Starring as the Wicked Queen is Jessie Wallace. Jessie has become a national treasure thanks to her performance as Kat Slater in the popular BBC soap EastEnders. No stranger to the stage, Jessie has appeared in the West End productions of Rent and Haunted as well as the 25th anniversary production of Stepping Out in the role of Sylvia. Jessie also starred as Matron Mama Morton in the UK tour of Chicago last year. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs marks Jessie’s third foray into pantomime having previously starred in Cinderella and Robin Hood, both for Qdos Entertainment. In her role as The Wicked Queen, Jessie will be joined by comedian and magician Pete Firman as Muddles and hilarious panto dame Jason Sutton as Nurse Nancy. Pete Firman is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading comedian and magicians having starred in BBC1’s prime-time Saturday night programme The Magicians and recently made special guest appearances on ITV1’s The Next Great Magician and Let’s Sing and Dance for Comic Relief. His skill for fusing magic and comedy has made him one of the most in demand magicians working on British television, writing and performing in magic shows such as Monkey Magic, Dirty Tricks, Derren Brown’s 3D Magic Spectacular and The Secret World of Magic. Jason Sutton, best-known for his award-winning alter ego Miss Jason has been entertaining audiences across the country for over 15 years. Aside from his cabaret work, Jason is a pantomime regular having starred alongside the Jason Fletcher, Larry Lamb and the late Paul Daniels. His television credits also include The Weakest Link, Come Dine with Me, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and Sky1’s Chocky-Wocky-Do-Dah. Orchard Theatre launches Cinderella this year’s Fairy Godmother of all pantomimes!
T
he stars of this year’s must-see Orchard Theatre pantomime proved it’s never too early to prepare for the Royal Ball by getting into the festive spirit by launching this year’s spell-binding show, Cinderella, which opens on Saturday 9 December 2017 starring Louie Spence and Michelle Collins. Pineapple Dance Studios’ Louie Spence (Dandini) and television star Michelle Collins (The Wicked Stepmother) were joined by Jayne Wisener (Cinderella) and Luke Kelly (Prince Charming) at nearby Acacia Hall to meet group bookers of this year’s pantomime and bring some early festive season cheer to proceedings. Television personality, presenter and choreographer Louie Spence pirouetted into the nation’s consciousness thanks to the overwhelming success of Sky One’s Pineapple Dance Studios and Louie Spence’s Showbusiness, solidifying Louie’s reputation as an expert on all things dance. In addition to his television experience Louie

has enjoyed an extensive stage career appearing in Miss Saigon and Cats and danced alongside Take That and the Spice Girls. Louie will play The Prince’s loyal manservant, Dandini. No stranger to pantomime, Cinderella marks his eighth foray into the genre, bringing with him the high kicks and high jinks he’s best known for. In addition to fronting television shows for Sky One Louie has appeared as a judge on ITV1’s Dancing On Ice and was a housemate in the 12th series of Celebrity Big Brother. Most recently Louie took part in The Jump for Channel 4 and Tour de Celeb, a gruelling cycling-based reality series which saw him tackle the toughest stage of the Tour de France on a 140km ordeal. Michelle Collins made her television debut alongside Gary Oldman in Morgan’s Boy before going on to appear in numerous primetime programmes including Real Women, Sunburn, The Sleeper, Two Thousand Acres of Skye, the Emmy and BAFTA award-winning The Illustrated Mum and Doctor Who. Michelle also appeared in the feature films Personal Services opposite Julie Walters, Empire State and Stephen Poliakoff ’s Hidden City. Having been spotted on television by BBC producers, Michelle was asked to audition for the popular soap EastEnders and won the role of Cindy Beale, originally intended to appear in just eleven episodes. Michelle’s portrayal quickly proved popular with soap executives and viewers alike and played the role of the villainous, seral-adulterer for over ten years, an integral character to numerous high-profile storylines cementing her reputation as one of the UK’s best-loved actresses. Since leaving EastEnders, Michelle swapped the Queen Vic for a different pub, to take up her role as Stella Rice, landlady of Coronation Street’s infamous Rovers Return. Michelle played the role for over two years before appearing in Casualty in a guest-starring role, Death in Paradise and Midsomer Murders. Later this year Michelle will also be seen
starring in the BAFTA award winning CBBC show The Dumping Ground. Jayne Wisener (Cinderella) made her professional screen debut as Johanna opposite Johnny Depp in the Tim Burton directed musical adaptation of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, aged just 19, which was seen by millions of cinemagoers. Following her graduation from the Scottish Royal Academy of Music and Drama Jayne went on to make her professional stage debut in the highlyacclaimed production of Parade at the Donmar Warehouse in London’s West End, starred as Lauren in Channel 4’s comedy The Inbetweeners, appeared in The Secret Garden at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and in numerous pantomimes, including the role of Cinderella in last year’s production staged by Qdos Entertainment at the Grand Opera House in Belfast. NEWS FROM BABINGTON HOUSE Celebrating Grandparents Day and Macmillan Coffee Morning A busy day celebrating and thanking our wonderful Grandparents whilst supporting Macmillan - the World’s largest coffee morning. A busy day at Babington for the Nursery and Preparatory Department celebrating and thanking our wonderful Grandparents for all the support they provide and combining these celebrations with Macmillan – the World’s largest coffee morning. Pupils from all years performed beautiful songs and rhymes for their proud Grandparents and representatives, before taking them to their Classrooms to show their work. Some pupils had drawn portraits of their Grandparents which were on display for them to see, along with their other work and books. Homemade cookies and cakes were enjoyed by all and the proceeds will be sent to Macmillian Cancer Support. Headmaster, Tim Lello said, “Grandparents Day is a real favourite in our events calendar and it is always a real pleasure to welcome so many to see our wonderful school”.

Answers to some of the more common questions our team gets asked are outlined.
Q: How can I gain access to my property for inspections/works if the tenant is refusing to allow me access? If your tenant is persistently obstructive in allowing access for non-urgent inspections, you should maintain a written record of all of your requests for access. You should also advise your tenant in writing that you will not be liable for any outstanding repairs at the property for which you have not been given access and/or any resulting injury due to damage in the property which has arisen as a result of the tenant’s failure to provide access. You may also want to consider applying to Court for an injunction order if you deem it necessary to gain access without delay e.g. where annual gas safety inspection is due, and also consider serving a section 21 notice to gain possession of your property. In the event that you have incurred any wasted costs for a scheduled appointment agreed with your tenant you should refer to your tenancy agreement as there may be a term in your tenancy agreement that entitles you to recover such costs from your tenant. Q: I have a 2 bedroom flat that I rent out and I am looking to rent out each room separately. Do I have to charge the same rent since one room has an ensuite and is a bigger bedroom? The short answer is no you don’t have

to charge them the same rent. If you are planning to offer two separate tenancy agreements it is a matter for you as the landlord and the individual tenant to agree the amount of rent applicable for each room. Based on your description of the property and the room sizes you will be justified in charging a higher rent for the bigger bedroom. Q: Can I evict a tenant without a Court Order? No you cannot evict a tenant without a Court Order. You can terminate a tenancy by mutual consent between both the landlord and tenant but if your tenant is not willing to leave you will have to apply to Court for a possession order. Q: Do I need to have a written tenancy agreement to allow somebody to stay in my house if I want to charge rent? If you are proposing to remain in your property and let out a room you do not need to have a formal tenancy agreement but we would strongly advise that you do have some form of written agreement as it is often better for both parties to have clarity as to what is expected of the arrangement and this would help in the event of a dispute. If you propose to let out multiple rooms you may also want to investigate as to whether the rules relating to Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) would apply. These will vary from one local authority area to another. Charity promotes benefits of boxing
Chislehurst resident Ian Melin works full-time for a City hedge fund, but his true passion is boxing. WORDS: Gwen Lardner
A
gainst the odds, he has transformed a derelict building on the outskirts of Petts Wood into a fully-equipped boxing club for local young people. Uppercutz is a fully accredited amateur club operating as a charity. The aim is to motivate young people to keep mentally and physically fit and to equip them with life skills such as self-discipline, commitment and respect. Without public funding, it was a long, uphill struggle for Melin to get the club up and running. The disused football clubhouse, tucked away in the midst of a housing estate on Whitebeam Avenue, had been empty for 10 years and was in need of a complete overhaul.
The aim is to motivate young people to keep mentally and physically fit and to equip them with life skills The project has been financed by Melin’s employer, TT International, and a grant from the Kent Community Foundation. Since opening last year, Uppercutz now relies on membership fees to stay afloat. It is a not-for-profit club which means that the fees will be kept as low as possible to ensure it remains accessible. Annual membership is £30 with a small subscription payable for each coaching session attended. The door is always open to new members from the age of eight. Melin describes boxing as a platform that enables young people to stay focused, keeping them off the streets and giving them the confidence and motivation to succeed elsewhere in their lives. Some parents struggle with the aggression element - particularly in relation to teenagers who are not always fully in control of their emotions. Melin argues however, that boxing doesn’t encourage aggression, merely channels it in a controlled setting. This, he says, is preferable to lashing out in an uncontrolled way, or holding on to pent up aggression. Orphaned at four, Melin was raised in children’s homes in East London. At 16 he took up boxing as a way of defending himself after being bullied. He was active on the amateur boxing circuit for years before qualifying as a coach. He is upfront about his own upbringing because it helps him identify with just about anyone who could walk through the club’s doors. “I have been through it all. There’s not much they could tell me that I can’t relate to,” he says. Funding shortages have forced many other boxing gyms to close down so Melin deserves every success for making Uppercutz a reality against the odds. The charity is primarily aimed at young people although adults are welcomed too. Weekly sessions include junior and senior boxing classes, circuit training, boot camp and personal training. A Kentish Killer A challenging sportive in the heart of the Garden of England. F
or the fourth year running, Kent law firm, Clarkson Wright & Jakes (CWJ), are sponsoring the Kentish Killer, an annual sportive for the keen cyclist. This gruelling event, organised by Orpington Cycling Club, GS Avanti, takes place on Sunday 25th February 2018. With over 900 cyclists expected to set off from Brands Hatch motor racing circuit, the clue is in the title, this is no mean feat. There are two routes to choose from which take you up and down the North Downs and the Kentish Weald, with some stunning picturesque views. Cyclists can endure either a 45 mile route or the ever popular, super tough, 70 mile test. Thankfully, many of the roads used are incredibly quiet, particularly as it is an early morning in February. GS Avanti open up event registration at 6pm on Sunday 5th November and as in previous years are expecting to sell out places on the long route within 24 hours. Many local South London clubs see this as their winter challenge and lots of individuals return year on year because once you have done the ‘Killer’ once, you get the bug, as has Alex Wormald, one of CWJ’s personal injury and medical negligence lawyers. Alex will be embarking on his fourth experience of the Kentish Killer and knows only too well what’s in store, “For me I enjoy cycling and I do a lot of triathlon, however, it is a really tough ride, with extremely challenging hill climbs. As for training, I cycle to and from work every day and after the Christmas break I start putting in 1-2 hours training at the weekend.

Two new virtual reality experiences have made their debut at The View from the Shard - on their open-air Skydeck on the 72nd floor of the tallest building in Western Europe! Visitors can test their nerves up to 800ft above the city on ‘The Slide’ an adrenaline-fuelled 360-degree virtual reality experience. Guests ‘slide’ around its peak on a simulated helter skelter at speeds of 100mph along imaginary open-air tubes that corkscrew around the skyscraper – all via a curved platform which moves around beneath them during the two-minute ride. The second ‘Vertigo’ allows visitors to really face their fear of heights! This virtual adventure sees the building fall away, leaving you suspended in the air, walking across The Shard’s early infrastructure and balancing on scaffolding of the stripped back construction of Western Europe’s tallest building. Romeo the fox - The View from The Shard’s mascot that represents the intrepid real fox who was discovered on level 72 during construction of the building - also makes an appearance as guests take instructions from the construction sites foreman. Both exhilarating experiences heighten the sensation by blowing fresh air at the guest during their session. LONDON’S TOP FIVE MUSEUMS

ong gone are the days when we were reluctantly dragged to museums by our parents or teachers. Now, many of us eagerly await new exhibitions, and the result of this year’s TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards (released today) show just how popular these institutions have become. Chosen by members of the public, five spots in London have made it into the top 25 list of best-rated museums in Europe - more than any other European city - and most of them are free to enter. If you’ve not been to them before, now might be the time to find out what you’re missing. Victoria & Albert Museum (Nearest tube: South Kensington) Coming first in the UK is no small achievement: the V&A has overtaken last year’s UK winner, the British Museum, and has pushed the likes of Paris’ Musee du Louvre and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum aside. The V&A’s free to view collection is devoted to art and design, with objects ranging from Art Deco furniture to paintings by John Constable and JMW Turner. It’s the museum’s temporary exhibitions (which do require an entry ticket) that you really need to keep an eye on. In recent years shows dedicated to the likes of fashion designer Alexander McQueen and music icon David Bowie have been hugely successful. National Gallery (Nearest tube: Charing Cross) Walking through the National Gallery is a veritable who’s who of art history, with everyone from Botticelli to Titian, Van Gogh and Monet making an appearance. Ever heard of a little painting called Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh? It’s just one of the many masterpieces on display as part of the permanent exhibition - open free to the public. Once you’ve done admiring the artwork, pop into the elegant National Dining Rooms for a bite to eat. It was designed by world famous architect David Collins, who also designed the celeb-magnet bar at Mayfair hotel Claridge’s, and has window views

spilling onto Trafalgar Square. British Museum (Nearest tube: Holborn) Speaking of impressive buildings, the British Museum can definitely be counted among some of the most incredible structures in London. The previous two museums on the list are largely dedicated to art, but in the British Museum it’s all about history. Don’t be fooled by the name, because there are artefacts from all over the world. Set aside several hours to learn about the ancient Egyptians or the Bronze Age in Europe. Remarkably, the museum is free - although tickets are required for temporary exhibitions. Natural History Museum (Nearest tube: South Kensington) If you haven’t visited the Natural History Museum since you were a child, now is the perfect time to go. Dippy - the giant dinosaur who filled up the main room of the building - has now been replaced by Hope, the 25.2-metre-long blue whale skeleton who hangs from the ceiling. It’s free to view the mind boggling collection of animals, fossils and skeletons so expect long entry queues at weekends. The annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is also held here, although ticket prices apply. It’s worth combining with a trip to the neighbouring V&A both are on Exhibition Road in South Kensington. Churchill War Rooms (Nearest tube: Westminster) Located in a secret underground bunker from World War Two, the Churchill War Rooms are the best place to learn about the former British Prime Minister’s life. It was in this confined space beneath Westminster that Churchill and his senior ministers mapped out the Allied victory. Many items of memorabilia have been placed just as they would have been all those years ago. This is the only museum in the top five which doesn’t have free admission. Expect to pay £19 for adults and £9.50 for children.

reg Rusedski, Mark Philippoussis and Mansour Bahrami are confirmed to compete at this year’s Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall. They join two-time US Open winner Pat Rafter, British fan favourite Tim Henman, French Open winner Juan Carlos Ferrero, former World No. 1 Marat Safin and Roland- Garros doubles champion Henri Leconte, with further players to be announced in due course. Former World No. 4 and former British No.1 Greg Rusedski retired from the sport in 2007. A career highlight came in 1997 when Rusedski reached the US Open final, leading him to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and ITV Sports Champion of the Year Awards. In addition to these achievements, Rusedski is possibly best known for holding the record for the fastest serve ever recorded, at 149mph. Former World No. 8 Mark Philippoussis turned professional when he was 18 years old and went on to win 11 singles titles between 1996 and 2006. During his 21 years as a professional player, Australian Philippoussis reached the final of the US Open in 1998, losing to fellow countryman Pat Rafter and the Wimbledon final in 2003, where he was defeated by Roger Federer. He also contributed to Australia winning the Davis Cup in both 1999 and 2003. One of the sport’s greatest entertainers, Mansour Bahrami has played every Champions Tennis since its inception in 1997. A true jester of the courts, his
showmanship has made him a longstanding crowd favourite. During his professional career, Bahrami reached the 1989 French Open men’s doubles final and has competed in numerous tournaments around the world. THE HISTORY OF Following the recent announcement that Michael Kors has bought the luxury accessories brand for £896m - we take a look back at the history of Jimmy Choo, rising from humble origins in a cobbler workshop to becoming one of Britain’s best-known fashion brands.

ou can trace its roots back to a bespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed 48 NOVEMBER 2017
immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of ready-to-wear footwear -

In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories. But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, crystal-embellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-toearth leather goods and ready-to-wear. DOMINIC WALMSLEY Local Jeweller Expands Within Sevenoaks Established in London in 1991, local jeweller Dominic Walmsley is delighted to announce the expansion of his Sevenoaks shop to now include his workshop. Why did you decide to open a bespoke jewellers in Sevenoaks? I set up my business in a studio workshop in London in 1991 after completing a traditional apprenticeship. After moving to Sevenoaks with my family I thought it would be the perfect location to open another shop closer to home whilst maintaining my London studio. Now, having been established in Sevenoaks for 16 years and having built up a reputation for fine jewellery, the majority of our work is now commissioned from here. The lease recently expired in our London studio and the entire building is currently being redeveloped. I felt that it was the perfect time and opportunity to bring both the workshop and shop together under one roof in Sevenoaks. Our staff have all made the move with us and we now design and make all of our jewellery here. Your shop doesn’t resemble a typical High Street jewellers, what makes you different? We don’t buy in jewellery from larger, mass produced manufacturers, this gives our shop a unique and more individual appeal. Instead we design and make our jewellery all under one roof, allowing us complete freedom with our designs and enabling us to offer a traditional service.
Tell us more about your bespoke work Although we have our own ranges of readyto-wear jewellery, we specialise in our bespoke jewellery service. With the increase of internet shopping there are no longer many individual jewellers where you can have a piece of jewellery handcrafted to your exact specifications. When a client commissions a piece from us we offer a fitting service, as you would with a bespoke piece of clothing. This enables us to make any alterations necessary, tweak the design and reassure our client

Where do you see your designs heading in the future? Our clients are showing a much greater appreciation in individually designed pieces of jewellery inspired by works of art such as our Merry Berry and Camelia pendants, painstakingly created using a variety of stones. that the end result will surpass their expectations. What changes have you seen recently? Undoubtedly the re-working of previously unworn but cherished pieces of jewellery. I think that more and more people are realising that it is far better to remodel a piece of inherited jewellery, using the same materials, creating a new breath-taking piece whilst retaining the sentimental value, rather than leaving them locked away. Have you had any particularly unusual commissions? All of our commissions seem to have a story behind them but we will never forget the gift that a wife made to her husband of making a surprise pair of cufflinks from his extracted wisdom teeth. As a designer what styles are currently popular? We have noticed that our clients are moving away from the traditional stones such as rubies, emeralds

and sapphires and discovering new stones- spinels, tourmalines and, most noticeably, peach sapphires. There are so many beautiful stones to choose from and we are always happy to show our clients a selection for them to choose. Alternatively, we will source a stone to a client’s specifications.

Go and get yourself a minimum of 100ml water and get it into you. To progress that practice, add lemon, to make the body alkaline. Lemon water is amazing, it also adds a bit of flavour.”

And don’t pick! Picking at your skin will result in scarring and create more spotty outbreaks. Wear SPF every day to slow ageing and protect from the harmful effects of UV rays. Learn to meditate Life-coach and mindfulness practitioner Dr Caroline Hough (aspiring2wellness.com) says we can train our minds to reduce stress, making us more likely to achieve our goals: “It involves sitting and meditating for 20 minutes. Bring yourself into the moment and be aware. That’s an awareness of your external environment, so just looking at the flowers and the trees and the sunshine and appreciating it instead of rushing through life. Be aware of your internal environment, by noticing if you’re very stressed, for example if you’re clenching your muscles. We tend to live our lives at a level of stress which is unhealthy.”
Start self-watching Professor Jim McKenna, head of the Active Lifestyles Research Centre at Leeds Beckett University, advises we record our successes to motivate ourselves: “Whatever you want to do, whenever you achieve, write it down. From taking photos of our days out, receiving all our emails at work to being told were to go on our SatNav app. One very popular use is listening to music but because the speakers on our devices are so small, one thing the phone can’t do is provide a quality listening experience for a group of people. So, what is best to pair them with, Bluetooth speakers or WiFi Speakers. Bluetooth speakers are a great way to take your music with you on the move. They can play far louder and clearer than your phone and batteries can last up to 24 hours. The down side of Bluetooth speakers is that they have very little intelligence so, they rely on your phone or tablet to work.
WiFi speakers on the other hand can transmit further distances, can link to each other (some systems up to 32 rooms) and because they are designed more as a permeant installed solution, the speakers can be larger, more powerful and of a higher quality. Just to note, some speakers can have both Bluetooth and WiFi connections, you can then choose yourself how to use them.

Seamlessly connect music throughout your home What’s more interesting today though, is just how many different ways there are for you to get music for your Blutooth or WiFi speaker. Using the many internet services available I think you can now instantly listen to just about any song ever written. These services include Tune-in Radio (100,000+ radio stations worldwide so you won’t get bored), Spotify, Deezer, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Tidal, Google Play (to mention a few) all of which provide bags of music choice. Most offer free trials and if you use these wisely you can actually get quite a lot of free music before you have to start paying. Considering each CD I used to buy cost around £12, I think £9.99 a month to listen to anything is quite good value for money. Of course, all these services require a paid for internet connection at home or 3/4G on your phone while on the move.
I often get asked what’s the difference between CD quality and streaming quality. Standard streaming quality is not quite as good as CD’s however, many suppliers are now launching HD streaming. This reports to match CD quality. Note HD streaming subscriptions costs slightly more and require more data which can cost more on your mobile but with good quality speakers the difference is worth it. Lastly what are Airplay and Google Cast. You can think of these as languages. If you speak French and the product you talk to speaks French, all’s good. Many apps and products are now starting to speak these languages such that, a phone made by say Sony can send music to a TV or Speaker made by Bang & Olufsen because they speak the same language. In summary. If you are on the move you need a Bluetooth speaker but for a home installation, you should to go for WiFi. Bluetooth is an easy way to connect devices but its range is limited and sound quality restricted. WiFi has far more power, range and intelligence but requires a working network router to link all products together.

Our suppliers for Granite, Quartz and Corian are all local and that means we can work closely with them to ensure the best end result.
What about appliances? We rate German engineering so Neff, Bosch, Siemens, Gaggenau and Miele are a good starting point. We then cherry pick from various other 74 NOVEMBER 2017
manufacturers around the world such as Fisher & Paykel, Quooker, ISE and others for specific solutions to suit each customers requirements.
Anything else? To complete a project we can supply and install decorative glass splashbacks, under floor heating systems, floor coverings (porcelain, stone, wood or Amtico), LED lighting, radiators, sound systems and generally anything else the client wishes to add. The list goes on.
What’s the single most important part of the project? That’s an easy one to answer. The single most important part to ensure customer satisfaction being the fitters. They are key to the whole project. Our experienced fitting teams realise that happy customers mean recommendations, so they give a lot of time and effort to ensure customer satisfaction. athroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.
A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness.
AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower
as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household.
LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll holder and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A wellchosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Make it mellow and moody “If you’re looking to give a bit of a kick to this laid-back hue, pair with a flash of hot pink or a rich, deep navy,” says Nadia McCowan Hill, resident style advisor, Wayfair. “This will take the colour from grown-up to glamorous, especially if you add accents and accessories in on-trend gold or copper, and use tactile fabrics like velvet and linen for a luxurious touch. In Olia Hercules’ new cookbook It’s time you got your tastebuds around some Georgian and Azerbaijani flavours, Olia Hercules tells Ella Walker.
B
ritain is late to unearthing the joys of Georgian food, says writer and food stylist Olia Hercules. “Everybody was so busy with the Middle East, and loving that, that we haven’t ripened to the Georgian thing,” she states. “I’m quite surprised it took so long.” Our lack of Georgian love is set to change though, with the release of her second cookbook, Kaukasis. A follow up to 2015’s Mamushka, which explored Olia’s Ukrainian heritage, this new collection of recipes focuses on Caucasus - the hub of countries packed together like pickles in a jar at the border of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. For the book, Olia, 34, returned to the countries that she, her parents and elder brother meandered

through on a road trip to visit family in Baku in Azerbaijan, when she was a toddler. “We drove from the south of Ukraine, through Crimea, took a ferry to Russia and Sochi, and drove through Georgia and into Baku without even warning them. We were just like, ‘Oh, shall we go to Baku?’ my parents are crazy wanderlusts - so we drove and we got there and it was amazing.” Returning as an adult, Olia retraced as much of that family trip as possible, gathering recipes and ideas along the way. She toured Georgia - travelling in “half-broken marshrutka cars; little vans that you can go to another side of Georgia in for a fiver!” - and Azerbaijan, going as far as Lankharan on the border, which is heavily influenced, both in food and culture, by its

neighbour, Iran. “We didn’t go into Armenia, but I really wanted to go to Nagorno-Karabakh [a region being contested by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Karabakh leaders], where my auntie’s old house is, but it’s probably destroyed now by war,” says Olia sadly. “It’s too dangerous, they’ve started shooting there again. I just thought, ‘I’m not going to risk it’.” Today, Olia, who trained at the famous Leiths cookery school and was a chef-de-parti at Ottolenghi, is bustling around the kitchen of her East-London flat, pickling huge, shiny unripe
“Georgian and Azerbaijani cooking were woven into Olia’s childhood, and growing up in the ex-Soviet Union, where ingredients could be really quite scarce at times” tomatoes, but, she says, no tomatoes can compare to the ones you get at markets in the Ukraine and Georgia. “The best tomatoes I’ve ever tried for sure, they’re massive - the size of your head - but flavoursome, juicy, everything you need from a tomato is there.” Georgian and Azerbaijani cooking were woven into Olia’s childhood, and growing up in the ex-Soviet Union, where ingredients could be really quite scarce at times. She remembers that, if you were eating out, Georgian restaurants “might be OK for food, otherwise it’d be horrible - otherwise you’d really have to go into people’s homes to eat well”. 90 NOVEMBER 2017

Meeting home cooks is still something that fascinates Olia, who includes recipes from the people she met on her travels in Kaukasis. “Especially in rural areas, if you go to visit someone, they will have a massive barrel of cheese that they make every morning and then they salt it, or they make buffalo butter, which is the most delicious thing I’ve ever tried - I could have eaten it with a spoon,” she remembers. The markets, particularly in Georgia, are as astounding as the tomatoes, too. “Your mind is blown,” says Olia with a grin. “Especially those who love unusual ingredients. You can have little barberries from Tusheti, there’s crazy wild plants and mushrooms I’ve never heard of before, and alycha plums [similar to greengages]. People use them when they’re firm and green and quite sour to make this plum sauce, tkemali; a hot and sour plum ketchup.” And, if you’re looking for herbs (huge fresh bundles of purple basil, tarragon and dill are used in almost everything, even refreshing fizzy drinks), the trick is to “look for an Azerbaijani lady - apparently Azerbaijanis grow the best herbs”. For Olia, a season of pop-ups and cookery sessions now awaits as the rest of us slowly come to realise just what we’ve been missing when it comes to Georgian and Azerbaijani food, and then, who knows? “I can be very organised in the kitchen as a chef, but in life, I tend to...” she says, drifting off, before adding with a smile: “It’s all very spontaneous.”
real taste of india in Bromley “Visited Masala dabbas on Orpington High street for first time a few nights ago. as a frequent visitor to india, the highlight of the restaurant has to be the food. Often it’s difficult to find authentic indian dishes - however Masala dabbas has hit the right note in serving true indian cuisine outside the usual baltis/kormas. We started with the nimmakaya chicken - 3 healthy sized chops cooked to juicy tenderness was a great way to begin. portion sizes continued to please throughout - happily the prawn main we had didn’t skimp on the prawns and managed to retain a seafood flavour - not an easy thing to get right with the bold flavours of indian cuisine. We also shared a tasty lamb biryani. The naans too were warm and fresh having come straight out of an indian tandoor. Overall the food was excellent, and though pricier than most local curry houses, the tastes served up were a cut above the usual, and comparable (if not a shade better) to food i’ve eaten at more celebrated restaurants such as dishoom. ambiance-wise the restaurant has a clean and pleasing decor, with a semi-open kitchen to give you a glimpse at the culinary work. Did you know about the underground food scene that’s taking place right on your doorstep?!

here’s a new food scene taking SE London and Kent by storm, and it’s the brain child of our very own Food Editor, Regan Anderton. Shortly after giving birth to her son, and then winning BBC1’s Yes Chef! in 2016, she decided it was time to put down the mouse in her career in digital advertising, and pick up a wooden spoon instead - to open a cookery school that’s located in “a shed” (that’s what she calls it…it’s really a beautifully kitted out wooden lodge|), at the end of her garden. At The Cooking Shed, Regan teaches adults and children a range of different skills from pasta and bread making, to Thai and curry masterclasses. Customers kept telling Regan that she should open a restaurant, but not wanting to commit to long hours and huge overheads, she decided instead, to take over local food venues and run private supper nights, incorporating cooking demonstrations. Starting with her first Italian supper night at a cafe in West Wickham, tickets sold out within three days of going on sale and the feedback from guests was amazing. She quickly progressed to taking over full venues and sold out on two consecutive nights within twenty-four hours when her Greek supper night in a secret location in the woods took place - guests were welcomed with an acoustic guitarist and welcome cocktail, then led to their table under twinkling fairy lights in the trees to enjoy a three course meal cooked under the

stars, and finished with everyone gathering around a campfire toasting marshmallows and drinking Metaxa brandy hot chocolates. Since starting The Cooking Shed, Regan has been fortunate enough to work with Michelin Star Chef Theo Randall, and at her recent collaboration with The Chancery in Beckenham where she took over their kitchens for two nights to run a special Thai supper, and had Jane Beedle (finalist from The Great British Bake Off 2016) come along to provide a cooking demonstration and make dessert. The pair will be teaming up once again on the 2nd December to deliver ‘Regan & Jane’s Christmas ball-ball’ - a three course meal, and three amazing drag artists (one of whom you may recognise from X-Factor), to entertain and delight a crowd of 70. On the horizon for 2018 is trip to Whitstable, where The Cooking Shed will be taking over the East Quay venue to deliver a shellfish masterclass and supper night with hotel stay in conjunction with Whitstable Rocks but first it’s a fish supper night at Branching Out in Eden Park on the 24th November that Regan will be hosting. Ambiance The Queen’s Head has recently been refurbished - now a cosy, welcoming pub with dining area, and a crowd pleasing menu. We visited on a Wednesday evening when the popular pub quiz was taking place.
Service When we arrived we ordered drinks from a very welcoming and friendly member of the bar staff, and were then shown to our table by the manager. Table service was available for food and drinks, and we made choices from the menu based upon the managers recommendations.
Food Standard British pub favourites were available, such as pie, fish and chips, and burgers, as well as some slightly more unexpected dishes like wild boar and chorizo burger, and battered halloumi and chips. To start, we chose the crispy calamari a generous portion of crispy squid served with a sweet chilli and pineapple dip. For main, the slow cooked pork belly and chorizo was melt in the

mouth delicious, served on a bed of mash with seasonal vegetables. Unfortunately we didn’t get to try the desserts, however if we had, then we’d have gone for the lemon meringue cheesecake - one to try on our next visit!
