a special place to visit, where you get great products and excellent service in a friendly family atmosphere. There is nothing better than making our customers happy- it’s a nice business to be in as we get an immediate reaction from our customers to what we do. If we have created something for them that delights them, we usually get the feedback, which keeps us all motivated.

Celebrate Christmas with Tramp

ondon’s Tramp members club has enjoyed a year of celebrations in preparation for its official, 50th anniversary party on December 17 - but for those hoping to squeeze in a last toast, the iconic venue is offering members a luxurious tasting menu to help see in the new year. The club on Jermyn Street has seen in more new years than any of its competitors and just as its first members celebrated the turn of the decade in 1970, corks will pop and champagne will flow around the tables of the venue’s restaurant and discotheque. The evening will begin with Louis Roederer Brut Premier as guests are invited to take their tables for a seven course menu incorporating Turbot fillet with butter poached langoustines; Beef Wellington served with sauce Périgourdine and Champagne granita. But Tramp’s reputation was not built on fine food alone, and as the final Macaroons are polished off and guests begin to edge towards the dancefloor, it will be the club’s legendary party atmosphere that sweeps the crowd into the year 2020. It is a momentous occasion for the club, not just because it marks the end of their 50th anniversary celebrations, but because the team have been busy ensuring the next half decade is as successful as the last. magine for a moment…taking a peaceful summer ramble through the Hurtwood, enjoying the typical sounds and sights of a woodland walk, only to have the peace interrupted by the sound of the ‘great guns’ spreading into southern England and resonating around the Surrey Hills. You had thought the only airborne sound was that heard further north, where the skies over Brooklands are filled with Surreymade aircraft being tested before heading off to the Western Front. The large area of deserted common land near your village is now a sea of bell-tents, housing enemy aliens and prisoners of war. At the farm down the road, elephants are now pulling the ploughs and, as if their trunks were purposegrown for the task, bundling hay onto carts. Wheat now sways in the breeze on the course where you enjoyed a round of golf. The conkers your children collect are no longer for entertainment, but to be sent to King’s Lynn for the extraction of acetone for the manufacture of explosive cordite. Your children also love to help collect eggs for the newlyopened Red Cross Hospital at the nearby manor house, at which your eldest daughter is proudly wearing her uniform as a volunteer nurse. Your wife, meanwhile, works for the local women patrol ensuring young soldiers and munitions workers behave in the back rows of the cinema. Your local rector, who speaks fluent German, has aroused suspicion amongst both parishioners and authorities as having pro-German sympathies. On your recent trip to Richmond you have found to your

surprise an array of Belgian shops: a patisserie, a tobacconist, a toymaker and cafes, serving the large number of Belgian refugees now residing there. With the traditional strong focus on the impact of large numbers of local men going off to war and the consequent devastating losses, it may have been hard to imagine the variety of other ways in which the First World War touched life in Surrey, but these and hundreds of other fascinating stories of the War’s impact on the home front have been uncovered by Surrey Heritage over the four-year centenary of the First World War through its National Heritage Lottery Fund-supported project Surrey in the Great War: A County Remembers. More than one hundred volunteers have been researching their localities and contributing information and stories to the project’s website, www.surreyinthegreatwar.org.uk. The discoveries made have now been captured in an engaging and beautifully-illustrated book, In the Shadow of the Great War: Surrey 1914-1922, which, drawing on the rich archives at Surrey History Centre, explores the experiences of those living and working in Surrey at that time. visits the newly opened Giggling Squid in Weybridge
I
t was one of those miserable grey November evenings, the drizzle had been persistent all day but as soon as we walked through the door at the Giggling Squid in Weybridge and were greeted by smiles, warmth, beautiful décor and my mood cheered up immediately. The décor is very rustic, contemporary and very pretty, with silk flowers adorning the walls and arches over some of the tables. We also loved the panels of flowery wallpaper and the interesting and innovative artwork with displays of squid and jelly fish . Most of the furniture and decoration is imported from Thailand. The waiting staff were all very cheery , friendly ,efficient and welcoming, and the menu options were shatteringly good with fresh, fragrant inspirational options to choose from. The tantalising description of each dish made decisions even more difficult. The dishes are prepared by Master Thai Chefs and to start we decided to share three dishes from the tapas menu including Lemon and Lime Tuna Petals, Grilled Squid & crisped Thai Garlic and Mah Kwan Pepper Pork Belly - these were just £17 for three, great value for such deliciously fresh options. All three were absolutely scrumptious - the pork melted in the mouth and was a great contrast to the crispy noodles, The squid was soft, succulent and not at all chewy, with a wonderfully flavoursome

sauce which was flavoured with a sweetness that is specially imported from the north of Thailand and exclusive to Giggling Squid. The Tuna Petals also with Thai peppers were fragrant and very delicate, contrasting beautifully with the richness of the other two plates. I also visited the Ladies, beautiful with gorgeous fresh flowers and dazzling chandeliers, so much attention to detail. For the main course we chose Heavenly Squid - a beautifully soft squid with the contrast of coconut, it really lived up to its name, it was heavenly! The Prawn Curry was light with a lovely flavour of lemon grass running through, really delicious and a nice change to coconut based curries. For dessert we shared a Pineapple Coconut and Mekong Sorbet and a Mango cake. My first mouthful of the Caremilised Mango Cake was divine after the flavoursome main course, this really delighted the taste buds. The Sorbet was just as described, like a pina colada that melts on the tongue. Our table was in the window but as you walk further down the restaurant there are tables with cages of charming flowers surrounding them - I must say the ambiance was stunning. Before we left we checked out the Christmas menu which sounded delicious - Three stunning courses for only £29.95, there was definitely something for everyone and I would highly recommend this if you haven’t already booked a Christmas gathering. Overall this was a wonderful experience - the best Thai food and most friendly service I have experienced recently. he costs of funding a divorce and financial proceedings can be an important factor in deciding how to progress a matter. It can often be the case that funds aren’t available to pay solicitor’s bills as they are raised, which may see the process stall. olesden Lacey, the National Trust property nestled within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, was the weekend party house of Edwardian socialite, Dame Margaret Greville. Mrs Greville was a great collector. When she left Polesden Lacey to the National Trust, her vast collection included fine art, furniture and ceramics, as well as Fabergé, Cartier and even a diamond encrusted bookmark. As you’d expect, Mrs Greville’s epicurean tendencies included jewellery. As well as collecting unset gemstones on her world travels, Mrs Greville was a frequent patron of Boucheron and Cartier; asking them to make and remake pieces from her own collection as well as commissioning new pieces. When Mrs Greville passed away in 1942, she bequeathed “with my loving thoughts” all of her ‘real’ jewellery to the Queen Mother. Some of Mrs Greville’s pieces of jewellery are still worn by the Royal Family today. A Good Divorce is better than a Bad Marriage Family law and high net worth finance specialist Claire O’Flinn advises that even in the most difficult of cases, seeking the right support and guidance early on makes it possible to bring the two words “good” and “divorce” into a strong and lasting conjunction.

t is sometimes argued that it is easier to reach an amicable split where both parties are independently wealthy. This is a myth that must be dispelled. Even in the most modest financial circumstances, a good divorce, dissolution or separation is possible. This is often achieved when both parties obtain independent legal advice and support promptly. This allows a family lawyer to guide them through the varied routes to settlement including mediation, counselling, therapists, roundtables, and only occasionally the court. It means that a bespoke roadmap can be devised that exactly meets the needs of a particular family. Coverage of celebrity divorces can often give a false picture of the way that divorce works. It is very rarely the harrowing courtroom drama that is often portrayed on television. The reality is that it is possible to divorce and settle all matters relating to your children and finances without stepping into a court at any stage at all. Good representation can help steer parties away from conflict and the use of inflammatory language; they will guide parties towards

placing the best interests of children first; and towards acting with honesty, integrity and objectivity. They will know how to settle matters satisfactorily on paper, but also the point at which it becomes necessary to ask for the assistance of the courts. Even where a matter does go to court, contrary to popular belief, the law is not biased in favour of women over men. Where it is has been in the best interests of children to be placed with a father, this has often been achieved. Where a husband has been dependent on his high-earning spouse, they have successfully advocated for him to receive maintenance. The experience they have is that the court’s focus is on achieving fairness and does not have a gender-biased approach. Historically, more men have been ordered to pay maintenance than women because men typically earned more than women and traditionally did not stay at home to raise children. But times are changing. Whether you are looking to achieve a good divorce, dissolution of a civil partnership or separation following cohabitation, it is important to remember that there are no set formulas for working out what happens when a relationship ends. Christmas at Kew 2019 Brand new trail illuminates the magnificent Treetop Walkway and Temperate House Until 5 January 2020 reflections and a ‘Sea of Light’ at their feet. In another mirroring of nature, Australian studio Mandylights brings Vines to the trail. A 30-metre long promenade of LED vines that visitors can walk through, touch and interact with, each vine houses up to 8,000 individual colour-changing pixels, making for an otherworldly immersive experience. Trees along the route are illuminated from different angles, allowing visitors to admire their striking winter forms. his winter, more twinkling and fantastical than ever before, Christmas at Kew returns, inviting visitors to experience the night time beauty of a new trail, illuminated by over one million lights. The route includes some incredible showstoppers, such as the recently restored Temperate House – the largest surviving Victorian glasshouse in the world – which forms the canvas for a kaleidoscopic laser show. Visitors can expect bursts of colour and enchanting optics with a feast of art, light and music at every turn.
Myths and magic… French creative Studio Pitaya has brought Bifröst to Christmas at Kew, drawing inspiration from the bridge of light in Norse mythology. Set at the beginning of the trail, visitors can wander through a tunnel of 20 light arcades, the hypnotic animations bringing them through to the magical landscape beyond. Australian studio Mandylights has returned with Will o’ the Wisps. The installation sees thousands of pixel mapped ‘wisp’ forms perform in different ways to reflect their diverse origins - from devilish displays of red mischief, to soft glowing orbs, to explosions of vibrant colour. Visitors can also meander through a Fire Garden with enchanted ruby and emerald flames, as pyrotechnic artist Mike Jones brings his spellbinding work to Kew.
A tumbling waterfall and forest of vines… The centrepiece of this year’s event, Brighton-based ITHACA has brought Waterfalls to Kew’s arboretum. With four spiralling columns of light cascading from the Treetop Walkway in the canopy above, the mesmerising display captivates visitors with dazzling

The renowned Palm House finale features festive projections playing across a giant screen of water in the centre of the lake, and across the iconic glasshouse itself.

CHELSEA PENSIONERS INSPECT THE RANKS OF BRITAIN’S FRESHEST CHRISTMAS TREES
A
group of Chelsea Pensioners – the retired army veterans who live at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, famous for their scarlet uniforms – had a surprise tour of duty at Yattendon Estates in Berkshire for the Christmas trees that will soon be raising money for the historic institution.. The trip was organised by Capital Christmas Trees, who will be providing freshly harvested trees directly from the estate to be sold in the Royal Hospital’s elegant South Grounds. Home of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show on the Embankment, The Royal Hospital will offer a superb selection of fresh trees giving London families the chance to pick out their own special tree and know that it’s as fresh as if they had travelled to Yattendon Estates themselves. This is the first time that the Royal Hospital has sold Christmas trees, and a commission on every sale will help to raise funds for the Grade I listed buildings, which was commissioned by Charles II and designed by Sir Christopher Wren as a permanent home for old soldiers. The Chelsea Pensioners spent the day as guests of Lord Iliffe, who lives and works at Yattendon Estates. He was a pioneer of the UK Christmas tree industry in the 1970s and has seen the farm operation expand to harvest more than 50,000 trees each year. Allan McLaren, Acting Head of Fundraising at the Royal Hospital, said: “We would like to thank Capital Christmas Trees and Lord Iliffe for offering our retired soldiers a great day out and a chance to get into the Christmas spirit a little earlier than usual! We are really looking forward to selling these lovely trees and we are sure they will be very popular in Chelsea. ulti award winning salon group Academy Salons UK recently held an Diversity themed in-salon hairstyling competition for their apprentices. Participants gave inspired presentations referencing incredibly creative mood boards. They sourced models and outfits, and undertook their own styling and makeup. The results were uniformly stunning, all the more impressive because some of the apprentices had only a few months’ experience. A quartet of expert and exacting judges comprised Victor Pajak Headquarters Kingston, Sarah Morrissey of Sarai Hair, Phil Collins from HairUncut, and Julie Allen from Jools PR. Rebecca Byrne from the Weybridge Salon presented 2 outstanding and very diverse looks contrasting Spring and winter beautifully. Rebecca was awarded 1st prize and won a place on a prestigious course with L’Oreal. Charlotte Rosser from the Claygate Salon was runner up, she signposted mental health and curled and coloured her male model, contrasting that with a female model with a stunning beehive. Jamylee Russell from the Cobham Salon was in third place with an older and a younger model she created beautiful rainbow colours and sourced black and white tee-shirts printed with diversity, the effect was very strong. All the competitors were given constructive feedback on all aspects of their in X Factor style!!

HIP PAIN DO I NEED TO CONSIDER A HIP REPLACEMENT?

Mr Singer has been practicing at the Spire Thames Valley Hospital for the last 20 years as a hip specialist SYMPTOMS: A patient may develop hip pain due to a variety of reasons but the commonest is simple osteoarthritis. The pain is generally felt over the front of the hip in the groin and tends to be referred down the thigh to the knee. The pain is brought on by activity, and there may be difficulty with putting on shoes and socks.
WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE? Patients with pain around this area may also be suffering from pain referred from the low back. This pain tends to be felt more in the buttock and down the back of the leg. Muscular pain from the tendons that work the side of the hip or trochanteric bursitis is also commonly seen and that pain is felt very much on the side of the hip. This can be treated by either physiotherapy or injection of cortisone.
WHAT SHOULD I DO? Patients generally seek help from their GP or a physiotherapist in the first instance. Alteriation of daily activities, analgesics or anti-inflammatory medication, topical anti-inflammatory gels, and fish oil supplements, can all help to ease the condition. Light aerobic exercises such as brisk walking is encouraged but one should avoid impact activities such as jogging. Physiotherapy or osteopathic treatment may also help. Once these measures have been tried then a referral should be made to an Orthopaedic Hip Specialist. Seeing the orthopaedic consultant involves discussion about the nature of the pain and an examination of the hip. X-rays are performed to assess the degree of arthritis and if these are inconclusive, an MRI scan may be indicated. If the diagnosis is confirmed and patients have tried non-surgical measures, then hip replacement surgery 70 DECEMBER 2019
would be discussed along with the pros and cons of the surgery. On some occasions an injection of corticosteroid would be advised.
WHAT DOES A HIP REPLACEMENT INVOLVE? Patients attend a pre-operative assessment visit at the hospital one to two weeks before. The surgery can be performed either under a general or regional anaesthetic. Mobilisation is commenced the next morning and this is supervised by our team of physiotherapists. Patients are given blood thinning medication to prevent deep vein thrombosis and compression stockings to be worn for a total of 5 weeks. Patients will generally stay in hospital for 3 – 4 days. At home they are given instruction to perform physiotherapy exercises. Patients should avoid driving a motorcar for 6 weeks and they can return to work at 6 – 8 weeks. Hip replacements generally last for 15 years or so depending on activity and lifestyle.

ip gloss is one of those items that can take you straight back to the Nineties - a time when all the make-up know-how you needed was the ability to apply a slick of sticky, glittery, berry-flavoured gloss to your mouth. And now it’s back - and luckily, it’s had an adult update. One of the best things about lip gloss is just how easy it is to use. Unlike some of the more complicated beauty trends of the moment - looking at you contouring - all you have to do is swish it on your lips in a vaguely neat way. So here are some of the lip gloss trends ruling the high street and the catwalks at the moment. And don’t worry, formulas have moved on since the 1990s you shouldn’t have your hair sticking to your lips quite so often...
Pale and interesting Two decades ago, the idea of lip gloss giving you a ‘no make-up make-up’ look would have been practically inconceivable. Now, it’s very much on trend. Instead of going for a crazy colour or sticky finish, opt for a shade that suits your lip colour and gives it a softer, natural look. Depending on your skintone, gentle rosy pinks and peach colours work well, making your lips look polished and dewy - like you’ve just rolled out of bed, in a good way. The key to this look - and when applying any lip gloss - is preparation. “Ensure your lips are well prepped by using an exfoliator first to get rid of any dryness,” explains Sascha Jackson, lead make-up artist at Stila

UK. “If you are using a nude or semi-transparent gloss, I recommend using a lip liner close to your natural lip colour just to create shape.”
Glass lips Once you’ve mastered paler shades, you’ll be ready to graduate to a glass finish; a lip gloss with an extra-shiny, almost mirror-like look to it. “This is a slightly wet look all over, which gives a healthy and youthful appearance,” explains make-up artist Stacey Whittaker. “This particular look is

popular on catwalks and creates an editorial feel. My top tip for applying gloss is that a little goes a long way,” she adds. “Apply a small amount to the centre of your lips and use your finger to carefully blend this towards the outer corners.” With an ultra-glossy lip, it can be hard to know what to do with the rest of your make-up. “I like to team this with a glossy or creamy finish on the cheeks, but then a matte or suede eye,” notes Jackson. “The difference in textures really complement each other.”

Plump it up If you’re not keen on injectables or other enhancements, there are plenty of products on the market that offer a non-surgical plump-up - all you have to do is swipe on some lippy. In fact, the phrase ‘plumping lip gloss’ has seen a 45% increase in searches on Pinterest from October 2018 to October 2019. These kinds of lip glosses tend to include tingle-inducing hyaluronic acid, a beloved skincare ingredient often used to help with hydration - and better hydrated lips can mean a bouncier, fuller pout. Lady in red A bold red lip is a classic look, and one most of us apply with lipstick. But what about trying that red lip with gloss? You might find it’s easier to apply and lasts longer. Either opt for an already shiny red lip gloss, or use any red you have and layer a clear product on top. “For the festive season, adding a soft sheen gloss over a pop of coloured lipstick is bang on trend for Christmas 2019,” says Whittaker. “Opting for a soft sheen will add dimension to your lips and create a plump and full effect.”

s the Christmas entertaining season heralds large gatherings of family and friends at home, we’ve called upon luxury interior designers Stephenson Wright to reveal their expert advice on creating a stylish and welcoming living room for family entertaining. ‘When first approaching the design of a classic living room space, the four key elements we consider at the outset include: lighting, texture, colour and art. Lighting can really make or break a space – it’s vital to get the balance right and especially in more relaxed entertaining areas to thoughtfully layer the lighting design. A combination of wall lights with table lamps can be used to great effect to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Well positioned lights also 82 DECEMBER 2019
contribute to the balance and symmetry of the room and using dimmable options makes a huge impact on setting the overall scene. Adding texture to the scheme can dramatically change the feeling of a living room. We love to use textured, warm, tonal wallpaper, such as grasscloth and paper-backed silk (also available in vinyl versions for practicality). Our go-to suppliers are Phillip Jeffries and Fromental and we have used their stand-out designs in our luxury lifestyle showroom, ‘The Post House’. Phillip Jeffries’ rattan weaved wallcovering and Fromental’s unique hand painted and embroidered wallpaper are both much admired by our clients who like to invest in show-stopping designs. The colour palette we are often drawn to for a family living room includes tones of green, blue and pink – pulling from nature as our primary inspiration, together with warm neutrals. We would suggest a shot of brave colour to add interest and originality – perhaps on cushion or upholstery piping or a curtain trim. Mixing up styles of furniture and soft furnishings will create a truly bespoke look, but overall, the colours and fabric patterns should tone together. The use of art injects personality into the room, whether bold, fun or monochrome – it doesn’t need to match perfectly, but if there is a colour thread, then it looks well considered. We often use a client’s own art as a starting point for a scheme, but also enjoy working with local artisans and artists to create bespoke pieces too. Finally, consider the all-important comfort factor of your seating and ensure it is well positioned for easy conversation. Side tables for drinks and nibbles should be within easy reach for all. What started as a barn design pool house was transformed into what you see below after the client approached them, inspired by another building they had seen. This design is unlike anything Origin has built before and needless to say, both the company and the clients are thrilled with the results. As Origin do it all, they were able to work closely with the clients from the start, take on board their vision and come up with a design that was not only feasible, but one that looked great too. Everything about the pool house is unique, from exterior shape to the application of the cedarwood planks used vertically instead of a horizontal layout. The interior pool house boasts a kitchen area, changing room and bathroom facility as well as a stunning pool, contemporary sliding doors that allow the outside in and a virtual transparency to take account of the amazing surrounding countryside. A source of inspiration and hope, they seek to tap into the current Zeitgeist, using the evocative language of colour to express what words and politics cannot. This year, they’ve released four key palettes – Meaning, Creativity, Care and Play. Central to each chromatic composition is the shade ‘Tranquil Dawn’— a milky sage that oozes serenity. According to the experts, “it reflects a growing desire to understand what it is to be human at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected.”

nd while colour might seem like an optimistic salve to such an existential issue, we know that our environment has the power to shape how we think and feel, which in turn informs our actions. Creating a home that rejuvenates, inspires and soothes is a necessity in today’s hyperconnected world, and colour offers us a crucial way in. With this in mind, we’ve taken each of the palettes proposed by Dulux and investigated how they can be deployed to create a stylish and inspiring home. The meaning palette features neutrals that go beyond the usual beige and into more promising, evocative territories. Dark charcoals meet sea-shorn greys only to be uplifted by hazy greens and soft lavenders. Together, they offer a sophisticated alternative to pastels, swapping bubbly millennial hues for something a little more serene. Yearning to turn your rooms into soothing havens? Gabrielle Fagan asks The White Company founder Chrissie Rucker for her secrets. In it, Rucker reveals her own homes, shared with her husband and their four children, as well as a host of other beautiful examples, which she describes as “real homes that are not just wonderfully white and neutral but also full of character, personality and individuality”. The current stressful times we’re living in make creating calm, tranquil cossetting spaces even more vital. “I think that’s become more important now than ever, given the pace of life, work and all the pressures that we have to deal with,” says Rucker. “We all need an escape and a place to feel calm and relaxed. That’s why white works so well for me, and that was also how The White Company started - offering all the essentials for living with white.”
Here, Rucker tells us more about her love of white and how to make it work for you in your home... Why do you love living with white? “White is not one colour but a thousand different shades and tones. It’s this wonderful, soothing palette of naturals and neutrals that are all

And it’s fair to say that few know or understand how true this is more than her - it’s been 25 years since Rucker created her business, which has become a hugely successful go-to destination based on that very philosophy. Remarkably, The White Company was born out of her frustration when she tried to help her then boyfriend (now her husband), businessman Nick Wheeler furnish his home. “Nick only had a few chipped mugs, some green towels and burgundy bed linen,” recalls Rucker with a smile. “I tried to find all the basics in white; the china, bed linen, towels, bathrobes and napkins. But I was completely overwhelmed with pattern and colour, I went home with my tail between my legs. I decided simplicity is often best and less is more.” Marking the brand’s milestone anniversary, her enduring passion for white is celebrated in her new book, For The Love Of White: The White & Neutral Home.

White, she points out, “works with the old and with the new, with antiques and modern pieces, so it becomes timeless”. Do you think white works in any kind of setting? “I think the book proves that, yes, it does. We have townhouses that are restful retreats, where you can come in and close the door and forget about the city outside, which is really important when our lives are so hectic. “But we also have country homes and seaside escapes, where neutral colours and natural materials create a soft, warm and wonderful backdrop for family living,” Rucker adds. She highlights that each home shares the same choice of neutral palette but has it’s own highly individual blend of ingredients - from architecture and materials to fabrics and textures, which are layered in subtle and sensitive ways. What makes a white room really come alive for you? “White brings all the details of a room to life and then becomes this perfect canvas for all the layers that you want to add - the furniture, fabrics, art, books and little treasures,” says Rucker. Rooms, she says, should be furnished to appeal to all the senses - something she feels can often be overlooked. “Soft white towels and crisp sheets, stacks of white plates and folded napkins at the dinner table, along with all those little, personal touches that make a house into a home,” she notes. “So touch is really important to me and introducing lots of different textures, but sight and smell also need to be nourished,” she explains. “It’s why I love candlelight and being by the fireside, or spending time in a beautiful spa-like bathroom.”

renwith is a fictional Cornish Estate that Rebecca and Alison the cofounders of Cream, have created to form the basis for future collections which will involve life living in an idyllic Cornish manor house overlooking a sheltered creek. The Trenwith’s, Niall and Loveday, their children and pets will provide inspiration for future collections through their ancestor’s adventures and the estates history. “You will find Trenwith at the end of a long driveway, filled either side with hydrangeas, camellias and rhododendrons, sitting above sloping lawns leading down to Trelonk, a sheltered creek at the top of the Helford river, only accessible to all but the smallest keeled boats at low tide. A large walled garden sits behind the Elizabethan house, with a gate, dating back to the 16th century, which leads to an orchard filled with fruit trees. There is an ice house, no longer used now of course and the pineapple house has been given over to growing herbs. The beehives are one of Lovedays latest projects and the honey is sold under the estates label, which now has a large range of products including Cornish tea. Much to their surprise, it’s

been very popular in China and Niall has been busy working out how to export a Cornish cream tea to accompany it.” The design duo explain the inspiration behind the beautiful new country range: Alison: “Cream Cornwall is the essence of country and coastal living and Trenwith is perfect for both. We took ages sampling the six colours, until we felt that there was the perfect colour choice for anyone, whether they lived by the sea or the depths of the Cornish countryside.” Rebecca: “Trenwith epitomises the Cornish countryside, especially in the Autumn when I often have to brake for fear of running over a pheasant in the road. Behind the desk they designed, made and installed an impressive bespoke fitted shelving and storage

unit all in sycamore to match the desk for the ultimate seamless aesthetic. Finally, the look was completed by incorporating beautiful book matched onyx backboards with downlighters creating a cool and luxurious ambiance. The front door can make or break how good your property looks from the outside. It takes just eight seconds to decide whether or not you will buy a house, according to the latest research. And at least four of them will be spent waiting at the front door. People look at a front door before they look at anything else - your front door reflects what you think about the house. A door can sell a property. A front door must be in keeping with your property - planked doors can work well on barn or warehouse conversions or newbuilds.

ut there is no escaping the universal charm of the Georgian front door - solid, well-constructed, but at the same time curiously domestic and welcoming. The classic Georgian combination of solid, panelled door with a glazed fanlight over the top, , is just magic. In fact, No10 Downing Street, Britain’s most famous front door, has changed in appearance only once in 300 years. It was an “unlucky” dark green for a brief spell at the beginning of the 19th century, when Herbert Asquith was prime minister. Number10 has been black ever since. It even bears a wonky “0” in the number 10 - a tribute to the original door, which had a badly fitted zero.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FRONT DOORS There are three main types here. Firstly you can opt for a front door made from solid wood. These are heavy and built to last, but they do require some upkeep. You’ll need to sand them down and repaint them periodically to stop the wood from rotting. However they do give you the opportunity to change the colour of the door whenever you want a change. Secondly you can get a uPVC front door. These tend to be a lot cheaper and some people buy them at the same time as getting their windows done. They’re easy to clean and never need any upkeep other than the odd wash and dry to rinse off any dirt and dust. And finally you could opt for a composite front door. As the name may suggest, they are made from a variety of different materials. The best material is chosen for each part of the door, providing the best overall performance as a result. Door knobs, knockers and letterboxes should
be in keeping with one another and sympathetic to the size and style of the door. Simple brass ring knockers and “Doctor’s” door knockers, popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, are two simple styles that suit both panelled and plank doors. Octagonal or round door knobs and handles and plain letterboxes work well with this simple look. Lionhead knockers and knobs with ornate embellishment are typical of the Queen Anne period while reeded (ridged) door furniture was used in late Georgian and early Victorian times. Edwardian door furniture is plain, with simple reeding, while Victorian is slightly heavier. Traditional-style door furniture coated in brushed and polished chrome and nickel creates a more contemporary look and works well with flatter, lighter colours.
FOCUSING ON SECURITY Clearly security will be an important element of any front door you choose. Ideally you should opt for one that offers multipoint locks. This essentially means the door will be locked into place at more than one point by a series of strong bolts. Your front door should ideally always have a split spindle design. This means when you close the door from the outside, the only way of getting back in is to use a key. It also means a thief cannot get into your house by opening the door by the handle from the outside (unless you have locked it from the inside). Multipoint locks should always have bolts that move into place by an upward turn of the handle from inside or outside your home. You then use the key provided to keep them in place. In some cases compression bolts are also provided in the door, to further secure it into the frame. Clearly the more bolts you have the more secure it will be.
