The Arts Society Tonbridge Talk: The Punch and Judy Show The Punch and Judy Show: A subversive symbol since Comedia dell’ Arte. Mr Punch – the most famous puppet character of all time. His comic irreverence gave “Punch” magazine its title. His anarchic vitality has inspired opera, ballet and punk rock and his enduring popularity has seen his likeness on goods ranging from Victorian silverware to computer video games. Appearing in England in 1662, Punch is descended from the Italian Clown Pulcinella of the 15th C Commedia Dell’ Arte tradition. Even today This Lord of Misrule uses his slapstick to dispense with oppressive authority, be it politicians, political Correctness or the devil, while proclaiming his notorious refrain; ‘That’s the way to do it!” Lecturer: Bertie Pearce Lecture begins at 2.30pm and will be followed by tea and biscuits. Interview with a prince
James Darch joins the cast of Cinderella in the Churchill Theatre’s Christmas Pantomime. He joins Birds of a Feather star Lesley Joseph (Fairy Godmother), Charlotte Haines (Cinderella) and Phil Reid (Buttons) in this festive treat for all ages! Why are you looking forward to playing Prince Charming? I can’t wait to be back playing Prince Charming again this year, it’s the perfect way to spend the festive period. There’s something I secretly love about dressing up as a royal and it’s the one time of the year I allow myself to take time on my hair - a prince is only as good as his hair (the majority of my character is the finely quaffed comb over!). Harry and Megan are proving that, even in 2018, the British public still love the prince and princess story so Cinderella is the perfect show to bring to the stage this year.
“There’s something I secretly love about dressing up as a royal”
22 NOVEMBER 2018
How did you get in to acting? Have you starred in a pantomime before? Can you tell us a bit about your career. I came into acting a little late compared to most, studied A levels (in Geography, Law and Business... a little different to most actors), dropped out of a Geography Degree and headed to drama school aged 20. Since graduating I’ve been lucky to work predominantly in musical theatre on the West End as well as film, television and commercial work. This will be my third outing as Prince Charming, each of my Cinderella’s have been a total delight and I can bet top dollar that this year I will be no different!
Are you excited to be working alongside Lesley Joseph? I’ve never met Lesley, however I’ve heard wonderful things so I’m excited to meet her and get to know her whilst messing around in Bromley! What is it you enjoy about pantomime? Why do you think people enjoy coming to the pantomime? Pantomime is an age old British tradition - it was the first form of theatre I ever saw so holds a place in my heart. I always view Cinderella as the panto of ALL pantos. In 2018 pantomime has changed massively - the sets, the lights, the scenery, the 3D screens, the flying. The most impressive part is that they incorporate all this whilst keeping the story and comedy at the centre of it all. How well do you know Bromley? Have you worked at The Churchill Theatre or seen a show here before? This is going to be my first time in Bromley and at the Churchill Theatre. All I know so far is that there’s a PureGym next door which will help me enjoy my numerous mince pies without the guilt! What’s on your Christmas list this year? All I want from Santa this year is a new helmet for my ski trip to the Swiss Alps - preferably a blue one!

Aladdin at the Orchard Theatre The Orchard Theatre’s annual Open House event was the setting for an interview with the stars of this year’s pantomime, Aladdin. Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Ricky K, playing Wishee Washee and our dame David Robbins, playing Widow Twankey.
Ricky: Panto is one of the first things you see and it’s often your first introduction to the theatre… David: …and you go with your family, so the little ones aren’t as scared. They enjoy it and hopefully keep coming back. Ricky: It really is the magic of panto!
We can’t wait to welcome you to Dartford for our panto this year! How many pantomimes have you done now? David Robbins: (counts on hands) 18? Ricky K: I’ve done 10. I took a break for a bit. Was that for Britain’s Got Talent? How did the programme change your life? Ricky: It was a great experience and loads of people recognise me now in Greggs, which I’m very excited about, as I love Greggs. I did the show to get my routine out to a wider audience. I mean it’s had 8 million views now and that’s just my mum! It’s so lovely because it means I get to do pantos with great casts at Christmas and then I get to do my show through the year too. David, I hear you have some other theatrical talents too? David: I trained on a Stage Management course and specialised in costume and props. When not working as a dame or an actor I did work as a wiggie in theatre. I used to work on Hairspray, Sister Act and tours of Barnum. So do you make all of your own costumes and wigs? David: I don’t make everything now as I don’t have the time but I have a hand in it – I oversee and design and if I can make anything I will, but I do make all these wigs (pointing to his fabulous red wig). What do you think is so important about pantomime? Especially for Families. David: It’s that thing of going to the theatre, keeping it alive and keeping theatre going. Panto yes or even a kid’s show, whatever it is, take your kids to the theatre. 24 NOVEMBER 2018
“Comedy is king in pantomime and I’m very excited to do the scenes with Marti Pellow and everyone in the cast”
What are you going to bring to the show? Ricky: My good looks and six pack. David: Fabulous frocks! Ricky: A good laugh on stage. Comedy is king in pantomime and I’m very excited to do the scenes with Marti Pellow and everyone in the cast. It’s a new area for me too – I’m a Yorkshireman who lives in Newcastle and I don’t do much in the south. Everyone will be getting the google translate out! (laughing)… and what about Aladdin? Why should people come to The Orchard Theatre’s panto? David: It’s going to be amazing. Ricky: Bigger, brighter, better… #YouDontWantToMissAThing Aladdin is at The Orchard Theatre on Sat 8 – Sun 30 December. Book online orchardtheatre.co.uk or call the Ticket Office 01322 220000.

Disinheritance T
A quick guide to cutting someone out of your will
he message is slowly starting to get through to the public – making a will is an important life decision that could save your relatives a great deal of heartache once you’ve gone. You can express your wishes, designate who gets what, and that’s the end of it. Or is it? What are your rights if you do decide to leave someone out of your will, and how can you ensure that your last wishes are not challenged after you’re gone?
The Inheritance Act 1975 If the nearest relatives (the spouse, children & dependant*) feel that a will does not make adequate provision for them, and then they may be able to challenge it. However, because ‘adequate provision’ is such a vague term, it is open to interpretation and, therefore, dispute. If a person challenges a will under this provision, then the courts will look at a number of factors, such as the financial situation of the claimant, and the needs of other people named in the will. However, it’s an area that’s filled with so many shades of grey, it can be almost impossible to navigate a clear path through, and someone, somewhere, is invariably going to end up disappointed.
Why the rise in challenges to wills? Much of the increase in inheritance disputes has (rightly or wrongly) been put at the door of what is termed ‘blended families’ – those units where spouses are on their second marriage and bring with them children from a previous marriage or partnership. The fact that step-children are often factored into a will can cause conflict between blood relatives and those who are part of the family unit through marriage.
Leaving a child out of your will To avoid all the potential unpleasantness that comes with contesting a will, there are things that you can do to avoid the situation in the first place, when initially drawing up the will document. If you do decide to leave someone out then it’s important you make your reasoning clear, preferably in writing. they can be left with your solicitor for up to six years and show that the child was considered, and that the final decision was not a ‘spur of the moment’ impulse, but a measured and 28 NOVEMBER 2018
carefully thought-out choice. If you are suffering from dementia (even in the very earliest stages) then it’s important that a doctor testifies that you are of ‘sound mind’ and are fully mentally aware of the contents of your will. Having your doctor act as a witness could help prevent the will being questioned later on due to the grounds of mental incapacity. Rather than cutting someone out entirely, it may be a good idea to leave them a token gesture or offer an inheritance amount on condition that the child does not contest the will. Finally, one way of ensuring a fair distribution of your estate is to place it in trust, as long as it is not obvious that it has been done to deprive a child of their inheritance. The money will be controlled by the trustees, and it’s usually only worth doing this if the amount exceeds £20,000. If you’re having trouble deciding how to draw up your will, or if you are thinking of omitting a close relative and you want to ensure your wishes are adhered to please contact, Jeremy Wilson, Head of Estate Administration at Clarkson Wright & Jakes. T: 01689 887847. E: jeremy.wilson@cwj.co.uk *or others such as former wife or husband who hasn’t remarried, a child of the deceased, a person who at some time was treated as a child of the family in relation to a marriage of which the deceased was a party, a cohabitee of the deceased, a person being maintained by the deceased immediately before the deceased’s death.

Diana: Her Fashion Story at Kensington Palace Until 28 February 2019

Trace the evolution of the Princess’s style, from the demure, romantic outfits of her first public appearances, to the glamour, elegance and confidence of her later life
F
rom her earliest royal engagements, everything Diana wore was closely scrutinised. In this elegant exhibition at her former London home, Diana’s relationship with her favourite designers will be explored through a display of some of their original fashion sketches created just for the Princess. The exhibition highlights how she navigated her unique position in the public eye: learning to use her image to engage and inspire people, and to champion the causes she cared about. Eleri Lynn, curator of ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’, said, ‘Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most photographed women in the world, and every fashion choice she made was closely scrutinised. Our exhibition explores the story of a young woman who had to quickly learn the rules of royal and diplomatic dressing, who in the process put the spotlight on the British fashion industry and designers.’ Don’t miss this extraordinary collection of garments, ranging from the chic Catherine Walker suits that made up Diana’s ‘working wardrobe’ and glamorous evening wear including the iconic velvet gown famously worn at the White House when the Princess danced with John Travolta. ston Martin is underlining its commitment to its classic division with the launch of a new dedicated showroom in Mayfair. Aston Martin Works’ new Heritage satellite showroom is open for business. Situated with the Aston Martin Brand Experience Centre at No.8 Dover Street, the Works Heritage showroom is a convenient destination for customers interested in acquiring a heritage model or learning about the restoration services available at Aston Martin Works Service in Newport Pagnell. The Aston Martin Works Heritage showroom complements the Aston Martin Mayfair dealership that has been a firm fixture on London’s Park Lane for many years, showcasing the full range of current Aston Martin models. The Dover Street showroom allows a pure heritage focus in a Central London location, meaning that the incredible heritage story of Aston Martin Works, the Newport Pagnell factory and the iconic cars built there will now reach a wider audience. Aston Martin has seen a growth in the market for heritage cars, highlighted by the sell-out success of the DB4 G.T. ston Martin aims to bring luxury private transport to the sky with its Volante Vision Concept aircraft – a flying autonomous, hybrid-electric vehicle that can take off vertically. This is the first time the British car brand, traditionally known for its luxury sports cars, has ventured into aircraft design. Named after the Italian word for flying, the Volante was debuted at this year’s Farnborough Air Show, alongside other aircraft designs including Boeing’s hypersonic aircraft concept. Produced in partnership with Cranfield University, Cranfield Aerospace Solutions and Rolls-Royce, the concept aircraft aims to bring luxury personal transportation to the sky. 44 NOVEMBER 2018
The Volante Vision Concept is a demonstration of Aston Martin’s design ingenuity. With room for three adults, the concept is a near future study that previews a flying autonomous hybrid-electric vehicle for urban and inter-city air travel, providing fast, efficient and congestion free luxurious travel. The Volante Vision Concept will take full advantage of the latest advances in aerospace, electrification and autonomous technologies, coupled with Aston Martin’s signature design. Combining the strengths of Cranfield University, Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin, this new concept unites the world’s best aerospace experts, propulsion specialists and designers. The skills offered by each partner ensures that the Volante Vision Concept promises
“Named after the Italian word for flying, the Volante was debuted at this year’s Farnborough Air Show”
to the skies to offer an exciting alternative transportation solution for customers across the globe. While the company are not currently releasing any further technical or specification details, the aircraft appears to be powered by three propellors, one large horizontal propellor at the rear, and two tilted propellors at the front. Aston Martin President and CEO Dr Andy Palmer said: “With the population in urban areas continuing to grow, congestion in towns and cities will become increasingly demanding. We need to look at alternative solutions to reduce congestion, cut pollution and improve mobility. Air travel will be a crucial part in the future of transportation, the Volante Vision Concept is the ultimate luxury mobility solution. Humans have always spent on average, one hour commuting to and from work. The distance we live from our workplace has been determined by the methods of transportation available. The Volante Vision Concept will enable us to travel further with our hourly commute, meaning we are able to live further away from where we work. Cities will grow, and towns that are today too far away from cities to be commutable will become suburban. With Aston Martin and our ‘dream team’ of British innovation across industry and academia, we are positioned to change the future of transportation, giving our customers a new dimension of freedom”. Professor Iain Gray, Director of Aerospace at Cranfield University said: “We’re delighted to be part of this exciting and forward-thinking project that showcases British innovation and the way that Cranfield works with and supports business. The Volante Vision Concept exemplifies Cranfield’s unique capabilities in digital aviation, autonomous systems and the electrification of aerospace, and is an excellent example of how the University combines cutting-edge research, academic rigour and real-world application.” Director, Rolls-Royce Electrical Rob Watson said: “We are delighted to be involved in the Volante Vision Concept, which showcases the best of British design and engineering. Rolls-Royce has already delivered hybrid-electric systems for other applications including ships and trains, and we’re very excited about the potential of the technology in aerospace. This is a great opportunity to collaborate on a pioneering project which will use high performance hybrid-electric propulsion technologies for personal air mobility concepts that could transform the future of transportation.” Before making its foray into aircraft design, Aston Martin did not restrict itself to automobiles. In 2016 the company designed a powerboat, and last year it collaborated with submersibles manufacturer Triton to create a concept for a limited-edition submarine. www.astonmartin.com. www.rolls-royce.com. www.cranfieldaerospace.com/volante. www.astonmartin.com/media

WEEK HIGHLIGHTS From Beckham to Burberry, all the news from the spring/summer collections. WORDS: Katie Wright
A
s catwalks are being dismantled and the giant blow-up Burberry bear that’s been seated at Marble Arch is deflated, the world’s most in-demand models, make-up artists, editors and buyers are hotfooting it to Milan for the next round of shows, which means London Fashion Week is officially done and dusted for another season. And what a season it’s been. We’ve seen much-anticipated debuts, the return of established names and the revamp of one very famous brand, all in the space of five action-packed days. So what does all this tell us about what’s in the store for spring/summer 2019? Here’s all the news you might have missed from the biggest shows at the British style extravaganza...
victoria beckham
Alexa Chung Style icon turned designer Chung has long been a regular on the fashion week front row, but this season she was behind the scenes, holding the first ever show for her eponymous clothing brand. The 34-year-old was on a flight of fancy for spring, calling the collection ‘Arrivals and Departures’, which meant a holiday wardrobe of floaty midi dresses, safari style tailoring and travel-friendly jumpsuits, all in a muted 1970s colour palette. While other designers try to - and need to - grab headlines with zany clothing and make-up, Chung kept it simple and played to her major strength: Knowing exactly what women want to wear.

Victoria Beckham Celebrating 10 years of her own eponymous brand, Victoria Beckham showed in London for the first time after a decade on the New York schedule, but insisted the collection wasn’t a retrospective. Of course, there were the signatures Beckham has become known for - breezy silk midi dresses, sharp tailored jackets and bodycon knitwear for instance - while there was also a freshness in the use of colour and the sexiness of it all. Spaghetti strap and racer back slip dresses were as revealing as we’ve seen on the VB catwalk in

some time, and flashes of scarlet packed a punch. It was the skinny ankle-split trousers, however, which Beckham herself wore, that we think will be the big hit of SS19.
Burberry “This show is a celebration of the cultures, the traditions and the codes of this historic fashion house and of the eclecticism that makes up the beautifully diverse United Kingdom,” said Riccardo Tisci, Burberry’s newly appointed chief creative officer. In typically rebellious Tisci style, the show began with a slew of ladylike pencil and pleated skirts, pussy-bow blouses and paired-back trench coats, the bait and switch coming in the second half... Models on the catwalk during the Burberry SS19 show (Isabel Infantes/PA) The soundtrack surged and out came a riot of skin-tight zippered miniskirts, corseted dresses and punky vinyl coats. Judging by the reaction on social media, Burberry purists weren’t best pleased with the latter but the elegant opening impressed many.
Julien Macdonald If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, they say, and that seems to be the mantra of Julien Macdonald, who returned to the London schedule after a season’s sabbatical. Consequently we were treated to the usual all-out glam fest, a parade of glittering, sharp-shouldered gowns and extremely skimpy minidresses. Alongside the usual black and silver, there were pops of bright yellow, tangerine and fuchsia - expect to see these colourful creations on the red carpet once spring rolls around.
burberry
Rich fabrics? Check. Fabulous florals? Yep. Glamorous gowns? Plenty of them. All of the elements that make Erdem a favourite of red carpet walkers everywhere (not least the Duchess of Cambridge) were present on Monday, the stunning collection bolstered by a fascinating backstory. Erdem Moralioglu said he was inspired by Fanny and Stella, a pair of nineteenth century crossdressers who were, given fashion’s current obsession with all things genderless, well ahead of their time. Combining mannish tailoring with voluminous dresses in raspberry and duck egg blue, this opulent Victoriana look was a resounding victory for Erdem.
Isabel Infantes /PA Photos
Preen Alexa Chung wasn’t the only one thinking about travel for spring. At Preen, there was a nomadic theme and the show traversed eras too as vintage ruffles were clashed with cagoules and hiking boots. Models on the catwalk during the Preen SS19 show (Isabel Infantes/PA) Designers Thea Bregazzi and Justin Thornton said they had been thinking a lot about displaced peoples this season, but this wasn’t just lip service: The pair have pledged that a percentage of sales from the collection will go to charity Help Refugees.

Emerson Grange Care Home
Helping Couples to Remain Together The Care Suites at the new Emerson Grange Care Home means couples can remain living together along with receiving the support they need
W
e have all read the heart wrenching stories of couples being forced apart after years of marriage because one partner requires the care and support only a care home provides. Despite what you might hear in the press, the majority of care homes are fantastic, lively places often with facilities and finishing more akin to a high-quality hotel. But most care homes only provide single bedrooms, occasionally some with twin bedrooms. However, that has now changed with the opening of the new Emerson Grange Care Home, part of the luxurious Retirement Village, Emerson Park, in Hextable, Kent. Along with large single en-suite bedrooms they also provide a limited number of Care Suites. These are one bedroom apartments within the care home which include an en-suite double bedroom, lounge and kitchenette. Residents obviously still have access to communal lounges and the restaurant but the Care Suites provide far more privacy and space for those who require it. “Emerson Park is all about giving people more choice in older age,” commented Emerson Park general manager Paul Hart, “And our Care Suites are another example of this. So often I have witnessed couples having to live apart after many years of marriage because one requires 24-hour care. Our Care Suites mean this is no longer the case.” Although designed with couples in mind, Paul also explained that the Care Suites could be for single people as well, “By having your own lounge and kitchenette it not only provides more privacy but also more space and independence along with the reassurance that care and support is on hand 24-hours a day. Do I Need a Hearing Aid?
F
or those with a hearing loss hearing aids are not only good for helping you to hear better, but can contribute to better and more active lives, better quality of life and better overall health. According to Euro Trak UK data - a staggering 71% of hearing aid wearers wish they had obtained a hearing instrument sooner as they now realise how much they have been missing out. The research data goes on to indicate that wearers may experience a number of additional benefits to non-wearers who have a hearing loss: • Better quality of sleep. • The fact that they can hear better means that they are less likely to be made fun of or rejected. 73% of the hearing impaired population who do not own hearing aids have been teased about their hearing loss, with 37% saying that it happens regularly. For those wearing hearing aids only 5% said they were regularly teased. • When looking at general health the survey reveals wearers have a lower risk of developing depressive symptoms. • Less inclined to get dementia. • Less ‘worn out’ and tired in the evening, both physically and mentally. • Enjoy better social lives. • Improved mental and emotional health. • Perform better at work. 87% of working hearing aid owners state that their hearing aids are useful for their job. They also believe that hearing aids increase the chance of them getting promoted. So, if you have a hearing problem, don’t just ignore it. You too could benefit from better hearing, just like Tony. Tony Jacklin CBE is quite simply a golfing legend and one of the greatest British golfers of all time. He revitalised British and ultimately European golf with his remarkable exploits. He is the most

successful European Ryder Cup captain ever. What you may not realise is for the last 25 years he has been struggling with a hearing loss, wearing a hearing aid on both ears. Sound is such an important factor in Tony’s game, so that he knows how well the golf ball has been struck. He needs to be with the best care providers for his hearing health. Speaking about his hearing loss he finds the most difficult aspect is that people will assume that you can hear and unless you explain prior to playing that you are hard of hearing people think you’re ignorant! He champions awareness campaigns and admires the work organisations like the independent hearing aid sector does to help change perception of hearing loss. So much so he is a proud patron of the English Deaf Golf Association. ‘I see the value in working with Independent Hearing Aid Audiologists as they are able to provide the best products suited to my hearing needs with access to the newest technology available from around the world.’ ‘The service from independent’s is personal which when dealing with such an important sensory need is invaluable!’ - Tony Jacklin CBE Data provided by the EuroTrak UK survey 2018, completed by Anovum for EHIMA (European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers’ Association) For further information or to book a FREE hearing assessment then contact: Sound Advice Hearing, 531 Upper Elmers End Road, Beckenham BR3 3BF. Look into my heart...
If you develop chest pains, there are a wealth of tests you could be sent for to identify whether you have a heart problem. Here’s a quick look at the current main diagnostic tests for heart problems... WORDS: LISA SALMON ECG
A
doctor takes a patient’s medical and family history, asks questions about their lifestyle (how active they are and whether they smoke, etc), listens to their heart and lungs, and takes their blood pressure and pulse. “If there’s a significant degree of clinical suspicion that a problem could be cardiac, the NHS encourages GPs to do a fast-track referral to a cardiology clinic.
BLOOD TESTS Blood tests are used in relation to a number of heart conditions, the most common being cardiac enzyme tests, which help show if the heart muscle is damaged; full blood count, which measures different types of blood cells and can show if there’s an infection, and thyroid function tests, which detect an under or overactive thyroid, which can be linked to heart palpitations or a very slow or fast heart rate.
CHEST X-RAY If you have symptoms such as shortness of breath, a chest X-ray can help ascertain if it’s caused by a heart or lung condition. If a heart condition’s suspected, further tests will be recommended. Heart conditions that can be assessed by X-ray include heart failure, congenital heart disease and pericarditis (inflammation of the heart and lungs).
ANGIOGRAM An angiogram lets doctors look inside coronary arteries, to see where, and how severely, they’ve narrowed, and how effectively the heart’s pumping. Patients are given a local anaesthetic, where a catheter is passed into the artery. Using an X-ray, the catheter’s directed through the blood vessels and into the heart before a dye is injected, which shows any narrowed areas or blockages. There’s also a CT coronary angiogram, where the dye is injected into a small vein in the arm and a CT scan used to create an image of the patient’s heart. 62 NOVEMBER 2018
“An electrocardiogram (ECG) records the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart, via electrodes attached to the arms, legs and chest with small sticky patches”
An electrocardiogram (ECG) records the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart, via electrodes attached to the arms, legs and chest with small sticky patches. The test can help detect problems with the heart rate and show if a patient is having a heart attack, or has already had one. An ECG can also show if the heart is enlarged. However, a normal ECG doesn’t rule out significant coronary heart disease and other tests may be needed, such as a coronary angiogram.
ECHOCARDIOGRAM An echocardiogram - also known as an echo - uses sound waves to create a detailed picture of the heart, similar to ultrasound scans. A probe is moved over the skin of the chest, giving off pulses of high frequency sound waves which pass through the skin and ‘echo’ against the heart structures, reflecting them as moving pictures. The echo also gives information about the heart’s function and pumping action. It can be useful after recent heart attacks or heart failure, and is also used to assess people with heart valve problems or congenital heart disease.
MRI SCAN A cardiac MRI is used to view the heart’s structure and assess how well it’s pumping, so it’s useful for checking structural problems including congenital heart disease, wear and tear of the valves, heart damage after a heart attack, and the amount of healthy heart muscle if you have heart failure. MRI scans can also look at the heart’s blood supply and related conditions, such as angina and coronary heart disease. For more information, you can visit the British Heart Foundation website at www.bhf.org.uk

he major trend of autumn/winter, animal print is everywhere - but how do you style leopard spots or snakey stripes without looking like fashion roadkill? For starters, ignore the catwalks. Well, not entirely, because that’s where the trend originated, with Victoria Beckham’s abstract leopard print midi dress, Tom Ford’s skinny snake trousers, and Halpern’s sparking zebra frocks - plus so many leopard-spot coats we lost count. At Max Mara, Lara Stone and Gigi Hadid went on a style safari, clad in layer upon layer of leopard - and as cool as they looked on the runway, this is not, in all honesty, a look that works in real life. Instead, you want to take a leaf out of Beckham’s ever-stylish book, choosing one - and only one printed piece to showcase per outfit. These bold prints are best used sparingly, letting them take centre stage alongside neutral hues and sleek separates. There are so many gorgeous animal print midi dresses around, perfect for pairing with knee-high boots (or ankle boots and black tights when it gets colder). Leopard is the most prevalent print in the shops, but faux snakeskin is a chic choice for accessories, from muted grey or brown bags, to bright red or yellow boots. And a fluffy zebra stripe jumper is the ‘it’ knit of the season - team yours with skinny black jeans and a pair of statement earrings for a fun Eighties feels.

Top Tips to keep your bathroom toasty this Winter A t this time of year, no one wants to be rolling out of their warm bed into the bathroom and setting foot on a cold set of tiles. Bathroom specialists, Ripples, know the feeling and David Simpson, Showroom Manager at Ripples, has got a few top tips to help keep your bathroom cosy and stylish this Winter.
HAPPY FEET Underfloor heating is a must have in a bathroom nowadays. The comfort of waking up in the morning and not having to step on cold tiles is a life changing thing, especially if you are someone who hates waking up on a cold Winter’s morning.
SNUG SPACE Certain changes can immediately make the space cosier and more welcoming. Consider adding some

warmer style elements in the room, such as woodenlook tiles or a vanity unit painted in a deep colour such as Farrow and Ball’s new Paean Black or De Nimes. If space is in your favour, why not a Chaise longue or an arm chair?
BLISSFUL BATHS Baths are everybody’s best friend come Winter so if you’re buying a new bath consider what your bath is made of and your best friend gets better. Steel baths are a great option because they keep water warmer for longer. Creating a Sociable Living
A
brilliantly sociable living situation led Sarah and Anthony White to contact Origin to finally build the swimming pool they had always dreamed of. After selling a company, the Whites were able to purchase the two neighbouring houses and have friends come to live in each one. Knocking down the garden barriers made it clear that all that was missing from this otherwise ideal set up was a bespoke pool for them all to enjoy. Keen to find a reputable company that could manage the project from start to finish, the couple got in touch with Origin, the UK’s leading luxury indoor pool company, who quickly got to work on creating the couple’s beautiful indoor pool and spa.
The Right Time Not only did the White’s housing situation now perfectly suit the project, but the timing also could not have been better. Sarah explains: “We have three children; two of them have recently finished rather stressful exams. The new addition to the garden provides the perfect space for them to relax and have fun with friends every evening. I quite often look out of the kitchen window to see the lights turned on and the kids having a whale of a time, it’s absolutely wonderful.” 70 NOVEMBER 2018
The new addition is not only perfect for entertaining, but for exercise too, and Sarah now begins every day by swimming 30 lengths.

inspired to contact our friend who landscaped the whole area. It’s just brilliant – the garden has been completely transformed into something communal for all our neighbouring friends and family.”
Life with Origin
Revolutionised Space From the first ideas all the way through to the final build, the Whites had the full attention of the experts from Origin. The couple had regular meetings with the team, whilst the builders on site ensured they were kept informed with every single decision that was made. Sarah comments on the building process: “Origin were great with advising on how to incorporate a spa and a long pool, and even invited us to look at three of their other pools for inspiration. We experienced the flexibility of the service as they quickly reconfigured the plans to meet our new requests. “The space has been entirely revolutionised. What used to be an area of shrubs and trees is now completely useable. After the build, we were

Sarah and Anthony are delighted with their new pool and continue to be impressed with Origin’s services, even now the pool is complete. “Origin has been brilliant with the aftersales follow-up and we were not left alone with the new responsibility of looking after a pool. We chose to opt for Origin’s aftercare package; every month an engineer visits to carry out routine maintenance and check pool chemistry levels. Every query we’ve had has been answered immediately.” Origin has over 35 years’ experience building award-winning swimming pools. The company can work with you to build your dream pool house, just like they did for the White family. To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996.

INTERIORS updating your bathroom Top tips from Ripples Totally rad: whether it’s classic chrome, a beautiful pastel shade or an anthracite radiator, a new radiator in your bathroom (or anywhere else in your home), will really lift the space. New this year, the rose copper finish has been a big hit for Ripples. Patterns that please: if you want to give your home an early 2019 update then pulling out your current cloakroom floor and updating it with a patterned tiled floor will ensure that your new bathroom looks updated, refreshed and very on-trend. Hexagons, herringbone and pleasing patterns are big news in tiles. Consider tiling your hallway and cloakroom in the same tile to ensure that what can typically feel like a small space, seems as spacious as possible. Concrete dreams: Concrete is the unexpected star of the bathroom, we’ve been working with some of the UK’s biggest lifestyle bloggers at Ripples recently and concrete basins are certainly going down a storm. They will add an instant update to any bathroom. Tunbridge Wells, St Johns Road TN4 9TT (01892 617462) www.ripplesbathrooms.com

Why shutters are an investment in your home
lantation-style shutters are now considered the window covering of choice. And with good reason, according to homeowners who have made the investment. Not only do they look stylish and contemporary, shutters are built to last, easy to maintain and give you ultimate flexibility. They can be bought in standardised sizes to be fitted yourself in a ‘supply only’ model, but if your budget allows for it, made-to-measure versions are preferable because it guarantees a perfect fit. By avoiding any gaps or overhang, you gain maximum effectiveness in terms of privacy, light control, noise reduction and insulation. Bespoke, hand-crafted versions, although more expensive, are the best option for non-standard or awkward-shaped windows. Totally Shuttered, based in Chislehurst, is a small, privately-owned company offering the full end-to-end service. Its highly-trained team can help you decide on the style of shutter best suited to your home. They take care of all the necessary measurements, deliver and install the product and offer first rate aftercare. “We have hard-earned knowledge and experience of the shutters market and we project manage all of the installations ourselves rather than employing salespeople trained to sell you a product at any cost,” says Richard Evans, co-owner of Totally Shuttered. His advice for anyone considering shutters is to make sure you see a sample in the flesh, rather than committing to something you’ve seen online or in a brochure. Although there are cheaper options on the market, the reduced effectiveness of poorquality or ill-fitting shutters will cancel out any saving on cost. As good quality shutters are an investment in your home, they need to be robust to stand the test of time. Totally Shuttered work primarily with solid
80 NOVEMBER 2018
basswood, although there are also PVC and MDF options available. The plantation style shutters (with horizontal slats) are more versatile than traditional window coverings as the slats (known as louvres) can be angled via a tilt rod to control the level of privacy and light. This gives you the flexibility to make adjustments dependent on your mood or the time of day. The style of shutter (either full or half height) can also be customised to suit the purpose and ambience of any room. “The beauty of shutters is the simple, minimalistic design which gives them a timeless feel that is unlikely to date or go out of fashion. They work in either a traditional or contemporary setting. The neutral colours complement any room and can be repainted at a later date if you decide to refresh or update the décor,” says Elle Kirkwood of Guthrie & Kirkwood Interior Design. The energy efficient design saves you money as shutters help to keep the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Unlike curtains or blinds that need to be professionally cleaned, shutters are easy to clean and maintain. To get a rough idea of cost, you can enter your window measurements online. Reputable companies like Totally Shuttered will always make a site visit before giving you a full quote to ensure that the shutters are made to your exact specifications, including your choice of colour and finish. “Most of our new business comes through word of mouth recommendations which is testament to the quality of our workmanship and customer care,” says Richard of Totally Shuttered. “Without exception, customers have been delighted with their shutters and appreciate our efforts to minimise the level of disruption in their home.” Contact Totally Shuttered for a free, no obligation consultation or visit www.totallyshuttered.co.uk

WHITE CHOCOLATE, CARDAMOM AND RASPBERRY TART Give cheesecake a break in favour of this decadent tart. words: Ella
Walker, Press Association
“T
his is one of our best desserts it might even be Jemima’s favourite,” say foodie duo, Lucy Carr-Ellison and Jemima Jones of Tart London. “It is exactly what you want in a dessert, with a crunchy nutty base, luxurious creamy centre and a tart lift from the raspberry. “White chocolate and cardamom are a match made in heaven, we are always pairing them - try making white chocolate and cardamom ice cream, it’s divine.”
Ingredients: (Serves 12) • 200g pecans • 200g hazelnuts • 175g unsalted butter, melted • 2 pinches of sea salt • 250g mascarpone • 100ml double cream • 300g good-quality white chocolate • 1tsp vanilla extract • 1tsp ground cardamom • 250g raspberries
88 NOVEMBER 2018
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4. Spread both the pecans and hazelnuts out on a baking tray and roast for about 15 minutes until nicely golden. Remove and set aside to cool. 2. Place half the nuts in a food possessor and blitz to a fine powder, then put into a bowl. Blitz the rest of the nuts to a rough crumb, then mix with the powdered nuts. Add the melted butter and a pinch of sea salt and stir to combine. Tip the mixture into a 23cm loose-bottomed tart tin and press firmly up the sides and into the bottom of the tin. You want the base to be crunchy and quite thin, rather than a thick crust. Chill in the fridge while you get on with the filling. 3. Put the mascarpone, double cream, white chocolate, vanilla and cardamom into a pan and
warm over a low heat, stirring all the time to let the chocolate melt, then add a pinch of salt and remove from the heat. 4. Pour the chocolate mixture into the base. Return to the fridge and leave to set for about one hour. 5. Put the raspberries into a sieve suspended over a bowl. Use a spoon to press the raspberries through the sieve, leaving the seeds behind in the sieve. Once done, take the nearly-set tart out of the fridge and use a teaspoon to dot blobs of the raspberry puree over the tart. Turn the teaspoon over and drag the dots a little to create a pretty, swirled effect. Return to the fridge for another two hours to set completely. A Love Of Eating: Recipes From Tart London by Lucy Carr-Ellison and Jemima Jones, photography by Laura Edwards, is published by Square Peg, priced £25. Available now.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
TI-AMO, Petts Wood This month, Food editor Regan Anderton has visited Ti-Amo to give you her view on their menu. Other local restaurant reviews, recipes and dinner party game ideas can be found at www.whatiatelastnight.com
Ambiance Ti-Amo has a modern, stylish interior softened by leather chairs, and a long sweeping bar. We visited on a Tuesday evening, and there was a nice buzz of diners enjoying an after work drink and antipasti platters, as well as groups dining in the restaurant - a good sign for what’s still a relatively new addition to Petts Wood.
Service Service went way beyond just delivering the food with a smile - our waitress was highly knowledgeable about where produce was sourced from, how dishes had been prepared, and introduced every course as though describing a carefully painted masterpiece. Her passion and enthusiasm certainly added to the enjoyment of the meal.
Food Ti-Amo’s Chef and owner, Raphael was born to do this. Having learnt his skill in his parents restaurant in Naples ‘Trattoria e Pizzeria ‘O Vesuvio’ which they’ve had since 1983, he then travelled the world to hone and develop his gift. Raphael’s vision is to bring a true taste of Southern Italy to England - and how lucky we are that he chose Petts Wood to do so. Eggs are shipped over from Italy for use in his pasta and desserts, and he only uses the freshest of ingredients from fishmongers and butchers, meaning that specials are the thing to look out for when visiting…not that there isn’t also enough to tempt you from the standard menu! We were fortunate enough to have tasting plates, which flowed as follows… pan-fried scallops with raddichio. Grilled aubergine on homemade walnut bruschetta with a red pesto sauce. Salt-grilled king prawns and courgette (my new favourite way to eat prawns). Grilled squid with semolina. Gnocchi with truffle mushrooms, clams, and the most intense 96 NOVEMBER 2018
Overview “Authentic southern Italian food with high quality produce.”
tasting celery I’ve ever eaten. Pappardelle pasta with spiced pork sausage, gorgonzola, walnuts and a parmesan basket. Then, as if we weren’t full enough, a trio of rich, creamy, unctuous desserts - the absolute star of the show being ‘Crespella al mascarpone’. Everything was faultless, and not your standard ‘run of the mill’ Italian fayre.
Drink There is a fabulous wine list available, with reds from an Italian vineyard where Raphael has himself worked, however we were joining thousands of others in the UK doing ‘sober for october’, and so the barman made us his own creation of what tasted like a piña colada and strawberry daiquiri blend - so good that I didn’t even notice the omission of alcohol. 182 Petts Wood Rd, Orpington BR5 1LG. 01689 874407. www.ti-amo.co.uk
