ANNOUNCES THE OPENING OF THE BERKELEY BAR & TERRACE
T
he Berkeley has revealed a new addition to the landmark five star hotel, with the opening of The Berkeley Bar & Terrace. This is the second bar at the hotel, joining the legendary Blue Bar which opened in 2000. With a rich design story conceived by Irish interior designer Bryan O’Sullivan, The Berkeley Bar offers a finely curated menu of exemplary rare wines, champagne and dark spirits. The bar is intimate and refined, with a sense of old world glamour, with its own terrace for alfresco gatherings, and The Snug for private parties.
“I am honoured to have been asked to create this very special space for The Berkeley, famous for creating iconic bars” The Snug has been designed for more secluded occasions, set away from the main bar and seating up to nine guests. It features a spectacular mural, painted by New York-based artist TM Davy, in a concept developed together with Bryan O’Sullivan. Davy was inspired by original snug spaces in public houses, usually reserved for women and their secret discussions, when men and women did not mix socially. The mural depicts gazing female faces with mysterious and knowing expressions, all connected with rhythmic lines to portray the connection and trusted relationships between them. With its own sound system and call-for-service button, The Snug provides visitors with their own bespoke space. The Berkeley Bar & Terrace, will be a destination for wine connoisseurs and guests looking for expert, intuitive service. Exquisite wine – spanning a wide range of grape varieties and countries – plus exclusive champagne, whisky, cognac, rums and more make up the menu, from both under the 18 AUGUST 2019
radar producers such as Japanese whisky maker Ichiro, tequila producer Fortaleza, rum maker Trois Rivières and notable names such as Sassicaia and Macallan. A capsule menu of nine old time and modern classic cocktails such as the Sazerac and the Corpse Reviver are also being served. To mark the opening, The Berkeley team worked with Scottish whisky producers Gordon and MacPhail on the creation of a rare whisky from 1972, the year the hotel opened. There are only two bottles of this unique spirit sourced. The menu includes small plates with dishes such as Cornish crab and lobster beignets, Iberico ham toast with manchego, apricot and salsa verde, and camembert chicken tulips, alongside classic caviar and oyster dishes. The bar is also home to an edit of fine cigars. Bryan O’Sullivan said “I am honoured to have been asked to create this very special space for The Berkeley, famous for creating iconic bars. The rich history of the building provided a spring board of inspiration for what we hope is a timeless yet contemporary new edition to this London landmark. We are delighted to introduce The Berkeley Bar to our guests and, of course, our local community,” says Knut Wylde, General Manager of The Berkeley. “The hotel continues to contribute to the vibrant London bar scene with this opening which will complement our much-loved Blue Bar, and add something extra special to the hotel.”

50 YEARS OF TRAMP
London’s most iconic private members club, TRAMP is celebrating 50 years at the pinnacle of the nightlife industry

O
pened in December 1969, the Jermyn Street club has welcomed a who’s who of A-list celebrities through its unassuming doors and into the 300-capacity basement of bacchanalia, below. Original members included Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Roger Moore, Sir Michael Caine and sisters Joan and Jackie Collins, but the club quickly became a magnet for movie stars, musicians and even royalty, and before long, Tramp became a byword for sophisticated debauchery. During the 1970s it wasn’t uncommon to see George Best on the dance floor while Sir Matt Busby frantically called the club’s front desk, trying to locate his absent star player; Marlon Brando holding court in the restaurant over a glass of scotch and Amaretto; and Frank Sinatra relaxing on his favourite seat in the lounge area, where guests would fall over themselves at the sight of Ol’ Blue Eyes as they emerged from the adjacent women’s toilets. Sir Rod Stewart once said of the club: “I remember coming out of Tramp when I used to play Sunday morning football and I’d get home at about four or five in the morning and I’d get up about three hours later for an 11 o’clock kick off smelling of booze!” The club’s original decor has been lovingly preserved, with beautiful, 17th Century oak panelling throughout and chandeliers from the Rothschild Palace hanging from the ceilings - save for one, memorable absence, where legendary The Who drummer, Keith Moon leapt from his table and brought the chandelier crashing to the floor before being escorted from the club screaming: “You can’t ban me from Tramp! Where else will I go?”
“During the 1970s it wasn’t uncommon to see George Best on the dance floor while Sir Matt Busby frantically called the club’s front desk, trying to locate his absent star player”
He was welcomed back 24 hours later, after apologising profusely and paying for the damage. But while celebrity anecdotes undoubtedly helped to build interest in this mysteriously secretive club on the border of St. James’s and Mayfair, it has flourished through five decades thanks to its core principles: To offer luxurious service and fine dining in a relaxed and sociable environment; and to treat every member as a VIP. General Manager, David Fleming, says: “Tramp is more than just a members club. It is an intimate space with a limited membership and we pride ourselves on being able to welcome each and every guest by name, remember their favourite drink and where they like to sit in the restaurant or bar. “The club was built on quiet word-of-mouth, with our details being passed on by members on film sets, in business meetings and between bands, and over the years it has almost become a ‘password’ around the world; members frequently tell me how they’ve been to a far flung place and been given the best table in a restaurant because the owner is also a member of Tramp. “We talk about our membership as a family and in many cases, they really are - we have original members whose children and even grandchildren have grown up and joined the club and three generations can use it together. “If these walls could talk, they’d have a lot of stories to tell; but of course, they wouldn’t say a thing - because that’s the Tramp way.” The club launched its 50th anniversary celebrations with a star-studded party in May, attended by Sir Rod Stewart, Sir Michael Caine, Dame Joan Collins, Bill Wyman, Nathalie Dormer, Mark Ronson and many more, and members will enjoy further special events throughout the rest of the year. Prospective members may apply via the club’s website at www.tramp.co.uk/memberships. But remember: What happens in Tramp, stays in Tramp. AUGUST 2019 23

EPICUREAN DELIGHT: THE CHAMPAGNE CHEST By Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
T
he House of Rolls-Royce is delighted to present the Champagne Chest, the latest addition to the Rolls-Royce accessory portfolio. Rich in the understanding of true luxury and epicurean pleasure, the RollsRoyce Bespoke Design Collective envisioned an accoutrement intended to delight, suitable for the most extravagant of environments from a superyacht to the terrace of a private residence. The Champagne Chest is distinguishably RollsRoyce, embodying the meticulous attention-to-detail and commitment to remarkable handcraftsmanship, characteristic of the marque. The chassis, made from machined aluminium and carbon fibre, is swathed in Natural Grain black leather embossed with the enigmatic Spirit of Ecstasy and flanked by Tudor Oak wood, materials found in the marque’s motor cars. At the touch of a button a sense of theatre ensues as the case opens to reveal the finery of a perfectly appointed Champagne set for four guests. The exterior lid metamorphoses into a beautiful serving tray made of Tudor Oak wood with a lasercut stainless steel inlay. Four cotton napkins with finely embroidered ‘RR’ monograms are discreetly hidden under the lacquered Tudor Oak table. The Chest is illuminated from the central bay, presenting four hand-blown crystal champagne flutes arranged to evoke memories of a V12 engine. The glass of each is masterfully joined by a polished aluminium base, etched with the ‘RR’ monogram. The sides of the Chest automatically deploy, revealing two hammocks adorned in ‘Hotspur Red’ Rolls-Royce leather to cradle one’s preferred ensemble of either champagne, caviar or canapés. Thermal Champagne Coolers made from black anodised aluminium and carbon fibre each proudly bear the ‘RR’ emblem, ensure the champagne is maintained at the optimum temperature. A caviar configuration is available, whereby two thermal caviar caissons, each accommodating a 30g tin, are complemented by two blini caissons

Different themed walks also take place at 2.30pm on a Tuesday and these include Made in Guildford, looking at Guildford’s manufacturing history; Hidden Guildford, revealing details and facts that you’ve probably looked at or walked passed 100 times but never noticed!: Georgian Guildford and Medieval Guildford, taking in the buildings in town that still exist and those that have gone. FUNDING YOUR DIVORCE
T
he costs of funding a divorce and financial proceedings can be an important factor in deciding how to progress a matter. It can often be the case that funds aren’t available to pay solicitor’s bills as they are raised, which may see the process stall. There are several companies now offering litigation loans to help pay legal costs on the understanding that the loan is repaid from liquid matrimonial assets once the matter is settled and a court order made. This can offer a real solution to a client struggling to fund a case.
How funding can help While a loan can help the cash flow problem, it also puts the parties on an equal footing, able to progress matters to a conclusion and reach a fair settlement. When there is an imbalance of financial fire power, one party may be pressured into accepting an offer that may not be fair to them, and the courts are quick to recognise such loans as a necessity and a valid liability. The amount to borrow plus the interest needs to be considered in the context of what the party if hoping to achieve through the process. If it is the case that parties are £150,000 apart, and a party has been advised that their claim is closer to that which the judge may make at the end of litigation, the cost of borrowing can be seen as a practical and affordable means to an end, enabling the matter to progress to a conclusion. As a solicitor it’s important to advise your client on the best chance of achieving the most favourable settlement spending as little as possible and with the least delay. That may mean taking the matter to court where the opposing party is maintaining an unrealistic position, and this is where litigation funding can help.
Choose the right funding There are an increasing number of companies offering litigation loans. The key in choosing the right one is to find a funder who is able to make quick lending decisions to help strategy and reduce 32 AUGUST 2019
stress to the client. A lender with a simple and user-friendly application process will save time and therefore be cost efficient for the client. Also a personalised service can reduce stress and improve the experience for all parties. It also helps if the lender has experience of family law, and is aware of the possible outcomes and strength of a client’s case. This will inevitably mean a more targeted, quicker, and more efficient service.
In conclusion The benefits of taking out a litigation loan when finances are tight can be summarised as follows:A litigation loan can often be cheaper than engaging in fruitless correspondence with the side that can afford the fees, particularly where court hearings will see the matter more quickly. It helps the financially disadvantaged party achieve equality of negotiating power, removes uncertainty and anxiety, and sees the matter move to a conclusion more speedily At Rose & Rose Solicitors, in many cases, litigation funding is considered as part of the overall strategy of a case from the outset. Funding can pay for itself by significantly lowering legal fees and increasing the chance of a positive settlement outcome for the client. Birthday Celebrations in Esher start offering select dinner menu items as specials during lunchtime. This will most certainly add an interesting new offering to what is already on the lunch menu everyday. Think really creative and original salads, seasonal pastas, great sandwiches, the afore mentioned Burger as well as a 100% plant based Vegan Burger! Seven Bluebirds is open Tuesday through Sunday for Breakfast, Bunch, Dinner and Brunch on the weekends, including Freeflow Prosecco. Reservations highly recommended for Dinner and Brunch. ummer is here and, along with the weather, the culinary scene in Esher is hotting up. The standout restaurant for us though is Seven Bluebirds, who are celebrating their 1st birthday and continue to deliver consistently excellent food and service. Their ethos since opening has been to deliver fresh, well cooked food made from scratch, served in a comfortable environment with attentive, but not overbearing service. Their Dinner menu still changes seasonally, with a few tweaks here and there mid season and currently features, amongst many other things, a house smoked and grilled pork chop with pineapple and jalapeño salsa. Also a fantastic starter is the Harissa Cream Cheese stuffed and Tempura battered Courgette flower. On the dessert front, the one that caught our attention, and delivered a truly theatrical piece of culinary craftsmanship, was their “Campfire S’mores”. Truly a sensory masterpiece that comes to the table still smoking and really did make one feel that you were sitting around a campfire toasting marshmallows. Their weekend brunch menu is really quite unique for the area with Chicken & Waffles featuring high up on the “must have” list as well as their very special burger, made in house of course, and so popular that they are considering making it available on Deliveroo! Our favorite though has to be the Bluebird Benny, their riff on Eggs Benedict which substitutes the ham for smashed avocado and fried halloumi. Thankfully its not only on the weekend brunch menu, but also on the breakfast menu, which is served all day Tuesday to Sunday. For those that can’t always make it out to Seven Bluebirds for dinner, we’re told that they will

BRAVE SURREY SPIRITS SET OFF FOR MONGOLIA BACKED BY SILENT POOL GIN AND GASP
A
Surrey adventurer in a VW Polo resplendent in Silent Pool Gin colours left the distillery at Albury on Friday July 19 for the start of the Mongol Rally - 10,000 miles of chaos across mountains, deserts and steppe on roads ranging from bad to impassable. John Griffiths’ spirit of adventure was a perfect match for the Albury distillery’s new brand positioning “for the spirited”. They are sponsoring John to take the car, provided by GASP Motor Project and overhauled by its young mechanics, to Russian Mongolia to raise funds for Cool Climate and Bowel Cancer UK. John said it was definitely the prettiest car in the race! He cut his teeth organising extreme activities at university and just loves doing adventures around the world. He’s already tackled Antarctica and the Himalayas! The first motoring challenge was to drive to the official starting point of the rally in Prague in on July 21. The first leg then took them to Istanbul by July 29. When John said he needed to find a suitable vehicle for the race, Silent Pool Gin Director Ian McCulloch went straight across the A25 from the Silent Pool to the GASP workshop in Albury Sandpit. Barrie Birchmore, GASP workshop manager, said: “Ian McCulloch contacted me and we offered them our VW Polo, which Peter Simpson, one of our volunteers, had given to GASP for the students to take apart and put back together. It was just right for the rally. “We went through the car to see what was wrong 36 AUGUST 2019
and sorted out problems with the drive shaft and got the car through its MOT before taking it to Sustainaprint at Dunsfold to be wrapped in Silent Pool Gin colours.” Darren Macaskill, Silent Pool Gin Head of Marketing, said the expedition fitted perfectly with the brand’s new positioning “For the Spirited”. ‘For the Spirited’ is about following your own path, embracing life whole-heartedly and living for the very best things it has to offer. John and his team fit the ’spirited’ brief to a tee and we’re delighted to be able to help their dream become a reality and in doing so support two wonderful charities; Cool Climate and Bowel Cancer UK’. The distillery has also agreed with Albury Estate to plant hundreds of trees to offset the VW’s carbon footprint. “I’m used to leading things” said John Griffiths, “I’m confident we will make it to Mongolia as I have a team of friends around and there is very little ‘quit’ in me. One of the most rewarding aspects of an expedition of this nature is working with other people and watching them grow through the journey. Organisations like GASP help people develop.” The GASP Motor Project is a charity that helps young people aged 14 - 19 years learn basic motor mechanics and practical engineering skills. In doing so the charity also aims to help young people change behaviours and supports them in making a successful transition to adult life. Sponsors include John’s company Kisters, and Hyquest.

Fine Art of Conservation Revealed at Fetcham Park Heritage Open Day

onservator and restorer of fine oil paintings, Paul Tsangari, is helping to preserve a slice of 300-year-old history at Surrey’s ‘best-kept secret’ Fetcham Park. His recent work on the spectacular Louis Laguerre murals, originally painted in the early 1700s, will be revealed as part of Heritage Open Days on 20th September with a guided tour by Paul, followed by a lecture on the history of the House by historian Vivien White. Laguerre, whose work can also be seen at Chatsworth House and Blenheim Palace, grew up in the Royal household of his godfather Louis XIV in Versailles. He spent his adult life in England painting murals at the grandest houses of the day. At Fetcham Park, he worked alongside the King’s architect William Talman and Royal gardener and garden designer George London to create a muchadmired country residence which continues to captivate visitors to this day. With over three decades of experience, Paul Tsangari has a vast knowledge of oil painting restoration and conservation from the 15th to the

20th-century. Several paintings he has conserved and restored now hang on permanent display at the Royal Academy, London. Following extensive testing of the murals at Fetcham Park, gentle cleansing of the surface revealed stunning original colours which are far closer to the image Louis Laguerre intended us to view. While accustomed to conserving fine oil paintings on a far smaller scale, the conservation at Fetcham Park was an exciting challenge for Paul Tsangari, he says: “It’s an honour to work on a unique project like this and to be involved in helping to preserve this work of art for future generations to enjoy.” Kate Ainsworth, house manager at Fetcham Park, comments: “The Laguerre murals are an important part of not only Fetcham Park’s history but the history of art in this country. The recent work carried out by Paul required exceptional care and meticulous attention to detail in the midst of a working building. The result is magnificent.” “Fetcham Park - Discover the history and art behind Surrey’s ‘best-kept’ secret” is on Friday 20th September from 6pm – 9pm. Step into the most exciting school in England “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised”
A
lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for. Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eyecatching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time 42 AUGUST 2019
to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.” Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.” Who could ask for anything more?

Christie’s presents Banksy this September and sold. Kissing Coppers (2004) was taken from the wall of a Brighton pub and sold for $575,000 in Miami in 2014. Banksy no longer sells photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti, but his public “installations” are regularly resold or auctioned. A small number of Banksy’s works are officially, nonpublicly, sold through Pest Control. There exists a cult-like following for the artist, heightened by the ambiguity of his identity. . Banksy is regarded as a British cultural icon, with young adults from abroad naming the artist among a group of people that they most associate with UK culture, alongside William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth II, David Beckham, The Beatles, J. The source image of the work is a photograph of the record-breaking sale of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers at Christie’s in 1987, with Van Gogh’s canvas replaced by Banksy’s text. The sale is led by an extremely rare artist’s proof of Girl with Balloon (Gold). But who is Banksy? An anonymous England-based street artist, political activist, and film director, active since the 1990s. His name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. His works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. His work started appearing in London around 2004. with Brendan Murphy, exhibiting at Maddox Gallery

rendan Murphy is a world-renowned artist who continues to push the walls of creativity beyond the confines of the canvas. Consistently experimenting with sculpture, concept pieces, and a wide range of different materials and tools, Murphy’s talent lies in his ability in balancing these various elements of exploration against the backdrop of his greatest inspirations; formulas, equations, relationships and the spectrum of human emotion. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of man landing on the moon, Murphy’s Boonji Spaceman series examines the magic of exploration both in a personal and spatial sense. The spaceman, according to Murphy, is the perfect embodiment of the human desire to look ahead and venture beyond boundaries; encouraging viewers to embrace the unknown and be present in the moment – which in Murphy’s eyes is the purest form of existence.
‘what is the formula for falling in love?’ How do we arrive at these feelings? That’s what I’m trying to work out in my art. Which artists have influenced you? Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jackson Pollock, my friend Eric Fischl, Willem De Kooning, Picasso. You have recently just launched your own app Boonji – does technology influence your art? I would say my interest in technology is directly related to how technology helps us to communicate. With my app ‘Boonji,’ it allows you to communicate with people in a new way - you choose the emotion you are feeling, and the algorithm will create a one-off formula. The app is specifically designed to help somebody share a feeling. Say you type in the word ‘kindness’ - the algorithm will create a formula equalling kindness and you can edit the formulas until you feel it really suits the person, then you can send it. I feel good that it’s out there for people to use and I think it’s a wonderful extension of my artwork.
“I began experimenting with different materials and formats; learning about art history etc. That’s how it all began” Can you tell us about your journey as an artist? I come from an Irish-Italian family in Boston and if you said you were a painter, that meant you painted homes. I didn’t come from a community where you would say I am going to be an artist so realising that I was a creative person later on in my life was actually a very tough realisation for me to have. When I was young, I was a professional basketball and then after a few years I ended up in New York working as a trader on Wall Street. I was fortunate that I had friends who were very famous painters – Eric Fischl, David Salle and Robert Bleckner. I left finance and essentially got a crash course with them - two or three of the best painters in the world - and from there, I began experimenting with different materials and formats; learning about art history etc. That’s how it all began. Why do you incorporate formulas in your work? I started writing formulas just trying to figure out my own emotions. They also took up a lot of space on the canvas and they had an interesting look to them – they jumped off the background. Now they’re an integral part of my work. The irony of the formulas is we’re all trying to figure out the answer, but they don’t make any sense our feelings, they come and go. The formulas are abstract because there is no real answer. It’s fun trying to figure out ‘what is the formula for infatuation?’ Or

What do you see for your future? I’m constantly experimenting, and I always want to push myself creatively and try new things because I’m a big believer in embracing the unknown. I think we should always try push ourselves forward and take the next step. That’s what my Boonji Spaceman series is all about. People think the sculptures are about space but they’re not - they’re about the step the spacemen are taking. The step into the unknown. I’m not sure what my future holds but I know I’ll keep stepping forward, creating work and continuing to experiment with different materials and technology. www.maddoxgallery.com @maddoxgallery @brendanmurphyart

Outstanding Natural Beauty. This summer at Polesden Lacey, for the first time, we’re offering visitors a backstage pass to the gardens with a variety of tours and talks. Learn the secrets of our talented gardeners, visit parts of the gardens not usually open to visitors and even meet Mrs Greville’s head gardeners from the past. It’s the perfect day out for anyone with an interest in horticulture - whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just getting started. New ‘Unseen Spaces’ garden tours take visitors behind the scenes in the gardens, even visiting the compost areas and greenhouses. These are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12.45pm. Step into the past and meet Mrs Greville’s gardeners to find out what the gardens were like in Mrs Greville’s time and what her gardeners were most passionate about. Costumed interpreters bring these historic characters to life. These talks take place every Wednesday at 2.30pm until August 28. Meet a Polesden Gardener to find out how the talented team at Polesden Lacey keep the gardens looking spectacular and what they’re working on each month. These talks happen at midday on the last Wednesday of each month. Or simply join a daily garden tour at 10.30am, 12.45pm or 2.15pm to enjoy a guided tour around the formal gardens and productive areas at Polesden Lacey.

Retirement Living meets Contemporary Design at Wadswick Green
W
hen thinking of downsizing into a retirement home some might envision a small and dated home where they would struggle to fit in all their belongings and furniture. They may fear having to compromise on style, furnishings and quality fittings in exchange for a gain in convenience and care. Wadswick Green, the lifestyle village for over 60s located in Corsham, Wiltshire, proves that it is possible to combine modern design with the comfort of retirement living. The village’s ‘Almond Close’ offers a choice of 45 brand new one, two and three bedroom apartments, all of which feature a contemporary architecture. The apartments were designed with one concept in mind: easy living. Beautiful floor-to-ceiling dual aspect picture windows create a spacious feel and allow residents to make the most of the beautiful views onto the surrounding countryside. Simple, open plans help to ease mobility in keeping with the needs of over 60s. The kitchens boast innovative and modern features, including moveable units, soft intelligent doors and drawer closers, as well as Silestone worktops for durability. Integrated lighting and the range of appliances by Neff also bring a quality feel to the space. This carries through to the apartments’ bathrooms, which are kitted out with convenient walk-in-showers and luxury taps and fittings. The new homes are also energy efficient thanks to thorough insulation supported by the underfloor heating and modern double-glazed windows with incorporated low solar glazing, providing a particularly cosy home for the cold winter months. Residents are given the choice between two interior design colour themes -walnut or blond oak-, which both create an inviting and comfortable atmosphere. Wadswick Green’s residents can easily assess the amenities of the village within The Pavilion. It boasts a spa with a wide range of treatments, a gym, swimming pool including Jacuzzi, sauna, steam 64 AUGUST 2019
room and hair salon. In addition, Wadswick Green is home to The Greenhouse Coffee Shop and Restaurant, which has proven popular with residents and the Wiltshire community alike. Wiltshire resident Diana Harrison, whose parents moved to Wadswick Green, comments: “Having lived at Wadswick Green for several months now, my parents absolutely love it and say it feels like being on holiday all the time. It truly is a relief for me to see both of them enjoying themselves and knowing that they are part of a friendly community, just down the road from me. It also gives me peace of mind to know that there is care and support available, should my parents ever require this.” Boosting the residents’ wellbeing is also the village’s very own personal trainer and the many fitness classes taking place throughout the week. Residents enjoy a busy social life thanks to Wadswick Green’s events calendar, which is full of activities and day trips. Many hobby groups for walking dancing and reading add to the list of things to do.

A history of the
bikini
The bikini. While it’s a holiday essential now, life hasn’t always been so simple for the humble two-piece. In fact, it’s got quite the history. What started off as the ultimate in scandalous dressing was slowly accepted, at first by Europe and eventually across the pond in the US too, eventually ending up the beachfront fixture that it is today.
I
n 1913, 13 years after women were first allowed to compete in the Olympics, the first two-piece bathing costume was designed in a bid to improve performance. It was basically just a tight vest and shorts, but eyebrows were still raised due to the previously unseen tight fit. During the 1930s and 1940s in Europe, fabric rationing means that women started to wear a split bathing suit. Film stars including Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, and Lana Turner were all wearing the two-piece, and it was seen frequently on American beaches. However, showing the belly button was still unchartered territory! On July 5 1946, the bikini as we know it today was born. Inspired by seeing women in St Tropez rolling up their swimsuits to get a better tan, engineer Louis Réard designed the first bikini. He named his design ‘bikini’ after Bikini Atoll, where post-war testing on the atomic bomb was happening. His reasoning? Réard hoped that his invention would be as explosive as the testing was. It certainly was and initially, no models would wear his design – it was the first garment to ever expose the belly button and this was considered seriously scandalous. The two piece was banned from the 1951 London Miss World Competition as the one-piece still reigned supreme. The bikini was later also banned in Belgium, Italy, Spain and
Australia, and was declared sinful by the Vatican. In 1959, Kirk Douglas was spotted frolicking on the beach in Cannes with actress Bridgette Bardot who had boldly chosen a bikini as her beachwear. Bardot was seen from that moment as part responsible for popularising the bikini. However, America still wasn’t keen and Anne Cole, a US swimsuit designer, said about a Bardot bikini, “It’s nothing more than a G-string. It’s at the razor’s edge of decency.” Also in 1959, the mayor of Benidorm convinced Spain’s General Franco to legalise the bikini to draw more tourists to the town – he agreed and Benidorm joins Cannes as key in popularising the bikini. Marilyn Monroe confirmed the trend, appearing in a bikini in a number of photoshoots during the 1950s. Despite the National Legion of Decency pressuring Hollywood to keep bikinis from being featured in Hollywood movies, bikini history was made in 1962 when Ursela Andress emerged from the sea playing Honey Rider in the James Bond film Dr. No. Also in the 1960s the bikini made it’s Playboy debut but early American bikinis tried to cover up the belly button and when modelled in magazines, the belly button was airbrushed out. Seriously. In 1964, America finally buckled and Sports Illustrated featured Berlin-born fashion model Babette March on the cover wearing a white bikini. For better or for worse, we’ve come a long way since the bathing dress and, for that, most women are thankful. AUGUST 2019 69

Want to tighten your skin, reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines? Dr Peter Forrester now offers the option of combining Profhilo with INTRAcel, our proven and long-established radio-frequency microneedling treatment. Together they are an unbeatable combination. INTRAcel Dr Peter Forrester has been using INTRAcel skin rejuvenation for over 5 years. During this time he has witnessed the introduction of many other non-surgical skintightening treatments. Usually well publicised, celebrity endorsed and very expensive. They are promoted with before and after photographs showing results that are rarely achievable in practice. Dr Forrester continues to be impressed with the results of INTRAcel and believes that it offers a better and more cost effective result than most of the new ‘trendy’ techniques. INTRAcel cleverly combines the two established techniques of micro-needling and radio-frequency (RF) skin tightening. INTRAcel delivers short bursts of RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin. Recovery from an INTRAcel treatment is usually quick; at the end of the treatment the skin will be red like a sunburn sensation for a few hours, this will diminish after 1-2 days. A toned and tightened effect will be immediately noticeable after a treatment but the full effect will develop over the subsequent weeks. There will be improvement after the first treatment, however a course of 3 at 4-6 week intervals is recommended. Following this improvements will continue for up to 6 months as healthy collagen develops.
Profhilo
Profhilo is an exciting and unique rejuvenation product for the face, neck and décolletage, being unlike any other skin treatment on the market. Dr Peter Forrester always looks critically at new treatments and never jumps on the bandwagon of new treatments until he has had time to evaluate the

exaggerated claims made by some manufacturers and occasionally other practitioners. He has regularly used Profhilo since Summer 2017 and hence has had a good opportunity to evaluate its effects. He is now convinced Profhilo is a safe, effective and innovative product. Profhilo is designed to improve skin laxity, texture and lines by stimulating collagen and elastin production. This effect combined with increased
hydration will produce a subtle lifting and tightening effect. Although Profhilo is composed of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) it is not a filler and is aimed at achieving a very different effect from all the currently available HA fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero. It will not add excessive volume and hence there is no risk that a Profhilo treatment will result in an obviously filled or ‘pillow face’ look. It is manufactured by IBSA, a long-established and highly reputable Swiss company and was first launched in Italy in 2015 and subsequently in the UK in January 2016. Since launch there have been an increasing number of positive reviews and opinions in the media. A Profhilo treatment is quick and easy. Just 5 small injections of Profhilo are administered to each side of the face. Discomfort is minimal and other than the possibility for a small bruise there is no downtime. There will be an initial increase in hydration, but the main effects will build over the following weeks. A second treatment must be given 4 weeks later to maximise the beneficial effects.

Holiday Beauty T
aking make-up away when you travel is fraught with risks. Will your beloved Ruby Woo lippie melt in the heat? Will that tube of BB cream explode in your luggage? Will your favourite Huda Beauty highlighter smash and cover everything else in a fine dusting of holographic powder? Plus, when you add it all up, that stuff is heavy, and no one wants to have to pay for excess baggage or - heaven forbid - downsize at the check-in desk. We can’t solve all these conundrums, unfortunately, but one way to take the hassle out of packing for a summer trip is with a make-up palette. With a range of brands now offering customisable trays, you can curate your perfect holiday kit, or choose from the season’s coolest new edits for eyes and cheeks.

The Ultimate Body Transformation,
Caroline Weller
from Life Magazines puts it to the test
Exclusively Created by Lisa Harris Skin Science Cutting edge technology for fat reduction, body sculpting, skin tightening and cellulite reduction say the adverts. It just sounds too good to be true and having tried various expensive fat busting treatments I can’t help being a tad cynical.
L
isa Harris, owner of, Lisa Harris Skin Science, tells me it does indeed work, and my ongoing battle with my over large flabby belly (that I like to blame on the menopause rather than overindulgence) makes me decide to give it a try. I started with a body consultation with Lisa who explained what would happen over the next six weekly treatments. Lisa, who has a clinic in Knightsbridge as well as Weybridge, has over 25 years in the world of beauty and is extremely informative. A few days later I arrive feeling optimistic at the Weybridge Clinic. My first appointment would last about two hours and involve a Detoxing Body Wrap and Non-invasive Cryolipolysis before moving on to my six weekly sessions of Lipofirm Pro, Eleanor would be looking after me and after changing into some rather unflattering paper underwear I settle down for my treatment. DETOXING BODY WRAP Lisa has already explained that it works by breaking down fat cells and aiding the bodying transporting released Triglycerides through the body’s natural waste processes allowing the contents of the fat cell to be naturally eliminated from the body. Being bio active, Detoxing Body Wrap is highly effective when used with technologies such as Cryolipolysis, or Radio Frequency. The wrap solution needs to be activated by heat so I was wrapped up first with polythene, then a foil sheet and lastly a thick blanket. Eleanor then left me to have a rather relaxing power nap! NON-INVASIVE CRYOLIPOLYSIS I’m told the Triglyceride in fat cells can be crystallised when taken to a particularly low temperature. Cryolipolysis uses controlled & advanced cooling technologies to target stubborn pockets of fat selectively and eliminate fat cells through a gradual process. The treatment wasn’t painful although my skin felt a little tender afterwards. Apparently it can take up to 2 months to see the full result however some clients begin to see results after 2 weeks.
76 AUGUST 2019
LIPOFIRM PRO Arriving at the clinic for my first Lipofirm Pro treatment my stomach definitely feels less bloated after my Wrap and Cryo session. Lisa strongly recommends following Cryolipolysis with Lipofirm PRO as it further reduces the fat cells, tightens the skin and tones the muscles resulting in even better results. After Eleanor applies a conducting gel to my stomach area the process begins using a combination of radio frequency technology and muscle activation to break down and disperse fat and cellulite whilst also firming the skin. The machine has an attachment that looks rather like shower head and has metal roller balls which make contact with your skin, and then delivers pulses as it is constantly moved around the area being worked on. A rather strange sensation, a bit like tiny rubber bands pinging onto the skin. I didn’t find it painful but it sometimes got a little warm. My treatment lasted about 30 minutes and after I got used to the sensation I found it quite relaxing. Lipofirm Pro works on a Triple Action Protocol; Release, Remove and Reshape. For the scientific side of things please contact Lisa and her team or see their website.
“Lisa strongly recommends following Cryolipolysis with Lipofirm PRO”
6 WEEKS LATER As the weeks went by I noticed my clothes were looser but I didn’t think I really looked any different, this is because the changes happen gradually. However, when Eleanor presented me with the photos she had taken at the beginning of my treatment and those at the end, bearing in mind I had not altered my eating and drinking habits, or participated in any additional exercise during my course, (despite this being recommended) the treatment has most definitely made difference and I’m delighted! It has even spurred me on to exercise and eat more healthily and even cut down the wine!

The informal vibe, that reinvents the way awards are done, saw all 17 categories awarded in less than one hour, leaving more time for networking among salon owners, sponsors, and representatives from ivy league hair brands including TIGI, Schwarzkopf Professional and Paul Mitchell. 78 AUGUST 2019
Speaking after the event, Joanne said: “Salon Business Awards are growing year on year and the standard of entries continues to rise, even when we think that’s not possible. The hair industry is filled with such entrepreneurial spirit, dedication and hard work, and it is events such as this that drive that message home. Well done to all who entered with a special congratulations to the winners.”
“What an unforgettable evening. Moments before it was announced at the ceremony that we’d won the Ultimate Large Salon award, my wife was on the phone telling me that she’d gone into labour with our first baby! I immediately dashed off to join her and en route got the call that we’d won! 10 hours later our beautiful baby daughter Amelia Liora was born. So I’m feeling very proud of my wonderful family, and my award-winning Academy family, it’s a night none of us will ever forget!!” – Salv Mulé Salon Director, Academy Salons.

Curves & Circular Designs Arching their way across furniture and accessories and even making a bullseye for our walls, if it’s round it’s hot in this Spiced Curve trend from Oak Furnitureland
C
ocooning curves and circular designs are creating more than a ripple in interiors right now. To turn up the heat on the comfort factor, Oak Furnitureland has linked curves with another top interiors colour story, rich spices, which adds depth to the Summer’s earthy terracotta tones. Influenced by Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2019, Spiced Honey, it’s plundered a souk-inspired palette to give the contours of this scheme optimistic hits of paprika, saffron and turmeric. Together, this blend of warming shade and voluptuous shapes provides just the kind of cosiness

our homes are looking for this Autumn/Winter. If you prefer a darker palette, try layering a backdrop of deep, rich burgundy to this scheme its warm red undertones will work wonderfully with lighter calamines and terracottas. The golden oak on the Bevel king size bed and the honey hues of the Hercules bedside table take the temperature up a notch or two in the bedroom. The Evie footstool complements the linens and the coral and rose tones on the walls while the Novaro lamp and wall mirror in rustic oak ensure the room continues to revolve around a circular theme. “If you’re after additional storage for your bedroom and want an alternative to a more traditional blanket box, a storage footstool can make a comfy addition to your scheme.” The smooth curves and solid oak grain of Oak Furnitureland’s Pedestal round dining table and Loop dining chairs are the central feature in this room and bring softness to the space. From a practical point of view, the pedestal base gives you flexibility in how you arrange the seating which is great in a more compact space. When you’re ready to clear the table you can store crockery and glassware in the solid oak Hercules display cabinet which is finished in a rustic wax to emphasise the beautiful grain. “Low bookcases and units like this Bevel small bookcase or Hercules TV cabinet can be a great way to sneak in extra storage next to any half-height or partition walls where a tall piece might feel cumbersome.” With a mid-century feel, furniture edges in this trend are tapered or rounded and upholstery is generously padded for a sink-in look. The Evie corner sofa envelopes with its generous seat while lamps, vases and other accessories all showcase equally curvaceous silhouettes. www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk

barely big enough for the children’s toys and with a similar limited shelf life! If you really want to give your children a playhouse or tree house that lasts their whole childhood, bespoke wooden buildings are ideal. Bespoke treehouses are a big trend in many gardens; with elaborate designs built high up on stilts, within and around branches. They can take on many different shapes sizes, colours and themes, too, and feature a number of cute accessories and fun activities to keep kids entertained throughout the summer! And you don’t need a tree to have a tree house. It can be built in the right location for you. The areas surrounding your tree house could be landscaped with shrubs, trees or a lawn - whatever is needed to enhance the appearance of your treehouse. Your children’s safety is of paramount importance. The construction process of a treehouse can be demanding - not kids’ stuff at all; requiring a great deal of planning and ensuring European safety standards are met. Approach specialist tree house companies and get recommendations from friends. It is crucial that you receive professional advice and guidance, with construction and installation done by experts to keep your child safe. Provide them with a fantasy hideaway in natural surroundings by making a part of the garden their own. www.cheekymonkeytreehouses.com

Game of thrones… the luxury version Game of Thrones fans will never forget the iron chair, but that particular seat of swords was never designed for comfort…
F
ortunately, for those seeking softness and luxury while seated, high-quality furniture and home accessories brand La Residence Interiors has added a new throne-like armchair to its collection along with two smaller contemporary-style armchairs to fit a variety of spaces. The three stunning styles come in a range of sizes: there’s the petite and curvy Annabelle, the more ample, more masculine-looking Arthur and the grand oversized Aston, which is the luxury furniture and home accessories brand’s largest, most throne-like armchair to date. Founders of Surrey-based La Residence Interiors, Dan and Sarah Cook, wanted to complement their best-selling collection of classic French-style armchairs by adding three newcomers with simple classic lines but a slightly more contemporary feel and minimalistic nail-head trim. “The Annabelle chair has attractive curves and detailing, such as the buttoning on the seat pad, as well as our trademark quality weathered oak finish on the legs. Its petite size makes it ideal for a bedroom or small space,” explained Dan. “The Arthur is more generous in size, more masculine and less fussy, with straighter lines and no buttoning. It does have the same nail-head trim, which adds contemporary detail,” he added. Sarah sees the Aston as adding definite ‘wow factor’ to the range. “This is a real statement chair. It’s almost throne-like. It has a high winged back and huge seat that could just about fit two – not

that you would want to share it! The chair has a very solid look with its weathered oak finish and crossbar between the legs and we added a separate cushion for extra comfort.
