Sophie was shown the original beautiful handbeaten copper still, before being taken to the newly converted cattle barn to see the magnificent new still which has five times the capacity, along with a new bottling line. A new collaboration of five multi-award winning vineyards have announced a special launch weekend on 8th and 9th June 2019, to celebrate the formation of a new English wine region - ‘Vineyards of the Surrey Hills’. The annual contest between two rowing crews from Oxford and Cambridge universities, is one of the oldest sporting rivalries, following a challenge between old school friends. The first ever Men’s Boat Race took place in 1829 in Henley on Thames. Since the second race in 1836 the contest has taken place in London. The first ever Women’s Boat Race took place in 1927 and moved to the Championship Course in 2015.

ome and get your hands dirty at Polesden Lacey this April 26 - 28. To celebrate our ‘Beyond the Scone’ programme we’re creating Polesden Lacey’s first ever Living Wall – and we’d love you to help us. Our Living Wall will represent the rich variety of life at Polesden Lacey and the dedication and specialist skills that go into keeping it special – for ever, for everyone. On these days you’ll be able to choose from one of the plants specially chosen to represent Polesden’s house, gardens or estate and add your own message - a wish, or a note to a loved one. Then plant it in the wall. Come back over the summer to see our green masterpiece flourish. The planting scheme was designed by Polesden Lacey’s garden volunteer and former garden intern, Judith McNickle. Plants were selected to highlight different aspects of Polesden Lacey: flowering plants represent the stunning formal gardens and will attract bees and butterflies. Striking ornamental grasses are included for our chalk grassland while lush foliage plants denote Polesden’s ancient woodlands. of the distillery. First to meet Sophie were bee farmer Sergio Pignagnoli and Barry Arminson and his daughter Marion who run Kingfisher Farm Shop. Sergio’s bees, kept in Albury Vineyard next to the distillery, produce the honey used in the gin and the farm shop supplies the distillery with fresh oranges and pears that are used in their award winning recipe. Sophie was also introduced to the people involved in designing the distinctive Silent Pool Gin branding and to members of staff. After unveiling the plaque to open the new expanded distillery, Sophie sampled a Silent Pool gin and tonic. Her smiles said it all! www.silentpooldistillers.com

THE LOST WORDS AT GATTON PARK I

nspired by evidence that children are no longer using words like ‘dandelion’ and ‘kingfisher’, award-winning author Robert Macfarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris, have created The Lost Words. Find out more at Gatton Park’s April Open Day - Sunday7th April. Follow a nature trail around the park to hear The Lost Words brought to life by Gatton Community Theatre. Park and gardens open all afternoon. Plant sale, craft activity, bird hide open. Refreshments available in Gatton Hall. Open 1-5pm. Adults £5, children free; no booking required. Gatton Park is supporting Lost Words for Surrey, a campaign to have a copy of the book in every primary school in the county. About The Lost Words In 2007 a well-known children’s dictionary, using established algorithms, found that children were no longer using words such as ‘acorn’, ‘conker’ and ‘otter’, instead words such as chatroom and blog were becoming increasingly popular. Reflecting this usage, and with a finite amount of space in the dictionary, these nature-based words were taken out to make space for those more commonly used words. Children were no longer talking about nature. By way of an answer to this, award winning author Robert Macfarlane and award winning author and illustrator Jackie Morris, got together to create a book celebrating these missing words.

The book explores twenty words including ‘kingfisher’, ‘heather’ and ‘newt’, each word has its own magicalacrostic spell and beautiful illustration. The hope is that The Lost Words will recapture children’s imaginations and stir in them a love and appreciation of wild places, plants and animals. In a 2008 National Trust survey, only a third of 8-11 year olds could name a magpie, and in a paper published in Science magazine, a group of 11 year olds had 80% accuracy at identifying Pokemon characters, and only 50% accuracy at identifying common species of British plants and animals. With evidence of an increasing disconnect between children and nature, it is more important than ever that they know and understand these words. If children do not feel connected to the natural world, they won’t feel concerned about it. If we can inspire a love of nature at a young age, it will last a lifetime! There have been several crowd-funding campaigns up and down the UK to raise enough money to get The Lost Words into schools. There is an illustrated map showing the areas where this has been successfully achieved. We would love to make Surrey part of this amazing movement. As well as the book, each school will receive a copy of ‘An Explorer’s Guide to the Lost Words’, a teaching resource which overlaps with the National Curriculum. WIN 2 tickets to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019

or many years Trailfinders has showcased at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show, having Australian-themed gardens for eight consecutive years, before taking a hiatus in 2013 after being awarded a ‘Gold Medal’ and the ultimate ‘Best in Show’ accolade. In 2018, Trailfinders made a big comeback reinvigorated and with new inspiration. The Trailfinders South African Wine Estate Show Garden, designed by Jonathan Snow, was a great success, and now both are back at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the 10th year. 2019 will see another part of the world on display with The Trailfinders ‘Undiscovered Latin America’ Garden. Inspired by the rainforests of South America, the garden is built on a steep slope and covered in lush, temperate planting that enjoys high rainfall, cool temperatures, and wet conditions underfoot. Dramatic waterfalls cascade into a pool, and a striking red walkway winds its way through the garden, around the waterfalls and among the planting. Some plants, such as the monkey puzzle tree have never been shown at Chelsea Flower Show before and it is also the first time Chile will be represented. The temperate rainforests of South America are under threat from urbanisation, over-farming and

We’re all going on a summer holiday – or are we? C

hristmas is over, Half-term has been and gone, Easter is right around the corner. You may even be planning your summer holiday. For those with children it can seem as if the countdown to the next school break is never-ending. For separated parents, this brings with it the risk of issues regarding the arrangements for the children which need to be discussed and agreed with the former spouse or partner. Indeed, what should be a time of leisure and excitement can often involve additional strain on many people when making arrangements to spend time with family and friends, especially if the whereabouts of the children during those times is yet to be agreed between the parents. Here are some thoughts and tips which may be useful when trying to agree arrangements for your children:

Communication There can often be a temptation to use the Holidays (particularly the first one after a separation) to make a point to your former partner or spouse about how well you and the children are doing following the separation. However, this is only likely to increase animosity between you and it is almost certain that it will not benefit the children. Therefore, my tip for communication during the holiday period is to keep it to a minimum, potentially with messages limited to dealing with the children’s arrangements only. Also, a simple message to the other parent when you have the children in your care about the children having a nice time should be fine but there is no need for the message to dwell on any other point or for it to imply that you or the children are not missing the other parent.

Arrangements for children For any parents thinking about the arrangements for their children over a holiday period, it is understandable if this feels difficult to address with your former spouse or partner. My first tip for dealing with children arrangements over any holiday period is to avoid any sense of competition. It can be all too easy to want to provide a ‘better’ Easter, Summer or even Christmas for your children, but as a parent your focus should be on what will make the holidays best for the children – and this likely involves quality time with both parents. For some parents, their arrangement means that they alternate Easter. Some parents may not have the ability to take the children on holiday. If you find yourself in such a situation, then try not to worry about this or feel ‘left-out’. Instead, try to make the most of your time with the children on the day(s) you will be spending with them. You can 32 APRIL 2019

even include a full repeat of Easter Day or at least a repeat of some of the activities. I suspect many children would not complain about having a second Easter-egg hunt!

Compromise Another tip is to be prepared to compromise on some aspects of the arrangements in order to reach an agreement with the other parent. You will no doubt each have your own wish list and it requires compromise on both sides to reach an agreement that works for both parties.

Legal advice Finally, if you are concerned about being able to reach an agreement with your former partner or spouse about the arrangements for the children over holiday periods or if discussions have not yet led to an agreement, then you may wish to consider taking legal advice about this. Your solicitor will also be able to consider with you the methods by which you may be able to negotiate a settlement with the other parent, including through solicitors, at mediation or, if necessary, by way of a Court application. We spoke to Tim and asked him “Why Vegan?” “In July 2017 a client asked me for my opinion on a Netflix documentary called ‘What the Health’, I watched it and haven’t touched meat or dairy since - NEVER will. Subsequently I have watched every documentary I can find, read numerous books and even completed an online diploma in plant based nutrition with Cornell University. I passionately believe that being vegan is the best lifestyle for your health, the planet and of course the animals and love nothing more than helping people make the transition as seamlessly and painlessly as possible.

Personally I have found that, despite being in my 40’s, I have never felt better - like every vegan I’ve ever met my only regret is not doing it sooner.” He explained to us that his goal is to simplify everything for clients and give them clear, concise advice on how to achieve their goals with sustainable results. It is all about aiding them in making permanent changes to their lifestyle which will leave them looking and feeling fantastic. He trains people at their homes all around the local area, providing all the equipment required . However, he feels the most important aspect of what he does is mentoring them with their 36 APRIL 2019

nutrition. He explains that most people are fine with adding a bit more exercise in to their week but it’s the food side that catches them out. Easter is coming Easter is coming, and so are the Easter Eggs! Which one will you choose this year? We went along to visit Chris Bachmann at his multi award winning Weybridge Patisserie in the search of the perfect egg. We asked him, “What makes a Bachmanns Egg so special?”

“A

ll our Easter Eggs and Bunnies are hand-made with love on the premises. There are a few reasons why I think that our Easter products are the best in the UK. First, we use one of the finest couvertures in the world, sourced from a small manufacturer in Switzerland. It not only eats well on its own, but marries perfectly with other flavours. Not only is the chocolate perfectly tempered and therefore beautifully shiny, but unlike factory made products, the chocolate is poured into the moulds, allowed to set, and then another molten layer of chocolate is added. When this layer sets, it creates a tension or fault line between the layers, which improves the “snap” of the chocolate when eaten. Last, we also hand sculpt our eggs, adding a final exterior textured layer, and by adding chocolate flowers and hand made buttons, each egg becomes an individual work of chocolate art. It is the repeated lamination that makes the eggs break up delicately before melting in the mouth, and that is what truly sets them apart. However, this takes a lot of skill, and we have a great team here under Wayne Harris our head Chef, and our choclatier Dan Ellis. Filled with either our legendary fresh cream truffles, or packed and encrusted with Crunchy Almond Rochers (baton almonds, macerated in cointreau, toasted with icing sugar over a hot flame, and mixed with melted chocolate and cocoa butter) our Eggs make an exquisite and unique gift for that special someone. We only make and stock our eggs for the three weeks between Mothers Day and Easter- that way we can pack them so that the products are super fresh and tasting their best- you know they haven’t been sitting around on a shelf in a warehouse for months and months. “In fact, a couple of Easters ago, one lucky lady opened her Bachmanns egg to find a diamond and platinum engagement nestling inside. Bachmanns were asked to pack the ring in its box into a truffle filled 800g dark chocolate egg so the suitor could propose in style on Easter day. “I must admit, I was quite relieved to get the ring and the egg back to the owner- it was a gorgeous piece of jewellery and I imagine it was extremely expensive. It was quite a compliment that we were trusted to look after it. pening in March 2019, Raymond Booth 1929 – 2015: Detailing Nature will combine exquisite paintings and studies to tell the little-known story of one of Britain’s most accomplished botanical, wildlife and natural history artists. The exhibition includes artworks uncovered by long-time friend, Peyton Skipwith – found when clearing Booth’s studio after his death – now on display for the first time. Seen together in Watts Contemporary Gallery, these works offer an insight into the practice and working life of a reclusive artist, a private man ‘immersed in his own world of poetry, plant cultivation, and [...] natural history’. Co-curated by Skipwith, expert on Booth and former Director of the Fine Art Society of London, Detailing Nature will tell the story of Booth’s remarkable career, much of which was spent in his private studio at home in Alwoodley – an ‘inner sanctuary’, which no one besides the artist was permitted to enter. Despite rarely leaving his native Yorkshire, Booth developed an international reputation as a leading botanical and natural history artist. Booth’s meticulous rendering of wildlife, woodlands, meadows and heathland found admiration far beyond the bounds of his beloved Adel Woods, where he spent much of his time studying and refining his technique. A plantsman as well as an artist, Booth would cultivate flowers, plants and botanical specimens at home in the garden before painting them in the studio. It was through this extensive and painstaking process that Booth developed an expert knowledge of his subject, a defining feature of his work. “Nothing delighted him more than the freedom to put a few basic requirements in a backpack and

explore the countryside, sleeping under hedgerows or in woodland, and developing his intimacy with bird and animal life.” Peyton Skipwith Booth was born and raised in Roundhay, northeast Leeds, and attended Leeds College of Art. After contracting tuberculosis while on National Service in Egypt, Booth was sent to a sanatorium, where he wiled away the hours honing his craft and began producing the botanical studies for which he is now best known. In 1992, Booth published the much-cited Japonica Magnifica in collaboration with American botanist, Don Elick. Raymond Booth’s work is held internationally in major public collections, including the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Ulster Museum, The Hunt Institute in Pittsburgh, the Shirley Sherwood Gallery at Kew, and Leeds City Art Gallery, as well as many private collections in Europe, America, Japan and the Middle East. Booth was represented by The Fine Art Society until his death in 2015.

In accordance with Raymond Booth’s wishes, proceeds from the sale of the works from his estate, after all costs, will be divided between The Woodland Trust, Plant Life International and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. These charities represent causes close to the heart of Watts Gallery’s founders, G F and Mary Watts; G F Watts was an Associate of the Society of the Protection of Birds (appointed 1898), and allowed his painting, A Dedication, to feature on an 1899 Society pamphlet against the plumage trade. Proceeds from the sale of work also directly benefit Watts Gallery Trust’s learning and outreach programme, which has over 29,000 participations each year. A new look for Cranleigh School C

ranleigh’s dedicated boarding community is enjoying a period of new building and refurbishment across all ages, enhancing the boarding facilities across both campus. The Prep School’s beautiful new academic building, Townsend, houses Design, Art and Food Tech facilities and the boarding houses will soon be enhanced and expanded to meet increased demand. More dormitory spaces will be added and a refurbishment programme will create leisure and social spaces for pupils to enjoy together. Last year the senior school opened a new girls’ boarding house, Rhodes, and work is well underway on the fourth girls’ house, Martlet, which opens in August. Good mental health and wellbeing for pupils is paramount Mike Lamb, Director of Staff and Pupil Wellbeing/Head of Year 9 at Hurst College tells us how good mental health and wellbeing for pupils is paramount, especially around the key transition periods

ost people would agree that good mental health and wellbeing is the basis for a happy and successful life at school and beyond. At Hurst this is at the core of what they do and which they consider is especially important around the key transition times. Moving schools can be a challenging experience for pupils and it is important for schools to work closely together to ensure a successful transition. This process begins at Hurst well before a pupil joins them. They invite key staff from their feeder prep schools to witness first-hand how they teach the key subjects and to share ideas and best practice – they also work closely with the respective heads to determine how best to support each pupil when they join. In addition, current pupils return to their prep schools to share their experiences about what it was like when they joined. Hurst hosts a special two-day event, with an overnight for boarders, in the March before Year 9 pupils join, and they take part in a variety of activities and challenges to acquire a real taste for life at Hurst. It is a fantastic experience which helps pupils to familiarise themselves with their new school, make new friends and meet their teachers.

New Year 9 pupils start the school year before any other year groups for a three-day induction programme. This allows staff to focus on supporting new pupils before the school is full again and helps with orientation and a sense of belonging. This is not - and should not - be the end of supporting the transition. There are a number of teambuilding and bonding experiences in the first few weeks, such as a multi-activity day, which involves abseiling, zip wire, pot-holing and the like. Hurst believes that a busy, challenging, engaging and rewarding day and weekly timetable is vital in order for a pupil to successfully settle. The school day is packed with learning and activities - plus there is the opportunity to exercise during three 54 APRIL 2019

games sessions each week, either through team sports such as rugby and netball, or alternatives such as climbing, gym or triathlon. All Year 9 pupils also take part in drama, dance, PE and there is an activities afternoon each Tuesday – with everything from football to shooting - plus enrichment activities later in the week, which could involve dismantling a Dyson vacuum, developing travel writing skills or learning Mandarin Chinese. The recently developed Year 9 wellbeing programme was designed to provide pupils with a quieter moment in the middle of the week. On a carousel over the year, pupils are able to develop some mindfulness techniques, practice yoga and also spend time on the college farm, plus they learn how to make fires and shelters in the surrounding woods. Through their diverse and varied curriculum, Hurst believes pupils will thrive and develop the life skills they need to achieve their personal bests. Combined with a robust tutorial programme this helps develop other attributes such as effective study skills, an understanding of the world around them and how to maintain good relationships with others, which stands them in good stead for life beyond Hurst. Tutors meet regularly with the pupils in their care, to identify the type of support required, and the school works closely with parents to help pupils achieve their potential. Later this year, Hurst will be launching their inaugural Wellbeing Conference when local schools will be invited to join them for presentations and discussions about good mental health and transition between schools. www.hppc.co.uk

lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time 56 APRIL 2019

to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. Interview with the new Headmistress of Notre Dame Prep School - Mrs Amélie Morgan Mrs Morgan joined Notre Dame Prep School as Headmistress in January 2019, having previously been Deputy Head at St George’s in Weybridge What are your thoughts as you come to the end of your first month as Headmistress? I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to take on this role at Notre Dame and so far I have not been disappointed. The staff, parents and children could not have been more welcoming and I feel that I have joined a really exciting and dynamic community. What makes you smile everyday about your job? I think seeing the children taking advantage of all the amazing opportunities they have with such joy and enthusiasm. Whether they are enjoying their lessons, running outside to play netball or hockey, singing in the Chapel or acting in our wonderful theatre – they embrace everything with a real ‘cando’ attitude and are so supportive of each other. It is lovely to see. What are the challenges you face in your role as Headmistress? To continue to live up to the aspirations of our foundress, St Jeanne de Lestonnac. Having visited her birth place in Bordeaux last October I was able to understand her passion for educating girls and, although 400 years have passed, her indomitable spirit and drive to deliver the best still inspires us every day. My personal goal is to ensure that every child fulfils their potential in every aspect of school life.

What do you think are the key factors to getting a good education? We believe that happy children make good learners and this drives everything we do at Notre Dame. Our pastoral care is embedded at the heart of our curriculum and we get to know every child and give them all the tools they need to maximise their learning potential. Physical exercise is also high on our list; not only does it improve general health and mental well-being but is critical to a happy school life. It supports learning, improves behaviour and encourages positive social interaction and empathy. We are lucky to have fantastic facilities including our state-of-the-art all-weather sports pitches and, this year, we will be enhancing our field sports and cross country offering with newly acquired land. All our pupils from the youngest two year-olds in Nursery to Year 6, have timetabled PE lessons every week, taught by specialist PE and Swimming Teachers. Privately Educated People Dominate Top British jobs

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives. In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

From picking suitable species to ensuring your pond is safe, Hannah Stephenson runs through some key points to consider before you start.

opefully the ice on your pond should now have melted, so it may soon be time to think about stocking it with suitable fish. The best time to buy them is when the water temperature is rising and has reached about 10C (50F) - but which are the best buys?

Here’s what you need to know... Choose a suitable fish Among the most popular, exotic and expensive are koi carp, which are classified by scale types, patterns and colours. But be warned, if you want to keep koi well, your pond must be large and deep, with crystal clear water. Koi and other carp can grow to 75cm or more and some are worth thousands of pounds, so you may want to consider how secure the pond is before splashing out. A less adventurous option is the common goldfish, which is easily bred and generally no longer than 15cm, ideal for most ponds, and will tolerate water as warm as 35C (95F), although not for long periods. There are also fancy types of goldfish with enlarged heads and big, bubble-eyes, but many don’t tolerate extremes in temperature, such as freezing weather or prolonged periods of heat. Orfe, rudd and roach are also popular choices, although as many spend a lot of their time near the surface, you may need to protect your pond with netting to stop cats and herons from taking them. Go to a reputable supplier who will allow you to examine and pick out your fish. The healthiest 86 APRIL 2019

ones should have bright eyes and a sturdy body, with a stout dorsel fin. Fish with missing or damaged scales are best avoided, as the exposed tissue beneath the scales may be prone to fungal infection. But do remember not to mix exotic with native species, or you’ll have a fight on your hands. Sticklebacks, for instance, will eat every goldfish egg as it’s laid. Keep your pond healthy Whichever fish you choose, the general rule for keeping them healthy is to have well-oxygenated water, varying depths, and sufficient food, shade and shelter. Get plants established and make sure the water is clear before you introduce the fish.

A well-planted pond should ensure goldfish can acquire most of the food they need, although some additional feeding will be necessary. If you have a wildlife pond, be aware that this is likely to attract other creatures, including predators such as herons and kingfishers, so the fish you choose should match the environment. In this instance, it may be wise to avoid highly coloured ornamental varieties and go for native species which are cheaper to replace, such as dace, roach and rudd. Remember that fish can be fussy Some fish don’t like clear water - carp will disturb mud at the bottom of a pond to make it murky and camouflage them. And when buying fish, remember that they feed at different water levels. Koi feed at a minimum depth of 3ft (1m), so avoid shallow pools, while orfe are active surface-feeders, which can grow to 45cm or larger and are unsuitable for small ponds. Don’t overfill the pond The number of fish you have in your pond depends on its size. Surface area determines how much oxygen is available to them, so work out how many fish you can accommodate by following this general rule: multiply the average length of the pond by its average width, to give you the surface area. Apply a general rule of 1in of fish to each square

foot - that’s 25cm of fish per square metre. If in doubt, take advice from reputable pond and aquatic centres. It’s better to have too few fish than too many. Keep the water oxygenated Deep water ponds also retain a more regular temperature and more dissolved oxygen during warm weather. If your fish dart about, it may be that they have become stressed because your pond is too shallow or there are not enough corners for them to hide. You can keep fish in a pond without plants, but most gardeners prefer to add some aquatic greenery to make the area seem more natural. And don’t worry about algae, because this provides a vital breeding ground for insects on which fish can feed. Fish should be fed around twice a day in summer, but don’t overfeed them. In winter the feeding can be cut down. And in hot weather, top up the pool with a hosepipe or turn on the pool pump to circulate the water more efficiently and create more oxygen. Acclimatise the fish To acclimatise fish to a pond, it’s best to buy them small. They are generally transported from aquatic centres in plastic bags. To help them adapt to the lower temperature of the pond, sink the unopened bag into the pond for an hour or so, adding a small amount of pond water, then you can gently open it to release the fish. Private Aquariums & Water Features should be a work of art reflecting the client’s tastes. Often when we install aquariums into hotels or private parties, I often stand back and take note of how many people stop and stare, I know I have done fine work if most people stand mesmerised by the fish and design forgetting the moment for a while. We once installed an aquarium in Jersey for a temporary exhibit at a private party. The room had magnificent Dali and Picasso paintings hung on the walls – but it was the aquarium that got the most attention out of everything, we incorporated a diamond encrusted Tyrannosaurus rex bone as the main feature. One of our most ambitious projects was for a Russian client who instructed us to build a trout fishing lake in his garden – we achieved this by building a replica fifty meter stretch of his favourite river – The Test in Hampshire. The pumps we incorporated, filtration system and extensive knowledge of aquatic habitats ensured a successful project. The client used it so often for fishing we ended up building him a bespoke cabin on the side complete with kitchen so he could have his chef cook the trout he caught.

DIVE DOWN INTO A BASEMENT POOL Building a pool into your basement is very en vogue, extremely popular amongst the rich and famous

helsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich, Formula 1 heiress Tamara Ecclestone, and steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal are among those that have dabbled with basement extensions in recent years. If you have dreamt of having a home swimming pool and don’t fancy the idea of going for an outdoor swim in the middle of winter, then a basement pool is your answer. Of course, there is no upper limit on what can be spent and some pools are the absolute height of luxury and sophistication. There are very few places in your property that are suitable for pool installations, other than basements. Most basements provide the perfect setting, with concrete floors and being at the bottom of the property you do not have to worry about the weight a pool would put on the ceiling of the room below. Some build an extension to house their swimming pool, but there is nothing more luxurious with that extra wow factor than a basement pool. The design of basement pools can be equally indulgent, extravagant and indeed, delightful. Depending on your taste, you might have an underground grotto with cave-like stonewalls and a waterfall running into a spa beside the pool. You might be attracted by the idea of marble columns and arched ceilings in the style of the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul or you might go for a modern, graphic approach.

You need to make sure you don’t cut corners when it comes to damp proofing your basement pool, as this will be your biggest challenge. Many people have problems with damp after they have installed a swimming pool, but don’t be put off by horror stories you may hear - ensure you employ an accredited builder to fit your swimming pool and that they have had experience in converting basements for swimming pools in the past. A basement is the perfect place for a pool, whether it’s a five-metre training pool or a 25-metre high-spec infinity pool. Professional designers can create a swimming pool of any shape and size to fit your space and your needs; with a specialist team who will then install your pool, and include any finishing touches such as tiling, wet rooms, and lighting. Working below ground is a specialist area and there are some specific regulations that apply. All floors and walls that are below ground level need to be waterproofed, or ‘tanked’ as it is sometimes called. Existing walls may have to be underpinned and additional joists and steelwork might need to be installed in order to support your property above. You will almost certainly have to ensure that there is a suitable fire escape from the basement, an adequate ventilation system and insulation to comply with building regulations. Different councils can ask different things of you when it comes to a basement conversion, so it is important that you speak to them before you plan or start any work.

Palaces Tapestry art has adorned the homes of the rich since the Middle Ages. Today everyone can still enjoy the beautiful tapestries available from Historic Royal Palaces. A channel sewn into the back allows for easy hanging from a tapestry pole.

The Arming and Departure of the Knights tapestry Measuring 1.05 metre by 70cm this exquisite tapestry would brighten the wall of any room with its colourful image inspired by the Holy Grail tapestry series designed by Edward Burne-Jones in 1890 and originally woven by Morris & Company. The Arming and Departure of the Knights tapestry is the second scene in the series and it depicts the ladies of King Arthur’s Court assisting the knights in preparation for their quest. On the far left of the tapestry, Queen Guinevere hands Sir Lancelot his shield and Sir Gawaine, who fails the quest, is seen on the far right of the tapestry. A richly vibrant mille-fleur of golds, burgundies, greens and blues on a striking black background surround the figures. Price: £325.

Knights Templar - Templier Tapestry This is a depiction of a Templar, of the Knights Templar, the medieval period military order responsible for protecting the Holy Grail. Templars played a key part in the Crusades of the Middle Ages and are believed to be the pioneers of modern banking. This particular tapestry features a Knight Templar and the Krak des Chevaliers, or the ‘Fortress of the Knights’, one of the most famous medieval castles in the world. Measures 62cm x 48cm. Lady and the Unicorn tapestry – sense of smell This beautiful tapestry has been inspired by The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries woven in Flanders in the 15th century. Lady and the Unicorn tapestry - my one sole desire This beautiful tapestry has been inspired by The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries woven in Flanders in the 15th century. The sixth tapestry represents love. In this tapestry a lady stands before a tent with her handmaiden holding a chest beside her. The lady is placing the necklace she has worn into the chest. The lion and the unicorn frame the lady and on top of the tent is written ‘À Mon Seul Désir’ which means ‘my one sole desire’. The original tapestries are considered one of the greatest works of art of the Middle Ages. Measures 49cm x 70cm. Price: £125.

Unicorn Tapestries - captive unicorn tapestry This beautiful tapestry has been inspired by the Unicorn Tapestries or The Hunt of the Unicorn woven at the end of the 15th century in the Netherlands. The tapestries were probably made for Anne of Brittany to celebrate her marriage to Louis XII, King of France. This tapestry illustrates the final in the series, The Captive Unicorn. In the tapestry the unicorn is tethered to a tree and constrained by a fence. It is important to note that the chain is not secure and the fence is low. The unicorn could escape if it wished to but is happy in its confinement. The pomegranates in the tree above are medieval symbols of fertility and friendship and other plants in the scene such as the thistle and wild orchid represent themes of love, marriage and procreation. Visitors will be encouraged to use refillable bottles and water points at the show’s cafes. Also not to be missed is the new interiors feature – The Under the Stairs Project, which

will see eight interior designers showcase bespoke installations, using a commonly neglected area in the home. Visitors can browse and pick up inspirations for their own mini grand designs. Judges for this exciting new competition will include Kevin McCloud and Jenny Gibbs from the KLC School of Design. Established favourites such as Kevin’s Green Heroes will showcase the most ground-breaking and eco-friendly products on the market, and the popular Ask An Expert returns with a host of inspiring and informative seminars at The Grand Theatre . As part of the linking between Grand Designs Live and National Custom and Self Build Week, talks and an expert clinic focusing on Self-Build will take place on weekdays, including topics themed around ‘Busting the myths of Self-Build’. Grand Designs Live feels strongly that supporting this initiative is important as the UK has a much lower rate of self-building than other European countries. NaCSBA and Grand Designs Live will hold a parliamentary reception on 7th May in The Houses of Parliament. This invitation-only event will be hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Self-Build, Custom & Community Housebuilding & Placemaking with the likes of The Housing Minister Kit Malthouse, Richard Bacon MP and Kevin McCloud will be in attendance.
