Commemorating a Decade of Style, Fashion, Music and Vehicles
U
tilising every available inch of the historic Brooklands site in Surrey, this event celebrates the fashion, music, style, cars and attitudes that this decade is renowned for. Importantly, the organisers have seen an increase over recent years in the interest in the immediate post-War period and how the fashions and cars from that time flourished after 6 years of hardship and really influenced the early 1950s. The centre of focus will be the dance marquee with a rolling programme of music and FREE dance classes. Any ladies not able to finesse their look need not worry as a vintage hair and make-up parlour will be set up in the original Press
Hut. The trade village will feature sellers of original and quality reproduction clothing, home wares and ephemera from the era and the star attraction will undoubtedly be a Classic Commercial Vehicle display alongside the scores of re-enactor groups portraying everything from the Home Guard, RAF and Land Army Girls to civilian and family life. Who will win the Brooklands Best-Dressed Competition this year? Don your finest period duds, grab your partner and watch out for the sartorial scouts looking for the UK’s finest outfits. Vintage specialist Swing Shift will be providing the sounds and singing live will be chanteuse Noelle Vaughn well known as being one of the most authentic singers on the circuit – close your eyes and you’ll think you’re listening to the wireless…

Albury Vineyard FINE WINES FROM THE SURREY HILLLS
N
estled in the heart of the Surrey Hills, Albury Vineyard is the result of Nick Wenman’s passion for quality wine. Nick planted the vineyard in 2009 having retired from the IT industry to fulfil his dream of owning a vineyard. With English Sparkling now winning international competitions ahead of Champagne, Nick’s vision was to produce bubbly of the highest quality. However it was Albury’s still rosé that achieved early success with the first vintage served on the Royal Barge to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Nick believes that key to the success of the wines is the vineyard’s commitment to organic and biodynamic principles, together with excellent winemakers and a talented vineyard manager. Alex gained her doctorate in horticulture in Milan and previously worked at vineyards in Italy, New Zealand and RHS Wisley. Running an organic vineyard is no easy task but Albury has gained a reputation for producing excellent wine. Last year, their Silent Pool Rosé was the only Surrey wine awarded a coveted UK Vineyard Association gold award. Wonderful wine has led to popularity amongst locals, many of whom are members of the Albury Wine Club. The vineyard welcomes helps from the community during the harvest when an army of members enjoy a morning picking grapes followed by a well-deserved glass of wine. Amongst the crew is Nick’s daughter Lucy, a recent addition to the team. Having a family business is something that excites Nick, who
planted two rows of vines especially for his wife, now famous for her Linda’s Pinot. Producing sparkling wine in England requires patience. Six years after planting, Albury first released sparkling wines last year. Albury Estate bubbly is dry, elegant and quintessentially English. With Albury wines now served at country pubs, fine dining eateries and local wine bars, wine lovers can enjoy “A Glass of Albury” knowing that it has been produced by those passionate about quality wine. It’s hard not to be taken in by Nick’s enthusiasm, and a weekend visit to the Surrey countryside is not complete without a trip to the vineyard itself. The organic vines sit alongside the mystical Silent Pool, a lake of crystal clear water where, according to local legend, a beautiful maiden drowned escaping the clutches of King John, and now haunts the Silent Pool. It’s a popular spot for walkers who are welcomed at the vineyard along with ‘children, muddy boots and dogs’. Divert from the footpath into the vineyard and you are rewarded with a glass of wine to enjoy outside, or a vineyard tour from Nick or Alex who seize the chance to share their knowledge and passion. he world’s No1 Frank Sinatra, Stephen Triffitt, is coming to town to celebrate the golden anniversary of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ most famous recording – Sinatra Live at the Sands. A brand-new production called Frankly Sinatra features many of the songs from the classic album, performed just the way they were back in 1966. Regarded as the definitive Sinatra live performance, the album was Frank’s first commercially-released live recording, packed with 22 tracks including many of his best-known hits. Frankly Sinatra’s producers say that authenticity can be assured: star of the show – Stephen Triffitt – has himself enjoyed three seasons at Las Vegas’ Sands Casino portraying Frank. Featuring the swing, swagger and the velvet vocals of Frank Sinatra in concert, Stephen Triffitt is acclaimed worldwide as the master of his craft. He created the role of Ol’ Blue Eyes in the original West End production of The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas that toured the USA, Canada and Europe. The lavish production is brought to the stage by Easy Theatres, the theatre show specialists responsible for hit touring stage productions like Magic of Motown, Thank You for the Music, An Evening of Burlesque and A Night of Dirty Dancing. The company’s MD, Michael Taylor, says Sinatra’s golden anniversary is to be celebrated in “swinging style” with a nationwide tour of brand-new stage show Frankly Sinatra in 2016. “There’s no better Sinatra,” says Michael. “Stephen Triffitt has sold out the London Palladium twice and the Royal Festival Hall with solo concert shows. “In Frankly Sinatra he skilfully dips in and out of character

to tell the fascinating tale of the greatest vocalist and most charismatic performer of our time.” The critics agree. The London Evening Standard describes Stephen’s resemblance to Sinatra as ”unsettlingly perfect”. With sculpted hair, twinkling blue eyes, and shiny black patent leather shoes, Stephen is famed for performing classic hits Fly Me to the Moon; Mack the Knife; New York, New York; My Way; That’s Life; Under My Skin; Lady is a Tramp; My Kind of Town; All the Way and Luck Be a Lady with all Frank’s laid back charm. Michael says: “Stephen not only walks the walk, he talks the talk. Combining delicious vocals with a playful, laid-back stage presence, he faithfully recreates Frank’s trademark stage persona with consummate ease.” Backed by the sound of big band swing, Frankly Sinatra brings the Chairman of the Board to town to celebrate the golden anniversary of Sinatra Live at the Sands with StephenTriffitt, described by the show’s creators as “frankly the best thing since Sinatra himself ”. ward winning performer and writer Amy Gwilliam and West End director Sophie Larsmon arrive at Guildford Fringe and return to their roots in Guildford with this brave and wacky comedy about Death! Mummy is a cathartic and corrosively funny new play about a young woman who has shrouded herself in studies to numb the pain of grieving. Returning to her secondary school as a publicity stunt to launch her first book “MUMMY or the Art of Saying Goodbye”, she is confronted with the spectre of her dead mother and her 16-year-old self, irritating stifled wounds and unwinding her suppressed pain. The show is semi-autobiographical; a homage to Amy’s own mother, television and film director Liddy Oldroyd, who was born and bred in Guildford, and died in 2002. Amy Gwilliam says ‘Sophie and I met on our first day at Guildford High School back in 1997. In the years that would follow we would perform in, and devise, many productions together, culminating in co-directing the Panto in our final year!’ Amy continues. ‘This creation has been no less wonderful and marks the beginning of (I hope!) many future projects together.’ Mummy runs from Tuesday 26th April through to Saturday 30th April with a show each evening at 8pm and a 3pm matinée on the Friday. It will be performed at The Back Room of The Star Inn, Quarry Street, Guildford. ‘I am over the moon to be welcoming Amy and Sophie back to their home town and to work with them on a great piece of theatre’ says Nick Wyschna, Artistic Director at Guildford Fringe. ‘It is always a challenge to find the right piece to put on so when I met Amy at a theatre networking event in London it was a wonderful moment when things just started to fall into place. HAM HOUSE IN MINIATURE
They are incredibly lucky to have a very special house on display at the Festival in May. The latest project by Mulvany & Rogers is a copy of Ham House, which they are creating for an international collector. They have had unique access to the National Trust property that overlooks the Thames, which has enabled them to recreate the house as it was in its heyday. They have collaborated with many of our regular KDF exhibitors including Geoff Wonnacott, Jens Torp, Leslie Smith + many more. This will be a unique opportunity to view the house up close & chat with its creators. It is going to be spectacular.
PERFECTION IN MINIATURE AWARDS
KDF are hosting the PIMAs again. These were launched last year & were a huge hit with the craftsmen & visitors to the show. All KDF exhibitors are eligible to enter & we are looking for something really special. There were some incredible entries last year (The winner was Lawrence St Leger & his absurdly brilliant, 7 blade, fully working Swiss Army pen knife). All entries will be on display & for sale at the show.. The International Guild of Miniature Artisans( IGMA) are organising some superb workshops taking place in Kensington in the run up to the show. An education tailored for boys
T
he town of Guildford is bucking a national trend which continues to be at the heart of heated educational discussion in the press and social media. A row over single-sex education has again flared up with the suggestion that students at single-sex institutions are at a huge disadvantage living in a deeply unrealistic world and, as such, all-boys and allgirls schools are educational dinosaurs. The number of single-sex schools continues to drop and yet the RGS remains proud to have offered boys-only education in the centre of Guildford for over 500 years, an education which not only allows boys to emerge with exceptional results but also to develop into confident, grounded, thoroughly decent individuals. The smooth coexistence with the neighbouring girls schools means that RGS boys get the very best of both worlds: an education tailored for boys where the teaching and support are geared specifically to the learning style of boys without gender stereotype, prejudice or distraction, while in every other way allowing the boys – with the freedom which a town-centre school affords – to enjoy healthy and normal interaction with girls in the academic, artistic, extracurricular and social spheres. This media storm has coincided with a time when, if justification were required with regard to perceived disadvantages, the RGS can justifiably claim to be proud of its past, its present and its future. Our Old Guildfordians continue to flourish on the national and international stages: Jack Clifford (OG11) is part of Eddie Jones’s new-look England rugby squad for the Six Nations; Angus Goodwin (OG06) won the prestigious Turner Prize as founder
4 2 APRIL 2 0 1 6
member of art, architecture and design collective Assemble for his work on a Liverpool housing estate; Tom Griffiths (OG09), in the presence of The Prince of Wales, was awarded the Sword of Honour at the Sovereign’s Parade; Giles Hutchings (OG13) has been participating in the Champion of Champions tournament on Channel 4’s Countdown. The current Upper Sixth Form has just received 38 Oxbridge offers: the second highest ever for the School and a record for the RGS for Cambridge offers with 25. The future looks equally exciting and recently we have been delighted to welcome prospective students from Prep and Primary Schools – impressive in both number and calibre alike – who sat our 11+ entrance examinations. There are great schools which are single-sex or co-educational, which are day or boarding, which are independent or maintained: the important thing is not, however, the label but an institution in which pupils are happy, have the scope to flourish and grow, and where they can fulfil their potential. It is in this light that we continue to be proud of all those boys who have worn, continue to wear and will wear in the future, the RGS blazer. UK parents among
‘the strictest in Europe’
B
ritish parents are among the strictest in Europe after a study has revealed they are more reluctant to let their children play and travel unsupervised. Worried parents in England restrict their child’s ability to play and travel without adult supervision more than their European counterparts, the research found. The study revealed parents are mainly worried about the potential danger from road traffic and going out in the dark and it followed calls from leading teachers to expose children to more genuine risk. Researchers compared children’s independent mobility in 16 countries worldwide based on a survey of over
children to use daylight hours and prevent road deaths. Ben Shaw, Director of Policy Studies Institute, said: “ Allowing children the freedom to get about in their local area unaccompanied by adults has been found to be important for their health and physical, mental and social development. Yet we have found that children around the world have significant restrictions placed on their freedom to get about – to go to school, to visit friends, and get to places to play. “Children’s freedom of movement has declined in recent decades and danger from traffic is the main reason parents give for not letting their children out by themselves.
Researchers compared children’s independent mobility in 16 countries worldwide based on a survey of over 18,000 children 18,000 children aged 7 - 15 from 2010 to 2012. Carried out by the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) at the University of Westminster, it found that children’s ability to travel and play in their local area unsupervised by adults varies widely with England in seventh place compared to more lenient countries like Germany and Finland. The only European countries from the sample that allow children of any age to go out after dark are Finland, Sweden and Denmark, the study funded by the Nuffield Foundation revealed. Separately, England held the seventh place in the ranking, positioning parents as among the less lenient in Europe. The report recommended a reduction of car dependency and a change in Daylight Saving Time to allow
4 4 APRIL 2 0 1 6
We are struck by how this significant danger and major restriction on children, is routinely accepted given the health and developmental benefits independent mobility has been shown to result in. “While restrictions on children’s freedom have increased, our research has looked at how this situation can be turned around. “We have found some shining examples of cities such as Rotterdam and Vancouver which have been inspired to place children at the centre of their development; on the basis that if a city works for children it works for everyone. “However, if the benefits of these approaches are to be enjoyed in the UK, the needs of children must be given much greater priority by decision makers working in the policy areas of planning, development and transport.

‘Private schools should be praised for producing influential people’
C
A study by Debrett’s, the etiquette experts, reveals that two-fifths of the 500 most powerful and influential people in Britain went to private schools
rucially this cuts across all spheres of influence, including not only traditional careers, like business and politics, but areas like architecture and acting too: witness the amazing global success of Eton-educated Eddie Redmayne, still only 33, as Professor Stephen Hawking, in The Theory of Everything. Of course private schools are always going to produce far more than their fair share of Society’s most powerful “players”. This is inevitable, given the fact that most successful people educate their own children privately; thus the system is guaranteed to be perpetuated, with success breeding success. For example, high-flying parents will have all the key contacts, whether in commerce or theatre, to help ensure their own offspring have that first, vital helping hand up the career ladder. Work experience slots inevitably go to the children of top business people or lawyers, for example as inevitably their parents have the contacts to find precious openings. And anyone who has been to a private school, whether big or small, famous or not so famous, will know that there will be many such high-achieving parents. Their added
4 6 APRIL 2 0 1 6
influence opens doors more easily and, crucially, other pupils can also benefit from their contacts. For example, successful parents are often instrumental in prompting high-profile acquaintances to visit schools as speakers: spending time with pupils and offering invaluable advice on “How to succeed” in the process. That way, everyone benefits from their expertise. This is indeed how the system works on a termly basis: little nudges here and there, but nothing too blatant or nepotistic. Private schools are exceedingly good at producing successful pupils…

ACM Alumnus Newton Faulkner returns in partnership with Eagle 3 to give a masterclass and performance
“It definitely gave me more information on the business side than I would of had otherwise because I had a lot of very confused friends - I became a central point of information for a little while (laughes). But yeah just playing stuff, friends, I mean I’m working with a drummer that I met whilst I was here. So yeah all kinds of contacts and stuff it’s amazing!” - Newton Faulkner on his ACM experience (ACM Alumnus)
E
arlier this year, the Academy Of Contemporary music (in partnership with Eagle3) welcomed back alumnus Newton Faulkner for a performance and masterclass as part of their much-anticipated ‘Odeon Sessions’. Presenting the session was Eagle Radio presenter Stuart Provan. Starting with an interview that covered the music business, his latest album and his time at ACM, all with many anecdotes along the way, the session was then followed by a Q & A session with the students who were thoroughly engaged throughout. Newton played three songs during the masterclass and even did an ad hoc and unplanned performance of ‘Gone In The Morning’ for a student fan who’d not heard the track live before. Graduating from ACM with a Higher Diploma in performance specialising in guitar, Newton has since gone on to achieve platinum status for his music. The Academy is extremely proud of its contributions to Newton’s musical education. Remembering his time at ACM fondly, Newton revealed that hit ‘I Need Something’ was actually penned on a lunch break between lectures by the riverside next to The Electric Theatre. During the masterclass, Newton mentioned that prior to auditioning for ACM, he was turned down by the BRIT School ; proof that you can’t give up at the first hurdle in this tough business - a message that ACM teaches all students passing through its doors.
4 8 APRIL 2 0 1 6
Newton’s visit to ACM was a complete success and students left having learned a great deal about how they can follow in Newton Faulkner’s footsteps. At the same time as the Academy welcomed Newton back to speak to the next generation of talented students, it also announced that from September 2016, all diploma courses will be free of charge to students under 19 years old. This is a move to ensure that all young people have equal opportunities to access education and pursue their career aspirations, regardless of their background or social standing. ProSkin SPRING Body Blitz! It’s that time of year when the hemlines are shorter and more skin is on show. Whether you want to lose inches or tackle cellulite; 3D lipo could be the solution to all of your body contouring needs!
J
ust like the name suggests, 3D lipo takes a truly three dimensional approach to weight loss and body sculpting. The treatment encompasses a range of individual, but complementary technologies, which work together to permanently remove stubborn fat, reduce the appearance of cellulite and tighten the skin.
Cellulite Reduction
Cellulite reduction treatment, known as ‘Dermology,’ involves two complementary treatments, which are available individually or as part of a wider treatment programme. 3D Dermology involves rolling the skin with special rollers. During treatment, a vacuum roller applies firm, but comfortable, pressure to the treated area to stimulate blood flow. Vacuum suction then removes depleted fat cells through the lymphatic system and radio frequency treatment tightens the skin. Increased blood flow also increases the oxygen supply to the treated area, stimulating the regeneration of healthy, smooth skin. This type of treatment can be particularly beneficial to patients with naturally sluggish lymphatic systems.
Inch Loss
ProSkin Clinics use two techniques, known as ultrasound Cavitation and Cryolipolysis, to help you
lose weight and inches quickly. As the name suggests, ultrasound cavitation uses ultrasonic waves to break down fat cells, allowing their contents to be naturally removed from the body. Cryolipolysis, on the other hand, uses low temperatures, or cryotherapy, to freeze a percentage of the cells in the treated area in a controlled way to achieve the same effect. Both treatments are highly effective at removing fat from problem areas, such as the affectionately named, but undesirable ‘bingo wings’, ‘love handles’ or ‘muffin top, in comfort and safety.
Skin Tightening
The exposure of the skin to radio frequency waves creates a heating effect, which causes the fibres of protein, known as collagen, to contract. The heating effect also stimulates the growth of new collagen fibres, so the result is an immediate tightening effect. Radio frequency treatment is ideal for improving the appearance of sagging skin on the face, arms, stomach or thighs. Dermal Fillers
As we get older, we lose collagen and elasticity in the area between the top of the cheek and the lower eye. This can cause tear troughs to become deeper and longer which can make us look older and tired. However, we have a fantastic solution in tear trough filler injections. Carefully administered by one of our highly-trained Doctors dermal filler injections replenish the natural collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin. At the Light Touch Clinic we believe in replacing lost volume, not adding volume that wasn’t there in the first place. You will the leave the clinic looking bright-eyed and rejuvenated.
Packed with retinol and antioxidants, ZO Hydrafirm Eye Brightening Repair Crème is a favourite with our staff and clients alike. This fab cream helps improve skin’s elasticity, calms any puffiness and reduces the appearance of fine lines. Due to the product’s strong ingredients, you will need to come in for a consultation with one of our Doctors first. The Dr Levy Eye Booster Concentrate is a smooth, hydrating formula which uses a unique cocktail of potent ingredients to rejuvenate the skin. The superstar ingredient in this product is Argan CDV, a stem cell activator derived from plants which is proven to stimulate the skin’s natural wrinkle-fighting cells.

INTRAcel Eye
INTRAcel Eye is another fantastic treatment for rejuvenating the delicate eye area. In particular, this treatment is effective for reducing the appearance of crow’s feet and eye bags. Unlike our regular INTRAcel treatment which uses micro-needling, this treatment is totally non-invasive as it uses tiny electrodes to administer radiofrequency energy to the skin. This stimulates the production of elastin and collagen, the building blocks of supple, youthful skin.

Kenzo’s Spring-Summer 2016,
If the SS16 catwalks told us anything, it’s that the Nineties fashion revival is in full swing, and it was no different backstage. By Katie Wright, Press Association

W
e lost count of the number of make-up artists citing influences from those hazy premillennium days, but thinking back, is Nineties make-up really something we want to bring back - all that lip gloss and bronzer? As it happens, yes, it is - because this time round, the make-up maestros have translated the best of the decade, making it super wearable and ideal for spring. Here’s how to nail the Nineties look now...
BROWS NOW
Kneeling unabashedly at the alter of that Nineties goddess, the Supermodel, make-up artist Tom Pecheux gave models at Moschino huge brows, shimmering skin and mahogany 6 0 APRIL 2 0 1 6
lips, all topped off with Linda Evangelistastyle pixie crop wigs. At Christopher Kane, Lucia Pieroni said the brows were “a bit feral”, which means you should be combing them up and out, before filling in with a brow pencil that matches your natural shade. If you’ve gone a bit tweezer-happy and plucked beyond recognition, try Illamasqua’s new Brow Build, which contains micro-fibres to subtly thicken and fill brows. Illamasqua Brow Build in Flow, £18.50 (available April 7; www.illamasqua.com); MAC Big Brow Pencil in Spiked, £16 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)
TAME YOUR TAN
Back in the Nineties, before Instagram, the Kardashians and the rise of the YouTube make-up tutorial, contouring wasn’t ‘a thing’ and bronzer was applied liberally with a huge brush, the aim being an all-over tan, as if you’d just returned from two weeks in Miami. Nowadays, it’s all about carefully placed colour, so use a small contouring brush and a shimmery (rather than matte) bronzing powder across your cheekbones, temples and down the sides of your nose, then use a larger brush to blend out. You’re aiming for what Lynsey Alexander at Kenzo called “a desert sepia-toned tan”. Illamasqua Beyond Powder in Epic, £32 (available April 21; www.illamasqua.com); Givenchy Les Saisons Healthy Glow Powder in Ambre Saison, £36 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk); Blank Canvas Cosmetics F40 Small Tapered Contour Brush, £11.84 (www.blankcanvascosmetics.com)
UP-ALL-NIGHT LINER
Lucia Pieroni designed the make-up looks for Emilio Pucci and Chloe, claiming Nineties grunge and “rave girls” were the inspiration, which explains why both had a gorgeously smudgy eyeliner look. GET THE GLOSS
Make-up artists got really creative when coming up with ways to achieve a pale, matte Nineties lip, using anything but lipstick. At Alberta Ferretti, MAC Da Bling eyeshadow was patted onto lips, and at Blumarine, a pink cream shadow was used. A matte liquid lipstick is an easier way to get the look, and has better staying power, but for the ultimate Nineties homage, it doesn’t get better than a shiny brown lip, as seen at Kenzo. Either slick on a heap of caramelhued gloss or, for longer-lasting colour, fill in your pout with a tawny liner and finish with clear gloss on top. 8/10
After the suggested two-week wear of this tint-meets-mascara, my lashes did appear darker and more volumised, and the brush fulfils its promise of making lashes fuller and longer. However, on a number of occasions, I was left with remnants of black under my eyes, which I had to tend to during the day. £7.99 (www.boots.com)
Max Factor Voluptuous False Lash Effect Mascara in Black
This mascara definitely delivers superlong lashes, but it took me a bit of practise to get used to the long and thick wand, which meant I had to spend more time than usual with a lash comb, removing clumps. That said, when applied well, the results are great. £9.99 (www.superdrug.com)

Estee Lauder Sumptuous Knockout Defining Lifting and Fan Mascara in 01 Black
With a wand that’s thicker in the centre, and short, sturdy bristles, the brush pushes lashes out and up, opening the eye more with each stroke. The ‘fan’ effect is really noticeable, but I would have preferred a bit 9/10 more volume. £24 (www.esteelauder.co.uk)

But does this sugar-sweet look work in the real world? Absolutely! And it’s easily achieved with temporary colour, even if you’re not blonde to begin with, so you don’t have to commit for long. “We’ve seen some great on-trend colours being used on celebs and the catwalk, and now consumers can create the looks in salons,” says Josh Wood, Wella Professionals global creative director of colour. He describes the salononly Wella Professionals Instamatic as a collection of “soft, diffused and muted tones that allow for unlimited creativity”, including Pink Dream, perfect for following Rita and Jessie’s lead - but hair will need to be pre-lightened first (find your nearest salon at www.wella.com). “If you have warm-toned skin, this works well with peaches and corals,” advises Sean Nolan, technical educator for HOB Salons. “And hair chalks are great for experimenting, as they are the easiest to wash out of your hair.” Tracy Hayes, head of global colouring for Fudge Professional, adds: “Fudge Urban Hair Art sprays are highly pigmented pastel sprays that work even on dark hair and wash straight out, so you can switch up your hair colour as often as you like.” But with pre-lightened pastels, colour can fade quickly: “Avoid washing every day if possible, as the colour will fade with each shampoo,” says Hayes. “Use warm water and a gentle shampoo that’s sulphate and paraben-free.” Pixie Lott Paint Hair Chalks, currently reduced to £3.32 from £4.99 (www.superdrug. com); Fudge Paintbox in Coral Blush, £9.25 (available in salon or via www.fudgehair.co.uk)

“A great way to get to grips with what skin tone you are is to look at the jewellery, make-up and accessories you wear. If you wear blusher rather than bronzer, or silver jewellery, lean towards cooler pastels,” says Nolan. That means Kylie Jenner greens, from mint to turquoise, will work for you. “If you have a warm or pinkie skin tone, I would avoid the warm palette, such as coral and pastel pinks, but go with the cooler pastels, like lilacs or blues,” says Hayes, which means you can try the Instagram trend for grey-blue ‘denim hair’ - but you’ll need to start with bleach blonde tresses for this one. At home, Maria Nila Colour Refresh in Azure, £16.99 (SallyExpress.com), will give it a baby blue wash, and in the salon ask for Wella Instamatic Ocean Storm shade (www.wella.com).

“Pastels tend to work best on pale blondes. However, brunettes can still get involved, keeping to blues and violets, as they tend to work better on the cooler skin tone,” says Nolan. Pixie Lott Paint Wash Out Hair Colour in Violet 102, currently reduced to £3.99 from £5.99 (www. superdrug.com), will work best on blonde hair, but Label M Powder Purple Spray, £6.50 (AllBeauty.com), is dense enough to show up on darker hair too, giving a gorgeous violet wash.

Outdoor Kitchens
A New Way to Enjoy Your Garden
I
n recent years there has been a tangible rise in demand for al fresco cooking, with outdoor kitchens at the pinnacle of this burgeoning trend. These bespoke set-ups are essentially kitchens without walls, with many typical indoor amenities, but with the advantages of fresh air cooking. Jeremy Sharples of Kitchen in the Garden at Cedar Nursery explains the rising demand; “With the increasing sophistication of outdoor barbeques, the rusty, impossible to use light burner is a thing of the past. Modern grills are easy to use, easy to clean and, above all else, are capable of cooking a huge variety of foods perfectly.” For example, California Grills by Lynx, available at Kitchen in the Garden, offer a dazzling array of technological additions to the classic barbeque, including infrared searing burners and mechanisms to ensure heat is distributed evenly over the grill. These innovative cooking appliances can be arranged according to customers’ tastes and to fit in with their gardens, explaining the high demand. Jeremy works with both property developers and landscape gardeners to produce a bespoke set up, (priced between £5,000 and £35,000), which is in keeping with the rest of the property. New customers range from those who are building an entertaining space on top of their London roof terrace, to rural families seeking to maximise their time in the fresh air.
Outdoor kitchens present chefs with most of the options of an indoor kitchen, whilst improving the taste and the atmosphere. Jeremy comments; “Cooking outdoors produces more succulent, tender meat, as the air moving through the cooker is more humid. Dining al fresco always makes the meal just that little bit more special, and many proud new owners of outdoor kitchens are taking advantage of the convivial nature of cooking and eating outside by using it for entertaining.” The centrepieces for summer dinner parties, outdoor kitchens provide the means to cook a whole delicious meal, with that added smoky barbeque flavour. Kitchen in the Garden at Cedar Nursery is run by Jeremy Sharples, who left the corporate world to follow his passion for food. The store boasts a range of outdoor cooking products, from customisable outdoor kitchens through to wood-burning ovens, and now includes island outdoor kitchen units, in your choice of worktop and stone facing. It supplies and builds bespoke outdoor kitchens to match the style of your garden and cooking requirements, and offers the the best outdoor kitchen display in South East England, as well as helpful and professional advice. This exciting independent Garden Centre has so much to offer with so many departments, concessions to outdoor activates, you will find big surprises and something for everyone, for example plants that are not available in mainstream centres, short run gift items locally made and speciality items throughout the store. The Centre is family owned and run by people who really love gardening; this is obvious from the warm welcome, friendly atmosphere and the genuine willingness to help. It’s not just the many site departments or the colourful stock, it really is the people that make the difference. Between them, the various staff members have hundreds of years of knowledge to draw upon. Among them are award winners for growing vegetables, flower blooms, Woking in bloom, allotment plots, flower photography, RHS show and TV gardens and more. HOW TO GROW THE
PERFECT LAWN When sowing a new lawn from scratch, spring and autumn are the best seasons. To achieve some great results you will need to do a bit of planning.
Step 1: Find out how much seed you need
Measure out the proposed lawn area. The easy way is to work out a one-metre pace and then walk the area - e.g. 10m x10m = 100m2. Sowing application rates are mostly 35 grams of seed per square metre but check the packaging for details. It is better to buy too much rather than too little; you can always use the surplus to reseed any thin patches next season.
Step 2: Prepare the soil
Dig over the soil (the top 2-4 inches) to break down any compaction and help to increase beneficial bacterial levels. Remove stones, weeds and roots as you go along. You can add some soil conditioner to improve the soil and encourage a thicker, greener lawn. If your soil has too much clay you can also mix in some fresh soil. Now you need to level the surface of the soil using a rake to help create an even surface. It is not essential to create a dead flat area at this time, as any small irregularities can be smoothed with a top dressing once the grass has established.
Step 3: Remove newly-germinated weeds
If you leave the site for a few days, any remaining dormant weed seeds (and there will be some) will have time to germinate. Once they do, you can kill them off with a weed killer. A glyphosate-based herbicide will work within hours, killing off the new weed seedlings. Removing all the weeds means that the grass seedlings won’t have to compete for nutrition and space. Leave the soil for 7-10 days after using glyphosate and then apply a high phosphate fertiliser to the surface of the soil.
Step 4: Sow the seeds
Scatter around 35g per square metre (35g is a large handful). Sow half the seed from left to right and the rest from top to bottom to achieve an even coverage. Gently rake the seed into the soil. Not all the seeds need to be covered as rainfall or watering will ensure seeds make soil contact.
Step 5: Keep the soil moist
It may be a good time to invest in a sprinkler or a handheld hose attachment - especially if the weather is dry. Keeping the soil moist is needed to encourage good seed germination. However, it is important to water in the correct way. Seedlings need to be kept moist, so water lightly but more often rather than letting the ground dry out and then flooding the area. The best time to water the
1 0 APRIL 2 0 1 6
grass seed is in the evening or early morning. This avoids the harsh midday sun which can scorch and damage newly emerging moist seedlings.
Step 6: Look after the new seedlings
Germination will happen quickly, the exact rate depending on the temperature and prevailing moisture. Continue to lightly water during the early stages of germination (young plants will require more water than normal). A good tip is to feed a week or two after the initial germination using a high phosphate feed. This will ensure new plants have plenty of the right type of food. Water the fertilised in well.
Step 7: Trim the new grass
Watching the young shoots spring up is exciting, and you will soon think about mowing. Keep an eye on the length of the grass and when it gets to around 5-8cm long aim to trim the grass back just a little to 4cm. new grass plants are fragile and do not have strong root systems, so mow carefully and make sure you use very sharp blades for the first few months. When the new grass is about 4-8 weeks old you can begin to take the mower down to your regular cutting height. The ideal height of an average lawn is 2.5cm but avoid cutting the grass to this length within the first few months.
Step 8: Enjoy it!

Back to this year though, and another highlight for us was to have been chosen by the Royal Academy to complement their exhibition ‘Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse’. This has been a hugely successful exhibition, running from January to April at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and featuring works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro, Manet, Sargent, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Matisse, Klimt, and Klee. Those of you who had the chance to visit will have noticed that many of the individual ‘rooms’ making up the gallery space also contained teak garden furniture. This was an assortment of Barlow Tyrie Glenham teak seats and armchairs, and three Balmoral tables – 29 pieces in all, and was intended to give visitors the opportunity to sit and reflect on the paintings as if in a real garden setting. Exhibition designer Robert Carsen said: “I had the idea to use garden benches very early on. You can’t treat the floors nor the ceiling, so furniture seemed a good way of doing it, and we were very fortunate that Barlow Tyrie – the company that makes this beautiful teak furniture – generously

Bi-folding doors It is all about getting the right configuration
8 4 APRIL 2 0 1 6
I
f you are thinking about replacement bifolding and sliding doors for an existing “opening” to replace French doors, sliding patio doors or casement windows, or indeed looking at fitting folding and sliding doors into an extension - getting the right configuration first time round is vital to ensure their long-term practical operation. When it comes to “Bi-Fold” doors the clue is in the name, yet, despite this, many double glazing customers still get into hot water when having bifolding doors fitted, as before ordering they did not take the time to think through the ramifications of certain configurations. The key thing with bi-folding doors is to remember that each “pair” of bi-folds, opens and closes in tandem, so cannot operate as individual sections, they are in-effect one. As these two folding door sections are inextricably linked, no pair of bifolding doors can therefore accommodate a normal door handle, nor can one of these two sections operate as a travel door without the other opening or closing at the same time. Consequently, if you want to have a single travel door as part of your bifolding door configuration, you need to have an odd number of sections, namely 3, 5, 7 or 9 panes etc. Only high quality bi-folding doors will last regular use, as quality bi-folds are highly technical pieces of kit (and yes, they are expensive as a consequence!), it is vital when purchasing double glazed bifolding and sliding doors to invest wisely in robust enough products that will still be operational in 10 years’ time when the guarantee runs out and the
homeowner is left to foot the bills for all the call-out charges, parts and labour to get the folding doors operational and secure again. To avoid such issues, it is wise not to buy cheap folding and sliding doors, or indeed bi-folding doors without a cast iron warranty from a firm you are 100% certain will be around for at least the next 10 years to service the guarantee. It is worth asking yourself why some established UK independent double glazing manufacturers and installers who supply and fit aluminium and UPVC front doors, back doors, French doors and sliding patio doors in both aluminium and UPVC, refuse to supply and fit UPVC bi-folding doors. Could it be they are not fit for purpose? As a material, UPVC flexes, so is not the ideal product to use for bi-folding doors which need rigidity to operate well, and not be in danger of popping out of alignment. High quality double glazed aluminium bi-folding doors not only offer better security than plastic folding doors, but tend to have slimmer profiles, so are aesthetically more pleasing and deliver more glass and daylight. Yes UPVC folding doors are much cheaper to buy, but it is up to each property owner if they want to take on the risks involved, and are prepared to have less glass and light in the room in question. The optimum number of sections for a bifolding door for each particular property is really determined by the size of the aperture and how often these folding and sliding double glazed doors will be used. If you are looking for all the sections to slide in one direction, then a 3, 5, 7 or 9 section door will deliver a travel door with a normal door handle. The problem with 2, 4, 6 or 8 section bifolds doors which all flow in one direction is they cannot have a normal door handle, so are unable to fold up together properly, and therefore are more limited in their operation. Make sure that the doors you have fitted, come with “D” handles to assist with the opening and closing of the doors, as dragging them from one end can pull and stretch
the gasket, leading to unnecessary time consuming service calls. All bi-folding doors systems, whether made of aluminium, steel, UPVC or wood have their limitations in terms of both overall height and overall width, and indeed maximum and minimum achievable pane section sizes. So before creating an opening for bi-folding doors, do make sure that the product you are considering having installed will actually be able to fit it! It is better to make the opening to the optimum size of the bi-folding door system you have chosen, rather than the other way round. One top tip to remember is that these systems are highly technical bits of kits, so make sure they are fitted by professional installers with experience fitting the actual system you are having installed. Many reputable firms will not supply bi-folding doors on a supply only basis for this very reason. Finally, it is worth knowing that some bespoke aluminium bi-folding door systems allow for one single section at one end to swing open, allowing say a 3 section sliding and folding door to butt up to this, enabling the property to have a travel door, pair of French door and bi-folding doors all in one configuration of 3 linked sections, plus one independent swinging open section. Think carefully whether you want your bi-folding doors to a) open to the left or to the right, b) fold inwardly or outwardly and c) have a standard or low threshold. So before ordering bi-folds, take your time and ask an expert for a demonstration of whichever bifolding double glazed product you are considering before committing to a purchase, as not getting it right first time can be very costly. ommissioned by their client to create a glamourous, inviting and luxurious home on the prestigious private estate of St Georges Hill in Weybridge, the design team at Concept Interiors, led by Design Director Samantha Morgan, began working on the schemes whilst the build was still in its initial stages. This was to ensure that the design for the entire property flowed seamlessly throughout each of the spaces, whilst still giving each room its own identity. Using a combination of sumptuous textures and sophisticated finishes they have created a finished property that is luxurious and impacting, yet manages to remain warm and inviting despite its large scale. The Kitchen Family Room mixes gentle grey tones with tactile and elegant fabrics, working beautifully with the sleek kitchen cabinets and statement stone island. Cleverly concealed behind a kitchen door is the leisure complex, featuring an envy inducing bespoke bar and wine room with back lit glass & stone, an entertaining space, gym, spa & pool. Each space has been designed to have its own wow factor, from the Master Bedroom, which takes its design inspiration from the iconic Chanel quilting, to the ground floor cloakroom with its two meter high cascading crystal wall lights. The Drawing Room has an icy elegance, featuring panelled mirror walls, bespoke high gloss furniture and venetian glass lights. Concept Interiors have effortlessly

balanced the cool tones and mirrored surfaces with soft velvets and stunning silks, resulting in a truly breath-taking room that oozes glamour and sophistication. The study is unashamedly dark and masculine, using hints of gold to contrast against the black finishes and the book matched marble flooring. The design team chose to use antique mirror and polished gold detailing in the bespoke joinery to add more drama and finished off the space by tastefully accessorising in a combination of black and gold. In stark contrast to this, Her Master En-suite is overtly feminine. The bath tub is upholstered in white ostrich leather with Swarovski crystal buttoning and finished with a Rose Ogee pink marble top. The large walk in shower has a crystal chandelier shower head and the bathroom fixtures have crystal details. The glamour is continued in the stunning curved, gloss white vanity unit with leather panels and stone worktop and the vanity mirror is equally striking, with its leather and chrome detailing and crystal wall lights, all enhanced with a gorgeous pink marble wall frame.

CHAPLINS IMM COLOGNE TRE N D RE P O RT 2 0 1 6
Going Back to the Future It’s no secret that the furniture world loves a good blast from the past when it comes to introducing ‘new trends’ and at this year’s IMM Cologne Furniture Fair it was no different. There is something very comforting about a familiar design or colour scheme, which transports us back to simpler times. So how did this translate into the collections of our biggest brands? With all this in mind we saw many of our biggest brands celebrating their heritage and values within the new collections. Rediscovered classics of mid-century modernity were paired on the stands with new designs covered in materials such as rattan and bold velvets, displaying a strong association with the Seventies – a trend that has filtered into interiors from the world of fashion. So what pieces caught our eye in Cologne? Going out is the new staying in so why not do both? This year B&B Italia reconfirmed the importance of good design when it comes to our outdoor spaces. Gio, designed by Antonio Citterio, is a new outdoor collection with a contemporary classic look dedicated to living in the open air. From the special teak finish in antique grey, which gives the wood a particular lived-in aspect to the accent orange webbing, this range has the same style, quality and comfort as the indoor collections which B&B Italia have brought to us during their 50 year history. ‘Plumy – comfort with a capital C and relaxation with a capital R. This year we saw the reissue of an ‘iconic’ Ligne Roset sofa called Plumy. At first glance, we thought 9 2 APRIL 2 0 1 6
it may have been a new addition to the collection with its trendy design and new levels of comfort but we were mistaken, this sofa is an Eighties baby that hasn’t aged a bit! Not only were we impressed by the aesthetics of the piece, the option of angling the back cushions and unfolding the seat cushions made it possible to create a chaise lounge position – retro relaxation at its finest! Multi-Lite embraces the golden era of Danish design With its characteristic shape of two opposing mobile outer shades, Multi-Lite enables you to create your own personal installation with a wide range of lighting options. By individually rotating the shades, the Multi-Lite Pendant Lamp can be transformed into multiple combinations where the light can be directed upwards, downwards or exude an asymmetrical art light. This light is perfect for those who get easily bored and like to keep reinventing their space. Liven up your living space with clashing colours and vibrant patterns The Webby benches with their frames in solid walnut and buttoned seats allow you to experiment with bold and brash colour clashes (another fashion trend which will make its mark on interiors this year). These statement pieces look particularly
effective when selecting contrasting buttons. A new dining table design which doesn’t lose sight of the past With table 1060, Thonet have managed to design a modern piece of furniture that unifies the three themes of living, working and the brand’s 200 year heritage. Designer Jorre van Ast comments “It was a special challenge to design something new and, at the same time, to not lose sight of the company’s past. During the development process, it was therefore obvious to concentrate on one of Thonet’s key competencies: bending solid wood. It was my intention to design a companion for the fantastic Thonet chairs.” We think the table is a massive success, blending the company’s proud bentwood tradition with a new lightweight, contemporary design, perfect for both dining rooms and working environments. A world of design on your doorstep Through our commitment to detail and sourcing the right products, we to continue to drive design forward by showcasing the very best design houses and locating the products that fulfil our clients need for a timeless yet contemporary interior. We look forward to presenting all these lovely new pieces to you over the coming weeks and months. Tile with style
hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts. ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a
9 4 APRIL 2 0 1 6
great way to add texture and interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours. CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures. SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.

O
nce you’ve learnt to play with the options, there’s no limit to the effects you can enjoy, but with such a huge array of lighting on offer, the right choice for your home may not always be glaringly obvious. Here, experts reveal their illuminating advice on ‘seeing the light’, and the top trends for 2016...
BIG & BOLD Industrial style is vying with innovative lighting design for attention - and size does matter for today’s lamps, says Mark Holloway, 44, owner of lighting and furniture specialists, Holloways of Ludlow. SWITCH ON: To large lights - chandeliers, drum pendants and giant floor lamps - and materials such as wood veneers, concrete and hand-blown glass. LEADING LIGHTS: Solid, down-to-earth style is embodied in an Old School Electric Oval Bulkhead Light, in a brass finish, £55. Diva Floor Lamp, £1,749, combines a mouthblown inner glass globe with an exterior made from 32 individual pieces of wood, and is available in laminated oak or walnut.
LIGHTBULB MOMENT Decorative light bulbs, glass shades and cluster pendants are stars of this year’s light range, says Kirstin White, 29, lighting buyer at Habitat. SWITCH ON: To feature lighting - oversized floor lamps through to decorative wall lights - as a form of functional art, which will make a statement in any room. LEADING LIGHTS: Decorative light bulbs, in all shapes and sizes, can be an easy way to add interest, with a Calex bulb, from £10, enclosing a cluster of LED lights, particularly eye-catching. Make a statement with a Bulle Triple Cluster Glass Drop Pendant, £225, (available February), or a Tessellate Gold Metal LED Decorative Wall Light, £275. 9 8 APRIL 2 0 1 6
MAJOR IN METAL Metallics, especially copper’s warm tones, combine with light to give a warm glow, and will take centre stage in this year’s collections, says Victoria Atkin, 45, co-founder of Atkin And Thyme, specialists in hand-crafted and artisan homeware. SWITCH ON: To pieces made in a traditional way by skilled craftsmen, which bring authenticity to an interior, and embrace transparency with clear glass bases or shades. LEADING LIGHTS: A Castello Three Cluster Ceiling Pendant is a beauty as well as a bargain, as it’s currently reduced from £49 to £29. Floor lamps are versatile, because they can be moved to highlight a feature or area at will, and a Hector Angled Floor Lamp in Copper, £159, is handsome as well as practical. If you love the see-through look, a Kensington Hand Blown Glass Table Lamp With Black Shade, £99, is super-smart.
COLOUR & CALM More use of colour, and co-ordinating the style of a room’s lights, are two strong features highlighted by Nadia McCowan Hill, 32, style expert at online interiors company, Wayfair. SWITCH ON: To tailoring lighting to make the most of a room’s size and shape. Up-lighting makes a space feel larger, low-hung pendants give an impression of height and clusters of lights add cosiness. LEADING LIGHTS: Colour and contemporary style combine in a 10 Light Cascade Pendant by Endon Lighting, £249.60, which has a cluster of multi-coloured tear-shaped glass shades. A 1 Light Mini Pendant by Pacific Lifestyle, £42.99, is covered in faux silk, available in cream or grey and has the appearance of a flower opening. Satisfy your desire to be a star in your own show with a Hollywood Directors Table Lamp by House Additions, in black and gunmetal, £67.99 (down from £79.99).
