The Churchill Theatre fills with festive cheer this December The lead up to Christmas and the holiday period is full of excitement and joy at the Churchill Theatre.
This year’s pantomime is the sparkling Cinderella, which opens on 1st December with performances throughout the month, providing the whole family with the perfect fairy tale Christmas treat. The cast is led by Birds of a Feather star Lesley Joseph in the magical role of Fairy Godmother.

longside the pantomime, the theatre also features a family Christmas show in The Studio for children aged 2 and over. This year’s show is the heartwarming The Owl and The Pussycat (Sat 8 – Fri 21 December) in which the two, fluffy animal friends reminisce over the travels of their youth, whilst preparing for Christmas. ollowing their highly successful production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s world famous musical CATS earlier this year, WWOS will be returning to The Churchill Theatre Bromley later this month with a revival of one of Stephen Sondheim’s most famous musicals FOLLIES. WWOS are The Churchill Theatres’ resident Theatre Company and have been performing shows at Bromley’s prestigious professional Theatre for over 40 years since its opening in 1977. In that time have built up an excellent reputation for performing both classic musical such as, My Fair Lady, Fiddler On The Roof and Me And My Girl, as well as more modern works including Sunset Boulevard, Legally Blonde. And the outrageous Priscilla Queen Of The Desert As well as their Churchill Productions, WWOS have a travelling Old Time Music Hall troupe touring the south east of England performing their infamous show Strictly Music Hall and raising money for various charities as they go. Over the past 20 years they have raised over £100,000 for Charities. In Follies, the time is 1971. At a reunion hosted in a crumbling theatre, a parade of ex-showgirls take to the stage one last time, accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves. This sets the stage for a parade of brilliant ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s pastiche numbers featuring some of Stephen Sondheim’s best-known songs including “Broadway Baby”, “I’m Still Here”, “Too Many Mornings”, “Could I Leave You?”, “Beautiful Girls” and “Losing My Mind”, to name a few. Amid the reminiscing, two couples, Buddy and Sally plus Benjamin and Phyllis, confront some unpleasant truths about their past and present and come face to face with the future. Sally and Phyllis were showgirls in the Follies

when they met Ben and Buddy. Both couples are deeply unhappy with their marriages. Buddy, a traveling salesman, is having an affair with a girl on the road; Sally is still as much in love with Ben as she was years ago; and Ben is so self-absorbed that Phyllis feels emotionally abandoned. Add to this a company of over 50 performers, a full professional orchestra, sumptuous costumes and breathtaking sets and you have, what promises to be a wonderful revival. Other TV projects include: Eat Well for Less, Inside the Factory, Turn back Time, Harvest, Supermarket Secrets and Who Do You Think You Are? Gregg’s autobiography, Life on a Plate was published in 2012 by Orion Books. He has 2 children, Tom and Libby who he has bought up on his own. And he has also gained 2 rugby union coaching badges. He now lives on the Kent coast with his wife Anne-Marie.

Why is it important to make a Lasting Power of Attorney ? A
Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you appoint one or more people (known as ‘attorneys’) to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf. There are two forms of LPAs, one to deal with property & financial affairs and one dealing with health & welfare. This gives you more control over what happens to you if you have an accident or an illness and cannot make your own decisions. If a person lacks mental capacity they cannot create an LPA. In these situations, a relative, friend or professional can apply to become their Deputy. A Deputy is a person who is authorised by the Court of Protection to make decisions on a person’s behalf.
The Pitfalls of Deputyship The process of making an application to be appointed as a person’s Deputy is somewhat time consuming and laborious. It involves submitting a detailed application to the Court of Protection. It is also necessary for a mental capacity assessment to be carried out of the person lacking capacity. It can take in the region of 4 to 6 months to obtain the Court Order, provided that it is granted, as opposed to 3 months to have an LPA registered. There have been cases where the Court will not agree to appoint the applicant as the Deputy because of a conflict of interest or safeguarding issues. Furthermore, Deputies must act within the powers afforded to them by the Court of Protection. Most Order’s typically include the power to manage a person’s money, pay bills or make reasonable gifts (that the person would have made), and make investments, if appropriate. However, you may need to make further applications to the Court for further powers, such as asking the Court’s permission to sell the person’s home. An LPA would, however, provide these powers and ensure that an application to the Court of Protection was not necessary. The costs associated with a Deputyship application and ongoing Deputyship Order are greater than if the person had made an LPA whilst they had mental capacity. For a Deputyship application a person will have to incur amongst other things, solicitors costs, costs for completing a mental capacity assessment, Court Application fees for each application they make to the Court and the costs of an insurance
bond (which must be purchased to cover the person’s assets should the Deputy act fraudulently). In the majority of cases, it is far more cost effective to have an LPA than being subject to the costs of Deputyship.
Consideration In summary, all of us, at some point in our lives should prepare an LPA. Therefore, should the unfortunate happen and we lose our mental capacity, we have the safety in knowing that we have already legally appointed the people we want to be our attorneys. This is instead of leaving our relatives or friends to face the complications of a Deputyship application and ongoing dialogue with the Court of Protection. Incorporate interior design in your building project, says local architect If you are planning an extension or new build project, it pays to hire an architectural practice that has interior designers in-house. words: Gwen Lardner

ombining the two disciplines in a more holistic approach ensures that the end result is both aesthetically pleasing and fully functional. All too often the interior design comes as an afterthought, by which time the build is complete and opportunities to personalise or make the most out of a space have been missed. “A conventional architect will provide you with a perfectly good plan that ticks all the boxes, but I am a passionate believer in incorporating an interior design scheme right from the outset,” says Jolanta Cajzer of Studio 212 in Chislehurst. Rather than creating generic blank spaces, this allows for a uniquely personalised build, reflecting the taste and lifestyle of the client, she argues. Jolanta and her husband Daniel are both fully qualified architects who have worked on highprofile design projects in the UK and Europe. Jolanta is also a highly experienced interior designer, enabling her to oversee every element of a building project, from initial design concept, right through to the finishing touches. Daniel and Jolanta are co-founders of Studio 212, which offers the full range of architectural services, with the added benefit of in-house expertise in relation to functional layout, lighting design, colour schemes and furniture. Though they were very happy with the architectural firm that prepared the design for the planning process, they felt that the large, undefined spaces needed to be customised to reflect their lifestyle. “Before Studio 212 got involved, there was a danger that it would turn out like any other new

build home built by developers,” says homeowner, John Ryan. “We needed help to elevate the design to be more special, more unique to us,” he explains. Jolanta spent a lot of time getting to know the Ryans to really understand what they wanted from their dream home and how to make it a reality, making best use of the space available. A digital 3D model was created, enabling the couple to virtually ‘walk through’ the plan and explore the interior design options. “Jolanta has an eye for detail and is extremely knowledgeable about her trade. She opened our eyes to new ideas and guided us through every stage, including finding the best tradespeople and sourcing high quality materials and customised furniture,” says John. Although architecture and interior design are two distinct professions with different skill sets, Jolanta believes that architects should always try to imagine themselves as the end user in order to give a more personalised approach to functionality and the interior layout. “I encourage clients to go for what they have always dreamed of, not to compromise on quality or be swayed by what everyone else has in their home. They are always astonished with the outcome and they really appreciate my dedication to their vision,” she says. Preparing a house for autumn can be great fun. It’s time to get the velvet cushions and wool throws, from the back of the cupboard and embrace their texture. One of the biggest changes that autumn brings, is that the light hours are getting shorter so it’s time to think about your lighting. Firstly, discover the variety of lighting, I ask my clients the following questions; do you have enough lights? at varying heights? for varied uses? can you wrap yourself in a faux fur throw and read the latest thriller whilst sitting in front of a roaring fire? The trick is to have a combination of different lighting, table lamps, spot lights, walls lights, pendant lights and standard lamps scattered throughout your spaces so that you can fulfil activities in the home comfortably during those darker months. Just by changing and replacing some lamp shades, can give a room a different feel. Selecting a shade with a different texture, whether it’s a colourful tartan, luxurious silk, a beautifully woven linen or cotton or an old-fashioned card, there is a lampshade to suit every taste. Do keep in mind that electrical lighting is not the only way to bring more light into your homes, it is just the most obvious one. I am often putting large mirrors into my clients’ homes or sometimes a selection of smaller mirrors, opposite a window to allow the light to bounce and reflect back into the room. A log burner and or a hurricane vase with candle will also bring a glow of light and warmth to a room. Celebrate London’s international restaurant scene with world’s top chefs

The London Restaurant Festival (LRF) in partnership with American Express® has arrived for its 10th year. Taking place throughout October, there is a starstudded line-up of some of the world’s top chefs and as ever LRF will take place in restaurants, welcoming over 50,000 people into over 400 restaurants across the capital.

his year centres around the international nature of London’s restaurant industry with some of the most exciting chefs in the capital. Each of the ‘Top Ten Cuisines’ are represented by some of the world’s best chefs, including Bill Granger, Michelin-starred husband and wife Dylan Jones and Duangporn ‘Bo’ Songvisava from Bo.Lan in Bangkok who are teaming up with som saa, and one of the world’s most decorated female chefs Anne-Sophie Pic who holds seven Michelinstars and is hosting a dinner at La Dame De Pic. Galician Chef Javier Olleros is cooking alongside Nieves Barragan Mohacho at Sabor, whilst Chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino from Lima’s Malabar will champion the food of the Amazon alongside Martin Morales at Peruvian restaurant, Ceviche. LRF’s Tasting Menus, sees 20 menus exclusively created for the Festival, which this year features chef-hosted events for the first time including Ben Chapman at Kiln (recently voted the UK’s Best Restaurant in the 2018 National Restaurant Awards), Monica Galetti at Mere, and Adam Handling at The Frog. Alongside this, there is a unique pop-up; Hertzstück™ Dining Room, where guests are invited to explore the future of dining through a sensory, theatrical tasting menu. A series of events celebrate Thailand’s culinary scene and the impact it has had in London.

Tasting Menus run throughout the month at the likes of Som Saa, Kiln and Greyhound Café, as well as a Gourmet Odyssey visiting three of London’s top Thai restaurants. There is also an opportunity to win a trip to Thailand, with Thai Airways International, Amazing Thailand and Hyatt hotels. This year, the Ultimate Gastronomic Weekends include an overnight stay at one of two 5-star, London hotels (Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill and Andaz London Liverpool Street) and a series of chef-led events and dining experiences. There are several brand new events for LRF 2018, including: Eat Art, fusing two of London’s great passions with an exclusive private view and dinner at the Saatchi Gallery; Eat Talk, delving into the minds of some of the industry’s best-known names including the legendary Pierre Koffmann, Andrew Wong and Michelin-starred husband and wife team James Knappett and Sandia Chang. Celebrating the quintessentially British obsession, luxury tea brand Newby Teas has joined the festival with a series of LRF Tea Tasting Masterclasses plus exclusive Curator Tours of their prized Chitra Collection – the world’s largest private museum of historic teawares. Restaurant-Hopping Tours, an LRF staple, sees diners discover some of London’s most exciting food neighbourhoods by enjoying five different restaurants in the area. From Chelsea’s charming Pavilion Road, to St James’s and Regent Street, and the newly revamped Battersea Power Station,
guests can enjoy a course at five restaurants within the neighbourhood, with drinks from the likes of Remy Martin, Zonin Prosecco, City of London Gin and paired wines selected by Chalié Richards wines. Devonshire Square has returned along with Estrella Galicia’s Tapas Tour, and a spin around St Katharine Docks showcasing its restaurants along the water’s edge.
