The Railway Children E. Nesbit’s classic novel The Railway Children is brought thrillingly to life in a stunning new stage production. When their father mysteriously disappears with two strangers one evening, the lives of Roberta, Peter and Phyllis are turned upside down. Forced to leave the comforts of their privileged London life in exchange for a simple rural existence, the young children puzzle over their new neighbours and struggle to accept their father’s absence. However, with the help of kindly stationmaster and his mischievous but well-meaning son, they soon become fascinated with the local railway station and the adventures steaming through it. From mystery passengers, bungled birthdays and a secret that threatens everything they know, the children learn the meaning of kindness and true friendship. This best-loved tale, made famous by the iconic 1970 movie starring Jenny Agutter and Bernard Cribbins, is a thrilling coming of age story and a fascinating insight into Edwardian rural life. Complete with beautiful period costumes, digital projections and ingenious designs, this new production promises an uplifting theatrical experience for all ages, packed with intrigue and adventure. The Railway Children comes to Churchill Theatre from 26th September to 1st October. To book tickets, visit www.churchilltheatre.co.uk or call the Box Office on 020 3285 6000.

FROM Page, to Screen to Stage The Addams Family

W

e caught up with The Addams Family writers Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice and composer/ lyricist Andrew Lippa to ask them a few questions about the exciting first ever UK tour of this fun-filled musical comedy. What inspired you to write a musical about The Addams Family? Andrew Lippa – The Addams Family is this spectacular, funny, moving musical that was the thing we set out to do. We set out to write a musical hat was not only based on these famous characters, but would also be touching and moving and remind people of their own families. Marshall Brickman – We knew there was a built in core audience of millions who have taken the Addams Family drawings to their hearts, it’s so be-loved! Andrew Lippa – Part of the fun of making The Addams family was we knew the audience had a familiarity with these characters from the films, the television show and the original drawings that Charles Addams did, which were our original inspiration. Then we were able to flesh them out and make them into singing, dancing, living people. 22 SEPTEMBER 2017

What can people expect when coming to see The Addams Family? Marshall Brickman - It’s fun, it has some lovely music, there are a couple of laughs, there’s a break, you can go out to the loo, get a beverage and you’ll be home by 11 o’clock. Andrew Lippa – Oh long before that! Rick Elice – It’s two hours that will fly by. It’s The Addams Family and we’re attracted to writing it for the same reason audiences are excited to see it; we love the characters and it’s fun to see them in a new situation (and this is a good one!) Marshall Brickman - We’re so excited to be coming to the UK with our show The Addams Family. We know it’ll be as much fun with you as it has been in Broadway and around the world.

with Joanne Clifton I’d never really trained in musical theatre but I had private lessons in singing and acting when I was a kid growing up in Grimsby. I didn’t do anything for fourteen years while I was in Italy but since I came back to do Strictly I’ve been taking lessons again. Before Millie I did two other musicals, on the fringe, but Millie was my first big stage show. And I have wanted to do musicals since I was a kid. I absolutely love singing and acting and I like the excitement of the audience coming in and only knowing me as a dancer; sitting there and thinking ‘ooh, let’s see if she can actually act!’ In Flashdance, you have to perform several dance routines that are so well known they have become iconic movie moments. How are you feeling about that? Ahh, I can’t wait! Let’s do it! Yeah. I absolutely love it. I think the audience will get the same feeling as me. When the music starts, particularly Maniac and What A Feeling, even if I’m tired after a day of rehearsals and the director says ‘ok, let’s do it from the top’, as soon as that music comes on I get an absolute buzz and I can’t wait to do it.

L

ast December, more than 13.1 million people tuned in to BBC1 to see Joanne Clifton and her partner Ore Oduba lift the glitterball trophy in the final of the 2016 series of Strictly Come Dancing. For the girl from Grimsby it was a moment of triumph but it was also a stepping stone into her career as a star of musical theatre. Now she is playing Alex, the steel welder-cum-nightclub dancer in Flashdance The Musical, currently on tour across the UK. Having left Strictly, you went into the tour of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Was Musical Theatre a new direction for you or a return to an earlier love?

What is it about Flashdance that audiences will love? It is such an iconic movie, such iconic songs and scenes, everybody knows Flashdance. About the author

Rock of Ramion by Frank Hinks

F

eaturing over 100 unique, colourful, hand-painted, full page illustrations, this stunning fantasy storybook was inspired by the fantastical bed-time stories the author created with his own children. Ramion is a magical place where anything can happen and frequently does, and the most extraordinary characters suddenly emerge. In this collection of enchanting fantasy stories, three boys travel the realm of Ramion on incredible adventures with their cat Snuggle, escaping from insidious foes: the witch Griselda who longs to eat them, and the Princess of the Night, a keen collector of real human sculptures. Rock of Ramion contains three stand-alone, fantastical stories. In Boris and the Dumb Skulls, Griselda’s pet skull and her guards the dim daft dwarves form a punk band and seek freedom from the witch. The three boys fight to recover their mother’s stolen dream in The Dream Thief, and rescue their rock loving father, who has become possessed by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix in Frankie and the Dancing Furies.

Frank Hinks QC 065By day, Frank Hinks is a prominent and well-respected Chancery QC based in London, with an international practice which includes Hong Kong, Cayman, Bermuda, BVI and the Bahamas. Outside his highly successful legal practice, Frank has always had a passion for storytelling. The Ramion adventures were inspired by the bedtime stories he would create every night for his own children. Julius the eldest was the principal inspiration, and he still helps Frank with the books. With characters inspired by members of his own family, like the witch Griselda who has purple hair like his wife, these stories evolved into the books that are now available with his own very distinctive colour illustrations. Ramion stories have been published in Korean by Marubol, and the Ramion Facebook following extends far beyond the UK. For the Ramion series of 18 stories, Frank has produced over 550 full page gouache paintings assisted by his son Alex, and working mainly in a small art studio off his room in Serle Court chambers in Lincoln’s Inn. Original artwork from Rock of Ramion together with works by his wife Susan Haire and son Alex both of whom are artists will be on display in an exhibition (which will also feature poems by son Julius) at The Cello Factory, London SE1 8TJ in September/October to celebrate the launch of Rock of Ramion.

About the Ramion Series Rock of Ramion is the third hardback collection in the Ramion series (the fifth collection overall), following on from Seas of Ramion and Ramion. The books are stunningly produced with gold embossing, making them ideal gifts and books to treasure. Bringing together many examples of Elvis’ costumes and stage wear along with the guitars, jewellery, posters and - for the first time - unique interviews with Elvis’ touring band, Elvis on Tour The Exhibition will take fans into a world where millions of people watched the greatest live rock and roll shows ever staged, which at one point was televised to over one billion people worldwide. Providing an insight into what went on backstage, the planes, the clothes and of course the music, Elvis on Tour The Exhibition will bring fans as close as possible to the experience of seeing the King live for themselves. Artefacts showcased in Elvis on Tour The

Exhibition and leaving Graceland include: • Over 35 jumpsuits and costumes worn by Elvis between 1969-1977 • Guitars from tours that Elvis played during the period, including the Gretzch Country Gentlemen Guitar used by Elvis on stage in Las Vegas in 1969 • Original acetate of ‘An American Trilogy’ – a song brought to Elvis by Priscilla • Gold Belt given to Elvis in 1969 by the International Hotel in Las Vegas to mark his record breaking live performance attendance in the City Priscilla Presley comments: ‘’To have a second exhibition dedicated to Elvis opening in London is remarkable. We were overwhelmed by the huge numbers, who were not only fans but people who were curious to learn more about Elvis. Elvis was beloved by his fans and they also meant the world to him. We are delighted that this carefully curated selection of over 200 artefacts will give them the opportunity to gain an even greater insight into his life and how he impacted popular culture around the world through his music, movies and personal style. Priscilla Presley will be making a very special appearance in London on 30 November 2017, joining the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra on stage at The O2 as part of the Elvis in Concert – Live on Stage UK tour.

THE OLIVIER NOMINATED

‘Alice’s Adventures Underground’ Until 23 September

There is a place. Like no place on Earth. A land full of Wonder, Mystery and Danger – Lewis Carroll, 1865

L

es Enfants Terribles and ebp in association with Creature of London are delighted to have returned to The Vaults with the smash hit “Alice’s Adventures Underground”. Following sell out performances of this unmissable show last summer which had over 100,000 visitors, culminating in a nomination for the 2016 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment and Family show; “Alice’s Adventures Underground” - are playing a limited season until 23 September 2017. With even more twists and turns for 2017, “Alice’s Adventures Underground” invites you deep into The Vaults, hidden beneath Waterloo station, to lose yourself in a land far removed from our own. Tumble down the rabbit hole and experience immersion like never before in this interactive, puppetry-packed, fusion of storytelling, music, circus and spectacle…but this isn’t Alice’s adventure, it’s yours... Make a series of choices; Eat or drink? Grow or shrink? And find yourself at the centre of the story as you wander through Wonderland, piecing together the puzzle as to what has happened to Alice who is lost in the looking glass. Be careful as your choice leads you down a completely different path into Wonderland; you might grow to enormous proportions and become one of Wonderland’s elite rubbing shoulders with the highest of playing card suits; or you might shrink to be so small that even boarder control can’t detect you; take tea at the biggest un-birthday party with the maddest of Hatters; let the Cheshire Cat take you hither or thither or you could even find yourself playing a key part in an underground resistance movement to rise against the fearsome Queen. “Alice’s Adventures Underground” is written by Oliver Lansley and Anthony Spargo and directed by Oliver Lansley and James Seager. For the 2017 season, there will be a limited number of tickets for under 26s at £25 each. The tickets are for the first performance on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the run. Standard ticket prices range from £39.00 to £71.50 (£31.50 - £54.00 during previews).

concert from the renowned concert pianist Joanna McGregor will make a spectacular start to the year at Bromley High School. Joanna McGregor is Head of Keyboard at the Royal Academy and will be playing the grand piano that she chose for the school with some of Bromley High’s Music Scholars at the Steinway Hall in July. Pianists will enjoy the privilege of a Masterclass with Ms McGregor before the inaugural recital. September will see the arrival of several new beautiful Steinway pianos as the school becomes the first all girls’ school in the world to be accorded All Steinway status allowing the girls access to a fantastic range of experiences with Steinway artists. At the same time, staffing in the Music Department has been expanded to enable the department to develop its collaborative work with local schools. The Arts play an enormous role in the life of the school with junior girls regularly appearing in productions from Reception upwards and a huge number of girls throughout the school participating in arts activities or opting for additional lessons in Music, Speech and Drama. The spectacular annual dance show has long been a highlight of the school year and this summer saw the first student complete the new A level Dance option with an A*, of course. Another Upper Sixth student has accepted a prestigious place at the Northern Ballet School in preference to her university place. In the Autumn Term, the Churchill Theatre will be the venue for Bromley High School’s production of the musical Grease – for such a dynamic all-singing, all-dancing cast, a professional theatre seemed the only appropriate venue to squeeze in both the performers and what will undoubtedly be a huge and enthusiastic audience. Another new exciting departure in the Autumn 50 SEPTEMBER 2017

Term will be an inaugural Women’s History Conference for local schools organised and hosted in conjunction with academics from the University of Kent’s History Department. This will extend the school’s range of Sixth Form Academic Conferences which already include an annual Economics Conference with the Institute of Economic Affairs and Classics and Physical Education Conferences. Bromley High’s Outstanding History Department has enjoyed exceptional academic success in recent years. In 2017, 97% of grades in the demanding IGCSE History examination were A*-A and 80% of History A2 grades were also achieved at A* or A. The school’s popular History and Politics Society has enjoyed a steady stream of visits from inspirational historians including the BBC’s Michael Wood, Historian and novelist Lucy Worsley, television presenter Haille Rubenhold whose academic specialism is in the history of women in the eighteenth century. The Women’s History Conference on the 22nd September will explore women’s role in the context of Medieval, Early Modern, Modern and Global History and will involve Y11 and Sixth Form History students from a number of local schools.

Future proofing students for the jobs of tomorrow

54 SEPTEMBER 2017

I

n an increasingly sophisticated and fluid job market, schools will have to adapt their thinking to prepare their students for an uncertain future. The landscape of the traditional labour market has shifted, the era of the lifelong career is changing, there is a shift from corporate career ladders to project based careers. We have to prepare young people for the jobs that don’t yet exist, to exploit opportunities and to create their own jobs and careers. More and more employees today are temporary, contract, freelance, part-time or external. We may mourn the loss of pensions and the safety net that they represented, the loss of a predictable career path makes it hard to form plans but also allows for opportunities to pivot and change direction and provides ownership – future career paths will be made by having transferrable skills, being flexible and moving. Top, innovative schools such as Babington House are focusing on empowering students and providing the skills to adapt to the new realities of the job market. These leading schools encourage independent learning where students are taught not what to think but how to think. Creative problem solving, complex thinking skills and an innovative approach all provide students with the vital skills to look for opportunities and take a sideways look at an emerging job market. Providing top of the range tablets and laptops enables pupils to exploit the ever changing world of information and communications technology and also teaches young people how to use an increasingly sophisticated virtual world safely,

efficiently and responsibly. Future jobs will require a dexterity with new technology and this needs to form a core part of all subjects. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths need to be balanced with Music, Sport the Arts and Humanities subjects so as to foster creativity and imagination. Traditional subjects such as History are increasingly pertinent in a world bombarded with fake news and circumlocution, where young people need to be able to distinguish between opinion and fact. Subjects such as English, which focusses on meaning and sub-text, which highlights the significance of what is left out, as much as what is put into a narrative, are important skills for our young people to grasp. Teamwork is going to be a vital skill in future jobs where employers will need efficient groups working together to deliver projects of increasing complexity on time and on budget. Compromising, resilience, sharing the credit and positive communication skills are becoming more and more important and should be actively taught in schools. So a formal education with a broad-based curriculum which is firmly rooted in the future is of the utmost importance in schools, coupled with an imaginative approach to learning and a creativity to embrace change. Breaside Preparatory School Outstanding Education - Excellent Results

Breaside Preparatory School, located in Bromley, Kent, prepares pupils from 2½ to 11 years for both Grammar and Independent Senior Schools in a caring and nurturing environment.

W

e are ranked ‘Outstanding’ in all measures by the School Inspection Service in October 2014, continuing from our Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ awarded in 2011. Once again, SATs and 11+ entry results for 2017 were outstanding, with 100% of Year 6 pupils gaining their first choice at Senior School. Parents are given guidance on the schools that we recommend for their children throughout their time at Breaside and we pride ourselves on getting the children into the right school for them as individuals. Should I choose Breaside Preparatory School for my child? Do they really offer more than a local primary school? The answer to both of these questions is a resounding ‘Yes’. As their name suggests, the role of preparatory schools is to prepare your child for their entrance into senior education, so don’t be surprised to see a plethora of subjects on the curriculum. Your child will experience a well rounded education albeit in a nurturing environment. Classes are significantly smaller, allowing all pupils to progress. At the same time, this allows all staff to know their pupils and therefore offer a bespoke curriculum. Preparatory schools provide a wealth of opportunity for your child both academically and pastorally. Self confidence is encouraged and children are constantly motivated to enjoy and embrace all the opportunities that arise within this positive learning environment. 58 SEPTEMBER 2017

“Your child will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of music, playing in an orchestra or participating in the choir”

The academic curriculum within a preparatory school is clearly of the utmost importance. Throughout your child’s time at their preparatory school, they will be prepared for the common entrance and scholarship tests and preparatory schools’ academic credentials are renowned. If the above isn’t enough to tempt you, consider the other aspects of a stimulating, all-round education. Your child will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of music, playing in an orchestra or participating in the choir. Peripatetic teachers within a preparatory school can introduce your child to a wealth of instruments, regardless of ability. Drama is also extensive with children as young as 3 taking part in plays. Within the encouraging atmosphere of a preparatory school, this can only help to aid your child’s confidence. Let’s not forget the range of sporting events that your child can take part in. Children in a preparatory school experience a range of sports, including rugby, hockey, swimming and cricket, Should you choose a preparatory school for your child? Well, if you want to give them the best possible start in life, then the answer has to be yes. The investment will pay off as you see your child blossom into a well rounded, self confident, individual, ready to face the world! here are 2,500+ independent schools in the UK which are independent of local or central government control. Independent schools offer a wealth of facilities and high teaching standards that enable students to achieve great results year after year. Independent schools are in the unique position to provide a truly bespoke education for your child. Choosing the right school for your child is an important decision that takes plenty of time and research. There are a wide range of independent schools specialising in different age groups and needs.

PRE-PREPARATORY SCHOOLS (AGES 2 YEARS - 7 YEARS)

Pre-preparatory schools - also called nursery schools or kindergartens - correspond to nursery and infants stages in local authority schools. In pre-preparatory schools children are taught to read, write, develop numeracy and learn to play. Pre-prep schools are often attached to specific junior schools.Pre-prep school is the first time most children will experience education, as opposed to the daycare provided by kindergartons. Children will have to learn the basics of mathematics, science and English, and a host of other subjects. Outside the classroom, many of the children will be having their first proper experience with team sports, music and/or choral tuition, and the arts.

PREPARATORY SCHOOLS (AGES 7 YEARS -11+ OR 13 YEARS)

Preparatory or prep schools, have a full range of subjects leading to admission to senior schools at 11+ or through the 13+ Common Entrance Examination. As their name implies, the preparatory schools are focused primarily on preparing boys and girls for their senior education, and the important public exams that come with it.

62 SEPTEMBER 2017

Free of the National Curriculum, prep schools can differentiate their curricula according to what they think best prepares children for their later education. Most prep school children will be learning a foreign language from the very first year, and don’t be surprised to see subjects like Latin, Philosophy and Physics in the classroom, with cricket, rugby and tennis all on offer during games. As children reach the end of their time at prep school, most will look to the Common Entrance Exam as their gateway into the senior schools. It is during this transition process that senior schools are also looking for talented pupils for scholarships and other awards, so the very able students may be asked to attend further examinations/recitals/ matches &c, depending on where their particular strengths lie. In the state system, children are tested by the Government SATs, however many schools in the independent sector will have their own internal methods of measuring the performance of the children. There are around 499 prep schools in the Independent Association of Prep Schools, one of our constituent Head’s Associations, collectively educating over 134,000 children.

SENIOR SCHOOLS (AGES 11 YEARS -18 YEARS)

Most of the pupils in independent education are in senior school, educating over 350,000 senior school students in almost eight hundred schools. Independent Senior Schools offer approaches to education, subjects, facilities and sports unparalleled in the state sector – students can study History of Art, Government, Russian and Japanese, and try their hands at Astronomy, Ceramics or Equestrianism. They could be on their school judo or sailing team, and take trips all over the world. Whatever your child’s particular strengths, passions and interests, there is almost certainly a school which can offer the chance to try all of them.

DESIGNS ON DIAMONDS We had the pleasure of being part of the Wedding Fair at the Excel Centre in London 8/9th April where we had the opportunity to display our beautiful collection of diamond wedding bands and jewellery for the Bride, Mother of the Bride and Bridesmaids.

I

t was a great experience to be part of the planning of the Wedding Day, the unique ideas on offer to make the Special Day even more special were incredible. We at DesignsOnDiamonds like to think that we can be part of your Wedding Day with our diamond set Wedding rings, but also part of the ‘special’ day that happens months before, the Engagement. The engagement ring is possibly the most important ring you will ever buy and a diamond is still the stone of romance which is traditionally given in this ring. Diamonds come in all shapes and sizes AND a huge range of prices. You can take 5 diamonds, all of the same shape and size and have 5 different prices – ranging from hundreds of pounds to tens of thousands of pounds. Why is this? It comes down to the quality of the stone. A diamond with a very good cut, colour and clarity will cost a lot more than a diamond with poor cut, colour and clarity. Unless a diamond is graded Flawless or Internally Flawless, there will be some type of inclusion within the stone. These inclusions are natural and make a diamond unique, as no other diamond will be exactly the same. Inclusions do not necessarily affect how bright and scintillating a diamond looks as an experienced cutter will cut the diamond so that the inclusion does not affect the stone’s beauty. DesignsOnDiamonds is an Online Jewellery Store that aim to bring to you high quality certified diamond jewellery. We want you to shop with us, confident that the pieces you are buying are genuine and of exceptional quality. It is quite daunting to purchase high price items online and we appreciate that. Top jewellery houses (Cartier, Tiffany) and designers (Vuitton, Gucci etc) all offer online purchase of their products. To give

you, the customer, piece of mind and a guarantee that you are buying exactly what is described to you, we believe it is important to sell diamonds with certification or some form of certificate of authenticity wherever possible. Before you start the process of buying that special piece of diamond jewellery, we would like to give you some information that will help you make an informed decision as to the right diamond for you. Back in the 1940’s an institution called the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) devised a grading system to bring some regularity to diamond grading. The GIA grading system is recognised worldwide today and is known as the Four C’s, which stand for Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. As GIA Diamond Graduates, we have studied, in depth, the technical make up and qualities of diamonds and believe that colour is the more important “C” to start with. A beautiful colourless diamond that has a couple of noticeable inclusions will definitely outshine a poor colour diamond that is without inclusions. It is so very important to work out what is important to you, beside budget of course, when looking to buy. Size of the diamond or the beautiful dazzling white of a near colourless one. It is very satisfying to be able to give a sizeable ‘rock’ as a token of love, but if the diamond doesn’t come alive with rainbow colours, it could be a huge disappointment to all. We offer a bespoke service where we will source that special diamond, gemstone or piece of jewellery for you, whatever your budget, just let us know. We have contacts with Diamond Traders in Hatton Garden, so we are confident that we will be able to offer the best possible price. Jacqui@DesignsOnDiamonds.co.uk Website: DesignsOnDiamonds.co.uk

Explore luxury retirement living at Emerson Park

T

he headlines are telling us that the population of the UK is set to age over the coming decades meaning that in 20 years’ time those aged over 65 will make up nearly a quarter of the population. And as that age profile is moving inexorably upwards, the need for high quality homes designed with older generations in mind is growing. People are living longer and are healthier so they are looking to downsize to a more manageable property in which they can live independently for as long as they can – with the reassurance that luxury facilities, support and amenities are on hand. The Cinnamon Care Collection is therefore delighted to announce the opening of Emerson Park – a development of 47 fully managed and exceptional quality retirement apartments for people over 55, with extensive on-site amenities, allocated parking and a dedicated transport service.

68 SEPTEMBER 2017

THE DETAILS For full details of the one and two-bedroom luxury retirement apartments and amenities at Emerson Park, or to arrange an appointment, contact the Resident Service Advisers. Tel: 01322 515415; Web: www.cinnamoncc.com/ emersonpark; Email: emerson@cinnamoncc.com

Located in the heart of the village of Hextable, a couple of miles from the M20 and M25, Emerson Park redefines luxury retirement living in Kent. The one and two bedroomed apartments are finished and equipped to the highest luxury standards with stylish designer kitchens and bathrooms, high quality appliances and floor coverings, contemporary lighting and double glazing. To add to your peace of mind there is an audiovisual entry system from each apartment to the main entrance, plenty of outside lighting including passive infrared sensors and a 24-hour emergency call system to an on-site team should you need it. All features are designed with ease of maintenance in mind but there will be plenty to stimulate the most active and socially engaged people. You can enjoy dining with friends in the Club Room, meet for a coffee (or glass of wine!) in the café bar or join in a variety of social activities inspired by the residents and organised by the Activities & Events Manager. Why not enjoy a movie in the cinema room, exercise in the state-ofthe art gym or be pampered in the hair and beauty salon? There’s also lots to do out and about with the private transport service offering trips to the supermarket, nearby Bluewater or local places of interest. Equally you may prefer sitting quietly in the peace of the landscaped grounds or one of the many cosy corners where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a good book! For those people who might welcome a little extra help, there are 5 spacious one-bedroom Service Plus Suites to provide exactly this. These are located with easy access to all the communal facilities and come with practical, non-intrusive support services including a delicious 3 course lunch, an hour a week of housekeeping and an onsite laundry service. The Cinnamon Care Collection is a privatelyowned company providing an exclusive group of luxury care homes and retirement properties in beautiful locations throughout the country. a brighter smile at h williams & Associates words: Clare Herriot

A

few years ago, I turned 40, my special gift was to have my teeth whitened. I chose to have home whitening which involved several visits to see Heather Williams BDS (Lon) MFGDP (UK), my dentist, and some homework on my part using gel and mouth ‘trays’. It did not take long for my teeth to begin to look much brighter and whiter. According to independent research, a whiter smile has a substantially positive effect on peoples’ first impressions of you. I felt a little self-conscious wanting tooth whitening but was surprised at how positive Heather was and that she seemed to like my teeth! In an ideal world, we would all be confident beings, but to be truthful, most of us have hangups and even though others often see us in a more positive light, we usually have aspects about ourselves we are not entirely happy with. My mouth is a little crowded and as a result my front teeth overlap, so I tend to avoid toothy smiles. I don’t want a perfect appearance, but small changes like tooth whitening or straightening would allow me to be free to focus on my career, fitness, positive mental health and my spiritual well-being. Recently, I created a video for Heather Williams’ dental surgery, as they were celebrating 20 years in Petts Wood. To my surprise, I discovered you can now have braces that do not look like train tracks. What a great idea, after all, it only takes 7 seconds to make a first impression, so what I am waiting for? Have you got a question about your smile that might seem trivial? Why not pop in for a coffee and 76 SEPTEMBER 2017

Why Studio Pilates is key to General Wellbeing! P ossibly one of the most exciting aspects of Comprehensive Studio Pilates is that anyone can do it. Because there’s no jarring or stress to your body, Studio Pilates offers the ideal form of exercise for people who, because of pain or muscle weakness generally shy away from exercise. Neck ache, back ache, headache, even stomach ache - you name it, most aches can occur as a result of bad posture. As you correct your alignment or posture through Pilates, you’ll find you put less pressure on joints such as knees, hips and spine for example. You may also find that some of your body’s systems work better because of this. For example, you may find that it’s easier to digest food. Learning to coordinate movement and deep specific breathing in Pilates, you can increase lung capacity and improve circulation also. You’ll also look better – taller, leaner and more confident whilst helping you to move with more grace and ease.

Kinder, Gentler Conditioning If you’re out of shape, Pilates provides a wonderful way to ease into any kind of fitness plan. Pilates works to gently support the joints throughout the whole body. It conditions your muscles in a balanced way and increases your self-awareness by drawing your focus inward. Being consistent is the key. Emotional Wellbeing Pilates benefits your emotional health. It helps to improve your mental outlook and increase motivation through the smooth, steady movements coordinated with breathing. They work to quiet your mind and soothe your nervous system. As Pilates focuses on breathing also, you become mindful of your breath, of your body and muscles, and it becomes like a form of meditation. When you work to lengthen and strengthen your muscles in the Pilates studio, you’ll improve your circulation and whisk tension away. Each workout will leave you feeling calm, balanced, and rejuvenated. Focus on letting the tension go, and you’ll be on the path to a healthier body inside and out. You’ll enjoy better sleep once you start doing regular Studio Pilates too, partly because its calming but also because your body isnt full of physical tension. Better Balance, More Coordination Pilates can help reverse the natural aging process of reduced balance and coordination by stabilizing and strengthening your whole body. The deliberate movements of Pilates, along with the challenges the machines and small equipment bring, increases strength, muscle control and flexibility in both the core and the limbs, which positively affects balance. 28a London Road, Riverhead Sevenoaks, Kent TN13 2DE 78 SEPTEMBER 2017

Sundridge Interiors QUALITY AND DESIGN

A

mongst Sundridge Interiors many services the most popular of all is their “design service”. This superb service is the answer to the challenges facing customers when considering making changes to their existing home or starting afresh with a new home. The reason for this is simple, Sundridge Interiors offer a “tailor made” design service to suit all budgets. Sundridge always get the project moving by visiting their clients home, they discuss the requirements of each client in detail and get a real feel of the project and what will be involved. The Sundridge approach is simple, they take one room at a time giving due consideration to extended areas throughout the home in order to create a sense of continuity and harmony. Then mood boards are created by selecting a variety of styles and fabrics – wall coverings – flooring – lighting – furniture – decorative objects. These all become an integral part of the theme, creating a comfortable, harmonious atmosphere. After discussion with the client a specific theme will be agreed. At this point samples will be ordered on a larger scale for both fabrics and upholstery 84 SEPTEMBER 2017

“Ideas can be transformed into reality, for example a coffee table or a pair of armchairs can be made by working closely with the furniture makers”

to get a clearer vision of the end result. Clients are encouraged to visit to the showroom during this process because this joint discussion forms an important part in the creation of the specific required style of room or rooms. At this time clients can peruse the many other items on display in the showroom, extensive lighting displays and table lamps are strategically placed on various items of furniture throughout the showroom to give clients an idea of how they will look in the home. There are also a wide selection of mirrors to suit all rooms in the house, these are displayed on a variety of walls and colourings. Bespoke furniture is another part of the service on offer from Sundridge. Ideas can be transformed into reality, for example a coffee table or a pair of armchairs can be made by working closely with the furniture makers. Clearly lighting plays a major part in the creation of beautiful bathrooms. They have a wide selection of concealed ceiling lights which are complimented with floor and cabinet lighting, all are on display for customers to see. Sundridge Interiors are truly successful and have a waiting list for their design services, however clients are seen quickly and usually work is able to start within three weeks from the first meeting. The time span tdesign a room from start to completion is approximately four weeks and as an example the design fee for an average sized room is approximately £495 and for much larger rooms or rooms which have an annex leading from them the cost will be approximately £695. The heart of the forest in your home

In the modern, urbanized world of “ready” solutions, we need calmness more than ever, to be able to escape from the hubbub of the city, the omnipresent wi-fi and upcoming deadlines.

I

n searching for a universal remedy for stress and feeling unwell, doctors have discovered the saving power of forest baths - calming walks in the surroundings of trees that are a mood booster and strengthen our body’s immune system. The Japanese Shinrin-yoku is a beautiful way to health for everyone and it is winning over hearts in the West. Being aware of this, Pixers designers would like to propose Forest Bathing motifs as a supplement to the time spent in nature’s surroundings. The internet is full of ideas on how to best spend time with nature. Offers of trips to the forest and group contemplation are popping up on AirBnB and Pinterest users are outdoing themselves inspiring with moss and needle-coverings. Not everyone, however, has the luxury of taking a walk through the woods every day, and with a bit of luck, they can visit a nearby park as the second best alternative. The Forest Bathing wallpaper series with the forest motif is a response to the growing popularity of “bathing” without water and soap bubbles which can be done on a daily basis, before and after work, and even during a gloomy or busy weekend. The rich green colour is not afraid of dominance or a secondary role. It’s so natural that it can appear on its own, intertwining various shades

“The rich green colour is not afraid of dominance or a secondary role” or in combination with other colours and motifs. Decorating walls or furniture with showy leaves or bark can be an introduction to developing and looking after nature in your interiors. Scented candles, mood music or artifacts brought in straight from the forest, arranged with taste, allow you to create something that has real ambiance. An interior that will not only be trendy and stylish, but also functional and friendly. And the saying “East or West, home is best” will take on a new meaning. www.pixersize.com 90 SEPTEMBER 2017

Dahlia Collection now available on Pamono The Dahlia Collection – a monochrome solid European ash series comprised of a ining table, bench, coffee table and bookshelf designed for contemporary living with a communal feel is now available online via Pamono.

P

roduced in collaboration with family run Italian Manufacturer Universal, the debut collection combines local raw materials and modern engineering processes with traditional craft techniques. Both Mueller and Universal pay particular attention to their impact on the environment and the Dahlia Collection has been created using renewable energy sources with sustainability and longevity in mind. European ash has been a constant companion on Mueller’s design journey and with the collection manufactured in Central Europe, he felt the material was appropriate for his debut as an independent designer. “Looking around the design world at the heavy use of Oak and Walnut made me feel more confident to use Ash for the collection to showcase its beauty, durability and strength,” explains Mueller. “I understand how to work with Ash and get the most from it, not just in machining techniques but also to highlight the beauty of the grain variations and the material’s capacity for taking different finishes.” Having grown up in Austria, Mueller spent the majority of his time in his grandfather’s workshop working with materials and learning conventional techniques. His move to London in 2008, to study at the CASS School of Design, allowed him to develop his design language and immerse himself in his new urban surroundings, which have in turn formed the inspiration for the detailing featured in his designs.

92 SEPTEMBER 2017

Drawing inspiration from the pleasing juxtaposition of architectural elements in the city, Mueller has utilised a simplified line motif to create a sense of harmony across his collection. “I noticed the drain pipes on certain structures had contrasting colours which gave the houses interesting new outlines and enhanced the overall form,” states Mueller. “Clean lines are always referenced in one way or another in my designs and this is setting the tone for future developments, hopefully with some exciting twists.” This striking interplay is echoed in the colour choices selected by Mueller. Stained black ash frames have been chamfered to reveal the untreated ash below, adding an outline effect to the pieces, while the solid whitewashed tops corroborate his clean approach to design. With plans to expand the collection with a bespoke offering, Mueller envisions his customers choosing their own statement colour to accentuate their living space. The Dahlia Collection is available on Pamono on a made to order basis andcan be shipped worldwide within 6-8 weeks. www.alexandermueller.co.uk

If the almonds have skins, plunge them in boiling water for a couple of minutes, drain them, then slip the skins off. If you are toasting your nuts, preheat the oven to 150C/130C fan/gas mark 2 and roast them for five minutes, or until they are very pale gold. If you like, chop the nuts roughly. 2. Lightly grease a heatproof work surface or line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. In a small heavy-based pan, melt the sugar and honey over a low heat, then increase the heat until it is boiling at the edges - but be careful, it must not burn. 3. Add the nuts or seeds and stir vigorously for another minute, then tip onto the prepared work surface or baking tray. Use a wet palette knife or metal spatula to press the mixture flat, then rub it with the cut side of a lemon. 4. Allow to cool. To serve, break into pieces. It keeps well in an airtight tin in a cool, dry place.

STYLISH MORNING COFFEE We love this striking and luxurious set of two coffee cups in copper and black from MiaFleur. They are the perfect gift for the seriously discerning coffee lover. These cups are made in Scotland from durable stainless steel and are double walled, which not only helps to keep your coffee warmer for longer, but also helps to prevent heat conduction to your hands from the metal (think traditional metal tea pots- lovely idea, but not so lovely to hold or lift the lid!). These coffee cups are sold in a set of two, including one with a luxurious copper metallic finish and one with a striking black finish and presented in a black gift box. CHICKEN TONIGHT? How to make Gennaro Contaldo’s baby chicken in a cider vinegar sauce

G

ennaro Contaldo loves to cook with baby chickens (aka poussins) because, he says, they are “much more tender than a fully matured one”. If you’re cooking his mouthwateringly good baby chicken dish for guests, you can share them or serve one poussin per person, depending on people’s appetites, says Gennaro. All you need now is a side of seasonal vegetables...

Ingredients: (Serves 2-4) • 2 baby chickens (poussins), boned (ask your butcher to do this for you) • 6tbsp olive oil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper For the filling: • 2 garlic cloves, peeled • 2tbsp capers • 1tsp sea salt • 2tsp extra virgin olive oil • Needles from 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary • A handful of chopped fresh parsley • Freshly ground black pepper For the sauce: • 2 garlic cloves, peeled • Needles from 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary • 120ml white wine • 120ml cider vinegar • 1/2tbsp sugar • 1tbsp capers • Scattering of fresh parsley, to serve (optional) 98 SEPTEMBER 2017

“You can share them or serve one poussin per person, depending on people’s appetites”

Method: 1. First make the filling by placing all the ingredients in a mortar and pounding them with a pestle until you obtain a pulp. 2. Open up each baby chicken like a butterfly and place skin-side down on a chopping board. Spread the filling evenly over the flesh side, then fold the poussin back over and secure the opening with wooden toothpicks, weaving them in and out. Season all over with salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan, add the chickens, then reduce the heat slightly and cook until golden brown on all sides. Cover the pan and cook gently

for about 20 minutes, until the chickens are cooked through. 3. Meanwhile, make the sauce. Place the garlic and rosemary in a mortar and pound with a pestle. Add the wine, vinegar, sugar and capers, and mix well. 4. Turn up the heat under the chickens, add the sauce and simmer until reduced by half, stirring all the time. Arrange on a plate and pour over the sauce. Serve immediately, scattered with parsley, if wished. Gennaro’s Passione: The Classic Italian Cookery Book by Gennaro Contaldo is published in hardback by Pavilion, priced £20.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Gusto restaurant and bar 9 High Street, Chislehurst

Drink A very appealing and extensive cocktail list is available. We kicked off with a cherry and coconut sour served on ice - a nice way to start the evening. The wine list has a good selection available, and we found that the French white from Languedoc went well with the salmon pasta.

Ambiance Gusto is a new addition to Chislehurst high street - with over 17 restaurants located across the country, this is its first offering in the south - and upon entering it certainly has the wow factor. A slick black bar with mixologist creating cocktails, twinkling fairy lights, and a light bright conservatory style roof to join the new and the old parts of the building.

Service We were warmly welcomed at the door, and shown to our table. Our waitress for the evening then came over to introduce herself, and she was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful throughout the meal, guiding us through some of the popular Italian dishes on the menu.

Food We were presented with a crowd pleasing menu - with everything from deli boards and pizza, to steak and pasta dishes. To start, we opted for the tiger prawns - cooked and served in garlic, tomato and cream with chargrilled bread to soak up the delicious sauce, it was a great dish to kick off the meal. For main, our favourite was the freshly made tagliatelle with smoked salmon and dill - a generous portion of light, perfectly cooked pasta, and tossed in cream, peas and spinach with a little lemon. For dessert you must try the bombolini - mini homemade warm doughnuts served with a Chantilly cream and chocolate sauce. 100 SEPTEMBER 2017

enjoy authentic indian cuisine in kent

T

he food of India is as regionally specific and diverse as its population. Not only does the cuisine differ from region to region, but from community to community within the same region, influenced by religious and cultural practices of its inhabitants. In addition, variations in climate, local vegetation and the availability of specific spices locally have all shaped the cuisine. A key influence on the cuisine of India is its history –Alexander the Great, Persians and Moghuls from Central Asia, trading partners – Arabs, Portuguese, Dutch, French, Chinese and English who all brought their cuisine to India. Over the centuries, Indian cuisine has absorbed elements of all of these food cultures and created a cuisine that is unique and one that has delighted many a palate across the world! The pervasive ‘Indian Curry’ created to suit the British palate in the Sixties and Seventies no longer serves the evolving and ever more discerning tastes and adventurous palates of the widely travelled
