SILENT POOL GIN WOWS ITS TWINS AT THE FREIBURG ‘SISTER CITIES’ MARKET ABOUT SILENT POOL DISTILLERS The Silent Pool Distillers is a new artisan distillery nestled under the North Downs in Albury, Surrey. It specializes in entirely hand-crafted spirits using a range of botanicals – fruits, flowers, spices, herbs – to capture the essence of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the bounty of English orchards, gardens and hedgerows. Silent Pool Gin is now exported across Europe and soon to the US, as well as available nationally and at local farmer’s markets. The still is powered by a wood fired boiler using logs from the Duke of Northumberland’s Albury Estate and water comes from the spring-fed Silent Pool. The pool itself, just below the distillery’s converted farm buildings, is the subject of wonderful romantic medieval legend. Well worth a visit! 12 AUGUST 2017

They linked nearly 40 years ago and it was through the 2016 Mayor of Guildford, Gordon Jackson, that Silent Pool Gin found its way onto the stall in the historic market square. He had taken a bottle of Silent Pool Gin as a gift for his opposite number on an earlier visit to Freiburg and it proved a popular choice! The Guildford Twinning Committee volunteers served tea and cakes and Silent Pool Distillery director Ian McCulloch and chief bottler Joe Van den Berg presided over a Silent Pool stall laden with their full range of spirits. They even took the trouble to get all their branding and information translated into German for the occasion! “The weather was lovely, everyone was very friendly and they really liked Silent Pool Gin,” said Ian. “Freiburg is a beautiful city and it was a great opportunity to go there and represent the best of Guildford.” www.silentpooldistillers.com

f you are a landscape photographer, you will already know of Charlie Waite. He is world renowned, has held solo exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, Sydney and London and his work is collected by individuals and corporations. Waite is coming to Imber Court, East Molesey, on Friday, 29th September to give a lecture entitled “Silent Exchange”. This is an amazing opportunity to see some breathtaking images and to listen to an entertaining speaker. He was an actor for ten years and knows how to handle an audience. Introduced to photography by his father, Air Commodore R.N.(Rex) Waite CB.,CBE, whose brainchild, the Berlin Airlift, will be remembered by some older readers, Waite started to photograph his colleagues including Ralph Fiennes and Catherine Zeta-Jones, but quickly became a devotee of the landscape. A friend of the late Patrick Lichfield, Waite not only enjoys the company of the famous, but has devoted much time to support amateurs. He founded ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year Award’ to encourage people to engage with landscape, urban or rural. Over twenty years ago he set up a company, Light and Land, which runs workshops worldwide. Margaret Gatter a keen

photographer from Surrey tells us she can vouch for their success having travelled extensively with the company. Magic moments waiting for sunrise on a sand dune in Namibia and photographing a rehearsal of the Cuban Ballet Company are but two. Waite has gained many prestigious awards, amongst them: Honorary Fellowship of the British Institute of Professional Photographers and the status of Direct Fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society. He was invited by the Royal Academy to show at its summer exhibition in 2015. His unique style is said to convey a spiritual quality of serenity and calm. Hospitals display his work to assist patients’ rehabilitation. Huw Edwards, BBC News, interviewed Waite regarding his trip to Libya in 2015: one of many television appearances. He has written more than twenty five books and will be bringing some along to Imber Court. The immediate response from anyone who has heard of him before, is, “I can’t miss it!” People are coming from all over the Home Counties and even from Australia. The money raised will go into the Speer Road Church’s building fund. A new kitchen and foyer will be built in August. A further £60 000 is needed to improve access to the building and toilet facilities. Both improvements will also benefit local groups who use the premises.

othing beats dining alfresco on a balmy summer evening and nowhere better than the Cobham Ivy, the latest addition to the Ivy Collection’s chain of salubrious brasseries. Occupying a desirable, riverside position, the white lisianthus-lined entrance, as quintessentially English as it is, doesn’t quite prepare you for the extensive renovations that have taken place inside. Once home to La Capanna, and more recently La Rive, square footage has been increased to accommodate 180 covers, with semiprivate dining for 12 in the mezzanine area. Since its inaugural opening, the venue is the talk of the town and has been basking in rave reviews, attracting a steady stream of well-heeled Surreyites. If not for fine wine served from a six litre Methuselah bottle or the popular chicken milanese dish, the ambience is as good as any reason to make a reservation. It’s also an excuse to dress up, for the evening attire is rather Chelsea-esque, prime time for groups and couples to gather. Deep blue armchairs and caramel leather banquette-style seating create an intimate dining experience and the Arancia onyx bar is a statement in itself, with ornate glasses hanging over the counter – the perfect spot for before and after-dinner cocktails. Yet, perhaps the pièce de résistance is the charming orangery, with appealingly rustic touches; aquamarine throws draped over the chair backs, flickering candle light and an abundance

of scented flowers. From the menu, which is a smorgasbord of tempting dishes, my guest Lucy and I choose a few hors d’oeuvres to kick off proceedings; succulent green olives, perfectly seasoned Arborio rice balls and courgette fries with a zingy mint yoghurt. For starters, we share scallops on a bed of pea purée and tamarind glazed duck liver parfait with toasted brioche – both are exquisite. Washed down with palate-grabbing Whispering Angel Rose, I have high expectations for our mains. Lucy opts for Asian-inspired cod in banana leaf with a miso glaze which, paired with a glass of Chablis, gets her seal of approval and I choose today’s market special, lamb rump, complemented by a glass of Pinot Noir. Preferring my lamb a little pink, it’s more than medium rare but, the flavoursome, creamy herb mash and asparagus compensates for this. Dessert has to be the mouth-watering chocolate bombe and its presentation is executed with aplomb. You cannot help but love this feast of melting chocolate, vanilla ice cream, honeycomb and caramel sauce. And to finish, we indulge in the cheese plate and a taster of sweet Moscato d’Asti. All too soon, home beckons us, but not before we are proffered the remaining rosé from the Methuselah. It would be rude not to. Make your reservation at theivycobhambrasserie.com

Putting traditional romance back into modern dating.
S
ummer can be such a romantic season, with everyone enjoying a more relaxed alfresco lifestyle; the sunshine, the holidays and the weddings. Equally it can highlight that we are still missing that someone special to share it all with. The reality is that we meet fewer and fewer people as we get older and so finding love and a committed relationship can be challenging. The chances of randomly meeting a like-minded partner are quite remote and, whilst internet dating might seem to offer a large pool of available partners, how committed and available are they? Furthermore, those with busy career, family and personal lives don’t have the time or inclination to trawl through the web’s unverified prospects. It’s just so unromantic. Enter Hayley Bystram, founder of elite dating agency Bowes-Lyon Partnership. Hayley recognised this problem, that many high-calibre, accomplished single people were looking for love and a serious relationship but wanted the experience of finding that special someone to feel more personable and more romantic. For that reason, she created an agency that had traditional values at its core. At Bowes-Lyon, every step of the match-making process is handled with the utmost delicacy; from initial profile creation to chats with potential suitors. Discretion and confidentiality is of paramount importance and only first names are shared with introductions, so that each member is in control of their personal information and can reveal details about themselves at a pace that suits them The secret of Hayley’s success is quite simple; she spends time really getting to know her clients. Hayley sits down with each prospective member for a complimentary and informal chat over coffee, before they join, to ensure that Bowes-Lyon is right for them, and they are right for Bowes-Lyon.

The venue this year is the breath-taking grounds of Hampton Court Palace; a royal setting which – with its incredible history and beauty – is the perfect pairing for the collection of rare automobiles set to arrive as part of the Concours this September. The focal point is a gathering of more than sixty unique or extremely rare cars, many of which will never have been seen before in the UK – let alone
all in one place. And, just like the palace itself, each car has a story to tell; the 1896 Arnold Benz Motor Carriage on display, for example, was the first car to ever receive a speeding ticket. The driver, Walter Arnold, was travelling 8mph in a 2mph zone and his car wasn’t preceded by a man on foot carrying a red flag – a legal requirement at the time. A policeman gave chase on his bicycle and fined Arnold for his recklessness. illies Wolfheart is a small family run business in the Yorkshire Dales Established in 2011. After over 20 years of owning large breed working dogs with delicate tummies and testing the majority of complete foods in the market place without much success. Millies Wolfheart was created by Mark and June with great emphasis on producing a range of healthy and completely gluten and grain free working and sporting dog foods. Millies Wolfheart discovered throughout their research that most dog food products available contained a high proportion of plant proteins and/ or did not specify the protein source and overall had very little in the way of meat. After researching ingredients and their benefits for a good few years, Millies first recipe in September 2012. It soon became apparent that no one dog food is suitable for all thus subsequently we went several steps further and began to produce a range of bespoke recipes that met Millies Wolfhearts high standards and requirements knowing as our range increased there would be more and more happy dog owners. Millies feel it is important not only to know our ingredients but to understand them and what impact those ingredients have on dogs which is why we are very particular on what goes into their recipes. While more emphasis is now being made to the quality of protein in dog food which is great news for our four legged friends, understanding of how much

should be used is still in its infancy but our research is building quite quickly and this has allowed them to grow product range with a brisk pace. Millies believes that while protein content is extremely important its source is the key. Here at Millies we do not use Chicken or eggs as we feel these are steadily becoming an intolerance issue for many dogs and unfortunately for the dogs chicken is used in almost all other dog foods in one form or another and this has to change, but as chicken is cheaper than potato in dog food it’s no wonder why companies place profit over ethics or indeed health. www.millieswolfheart.co.uk

BBC CELEBRATES O YEARS OF GARDENER’S WORLD
T
his year marks a half century since BBC2’s Gardeners’ World was first commissioned for television, and to celebrate there was a special hour-long anniversary programme airing on the official birthday, Friday 16 June 2017. In 1967, David Attenborough, then BBC controller, decided that flowers was the ideal subject to wow the handful of people lucky enough to own a colour TV set. So the BBC took the decision to
“Percy Thrower was the first presenter of the programme” launch a brand new programme, a half hour each week on BBC2 dedicated purely to gardening. Broadcast from a real allotment in Birmingham, the show featured tips and advice from expert gardeners and inspired the public with full colour footage of new plants and flowers. It was an instant success, and Gardeners’ World was born. Percy Thrower was the first presenter of the programme, and in 1973, he received the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour. Geoff Hamilton was the longest 40 AUGUST 2017
serving presenter, and in 1985 he took the show to his own garden, Barnsdale, in Rutland. He passed away in 1996, and was taken over by Alan Titchmarsh who presented Gardeners’ World from 1996 to 2002. In 2013 he became the first RHS Ambassador. 50 years on, Gardeners’ World is now Britain’s longest running gardening show with up to 2.6 million loyal gardening fanatics tuning in each week, with current presenters Monty Don, Rachel de Thame, Nick Bailey, Carol Klein, Mark Lane and Flo Headlam. BBC Gardeners’ World magazine was launched in 1991, with the first BBC Gardeners’ World Live show held in 1992 and has become an annual event ever since. For 2017 BBC Gardeners’ World Live returned to the NEC from 15 -18 June 2017, and celebrated in style with commemorative show gardens including a 1960’s Nostalgia Garden, showing how gardening has changed over five decades. Trends and crazes come and go, but Gardeners’ World is likely to remain a permanent fixture for as long as we have that desire to step outside with a spade and trowel. Men’s Wellness Clinic Many people consider hormone replacement therapy only a female issue. However, a man’s testosterone levels peak in his late teens, beginning a gradual, steady decline of about 1 - 2 percent per year from the age of 30 onwards. This can have a profound effect on your health and wellbeing. While most men under the age of 40 will rarely notice the gradual drop in testosterone, some men will notice the symptoms as early as 30 or even younger. Fatigue, loss of muscle bulk, sleep problems and memory loss are just some of the physical and mental symptoms of a testosterone deficiency. However, you do not have to suffer in silence. At the Light Touch Clinic, our unique medicallysupervised programme can help you rebalance your health and restore your energy and vitality. You will be invited to a thorough consultation with Carlos Santos, our Men’s Wellness Consultant, who will assess your suitability for treatment. Working closely with Dr Maroof Harghandiwal, Carlos will create a personalised hormone replacement plan.
Female Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Weight gain, forgetfulness, fatigue, anxiety… these are just some of the symptoms women may experience as a result of hormonal changes during the menopause. Over time, these symptoms can have a significant impact on your vitality and wellbeing. However, the experts at the Light Touch Clinic can alleviate these symptoms with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is a personalised treatment which uses hormones that are identical to those that your body naturally produces. Following a thorough consultation and a hormone level test, your practitioner will put together a prescription specifically tailored to your body’s needs.

Look and feel your very best this summer with Dr Peter Forrester and Ms. Helen McEvoy
C
urrently there are a bewildering number of cosmetic and anti-ageing treatments available. They all claim spectacular results, but sadly few live up to their promise. In addition to this, they may be administered by a variety of practitioners, including beauty therapists, aestheticians, nurses and dentists, with results and standards of care varying widely. Dr. Peter Forrester and Ms. Helen McEvoy strongly believe that as qualified doctors of medicine, their experience and scientific training allow them to look critically at the treatments on offer. They can then guide patients towards making voluntary and informed choices. As medical experts they recommend procedures and treatments that are suitable, are endorsed by scientific research, and most importantly, are proven to be effective and safe. They can then deliver these procedures and treatments, together with the highest standards of care.
Dr. Peter Forrester and Ms. Helen McEvoy offer: Non Surgical Treatments • Anti-wrinkle Injections - reduce frown lines and crow’s feet. • Dermal Fillers - smooth deeper lines and furrows as well as returning lost volume to the face. • Thread Lift - minimally invasive procedure where surgical threads are used to lift and support cheeks, jowls and neck. • Facial Peels - helps to return a healthy glow to dull tired skin. Peels also reduce fine lines, wrinkles uneven skin tone, acne and scarring.
• Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) - natural anti-ageing skin rejuvenation treatment using small amounts of recipient’s blood to improve the skin’s texture and to reduce lines and wrinkles. • Facial Thread Veins – we remove thread veins affecting the nose cheeks and all area of the face. • Hyperhidrosis – an effective treatment for excessive underarm sweating • Profhilo Skin Remodelling - a revolutionary new injectable skin treatment resulting in increased firmness and elasticity as well as an overall improvement in skin quality • Advanced skin care - ZO range of concentrated formulas delivers rapid results. A unique skincare regime will be formulated by Dr. Peter Forrester to ensure the best possible outcome.
INTRAcel stands the test of time. We have had INTRAcel radio-frequency microneedling for the last 5 years.. During this time numerous other skin tightening and rejuvenating treatments have been introduced. However, we believe that few, if any, of these have lived up to their early promise. We continue to be impressed with the results of INTRAcel and in our opinion INTRAcel remains one of the best skin treatments available. INTRAcel can: • Improve the tone & texture of skin, producing a smoother and younger appearance • Tighten the skin to reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines • Improve stretch marks and scarring • Improve active acne and post-acne scarring
Surgical Treatments Cosmetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery including: • Breast Enlargement • Breast Reduction • Breast Lift • Tummy Tuck • Liposuction • Body Contouring

Give your HEALTH a A shot in the arm!
dored by the A-list (Simon Cowell, Rita Ora and Cara Delevingne are said to be serious celebrity fans), Vitamin IV Infusions are an easy, effective way of delivering vitamins, minerals and amino acids directly and immediately into your bloodstream via an IV (intravenous) drip. Due to popular demand, Courthouse Clinics is now offering Vitamin IV Infusions at a selection of clinics across the group, including Maidenhead and Esher, courtesy of Advanced Nurse Prescriber Lucy O’Neill. Nurse Lucy is a highly qualified but very approachable medical practitioner, with 12 years’ extensive experience in the field of anti-ageing aesthetics and wellbeing. She prides herself on building a strong rapport with patients, helping them to look and feel great, from the inside out. Just as importantly, Lucy practises what she preaches: it was her own positive experience of Vitamin IV Infusions that prompted her to add them to her treatment portfolio. “I first learned about Infusions when I was feeling run down with no energy,” she explains. “I felt so much better mentally and physically after trying them, I wanted to give my patients the same benefits I experienced. And the reception so far has been brilliant. I get such great feedback from my patients afterwards – it makes my work really rewarding.” So what exactly do Vitamin IV Infusions achieve? The precise treatment effects vary depending on the patient, but in general terms they can boost wellbeing, increase energy levels, lift your mood and hydrate your body. We all know that vitamins are essential for normal growth and staying healthy, yet our bodies can’t produce all of the nutrients we need to function and thrive, which is why more than one in three people take daily vitamin supplements. What’s less well known is that only 15% of the active ingredients consumed orally actually find their way into the bloodstream. That’s not the case with Vitamin IV Infusions, which deliver their benefits straight to your cells. Courthouse Clinics offers a selection of different Vitamin IV Infusions, which allows patients to select the best combination for their personal needs. The infusion process itself is painless, and takes just 30 minutes. For optimum results, a course of Vitamin IV Infusions is recommended, followed by monthly maintenance treatments. Interested? Vitamin IV Infusions are now available at Courthouse Clinics Maidenhead (55 St Lukes Road, SL6 7DN) and Jill Zander – a Courthouse Medispa (96 High Street, Esher, KT10 9QJ). rom the catwalks to the red carpet, slicked back hair has been EVERYWHERE this season. And no wonder - the sleek style is equal parts edgy and polished, and because the rest of your hair is down it’s much easier to achieve than a complicated updo. At the SS17 shows, hair stylists went down two routes. There was the perfectly preened and smoothed look, as seen at Balmain, Carolina Herrera and Marchesa, or the artfully messy wet-look vibe seen at Markus Lupfer. Can’t decide which to try? We got the lowdown from the experts on how to create both...

The truth about the current temporary relaxation of the planning laws in relation to Conservatories and Extensions
W
hilst homeowners can in theory have larger extensions at present, the temporary rules are not a blank cheque and there are still plenty of legalities that need to be adhered to, so before adding an extension make sure you have understood what you can and cannot do before having something built that may end up being a mistake. According to the PlanningPortal.gov.uk website an extension or addition to your house in England is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions (for a full list of all the rules, visit the planning portal itself): 1) No more than half the area of land around the “original house would be covered by additions 74 AUGUST 2017
or other buildings. 2) No extension forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway. No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof. 3) Single-storey rear extension must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres if an attached house or by four metres if a detached house. 4) In addition, outside Article 2(3) designated land and Sites of Special Scientific Interest the limit is increased to 6m if an attached house and 8m if a detached house until 30 May 2019. 5) These temporary increased limits (between 3m and 6m for terraced and semi-detached houses and between 4m and 8m for detached houses respectively) are subject to the prior notification of the proposal to the Local Planning Authority
and the implementation of a neighbour consultation scheme. If objections are received, the proposal might not be allowed. 6) Maximum height of a single-storey rear extension of four metres. 7) Maximum eaves height of an extension within two metres of the boundary of three metres. 8) Maximum eaves and ridge height of extension no higher than existing house. 9) Side extensions to be single storey with maximum height of four metres and width no more than half that of the original house. 10) Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house. 11) No verandas, balconies or raised platforms. The above government guidance reflects temporary increases to the size limits for singlestorey rear extensions (which commenced in May 2013) that must be fully completed by 30 May 2019, under the temporary relaxation permitted under the associated Neighbourhood Consultation Scheme. Before any homeowner gets too excited, the extra temporary increased extension size limits for conservatories etc. are still subject to planning law, and in practice only going to be permitted if not a single neighbour objects, and your local council agree that your written submission and the professionally drawn plans of your proposals that they require comply with both planning law and the Building Regulations. A downside of the Neighbours Consultation Scheme is that you have to wait 8 weeks for a determination. Plus, if any neighbour objects, your local council is probably only going to allow development if it falls within the limits of Permitted Development (i.e. a maximum of 3m projection from the back of the original rear wall for attached houses and 4m for detached houses). They will then advise you that should you want to have a larger development considered, you will need to submit a full planning application. Consequently, the smart way to go in the first place is to apply for full planning permission should you want to have an extension greater than these sizes, as this immediately saves you 8 weeks, and if done in consultation with your local councils
“Before any homeowner gets too excited, the extra temporary increased extension size limits for conservatories etc. are still subject to planning law”
and planning professionals, you’ll stand a far better chance of gaining an approval. The new temporary increases don’t apply to “designated land”, Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If your property is part of a relatively new development, your local council may have withdrawn your PD Rights, which would mean you’d need to submit a planning application, even if it was say only wanting to add a 3m x 3m conservatory onto the original rear elevation. So before you embark on any extension it is always worth checking your property has sufficient PD Rights still intact to carry out the project you are looking to have done. For a free design consultation, expertise and advice with any conservatory or orangery extension with either a lightweight solid roof, double glazed roof or roof lantern light, contact the experts at Hazlemere Window Company on 01344 989938 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

ocated in the heart of one of London’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, Chelsea, this showroom presents the new collections of carpets, the iconic and the great classics of the brand. The new London showroom is an important development for the French luxury brand created by Alphonse Catry in 1912. Les Manufactures CATRY are exporting for the first time in the United Kingdom, with their exceptional expertise in high-end tapestry that links legacy to innovation, tradition to modernity. Villeroy & Boch unveils Swarovski-studded bathtub
esign, premium quality and exclusivity – Villeroy & Boch combines these aspects in two extraordinary luxury products. Chinese star-designer Steve Leung has created an exclusive design for Octagon and Squaro Prestige with Swarovski crystals. The result is breathtaking. The pedestal washbasin and free-standing bath, wrapped in countless crystals, sparkle glamour and luxury never seen before.
Sparkling crystals Steve Leung’s design portrays mountain and water silhouettes using thousands of Swarovski crystals. Leung chose Swarovski Xirius Rose crystals in the three sizes 5 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm, which glitter brilliantly thanks to their special cut. Lovingly crafted, nearly 5,000 of these crystals were applied to the leather for the bath and more than 1,000 for the wash basin. They create a vivid effect of depth that appears even more magical with the sparkling precious crystals. Octagon and Squaro Prestige are not the first Villeroy & Boch premium products to have been refined with Swarovski crystals: various models in the LaFleur exclusive taps and fittings collection are 82 AUGUST 2017

The heart of
THE HOME
On average, people spend from £8,000 to a massive £20,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space…so depending on the price range, what can that buy you?
French country kitchen This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifully-turned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate on the floor, black or cream enamel Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, so choose an antiquestyle armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood as a focal point. Hang copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger 84 AUGUST 2017
Shaker Style kitchen The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in.
Retro Kitchen A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points.
Contemporary Kitchens The sleek look that comes hand in hand with a contemporary kitchen will provide instant gratification. The practical use of space allows for more movement in the kitchen and provides easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment as you prepare those mouth-watering dishes. Also, contemporary colours provide a more open feeling which adds into the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.
and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware.
LAYOUT
“No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs”
Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. There are people who want to frame pictures, wash dogs, even do keep fit in their kitchens. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multipurpose – somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. “The vivacious party animal” needs a U-shaped kitchen with island in the middle and open ended for social gathering, for example. “The Good Life fans” prefers a big L-shaped layout with a range-style cooker, large fridge and freezer and large farmhouse table. “The London weekday bolthole” needs galley-style layout with plenty of wall storage cabinets because most of the below surface cupboards are filled with appliances and gadgets. Meanwhile the “pony club set” loves a free-standing pantry offset to a wraparound kitchen with peninsula and, of course, an Aga.

brings together two brands, a blend of automotive know-how and the culture of living that celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Maranello carmaker. An office chair that captures the excitement, the speed of the driver’s seat, as well as the passion for racing. The armchair has an architectural and modular structure, and offers expansion possibilities. For the moment two versions are available, the President and the Executive. Both comprise a reclining base and seat, integrated with two different backrests. The President is the managerial model with a high backrest that is inspired by the ergonomics of competitive racing seats. The Executive model, a chair that adapts to all work contexts, has a deliberately low and narrow backrest to ensure more freedom of movement. The design of “Cockpit a” synthesis of automotive innovation and inspiration and the materials are the same as those used in Ferrari cars, like the external shell moulded from carbon or alutex. The central band on the seat takes its cue from racing seats, while the swivel device sports the same design and mechanical elements as the steering wheel. For the leather upholstery, the Ferrari Design Centre team has chosen shades and finishes inspired by the trim of the three Tailor-Made service lines, which allow for the personalized configuration of the car: Scuderia, Classica and Inedita. Cockpit can also be customised in terms of its colors and materials. www.ferrari.com

Broadview
Bespoke Shading Solutions A Family Business It all started in the back room of a hardware store in the late seventies, when David Pratt decided to start selling blinds within his already successful timber business in Broadstone. Whilst incredibly ambitious, David could never have imagined that this extra merchandise would one day transform into a multi-million pound business. What’s so charming about Broadview is that it still remains a family business, even now almost 50 years down the line; with David’s sons Mark and Ian at the helm, the business continues to grow and take-on new and exciting projects.
Innovation At Its Finest When I asked ‘Mike Lingham’ (head of sales) what his favourite project to date had been, he went on to explain their recent work up in London, for the hugely successful Recording Studio. Broadview had initially been invited to rehabilitate their roof terrace, by replacing their somewhat worn umbrellas. Only when they visited the site their creative team was unanimously struck by a different vision – something that would totally transform that space. Regularly used as an entertainment center for guests and recording artists, Broadview created a design concept that would renovate the terrace into the ultimate outdoor party pad, that could still stand up to the erratic British forecast. Broadview planned, designed and fitted a state of the art awning unlike any of it’s kind.
Luxury Products For Your Home I was under the illusion that the kind of products that commercial clients got would be different to those for residential jobs, but Mike explained, “There is no difference between the products we use in people’s homes, to the ones used in our large scale commercial projects – just more of them”. So ultimately the blinds in your home could be identical to those in a five-star hotel or even a recording studio for that matter – swanky windows indeed.
Shading On Trend Mike informed us that the way forward was very much about ‘automation’. It’s been a pretty innovative decade in terms of the progression of technology and it hasn’t bypassed the shading industry either. Supposedly in the next 5-6 years nearly all window shading will be battery powered, or in one way or another automated, as predicted by Mike and evidently the benefits are endless. Keep your eyes peeled, with the powers at be regularly attending training and industry relevant expos, I’m 94 AUGUST 2017
confident that Broadview will be one of the very first to stock automated shading, within budget.
Bespoke Shading Solutions Little insider information for those who might not know; the recent extension of ‘Bournemouth’s Oceanarium Café’ was created by Broadview’s talented team of designers and manufacturers. The iconic local haunt wanted to make the most of their incredible sea views, which were previously covered by towering white walls, so Broadview created a custom outdoor structure that could easily cope with the blustery seaside conditions, but didn’t take away from the view. For luxurious shading solutions at affordable prices, visit or get in-touch with Broadview. 57 Hatchpond Road, Nuffield Industrial Estate, Poole, Dorset BH17 0JZ Telephone: 01202 679012; Email: sales@broadview.co.uk; www.broadview.co.uk

Enhancing the Home with an Indoor Pool Paul Green and his wife had always wanted an indoor pool, a dream that was made possible when they moved to a new home and had the space to extend.
T
hey began researching companies in the area that would be able to meet their requirements. Keen to use a well-known firm that was reputable and a specialist in the area, the couple wanted to find a company that had the capability to manage the whole project, removing the need for individual contractors. The Green’s research and local connections led them to Origin, the UK’s original luxury indoor pool company.
96 AUGUST 2017
Origin is the way Forward
Paul contacted Origin and arranged a meeting. “It was really good to see the owner of the business taking a personal interest. He said all the right things and the advice he gave was great. They organised an onsite visit for us so that we could get a feel for the work they had previously done. This really solidified our decision to choose them”. Paul also had a local contact who lived in the area and had experience with Origin. He gave the company a glowing recommendation.
Getting it Right Origin worked alongside the Green family to design their dream pool. It was going to be an extension of their home and needed to match the exterior of

the house. It was essential it didn’t stand out but internally, they wanted a high quality, modern and contemporary style. Paul adds: “We drew a lot of inspiration from pictures of other high end pools and I used these to demonstrate to Origin and the architect what we wanted.” The couple wanted a bright and spacious area. Colour changing lighting and iridescent tiling which reflects the light perfectly, both provide the feel of luxury. In addition to creating a relaxing space with a spa pool, it was also important to Paul that he could use the pool to maintain his fitness. The space to build an Olympic sized pool wasn’t available, so Paul decided to install swim jets that create resistance as he swims, providing a more challenging exercise regime.
Brilliant Builders During the project, the couple were kept up to date with progress. The Origin team were available to chat through the project whenever they wanted, including regular meetings to discuss finishes and make other important decisions as they went along. Paul was extremely impressed with the construction team. Despite undertaking a huge build project, they kept disruption to a minimum and didn’t knock through into the Green’s property until it was essential. This helped to keep the property secure throughout. “The team were great, they kept the site as clean as they could and they were all extremely friendly. Once you get over the mental hurdle that your property is going to be a bit chaotic for a few months, this is a really exciting part of the project as you begin to see your pool take shape”.
Paul and his family couldn’t be happier with the space they have created: “I’ve always used swimming as a form of exercise. I used to visit a local hotel three times a week before we had our pool installed and this proved difficult if I was working late. Now, I use the pool five times a week and when the rest of the family visit, they have a fantastic space for leisure and relaxation. Especially our granddaughter, she’s three years old and just loves splashing around when she visits.” Paul looks at it as more than a pool though; it’s an extension of his home: “The good thing about the space is that it’s a room in its own right. Although my wife and I may have slightly different agendas when it comes to the pool – I primarily use it for fitness and she will use it for leisure. It’s also a very pleasant space to, relax and do things such as have a drink or read a book. Our friends are amazed by the complexity of the design!” So, would the Green’s recommend Origin? “Absolutely, they were honest, realistic and clearly experienced – they had the whole package.” Origin has over 35 years’ experience building award-winning swimming pools. The company can work with you to build your dream pool house, just like they did for Paul and his wife. To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996
