…puts the wow factor back into Kent’s craft fairs with new event at Hever Castle. 5-8 September 2019

raft In Focus who already stage the UK’s most popular events at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey and RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex is delighted to be staging a new event at Hever Castle this autumn.

Craft In Focus has always been at the forefront of promoting the best of the UK’s designer makers and their events have been placed above all other shows of their kind by The Independent. They are delighted to be adding this venue to their calendar and bringing some of the UK’s finest contemporary craftmakers and artists to Kent.

BOWIE UNSEEN Klinko Reveals Never-Before-Seen Images for Charity Exhibition

xtraordinary, never-before-seen images of the late David Bowie by awardwinning photographer Markus Klinko will be unveiled on 1 October by Zebra One Gallery – a Bowie Unseen exhibition at London’s exclusive Tramp members club, where he was a regular.

The images include eerie shots of Bowie as a blind man; posing with a pack of wild wolves and cradling a baby and will be on sale to members of the legendary London club throughout October. A percentage of profits will go to Macmillan Cancer Support in honour of the music icon, whose life

The images will then move to Hampstead’s Zebra One Gallery, where they will be available to view and on sale to the public until the end of November.

International fashion and celebrity photographer, Klinko was invited to shoot the Heroes legend for the cover of his 2002 album. Klinko recalls: “David Bowie came along to help choose the cover. He was every bit as charismatic and extraordinary as one can imagine, but really kind and lovely to talk to.“ “He is one of the very few celebrities I have worked with who personally got involved, he asked if I could come over to a Broadway recording studio and listen to some tracks. The mental image of Bowie sitting by a window, smoking cigarettes while his producer played the rough mixes from the

board, is a memory that I will never forget”.

Zebra One Gallery owner Gabrielle Du Plooy added: “We’re extremely excited that we can share these extraordinary images and raise funds for such an important cause.”

Tramp GM David Fleming added: “It’s particularly apt that the private view will be held at Tramp, where Bowie spent many happy evenings sitting in our Zodiac Restaurant and peoplewatching.”

Klinko has photographed the likes of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Kanye West and Naomi Campbell. Brands such as Lancôme, L’Oréal Paris, Nike, Hugo Boss and Remy Martin have hired Klinko to create advertising campaigns. His campaign for Keep A Child Alive raised more than $1 million for children with AIDS in just a few days.

THE HOME FROM HOME HIDDEN BENEATH LONDON’S JERMYN STREET For fifty years, an unassuming door on Jermyn Street in London’s well-heeled area of St. James’ has welcomed those in the know into a bustling basement venue where celebrities and sports stars rub shoulders with businesspeople and late night revellers.

I

conic members’ club, TRAMP has long been a destination for those who want to party into the small hours, but it has also forged a wellearned reputation as a club where fine-dining is always on the menu.

When Tramp launched in December 1969, its owners saw the opportunity to turn the former Freemasons Lodge, with its intricately hand-carved ceiling, into the Zodiac Restaurant, which still stands today.

The salubrious 17th century wood-panelled room has played host to countless gatherings over the years. It was at Tramp’s dinner tables that producers made the decision to cast Christopher Reeve as Superman; where Muhammad Ali discussed his fear of flying with then club-owner Johnny Gold; where Marlon Brando shared breakfast with the staff before returning to Elstree Studios for a day of filming and where Dame Joan Collins cut cake with her friends on her 80th birthday.

More recently, it was the chosen location for celebrity chef Gizzi Erskine’s 40th birthday, where a host of celebrity friends and Michelin-starred chefs gathered to toast their friend’s milestone at her favourite members club.

But while the beautiful surroundings remain largely untouched, the menu has evolved from the simple offering of twelve burgers - one for each sign of the Zodiac - into a sophisticated, contemporary twist on British and Italian dishes created by head chef, Richard Ismond.

Tuna with soya-yuzu and avocado are popular choices from the starters menu, while Lobster with squid ink Tagliolini; Angus Beef Fillet and Atlantic Line-caught Cod are favourite main courses among members.

Of course, Tramp is a club built on history and the menu still contains a nod to the days of old the Tramp Burger, featuring the club’s special sauce, a recipe passed down between head chefs who are sworn to secrecy about its ingredients.

And to celebrate their 50th anniversary, Tramp launched the Gold Burger, a 24k gold patty, topped with foie gras and truffle oil to create an offering as rich and luxurious as the club itself.

LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 2019 WELCOMES CHELSEA DESIGN DISTRICT

neighbourhood with an extraordinary design heritage, renowned for its bohemian free thinkers and creatives throughout the centuries, Chelsea will be participating for the first time in this year’s London Design Festival 2019, with the creation of the Chelsea Design District. From architecture to interiors, fashion and jewellery to fitness and food, Chelsea flourishes today as a neighbourhood rich in artistry and artisan making. To celebrate this, the Chelsea Design District will see a series of events, experiences and talks from Saturday 14th-Sunday 22nd September.

For those looking to marvel at exhibition spaces, key highlights include Duke of York Square’s Saatchi Gallery which will be hosting the inaugural I-MADE, London’s first exhibition solely dedicated to Italian design and manufacture along with talks and workshops that capture the country’s passion, innovation and craftsmanship. At the nearby National Army Museum, guests can experience ‘The Art of Persuasion’ exploring the life and legacy of iconic designer Abram Games. The exhibition will examine his time as ‘Official War Poster Artist’ during the Second World War and the legacy that continues to influence the art of persuasion employed by visual designers today.

Visitors to the Chelsea Design District can also experience a series of talks at various locations, including a presentation by Chelsea resident Peter Jones on the fascinating story of their Grade II 22 SEPTEMBER 2019

listed building, with a pop-up exhibition exploring how the bricks and mortar shop has changed from 1877 to present day, ahead of the store’s renovation of its iconic façade.

Other highlights include Anthropologie, which will be showcasing ‘The World of Kaffe Fasset’, known for his colourful designs in the decorative arts, while The Rug Company will be celebrating their collaboration with Winch Design by exhibiting a new collection of hand-knitted rugs inspired by the textures of the natural world; sand underfoot, clear blue of tropical seas, bursts of sunlight and rolling clouds after rainfall.

Socially conscious fashion brand Eileen Fisher will be hosting a talk on their innovative ‘Waste no more’ movement, a zero waste initiative that brings together creativity and innovation, and visitors to jewellery designer Annoushka Ducas MBE will be taken on a journey into her multi-sensory world and the abundant textures and colours that inspired her new ‘Hidden Reef ’ collection.

Gallery Roca London will be hosting ‘Drawing attention: The Digital Culture of Contemporary Architectural Drawings’, an exhibition exploring the speculative future of drawing; London College of Fashion curates a pop-up showcase just off King’s Road, challenging the notion of how products change and influence the world we live in, with pieces combining traditional craft with new technologies.

Designer Paul Smith to publish first children’s book this Autumn Celebrated British designer Paul Smith will publish his first children’s book this autumn, as part of a two-book deal signed with Pavilion Children’s Books.

P

aul’s first picture book, The Adventures of Moose & Mr Brown will be published worldwide in October 2019 as a hardback, with a special boxed limited edition, including a signed print, released simultaneously. The book is illustrated by Sam Usher, well known for his multi-award shortlisted book Can You See Sassoon? and popular seasonal picture book series – Snow, Rain, Storm and Sun. The Adventures of Moose & Mr Brown is a laugh-out-loud adventure story of animals, travelling the world and finding inspiration in the most unlikely of places. Mr Brown is an international fashion designer who agrees to help a Moose he encounters at an airport to track down his lost twin brother, Monty. Along the way they travel the world and help multiple animals by designing garments to meet their particular needs – including slippers for sloths, parkas for penguins and scarves for giraffes. The stories are inspired by Paul’s incredible career in fashion, and the main characters are based on toys Paul has owned for many years, and who reside in his London office along with other curios and artefacts collected from around the globe.

Paul commented on the upcoming publication: “I’ve known Moose and Mr Brown for a long time and I’m delighted to be able to bring their stories to life in my first ever children’s book. Sam’s illustrations are

The World’s first 360 degree Infinity Pool is coming to London

C

ompass Pools have developed Infinity London, the only building in the world to incorporate a breath-taking 360-degree infinity pool - allowing visitors to float over 200 metres above the capital’s skyline.

The concept features a 600,000-litre pool built right on top of a 55-storey building, with the floor of the pool transparent, allowing visitors to see the swimmers and sky above.

The pool is made from cast acrylic rather than glass, transmitting light at a similar wavelength to water so that the pool will look perfectly clear. The pool is also fitted with a full spectrum of lights which will give the building the appearance of a sparkling jewel-topped torch at night.

Boasting an innovative twist on renewable energy,

the pool’s heating system will use waste energy from the air condition system for the building.

Compass Pool’s swimming pool designer and technical director Alex Kemsley commented: “Architects often come to us to design roof top infinity pools, but rarely do we get a say in the building design because the pool is usually an afterthought. But on this project, we actually started with the pool design and essentially said, ‘how do we put a building underneath this? We wanted an uninterrupted view, both above and below the water. 220 metres up, it really will be something else –it’s definitely not one for the acrophobic!”

Infinity London could kick off construction as early as 2020 with a five-star international hotel on the top floors of the building with the pool used by the guests.

Commenting on the design, Alex continued: “We faced some quite major technical challenges, the biggest one being how to actually get into the pool. Normally a simple ladder would suffice, but we didn’t want stairs on the outside of the building or in the pool as it would spoil the view – and obviously you don’t want 600,000 litres of water draining through the building either.

“The solution is based on the door of a submarine, coupled with a rotating spiral staircase which rises from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out – the absolute cutting edge of swimming pool and building design and a little bit James Bond to boot!”

The options for Sixth Formers considering university courses have never been more diverse and one new pathway that has been of particular interest to our students and parents has been the degree apprenticeship. Degree apprenticeships are particularly attractive because they combine working for the sponsoring company with studying parttime at university and this, of course, provides the student with a salary and enables them to escape the burden of student debt. In addition, students gain invaluable work experience and the opportunity to develop their career within the sponsoring company.

Degree apprenticeships are so new that our first degree apprenticeship student only started her finance apprenticeship with Markel International last year. She has inspired two of our current Sixth Formers to gain places on two of the most prestigious of these schemes – one with Commerzbank and the other with PwC. The PwC scheme, which launched in September 2018, is specifically designed to increase diversity in the next generation of technology recruits. It offers a four-year Computer Science Degree Apprenticeship course at either the University of Birmingham or the University of Leeds. Our student who has an offer of an apprenticeship with Commerzbank, a leading German international bank, has the difficult choice of accepting her offer of enjoying a student lifestyle whilst making a flying start to her career, or taking up a place to study Finance at the London School of Economics.

odern boarding is about achieving academic excellence and building confidence, leadership skills and independence, as well as gaining a sense of community and cultural understanding.

The boarding community at Hurst College is made up of flexi and weekly boarders, now that it has moved away from full boarding. Hurst believes that these two options allow students to make the most of the educational and co-curricular opportunities during the week, and enjoy home life with their families at the weekends.

Flexi boarding for three nights each week is a huge attraction, it is a halfway house between home and school - and it really is flexible. Students are able to choose their nights, even at short notice, and retain their own bed throughout the term. All students

participate in co-curricular activities and many find this particularly beneficial, as do parents who need to juggle a busy lifestyle.

Weekly boarders can stay for five nights (SundayThursday/Monday-Friday) removing the stresses of a daily commute and allowing even more time for co-curricular activities and study.

Caty Jacques, Deputy Head Pastoral said: “It is much easier to fully immerse yourself in the school community when you stay the night. You can embrace the ethos and values and really feel part of it. This is the first time I have worked in a school with flexi boarding, and I am completely sold on it.”

Housemaster Adam Hopcroft said: “Boarding gives students a work-home balance. The school day is busy, so boarding provides students with the chance to take part in extra-curricular activities afterwards.”

The benefits of boarding extend far beyond extra-curricular options. Adam believes boarding gives students an advantage academically. “Boarders have more access to their teachers, our students work in study groups during prep and we make sure they are productive during this time. If they work well it allows them to have a more relaxed weekend.”

Housemistress Tania Fielden believes that the boarding environment gives students a strong foundation for their future. “Boarders have to learn skills for life, which is good preparation for their future. They grow up in a supportive environment and it becomes their second home.”

Key to a home-from-home environment is the sustained effort by housemasters/mistresses and their teams to not only provide a welcoming house, but to make themselves available to share the experiences of the day.

In families where both parents work full-time, boarding means busy parents do not have to worry about the school run and can be confident their child is being well looked after, leaving weekends free for quality family time. For children, boarding is a way to spend more time with their peers, be better prepared for the school day and have more time to take part in a full range of extra activities.

B

ishop Challoner is a selective Catholic independent school based in Shortlands.

We educate girls and boys from age 3 to 18 years.

I am the Headteacher and I was initially inspired to become a teacher as a result of the holistic experience of my own school days, having been taught by many excellent teachers who brought enthusiasm and creativity to the classroom. I knew that I wanted to work with children and inspire them to do their best and enable them to reach their full potential and enjoy learning.

As Headteacher, I ensure that I make time to listen to the pupils at Bishop Challoner and meet with them regularly. I am keen to learn all about their interests and their likes and dislikes and what makes them buzz. It is extremely important to me to meet the pupils in small groups over the course of each year whilst they enjoy cake and juice in my room. Since I interview all the 11+ entrants I am already a step ahead because when they join us I can remember their names and what they have told me. I also enjoy meeting them regularly for commendations to reward extremely good work and effort. The nursery children are adorable and they take time to feed me with treats they have made in

Excellent Examination Results 2019

T

his year’s GCSE results were amazing with all the Babington students achieving the grades they needed to move on into Babington’s Sixth Form and other prestigious schools.

Emily was overjoyed to receive so many 9 grades saying “there are only 1000 grade 9s in the county and I’ve got five of them!” The coveted grade 9 is the equivalent of a double starred A , and 7 equates to an A grade.

All the pupils have exceeded their targets this year and the overall percentages reflect a huge amount on individual endeavour, with 55% achieving grades 7-9 and 97% achieving grades 4-9.

At A Level, Babington students achieved 84% A* - C grades and 100% pass rate at A Level. The Mathematics students achieved 75% A* - A grades in Maths and Further Maths.

These results mean our students are successfully off to University. Michaela said, “I got in to study History at Southampton, I’m so happy”. Also, with a place at Southampton University is William to read Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Tom is delighted with his excellent results and has a place at Bristol University to read Economics & Politics. Tom said, “I so enjoyed my time at Babington, I’ve made some good friends and the teaching is excellent – so supportive”.

DAME VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

D

ame Vivienne Isabel Westwood OBE is a British fashion designer known for her influence on punk fashion and dressing the Sex Pistols, as well as causing a stir with her political opinions and outspoken attitude. It’s no surprise that her 76 years on earth have included some very interesting moments.

Vivienne studied fashion and silversmithing at the Harrow School of Art in London at the age of 17, but left after one term saying that a workingclass girl could never make a living in the art world.

She went on to work in a factory and then as a primary school teacher. During this period, she created her own jewellery, which she sold from a stall on Portobello Road.

She met Malcolm McLaren, and they moved into a council flat in Clapham. In 1971 McLaren opened a boutique at 430 King’s Road called “Let It Rock” later known as “Sex” and now World’s End. Westwood created clothes drawing inspiration from bikers and fetishists. The “punk style” included bondage gear, safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or toilet chains on clothing and spiked dog collars/chokers for jewellery, as well as outrageous make-up and hair.

ability to synthesise clothing and music that shaped the 1970s UK punk scene. Vivienne Westwood went on to open four shops in London, and by 2015, operated 12 retail outlets in the UK with 63 worldwide.

In April 1989 Westwood appeared on the cover of Tatler dressed as then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The suit that Westwood wore had been ordered for Thatcher but had not yet been delivered. The cover bore the caption “This woman was once a punk”.

She was awarded an OBE in 1992, and in 2006, the title of “Dame” by the Prince of Wales. In 2007, Westwood was awarded the gong for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design at the British Fashion Awards.

Vivienne Westwood has long been known for her political activism and using her brand to draw attention to causes such as climate change, nuclear weapons and human rights. In January 2015, she announced her support of the Green Party, and openly supports Amnesty International, Environmental Justice Foundation and Friends of the Earth.

s there anything cooler than a model sashaying down a runway as her fringed frock bounces around her?

We were treated to tons amazing tassels on the spring/summer catwalks, and now the trend has reached the high street, with everything from dresses to accessories featuring these dangly details. 1. Metallic fringing Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller spearheaded the fringing movement, using long fabric strands in the brand’s haute couture and ready-to-wear collections. What are the benefits of building with oak?

Do you need planning permission when building with oak?

We only recommend the best double glazing in the industry, here at Richmond Oak, a solar control glass which is toughened and has a self-cleaning surface. Its excellent thermal qualities ensure it reflects 86% heat on hot days and is the most efficient argon filled double glazing to retain heat on cold days. In addition, its 91% UV protection will protect the furniture and fabrics within your oak extension.

We also highly recommend the use of roof vents that help control the climate by releasing hot air when required.

As with any building project, the requirement for planning permission will depend on the size, type and location of the building or extension you are planning. Building with oak is no different - and there are no special planning permission requirements related to using oak as a building material.

As a general rule of thumb, you can extend without planning permission by 3m for semidetached houses and 4m for detached houses.

However, if you live within a Conservation area or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, planning permission is usually always necessary.

HARVESTING HERBS: How to make your homegrown herbs last into Autumn Don’t let the late summer rain wash away all your homegrown herbs. We offer top tips on how to keep them going, long after summer has faded.

W

ant to save your freshly grown herbs? They may have run to seed or look the worse for wear in the heavy summer rain, but it’s easy if you know how. Some herbs will soon be coming to the end of their natural harvesting period, so here are some top tips on how to pick them to enjoy for months to come.

1. Mint Hopefully you’ll have grown your mint in a pot so it hasn’t invaded other plants in your herb garden or border. The best way to harvest it is to start snipping as soon as the leaves are large enough.

However, this may have been at the beginning of summer. But if you want fresh mint into the winter months, take some cuttings now. Pick three leafy, non-flowered sprigs that are about 10cm long, sit them in a glass of water in a light position inside, ideally on a windowsill, and they should take root fairly quickly. Then pot the cuttings into a container about the same size you’d buy in a supermarket pot of herbs, with multi-purpose compost, and the mint should continue to grow. Cut it regularly and it should bush out.

2. Parsley This common herb is usually grown as an annual, either at the front of vegetable beds or in pots, but it doesn’t dry well, so if you want to save your harvest, freeze bunches in a plastic bag, then you can rub the leaves off the stalks when you remove them, as needed.

3. Sage This Christmas favourite - an essential addition to stuffing - also looks fantastic as an ornamental because of the striking texture and tone of its leaves. However, sage is a Mediterranean plant, so won’t appreciate a really wet winter. To be on the safe side, dry your sage leaves now by blanching them - dipping them into boiling water followed by cold - then lay them out on baking trays in a warm area to dry, turning them over from time to 66 SEPTEMBER 2019

time. Once they are totally dry, keep them in airtight screw-top jars.

4. Coriander Have you noticed that your coriander plants have run to seed, sending up wisps of cow parsley-like flowers? Don’t cut them off, because at this time of year, round, greenish seeds will be developing which can be used in your cooking. At the end of summer, cut the flower stalks complete with seedheads, and hang them upside down in a warm, dry place, but out of direct sunlight. Tie paper bags over the heads to catch the seeds which fall, and after a few days, shake the bag to encourage the seeds to drop. You can then dry them on a tray before storing them in an airtight screw-top glass jar. When you want to use them, grind them in a spice mill or in a pestle and mortar for maximum flavour.

5. Chives They may have long finished flowering, but if you want the oniony flavour of chives later on in the season, you’re best off digging up a small clump from your garden to repot and take indoors. Cut the foliage down to 2.5-5cm (1-2in) above the top of the roots, then repot in multi-purpose compost for windowsill plants, which should soon start growing and will be ready after outdoor plants have died down for the winter.

hartwell Oak Buildings Ltd specialise in providing handcrafted oak framed buildings. We design and make all of our products from our workshop in Kent but operate all over the county as well as Surrey and Sussex.

We are a reasonably small company who prides ourselves on our strong work ethic and building close relationships with all of our customers.

Our creations are built to last using traditional building methods. One of the key skills when designing and building oak structures is considering the movement of the wood; during just the first few years, oak can shrink by up to 5% as it loses its moisture.

While the length of the wood stays the same, the width and thickness of the beam can move and shrink. At Chartwell Oak we are well practiced at taking these factors into consideration in our designs.

The Process We use the shrinking of the wood to our advantage by ensuring that all the shrinkage results in is the tightening of the existing joints. We use the traditional draw pegging method on our mortice and tenon joints to ensure that all of our buildings 70 SEPTEMBER 2019

Shoreline Inspiration

Immersed in the tranquillity of jewel-toned greens and deep blues, the Seaglass trend from Oak Furnitureland creates ethereal spaces cut adrift from the outside world

By Joanna Thornhill, Interior Stylist and Author “When working with a tonal colour scheme, if you’re not sure which other colours to layer in, look to the colour wheel: locate your main colour on that, then pick out additional tones up and down it for subtle depth, as well as choosing colours from either side to add a harmonious accent.

“By going all-in with a tonal colour palette you can’t go wrong so don’t be afraid to mix blue walls with similar-toned furniture and furnishings. Just ensure you have several variations of your main colour in there to stop things feeling flat, and introduce an element such as green flowers and foliage, for subtle but necessary contrast.”

Oak Furnitureland has used pieces from its Brindle cabinetry collection to bridge the contemporary upholstered designs and the room’s more traditional decor elements. The range combines solid oak tops and country farmhouse cues with a fresh sage grey painted finish and nickel handles.

The Brindle extending dining table looks cool and calm at the centre of this scheme. Smooth painted turned legs and beading support a honeyed solid oak top that effortlessly transforms from 4 ft 9” to 6 ft 5”, making it ideal for entertaining.

The simplicity and chunkiness of the

Romsey large sideboard is a deliberate choice to counterbalance other more ornate pieces. Carefully built from solid oak, the sleek recessed handles and clean curved lines help to ground the scheme.

“Break up the look of painted woods by adding in a natural piece for contrast, such as mixing in two natural dining chairs among four painted ones. Here we chose to sit the Brindle dining chairs alongside Oak Furnitureland’s Classic dining chairs, both are upholstered in striped silver fabric.

“Consider using vintage kitchenware in unexpected ways too: an old tea caddy can make great storage for any dried foodstuffs or a beautiful vintage set of imperial-measure weighing scales could make for a quirky fruit bowl.”

BILL’S SEVENOAKS SET TO OPEN WITH A VIBRANT NEW LOOK

ill’s Restaurant and Bar is delighted to announce a new look for Bill’s Sevenoaks with the grand re-opening set for Wednesday 11 September . Whilst staying true to its roots, the restaurant has undergone a transformation with modern decor, luxurious velvet seating and decadent chandeliers.

The refurbishment will see the introduction of a new bar area and seating, a perfect spot for guests to either relax before dining or just to have a cocktail or two. Occupying a former primary school, Lady Boswell house, the restaurant will have a new, more cosy and intimate dining area at the back of the restaurant and the terrace will be transformed with the addition of a bold flower display.

Bill Collison, Founder of Bill’s, says, “ Good quality food in a welcoming environment has always been at the core of Bill’s. Although the restaurant interiors have had a revamp, the food is still at the very core of every Bill’s restaurant, with the team recently enhancing their evening menus. The menu has always had a strong emphasis on vegetarian food and fresh produce which stems from founder Bill Collison’s days as a greengrocer and the basis of his first restaurant in Lewes. They have introduced seasonal changes to their menus and have recently launched their autumn menu where guests can try their delicious Jackfruit Salad Bowl with spicy smoked chilli sauce with mixed grains and rice, edamame beans, red cabbage, toasted cashew nuts, lettuce with a mint and lime yoghurt or enjoy a Roasted Butternut Squash and Feta Risotto with baby spinach and courgette, topped with shredded fennel salad and toasted pumpkin seeds . We visited on a Thursday night when most other restaurants in the area were quiet, but Üsküdar was busy with people eating in the restaurant and arriving for take aways.

Service We were warmly welcomed, and well looked after by friendly staff, who throughout the evening were sitting down alongside guests to chat and check on how their food was. It felt more like being invited in to a good friends home than just being served in a restaurant.

Food With a mixture of traditional Turkish dishes, Mediterranean cuisine, and steaks cooked on the grill, there’s something to suit everyones palette.

Our favourite starter was the sautéed chicken livers in caramelised onions served with warm Turkish bread. For main, the ‘Et Shish…marinated cubes 96 SEPTEMBER 2019

of lamb grilled over charcoal were tender, full of flavour, and served with a fresh salad and perfectly cooked rice. To finish, we shared ‘Eminonu’ which was silky Mascarpone ice cream on a bed of digestive biscuit crumb and raspberry sauce, topped with a raspberry and blackcurrant sauce and white chocolate shavings.

Drink There was a well stocked bar, and a good selection of wine and Turkish beers available, as well as cocktails. We opted for the Turkish house red, which was fairly priced, light and with good flavour, and it accompanied the lamb shish very well.
