ello and welcome to our December issue. This month we are obviously looking forward to some relaxation time over the holidays. But before that, there is plenty to do. As the countdown begins, delve into our A-Z of Christmas in Los Angeles for our round-up of everything – from where to take the little ones to visit Santa, to the best place to stock up your cheeseboard and buy your decorations (page 25). And all your shopping dilemmas are solved with our Christmas gift guide on page 40, where you’ll find something for everyone. ICE at Santa Monica is now open – a great way to spend time skating together and get out and about (page 18). If you’d prefer a different type of exercise in lieu of the Christmas over-indulgence, turn to page 72 where you can read about local yoga and ballet classes, or make the most of the beach and get on your bike with a Joy Ride. We also catch up with Kady Hoffman who combines exercise with art on her LA walking tours. Take a walk along the cliffs overlooking the Pacific and enjoy a color workshop and guided painting time (page 34). Also sharing the creative spotlight this issue is Artspce Warehouse on Beverly Boulevard – a leading gallery for contemporary art collectors, where you will find anything from urban and pop art to graffiti and abstract (page 20). We also find out about five of the gallery’s artists in more detail. If all of that has you needing a holiday, turn to page 82 to read about relaxing in Mauritius, and really switching off from the world. Now where’s that passport…? Enjoy the issue.

t’s a coming-of-ICE-age winter’s tale. This 2016-17 holiday season, ICE at Santa Monica is celebrating its 10th anniversary milestone in some big ways, with a grand opening party and music genre-themed skate parties each Thursday coined ‘ICE Grooves’. The opening party which took place last month, was highlighted by a rink replica birthday cake and free food stations from Pono Burger, Lemonade, Sweetgreen, Bowl of Heaven, and Yogurtland. Operated by Downtown Santa Monica, Inc., the Westside’s premier ice rink and holiday gathering with 8,000 square feet of real ice, is open until January 16, 2017 at the corner of 5th Street and Arizona Avenue.
“To ring in a decade of ice-skating escapades in Downtown Santa Monica, skaters of all sizes and skillsets gathered around a colossal birthday cake” To ring in a decade of ice-skating escapades in Downtown Santa Monica, skaters of all sizes and skillsets gathered around a colossal birthday cake, baked to serve 300, styled and iced after the rink itself. A performance by some of California’s most elite skaters broke the ice before the rink opened up with a free skate session graced by swirling faux snowfall and DJ dance jams. Guests, family and friends enjoyed food from local restaurants, an interactive wintry-themed photo-booth, live t-shirt screen-printing, and a commemorative souvenir. 18 DECEMBER 2016
The event was completely open and free to the public, and guests were invited to bring a new unwrapped gift or gift card to support the PAL Best Gift Ever Toy Drive, which provides presents to children in Santa Monica who are less fortunate than most. This year, the rink is also introducing ICE Grooves, a music themed skate party each Thursday from 7pm-10pm continuing through the skating season. The funk freezes over with a fun and eclectic DJ-powered soundscape each week. Rally friends, dress up for the set and get down! For those looking to up their technique, lessons are available through the Randy Gardner’s School of Skating, which provided 366 lessons this past season.

Artist in focus: GARY JOHN
Come Fly With Me
Gary John has been a street artist since 1985. Originally from Seattle, Washington, he moved to Venice Beach, Los Angeles in 2003 and began selling on the Venice boardwalk. After almost 10 years on the boardwalk and experiencing “a bout with homelessness,” John exploded onto the international art scene first during Art Basel Miami in 2013. John’s playfully bold work quickly gained attention and he was named one of 20 standout artists at the 2014 NY Affordable Art Fair. His artworks continue to be exhibited at major international art fairs in the United States, Asia and Europe. John cites Pablo Picasso, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat as his artistic inspiration. Other influences are comic books and American pop culture. His street artworks have a whimsical yet exciting and bold quality, inspired by classic cartoon and comic book characters rendered with acrylic paint in a bold graffiti style, on newspaper, magazine pages or cardboard. John says about his art: “I grew up in a dysfunctional, alcohol filled home. It actually pushed me away from drugs and alcohol. I have never drunk any liquor, smoked, or done any drugs. I always got lost in my art as an escape. Art is my passion. There is not enough time in the day to do all the painting I want to do. I’m consumed with it.”
Le Grande Buffet
Artist in focus: GERDINE DUIJSENS Gerdine Duijsens was born in Utrecht, Netherlands, and studied at the Art Academy and the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium. The work of Gerdine Duijsens is a synthesis between figurative and abstract art. Mostly it is abstract with figurative elements. In their unguarded moments, Gerdine displays her characters with a slight derision as their vulnerable and insecure selves, when in their seemingly unobserved moments they briefly try to escape from a world in which status, knowledge, protocols and power keep them prisoner. “There are many opportunities in your life, so you must have the courage to be open. You might not grab everything, but if you do, make it into something.” Duijsens artworks fit perfectly in the spirit of modern times where people are focused on the exteriors of something or someone. As a result, the creative imaginative power can unfold, which is most important for artist and viewer. An enormous drive and energy is apparent in all her paintings. We recognize the people on the canvasses; they are our families, our friends, acquaintances, or us. They move us and we just can’t help it; a smile wants to appear on our lips. We love them and want to have them with us because they make us happy.

Happy Beige 16-9
Artist in focus: PETRA RÖS-NICKEL Petra Rös-Nickel, born 1963 in Wathlingen near Celle, Germany, breaks completely new ground with her abstract forms of painting and expression. In her oil paintings playful, free forms as well as compositional constructions develop into textures, referencing popular European design of the fifties and sixties, particularly the textile and surface designs of that time. Her work translates the geometric and organic elements of an era which hoisted the flags of modernity and which, due to a trend to return to a rather retro style, has become topical once more, into her very own style. After a schooling in fashion design at the professional school for clothing in Bremen, 1980, Petra Rös-Nickel changed her field of study to architecture in Eckernförde, 1982. Preferring the creative aspects of the studies to the technical ones, the artist developed the basics of her painting, never denying the roots of applied design and soon ending in a refreshing, distinctive style. Since Petra Rös-Nickel shapes her painting into compositional subjects, her work can be put into different categories such as “patchwork”, “windows” and “oscillating lines”. As much as the groups may differ in their visual expression, as easy to recognise are the artist‘s distinctive compositional characteristics and methods. Essential is the color space presented in multiple layers that offers the beholder access to more profound color planes, depending on the detail. These details or scratchings and rubbings lead to various elements of tension, such as “patchwork” or harmoniouscontemplative forms (“windows”). Mostly established on large-sized tables of colors and directed towards one color world, the artist‘s oil paintings develop an energetic impact on the space they‘re displayed in, conveying her joy of life and self-confidence. Petra Rös-Nickel lives and works in Hamburg, Germany. Nickel Color Windows Left: Stripes In Black
Artist in focus: RICKY HUNT
Deep Space
Ricky Hunt lives and paints in Los Angeles. Much of his work is influenced by Egyptian hieroglyphics, graffiti and his tumultuous past that led to a paradigm shift in creativity and life in general. A brief period of drug addiction in the 1980’s led to a term of incarceration. This in turn led to the discovery of his artistic talent and personal transformation through the love of art. Philosophy, mathematics, scientific theory, poetry and astronomy are a few of the themes that run though his paintings. Hunt describes his imagery as, “Chaotic order pouring from the watery depths of my unconscious”. The unique designs with which he covers each canvas flow from him fluidly, like a melody. The harmony of the overall composition finds its way through his intricate markings into a cohesive visual statement. Hidden in the patterns and markings are limitless points of interest, constantly revealing new meanings. Hunt began to teach himself to draw in 1995. Nine months later Tiger Woods’ father Earl, commissioned a pastel portrait which he described as “The best portrait of Tiger ever painted”. From this foundation grounded in traditional drawing skills Hunt’s work transformed into the contemporary painting seen today.

Artist in focus: RON PILLER
Oxygen And Nitrogen And Helium
Los Angeles artist Ron Piller takes his inspirations from travelling extensively all his life. He has been fortunate to visit many beautiful and fascinating countries including India, Vietnam and most recently Cuba. Ron notes “every dilapidated building and car is an inspiration and feast for the eye.” Colors and architectural formations permeate Ron Piller’s artworks and create a sense of depth and curiosity. His artworks are created by layering newsprint, acrylic paint, and pencil marks on wood panels. Piller relishes the materiality of his medium, finishing the front of each work with a layer of resin to give it a reflective sheen. The sides of the artwork are finished separately, either with layers of paint or paper or both, sanded down to add a compelling look, incorporating a further dimension to the artworks. “Color and geometric order/disorder are my constant concern. Beginning each painting I seek to create a subtle but visually engaging ground which serves as a foil to the next layers of geometric shapes - all contained within or challenging the penciled grid. Balancing the shapes and colors of pieces fascinates me. Often I will place a strong color or shape anywhere, knowing that the challenge to engage it successfully is so satisfying. I finish the front of my work with resin, as it provides a window into the work. It is my desire to convey to the viewer my humble recognition of the Mystery that we live in and the spiritual which creates, infuses and envelops all.” His series of geometric abstractions consist of conversations between colors in a defined space yet at the same time the infinite. The geometric shape tries to contain the colors, but the colors demand, emerge, transform and dazzle. Fragmento

ave you ever seen magic left over from a rainstorm? Have you ever walked in a forest and thought you saw something little and enchanting out of the corner of your eye? Do you believe in Faeries? As children we believed in magic and knew in our hearts there was something enchanting out there, hidden, kind, beautiful, and filled with goodness. Do you remember these feelings? This yearning? If so, you too may have glimpsed Faeryland. Almost weekly, the winner of the Nickelodeon’s Parents’ Pick Award for “Best Children’s Theater in Los Angeles,” named “Best of Hollywood” by the Hollywood Reporter, named “Best of LA” by LA Parent and Los Angeles magazine, A Faery Hunt takes children and their families on an interactive theatrical experience. Taking place in forests and parks, A Faery Hunt has been enchanting audiences in Southern California for the past 12 years. A
“A Faery Hunt takes children and their families on an interactive theatrical experience” few times a year A Faery Hunt comes indoors at the Sunset Theatre Company in Redondo Beach. Seasonal shows are also performed yearly at Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, Celebrate Israel, and for the City of Porter Ranch. With the help of the faery folk, the children and their families go to Fairyland and embark on magical interactive adventures. In a gentle and fun way, the audience actually becomes part of each story. The shows are for children, boys and girls, and the young-at-heart. Most of the children come in costume. There is something for the whole family in the interactive original shows. The tales carry simple life-messages including kindness, forgiveness, 32 DECEMBER 2016
respect for nature, keeping a positive attitude, love for one another and to have fun. Groups and birthdays are welcome at all events. Private birthday parties are also available. Shows usually start at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $15 per person at Griffith Park, the Crestwood Hills Park and Sunset Theatre Company; and it’s $12.50 a ticket at all other locations. Tickets are $25 per person for the double events that run March August -- A Faery Hunt show plus the Fairy Queen’s Birthday Party. A Faery Hunt Tea Party is $35 per person. Other performance locations are Tarzana Community and Cultural Center, Corriganville Park, Crestwood Hills Park, Los Encinos State Historic Park, Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, There are many other shows with libraries or other children’s organizations throughout the year, which are free or have a nominal fee. Performers and original shows are available for private events. Most children come in costume. Many people bring a picnic lunch. Reservations are suggested at 818-324-6802 or at www.afaeryhunt.com Photography by Christi Anna Photography
Example shows The Missing Faery Light This show can be performed on a stage or as a walking show through a botanic garden or other outdoor space. After jumping into Fairyland and meeting up with the faeries, the audience learns that the Faery Queen’s enchanted necklace is missing! Who could have taken it? All the faery folke immediately think it’s Gerome the Gnome – whenever anything goes wrong they always blame the Gnome. But after a series of events – a duel with a Simurg – a half-man half bird – and a lot of fun, the audience helps the faery folk bring the faery light back to the Faery Queen. This show is scattered with songs.
The Lia Fail and the King of the Faeries There is an ancient tale that when human children come to Fairyland, the King of the Faeries will soon be found. And the princess’s true love. Who could be the King of the Faeries? Is it Noll the funny Troll? Could it be his funny companion, Gerome the Gnome? Only the Lia Fail – the singing Stone of Destiny -- will reveal who is the true King of Faeryland. This show is a magical musical adventure. With the help of her faery court, the children embark on an exciting quest to help the faeries find their rightful King of Fairyland. In this way, the children actually become part of the story and take part in this musical quest.

Taubman unveils plans for a $500 million re-imagination of the Iconic Beverly Center, with every aspect of the center to be transformed by Holiday 2018
T
aubman Centers, Inc. (NYSE: TCO) is embarking on a $500 million re-imagination of Beverly Center that will transform every aspect of the iconic fashion destination. Critical focus areas for the project include creating a bright, contemporary and highly accessible exterior and interior that engages the center with the surrounding neighborhood, producing an effortless arrival, parking and departure experience, and offering a perfectly curated retail lineup and superior destination dining. Beverly Center and its tenants will be open during construction which is scheduled to be completed by the 2018 holiday season. “In re-envisioning Beverly Center, we are looking to create LA’s signature urban shopping and dining experience, as well as an exciting, pedestrian-friendly anchor to one of the most creative and diverse neighborhoods in the world,” said Robert Taubman. “The center is a key asset in our portfolio, and after renovation we believe it will become one of the top ten retail centers in the nation.” “The Beverly Center holds a special place in LA’s imagination – it’s where an entire generation of Angelenos went on first dates, bought prom dresses and met up with friends on weekends,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Reimagining it for the 21st century is a tremendous investment in
36 DECEMBER 2016
making those timeless experiences possible for the next generation of Angelenos. These plans capture the spirit of ambition and innovation that is driving our city’s economic resurgence.” Los Angeles Councilmember Paul Koretz, Council District 5, added, “I am pleased to be working with the Taubmans to bring to our community a beautifully renovated and updated shopping experience at the iconic Beverly Center. Together, we are bringing a significant investment, good jobs, renewed economic activity and a neighborhoodsensitive project to Council District 5.”
The Highlights Upon completion, Beverly Center’s shoppers and diners will feel its new personality through significant changes that include: Adding a continuous ribbon of new skylights that will bathe the entire center’s elegant and contoured floor openings and curves in natural light. A shimmering new exterior that incorporates a perforated steel façade and will beautifully capture light during all parts of the day. A fresh new streetscape that combines modern architecture and drought-resistant greenery for a pleasant walking experience. A row of street-level restaurants that open the center to the vibrancy of West Third Street and embrace a pedestrianoriented environment. An additional valet off West Third Street to provide quick access to the street-level restaurants and retail. A state-of-the-art smart parking system to dramatically improve the center’s arrival and departure experience. An eighth level multi-concept gourmet food hall - THE STREET - by Chef Michael Mina. Spectacular panoramic views of the Hollywood Hills and downtown Los Angeles from THE STREET, as well as from the center’s sixth floor.
Modern, Fresh Design
The design architect for the renovation of the 886,000 sq. ft. center is Studio Fuksas of Rome, Italy. Visionaries Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, known for their distinctive designs, are responsible for numerous high-profile projects around the world, including Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (Guangdong, China), Ferrari Operational Headquarters and Research Center (Maranello, Italy), CBD Cultural Center (Beijing, China), New National Archives of France (Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, France) and many other exceptional venues. Taubman selected Studio Fuksas to transform Beverly Center into a great urban space that meets the aspirations of Angelenos and suits the world class city it calls home. Massimiliano Fuksas had this to say about architecture: “Contrary to common belief, music should be observed in order to appreciate its true essence, while architecture should be felt.”
Superior Retail & Dining
Beverly Center for decades has been an iconic fashion destination regularly shopped by locals, international visitors and those who influence celebrity style and popular culture through their work in the entertainment industry. With this renovation, Beverly Center will remain well positioned to lead the city to its fashion future while connecting with these important core customers. The center will continue to be anchored by Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s, and will have more than 100 of the world’s most coveted brands, including Apple, Burberry, COS, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Foot Locker, Gucci, H&M, Henri Bendel, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Maje, Montblanc, OMEGA, Prada, Saint Laurent, Salvatore Ferragamo, Sandro, Tiffany & Co., Traffic, Uniqlo, Versace, XXI Forever and Z Zegna. Additions to the retail lineup will be announced over the course of the project. In addition to great retail, an estimated ten dining destinations will be developed, including two by Michelin starred, James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Mina. His first is a multi-concept
gourmet food hall called THE STREET. Located on the center’s eighth floor dining terrace, THE STREET will serve an impressive array of cuisines from hawker stations reminiscent of great bazaars from around the world. The hallmark of the experience will be offerings from both Chef Mina and approximately 15-18 visiting chefs for an everchanging culinary experience. “THE STREET will feature incredibly diverse cuisine inspired by the local community and the idea of bringing people together through the universal language of great food,” said Chef Mina. “The fare will be healthy, the atmosphere casual and the overall experience will be like no other in LA.” Part of the uniqueness of THE STREET will be its sweeping views of downtown Los Angeles and the Hollywood Hills that will provide a distinctly LA experience. The center’s other new chef-driven and fast-casual restaurants, as well as Mina’s second concept, will be announced in the coming months.
A Reflection of its City
Along with shopping and dining, Beverly Center aims to provide a special place for individuals to gather to create, become inspired or simply connect with others. This will be done through special events and programs. “Our goal is for Beverly Center to draw the community together through retail, dining, art, entertainment and the other passions that connect people to Los Angeles in a meaningful way,” said William Taubman. “The center will respect creativity and will mirror the interests of its shoppers.”
The continual evolution of the merchandise mix combining luxury, contemporary and fast fashion retailers for an unparalleled shopping experience. A flexible Center Court featuring an impressive 20’ w x 35’ h LED screen, plenty of places to sit, relax and plug in, and the ability to host events, exhibitions and installations.

onald Reagan was much more than an exceptional president. His early Midwestern roots led him to radio broadcasting as announcer for the Chicago Cubs, and then to become a successful Hollywood actor with over 30 film and TV credits. His commanding presence and natural ability to unify people led to his election as the President of the Screen Actors Guild, Governor of California, and ultimately President of the United States. Malibu Discovery’s exclusive tour starts with a scenic ride through Malibu to the original Ronald Reagan Ranch and famous Paramount Movie Ranch where Reagan was filmed in numerous Westerns. Cafe. A lifetime experience! The filmography of Ronald Reagan includes many motion pictures and television episodes. Reagan’s acting career began in 1937 when he contracted with Warner Bros. Apart from his absence during World War II, he would make most of his movies with Warner Bros. With the studio he starred in such films as Dark Victory, Knute Rockne, All American and Kings Row – which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1942. During World War II, Reagan served in the Army Air Force, assigned to the film production unit. He acted and narrated military training films such as Recognition of the Japanese Zero Fighter and Beyond the Line of Duty, the latter of which later won the Academy Award for Best Short film. He returned to acting after the war but never achieved stardom. In 1952, he married fellow actress Nancy Davis. When his film roles began to dwindle in the mid1950s, Reagan turned to television, where he hosted and acted in a number of programs, most notably as host of the General Electric Theater for eight years on CBS. His acting career came to an end in 1965, and Reagan became active in Republican politics in later life, being elected to two terms as Governor of California, and serving two terms as President of the United States.

Step back in time at SADDLE PEAK LODGE
P
art roadhouse, Pony Express stop, hunting lodge, European auberge, perhaps even a hint of a bordello, Saddle Peak Lodge has been many things to many people in its long history. For 100 years— some say even more—Saddle Peak Lodge has been a place of enchantment, romance and great dining for generations of those who seek a unique experience. Nestled deep in the hills of Malibu, along the creek that flows through Las Virgenes Canyon to the Pacific Ocean, the Lodge stands under fabulous Saddle Peak—a majestic rock formation made, according to local legend, when God’s first horseman sat upon the Santa Monica mountains. In the shadow of the Peak, a colorful mix of cowboys, hunters, fishermen, oil riggers and miners bound for the gold fields of Piru Creek and the Upper Ojai stopped at the Lodge, then a

one room cabin, to swap stories, take on supplies, or simply slake their thirst with a local brew called “Hillbilly Punch”. Tales of Saddle Peak Lodge abound, in enough variety to fill several volumes. The truth, such as we know it, is not much different than we might have wished: from its origins as a way-stop and general store along a rugged mountain trail, the area surrounding Saddle Peak Lodge evolved in the twenties into a summer resort known as Crater Camp, with rustic cabins, fishing camps, motorcycle runs and healthful recreation in the mountain air. The Lodge began a general store and roadhouse for campers and neighbors, and then became a simple dry-goods, beer, and sandwich shop. The wagon wheels around the property, part of the original décor, came from different area ranches. The prisoners at the nearby prison camp made little redwood covered wagons, stone wells, and carved horses, They were displayed on the shelves 52 DECEMBER 2016
and sold for the benefit of the men. After its opening in the early summer of 1950, the lodge soon became a popular eating place for outsiders as well as a gathering spot for the local community. Guests enjoyed “Hillybilly Punch” which got its start at Crater Camp during World War II when bottle drinks were not available. Made from jugs of concentrated juices mixed together, the result was a grape juice and apple cider combination that looked exactly like wine and was loved by all the local children. After being discovered by Hollywood, it began a new era of its wildly romantic history. Featured in many movie classics, it served as resting place and roadhouse for stars from the nearby ranches of Warner Brothers, Paramount, and Twentieth Century Fox. Errol Flynn and Clark Gable, with their Bugattis, starlets, and fellow cast members, were frequent guests, bringing with them the glamour and mystery of the silver screen. From Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin, who, with Herbert Hoover, were said to have built their famous New Mexico hunting lodge with designs from the Saddle Peak, to Milton Berle, Ernest Borgnine and today’s theater, film, and music industry leaders, the Lodge has remained a Hollywood inplace. In the postwar era, the Lodge was owned by neighbors whose children still enjoy Saddle Peak today. From the early sixties to the mid-eighties the Lodge was owned and run by Bud & Jean Simmert. During that time they added a new dining room and second floor bar and decommissioned the hitching post at the front door. Bud was the cook, and Jean the hostess. Jean had memorable, sparkling lights in her hair and her beautiful landscape paintings adorned the red-flocked covered walls on the first floor, and the gold-flocked colored walls on the second. In 1985 the Lodge changed significantly, all its history marshaled toward becoming the unique establishment it is today. The entire structure was renovated by the then owner, Grand American Fare Inc., also owners of the famous Oar House in Santa Monica. The vision of its founder, Al Ehringer, created the unique ambiance that we experience at Saddle Peak today--its massive timbers and log
walls, its native rock booth, its hunting and fishing gear, its elegant saloon paintings, and its fantasy and warmth. Old friends contributed memorabilia ranging from objects of fine art to relics of the Old West. Books of every kind, moved from private libraries of guests, line beautifully crafted shelves. The badger on the south wall? A gift from a grateful diner who thought it needed to go there. An antique spoon collection, old hunting and fishing gear, dreamy landscapes, birds, animals, fish—all collected with meticulous care to recapitulate a history shared by generations of friends. The mystery of Saddle Peak and its ability to inspire every sort of tale or happening remained. Was there really a ghostly woman with long dark hair who occasionally appears at Table 41 upstairs? Was mayhem once committed by a jilted rancher in an upstairs room? What is the real origin of the dining room’s saloon paintings? Do the likes of Richard Burton or the Hollywood Rat Pack still feed the coyotes with buffalo bones thrown from the back terraces at night? Based on numerous investigations by paranormal investigators and psychics to date, Saddle Peak Lodge has five interacting energies present in the restaurant. Keep an eye out for Edith who tends to spend time on the 3rd floor, the rather gruff and rugged male who frequents the second floor, and the lady in white who is often seen in near the bar and kitchen to this day. In late 1992, Saddle Peak Lodge was purchased and revitalized by Ann Graham Ehringer, Ph.D., then an executive coach and professor of business management at the University of Southern California. Today, Saddle Peak Lodge offers secrets and charms unmatched anywhere on the California coast. Neighbors ride their horses to Sunday brunch in the elegant atmosphere. Guests return for weekly dinners at their favorite tables. Anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions are celebrated in the downstairs dining area, intimate upstairs chambers, and on the rustic patios as climate allows. Weddings on the Lodge’s stone terraces, overlooking canyons and mountains, are renowned for their scenic beauty. Corporate executives retreat to the Lodge’s private dining rooms for daytime meetings—just minutes from their offices, yet light years away in tranquility—to renew themselves and resolve their thoughts in the creative magic of the surrounding hills of the Monte Nido Valley. Saddle Peak’s spectacular natural surroundings, its history, its rustic elegance, and its passion for pleasing guests, all combine to make it the first choice for memorable dining. Our greatest pleasure, says Ann, “is having our guests return again and again, and having them feel that Saddle Peak is also ‘theirs’--their favorite place for casual dinners and special occasions with families and friends. “Serving our guests with excellence and warmth is what we do, and what we want most to do.” Saddle Peak Lodge, 419 Cold Canyon Road, Calabasas, CA 91302 DECEMBER 2016 53

Introducing Vinoteca catching up on the daily news, or drop by after work to enjoy a glass of Vermentino and montanara pizza from Naples.”

his fall, the executive and culinary team at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills introduces Vinoteca, a new Italian wine bar and espresso café adjacent to Culina restaurant. As the new go-to destination in Beverly Hills for stylish locals and visitors alike, Vinoteca will be an extension of creative pulse of Los Angeles as the city’s newest wine bar - the place to be and be seen at. “We have a very clear vision for Vinoteca,” says General Manager Michael Newcombe. “We see our guests and neighbors utilising Vinoteca as an extension of their home or office. With a newly built-out space, powerful Wi-Fi and top-notch culinary offerings to match, creatives and industry executives are welcome to visit Vinoteca any time of day to sip on an cappuccino in the morning while
54 DECEMBER 2016
Twenty-nine year old Chef Denis Dello Stritto draws inspiration from his upbringing near Naples to curate a menu of hyper-seasonal sharable plates with a focus on traditional Italian “street food.” Utilising the best produce available in California, Dello Stritto showcases the bounty of local farmers, combined with authentic ingredients shipped daily from Italy, such as burrata and olive oil. Vinoteca offers three distinct menus for breakfast, lunch, and apéritivo. Signature dishes (USD 5-15) include: • Neapolitan Montanara (Fried) Pizzas - classica, burrata, lobster, eggplant, sweet ricotta • L’Arancino – Sicilian salmon, arancino, squid ink bread crumb, meyer lemon aioli; the pear-shaped dish is a Western Sicilian specialty • Crudo – Yellowtail, swordfish carpaccio, tuna tartare, branzino carpaccio • Frutti di Mare The roots of Dello Stritto’s culinary ardour were planted during his childhood in a small farming village north of Naples, Italy. The village, Caiazzo, is historically known for the quality of its olives and more, and nearly everyone is engaged in food production. “The smell, the taste, and the honest culture were part of my upbringing,” he says. Dello Stritto combs farmers markets and fish markets each week throughout Los Angeles to inform the menus at Vinoteca. “As for the rest,” he says, reeling off Italian olive oil, cheeses, cured meats and more, “I work my connections. For the best, you need the right connections. Sixty percent of what makes a professional Italian chef is the chef, and forty percent is the quality of the product.”
Wine Program To complement Dello Stritto’s modern Italian menus at Vinoteca, Wine Director and Assistant General Manager Luca Bruno (formerly of Providence, The French Laundry, Bistro don Giovanni, and The Fat Duck) has conceptualised a unique wine experience that honours the classic, imported masterpieces of Italy, alongside their artisanal Californian descendants. Through detailed research into the vineyards of Napa, Carneros, Paso Robles, Mendocino and the Santa Clara Valley, Bruno has discovered a variety of indigenous Italian grapes cultivated in California. His wines have been carefully chosen to showcase the finest examples of the classic terroir of Italy, as well as the artistry of locally -ourced talent honouring the Italian varietals and style. “With a large selection spanning various elevations, a multitude of soil types and native Italian varietals, guests are invited to customise their selection,” says Bruno. “We want the Vinoteca experience to be educational, immersive and

authentic. Our guests will encounter a diverse array of creative wines, which will instil memories that pull them back again and again. We are also happy to curate a tasting flight or have guests design their own to taste and compare the wonders of Italy both at home and abroad.” In addition to approachable wines by the glass and bottle, Vinoteca offers 3 ounce flights as well as “Icon Wines” from the Coravin. Aperitivo cocktails (USD 14-18) include: • Il Carosello – gin, Aperol, lemon, absinthe and prosecco • Strawberry Basil Limonada – vodka, lemon, simple syrup strawberry, basil leaf and egg white • Summer in Amalfi – bourbon, Campari, pineapple, lime, ginger syrup, egg white and soda • Aperol Spritz – prosecco, Aperol, soda with orange wedge • Negroni Sbagliato – Campari, sweet vermouth, and prosecco
Vinoteca Espresso Vinoteca is designed to evoke an Italian sensibility with modern utility, which effortlessly transforms each morning into Vinoteca Espresso. Curated by Assistant General Manager/Coffee Director Jeff Villa, the coffee hideaway is equipped with an elegant, multi-tiered, eight hour drip, cold brew coffee maker (Yama), featuring South roast imports from Caffè Umbria, founded by a multi-generational Italian family based in Seattle. Open daily at 6:30 am, guests and locals are invited to stop in to Vinoteca for a morning menu consisting of hardto-find housemade pastries baked daily starting from 3:30 am, in addition to freshly squeezed juices and açai bowls. Twists on traditional Italian pastries crafted by Chef Federico Fernandez (who hails from Buenos Aires, where there is a large Italian influence), the decadent lineup includes:
• Sfogliattele - scalloped, shell-shaped Italian pastries filled with lemon ricotta, native to Campania in southwestern Italy • Connoncini – cannoli-shaped pastry from Verona that is traditionally stuffed with cream, Chef Fernandez fashions the Vinoteca version with hazelnut cream • Croissant - butter and almond • Cheddar Bacon Scone • Muffins • Pain au Chocolat In the coming months, world-renowned Four Seasons Artistic Floral Director Jeff Leatham known for his brilliant creations at Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris and who has recently returned home to the Beverly Hills property plans to debut a retail floral stand with custom arrangements for guests to grab on-the-go.
Design The reinvigorated Culina Bar captures the spirit of the Vinoteca tradition and adds greater dimension to the experience of an already successful Italian restaurant in Los Angeles. Drawing on the Vinoteca theme, the design direction combines the cultural legacy of Italy and “the sophistication of the simple” with sensitive design to elevate the overall guest experience and position the bar as an easy, relaxed and fun destination for authentic Italian flavours and experiences. Like the menu itself, the material palette relies on the beauty of nature: large slabs of Italian marble for the bar top, natural wood for the shelves, a custom glassed-panel wine display, and accents in brass. Large glass windows offer a view to a warm outdoor patio dining area. The result is a stylish and luxurious environment imbued with a sense of residential comfort.

After a couple of seasons skirting on the style peripheries, the velvet revolution has arrived in full force for AW16. Roberto Cavalli and Alberta Ferretti took the tailored route with languid suiting in Milan, while Preen’s standout rouched dresses sent the front row wild in London, and Valentino’s mustard yellow swing dress set hearts racing in Paris. Dressing for Success
Greg Chapman’s Executive tailored clothes in Beverly Hills
G
reg Chapman of Beverly Hills has been dressing celebrities, professional athletes, politicians, and top corporate executives since 1968. Unlike clothing that is mass-produced, purchased off-the-rack, and then altered to fit, Greg Chapman’s Executive Tailored Clothes are individually created for the look and feel of power and success. With his unique approach to making custom clothing, the suits, jackets, pants and other items he tailors perfectly for his demanding and sophisticated clients like no other clothing they have ever worn – not even expensive designer suits. “Historically, men have relied on a tailor to maintain their imagine, just as men today rely on attorneys, bankers, accountants and other professionals for their individual expertise. With the mass production of clothing and pre-manufactured suits, men and women no longer understood how their clothing should fit, or the advantages of projecting an image that indicates their status in class or society” Greg says. “Today, people still judge others by how they appear”, he adds, “and it’s smart to use that to your advantage. My clients, both men and women, understand that designer suits and department store salespeople are no substitute for a tailor who – with wealth a wealth of experience – guides a person through a lifetime of successful business and social advances. There is no substitute for custom made clothing produced by a good tailor.”

“Invest 1 hour with Greg Chapman and for the rest of your life receive perfect fitting clothing ordered in either in showroom or by phone and shipped directly to you without fittings, alterations or shopping!” Greg’s clients agree, “It’s simply impossible to look successful in ill fitting clothes,” says Frederick J. Schwab, a client and former CEO of Porsche NA. “A well tailored suit from Greg Chapman is comparably priced to those in a better men’s store, but is carefully designed to fit in all ways, and the quality really shows. Once you wear a Greg Chapman suit you will never go back to the rack.” The Chapman approach, Greg says, “is not to be confused with ‘made-to-measure’ tailoring. With his method, and individual pattern is made that reflects 35 separate measurements for each client as well as his unique posture. “Once a client, you’ll become accustomed to a superior fit, feel, and look to your clothes that will prompt you to replace every item in your wardrobe with custom clothes,” Greg says. “And your pattern is easily altered for weight changes.” Clients can visit Greg’s showroom store in Beverly Hills on S. www.gregchapman.com The "Fit" of your clothing tells others your rank in society and the degree of respect that you should be accorded. As in the military, a General attracts greater success than a Private. Our uncommonly rare hand made custom clothing is the way to project the look of success and to enjoy optimum results.
The Jacket shoulders are too wide. The Jacket collar box is too big and gaps away from neck. The Jacket front panels are too small to close to the center of his chest.
The Jacket is too full across his flat back due to his erect posture. The Sleeves wrinkle due to the backward hang of his arms. The Jacket waist length is too long for his high waist causing the center vent to pull open.
The roll under his waistband is due to his sway back. The sagging crotch depth, proportioned to his chest size, is too long and the seat cut is too round causing folds.
Greg Chapman’s Executive Tailored Clothes 147 So. Robertson Blvd., Beverly Hills, Ca. 90211 Tel: 310-657-8487
The elegant perfect fitting suit on the right was made from an individual pattern made to our client's unique shape, posture and distribution of some 35 separate measurements. The larger front panels accommodate his full chest without having to put him in a larger size off-the-rack suit with shoulders too wide. The sleeves were set into his custom made jacket to accommodate the backward hang of his arms, the result of his erect, almost military posture! His pattern addresses each aspect of his physique separately, the depth of his crotch and the shape of his seat address his required out seam and inseam measurements, having nothing to do with the size of his chest.

The brainchild of business partners Michelle Greco and Lindsey Harding – both life-long athletes and permanent beach dwellers – Joy Ride endeavors to combine their two greatest passions: playing sports and being at the beach. As a ‘hands-on’ owner/ operator, Michelle Greco will personally accompany each bike tour sharing a wealth of knowledge of the city, including: local eateries and hot-spots, culturally significant landmarks and topographical highlights like where to find the most dazzling, romantic, and picture-perfect views. When requested, your tour will include historical details and interesting factoids – and possibly an urban myth or two – providing a local’s perspective of the beach. Each tour will
include short stops along the way to eat and shop and (of course!) snap a selfie or maybe take a picture with a minor celebrity, an exotic local, or a new friend (possibly all the same person). Along with a love for all things sporty and beachy, Joy Ride represents Greco’s commitment to providing superlative service and top-grade amenities to her guests. For those who have chosen the “all-inclusive tour”, once the ride is done, they will be allowed use of all of Joy Ride’s equipment at Santa Monica Beach, north of the pier, directly west of Joy Ride’s base camp. Every piece of equipment from the beach chairs to the boogie boards – and most especially, the beach cruisers – are brand-new, which means immaculate, squeaky clean and in ‘perfect-working order’. Joy Ride is the only bike tour in Los Angeles which can guarantee you will see a celebrity – since both owners and operators have played professional basketball both in the WNBA and overseas and are bona -fide celebrity athletes!
Michelle Greco was a top scoring, ball-stealing phenom guard at UCLA. She led the Pac-10 in scoring in 2002-03 (18.9 ppg) and 2000-01 (19.9), she was named first team all Pac-10 in her junior year and finished her college career second in Pac-10 history in steals (288). She then went on to play in the WNBA, where she helped the Seattle Storm win the 2004 championship.
Lindsey Harding played basketball for Duke University, and has been called their “greatest point guard ever.” In fact, her jersey (#10) is only the second ever to be retired in the history of the women’s program. Her distinguished college career led to her being the WNBA’s #1 overall first round draft pick in 2007. In 2013, she was the starting point guard for the LA Sparks and has since been signed (as a free agent) by her current team, the Phoenix Mercury.

Back in frizz-ness There’s finally some good news for those who spend half their life struggling to control a mass of curly hair... It’s officially back in fashion - and the more natural the better. By Kate Whiting, Press Association
C
urls were out in force at the AW16 shows - from beachy waves to tight ringlets, volume and texture were king in complete contrast to the sleek, poker straight SS16 look. It’s catching on in Hollywood too, with Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks stepping out at the recent opening of Vivienne Westwood’s Paris store with her flame-red locks tumbling to her shoulders in loose ringlets spirals. It’s about time, says Michele Scott-Lynch, the curly founder of haircare brand Boucleme (www.boucleme.co.uk). “When I was growing up, curly hair was largely ignored by the beauty industry. There was no advice on caring for curls, no curly role models and absolutely zero effective products on the market. Hairdressers would encourage you to straighten it, so you couldn’t even rely on them for tips,” she says. “The internet and social media changed all this: it became a mine of information as curly girls started sharing their daily routines and favorite products, and this strong global curly community just grew and grew.”

5 TOP TIPS FOR NATURAL CURLS Ready to banish your straighteners and let your barnet bounce free? Here are Michele Scott-Lynch’s top tips on embracing your natural curls... 1. The most important thing is to understand that frizz is a sign your hair lacks moisture - with proper hydration, frizz will transform into a wave/curl. A little bit of frizz is also your friend, as it helps give volume and shape to your curls.
2. Weekly deep conditioning helps boost moisture levels and if curls are dry, try leaving your conditioner in, rather than washing out. This, plus using a non-foaming (paraben and sulphate-free) hair cleanser, can be a game-changer.
3. At night, protect curls by tying them up in a loosely on top of your head. If your hair isn’t long enough, try using a hair net.
4. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase helps prevent frizz due to friction (it’s also great for a line-free face in the morning!).
5. Find a hairdresser who specialises in curls; they’ll have a greater understanding of the best products to use and how to dry/ style your hair. Curly hair is best cut dry, when you can see where the curls sit naturally. When wet, curly hair stretches and it’s harder to work out the natural spring factor. If a hairdresser mentions razoring your hair to lose bulk, run a mile. Fortunately, there are more and more curly hairstylists popping up.

Aquis Lisse Luxe Hair Towel Towel drying can add to the frizz, warns stylist Phil Smith, who has a Be Gorgeous Curly Locks range. “Instead, tilt your head forward and using a T-shirt, gently squeeze to remove any excess water.” Or invest in this Aquis Towel, which uses Aquitex fibres to quickly wick water away, meaning fewer breakages and less frizz. $30 (www.aquis.com)

Chinese tourist carefully positions herself on the front of the widebeamed luxury catamaran, adjusting the straps on her sundress before raising a selfie stick like a conductor’s baton for another smiling picture. But try as she might, she can’t quite capture the pod of dolphins in the sparkling Indian Ocean, that she was trying to feature as a backdrop. Eventually, she settles for a picture just of herself – and misses the dolphins completely. She may have posted that picture of her vacationing in Mauritius on Instagram or Facebook, but the scenario is a sharp reminder of how easy it is to miss really amazing things when your sights are on social media. We head for the Heritage Awali Golf and Spa Resort, offering a plethora of sporting distractions and an impressive nature reserve on its doorstep, in the wilder, less commercial south of the island. Set on the former sugar estate of Domaine de Bel Ombre, the African-themed hotel, featuring a decor of tribal art, drums and masks, is one of two neighboring five-star golf and spa resorts in the same group – the other is Le Telfair – which share each other’s facilities. We visit the C Beach Club, a chic hangout for sports lovers and sun worshippers alike, where water sports on offer include kite surfing, paddle boarding and water skiing, and gradually begin to switch off. Boredom doesn’t feature - we scale the long sandy beach on Segways, practise our swings on the driving range, snorkel in search of angel fish and silver pipers, and detox further when we have coconut oil, powder and other derivatives slathered on us in the spa, resulting in sighs and smiles in equal measure. The shallow lagoons and steady winds of the southwest coast make Bel Ombre a terrific kite surf location, an exciting distraction for any teenager. We discover, though, that you have to master flying a 84 DECEMBER 2016
kite the size of a small tent on land before taking to the water, so anyone expecting to be kite surfing like a pro after one lesson should think again. Mealtimes become a pleasure, the dishes reflect the different cultures and the Indian, Chinese, Creole and French influences of the island. Minus social media, my companion and I appreciate the cuisine more; the fresh local seafood, the steaks from South Africa, the rich mix of Indian spices which so often permeate the food. Later, we sit in the open-air bar with our drinks, a pack of cards and we laugh, talk like we haven’t talked for a while.
“Mauritius isn’t just a fly-and-flop destination with paradise beaches, though. It also has mountains, volcanoes, waterfalls and nature reserves”
Mauritius isn’t just a fly-and-flop destination with paradise beaches, though. It also has mountains, volcanoes, waterfalls and nature reserves. The Domaine de Bel Ombre is home to the Frederica Nature Reserve, a former sugar cane estate which has been transformed into a 1,300-hectare conservation area, run in conjunction with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation. It’s home to Java deer, wild boar, long tailed macaque monkeys and a plethora of birds, although we’re centuries too late to spot the long-extinct flightless dodo, endemic to Mauritius, whose last confirmed sighting was in 1662. Wide open grassy plains overlook the coastline, leading to a green canopy of forested flora and fauna in the upper wetlands, which shelter rare plants and birds, streams and waterfalls, eucalyptus, bamboo and princess palms. Will and I embark on a 4x4 buggy trail - the more adventurous can do it on quad bikes – with our guide Nitish, in the hope of spotting some real wildlife. Driving along a rough track which slices through fields of sugar cane, we stop at the reserve entrance where we dip the soles of our trainers in disinfectant, while the vehicle’s tyres are cleaned with the same solution, to protect the reserve’s fragile ecosystem from the threat of disease from the outside world. Once through the gates, the 4x4 bumps precariously along rocky ground before reaching an open expanse where Nitish stops, pointing to some activity in a huge albizia tree, from which a colony of fruit bats, the island’s only endemic mammal, are hanging. In another tree, we see a flash of vivid emerald green as a pair of echo parakeets, an endangered species, takes flight. Along the way we spot deer, nearly run over numerous pheasants, examine great termite nests on thick black ebony trees and seek out the common grazing spots of wild boar. Exploring further on foot, Nitish tells us about invasive plant species, botanical plants introduced by the colonists and medicinal plants, before we reach a cascading waterfall where you can swim. On the journey back, we stop to sample the sweet sap from sugar cane - still the main industry of Mauritius - as Nitish breaks off a growing cane, shows us how to strip the stalk and chew the tough fibre inside before spitting it out. It tastes, well, as
you’d expect, sweet, but in a subtle way. Leave the luxury tourist resorts and you enter a different world. Colonial-style houses sit on the mountain slopes, while on the southern coastal road to Souillac, long fronds of banyan trees sway in the breeze and tall, slender conifer-like filao trees provide shade along the glorious beaches. Makeshift independent stores are peppered along the southern coastal villages, while locals sell coconuts, pineapples, bananas and mangoes at roadside stalls to make ends meet. Buses are crammed with people either going to work or going to school, and traffic is often heavy. It may seem a frugal lifestyle but the people we meet are happy. Most Mauritians choose to stay on the island, working in agriculture or the tourism industry. All the staff we encounter in the hotels are locals. As we leave this paradise island, Will’s phone starts pinging with messages and I feel my burgeoning email box beckoning – but it was great to look up from our phones for a while. riving through Cemovsko Polje vineyard, I watch with amazement as rows upon rows of never-ending vines (11.5 million to be exact) flash past my eyes in beautiful green and brown bursts. Montenegro isn’t a destination I’d usually associate with wine production, but this eastern European country neighboring Croatia lays claim to the largest vineyard in Europe, and produces tipples to rival France, Spain or Italy. I’m visiting in September, nearing the end of harvest season. A light breeze carries the laughter of merry pickers hard at work as the sun beats down from a clear blue sky. growing conditions. The vast, limestone hills attracted winemakers in the early 1960s, and it took nearly five years to plant 11 million vines on the tricky terrain, as there was more rock than soil covering the vineyard. But it was worth the effort. “95% of our grapes are hand picked,” says our guide, Maria, as we climb to the highest point of the vineyard. “We produce 17 million bottles of wine every year.” Eager to taste what’s on offer, we head to the Sipcanik wine cellar. Entering the dark cavern is extremely eerie; the large tunnels were once used by the Yugoslavian Air Force as an underground airbase. In 2008, it was turned into a wine cellar. Dry and cool, with magnificent, high ceilings, the temperature stays at a constant 18 degrees, making it perfect for storing quality wine. Here we sample one of the region’s most popular

My personal favorite is the Stari Podrum 2011 Merlot; the combination of sour cherry and spice is the ideal accompaniment to some Montenegrin mature cheese. I walk beneath the small town’s towering defensive walls, built between the ninth and 19th centuries, and lose myself in narrow, winding streets. Further along the coast is the baroque town Perast, where we stop for lunch at open-air restaurant Conte. We order a huge sharing platter of fresh sea bass, prawns, squid and octopus, and sip local rose. Two islets sit in my line of view: Our Lady of the Rocks, an artificial land mass, and St George, home to a 12th century abbey concealed by Cyprus trees. Both places look as if they’ve been plucked from fairytale book, but here - as I’m learning - there are surprises at every corner. SKYGARDEN TO REDEFINE LUXURY LIVING IN THE BEL AIR HILLSIDE Perched high above the city, $100 million development will be among the famed neighborhood’s crown jewels
M
ercer Vine, an emerging leader in Los Angeles luxury real estate, has announced the listing of Skygarden, an expansive luxury development located at 10721 Stradella Court in the Bel Air hills. Developed by Woodbridge Luxury Homes and designed by SAOTA, a South Africa-based architectural firm, in collaboration with agency of record Woods + Dangaran, Skygarden is scheduled for completion in late 2018 and is expected to fetch a sales price of more than $100 million.
104 DECEMBER 2016
“Everything about Skygarden is carefully planned to establish it as one of the top homes in a legendary luxury neighborhood,” says Adam Rosenfeld, founding partner at Mercer Vine and one of the property’s listing agents. “The land was selected and the compound was meticulously designed to pair the private Bel Air lifestyle with the most modern design elements, amenities and entertainment spaces. It will be a modern-age palace.” Designed to provide contemporary comfort and pay homage to mid-century-modern styles,
“The tension builds from a subtle first impression at the street, to the powerful all-encompassing vantage point of the entrance hall”
to experience all the home’s views before entering a double-height dining hall that sits on an axis with a main staircase that wraps around a glass elevator. “The arrival sequence is defined by a series of events -- punctuations along a journey – revealing the building slowly as one’s frame of reference changes moving through the spaces,” says architect Mark Bullivant. “The tension builds from a subtle first impression at the street, to the powerful allencompassing vantage point of the entrance hall.” The home will have six bedrooms, including a 2,700-square-foot master suite, guest house, three staff rooms, theater, wine cellar and gym. There will also be a spa that includes a sauna, steam room, and hot and cold plunges. The infinity-edge pool will have an overall length of 84 feet and allow for 60 feet of lap-swimming. These amenities will be surrounded by signature trees and meticulous landscaping that give the sense of a “garden in the sky” overlooking Los Angeles. Skygarden will be a collection of structures built on multiple levels of the Bel Air hillside. The architect utilizes an open-air concept to create 300-degree panoramic views of downtown, Culver City, the Pacific Ocean and Stone Canyon Reservoir. This concept is paired with a series innovative screens that ensure that these incredible views never sacrifice privacy or solar protection. The home’s unrivaled entry will include a 150foot water feature that appears to flow directly into an infinity pool. The entrance hall positions visitors DECEMBER 2016 105
