ROMAE was founded by a dynamic pair of jewellery enthusiasts, including classical archaeologist Cris and artist Elena who are also mother and daughter. Cris was trained as an archaeologist and museum curator, with a focus on the ancient Greek and Roman world. She has lived in Rome for the past 20 years, where she has worked with artifacts among the city’s wonderful museums and sites. She has always been particularly struck by the beauty and elegance of Roman jewellery, and convinced that the ancient designs would be as popular today as they were back then. Elena is an artist and designer who spent much of her life in Italy, and now resides in New York City. She is responsible for many of ROMAE’s contemporary jewellery designs.

Cris was initially inspired to create the collection after years of teaching university in Rome. “Every time I brought students through a museum gallery containing ancient jewellery, they fell in love with the pieces! The styles were still so current and relevant, so incredibly gorgeous -- I knew that we had to bring them back. So, Elena and I created a line of jewellery that is completely inspired by ancient examples. We are faithful to the original pieces, even reviving at times special shapes or brilliant clasps pioneered by the ancient cultures. Our jewellery line includes rings, earrings, necklaces, pendants, and bracelets, many of them with semiprecious stones such as garnet, carnelian, onyx, amethyst and crystal. Each of our pieces is made to order, and because we want the collection to be accessible to everyone, clients choose the precious metal for their piece, whether sterling silver, 18 carat yellow gold over sterling silver, 14 carat gold, or 18 carat gold. We also take special orders for different metals, and different stones, and, we personalize upon request! That was something that many ancient cultures did with their jewellery – inscribe names or messages on the pieces. We are so happy to revive all of these aspects, with our special line of jewellery.”
