10 Things You Didn’t Know About David Walliams! D
avid Walliams has been entertaining us for the past 2 decades. He’s made us laugh in Little Britain, outrageously taunts Simon Cowell on Britain’s Got Talent and is acknowledged as the natural heir to Roald Dahl when it comes to writing for children. As the stage version of his best-selling book Awful Auntie heads to the Churchill Theatre, we reveal ten things about David you do not know.
He likes writing about the bad guys. “Villains are always so much more fun than heroes. I wanted Aunt Alberta to be funny as much as scary.”
He won’t be appearing on Strictly Come Dancing. “I can’t dance at all, as you might have seen in the TV adaptation of Gangsta Granny when I tried to dance with Miranda Hart. So I would say my chances are less than zero.”
He has good tips about how to play Tiddlywinks which features in Awful Auntie. “The great thing about Tiddlywinks is the name. It’s the best named game out there. I haven’t played it for years but I think speed is the key. Or feel free to cheat.”
Often compared to Roald Dahl, his favourite Dahl book is The Twits. “It’s utterly hilarious and I love that it is a children’s book with no child characters.”
He understands his audience. “Children love to be scared but it can’t be too horrifying. Children love to laugh but it can’t be too rude. You always have to be the right side of the line.”
He has a recipe for his children’s books. “I think a good children’s book should be funny and exciting, and a message that makes you think about it long after you have finished reading it.” He loves seeing his books’ characters on stage. “You feel like a magician when as an author you see your book come to life. It’s a real thrill to hear audiences laughing, one that never leaves you even though I have been making comedy shows of my own for many years.” His book Awful Auntie was inspired by a classic Stanley Kubrick film. “I am obsessed with the film The Shining. I wanted to create a horror story where a child was trapped in a house with a dangerous relative, cut off from the outside world.” He collects autographs from the famous people he meets. “I’m not shy about his. with Ray Quinn How does it feel to step into Cliff Richard’s shoes in the role? I’m very excited but also a bit nervous at the same time. It was my Nan’s favourite movie and she adored Sir cliff Richard! So big boots to fill and I’m up for the challenge. You’ve starred in so many great musicals, have you done anything different to prepare for this role? I have to have a bit of a 60’s posh London accent .. so that’s totally new to me ! I’m enjoying every minute in rehearsals .. plus plenty of stretching as there is a lot of dancing ! What are some of your favourite songs and moments in the show? TITANIC THE MUSICAL Q&A with Maury Yeston (Music and Lyrics) When the show was first conceived, what was it about the Titanic story you felt would lend itself well to a musical? It was in the late summer/early fall of 1985 when the news hit that Robert Ballard had discovered the actual physical wreck of the Titanic on the ocean floor. That was an extraordinary moment and I began to think that, just 15 years away from the new millennium, the story of the Titanic encapsulated all the major themes of the 20th century. The ship sank in 1912, which was really culturally the beginning of the 20th century – with the likes of Debussy and Picasso and the beginning of 20th century arts. Here we were coming to the end of it and I thought it would make for an interesting theatre piece, although I didn’t yet have a notion of how I would do it. I thought it was an interesting story that would capture people’s imaginations. Soon afterwards, in January 1986, the US space shuttle blew up and I realised ‘Good God, we haven’t learned anything, have we?’ With the Titanic someone forgot to put binoculars in the crow’s nest and here we are in January 1986 and something called an O-ring, which is basically the seal in the rockets, lead to the deaths of seven people. It felt like we still hadn’t learned not to put our unparalleled, unqualified faith in the perfection and infallibility of technology. 106 years after the ship sank, why do you think this story continues to enthral people? It’s a grand story about people’s bravery, cowardice 2 8 M AY 2 0 1 8
and a coming together of humanity. It’s also a story about how we deal with an emergency, how we deal with potential tragedy and how in the final analysis the human spirit is indomitable under the worst circumstances. In terms of the show itself, I feel as a dramatist that if you want to make an historic story into a piece of musical theatre or a play you have to a beginning, middle and end – which of course the story of the Titanic has. One of my favourite things in the theatre is when the audience knows a secret that the people on stage don’t know themselves. What I found when I started developing the show with Peter Stone [who wrote the book] was that until the ship hit the iceberg the passengers were having the time of their lives. The audience comes into the theatre already knowing the ending but when you have a character kissing his girlfriend goodbye and saying ‘I’ll be back in a fortnight’ the audience goes ‘Oh my God, I know what’s going to happen but he doesn’t’. What do you hope audiences will take away from seeing the UK touring production? I hope they will be moved, I hope they will be entertained and most importantly I hope they will be filled with the emotion of having seen the worst but also the best of what human beings can accomplish. I hope they will come away uplifted by witnessing and participating in the experience of what the human spirit can do to survive and to collaborate in helping each other. For fans of contemporary art, there is also a show-stopping, permanent installation by Turner Prize-winning artist Richard Wright: an intricate gold leaf fresco on the ceiling of the Great Hall. No visit to the Queen’s House would be complete without viewing the iconic Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I – recently back on display after undergoing major conservation. Like her father King Henry VIII, Elizabeth was born in Greenwich, and the area is still rich with royal history and influence. It’s even said that the deer in Greenwich Park are descended from Henry’s hunting stock. TIMES IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU SHOULD MAKE A WILL Often people think that Wills are just for older people, but regardless of age, they are vital in giving clear, legal protection on what happens to your assets if you die. Below are five times in your life when you should make a Will:
1. Buying a House This will probably be one of the biggest purchases you make in life, and having a Will ensures that after you die, it will go to the people you intended it to. Without one, your assets including your house will be subject to the rules of intestacy. Would this leave your loved ones adequately housed?

1. First, could you briefly talk me through your career progression up until establishing Harper Stein? Well, my background is primarily within psychological support and then headhunting. I have always been a natural networker but the creation of Harper Stein happened purely by chance. When I first started my career, matchmaking was not in my plan, although it comes so very naturally to me and gives me such pleasure so I have most certainly found my calling in life. 2. Why did you establish Harper Stein? I should start by saying that there was never an infamous lightbulb moment. You see, Harper Stein was not established with intent. Many years ago when I was working as a headhunter, I met a wellknow chap at an event. After a few too many glasses of champagne and a real heart-to-heart about his failing love life, with dead-end date after dead-end date, I volunteered to help him find true love… and I did! He thanked me with a six-figure cheque, passed my details on and the rest is history.
3. What does Harper Stein offer that other dating sites/apps/services don’t? Harper Stein private membership is entirely unique, there is no comparison. Unfortunately the dating industry is an unscrupulous one which creates unease in may of the ladies we meet and also in some of the gentlemen whom have tried general matchmaking services. I could write a book full of the stories I hear. This in itself creates a big challenge as there are new barriers in the way of their personal happiness. 10. So, how can we get an invite? You would need to be referred by a member or by an ambassador. he fifth edition of Mayfair Art Weekend will take place this summer coinciding with the landmark 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts. Following the unveiling of the RA’s major redevelopment of Burlington Gardens and the transformation of the Cork Street gallery district, Mayfair Art Weekend presents an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Mayfair and St James’s as one of the world’s most historic and thriving art quarters. Mayfair Art Weekend will be joined by the Royal Academy of Arts, over 40 galleries, auction houses, and a host of artists and the wider creative community to showcase the unparalleled artistic expertise, quality and diversity on offer in Mayfair and St James’s. The weekend will commence with Gallery HOP!, a Friday evening event which allows art enthusiasts to explore some of the capital’s world-class galleries and luxury retailers for private views, evening receptions, and in-store exclusives on a walk-in basis. Saturday and Sunday will continue with a series of enriching and lively events programmed by each participating gallery. Curated events will range from talks, tours and workshops to performances and will take place throughout the weekend. Again, it will be down to the residents to decide. LM: You mentioned that you have Retirement Apartments and Service Plus Suites; what’s the difference between these? PH: Both are properties which are purchased on a 125-year lease. The Retirement Apartments are generous sized properties which include master bedroom with en-suite shower room, fully fitted kitchen including granite worktop, and a spacious lounge. For those who feel they need a bit more help, Emerson Park offers five one-bedroom Service Plus Suites. These come with practical, discreet support services including a delicious threecourse lunch, an hour a week of housekeeping and a laundry service. LM: Paul, tell us more about this new retirement community for Kent. PH: This is unlike any other retirement and care development in the area. The easiest way to describe it is as a retirement village, but even these vary in what they provide. Emerson Park, which is due to open this summer, will include 42 luxury one- and two-bedroom Retirement Apartments, 5 Service Plus Suites providing assisted living and a care home providing nursing, residential and dementia care. oise induced hearing loss is caused by the prolonged exposure to excessive levels of noise, for example - noisy workplaces, loud machinery, or just listening to loud music. It can also be caused by loud bursts of sound such as explosions, gunshots etc. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that noise exposure is the biggest cause of permanent hearing damage around the world, more importantly it is avoidable! It is one of the commonest health problems and can be difficult to detect as the effects build up gradually over time and may take a number of years to manifest itself. WHO says more than 1 billion teenagers and young adults risk losing their hearing by listening to loud music. The U.N. agency urged young people to turn down the volume to prevent irreversible damage to their hearing. When this exposure is particularly loud, prolonged or habitual, the sensory cells within inner the ear are damaged permanently leading to irreversible hearing loss. The volume or intensity of sound is measured using the decibel (dB) scale, where 0dB represents the quietest sound that a healthy human ear can

hear. This is a logarithmic scale so every increase of 3dB means that the sound intensity is doubled. So, a sound of 83dB is twice as intense as a sound of 80dB, although it won’t sound twice as loud. Sound levels under 85dB are generally safe to listen to, but if you work in a noisy environment where the sound levels exceed 80dB, an employer should assess the risk to your hearing and give appropriate advice / action. Long exposure to sounds over 85dB can cause permanent hearing loss, tinnitus or both, so appropriate action/ protection should be taken. Your risk of hearing damage from loud noise is dependent upon two things – how loud the sound is and how long you are exposed to it for. The safe exposure time for sound levels at 85dB is eight hours. As the sound intensity doubles with every increase of 3dB, the safe exposure time halves. So, for example, the safe exposure time for 88dB is four hours, 91dB is 2 hours and for 100dB it is only 15 minutes (see table below). Studies in middle-and high-income countries show nearly 50 percent of teenagers and young adults aged 12 to 35 years are exposed to unsafe levels of sound from personal audio devices, and around 40 percent are exposed to potentially damaging levels of sound at concerts, nightclubs etc. Young people who wear earplugs during concerts can feel as much of a rush from the music at 90 decibels as they can at 110 decibels. The fact that earplugs may look uncool may be true today, but if there is a change in behavior that may not necessarily be true in the future and wearing earplugs may actually be cool rather than not. The World Health Organization advises young people to keep the volume down on personal audio devices and limiting use to less than one hour a day. The important message is to look after your ears before it becomes too late, prevention is better than the cure!

From bland bedroom to beautiful boudoir WORDS: Gwen Lardner
O
ur bedroom should be a tranquil, comforting space where we can feel completely at ease, yet in design terms, it is the room that is most often overlooked, according to Elle Kirkwood of Guthrie & Kirkwood Interior Design. Homeowners tend to invest far more in downstairs living spaces because they are where we most often entertain. Bedrooms are often an afterthought with furniture accumulated over the years that is more functional than fashionable. “It is only natural that we concentrate on the rooms that other people see, but having a bedroom that you love spending time in is such a joy – even if few others get to appreciate it!” says Elle. We spend half our lives in bed so the surroundings are definitely worthy of investment, she believes. Elle recently worked with new client Amie who, together with her husband, has purchased a stunning period property in Chislehurst. The couple sought expert help from Guthrie & Kirkwood when it came to redecorating the master bedroom as it was important to them to create a luxurious space where they could relax and enjoy spending time. “Our room was bland and impersonal so we wanted something far more inviting; a sanctuary into which we can escape from the hectic lives we lead, juggling demanding jobs and a busy family life,” Amie says. As the room is North facing, it does not get much natural light, making it more difficult to create a bright and airy feel. Elle’s advice was not to try and fight nature, but to embrace the cooler light by painting the walls a darker colour. She suggested a deep blue which makes a dramatic impact and gives the room a more cosy, indulgent look. “This particular room felt cold and uninviting and I knew that a deeper colour would make it feel more restful and intimate,” Elle explains. The fitted wardrobes, skirting and door/window frames were painted in the same colour as the walls in order to create a more contemporary, clean look. This makes the bedroom appear bigger as there is no white or other contrasting colour to draw the eye. The single pendant light could not be adjusted according to mood or time of day and the output was too harsh for a bedroom. To create a more

relaxing ambiance, Elle devised a layered lighting scheme to include ceiling downlights, wall lights and drop pendants on either side of the bed. The combination of light sources gives more flexibility and helps compensate for the lack of natural light. Instead of standardised light switches and sockets, Elle suggested edgier, contemporary hardware in solid metal with diamond cut detailing. These finishing touches are crucial, she believes, as they become a feature and elevate the whole design scheme. Furniture and accessories were carefully selected to introduce more interesting tones and textures into what was previously a very neutral colour palette. Amie’s new dressing table and bedside tables are in soft grey wood with brass coloured legs and a parquet pattern on the surface. These have been paired with a made-to-measure storage stool in a brightly coloured, palm print fabric. Bold patterns in complementary colours add interest to a room and offset solid colours. As Amie has an interest in Japan, Elle found a company that makes bespoke bolster cushions from vintage wedding kimonos. The imagery and colours in the silk brocade are exquisite and the bed cushion is a complete one-off, not something you can find in your average department store. Everything in the room has a stylish, highend feel to it and Amie is delighted with the transformation, likening it to staying in a luxury hotel. Even the bedding, with its subtle navy trim, is understated but effective. “We absolutely love everything about the room. It is such a beautifully designed space, filled with rich colours, sparkly lights and luxurious textiles and textures. Without Elle’s help, we would never have been able to pull it all together or find such amazing pieces,” Amie says. She looks forward to having Elle’s input in other rooms in the house, but for now is happy to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of her new bedroom. rom 13 – 17 June, the capital’s ultimate culinary celebration, Taste of London, will bring a delectably fresh line-up of the world’s best chefs, the latest greatest and most exciting restaurants, unique culinary experiences and the best gourmet producers to Regent’s Park. Combining the innovation, creativity and exceptional talent evident in London’s thriving restaurant scene, this year’s festival is set to be the best yet. Food lovers will be spoilt for choice with 40 of London’s latest, greatest and most exciting restaurants popping up in Regent’s Park over the five-day festival. Restaurants making their Taste of London debut include the Portuguese sensation Bar Douro, Mexican taqueria El Pastor, West African Ikoyi, vegan Mexican restaurant Club Mexicana and Amalfi-inspired Italian Sorella. The Taste Residence brings some of the best talent in the world to London for a once in a lifetime fine dining experience. JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE FUDGE 28-year-old Michelin star chef Tommy banks likes to experiment with sweet and savoury.
I
t’s not uncommon for vegetables to be found in desserts these days, but what about artichoke? This recipe from Tommy Banks’ cookbook Roots uses it in fudge. “Root vegetables have a high sugar content, jerusalem artichokes are nearly 10% sugar,” he says. The fudge was actually his dad’s idea: “We were researching South American vegetables, because there’s a lot of interesting tubers they grow there, and reading about different syrups the Aztecs used to make out of them. “I went around to his house he had this disgusting, black-greygreen water, that he had boiling away in a pan that had all really badly oxidized. It was sweet by the time he’s reduced it but had this really savoury flavour as well - so we made it into a fudge.”
Ingredients: Makes 20 pieces • 4kg Jerusalem artichokes, peeled, to make 400g artichoke syrup • 500g glucose • 410ml whipping cream • 225g butter • 16g fine sea salt • 20ml cider vinegar • 200g milk chocolate, broken into pieces

1. To make the syrup, roughly chop the artichokes and feed them through a juicer. Allow the juice to stand still for an hour, and skim off any foam that settles on top. 2. Pass the juice through a double layer of damp muslin, and bring to the boil in a large stockpot. 3. Over a medium heat, allow the juice to reduce at a steady simmer, continuously skimming off any scum that rises to the surface, until you are left with a syrup roughly the colour of Marmite and a consistency similar to treacle when cooled. 4. Combine the artichoke syrup, glucose and whipping cream in a small stock pot and bring slowly to the boil, stirring to combine. When the mixture boils, reduce to a medium simmer and cook until it reads 100°C on a sugar thermometer. 5. Then turn the heat down as low as it will go, and cook until the mixture reaches 112°C, stirring gently but frequently. At this point, remove the pan from the heat and immediately beat in the butter while the mixture is still hot, followed by the salt and vinegar. 6. Scrape the warm mixture into a deep roasting
tin lined with baking parchment. Once the fudge is cool to the touch, transfer the tin to the freezer to set hard. 7. Remove from the freezer and use the baking parchment to lift the fudge out onto a chopping board. After 10 minutes or so at room temperature, use a large knife heated in hot water to cut the fudge first into 2cm wide strips, and then into squares. 8. Line up the fudge pieces on fresh parchment and return to the freezer for an hour. Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a small pan of barely simmering water. 9. Using a fork, plunge the fudge squares one at a time into the chocolate to cover them completely, then knock off the excess chocolate by tapping the fork against the edge of the bowl. Carefully replace the fudge in rows on the baking parchment and return to the freezer to set the chocolate. 10. To serve, remove the fudge from the freezer, trim any splattered chocolate edges with a paring knife, and allow to thaw in the fridge for 30 minutes.
