Banstead Summer Foraging Course There are a huge variety of edible plants in the south east!

We will meet in Woodmansterne at the Woodman Pub at 12pm.

The beautiful Surrey Hills While the country is basking in uninterrupted sunshine for the past few weeks, the first question that most of our visitors ask is how are the vines coping?

H

ere at Denbies Estate the vineyard is in full bloom, with the vines soaking up the glorious summer sunshine.

Flowering has now finished and we have fruit set and good pollination throughout, with our newly-planted young vines growing nicely. The team are working hard to ensure that we make the most of these optimum conditions and things are looking promising for a lovely harvest. Reports from all over the ‘English wine country’ echo our sentiments and this year is certainly looking to be unprecedented in both quality and quantity.

The vineyard with its 7 miles of public footpath trails and close proximity to Box Hill is perfect for rambling, running and dog walking. Denbies also offers daily vineyard tours which take visitors to the highest point of the vineyard and with spectacular far reaching views, cameras are definitely recommended.

The late summer/autumn is the ideal time of year to visit the vineyard. The vines are almost at their optimum point and the green vines are laden with fruit ready for harvest in late September/ October.

Denbies Bacchus Marathon and half Marathon is one of the highlights of the pre-harvest season.

Now in its 9th ‘vintage’, anyone can get involved, as there is a full and half marathons as well as a five-mile and two-mile course through a wine estate to complete, and participants can also run or walk it so no training is involved for the smaller courses.

Along the route, of course, participants are able to stop off and sample Denbies award winning wines.

Bacchus is a fun day out for all, the emphasis is on fancy dress, fun and fundraising. This year the nominated charity is supporting DMRC Benevolent

Instead, the owners of the cars themselves vote on which they deem to be the most elegant.

The Lightbox to exhibit rare combination of paintings and sculptures in

Impressionism: The Art of Life 29 September 2018 – 13 January 2019

S

hare the Impressionists’ depiction of their everyday world in this extraordinary exhibition, Impressionism: The Art of Life (29 September 2018 – 13 January 2019), showcasing a rare combination of French Impressionist paintings and sculpture, spanning from the early 1860s to the beginning of the First World War. Explore the Impressionist era from all angles in the exceptionally unique mixture of 2D and 3D elements at The Lightbox.

The exhibition will display works by worldrenowned artists such as Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, all of whom exhibited artwork in the very first Impressionist group exhibition in France. Home to the movement, the idyllic French landscape made for a fitting subject for the spontaneous and unprompted method of working embraced by these artists.

By including in equal parts painting and sculpture in this highly unusual display at The Lightbox, works from lesser known sculptors such as Dalou will be seen alongside the more widely recognised works by Impressionist painters.

The exhibition includes paintings and sculptures spanning four key themes related to everyday occurrences: maternity, leisure, work and the home. Visitors to the exhibition will see examples of paintings and sculptures that reflect each theme, arranged in the gallery into four easilydistinguishable sections.

Discover definitive portraiture by Auguste Rodin and Pierre Bonnard in the maternity section, celebrating women as mothers and carers in intimate and delicate studies. From maternity, the exhibition transitions through to looking closely at the quietly domestic, private lives of individuals in the home.

In leisure, spectators watch the ballet, the circus and the races, and enjoy dances, as depicted in Edgar Degas’ ‘Miss Lala at the Cirque Fernando’, 1879.

GIFTED: UNCOVERING THE STORIES BEHIND THE COLLECTIONS

The award winning Haslemere Museum is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year. Set in beautiful historic grounds, in the heart of Haslemere, the rich and diverse collections have been inspiring visitors since it opened in 1888.

T

o celebrate this milestone, the Museum will be hosting a summer exhibition uncovering the fascinating stories behind some of the collectors who gifted their wonderful treasures to the Museum. This is a unique opportunity to see rarely displayed artefacts, and learn how they became part of the Museum’s remarkable collections. Highlights include ancient Egyptian artefacts collected by the late Victorian artist and Egyptologist Walter Tyndale, who was one of the most popular and influential topographical watercolourists working at the turn of the century. The exhibition will also feature a variety of worldwide marine, land, and freshwater shells which were bequeathed to the Museum by Robert Henson Moses. There will be beautiful butterflies and moths to marvel at from Rupert Long, who amassed an extraordinary collection of over 7,000 butterflies between 1922 and 1959, mainly from Southern England. Visitors can also

expect to see a magnificent display of birds donated

by Dr Herbert French. These were prepared by taxidermists TE Gunn and F Ernest Gunn and have been preserved in stunning Edwardian style cases.

The Horsnaill collection recently donated to the Museum contains beautiful household accessories and items of clothing and on display for visitors will be a wonderful selection of Eastern European textiles to admire.

Our collections remain at the heart of the Museum and every year thousands of visitors come to learn, enjoy and be inspired As part of the celebrations, the Museum will be looking for people to contribute their memories to the ‘Memories of the Museum’ project. Using a mixture of oral and written memories, they want to build a picture of how the Museum has impacted on people’s lives. As part of the project, the Museum would love to hear from anybody who has any memories about the Museum that they would like to share. This could be an event you may have attended, or a photograph or even story you wish to tell. You can contribute to the project online

through the website, or in person at the Museum.

The Museum was founded by Sir Jonathan Hutchinson FRS, an eminent London surgeon, who set up a country home on the edge of town. He had a passion for collecting objects and built up an extraordinary collection of artefacts, purchased at auction and on overseas travel, which he originally displayed in the grounds of his home. Visitors were welcome by appointment to view Sir Jonathan’s collection of rocks, shells and wildlife specimens.

His Sunday afternoon tours became so popular, that he had to expand and by 1895 moved his museum into the town. Now one hundred and thirty years on, Haslemere Museum is one of the largest Museums in South East England and the collections are a rich resource of local, national and international heritage.

A

Table Outside is an immersive fine dining pop up that connects people with Surrey Hills food and drink producers.

Dinners are held in farms, vineyards and other beautiful places in the county with the menu for each event themed around the food grown or raised in the field in which the table is set.

This is A Table Outside’s story… Actually it’s just one of the stories because most of them are yet to be told.

This is the one about the girl who was shown a photo 12 months ago of a long dining table on a beach in the States. That girl was Bernadette Keane and the picture was of an event created by Jim Denevan, surfer, self-taught chef and the godfather of farm to table dining. His company Outstanding In The Field holds dinners all over the States. Do yourself a favour and take a look at the Instagram feed because it’s a thing of great beauty. Bernadette immediately fell in love. Not only with how these events looked, but also because of the stories they told.

And those stories are so important. Because in this era of fast, cheap, processed food, we often don’t know where our food comes from.

That’s why the idea of connecting people

with those who grow our food is so compelling.

To listen to their stories of what drives them to be farmers, to hear the passion in their voices when they talk about their produce and to taste the freshness and full flavour of food that’s literally just been plucked from the field... those are stories worth hearing over and over again.

And you can bet your bottom dollar, the chef at a farm to table dinner has a great story too. Did you know Daniel Britten, A Table Outside’s chef, was a decorator who applied for Masterchef on a whim and only went and got to the quarter finals? That’s just the beginning of his epic story.

You the guests, you have the chance to tell your tale as well if you want. Concert Season 2018/19 J oin G Live for their biggest ever Guildford International Concert Season (GICS) 2018/19 featuring seven incredible orchestras in eight concerts, as well as performances by guitarist Miloš and clarinettist Emma Johnson in additional concerts to compliment the season.

The opening night of the GICS will feature Miloš: The Voice of the Guitar who returns to G Live on Friday 28 September with Ensemble 7 in a performance which displays the extraordinary impact the guitar has had on 300 years of world music. Composers include Bach, Boccherini, Granados, De Falla, Rodrigo, Piazzolla, Villa Lobos and the concert will end with a set of great works by George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

On Wednesday 10 October the Russian State Symphony Orchestra who have, since the 1950s, been one of the leading orchestras to emerge from Russia’s great musical tradition. With the distinguished British pianist Barry Douglas, a past winner of the Tchaikovsky competition, the evening will include music from Tchaikovsky’s ever popular Swan Lake, Shostakovich’s second piano concerto with its beautifully lyrical second movement, and Rachmaninov’s epic Symphony No. 2 which many music lovers feel is Rachmaninov’s greatest work.

The third show in this year’s GICS takes place on Wednesday 7 November when the leading British

violinist, Charlie Siem will perform Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic Violin Concerto when he performs at G Live with resident orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra will start the programme with Mendelssohn’s evocative Hebrides Overture and will complete their performance with Sibelius’ monumental Symphony No. 2.

Then Thursday 29 November will see the Czech National Symphony Orchestra returning to G Live with a programme of classical favourites featuring excerpts from Dvorak’s New World Symphony, Strauss’ dazzling Thunder and Lightning Polka, Elgar’s much loved Nimrod Variation and Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Marche Slave. In the first half the renowned Russian pianist Nikolai Demidenko will give his famous interpretation of Chopin’s romantic Piano Concerto No. 1.

T

o celebrate their 250th anniversary this year, the Royal Academy of Arts is looking back at the fascinating history of its annual summer show in The Great Spectacle: 250 Years of the Summer Exhibition.

The 250 years of these exhibitions provide a snapshot into both British art and history. At its inception, the Exhibition provided a showcase for Joshua Reynolds, and his fellow founding Academicians, to show their grand canvases of society portraits and epic historic scenes. By the turn of the century, Constable and Turner were battling for supremacy, exploring the possibilities of landscape painting. Back in 1809, visitors flocked to see the new “genre painting” style of David Wilkie’s The Village Politicians; in 1874, they were drawn by the devastation of the Crimean War, brought to life in Elizabeth Butler’s The Roll Call. Four decades later, a Suffragette slashed John Singer Sargent’s Portrait of Henry James, demanding “Votes for women”, while in the midst of WWI three years later, a German bomb was dropped through the roof of Gallery IX. In the past century, household names such as Winston Churchill and Paul McCartney have had their works displayed alongside first-time exhibitors and celebrated artists and architects including Peter Blake, Zaha Hadid and Tracey Emin.

The Great Spectacle brings together some of the most important works in the history of the Academy and its shows – from the ones that drew crowds and caused sensations, to the ones that were rejected – taking visitors on a fascinating, ever-changing journey from the 18th century to the present day.

The Wisley Flower Show Bursts into Bloom this September T

he Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is inviting all garden-lovers to attend a late summer floral celebration at the RHS Garden Wisley Flower Show, from 4-9 September 2018. Supported by Witan Investment Trust, the show will feature spectacular floral displays and unique shopping opportunities all in one place.

Visitors to the Dahlia Show are invited to get involved and enter their own blooms into the ‘My Best Garden Dahlia’ competition, taking place on 8 and 9 September. On either day, entrants just need to bring along a single stem of any type of dahlia that they have grown, to be judged by a panel of experts.

Further show highlights include an exhibition of floral artwork by Anita Nowinska, a special Glasshouse display of aroids, including favourites such as peace lilies, and the Surrey Sculpture Society trail around the garden.

It’s also the perfect time to view the Exotic Garden, which has had its first full growing season and is an immersion of lush foliage and exoticlooking flowers.

Another exciting first for this year, is the arrival of The British Flower Bus. Attending as part of its nationwide tour, the Bus is the focal point of a campaign led by renowned floral designer Jonathan Moseley to champion the resurgence of Britishgrown cut flowers. Show visitors will be invited to board the bus to watch Jonathan’s floral design demonstrations and discover all about the campaign.

Extravagant floral art creations will also feature at the show. The Surrey area of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) will be displaying over 100 creative pieces, based on the theme ‘Something in the Air’.

Family Fun at Brooklands Museum T

here is masses to do this summer at Brooklands Museum in Weybridge while giving visitors a chance to learn and discover the amazing achievements in motor racing, aviation and engineering at this historic site that changed the world.

The Museum’s long-established and hugely popular rides in vintage-style cars will be running every Monday – Thursday in August until the 23rd.

Car rides take in the challenging summit of Test Hill and the Members’ Banking, the steepest part of the original Race Track, as long as it’s not too wet or slippery. Or, for a more relaxed journey, hop on board a real double-decker bus for a bus trip through the surrounding streets. Car and bus rides will run in the mornings and afternoons with a short break for lunch and are subject to crew and vehicle availability.

The Brooklands Learning Team will be laying on FREE drop-in workshops from 11am - 12:00pm and 1pm - 3:30pm on weekdays in August (except for the 27th) for youngsters with all materials provided.

The Concorde Experience is a half-hour virtual supersonic ‘flight’ on the Brooklands Concorde and runs every day, but on each weekday until 31st August, special Kids Tours will be running twice a day too. And don’t forget to look out for the Museum’s larger than life mascot, Bertie Bear, who will be roaming the site looking for fans to have his photograph taken with.

All of the Museum’s motoring and cycling exhibitions areas will be open for families to explore including the new Award-Winning Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed. Inside the newly restored Bellman hangar, visitors can ‘clock in’ and don factory work coats as they begin their ‘Brooklands Apprenticeship’. A series of workshops and interactives explore some of the skills used over the 80-year history of aircraft manufacture at Brooklands. On a new mezzanine level, the story of aviation design at Brooklands is told and visitors can design their own military and civilian aircraft from different eras of aviation including those of the future. Leaving the Factory and entering the new Flight Shed visitors can see some of the Museum’s collection of complete aircraft, including opportunities to sit in the cockpits of the Hawker Hunter and Harrier, as well as displays on radar, ground-to-air radio and pioneering pilots.

A triumph of the eclectic, for car and bike enthusiasts and families looking for a fun day out

he Shere Hill Climb is a family friendly day out in the heart of the Surrey Hills with something for every car and bike enthusiast. In a triumph of the eclectic our 2017 event included everything from a 1907 Berliet, to a McLaren 12c, a Dellow Mk1 and a De Tomaso Pantera, plus an HRD, a Vincent and an Ariel Square 4. In between these there were Astons (from DB Mk 3 to V8), a Bentley 4 ½ litre, an XK120, Angela Hume’s famous and much raced AC Ace, a Lancia Aurelia and a Ferrari 330GTC – alongside a Fiat UNO Turbo, Ford Cortina Estate, Alfa Romeo GTAm, Volvo Amazon and Ford Mustang.

The event on Sunday 2ndSeptember on part of the Olympic Cycle route in the beautiful Surrey Hills is becoming one of the most popular as well as eclectic Hill Climbs in the UK. And it is unique in as much as all profits are distributed to local charities – in the first 5 years it has raised over £70,000 for good causes.

enry VIII’s Kitchens at Hampton Court Palace were the largest of Tudor England. 200 cooks, sergeants, grooms and pages worked to produce over 800 meals a day for the hungry household of Henry VIII. Feeding the court was a complex business all done without modern conveniences as 1.3 million logs burned in the hellish fires every year. From boiling cauldrons to roasting spits, join the day-today grind of Henry’s cooks as you pass through this labyrinth of kitchen spaces.

The Tudor kitchens were divided into a number of departments, each controlled by a Sergeant and a team of yeoman and grooms.

The Kitchen department where meat was roasted was under the control of three Master Cooks, one for the King, the Queen and the rest of the Court.

These staff toiled under a complex set of rules determining which of the 1,200-odd members of Henry’s court qualified for meals as part of their pay.

Working in the kitchens could be a sweaty and dirty job. Henry VIII had to order the scullions to stop going about ‘naked, or in garments of such vileness as they do now, nor lie in the nights and days in the kitchen or ground by the fireside’.

A Spanish visitor to the Tudor court in 1554 said the kitchens were ‘veritable hells, such is the stir and bustle in them... there is plenty of beer here, and they drink more than would fill the Valladolid river.’

Henry VIII’s kitchens continued to be used for a further two hundred years, feeding the tables of Tudor, Stuart and Georgian monarchs and their many courtiers.

he 2018 Proms marks a range of events that occurred 100 years ago. Leonard Bernstein, who was born in 1918, was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His work as conductor, composer, pianist, and educationalist are explored in depth this season. John Wilson leads performances of West Side Story, arguably the best-loved musical of all time. The bank-holiday weekend, on what would have been Bernstein’s 100th birthday, will feature a Proms debut for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

100 years since the end of the First World War, the Proms revisits this key period in modern history.

A contemporary response by one of today’s most imaginative and eclectic young composers, Anna Meredith, in collaboration with 59 Productions, sees a major new work for orchestra, choir and projections premiered on the First Night of the Proms. The BBC’s Orchestras and Choirs once again provide the backbone to the Proms, appearing in over a third of the concerts this season.

As BBC Young Musician celebrates its 40th birthday, the Proms present the first ever Young Musician Prom, a gala concert bringing together over 20 of the competition’s alumni, including Nicola Benedetti, Michael Collins and Sheku Kanneh-Mason. This comes alongside a celebration of the BBC Proms Inspire scheme for young composers in its 20th-birthday year, and the fourth consecutive BBC Ten Pieces Prom. A groundbreaking initiative that has already reached over 4 million people, this summer it collaborates with English Pen, an arts charity that works with young people from asylum-seeker and refugee backgrounds, and London Music Masters, an organisation focussed on reaching children and young people in London’s poorest neighbourhoods.

Nine Late Night Proms contain an eclectic range of musical styles that reflect the more intimate setting of these ‘after-hours’ events. Highlights include the Proms debut of Grammy Awardwinning Senegalese singer, Youssou Ndour and his band, Le Super Étoile de Dakar, while original members of the Buena Vista Social Club come to the Royal Albert Hall stage for the first time too for ‘Havana Meets Kingston’, a project fusing the sound-worlds of traditional and contemporary Cuba and Jamaica. In ‘New York: Sound of a City’, Proms favourite Jules Buckley and a line-up of rising stars explore the current sounds on New York’s streets, embracing everything from disco-punk to feminist rap. Also in the Late Night series, Sir András Schiff concludes a two-year project with a performance of Book 2 of J. S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier.

There are over 90 debuts this season, notably the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in its 100thbirtday year. Achieving widespread acclaim in recent years for their highly original interpretations, Teodor Currentzis and MusicAeterna make their Proms debut, bringing their radical approach to Beethoven to performances of his Second and Fifth Symphonies.

the experts to share their advice for self-tan virgins.

E

verybody knows at least one: the fake tan-aholic who always looks beautifully bronzed even in the dead of winter.

For those who’ve been slathering on the dihydroxyacetone (that’s the active ingredient, FYI) since their teens, achieving that just-been-onhols glow is a doddle, but what if you’ve always been too scared to venture down the self-tan route?

If visions of ending up looking like David Dickinson or Ross from Friends after his spray tan disaster have deterred you, you needn’t worry - a subtle life-like tan is easily achievable at home.

“It doesn’t have to be scary,” says Carly Hobbs, tanning expert and Sienna X brand ambassador.

“If you’re new to tanning, take things slowly and start with the best kind of products - and preparation is everything.”

So how exactly do you prepare and what are the best tanning products for newbies?

Here, Hobbs and two other tanning pros share their top tips for before, during and after your tan...

Before: How to prepare your skin for fake tan “For as long as possible pre-tanning, exfoliate and moisturise as much as possible to keep skin soft, supple and tan-ready,” says Hobbs. “On the day of your tan, exfoliate to get rid of that last bit of dead skin cell build up.”

Waxing should be done 24 hours before tanning and shaving 12 hours before: “Leaving these time frames allows the follicles, from where the hairs are whipped out, time to calm down and the pores on the surrounding skin to close so you don’t get a spotty tan,” she explains.

“Apply a coat of nail polish to your nails on your hands and feet, as this will prevent tan from staining the nail plate,” says Marissa Carter, founder of tanning brand Cocoa Brown.

If you have dark circles under your eyes, Carter advises applying Vaseline to stop the tan from further darkening that area: “You can also add a small amount of petroleum jelly through your eyebrows to prevent the tan from discolouring them too.”

the best products for beginners During: The best tanning technique While moisturising in the week leading up to your tan is important, skip the lotion on the day: “Ensure your skin is free from any products, moisturisers, oils, make-up and deodorant on the day you tan as this can affect the final results,” warns Jayne Cooper, St Tropez skin-finishing expert.

“St Tropez Gradual Tan One Minute Everyday Pre-Shower Tanning Mousse is the perfect product for beginners. Simply apply to dry skin with or without a mitt, leave for just one minute and shower as normal and your tan will develop over the next eight hours.”

If you are using a product that requires a longer development time, you must use a mitt.

“Apply your chosen tan in upward sweeping movements, overlapping each area,” Cooper recommends.

“Let your tan dry before having a drink or brushing your teeth as accidental drips may wash away the colour. This also applies to tanning with wet hair,” says Carter. Same goes for doing the dishes, and you can’t get sweaty so exercise is out of the question.

“Sit back and relax in loose clothes as your tan develops, ideally go bra-less too so you don’t dent or mark your gorgeous glow,” Hobbs says.

“Have a quick warm, not hot, shower after your development time, but don’t use shower gel all over in the shower. Instead keep soap or cleanser to just bits and pits so not to strip off all your hard bronzing work.”

“The first time you shower after you’ve applied your tan, use shower gel but don’t exfoliate your skin,” warns Carter.

“Moisturise daily with an oil-free moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and gently exfoliate every two to three days, which can extend your tan by up to three days,” Cooper says. “Self tans will last on average five to seven days depending on which product you’re using.”

Once it’s faded, exfoliating or using a tan remover mitt will remove any last traces.

“Don’t forget your SPF when going out even when you’re tanning - faking it doesn’t protect you from the sun,” Hobbs says. “And if ever you want to strip off your tan, dive into the swimming pool.

The chlorine will pare back all of the colour!”

Green Oak Rules the Waves H

earts of oak are our ships… and more and more green oak is becoming the natural material of choice for those wishing to enhance their homes.

Oak was the timber used when the earliest Royal Navy ships ruled the waves.

Official figures show that in 1707 there were just 12,476 oak trees remaining fit for shipbuilding in the New Forest compared with 123,927 a century before.

But now there are sustainable plantations in Europe with France in particular having exceptionally well managed forests boasting as much as 524 million cubic meters of standing oak, which is culled at a rate of 1% per year and re-generates at a rate of 2%. Green oak is fast becoming one of the ecologically sound materials for attractive modern day home construction - whether it is for new build or erecting amazing new spaces and extensions.

Helen Flavell had already completed her design - working with C7 Architects of Guildford. She wanted a design and build brief for the conversion of her 16th Century cottage with a large new extension. Typically dark inside the cottage, she wanted lots of glass and green oak for the new environment of the extension, but at the same time enhancing the old cottage.

After attending a party where the building was formed with an oak frame, she called her architect and asked them to incorporate an oak frame into the design. C7 approached Living Oak of Cobham, Surrey, bespoke oak specialists who promise “a building which will stir your emotions from the first time you enter”. Living Oak designed the oak frame to form the main structure of the new space using 31 tonnes of green oak.

Helen knew that she wanted that perfect combination and balance with the beautiful oak components and state of the art glass. What she

got was a magnificent 240 sqm of additional space to create a new kitchen, dining room, master bedroom with en-suite and covered walkway with a double garage and accommodation over. This was in addition to the 180 sqm in the former cottage, providing the best of two architectural worlds - the character and feel of the cottage blending smoothly into the state of the art extension, with a light and warm home fit for the 21st Century.

hops. Places to buy things – right? But, when we came to open our first store, it felt like that wasn’t enough.

Here we were, designing collections for your home, and building places for you to get up close with them, so why not create an environment that feels more like a home than a shop and where you could always walk out feeling inspired in some way? Wouldn’t it feel closer to interior design than ‘shopping’? Wouldn’t it make it easier for you to picture how things would look in your house?

Wouldn’t it help you to plan what else you might want to put in a room together? Wouldn’t it simply make the entire shop experience, better and nicer?

So that’s exactly what we set out to do, six years ago with our very-first store in Winchester, and that’s exactly what we’re doing 31 stores later.

Inspiration starts from the outside-in for us. You shouldn’t have to wait to get through the door before you feel it. And that all begins with location, like it does for most brands setting up shop. But for us, location isn’t just about finding the area that’s best for you, it’s a case of looking for the right building, because Neptune stores are usually conversions of older properties. Original character and buildings with history are always our preferred spots, not just because of their charm, but because it’s easier to take different portions of the interior and design them to represent different types of home. In an older property, you can make the most of beams and nooks to build a country cottage area, but can equally pare the character back to show a more contemporary, city apartment interior. Adding character in is doable, but it’s always more convincing

when it’s the real deal. That’s another quick perspective point worth mentioning too. Country cottages, modern townhouses, sprawling barn conversions, smaller city homes – they’re all home perspectives that our stores try to reflect. One home doesn’t fit all. We know that and so do our stores.

It can take years for the right property in the right location to come up. But we’d rather play the long game than rush and make a bad move. Literally.

In the past, there have been buildings that are exactly what we’d been waiting for, and that we just wouldn’t be able to get in a town or city centre. Like Neptune Reading and Neptune Farnham. If we think that you’re going to enjoy spending time there and have a better, more memorable experience, and will want to travel a bit outside of the hustle and bustle, then we’ll go for it. That’s what matters to us most, rather than being in the prime high-street location and getting as many as people through the door as you can.

felt though. Our retail design team create the same rooms you’d have in your own home. Not nods to rooms, not a living room-like or bedroom-like setup, but full rooms. The living rooms often have working fires, the kitchens cabinets are fully stocked and at least one will be a fully working kitchen (oven and all). The bedrooms don’t have PJs under the pillow, but it certainly feels like nobody would tell you off for getting into bed and nodding off.

It’s the way that they’re styled too. One of the ways a customer once described it to me was how their shoulders go down as soon as they come in through our front door. People relax. They feel calm. And, most importantly, that they can leave any Neptune store understanding more about how to create that atmosphere in their home too, through colour, lighting and texture as much as through their furniture choices. We want people to feel as though they’ve had an easy-to-consume, interior design session and that they leave us with inspiration in one arm and confidence to fulfil those ideas in the other.

“Places for you to feel inspired” is the aim with a Neptune store.

That’s the point. It’s the combination of decoration, design and atmosphere. That warm welcome, that make yourself at home message, that feeling of wishing and wanting to move in, that energy from the ideas running round your head for your own nest. They’re what make our stores not stores. Stepping under a cascading shower can be one of the most luxurious feelings in the world. But turning the shower on to be greeted with a pathetic little trickle can be one of the most frustrating and disappointing experiences! words: sam wylie-harris

ndeed, the power of a good shower should not be underestimated. So much more than a means of getting clean, the right one can encourage us to break into a chorus of Singin’ In The Rain, awaken the senses and leave us invigorated and ready to face the demands of the day. Nearly 90% of UK households, according to AMA Research (www. amaresearch.co.uk), have at least one shower in their home, and with demand for super-stylish systems continuing to grow, leading bathroom specialists now offer an array of solutions for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

“The bathroom continues to be a key element of our homes, playing a much greater role beyond that of its traditional function as just another part of the daily routine,” says Robin Levien, international designer at Ideal Standard. “It has become both multi-purpose and multi-functional, an oasis of escapism and relaxation. A place for reinvigoration, transformation and even somewhere to pose, ponder and play.”

Dreaming of a shower upgrade? The first stage in the planning process is to address a number of key issues, such as water pressure, the fabric of the building and ceiling height. “ The most important thing is to ensure you choose a shower system that’s compatible with your water supply, to make sure you have sufficient water pressure to give optimal showering experience,” notes Joe Stephens, product designer at Roper Rhodes. Once the practical points have been addressed, you can drench yourself in the fun bits...

Dark Depths Style and ambience can make a big difference in a bathroom; an uncluttered spa style, and chic, minimal designs are ever-popular. And while lighter colour schemes may be most traditionally associated with this part of the home, don’t rule out moody hues, which can work especially well. “There is a trend for using dark colours on the walls and floor, which with good lighting, can actually make a small

space seem bigger, as well as delivering a boutique hotel feel,” says Levien. Think different shades of greys, particularly darker tones, which are very on trend and great for creating a tranquil feel of luxury and relaxation.

Wet & wild Oversized shower heads can - literally - wash our woes away and make us feel like we’re in Club Tropicana. Large, 300mm shower heads, which can be ceiling-mounted for a dramatic effect, are perfect for this as they create a cascading rain shower effect. Diverter valves are very popular, as they give the ability to switch the flow of water between two or even three different outlets, such as the main overhead shower, a handset and a bath filler.

Thermostatic shower valves are another popular choice, particularly for families, as they are safe and easy to use.

Show-stopping ceiling-fed shower heads are a huge trend, because they look great, and they provide a really luxurious showering experience.

‘Wow’ shower head features, such as waterfall settings and LED mood lighting, which create a sense of total relaxation are also hot this year.

The Wow Factor When space is at a minimum, often it’s all about finding inventive and user-friendly ways of fitting in the essentials - but those lucky enough to have lots of bathroom space to play with can tap into trends on a larger scale. Bathrooms are moving from the functional into the decadent. Colour, texture, shape and size have moved from being ‘safe’ to almost stretching the boundaries of good taste. There has never been so much choice and product variation, and trends are very fast moving.

Giving a traditional bathroom an up-to-date facelift, you could remove the bath and replace it with a large format slim tray and wet room. This totally transforms both the look, life and function of the bathroom. Think about coloured glass, as this can offer a ‘wow’ factor and also delivers some privacy, if the bathroom is used by more than one person at a time.

lurring the boundary between inside and out and playing with botanical effects is a passion for Selina Lake, who reveals her secrets in her new book, Garden Style: Inspirational Styling For Your Outside Space. “I hope I can inspire people to make the most of any outside space, and create everything from an outdoor living space to a garden room or a hideaway, and bring nature into decor indoors,” she says.

Here, Lake shares three looks from the book...

Create a cosy hideaway “More popular than ever, garden rooms are a useful addition to any space,” says Lake. “They can be used as office spaces, crafting rooms, yoga studios, or places to enjoy a million other activities.

You can adapt an existing building, such as a large shed, garage or greenhouse, or commission a new pod, cabin or summer house. Perhaps you’d like the garden room to reflect the garden and have a verdant, naturalistic ‘potting shed’ vibe, or you could opt for something strikingly modern that contrasts with the garden that surrounds it. If it’s a contemporary structure - like a glass conservatory a great way to bring the outside in is by using green, the colour of nature, for walls and skirting boards.

Green glass-bottle vases and faux plants can bring a quirky botanical feel to a sleek modern space.”

Top Tip: “If you have a surplus of blooms from your garden, cut them and arrange in galvanized metal buckets filled with water. Arrange by a doorway or at the bottom of a staircase. It creates a sense of walking through a flower garden.”

Bring the outside in “Bringing flowers and foliage in from your garden to enhance your home decor is a simple detail that makes a big impact, whether you’re in need of a table centrepiece for a special occasion, a welcoming display for a hallway table, or something just to bring a smile to your face,” Lake enthuses. “Joyful pops of vibrant colour from flowering spring bulbs are really uplifting,” says Lake. “When it comes to arranging flowers, I don’t have any rules as such. I like loose, natural-looking posies and am drawn to colour palettes that I find uplifting and will sit well 88 AUGUST 2018

with my interior.”

Top Tip: “I make black and white copies of vintage botanical prints and use brass bulldog clips to display them on a line. I also love empty seed packets, which can be grouped and used in a decorative way.”

Perfect the patio “I wanted to create a simple Scandinavian look, so opted for a clean, pared-down palette of black, grey and white, teaming it with natural materials such as wood, rattan and wicker,” explains Lake. “Lush green wisteria foliage and leafy hydrangea, lavender and tobacco plants in zinc containers and dark grey stone pots add scent and interest to my outdoor living room. I gave our tired wooden decking a facelift with black wood stain, and like to dress the sofa and chairs with comfy cushions and throws, just as I do inside.”

Top Tip: “Be ready for when the sun goes down - an outdoor rug will make a space feel cosier - and hang a cluster of string lights overhead and group candle lanterns on a coffee table.”
