his Christmas, Eccleston Yards – the hub for independent retail, wellbeing and coworking developed by Grosvenor Britain & Ireland (‘Grosvenor’) – will illuminate its courtyard with a multi-sensory light installation, titled ‘Wave’. The installation will debut at the London destination from 28 November - 11 January this year, and has been created by internationally renowned artists, Squidsoup. ‘Wave’ will offer visitors an interactive light and voice experience that explores the wonders of colourful illuminations, taking inspiration from the ancient healing concept of Chromotherapy: the science of using the powers of light and colour to balance energy in the body and mind. Celebrate Christmas with Tramp
L
ondon’s Tramp members club has enjoyed a year of celebrations in preparation for its official, 50th anniversary party on December 17 - but for those hoping to squeeze in a last toast, the iconic venue is offering members a luxurious tasting menu to help see in the new year. The club on Jermyn Street has seen in more new years than any of its competitors and just as its first members celebrated the turn of the decade in 1970, corks will pop and champagne will flow around the tables of the venue’s restaurant and discotheque. The evening will begin with Louis Roederer Brut Premier as guests are invited to take their tables for a seven course menu incorporating Turbot fillet with butter poached langoustines; Beef Wellington served with sauce Périgourdine and Champagne granita. But Tramp’s reputation was not built on fine food alone, and as the final Macaroons are polished off and guests begin to edge towards the dancefloor, it will be the club’s legendary party atmosphere that sweeps the crowd into the year 2020. It is a momentous occasion for the club, not just because it marks the end of their 50th anniversary celebrations, but because the team have been busy ensuring the next half decade is as successful as the last. General Manager, David Fleming says: “Tramp’s history is, without doubt, more celebrated and famous than any other members club in London, if not the world. But as a team, we are keen to look forwards and never rest on our laurels. “Tramp membership is exclusive and much sought after, and we continuously strive to keep it

that way, with announcements planned for the new year that will make that Gold ‘Tramp’ card even more valuable than it is today. “But our ethos will always remain the same: Great food, great cocktails, great service and a great atmosphere. “And whether it’s your first visit to the club or your fiftieth year as a member, the club is your home from home.” Prospective members may apply at www.tramp.co.uk/membership

The potential pitfalls of making a Will after remarrying – and how to avoid them
W
hen a married couple makes mirror Wills, they usually follow a simple formula – everything is left to each other when the first spouse dies, then passes to the children on the second death. This is an efficient and proven structure when all children are from the same relationship. But is this the case when couples have children from previous marriages? The standard mirror Will structure is problematic for a number of reasons when each spouse intends to benefit different people, as they may if they have children from previous marriages. The largest issue is that all assets pass to the surviving spouse outright on the first death. This means that the spouse who dies first will not be able to guarantee their children will inherit, as the survivor will be fully entitled to leave all assets to their children only. Even if both Wills included legacies for both sets of children, the surviving spouse can change their Will to exclude their spouse’s children after their death or even to leave the estate to another partner
30 NOVEMBER 2019
“Even if both Wills included legacies for both sets of children, the surviving spouse can change their Will to exclude their spouse’s children after their death or even to leave the estate to another partner if they remarry”
if they remarry – meaning the spouse who died first could effectively be leaving everything to people they have never met. This can create uncertainty and make inheritance a lottery, as who will inherit depends entirely on which spouse passes away first. In other words, the salient issue is the lack of asset preservation and protection for the spouse who passes away first. So how is this issue avoided? A common solution to this issue is to incorporate a trust structure in both Wills known as a life interest trust. The Wills work as follows: rather than passing outright to the surviving spouse, all assets are left in a life interest trust for their benefit. This means the surviving spouse does not own the assets – the trust does. The assets will pass outright to the children on the second death. The surviving spouse is left a ‘life interest’ in the estate, allowing them to continue to live in the matrimonial home and take any income generated by the assets passing under the Will whilst they are alive – but the capital value is preserved for the testators’ children. This means that each spouse’s assets are guaranteed to benefit their respective children without cutting each other out of the Will entirely. A life interest trust is also rather flexible. Powers can be granted to trustees that allow them to appoint trust capital to the children if it is necessary to do so. This means assets can be given straight to children if they need it (such as in the event of a divorce). Without a life interest trust, the assets would be owned by the surviving spouse, who would not be obligated to provide any financial support to the children. A life interest trust Will can also result in reduced care fees for the surviving spouse. As the assets from the first spouse’s death belong to the trust rather than the survivor, they cannot usually be considered in financial care assessments. There is no guarantee this mechanism will work in the future as legislation may change, but life interest trusts are currently effective for this purpose. In summation, if you and your spouse intend to benefit each other with your Wills but are concerned that you wish to benefit separate people after you have both passed away, a life interest trust is an excellent way to guarantee your assets are protected and preserved whilst ensuring the survivor is provided for when they are alive. Is there such a thing as common law marriage? T
here is a common misconception that ‘common law marriage’ exists, with many people wrongly assuming that they have the same rights and protection when cohabiting as if they were a married couple. This leads to many cohabiting couples not having adequate legal protection. When living together, a cohabitation agreement should be considered. Such an agreement can cover a number of different matters, including how any property and other assets are owned, who is responsible for outgoings, or what will happen in the unfortunate situation that the parties separate. A cohabitation agreement should however be reviewed when there is a change of circumstances, such as the birth of children. If there is no cohabitation agreement in place, in the event of a relationship breakdown, and an agreement cannot be reached with regards to ownership of assets and finances in general, then it is possible that the parties will end up in court. This can be costly and stressful, with a judge deciding on how financial issues are finalised. In the event of any dispute where there is a cohabitation agreement in place, it is likely that the Court will uphold such an agreement, as long as certain specific criteria apply, including if it is fair to hold the parties to the agreement and that both parties have entered into the agreement freely and voluntarily, with the benefit of legal advice.
The ‘rise’ of the pre-nuptial agreement Many people now marry or remarry later in life, resulting in an imbalance of capital and assets being taken into the marriage. Often one or other of them will have assets from a previous relationship, or will have built up assets which they wish to retain in the event of marital breakdown. There may be children from previous relationships for whom they wish to provide financially. A pre-nuptial agreement can help protect pre-marital assets and state how the parties wish joint marital assets to be dealt with on the occasion of the breakdown of the marriage. Although such agreements are not strictly binding, in the event of a later divorce, they can be the deciding factor in a dispute, as long as certain criteria are met, which would include that it is fair to uphold the agreement, and there have been no changes in circumstances since the agreement was entered into. To prevent the Court having to deal with issues on a change of circumstances, it is 32 NOVEMBER 2019
advisable to review the agreement either after an agreed period of time or on a specific change of circumstances. A post-nuptial agreement can be entered into in effect amending the terms of the pre-nuptial agreement, taking any new circumstances into consideration. This article was prepared by Zoe Nichols a family law solicitor at Wellers Reece-Jones Solicitors, based in Sevenoaks. www.wellerslawgroup.com

Top 5 reasons to choose a Retirement Village There has never been so much choice in retirement living, but what makes a Retirement Village so appealing? Park Retirement Village and you would think you were in a high-end hotel rather than a care home.
Number 3: Peace of Mind
M
ost retirement developers shout about how nice their apartments are but with a Retirement Village such as the newly opened Emerson Park Retirement Village at Hextable, Kent, wonderfully fitted and designed apartments are just the start. We have made a list of what we think are the top 5 reasons to choose a Retirement Village.
Number 1: New Opportunities With so much going on there’s lots of opportunities to not only make new friends, but also to learn new skills. Most Retirement Villages have a dedicated Events & Activities Team who organise a range of events designed around the interests of residents. So, if you wanted to learn how to Skype your grandchildren or investigate your family history, they will help you do it. With all the on-site facilities there’s the opportunity to do the things you’ve always promised yourself. Facilities vary but will include as a minimum a restaurant and lounge. But most will include far more meaning you can take advantage of the fitness suite (and start that fitness regime you keep promising yourself!), be pampered in the hair and beauty salon, enjoy that film you’ve been meaning to watch in the cinema or just relax with friends and family in the bar. One thing is for sure, there will always be something to enjoy.
Number 2: Flexibility We all want choice and the better retirement villages provides a choice of accommodation to suit your needs. If you are looking for a luxury apartment where you can lock-up and leave so that you can spend time travelling, then the Retirement Apartments are the perfect solution. Your property is being looked after while you are away, and when you return the Retirement Village operator will make sure the heating is on and there is milk in the fridge. Some Retirement Villages now have a care home on-site meaning that should your needs change in the future, specialist care is available. And forget those negative perceptions you may have about care homes; a walk around a care home such as Emerson Grange which is part of the Emerson 48 NOVEMBER 2019
“With so much going on there’s lots of opportunities to not only make new friends, but also to learn new skills”
Peace of mind not just for you, but for your family as well. Having staff on-site 24-hours a day who will immediately respond to an emergency is a great reassurance. But it’s often the little things that make the difference such as knowing that there is a driver should you no longer drive, the luxury of having a restaurant on your doorstep if you don’t fancy cooking or enjoying the grounds which are beautifully maintained by the dedicated gardening team. A Retirement Village will have anything from 20 - 70 members of staff who will be led by a General Manager who will always be available should you have any questions.
Number 4: Keeping Couples Together Possibly the most important point. A move to a Retirement Village means that you and your partner should always be able to stay together, no matter what. Even if one should need to move to the onsite care home, you are still within the Retirement Village and many feel that it’s just an extension of their own property.
Number 5: You wouldn’t want to, or need to move again With all this on your doorstep, why would you ever want to move! And with the reassurance of a care home there shouldn’t be any reason to move again. A move to a Retirement Village provides what we all want in later life – a social community, luxury facilities and the reassurance of support and care if required. KNITWEAR NOW: FRESH TRENDS TO SHAKE UP YOUR AUTUMN LOOK
shows you the shapes and prints to be seen in this season.
Katie Wright
A chunky jumper with puffy sleeves is ideal for teaming with an A-line mini or a floaty maxi dress and a pair of ankle boots.
4. Embrace your animal side Leopard print may have dominated all summer, but now zebra stripes are ruling the fashion kingdom. And not just black and white, either. Autumnal hues and khaki variations fit with this season’s Seventies vibes, while a dash of sporty stripes breaks up a monochrome base.
A
re you rejoicing because knitwear season is finally here? Us too. After that annoying in-between period when it’s too cold for T-shirts but too warm for woollies, now we can embrace winter fashion in all its glory. But that doesn’t just mean throwing on the same boring old jumpers. This season, take your knitwear up a notch with stylish silhouettes and catwalk-inspired prints. Here are four new trends to try now...
1. Coordinate your look Winter’s answer to double denim, woolly coords are a genius idea, because they’re as comfy as loungewear but still look classy. For a chic workwear look, team a jumper and skirt set with brown leather boots and accessories, or
2. Dress it up Loose, Eighties-style jumper dresses take a back seat for autumn as form-fitting knits take centre stage. In ribbed fabrics and dark hues, these clingy frocks are a far cry from frumpy jumpers. Add knee high boots to really amp up the sex appeal.
3. Play with proportions Another way to make a snuggly jumper feel modern is by opting for an on-trend silhouette and this season that means balloon sleeves. 50 NOVEMBER 2019

Why choose an oak conservatory or orangery for additional living space? I f you’re thinking of extending your home and property so that you can have more space to enjoy with family, entertain friends or simply a tranquil place to relax, then a Richmond Oak glazed extension is a perfect choice. In fact, oak is a fantastic building material. Not only does it look stunning, but it also provides a wealth of structural and environmental benefits, earning oak its place as one of the best and most effective building materials. What are the benefits of building with oak? There are a huge number of benefits to building with oak. Firstly, one of its most obvious benefits is its aesthetic appeal. Oak looks fantastic and an oak extension will add character and charm to any property. Another benefit is oak’s strength and durability. An oak extension is expected to last for up to more than three times the average lifetime of a uVPC conservatory. In addition, building with oak is great for the environment. Timber is sustainable, renewable and recyclable - making it a very eco-friendly material. At Richmond Oak, we only use Class 1, FSC certified fully seasoned European White Oak - meaning it has been sourced from responsibly managed forests. What structures can you build with oak? Oak is an incredibly versatile material and is suitable for a huge range of structures, from entire oak framed houses to oak conservatories, orangeries and oak garden rooms. In addition, seasoned oak can 56 NOVEMBER 2019
be used for a variety of features within your home, including oak windows, doors and staircases. The possibilities are endless when it comes to building with oak, and the experts at Richmond Oak will be able to create a living space which suits your exact needs and requirements, whether that be a traditional or contemporary design style. Do you need planning permission when building with oak? As with any building project, the requirement for planning permission will depend on the size, type and location of the building or extension you are planning. Building with oak is no different
“Richmond Oak is a family-run business, based in East Sussex, with client projects across the South East”
- and there are no special planning permission requirements related to using oak as a building material. As a general rule of thumb, you can extend without planning permission by 3m for semidetached houses and 4m for detached houses. However, if you live within a Conservation area or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, planning permission is usually always necessary. With over 40 per cent of our oak extensions in the last 10 years being added to listed buildings, Richmond Oak is well placed to provide specialist advice regarding additions to these special homes. In the event that you do require planning permission, the Planning Permission Coordinators at Richmond Oak are on hand to take care of this entire process for you. What investment is required to build an oak extension? There are many factors that will affect how much you should expect to invest in your Richmond Oak orangery, garden room or conservatory. These include design type, size, planning permission, building regulations, frame material, technical specifications (i.e.glass type, roof vents), joinery installation and associated building works.
Based on our experience of projects we have designed and installed for clients over the past 10 years the investment required will typically range from £50K - £120K; based on the previous factors that need to be considered. A bespoke oak framed glazed extension is the perfect way to add value to your home living lifestyle whilst increasing the value of your property.
THE DETAILS If you are thinking of building with oak and would like to discuss your potential project with one of our friendly experts, simply get in touch today. Richmond Oak Conservatories Ltd. 01892 481417 www.oakconservatories.co.uk
Will it be too hot in summer or too cold in the winter? The best, and most obvious, way to ensure your oak glazed extension is a comfortable temperature all year round is to use the highest quality glass. We only recommend the best double glazing in the industry, here at Richmond Oak, a solar control glass which is toughened and has a self-cleaning surface. Its excellent thermal qualities ensure it reflects 86% heat on hot days and is the most efficient argon filled double glazing to retain heat on cold days. In addition, its 91% UV protection will protect the furniture and fabrics within your oak extension. We also highly recommend the use of roof vents that help control the climate by releasing hot air when required.
Care about why and what we do
Richmond Oak is a family-run business, based in East Sussex, with client projects across the South East. Passionate about what we do and care about why we do it, striving to provide an inspiring solution that accurately reflects our clients’ requirements. To create more space and light that ensures a greater sense of daily well-being and adds value to their home living environment, whether that be a place to enjoy with family, entertain friends or simply relax. From the design concept to a built reality of our beautiful bespoke oak conservatories, orangeries and garden rooms we are here to help and ensure clients have an enjoyable experience creating their new dream living space. P Luxury kitchens from Poggenpohl
58 NOVEMBER 2019
oggenpohl has always been a pioneer. For over 125 years, their team has been developing, designing and producing luxury kitchens in their factory in Herford. People and their needs, social transformation and foresight into emerging trends are Poggenpohl’s core values, bringing their exceptionally high standard to customers all over the world. The consequence for Poggenpohl: today a kitchen is simply what a kitchen should provide for people. Workshop or workplace, adventure area or part-time office, separated or as the heart of the dwelling – because a kitchen makes the retreat into the self just as possible as the encounter with family or friends. Sometimes it is dominant and noble, while at times it retreats and integrates quietly into the events of living. Poggenpohl creates options for every lifestyle and independent person, utilising their years of experience to ensure the highest level of quality. Poggenpohl Tunbridge wells, opened December 2018; Situated on The Pantiles, this small but perfectly designed studio hints at what is achievable by showcasing fragments of Poggenpohl’s product ranges. From the outside, the historical building is a subtle dark green façade, complimenting the unspoilt beauty and elegant charm of The Pantiles walkway. Behind the freshly renovated facade, customers can expect a modern contrasting range: the award-winning +VENOVO is the focus of the new studio, with its elegant, functional and minimalist design. This innovative kitchen newcomer has been designed deliberately as a solitaire, to stand alone in rooms and be attractive from all sides. Studio manager, Martin Bepey comments, I am delighted to have joined this prestigious luxury German Brand, Poggenpohl, as manager of their newly opened Tunbridge Wells Studio. reating more space in homes since 2003 our company is highly proficient in all aspects of construction including extensions, loft and garage conversions, new conservatories and orangeries. We conform to industry standards and only employ teams of skilled and experienced carpenters, tilers, plasterers and glaziers Here at Morespace, we believe in offering our customers a simple and hassle-free way of doing business. No hard sell, but a range of products and effective advice to substantially improve the comfort of your existing conservatory. We provide three cost effective solutions to solve most problems experienced with conservatories today of being either …too hot, too cold, it leaks, it’s too bright, too noisy … or it’s just unusable! Insulated replacement panels as a substitute for old inefficient polycarbonate or glass sheeting. A very affordable solution that can be installed in a day with minimal disruption. Insulated converted roofs. This is an excellent alternative if you’re looking for a tiled look and your existing roof is in good condition. Most modern roofs are sufficiently robust to accommodate this lightweight solution which can be undertaken in a few days with minimal disruption. A bespoke insulated replacement roof. This option is a bit more expensive requiring a structural check of the existing frames and possibly foundations to support any additional weight. You are now also, as it’s a replacement, required to seek Building Regulations and sometimes Planning approvals! This is not a problem, as our replacement roofs meet current standards and we can arrange this for you as well… but whichever solution you

ormerly the Polhill Arms in Halstead for many years the building has been painstakingly restored by the family who own Farningham Oak - long established Kent quality furniture retailers who started their original cottage industry working from an old farm on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors. “We used to let the customers wander all over our house - except for a couple of rooms and buy anything they wanted and take it away” said Peter one of the Directors - it gave us a great insight into how good furniture is constructed and taught us all about the correct proportions and style which are really important skills and cannot be learned overnight. This helps us tremendously when customers ask our advice as mistakes can be time consuming and expensive for them. fter experiencing some mild winters could this be the year the beast strikes back? Is your flat roof ready to cope? Are you one of 70% of home owners in the UK incorporating a mineral felt flat roof ? Mineral felt generally has a slow breakdown often allowing water ingress to cause unnecessary damage before anything can be visibly detected within the home. A failing roof & the warning signs- look for signs of cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights etc. Beware of blisters on the roof surface, during colder months they can become brittle and crack. THE HOME-OWNER SHOULD ALSO BE MADE AWARE that insurance companies will no longer accept any liability for any external or internal damage caused by a leaking flat roof which is over 10 years old. Kitchen tours:
the Canham’s Neptune kitchen
W
hat was once a cow shed and haybarn has now been converted into a bright, modern home with an uplifting, classic-meetscontemporary kitchen, designed by Neptune Tonbridge, at its heart. When you’re about to embark upon a kitchen renovation, one of the biggest set of decisions you’ll face is which company to work with on the design of your kitchen, whether to have it made by them or by a carpenter and joiner, and which builder should install it. But when Jonathan and Suzy Canham moved into their barn conversion home in the Kent parish of Frittenden, they opted for a local brand that specialised in all three areas and would be able to create a kitchen design unique to their home, to make it using natural timber and traditional joinery, and to fit it all too with a reassuring Lifetime Guarantee as a parting gift.
Designing the Canham’s kitchen “The kitchen was very small,” explained Jonathan Canham. “It was split over two levels with a separate utility room. We lived with it for the first year or so, but we were desperate to make it a nicer space to live in.” Before the Canham’s even started thinking about cabinetry, they decided with the help of their architect friend and Neptune kitchen designer, Vicky, that they should remodel the space, taking down walls to open up the room. Vicky helped them to envisage the bigger picture, advising them at every stage of the project so that not only would their kitchen be aesthetically more pleasing, but it would become a space that was easier and more enjoyable to spend time in every day. When it came to deciding on how they wanted 74 NOVEMBER 2019
their kitchen to look though, they knew immediately want they wanted. “We walked into Neptune Tonbridge and fell in love straight away with Chichester,” said Suzy. “We also loved Suffolk and the sleekness of Limehouse, but for us, we felt Chichester was the perfect compromise between tradition and today. I was particularly drawn in by the layout and colour of the Chichester kitchen they had on display.” Everybody has items on their wish list when they decide to get a new kitchen. On Jonathan and Suzy’s was a kitchen island in a different colour to the main cabinetry, a larder, and Neptune’s Cranbrook shiplap panelling for adding texture to their walls. “We got all of that, and I actually got two larders,” said Suzy. The Canham’s also made the most of Neptune’s bespoke workshop based in their Wiltshire HQ. “There were so many workarounds,” commented Vicky, one of the kitchen designers at Neptune Tonbridge. “I designed bespoke pieces to conceal the fuse box and boiler, and adapted the larders and cooker surrounds too. Jonathan is 6ft 7in tall and does about 90% of the cooking [his statistic not mine!] and so I needed to make sure everything worked with the room but also for them as a family. We also chose a marble-like quartz work surface so that it was practical and hassle-free to live with, carrying it up behind the hob to act as a splashback. It has a polished finish so reflects the light beautifully and is a subtle way to make the room feel bigger.” When asked how to describe their Neptune kitchen renovation, Jonathan used the word ‘perfect’, while Suzy said quietly, “the whole thing has been a bit of a dream actually.” Book your complimentary 90-minute kitchen design appointment at Neptune Tonbridge. www.neptune.com

New from Freelands Tiles
Freelands Tiles of Dunton Green are excited to launch a new collection of Porcelain Tiles.
I
nside-Out is a premium range of co-ordinating indoor and outdoor porcelain tiles. Creating a seamless transition from inside your home to your outdoor space, Inside-Out will extend your living area into your garden. This slip-resistant range of tiles features a 20mm frost-resistant outdoor porcelain, and matching 10mm indoor porcelain. Available to order in a wide range of colours, InsideOut will transform your home, creating a stylish interior and co-ordinated outdoor setting.
A SEAMLESS TRANSITION FROM INDOORS TO OUT • Ideal for both internal and external installations, providing a tangible benefit over most natural stone products that tend to be suitable only for internal and external use, but rarely both. • The 10mm tile is designed for internal use and is slip resistant, attractive and easy to clean. • The 20mm external product co-ordinates perfectly, and has an added HD slip-resistant surface making it perfect for a wide range of outdoor settings.
LOW POROSITY, FROST & STAINRESISTANT • The Inside-Out range will not be damaged by frost, is highly stain-resistant and will not discolour due to algae. This is due to the process in which the product is made that ensures it does not absorb water. • In contrast, natural stone is very porous and needs to be regularly sealed to prevent staining and to reduce the risk of algae discolouration. 76 NOVEMBER 2019
LOW MAINTAINANCE
• Inside-Out Tiles are 100% colourfast, even after decades under the sun, and it does not change colour when wet. • The product requires little maintenance and is second only to diamond in hardness. It is extremely resistant to scratching. • Inside–Out Tiles are manufactured from raw materials in a process that uses recycled raw materials. The tiles have a very low whole life environmental cost.
STRONG & HARD WEARING • Inside-Out porcelain tiles are incredibly strong which means the 20mm outdoor tiles can be laid directly onto stone pedestals, speeding up the laying process and reducing the installation costs. • The tiles can even be used on driveways when installed onto a solid base using a suitable tile adhesive.
EASY TO LAY • The 20mm outdoor tiles can also be laid onto pedestals, making the tiles ideal for use on roof terraces and balconies. • The 10mm internal tile can be laid in a standard manner with tile adhesive. Please visit our showroom to see the range for yourself. We have lots of different sizes and styles on display to help you choose which product is right for you. Generally the Inside-Out tiles are available on a 2 week lead time. We offer a free delivery service on the product and we are open 7 days a week including 10-2 on Sundays.

MELLOW YELLOW 3 ways to decorate with yellow at home
Z
esty, energising and robust, yellow is the versatile, happy-go-lucky colour that easily brightens up home décor. Go for bold this season by opting for a warm yellow shade that is in line with the deep, rich jewel tones that are trending for Autumn 2019. Take a cue from Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor atFurniture Choice, who shares 3 ways to decorate with yellow at home. Make a statement with a yellow and grey feature wall Take on this trend in the living room with bold colour blocked yellow and grey walls. While these two contrasting shades balance each other out, this is nonetheless a daring look that works best alongside strong modern pieces with clean, simple elements. When done right, yellow adds a sunny burst to the room while grey’s warm, neutral tone is a calming, sophisticated presence to the space. “A yellow and grey feature wall is a refreshing choice for the living room as it provides a healthy dose of colour in colder months,” Rebecca explains. “Opt for a light shade of grey such as dove grey as it will bring out the bright and airy qualities of yellow.” “Take the opportunity to also colour block in smalls doses, with yellow plant pots, vases, rugs and cushions. This ties the room together for a cohesive look.” Use pops of yellow in a home office to boost creativity For a more subtle approach that doesn’t entail painting the walls, look at incorporating pops of sunny yellow in other parts of the home such as the home office. As a colour that inspires creativity and represents optimism, the addition of yellow to the study may just help get the creative juices flowing. “Introducing bright yellow hues such as lemon
78 NOVEMBER 2019
or canary to your home office can easily be done without requiring a huge overhaul,” Rebecca says. “A simple wooden chair in yellow is an instant way to uplift a workspace with this cheerful, stimulating colour. The welcoming effect when paired with oak furniture can be further emphasised with other pops of yellow such as artwork and accessories that make the room feel more energised and dynamic.” Accent with trendy yellow tones in the dining room Yellow also works beautifully in the dining room, lending warmth and cheer to the heart of the home. Pick a deep yellow shade like mustard, honey or butterscotch; these darker yellow accents are set to be a major colour trend for Autumn 2019 and bring a fresh, vibrant twist to neutral palettes. “Small pops of yellow can really add personality and bring life to a dining space,” Rebecca explains. “Look for accessories like cups and plates in a rich, golden butterscotch yellow for a splash of colour, and fill a cheerful yellow vase with fresh flowers to create an inviting atmosphere.” www.furniturechoice.co.uk

FABULOUS FLOORS in the round
TIMELESS CLASSIC
There’s something extremely stylish about a black and white floor. It’s a true classic but also very of-the-moment. It can be used to easily create a timeless interior and works effortlessly with all styles of property, from rustic country home to city apartment. Whilst there are endless pattern combinations and designs, the chequer board is the simplest and most iconic. The white tiles reflect the light and the black tiles absorb it, creating a bold statement. Sticking to a monotone colour scheme creates a very dramatic, tailored look, but if that’s a little too severe other materials can be added to soften the appearance. Accents of marble and luxe metallics can make a bathroom feel very feminine - and indoor greenery will instantly soothe the soul. Organic materials, like wood and stone, can also be used for a more contemporary rustic feel. www.harveymaria.com

The new collaboration with Angela, allowed us to produce this bold circular rug, like an enlarged antique ceramic plate with a central ram. Welcome to the George & Dragon, a traditional English country pub nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Downe, near Bromley. We take pride in our carefully selected choice of real ales and homemade seasonal food. We strive to keep the value of a country pub alive by offering a homely and relaxing atmosphere together with quality food and drink. Downe Village is famous for being the home to the English Naturalist Charles Darwin and his family. Downe House, now a museum, was where Darwin worked on his theories of evolution by natural selection, which he had conceived in London before moving to Downe. He loved living in the village, visiting the local pubs, shops and going on his many walks with nature. Come and take a look to find out why. SILENT POOL GIN CHRISTMAS Get ready to make a splash with gin-spiring Christmas gifts from Silent Pool Gin.
A
ward-winning Silent Pool Gin was launched just five years ago but is already one of the UK’s most popular premium gin brands. It is a contemporary London Dry gin and is handcrafted at a small, independently owned distillery in Surrey using a unique four-stage distillation process and a recipe that combines 24 botanicals and water from the Silent Pool itself, which is adjacent to the distillery. The result is a gin of clarity and depth of flavour with complex yet refreshing notes of florals and citrus. It is beautifully balanced in a G&T paired with Indian tonic water and a twist of orange zest to garnish, smooth enough to serve neat, and also exceptional in cocktails. The iconic teal and copper embossed bottle features an intricate botanical design that is shared across a range of Silent Pool Gin glassware, candle holders and bar accessories. Each makes a stunning and highly individual Christmas gift for gin lovers, whether they are friends and family or you are treating yourself! Each Silent Pool Gin Christmas Cracker contains a 5cl bottle of gin together with the essential festive hats and jokes. There’s no better way to kick off your festive feast (£50 per box of six). The Silent Pool Gin Gift Box (£67) includes two Silent Pool Gin Copa glasses alongside a 70cl bottle of Silent Pool Gin. Or for £20 you can purchase a Silent Pool Gin Miniature Gift Set, a stunning fold out box that displays two 5cl gin bottles. Silent Pool Gin glasses have quickly acquired cult status amongst gin collectors thanks to their beautiful design, and are available in a choice of long-stemmed Copa glasses (£12 each or £40 for six) or tumblers (£12 each or £72 for six). Meanwhile the Silent Pool Gin bar kit includes everything you need for a super-stylish home bar: 90 NOVEMBER 2019
ice bucket (£20), bar runner (£8.50), pourer (£4), jigger (£8.50) apron (£22) and Silent Pool Gin Mists (£10 each), which are liquid garnishes to spritz over your G&T. The Silent Pool Distillers worked with Coln Valley Smokehouse to create their truly delicious gininfused Smoked Salmon (£12.50), bursting with flavour and ideal for canapés or a festive brunch. Highly aromatic soy wax candles, each poured into a repurposed and professionally cut Silent Pool Gin bottle, are available in Bergamot & Lavender or Juniper & Cassia Bark (£22 each) variants. The Christmas Spirit candle (£16) is a warming, festive blend of juniper, clove, cinnamon bark and orange essential oils reminiscent of mulled wine and crackling log fires. Gorgeous glass candle holders (£8 small size, £12 large size) feature an intricate copper coloured casing that casts flickering shadows of the 24 botanicals when a night light candle is lit within. Finally, rechargeable bottle string lights (£10) enable your empty Silent Pool Gin bottle to enjoy a new life as a beautiful table lamp! Find our more at silentpooldistillers.com

ooking for deliciously fresh Turkish food with mouth-wateringly authentic flavours, amazing quality ingredients, generous portions… and all served in a welcoming, buzzy, convivial atmosphere in the heart of Bromley and Tonbridge? Welcome to Havet Restaurant. Our ethos is ‘fresh food, daily’ which means we’re dedicated to sourcing the very best produce available so that our talented chefs can create delicious dishes, bursting with flavour. Everything on our menu is freshly made according to recipes passed to us by our parents and grandparents and given a modern twist. Every dish and menu item is prepared under our roof using the best and freshest ingredients possible, every single day. We’re up early to go to the markets and bring home only the premium meats and top-notch fresh produce, just as our families have done for generations before us when preparing home-cooked food. Our expert chefs create meals that are abundant with all the amazing flavours of Turkish cooking. Combining the sun-drenched flavours of the Mediterranean with the earthy, delicately spiced dishes of the Middle East, we’ve created a menu that celebrates the best of our parents’ homeland. High quality ingredients mean great tasting food. Taking our cue from the success of meze dining, our extensive menu is flexible – you can tailor a meal to suit your tastes and mood, choosing your meat and your sides in a ‘pick and mix’ approach that our diners love. At Havet, you’ll find all your favourite Turkish, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern-influenced dishes and plenty of fish and vegetarian choices too. Choose from traditional

Turkish meze, mousaka, fish kebabs and perfectly marinated meats. Our kebabs are cooked over our traditional open mangal (charcoal grill). Havet is not about fine dining: ours is a busy, vibrant restaurant with a lot of atmosphere… and our menus reflect that. We may use the best of fresh ingredients and create all our dishes in-house without relying on mass-produced ingredients, but we achieve a balance between offering the very best Turkish cuisine, yet remaining an affordable place to eat.

SWEET & SOUR ALBACORE,RADICCHIO & HAZELNUTS A smart dinner party option.
“This was one of the first dishes I put on the menu at Fish Face in Sydney as a young chef and I am still as proud of it now as I was 12 years ago,” says Australian chef Josh Niland. “Yellowfin tuna, bonito or blue mackerel are all great alternate species.” Ingredients: (Serves 6) • 600g trimmed centre-cut albacore loin (alternatively mackerel or tuna) • 60ml olive oil • 1 head white radicchio, leaves torn into bite-sized pieces • Sea salt flakes and freshly cracked black pepper • 3tbsp roasted hazelnuts • Sweet and sour currant sauce: • 120ml extra virgin olive oil • 150g French shallots, finely diced • 150ml white wine • 375ml white wine vinegar • 150ml water • 75g caster sugar • 125g dried currants • Sea salt flakes and freshly cracked black pepper
94 NOVEMBER 2019
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to the lowest possible temperature. 2. For the sweet and sour sauce, heat the oil in a saucepan and sweat the shallots over a low heat for 15 minutes until just golden. Add the wine, vinegar, water, sugar, currants and a little salt and pepper and simmer briskly for four minutes, until the shallots are very tender and the sauce is thick and syrupy. You should have 225ml of sauce after the reduction. Cool and chill until needed. 3. Cut the fish you’re using into even-sized quarter planks, then chill, uncovered, in the refrigerator. 4. Place a wire rack inside a baking tray to act as a trivet to cook the albacore on. Cut some baking paper to fit the size of the wire rack and, using a small knife, cut enough holes over the paper to allow the juices to strain through during cooking. Arrange the fish on the prepared wire rack and place in the oven. The oven should be between 90-100°C (194-212°F) throughout the cooking process. If you feel the oven is hotter than this then rest a pair of tongs or a wooden spoon in the door to hold the oven ajar. The internal temperature for the fish should be 40°C (104°F) when measured with a probe thermometer. Ideally, the fish should still look quite raw but with a gently cooked texture (be careful here as, unfortunately, albacore dries out very quickly during cooking). 5. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a frying pan
over a high heat and saute the radicchio leaves. Season well with salt and, at the last minute when the leaves are blistered and lightly wilted, add the roast hazelnuts and four generous tablespoons of the sweet and sour sauce. Keep warm. 6. Leave the fish to rest briefly, then slice three slices per portion. Brush with olive oil, season with sea salt, cracked black pepper and drape over the sweet and sour radicchio and hazelnuts. Serve. RESTAURANT REVIEW
Bill’s restaurant & bar, Sevenoaks This month, Food editor Regan Anderton has visited Bill’s Restaurant to give you her view on their menu. Other local restaurant reviews, recipes and dinner party game ideas can be found at www.whatiatelastnight.com
Ambiance
Drink
Bill’s is located in Lady Boswell House, a newly refurbished large stone building that’s full of history, and has the definite wow factor with colourful outside seating, and an interior that’s reflective of many different era’s with comfortable seating and areas for dining or drinking.
There’s a well stocked bar with plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails to choose from. We opted for a bottle of the house white, an easy drinking Spanish white that accompanied the Mojo chicken well. 42-44 London Road, Bligh’s Meadow Shopping Centre, Sevenoaks TN13 1AS. www.bills-website.co.uk
Service The staff were very friendly and welcoming. My guest had a nut allergy and they were very careful to help guide us through the allergens menu, and made alternative suggestions where required.
Food From Sunday to Thursday (5pm until close), there’s a very reasonable set dinner menu at two courses for £17.50, or three courses for £20.50. Dishes range from Bill’s special burger, to a delicious sounding Asian chicken salad. We ordered from the main menu, and to start, opted for the veggie sharing plate - a generous portion of fried halloumi, with smashed avocado, creamy tzatziki, a tangy red pepper dip, crisp fried cauliflower that we loved, spiced tortillas, and olives. For main, the Glow Bowl with Mojo marinated chicken skewers was packed with nutritious goodness, so we didn’t feel too guilty about ordering the delicious warm mini doughnuts served with a white chocolate sauce and fresh strawberries. 96 NOVEMBER 2019
