H

eal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium is located beach level at the historic Santa Monica Pier, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. At just under 5,000 square feet, the aquarium offers educational programs, activities, and special events dedicated to marine conservation, biodiversity, pollution prevention, and environmental education. The marine center is also a popular destination and community resource for students, local residents, and a portion of the estimated seven million annual visitors to the Santa Monica Pier.

The aquarium has been the public face for premier environmental non-profit Heal the Bay for nearly 14 years, and welcomed its one millionth visitor in 2016. The marine science center exhibits more than 100 species of animal and plant life – all species native to the Santa Monica Bay. With the goal of providing an engaging and educational experience, staff, trained volunteers, and interns are stationed at various exhibits to help identify animals on display, answer questions, and engage in conversations about the ocean environment.

Approximately 100,00 people visit the Aquarium each year, including nearly 15,000 students who participate in grade-specific education programs.

Through hands-on interaction with animals in tide pool touch tanks and conversation with knowledgeable staff, the aquarium inspires visitors to become stewards of the marine environment, and to support Heal the Bay’s mission to make Southern California coastal waters and watersheds, including Santa Monica Bay, safe, healthy, and clean.

Aquarium exhibits include three large touch tanks teeming with life from the tide pools; visitors can feel a knobby sea star or a sticky sea anemone, and experience both a sea urchin’s spiny hug, and the soft silky surface of a sea cucumber. The kelp forest exhibit is home to several species of fish,

Wednesday Sand Crab Survey Participate in some citizen science with our staff, who lead the way to the beach at 3pm to collect data on these little critters at the shoreline.

including blacksmith and the giant kelp fish, a variety of rockfish species, as well as a large wolf eel. Moray eels dominate the rocky reef exhibit, and a large open top tank allows visitors to gaze down upon swell sharks and horn sharks. An octopus, Pacific seahorses, spiny lobsters, a dozen species of crabs, and many more varieties of fish and invertebrates are also found in tanks in the main gallery.

The Kids’ Corner jewel tanks are a collection of six porthole-style exhibits filled with colorful life positioned to attract children and adults. The Kids’ Corner also contains the popular shark nursery, where newborn shark pups are on display alongside baby sharks not yet hatched are displayed in their egg cases to highlight their different stages of development. The newly renovated Dorothy Green Room is home to the Aquarium’s watershed exhibit and demonstrates the perils of urban development on waterways and on the animals that inhabit them.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE AQUARIUM February 11 & 12 For the Love of Whales Valentine’s Day is approaching, but before the hearts and flowers, bring your sweetheart (and the family) to Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium to celebrate love of the Pacific gray whale. The aquarium’s annual Whale of a Weekend returns February 11 and 12. A host of whale-related activities will be ongoing both days from 12.30pm to 5pm.

Each winter Pacific gray whales complete one of the longest migrations of any species, traveling 10,000 to 14,000 miles round trip between the Arctic seas and the warm lagoons of Baja California, Mexico. This migration takes the whales past the Santa Monica Pier -sometimes within viewing distance from the pier’s west end observation deck.

Visitors can feel the heft of a whale rib, check out bristly baleen and try on a layer of (simulated) whale blubber for warmth. Learn more interesting facts about these gentle giants at the aquarium through story time, film screenings and presentations about their migratory habits. Face painting, a cetacean-centric crafts station, and a wildlife observation station at the western end of the pier are planned for both days of the celebration.

March 15 Rube Goldberg Machine Contest Wanted: Teams of students from middle schools, high schools and colleges to compete in the 4th annual regional Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, March 5 at the Santa Monica Pier.

Teams must build a contraption that completes the task of applying a Band-Aid in a most complicated and humorous way.

The deadline to register a team for competition is February 21. The contest begins on March 5 at 11.30 am, when teams will have three opportunities to run their devices; judges from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, SpaceX and others will proclaim the winners, who advance to a national competition.

The contest headlines S.T.E.A.M. Machines, a day-long, free expo hosted by Heal the Bay and the Santa Monica Pier Corporation. It’s a techno-geek/nerd’s paradise with a variety of interactive science, technology, engineering, and math activities using art as the medium. And the theme continues below deck, with more S.T.E.A.M. – related activities running throughout the day at Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium.

EXHIBITION FOCUS An Irruption of the Rainbow: Color in 20th-Century Art

W

ith the discovery of scientific perspective in the early 1400s and the resultant understanding of a painting as a window onto nature, artists tended to use color descriptively, to create representational images of the visible world.

Toward the end of the 1800s, however, artists began to experiment with color. In 1888 French artist Paul Gauguin famously instructed a colleague to use color freely rather than naturalistically in his paintings: “How do you see these trees? They are

yellow. Well then, put down yellow. And that shadow is rather blue. So render it with pure ultramarine.

Those red leaves. Use vermilion.”

Thus liberated, artists began to employ color in many different ways in their work: not only descriptively, but also scientifically, politically, formally, and synesthetically (to stimulate the senses). Paul Signac declared his allegiance to color theory, while Wassily Kandinsky, a pioneer of abstraction, played with synesthesia. The Russian avant-garde artists El Lissitzky and Pyotr Konchalovsky used color polemically in the 1920s, as did Sister Mary Corita Kent some half century later. Henri Matisse, one of the greatest masters of color, used pared-down colored shapes to explore notions of figure and ground, presence and void.

Photographer William Eggleston found heightened color in everyday situations, while contemporary artists Polly Apfelbaum and Ginny Bishton bring together ordinary materials and bold color to create vibrant works of art. From the late nineteenth century to today, artists have reveled in – to borrow the words of British author Diana Norman – this “irruption of the rainbow.”

OPENing this month Moholy-Nagy: Future Present February 12 to June 18, 2017 The first comprehensive retrospective of the work of László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) in the United States in nearly 50 years, this long overdue presentation reveals a utopian artist who believed that art could work hand-in-hand with technology for the betterment of humanity. Moholy-Nagy: Future Present examines the career of this pioneering painter, photographer, sculptor, and filmmaker as well as graphic, exhibition, and stage designer, who was also an influential teacher at the Bauhaus, a prolific writer, and later the founder of Chicago’s Institute of Design. The exhibition includes more than 250 works in all media from public and private collections across Europe and the United States, some of which have never before been shown publicly in the U.S. Also on display is a large-scale installation, Room of the Present, a contemporary construction of an exhibition space originally conceived by Moholy-Nagy in 1930. Though never realized during his lifetime, the Room of the Present illustrates Moholy’s belief in the power of images and various means by which to disseminate them—a highly relevant paradigm in today’s constantly shifting and evolving technological world.

The Inner Eye: Vision and Transcendence in African Arts February 26, 2017 to July 9, 2017 The Inner Eye: Vision and Transcendence in African Arts features 100 outstanding sculptures and eye-catching textiles that explore how the arts and their visual regimes enable transitions from one stage of life to the next and from one state of being to another. Works reflect culturally specific notions of visuality and celebrate artists as agents of insight and transformation. Iconic figures, masks, initiation objects, and reliquary guardians guide people to spirit realms, to the highest levels of esoteric wisdom, and to the afterlife. Many works possess downcast eyes of contemplation and spiritual reverence, while others depict piercing projections of power and protection, or a multiplicity of eyes for heightened vigilance and awareness. The exhibition addresses various ways of seeing and encourages viewers to notice how works were made to look upon, gaze within, and see beyond ordinary limitations.

ince Karyn Millet was gifted her first camera by her parents, a world of photography was opened up to her. She had a fulfilling career in PR and publishing for 14 years where she styled, and supervised plenty of photo shoots. “I decided that it was finally time to get behind the camera and capture the images I always wanted.” As a photography student, she had a class assignment to shoot something that could be in a magazine. Whilst her fellow photography students were focusing on trendy fashion shots along train tracks, she was shooting living rooms.

“Because of my background in interiors, decorative arts seemed like the natural place to start.” The passion was born and she has not looked back since.

What do you love about where you live?

We live in Brentwood in Bundy Canyon, above Sunset Boulevard. Our house has a bit of Hollywood history as it’s on the grounds of the former Rita Hayworth estate. The original estate was subdivided into what is now five homes. Her actual home was on the next street over, Saltair, and the Bundy section was where they parked the cars. There is still the original laundry post on our side of the hill. Los Angeles is a very big place and this connection to old Hollywood makes it feel more like a small town to me. A favorite spot at home, is what I refer to as “Sunset Terrace” on our hill. It is a very relaxing perch with lanterns hanging above. It faces west and has the most beautiful sunset views. I also love how close Brentwood is to both the beach when I need to relax and city life when I need to connect.

Before you took up photography, were you always creative?

I have always danced and continue to do so today.

Starting at age five, I started ballet and still enjoy a local class in Santa Monica a couple times a week. As a teenager, I acted in plays – everything from the role of Anne Frank to a Pink Lady in Grease! I always wished I was better at drawing and painting, so when I found photography it provided me with the visual expression I was missing. I remember people started referring to me as an ‘artist’ after I had been shooting a while and I felt I wasn’t worthy of such an illustrious title. Slowly I got used to the term but I am forever humbled whenever someone uses it.

ON GUATEMALA… My father was born in Guatemala and it will forever have my heart. Friends who are like family continue to welcome us with open arms. I have been taking photos for a small school called Abrazos de Jesus in Paramos for many years now. I never leave without tears of joy in my eyes from photographing the beautiful smiles of the school children who are such a blessing in my life.

Can you describe a typical day?

Ideally, a day would begin with an early swim with my husband Dan. In the pool, I think of the day ahead and the quiet lets me focus on my prayers and thankfulness. Then it’s processing pictures for hours in our home office. Most people don’t realize that for every day shooting, it requires at least two days of diligent photo processing. We have a Dutch door that brings in fresh air to the office and relaxing views of the green hillside. And not to be forgotten, our little dog Webster is right by my side. To round out the day, I try to schedule either a pilates session or ballet class. If it’s a shoot day, my lighting tech will arrive about 8am and we will pack up the car for that day. As I shoot interiors, many times the houses are close by unless it’s a travel shoot. Once

Family connections And are there any challenges you face?

The most challenging part of photography is always wanting to take more pictures. When I’m traveling or on a local shoot, I never want to leave a shot behind! I challenge myself to end a shoot with an absolute favorite shot. That way I can exhale, smile and know that I did my very best.

What do you love about being a photographer?

My favorite part of being a photographer is that I always have a friend by my side. Even if I’m alone on a trip or even just out for a walk, I have a companion in my camera who helps me ‘paint a picture’ of what I’m experiencing at that very moment. And, like a good friend we can review the images together over and over again, seeing new things each time. I take a photo because it wants to be taken, but the added benefit is it often brings joy to others in my life and even people I’ve never met.

When a photo reaches beyond my own eyes, it is not mine any more but ‘ours.’

You describe yourself as a true Californian, what does that mean to you?

I grew up on the sand with sunshine on my face and salt water in my hair. This feels like home to me. From Newport Beach to Malibu, when I can sit on the sand as the day grows long with the sun is sinking into the Pacific, I am happy.

What hopes and dreams do you have for the future?

My hope for the future would be that through my work, faith and family I can help shine a light on others needing a helping hand. Whether it be in our own backyard or a tiny village in Guatemala, I would like to use any gifts I have to benefit the daily life of others.

n partnership with Guinness World Records, runners are invited to make their mark in history at the 2017 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. Beyond completing the 26.2 mile run on the iconic “Stadium to the Sea” course – a feat in itself – runners will be given the opportunity to attempt an official Guinness World Records title.

To make this already extraordinary event even more memorable, Guinness World Records will be providing record-breaking hopefuls with on-the-day record verification at the 2017 race.

If you would like to attempt a record, please complete a standard application via the Guinness World Records website’s ‘Set a Record’ section and include the following information: 1. New 911 RSR for Le Mans

S

tuttgart. Porsche will tackle the 2017 racing season with an all-out newly developed GT racer. The new 911 RSR makes full use of the breadth of the Le Mans 24 Hours GT regulations, and in addition to systematic lightweight design, features the ultramodern, flat-six unit positioned in front of the rear axle. The four-litre, extremely light aggregate features direct fuel injection as well as a rigid valve drive and is characterised by outstanding efficiency.

The new 911 RSR will make its debut at the Daytona 24-hour race in January 2017.

“While retaining the typical 911 design, this is the biggest evolution by now in the history of our top GT model,” says Head of Porsche Motorsport Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser. The new 911 RSR is a completely new development: the suspension, body structure, aerodynamic concept, engine and transmission have all been designed from scratch.

The engine concept has enabled the designers to install a particularly large rear diffuser. Combined with a top-mounted rear wing adopted from the LMP1 race car, the 919 Hybrid, the level of downforce and the aerodynamic efficiency were significantly improved.

“For the 911 RSR, we deliberately focussed on a particularly modern and light normally-aspirated engine, as this gave our engineers immense latitude in developing the vehicle,” explains Dr Walliser. “Apart from that, in principle, the LM-GTE regulations stipulate the absolute equality of various drive concepts, as the torque characteristics of turbo and normally aspirated engines are aligned.” Depending on the size of the restrictor, the new normallyaspirated unit puts out around 375 kW (510 hp). Shift paddles on the steering wheel actuate the sequential six-speed gearbox with a magnesium housing, which delivers power to the 31-centimentre-wide rear wheels. The changeover to the new engine generation is now complete. After the 911 GT3 R and the 911 GT3 Cup, the spearhead of Porsche GT racing cars is now also powered by the same cutting-edge sixcylinder boxer engine family.

In the past, Porsche has already thoroughly

pushed the limits with the concept of the 911 – in 1996 with the 911 GT1. With great success: In 1998 the 911 GT1 achieved the 16th overall victory for Porsche at the Le Mans 24-hour race. Back then, the fastest vehicle in the field emerged from the GT1 class.

prototypes are detected early enough and misunderstandings can be avoided. A new safety cage concept and a new, rigidly-mounted racing seat enhance driver safety. With the seat fixed to the chassis, the pedalry can now been moved and adjusted to fit the driver.

With the look of the body wrapping, the 911 RSR is striking out in a new direction: For the first time, the GT racer bears the new factory design that has further developed the clear and dynamic design language of Porsche Motorsport. From a bird’s eye view, a hint of the Porsche emblem silhouette can be seen. The basic colors remain white, red and black.

In the 2017 season, the factory is expected to run the new 911 RSR at 19 outings which equates to more than 140 hours of racing. With two factory-entries, Porsche will tackle the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) including the 24 Hours of Le Mans as well as the American IMSA Weathertech Championship. The new racer will celebrate its debut under the toughest conditions at the IMSA season opener in Daytona on 28-29 January. “We’re very well prepared for this,” says Marco Ujhasi, Head of GT Works Sport. “Since its first rollout in Weissach in March this year we’ve covered 35,000 test kilometres on racetracks in Europe and North America – that’s more than in the development of any other Porsche GT racer.”

Food with style in Santa Monica

I

’m not even hungry but I’m scrambling for the most photogenic doughnut from a hipster cardboard box like it’s the last one on earth. I opt for a gooey chocolate ring. But I don’t eat it; not even so much as a lick of the reflective glaze.

I’m snapping baked goods on a smartphone as part of a ‘#FoodPorn’ masterclass in Santa Monica.

It’s one of hundreds of new experiences that heralds the beginning of Airbnb’s new Trips-with-acapital-T phase, but more of that later.

We find our host, 36-year-old Insta food stylist Stephanie Goldfinger, sitting cross-legged on colorful Aztec blankets on Santa Monica’s picturepostcard beach promenade. Donning a mustard T-shirt, floppy hat, and LA-esque white smile, she’s like a 2016 version of Farrah Fawcett.

“I’m a little cheesy but I’m a chef, so that’s allowed,” she says with a laugh, introducing herself.

Our snap-happy group sits surrounded by Sidecar doughnuts, Izze clementine bottles (striped paper straws mandatory), and a library of glossy foodie magazines for inspiration. We’re shaded from the midday LA sun by rows of towering palm trees.

So far, so Instagram-friendly.

to Expect as a Budding Food Stylist’ that also outline basic smartphone camera angles employed by super-bloggers. She tells us shots of stuffed sandwiches and tacos are the trickiest to do justice in photographs. My tummy rumbles.

“I’m going to show you how to make your plate pop,” Stephanie says enthusiastically. “You’ll come out of this looking at food a bit differently – maybe even changing what you order in a restaurant.”

As a veggie Insta-chef with a penchant for comfort food, Stephanie’s two-day Food Porn experience also takes in fresh produce shopping at Santa Monica’s Farmers Market, serving/styling lunch tables at her rooftop in Venice, and chatting about the hippest food hangouts on everyone’s lips, like Gjelina and Gjusta. It’s not just food styling but a whistle-stop gourmet tour of LA’s westside districts through Stephanie’s eyes.

And that’s precisely what Airbnb is offering via the new Trips app with Experiences. The app may be high-tech but it’s all very people-powered.

“We think travel is about who you can become, not just where you go,” said Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky, at Airbnb Open, the company’s annual conference in Downtown LA. “These aren’t just guided tours, you actually participate.”

For one day only (more if you really want to immerse yourself) you can be a kimono stylist in Tokyo or a truffle hunter in Florence. And the list of 500-plus bucket-list experiences goes on and on.

There are audible gasps when Chesky unveils a moving preview for ‘Jack, The Prison Warder’ - a Cape Town two-day experience run by Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard and cook. As one of Airbnb’s Social Impact Experiences, 100% of the cost goes to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Experiences last anything from three-hours, to multi-day ‘immersions’, and are currently available in 12 cities: LA, San Francisco, Miami, Detroit,

The Airbnb squad – Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nate Blecharczyk – have some seriously starry backing in the form of A-listers Ashton Kutcher (an early investor in the company) and Gwyneth Paltrow (just ‘a fan’, apparently).

“When I got divorced, I started living in Airbnbs because I had nowhere to live,” Kutcher jokes at the conference. “I stayed somewhere in Europe, arrived at the Airbnb in the middle of the night at 2am and

the host had left me dinner and a glass of wine. It was exactly the magic and love that I needed in that moment.”

Maybe Kutcher was the muse behind the app’s new Hollywood-inspired design feature.

Experiences are presented in the form of movie poster-style billings that make the host the ‘star’ and feature mini highlight trailers.

The movie poster is especially apt for Kevin Townsley, an Experiences host who runs ‘TV Writers’, one of the most authentic, old school LA trips on the Experiences list.

“I’m getting interest from hobbyists, enthusiasts and even people from LA who are already in the industry,” Kevin explains.

“You get to experience a day in the life of a TV writer, morning, noon and night, based in three very different LA settings. I’ve already hosted someone who used it as a taster before they moved out here.”

Wearing traditional kimono dress and obi, Mika Otani is another Experience Host who stands out at the Airbnb Open. She’s practised the ancient art of Ikebana flower arrangement, or what she calls “living sculptures”, for 30 years. Mika ticks me off when I ask her all about the flowers and not the plants, which are held in equal regard in Japanese culture.

Hosting ‘Exquisite Ikebana’ in her home-studio, Atelier Soka, in Tokyo, she continues the theme with attention to detail - wagashi confectionery in the shape of flowers and black tea served with dried petals in the cup.

As part of the stay, I explore my super-hip Airbnb district, Silverlake. Before I know it, I’m googling Instagram-worthy brunch spots and stumble across Sawyer – all white marble tables, vaulted high ceilings and statement floral walls.

I eye up the bunch of bright chrysanthemums arranged just so on the table, watch the bartender shake up virgin cocktails, and observe the chef ’s attention to detail on my food garnish, realising the untapped potential for experience masterclasses everywhere you look on vacation.

I ponder the next ‘Trip’ on my app hit list. And then get back to Instagramming my eggs Florentine, carefully styled up with a side of sunglasses and a glossy magazine.

owards the end of last year, Chef Wolfgang Puck opened CUT Lounge, a new bar and lounge experience in the space formerly occupied by sidebar adjacent to the flagship location of his contemporary steak restaurant CUT by Wolfgang Puck at Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel. In tandem with the opening, Puck announced a new executive culinary and beverage team, leading the charge for both CUT and CUT Lounge.

Together, Wolfgang, Corporate Executive Chef/ Partner Lee Hefter and Head Chef Ari Rosenson have named Hilary Henderson as Chef de Cuisine, and Angela Tong as Pastry Chef. Both women have long histories working for the Wolfgang Puck family. Most recently, Chef Tong worked under the direction of Spago Beverly Hills Executive Pastry Chef Della Gossett, while Chef Henderson has worked alongside Chef Ari as Sous Chef of CUT Beverly Hills, in addition to several other roles within the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining collection. Rounding out the new team is Terence Leavey who joins CUT as Beverage Director, having previously worked under Phillip Dunn at Spago Beverly Hills as a sommelier.

Guests can also taste a variety of CUT favorites such as the American wagyu steak skewers, truffle grilled cheese and bone marrow toast with oxtail marmalade, as well as a selection of larger, entrée-sized options from a second menu coined “CUT Originals.”

Design Wolfgang and his wife Gelila Assefa Puck joined forces with Waldo Fernandez of Waldo’s Designs to reimagine the former sidebar. With seating for more than 60 guests, CUT Lounge now speaks to a new generation of clientele, creating a warm and sophisticated environment. T

he days of the 30 second elevator pitch has passed. The average person has the attention span of eight seconds, less than that of goldfish, and yet their spurts of attentiveness are more intense and salient increasing the importance of visual communication.

Furthermore, first impressions are formed in 50 milliseconds framing all future interactions.

Nowhere is the importance of visual communication more evident than in fashion, a $3 trillion industry, often reductively pigeon-holed as shallow and unimportant.

Yet, to do is to underestimate the importance of cultural priorities and one’s subservience to the behavior and inclinations of others. The sooner one accepts the dependence on coopting others into their way of thinking, the sooner one is able to take control of their own life situation.

Imagery is of paramount importance in the communication process. It speaks before a word is uttered and memory of it persists far beyond the spoken word. Perception is a lie, but the lie becomes the truth. It is self perpetuating, inciting status deference that slips past the conscious mind to evoke unconscious responses. Lighting, shadow, imagery, and tone supersede the world of fashion to affect all interactions and consequently, quality of life.

Consciousness of the way imagery affects the human brain can arm one against deceptions while increasing their ability to persuade.

I first became aware of the importance of perception on reputation as a high school wrestler where I witnessed how easily confidence can be relayed and conversely, overcome by belief.

We are in a constant state of persuading and being persuaded. The difference between what is

Burj Al Arab Jumeirah joined forces with AmStur Caviar, the premiere US supplier of world-class caviar, to set the Guinness World Records title for the largest tin of caviar ever created. Hoda Khachab the official adjudicator from Guinness World Records confirmed that the guidelines were all adhered to and all requirements were met, setting the new title. The record took place at an elegant event held at Dubai’s most iconic hotel at the end of last year.

The monumental tin, named “The Mashenomak” in honour of the “Great White Sturgeon” of Native American legend, was custom-made by AmStur for the occasion. O

n my first evening in Grenada, I sit on a dock overlooking a bay and order a ‘dodgy rum punch’, named – I’m assured – after the bar that serves it, rather than its ingredients.

It proves a potent and very drinkable concoction, staving off jet lag, re-setting my body clock and warming my soul, as if tuning me into Grenadian life, ahead of my stay.

I order another, then flop into bed, listening to waves break gently over Grand Anse Beach: a threemile stretch of pristine, coralline sand, said to be the most beautiful in the West Indies.

Grenada, together with its sister isles of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, form a tri-island state, about 100 miles north of Venezuela. They’re in the southernmost part of the Caribbean.

As my guide Roger puts it, in my ridiculously

short transfer to the Coyaba Beach Resort on the west coast (the drive is all of ten minutes): “If you’re looking for the very best mango, you need to climb to the top of the tree.”

Not that Grenada is known for its mangoes; this is the Spice Isle, its volcanic soil giving rise to nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon, plus cocoa, various root vegetables, affectionately known as “ground provisions”, and, of course, sugar cane, hence all the rum.

At the River Antoine Rum Distillery on the east coast (Grenada is just 21 miles long and 12 miles wide, so nowhere’s far) rum is still produced as it was in the 1700s.

The distillery, a handful of stone buildings, is powered by the river, which drives an old waterwheel that was made in Derby.

curry, and a chocolate brownie which delivers a gloriously bitter kick.

But nothing can top the cacao-infused cheesecake we discover at the House of Chocolate in St George’s, Grenada’s small capital.

After learning about life on the plantations in the tiny museum, we perch on stools resembling giant choc chip cookies and, between us, order most of the cocoa-inspired menu.

I choose a 100% chocolate shot: an espressosized cup of melted indulgence.

Opposite, is a batik studio, run by artists, Chris and Lilo, who employ local women to make the garments they decorate and dye.

Their shop is in one of the oldest buildings in town, built from bricks used as ballast on a ship that sailed from England in the 18th century.

“What brought you here?” I ask Lilo, after learning she used to live in Switzerland.

“A sail boat,” she replies. “I’m a gypsy, but

conveyor belt. Four guys are using it to play cards.

“Why aren’t you working?” I ask, mimicking the direct, but friendly, manner of most Grenadians.

“No more sugar cane,” one replies. “We’re waiting for the next lorry load.”

“Which won’t come ‘til Monday,” his mate adds, nonchalantly. (It’s presently Thursday).

Nearby, in huge cauldrons, rum-to-be bubbles like hot treacle. A saucepan, strapped to a long pole, serves as a ladle.

The end product contains 88% alcohol - too inflammable to take on a flight home. A special version, clocking in at 79%, is distilled for visitors.

My friends and I head north to the Belmont agro-tourism estate for lunch, where everything served has been grown on site. I try soursop juice, which tastes a bit like frothy grapefruit; green banana soup, which reminds me of Thai green FEBRUARY 2017 83

when I came here, I never left.”

Down the hill is St George’s Market, where women sell ground spices in neatly-labelled packets.

We stroll from here to the harbour, the Carenage, before taking in the view from the canons lining Fort George, a 17th century hilltop battery.

Beyond the funky-colored buildings surrounding the bay, a sweep of sand signifies Grand Anse beach, home to the Coyaba Resort.

Barely ten minutes later, I’m there, my towel hanging from the branch of a knobbly sea grape tree, as I take a dip in the sea.

One afternoon, I go kayaking; on another, a group of us take a catamaran to the island’s quirkiest attraction, its Underwater Sculpture Park in Molinere Bay. While divers sink to the ocean bed, there’s still plenty to see if you snorkel, since none of the sculptures are more than 25 feet deep. A mermaid flicks her sinuous tail; a ring of children, cast from local youngsters, attract a shoal of parrot fish, and from a sun-dappled gully, female figures gaze upwards, draped in coral and sand. The park was the first of its kind in the world, forming an artificial reef to encourage marine life.

While Grenada has around 70 miles of coastline, inland, there are mountains, rainforests and waterfalls. A renowned hiker, 77-year-old Telfor Bedeau, shows me round.

We meet in the mountainous Grand Etang Forest. Telfor arrives - on foot - from his village seven miles away. He’s wearing jelly shoes and is carrying a machete.

“It’s what I always take, along with a compass,” he says. “Nothing else!”

“No phone or GPS?” I ask.

“No, never. And I’ve only got lost once, in 1960, when I was 22. But I didn’t have to sleep in the bush; I found a way out anyway.”

He has no need for his machete today; our walk is on a marked path through giant ferns, bamboo and bois canoe trees, their hollow trunks once used for rafts.

At one point, we see Mount Qua Qua and the crater lake of Grand Etang, along with the Caribbean Sea on our left and the Atlantic on our right.

Below, in Beausejour Valley, there’s the bark of mona monkeys; Grenada is the only place they are found outside West Africa.

I spend my final days at True Blue Bay, a boutique resort with a small marina on the south coast. The feel is ‘driftwood chic’ - buildings are yellow, lilac and pink, and the bathroom in my waterfront duplex has wrought iron turtles and a pebble-edged mirror.

After hearing talk of “liming” (slang for taking life easy) it’s a chance to put it into practice. I relax by the pool and on my balcony, then head off for beginners’ yoga, in a pavilion set high in the trees.

“Enjoy the breeze and the sound of the sea,” our instructor, Fay, whispers. The others close their eyes, but I can’t miss the spectacular view of the bay.

It’s surpassed only by sunset, which I enjoy from a traditional, wooden sloop, the kind once used by smugglers who used to run rum between St Barts and Barbados.

As our skipper, Walter, unfurls the sails, the owner, Danny, serves us punch, warning: “You won’t taste the rum straightaway, but it’ll certainly hit you later.”

The sun disappears; the sky turns gold, then purple, then pink. But they’re not the gentle hues you find elsewhere in the world; these are bold,

riotous and exuberant, as if reflecting the spirit of this lesser-known Caribbean isle.

Of course, it could just be the rum punch talking - Danny’s cocktail finally kicking in - but why worry, when this is a country where even the minister of tourism says, “There’s a rum for every occasion, and then one just for the fun of it!”

I

don’t know how it happened, but having popped off to powder my nose, I’m now dancing in delight, with a stranger in paradise.

I’m in the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, a country which offers the ultimate in laidback luxury.

It has pristine sands, turquoise lagoons and tropical fish that sparkle and shimmer in the sea.

So it may seem odd that I’m about to rave over my resort’s restrooms, which is where I’m presently dancing. But they’re such a joyous discovery – with their sea-dappled walls, wacky music, whales’ tails, photo booth, and life-sized pictures of Kate Moss-style mermaids – they represent to me, the beginning of a love affair. Not with the guy that I bumped into and jived and joked with, but with LUX South Ari Atoll, a resort which – although this sounds well nigh impossible – offers more than just the Maldives.

But I’ll come back to that, later.

The Maldives is a chain of 26 atolls, 700km southwest of Sri Lanka. The southern isles include Hulhule, home to the international airport in the capital, Male, and Dhidhoofinolhu, where you’ll find LUX South Ari Atoll.

As we approach, by seaplane, the view is stunning: palm-covered islands, each with a cyanblue halo, float like lily pads on a sapphire sea.

Our pilot, wearing flip flops, brings us down. We glide to a halt across the glassy water. At the jetty, staff wave and shout, ‘Welcome’.

Within minutes, I feel like a glamorous castaway.

Our villa, with its palm thatch and courtyard pool, opens onto a powdery, milk-white beach; two loungers, framed by coconut trees, face the ocean.

My husband and I go for a dip, enjoy a rose-pink sunset, and watch the night sky flood with stars.

The next morning we’re sitting, in dazzling sunshine, on the roof of a dhoni, a traditional Maldivian fishing boat, scanning the sea for shadows; I seem to spot them everywhere.

But Tina, LUX South Ari Atoll’s marine biologist, knows what to look for - a shape she describes as belonging to “the biggest smile in the ocean”.

We’re searching for (harmless) whale sharks, the largest fish in the world; the biggest recorded is 12.65m long and 21.5tons. White Sands Reef, just minutes from our resort, is one of best places to find them.

Incredibly, we’re in luck...

“He’s coming towards us!” Tina shouts. “Quick!

Get in!” We grab our fins and jump into the sea.

“Another day, while snorkelling, I spot a green turtle diving below. Its patterned shell glints in the sunlight, as if a huge emerald has been lost at sea” Moments later, a flattened head emerges from the shadows; you can’t miss the colossal “smile”.

The shark’s 4m long, a juvenile. I swim beside it for quite a few minutes, keeping my distance, but close enough to feel part of its world. The spotted giant cruises against the current, sweeping the water for food. Then it disappears, ghost-like, into the deep.

Another day, while snorkelling, I spot a green turtle diving below. Its patterned shell glints in the sunlight, as if a huge emerald has been lost at sea.

with the waves.

I hold my breath and notice munching sounds; it’s a lilac and lime parrotfish, nibbling at dead coral as it cleans the reef. Occasionally, it excretes a cloud of sand. “Kids love it when I tell them they’re walking on parrotfish poop,” Tina says as we return to the shore.

LUX South Ari Atoll is one of the largest resort islands in the Maldives, at almost 2km long. A sandy lane runs the length of it, through palms and frangipani flowers. Beachside restaurants, bars and pools are hidden in the trees.

At one end is the lagoon, the crystal clear water lined with brightly-colored bean bags. We sit at the bar, a smart take on a laidback surf-shack, and listen to reggae with a bottle of rose from the resort’s exclusive Scrucap selection.

A glance at the menu tempts us to try something.

We delight in a salmon and red snapper carpaccio and the freshest tuna tartare we’ve tasted.

Everyone we chat to comments on the food; it is, without doubt, superb. At East Market, an Asian market-style buffet built over the water, we wander among sacks of rice and baskets of beans, to stalls of steaming dim sum and cook-to-order curries and stir fries.

A joke with chef Pong leads to my husband cooking his own Thai green curry, ladling in coconut milk and flavouring it with fresh lemon grass. Pong, very generously, proclaims it’s “the best he’s ever tried”.

On the sunset side of the island is Beach Rouge, with a beach club vibe, white furniture and red cushions. My twice-cooked octopus is so tasty, I choose it again during our stay, while the kulhimas (traditional fish curry) served on the terrace at the

Senses restaurant, is as fresh as the breeze that wafts in from the sea.

But it’s the resort’s little touches that excite me most, adding fun, flair and an element of surprise to this sunny island hideaway.

There’s the red, thatch-roofed phone box inviting you to phone home for free, wooden carts in little clearings offering fresh coconut and bottled water, Sanih’s ice-cream parlour with its home-made waffle cones, the open air cinema (where my husband, in jest, asks for popcorn, and the reply is “Certainly, sir”) and the cups of rich, island-roasted coffee, with whale sharks patterning the foam.

And then there’s the giant banyan tree which, in a nod to local custom (and to encourage donations for community projects), is the resort’s Tree of Wishes.

Red ribbons flutter from its branches. On each of them, a guest has written their heart’s desire: ‘I wish I was a fairy princess’, ‘I wish to be a marine biologist’ and ‘We wish for lovely memories of the Maldives’ they declare.

We spend our last two days in an extremely stylish overwater villa, with a nautical feel, a private pool and steps leading into the lagoon.

It’s the perfect place for lingering; there again, so is the spa. We go for a couple’s massage but within seconds, my husband’s asleep.

I leave him snoozing and slip into the pool. The sky turns peach, the sand glows gold and the hum of the departing seaplane reminds me we’ll be on it tomorrow. But for now, my wish is to wallow in paradise.

They say the whale shark has the biggest smile in the Maldives – me, I’m not so sure.
