FARNBOROUGH HOSTS HISTORICS’ CLASSIC CAR SALE ON 11 TH MAY

Astirring selection of evocative classic cars awaits visitors to Historics

Auctioneers’ up-and-coming sale on Saturday 11th May.

This will mark the first time that the ebullient auctioneer will host a sale at Farnborough International Exhibition Centre. Also known as the home of the British Motor Show, the heart of the Farnborough complex is a stunning, purposedesigned indoor hall which will be utilised by Historics to create a stirring display of some 170 varied sale entries.

According to Mark Perkins, CEO of Historics: “We are delighted to add this sale to our auction calendar. Whether a classic car owner or not, we encourage all to come and join us at this great indoor venue.”

In keeping with all Historics’ sales, the classic cars on sale are immensely varied in terms of age, marque and value.

With summer coming, the many convertible classics are sure to be high on the interest agenda. Classic Jaguars always make a strong showing and to many there’s nothing better than an XK120, first introduced in 1948.

A 1953 XK120 Drophead Coupe, benefitting from extensive restoration, waves the Jaguar flag sportingly at this sale, whilst nearly twenty years its junior, a unique 1972 Lotus Elan `DHC ‘Sprint 5’ is representative of another British sporting classic with a tremendous following.

Historics is the nation’s number one seller of Mercedes-Benz classics and enthusiasts won’t be disappointed with the offering here, a 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda in long term

ownership for over 45 years being just one standout example on sale.

Staying with premium German marques, a 1990 Porsche 911/964 Carrera 2 Cabriolet, resplendent in its special order metallic red body colour, is also sure to attract significant bidding interest.

Those with a leaning to Italian classics are sure to be attracted by the sensationally-fast 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello ‘World Speed Record’. One of just 33 manufactured, this is the Ferrari model that established three world speed records including 100 miles at an average speed of 190.2 mph.

But this sale is not just about feisty sports cars. On sale is a wide selection of more affordable classics from a host of different manufacturers and eras, including ever-popular models from the likes of MG, Triumph and Austin Healey. Visit the website historics.co.uk to see all the regularly updated entries, and to pre-register to bid, in the auction hall, by phone or online. There are two full viewing days before the sale commences at 9.30am on the Saturday. Entry is by sale catalogue – available at the auction entrance.

Elevate Your Taste Experience

Silent Pool Gin is a luxury handcrafted spirit which captures the very essence of the Silent Pool and the surrounding Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty where the distillery is located. In celebration of their Surrey Hills home the distillers were inspired by local florals in the recipe development process. From chamomile and elderflower that grows in abundance around the Silent Pool to the roses and lavender in their local village, the use of aromatic florals is a key element of the blend. The florals are combined with many classic gin botanicals including juniper, of course, to deliver perfectly balanced citrus, herbal and spice layers of aroma and flavour.

In fact, did you know that 80% of our taste experience is derived from aroma? This rich, clean, juniper-driven London Dry gin is crafted in special way to deliver enhanced layers of aroma with complex heart, head and base notes. This stunning aroma is one of the reasons why Silent Pool Gin delivers an enhanced taste experience. The clever distillers at Silent Pool were further inspired to create a brand-new way to serve a classic gin and tonic which enhances aroma even further. Traditionally a G&T garnish will involve cutting a lemon, lime or orange wedge to spritz and place in the glass. The garnish delivers the

initial aroma you encounter in your drink, and therefore plays a critical role in defining the taste experience so they wanted to enhance this aspect of aroma significantly compared to citrus slice alone. The result of their considerable research and development was a revolutionary approach to create an intensely aromatic liquid garnish to mist across the top of your drink which works in perfect harmony with the 24 botanicals intricately layered in Silent Pool Gin.

With the atomiser, spray the liquid garnish twice across the top of your glass to create a long-lasting aromatic mist. With 120 sprays per bottle, you can create 60 serves, everything from cocktails such as martinis to your best ever Gin and Tonic. The Bergamot Orange liquid garnish delivers rich and floral notes with bright citrus undertones which perfectly complement Silent Pool Gin botanicals. This innovation can replace the need for fruit garnish effectively reducing food waste as well as delivering an elevated taste experience.

CRANLEIGH STAGES WEST SIDE STORY 60 YEARS AFTER BEING FIRST SCHOOL EVER TO DO SO

In 1964, Cranleigh drama made the national press when it staged West Side Story, a radical move reflecting the changing times and the first amateur production of it in the world. Now the School is celebrating 60 years of musical theatre with another run of shows.

From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents’ book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.

Cranleigh’s Head, Martin Reader said: “I have always wanted to see West Side Story performed by a school but no-one has ever been brave enough. Just as our school took the risk 60

years ago, I’m proud that our Music and Drama departments took on the challenge to ensure that Cranleigh continues to be a school that will take a risk. Education should push and challenge boundaries. It has to tackle relevant issues.”

The performance will mark the last musical under his headship as he retires in the summer after a decade at Cranleigh which has prioritised the performing arts.

In a further celebration, pupils from Cranleigh’s flagship International School in Abu Dhabi will join the cast as dancers, rehearsing separately over two terms and joining rehearsals two weeks before. It’s a fitting collaboration to mark 10 years since the Cranleigh Abu Dhabi first opened its doors, and to christen Cranleigh’s brand new Dance studios which open this term.

Over the past 60 years Cranleigh has staged dozens of musicals, including Carmen, Oliver, Cabaret, Guys & Dolls, Les Miserables (twice), Into the Woods, Chicago, We Will Rock You and Little Shop of Horrors. It’s a much loved school tradition and one that is here to stay.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Hurst College strives to ‘go green-er’

The climate agenda is now more important than ever. Greenhouse gases are at a 4.5-million year high, one million different species are at risk of extinction, and 200 million people will find their homes under water by the end of the century. In a world where the richest 1% of humanity— arguably those best placed to tackle the climate crisis—are responsible for twice as many carbon emissions as the poorest 50%, is there really any hope of preventing future disaster?

The world is, at least, coming to understand the harsh reality that our planet now faces, and we must all do our part to mitigate the worst of global warming’s impacts. When everyone comes together, a little can go a long way. With this in mind, Hurst College is working extremely hard to promote its sustainability and operate in the most environmentally friendly way possible. The UN’s 17 ‘Sustainable Development Goals’, as a series of targets focussing on the world’s most pressing environmental challenges, are in the College community’s sights as it strives to ‘go green-er’.

Pupils take their own initiative in bringing the College’s sustainability goals to fruition. Headed up by our Sustainability Committee (2021), pupil and staff collectives (the Climate Awareness Group, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Group, and the Staff Forum) meet regularly to discuss and implement sustainable practices across the board. To name just a few, clothes and pen recycling schemes are organised each term, and on Service Afternoon each week, pupils participate

“Headed up by our Sustainability Committee (2021), pupil and staff collectives (the Climate Awareness Group, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Group, and the Staff Forum) meet regularly to discuss and implement sustainable practices across the board”

in recycling, farming, and woodland conservation activities. The College farm goes from strength to strength, and its fantastic produce—including cooking apples, eggs, and meat—is regularly enjoyed by pupils, parents, and staff.

Progress does not stop there. Not only has our wonderful catering team introduced many more low carbon footprint ingredients into our menus, by weighing and advertising the amount of servery food waste each week, they encourage all pupils to take only what they need. Across the wider campus, our grounds team have also been hard at work: by transforming a previously hidden well into an on-site irrigation source for our sports fields, they have significantly reduced our need to purchase externally sourced water for grounds maintenance. With so many fields across our 100 countryside acres, several of our projects focus on promoting biodiversity too. Wildflower planting on verges and hedgerows, switching to organic fertiliser, and engaging in initiatives such as ‘No Mow May’ all contribute to enhancing ecosystem development. hppc.co.uk

Opening the door to your child’s future

A guide to School Open Days

As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…

• Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting

• It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly

• Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.

• Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally

• Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY….

Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.

• How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?

• Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?

• Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too

“Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important”

compelled in pressure)

• What are the classroom sizes?

• What is expected of my child with regard to homework?

• Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?

• Is there a bullying policy?

• What lunchtime meals are available?

• What sports and music facilities are available?

• What after school clubs and trips are available?

• How many pupils branch out into further education?

After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

56 APRIL 2024 EDUCATION

Don’t forget about what ‘Prep’ education is really about…

There are so many threats to ‘Prep’ education at the moment and much has been written about the primary impacts of these. It is, however, the secondary order impact that worries me most on behalf of our children and their parents who are investing so much in private education.

The increasing market pressures have resulted in independent senior schools adjusting their models to start at Year 7 (when pupils are 11). This, in turn, has meant that many prep schools (and especially in London) are being forced to finish at the end of Year 6. So, prep school fees are going towards 11+ preparation (which is, of course, better done at school than via tutoring) rather than genuine preparation for the social, pastoral and academic challenges that lie ahead in the teenage years and beyond. By transferring Years 7 and 8 to senior schools, we are missing the opportunity to prepare our pupils to make the most of and to flourish in these senior schools. This has always been the key secret of a quality Prep education.

Ironically, as pressures increase on teenagers it is now that this preparation is properly needed. A 13 year-old who truly knows who they are as a person will be more able to cope with the peer pressure of social comparison that comes at senior school. They will also fully understand the importance of intrinsic motivation from an academic point of view and will enjoy their learning more as a result.

At Eagle House (the prep school owned by, and next to, Wellington College) we aim to offer the very best of education in the crucial two years that

“At Eagle House we aim to offer the very best of education in the crucial two years that are Years 7 and 8”

are Years 7 and 8. The benefits of spending these years in a Prep school are imparted in a passive way, simply by being the leaders in the school and not being ‘socially squashed’ by older pupils. But, in modern prep schools, they are also imparted actively via immersive pastoral care, via reflective work with tutors and via coaching. New pupils joining (with flexi-boarding options) add social competition in Years 7 and 8 but small set sizes allow that competition to be truly preparatory rather than ‘sink or swim’ in nature.

So, as the market changes, let’s be careful not to forget what makes Prep schools so special and so genuinely important.

TA revolution in skin rejuvenation

DERMAPEN MICRONEEDLING WITH EXOSOMES

At The Cosmetic Doctors Company

he derma roller micro-needling device was first developed almost 20 years ago and remains a popular form of skin rejuvenation for both clinic and home use.

Dermapen is a significant improvement on traditional needling by roller. Dermapen is an electronic, oscillating device with a disposable sterile cartridge of needles at the tip that penetrate vertically as it glides over your skin. This results in super-fine microchannels and

“This ability to deliver anti-ageing products, such as exosomes and growth factors deeping into the skin is now regarded as the major benefit of micro-needling.

We believe that the combination of exosomes with Dermapen is a real advance in skin anti-ageing medicine”

much less unnecessary trauma to the skin resulting in a faster recovery. Active serums applied to the skin during micro-needling will penetrate via these microchannels into the deeper layers of skin producing significant improvements compared with conventional topical application. At the Cosmetic Doctors Company we now use a combination of Exosomes and growth factors in conjunction with Dermapen.

Exosomes are microscopic droplets that are naturally produced by our cells. They are cellular messengers containing growth factors, proteins, and mRNA playing a role in communication

“Exosomes are believed to be significantly more powerful than retinol, the current gold standard in skin anti-ageing”

between cells. These trigger cellular repair and rejuvenation.

We recommend two treatments 4 ~ 6 weeks apart for maximum benefit.

The results are not instant; this is about regeneration and longevity.

Top spring trends

From fabulous florals to marvellous metallics, this is how to style the runway looks, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When we flick through fashion shows, it’s with great excitement and anticipation… moreover, how these costume dramas will be reimagined into wearable, must-have items that we can’t wait to slip into.

And with firm favourites enjoying a bijou update and sexy separates coming into play, here’s what we’re looking forward to wearing when these key looks land in-store…

SHORT SHORTS

The warmer months are all about baring more, and for the spring/summer season, the mini has been pushed aside in favour of the micro short. That’s right, it’s time to get your pins out. From Paris to Milan, models strutted down the catwalk in the shortest of shorts. Nina Ricci perfected the look with fishnet tights, setting the tone for sexy but sophisticated; while Max Mara paired them with silk shirts, oversized canvas jackets and strappy heels. Either way, stylish neutrals, snakeskin prints and clean tailoring signals spring chic.

HIGH WAISTED

Sure to be a big hit, high-waisted trousers are universally flattering, and if you’re after a few more inches, they lengthen the leg. The key is to choose the highest style that’s right for you. As seen at Aadnevik, Rokh, Ralph Lauren and Emporio Armani, wear with a cropped top, tailored jacket – or, as a twist on an old favourite, a bandeau top with bare midriff to show off your waist.

WHITE DRESS

If there’s one thing we love, it’s the wanderlust, dreamy vibe that puts us in a sunny mood when we don a white maxi dress. Designers including Michael Kors, Stella McCartney, Valentino and Susan Fang embraced the allure of broderie anglaise and ruffles for a breezy, fresh take on fashion’s most romantic silhouette. Add a casual edge to your diaphanous dress by wearing it with T-bar flat sandals, or white platform trainers.

CRAFT

craft trend channels crochet, fringes, tassels and embellishment… in a word, craftwork. As seen at Bottega Veneta, with giant pom poms adorning crochet dresses; laser-cut florals at Valentino, and twisted strands and fancified fringing at Asai. By the time the high street embraces these eclectic creations, you can look forward to toned down, tactile pieces with movement – and a good measure of artfully placed decor.

Flower power and plush posies were speaking volumes on the runway with petal prints, petalshaped curves and all matter of flora flourishing in the new collections. Highlights included Burberry, Paul Costelloe and Rodarte. The latter, in their ready-to-wear collection, teamed a silk, floralpatterned, bias-cut slip dress with a floor-length, pink silk cape… stunning. Whether you go dress and cape combo – perfect for glamorous garden parties – or fancy florals with a focus on feeling feminine, it’s a perennial staple.

TRANSPARENT SKIRT

There are lots of ways to make this new addition to your wardrobe work for you. Whereas models at Erdem, Jayne Pierson and Louis Vuitton waltzed down the runway with their undies on show, it’s

possible to tweak this sheer skirt trend with bigger briefs – aka high-waisted hot pants; or footless opaque tights. But if you do dare to bare, think co-ordinating knickers in the same colour, with lace trims, embellishments or showy sequins… designed to be seen.

METALLICS

Be it a slither of silver, or full-on crystals, this is your summer to shine… But just in case you’re having a feeling of déjà vu, silver sirens have been shimmering down the runway for the past couple of seasons. Alexander McQueen, Schiaparelli, Courrèges and Roksanda – to name a few – are still showing the love to lamé and metallics… and so are we. Furthermore, whereas some looks encourage you to play it safe with accessories, more is more with metallics. Which is great news if you fancy a pair of eye-catching silver kitten heels – the shoe for S/S24 – to rock with your silver trousers. Or, a slick silver handbag to team with a dazzling silver dress when you’re going out out. Either way, silver is the standout performer on our wish list.

BRILLIANT BEAUTY BUYS TO ELEVATE YOUR SELF- CARE

Because a little indulgence goes a long way, says Sam WylieHarris.

If you’re wanting to up your beauty game, you’re not alone. Especially if you’re looking for an escape from the everyday –the balancing act of work and play, while trying to look and feel your best. Here, experts share their top tips to boost your self-care rituals…

Skincare with benefits

“Skincare is an essential part of my self-care routine,” says Leanna Zaman, beauty specialist at Boots. “It gives me a moment to pause for self-reflection after a busy day whilst my skin soaks up the benefits.” “If you don’t already have a conscious routine, try dedicating 10 minutes both morning and evening to prep your skin and reconnect with yourself,” suggests Zaman. “Your regime doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective – spend a few extra minutes massaging your moisturiser in,” advises Zaman. “Your skin will thank you, too.” Dr Mary Sommerlad, consultant dermatologist and Vichy Laboratories spokesperson agrees: “For a fresher skin appearance, I strongly recommend being consistent with an effective, evidence-based skincare routine.” She also suggests adding in a hydrating serum to plump the appearance of skin and boost radiance. Sommerlad says to then follow on with a moisturiser of choice targeted to your skincare concerns.

Wellbeing aromas

Don’t forget to consider body care as well as skincare, advises Zaman. “We’re seeing more consumers hack their dopamine levels by elevating

their everyday beauty basics with mood-boosting scents, textures and colours too.” She suggests trying scented body butter and lotions with uplifting aromas. “Fragrance is a key part of experiencing a product as it can transport us to another place, time or mindset.”

Shower and bath care

“Try switching up your daily routine in small ways to incorporate more wellbeing practices into your week,” suggests Zaman. “For example, simply swapping a morning shower for an indulgent evening bath adds another precious moment of self-care and renewal.” She says embracing aromatherapy stalwarts like essential oils can help you restore and relax too, transforming your daily soak into a relaxing ritual and spa-like experience. “I’m also a great believer in every time we have a bath, it’s an opportunity to make it a mini-spa moment!” enthuses Chrissie Rucker OBE, founder of The White Company. “At the end of a hectic day, you can’t beat a good relaxing soak, even if it’s only for 10 minutes. Light a favourite scented candle, pour in a lovely bath soak, dim the lights and relax.” She continues. “And then some time massaging in a deeply nourishing body lotion will also leave skin glowing before wrapping yourself in a snuggly robe.” Zaman agrees: “Incorporating scented candles into your night-time routine can also help create a tranquil atmosphere, calm your mind and promote rest.” She’s a fan of candles infused with sleep-inducing notes of lavender and soothing eucalyptus. “It’s a scent I associate with rest, so it helps me unwind for a perfect night’s sleep.“These simple sensorial experiences can help you to reframe your mindset, whether you want to uplift or wind down after a long day,” adds Zaman.

Royal Ascot Lookbook’

Royal Ascot unveils its first ‘Lookbook’ under new creative director Daniel Fletcher. The fashion designer made history as Royal Ascot’s first ever creative director in its 300+ year history. By Rikki Loftus

Royal Ascot has unveiled its first Lookbook under fashion designer Daniel Fletcher – the British racing institution’s first ever creative director in more than 300 years.

While still highlighting tailoring, British designer Fletcher – who first rose to fame after dressing Harry Styles – has applied his signature, bold aesthetic to the annual Lookbook. It’s set to help racegoers be inventive in how they source their outfits, to create an inspired look that’s authentic to their personal style.

Ascot is an important fixture in the fashion stakes – with notable attendees of the prestigious event including King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Fletcher has produced five consolidated edits that showcase a range of looks appropriate across all enclosure dress codes.

These include a ‘New Guard’ category, which showcases clothing from independent designers and rising stars in the UK, and ‘The Conscious Edit’, which takes a more sustainable approach and includes pieces from Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood.

In 2022, Royal Ascot relaxed their famously strict dress code for the first time due to soaring temperatures, with racegoers being allowed to remove their jackets and ties.

Now, Fletcher is adding an exciting new edge to the event’s style focus.

“This season, I wanted to bring a fresh take on fashion at the races and the magical world of occasion dressing,” said London-based Fletcher, 33.

“Inspiration came from my lifelong fascination with British heritage, and the stylish characters one might find at the racecourse this summer and beyond, whilst also paying homage to the array of styles able to be showcased across each enclosure, as well as my favourite Royal Ascot looks throughout the decades that I discovered during my research delving through the pictorial archives.

“This includes my signature style of building an outfit based on neutrals and my love of tailoring, which I’ve then juxtaposed with more playful maximalist looks that highlight a sense of British sartorial elegance and the glamour of Royal Ascot.

“Be it flamboyant or understated, Royal Ascot gives us the chance to embrace the famous dress codes and dress up, encouraging freedom of expression through dressing. For 2024, I want to capture that joy and inspire racegoers to push the boundaries with their own unique style, and to embrace their own creativity.”

Originally from the North West of England, Fletcher launched his eponymous menswear label, DANIEL w. FLETCHER in 2015, after graduating from Central Saint Martins and gaining experience with fashion giants including Louis Vuitton, Lanvin and JW Anderson. He soon started getting noticed, especially after Harry Styles began wearing his clothes.

In 2020, he took part in Netflix’s Next In Fashion series, which saw him make it to the final.

Now leading the style helm for Royal Ascot, Alexandra Bertram, brand and creative lead for Ascot Racecourse, said of Fletcher’s first Lookbook edits: “From quintessentially ‘Royal Ascot’ looks that embody our sartorial heritage, through to the playful elegance of vintage dressing and relaxed formalwear, there’s a look that speaks to every style generation across every enclosure.”

Treating prostate cancer with focal therapy

Adiagnosis of prostate cancer can be frightening and overwhelming. There are many treatment options and whilst this might feel bewildering, the wide range of options represents a chance to choose the right one, along with your medical team, to successfully treat or manage your cancer.

PROSTATE CANCER IN THE UK

More than 130 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every day in the UK. There has been a sharp increase in incidence since the 1990s and it is now the number one form of cancer affecting men in the UK. Diagnosis with any cancer can be frightening, but for many men, being told they have prostate cancer can also spark additional worries about their continence and sexual health.

The good news is that as well as being one of the most common forms of cancer, prostate cancer is also one of the most treatable. Survival rates have trebled over the last 40 years and new and minimally invasive treatments, such as focal therapies are helping men treat their cancer with reduced chance of side effects.

FOCAL THERAPY IS A MINIMALLYINVASIVE TREATMENT OPTION

Focal therapy is a treatment option suitable for men who have medium (intermediate) risk prostate cancer, ideally in one part of the prostate. As it treats only the cancer, and a small area around the cancer, the side effects of treatment are much less than those for traditional prostate cancer surgery or radiotherapy. It requires a careful assessment of

the prostate using MRI and biopsy information.

For men who are suitable, it is done as a day surgery procedure. Follow up is similar to being on active surveillance, and includes MRI scans and sometimes biopsy.

It allows some men to continue to have good sexual and urinary function, while treating the cancer. For example with following the HIFU procedure (High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound), less than 1 in 100 men reported urine leakage and 2 in 3 men had no problems with sexual function, while the remaining third were able to with tablets. As it’s a small treatment, it can be repeated, and if necessary, surgery or radiotherapy can be used at a later date.

There are a number of different energies used in focal therapy for prostate cancer, including ultrasound (High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound, or HIFU) and electroporation (passing an electrical current across the tumour to kill it). King Edward VII’s Hospital is one of the few private hospitals in the UK to offer these treatments.

KING EDWARD VII’S HOSPITAL FOCAL THERAPY CENTRE

The King Edward VII’s Hospital Focal Therapy Centre is led by world-leading experts, supported by nurse specialists and a multi-disciplinary

team meaning they’re able to offer personalised treatment plans tailored to your needs and recovery. Using the very latest technology including HIFU and the da Vinci xi surgical robot and located in a convenient central London location, you can access fast treatment for your condition.

Whether you’re experiencing symptoms, have a raised PSA level or have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, the King Edward VII’s Focal Therapy Centre is here to help you. It can be an overwhelming and nerve-wrecking time and starting private prostate cancer treatment can be confusing. The team at King Edward VII’s Hospital is able to talk you through every step of the process, choose the right treatment for you and get you back to living life to the fullest.

The Garden aims to capture an autistic person’s everyday experience of the world, using walls of cork to create spaces dedicated to different types of social interaction - at work, with friends and family, with partners, and with ourselves - highlighting a strategy called ‘masking’ – a potentially draining process involving consciously or unconsciously hiding autistic characteristics in order to fit in.

A POOL FOR EVERYONE

There are so many reasons to choose Easy Pools…

GREAT DESIGNS AND SPEED OF INSTALLATION

Easy Pool’s huge modular range means that there is a shape and size to suit everyone. Gone are the days when building a pool meant having builders on site for weeks on end, not to mention delays caused by rain.

Most pools in the range are completed in a few weeks. Compare that to a concrete pool that can take months to complete, during which time your garden looks a mess. Pool sizes range from 4m to 12m with flat or sloped bases. There are currently short lead times as most models are in stock.

SMOOTH FINISH

Leisure Pools fibreglass swimming pools have a smooth, clean gelcoat finish that is non-abrasive.

MAINTENANCE-FREE

The gelcoat finish on a Leisure Pool not only looks great, it is also so easy to look after. The surface is smooth and non-porous so it cleans easily and is very stain resistant.

COLOUR RANGE

Leisure Pools offers an exclusive range of seven beautiful colours, each with its own sparkle and shimmer finish, ensuring you will be able to find the ideal colour to suit your home, taste and budget.

COMPATIBILITY

Salt chlorinators, chlorine, freshwater systems and ozone systems all work wonderfully well with Leisure Pools fiberglass pools. Whatever your choice may be, it will be compatible.

SAFETY FOR CHILDREN AND PETS

Automatic safety covers comply with all EU regulations. Many pool owners have children or grandchildren or entertain friends with children. When owning a pool where kids will be playing, safety is a major concern. The side of a swimming pool can often be slick and hard to grasp for children. The safety ledge allows children to stand on the ledge and grasp the side of the pool. This can be helpful for children learning to swim, and can provide parents with added peace of mind..

WARRANTY

If you are getting quotes, ask if a lifetime warranty is being provided on the structure of the swimming pool. At best with a concrete pool you will get a seven-year warranty. Do you hope to have a pool for longer than that? The manufacturer is so certain that they build the world’s best composite pools, that they offer a Lifetime Structural Warranty and a Lifetime Structural Osmosis Warranty on all swimming pools.

Bring your small garden to life

With spring just around the corner and warmer days on the horizon, Dobbies, the UK’s leading garden centre, has some tips on how people can maximise their outdoor spaces, no matter the size. From sleek chairs and foldable bistro sets, ideal for city balconies, to compact barbecues and pizza ovens for small spaces, Dobbies has something to suit every kind of garden.

Find out what Dobbies’ Head of Buying (Home & Seasonal), Lynsey Abbott suggests for getting the most out of your outdoor space this spring and summer, and her tips on maximising what you have.

ALTERNATIVE SEATING

Comfortable seating is a must when it comes to making the most of your small space, and Lynsey says there are plenty of fantastic options to create a cosy reading nook or spot to enjoy your morning coffee. “Hanging egg chairs have risen in popularity over the past few years thanks to their playful design and ability to add instant charm to any outdoor space”, comments Lynsey. “Perfect for curling up with a book on a sunny day, egg chairs allow you to hang out in a cosy cocoon, soaking up the rays, and they come in a variety of styles and sizes. If you’re looking for a focal piece to elevate your patio, our Double Folding Egg Chair is a great choice to make an impact and can be folded away for easy storage during the colder months.

“For smaller spaces, a single statement chair is all you need to create a relaxing spot. Wicker is a huge trend for Spring Summer 2024 thanks to its versatility and timeless style, and it complements most outdoor spaces. Our green wicker Cashbah chair, new for 2024, is a great investment piece that will last for years to come and is wonderful for small gardens and city balconies.”

COMPACT FURNITURE

If you’ve got limited space to play with, Lynsey suggests looking for a colourful bistro set to brighten up your chosen area. Lynsey says: “Foldable bistro sets are fantastic space savers and work especially well to dress up empty city balconies and create your very own stylish alfresco dining spot. Typically a lot less expensive than larger sofa sets, bistro sets are great value, meaning you don’t need to spend a fortune to get your balcony looking its best for summer. Dobbies’ range for Spring Summer 2024 includes some gorgeous new colourways that will allow you to inject vibrancy and personality into your outdoor space and give it a new lease of life. My personal favourite is the sunshine yellow ‘Betty’ bistro set which instantly uplifts moods with its cheerful colour and floral design.”

ALFRESCO DINING

When it comes to eating outdoors, Lynsey notes that you don’t need a huge amount of space to cook up a delicious feast. Lynsey says: “This year, Dobbies has introduced some innovative new cooking options to allow everyone to enjoy a spot of alfresco dining in the summer months. Great value kettle BBQs make a great addition to small patios and courtyards and prove you don’t need a huge garden to grill up a storm.

“In response to an increased demand for innovative outdoor cooking options, we’ve introduced an expansive range of portable pizza ovens that demonstrate the potential of small gardens. From great value Ooni models to the super sleek Gozney Roccbox to the award-winning Witt ETNA Rotante rotating pizza oven, there’s something for all budgets.”

PLANT FOR IMPACT

You don’t need a huge garden to welcome colour and fragrance with seasonal plants, and Lynsey believes that Dobbies’ new outdoor accessories will inspire gardeners to get in touch with nature. Lynsey says: “Plants bring outdoor spaces to life, and there’s no reason small gardens can’t reap the benefits. In our Spring Summer 2024 collection, we’ve got balcony planters, ideal for hooking onto fences and railings to save space, and a gorgeous collection of outdoor pots that will jazz up any plant. For maximum effect, group varying pot

sizes together to create a mini jungle effect and colour-coordinate to your outdoor furniture for a cohesive look and feel. Alternatively, if you like a classic vibe, terracotta pots never go out of style and we’ve got a wide selection to choose from.”

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAIL

Lynsey’s top tip for making the most of your small space is to pay special attention to the accessories. Lynsey says: “Small touches make the biggest difference in compact gardens, and they’re a good cost effective way to transform the overall look of a space. You’ll be surprised at the difference a few decorative throw cushions can make – and even better if they double up as seating when entertaining guests. Decorative accessories like this are also a great way to get creative and let your personality shine through, and Dobbies has a wide selection of colours and designs to choose from.

“To create a country garden feel in your small space, mini hanging bird houses will help you welcome wildlife and add natural charm. Pair these with pollinating plants in pots to create a real buzz and embrace nature without sacrificing lots of space.

“If you’re fortunate enough to have the space for plants, make the most of these and create beautiful seasonal displays with your cut flowers. Ideal for bringing your dining table to life for summer soirees, this is a simple addition that will make a noticeable difference to your outdoor space.”

How are charity gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show funded? The sponsor helping good causes bloom

Project Giving Back is sponsoring 15 show gardens this year. Hannah Stephenson digs into how it all works.

Have you ever wondered who funds the charity gardens at RHS the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and what happens to them afterwards?

The gardens are a great way for charities and community projects to highlight their cause – but many wouldn’t exist without grants.

This year, Project Giving Back (PGB) is sponsoring 15 of the iconic event’s show gardens.

The philanthropists couple behind it all (who prefer to remain out of the spotlight) were inspired to start PGB after the pandemic, when RHS Chelsea Flower Show had been cancelled or postponed, and since 2022 have spent millions funding 27 Chelsea gardens.

“The founders came up with the idea that if they took on the cost of putting a garden on the show, it would benefit a charity, and designers would be inspired to design a garden that they love,” says PGB CEO Hattie Ghaui.

They’ve since provided between £3-4 million a

year, says Ghaui – a garden grant can range from £70k to £500k.

How much difference has PGB made?

“Without Project Giving Back, I’m not sure how Chelsea would have bounced back from not having a show (in 2020) and then having a late show (in

September 2021) because of the pandemic,” says garden designer and Samaritans volunteer Darren Hawkes, who designed the PGB-sponsored 2023 Samaritans’ Listening Garden at Chelsea to mark its 70th anniversary.

“The focus shifted with the show gardens, to more attention on their purpose and their legacy, not just their aesthetic but why we are doing this, who is it for, and how are they going to benefit? It really enabled those charity messages and narratives to sit at the forefront.”

He says the show helped to make the 70th anniversary of the Samaritans its most successful campaign. “The contact they had with the general public through media, spin-off events and just contact at the show dwarfed anything else that’s happened previously,” Hawkes reflects.

How does PGB choose gardens to sponsor?

Designers, in partnership with charities, are invited to submit ‘expressions of interest’, examining the due diligence of the charity, understanding the concepts and creative direction of the designer, looking at where the relocation plan will be.

“This year we had 130 expressions of interest. We took that down to a long list of about 75 and then a shortlist of around 30. In 2025, we will fund no more than nine gardens in total,” says Ghaui. Working in partnership with the RHS, the idea is that the funding will gradually reduce as other Chelsea sponsors return.

What happens to the gardens when the show is over?

Every garden sponsored by PGB is relocated, some in their entirety, others are repurposed into multiple sites. “We look to relocate the gardens to sites that either have a grounds team and a maintenance plan already, like hospitals and schools, or have up-and-running community programmes,” adds Ghaui.

Designer Andy Sturgeon’s 2022 The Mind Garden was moved to a disadvantaged area in Barrow-in-Furness, where it has become a reinterpretation in a space that has sat empty for 50 years. It now provides a ‘green lung’ in an urban environment.

“It’s made a big difference,” says Glen Mahaffy, peer support worker at Mind in Furness. “It’s a community orientated space and we’ve engaged really well with the local community.”

The garden gives people a sense of pride and helps their mental wellbeing, he adds: “It gives our volunteers somewhere to go and work. We have group sessions in the spring, summer and autumn and it’s a great venue for holding outdoor events.” They have had mindfulness sessions, therapeutic gardening groups and conversation groups there.

“It gives people a purpose, the opportunity to contribute to the upkeep of the garden, and benefits the lives of people who are otherwise stuck in the house in a sedentary existence,” says Mahaffy. “The sheer essence of having somewhere to meet adds a different dimension to what we offer at Mind in Furness.”

What are the future plans?

As time moves on, PGB’s involvement with Chelsea will be reduced. Its final year will be 2026. After that, it will be documenting everything it’s done and it’s hoped the RHS, other philanthropists and charities can use its legacy to demonstrate the value of Chelsea.

Ghaui believes helping charities raise their profile is PGB’s biggest achievement.

“I’ve heard stories of charities that have raised over £800,000 in one night from just being at Chelsea,” she says. “It’s given charitable organisations access to an amazing event that they couldn’t otherwise pay for. And it certainly puts smaller charities on the map, such as Horatio’s Garden [who construct biodiverse gardens in spinal injury centres], which was catapulted into the spotlight.”

“Designers, in partnership with charities, are invited to submit ‘expressions of interest’, examining the due diligence of the charity, understanding the concepts and creative direction of the designer, looking at where the relocation plan will be”

Pergola Perfection

Forest Garden launch stunning Radial Pergola as consumer interest thrives

Forest Garden, the UK’s largest manufacturer and distributor of wooden garden products, has launched a new scene-stealing pergola as interest in outdoor structures grows.

Using data from Pinterest, Forest Garden has found that searches for ‘corner pergola’ has soared over the last month - increasing 100%.

It comes as Forest Garden launch their Premium Radial Pergola, a new corner pergola that boasts a contemporary design and strong lines. It will suit all styles of garden, injecting a sense of grandeur in any outside space.

Jenny Davis of Forest Garden said: “Adding a large feature can make a huge difference to the overall look, feel and use of any garden. The Premium 90 Degree Radial Pergola offers statement style and height, and it can be used to trial plants, lights and other decorations, and will comfortably fit seating in its shadow.”

The 90-degree design makes it ideal to make the most of tucked away corners, but it can be paired with one of more to create a semi-circle structure, or even a full circle if space allows.

The Premium 90 Degree Radial Pergola joins Forest Garden’s Pergola Collection, which also features a Dining Pergola – a modern space in which to entertain, the Ultima Pergolas which are perfect for zoning garden spaces and the Modular Pergolas which are ideal for smaller spaces.

Jenny added: “A wooden pergola allows homeowners to extend their living space while embracing the outdoors and creating their own little haven.”

Your garden becomes an extension of your home, and the choice of furniture plays a pivotal role in creating a seamless transition from indoor comfort to outdoor relaxation. Ensuring you select the right pieces is paramount.

Start by contemplating your outdoor furniture needs. Each space and lifestyle demands different requirements, so it’s crucial to identify these at the outset of your shopping journey. Consider all the activities you envision for the space. If you anticipate warm evenings lounging with the family, a modular set might be the answer. Alternatively, for intimate al fresco dinner parties or brunches, a smaller dining set could be perfect.

If feasible, we strongly advise seeing the furniture in person before purchasing it. Visiting a showroom allows you to closely examine the finish and materials, and even try out different collections. Come and experience our beautiful Bridgman showroom in Walton-on-Thames, where our experienced design professionals can guide you toward the perfect furniture for your outdoor space, while you enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee.

Rattan comes in various weaves and materials, catering to classic and contemporary aesthetics. Bridgman’s rattan furniture collections are expertly crafted using only the finest synthetic weaves, ensuring longevity and practicality. Aluminium, on the other hand, offers a modern touch. DOPAMINE DECOR

Go wild. Release yourself. It’s the time. Dopamine décor has arrived and – as the name suggests – it’s zooming in on using the home to boost the mood. Think of it as one step further from viewing the home as a sanctuary. The home has become a playground.

At its core, dopamine decor is inspired by dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ chemical responsible for pleasure and reward. Integrating its influence into interiors taps into human psychology, and has led to the current boom in interiors created to amplify happiness.

So what does dopamine décor actually look like? There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape,

“There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape, but most of all there’s variation”

but most of all there’s variation. What makes us happy is so innately personal, that no two dopamine-dosed rooms will ever look the same. It could be a space full of mismatching furniture, a single powerful statement piece amongst the calm, an unpredicted combination of colours, texture where before there was smooth, moments of design that ignite surprise or a proudly showcased personal collection of objects. It’s design meeting emotion in the most playful and unrestricted way.

LIBERATION FROM LIMITATION

Juxtaposition and contrast are key. ‘Clashing’?

Throw that word out of the window and embrace eclecticism. Sure, not everything that brings you visual bliss coordinates with each other, but so what? The point is it’s beautiful to you, and it’s your home after all – forget about how the rule book says it should look and hone in on how you feel, not how you think you’re meant to feel. Get that dopamine going, decorate with abandon and design a space that’s all the more unique, vibrant and authentic for it.

Identify items that evoke a burst of positivity when you see them. Treat these as the centre of your space, and build up around them, working them into an existing set up – there’s no need to completely redecorate, using a single or few pieces of furniture, lighting, rugs or accessories can be

HOME & PROPERTY

just as cheerful and effective as creating a whole new look.

YOU DO YOU

The essence of the dopamine decor trend lies in selecting furniture and accents that genuinely bring you joy and reflect you as a person, so each object or aesthetic is imbued with meaning as well as beauty. Spaces should deeply resonate with you, prompting a surge of pleasure, contentment or sheer delight and moving past the way they look on a surface level to forge a connection with the sentiments. Rooms set ups can take inspiration from childhood, objects, art, a treasured collection, fashion, travel or a memory – dig deep into yourself.

LEVEL UP THE JOY FACTOR

Nothing is off the table – your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn. Perhaps they evoke a joy-filled memory, or perhaps they stir up an emotion, or perhaps their sheer beauty gets your heart beating. Dopamine decorating is not about being subtle – now’s the moment to be daring and introduce any objects, colours or themes that ignite passion and awaken the senses. Don’t hesitate – put it on display in its full glory and cheerful splendour.

BRING ON THE BRILLIANCE

For many of us, colour plays a dominant role in decorating for that hit of happiness. From a rainbow explosion in one space to a gentle smattering of calmer shades, either one colour or a combination of many tends to strike a chord with us on a deep level (that sometimes we

“Nothing is off the table – your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn”

can’t even explain). As dopamine décor gathers momentum, bright, cheering hues are on the up, with kaleidoscopic spaces filled with vivid, often contrasting colours filling homes with optimism and good vibes. An easy way to get involved? Choose objects individually rather than trying to make sure they all ‘work’ together – don’t worry about that – and organically layer shapes, forms, colours, patterns, or materials to grab attention and lift the spirits, or simply go a bit bolder with the colours you’re naturally drawn to.

BEYOND BRIGHTS

While dopamine’d homes are the antithesis of quiet neutrality, that’s not to say calming, colourless spaces can’t get involved, and if you’re not an every-colour-all-in-one-space type of person, that’s great too. It’s about what brings personal satisfaction. A dash of pigment, texture or interesting material here and there can be just as effective as a space drenched in colours if it rouses your senses. While vibrant, elaborate, high contrast designs often define this style, a minimalist approach can also classify as dopamine decor if it creates a glow of wellbeing and a jolt of joy. chaplins.co.uk

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN A HIGH PERFORMANCE GERMAN KITCHEN:

• Customisation - Although most German furniture works on a modular system, the luxury ones should be able to be made to custom sizes to the millimetre in all directions.

• Solid sides - Pull out pantries should have metal boxes and solid bases not wire baskets with inset plastic bases.

• Fine shelf adjustment - Having shelves that can adjust in sub 2cm increments allow full space utilisation.

• Inside door storage - Extra trays, boxes, bars and holders attached to the back of a door can add up to 30% more storage to a unit.

• Sealed cabinet frame - An additional profile protects the inside of the cupboard from dust, fumes and much more.

• Real metal in impact areas - Metal profiles add durability on handleless kitchens and metal bases on sink units.

• Lights that glow - You shouldn’t be able to see the individual LED’s and the colour temperature and intensity should also be fully adjustable.

• Hinge and drawer quality - Smooth action of hinges and drawer runners is absolutely essential. Soft close should be fully integrated into the base of moving parts to maximise internal space.

• Inside Inserts - Everything has its place and a place for everything, there should be an extensive range of accessories. These should be in various configurations and materials.

• Soft open not just close - On units with large movements and taller goods, should soft open to stop bottle rattle.

ADDING PERSONALITY to Your Kitchen

Tori Young, Senior Interior Designer at HollandGreen tells you how.

The kitchen is the heart of the home and it’s often where our clients first start thinking about their renovation or upgrade. As an interior designer, it’s a great first room to get to know our clients and from there, often where the design concept for the whole scheme comes together.

The kitchen may be the engine room of family life, but that doesn’t mean it has to be function over form. There are many ways to inject designled elements and create a stunning and characterful kitchen that is unique to you.

Joinery style. Think out of the box and move away from the norm. You can push boundaries by stepping away from traditional shaker-style units and opt for a flat panel door with a finger

pull. Don’t be afraid to mix styles, such as an elevated dresser-style island on legs next to painted cabinetry. Or a stainless-steel island is always sleek and practical.

Brave with colour. Be bold with your cabinets and paint them something other than off-white. If you are a little nervous, go for the pop of colour on the island - India Yellow by Farrow & Ball is one of my favourites. Pick a colourful cooker or paint the walls and ceilings a bright colour, keeping the units more neutral. Going for a clash can achieve an overall stunning look.

Open shelving. These give you an opportunity to add colour, texture and pattern. Whether your shelves are decorative displaying collected objets

Artwork. Introducing art in the kitchen, any subject matter you love, can become a focal point within the room, adding personality, height and colour.

or whether storing kitchen paraphernalia, they add interest to a room. Don’t be afraid to have an open pantry on display – it doesn’t need to be manicured like the images we see on social media.

Lighting. Good task lighting (over the hob and food prep areas) is paramount in a busy kitchen, but decorative lighting also adds a unique element to the space. Play with proportion and go for oversized pendants over the island.

Wallpaper and unconventional materials. A wallpaper in a kitchen is super-fun, especially behind open shelving. Opt for a practical Vinyl material which can be sealed for extra durability.

Texture & layering. Washable rugs on the floors or ruffle seat cushions on rattan bar stools can add depth, interest and texture by layering textiles and mixing materials.

Eye-catching splashback. Go for something a little different as a splashback- whether a Moroccan patterned tile or a Verdigris copper metal finish, this is a great area to be creative.

Vintage accessories. Source antique or unique accessories, whether it’s tea caddies, copper pots or decorative plates, whatever you personally like. Displaying a collection of pieces is fun and eye-catching.

Biophilic design. At HollandGreen we are passionate about the environment and bringing well-being into our homes. Adding plants will give your kitchen a pop and forge a connection to outside. Plant some herbs in a vintage champagne bucket or have some aloe vera on hand for any kitchen burns.

Artisans of Devizes is

proud to unveil their SS24 Collections

Introducing the Artisans of Devizes Spring Summer Collection a wildly artisanal range which embraces a natural yet refined aesthetic across our interior and exterior stone, porcelain, decorative and terracotta options.

KEY FEATURES OF THE COLLECTION:

Indoor Outdoor: Blending outside and interior spaces seamlessly has never been more important as clients seek to extend the living areas of their projects. Because of this, we have selected five creamy limestones in a range of seasoned and tumbled finishes that are suitable for indoor and outdoor.

Glazed Beauties: Our Eastbury and Berber glazed ceramic tile ranges now have additional colours, such as deep reds and inky blacks. Each tile has a gentle undulation that brings a reflective nature to a space as well as a soft texture.

Terracotta Warmth: We have extended our Tetbury range of terracotta tiles to include new formats such as a smaller Bejmat tile and a classic Octagon and cabochon. We also introduce the Hague exterior terracotta in a parquet format – our first terracotta tile suitable for outdoor spaces.

“Blending outside and interior spaces seamlessly has never been more important as clients seek to extend the living areas of their projects”

Plaster Effect: Our Venetian plaster effect porcelain tiles come in seven colourways and are available in a generous 60x60cm format for contemporary spaces. The colour pallet features luxurious browns, greys, and off whites. artisansofdevizes.com
