ith beautiful winter views, a traditional children’s trail and a cosy fairytale cottage, Christmas is a very special time at Claremont Landscape Garden in Esher. The tranquil retreat of Claremont is a wonderful place to relax at any time of year, but when winter arrives the garden undergoes a magical transformation. As the leaves thin the low winter sun opens up views across the pleasure grounds, creating the perfect picturesque landscape to get you into the seasonal spirit. Real reindeer will return to Garsons at Esher to delight animal and mark the beginning of the festive season. Staying at Garsons in their specially built stable, the reindeer can be visited every day until Christmas Eve, when they will return to help Santa on the busiest night of the year. The reindeer will be looked after by specially-trained reindeer helpers, who will be on hand to answer questions and reveal fascinating reindeer facts. In the highly sought after village of Oxshott sits a very traditional butchers shop, sadly becoming increasingly rare these days. We spoke with Simon Taylor, patron butcher of Surrey Hills Butchers, to see why his butchers is going from strength to strength. Sandown Park Countryside Day
T
he jump season at Sandown Park got underway in fine style on in November . Sandown’s one and only Sunday fixture of the year, Countryside Day, provided an action packed afternoon of high quality National Hunt racing along with various complimentary ‘country pursuit’ activities, including falconry, pony rides and a petting farm. Cheltenham Gold Cup Hero, Coneygree, sent out a stark warning to those wanting to capture his Gold Cup crown after lighting up Sandown Park with a convincing success on his eagerly-awaited seasonal return in the 188Bet Future Stars Chase. Despite opposition being thin on the ground, the eight-year-old put in the sort of performance expected from a horse of his calibre when routing two rivals with the minimum of fuss to maintain his unbeaten record over fences. Sandown also hosted a number of activities and demonstrations throughout the day. There was a Falconry and Birds of Prey display, including 10 different birds. The Quack Pack run by Meirion Owen showcased the incredible talents of Border Collies and the communication between handler and his dog as they rounded up his pack of Indian Runner Ducks. His demonstrations were informative, educational and highly entertaining whilst also being interactive, allowing the audience to participate whenever there was the chance. Howard Kirby was also in attendance with his team of gun dogs to demonstrate a variety of dog training techniques and tips that can be applied to puppies’ right up to advanced gun dogs. With the fixture falling on
Remembrance Sunday, the Royal British Legion joined us at the racecourse to give everyone the opportunity to wear a poppy to show their support. Race day sponsors 188BET donated £300 for every Nicky Henderson and Mark Bradstock trained horse that had a poppy brushed into its hind quarter. The brilliant initiative raised £900 for the Royal British Legion. Also on show, for the first time, is a giant, walk-in snow globe for racegoers to have their photo taken in. You will then instantly receive a free souvenir photo for you to take home with you! There will also be live music from a festive band throughout the afternoon and the racecourse will also be hosting a sing-a-long Christmas carol session after racing, hosted by the New London Singers.

Guildford’s Academy Of Contemporary Music impress Drifters in a unique masterclass experience…
O
n November 4th Guildford’s Academy Of Contemporary Music (ACM) played host to legendary vocal group The Drifters whose hits include; ‘Saturday Night at the Movies’, ‘Up On The Roof ’, ‘Save The Last Dance’, and ‘Come On Over To My Place’. Aiming to deliver an unforgettable educational experience, ACM ran a competition for its students with the winner receiving a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform alongside the Drifters, the results of which were broadcast on local radio station 96.4 Eagle Radio. Fifteen students were selected to take part in the competition in which they learned and performed a number of classic Drifters tracks. The calibre of talent on show was extremely high with winner Ginnie Breakwell being chosen for her ‘natural performance skills and strong voice’. “My family have always been huge fans of the Drifters, so when I heard about them coming in, I had to audition. The competition was tough and I was thrilled to have been chosen as the winner. My tutor Jono McNeil was a huge help in preparing for my performance and whilst I was incredibly nervous on the day, I am really pleased with how the track turned out. It was amazing to meet all the Drifters and hear all their stories - they are such awesome guys. And I was thrilled when they ask us back to sing with them on their UK tour date in Croydon! Manager Kathy Mashadi was so impressed with vocalists Ginnie Breakwell, Sarah Martin, Eleanor Martin and Rhys Wilson that she invited them to perform live alongside the Drifters at their show in Croydon on November 22nd. “The Drifters masterclass and recording day here at ACM was a complete success. One of the finest and most eclectic selections of sculpture in Britain today FEATURED ARTIST - JENNY PICKFORD There is currently a tremendous winter display from one of the country’s leading female artist blacksmiths Jenny Pickford, who creates unique designs from galvanised forged steel and hand blown glass that possess a unique drama yet work in harmony with their surroundings. Her body of work includes small ‘Wildflower’ features for the more intimate locations, elegant water features, intricate entrance gates and of course gargantuan ‘Agapanthus’ to take pride of place in any setting.

T
he Sculpture Park in Churt Village, Surrey is one of Britain’s most atmospheric selling exhibitions with on average 700 pieces of outdoor sculpture along two miles of trail, set within 10 acres of picturesque woodland and wildlife inhabited water gardens fed by two natural streams. There is also an indoor gallery space placed in the centre of the gardens showcasing a further selection of interior sculptures and wall-hung artworks. In total there are examples of work from over 300 artists, from upcoming British sculptors to established internationals. Behind it all is local artist and businessman Eddie Powell, together with sons Charlie, Oscar and old friend Nicholas Ruffe have created this eclectic curation of 20th Century, Modern and Contemporary sculpture and began the build back in 2001. He continues to invest, diversify and develop the exhibition with ever-changing exhibits, artists and landscaping projects with hundreds of commissions, trees and plants being introduced every year as pieces are bought and seasons turn.

Christmas is coming…
“C
hristmas in Switzerland is magical,” says Chris Bachmann, owner of Bachmanns Patisserie. “In December, every town and village twinkles with thousands of Christmas lights, and the traditional Christmas specialities, scent of cinnamon, ginger and mulled wine fill the air. At Bachmanns, we bring a little taste of a Swiss Christmas to England.” Preparing for Christmas starts at the end of September, when the fruit for the Christmas cakes, puddings and mince pies is macerated, soaked in Bachmanns’ trademark mix of liquors and fruit juice. Throughout November, the brigade of pastry chefs at both Thames Ditton and Weybridge patisseries begin baking and prepping the traditional gingerbread houses, Lebkuchenhaus. Chewy and delicious, each are individually hand crafted and decorated. Bachmanns’ chocolatiers are busy creating chocolate Christmas puddings, Santas, adorable snowmen and Christmas Rocher trees, using their finest signature couverture chocolate. Look out for the extremely cute Christmas pudding chocolate truffles, new for this year, made with a ganache flavoured with classic mulled Christmas spices - it’s as if Christmas has been crystallised into one gorgeous mouthful! “As soon as we open in December, queues begin forming for our mince pies, which are freshly baked, and with customers buying gifts or placing orders for Christmas,” says Chris. “It’s our busiest time of year and, as everything is handmade on the premises, our chefs are hard at work to keep up with demand, but we only get to make these products at Christmas, so that makes it magical for us, too.”

TRADITIONAL BUTCHERY WITH A MODERN TWIST
I
n the highly sought after village of Oxshott sits a very traditional butchers shop, sadly becoming increasingly rare these days. We spoke with Simon Taylor, patron butcher of Surrey Hills Butchers, to see why his butchers is going from strength to strength. “We pride ourselves on being traditional as well as moving with the times. I have learnt from some very traditional butchers and I use these teachings and then apply forward- thinking to create twists on classics”. Simon says that not only do they still offer classic cuts for the classic cook but they are willing to do more of the leg work in almost creating ready meals. “We make a lot of ready to go products these days like stir-fry and handmade chicken kievs ready to cook”. Simon has worked in traditional butcher shops since the age of thirteen meaning he has seen the trade move for over twenty years and has been running his own for the past four. “Butcher shop numbers do worry me as they have been in decline for decades, and all we can do really is keep trying to educate people that it is far more natural to buy what you can actually see”. Simon went on to say our “disconnection” from meat was the real cause of the horse-meat scandal, not being able to see or trust what is happening behind closed doors. He believes in old school face to face transactions where people can ask questions and more importantly see what is happening to their food. He goes on to explain “Here at Surrey Hills Butchers we always try to use as much local produce as we can. We do of course have standards, we like to meet these standards and keep the produce local wherever possible. It is always a pleasure dealing with farmers and their families as well as market men. We mix with the sort of people who care about their livestock; from field to plate starts very much with the farmer. Every step of our food’s journey is important, from how the animal is fed to how it is slaughtered. Not to mention how it is butchered and cooked!”

The newest battle for Surrey Hills Butchers is the new research into cancer-causing preservatives. Even though this has been thought to be the case for a long time, The World Health Organisation now say there is a direct link between processed meats and cancer. He says “I think we do need to be careful with how this is worded and how we explain processed meat… I think new guide lines and clearer information need to be given out to butchers and alike as quickly as possible”. Although Simon claims to be no scientist himself I wonder if he had seen this coming telling me that at Surrey Hills Butchers they have been making a range of preservative free sausages and burgers for a long time. I certainly would not be surprised if he sees a big uptake in those. “This all goes back to being open again, having that relationship with our customers, we can actually talk to each other and look at the options available to them”. In speaking with Simon on these issues I feel he is indeed very traditional yet also young enough to move with modern times and give advice. I don’t think this latest test will stop him moving forward. To end our chat I asked him what the future holds for Surrey Hills Butchers. “Although I have done this for a long time I know the world of food moves daily. I will always go forward being open and ready to be reeducated”.

Giggling Squid NOW OPEN IN ESHER
T
he growing Giggling Squid family of Thai restaurants opened in Esher last month. Located at 58 High Street on the former Carluccio’s site, this is the family-run group’s third site in Surrey – and its first inside the M25. Following a £100,000 refit the 120 cover restaurant has created around 20 jobs. The company will create more jobs in Surrey when it establishes a group headquarters in Guildford, where it opened a branch in August, later this year. The company will recruit a financial director and finance team, an area manager, executive and development chefs plus posts in human resources, training and marketing. The first Surrey Giggling Squid was opened in Reigate in July 2013 Esher is at the centre of the Elmbridge Borough of Surrey, which, according to reports, pays more income tax than the whole of Scotland and the North of England combined. “Despite the well-heeled customer base, we felt the area really lacked for good places to eat,” said Pranee Laurillard who co owns the restaurant group with her husband Andrew, and added, “We lived a few miles down the road in Oxshott for a couple of years and usually ended up in Wimbledon when we wanted something decent.” The Laurillards have since moved to Merrow, on the outskirts of Guildford. Andrew runs the property management, marketing and financial side of things, while Pranee who left her native Thailand to take her a masters degree, takes care of restaurant design, operations and staff management. Giggling Squid opened in Guildford in August. Andrew is currently negotiating on three more sites in the county. These will be larger than existing branches; such is the demand for their food. The people of Surrey have really taken to the Giggling Squid brand of authentic, rustic Thai food, to the extent that the restaurants are busy for lunch and dinner services throughout the week. Only a hopeless optimist would try to secure a table at a weekend without pre booking. The food, prepared on site from scratch by skilled chefs, using fresh ingredients is especially popular with health conscious ‘yummy’ mummies’ and ‘ladies who lunch’. The restaurants also benefit from the vibrant local economy and frequented at lunch time by high numbers of office

workers who work nearby, rather than having to rely on the evening trade of commuters. Questioned as why she feels Surrey, apart from the occasional Michelin star and some decent gastro pubs, is punching below its weight in culinary terms, Pranee Laurillard cites several reasons. “The high rents don’t help nor does the close proximity to the capital – talented young chefs want to make a name for themselves in London. “And despite the best efforts of some artisan producers and farmers’ markets – perhaps Surrey does not have a strong food identity with specific produce, in the same way that, say, Kent or Cornwall have,” she said. However, the Laurillards feel that the local restaurant scene is changing fast. Speaking to industry analysts, commercial estate agents, the trade press and other restaurateurs – it transpires there are number of big names running the rule over the area. Giggling Squid, it is believed, is at the vanguard of on influx of higher end restaurants that are coming to Guildford over the next few years.

Evaluation of chronic cough in children Dr Sunila Jog – Consultant Paediatrician
C
ough in children is common and is usually treated very well by patient’s general practitioner. However there are subgroups of children who develop chronic cough (daily cough that lasts longer than 4 weeks) and they warrant further assessment. Chronic cough in children can be troublesome and causes significant anxiety to parents. Persistent cough in children could be due variety of reasons. Viral infections and asthma are common causes although other pulmonary and non-pulmonary causes need to be excluded. A detailed clinical history is of key importance when evaluating a child with chronic cough. The history should establish the severity, duration and type of cough (dry, moist, barking etc). History taking should focus on diurnal variability, fever, rhinitis, choking, possible foreign body aspiration, vomiting, sputum production, risk of contact with tuberculosis, parental smoking and possible allergies and atopy. Relevant physical sign include faltering growth, finger nail clubbing, nasal polyps, chest wall deformity, Harrison sulcus, abnormal auscultatory findings and eczema. Management of cough is etiologically based. Failure to thrive, finger nail clubbing or persistent respiratory crackles on auscultation are reason for concern and these patients warrant specialist input and further investigations which include sweat test,
immunoglobulin profile and CT chest etc. My interest lies in this sub-group of children who need careful and systematic evaluation. I offer a comprehensive Paediatric out-patient clinic assessment for children with respiratory problems at Spire Clare Park Hospital, Farnham, GU10 5XX.

Why property owners should choose

I
f and when replacing inefficient, outdated or inefficient existing windows, it makes sense, given the ever rising costs of electricity and gas, to choose the most affordable thermally efficient replacement windows. Technological advances in the double glazing industry over the last decade have caused the first and second generations of replacement double glazing (which at the time was a massive improvement on single glazing) to be superceded by “thermally broken” energy saving efficient windows, that meant far better energy ratings were achieved. Window Energy Ratings (or WER’s) were introduced by the Government many years ago now to help consumers

know how thermally efficient any particular combination of frame, gaskets and glass sealed units were. Back on 1st October 2010, the Building Regulations changed so that from then on double glazing installers, suppliers and home owners had a legal responsibility if replacing windows, to replace them with either an independently tested “C” rated, “B” rated or “A” rated window, with until fairly recently, an “A” being the highest rating available. This legislation brought about a sea change in the double glazing industry, whereby it had to suddenly scrap any outdated non-thermally broken window products for higher quality, better designed, more expensive, thermally
broken products, be the window frames made out of aluminium, timber or UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride). The resultant improved living environment and financial savings on energy bills for property owners has led to much of the UK housing stock being better insulated, so much so that home owners looking to sell their properties with older outdated double or single glazing are severely disadvantaged, or at the very least not able to achieve the sale price they had hoped for. For double glazing manufacturers to achieve a decent window energy rating they need a frame that is thermally broken (i.e. where the outer pane and inner pane are separated, so that the cold on the outside cannot interfere with the warmth on the inside) and a high specification sealed unit with a warm edge spacer bar separating the inner and outer glass panes which is filled with an inert gas like Argon, which not only insulates, it helps with sound reduction too. Recent technological advances now enable certain UPVC products to obtain even greater energy ratings than “A”. Some companies use triple glazing to achieve better than an “A” rating, whereas others have opted to improve their double glazed frames, making them more robust as well as more thermally efficient in the process.
Triple glazing sealed units costs more than double glazed sealed units simply because there are two warm edge spacer bars, rather than one, and three panes of glass rather than two. This means triple glazed units cost more to replace if they break down or crack than double glazed units, a factor worth noting if choosing between these two options. As it is now possible to have professionally fitted bespoke A+ energy rated double glazed windows for far less than A+ or A++ triple glazing, it makes better financial sense to invest in double glazed A+ windows. If the most thermally efficient windows on the planet are not well fitted, they won’t perform, so it is important to select an experienced installer you can trust to do a professional job.
