NEWEmerging at G2 Gallery IX: Holly Peskin UNTIL MAY 20

T

he G2 Gallery is now showing Emerging IX: Holly Peskin this month. G2’s annual Emerging exhibit showcases work from rising talents. For the ninth installment, local artist Holly Peskin will present predominately black and white avian photography of Southern Californian birds in all their glory. Peskin’s interest in photography began at an early age. Having a natural eye for composition, her photographs garnered immediate attention, winning the California State Fair Photography Competition at age fourteen. It wasn’t until five years ago that Peskin began developing her photography skills in earnest, investing in professional equipment, attending workshops, and learning advanced techniques. Birds were an obvious subject for her work, having grown up along the coast in Los Angeles. Peskin frequently travels to Marina del Rey, Santa Monica and Malibu to capture her avian images. Having noticed the volume of documentary-style bird photography, Peskin opted to use fine art elements in her imagery. “Holly’s point of view is captivating,” says Curator Monika Basse. “It’s compelling to have a local photographer showcase local birds that flourish here but go mostly unnoticed by Los Angelenos.” The photos in the exhibit feature three native species: pelicans, herons and egrets. Her compositions capture the energy of movement as well as more intimate moments like nesting. “The opportunity to team up with The G2 Gallery, knowing that the proceeds of any sales will benefit Audubon California, is a huge privilege,” adds Holly Peskin. “My hope is for viewers to perceive birds as I do, as fine art in motion, and to leave with a newfound desire to protect and preserve nature.” The G2 Gallery, 1503 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice, CA 90291; www.theg2gallery.com

andrei duman: aerials to animals UNTIL MAY 20

A

lso, the G2 Gallery is currently showing Andrei Duman: Aerials to Animals, a collection of photographs from the popular Los Angeles-based artist. This is Duman’s second solo exhibition at G2 and will feature a variety of works from the travel and aerial photographer, including bold aerial shots, photos of African animals, and debut images from the remote Galapagos Islands.

Born in Romania and educated in England, Duman has traveled to more than 70 countries in pursuit of photography. As a Phase One Photographer, Duman shot all images from his recent trip on the company’s flagship XF iQ3 100MP model, which enabled him to create the accurate and detailed prints on view at G2. The G2 Gallery, 1503 Abbot Kinney Boulevard., Venice, CA 90291; www.theg2gallery.com

“The dark volcanic rock is a stark contrast to what makes the Galapagos such an incredible place” Many of the aerials on view are of Owens Lake, located in Inyo Country, California. Once a vibrant wetland habitat, the area is now a mostly dry lake and salt bed characterized by red and pink salt-loving bacteria, a result of diverting the Owens River to the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913. “The idea for this exhibit was initially inspired by Andrei’s aerial photography,” says Curator Monika Basse. “It’s exciting to capture nature in such an abstract way. Andrei’s photos from his recent trip to the Galapagos showcase the breadth of his work. “The dark volcanic rock is a stark contrast to what makes the Galapagos such an incredible place – the animals that call it home, many of which are indigenous,” says Duman. “From the iconic blue feet of the blue-footed boobies and the red neck of the male frigate birds to the multi-colored iguanas and the giant land tortoises, it is a dream to experience and photograph.”

THE G2 GALLERY The G2 Gallery is an awardwinning nature and wildlife photography gallery that facilitates change by bringing attention to environmental issues through the persuasive power of photographic art. G2 shares this passion with both celebrated and emerging environmental photographers, who use the camera as a tool to inspire conservation.

estled in 12 acres of landscaped gardens, this beautiful hotel is where some of the world’s most celebrated personalities go to relax and rejuvenate in style. Each of the spacious and contemporary guest rooms features the finest decor and a range of innovative technology – from impressive Bang & Olufsen televisions to beautiful desks with integrated media hubs and iPads in every room. With 45 suites to choose from, including

one-of-a-kind signature suites that offer grand residential style living, with large garden patios and fireplaces, the hotel has rooms to suit all tastes. For exceptional luxury, the impressive Presidential Suite has its own private courtyard and infinity pool, bed swathed in the finest Egyptian cotton, and a bar for those all-important social gatherings. For something a little less extravagant – but equally as elegant – the Canyon Suites offer supreme style and sophistication with a touch more privacy – not to mention some incredible views.

Hotel Bel-Air’s History Nestled in the canyons of Los Angeles, Hotel Bel-Air has been a hideaway for world travelers for more than 50 years. A visionary significant in the development of the area, Alphonso E. Bell created Bel-Air Estates in 1922. Bell acquired over 600 acres west of the city of Los Angeles, naming his new purchase “Bel-Air.” Determined that the estates would become an exclusive and upscale neighborhood, he enhanced the surrounding area

with new roads, utilities, a country club and lush, exotic vegetation. What is now Hotel Bel-Air’s main mission-style building was originally built as Bell’s estate planning and sales offices. These offices were located next to the Bel-Air Stables where residents could board their horses and enjoy the miles of equestrian trails winding throughout the canyons. For the next few decades Bell’s dream flourished. In 1946 Joseph Drown, a hotel entrepreneur from Texas, purchased 18 acres, and the land offices, and began plans to create an elegant pastoral hotel hideaway encompassing most of the land. Drown immediately hired architect Burton Schutt to convert the buildings and construct the 62 rooms of what was to become Hotel Bel-Air. Drown transformed the grounds into lush, beautiful gardens, adding Swan Lake to the picturesque front lawn. He had a vision of creating a natural California oasis, planting palms, ficus trees and perennial blooms. Drown also closed the Stone Canyon stables and built the sparkling oval-shaped pool at the site of the original riding ring. The hotel opened on August 24, 1946. Hotel Bel-Air quickly became a favorite of the rich and famous. Hollywood celebrities and world dignitaries were frequent guests at the glamorous retreat. ORACLE at the broad Featuring works by 20+ artists including El Anatsui, Ericka Beckman, Mark Bradford, Peter Halley, Julie Mehretu, Shirin Neshat, Sterling Ruby, Jeff Wall and Terry Winters, the show explores globalization

I

n an increasingly small world that spans politics, culture and commerce, The Broad presents an interpretation of the elusive globalizing forces at work in contemporary society in Oracle, a free collection installation this spring that will fill the museum’s first-floor galleries with more than 30 works from the Broad collection. The installation features works by over 20 artists including El Anatsui, Mark Bradford, Peter Halley, William Kentridge, Julie Mehretu, Shirin Neshat, Albert Oehlen, Jeff Wall and Terry Winters, plus recent acquisitions by Ericka Beckman, Sterling Ruby, Oscar Murillo, Tauba Auerbach and Andreas Gursky. Four artworks in the installation will make their debut in Los Angeles, including one work completed by the artist this year. From everyday experiences to protest movements as monumental as the Arab Spring uprisings across the Middle East, to themes that probe systems of social control or examine global commerce, artworks in Oracle tackle the effects of organizational frameworks on global events and private individuals. Some works in the installation symbolize marketplace machinations, both official and unofficial, while others are meditations on

UNTIL SEPTEMBER 3 games, surveillance, vast data sets, mathematical and biological patterns, and even the logic of art itself. Just under the surface of the works in Oracle is an air of anxiety, as if individuals’ freedoms within these manmade phenomena are illusory or beyond reach. “‘Globalization’ is a term now in the forefront in politics and the media, but for decades, contemporary artists have represented it in their work, responding to and decoding its many forms,” said Joanne Heyler, founding director of The Broad. “Oracle looks at how artists have anticipated the forces that have real consequences in our daily lives yet can be obscured from direct view.” Oracle features a solo presentation of paintings by Albert Oehlen, abstract paintings so thoroughly and cleverly steeped in an aesthetic of excess and indulgence that the artist persuasively communicates a visual picture of breakdown. Oehlen’s works portray a world on the brink of collapse, delicately navigating an overwhelming and anxious complexity. Julie Mehretu’s monumental painting Cairo, 2013, presents the ancient Egyptian city caught in a furious wind blowing off the Sahara, its

structures and history extending into black and white vectors. Simultaneously, the work portrays Cairo as the contemporary, revolutionary city in the political spotlight of the Arab Spring, which raised the world’s consciousness about government suppression and citizen-led change. Cairo embodies dichotomies: ancient and contemporary, social and political, mass and individual, while expressing a city’s life and the complexity of its continued existence. Like Mehretu, Mark Bradford’s mixed media collages Across 110th Street, 2008, and Boreas, 2007, combine abstraction and mapping. Bradford’s work also speaks to the two works by Terry Winters in the installation – Branching Structures, 1996, and Untitled, 2001. Whereas Bradford and Mehretu’s map-based works often look at social and geographic systems, Winters’ work is inspired by his exploration into equally complex biological and mathematical systems. Ericka Beckman’s You The Better, 1983/2015, was acquired by the Broad collection in 2016 and includes a digitized 16 millimeter film and set pieces with synchronized lighting that comprise the installation. The 32-minute film examines games of chance and the powerlessness of players to affect the outcome, drawing the viewer into the action with a life-size projection. Iranian-born, United States-based artist Shirin Neshat creates films and photographs that investigate the rigors of Islamic law’s effect on gender politics and daily life. The artist’s immersive installation Rapture, 1999, is also on view in Oracle. Shot in Morocco and featuring two black-and-

white projections shown on opposite walls, the work depicts a divided world where architecture and landscape stand as metaphors for entrenched cultural beliefs about men and women. Tauba Auerbach’s Shadow Weave - Chiral Fret Wave, 2015, will be on view for the first time in Los Angeles. The black-and-white strips of canvas create a pattern at once engaged in ancient technologies of weaving and redolent of digital imagery, specifically pixelation. Combining science, mathematics and aesthetics, Auerbach’s painting invites viewers to engage in its layered effect – both its mesmerizing patterns that create contemporary trompe-l’oeil and its literal layers of woven canvas that make up multiple oscillating planes while simultaneously approaching flatness. In Thomas Ruff ’s jpeg series, the artist enlarges images to a scale where they become extremely pixelated. In a time when the constant bombardment of images leads to desensitization, Ruff uses abstraction as a tool to re-sensitize. Like Ruff who examines the dissemination of images in the digital age, Colombian-born, Londonbased artist Oscar Murillo explores modes of contemporary distribution. Murillo’s trade today, 2014-15 will make its LA debut. Consisting of eight flag-like canvases hanging from steel bars, the work examines today’s borderless economies. Andreas Gursky’s Amazon, 2016, will be on view in Oracle. The photograph, spanning more than 13 feet, captures a rare moment of calm in an amazon.com warehouse, devoid of the workers who usually occupy the space. The image is in crisp focus, filled with row after row of miscellaneous goods in no discernible order. In this timely work, Gursky masterfully illustrates a mass distribution system built from algorithms, its patterns so complicated as to appear odd or even random. Amazon inspires an archaeological approach, uncovering a moment in time—a strata of the contemporary cultural landscape—through a plethora of artifacts produced for consumption. Los Angeles artist Sterling Ruby’s recently acquired work, SP272 (1), SP272 (2), 2014, a large scale diptych, is on view for the first time in LA. The spray painted canvases contain fluorescent pinks and greens in dystopic landscapes. Oracle is on view in The Broad’s first-floor galleries Until September 3, and is accessible with free general admission tickets. The Broad’s thirdfloor galleries will continue to show a robust and changing selection of postwar and contemporary works from the Broad collection. The Broad, 221 S. Grand Ave. Downtown Los Angeles, CA 90012

he Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is pleased to announce Abdulnasser Gharem: Pause, marking the first solo presentation by the artist in the U.S. The exhibition is curated by Linda Komaroff, curator of Islamic art and department head of art of the Middle East at LACMA, and includes 11 remarkable works of sculpture, stamp paintings, prints, and film – all of which were created in the aftermath of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. For Gharem, seeing the World Trade Center destroyed on television was a horrific moment that seemed to make the world standstill, or pause; he learned soon after that two of the hijackers were former classmates. The fact that Gharem is a Muslim, an Arab, and a lieutenant colonel in the Saudi Arabian army will likely provide added resonance for an American audience, while serving as a reminder that terrorism is experienced on a global scale. Gharem deeply absorbs the notion of pause into his work as an occasion to examine certain universal dichotomies that lead one to choosing his or her path in life. More literally, he has used the digital symbol for pause – a pair of solid rectangles – as a visual metaphor for the Twin Towers, which can be observed in the diptych Pause (2016), featured in the exhibition. Although the mediums and platforms for his work clearly borrow from the mainstreams of modern art, the narratives and images are drawn from the artist’s everyday world while many of his motifs, including geometric designs and floral arabesques, belong to the canon of Islamic art. “Abdulnasser Gharem belongs to a pioneering generation in Saudi Arabia that has introduced a local arts community to the global discourse.

Gharem is at the forefront of this movement, creating art in a range of mediums and techniques largely outside the traditions of painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture,” says Komaroff. “Over the last decade, LACMA has built the largest collection of contemporary Middle Eastern art of any U.S. museum,” says Michael Govan, LACMA’s CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director. “As an encyclopedic art museum, we recognize the importance of creating links among the past, present, and future within our larger collection, notably within our extensive Middle East holdings, which extend from the fourth millennium B.C. to the present. In addition to presenting two successive exhibitions dedicated to our own contemporary Middle East collection (Islamic Art Now, Parts 1 and 2 (2015–16)), we recently hosted a show

focusing on the work of Iranian-born and New York-based artist Y.Z. Kami (Y.Z. Kami: Endless Prayers (2016–17)). We are thrilled to continue such efforts in presenting this monographic exhibition of Gharem’s work, which includes two pieces from LACMA’s collection.” “King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture strives to support and provide platforms for Saudi artists to express their work locally and internationally. It is with great pleasure to provide a platform for Abdulnasser Gharem, one of the most distinguished Saudi artist of his generation. It is also a great pleasure to collaborate again with one of the most renowned cultural institutions, LACMA.” says Tareq AlGhamdi, King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture’s director. Abdulnasser Gharem: Pause will be on display in the Ahmanson Building, Level 4, with the artist’s newly created large-scale piece, Camouflage (2017) installed in the lobby of the Ahmanson Building, on Level 1. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), with Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City (MPBA), presents Picasso and Rivera: Conversations Across Time, an exhibition that examines moments of intersection in the formation of modernism both in Europe and Latin America, and asks how Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera – towering figures of the 20th century – both exchanged ideas in Paris about avant-garde paintings and later engaged with their respective ancient Mediterranean and Pre-Columbian worlds. Co-curated and conceived by Diana Magaloni, deputy director and director of the Program for the Art of the Ancient Americas at LACMA, and Michael Govan, LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director, and developed with Juan Coronel Rivera, curator from the MPBA, with guest curators James Oles and Jennifer Stager, the exhibition compares the artists’ trajectories beginning with their similar academic training to their shared investment in Cubism and their return to an engagement with antiquity from the 1920s through the 1950s. More than 100 paintings and prints by both artists are in dialogue with one other and with dozens of ancient Greco-Roman, Iberian, and Aztec objects, Picasso and Rivera aims to advance the understanding of the artists’ practices, particularly in how their contributions were influenced by the forms, myths, and structures of the arts of antiquity. Picasso and Rivera’s radical approach to understanding ancient art was in many ways subversive: by doing that they also rewrote art history – greatly enlarging the recognition of artistic contributions of ancient civilizations. Ancient art became essential for their sense of the future, both personally and politically. “By placing masterworks by Picasso and Rivera alongside Greco-Roman, Etruscan, and Iberian works as well as Mesoamerican sculptures and ceramic figurines, the exhibition weaves together distant geographies and worlds to blur the frontiers of time and space,” said Diana Magaloni. “Picasso and Rivera views both artists as inventors of a new visual reality in the first decades of the 20th century. Diego Rivera brought the Pre-Columbian world to the forefront by showing that the art produced by these cultures was for the Americas what traditional Greek and Roman art was for Europe.” “LACMA thinks about art history along a continuum,” said Michael Govan. “Rather than perpetuating historical or cultural hierarchies, we seek to create dialogue, particularly given our location in a city that stands at an international crossroads with both Latin America and the Pacific Rim. This exhibition is a product of an Americas viewpoint, where our ancient indigenous heritage proposes a novel worldview that can interface with classical Western traditions, bringing both a diversity of viewpoints and a profound convergence of human and artistic values.”

“Cookie Good is offering a cakeinspired line of cookies, so mom isn’t limited to just one treat”

AT COOKIE GOOD THE COOKIE GOOD BAKERY

After a few years of baking thousands of cookies at home with only a 6-quart mixer and a single oven, Ross and Melanie Canter decided to move to a commercial kitchen. As the business grew, they finally took the step to building their own bakery. The 1930s brick building in Santa Monica is perfect – right across the street from a park with palm trees, lawn bowling, and a duck pond. The goal has always been to create a space that was fun and familiar, yet clean and new; where the smiles of the people working behind the counter were as warm and inviting as the incredible smell of cookies baking inside; where kids and curious grown-ups could walk up to a glass wall and peer into the 40 quart mixer churning out batch after batch of dough. “We love our shop and our new bakery family, and we hope you’ll come visit us all sometime soon,” say Ross and Melanie.

MEET THE OWNERS About Ross

For years I was a “writer who bakes”. I’d spend my days in coffee shops writing screenplays, TV shows. Each day was an emotional rollercoaster as I struggled to find self-worth while being mocked by blank pages. But, relief came on weekends and holidays when I’d get into the kitchen and make cookies. I love that you can take lots of different, totally unrelated ingredients, mix them together, nurture them just a little bit and come out with something wonderful, edible and delicious. I realized that I rarely got that feeling of complete satisfaction while sitting at my computer and I knew that I wanted to feel “cookie good” more often. As luck would have it, Hollywood writers went on strike in 2007 and now, with no source of income, Melanie suggested it was time for a career change. We perfected my cookie and brownie recipes, sent an email out to family and friends and three minutes later we had our first order (in truth, it was for my best friend but I still think it counts). We’ve been baking, shipping, developing new flavors and feeling “cookie good” ever since.

“The goal has always been to create a space that was fun and familiar, yet clean and new” in the hope that Cookie Good might somehow make the world a better place – even if it’s just one cookie at a time. Besides supporting many schools and charities year-round, every October we donate proceeds from our cookies to the Breast Cancer Care & Research Fund, an organization that is very close to our hearts. We hope you love our cookies, but even more importantly, we hope that Cookie Good will remind you that when life gives you a writer’s strike, you bake; and that feeling Cookie Good is about a lot more than just eating cookies.” The bakery ships its delicious products nationwide, delivers locally, and is available for purchase online at cookiegood.com or for pickup at the brick and mortar location in Santa Monica. Cookie Good, 2448 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA 90403

About Melanie “Unlike Ross, the baker who writes, I don’t bake or write. But luckily after 25 years of marriage, 23 years of parenting, birthday parties and holidays galore, I can wrap a mean gift so we make a great team in the bakery. On a deeper note, Cookie Good isn’t just about delicious cookies and pretty packaging. It’s about our family’s struggle to find our passion in life and our ability to survive; it’s about our desire to give back and make an impact on this crazy world – and having lived with breast cancer for the past 21 years, surviving is something our family knows a lot about. So in 2007, when presented with a sink or swim situation, we decided to dive in and combine Ross’ passion for baking and my quest to give back M AY 2 0 1 7 4 5

offiaB’s mission is to ensure mornings begin gently and evenings end with elegance. Owner and Founder Sophie Burkart born in the UK began her quest for the perfect robe at an early age. She searched in vain for a robe that looked stylish and felt good against her skin. In her pursuit she bought many iterations of a dressing gown, some big, fluffy, towelling styles, some lacy, lingerie styles – adequate, but neither combining the style and comfort she sought. Hence SoffiaB was created, with attention to detail that is perhaps hard to find on similar products, “a significant factor in my purchasing was quality. Robes that quickly began to lose their shape or seams that became unstitched were a constant irritant. This was why it made to sense to produce our dressing gowns in New York’s Garment District where they are known for their quality and attention to detail”. By combining her love of beautiful fabric, insisting on seductive comfort, SoffiaB brings you luxury defined in the form of their exquisite silk robes and dressing gowns. “In today’s lifestyle with the advent of lounge-wear it may seem the dressing gown or robe is unnecessary, but I think we need them more than ever. Today’s woman has so many demands on her time and person, she needs something that reminds her she is special and unique, our limited edition robes do just that.

VEC LES FILLES, now available at Macy’s, is a contemporary lifestyle brand created by fashion industry favorite Joyce Azria for the self-assured and stylish woman. French for “with the girls,” AVEC LES FILLES connects an achievable price point with aspirational design for a line that hits the millennial woman’s sartorial sweet spot. The new brand is Azria’s journey into the “dress code” of the inspired millennial, and aims to redefine how women express themselves and explore the world through the lens of fashion. I’ve always been acutely aware of who the millennial customer is and how her shopping habits have evolved over time,” said Azria. “AVEC LES FILLES is uniquely positioned to bring a relevant and fashionable collection of lifestyle products in the spirit of today’s shopper, and I am grateful to be bringing my vision to life with the power of Macy’s.” 5 2 M AY 2 0 1 7

Its ease of wear is as impressive as the breathtaking design, and we’re thrilled to bring her fresh, cuttingedge vision to the Macy’s customer.” Menswear-inspired shirting is accented with femme ruffle details while overalls receive a chic update rendered in luxurious fabrics. Lattice-work bodices, bomber jackets in opulent textiles, and embellished cold-shoulder tops add a formal touch to sportswear, while jersey dresses with knot details, silk hoodies, and cropped sweatshirts with satin ties offer an elevated take on the popular athleisure trend. GUCCI TIMEPIECES & JEWELRY ADDS NEW EXTENSIONS TO LE MARCHÉ DES MERVEILLES COLLECTION Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry is pleased to release new additions to the Le Marché des Merveilles collection, which offer a rich palette of materials, mirroring the creative aesthetic of the House today, and champion the workmanship of this constantly evolving watch range. The animal motifs – the tiger, bee and snake – are the hallmarks of this line, and are elegantly worked into these new extensions, which are defined by exquisite embroidery or finely-cut colored leather. Two timepieces in this range come with a soft brown Toscano calfskin strap; three others have a sportier look and are fitted with a nylon strap featuring the striped Gucci web. These variants also have GucciÊs expression, ÂLÊAveugle par AmourÊ woven onto the strap in bold urban lettering. A detail that distinguishes Le Marché des Merveilles timepieces is the use of embroidery on the nylon dials, where intricate designs of a snake, tiger or bee are offset by the web striped background. Cases are coordinated to the colors of each timepiece, worked in warm yellow gold PVD or stainless steel version. The snake is also framed on a special leather variant, crafted from a single piece of leather used for both the strap and the dial. Here, a grainy leather strap is embellished with a highly detailed red snake design that spirals along the strap before being captured under the sapphire glass. This piece comes with a polished stainless steel case. Each watch in the Le Marché des Merveilles collection is presented in a 38mm size and is engraved with the bee design on the case back. www.gucci.com

We selected some of our favorite looks to showcase, but alongside that we wanted to make a statement about self-confidence, empowerment and authenticity. “With Collins, we selected a group of models and non-models alike to help tell a story of togetherness and unity, as if to say we are all here as one. As a young woman, Petra has such a strong and captivating voice, and an incredible way of articulating what she believes in through her camera lens. Her photos capture moments that are real and honest, and for this we think she is a great person to express fashion for 2017 in a way that feels strong, powerful and beautiful.” Collins, Toronto-born photographer and curator, has been featured in numerous art exhibitions and magazines such as Vogue, Purple, i-D, Rookie, Vice, Wonderland, Dazed & Confused, Elle, and LOVE. The TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 The first TAG Heuer modular luxury watch bearing the Swiss Made label Swiss tradition connected to the future Smart and beautiful The TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 simplifies your life, thanks to our engineering collaboration with Intel. Incredibly practical, the built-in GPS enables you to track your journeys and sporting performance, with no need for your phone: all the information you need is right there on your wrist. All this technology can also be taken with you into water, thanks to its 50m water resistance. So you can swim, run, ski, explore, and live life to the full. Finally, screen uses OLED technology which offers incredible resolution and amazing colors, providing high contrast to stunning effect on the highly sophisticated watch dials – you won’t believe your eyes!A wealth of digital watch dials bearing TAG Heuer’s famous codes. The modularity concept extends to the watch’s software, with dial customization. The brand has developed 30 watch dials, all retaining TAG Heuer’s identity, some of which are inspired by historical pieces such as the famous panda dial, drawing on the brand’s great heritage. Colored white, black, light grey, anthracite grey, chocolate brown, navy blue or gold, with sunray finish, skeleton dial, 3 hands, GMT, a chronograph with 1, 2, or 3 counters, plus a date and day window, these dials are interchangeable with a single swipe of the finger. 6 4 M AY 2 0 1 7

R

ecently luxury Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer unveiled the second generation of its connected watch, with its partners Intel and Google in complementing announcements taking place in Switzerland and California: Jean-Claude Biver, TAG Heuer CEO & President of the LVMH Watch Division, said: “After the huge success of the first TAG Heuer Connected watch, today I am very proud to present the Connected Modular 45. This is a Swiss watch which embodies the luxury codes of tomorrow, and which not only enables you to connect to the future, but also to connect to eternity thanks to its simple and smart modular design. This innovative, unique and distinctive watch is at the forefront of the latest technologies available in Silicon Valley and, at the same time, a genuine Swiss watch, bearing the Swiss Made label. It is the incarnation of our leading position with luxury connected watch and with this high level of technology.” “Engineering the next wave of smart and connected devices with iconic partners is a core strategy for Intel,” said Josh Walden, Senior Vice President and General Manager, New Technology

Group, Intel. “We are thrilled to continue our strong collaboration with TAG Heuer. With innovative design and technology, the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 redefines the capabilities of a luxury smartwatch.” “The first generation of the TAG Heuer Connected pushed the boundary of what is possible when you combine traditional watchmaking and cutting-edge technology,” said David Singleton, Vice President of Android Engineering at Google. “We’re excited to work with TAG Heuer again to create a new powerful connected watch that demonstrates the ongoing innovation of TAG Heuer’s craftsmanship and the Android Wear platform.” Why choose Brunnen with the view on the Rütli, in the heart of Switzerland as the symbolic place in which to launch the watch? Rütli in German means “Little meadow”. It is Switzerland’s founding legend and considered a national monument. Back in 1291, it was in this clearing, just above Lake Lucerne, that the representatives of the primitive cantons took the oath of Rütli to seal their alliance. Over time, the Rütli

meadow has become a “national shrine”. Here, on the 1st August every year, Switzerland celebrates an official national holiday. It was this deep-rooted connection to true Swiss values that Jean-Claude Biver wanted to highlight by gathering his partners from Silicon Valley and the world press here.

Create your own dial... just like a watchmaker The TAG Heuer Studio dial configurator also offers customers the chance to create their own dial, just like a watchmaker. In the blink of an eye, you can choose your standard dial with its functions, and customize all the colors, the look of the metals on the indices and hands, the details in SuperLuminova™ and the lacquered tips for the finishing touches! With TAG Heuer Studio, you can coordinate your watch to match your business suit, your running gear or even your swimsuit. And if you fancy setting the wallpaper to show one of your own photos – perhaps a photo of a loved one, a beautiful sunset or a fond memory – you can give your creativity free rein, because anything is possible.

Customize the interactive counters Thanks to interactive counters, customers can choose to display up to three of their favorite apps on the dial: the number of steps taken, the number of calories burned, the dollar rate, free time before the next meeting... these are just some of the many options depending on your interests. Everything you need, at your fingertips.

What is the essence of the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 watch? The TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 has been designed and engineered in the pure Swiss watchmaking tradition. It is a luxury Swiss watch which benefits from over 150 years of Swiss expertise, savoir-faire and heritage as cultivated by TAG Heuer, a watchmaker based in La Chauxde-Fonds, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking (and a UNESCO World Heritage site). For more than 150 years, TAG Heuer has been inventing and manufacturing elegant sports watches here, including some of the most accurate chronographs produced by the Swiss watchmaking industry. The finest of watch labels: Swiss Made Just like the brand’s famous mechanical chronographs, the Connected Modular 45 has been designed, developed, and assembled in the TAG Heuer Manufacture, in La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, in the same spirit and with the same high standards as a luxury product with Swiss Made quality. s good for your mood as they are for your body, baths can become addictive, but that’s no bad thing. The four essential ingredients for a super soak? You’ll need a candle, soothing music or a podcast, wine and something delightfully fragranced to pour into the steaming tub. Turn your bathroom into a spa-like sanctuary with these bathing beauties...

ESSENTIAL OILS The most luxurious way to scent your soak, bath oils dissipate in hot water, releasing the fragrance and creating a moisturizing film that clings to your skin. They may be more expensive, but you only need a splash, and the potent aroma of essential oils can be invigorating (citrus and ginger) or slumberinducing (lavender works wonders before bed).

SPRINKLING OF SALT If soothing aching limbs and cold symptoms is your top priority in the tub, bath salts are what you need. A capful of the clever crystals in a hot bath will relieve muscle tension, plus the salt draws out moisture to reduce bloating (result!), while the vapours help clear airways. 6 6 M AY 2 0 1 7

MAGIC LOTIONS Prolong that post-bath Zen by lathering up with a body lotion – particularly important if you’re partial to a piping hot soak that can leave your skin dry Gourmand scents, like vanilla and tonka bean, are real mood-boosters, while ingredients like shea butter and argan oil will soften and restore moisture.

Usually, these things would really ‘show’ on my face, yet this time, they didn’t seem to affect my skin. I took the two capsules a day, as instructed, and even after several sleepless nights, there were no new wrinkles around my eyes, and the ones I did have seemed to reduce in appearance. There was also a marked improvement in the fine lines around my face overall. My skin felt super-smooth and soft too, and apart from a few spots around my chin, my complexion was very clear. It is an institution whose reputation looms large in the imagination of so many more people than can ever have visited it, let alone been members. On this same 9-acre (3.6 hectare) stretch of oceanfront in Surfside, Florida, located in the northern beaches of Miami, Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club today comprises 77 guest rooms, a selection of hotel residences, Le Sirenuse Restaurant and Champagne Bar, three pools, a pristine beach, and Spa and Wellness Center. “The Surf Club’s success has always been determined by quality, passion and relaxed precision and that remains our priority today; being intuitive, exceeding our guests’ every expectation and creating memories that will last a lifetime,” says General Manager Reed Kandalaft.

The Surf Club Yesterday The Mediterranean Revival building and beachside cabanas that made up The Surf Club were designed by Russell T. Pancoast. They formed elegant backdrops that would frame the beach and sea, and cradle the crowd from the outside world at the same time. Mandarin Oriental, Taipei And Dior Present J’adore In Joy Afternoon Tea

Getting their property back At Notre-Dame-des-Landes, a new airport is planned to replace the existing Nantes airport. The battle has been going on for years. Five years after the French state expropriated a large area of land for the airport, there has been no start to the project. Therefore under the French system, those who have lost ownership of their land can apply to get it back. Around 30 people affected are now submitting the necessary legal papers to get their land, farmland and buildings back, to the court in Saint-Nazaire. These people have not used the money, and they don’t want it. They want ownership of their land and property back. The French system did not anticipate, in the law relating to expropriation, that any scheme would have delays for as long as five years.

Following last year’s success, Mandarin Oriental, Taipei is collaborating with prestigious French perfumer, Dior, to hold another aromatic afternoon tea for guests. The J’adore In Joy Afternoon Tea will be available at Café Un Deux Trois until14 May. Inspired by the alluring scent of the perfume, J’adore In Joy, French Executive Pastry Chef, Gregory Doyen, has specially handcrafted a beautiful array of delicious pastries for the afternoon tea. All guests ordering the tea will receive an exclusive gift set from the perfumer, which includes a miniature of J’adore In Joy, making this afternoon out doubly pleasurable, a sensual treat for both taste and smell. www.mandarinoriental.com

t a time when economies thrive on arms industries and hopeless wars wage over resources, it’s refreshing to be in a place that belongs to no one. The world’s seventh continent, a frozen desert loaded with hostile superlatives, has no army, no government and no land up for plunder. Holding our planet in the palm of its icy hand, Antarctica influences climate and weather patterns worldwide. Clearly, there’s no question who’s boss. But attempts are underway to tame the wild beast – or at least make it more accessible. One Ocean Expeditions are one of a handful of operators offering tourists the option to fly into King George Island, a research base 120km off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, thus avoiding a two-day voyage across the tempestuous Drake Passage. Weather permitting, it’s a breeze – although that doesn’t mean our 11-night voyage will be a leisurely, diluted affair. Getting off the beaten track sounds like a tautology in a place as remote as Antarctica, but the truth is - wilderness is getting busier. IAATO, the body monitoring tourism in Antarctica, estimates 43,885 tourists for the 2016/17 season, a 12% rise on last year. Currently, 52 vessels operate, although that number too is set to increase. Their reports also suggest that of the 180 authorised landing sites available, 25 are significantly more popular. Our aim is to explore the western side of the Peninsula, tackling the unpredictable Weddell Sea, where fewer vessels go. To ease ourselves into the adventure, we first skirt the eastern edge of the continent, following a classic route. “Would you like to go to paradise?” asks our expedition leader, Aaron, rhetorically, as we enter the appropriately named bay. Snow-wrapped mountain peaks ripple in the wake of our zodiac boat, as we slice through perfect reflections, where ice floes play the role of clouds floating in a cerulean sky. Beneath a beaming sun, frozen sculptures melt like candle wax until gossamer smooth, and glistening slopes framing the inlet are a swirl of kaleidoscopic refractions. For the past few weeks, this ‘Antarctic Riviera’ has been drenched in sunshine; a pattern consistent with the last decade, according to one naturalist on board. Perhaps it’s too crude a deduction to interpret it as climate change, but there are signs to suggest disturbed equilibrium. Long chains of salps (peashaped organisms encased in a gelatinous body) ribbon below the surface; their presence indicates a rise in water temperature and dictates a crash in the population of krill - the bedrock of all marine life. All, it would seem, is not well in paradise. For now, though, there’s still a sufficient supply of the 5cm semi-transparent crustaceans to feed 7 4 M AY 2 0 1 7

“Would you like to go to paradise?” asks our expedition leader, Aaron, rhetorically, as we enter the appropriately named bay”

“The Drake is a rite of passage; experiencing it is fundamental to appreciating wilderness at the end of the earth” creatures 320 times their size. Weaving between our zodiacs and trails of brash ice in the inky black waters of Orne Harbour, humpbacks lunge feed at such close proximity, I gulp and gag at blasts of their fishy, putrid breath. Arcing above us on the Antarctic continent proper, a ridgeline of slate spires knife the sky, top tier housing for a colony of rock scrambling chinstrap penguins. Reaching them requires a steep, sweaty climb, although thick snow stymies my ascent. Metres away, my calf-high companions make it look effortlessly easy as they waddle purposefully along hewn out ‘penguin highways’, returning from a fishing trip, to feed their newborn chicks. Yet, eking out an existence in this mercurial environment is thwarted with rigours. Nowhere is this desolation more felt than at Deception Island, the caldera of an active volcano in the South Shetland Island archipelago, at the tip of the Peninsula. The last eruption occurred in 1970, at Telefon Bay, where a steep-sided valley rips through the color-drained basalt landscape, stained white with zebra stripes of ice. A listless crabeater seal languishes at the bottom, the only sign of any recent life. Some distance from the water, his unfortunate presence leaves us baffled, and as rage-swollen black clouds belligerently hurl spears of hail in our direction, we retreat to avoid a similar fate. It’s rare to see any other vessels on a polar voyage, so meticulously orchestrated are the itineraries, but icebergs currently choking the Lemaire Channel, further south, mean many are navigating the same waters. To avoid them, our expedition leader selects some atypical landing sites. Carrying less than 100 passengers, our ship, the Akademik Sergey Vavilov, has access to places off limits to bigger liners; and an experienced crew can navigate zodiacs into landing spots others wouldn’t dare attempt. Shallow depths and submerged boulders challenge our entry into the astounding Gourdin Island, where 14,000 pairs of Disney-eyed Adelie penguins nest alongside several hundred gentoos on scree slopes slipping into turquoise, Maldiviankissed waters. It’s January, and most chicks are newborn; some eggs are yet to hatch. Attentive parents corkscrew their necks before dexterously performing a nest changeover, and hungry youngsters guzzle drools of regurgitated krill. I’m especially taken by the pear-shaped gentoo

babies, dragging their bellies along the ground like freeloaders ruined by a bottomless buffet. Comedy capers unfold all around. All penguins have an insatiable instinct to steal stones, always striving for nest-building perfection, but one kleptomaniac hasn’t quite got the idea; repeatedly picking up nothing, he carries it from one place to another, creating an ever-increasing empty pile. Our voyage, incorporating a visit to the Falkland Islands, offers a chance to see seven species of penguin - but one type was always going to be an outside bet. A colony of emperors lives south of Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea, but impenetrable ice scuppers our hopes of the exploring the Peninsula’s tricky west coast. Instead, we drift through the Antarctic Sound, passing a graveyard of sky-scraping tabular icebergs in solemn procession as they gradually turn and tumble, becoming part of the swelling ocean once again. Reaching the Falklands requires skirting the Drake Passage for a day or two, although our solid Russian research vessel can easily handle boisterous waves. But I enjoy every sharp lick of the ocean’s fury. More than a body of water, the Drake is a rite of passage; experiencing it is fundamental to appreciating wilderness at the end of the earth. In the Falklands, amid tussocks, honeysuckle and lupins, we encounter more avian beauties, our eyes torn between sea and sky. Squabbling rockhopper penguins pelt through the surf at New Island, while graceful black-browed albatross swoosh from clifftop runways, balancing on blustering winds with sangfroid. On West Point, these unlikely neighbors carry out parenting duties, and at Saunders Island, on hillsides raped by over-grazing, predatory caracaras rip young Magellanic penguins from their burrows. It’s a sad loss, but one which won’t dent the population. According to members of American science and educational foundation Oceanites, who have been conducting a penguin census during our voyage, we’ve clocked up a whopping 1,208,664 birds. But not one single emperor. Next time. Besides, in a shrinking world, it’s reassuring to know some doors remain closed. We’ll just have to wonder and imagine what greatness lies beyond. Gold words: Karen Bowerman

n the searing heat of Australia’s Gold Coast, I’m attending the unveiling of the 2018 Commonwealth Games baton. Taking place in a hotel auditorium in Broadbeach, a small district just south of Surfers Paradise, up on stage, local kids in fluorescent hot pants perform high kicks and back flips, as a giant, bright blue koala - the mascot of the Games dances among them. The baton began its journey from Buckingham Palace in November, through the nations and territories of the Commonwealth. It carries a message from the Queen, inscribed on paper made from Australian spinifex grass. 288 days and 230,000km later, it’ll be back on the Gold Coast for the start of the 2018 Games. The baton is a sleek, narrow loop, made from the region’s native macadamia wood found on its mountains, and reclaimed plastic gathered from its shores. There’s a strip of reflective stainless steel, said to evoke the coast’s iconic skyscrapers, and flashing LED lights, to symbolise the energy (certainly evident in all those high kicks) of the people who call the region home. The Gold Coast is made up of 57km of honeycolored, surf-soaked beaches, 66km south of Brisbane in Queensland, eastern Australia. It stretches from Main Beach in the north (close to numerous theme parks including Dreamworld and Movie World) to the laidback sands of Coolangatta in the south. The undisputed “capital” is Surfers Paradise, where shops sell sexy bikinis and branded board shorts, suntanned locals merge with sunburnt tourists, and bars offer countless cocktails and dancing ‘til dawn. I stay directly south, in the quieter, chic suburb of Broadbeach, where the sand is so clean, I can’t help wondering if the baton’s architects had found it a struggle sourcing enough plastic for their ecofriendly design. Each morning, I sit on my balcony and watch the Pacific Ocean pound the shore. But while the coast is known for surfing, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the water, too. 10 kilometres north of Broadbeach (just off Marine Parade, Labrador) is The Broadwater, an area of ocean protected by islands, where Steve from Australian Kayak Adventures runs paddling tours. We set off from a slip of beach next to a small lagoon. Within minutes, a bottlenose dolphin arches out of the sea in front of us. As the sun glints off distant skyscrapers, we haul our kayaks onto South Stradbroke Island, the other side of the water, and pad through dunes covered with creeping spinifex grass to the beach on the far side. South Stradbroke, or Straddie, as it’s called by locals, is a favourite haunt of surfers. It’s also home to the swamp wallaby, which has black face markings that resemble a mask. The animal has lived in isolation here for so long that it’s developed a unique ginger-colored belly and white-tipped tail. We find some tracks: two-pronged prints and a sandy swish made by a tail, but fail to spot any.

8 0 M AY 2 0 1 7

“The Gold Coast, however, isn’t just coastline. Beyond the shore is what locals call “the green behind the gold””

Back at the lagoon, pelicans are swooping in from the sea as if they’d received some avian text alert. As it nears one o’clock, around 60 of them gather on the shore. They’ve come for their weekend pop-up restaurant, provided by staff at the local fish market. The birds put on quite a show, snapping up titbits with their enormously long bills. The Gold Coast, however, isn’t just coastline. Beyond the shore is what locals call “the green behind the gold” - the region’s hinterland, defined by the Scenic Rim, an area surrounded by volcanic mountains. From just outside Canungra, a rural township 25km inland from Surfers Paradise, I take in the forests and farmland from the sky. It’s just after dawn, and Ben from Hot Air Balloon Gold Coast, is gradually turning our balloon eastwards, so we can see sunrise. He points out Tamborine Mountain, a 500m-high plateau formed by eruptions 22 million years ago. The rich soil is ideal for growing avocado, kiwi and macadamia nuts.

We float gracefully over the countryside and land so smoothly, I’m not even aware we’ve hit the ground. A barefoot local farmer in his seventies, bumps across the field on his quad bike to greet us. “Thought you were going to crash into the hedge!” he shouts, as two yelping sheepdogs run round him. “He says that every time,” Ben says, as I help him fold the mighty balloon away. I stay at O’Reilly’s, a guest house in the heart of Lamington National Park. Owned by the family since the 1920s, it was built before the rainforest was declared a national treasure. My rustic room, overlooking the mountains, has black and white pictures of the O’Reilly boys on horseback. Scatter cushions depict the Bowerbird which Sir David Attenborough came to film here. I venture on bushwalks, wobble along the Treetop Boardwalk (a rope and plank suspension bridge) and climb a 30m fig tree-cum-observation deck for views of the canopy. One of the guides, Luke, invites me to look for glow worms. I join him and a Chinese tour group and stumble into the night. The glow worms we’re looking for are actually the larvae of the fungus gnat. They give off light to trap insects in sticky threads which they trail from rocks beside the creek. My companions and I have no common language, but when we reach the riverbank, we share a sense of awe. It’s as if we’ve stumbled across a huge display of twinkling, fairy lights. It reminds me of the Gold Coast’s flashing baton. Although the tiny grubs can’t match its colors, they are easily the region’s spectacular, and completely natural, alternative. Her new book, Modern Vintage Style, opens the door to homes where owners have embraced this approach, to create inspiring fun, quirky and personality-filled settings. It’s guaranteed to appeal to those bored with the bland, who don’t want to slavishly follow trends and prefer to march to their own decor tune. As Chalmers promises: “There are no style diktats, no ‘this must go with that’ rules. This approach is all about trusting your instincts and taste, and using your imagination to seek out the right items for your own personal blend of contemporary and modern.” Even better, the style won’t break your budget, as many vintage pieces cost next to nothing and can be found in flea markets, jumble sales, car boot sales, secondhand shops or church fairs. “When you find them, it’s like winning the style lottery,” says Chalmers. “It also feels so right for now, tapping into the zeitgeist for reusing, recycling and repurposing. More than ever, we’re conscious that instead of constantly buying new things, we must look after and recycle the old. The bonus is those pieces of yesteryear are made with care and craftsmanship.”

Pieces which share a design ethic can help bring visual harmony; mid-century modern connects well with minimalist Japanese, while modern country furniture sits well with antiques. A Sixties graphic throw, a piece of old lace, or a crocheted blanket can give a modern high street couch an injection of vintage. • Sleeping style: Scour second-hand shops for hand-woven linens, hand-stitched quilts or old paisley duvets for a bed dressed vintage style. Use empty barrels, ornate chairs, small drawer units or a collection of old suitcases as quirky bedside tables. • Ring the changes: If you like a piece but it’s not quite right, consider ‘style surgery’. Replace a fusty floral seat cover with one in a bold color or a striking pattern. An item with chipped paint, worn corners or in an outdated finish can be quickly reinvented with a coat of brightly colored paint. • Let it breathe: If you find a vintage roll-top desk, an old sewing machine or an exquisite Chinese wardrobe or another treasure, let those pieces stand alone and enjoy the limelight, rather than cluttering them with accessories. They’ll be particularly eyecatching placed in formerly redundant corners, like stair landings or hallways. • Fabric-wise: Retro-istas in the know refer to ‘vintage’ as the period between 1920 and 1980, while post-1980 fabrics are deemed modern. Old beads, pom poms, ribbons or sequins sewn onto favourite cushions or curtains will add flair to modern fabrics. Vintage quilts, particularly old hand-sewn crib quilts, make stunning wall art or curtains. • Paint the past: Reflect an era in wall color. The Fifties were all about soft pastels (such as baby pink, apple green, sky blue); the Sixties went psychedelic (hot pink, deep turquoise, dark purple); and the Seventies became all warm and neutral (olive green, burnt orange and fresh mustard). A classic pairing, like white and blue, is timeless, while monochrome evokes a mid-century yet modern look. • Pay and display: Indulge a passion for collecting whatever takes your fancy, from kitsch creatures to zany toys and hip art, and make a display of finds. ow is the perfect time to switch on to the power of lighting and illuminate rooms with everything, from new effects to simple bulbs which shine a spotlight on a feature, or even change a mood. “Lighting really matters in a home and can literally transform it,” promises George Clarke, architect. “I’ve seen great buildings ruined by bad lighting schemes, and great lighting improve bad buildings. What’s fantastic these days, is that there are affordable, effective ways of personally tailoring lighting schemes, using technology like smart phones and tablets, which a decade ago, would have costs thousands.” Clarke, who’s currently working with Philips lighting, believes good lighting doesn’t just have a visual effect, but can also help improve our wellbeing. “Artificial light can now mimic natural light and light systems can be programmed to suit our body rhythms. Replicating a soothing sunset glow in the evening can help people relax and encourage relaxation and sleep, while gradually increasing light levels in the morning to mimic sunrise can encourage us to wake in a more gentle fashion. Lights conjuring the effect of natural sunlight indoors may offset the negative effect of a grey day outside. There’s almost no limit to what can be achieved.”

LIGHT BULB MOMENTS Clarke gives his guide to LED lighting... “In general, people are scared by lighting and confused by all the terminology. That’s a real shame because LED lighting is so versatile these days. For instance, there’s a misconception that it’s a cold light, but the key to success is selecting the right color temperature of the bulb, which is measured in a unit called a kelvin (k),” he explains. “Bulbs with higher kelvin value create a cooler, crisp white light (4000k) which are suitable for practical areas, like a kitchen or bathroom, while those with a lower kelvin value (3000k) produce a warmer white light more 9 0 M AY 2 0 1 7

appropriate for living rooms. “If you want to easily change the ambience, there are innovations like a Philips Scene Switch LED light bulb ($30.99 for 4, Amazon) which allows you to use your light switch to flick between three different light levels, from bright to natural to a soft warm light. This bulb can be used on an existing light (simply using your normal light switch to change between settings) and removes the need for a dimmer.”

LIGHT TOUCH “A common mistake people make is only having light coming from one source - for instance, simply having a ceiling light. In reality, good lighting is achieved by creating different layers of light which conjure variation, texture and atmosphere,” says Clarke. “Clever accent lighting - wall sconces, floodlights, recessed lights or track lighting - can dramatically change a space and highlight key areas or architectural features. Even just hanging an adjustable pendant light over a dining table will define the space and make it feel more intimate. “Colored lighting is also a fantastic way to add a ‘wow’ factor, especially if the light source is hidden. Use colored light strips above kitchen units, but, to get the maximum effect, keep the background a neutral white as a contrast.”

TRICK OF THE LIGHT “Lighting should be flexible, so you can zone different areas and alter light levels to change mood, atmosphere or focus it to better suit a specific activity,” says Clarke. “A good scheme allows you to instantly reinvent a space - or, in increasingly popular open-plan living rooms, the areas within the space - without having to change a room’s overall layout. “There are so many ways to draw the eye. Bare bulbs are very much on-trend, as are metallic finishes and sculptural shapes. Table lights are a really good way to partition areas in a room, so a light on a side table behind a couch will create a visual break in an open plan room. “Do bear in mind colors and surfaces reflect and absorb light in different ways. Shiny materials like satin, silk and metal bounce light around a room, whereas darker, denser materials, such as wool and velvet, soak up light.”

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi List Santa Barbara Villa for $45 million Sotheby’s International Realty, Inc. exclusively retained to sell romantic 1930s estate

1 0 0 M AY 2 0 1 7

B

eloved stand-up comedian, television host, bestselling author, and Emmywinning actress Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Australian–American actress Portia de Rossi, have listed their storied Santa Barbara villa for sale with Suzanne Perkins of luxury real estate brokerage Sotheby’s International Realty, Inc. for $45 million. Prominently featured in Ellen’s 2015 book Home and known as ‘The Villa,’ the estate dates to the 1930s when celebrated architect Wallace Frost, having recently returned from living in Italy, built the two-story residence for himself, emulating the classical style of 17th-century Italian villas with great accuracy. Decades later, acclaimed architectural designer John Saladino fell in love with its “mix of grandeur and modesty” and commenced a five-year meticulous restoration of the property for his personal use.

“Acclaimed architectural designer John Saladino fell in love with its “mix of grandeur and modesty”” Ellen and Portia purchased the The Villa in 2013 and expanded the estate through the acquisition of two adjacent properties, which now totals 16.88 acres. They spared no expense in modernizing the historic property for a relaxed California lifestyle. A dramatic indoor-outdoor entertaining pavilion known as Jordan Hall was built from stone excavated on-site and hand-made iron windows. The couple also added a lap pool, sunken championship tennis court and installed state-of-the-art irrigation, mechanical, electronic and security systems. The secluded estate, secured by 18th-century Spanish gates off a private road, offers expansive views of the ocean, harbor, and mountains from nearly every vantage point.

IN ELLEN’S WORDS “The house is always surprising. It reveals itself to you in new ways every day. It’s not overly manicured or tidy. It’s not overly precious or perfect. And it’s a home that manages to be both spacious and cozy at once.” – Ellen DeGeneres “The surrounding gardens and olive trees are almost as wonderful as the interior. The house truly feels like it was built out of the landscape, rather than plopped on a plot. It feels ancient, like it’s been there forever. Like that hill was never without the house. This is a home that honors nature, and I love that.” – Ellen DeGeneres “If you think of your home as a canvas – regardless of its style of architecture – you can put anything on it. I tend to keep painting the painting until it’s so done, there’s nothing left to do. That’s when I sell the canvas and buy a new one.” – Ellen DeGeneres

THE PROPERTY In the hills of Santa Barbara, the pure pastoral ambience of the Tuscan countryside pervades this elegant stone villa, with its gentle light, rugged stone and wood and reverence for the natural surroundings. Perched on a crest with views of the ocean, harbor, and mountains, the secluded estate was designed and built in the 1930s by celebrated architect Wallace Frost. After living in Italy, Frost created the two-story, residence for himself, emulating the classical style of 17th-century Italian villas and creating an air of Old World romance and refinement. Impeccable attention was paid to every detail: a classic barrel-tiled roof, terracotta surfaces, wide wood flooring planks, rustic exposed ceiling beams, 18th-century Italian tiles, vintage light fixtures, and sturdy walls of locally quarried stone. Highlights include six restful bedrooms, six baths, nine fireplaces, a media room, multiple libraries, a regal living room, a formal dining room, an inviting kitchen with marble-wrapped surfaces and stainless-steel appliances, relaxing stone terraces, and exquisite landscaping. Windows and glass doors admit lovely natural light, opening to encourage an interplay with the outdoors. The aggregate square footage of the main residence with attached guest apartment and Jordan Hall is approximately 11,395.

“Of all the extraordinary homes in Santa Barbara, Ellen and Portia have created a retreat like no other” “The one word that defines The Villa is perfection. Of all the extraordinary homes in Santa Barbara, Ellen and Portia have created a retreat like no other.” – Suzanne Perkins, listing agent, Sotheby’s International Realty, Inc. The 16.88-acre grounds, secured by 18th-century Spanish gates and approached by a meandering quarter-mile drive, are strewn with olive and eucalyptus trees, charming fountains, colorful gardens, and eye-catching statuary and sculpture. An idyllic alfresco dining area is tucked beneath striking mature trees, their winding, twisting branches creating cool shade. Beside the alluring Roman-style pool, amid a swath of verdant grass, an antique Italian column creates a dramatic silhouette, most notably at sunset. Recent additions include the spacious, modern entertainment pavilion known as Jordan Hall; a lap swimming pool; and a tennis court. As the land rolls gently downhill, tall trees give way to a sweeping view of the Pacific and the hills beyond.
