Exhibition: Revealing the Nature around Us By Claire Harrison This exhibition will showcase local artist, Claire Harrison’s brightly coloured oil paintings and intricate drawings, highlighting the miniscule on a large scale. Claire shows that the tiny wildflower or bright beetle in a grass verge is like a jewel amongst the undergrowth. Claire’s work explores the miniature and microscopic of both the floral and insect world. Fascinated with camouflage, she cleverly hides insects by using tone to conceal them. Just as you need to search to find mini beasts in a field, the audience will need to pause to find all the hidden dimensions. Claire’s Christmas cards will also be on sale. 9am-5pm, free entry. Waisted Efforts A visual feast, this exhibition charts the changing styles of the waistline in fashion from the 1750s to the 1950s. Cultural, social, and aesthetic attitudes towards waistlines are explored through men’s and women’s clothing, both outerwear and underwear. Beautiful examples of fashionable garments which both freed and constricted the waist are on show, as well as pieces of original foundation-wear essential for achieving the correct silhouette. Highlights include a stunning ‘sackback’ gown from the 1770s, a man’s suit from the 1780s, examples of women’s high-waisted Regency clothing, an exquisite girl’s dress from 1850, an 1880s day gown, a flapper dress from the 1920s and lovely examples of 1950s ‘New Look’ styles. The foundation wear includes corsets from a variety of eras, an Edwardian man’s corset, a 1920s bust bodice (designed to flatten the chest) and a ‘Waspie’ corset from the 1950s. The majority of the pieces are selected from the Olive Matthews Collection. Saturday 11am-4pm. Chertsey Museum, The Cedars, 33 Windsor Street, Chertsey, Surrey KT16 8AT

Silent Pool Distillers The Art of Distilling
F
ounded in the Spring of 2014, the Silent Pool Distillery was set-up with the vision of creating hand-crafted, premium spirits. Its location on the banks of the spring-fed Silent Pool, on the Duke of Northumberland’s Albury Estate, in the beautiful Surrey Hills – an area that was once flush with juniper berries – pays a fitting tribute to the main ingredient that creates the flavour of all gins: the delicately flavoured juniper berry. Each component in Silent Pool Gin is carefully selected and, where possible, locally sourced. A hose is passed through the open door of the distillery and draws water from the Silent Pool, a body of water that gives the spirit its name, beginning the unique four-stage production process. The gin is entirely crafted within the four walls of the distillery with precision and loving care even the bottling takes place here. The flagship spirit, Silent Pool Gin, was launched on the UK market in April 2015 to critical acclaim, winning several international Gold tasting awards (Gin Masters, IWSC, WSA, CWSA). The distillers have since turned their expert eyes to additional variants like Navy-strength and seasonal gin cordials - strawberry and blackberry - as well as rye vodka and Eau de Vies, so you can stock your entire drinks cabinet. They even do elegant copa glasses too! If you like the sound of all that, make your way online to their website (www. SilentPoolDistillers.com) where you’ll be able to peruse and buy Silent Pool’s award winning products, book a place on one of the distillery’s 90-minute Gin Experience Tours, and learn more about this artisanal spirit

company and its range of products. Their seasonal gin cordials, which are made with either strawberries or blackberries that have been freshly picked in nearby fields, taste great on their own, but we think they’re even better with a bit of fizz. And have you ever wished to recreate the expert flourish of a professional mixologist when making cocktails at home? Well now you can with Silent Pool Mist Liquid Garnishes. These ingenious little bottles have been devised to raise your homemade cocktail game to a new level. Each spray, distilled to 80% ABV and with the ability to create 120 drinks, covers the surface of your cocktail with a mist that that’s delicate, flavourful and aromatic, adding an extra dimension to all of your favourite tipples. Or why not indulge in Silent Pool Distillers’ latest offering - Silent Pool Gin-Infused Smoked Salmon? Intricately Realised Gin from the Surrey Hills and salmon from the cold waters of the North Atlantic have been combined to create a very special culinary experience. Delicately smoke flavoured salmon, cured in one of England’s last traditional smokehouses, is infused with Silent Pool Gin that has been hand-crafted to accentuate kaffir lime and juniper berries, to make what is probably the best smoked salmon you will ever taste. And the best bit of news is that you don’t have to go far to find the distinct teal and copper bottle. Silent Pool Gin is now distributed nationwide: Waitrose, Majestic, Wine Rack, Odd Bins, M&S, plus in more than 50 independents as well as across Europe and soon in the US. www.silentpooldistillers.com

A Ghostly Adventure: First Ever Novel Set at Surrey’s Brooklands Museum Released
Mark Richardson’s new novel ‘The Ghost at Brooklands Museum’ builds on the museum’s long standing reputation for being haunted
B
rooklands is a place known for its firsts. The Brooklands racing circuit, which was operational between 1907 and 1939 was the world’s first purpose-built racing circuit, which in turn played host to the first ever British Grand Prix. Now there is another addition to the list, the first novel set at Brooklands Museum, the institution dedicated to Brooklands’ rich motoring and aviation history. The museum is notorious for being a haunted location and over the years numerous sightings of ghosts have been reported, the most famous being the figure of Percy Lambert. Lambert was the first person in history to travel over 100 miles in an hour, a record he set in a Talbot car at Brooklands in 1913. Later that year, Lambert was tragically killed trying to improve on that record at Brooklands. Dozens of sightings of a ghostly figure resembling Percy Lambert, silently walking the area of the old Brooklands circuit have since been reported. Such ghost sightings formed part of author Mark Richardson’s inspiration for The Ghost at Brooklands Museum. “I’ve been visiting the museum since I was about 10 years old” explains Mark, “but it was only in more recent years when I attended a night-time tour of the museum that I encountered Brooklands’ ghostly past. I’d been toying with the idea of a novel set at the museum, but it was this visit where the pieces for the book clicked together.” Mark has also made the decision that all personal profits from the novel will be donated back to the museum. “Brooklands has a fabulous history and I was lucky enough
1 4 d e c EMBER 2 0 1 6
to spend dozens of happy weekends visiting whilst growing up. As such, I think it’s only right that all proceeds from the book go to the museum, helping it to continue the great and varied work it undertakes.” Valerie Mills, Commercial Director at Brooklands Museum said “Brooklands is a rich ground for writing inspiration and we were delighted when we heard about the publication of Mark’s novel. A number of our favourite museum pieces feature in the book, including the Napier-Railton, which holds the all-time Brooklands circuit lap record. Visiting Brooklands Museum has always been an enjoyable family experience. Now we have an exciting new novel to add to that day out!” The Ghost at Brooklands Museum is released by Troubador Publishing. It will be available as an e-book at most major retailers and the physical copy of the novel will be available at Brooklands Museum from early December 2016. The novel is aimed at an independent readership of 10 years+ and is suitable for family reading. All ghosts in the novel are friendly! A Wonderful Christmas at
Bachmanns
S
itting in Bachmanns in Weybridge at Christmas is a wonderful experience. It’s the first week of advent and the store is crammed full of the most gorgeous seasonal products. Customers are bustling in and out buying Christmas gifts and goodies and placing their orders for collection on the 24th December for the festive period. The tables are full of customers sitting sipping coffee and eating some of the finest pastries money can buy, admiring the exquisite decorations and goodies on display, or just looking through the window from the shop to the kitchen to see what next new creation is being prepared. There is a real buzz, and a lovely welcoming atmosphere, something that the staff at Bachmanns work very hard to create. “It’s something I think my team can be very proud of,” says owner Chris Bachmann, “We all work very hard, and the planning is meticulous, starting in Early September and continuing right until Christmas eve. I really believe that we have the finest and most comprehensive array of Christmas products, all made with love to my Fathers’ original recipes. We start with specially selecting the best Christmas fruits we can find, so the ingredients for our Christmas Cakes, puddings, Stollen and mince pies have been prepared and macerating slowly for two months in a combination of rum, sherry, brandy, tea, Grand Marnier and even Guinness. The dough for our traditional lebkuchen (german spiced gingerbread) has been fermenting for weeks and we turn this into gingerbread houses, triangles you can hand on your tree and then eat, and our new speciality, and my own personal favourite, a chocolate enrobed “sandwich” of gingerbread with an almond paste filling!” I have to say that they also look good too, with a striking Marzipan Santa on the top. “Rebecca, my head Chef in Thames Ditton came up with the Santa design for the outside- she’s done a great job.”
1 6 d e c EMBER 2 0 1 6
We walk over into the kitchen, where head chef, Wayne Harris, is preparing a range of Christmas petit fours, to secret Swiss recipes. From cinnamon stars and aniseed biscuits, to dark chocolate and hazelnut cookies and rich shortbread, they all taste divine, and, I notice, not that sweet! “That’s the secret of why Swiss patisserie is so good!” Says Chris, “Relatively low sugar means you can really taste the flavours we are working with, and it also gives a “lightness” to the products which makes them very moreish.” Bachmanns also have a fabulous range of Chocolate products, from snowmen, to Santas, praline Christmas trees, Christmas pudding flavoured choclate truffles, as well as a huge range of exquisite chocolate boxes. I sample a fresh champagne truffle freshly prepared by choclatier Dan Ellis OMG- amazing! “The secret is the combination of Ernst Bachmann recipes, and our wonderful Felchlin Swiss couvertures. We have been using it for years, and chefs are cottoning on- Jamie Oliver visited the factory in Switzerland for his channel 4 programme recently and described it as the best chocolate he’s ever tasted.” “Of course,” he adds with a twinkle in his eye, “we’ve known this for years!” Well, I’m certainly convinced! I strongly recommend that if you need a sweet treat for Christmas, you make the trip in December and see what all the fuss is about. You’ll be hooked. However there is still a lot of winter interest that can be found across the garden, from flowering blooms such as Camellia sasanqua ‘Paradise Blush’. These popular winter flowering shrubs provide a vivid splash of colour, that range from soft whites through to light pinks. They can be found growing in woodland areas, such as Battleston Hill, where they grow best because of shelter and shade. are intended to overwhelm visitors whilst also creating a magical, mysteriously cosy space. The installations are domestic cages, they appear familiar and comforting with a darker underlying theme of conflict. ‘Paper Cage’ chronicles a psychological journey to understand emotion within the unconscious memory. Each panel includes historical and cultural symbols entwined in graceful patterns. Although conceptually dark in character, the work appears delicate and decorative.

rom 10 December 2016 – 29 January 2017 a new exhibition ‘Young Contemporary Talent from The Ingram Collection’ will be on display at The Lightbox gallery and museum. This exhibition is the first in a series of solo shows from the artists represented in ‘Young Contemporary Talent’, a new fast-growing element of The Ingram Collection. In recent years, The Ingram Collection has been supporting young artistic talent by acquiring the work of artists graduating from UK art schools. Several of the artists represented, such as Haroon Mirza, Suki Chan and Alexander Hoda, have already gained international reputations. This first exhibition will showcase the piece ‘Paper Cage’ by artist Chloe Wing. Chloe Wing has an eclectic arts background. She has studied English, fashion design, poetry, performance and song writing, graduating in 2014 from UAL Wimbledon College of Art with an MFA in Fine Art. Chloe specialises in hand-cut paper, light and shadow installations. Inspired by Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois, Van Gogh and Tracey Emin, Chloe’s work is expressionistic, encapsulating human emotions such as fear, self-consciousness and isolation.

In response to ‘Paper Cage’, Chris Ingram explains how the piece is “a mass of contradictions. In one sense it’s a large scale solid piece yet it is only made of paper. In many ways it’s the shadows and the shapes that come from it which made the biggest impact, rather than the actual piece itself. You would expect something of that size to be totally sculptural and it’s not. Essentially it works best when it is dark, surreal and delicate and I have a real weakness for art like that”.

St George’s Junior School
welcomes Japanese Department of Education
The Japanese delegates at the visit to St George’s Junior School in Weybridge, Surrey
O
n Tuesday 29 November, St George’s Junior School in Weybridge warmly welcomed some very special guests as 18 delegates from the Japanese Department of Education visited the
School. With St George’s Junior School recently receiving the Quality Mark with Distinction from The Association of Physical Education (AfPE), becoming the first and only independent school to receive this highly prestigious award, the AfPE recommended the School to the Japanese delegates so that they could find out how St George’s Junior School teaches Physical Education. The delegates started their morning with a presentation from Director of Sport at the Junior School, Ms Waters,
and her staff. During the presentation, a number of topics were discussed, such as: the current situation of physical ability; fitness and exercise capacity of children at school; the reasons for promoting physical education and the impact physical education can have on a child’s health. The delegates listened intently and took detailed notes to take back with them. After this, the delegates were given a tour of the Junior School grounds and facilities, with all in attendance fascinated by the netball courts as they had never heard of netball before and did not know the rules, so Ms Waters and her staff duly gave them a quick example of how the game works. Once everyone was back in the warmth of the new Lower Years’ building ‘The Ark’, the guests tucked into a delicious afternoon tea and sandwiches. This was a wonderful opportunity for St George’s Weybridge to help show some of what it does for its children. Painshill begins restoration of one of its most spectacular 18th century follies
P
ainshill, England’s most elegant 18th century landscape garden is delighted to announce that restoration is now underway on The Temple of Bacchus. One of Painshill’s most treasured follies, holding a rich heritage and reputation, The Temple of Bacchus is the pièce de résistance to be completed in July 2017. With works now underway on the restoration of The Temple of Bacchus, Painshill are working closely with contractor Cliveden Conservation (who also restored the Crystal Grotto at Painshill), to reinstate the original vision and concept of the brilliantly imaginative designer Hon. Charles Hamilton. The Temple originally home to a collection of antiques collected by Hamilton during his Grand Tours to Italy, featured a seven foot marble centrepiece statue of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine as well as 12 marble busts of Caesars. And whilst the contents of The Temple of Bacchus were sold in 1797, the original foundations of the temple have been preserved and restored ready for the restoration. An important and historic folly which dates back to 1762, The Temple has been admired throughout history with previous visitors including John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States in 1786. It was also described by William Gilpin, English artist and landscape designer as ‘One of the most beautiful things of its kind that I have ever seen. Its form is Grecian and in the highest degree elegant and beautiful’. Michael Gove, Chief Executive of Painshill comments; ‘the restoration of The Temple of Bacchus has been longawaited and thanks to the benefit of a private donation, a fine casting from the original Bacchus statue has been gifted to the Trust and we are all very excited to see this housed in the completed Temple’. Restorations are now underway, with estimated
completion in July 2017, where it will be open for public viewing. Painshill Park Trust funds its business and conservation operations from visitor income and other revenue streams, but all restoration to date has been funded through the generosity of individuals and charitable trusts along with the Lottery Heritage Fund. Visit www.painshillpark.co.uk to find out how you can make a donation and be part of this remarkable project.
THE DETAILS Whilst anticipation builds for the restored folly’s reveal, the remaining 158 acre wonderland offering something for everyone, is open to the public 10am – 6pm (Mar-Oct) and 10am – 4pm (Nov – Feb).Visit www.painshill.co.uk to book your visit online. 6 0 d e c EMBER 2 0 1 6

Amazing Results Achieved at the Light Touch Clinic The Problem
The Problem
Our patient was close to her ideal body size but needed help shifting stubborn fat that was resistant to dieting and exercise alone.
Our patient wanted some gentle facial refreshment. In particular, she was concerned with fine lines and sagging skin.
The Solution
The Solution
Following a consultation with one of our body sculpting experts, the patient was recommended CoolSculpting, the original fat freezing treatment, to help redefine her waistline. Using a process called cryolipolysis, CoolSculpting cools the problem area to a controlled temperature which damages fat cells without compromising surrounding tissues. Over the coming months, the fat cells are naturally removed from the body.
BEFORE
AFTER
Janine Scott, our Senior Nurse Practitioner, recommended a combination treatment plan consisting of an 8-Point Facelift paired with ULTRAcel skin tightening. Using gold standard fillers, the 8-Point Facelift restores lost volume whilst minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. ULTRAcel is a fantastic treatment which uses ultrasound and radiofrequency to promote the production of collagen and elastin to tighten sagging facial skin with no downtime.
The Problem
The Problem
This young lady wanted a plumper yet natural-looking pout so she could look and feel her best on her wedding day.
With his wedding coming up, this patient wanted to slim down his stomach but didn’t have time for downtime.
The Solution
The Solution
Dr Natalie Blakely recommended lip filler injections to plump the patient’s lips. These fillers are non-permanent, lasting up to 12 months and are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body. Dr Natalie carefully injected the filler to gently add volume to the lips and enhance the patient’s natural shape.
Our body sculpting experts recommended that our patient had a course of Vanquish to lose some inches from around his waist. This award-winning treatment has the largest spot size in the industry as it tackles the whole abdomen from flank to flank in each treatment. Vanquish is a comfortable treatment which specifically targets fat cells and damages them with radiofrequency heat energy. The damaged cells are then removed naturally via the body’s lymphatic system over the next few months.

To achieve the panda effect, combine worn-in kohl with blurry mineral shadows in off-black shades, like smoky slate or burnt taupe. “What makes these smudgy eyes modern is that you can see the skin through the make-up,” explains Terry Barber, MAC UK director of make-up artistry. “Aim to work the makeup into the skin in veils.” TRY: Rituel de Fille Ash and Amber Eye Soot in Serpent de Mer, £30 (cultbeauty.co.uk); Topshop Kajal Kohl Liner in Lucky 13, £7 (topshop. com); Chanel Calligraphie de Chanel in Hyperblack, £25, (available November 4; selfridges.com)

ike the majority of people, I want bigger hair. While I have no problems with length (think mutant hair and nail growth!), when it comes to volume, I often fall flat. So when not one, but numerous friends revealed the secret to their swishy ‘cool girl’ hair was actually discreet extensions by Vixen & Blush, I wanted in. What makes them so different to other extensions? They specialise in micro rings and micro bonding methods, both of which are ideal for super-fine hair because the teeny extension bonds are virtually undetectable. Add to the mix an impressive colour blending technique that uses multiple hand-mixed hair tones (mine included a total of three colours), and I can see why Vixen & Blush has become a celebrity go-to. “After a consultation at the swanky exposed wood salon, I settle on a half-head of extensions, which is recommended if you want to add volume but not length. If the goal is longer locks, you’re looking at a full-head application, and double the time in the salon chair. Around 65 tiny micro rings colour-matched to my brunette locks are clamped into my hair to attach the extensions, which sounds painful but it’s not. The micro ring method also means there’s no scary hot glue involved, like traditional extension bonds. My stylist’s strategic placement is almost like a mathematical science, avoiding areas where I sweep my hands through my hair and finer baby hairs. “After a few hours, and a cut to seamlessly blend the new additions, I’m rewarded with swishier hair and chunkier ends. It’s like my own hair but a thousand times better, and best of all, nobody suspects a thing...” Vixen & Blush is located near Oxford Circus, London. Prices start at £335. Steininger’s vision became a reality for the first time in their conception of the concrete kitchen in 2004. Here there are no distractions. Life happens and penetrates all levels of the now. aunted by the prospect of moving house, this Walton couple with a school-aged son contacted Kate Diss at Sanctuary Kitchens. “They were happy with where they lived for the past nine years, with lovely neighbours and their son settled in a nearby school so wanted to look at the space they had and see how this could work better for their changing lifestyle,” recalls Kate. One of their main concerns was the dining room - they simply didn’t use it due to having a garden room where they had their dining table. “The brief was to open up the downstairs area and incorporate the unused dining room as well as upgrading the family bathroom and downstairs cloakroom too. They wanted clean lines and a sharp contemporary design. Sanctuary Kitchens and Bathrooms was their one stop shop for everything they needed,” she explains.
Layout The couple already had a builder assigned so Sanctuary was happy to provide the builder with all the necessary paperwork and electrical details to liaise with the build during the installation. “The decision to remove the dividing wall resulted in additional space to introduce an island,” explains Kate.
Cabinetry “We designed reflective high gloss white units with the integral capped handle, all made to our specification,” explains Kate. “This meant that we weren’t limited to set sizes and were able to order lots of deep drawers for crockery and pans, ensuring that everything was stored away and tidy.” Units feature a combination of storage solutions, so that the countertops can be kept clutter free. 8 2 d e c EMBER 2 0 1 6
Surfaces “We used a 30mm Nero Zimbabwe granite worktop throughout the kitchen and chose a statement blackcurrant toughened glass splash back to give the kitchen its ‘wow’ factor!” says Kate.
Appliances The client was a keen cook and his priority was to include a Fisher and Paykel American fridgefreezer with icemaker and a Fisher and Paykel range cooker. The integrated Miele appliances in the form of washer dryer, dishwasher and microwave kept everything hidden away from sight. The Miele Extractor, stylish, quiet and extremely effective was a perfect choice for this family room.
“We designed reflective high gloss white units with the integral capped handle, all made to our specification”
Lighting and accessories “A must for the island was a Sensio pod pullout power socket, providing 3 power sockets and a USB connection. This is a safe option when using small appliances with electrical leads so that the leads don’t get in the way,” explains Kate. We also added one of these into the worktop near the range cooker so to avoid having cut-outs in the glass splash back. LED under lighting was factory fitted into the thickness of the carcase eliminating the need for the addition of any form of pelmet and was paramount in showcasing the stunning blackcurrant splash back. Why spending more on a high quality timber front door is worthwhile to prevent problems in the future.
I
t is well worth UK property owners who decide they would like a new timber front door, or are looking to replace their old wooden door, carefully researching the product they are considering having installed before they order it. This is because most wooden front doors are prone to twisting and warping, so it is important to make sure any new replacement timber door is manufactured to a high standard and in a way that prevents such occurrences, and is made from high quality materials that best resist deterioration.
8 6 d e c EMBER 2 0 1 6
If you already have a wooden door, it is wise to always repair or repaint the door as soon as it shows even small cracks or paint peeling. Also polishing the door about twice a year can help keep the sealing in good condition. Recoat with Polyurethane or Varathane or similar sealant every two years. There is no denying that wooden doors can be incredibly pleasing on the eye at the very outset, but their appearance can quickly suffer once weathering and rotting takes hold. Only thorough and regular maintenance will sustain the aesthetics of timber, as it is essential not to allow water to penetrate, as if this happens, the wood will swell and warp, leaving your door in state that cannot be repaired without replacing it with a new one. If your front door is exposed to direct sunlight or the English weather, consider building a cover or eave over the doorway. This will also protect people who stand at your entrance in inclement conditions. If you decide to replace your old wooden door or have always wanted a new timber front door, choose a wood known to be weather resistant. Independent double glazing manufacturers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd, now offer high quality bespoke timber front doors and matching timber side panels. With over 30 years’ experience installing new front doors, Hazlemere will only supply and fit high end engineered timber doors. These high specification front doors are called “Century Doors”, and have an engineered solid core which is guaranteed not to move more than 1mm per square metre. This is achieved by the core being made up of 3mm sections known as “Lamels”, and 1 in 4 Lamels being reversed to prevent any movement, as wood otherwise moves naturally along the grain. These top end doors are edged or lipped on all sides with African Sapele hardwood known for its’ high density and stability, coming from the Gaboon tree. Also these Century engineered timbers doors all have 100% dense Tricoya facings. Tricoya is an acid treated product, bathed in acid to draw out water. The Century timber door gets its immense strength and security by a cleverly designed timber clad aluminium outer
frame, which is then clad with African Sapele to match the engineered timber sash exactly. These superbly engineered timber doors come in a choice of a 44mm timber sash in an 80mm deep UPVC frame, or a very substantial 54mm timber sash in an 80mm deep timber clad aluminium frame. Doors can be either single colour or dual colour. All these engineered timber front doors are painted with 4 layers of high quality Farrow & Ball paint. This special microporous Farrow & Ball paint allows the timber to breathe, as all timber “sweats”, so it important the moisture can escape. All Century engineered timber front doors are highly secure and can open inwardly or outwardly and have sculptured contours of typical wooden designs. High quality gaskets and closing seals ensure effective weatherstripping. The hardwood clad extruded aluminium outer frame is mitred and mechanically jointed. The Century engineered timber door is Secured by Design and comes with a Yale 3 star security 5-Pin cylinder as standard, as well as a Winkhaus lock and high security multi-locking system.
“The Century engineered timber door is Secured by Design and comes with a Yale 3 star security 5-Pin cylinder as standard”,
The high security glazing bead on all Century doors is of boxed construction and interlocks with the door profiles so that it cannot be prised off without first removing the internal wedge gaskets. At mid height, doors are secured by a spring latch and separate deadbolt. Two hooks bolts are thrown into keeps in the upper and lower door frame. Slow close greased hinges give these heavy duty doors great stability and smooth opening and closing operation. It is a true and time trusted saying that “you get what you pay for”. Consequently these bespoke made to order Century engineered timber doors are hand made in England by craftsmen, and all this quality of design, materials and unique manufacture comes at a cost. However, it is a one-off cost and an investment, as the Century door is designed to do all the things most hardwood front doors cannot achieve over time without regular maintenance, namely not warp, not twist, not swell, not crack or rot, keeping in tip top condition. THE DETAILS For free expert help and a no obligation replacement door consultation, contact Hazlemere Windows, family owned and run independent bespoke replacement door suppliers and installers since 1985. THE
HEART OF THE HOME
On average, people spend from £8,000 to a massive £20,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space…so depending on the price range, what can that buy you? Contemporary kitchens The sleek look that comes hand in hand with a contemporary kitchen will provide instant gratification. The practical use of space allows for more movement in the kitchen and provides easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment as you prepare those mouth-watering dishes. Also, contemporary colours provide a more open feeling which adds into the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.
French country kitchen This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifully-turned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate on the floor, black or cream enamel Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, so choose an antique-style armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood as a focal point. Hang copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware.
Shaker Style kitchen The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted 9 0 d e c EMBER 2 0 1 6
doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in.
Retro Kitchen A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points.
LAYOUT Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. There are people who want to frame pictures, wash dogs, even do keep fit in their kitchens. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multi-purpose – somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. “The vivacious party animal” needs a U-shaped kitchen with island in the middle and open ended for social gathering, for example. “The Good Life fans” prefers a big L-shaped layout with a range-style cooker, large fridge and freezer and large farmhouse table. “The London weekday bolthole” needs galley-style layout with plenty of wall storage cabinets because most of the below surface cupboards are filled with appliances and gadgets. Meanwhile the “pony club set” loves a free-standing pantry offset to a wrap-around kitchen with peninsula and, of course, an Aga.

Build your lifetime home, just the way you want it
Life Magazines speaks to Andrew Searchfield, owner and Managing Director of Searchfield Homes, a Surrey-based property development company that helps people to build their own luxury homes What are the advantages of building your own home? Most people end up compromising on something when they buy a property, however generous their budget. Appointing a professional property development company to build it for you means you can create the home you’ve always wanted, on the road and plot of your choice – and it can even save you money. Our research shows that you can save more than a fifth (22%) by commissioning your own build, compared to prices for similar new build homes on the open market. For a property worth £2million, it costs £466,000 less to build than buying the finished article from a developer. Stamp duty savings also make a compelling case for custom build. The stamp duty bill for a ready built home priced at £2 million will be an eye watering 12%, or £153,750, yet those commissioning their own build will only pay stamp duty on the plot they buy. If they already own it, the tax won’t apply at all. 9 4 d e c EMBER 2 0 1 6

It will be worth in excess of £5 million when it’s completed.
Is the government supporting custom build? Yes. Government policy is more favourable towards those wanting to build their own home now than it has ever been. Keen to double the number of self built homes to 20,000 per year
by 2020, the Government now requires local councils in England to keep a register of aspiring self and custom build developments, enabling them to plan for future land use.
Who are your typical customers? We usually work with families who have struggled in the past to find their lifetime home and don’t wish to compromise. They sometimes have strong ideas about what they want, others trust us to get on and design them a classically beautiful home that works for their lifestyle. Ultimately, our customers are people who want to invest in creating the home of their dreams, confident in the knowledge that it will come in on time and on budget. www.searchfieldhomes.com Top left and top circle: Waverley House A substantial 6-bedroom, 7,500 sq ft family home in an elevated position in Moor Park, one of the most sought after addresses in Farnham. hen it comes to our homes, individuality is something that most of us aspire to have. After all this is where you spend much of your down time with your close family. However the reality is often far from this, be it when we buy a packaged developer house or move into a newly purchased house which has not been designed to cater to your specific needs. This doesn’t have to be the way we live, and often you can look to adapt your home to be truly unique and reflective of your families individual needs. Tailored living is an approach to homes where by the individual and family are at the centre of the process. The house is designed around their everyday needs so it fits like a glove and can be designed to be adaptable to future preempted changes to the family. By doing this you will be investing in how well the house will work for your needs, and not adjusting and compromising how you live to work with the predetermined layout of the house. Your end up with efficient layouts, as well as an uplifting home environment where the family and individual can thrive and grow. There are lots of examples of houses where the design was established by the need of a developer who’s core focus will be profit, and often this can come at the expense of everyday practical needs of the eventual occupier. These houses are dressed to impress and often can be deceptive at first glance. However only once you are in do you realise they lack key aspects such as good storage or family friendly utility room, or where homework can happen now and once the kids get older, perhaps where elderly family members can stay when they visit, or quality if light, flow or room relationships are compromised etc. You can tailor a house that you currently live in, or one that you have just purchased. Either way, you start with the raw product which is the current house and you design it around your individual needs to form a family home which fits snug to your needs. Concept Eight Architects Ltd are an award winning, vibrant design led practice dedicated to the creation of imaginative and innovative buildings. The end result can a minor intervention, a completely new extension or a completely redesigned house throughout which has little resemblance of what was originally there. The scale and appropriateness of the change will depend on your needs and circumstance. For an appraisal, why not contact them and pop into their design studio for a chat about your house and how they might be able to help transform it. They will be able to explain their process of design through to completion. Could 2017 be the year you change your current house with its compromised living, and transform it to a home which has been redesigned to fit around your needs perfectly. Our environment can shape and define us, so why compromise in the very environment you spend most of your time in.
