What Is a Western? Film Series: Smoky (1946) Bringing together three movies that rely on the land as an integral character in the story, the April– June block of films is guest curated by James D’Arc, curator at BYU Motion Picture Archive and author of ‘When Hollywood Came to Town: The History of Movie-Making in Utah’. These films demonstrate why the varied landscapes of Utah became popular as filming locations within the Western genre. From the famed Will James novel of a drifter cowboy in search of a runaway horse, this seldom-screened Western is accented by David Raksin’s lyrical score and Burl Ives’s beguiling renditions of great songs. Beautifully filmed in Technicolor in Zion National Park and various Western U.S. locations, Smoky is a well told contemporary story of a man and his love for a horse. DIVE IN AT THE Natural history museum of Los Angeles County In the virtual reality experience from Wevr participants journey down to coral reefs, then interact with an 80-foot whale and other awe-inspiring ocean species UNTIL April 28

16 APRIL 2017

T

he Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLA) presents theBlu: An Underwater VR Experience, a deeply immersive virtual reality series that allows audiences to explore the wonder and majesty of the ocean through different habitats and come face-to-face with some of the most awe-inspiring species on the planet. The VR series was created by Wevr, a Venice, California-based VR studio. Highlights of the three environments in the six minute experience include: an encounter with an 80 foot blue whale as it swims past a sunken ship; a magnificent undersea migration on the edge of a shallow coral reef, with turtles and swarms of jellyfish gliding by, and colorful anemones reacting to the guest’s touch; and a deep dive into the an iridescent abyss, where hidden creatures including angler fish and squid appear with the use of a virtual flashlight. “The museum has integrated technology and multi-media into our newer exhibits and is now exploring ways to enhance digital engagement with the natural world. This iconic deep dive VR experience from Wevr brings us to a new level of interactivity – and our visitors come along for the ride,” said Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, NHMLA Director and President. “Engaging and inspiring visitors is what we do – and theBlu: An Underwater VR Experience is beautiful, powerful storytelling. It would not surprise me if the next generation of marine biologists – and VR developers – are inspired by this exhibit.” theBlu: An Underwater VR Experience is directed by Jake Rowell (Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, Superman Returns), and has already been recognized as one the most iconic room scale VR experiences to date (a Sundance Film Festival 2016 New Frontiers selection). Wevr’s team consulted with museum scientists during the making of theBlu to help inform the creative process. “TheBlu: An Underwater VR Experience has become an icon in the VR community, and is both immensely engaging and informative. We are delighted that the Natural History Museum is hosting this immersive simulation that we know will captivate visitors of all backgrounds and age groups,” says Wevr co-founder

and CEO Neville Spiteri. Visitors to theBlu: An Underwater VR Experience begin their journey in a lounge area inside the museum gallery space, where they are acclimated to the technology ahead amid glowing NHMLA ocean specimens on display and projections of reef footage. They’re then led into five “pods” in the gallery, and assisted as they put on HTC Vive virtual reality headset. Friends and families, at a seating area nearby, can watch the action on a monitor where they can see the user’s interactive underwater experience streaming in real time. “Here’s what it’s like, from someone who has done a lot of SCUBA diving: It’s cool to see all those plants and animals, and not be underwater and cold – especially the deep-sea chapter, where you couldn’t even dive in real life,” says Dr. Chris Thacker, NHMLA Fish Curator. “It’s incredible to see all the animals up close, particularly the whale and the turtle, and interact with jellyfish and see how they respond. The experience is scientifically accurate and does a good job of replicating what it’s like underwater, but you’re just standing there, warm and dry.” NHMLA is at 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90007

Tickets and info Advanced timed tickets are required and can be purchased online at nhm.org now. Tickets are $8 for Members and $10 for Non-members. Children must be 10 years of age or older to participate, due to safety reasons and ability to follow instructions. Guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

THE WEIRD AND THE WONDERFUL W

hat better time to visit ‘the hoppiest place in the world’ than at Easter? The Bunny Museum is a living museum (Steve and Candace’s home), devoted to a world-class collection of bunny items. The extensive Bunny Museum collection began back on Valentine’s Day in 1993 with just one bunny, Steve Lubanski’s gift to his girlfriend, Candace Frazee. They married on May 21 the following year and since then, they have given each other a bunny gift every day as a love token. Over the years, the bizarre museum has become the proud recipient of several awards, including the Best Weird Museum in Los Angeles, and the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of bunny items in the world, a record they have since broken themselves. Steve and Candace opened up their home in Pasadena to the public in 1998, with approximately 7,000 bunny items of every size, shape, and matter. That collection has now grown to over 33,000 bunny artefacts. In March of this year, after running out of space, Steve and Candace opened a new location for the collection in Altadena – a former art gallery just five minutes from the original location. Here, they are now displaying the complete collection including nine Rose Parade

float bunnies, antiques, furniture, contemporary art, and antiquities. The artefacts in the museum are grouped into different categories such as cookie jars and bunny characters, to bunnies with carrots, and bunny tribal masks. There are over 100 categories. Amongst the ever-expanding collection of ‘cute bunnies only’, there are ceramic bunnies, stuffed bunnies and a Rose Parade float bunny from the City of Downey upon which they planted ivy (it took five years to completely cover it). The strangest pieces may be the freeze-dried rabbits, which were once household pets and are now kept in a glass display case. They sit alongside one of the most popular items in the museum – ‘Elvis Parsley’ an Elvis-themed rabbit. There are also live rabbits at the museum that children can pet and feed. The couple say that they often get visitors as surprising as the museum itself – groups come in completely dressed from head-to-toe in bunny paraphernalia, and often friends are brought in as a surprise, with no idea where they are going, sometimes blindfolded! It is certainly a place for fun. The Bunny Museum is open 365 days a year from 11am-6pm. $8, members free, kids 4 and under free. 2605 Lake Avenue Altadena, CA 91001 Tel. The Blessing of the Animals has been a part of Olvera Street since its founding in 1930, but its practice dates back to the 4th century, when San Antonio De Abad was named the patron saint of the animal kingdom and began to bless animals to promote good health. In the early days of the pueblo, the priest from La Placita Church would bless the livestock of the farmers to keep them healthy and productive, benefiting the entire community. The practice continued when Olvera Street opened in 1930, but the animals were a little different. No longer was the blessing limited to cows, horses and goats, but the blessing began to include all animals, especially pets. Many four-legged friends are seen members of the family, and the blessing is open to all. Whether they live on land, in water, or fly in trees, all animals are welcome to receive a blessing from Archbishop Jose Gomez. While the blessing is rooted in Catholic tradition, you do not have to be Catholic to participate. Blessing begins at 2pm and lasts approximately an hour. Entertainment from 12pm-5pm.. Line to receive blessing begins at 1pm and will form at Father Serra Park, located between Alameda and Los Angeles Street. 125 Paseo De La Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90012 APRIL 2017 21

EXHIBITION FOCUS John McLaughlin Paintings: Total Abstraction T

he Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents John McLaughlin Paintings: Total Abstraction, the artist’s first solo retrospective in 20 years. One of the most important Southern California artists of the postwar period, John McLaughlin (1898–1976) created a focused body of geometric paintings that are entirely devoid of any connection to everyday experience and inspired by the Japanese notion of ma (the void). Using a technique of layering rectangular bars on adjacent planes of muted color, McLaughlin created works that provoke introspection by making the viewer, not the artist, their subject. The exhibition is organized chronologically and consists of 52 paintings and a selection of collages and drawings that establish McLaughlin as one of the foremost innovators of total abstraction.

“John McLaughlin is one of the most important Southern California artists of the postwar period” John McLaughlin Paintings is curated by Stephanie Barron, senior curator and head of modern art, and Lauren Bergman, assistant curator in modern art. McLaughlin was included in the now-landmark 1959 exhibition Four Abstract Classicists, organized by the Los Angeles County Museum, alongside Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, and Frederick Hammersley. He was also the subject of four major museum retrospectives, at the Pasadena Art 22 APRIL 2017

Museum (1963), the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. (1968), the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art (1973), and the Laguna Art Museum (mounted posthumously in 1996). Yet, despite this success, he never received widespread attention during his lifetime. He has subsequently become a hero among later generations of Los Angeles artists across a broad range of disciplines and styles. “John McLaughlin is one of the most important Southern California artists of the postwar period, and the opportunity to share some of his most critical works in this retrospective is both exciting and long overdue,” said Michael Govan, LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director. “Following the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945 1980 initiative, it was a natural decision for LACMA return to some of the individual artists whose work elicited the greatest sense of revelation, most recently with Noah Purifoy (Noah Purifoy: Junk Dada in 2015) and now John McLaughlin. John McLaughlin Paintings: Total Abstraction features the most comprehensive range of his abstract experimentations.” Stephanie Barron, senior curator and head of modern art at LACMA, states, “John McLaughlin is one of the foremost innovators of total abstraction. In the 40 years since his death, he has remained something of an artist’s artist, held in high esteem by a coterie of artists, critics, collectors, and curators but otherwise virtually unknown. Although he may rank as the first great artist to emerge in Southern California after the war, McLaughlin’s modest, rigorous, and tough abstract paintings are still awaiting discovery.”

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Vera Lutter Until March 2018

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is pleased to announce an artist project and residency with Vera Lutter that will take place until March 2018, culminating in an exhibition in fall 2018

The LACMA exhibition is accompanied by the first hardcover monograph on the artist, published by Prestel/Del Monico Books with essays by exhibition curator Stephanie Barron; artist Tony Berlant with curator Lauren Bergman; critic and independent curator Michael Duncan; Ilene Susan Fort, LACMA’s Gail and John Liebes Curator of American Art; and Russell Ferguson, professor of art at University of California, Los Angeles. Unique to the exhibition is a special collaboration with artist Roy McMakin, Twelve Chairs Made for the Occasion of a John McLaughlin Retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2016), comprising 12 of McMakin’s signature slat-back chairs – created first in the 1980s and inspired by McLaughlin’s work – which will provide seating in the exhibition galleries. Lutter makes large-scale photographs using one of the oldest optical technologies still in use, that of the camera obscura. Long before the invention of photography, it was known that if light traveled through a tiny hole into a darkened room, an image of the external world (off which the light rays had reflected) would re-form upside down on a wall opposite the tiny opening. Lutter herself began to use a camera obscura in the mid-1990s after moving to New York City. Living at the time in an apartment in midtown Manhattan, she transformed one room into a room-sized camera obscura to document the city outside her window. Since then, Lutter has adopted the camera obscura as her singular working method. She builds enormous cameras out of plywood, or adapts rooms or portable structures (such as shipping containers) in order to photograph a range of sites and subjects. For her residency at LACMA, Lutter will undertake an ambitious project with three components. First, using a custom-built mobile camera, she will document exterior views of the buildings on LACMA’s campus that are slated for demolition to make room for a new building for the museum’s permanent collection. Second, working with LACMA curators, Lutter will photograph the interiors of selected galleries to create images that follow in the grand tradition of 19th-century “gallery paintings” of museum interiors. Third, using her camera obscura method, she will photograph paintings in LACMA’s permanent collection. Although Lutter has previously photographed classical and modern sculptures, this will be her first time using her camera obscura to photograph twodimensional works of art.

About Vera Lutter Born in Germany, Lutter was educated at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, Germany, and received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. In 2015–2016 her work was the subject of a mid-career retrospective, Inverted Worlds, organized by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (traveled to New Orleans Museum of Art). Other solo exhibitions of her work have been mounted by Carré d’Art - Musée d’art contemporain, Nîmes, France; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Kunsthaus Graz, Austria; Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland; and Dia: Beacon in Beacon, New York. Josephine Stevens meets Kerry Feirman, 34, from Westwood Los Angeles, to talk about her passion for tennis and her charity work with CARE Rescue LA

30 APRIL 2017

KERRY’S TOP TENNIS TIPS I always recommend starting off by getting a lesson from a pro if you are just starting out in the sport. If you can afford regular lessons for a while, even better. But at least start with one. Tennis is so technical that it is important to learn the proper strokes, the way to hold the racquet, way to move – otherwise you can end up really inhibiting your progress, or even worse injured.

L

os Angeles resident Kerry Feirman seemed destined to be a tennis star from a young age. When she was just 10 years old she was playing in the up to 12’s division and winning, and when she was 12 she was coming out top again in the up to 15’s division. She played the sport competitively her whole life and into her first year at UCSB, which is a division 1 school. “Tennis is, to me, the most incredible sport out there, just look at the range of people who play the sport. Tennis is so versatile, it’s played everywhere in the world and it is one of the only sports that can be played forever. From kids, to teenagers, to adults, to senior citizens… people of all ages can play!” Her love for tennis was put on a back burner for a while during her college years, where the lure of the complete ‘college experience’ was too tempting to resist. “At that young age I just didn’t have my “head in the game”, she says. “Your social life is

tournaments again, following the sport, and that’s what led me in to what I do now. My ship had sailed with regards to going pro, so now I still live the passion via writing and talking about tennis.” Nowadays Kerry works in tennis journalism, hosting and vlogging. She also has her own tennis outlet via YouTube where many avid followers check out her videos on a regular basis. “It’s a small community, so over the three years that I have been writing, producing, and hosting the show and creating content I have become well known in the

Practice practice practice! Get out on the court as much as possible. Even hitting against a ball machine. Join local leagues. Jump in to local group classes. These things are also great for meeting new people to play tennis with, or even a great way to just make new friends. The tennis community is generally a really warm and welcoming community.

Have fun! Nothing is worth doing unless you enjoy doing it. So although even at amateur levels things can get really competitive, don’t ever forget to have fun. If you’re not having fun, then you’re not doing something right.

“Tennis is so versatile, it’s played everywhere in the world and it is one of the only sports that can be played forever” with the people on your team, and that’s it for the most part. So, instead of continuing with tennis I joined Delta Gamma sorority.” Being so committed to the sport can also take up a lot of time. “A college sport is a full time job basically – you wake up in the morning and work out, practice in the afternoon, have mandatory study hours at night, travel to compete, and so on and so on.” It meant that she didn’t pick up a racquet for several years, but ultimately, the game lured her back. “I really missed the sport, so after all those years I got back into playing recreationally, going to APRIL 2017 31

Her line is stunningly beautiful, and the explosion of popularity of the bags has been incredible! While in Miami one of the stories I am honored to be able to cover is about this admirable, driven, successful woman – Megan Tierney – and her company. Being that she has been a friend for going on 20 years now, to have our lives come full circle like this is really touching. She’s always been one of my biggest supporters, and I of her. And now here we are able to share our hard work with each other. It’s crazy and magical how the world works sometimes.” www.louiseandeleanor.com

community.” This means that she frequently is hired to either create content for Tennis establishments such as TennisIdentity.com Magazine, YTEX Strings, Tennis Warehouse and Cliff Drysdale’s Association, or she is contracted to cover events and tournaments. Last month she covered Taste of Tennis and Tennis With The Stars. “Jonathan Waxman was the featured chef at the Taste of Tennis event, which was held at the Hyatt in Indian Wells. It was an absolute pleasure getting to interview such a talent. Some of the players I interviewed include Taylor Fritz, Sam Querrey, Taylor Townsend, Johanna Konta, Sam Groth, and Svetlana Kuznetsova. The event featured the food from so many incredible chefs, and several of the players got involved with helping the chefs make their dishes for the guests to try.” “The featured players at this year’s Tennis With The Stars were Eugenie Bouchard, Madison Keys, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe. The event benefits the wonderful Ace’ing Autism Foundation – Connecting kids through Tennis.” Kerry also recently covered a few events surrounding the Miami Open, and this month she will head to Chicago, where women’s tennis player Sloane Stephens Coach, Kamau Murray, founded the XS Tennis And Education Foundation. “The XS Tennis and Education Foundation’s Mission is to provide Chicago’s underprivileged youth with a safe-haven and positive academic/athletic pathway to college through a community-based sports and 32 APRIL 2017

academic enrichment program. Right now they are building a really amazing new facility that I will head out there to check out, and sit down with Kamau to discuss the facility and the program.” Her work – which Kerry is extremely passionate about, allows her to both travel around for events and tournaments, plus be in the studio in Los Angeles at times, creating content. So how is she so successful? Her regular show, “Talk Tennis” covers various tennis related topics, and stands out because it has a strong un-filtered, and comedic tone. “Tennis tends to be so buttoned up and conservative, and quite honestly it’s time to shake things up a bit,” she says. “Sure let’s talk about the matches, and player statistics. But let’s get more in to the nitty gritty about the players as people as well, ask some of the questions people are too tentative to ask, touch on some of the gossip that may be floating around, un-button that shirt and loosen that tie a bit! These days, people want to know more than just the score. With Talk Tennis I try to achieve that for the viewer in a fun, upbeat, funny, easy to follow kind of way so that anyone from the avid tennis fan, to the person who doesn’t know much about the sport, can watch and enjoy the show.” Kerry makes tennis fun for others, and she herself feels it is a great way to keep fit. It is a full body workout that is also an ideal sport for mental health as it relieves stress. Although she no longer plays competitively she doesn’t rule out competing

in a tournament one day. “I try to get on the court as much as I can. I love just hitting against a ball machine, or participating in local live balls – one of my favorite weekly events. Match play is so different from just hitting though, so I’m going to need a lot of practice before I jump back in to that!” As if her passion for tennis wasn’t enough, Kerry has another great love in her life – her love for animals. “I work with a companion animal nonprofit called “CARE Rescue LA.” We are a very small rescue, only seven ladies. We save primarily dogs and cats, and have over the years saved hundreds from death, abuse and terrible living conditions.” As a young child, Kerry volunteered for rescue organizations, and became involved with CARE Rescue La around two years ago – sparked by an incident that she witnessed at a local park whilst playing tennis. “I saw five cops surrounding a terrified, skinny, dirty, bruised and cut Pitbull, that was chained to an abandoned shopping cart. Knowing the fate of most Pitbulls at shelters, and also knowing that it is the police officer’s protocol to take stray animals to the shelter, I simply could not stand back and watch this poor dog essentially be taken to most likely his end at the shelter. The officers agreed I could take the dog, and off to the vet we went.” The dog had deep cuts on both his front paws and face, and was

malnourished, dirty, and flea infested. Kerry looked after the dog – which she named Rudy – for around six months, and he now lives happily with a family in Stockton. “After Rudy I wanted to get more involved in this world. A friend made a Facebook post about needing a volunteer for CARE Rescue to assist with a particular task. I responded and took on the task. From that point forward I became more involved with the wonderful ladies of CARE Rescue La and eventually became a board member, which I still am today.” The organization saves animals from high kill shelters, the streets and abusive situations. One of Kerry’s own dogs, Sally, was actually one of the rescues, that Kerry couldn’t let go. “Sally is a small Chihuahua/Corgi mix. She had been kicked so hard that her pelvis had been broken and a few ribs cracked. She sat at a high kill shelter in “medical” for over a month with her injuries, because they do not have the funds at most shelters to treat such things. CARE Rescue La raised the funds via donations to make the rescue and get her the surgery she needed to enable her to walk again.” CARE Rescue La also recently started shipping dogs in to save them from the meat trade in Korea. Kerry herself has two rescue dogs and two rescue cats. “It’s kind of impossible not to fall in love and bring them home when you work around animals so much and see so much sadness.” It is evident that Kerry works extremely hard both at her career and her charity work, with immense passion for both. “Ambition, drive, and independence have always been dominating characteristics in my life,” she says. www.facebook.com/TalkTennisWithKerryFeirman www.youtube.com/kerryfeirman

CONTEMPORARY ART AT THE BROAD

34 APRIL 2017

W

idely recognized as one of the most important collections of postwar and contemporary art in the world, comprised of more than 2,000 works by some 200 artists and still growing, the Broad collection has been built over five decades by Los Angeles-based philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad. Assembled with the intention of making important contemporary art accessible to the broadest public, the collection has served for many years as a “lending library” through The Broad Art Foundation (established in 1984), which has loaned works throughout the United States and internationally to more than 500 museums, non-commercial art galleries and exhibition spaces. With the September 2015 opening of the new contemporary art museum on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, The Broad is now home to the works in the Broad collection. Nearly all of the artwork is consolidated on-site, either on view in 50,000 square feet of gallery space or in the second-floor “vault,” a stateof-the-art storage for the works, where they are easily accessible to curators interested in borrowing from the collection.

“Edythe Broad began collecting art in the 1960s, purchasing prints by Georges Braque and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec”

History

Edythe Broad began collecting art in the 1960s, purchasing prints by Georges Braque and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. In the early 1970s, Eli Broad was drawn into collecting by his wife, and the couple acquired a pen and ink drawing by Vincent van Gogh, Cabanes a Saintes-Maries, 1888, and Painting, March 13, 1933 by Joan Miró. The purchase in 1978 of an untitled 1975 crosshatch painting by Jasper Johns marked the beginning of an ambitious and focused concentration on contemporary art, and the Broads traded the van Gogh in 1983 for Robert Rauschenberg’s Red Painting, 1954. The couple’s pace of collecting accelerated when they were introduced into the New York art scene of the early 1980s, with notable early acquisitions including a group of 20 Untitled Film Stills by Cindy Sherman in 1982. After Eli Broad became the founding chairman of the Museum Clockwise from top: Ed Ruscha, Norm’s, La Cienega, on Fire, 1964, oil and pencil on canvas, 64 1/2 x 124 3/4 x 2 1/2 in., © Ed Ruscha; Installation of three works by Roy Lichtenstein in The Broad’s third-floor galleries; photo by Bruce Damonte, courtesy of The Broad and Diller Scofidio + Renfro; Jasper Johns, Watchman, 1964, oil on canvas with objects (two panels), 85 x 60 1/4 in., Art © Jasper Johns/Licensed by VAGA, New York, NY; Barbara Kruger, Untitled (Your body is a battleground), 1989, photographic silkscreen on vinyl, 112 x 112 in., © Barbara Kruger; Jasper Johns, Flag, 1967, encaustic and collage on canvas (three panels), 33 1/2 x 56 1/4 in., Art © Jasper Johns/Licensed by VAGA, New York, NY

of Contemporary Art in 1979, and he and Edythe established The Broad Art Foundation in 1984, the collection also began to acquire concentrations of works by Los Angeles-based artists such as John Baldessari, Lari Pittman and Robert Therrien. An expansion beyond contemporary American art began in the late 1980s with the acquisition of major works by German artists, including Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer and Imi Knoebel. With the appointment of Joanne Heyler as curator in 1995, the Broads’ collecting grew more institutional in scope and approach, and as the collection neared 2,000 works and the desire to make the art accessible to the public grew stronger, the couple decided to build The Broad, which opened to the public with free general admission on September 20, 2015.

Curatorial Profile

Although the collection is diverse, representing a wide range of postwar and contemporary art, many of the works in the collection reflect strong social and political themes. The collection also includes a strong representation of contemporary German art. A noticeable preference for figuration over abstraction and Conceptualism in the collection dovetails with an interest in contemporary offshoots of the Duchamp tradition, from Rauschenberg and Pop art to Jeff Koons and appropriation. While the Broads have consistently been committed to supporting the work of emerging artists, making the collection an ongoing record of the most recent art to have been created over the past decades, they have also acquired deep concentrations of the post-

“Many of the works in the collection reflect strong social and political themes” World War II art that is the foundation for these new artists’ developments.

Artists

The Broad collection includes the largest group in the world of Cindy Sherman works, represented the largest of Jeff Koons, the largest collection of Roy Lichtenstein works outside the Lichtenstein Foundation, the only near-complete group of the 570-work multiples of Joseph Beuys in the Western United States, and one of the most significant groups of Christopher Wool paintings. Among other artists represented in depth are Richard Artschwager, John Baldessari, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mark Bradford, Chuck Close, John Currin, Eric Fischl, Leon Golub, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jasper Johns, Mike Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, William Kentridge, Barbara Kruger, Glenn Ligon, Sharon Lockhart, Lari Pittman, Charles Ray, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Frank Stella, Philip Taaffe, Takashi Murakami, Robert Therrien, Cy Twombly, Kara Walker, Andy Warhol and Terry Winters. HALF A CENTURY OF DRIVING A

MG – these three letters stand worldwide for supreme automotive performance, exclusivity, efficiency and highly dynamic driving pleasure. In 2017, the company founded by Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher is celebrating its 50th anniversary. In the course of this half-century, Mercedes-AMG has recorded numerous successes in motor sport and through the development of unique road-going vehicles, thereby repeatedly underlining its position as a highly successful sports car and performance brand – and today this is truer than ever. Today, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG, the Affalterbach-based company represents the sporting spearhead of the Group. In this anniversary year, with an eye to the future, Mercedes-AMG will carry on the exceptional success story of what began as a two-man company. For each of the now around 1500 employees, the focus will be on the brand promise of “Driving Performance”, which unites the core strengths of AMG: cutting-edge technology and a passion for dynamic, emotively appealing products. The company from Affalterbach stands worldwide for outstanding engine expertise, which includes not only development, but also the “one man, one engine” philosophy, which means that each engine is, so to speak, hand-crafted by one engine builder. With almost 100,000 units delivered in 2016, i.e. over 40 percent growth, and the biggest strategic model initiative in the company’s history, AMG heads into this anniversary year with record figures under its belt. Mercedes-AMG expanded significantly in 2016 as a whole and, with growth of 44.1%, again significantly exceeded the best previous-year figures. With 99,235 vehicles delivered, the success story of Mercedes-Benz’s sports car and performance brand reached a new level. Unit sales have thus more than tripled since 2013. This dynamic growth was made possible by continuous further development of the performance models, which are in greater demand than ever. Yet the strategic

broadening of the portfolio in recent years has also led to the successful development of new groups of customers. Hence, the company’s global success is not solely based on the popular eightcylinder models of the 63 series. The compact 45 series models, along with the wide range of 43 series models, are finding favour with very many customers while placing AMG’s modern product portfolio on a broad, solid basis. The markets with the highest unit sales in the most successful year in the company’s history were once again the USA, Germany and China. “We’re on the road to worldwide success with our strategic portfolio expansion and can look back on a sensational year. The 63 series models still constitute our core product line, and they continue to delight auto enthusiasts around the world. In addition, our AMG GT series, which was developed entirely in-house, is now available as a broad-based family, with which we have impressively demonstrated our expertise as a sports car brand. At the same time, our broad portfolio puts us in the perfect position for further sustained growth. Our task now is not just to celebrate the AMG success story, but, in one of the most exciting periods of automotive history, to help shape the performance of the future,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The next stage in the development of the AMG Performance Centres will see the opening of further AMG sales and service operations with a distinct architecture in Japan and Australia. As an addition to the existing global sales network, the separate center in Tokyo Setagaya, which opens on 12 January 2017, will spearhead the dealer network while defining the next stage of the strategic sales initiative. In a total area of almost 1000 square metres, customers can learn about the latest AMG Performance models and their technological features, the AMG Driving Academy, the AMG Collection and the involvement of AMG in motor sport.

“With almost 100,000 units delivered in 2016, i.e. over 40 percent growth, and the biggest strategic model initiative in the company’s history, AMG heads into this anniversary year with record figures under its belt” “In 1991, AMG embarked on the development and production of sports versions of Mercedes-Benz vehicles”

PERFORMANCE:

YEARS OF MERCEDES-AMG SUCCESS Milestones in the history of the sports car and performance brand AMG was founded in Burgstall in 1967 by Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher as an “engineering office, design and testing for the development of racing engines”. The letters stood for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach – the birthplace of Aufrecht. In 1971, AMG became famous overnight, with the red-painted AMG 300 SEL 6.8 winning its class in supreme style at the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race while finishing second in the overall classification. The plant in Affalterbach was founded in 1976. In a newly constructed building, the racing engine workshop evolved into a manufacturer of sports saloons and coupés. In 1984, Melcher completely independently developed a cylinder head with modern four-valve technology, the innovative engine being used as a 5.0-litre V8 in the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC. The principle of “one man, one engine” was valid from the outset. From 1986, the new cylinder head was used not only in the AMG version of the S-Class, but primarily in the saloon and, from 1987, in the coupé of the mid-size class (W124). Rated at 265 kW (360 hp), the car was christened “The Hammer” by the specialist media in the USA. From 1988, AMG not only constructed Mercedes-Benz 190 E racing cars, but was also responsible for their deployment in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). Collaboration with Mercedes-Benz began in 1990. In 1991, AMG embarked on the development and production of sports versions of MercedesBenz vehicles. The C 36 AMG, launched in 1993, was the first vehicle on the market to result from the collaboration agreement with Daimler-Benz. With sales of 5000 units up to 1997, it became the first best-seller. With the C 36 AMG, AMG in 1996 supplied the first official Formula 1 safety car. With effect from 1999, Mercedes-AMG was 51 percent owned by DaimlerChrysler. In 2001, the newly developed 5-speed automatic transmission in the C 32 AMG was paired with the 3.2-litre supercharged V6. Innovative touch control allowed the gears to be selected manually. In 2005, Mercedes-AMG became a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG. Unveiled in 2009, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was the first vehicle to be developed entirely inhouse by the sports car and performance brand. The sound, along with uncompromising driving dynamics and iconic gull-wing doors, found fans

around the world. AMG branched into motor racing with the SLS AMG GT3 in 2011. At the same time, the SLS GT3 marked the entry of Mercedes-Benz into exclusive customer racing sport. Unveiled in 2014, the Mercedes-AMG GT was the second sports car to be developed entirely inhouse by Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach. With its entry into the compact segment and its 43 series vehicles, AMG widened its portfolio while winning new groups of customers. With almost 70,000 units, Mercedes-AMG set a new sales record in 2015. The growth drivers included not just the newly launched 43 series models, but, above all, the performance vehicles of the C-Class, SUVs and compacts. Since 2016, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 has written a new chapter in the history of customer sports. Seasonal favorites At The Original

Farmers Market WORDS: Monica Poling, For The Original Farmers Market

46 APRIL 2017

A

t The Original Farmers Market, Los Angeles, we think nothing in the world tastes better than fresh-picked fruits and veggies, especially those that have matured right here under the California sun. If, like us, you prefer to buy your fruits and veggies when they are the freshest off the farm, here’s an insider’s guide to the best fruits and veggies available in April. Not sure what you want? Our produce providers, Farm Fresh Produce, Farm Boy Produce and Greenhouse have specialists that can help you pick out the tastiest, freshest, locally grown products.

Farmers Market Favorites Nothing says “Grown in California” quite like the California Avocado. The Hass, the most popular brand, was born on a backyard tree right here in Southern California. We love these treats because they are loaded with nutritious benefits, including fiber, lutein (good for your eyes) and potassium (believed to help control blood pressure). In fact, avocados have more potassium than bananas do. Certainly avocados contain a significant amount of fat, but research has shown that when eaten in moderation, they can actually help lower cholesterol. While the California Avocado Commission recommends that everyone grow an avocado tree in their backyard, we say why wait for the 15 years it takes for the trees to produce fruit? Come on over and pick up some fresh avocados today. Special Treat: Tasty guacamole abounds at The Original Farmers Market, Los Angeles. Try some at Magee’s Kitchen, Marmalade Café, Chipotle Mexican Grill, or Loteria Grill!

Tangerines As April unfolds throughout Southern California, we’re starting to see gentle reminders that spring is here. Wildflowers are in bloom and Farmers Market merchants are rolling out their spring offerings. And tangerines begin to make their appearance at our produce merchants. Small, sweet and portable, these tiny treats are the perfect to ready-to-carry snack for whenever you need a zesty boost. People looking for an ultra-local treat can pick up Ojai Pixie Tangerines, which are grown just up the road from Los Angeles. Ojai is home to more than 50 family farms, which produce more than 3 million pounds of this tasty citrus fruit every year. The Pixies have become so popular, that the city of Ojai has designated the entire month of April as Pixie Tangerine Month. Special Treat: Although we’re pretty partial to tangerines just as they are, you can ask one the folks at Farm Fresh Produce or Greenhouse to create some fresh-squeezed tangerine juice for an extra splash of vitamin C. Or stop by the T-Shop, and pick up some White Tangerine tea.

Brussels Sprouts Once the most-hated vegetables in the United

States—according to 2008 study by Heinz— Brussels sprouts are now making a major comeback. These days it seems like every new menu in America is featuring a special Brussels sprouts dish. And why not? These fiber-rich veggies are known for their healing properties. They are believed to prevent a variety of cancers—including bladder, breast, colon, lung, prostate and ovarian—and when steamed they also help lower cholesterol. Interestingly, these mini cabbages also contain more vitamin C than oranges and they are rich in folic acid, which is said to aid with fertility. Love to eat local? More than 90% of the nation’s Brussels sprouts are grown right here in California, most of them in the cool, salty climate found in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties, just south of San Francisco. Special Treat: At Fritzi Coop, Brussels sprouts make the perfect alternative to French fries and tater tots. The Brussels tots are halved, flash fried to add a hint of crunchiness and then tossed with a spicy gremolata—a chopped herb typically made from lemon zest, garlic and parsley. You can even pick up a bunch at Farm Boy Produce, Farm Fresh Produce or Greenhouse and throw them on the grill or in the roasting pan with a hint of olive oil. You’ll be glad you did!

Evolving into

paradise WORDS: Sarah Marshall

O

pening her eyes for the very first time, a newborn sea lion gurgles through a mouthful of sand. Coated in a translucent film of bodily fluid, her skin glistens in the sunlight as she wriggles free of the umbilical cord still attached to her mother. Overhead, plundering frigate birds, hungry for a bite of the afterbirth, threaten to shatter the idyllic picture. And even higher in the sky, a bigger metal bird roars past, bringing a different species of new arrivals to the island of San Cristobal. Sitting quietly on the beach, I witness the birth, while children paddle in the surf, just metres away. It’s the perfect fairy-tale portrayal of the Galapagos Islands - a utopia where animals and humans harmoniously co-exist. Cast away in the Pacific Ocean, straddling the Equator, the volcanic archipelago is famous for its endemic species, whose largely predator-free existence has left them fearless.

Isolation (it’s 1,000km from the mainland) has been vital to the success of these fragile ecosystems, but an increase in the number of tourists and the expansion of human settlements could potentially upset that delicate balance. There are now 25,000 people living permanently in the Galapagos, and visitor figures amount to around 225,000 annually. It’s hard to believe this new world could bear any resemblance to the pristine environment Charles Darwin explored in the early 19th century. But as the groundbreaking naturalist identified, evolution is in the DNA of these islands. In San Cristobal, the closest island to Ecuador, sea lions have learned to live comfortably with their two-legged neighbors. At the beachfront Golden Bay Hotel, two Balinese day beds have been commandeered by boisterous, blubbery pinnipeds, and every evening, a mischievous adolescent affectionately known as Samuelito, splays his

flippers on the best seat at the cocktail bar. Eager to explore the islands in a sustainable way, I’m embarking on a cruise with the MV Origin, a sumptuous 20-passenger yacht custom-designed for greater fuel efficiency and fitted with an on-board treatment plant to avoid dumping grey water into the ocean. The facilities are first-class – vast en-suite bedrooms with king-size beds and a wall of windows framing the sea – and the service five-star - two top grade naturalists attentively guide the group, double the allocation given on most ships.

“Avian displays are a highlight on any Galapagos itinerary. It was the finches, after all, that helped shaped Darwin’s theory of evolution” Exploring the Galapagos Islands is a meticulously planned operation; access is restricted to 70 landing sites and ships cannot revisit the same location within a 14-day cycle. As a result, crossovers with other groups are rare. 74 APRIL 2017

But life on-board never feels rushed or scheduled; lunches are long with ample time for dreamy siestas, often spent rocking gently in hammocks on the top deck as curious frigate birds soar above. MV Origin operates two seven-day itineraries. I choose one incorporating Genovesa, in the northeast, where three types of booby bird can be found. Red-footed boobies wrap their russet red webbing around the brittle branches of parched bushes; their blue-footed counterparts cavort in buffoonish play below. Tufty-feathered juveniles frantically – and futilely – flapping their wings in a premature attempt to fly complete the Big Top entertainment. A male yellow warbler bird doffs his brilliant red cap to the performance, and hops through the undergrowth in search of bugs. Avian displays are a highlight on any Galapagos itinerary. It was the finches, after all, that helped shaped Darwin’s theory of evolution. But not all birds here are native. The greater flamingos on Santa Cruz island ended up here accidentally, marooned by the trade winds from Miami. “You could say they were trapped,” explains our

jovial naturalist, Gaby. “But I prefer to believe they chose to stay here.” Watching the carefree pink swirls parade balletically through a brackish lagoon, I tend to agree with her. There are an estimated 650 flamingos in Galapagos, but the residents of Rabida island have all disappeared, frightened away by sea lions. Doe-eyed pups stare at us inquisitively as we stroll along the beach, where washed-up starfish form sorrowful constellations in the iron red sand. Fortunately, many still shine below the waves. Snorkelling in the warm water, I cross paths with a harmless basking shark and watch turtles nonchalantly glide by. I spend an enjoyable few moments conducting a shoal of sardines with my swim strokes; they disperse and reform, falling into perfect harmony. Foreign visitors seem to make very little difference to their world. But nowhere is completely impervious to change. On Fernandina, the youngest island in the archipelago, formed 600,000 years ago, the El Nino weather phenomenon nearly wiped out a population of marine iguanas. A rise in water temperature caused a decline in their main food source, red algae, leading the scaly black creatures to starve. When we visit, a stench of death still clings to the air and several shrivelled carcasses curl around solidified lava flows. But numbers are bouncing back. Piles of iguanas gather on the shore, seeking heat from the sun, and large belligerent males size each other up, rocking their mohawk heads like punk rockers, in a display of bravado. Galapagos species have a history of recovery. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, it’s

estimated 150,000 giant tortoises were taken from the islands by whalers, using them as food stores on ships. Able to live for six months without eating, the gentle giants were a convenient source of fresh meat on long voyages. But nothing can stop the irrepressible struggle for survival. Perhaps it’s something to do with the magic of the islands. “Bewitched” was a common term used by confused pirates, who claimed these mysterious islands would often disappear in a thick mist. But I prefer the erroneous translation of the Spanish phrase ‘las islas encantadas’. “Enchanted” is a much better fit. Beach Life R

oom At The Beach is a full-service design company. They do everything from the ground up – working with architects and contractors and furniture manufacturers to create a California lifestyle infused home. They also design and manufacture bespoke furniture in both upholstery and hard case goods. Their goal is to help homeowners bring the organic yet luxurious beach lifestyle that embodies the essence of California, no matter where they live. Founder Elizabeth Lamont started her business back in 1990 after she had been living in Manhattan for some time, traveling and studying at college. “It was during this time that I discovered a deep unwavering passion for all things that had to deal with the home and interior design,” she says. “I wanted to bring my knowledge and understanding of design that I gained through my travels to create a store that embodied a unique international design aesthetic that fit into the California lifestyle.” Elizabeth was born and raised in Connecticut

and spent many years visting and loving Malibu. “I moved back to Malibu in the early nineties and now feel as though it has always been my home. It’s a unique community full of artists, musicians, actors, actresses and people who appreciate the beautiful surroundings. There’s a very special feeling about Malibu that I love and you just don’t find that anywhere else.” Elizabeth’s first store was opened in Santa Monica where she enjoyed great success. Her search for unique products took her to many far flung destinations, bringing beautiful furniture and accessories from all over the world to her clients. Soon enough, word spread and the store quickly turned into a celebrity hotspot with stars from all over Hollywood heading to Room At The Beach. In 2007, the shop moved from Santa Monica to Malibu, so that Elizabeth could be closer to friends and family. The move meant that the business could grow from a retail shop to a full interior design business – sparked by a client asking Elizabeth to design a home for her in Malibu. “It was a seamless

A day in the life… “A typical day starts before my feet hit the floor as I try to sift through an array of emails. I then help prepare my family for the day making sure everyone is fed and ready to go. I begin my work day at the store with my in-store team before heading off to see my clients which takes me to a variety of cities up and down the coast. Depending on what part of the design process we’re working on, I sometimes meet with my client at a design centers to choose the perfect piece of furniture or lighting. I wrap up my day with emails and spending time with my family at home. transition and allowed the store to expand into offering interior design services, which is now a huge part of the business.” Today, she works with a whole team of designers on projects throughout the US and Southern California. “I love working with clients and getting to know people. You learn how they live, what they like, how they entertain and how they manage their family. The process of figuring out their lifestyle and what they want is where I find the passion to give them the perfect home, and that’s where I channel my artistic skills. I help them create a lifestyle. It’s an intimate process and level of understanding that I’m very grateful to be part of.” Elizabeth now has such a huge portfolio of stunning work, but is there a favorite project that sticks out? “There are so many, it’s difficult to choose just one. Every project is unique in its own way. However there is one experience I had early in my interior design career that has remained with me throughout. I was fortunate enough to work with Anne Bancroft on her master bedroom in Santa Monica. She and Mel Brooks owned a beautiful, eclectic home that showcased their travels and life collections. It was an absolutely stunning experience to be in her home, helping her put together this beautiful space. During the process Anne said to me: “I have shopped all over the world and I think your shop is my favorite.” I’ve done so many different things with so many incredible people, but I will never forget working with her and that comment. It was early on when I had just started my business so it really meant a lot to me.” High praise indeed, and others agree – many of Elizabeth’s clients are now firm friends and as the years have passed, she’s now designing homes for her clients’ children. “Seeing my work span across generations is truly a humbling feeling,” she says. As for the future, several of Elizabeth’s design projects are awaiting building approval and there will be much focus on building up the brand.

Room At The Beach is also looking to expand with the possibility of another store in the pipeline for next year, and improvements to the shop in Malibu. “Our clientele are world travelers and they often see the same stores everywhere so it is important for the design brand and store brand to be very unique. We are also always trying to work with different manufacturers to create one-of-akind products.” Room At The Beach, 3835 Cross Creek Road, #23, Malibu CA 90265 www.roomatthebeachmalibu.com

I liken my day to a ping pong match. I am ping ponging through my day working with my incredible team at the store and the incredible team of designers and wonderful clients. I spend my day going back and forth working on all different phases of design and retail. I stay very busy, and I thrive off all the constant activity and action. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Declutter by design words: Sam Wylie-Harris

W

e’ve all heard the saying, ‘tidy house, tidy mind’, and there’s a lot of truth in it. Maximising your space and ridding yourself from all that clutter can be far more positive than you might think. Not only can hoarding cause us anxiety and stress, but freeing your home of unwanted stuff means you can actually display the things you really love, creating a style statement with a dual purpose.

But where to start? HALL OF FAME First impressions count, and the hallway offers a clear vision of what the rest of the house may look like. Storage benches are the perfect way to declutter your hall, and baskets grouped together in varying sizes can be functional as well as fun. And don’t pooh-pooh the humble shoe rack; it can take care of wellies, trainers and everyday shoes, 86 APRIL 2017

and you can always turn one of the shelves into a makeshift wine rack!

SHOW KITCHEN “Even if you have ample storage space in your kitchen, it’s important it’s well organised, so you can really make the most of it,” says Terry Brown, commercial director at Benchmarx Kitchens. “You can ensure you maximise usable space by choosing different storage solutions that work best for your needs. If you’re keen to have more space for food items, why not incorporate a larder/corner pantry unit into your scheme, which will ensure that all of the available space is used?” Also, don’t feel you have to be traditional. Once you’ve ditched any chipped crockery, glassware and old cutlery, clever ideas - such as a step ladder or open shelving units - can be used to display favorite pieces, chinaware, chopping blocks, storage containers and even cookware.

H OME & real estate

LOVE YOUR LIVING ROOM This is the place that needs to work extra hard, especially if you want to keep it clutter-free, as it’s where we relax, watch TV, entertain - and display all those precious family photos, paintings, books and pretty knick-knacks. Back in vogue, a dresser or cabinet can not only mask a TV screen when not in use (and unsightly cables), but provide extra storage space for possessions you can’t bear to part with. Another must-have, a butler’s tray (with a removable tray) is a modern yet timeless way to serve cocktails, canapes or a TV supper, and with a wide table top it can double up as a sideboard. And if you’re not sure where to store those glossy magazines, winter throws and small soft furnishings, a footstool with hidden storage, covered in a favorite fabric, could become a key feature (it’ll also come in handy for putting your feet up after all this tidying!).

BEDROOM BLISS Taking time to create a clutter-free boudoir, with the focus on a few crucial items - like crisp bed linen, a tidy dressing table, fresh flowers and a radio instead of a TV - will look AND feel relaxing, and therefore help you get a decent night’s sleep, too. An untidy wardrobe, strewn with clothes that should have gone to the charity shop years ago, might mean you start the day with unnecessary stress as well. But with a little thought, you can make the most of your accessories, while hiding more mundane items behind closet doors. Your color scheme could add a sense of calm, too. “Cool tones of soft greys and neutral light-grain wood are key bedroom color palettes this year. Our stunning new color combinations, such as cashmere, stone and satin white, also work with this trend perfectly to create a tranquil space,” says Rachal Hutcheson, design expert. Along with calming those wardrobe woes with fitted units, an ottoman bed means heaps more storage to stow things away, without taking up extra space in the room. 88 APRIL 2017

illed cover-to-cover with beautiful, vivid photographs, Trousdale Estates is the definitive history of the architecture and design that definitive both Beverly Hills and the ultimate American Dream. Author Steven M Price is a Historian, Design and Preservation Consultant. Trousdale Estates is a 410 acre enclave of large, luxurious homes in Beverly Hills, California. Primarily developed in the 1950s and 1960s, it quickly became famous for its concentration of celebrity residents and the unrestrained extravagance of its midcentury modern architecture. Often working with unlimited budgets, architects and designers created sprawling, elegant backdrops for the ultimate expression of the American Dream.
